Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: The new Minister of Transport has his head screwed on
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I like to take the time to applaud the outbreak
- 0:02Speaker 1: of common sense exhibited by Chris Bishop, the new Minister
- 0:05Speaker 1: of Transport. He has decided to revisit some of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: blanket speed limits imposed by his government in the wake
- 0:09Speaker 1: of concerns by locals. Can I just say it's his
- 0:12Speaker 1: government that does the blanket speed limits. They are the
- 0:14Speaker 1: ones who said fifty one hundred or one ten over
- 0:17Speaker 1: all roads, no matter the condition of the roads or
- 0:19Speaker 1: their usage, and they use the blanket speed limit phrase
- 0:22Speaker 1: as a vote catcher at the election. But the old
- 0:25Speaker 1: government actually left most speed limits in the hands of
- 0:27Speaker 1: local authorities, their roads, their rules. The Labor government issued
- 0:31Speaker 1: a schedule of over three hundred sections of road on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the state highway network, which are the only roads they control.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So yeah, there were those, but that central was put
- 0:39Speaker 1: in place over dangerous roads, mainly around rural schools who
- 0:43Speaker 1: are concerned at motors screaming past at pickup time at
- 0:45Speaker 1: one hundred k Now, Chris Bishop has come out and
- 0:48Speaker 1: indicated he's going to listen to local concerns, which is
- 0:52Speaker 1: a good thing because until you use a road, you
- 0:55Speaker 1: don't know what an appropriate limit is. There's no way
- 0:59Speaker 1: a central government bureaucrat locked up and Wellington has any
- 1:02Speaker 1: idea of the local reality. Ask the people about how
- 1:05Speaker 1: they feel about the roads. And that's what Chris is doing,
- 1:08Speaker 1: which is smart and that's a good thing. Congratulations Chris.
