- 0:00DANI: Guys, I got a dog in our spring break.
- 0:00KARA: Yeah, huge
- 0:03news.
- 0:03DANI: So, and she is in the room with us right
- 0:05now and you are going to be hearing some sounds.
- 0:07Once she is fine being left alone, you'll hear
- 0:10less of her.
- 0:10KARA: Yeah. She's outside the door hitting
- 0:13the mic a little bit right now.
- 0:13DANI: Yeah, just a little.
- 0:15KARA: But the best thing is she's the cutest thing
- 0:19I've ever seen.
- 0:19DANI: She's up there with Piper.
- 0:19KARA: Two
- 0:21cute gals.
- 0:21DANI: Two evil twins. How are you good?
- 0:21KARA: Good.
- 0:27DANI: How was your spring break?
- 0:27KARA: I went to Portland.
- 0:29That was really fun. I went with Sarit. Hi, Sarit.
- 0:32DANI: Hey, Sarit.
- 0:32KARA: Stayed there with her family for
- 0:35Passover, and I had a great time. Did a lot of thrifting.
- 0:38Yeah, Portland was delightful. We went to a Deaf
- 0:41event there. That was really fun.
- 0:41DANI: Oh, my God.
- 0:43Tell them about the, were they Mormons?
- 0:43KARA: Oh, my
- 0:46God, yeah. There were two Mormons there and one
- 0:50Jehovah's Witness attempting to convert the poor
- 0:53Deaf people. Yeah, attempting to convert the
- 0:56poor Deaf people of Portland, Oregon. The Mormons,
- 0:59I think, stayed to themselves, but the Jehovah's
- 1:02Witness approached Sarit and I and A and a couple
- 1:05of others. We were sitting at a table. And she
- 1:08was like, you should come to this event, some
- 1:10church event. And it was like in two days. And
- 1:13I signed, sorry, I'm not going to be here. And
- 1:16then she was basically like, but you have to.
- 1:19Like Jesus died for your sins. You need to come
- 1:21to this Easter thing.
- 1:21DANI: Girl, my sins? I don't
- 1:24know about my sins.
- 1:24KARA: We're here for Passover,
- 1:26guys. And then we got into — not with this woman.
- 1:29She ended up leaving. Her name was like Miss
- 1:31Honey or something, but not like Matilda. It
- 1:34was like — she had this crazy name. It was like—
- 1:37DANI: I had such a crush on Miss Honey. Have we talked
- 1:39about this on the podcast? I think we have.
- 1:39KARA: We
- 1:42have, but she's the opposite of Miss Honey.
- 1:42DANI: Ugh,
- 1:44Miss Honey's Wario.
- 1:44KARA: She introduced herself
- 1:47like that, and we were like, okay. But then—
- 1:49DANI: She introduced herself as the opposite of Miss
- 1:51Honey?
- 1:51KARA: Basically. But—
- 1:51DANI: She said, I'm ugly and
- 1:54I'm not going to take in any orphans.
- 1:54KARA: Apparently,
- 1:57a lot of religious people learned sign to try
- 2:00to take in Deaf people into their church.
- 2:00DANI: Yes,
- 2:03I get that content on Instagram reels.
- 2:03KARA: Yes. I
- 2:05found recently this white woman, whose entire
- 2:08Instagram page was like, I love Deaf culture.
- 2:12I love Deaf people. I can sign. And basically
- 2:16it's trying to convert Deaf people. And she's
- 2:19hearing. It's crazy.
- 2:19DANI: I wonder if the Mormons
- 2:22were, like true Mormons are like a special interest
- 2:24of mine.
- 2:24KARA: Yeah.
- 2:24DANI: I'm obsessed with the culture.
- 2:27And also I grew up a little bit adjacent to
- 2:29it, because sometimes there'd be a homeschool
- 2:31family that's just, like, a little bit weird,
- 2:33and you wouldn't know why.
- 2:33KARA: There's a lot more
- 2:35out west, too.
- 2:35DANI: Yeah, there were a lot of
- 2:37homeschool families where, like, there would
- 2:39be seven siblings, and they'd all be, like, gorgeous
- 2:41blonde girls who do, like, 17 different sports
- 2:44and are, like, very talented, smart—driven women.
- 2:47And then, like, four years later on Instagram,
- 2:50they'd be, like, getting married, and were
- 2:52both, like, 17.
- 2:52KARA: Okay.
- 2:52DANI: And I was like, oh, okay,
- 2:55I understand what's happening.
- 2:55KARA: They want to have
- 2:56sex so bad. That's why.
- 2:56DANI: Do you think that the
- 2:58Mormons at the Deaf event in Portland were Mormons
- 3:02serving on their mission? The specific niche
- 3:06interest that I have is in the spring when they
- 3:09announce where they're sending the Mormons on
- 3:11their missions. Because sometimes I used to think,
- 3:14probably partially from Book of Mormon, but then
- 3:16also just from what I was seeing on the internet,
- 3:19that they were always sending them far, far
- 3:22away.
- 3:22KARA: But sometimes it's, like, Portland, Oregon.
- 3:24DANI: No, exactly. That's what I'm saying is, like,
- 3:26I just watched this girl read her, like, full
- 3:29letter in front of her parents. It was, like,
- 3:30an eight—minute Instagram reel, you guys. I
- 3:33got, like, sucked the fuck in. And it's her being,
- 3:36like, reading the full thing. And then at the
- 3:38end, it says, you have been called to serve in
- 3:41Austin, Texas, in the language of Spanish. So
- 3:45she needs to learn Spanish, so then it's like
- 3:47for the next six months you will learn Spanish
- 3:49and then you will go to Austin, Texas and I'm
- 3:51like, okay. Do you think that it was like, you will
- 3:54learn sign language and you will go to—
- 3:54KARA: Portland?
- 3:57DANI: Court the Deaf community in Portland, Oregon? I
- 4:00don't know.
- 4:00KARA: I wouldn't say Portland, Oregon has
- 4:03the largest Deaf community, though. If I would
- 4:05really want to convert some Deaf people, I'd do
- 4:07LA or New York.
- 4:07DANI: I don't know. I don't know that
- 4:10there's a lot of logic there anyway
- 4:10KARA: Yeah. But
- 4:13they were, like, in full garb with the tag.
- 4:13DANI: So
- 4:15then they were definitely serving their mission.
- 4:18KARA: Wow.
- 4:18DANI: Like, maybe they know sign language for
- 4:20non—nefarious reasons.
- 4:20KARA: They barely signed.
- 4:20DANI: Okay.
- 4:23KARA: This Jehovah's Witness, that was, she was our
- 4:25main problem. Because she was kind of really
- 4:28pushing it on us. Very paternalistic, too.
- 4:28DANI: What
- 4:30was she saying?
- 4:30KARA: She was just kind of like, I'm
- 4:33here to help you poor Deaf people, and you should
- 4:36come to this event. And we're like, You're imposing
- 4:39on our Deaf space. For context, we were at a
- 4:42Deaf cafe. It's a Deaf—owned and Deaf—run cafe
- 4:46in Portland, Oregon. It's called Woodstock Cafe,
- 4:49if you're interested. Very cool place. But she,
- 4:51a hearing person, infiltrated the space and was
- 4:55like, I am here to convert you and take over
- 4:58the space and also interrupt our conversation.
- 5:01DANI: Right.
- 5:01KARA: It also just makes me feel so icky because
- 5:03I think a lot of Deaf people experience language
- 5:06deprivation, they have a lot of language barriers
- 5:08already. A lot of them struggle academically
- 5:11or education—wise.
- 5:11DANI: Yeah.
- 5:11KARA: Or underemployed, which
- 5:16we'll talk about in the podcast later. And I
- 5:18think they really leech onto that and take advantage
- 5:21of it. So, yeah, it just makes me feel very icky.
- 5:24DANI: Yeah. It's gross.
- 5:24KARA: You want to talk about Disney
- 5:26animation?
- 5:26DANI: Yes. Oh, my God.
- 5:26KARA: For context, so, Disney
- 5:31just released sign language videos of three
- 5:35music videos? We Don't Talk About Bruno.
- 5:35DANI: Yeah,
- 5:38and then—
- 5:38KARA: Frozen 2 and Moana 2. Or Moana.
- 5:38DANI: I
- 5:42think it's Moana, but then it was Frozen 2. Because
- 5:45I remember seeing the clip and being like, that's
- 5:48the song they chose? No offense to Frozen 2.
- 5:51KARA: I never saw Frozen 2.
- 5:51DANI: Obviously Frozen. Actually,
- 5:54Frozen 2 has a beautiful plot line of, like,
- 5:57land back. Like it's Elsa and Anna, guys, spoilers
- 6:00for Frozen 2, but it's Elsa and Anna finding
- 6:03out that their ancestors were like actually shitty
- 6:05people who like colonized and oppressed a bunch
- 6:08of people. And the land was like magic before
- 6:11they came in and like leached it all out. And
- 6:13it's them being like, we need to give control
- 6:15back to these people.
- 6:15KARA: Interesting.
- 6:15DANI: Yeah. It's just that the
- 6:18songs, most of them flopped.
- 6:18KARA: Okay.
- 6:18DANI: In my opinion!
- 6:21I think Frozen 1 is just like banger after banger.
- 6:25KARA: I love Frozen.
- 6:25DANI: Yeah.
- 6:25KARA: So good. Anyway, Disney
- 6:29released animations of the characters in these
- 6:33Disney clips. And the characters are signing.
- 6:36So like Elsa is signing. Moana is signing.
- 6:36DANI: And
- 6:40they were truly animated.
- 6:40KARA: It's a traditional
- 6:43animation style.
- 6:43DANI: Yeah, which meant they were
- 6:45drawing.
- 6:45KARA: Like frame by frame.
- 6:45DANI: Yeah, frame by
- 6:48frame drawing.
- 6:48KARA: Which is cool.
- 6:48DANI: Super cool.
- 6:48KARA: But
- 6:51then.
- 6:51DANI: Love the concept.
- 6:51KARA: The concept is great.
- 6:54It's groundbreaking, very cool to see. But, you
- 6:58cannot understand anything they're saying. And
- 7:00also the way it's quote unquote filmed, it'll
- 7:04have like, it'll sweep back and then you can't
- 7:07see their hands or you'll sweep behind them.
- 7:09And again, you can't see their hands.
- 7:09DANI: I think
- 7:11what the animators chose to do was keep the, like
- 7:15way that it was originally filmed. Quote, filmed,
- 7:20I don't really know, captured, whatever, as close
- 7:22to the original as possible. But unfortunately,
- 7:26that's not the way that you would capture ASL.
- 7:29KARA: No. And a lot of Deaf creators were like, what
- 7:32you did is great. And it seems like they had
- 7:35a lot of consultants who were Deaf, which is
- 7:37wonderful, and consultants that matched the ethnicity
- 7:40and race of the people they were supposed to
- 7:42capture.
- 7:42DANI: Yes.
- 7:42KARA: But, someone did recommend like,
- 7:46you know, it's really hard because you're doing
- 7:48animation, traditional animation style frame
- 7:50by frame, which is not how ASL really should
- 7:53be captured. It should be motion capture.
- 7:53DANI: Yeah.
- 7:56KARA: Because it's so fluid. And also ASL is so 3D.
- 8:00DANI: Yes.
- 8:00KARA: And when you're watching it on TV, it's
- 8:02just not going to be the same.
- 8:02DANI: And some of the
- 8:06facial expressions weren't necessarily matching
- 8:09as well, again, because they're trying to keep
- 8:11it true to the original.
- 8:11KARA: And also the animators
- 8:14were all hearing.
- 8:14DANI: Right.
- 8:14KARA: Which is another thing.
- 8:17There could have been Deaf creators doing this,
- 8:20but there weren't. There were Deaf consultants
- 8:22specifically for the signing itself and not for
- 8:25the animation part.
- 8:25DANI: Yeah, I think probably what
- 8:28happened was Disney was like, in the spirit of
- 8:31inclusion, let's bring Deaf people into the space
- 8:35to create when probably what should have happened
- 8:38is they should have funded a project, you know?
- 8:42KARA: I think it's a great first step.
- 8:42DANI: It was great.
- 8:44KARA: But what they should be doing next is funding.
- 8:46Gallaudet has an animation lab.
- 8:46DANI: Oh my God. The
- 8:49Walt Disney—Gallaudet Animation Lab?
- 8:49KARA: Literally.
- 8:52DANI: Can you imagine?
- 8:52KARA: But Gallaudet has a very cool
- 8:54animation lab, but they use motion capture. But
- 8:57that's also easier to capture signing.
- 8:57DANI: Yeah.
- 8:59And I would imagine cheaper.
- 8:59KARA: And cheaper. Easier.
- 9:04DANI: Listen, the animation is beautiful and I'm
- 9:07a really big proponent of Disney's original animation
- 9:10styles. That being said, motion capture would
- 9:12have been faster and cheaper and more accurate.
- 9:15KARA: Yeah. I know Bluey had some signing, and that
- 9:19was pretty good.
- 9:19DANI: That's really nice.
- 9:19KARA: Yeah. Because
- 9:22Bluey, the characters, their hands are quite
- 9:24big.
- 9:24DANI: Yeah, their hands are quite big.
- 9:24KARA: Which really
- 9:27helps. And with the Disney ones, if you go see
- 9:29it online, their hands are — no, like Elsa and
- 9:33Anna, they have big heads and tiny hands. So
- 9:35it's really hard to see what they're signing.
- 9:38DANI: Yeah.
- 9:38KARA: So should we get to the show? [UPBEAT JAZZY MUSIC].
- 9:38DANI: Oh, my God.
- 9:55KARA: So much happened.
- 9:55DANI: I was so excited to be back.
- 9:59KARA: This was a great episode to start off this season.
- 10:01DANI: Fantastic episode. Lenny has tucked herself so
- 10:04intensely into between me and the microphone.
- 10:07So, that's okay. I am annoyed that they like timeline
- 10:13checked me so hard.
- 10:13KARA: It's with Emmett's art?
- 10:16DANI: I'm not even saying that. I'm saying to turn
- 10:18on the TV and have it be like, it's the end of
- 10:20summer, guys. We've just jumped, what, two and
- 10:23a half months?
- 10:23KARA: Season one, episode 23. This is
- 10:27the Color of My Dreams, which aired September
- 10:303rd, 2012.
- 10:30DANI: I didn't look it up.
- 10:30KARA: It's a Joan Miro
- 10:34painting. Let me spell it out for you. So picture
- 10:36a white canvas. The top left is in beautiful
- 10:40calligraphy and it says photo. And then the bottom
- 10:43right is a blue blob. And then below it, in French,
- 10:48it says, this is the color of my dreams.
- 10:48DANI: Do you
- 10:51like it?
- 10:51KARA: It's fine.
- 10:51DANI: Okay.
- 10:51KARA: I think it's called
- 10:53that because Regina has a dream.
- 10:53DANI: Oh, my God.
- 10:57This opening, to reference Twilight right away,
- 11:00this is shot for shot.
- 11:00KARA: Oh, yeah.
- 11:00DANI: Breaking Dawn,
- 11:03the movie.
- 11:03KARA: Elaborate.
- 11:03DANI: Bella has a dream where
- 11:06she's walking down the aisle in an all white
- 11:09dress that is so not her and like everything's
- 11:12just a little bit too bright, a little bit off.
- 11:14And then she gets up to the front and she looks
- 11:16at the officiant and it's Aro the evil vampire,
- 11:19like an enemy that she's afraid of. And then she
- 11:22turns around and everyone she loves is dead. So
- 11:24it was kind of giving that.
- 11:24KARA: Yeah, Regina's walking
- 11:26down the aisle. Bay and Daphne are bridesmaids.
- 11:30Everyone's looking.
- 11:30DANI: And they look so happy, like
- 11:32too happy.
- 11:32KARA: Yes, everyone looks thrilled. Angelo
- 11:35is the groom. She walks up to Angelo and then
- 11:38who's the priest but Patrick.
- 11:38DANI: Patrick, who's
- 11:41still fucking there.
- 11:41KARA: Who's still there. Not for
- 11:44long.
- 11:44DANI: I thought we'd be done with him already,
- 11:46guys.
- 11:46KARA: Yeah. Then she wakes up. It was all a dream.
- 11:49DANI: Yeah. And Patrick's like, what are you doing?
- 11:51KARA: Yeah. He's like, what do you think you're doing?
- 11:53She wakes up.
- 11:53DANI: She wakes up and she's wearing,
- 11:55I know this is just for TV, but it still pisses
- 11:58me off.
- 11:58KARA: Is it an underwire bra?
- 11:58DANI: Yeah. She's wearing
- 12:01a full coverage nightie. That's very cute. Like
- 12:04a sexy little. But whatever. But like her boobs
- 12:07fully covered and then a hot pink underwire bra
- 12:10underneath.
- 12:10KARA: To sleep in?
- 12:10DANI: To sleep in.
- 12:10KARA: It's so
- 12:14uncomfortable. A was watching with me last night
- 12:16and A was like, why is she wearing a bra?
- 12:16DANI: I think
- 12:19I'm just used to watching like HBO shows where
- 12:23you can see some nip and it's fine.
- 12:23KARA: Right.
- 12:23DANI: But
- 12:27I guess I do remember watching like Hannah Montana
- 12:30growing up. Specifically Hannah Montana, they
- 12:32did this. They would have Miley Cyrus be like
- 12:35in PJ bottoms, two layered tank tops and fully
- 12:39in like, a padded underwire push—up bra underneath
- 12:42the two tank tops. And the implication was like
- 12:45that she just woke up. And my nine—year—old
- 12:47brain was like, am I supposed to be wearing bras
- 12:50like to bed?
- 12:50KARA: That's true. I used to go to sleepovers
- 12:53with friends who would wear underwire bras to
- 12:56bed. I think maybe they watched Hannah Montana and
- 12:58they said perhaps.
- 12:58DANI: Like all Disney shows. Probably
- 13:01because it was like, yeah, we don't want to see
- 13:03any nip.
- 13:03KARA: It doesn't have to be like this.
- 13:03DANI: It
- 13:05doesn't have to be like this, guys. Free the
- 13:07nipple. Regina, free the nipple.
- 13:07KARA: Do you know
- 13:10what else she's wearing?
- 13:10DANI: What?
- 13:10KARA: A carpal tunnel
- 13:13wrist brace.
- 13:13DANI: Oh, my God. Yeah.
- 13:13KARA: Which we'll get
- 13:17to.
- 13:17DANI: We'll get to it.
- 13:17KARA: Now, people are finally
- 13:20swimming in the pool.
- 13:20DANI: Finally.
- 13:20KARA: Finally.
- 13:20DANI: They
- 13:22finally built the set.
- 13:22KARA: Daphne and Toby are having
- 13:25a little swimming race. Toby beats her. He is
- 13:27signing up a storm now.
- 13:27DANI: He's signing. They clearly,
- 13:30the implication is they've had a summer of bonding.
- 13:33KARA: Yes. It's really sweet.
- 13:33DANI: And then Bay shows up.
- 13:37KARA: She's back.
- 13:37DANI: She's back. And oh, the implication
- 13:39is that Bay's been away.
- 13:39KARA: She's been away.
- 13:39DANI: Regina
- 13:42tells Patrick, I gotta go. Bay is coming back.
- 13:45And it's like, where's she coming back from?
- 13:46She's back and she's wearing tights under jean
- 13:49shorts, which is so me freshman year of high
- 13:52school.
- 13:52KARA: I know. And a feather in her hair. She
- 13:55went to the Galapagos, guys.
- 13:55DANI: I can't speak on
- 13:58the feather.
- 13:58KARA: I used to have a feather in my hair.
- 14:00DANI: Oh my God. What color?
- 14:00KARA: I think green.
- 14:00DANI: Was it
- 14:03like in the era of people doing that?
- 14:03KARA: Yes.
- 14:03DANI: I
- 14:06never fell for that propaganda.
- 14:06KARA: Okay.
- 14:06DANI: I want
- 14:09to tell everyone. I want to spread the word.
- 14:11KARA: Okay.
- 14:11DANI: That I didn't.
- 14:11KARA: Good for you. Mine
- 14:12was really tiny. It was just like a few tiny
- 14:16strands. It wasn't as big as Bay's was.
- 14:16DANI: Yeah,
- 14:18Bay's is huge.
- 14:18KARA: It's hot pink. Huge.
- 14:18DANI: Yeah. It's
- 14:23a very visual way to show that she has undergone
- 14:27some change.
- 14:27KARA: She went to a tropical place.
- 14:27DANI: Yeah.
- 14:30KARA: And her signing is kind of rusty.
- 14:30DANI: Yeah.
- 14:30KARA: She's
- 14:33trying to sign with Daphne after being away for,
- 14:35what, four or five weeks?
- 14:35DANI: Yeah. But she mostly
- 14:39wasn't signing with Daphne. She was mostly signing
- 14:41with Emmett. And now she's not signing at all.
- 14:44And she brought a boy home.
- 14:44KARA: Yeah, cut to the
- 14:48kitchen where we meet this guy. He says he and
- 14:51Bay bonded over their mutual hatred of sun, ocean,
- 14:55and sand. Why would you go to the Galapagos?
- 14:58DANI: Bay was just looking to go anywhere, I think.
- 15:00KARA: Guys, it's beautiful there. But you should not
- 15:03go if you don't like the sun, ocean, or sand.
- 15:05DANI: I kind of want to go to the Galapagos.
- 15:05KARA: I would
- 15:07love to go. ALEX: We should go.
- 15:07KARA: This boy's name is
- 15:09Alex.
- 15:09DANI: Yeah. He's cute.
- 15:09KARA: He's cute.
- 15:09DANI: I don't really—
- 15:13KARA: He's just some guy.
- 15:13DANI: He's also, he read as very—
- 15:17I was like, that's a gay man.
- 15:17KARA: He was in Spring
- 15:20Awakening on Broadway.
- 15:20DANI: Gay?
- 15:20KARA: No.
- 15:20DANI: Well, the actor.
- 15:24KARA: That I don't know. His Wikipedia wasn't expansive
- 15:26enough.
- 15:26DANI: Okay.
- 15:26KARA: Alex is meeting everyone, but he
- 15:30does not know about the switch.
- 15:30DANI: No.
- 15:30KARA: So he sees
- 15:32Regina and goes, are you her aunt? Awkward.
- 15:32DANI: But
- 15:36you know what? I get it. Bay's allowed to go
- 15:38have— first of all, she's trying to bring this
- 15:41boy back and make him work as a regular boyfriend.
- 15:43He's clearly a vacation boyfriend. Bay just doesn't
- 15:46understand that yet. But she's allowed to just
- 15:48keep that all separate if she wants.
- 15:48KARA: Yeah, it's
- 15:51her story too. She doesn't have to share it all.
- 15:54John is like, honey, enough. Enough. No more
- 15:58boys.
- 15:58DANI: John has a real attitude this episode.
- 16:01KARA: It's very annoying.
- 16:01DANI: What is going on with his
- 16:03voice this episode? He was clearly sick.
- 16:03KARA: Oh really?
- 16:06DANI: He, there's like some weird dubbing happening
- 16:09in the beginning scene with him and Kathryn.
- 16:12KARA: thank you, hearing.
- 16:12DANI: And then at the end when they're
- 16:14fighting at the end of this episode, he's like
- 16:16sounds hoarse as fuck. So I think he was sick and
- 16:20then they went back and it almost sounds like
- 16:22someone else is speaking his lines in the first
- 16:24couple scenes when they put that giant bowl of
- 16:27chips on the table.
- 16:27KARA: I — yeah, that was huge.
- 16:27DANI: I was
- 16:30dying. I'm like, I want a pool day with snacks
- 16:33afterwards. This seems so nice.
- 16:33KARA: That's so nice.
- 16:36DANI: It's just starting to get warm here. I'm really
- 16:38dying for it. I'm ready.
- 16:38KARA: Daphne tells Bay, Emmett
- 16:41gave me a letter and he would like me to give
- 16:43it to you.
- 16:43DANI: Yeah, I was kind of annoyed at Daphne
- 16:46for this. It felt like not the time or place.
- 16:46KARA: You
- 16:49couldn't wait a day? The boyfriend is here.
- 16:49DANI: Also,
- 16:52her being like, I hope it's okay. I've already
- 16:54left it in your room. I don't know. Like, maybe
- 16:57hold on to it for a couple days.
- 16:57KARA: I think I agree.
- 17:00During this exchange, A turned to me and said,
- 17:03why is she simcomming to Bay if it's just the
- 17:05two of them?
- 17:05DANI: Oh, sweet, sweet A.
- 17:05KARA: And Paolo. Yeah,
- 17:09I get it.
- 17:09DANI: You guys gotta watch the show.
- 17:09KARA: I'm
- 17:12like, A, do you realize that's why we say SimCom
- 17:14Alert every episode?
- 17:14DANI: Every episode. It's for
- 17:17all the SimCom.
- 17:17KARA: It's for all the SimCom.
- 17:17DANI: Who
- 17:19would have thought?
- 17:19KARA: Next scene, Daphne is school
- 17:22shopping in the fakest set I've ever seen.
- 17:22DANI: So
- 17:25fake. She's also wearing a jacket. What month
- 17:28is it right now that she needs to be wearing
- 17:30it?
- 17:30KARA: It's end of August.
- 17:30DANI: It's summer. A jacket
- 17:32inside.
- 17:32KARA: School starts, what, end of August or
- 17:35early September?
- 17:35DANI: I think.
- 17:35KARA: Either way, she should
- 17:39not need a jacket.
- 17:39DANI: No.
- 17:39KARA: But Emmett is there, I don't
- 17:42know, getting pencils. And he comes up and he
- 17:45says, how's Bay? And Daphne's like, she's good.
- 17:49She has a boyfriend now. Emmett is wearing so
- 17:51much foundation in this scene.
- 17:51DANI: I think they were
- 17:54trying to make him look tan.
- 17:54KARA: I think so. Well,
- 17:56maybe the lighting was weird because there was
- 17:58light behind them from the school shopping set?
- 18:02I don't know. It was just very odd.
- 18:02DANI: It was a
- 18:04bad set.
- 18:04KARA: Now Kathryn is helping Bay unpack
- 18:07from her trip to the Galapagos. Kathryn is
- 18:10also done with her book.
- 18:10DANI: Yeah.
- 18:10KARA: It's about to
- 18:14be published.
- 18:14DANI: That's not how that works. It would
- 18:17not have been done and then put out that fast.
- 18:20KARA: That's what I thought. It's— my beautiful friend,
- 18:22Emma, who listens to this pod.
- 18:22DANI: Shout out, Emma.
- 18:24KARA: I think they do like two years in advance.
- 18:24DANI: Yes.
- 18:27KARA: Yeah.
- 18:27DANI: It's a long time.
- 18:27KARA: Correct me if I'm wrong,
- 18:30Emma, but you do this quite a while in advance.
- 18:33DANI: They're maybe rushing it to compete with the
- 18:35other book.
- 18:35KARA: That was my thought. And also, it's
- 18:37still a hot topic. And strike while the iron's
- 18:40hot.
- 18:40DANI: I think maybe they just knew that fans were
- 18:42getting tired of this storyline.
- 18:42KARA: I guess. And
- 18:45then she's like, Bay, did you read the book,
- 18:47at least? You know, like the unpublished copies
- 18:49of my book. And Bay's like, yeah, yeah, totally.
- 18:52DANI: Yeah.
- 18:52KARA: She's lying.
- 18:52DANI: Super funny, great. She's
- 18:54lying. Can I say, I don't care. I don't think
- 18:57Bay should have to read it. I think it's fucked
- 18:59up of Kathryn to expect her to read it, actually.
- 19:01KARA: Bay doesn't have to read it, but maybe she should
- 19:03tell her mom instead of lying.
- 19:03DANI: I don't know.
- 19:05The way Kathryn is, I feel like I can imagine
- 19:08being Bay and getting that sent to her on her,
- 19:12like, vacation trip and being like, I don't want
- 19:14to fucking deal with this. If I tell her I'm
- 19:16not going to read it, it's going to be a whole
- 19:17thing.
- 19:17KARA: Right.
- 19:17DANI: Also, she actually didn't. She
- 19:20just says in the moment, like, yeah, it was great.
- 19:21Super funny. She's not, like, texting her, like,
- 19:24reading it right now. Love it so much.
- 19:24KARA: Right.
- 19:26DANI: Because Kathryn says, I never heard back. And
- 19:28Bay's just like, yeah, it was great.
- 19:28KARA: Also, she
- 19:30was doing work there in the Galapagos. It seemed
- 19:33like it was a Spanish enrichment program?
- 19:33DANI: Yeah,
- 19:35she was like, I had a lot of homework.
- 19:35KARA: Yeah.
- 19:39DANI: Whatever.
- 19:39KARA: I don't know. I feel like we should
- 19:41just leave Bay alone. She's had a rough time.
- 19:43DANI: Exactly. Let's leave Bay alone. I've become a
- 19:45big Bay defender. And I know that Kathryn doesn't
- 19:48know what happened with her and Emmett, like,
- 19:50really.
- 19:50KARA: But she knows they broke up.
- 19:50DANI: Yeah. But
- 19:53it's just like, if you're going to write a
- 19:55book about the most, like, vulnerable, still
- 19:57raw thing happening in your teenage daughter's
- 20:00life, the least you can do is not expect her
- 20:02to read it.
- 20:02KARA: Yeah, that's true.
- 20:02DANI: So.
- 20:02KARA: Yeah, this
- 20:05is a Leave Bay Alone episode. She's like, by the
- 20:07way, I invited your current boyfriend, Alex,
- 20:09to the book party, which is very soon.
- 20:09DANI: Yeah.
- 20:13KARA: This book is being published, like, in two days.
- 20:15DANI: It almost seemed like it's that same evening.
- 20:18KARA: It feels like it. It feels like she got home,
- 20:21they started school, and the book party all happened
- 20:23in one day. It's very strange. Also, the letter
- 20:26that Daphne left on the bed is there. Bay sees
- 20:29it, and she puts it in the closet. And then Kathryn
- 20:32is like, so what happened with Emmett? But before
- 20:35Bay can explain, Regina comes in with aloe, I
- 20:39guess? And now it's exposition time to explain
- 20:42why she has a wrist brace on. And Regina says,
- 20:47oh, you know, signing and cutting hair gave me
- 20:49bad tendonitis. But it's because Constance Marie
- 20:52had carpal tunnel. And she couldn't sign. So
- 20:56they had to write into the show why she couldn't
- 20:58sign, which is really annoying.
- 20:58DANI: Also.
- 20:58KARA: I'm going
- 21:02to be mean. There's so many Deaf people out there
- 21:04who don't have carpal tunnel. What happened,
- 21:06girl?
- 21:06DANI: I do have carpal tunnel.
- 21:06KARA: And you can sign
- 21:09just fine.
- 21:09DANI: And I can sign just fine.
- 21:09KARA: Bay also
- 21:13asks about Angelo and his hearing is in a week
- 21:16and they're all going to present letters to try
- 21:18to get him to stay.
- 21:18DANI: And everyone's being really
- 21:21positive about it.
- 21:21KARA: They're like this is absolutely
- 21:24gonna work.
- 21:24DANI: Totally.
- 21:24KARA: Don't we remember last episode
- 21:27where John was like, I talked to an immigration
- 21:29lawyer.
- 21:29DANI: Yeah.
- 21:29KARA: It's very unlikely that if we explain
- 21:33that him leaving would be undue hardship on the
- 21:37girls that that would work.
- 21:37DANI: Yeah. I'm not like.
- 21:41I don't know. We'll get to it.
- 21:41KARA: We'll get to it.
- 21:43But right now we need to do something else. We're
- 21:45at a restaurant because Daphne is interviewing
- 21:47for a kitchen job.
- 21:47DANI: Yeah. I wish we could skip
- 21:50this.
- 21:50KARA: We're going to have to do it.
- 21:50DANI: So yeah,
- 21:52she is like, I took summer classes. So I'm getting
- 21:56off at two every day. I've been trying to get
- 21:59a job. Like she's telling this lady.
- 21:59KARA: She's very
- 22:01excited.
- 22:01DANI: She's very excited. And then this lady's
- 22:04like, what's your accent? I can't figure it out.
- 22:07Which I think genuinely it's like an illegal
- 22:09question to ask.
- 22:09KARA: I don't think you're allowed
- 22:12to ask about national origin.
- 22:12DANI: No, you aren't.
- 22:12KARA: Yeah.
- 22:15DANI: But I guess I don't know how the service industry
- 22:18works, like things might be more casual there.
- 22:21Like I've only really worked in corporate vibes.
- 22:23KARA: But then Daphne, which she does not have to do, guys.
- 22:27You do not have to do this. She discloses that
- 22:30she is Deaf.
- 22:30DANI: Yeah.
- 22:30KARA: And then everything switches.
- 22:33The interviewer's like, I am so sorry. My dog
- 22:37is Deaf.
- 22:37DANI: UGH.
- 22:37KARA: A was watching this with me and
- 22:41was like, oh my God, it happened to you too?
- 22:43DANI: Jesus Christ. Yeah, she's so apologetic.
- 22:43KARA: She's
- 22:46like, you poor thing.
- 22:46DANI: She literally says, you
- 22:49poor thing.
- 22:49KARA: And then yell talks, IT WAS SO LOVELY
- 22:53MEETING YOU! Story of my life. Poor Daphne. Tough
- 22:57time for the two of them, honestly.
- 22:57DANI: Tough time
- 22:59for the two of them. The thing I want to say,
- 23:02and it's not in defense of this woman. Fuck this
- 23:04woman, she's very ignorant, is that if I were
- 23:06her, I also wouldn't hire Daphne simply because
- 23:08I would not hire a high schooler to work in my
- 23:11fancy kitchen. Is that crazy? My whole thing
- 23:14this episode is I wish they'd picked a more realistic
- 23:16job for her to try to be getting.
- 23:16KARA: Inside out.
- 23:19Inside out? In—N—Out. Inside Out [Laughs].
- 23:19DANI: I was
- 23:22like, the Pixar film? Yeah, In—N—Out. Or like
- 23:25somewhere, yeah, somewhere where like, She's
- 23:27interviewing at like really fancy Kansas City
- 23:30places.
- 23:30KARA: She's a big foodie.
- 23:30DANI: I know. I know. I
- 23:34just—
- 23:34KARA: Also she can start from the bottom of
- 23:36her career. She can start busing. But it seems like
- 23:38she wants to immediately be a prep cook.
- 23:38DANI: She's
- 23:40also a junior. They're juniors.
- 23:40KARA: She's 16.
- 23:40DANI: That's
- 23:44crazy. Go work at Claire's. Like, go work at
- 23:47the mall, girl.
- 23:47KARA: She would be so good.
- 23:47DANI: Go pierce
- 23:49some ears. She'd be great at that. Oh, she'd
- 23:51be so good with the kids.
- 23:51KARA: I know.
- 23:51DANI: So that's why
- 23:54I'm frustrated. I'm like, I just wish the show
- 23:56had picked a different job to make her go through
- 23:59this, so that you could really highlight how ridiculous
- 24:02people are being.
- 24:02KARA: Yeah.
- 24:02DANI: Instead of being like,
- 24:04well, the pedophile chef doesn't. Sorry, spoilers.
- 24:07But, like, the pedophile chef doesn't want the
- 24:10high schooler working in the kitchen. He wants
- 24:12her back at his apartment. So, yeah. Anyway,
- 24:16yeah, but the job interview is awful, and she
- 24:20goes back to the book party and is telling Adrianna
- 24:23and Toby about it.
- 24:23KARA: Oh, yeah, Toby's giving ally.
- 24:26He's like, that's stupid. That's ridiculous.
- 24:29You're amazing. I don't know why they would ever
- 24:31do that.
- 24:31DANI: Yeah, he said, I spent one summer with
- 24:33you. Ally.
- 24:33KARA: And Daphne's like, I wish I could
- 24:37keep it from them, but I don't think it's honest.
- 24:39Yes, you can. Under the ADA, you do not have
- 24:43to disclose your disability.
- 24:43DANI: Okay.
- 24:43KARA: You're only legally
- 24:47required to disclose your disability if you're
- 24:50requesting a reasonable accommodation, like an
- 24:53interpreter. But Daphne was not doing that. So
- 24:55she's not required to disclose her disability.
- 24:57DANI: Yeah.
- 24:57KARA: Daphne goes, I have had 12 interviews.
- 25:00No luck. Okay.
- 25:00DANI: That's why I'm mad.
- 25:00KARA: But then Toby's
- 25:04like, why don't you use nepotism? Also, I think
- 25:08it's fine to ask your mom for help.
- 25:08DANI: No, I'm pro
- 25:10her asking Kathryn for help.
- 25:10KARA: Yeah. I'm very
- 25:13pro that, especially she's coming from a disadvantaged
- 25:16position already. Like, why not use everything
- 25:18you can?
- 25:18DANI: Absolutely. I don't think there's any
- 25:21problem doing that. I think that you should say,
- 25:24don't get me a job at the Kansas City equivalent
- 25:27of Noma since I'm in high school.
- 25:27KARA: Which is what
- 25:30she's going to end up getting.
- 25:30DANI: But Daphne doesn't
- 25:33know how to do that.
- 25:33KARA: But she's such a, it tracks
- 25:35to me because she's such a big foodie already.
- 25:38She's always watching Food Network. She's always
- 25:39cooking and she knows a lot about food. It makes
- 25:42sense that she would go high, you know?
- 25:42DANI: I'm just,
- 25:45like, thinking of The Bear. I just feel like
- 25:47I have so much more— watching this at 12, I was
- 25:49like, okay, yeah, whatever. She's working at
- 25:51a restaurant. And now I'm like, wait, I have
- 25:53so much, like, context for the scale of what
- 25:57she's probably working at. Whatever. Anyway,
- 25:59let's just suspend our disbelief. Daphne's qualified,
- 26:02sort of.
- 26:02KARA: Yeah, she knows how to do everything,
- 26:05which is very shocking to me. How would you know
- 26:07how to prep everything?
- 26:07DANI: Right. I think she's
- 26:10doing a lot more cooking off screen. It happened
- 26:12off screen.
- 26:12KARA: Whatever. Also at the book party,
- 26:15Toby and Bay are chatting and remember they're both
- 26:18victims are being cheated on. But it's okay because
- 26:21Toby apparently has a new girlfriend named Jenna.
- 26:23DANI: Okay. Shout out.
- 26:23KARA: I don't remember Jenna.
- 26:23DANI: Do we
- 26:26meet her?
- 26:26KARA: I don't remember.
- 26:26DANI: I can't wait to find
- 26:28out, guys.
- 26:28KARA: Yeah.
- 26:28DANI: I really don't remember the
- 26:31last like five episodes of this season.
- 26:31KARA: Me neither.
- 26:34DANI: But then I really remember season two.
- 26:34KARA: Me too.
- 26:37DANI: So I don't know what happened there.
- 26:37KARA: All right.
- 26:39Patrick approaches Regina. They're talking about
- 26:42the book and how it's going. He was like, it
- 26:45seems good. No one seems to be, like, tarring
- 26:47and feathering you for keeping it a secret. And
- 26:50Regina's like, yeah, it's going well. They look
- 26:52over at John and Kathryn and how happy they
- 26:55are together. And Patrick is like, I don't get
- 26:58the obsession with marriage. It's not my thing.
- 27:00DANI: This was so random.
- 27:00KARA: Why would you talk about
- 27:02this now?
- 27:02DANI: They have been dating for also at this
- 27:06point so long.
- 27:06KARA: Several months.
- 27:06DANI: Like four or five
- 27:09at least.
- 27:09KARA: I think at this point you would talk
- 27:11about at least what you want going forward.
- 27:11DANI: And
- 27:14not in this way. Like the way they're at like
- 27:16a very nice party and he just goes, no, I don't
- 27:19believe in marriage.
- 27:19KARA: Have you considered the
- 27:21tax advantages? Have you considered health insurance?
- 27:24DANI: A joint bank account.
- 27:24KARA: And the automatic legal
- 27:26status.
- 27:26DANI: So true.
- 27:26KARA: But Regina looks at him and
- 27:28goes, good to know. Thank you.
- 27:28DANI: Because I think
- 27:32later on, isn't she going to be like, well, you
- 27:35said you don't believe in marriage, so why do
- 27:36you care about this?
- 27:36KARA: Yeah.
- 27:36DANI: So evil. Which is
- 27:40so funny, actually. I would do that. Yeah, I
- 27:42love that. I would throw that back in his face.
- 27:44KARA: Alex at the party is reading Kathryn's book.
- 27:48Bay, again, did not read this.
- 27:48DANI: And then he's
- 27:50like, and who's Emmett?
- 27:50KARA: Apparently, Kathryn
- 27:52wrote about Emmett that he came up in his motorcycle
- 27:55looking like a Deaf James Dean. Not wrong.
- 27:55DANI: Yeah,
- 27:58she's not wrong.
- 27:58KARA: But Bay flips out. She grabs
- 28:01her book and she marches straight to Kathryn.
- 28:04DANI: She's not chill about it. Your new boyfriend
- 28:07definitely knows something's up with you and
- 28:09Def James Dean.
- 28:09KARA: He's like, I want to meet Emmett.
- 28:11He sounds cool. And Bay's like, no, you don't.
- 28:13DANI: He says, who's Emmett? He sounds hot. Which is
- 28:16why I was like, Alex is low—key giving bisexual
- 28:18king.
- 28:18KARA: I was going to say bi icon.
- 28:18DANI: Yeah, he's
- 28:21a bi—con.
- 28:21KARA: She goes up to Kathryn. Kathryn's
- 28:23like, of course I added him. He's like the first
- 28:26argument that Regina and I had. He's part of
- 28:29our story.
- 28:29DANI: And he's Daphne's best friend.
- 28:29KARA: Like,
- 28:31he's a big part of our lives. Of course I'm going
- 28:33to add him. I didn't add that you two dated or
- 28:35any of that.
- 28:35DANI: Shout out to Kathryn. That's great.
- 28:37I feel like that's what should have happened
- 28:39there.
- 28:39KARA: Yeah, I think that's completely fine.
- 28:41And Kathryn's like, you really can't complain
- 28:43because you didn't read the book.
- 28:43DANI: Yeah. I think
- 28:46both of them are, I think Bay's right to be like,
- 28:48sorry, I didn't want to fucking read about my
- 28:49own life.
- 28:49KARA: Yeah.
- 28:49DANI: Written by my mom on my vacation.
- 28:52And then Kathryn's like, that's fine, but I
- 28:54don't think you get to complain.
- 28:54KARA: Yeah. I think
- 28:56they're both right.
- 28:56DANI: I think they're both right.
- 28:57But I don't even think they're mad at each other.
- 28:59Bay's just kind of like, all right, heard.
- 28:59KARA: Yeah.
- 29:01Bay kind of was like, all right, respect.
- 29:01DANI: Yeah.
- 29:03KARA: Which was good.
- 29:03DANI: And then Daphne asks Kathryn
- 29:06for her help. She says, can you do nepotism for
- 29:09me?
- 29:09KARA: And Kathryn's like, I would love to, because
- 29:12I love you.
- 29:12DANI: Yeah, it's really sweet because Daphne's
- 29:15like, I'm sorry, I don't want it to be weird
- 29:16for you. And Kathryn's like, why would it be
- 29:18weird? This is literally my favorite thing in
- 29:20the world.
- 29:20KARA: Yeah.
- 29:20DANI: Is like helping my child get
- 29:22a leg up in the industry that they want.
- 29:22KARA: Yeah.
- 29:25DANI: She's like obsessed with that.
- 29:25KARA: That is so true.
- 29:27She is.
- 29:27DANI: And then John is like, ugh, my wife has
- 29:31a life. She's busy.
- 29:31KARA: But the cable guy's coming!
- 29:35DANI: The cable guy's coming and there's a game on
- 29:37later!
- 29:37KARA: And Kathryn's like, sorry, girl. It's
- 29:41book publishing day.
- 29:41DANI: Yeah, she's like, I'm going
- 29:43to whatever, an interview. I don't actually know
- 29:45what she has to do.
- 29:45KARA: She has to start a blog and
- 29:47go see the editor about it.
- 29:47DANI: Oh, okay. And he
- 29:50has a tee time.
- 29:50KARA: She says, move it.
- 29:50DANI: He says, my
- 29:54tee time [WHINES].
- 29:54KARA: I know.
- 29:54DANI: It's got something
- 29:57to do with the car wash business, but she's like,
- 29:59okay, fine, whatever.
- 29:59KARA: I get it.
- 29:59DANI: Also, can I just
- 30:02say, you live with so many other people. There
- 30:05were seven people.
- 30:05KARA: Adrianna can't stay home and
- 30:09let the cable guy in?
- 30:09DANI: Right. Regina's not around?
- 30:12I don't know. It's just like, find someone.
- 30:14It's not that big of a deal.
- 30:14KARA: It's really not.
- 30:16DANI: But John's very upset.
- 30:16KARA: Yeah. Also, it's book
- 30:19release day.
- 30:19DANI: It's book day. It's book day.
- 30:19KARA: It's
- 30:22day of book.
- 30:22DANI: It's day of book. It's also back
- 30:25to school day.
- 30:25KARA: Bay has a Hello Kitty lunchbox
- 30:29and Daphne, I couldn't really see Daphne's lunchbox.
- 30:32It was either a Strawberry Shortcake or a Rainbow
- 30:34Brite.
- 30:34DANI: I don't feel that Bay would be a Hello
- 30:36Kitty girl.
- 30:36KARA: Interesting. I could see that, like
- 30:39anime, Sanrio.
- 30:39DANI: Do you know how Hello Kitty is
- 30:42not a cat? It's a girl?
- 30:42KARA: It's not a cat, it's
- 30:45just a girl?
- 30:45DANI: Yeah.
- 30:45KARA: A human girl?
- 30:45DANI: Like Hello Kitty
- 30:47canonically is a little girl dressed up as a
- 30:49cat.
- 30:49KARA: No, I didn't know that.
- 30:49DANI: Like wearing a cat
- 30:51costume. She's not a cat. Yeah. Isn't that crazy?
- 30:55KARA: That is crazy.
- 30:55DANI: Yeah. Anyway, Bay goes to school
- 30:58and Simone is there. I thought that they were
- 31:00just going to exit Simone out. I thought they
- 31:02were going to write her on out.
- 31:02KARA: No, but Simone
- 31:04is chasing after Bay. And it's like, I am so
- 31:07sorry.
- 31:07DANI: Girl, give it up. The way she's like,
- 31:09you guys made such a cute couple. Don't let me
- 31:12fucking your boyfriend ruin your boyfriend and
- 31:14your's relationship.
- 31:14KARA: Like, literally, what can
- 31:16I do to help? And Bay goes, leave. Switch schools.
- 31:19DANI: I actually am obsessed with Bay just going, I
- 31:21want you to change schools.
- 31:21KARA: I think this was
- 31:23kind of a callback to when Simone bullied that
- 31:26girl so bad she had to switch schools.
- 31:26DANI: Yeah.
- 31:29KARA: I think Bay was like, your turn.
- 31:29DANI: Yeah, go.
- 31:29KARA: Bye.
- 31:32Yeah.
- 31:32DANI: Regina is visiting Angelo at the holding
- 31:37facility that he's in.
- 31:37KARA: At the ICE facility.
- 31:37DANI: That's
- 31:40five minutes from their house.
- 31:40KARA: That's five minutes
- 31:42from their house because his hearing is coming
- 31:44up and she brought over a suit and tie that he
- 31:47can wear.
- 31:47DANI: This sounds like a job for his lawyer.
- 31:49Does it not?
- 31:49KARA: That's a great question. I don't
- 31:52know.
- 31:52DANI: Or Bay. Send Bay over.
- 31:52KARA: Why Bay?
- 31:52DANI: So that
- 31:55she can get some face time with her dad.
- 31:55KARA: But
- 31:58in the ICE detention facility?
- 31:58DANI: She's already
- 32:00gone.
- 32:00KARA: I don't know. But Angelo's like, I'm really
- 32:03nervous about this. And Regina says, I have a
- 32:06great feeling about this. And I'm never wrong.
- 32:08That's literally what she says.
- 32:08DANI: Says the woman
- 32:10with the worst instincts in the world.
- 32:10KARA: A turned
- 32:12to me and said, what?
- 32:12DANI: I'm feeling really good
- 32:15about this.
- 32:15KARA: Okay. Yeah. Daphne, I know.
- 32:20We're going to be groaning.
- 32:20DANI: Can we spoil this
- 32:22plot point for people? I think we should, right,
- 32:25because we wanted to give a trigger warning.
- 32:25KARA: Yeah
- 32:27okay.
- 32:27DANI: Okay. So trigger warning what, so age—gap
- 32:32relationship?
- 32:32KARA: Daphne is going to work in a
- 32:34kitchen with this new character we're about to
- 32:37meet named Chef Jeff.
- 32:37DANI: And that is his name.
- 32:37KARA: That
- 32:40is his name. We're gonna call him Chef Jeff.
- 32:40DANI: Chef
- 32:42Jeff.
- 32:42KARA: And he, I would say canonically is about
- 32:46late 20s, early 30s. He's the head chef of this
- 32:49restaurant.
- 32:49DANI: I think he's 27.
- 32:49KARA: Great. Anyways, he
- 32:53is an adult and Daphne is a minor. And later
- 32:56on, there will be an age—gap relationship that
- 32:59is very inappropriate. And it seems like he has
- 33:02groomed her. So if this is not something you
- 33:05would like to listen to, that is fine because
- 33:09Episodes 1 through 22 do not have Chef Jeff in
- 33:12them.
- 33:12DANI: Yes. But we are going to rail against him
- 33:16for the rest of the season because it's so disgusting.
- 33:19KARA: But anyways, if you're uncomfortable or you're
- 33:21just not feeling up to listen to that, that's
- 33:22totally fine. Take care of yourself.
- 33:22DANI: Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:25So Chef Jeff is there.
- 33:25KARA: Played by Justin Brunin,
- 33:29who's in that soap opera, All My Children. Daphne's
- 33:32like, love you. You're amazing.
- 33:32DANI: Yeah, she's
- 33:35fangirling out.
- 33:35KARA: This is a fancy restaurant. It's
- 33:38called Maize.
- 33:38DANI: Yeah. It's like, it's not actually
- 33:42Noma, like I was exaggerating, but it's upscale
- 33:45fancy. Like, they're serving foam as dishes.
- 33:49You know a place is fancy when they're like,
- 33:52here's some deconstructed foam.
- 33:52KARA: It's $40 plus
- 33:55per dish.
- 33:55DANI: Yeah.
- 33:55KARA: You can guess. Chef Jeff is like,
- 34:00I literally don't give a fuck. Get to work. You're
- 34:03only here because your mommy knows someone.
- 34:03DANI: Yeah.
- 34:06And Daphne's like, oh shit, I thought this was
- 34:07an interview. And he's like, nope, you got the
- 34:10job already.
- 34:10KARA: And Daphne's like jumping for joy.
- 34:13DANI: Yeah. Also in the background, I just want to
- 34:15call out that one of her other co—workers is
- 34:17cute. I don't think anything's going to happen
- 34:19there, obviously, because of Daphne.
- 34:19KARA: Is this
- 34:21the one that she talks with later?
- 34:21DANI: Yes. Who's
- 34:23nice to her.
- 34:23KARA: Yeah.
- 34:23DANI: He's handsome.
- 34:23KARA: I think he
- 34:25has a crush on her, but then she's, like, no.
- 34:27DANI: I think they have, like, yeah, they have, like,
- 34:29a little friendship. And he's, like, more age
- 34:30—appropriate. Like, he's, I mean, still too old
- 34:33for her, but I think he's, like, in college.
- 34:34KARA: He's giving, like, freshman in college.
- 34:34DANI: Yeah.
- 34:37KARA: With, like, a job. I don't know. Or maybe, like.
- 34:40DANI: He's giving, like, no, he's giving, like, college.
- 34:42Yeah, he's giving, like, 20, 21.
- 34:42KARA: Okay.
- 34:42DANI: To me.
- 34:45I don't know. But also it's hard because like
- 34:47Katie LeClerc, the actress.
- 34:47KARA: Is like 23, 24
- 34:50while filming this.
- 34:50DANI: Yeah. And she looks a little
- 34:52bit older. Like she just like looks like an adult.
- 34:54KARA: But she is a child.
- 34:54DANI: Canonically in the show,
- 34:57she is a child and Chef Jeff is an adult.
- 34:57KARA: Yeah.
- 35:00Which no one talks about in this.
- 35:00DANI: Yeah. That's
- 35:03like not the issue.
- 35:03KARA: No. I remember even Kathryn
- 35:06and Regina meet him and they're like, oh, he's
- 35:08cute. Daphne has a cute little crush.
- 35:08DANI: Yeah.
- 35:10They're like not bothered by that. I think it's
- 35:12that he's her boss, isn't it? That's why they're
- 35:15like, this is wrong. Not because he's a grown
- 35:17man.
- 35:17KARA: Not about the age. I know. It's...
- 35:17DANI: [GROANS] Okay.
- 35:21KARA: Much to discuss.
- 35:21DANI: Okay, wait. This was happening
- 35:22a lot. Let's talk about this more. Let's unpack
- 35:25this. This was happening a lot in. — wasn't Pretty
- 35:28Little Liars also ABC Family?
- 35:28KARA: Yes, with Ezra.
- 35:31DANI: Yeah, and you were supposed to root for that
- 35:33relationship.
- 35:33KARA: Yeah, we loved him and Ari together.
- 35:36And now we're like, that's insane. He's a freak.
- 35:38DANI: So, like, were they trying to, like, groom young
- 35:41women to be like, it's completely normal that
- 35:43my, like, 27—year—old boss slash teacher is
- 35:46my boyfriend?
- 35:46KARA: I don't know.
- 35:46DANI: That, like, seems
- 35:48insane.
- 35:48KARA: It's so—
- 35:48DANI: Like, I understand them trying
- 35:52to be like, ooh, like, like sexy forbidden
- 35:55love. I get that like forbidden love was like
- 35:57a big theme. Again, Twilight's happening during this
- 35:59era and obviously Edward is canonically like
- 36:02109 years old but it's different contextually
- 36:05because he's a 17 year old.
- 36:05KARA: He's a vampire, whatever.
- 36:07DANI: Yeah this is, it's different when it's your predator
- 36:11boss.
- 36:11KARA: Or your teacher?
- 36:11DANI: Yeah your teacher is fucking
- 36:16insane because it's even, I think for Jeff, doesn't
- 36:20Daphne like lie about the fact that she's in
- 36:22high school? Doesn't he not know and she's—
- 36:22KARA: I think
- 36:26she does lie to him.
- 36:26DANI: Not to defend him but
- 36:28like there's some context where it's like he
- 36:31thinks she's like 19.
- 36:31KARA: Yeah and then he's like
- 36:34uh oh but then I think he still is like, I like you
- 36:37anyway.
- 36:37DANI: No yeah yeah yeah. After he finds— but I
- 36:39think that's how they try to justify it, is being
- 36:41like well he didn't know when he fell for her.
- 36:43What, gross, okay. You can tell she's wearing a
- 36:46side braid, sorry.
- 36:46KARA: The whole time.
- 36:46DANI: She's wearing
- 36:49a side braid. That's a teenager. That's a 16—year—
- 36:53—old girl.
- 36:53KARA: I know.
- 36:53DANI: But, yeah, this was a thing
- 36:55on Pretty Little Liars. I didn't watch. So I
- 36:57only now see the clips of people being like,
- 37:00oh, my God, can you believe we were all, like,
- 37:02rooting for this?
- 37:02KARA: I know. I remember thinking
- 37:04Ezra was hot.
- 37:04DANI: Well, yeah.
- 37:04KARA: I know. It's messed
- 37:06up.
- 37:06DANI: Okay.
- 37:06KARA: After school, after Simone and that
- 37:10whole thing with Bay is like, why don't you just
- 37:12switch schools and fuck off? Bay storms home,
- 37:15and she's about to text Emmett. She whips out her
- 37:18phone. She types in Emmett, but then she's like,
- 37:20Emmett, put the phone down. Smart. Smart. I think.
- 37:23Then she goes into a closet and she picks up
- 37:25the box where she threw the letter in. And she's
- 37:27also going to look through pictures of her and
- 37:29Emmett wistfully.
- 37:29DANI: The same damn photo. The amount
- 37:32of times I've had to see this selfie of them
- 37:34on the fucking motorcycle.
- 37:34KARA: In the junkyard. Enough.
- 37:37DANI: Enough! And you know why they're pulling out
- 37:39that photo? Because that was the only damn time
- 37:41they were happy together as a couple.
- 37:41KARA: Literally.
- 37:43DANI: It's that and them like fighting with swords
- 37:45right after he fucking cheated on her.
- 37:45KARA: The only
- 37:48two times.
- 37:48DANI: The only two times they had fun together.
- 37:51KARA: She opens the letter.
- 37:51DANI: Yeah.
- 37:51KARA: And there's directions
- 37:54somewhere.
- 37:54DANI: And she drives straight there.
- 37:54KARA: Yeah,
- 37:57she gets in The Thing and drives to like a warehouse.
- 38:01DANI: Yeah, it's just like a nondescript lot.
- 38:01KARA: And we
- 38:05see art now, street art. And it's the timeline
- 38:08of their relationship. And we also get a beautiful
- 38:10timeline check here. It says, first meet, June
- 38:142011. First kiss, September 2011. First birthday
- 38:19surprise. October 2011. First I love you. February
- 38:232012. Then Emmett makes a mistake, which must
- 38:27be May, June 2012. And then Bay forgives Emmett.
- 38:33Bay and Emmett forever.
- 38:33DANI: What do you mean they
- 38:36met in June? That's what it says?
- 38:36KARA: It says first
- 38:39meet in June and it has a picture of eyes.
- 38:39DANI: Right.
- 38:42Okay. That's all fine and well. When they met,
- 38:45school was already in session because Bay was
- 38:48going to school. Because Bay was still dating
- 38:50Liam and broke up with. The first episode, they're
- 38:53in school taking the blood test.
- 38:53KARA: Yeah.
- 38:53DANI: And then
- 38:56it's a couple of weeks later. And then Daphne
- 38:59moves in. And the same episode that Daphne moves
- 39:02in and they meet Emmett. First of all, they meet
- 39:05Emmett because Emmett comes to pick Daphne up
- 39:07for school.
- 39:07KARA: Maybe it's the very end. But that
- 39:10doesn't make sense. It's the very end of the
- 39:12school year.
- 39:12DANI: But then we don't have summer because
- 39:15they're in school.
- 39:15KARA: But then summer doesn't happen.
- 39:17DANI: So the show fucked up. That's why I'm saying,
- 39:19like, timeline check, it doesn't count.
- 39:19KARA: No.
- 39:19DANI: The
- 39:22show fucked up. They did not meet in June. Because
- 39:25school was happening.
- 39:25KARA: Or did they— Or maybe it
- 39:28happened off screen. Or they met.
- 39:28DANI: We saw them
- 39:31meet for the first time. For sure, they did.
- 39:33Because we see Emmett go, who's that? And Daphne's
- 39:35like, me, in another life.
- 39:35KARA: Yeah, that's right.
- 39:38DANI: And then the next episode, he's picking up Daphne
- 39:41from school. Guys, watch your own show. I understand
- 39:45when they wrote this episode, it had been a while
- 39:47since they wrote the pilot. But, like, come on.
- 39:49Let's lock in a little.
- 39:49KARA: They could have had them
- 39:52meet in September and maybe just cram everything
- 39:54shorter.
- 39:54DANI: Right. The way that it was. It was crammed.
- 39:57KARA: Yeah.
- 39:57DANI: Be accurate. Secondly, this art is ugly.
- 40:01KARA: Oof.
- 40:01DANI: It's really ugly. It's childish and it's
- 40:05giving, like, Bay's, like, sketches.
- 40:05KARA: It's giving
- 40:07Bay sketches. I think it's the thought. I thought
- 40:09it was sweet.
- 40:09DANI: Like, yes, the thought counts,
- 40:12but, like, Emmett is a good artist.
- 40:12KARA: Is he?
- 40:12DANI: Well,
- 40:15he managed to put up her birthday graffiti.
- 40:15KARA: Right,
- 40:19but we don't know how he did that. Like, if that
- 40:20was a stencil of Bay's already.
- 40:20DANI: He's like a photographer.
- 40:23I'm just like, I don't know. I think he could
- 40:24have done better. He's not a good photographer
- 40:27either. Okay, the art is bad.
- 40:27KARA: Maybe Bay looks
- 40:30at that and goes, that's shit, actually. I don't
- 40:32want to be with him.
- 40:32DANI: I think I would have looked
- 40:34at that and been like, not only is it bad, but
- 40:37he made such a big stink about, like, I can't
- 40:39do street art with you anymore. I don't want
- 40:41to get arrested because of you again. So for
- 40:43him to go and do more of it feels insane.
- 40:43KARA: I was
- 40:47thinking that, too. I'm like, so you're going
- 40:48to do the thing that you got arrested for? All
- 40:50right.
- 40:50DANI: That you, like, made Bay's problem. You
- 40:53know?
- 40:53KARA: I just...Emmett.
- 40:53DANI: I understand he's trying
- 40:57to do a grand gesture. This felt like the wrong
- 40:59one.
- 40:59KARA: I agree. I was like, the gesture's sweet.
- 41:03I just don't know. And it doesn't even work at
- 41:05the end.
- 41:05DANI: No. Because she doesn't— it's not even
- 41:07like she goes straight to him to be like, what
- 41:09the fuck? She like really.
- 41:09KARA: She ponders.
- 41:09DANI: She ponders.
- 41:11KARA: She does ponder. Daphne comes back home after
- 41:15her first day on the job. And she tells Kathryn,
- 41:17she's like, Mom, I had the best day ever.
- 41:17DANI: Yeah.
- 41:20KARA: Thank you. Thank you for giving me this job.
- 41:21DANI: She's telling her about family meal.
- 41:21KARA: Yeah. She
- 41:24just discovered what family meal is.
- 41:24DANI: She just
- 41:26discovered family meal. And she said the best
- 41:28part, I didn't have to cook it.
- 41:28KARA: Yeah. So now
- 41:31she's in the kitchen. It's like her second day
- 41:34at work or something. We have a coworker friend.
- 41:36We don't know his name yet.
- 41:36DANI: No, but he's cute.
- 41:38KARA: And he's prepping raw chicken. And Daphne is
- 41:41trimming artichokes. And the guy is like, oh,
- 41:44I didn't realize there was artichoke on the menu
- 41:46tonight. And Daphne's like, yeah, they told me
- 41:47to prep it. And then Jeff approaches and he's
- 41:50like, you dumb bitch. I said haricot vert.
- 41:50DANI: I
- 41:54don't know what that is. When he was like, do
- 41:56you not know what haricot vert is? I was literally
- 41:58like, no, I don't.
- 41:58KARA: It's green beans.
- 41:58DANI: Just say
- 42:01green beans!
- 42:01KARA: Yeah. And then at that exact moment,
- 42:05another cook says, behind, but Daphne, of course,
- 42:10can't hear. And they bump into each other and
- 42:12all the food falls on the floor. It's upsetting.
- 42:16And then Jeff kind of kicks her when she's down
- 42:18and he's like, get out of my kitchen. Daphne
- 42:21looks crazy with her side ponytail.
- 42:21DANI: That's not
- 42:23going to keep your hair out of the food.
- 42:23KARA: I was
- 42:25just thinking that. Your hair needs to be up
- 42:27in a way.
- 42:27DANI: Yeah.
- 42:27KARA: No hairnets in this kitchen,
- 42:30guys. No gloves either.
- 42:30DANI: No. So Chef Jeff.
- 42:30KARA: She
- 42:35goes, so this happened. The artichoke thing happened
- 42:38because you didn't face me when you speak. So
- 42:40one reasonable request I would like is that you
- 42:43face me when you speak. And he's like, no.
- 42:43DANI: He
- 42:45literally just goes, no.
- 42:45KARA: This is my kitchen.
- 42:49I'll do whatever the fuck I want. And then he
- 42:51goes on like this rant.
- 42:51DANI: Yeah. My favorite part
- 42:55about this rant, like it's so stupid, is him
- 42:58like kind of flexing on himself as he's doing
- 43:02it. He goes, I can't be a jockey because I'm
- 43:046'4.
- 43:04KARA: He goes, you can't do everything. I can't
- 43:07be a jockey because I'm too hot and tall.
- 43:07DANI: Yeah.
- 43:09He's like, my sister can't be on Broadway because
- 43:11she don't sing so good.
- 43:11KARA: Is that
- 43:14what he says?
- 43:14DANI: She don't sing?
- 43:14KARA: Okay. And you can't
- 43:17be a cook because you're Deaf, basically. You
- 43:19know, it's very, like, gross and paternalistic.
- 43:21Very discriminatory language, too.
- 43:21DANI: Yeah.
- 43:21KARA: And
- 43:23then he says, fuck the ADA. Go wash dishes. So
- 43:26under the ADA, there's an essential functions
- 43:29rule. So Daphne just needs to be able to do the
- 43:31essential functions of a job. And if she was
- 43:33hired as a prep cook, let's assume she was hired
- 43:35as a prep cook.
- 43:35DANI: Yeah.
- 43:35KARA: Her essential function
- 43:37is wiping down the kitchen counters and, like,
- 43:40prepping veggies. So, if she's tired to work
- 43:44in the kitchen, they need to first try to accommodate
- 43:47her so she can do these essential functions.
- 43:49Have the mirror or have a separate workstation
- 43:52so people aren't bumping into her. Also, kitchen
- 43:56accidents happen all the time, even to hearing
- 43:58people. And just using one incident.
- 43:58DANI: In The Bear,
- 44:02Ayo's character stabs Cousin.
- 44:02KARA: Using one incident
- 44:06to justify her being demoted to dishwasher is
- 44:09discriminatory, obviously. I just need her to,
- 44:12like, talk to the general manager. There's no
- 44:14general manager cast in the show.
- 44:14DANI: No. This is
- 44:17his restaurant. Like, he is the, I think the
- 44:21buck stops with him. Although that doesn't make
- 44:23sense because then he's like, well, you have
- 44:24a friend in high places. So she was hired against
- 44:27his will.
- 44:27KARA: Yeah, he didn't hire her.
- 44:27DANI: It's kind
- 44:29of giving the same situation with the basketball
- 44:31coach.
- 44:31KARA: Yeah.
- 44:31DANI: Who was, like, forced to have her
- 44:33on the team.
- 44:33KARA: Yeah, but we don't know the principal,
- 44:36you know?
- 44:36DANI: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:36KARA: Yeah, you're right.
- 44:39Okay, we'll get back to this. Because Kathryn
- 44:42returns home from a book thing. And John
- 44:44is like, where's my baked ziti?
- 44:44DANI: It's really bad.
- 44:47I feel like they're regressing John's character
- 44:49for the sake of this.
- 44:49KARA: It is crazy.
- 44:49DANI: He's like,
- 44:52what's for dinner? And he's just like chilling
- 44:54at the computer.
- 44:54KARA: She's like, so you could be
- 44:56cooking right now if you wanted to.
- 44:56DANI: Yeah.
- 44:56KARA: It's
- 44:59not that hard. And John's like, this book is
- 45:01such a commitment. I thought like once it was
- 45:03book day, it'd be done.
- 45:03DANI: He's like, book day happened
- 45:06two days ago. Aren't we done with book?
- 45:06KARA: And Kathryn's
- 45:09like, so book just started.
- 45:09DANI: Book just begins
- 45:12now.
- 45:12KARA: Yeah. I need to do tours. I need to do signings.
- 45:17I need to go speak on TV.
- 45:17DANI: And then she's like,
- 45:19and once this is done, I'm going to do something
- 45:22else, by the way.
- 45:22KARA: Because I love being a working
- 45:24woman.
- 45:24DANI: Yeah.
- 45:24KARA: Respect.
- 45:24DANI: Girl boss.
- 45:24KARA: And John's like,
- 45:27things are changing around here.
- 45:27DANI: Yeah. And she's
- 45:30like, okay, get used to it. And he's like, I
- 45:33will. To his credit a little bit. He goes, I'll
- 45:35adjust.
- 45:35KARA: I think he's just surprised at how much
- 45:38of a commitment it was.
- 45:38DANI: Someone teach John how
- 45:40to order delivery Thai food.
- 45:40KARA: Or boil water and
- 45:44pour pasta in.
- 45:44DANI: Sure.
- 45:44KARA: You know?
- 45:44DANI: Or Thai food.
- 45:47KARA: Bay and Alex are on a date and she's finally
- 45:50giving him the tea and she's telling him about
- 45:53Angelo.
- 45:53DANI: This was so unfair. She was just like,
- 45:56oh, I just like wish you'd been there. Like he's
- 45:58trying to ask questions and she's like. You just,
- 46:00like, kind of had to be there. I don't know.
- 46:02It's like, okay. KARA He's like, I don't get it.
- 46:04So is Angelo gay? And she's like, no, that's
- 46:07the other Angelo.
- 46:07DANI: She's like, I just wish you'd
- 46:09been there. You'd lived it with me.
- 46:09KARA: She's yearning
- 46:11for Emmett. And then they go back to talking
- 46:13about sea turtles.
- 46:13DANI: But I actually think, and
- 46:15we'll find this to be true, that it would be
- 46:17good for her to date someone who maybe wasn't
- 46:20there for all that drama. Because it's, like,
- 46:22good to have someone that's separate from it.
- 46:24KARA: That's true. No Ty and no Emmett. Daphne returns
- 46:27home from work after having an awful day. And
- 46:30Kathryn's like, how'd it go? Did you have a
- 46:32family meal? Did you make mussels? And I like
- 46:34the way she signed mussels, like the food, but
- 46:36she points to like the muscles on her biceps.
- 46:39It was really cute. And Daphne goes, nothing
- 46:40happened, bye.
- 46:40DANI: When Daphne's down. She's real
- 46:43down.
- 46:43KARA: And she doesn't let anyone help her.
- 46:43DANI: No,
- 46:47she like—
- 46:47KARA: It's giving episode six where she
- 46:50worked in that kitchen at Buckner.
- 46:50DANI: Yes.
- 46:50KARA: But she
- 46:53had that cooking class.
- 46:53DANI: Yeah.
- 46:53KARA: So sad.
- 46:53DANI: She, like,
- 46:56looks like a sad little puppy.
- 46:56KARA: I know. I get
- 46:59that she doesn't want Mommy fighting for her,
- 47:01but this is workplace discrimination.
- 47:01DANI: Yeah, Daphne
- 47:05feels a very specific way. She's sort of a, like,
- 47:10bootstraps.
- 47:10KARA: Yeah.
- 47:10DANI: Deaf person.
- 47:10KARA: She really is. She's—
- 47:14DANI: Like there's a specific term for that. I know
- 47:17that that's like— we were talking about that when
- 47:18it came to Trash.
- 47:18KARA: Yeah, that's exactly what I was
- 47:21thinking right now. She's basically like I don't
- 47:23want to be like the other Deaf people who have
- 47:25all these hardships and they're being discriminated
- 47:27against. I'm different.
- 47:27DANI: It's like calling back
- 47:29to her telling Travis to go sell pencils at the
- 47:32airport and then sue people when they don't buy
- 47:34them.
- 47:34KARA: Right, it's very strange.
- 47:34DANI: Yeah.
- 47:34KARA: I just. Part
- 47:39of me wants to shake her by the shoulders and
- 47:41be like, Daphne, first of all, you need a community.
- 47:44DANI: Yeah, she does.
- 47:44KARA: Of people to talk to.
- 47:44DANI: And she
- 47:47also—
- 47:47KARA: We don't know— she doesn't speak to anyone
- 47:49about this at Carlton. She didn't speak to Emmett
- 47:51about this.
- 47:51DANI: No.
- 47:51KARA: Nor does she really have any
- 47:53adult Deaf role models besides Melody.
- 47:53DANI: Yeah.
- 47:57KARA: That she could talk to about experiencing workplace
- 48:00discrimination. Like, I think there should have
- 48:02been a scene either this episode or the next
- 48:04to be like work sucks and here's why and Melody
- 48:07could provide some advice.
- 48:07DANI: Yeah it's very frustrating.
- 48:11KARA: Yeah.
- 48:11DANI: To watch her go through it because yes, she
- 48:14is unwilling to let anyone else advocate for
- 48:17her but then I also feel that she is slow to
- 48:20advocate for herself.
- 48:20KARA: Yeah.
- 48:20DANI: In this situation. Which
- 48:24I get. She's coming into a kitchen. It's a job
- 48:27that the chef already is like, I don't want you
- 48:29here. You were forced upon me by nepotism. Whatever.
- 48:33Take away her being Deaf. She's still— I guess
- 48:36they don't know she's in high school— but like
- 48:37she's still like a young girl that like was forced
- 48:40into this kitchen role against the chef's will,
- 48:43whatever. And then I feel like up front to not
- 48:46be like, I need to you to face me when you're
- 48:49speaking.
- 48:49KARA: Yes.
- 48:49DANI: By the way, one small accommodation
- 48:52I need. I need you to look at me when you talk.
- 48:54KARA: And a very reasonable accommodation.
- 48:54DANI: Yeah, very
- 48:57reasonable.
- 48:57KARA: Yeah, I wrote a list of potential
- 48:59accommodations that the kitchen could do.
- 48:59DANI: Please,
- 49:02let's hear it.
- 49:02KARA: For tickets, have digital tickets
- 49:05or write them down. Have prep written down. So
- 49:09instead of Chef Jeff being like, Daphne, do the
- 49:10haricot vert. He can write down like, so—and
- 49:13—so is doing the chicken. So—and—so is doing
- 49:15the onions. So—and—so is doing haricot vert.
- 49:18DANI: I feel that that would be helpful for the whole
- 49:19kitchen.
- 49:19KARA: Literally everyone.
- 49:19DANI: What is that called?
- 49:21It's like a term where when you make an accommodation.
- 49:25Everyone benefits.
- 49:25KARA: It's like universal design, it's
- 49:28the curb cut effect?
- 49:28DANI: Yes, the curb cut effect.
- 49:30KARA: It's a curb cut effect.
- 49:30DANI: The curb cut effect.
- 49:32Everyone fucking loves a curb cut.
- 49:32KARA: Yeah, it benefits
- 49:35everyone. Not just people in wheelchairs, but
- 49:37for people who have—
- 49:37DANI: People with strollers,
- 49:38people with bikes.
- 49:38DANI: Yeah. People with all kinds
- 49:40of disabilities, but also just people, like,
- 49:42people in heels who don't want to step off the
- 49:44curb.
- 49:44KARA: Yeah.
- 49:44DANI: Like, it benefits everyone.
- 49:44KARA: Yeah,
- 49:47so the same thing with, like, writing prep on
- 49:48the board or having digital orders or things like
- 49:50that.
- 49:50DANI: Or, like, I like when the movies have captions.
- 49:55I would prefer it if the movie theaters would
- 49:57mostly have captions. That would be very nice
- 50:00for everyone. Also, because sound design in film
- 50:03is getting worse. And that is like an actual—
- 50:05it's same with lighting design. But sometimes
- 50:08I need a little help to understand, follow what's
- 50:10going on.
- 50:10KARA: Oh, my God. Yeah. It's so dark.
- 50:10DANI: Yeah.
- 50:14I can't see anything or it's so bright. It's
- 50:16too bright. There's no mood lighting. Anyway,
- 50:19curb cut effect. Beneficial for everyone. I feel
- 50:22if I was working in that kitchen, I would love
- 50:24if all my instructions were also written down
- 50:25in case I forget something.
- 50:25KARA: Yeah.
- 50:25DANI: Because I'm
- 50:27not actually great at listening to instructions
- 50:30and then remembering them.
- 50:30KARA: No.
- 50:30DANI: That's not the
- 50:32way I process things. So...
- 50:32KARA: I used to always
- 50:34get stressed watching Hell's Kitchen because
- 50:36Gordon Ramsay would read, like, one risotto and
- 50:39two steak, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
- 50:41blah. And everyone goes, yes, chef. There's
- 50:43no way I remember that.
- 50:43DANI: Also, waiters write things
- 50:46down. Like, they write the ticket down.
- 50:46KARA: But then
- 50:48usually they read it out loud.
- 50:48DANI: Do they? Oh, I
- 50:51don't like that system. I would be really bad
- 50:53in a kitchen.
- 50:53KARA: I think now it's changed.
- 50:53DANI: Right,
- 50:56with technology.
- 50:56KARA: Because usually they'll just,
- 50:57like, they input the order into the POS system
- 51:00and then it comes up.
- 51:00DANI: Yes.
- 51:00KARA: Written down. And
- 51:02then they just read it.
- 51:02DANI: Yes. But I don't even
- 51:05think Daphne's plate— like she's not plating
- 51:07things. She's just doing prep.
- 51:07KARA: She's just prepping
- 51:09so all they have to do is write down I need you
- 51:12to prep these five things tonight.
- 51:12DANI: Yeah, and it's
- 51:14a good call that yeah she doesn't really need
- 51:16to be moving around the kitchen if they have
- 51:17her at one station.
- 51:17KARA: No.
- 51:17DANI: So she doesn't need to
- 51:20be worried about bumping into people.
- 51:20KARA: No.
- 51:20DANI: And the
- 51:23mirror is a great idea.
- 51:23KARA: The mirror is a great
- 51:25idea which she does do herself with no help from
- 51:27the restaurant.
- 51:27DANI: Yeah.
- 51:27KARA: Whatever. Whatever. Back on
- 51:31the date with Alex and Bay, Bay sees a motorcycle
- 51:33and she goes, God, I miss him. Alex, I'm breaking
- 51:36up.
- 51:36DANI: Alex is talking and she shoots to the side. I
- 51:40feel so bad.
- 51:40KARA: Then she turns to him and she's
- 51:42like, Alex. And he goes, I know.
- 51:42DANI: He goes, I know.
- 51:45It's that Deaf James Dean, right?
- 51:45KARA: It's not you.
- 51:48It's me. I get it. You want to break up. And
- 51:49she's like, yeah, I'm sorry.
- 51:49DANI: Also, they have
- 51:52nothing in common.
- 51:52KARA: No. Oh, he's vacation boyfriend.
- 51:55DANI: He's vacation boyfriend. It's really important
- 51:57to learn that vacation boyfriends rock, but you
- 52:00can't bring them home.
- 52:00KARA: And that's beautiful.
- 52:02DANI: That's beautiful.
- 52:02KARA: She's young.
- 52:02DANI: Let it be a forever
- 52:05encapsulated beautiful thing.
- 52:05KARA: Yeah.
- 52:05DANI: It's like
- 52:07high school relationships. You're supposed to
- 52:09sort of leave them there.
- 52:09KARA: Some people don't.
- 52:11DANI: I know. And they regret it usually.
- 52:11KARA: Sure.
- 52:11DANI: Do
- 52:14you know a lot of high school sweethearts?
- 52:14KARA: I
- 52:16know a couple.
- 52:16DANI: Wow. Good for them. Sometimes
- 52:19there's an exception to the rule.
- 52:19KARA: Sometimes there
- 52:21is. Now Daphne is swimming laps at the pool.
- 52:25And Toby says, hey, girl. Hey, sister. What's
- 52:28up? And Daphne tells him about the kitchen and
- 52:30how much it sucks.
- 52:30DANI: And Toby says, that's discrimination.
- 52:34She says, I got demoted to dishwasher. And he's
- 52:37like, well, that's illegal. And she goes, it's
- 52:39not, because he says it's unsafe for me. Like,
- 52:42I'm not safe in the kitchen. And then Toby goes,
- 52:46well, he isn't right, is he?
- 52:46KARA: Why would you ask
- 52:48that?
- 52:48DANI: [GROANS] Toby.
- 52:48KARA: And then Daphne goes on a great rant
- 52:52where she's like, the least he could do is face
- 52:55me. Maybe learn some signs, like the sign for chicken
- 52:58or cook or cut, like it's literally not that hard.
- 53:02Deaf people get pigeonholed. They're underemployed
- 53:05into jobs like janitor or a truck driver, and I'm going
- 53:09to end up being a truck driver.
- 53:09DANI: Yeah. It's like,
- 53:11no, you're not, queen.
- 53:11KARA: Right.
- 53:11DANI: We've seen her
- 53:14get in, like, two car accidents.
- 53:14KARA: Right. You're
- 53:16going to be an awful truck driver.
- 53:16DANI: You're not
- 53:17going to be a truck driver.
- 53:17KARA: Also, you can't hear
- 53:19the radio, girl.
- 53:19DANI: Is the radio an important part
- 53:22of truck driving?
- 53:22KARA: I feel like it is.
- 53:22DANI: I have honestly
- 53:25no clue.
- 53:25KARA: I don't know. I wrote down some—
- 53:25DANI: I just
- 53:28feel like it would suck to be a Deaf truck driver
- 53:29because you couldn't even listen to podcasts
- 53:31while you're driving.
- 53:31KARA: Can't listen to music.
- 53:33Can't listen to Dished at Birth.
- 53:33DANI: Oh, my God.
- 53:33KARA: What
- 53:36would you do?
- 53:36DANI: That's awful.
- 53:36KARA: I know. I wrote down
- 53:38some statistics, though.
- 53:38DANI: Okay.
- 53:38KARA: According to the
- 53:41National Deaf Center, 57.7% of Deaf adults
- 53:44in America are employed compared to 72% of hearing
- 53:48adults. Many Deaf people are underemployed. And
- 53:52by that, I mean they end up in jobs below their
- 53:54skill or education level due to perceived communication
- 53:57barriers. So, yeah, very true life.
- 53:57DANI: Yeah.
- 53:57KARA: But
- 54:01Toby then says, but you're not like other girls.
- 54:04You're different. And also because you're rich
- 54:06and privileged. Don't forget that.
- 54:06DANI: Don't forget
- 54:08about that. That's new to her.
- 54:08KARA: Yeah.
- 54:08DANI: She doesn't
- 54:11know yet that she can take advantage of that
- 54:14system.
- 54:14KARA: And Kathryn's going to because the
- 54:15very next scene, we're at the restaurant.
- 54:15DANI: Yes.
- 54:18KARA: And Kathryn—
- 54:18DANI: Kathryn storms in. She's ready
- 54:20to Karen out.
- 54:20KARA: I guess Toby—
- 54:20DANI: She's like, let
- 54:21me speak to the manager. Yeah. Toby tells her.
- 54:24KARA: Toby told her off screen. She comes in and she
- 54:26goes, I can't believe. This is her sense of justice.
- 54:29You know, like, he can't do that. He can't discriminate.
- 54:32You know, like with Justina, they were like,
- 54:35they can't fire you.
- 54:35DANI: Exactly. Yes. She has a
- 54:37strong sense of justice.
- 54:37KARA: Yeah. And Daphne says
- 54:42he can actually because I'm considered unsafe.
- 54:45This girl needs to talk to NAD, like the National
- 54:47Association of the Deaf. The National Association
- 54:50of the Deaf has a law and advocacy center that
- 54:52provides free counseling support. Okay?
- 54:52DANI: Shout
- 54:56out.
- 54:56KARA: And then Kathryn's like, well, what if
- 54:58I hire an interpreter? And Daphne, I understandably
- 55:01get it. It's like, it's too crowded in there.
- 55:03It's just going to get in the way.
- 55:03DANI: Also, she
- 55:05doesn't really need an interpreter.
- 55:05KARA: She just
- 55:08needs him to face her.
- 55:08DANI: She just needs him to
- 55:11very clearly explain what — just use the word
- 55:15green bean, you fucking prick.
- 55:15KARA: I know.
- 55:15DANI: Yeah,
- 55:19she doesn't need an interpreter to interpret
- 55:21behind when someone's behind.
- 55:21KARA: No.
- 55:21DANI: But she gets
- 55:24it together. She puts the mirror up. It's just
- 55:26she shouldn't have to.
- 55:26KARA: No. But Kathryn's like,
- 55:29let me talk to Chef Jeff. And Kathryn's like,
- 55:31not Kathryn. Daphne's like, get out.
- 55:31DANI: Yeah.
- 55:34KARA: Please leave.
- 55:34DANI: And Chef Jeff comes out and is
- 55:36like, do we have a problem? And Daphne's like,
- 55:38no. No. And then you can kind of see Jeff, like,
- 55:42earn a little glimmer of respect for her in that
- 55:45moment, I guess.
- 55:45KARA: How so?
- 55:45DANI: I mean, not in a good
- 55:48way.
- 55:48KARA: Because she wasn't telling Mommy.
- 55:48DANI: Yes, exactly.
- 55:51Because he comes out being like, so she told
- 55:53Mommy. And then realizes.
- 55:53KARA: Oh, she didn't tell
- 55:56Mommy.
- 55:56DANI: She didn't tell Mommy. Right. So. Yeah.
- 56:00KARA: Now we're at Patrick's apartment. And he and
- 56:03Regina are getting ready to fuck. She's taking
- 56:06off the wrist brace.
- 56:06DANI: We do not need to be seeing
- 56:08this. I know. Like, why is he sensually unbuttoning
- 56:12his shirt? Okay, we already have the hottest
- 56:15man alive, the actor playing Angelo.
- 56:15KARA: Sure.
- 56:15DANI: We
- 56:18don't need to see this, like, sad, white bread
- 56:21man. He's so blah, nothing, whatever. And then,
- 56:24like, Regina is, like, pulling off her shoes.
- 56:28And he's like, oh, you're quick to it tonight
- 56:30or something. Like, it's so gross.
- 56:30KARA: I know.
- 56:30DANI: It's
- 56:32making my skin crawl. She was, like sliding
- 56:35her wrist brace.
- 56:35KARA: He's like, wow, really getting sexy
- 56:38tonight.
- 56:38DANI: I don't want to shame. And we didn't
- 56:40see. And maybe it happened off screen. But I
- 56:42feel like Patrick is being given, like, a boyfriend
- 56:45arc, but then we only ever see them meeting up
- 56:48to fuck at his apartment. And she never is, like,
- 56:51staying for breakfast.
- 56:51KARA: Or eating ice cream.
- 56:51DANI: Yeah,
- 56:52I guess that one time they were getting ice cream
- 56:54and, like, he showed up to Daphne's game. But,
- 56:56like, we don't see them out at meals together
- 56:58or, like, at her place, like, hanging around.
- 57:02It's literally just her pulling up to, like,
- 57:05booty call and then leave.
- 57:05KARA: Which is surprising
- 57:07because Patrick then turns to her and he's like,
- 57:09you rock and I want to be with you forever.
- 57:09DANI: I
- 57:11don't know.
- 57:11KARA: And Regina's like, oh, okay. Thanks.
- 57:15DANI: But I don't want to marry you.
- 57:15KARA: Yeah. Bay, after
- 57:18leaving Alex and breaking up with him, is sitting
- 57:21outside on top of the hood of The Thing. And
- 57:24Emmett pulls up.
- 57:24DANI: It's at their, like, makeout
- 57:26spot that you were talking about. How they have
- 57:28that spot off the road.
- 57:28KARA: A random spot at night
- 57:31in front of, like, some telephone wires.
- 57:31DANI: And
- 57:33she's chilling there. Clearly she asked him to
- 57:35meet up.
- 57:35KARA: And yeah, he, and then he takes off
- 57:38his helmet. He's like, oh my God, I'm so happy
- 57:40to see you.
- 57:40DANI: Yeah.
- 57:40KARA: This is amazing.
- 57:40DANI: He literally
- 57:42thinks that they're like going to get back together
- 57:45right now.
- 57:45KARA: Yeah.
- 57:45DANI: He's literally like, hey girl.
- 57:47KARA: SimCom Alert.
- 57:47DANI: Miss you.
- 57:47KARA: Yeah.
- 57:47DANI: Yeah. But I,
- 57:50not to say this is a justified one, but I, Vanessa
- 57:54Marano is doing such good vocal acting, yelling.
- 57:57And so I do think part of it is like, well, that's
- 57:59not her native language and she can't act as
- 58:01well in just sign language. And she's so mad.
- 58:01KARA: She's
- 58:05so mad. And she's also been very rusty. She hasn't
- 58:08signed all summer. So I get it.
- 58:08DANI: Well, that wouldn't
- 58:10have mattered. But sure, we'll give it to her.
- 58:13We'll give it to her.
- 58:13KARA: Yeah. But she's like, hey,
- 58:15Emmett, by the way, you ruined everything.
- 58:15DANI: Yeah.
- 58:18KARA: You suck. I have trust issues now, thanks to
- 58:21you.
- 58:21DANI: Yeah. This is so 16—year—old to be like,
- 58:24how am I supposed to ever be with anyone else
- 58:27ever again when you do sweet things like put
- 58:30mediocre graffiti up on the side of a warehouse,
- 58:33inaccurately stating the dates of our relationship?
- 58:36KARA: And then Emmett's like, but we're meant to be.
- 58:39He does apologize.
- 58:39DANI: Yeah, he apologizes a lot.
- 58:42And he's like, but we're meant to be. But let's
- 58:43remember, he sucked as a boyfriend.
- 58:43KARA: He sucked
- 58:46and I wish she said this.
- 58:46DANI: Yeah it wasn't just—
- 58:50and she kind of is like so you fucked someone
- 58:52else while I was talking to your parents about
- 58:53how to help you.
- 58:53KARA: Yeah.
- 58:53DANI: And because you were mad
- 58:56at me for doing that. And it's like not just—
- 58:56KARA: I'm
- 58:58glad she had that.
- 58:58DANI: He was such a fucking baby for months
- 59:00and months and months. He was such a moody brat.
- 59:02KARA: I know.
- 59:02DANI: He was not a good boyfriend to you.
- 59:02KARA: She
- 59:05should have done another timeline. I would like
- 59:07it in—between. Emmett yelled at me here. Emmett yelled
- 59:09at me here. Emmett ignored me here.
- 59:09DANI: I hope she does
- 59:11that.
- 59:11KARA: That would be amazing.
- 59:11DANI: Anyway, she is screaming
- 59:16at him, just being like, you've ruined everything.
- 59:19And then Emmett's basically just like, I'll wait
- 59:22for you.
- 59:22KARA: And Bay goes, bye, and drives away.
- 59:25DANI: Yeah, Bay goes, all right. She leaves. So then
- 59:27Daphne's back at the guest house, and Kathryn
- 59:32comes and finds her.
- 59:32KARA: What time do you think she
- 59:34gets off work?
- 59:34DANI: 7, 8? Does that make sense?
- 59:38KARA: No.
- 59:38DANI: 9, 10, 11, 12?
- 59:38KARA: I was thinking like 11 or
- 59:4212. That's crazy. Girl needs some sleep. But
- 59:45Daphne's doing homework and Kathryn comes in.
- 59:47And Daphne says, thanks for coming to my work.
- 59:50But I've been through this. Story of my life.
- 59:52I can handle it on my own. And Kathryn starts
- 59:54crying.
- 59:54DANI: It's nice. They're both like trying to
- 59:57apologize to each other.
- 59:57KARA: Yeah. She was like,
- 1:00:00I've only been your mom for a few months.
- 1:00:00DANI: Yeah.
- 1:00:02KARA: It's been over a year, but okay.
- 1:00:02DANI: According to
- 1:00:04their own timeline. Again.
- 1:00:04KARA: Yeah. And I want to
- 1:00:08protect you. And then I was just like, Daphne,
- 1:00:11it's not a failure on your part to get your mom
- 1:00:14involved or like the general manager of the restaurant.
- 1:00:17DANI: It's just like a tough situation. I mean, she's
- 1:00:21a fictional character, but I want to respect
- 1:00:23her autonomy in theory.
- 1:00:23KARA: Yeah, sure.
- 1:00:23DANI: It's like,
- 1:00:25yeah, girl.
- 1:00:25KARA: I just want her to say that's not
- 1:00:27my job. Like when she says I'll go back to work
- 1:00:30and create a system that works for me. I was
- 1:00:32like, that's not your job.
- 1:00:32DANI: Yeah.
- 1:00:32KARA: So this job
- 1:00:34is so hard because I don't really have like an
- 1:00:36HR.
- 1:00:36DANI: No. God, if there was HR in that kitchen,
- 1:00:39a lot of things would be going different.
- 1:00:39KARA: I know.
- 1:00:41DANI: But yeah. And she says, Kathryn says, like,
- 1:00:44I'm sorry, I should have talked to Regina first.
- 1:00:46And Daphne is basically like, Regina only knows
- 1:00:50how to do this because she's fucking blown everything
- 1:00:54up so many times and like pissed me off in the
- 1:00:58process so many times. So it's clear that it's
- 1:01:01a step. Daphne needs to do things for herself
- 1:01:04at her own pace.
- 1:01:04KARA: Yeah. And also because historically,
- 1:01:08her mom has kind of ruined everything.
- 1:01:08DANI: That too.
- 1:01:11KARA: But Daphne does go back to the kitchen the next
- 1:01:13day and she put up a mirror, like this wide convex
- 1:01:16mirror, so that she can see the blind spots.
- 1:01:18DANI: And she's washing dishes and she's doing it in
- 1:01:21a way where you can tell she's like, I'm going
- 1:01:22to be the best damn dishwasher this kitchen's
- 1:01:24ever seen.
- 1:01:24KARA: You know what? Go for it.
- 1:01:24DANI: Go for it,
- 1:01:27girl.
- 1:01:27KARA: And Chef Jeff sees the mirror. He's like,
- 1:01:29huh, okay. And then she asks, is that alright?
- 1:01:32And he goes, yeah, it's fine.
- 1:01:32DANI: And then there's
- 1:01:35like a moment between them.
- 1:01:35KARA: I know.
- 1:01:35DANI: Ugh. Gross.
- 1:01:35KARA: Now,
- 1:01:40Bay's in her bedroom. The Galapagos era is
- 1:01:42done.
- 1:01:42DANI: Done. She takes the feather out.
- 1:01:42KARA: The feather's
- 1:01:46gone.
- 1:01:46DANI: Is maybe just a clip—in? It's unclear.
- 1:01:48KARA: It looks like a clip—in.
- 1:01:48DANI: It looks like a clip
- 1:01:50—in. It's not even like tied into her hair.
- 1:01:50KARA: I
- 1:01:52know. Regina comes in and goes, so Daphne told
- 1:01:55me what happened with Emmett. So sorry about
- 1:01:57that. That sucks.
- 1:01:57DANI: She's also like, we haven't
- 1:02:00really had a chance to talk since you got back.
- 1:02:03And it's like, girl.
- 1:02:03KARA: And whose fault is that?
- 1:02:04DANI: Whose fucking fault is that, Regina? Stop going
- 1:02:07over to Patrick's.
- 1:02:07KARA: With your stupid wristband.
- 1:02:10DANI: And the wrist brace is really sending me.
- 1:02:10KARA: I know.
- 1:02:14But Bay's like, it's all right. Thanks for helping
- 1:02:16with Angelo's case. I'm really excited for him
- 1:02:19to stay here.
- 1:02:19DANI: Yeah.
- 1:02:19KARA: Cut to the hearing.
- 1:02:19DANI: She's
- 1:02:21like, it's all going to be OK because Angelo
- 1:02:23is going to stay. Girl.
- 1:02:23KARA: There's an interpreter
- 1:02:26for Daphne.
- 1:02:26DANI: Yeah. Wow.
- 1:02:26KARA: Reasonable accommodation,
- 1:02:29guys. So the judge has finished reading the letters
- 1:02:32about how Angelo leaving would be an undue hardship.
- 1:02:34And the judge is like, I don't believe that for
- 1:02:36a second. You have not been in their lives for
- 1:02:3813 years. They don't give a fuck about you.
- 1:02:38DANI: [WHISPERS] And
- 1:02:40she kind of has a point.
- 1:02:40KARA: [WHISPERS] I know. They're fine without
- 1:02:44you. They have many other parents. You have never
- 1:02:47showed up for them. Not to mention you've overstayed
- 1:02:49your visa. All right.
- 1:02:49DANI: She's like, listen, you're
- 1:02:53kind of a criminal.
- 1:02:53KARA: I don't want you here. And
- 1:02:55in fact, you're going to go back to Italy within
- 1:02:5748 hours. Bay starts sobbing.
- 1:02:57DANI: Yeah, runs out.
- 1:03:01And she is wearing to court a chunky brown statement
- 1:03:04belt. So there's that.
- 1:03:04KARA: Yeah. Regina runs to comfort
- 1:03:08her and then turns around and runs right back
- 1:03:11into the courthouse.
- 1:03:11DANI: Runs right back into the
- 1:03:13courthouse. Cut to next scene.
- 1:03:13KARA: Marries him.
- 1:03:13DANI: Her
- 1:03:17and Angelo are standing with the most awkward
- 1:03:21looking officiant I've ever seen under like a
- 1:03:24really sad little archway — like.
- 1:03:24KARA: It's like a
- 1:03:27steel canopy. It's very strange.
- 1:03:27DANI: It's very sterile
- 1:03:31and that's how it ends. I know that realism
- 1:03:33sort of like isn't a factor here, but let's talk
- 1:03:36about how is them getting married and then applying
- 1:03:40for a green card after he's already legally been
- 1:03:42ordered to leave the country going to fix anything?
- 1:03:45KARA: Okay. As someone who has a wife with a green card.
- 1:03:49DANI: Yes.
- 1:03:49KARA: This is not a get out of jail free card.
- 1:03:52In real life, he would be deported as scheduled.
- 1:03:54DANI: Yeah. And then he would have to fight his way
- 1:03:56legally through the system to get back in, wouldn't
- 1:03:59he?
- 1:03:59KARA: Yes.
- 1:03:59DANI: And it would still take years and work
- 1:04:02against him that he'd already been deported once.
- 1:04:05KARA: Yeah. They don't live together. They have no
- 1:04:07proof they've been together recently. It seems
- 1:04:09like he came to the U.S. legally, but he overstayed
- 1:04:11his visa by many years. Getting married does
- 1:04:13not stop ICE from deporting you.
- 1:04:13DANI: And especially
- 1:04:16to be like, if you get married and then your
- 1:04:18spouse needs a green card, as you've been through,
- 1:04:20we've talked about this, you have to go through
- 1:04:22an extensive interview process to prove that
- 1:04:25you are not married solely for a green card.
- 1:04:28KARA: So yeah, USCIS, which is like Immigration and
- 1:04:31Customs Services, they're going to immediately
- 1:04:34see that he had removal proceedings and got married
- 1:04:37that same day. And they're going to be like,
- 1:04:40well, obviously this is a sham. They don't live
- 1:04:42together. They don't have any share of living
- 1:04:44expenses.
- 1:04:44DANI: No.
- 1:04:44KARA: And he lived in, what, Chicago
- 1:04:48beforehand? I understand this is for the plot,
- 1:04:51but this would never, ever work.
- 1:04:51DANI: No, it would
- 1:04:55fix nothing. Stupid, I hate all the relationship
- 1:04:57plot points at this point in the season.
- 1:04:57KARA: I'm
- 1:04:59so sick of them together.
- 1:04:59DANI: I actually don't. I
- 1:05:03want Angelo back in the show because he's so
- 1:05:05pretty to look at and so chaotic. And I want
- 1:05:07Patrick gone. Which will happen. We're going
- 1:05:10to get Patrick gone. Don't worry. I just feel
- 1:05:13like the best thing for Angelo would be to go
- 1:05:15back to Italy and just chill for a little while
- 1:05:17and then just have Bay come visit him.
- 1:05:17KARA: It'd be
- 1:05:21extremely hard for him to come back to the U.S.
- 1:05:23DANI: No, I'm telling him not to come back to the
- 1:05:24U.S. for a while. I'm saying go chill in Italy.
- 1:05:27KARA: And like, can't Bay, with all of her money, fly
- 1:05:29and go visit him?
- 1:05:29DANI: Right, and he was telling Bay
- 1:05:31about all of his extended family.
- 1:05:31KARA: Yeah, like,
- 1:05:34I'm Arab, cool. Yeah, I remember.
- 1:05:34DANI: Yeah. Remember
- 1:05:37when he was like, I'll bring you to Italy this
- 1:05:39summer and we'll, like, go meet everyone.
- 1:05:39KARA: I know.
- 1:05:42DANI: So it's like, go there.
- 1:05:42KARA: Yeah. Also, yeah, he's
- 1:05:46not in trouble anymore in Italy. They said it's
- 1:05:49a fine.
- 1:05:49DANI: They cleared that up and he paid it.
- 1:05:50So, like, he's good. He's good to go.
- 1:05:50KARA: But he
- 1:05:54has two daughters here that he just—
- 1:05:54DANI: He doesn't
- 1:05:56give a fuck about them!
- 1:05:56KARA: He doesn't. He cares
- 1:05:58about Regina.
- 1:05:58DANI: He just cares about Regina.
- 1:05:58KARA: This
- 1:06:02plot line is so stupid.
- 1:06:02DANI: I feel like if he went
- 1:06:04to Italy and he was like, Bay, come and visit
- 1:06:06me for a week every winter and summer and Regina
- 1:06:11can bring you, he could romance Regina in Italy
- 1:06:14back into being in love with him. And then they
- 1:06:16could be there.
- 1:06:16KARA: My God. I honestly could see
- 1:06:19Regina moving to Italy to be with him.
- 1:06:19DANI: Absolutely.
- 1:06:21No, she absolutely would. She's obsessed with
- 1:06:23him.
- 1:06:23KARA: Yeah.
- 1:06:23DANI: And they could be happy there. And
- 1:06:25then Daphne can go to cooking school out there.
- 1:06:27You guys, it's — I'll try to get back in there.
- 1:06:31Let me fix this.
- 1:06:31KARA: Let me rewrite this.
- 1:06:31DANI: And then
- 1:06:34that'll save Angelo from his later fate.
- 1:06:34KARA: Yeah.
- 1:06:37So much to come. Much to come for the rest of
- 1:06:40the season.
- 1:06:40DANI: Much, much to discuss. Thanks for
- 1:06:43listening, guys.
- 1:06:43KARA: Thank you for listening. And
- 1:06:46we'll be back next week.
- 1:06:46DANI: We'll be back next week.
- 1:06:48BOTH: Bye! [UPBEAT JAZZY THEME MUSIC]
