Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We got a team naming last night.
- 0:01Speaker 2: This is for the series decided.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Well, the South Africa League decided really in the greatest
- 0:05Speaker 1: rivalry tour between the All Blacks and South Africa. The
- 0:08Speaker 1: hooker Asafo Amor will start. Scrum seems to be sorted
- 0:13Speaker 1: out according to the box.
- 0:14Speaker 2: So yeah, I spoke to Coach Stan after the training
- 0:17Speaker 2: session and I asked him, Coach, if you ask me
- 0:19Speaker 2: anything about the scrums. And he said, just answer. We
- 0:23Speaker 2: sorted it out yesterday. So yeah, that's it.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Joining us this morning is Sean Fitzpatrick, former All Black
- 0:29Speaker 1: captain in Johannesburg. Sean, nice to have you back. How
- 0:32Speaker 1: are you going?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Very good, thanks, Rowan. It's nice to be back in
- 0:37Speaker 2: Joburg after a wonderful week down in Cape Town.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to ask, because I'm really enjoying our chat,
- 0:42Speaker 1: so we've been talking almost every week. How's it going there?
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's been good. We sort of, you know, obviously everyone
- 0:51Speaker 2: was pretty excited after... the win at Alice Park and then,
- 0:55Speaker 2: then we headed down and enjoyed the delights of, of
- 0:58Speaker 2: Cape Town and, um, and then, you know, coming up against,
- 1:03Speaker 2: as we knew, a very, you know, motivated South African
- 1:07Speaker 2: team who, who played really well in that first sort
- 1:09Speaker 2: of 20, 30 minutes and then we sort of seemed
- 1:12Speaker 2: to be chasing the game a bit but, uh, we
- 1:14Speaker 2: knew exactly what they were going to do, didn't we? And, uh,
- 1:17Speaker 2: And they deliver. What are you actually doing there?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Are you just following around? Are you hanging around like
- 1:22Speaker 1: a bad smell fitter?
- 1:28Speaker 2: There's a number of us here at the moment as
- 1:30Speaker 2: ambassadors for New Zealand rugby and helping New Zealand rugby
- 1:35Speaker 2: support their sponsors and You know, we just had three
- 1:38Speaker 2: or four days in the bush with a number of
- 1:42Speaker 2: the supporters groups, which was fantastic. But, yeah, it's just, Brian,
- 1:47Speaker 2: it's a really nice atmosphere here. Everyone is, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: like this number of New Zealanders here is phenomenal. There's
- 1:54Speaker 2: over 2,000, they're sort of saying, which is just great.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Everyone's having a great time, being well looked after by
- 2:02Speaker 2: the South Africans, and just it's a really nice feel.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Have you been thinking about 1996 much?
- 2:07Speaker 2: I sort of get asked about it most days. But, yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I think it's really sort of, I think we spoke
- 2:18Speaker 2: about it last week, it's sort of, it's really moved on,
- 2:21Speaker 2: I think, in terms of the way they consume sort
- 2:23Speaker 2: of rugby now. They're absolutely bonkers on it in terms of,
- 2:28Speaker 2: you know, the masses that are watching rugby now. The
- 2:31Speaker 2: fan zones, you know, especially in Cape Town, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: the stadium is a really good part of town. So
- 2:39Speaker 2: there was a lot going on around the stadium. We're
- 2:41Speaker 2: at Alice Park. It's sort of you've got to get
- 2:42Speaker 2: into the stadium and then you go home, basically. But
- 2:46Speaker 2: in Cape Town, it was a real festive feel about it. And,
- 2:51Speaker 2: you know, there's a lot. I know you're going to ask,
- 2:54Speaker 2: but everyone's turned into an aviation expert here in terms
- 3:00Speaker 2: of the flyover, which has now been cancelled for this week.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I saw that. Honestly, we've heard more about South African
- 3:09Speaker 1: aviation rules than we have rugby rules in.
- 3:11Speaker 2: The last week.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Hey, let's talk the team. So, Lakai, Dari and Almoa.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they've looked at it and they've thought,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know, a lot of these guys had a lot
- 3:24Speaker 2: of rugby. You know, Cody's had a lot of rugby.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You know, we've still got another two tests to go.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So let's freshen it up a bit. I think probably
- 3:35Speaker 2: just speaking to a few of the guys that, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: the key for us, which we haven't done in either
- 3:40Speaker 2: of the test matches, is we haven't started well. So
- 3:44Speaker 2: we've got to make sure that we start well. We
- 3:47Speaker 2: need to make sure our set piece is solid. I
- 3:50Speaker 2: think we sort of sorted out the scrum, I think,
- 3:52Speaker 2: in general. Our line-out was disappointing last week, and everyone
- 3:56Speaker 2: said that. So bringing in Sam Darian, who's a really
- 3:59Speaker 2: smart rugby player. He's had a great year, super rugby.
- 4:02Speaker 2: He's played well when he's been asked to for the
- 4:04Speaker 2: All Blacks. And they're just giving Josh Lord, I think,
- 4:07Speaker 2: another week off. They just didn't feel he was quite
- 4:10Speaker 2: ready from his concussion, and the same with De Groot. But, yeah,
- 4:16Speaker 2: I think it's pretty bold, sort of some bold calls there. But,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you know, I sort of like what I see. They've
- 4:23Speaker 2: kept that sort of spine there, sort of 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,
- 4:27Speaker 2: has played all the test matches.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And on the plus side, there's brilliant moments and there's
- 4:35Speaker 3: brilliant rugby and we're not collapsing emotionally at the end
- 4:40Speaker 3: of the game.
- 4:40Speaker 1: No, no.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Which is, you know, we've scored, I think, in the
- 4:45Speaker 2: two test matches, and by second halves, we're at 30
- 4:50Speaker 2: points to their six. So we're doing something right. We're
- 4:54Speaker 2: finishing well. We're fit. We just need to, those crucial
- 4:59Speaker 2: moments in the first sort of 20, 25 minutes, we've
- 5:02Speaker 2: got to get those right. You know, we had a
- 5:03Speaker 2: terrible start. They had a textbook, you know, training ground
- 5:10Speaker 2: plan that they scored that first try in the first
- 5:12Speaker 2: sort of three minutes, which, you know, sort of set
- 5:14Speaker 2: us back a bit. But, you know, we're in the fight.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And as I said to you sort of off air,
- 5:19Speaker 2: this is great preparation for next year. You know, if
- 5:22Speaker 2: you'd come away saying that we won all after Cape Town,
- 5:27Speaker 2: everyone would have gone, that's pretty good. You know, we're
- 5:29Speaker 2: playing the world champions, their background, and we're one all
- 5:32Speaker 2: going to the third test. So, you know, it's all
- 5:36Speaker 2: on for this week. It's a great, great feel here.
- 5:38Speaker 1: It certainly is. Hopefully a great feeling after Sunday morning,
- 5:40Speaker 1: our time too. Sean Fitzpatrick with us live from Johannesburg.
