- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26Well, this morning Scripture comes from the book of Romans
- 0:30chapter 6 verses one through 14. What shall we say then?
- 0:38Shall we go on sinning that grace may increase?
- 0:41By no means we are, we are those who have died to sin.
- 0:45How can we live in it any longer?
- 0:48Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ
- 0:51Jesus were baptized into his death?
- 0:55We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death,
- 0:59in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the
- 1:02glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
- 1:07For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we will
- 1:12certainly also be united with Him in a resurrection like His.
- 1:16For we know that our old self was crucified with Him, so that
- 1:21the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should
- 1:25no longer be slaves to sin, because anyone who has died has
- 1:30been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we
- 1:35believe that we will also live with him.
- 1:38For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he
- 1:41cannot die again. Death no longer has mastery over
- 1:45him. The death he died, he died to
- 1:49sin once for all. But the life he lives, he lives
- 1:53to God. In the same way, count
- 1:55yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
- 2:00Therefore, don't let sin reign in your mortal body so that you
- 2:04may obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of
- 2:08yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer
- 2:13yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to
- 2:17life, and offer every part of yourself to Him as an instrument
- 2:22of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your
- 2:25master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
- 2:32This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:35Thanks be to God, Amen. I wonder this morning, this
- 2:44Easter morning, how many of you have had the thought at some
- 2:50point, maybe even in the past week?
- 2:53You've thought it, but I wonder how many of you have thought
- 2:58there has to be more to life than this, more than what I'm
- 3:04experiencing. You may feel stuck in a current
- 3:08job. The things you used to do might
- 3:11not bring you the same enjoyment they once did.
- 3:15You've realized that having a good marriage is hard work.
- 3:19Your friendships and relationships feel more distant
- 3:23than they used to. You feel isolated.
- 3:25Maybe you feel like you're just going through the motions.
- 3:29And add to that, your pastor for the last six weeks has been
- 3:33telling you that you need to deny yourself.
- 3:36Pick up your cross and follow Jesus.
- 3:43Maybe you've internalized that message as I've got to say no to
- 3:48anything that feels good, or I've got to stop being me and be
- 3:55more like Jesus. And in some churches that that
- 3:59is in fact the message that's been taught, right, that the
- 4:03Christian life is learning to control yourself.
- 4:06You have to deny your desires, you have to ignore your
- 4:11emotions, you have to reject your needs.
- 4:15That, we've been told, is what the faithful Christian life
- 4:21looks like. And like all good lies, there's
- 4:26a measure of truth in those ideas.
- 4:30But that is not what the Gospel says.
- 4:33Friends, I want to tell you this morning that the good news of
- 4:37Jesus is life to the full. Right when those women who the
- 4:44ones who stayed at the foot of the cross until Jesus died, when
- 4:48they went to the Garden Tomb on that first Easter morning, they
- 4:53went to the tomb where Jesus had been laid following his
- 4:56crucifixion. As we read at the start of the
- 5:00service, they went in sorrow. They went to anoint the body
- 5:07that had been hastily taken down from the cross and and wrapped
- 5:11in linen and placed in the tomb because the Sabbath was about to
- 5:16begin and they hadn't had time to do all of the proper burial
- 5:21preparations. They went to care for the body
- 5:25of the one whom they had come to put their hope in, and they went
- 5:32to say goodbye. So you can imagine, maybe begin
- 5:37to imagine the surprise and confusion that surely
- 5:42overwhelmed them when they reached the tomb and and they
- 5:46found not only the big heavy stone rolled away from the
- 5:50opening, but they found the tomb empty.
- 5:53The body of their beloved Jesus was gone, and as they were
- 6:01standing there wondering at this, suddenly 2 shining men
- 6:07dressed in dazzling white clothes disappeared out of
- 6:11nowhere. And their message was that Jesus
- 6:16wasn't dead. He had risen just as he said he
- 6:21would. Why do you look for the living
- 6:24among the dead? They asked.
- 6:28It was then, only then that the women began to remember what
- 6:34Jesus had said. Friends, this is the good news
- 6:41of Jesus. The call is to self denial and
- 6:48cross and death. That's part of it.
- 6:51We can't ignore that part of the story.
- 6:54Following Jesus doesn't magically mean health and wealth
- 6:58and an easy life. But the cross was not the end of
- 7:02Jesus story and neither was the empty tomb.
- 7:06Nor is it the end of the story that we are called into.
- 7:11Jesus offer is life and it's not just a life full of of misery
- 7:18and denial where we suffer through until we die and then we
- 7:24get our reward in heaven. No, it's because Jesus died and
- 7:30was raised to life again. His invitation to us is abundant
- 7:36life. I think Paul was having this
- 7:41same discussion in his mind as he wrote that letter to the
- 7:45church in Rome and where he said in Romans 64 from the passage
- 7:50that will just read for us, Romans 64 says we were therefore
- 7:54buried with him, with Christ through baptism into death, in
- 8:00order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the
- 8:04glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
- 8:13You see, when we die with Christ, we're also raised with
- 8:18Christ to new life, so we no longer have to live as slaves to
- 8:25sin and death. The new life is an offer of
- 8:30freedom. It's freedom from the power of
- 8:33sin, but it's also freedom to live the way God intended,
- 8:38freedom for righteousness. Now, it's not often what we
- 8:45think of as freedom as modern modern Americans, where we think
- 8:51that that freedom means we belong only to ourselves, and
- 8:56therefore only we can define meaning and value and right and
- 9:00wrong for ourselves. No, this is a freedom that comes
- 9:05from knowing we belong not to ourselves, but to Christ our
- 9:10Creator, our Redeemer, our Sustainer.
- 9:14It's freedom to live as citizens of the Kingdom of heaven even
- 9:19now as part of the new creation humanity that God is building.
- 9:28If you're someone who has heard the good news of Jesus as merely
- 9:33a call to suffering and self negation and restriction or or
- 9:39maybe arbitrary rules, I want to tell you this Easter morning
- 9:45that is not what Jesus died and rose again to secure for us.
- 9:51That may be a gospel, but it is not the gospel.
- 9:56The women who went to the tomb that Sunday morning 2000 years
- 10:00ago, they, they took the news of what they had experienced, what
- 10:04they had seen and what they had heard and they ran.
- 10:08They ran to share the news with Jesus disciples.
- 10:14And the disciples, when they heard it, like typical men, they
- 10:17didn't believe the women what they were telling him, right?
- 10:22So Peter himself, he gets up and runs all the way to the tomb.
- 10:26He looks in and he sees the empty linen lying there and he
- 10:32wonders what it is that has actually happened.
- 10:38Remember, he's already been told what's happened.
- 10:41But he wonders. But eventually, after Jesus
- 10:46himself appears to those disciples, after he spent most
- 10:50of that Easter day walking Incognito between Jerusalem and
- 10:55a little village called Emmaus, as he spoke with a pair of
- 10:58disillusioned disciples about all that Scripture had said
- 11:03about him before he revealed himself to them in the breaking
- 11:07of bread. And he disappeared from their
- 11:08sight. Then those two disciples, they
- 11:12too ran all the way back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples
- 11:17what they had experienced, how their hearts had burned within
- 11:22them as they walked and talked with the risen Jesus.
- 11:29Eventually the disciples began to believe the good news, the
- 11:37good news that Jesus wasn't dead.
- 11:39He was really, actually alive. And it changed everything.
- 11:46It changed everything not just for those original disciples who
- 11:51had walked with Jesus and seen him arrested and tortured and
- 11:55crucified. It changed the entire course of
- 12:00history, These ordinary men, fishermen, tax collectors, a few
- 12:08political activists thrown in there, and some some others.
- 12:12They became people with such a burning desire to share this
- 12:17good news that they let nothing stop them until they themselves
- 12:24were put to death. If you notice, throughout all
- 12:29the resurrection stories, everyone's response is to go and
- 12:35tell someone 120 people who saw the risen Jesus waited in
- 12:44Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit to come, and those 120
- 12:49people became 2.6 billion people today who are gathering in
- 12:53worship just like we are to worship the resurrected Jesus.
- 13:01Because experiencing the risen Jesus changes everything.
- 13:08He brings freedom to our lives. He invites us to live in a new
- 13:13reality and actually empowers us to live there by his Spirit.
- 13:19And so the natural response is, is to want to share that good
- 13:24news. And so I wonder this morning,
- 13:32we've all come to church, we've come to worship.
- 13:37But I wonder, have you encountered Jesus, The Jesus who
- 13:45is still just as risen and alive today as he was that first
- 13:51Easter Sunday? I'm not talking about knowing
- 13:55him or knowing about him in your head.
- 13:59I'm not talking about learning the Sunday School stories.
- 14:03I'm talking about experiencing the presence of Jesus.
- 14:07The one who sets hearts on fire. The one who transforms people
- 14:13like you and me and changes everything.
- 14:18The one who sets people like you and me free from the things that
- 14:25used to hold us captive and enslave us and, and he gives us,
- 14:30he gives people like us new life full of meaning and purpose and
- 14:35mission. It's amazing.
- 14:41Let me be realistic though, right?
- 14:43I don't want to mislead anyone. There will still be times we're
- 14:47called to self denial. There will be times even as we
- 14:52follow Jesus that we will suffer.
- 14:56Suffering might even come to us because we follow Jesus.
- 15:03But he's promised, He's promised and scriptures the, the story
- 15:10that tells about the promises of God and how he's been faithful
- 15:14all the way through to keep his promises.
- 15:17And he's promised to be with us in the midst of it all, the
- 15:22good, the bad, the ugly, and the spirit within us that he gave
- 15:26us. He, he brings life to us and
- 15:29love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and
- 15:32goodness and faithfulness and self-control and gentleness.
- 15:36He, he, the spirit, he forms holiness, right?
- 15:40The very character of Jesus in US, people like you and me.
- 15:49And he empowers us with gifts to serve the church and the world.
- 15:57So friends, no matter what you've been told by churches in
- 16:01the past, or maybe by your families or by the world, this
- 16:09is the gospel, the good news. Because Jesus suffered, died,
- 16:15and rose again, we too can die to that old self.
- 16:21And in doing so, we can be raised to new life in Christ
- 16:26Jesus's life, living in US, giving life to our bodies.
- 16:34And if you've not experienced Jesus like that, you can today.
- 16:40You can confess that to him in prayer.
- 16:43You can admit that you've been trying to do life on your own
- 16:46and it just isn't working anymore.
- 16:50You can admit that you've been enslaved to things that you just
- 16:53can't be. You can deny yourself.
- 16:58You can turn to follow Jesus, believing that God did in fact
- 17:03raise him from the dead. That Jesus is still active and
- 17:06living and you can ask him to set you free, fill you with his
- 17:11life and friends. He will.
- 17:18He will. If you're one of those people
- 17:21here today who has had that experience of the risen Jesus,
- 17:29my question for you is, who are you going to tell about it?
- 17:35Who are you going to tell today, this week?
- 17:38Because the good news is worth sharing.
- 17:42Because the good news is not just for you and me and the
- 17:46people who come to church on Sunday mornings.
- 17:48It's good news is for the world. He wants everyone to know.
- 17:57He wants everyone to experience the grace and forgiveness, the
- 18:00freedom and life that He offers, the life he died to give away to
- 18:12you and me. Would you pray with me this
- 18:15morning? Jesus?
- 18:21We are so grateful that you would give yourself for us, that
- 18:28even while we were still far away from you, while we were
- 18:33still trying to live life on our own terms, Jesus, you came for
- 18:38us to set us free from the sin and death that enslaved us and
- 18:46kept us from being all that you imagined us to be when you
- 18:50created us. Jesus here and now, this morning
- 18:56we give you ourselves. Jesus, would you come and
- 19:03encounter us this morning because you're always the first
- 19:09one to make the move? Would you move toward us this
- 19:14morning? Would you give us the grace and
- 19:16the faith and the courage to respond and move towards you?
- 19:26We pray this Jesus in your name.
