- 1:47our everybody we all had a good night sleep too. We also want to
- 1:49thank the Beaman Hotel. You're in Dallas, yes, which which by the
- 1:57way, is the last year was voted the top staycation hotel in Dallas.
- 2:02Soa Dallas and you want to staycation, book your room at the Beaman.
- 2:07Okay, but yes, indeed, I am from I am from Dallas,
- 2:12and it is so excited to be here. I was born in Dallas,
- 2:14raised in Plano, and it is so it who counts, I mean,
- 2:19it's gotten bigger and bigger. Well, you know, when I when I
- 2:21lived here, it was it was north. Now it's central Dallas basically,
- 2:24so yeah, it's changed, it's changed quite a bit. So yeah,
- 2:29and We're excited today because guess what, we're giving our first mom Dallas Mom
- 2:34of the Year Award. This is our first Mom of the Year award.
- 2:36We're going around the country and in each city we're selecting a mom and honoring
- 2:40her with a beautiful award. And we that we did a show in Dallas
- 2:46in Austin that was live and we did not give a Mom of the Year
- 2:49award. Everyone is I feel like a fight would break out over who would
- 2:52get that. Well, that was a problem because we kind of were arguing.
- 2:55You thought it was you, I thought it was me. Yeah,
- 3:00and then you know what, Jennifer Well and Jennifer you know quietly, I'll
- 3:04tell you what. You know the truth. The truth is when Jennifer threw
- 3:07her name and I was like I might not win this, I'm like,
- 3:09we're out. Yeah. So yeah, so disqualified ourselves. Well I disqualified
- 3:14myself sadly two weeks ago when I was here for s m U Mom's Weekend.
- 3:17That'll do it. Well, it did do it. I had my
- 3:22first hangover in since law school. Uh uh huh. And that's and and
- 3:27I think that was when Lincoln was president maybe, so it was really it
- 3:31was really, I mean I was. I felt awful because I've told my
- 3:35son for all of college, don't drink. Stop drinking. You know,
- 3:38everybody, no, no drinking to humble myself the day after and asked him
- 3:43for advice on how Monica I am how to cure a hangover. I mean
- 3:46that was kind of I'm sure he said hair of the Dog Mom. No
- 3:51he didn't, but another mom did. Actually, because we were all part
- 3:54of the club she's trying. Yeah, we were kind of helping to each
- 3:57other. Yeah, actually so, and then we didn't help ourselves. You
- 4:00and I disqualified ourselves. Oh yeah. We had the chance to go to
- 4:04the Country Music Television Awards two years in a row, and it's been a
- 4:09blast. This is where I learned to jelly roll Is had no idea,
- 4:13but he's a really fun like he preached. He's saying, I mean it
- 4:16was awesome. It was awesome. The show was awesome. I mean,
- 4:19it's what happened after that was awesome about we did. Okay, be honest,
- 4:25if your if your daughter did what we did, you would be You'd
- 4:28be bay. I would be very upset if my daughter did what I did.
- 4:30So let me be what we did is after the show. We were
- 4:34looking for an uber and we we were looking. It was a big crowd,
- 4:40and out of the blue, Julie says, hey, let's take that
- 4:42taxi cab over there. Okay, And it was a little sketchy, but
- 4:45it was only a mile. It was a mile, rod Yeah, but
- 4:48what the vehicle was a white, unmarked minivan with a green light on top.
- 4:54I'm pretty sure I think you could order it on Amazon. Say,
- 4:57I'm going to make some money tonight. D Yeah. So anyway, we
- 5:00made it through a lot of prayer on my part, I believe, and
- 5:03when we got there traumatic it's got to know it read it's okay, it
- 5:06was true, we got there. But anyway, he charges thirty five dollars
- 5:10after trying to gouge us, and Jennifer was only with cash but it was
- 5:14in her car. Yeah, and she comes out with thirty five one dollar
- 5:17bills. Wow, she hands the guy. That's a whole different show.
- 5:20I don't know what to say about that. Sure, what that's all about,
- 5:25I know, I don't know. But we had a good time.
- 5:27But I did call Monica about a week ago, maybe ten days ago,
- 5:30and I was all passionate about the fact that was very upset over the Golden
- 5:34Bachelor, and I don't know why except for the fact they were married for
- 5:39ninety days, and I was like, how is this possible? Still a
- 5:43complete head scratcher to me? I don't know, but I need someone to
- 5:46explain reality TV to me. I need I need someone to give me the
- 5:50details. Okay, I knew, I know you're upset about that. I
- 5:53was. I mean I even think she bought him a wedding gift. I
- 5:55mean, she was that into their marriage. And this, I mean,
- 5:58I know that people get invested in the sure and you were deeply invested.
- 6:03Hope is ripped from me. Well, I know, and so we're gonna
- 6:06so you know what we are going to lucky you. Oh boy, we
- 6:10have an expert on this topic. God here. Today. She is featured
- 6:15in the Netflix hit series Buying Beverly Hills. She's actually a very successful real
- 6:21estate agent and a managing partner the agency, which is the the real estate
- 6:27agency that the show is surrounds around. After after college, she started her
- 6:33own marketing and PR firm. Says she's been accomplished business person for a very
- 6:38long time. She's the mom of two sons. Please welcome Michelle Schwartz.
- 6:42Welcome to the mom Ye. Hi, so thank you so much for being
- 6:51here and clearing a lot of things up because you see, you see how
- 6:55you see the effect these shows can have on someone like Julie Uyes not quite
- 6:59over the goal was upsetive. Thank you, thank you? Yeah, well,
- 7:02why didn't they talk about where they were living before like getting married?
- 7:05Michelle? You get the tail on the head was really like did you discuss
- 7:11this? Yeah? Do you think that? Yeah? I mean it's like
- 7:15it's like talking about finances before you got married, like she had some light
- 7:18Okay, yeah, Reality TV Monica, Well if yourself. So the first
- 7:23way we start is let's just be let's start with you. Okay, you're
- 7:28depicted a certain way on buying Beverly Hills. It's an edit and okay,
- 7:32well that's what and then you're here in person. So can you share the
- 7:36difference between what we see when we're watching that show and what the real Michelle
- 7:42Schwartz. Yeah, I mean I think this is the perfect room for this
- 7:45answer. Okay, Like, as moms were not always proud of how we
- 7:50speak to our children, how we feel dismissed. They don't listen. We
- 7:56have to yell. So imagine someone's following you around at all of those amazing
- 8:01moments and then they just get to chop it up however they want, right,
- 8:03and so you don't you know, obviously it's not all of me.
- 8:09I think we are all. We all have many sides to us. Not
- 8:13everything is moments that we're proud of. But you know, they're captured,
- 8:18and I think it made for a really good show and they can thank me
- 8:20for a season three later. I mean, so we have so yeah,
- 8:26that's yours hoping. Yeah, well that's right. So that so you're kind
- 8:30of the cliffhanger at the end of the show. Well, not to spoil
- 8:33if you're listening on the podcast and you haven't watched mine, I want to
- 8:35play a pause, watch the show, and then listen to this. I'm
- 8:37about to spill something. Okay, But at the end of the show,
- 8:41you're asking Maritzio, who founded the agents? You need known for a very
- 8:46long time. He's been told that you said his daughters aren't worthy to take
- 8:50it over. So I don't think that's what I said. No again,
- 8:54I'm not putting words in your mouth. No, no, no, that's
- 8:56what they that's that's what that members are led to believe. And he calls
- 9:05you in and he kind of tells you, I'm not sure you're not gonna
- 9:09be the next anyone, but Michelle, Yeah, that's what he's saying.
- 9:13Say that. And then after that he immediately brings in a guy who I
- 9:20was not that impressed with, to be honest with you, through the whole
- 9:22show, like, oh, he's going to be the one. He's like,
- 9:24Oh, I need you. I might not be around a lot.
- 9:26We want you to come. My twelve year old wants to punch him in
- 9:30the face. Yeah, that's what he said. We're not doing that,
- 9:33but yeah, exactly, so I guess what I'm so, what's the there's
- 9:37some misconceptions about women and business, and there's certain stereotypes that I don't know
- 9:41that that's any kind of intentional thing. I don't think they're trying to say,
- 9:45well, men can do things better than women. But what's your feeling
- 9:48about the misconceptions that exist in the business world and how do we fix those?
- 9:54I mean, I would not be sitting here if we could fix them,
- 9:58right, I would be on yacht somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean.
- 10:03So look, let's go back in history, right, Like real estate
- 10:07was always oh, like a stay at home mom's job. Like it was
- 10:09always this ideal you can make your own schedule. I think as time progressed
- 10:15and as things change and prices went up, there are men that saw that
- 10:20there's a lot of money in it. Yeah. Right, And so now
- 10:22you have all these powerhouse men and all of these shows that are on television.
- 10:26Most of them are featuring strong men, so and successful men, and
- 10:30the shows are making them even more successful. There's not many women that you
- 10:33see in that position. I think that I think we can all agree that
- 10:37when a woman is strong and forceful, she's a b word, right,
- 10:41or she's not deserving of it, or she's a complainer. Whereas I think
- 10:46that if you were to put my words in somebody else's mouth that's on the
- 10:50cast, I would not have been kind of dragged through the ring or the
- 10:54way that I was. But I did say those well, there is that
- 10:58Well, in fact, I'm an attorney, and I have to say when
- 11:01they when they flashed back to where you when you said, I didn't say
- 11:07that, and then it's like, oh, she said it that it was
- 11:09amazing, So that was yeah, that that does happen. But the but
- 11:13even we talk to a strong man that you know, that's compared to the
- 11:16woman who's the bee work. The guy that in the end that he sort
- 11:20of picks I mean no offense, but he's a little gospel. He makes
- 11:24ten thousand calls a hearing guy. Well he has a big board where he
- 11:28marks them all off. Yeah, but you have a gold Michelle. I
- 11:31eat to like be like a mentor. That's how this show, you know,
- 11:35started to be a mentor, Like how you came in. And I
- 11:39actually have two daughters that I mean, I want them to be very successful
- 11:43independent. So how are you mentoring these women that you know, I know
- 11:46you have a lot of women that work for you. Well, clearly Mauricio's
- 11:50daughters are not interested in that. We can move on. Yeah no,
- 11:54So you know, I think what was unfortunate is that you got you didn't
- 11:58get to hear all of my apple, and so it kind of made me
- 12:01it appeared like I was coming out of left field and like, but but
- 12:05I really have achieved a lot of success both within the company and like in
- 12:09my life right, So with age comes wisdom, That's all I was saying,
- 12:16and you know it was so I started with Mauricio at the company.
- 12:20We started it together while I was one of the founding agents, and I
- 12:24have had to ask for every step of the way for my growth, right,
- 12:28nothing has been handed to me. So I now run three offices with
- 12:31one hundred and sixty five agents under me. We are the three most profitable.
- 12:41Not to give away like corporate finance information, but we are the most
- 12:43profitable offices for the company. My offices and I make it a point to
- 12:50recruit strong female real arners love it. So you know, I think that's
- 12:54kind of like what my claim, not claim to fame, but like that's
- 12:58what I tout. I love that. I love bringing in more women.
- 13:01A lot of them are moms. I not in a weird way, but
- 13:05like I built my career off my kids, right, Like that's a whole
- 13:07new sphere of influence that I did not have beforehand. Your target market,
- 13:11you're spending time with them, You're in their home, you're doing play dates,
- 13:15you're at the park, you're at the birthdays, and so you know,
- 13:18throw on a little hat and all of a sudden they want to talk
- 13:20to you about real estate. And so that's really kind of how I built
- 13:24my kids. I mean also, like I used to give them my business
- 13:26cards and say go ride a bike. And for every lead you're building a
- 13:31business. We know, they got to know what hard work is. Well,
- 13:35you lead into that because listen, you mentioned you have two kids.
- 13:39Yeah, you have a very busy life. Yeah, I'm sure we all
- 13:41do. Yeah, coffee comes to you in the morning. Your husband's amazing
- 13:45guy. Yeah, how do you I mean, this is a silly question
- 13:48because you can't balance it all. It's not perfect, But how do you
- 13:52do it? Like, you are a very busy woman. So I guess
- 13:54my favorite way of describing it is that I live a life of like playing
- 13:58a game of whack a mole at all moments. You know, you're just
- 14:01constantly putting out fires all the time. Yeah, and so you know,
- 14:05being a high functioning you know add probably I don't know, I'm constantly listening
- 14:11and knowing what's going on in many different like pockets and moments, and so
- 14:16it's really just kind of taking care of what's in front of you when you
- 14:18have it, instead of trying to plan everything out. I'm like, I'm
- 14:22a master procrastinator, Like you know, everything's at the last minute, but
- 14:26you work best. I get I worked fast under pressure like a diamond.
- 14:31Yeah, and being a mom too. So in the show, at one
- 14:35point you're criticized because you suggested that Farah, who wants to be a mother,
- 14:43get married to have children. You say, well, you know,
- 14:46she probably wouldn't be ready to take care of the business because she wants to
- 14:48be a mom, and they know what it's like and right, and so
- 14:52I took it as I know exactly what that's like. There's a difference between
- 14:56you're my target market, you understand all. To be honest, I didn't
- 15:01take anything that you said wrong. I was like, you know, when
- 15:03you're young. When I was twenty in my twenties, I thought, oh,
- 15:05I should run the business. I'm so smart, I'm so good.
- 15:07Why don't they listen to me? And actually they they told me, well,
- 15:11with age comes wisdom and experience. And it wasn't until you're sitting in
- 15:16that seat that you realized, oh, yeah, that's true. True.
- 15:18So you really didn't say anything. They said you were a hypocrite for saying,
- 15:22well, she was your a mom. So I'm not saying you can't
- 15:24do it, and I'm just saying like when you're going through newborns at that
- 15:28time, like it's it's not the ideal I mean ideal moment to start a
- 15:33company. So your kids are ten and twelve old, so in your career
- 15:37twelve and fourteen, twelve and fourteen, so they were little too when you.
- 15:41I got my license when I was pregnant with my first son. Wow,
- 15:45that was when my transition. So I used my maternity leave as minch,
- 15:48do you do a general in the day of the birth. I could
- 15:52see that. Wait a second, So it took me a full year before
- 15:54I could get one deal done. So I had had my son, my
- 15:58older son that I got pregnant a couple months later, and Marisa was like,
- 16:02get these kids out of the way and let's start making money. I
- 16:03was like ten four, got it? So yeah. So then I I
- 16:10then was pregnant and we were transitioning and coming up with the concept of the
- 16:15agency and talking about these like secret meetings, and I was super pregnant with
- 16:22my son, my second son, and they call me and they're like,
- 16:26we're going into a new office right now. I'm like, okay, I'm
- 16:29having contractions, guys. I was that. So our office, our company
- 16:33started on September first, twenty ten. My son was born September eighth.
- 16:38So I was closing my first deal with my best friend, having contractions on
- 16:42the floor of a conference room with Sarah by the way, contractions on the
- 16:48conference room without any furniture. Well, you've taken working at the pressure to
- 16:52a whole different hal you were you were proad pressed so well, and so
- 16:56tell us a little bit about the agency. So is it a Fortune five
- 16:59hundred company? What's the stats? Not pretty big? Okay, Yeah,
- 17:03it's not a pu We're not a pup company, you know, but it's
- 17:04so is it international? We are? We are international, and we're in
- 17:10Oh gosh, now you're asking you stats. We're I believe we're in like
- 17:14eighteen countries. I might be short sighting us a little bit. Yeah,
- 17:18we you know, most of Los Angeles, we cover all like the West
- 17:22coast. We've now branched off into New York, Miami, we have Charlotte,
- 17:26we have Austin, we have Dallas. So yeah, we're really taking
- 17:33over and we're Canada, Mexico, all the above. And Europe. Yeah.
- 17:37Wow, it's doing really well. Yeah, it's a great brand.
- 17:40It's i mean, the brand recognition is out of this world. Oh yeah,
- 17:42well that's that. It's one of the most popular shows on Netflix right
- 17:47now. Yeah, it is. Well. Real Housewives of Beverly Hills also
- 17:48helped. Well, sure that was a walking billboard for our company. That's
- 17:52just like twelve years for those that don't know. So Marizo is married to
- 17:57but currently is strange from Kyle Richards if I've got that all right, because
- 18:02everything day it changes, you know. Kyle Richards in this in this show
- 18:06and buying Beverly Hills did say something interesting. So she's sitting with her daughters
- 18:08and she says, somebody came up to me and said, you know,
- 18:11I like all the characters in your show. And she's like, We're not
- 18:15characters, We're we're real people. Yeah. So, but yes, it's
- 18:18connected back to the Real Housewives. Yeah, so, I mean they did.
- 18:22They did an amazing marketing job. I mean I called murracy almost like
- 18:25the popager, right, he's like the Chris Jenner of real estate marketing.
- 18:30So he's really just parlated and used the the TV platform to make a huge
- 18:36brand name for ourselves. So can we get a teaser? So you're season
- 18:38three? Are you looking at season three? Are you? Yeah? Yeah,
- 18:45yeah, yeah, we won't we won't tell anybody, you know.
- 18:52Well, you know one of our one of my castmates is an agent here
- 18:56at our Dallas office. Oh really yeah, Well her name is Melissa Platt.
- 19:00So if you guys need anyone, and oh, I know I know
- 19:03Melissa on this show. Yeah yeah, so Melissa, she works both in
- 19:07La and Alice. Okay, Okay, So I don't know if we're going
- 19:10to get a season three. I don't know how they're going to edit me.
- 19:12Hopefully, like you know, you get an opportunity to like me next
- 19:15season and you get to see a little more lighthearted side of me and a
- 19:19more positive, supportive person. Then do you get any saying that, Like
- 19:25no, she gets no, say, I just feel like this is I
- 19:33don't think. Okay. So we interviewed someone from the real house Wise of
- 19:37Toronto and she said I was cast as a villain. They literally took a
- 19:41bunch of tests. They looked at me. She even told me during the
- 19:44show we were doing, she said, you know, like Monica, if
- 19:47I were to cast the villain for your show, I'd pick you, and
- 19:48I was like, based on what do I just say that the villain?
- 19:52But she said she was cast that way and she hated it because she said,
- 19:56ever since she can't go in public without some person accosting her telling her
- 20:00how awful she is, has that happened? So it's kind of yeah,
- 20:03I turned off comments. Yeah, it's totally I'm not interesting totally. Yeah.
- 20:07So yeah, yeah, you got kids to protect that, yeah yeah,
- 20:10yeah, yeah, we're adults here Keyboard Warriors. So in season three,
- 20:15the only way you can protect yourself is to be nothing but sweetness and
- 20:18light through the whole thing. Yeah yeah, yeah, well that's true that
- 20:23that might not get you to season four, so you're gonna have to But
- 20:26everybody likes a good redemption. Yeah, you know, it's story if well,
- 20:30I love the powerhouse that you are. You are, yeah, you
- 20:33know anything that you do in creating for women, yeah, I mean I
- 20:37think we needed to have We needed to highlight strong women in real estate and
- 20:41especially within our company because it looks like a boys club from the yeah off
- 20:45the mom's flub, but from the outside. Yeah yeah, yeah, well
- 20:49thank you. So much. We are all very inspired and yes, you
- 20:52are a good example for all women entrepreneurs and all of our our daughters out
- 20:59there, so thanks so much for joining. I would just say, if
- 21:02you want to start a business, you want to do anything, just the
- 21:03best thing to do is to fail, just keep failing because that means you're
- 21:07learning and you're growing. Yeah, that's true. That's true. That's true.
- 21:11That is good. That is great advice. Well, thank you so
- 21:15much, Thank you well. I would also like to take this opportunity I
- 21:19want to thank two of our longtime sponsors that we absolutely love. One of
- 21:23them is Farmhouse Fresh And for those who don't know, Farmhouse Fresh is an
- 21:33award winning natural skincare company and they have they grow fresh botanicals at their farm
- 21:38in McKinney. Julie and I have gotten to visit. It's amazing time I
- 21:44do too. Yes, they have a corporate motto that there they have a
- 21:48rescue for two. They're gonna rescue your complexion and they're rescuing animals in needs,
- 21:52animals that have been abused. That is amazing and we were so impressed
- 21:56by that. They've also been voted among the best spob brands in the country
- 22:03over the years, and EKE magazine just added them to the list of the
- 22:06best businesses are for putting purpose over profit and there's more companies like that and
- 22:11today, in fact, they're founder Shannon McClinton is here and we're just so
- 22:14thrilled that she could be here. Yes, and we also love New Calm
- 22:22that we have had a long time fans of. The fact Julie knows where
- 22:30it not for New Calm, I would not be here because I don't sleep
- 22:33well at all. So New Calm is an app that helps you have better

- 23:37of course be very refreshed if you happen to be in Dallas and you
- 23:40stay at the Beamon Hotel. So we want to throw that in there too.
- 23:44Yeah. Absolutely, So, well, this is the exciting moment.
- 23:48Yeah, we have waited for it. First set out ever Mom's Club Award
- 23:55recipient. I mean, we're going to get to visit with her a little
- 23:57bit before the rand moment where we hander the award, which is very lovely.
- 24:02It's over here. It's actually cast by the same people that create the
- 24:06Oscar Awards. Oh okay, so it is a very nice award, and
- 24:08I'm sure she's gonna put in a place honor. Her daughter will want to
- 24:11polish it every day and everything. Well, I will tell you, okay.
- 24:15She is the great thing about this award. Everybody in Dallas knows her
- 24:19and loves her, and around the country too. Everywhere I go in Dallas,
- 24:22I say her name like I love her. I love her. She
- 24:26really she can run for office, but I wants I don't think she wants
- 24:30to do that. I wouldn't advise it either. But but she's the co
- 24:33host of the kid Cratit Morning Show. She has two podcasts, A Sandwich
- 24:38and Some Lovin and Love Letters to Kelly, which has great relationship advice.
- 24:44Julie has been listening to it a lot. I mean she gives solid,
- 24:51to the point and very valuable. That's yes, that's very valuable. Oh.
- 24:56I forgot to mention. On May thirty first, it will be her
- 25:00thirtieth anniversary of hosting. I mean, it's truly a remarkable career. Well,
- 25:11it's made more even more remarkable. She's only thirty nine. There gotten
- 25:15today. She's really good friends. I understand with Kelly Clarkson, who today
- 25:19is forty two, so who was older than our recipient. Anyway, she's
- 25:26got to get the Mom's Award. You have to be a mom. She's
- 25:27a proud mom of Brooke, Emma, Kelly, who is here today,
- 25:32Cole and Dylan. She's welcome to the Mom's Club yes day. Yeah,
- 25:40please welcome to the Mom's Club. Kelly Reside. It's good. That's my
- 25:57wedding anniversary. Is your anniversary? Celebrate that's her wedding anniversary on my Oh,
- 26:07I'm exciting. It's been the whole hour talking to you. Yeah,
- 26:11I love you need a good I know you don't like the term villain,
- 26:15but you need a good villain on any reality show to make it juicy and
- 26:18entertaining. And I love you. You do a great job. Thank you.
- 26:22I know you get so much heat for it too. Any outspoken woman
- 26:26who has an opinion is going to get backlash, no matter, no matter
- 26:29what. That is true. That is true. Well, there's a little
- 26:33known fact that people don't know about you. Now. You were on the
- 26:36air kid Credit for years. But when Kathy Lee Gifford retired, they were
- 26:41looking for a new co host from I Don't Understand Yes, and you auditioned
- 26:45to be and you co hosted with me. It's just sort of a regious
- 26:48philib it. Yeah. So what was that like? What you two iconic
- 26:53men in different radio and TV? What was what was that like? Well,
- 26:57when they were doing they were casting a real wide net to replace Kathie
- 27:00Lee Gifford, the irreplaceable some would say, Kathie Lee Gifford. And so
- 27:04they decided as part of their search to do a women of Radio Week,
- 27:10and so they you know, radio stations across the country were trying to get
- 27:12the female host or co host or you know, sidekick to be on that
- 27:18women radio week. And my listeners cast enough votes to get me a slot,
- 27:22and I was on the Friday show. And so when I walked into
- 27:26the office that first day, my parents got to go with me to New
- 27:27York and that was really exciting. Emma Kelly's father, we are no longer
- 27:32together, but at that time we were, and he went with me too.
- 27:34And as soon as I walked in and met Gelman, the producer,
- 27:38he was on one side of the desk, and he said, did you
- 27:41bring any flats? And I said, I am wearing flats. And at
- 27:44that moment I knew this is probably not going to be my mom. But
- 27:49yes, Regis is a very well may he rest in peace. Was a
- 27:52very tiny man, and if you can believe it or not, Kelly Ripper
- 27:56was even tinier than Regi's so very delicate piece to get to do morning TV.
- 28:03So but I had a great time. There was a bunch of snapoos
- 28:04they were supposed to send me over, a bunch of you know, stuff
- 28:10to learn about the guests that were going to be on the next day,
- 28:11one of whom was Lorraine Brocco, who was on The Sopranos. And I
- 28:15didn't have HBO, so I had never seen an episode of The Sopranos.
- 28:18Okay, and my packet never arrived. Oh so I just basically said,
- 28:23you know, like, what's it like to be married to Edward James almost
- 28:26I did not know they had just like split up. So that was a
- 28:30little embarrassing. That's a moment, but that's a moment. But the fun
- 28:36part was, you know that ABC Studios is all right there, so my
- 28:40my then I don't know if we were married at the time. Was I
- 28:44married to Freddy at the time? Anyway, casting a director for All my
- 28:48Children was watching and they said we They panned the camera to Freddy in the
- 28:52audience and they said come over as soon as you get off, and they
- 28:55wanted him to audition for a role on All my Children. Oh didn't get
- 28:59it. Yeah, that is so crazy. Yeah, I mean, it's
- 29:02just like it was a crazy weekend, but it was a lot fun.
- 29:03So in theory it could have been today. Now your husband is Alan,
- 29:08yes, so he is in the past. So I had a lovely daughter
- 29:11so instead of live with Kelly and Mark, it would be live with Kelly
- 29:15and Allan, only to be Kelly be spelled different in each possibly. So
- 29:19if you've been offered that at all, if things have gone a little different,
- 29:22would you have ever left kid to work? Absolutely? Oh take that
- 29:30off? Well, yeah, exactly, And I say that happened. Yes,
- 29:34I was offered. At one point I went out to Los Angeles to
- 29:37do a workshop for hosting, because you never know what your career is going
- 29:41to do. And this is many years ago, and at the time a
- 29:45lovely lady named Marky Costello was conducting the workshop and workshop and she said,
- 29:49if you had moved to LA, I'd love to represent you and work with
- 29:52you. And I had to make a really big decision. Do I want
- 29:56to stay in Dallas with my sure thing with the kid cratit morning show?
- 30:00Career was really starting to, you know, take hold here, or do
- 30:03I risk it all and give up everything with no job and moved to LA.
- 30:07So I chose to stay here, but sometimes I wonder what might have
- 30:10been. But it all worked out there. Well, you've certainly done well
- 30:14and the people of Dallas absolutely love you, so you well, I appreciate
- 30:18any good in your career you have had a chance to meet. I don't
- 30:22even know tons and tons and tons of people. Do you have a geek
- 30:26out moment with a celebrity one last week? I probably embarrassed myself. Yes,
- 30:34you know, I have moments where I'm stunned, speechless and it's so
- 30:37embarrassing. In front of Michelle Pfeiffer, I was Anne Harrison Ford for that
- 30:42was what it was called that movie, and I just kept looking at her
- 30:48and telling her how beautiful. She was. So embarrassing. And then I
- 30:53had to interview Reese Witherspoon one time. They actually, you know, sometimes
- 30:57fly you out to Beverly Hills and these press junkets and all. I I
- 31:02just couldn't shut up. Yeah, I just kept talking about She was with
- 31:06Ryan Philippi at the time, and they got married in Charleston, South Carolina.
- 31:08I was in South Carolina, and I know that she just had They're
- 31:15nodding the entire time. It was. Yeah. So I have not mastered
- 31:22the art of interviewing. I'm not really great at it, but I'm just
- 31:26a fan. Like everybody else. You get done speechless. You're like when
- 31:30I say that's going to change that celebrities day nothing. Yeah, yeah I
- 31:34did. It didn't work out for me either. I was just looking.
- 31:37It was Brookshields and I was looking at her jaw line and I was like,
- 31:41I'm yeah, so it was awkward and you know, but anyway we
- 31:45wanted to us to being stared at in silence. Oh I'm sure. Yeah.
- 31:48But well part of the criteria that we've made up for moms, you
- 31:53made it up. No, no, no, no. It was a
- 31:56very selective work. It's very cristeria. And one of them is you're just
- 32:02giving philanthropic person. Kid Cretic had Kids Kids charity and can you tell us
- 32:09a little bit about that, and you've continued with that good work, so
- 32:13please share that. Yes, So kid Cratic was way before I met him.
- 32:17He was married to Carol and they were expecting their first child and the
- 32:22doctors, you know, doing the sonograms and everything said that your baby's going
- 32:25to be born with a twisted femur and would never be able to walk.
- 32:30And so, like any parent would do, you drop down on your knees.
- 32:32If you've never been religious a day in your life, you start praying
- 32:36and making promises to God. And Caroline Kratic was born perfectly healthy, walks
- 32:40straight as a line, and the kids Jesus All and Kids made good on
- 32:50his promise and he started the Kid's Kids charity, which takes children who have
- 32:55chronically they're chronically ill or they have terminal illness, life offering illnesses, and
- 33:00they take the child, their siblings, their parents on an all expenses paid
- 33:05trip to Disney World because a lot of times when you have a sick child
- 33:08in the family, they get one hundred percent of the attention. The siblings
- 33:12are like, they can't help, but they feel for their their sibling,
- 33:15but like, what about me, I'm just in the shadows. So we
- 33:17give everybody you know, a moment in the spotlight on these trips and kid
- 33:22and sadly passed away in twenty thirteen, but his dream was always for the
- 33:25charity to continue, so we're continuing that still eleven years later, in his
- 33:29honor. So it's unbelievable. Yeah, that is that is tremendous. And
- 33:36of course being a mom is the main criteria and you are fill that,
- 33:40you fulfill it. You should probably ask him that Kelly is worthy of well,
- 33:45yeah, yes, that's good. Yes, the fact that she brought
- 33:52her means that she's well worthy, because if I was getting an award,
- 33:54I would probably not invite my son. He might, you know, I
- 33:59might he might stand up like a wedding. Yeah, you might have you
- 34:01know, point out some things that I not that I'm not a great mom,
- 34:05but I mean so, yes, we're thrilled that she's here. But
- 34:07she went from being a single mom to being the mom of four kids.
- 34:13Right. My husband alan three children from his previous marriage, so Emma Kelly
- 34:17was it was just us for about ten years, and so that was quite
- 34:22a big adjustment. When I was a single woman and I was a homeowner,
- 34:27I bought a home with intention of I'm gonna probably if I meet someone
- 34:30to marry them. I need to have room for my husband his possible children,
- 34:37you know, the older you get. And so I bought a house
- 34:38with the intention I'm going to get married and have a man live here with
- 34:43me. And I did that, but unfortunately I didn't realize that my husband
- 34:46was going to have three children and that I was going to have four kids
- 34:49sharing one bathroom upstairs. Oh boy, so we had But you know,
- 34:52I did have that intention, and I think it is important with everything you
- 34:54do to do it with intention. It didn't take over the closet space.
- 34:59Actually, I I bought a huge closet. I mean I thought of everything.
- 35:01I thought, this closet. I need to have it big enough for
- 35:05he and enough space for kids. It wasn't quite enough, so we ended
- 35:09up buying our second home to get well. On your podcast, you're really
- 35:13funny, and you know, I love how you give straight advice, and
- 35:16you give advice really solid, like no girl. You you know you got
- 35:21to walk from that, and you know, we really appreciate that you share
- 35:24that your journey of finding someone and you have non negotiables, which I think
- 35:30you know this age like you know, being thirty nine, that I'm honest
- 35:35about my age too. I just turned fifty seven. Whoo, I'm not
- 35:42a shame of it. I had my daughter. It took a while for
- 35:45me. I went through the infertility struggles that so many face, and I
- 35:49really can, if I really want to, I can transport myself back to
- 35:52that really emotional time. So my heart really breaks for people who struggle with
- 35:55infertility. But I had her. You know, I was six months shy
- 35:59of forty, so you know, I was pretty well established in my career,
- 36:04and I had to make a lot of adjustments, says, you know.
- 36:06Unfortunately my marriage did not work out with her dad, so being a
- 36:08single mom trying to date with a young child, I had to be really
- 36:12creative with that because I didn't want just introducing a parade of men into her
- 36:15life. Not that there was a parade of men. You know, I
- 36:21did okay, Well I think I think you did better than okay. And
- 36:24because of that, we are pleased to present to you, Julie. Yes,
- 36:30let me get that. My assistant. Yeah, we have little fancy
- 36:32gloves to to you, but I guess we don't. Yeah, Dallas the
- 36:37first ever Dallas Mom of the Year Award. Thank you, I mean thank
- 36:46you, thank you. I'm to congratulation. Thank you. You get to
- 36:58give your speech now. Yeah, well you want to think obviously your child's
- 37:02that's kind of important. I was asking my daughter on the way over here.
- 37:06I said, you know, is there anything that I've done to embarrass
- 37:08you as a mom? Is there anything I get right or anything I get
- 37:12wrong? And she it was actually really sweet because she said that she didn't
- 37:16really have any criticisms for me, but she said, honestly, she had
- 37:20it. She thought it had more to do with the fact that she's getting
- 37:22older now, you know, and she's coming out of that that period where
- 37:27aliens take over your teenage daughter's bodies. And so what I've tried to do
- 37:32with them, m kelly the most is have really open lines of communication.
- 37:36I try to let her know that you can tell me anything, and I
- 37:39want you know, if you ask me anything, I'll be as honest as
- 37:43I can be. And you know, I've had some conversations with her sometimes
- 37:45that are pretty difficult, and sometimes I have to tell the truth and it's
- 37:49not always putting me in the best light. But I want her to see
- 37:52that, you know, she can come to me and I'll come to her
- 37:54with anything, and just keep those lines of communication open. And I think
- 37:58that's the most important thing you can do is actually with teenagers, Yeah,
- 38:00and walk side by side exactly. I think I think that pretty much sums
- 38:08up why you are the recipient that well, thank you amazing speech, Thank
- 38:13you so much. Well, I can't believe our time is up. I
- 38:16mean, it's just so hard to believe it's it's I'm kind of sad.
- 38:22Can do a double episode. Could I don't know how Albernez would feel about
- 38:25that. We can go outside and do another episode of this. I want
