- 0:03Well, hello, and welcome to the Daily Ripples podcast.
- 0:07Each day, we take a stone of truth from AA's Daily Reflections.
- 0:12This ripples out to the practical and spiritual application at the intersection of faith and
- 0:17recovery.
- 0:18Well, welcome to today's July 2nd, and our Daily Ripple is titled, The Essentials.
- 0:26The Stone.
- 0:28Growth does not require complexity.
- 0:31It requires honesty, willingness, and openness.
- 0:36These simple qualities shape a strong and steady life.
- 0:40Ripple 1.
- 0:41Practical.
- 0:42Today I will be honest about where I am.
- 0:45I will stay willing to take the next right step, even if it is uncomfortable.
- 0:50I will remain open to learning, even when it challenges me.
- 0:55Ripple 2.
- 0:56Is spiritual.
- 0:57As I come before the Father with honesty, the Holy Spirit begins His work within me.
- 1:03Following Christ, I learn to live with openness and trust.
- 1:06Over time, these simple qualities lead to something deeper,
- 1:10a quiet steadiness and peace that shapes every part of life.
- 1:15Well, if you haven't noticed by now, it's just me, Cristi.
- 1:21So welcome to today's podcast for July 2nd.
- 1:25I can't believe they let me do this by myself.
- 1:29But we're in for a treat today.
- 1:32Woo-hoo!
- 1:33Wait till they hear this one.
- 1:36But I would like to start off by talking about honesty.
- 1:41And being that I'm a 70s girl, I'm going to start with a song by Billy Joel.
- 1:47Hopefully you're familiar with it.
- 1:49And it's titled Honesty.
- 1:52And the chorus reads like this.
- 1:55[Honesty lyrics]
- 1:59[Honesty lyrics]
- 2:02[Honesty lyrics]
- 2:06[Honesty lyrics]
- 2:10Wow.
- 2:11Number one, I love that song.
- 2:12I have always loved that song.
- 2:15But it speaks truth.
- 2:17In the world today, honesty is not something that comes by easily.
- 2:25Not everybody has it.
- 2:28Not everyone exudes it.
- 2:30Not everyone holds it dear.
- 2:33So when you can find someone that is honest with you, as my bestie and I call it, butt-ugly honest, it is a treasure.
- 2:44as a woman, you want to know from another woman or girlfriend, someone that you can trust,
- 2:52that if you say, do I look fat in this dress, that they will be honest with you because you
- 2:57don't want to go out there looking crazy. Now, if you ask your husband or boyfriend,
- 3:02you may not want to know the truth. You may want them to go, no, you look fabulous.
- 3:09But for the most part, in a relationship and anything that you value and hold dear, you want
- 3:18honesty. And it's not anything that should be complex. It should be something that is simple.
- 3:25It should come without any thought, any prompting, anything that requires, you know, heavy lifting.
- 3:34It should just come naturally.
- 3:36If that is part of your morale, something that you value.
- 3:40Now, if that is not your MO, then yeah, maybe you struggle with it.
- 3:48But if you live an honest, rich, open life, it helps to create, as is said in the stone,
- 3:57it shapes a strong and steady life.
- 4:00It helps you in your course of life, making the right decisions, staying on the right path, if you will.
- 4:08And then when it comes to the practical, being honest about where you are and being willing to take the next right step, even if it's uncomfortable.
- 4:20So I'm going to share something that is kind of personal.
- 4:23I am very, I guess you would say, in my career, many people would say I have a very successful career.
- 4:34And I have been blessed to have a successful career in information technology without obtaining a degree.
- 4:42However, I am currently in school because I have decided, as uncomfortable as it may be, especially at my age, it's something that I want to obtain for my own self, to say that I've accomplished it, and it's not too late.
- 5:05So I have made the conscious decision that this is something that I want to do.
- 5:11So I'm going to do it.
- 5:15And I feel good about it, even though, yes, it doesn't, you know, come easy to me.
- 5:27As a matter of fact, it has its challenges.
- 5:33But I'm still working through it.
- 5:37And I'm proud of myself that I have made the decision to go back to school.
- 5:47But it is uncomfortable, but it's a decision that I have made.
- 5:54And again, I feel good about it.
- 5:57But I had to be honest with myself that because I didn't have a degree, that it was going to keep me from getting to some of the level, senior management, that I wanted to get to.
- 6:16Also, there are some conversations that I'm in that in those conversations, I can't participate intelligently.
- 6:28I have to sit quiet, listen to context, listen to everything that goes on around me, then take it back, then decipher everything.
- 6:40Whereas I think if I had that degree, I may be better suited to be a part of those conversations.
- 6:49Now, the spiritual aspect of it.
- 6:52It says, as I come before the Father with honesty.
- 6:57Let's pause right there.
- 6:59Because there is a scripture that I'm sure we're all familiar with, which is Romans 10, 9 through 10.
- 7:07And it starts by saying that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth, the Lord Jesus.
- 7:14Confess with the mouth.
- 7:16Be honest.
- 7:17Be open.
- 7:19Which is what this is talking about.
- 7:21If you confess, if you confess to somebody else, if you confess to the Lord, if you confess to your partner, if you confess to whomever, being open and honest about where you are.
- 7:36In the AA community, taking accountability, first admitting that you have become a victim
- 7:49to something.
- 7:50It has taken over your life and you don't want to be there anymore.
- 7:56You want to finally be in control, confessing it, being honest about it.
- 8:03So just like in the scripture, thou shall confess with the mouth and shall believe in thine heart.
- 8:12God will meet us where we are if we're honest.
- 8:17First, we have to be honest and open about it.
- 8:21Many people are willing to forgive if you're open and honest about it.
- 8:27And over time, it gets better.
- 8:29These simple qualities.
- 8:32It's nothing big.
- 8:34It doesn't have to be a huge fanfare.
- 8:37You don't have to have a parade.
- 8:39You don't even have to dress up for it, put on makeup, none of that.
- 8:43These are simple everyday gestures that you can take.
- 8:50Honesty doesn't require a lot from you.
- 8:54It just requires the best of you.
- 9:00Just the best of you.
- 9:02And I know for some people, that may be hard.
- 9:07But I believe in you.
- 9:09I believe in you.
- 9:13And it's a daily walk.
- 9:16It's not something you pick up today and put down tomorrow.
- 9:19Something you pick up today and you go tonight and all bets are off.
- 9:23It is a daily walk.
- 9:24It is a conscious effort to always walk in honesty and openness.
- 9:28no matter who you are, where you are, or what you're doing.
- 9:34It is always a mantle that you need to carry with you at all times
- 9:38because it will shape every part of your life.
- 9:43Good, bad, or indifferent.
- 9:45Not everybody's going to agree with your honesty.
- 9:48Sometimes your honesty is going to be,
- 9:52they're going to be like, look, I didn't need to hear that.
- 9:54You could have kept that to yourself.
- 9:56Trust me.
- 9:57I'm one of those that is brutally honest
- 10:01Do not ask my opinion if you're not ready for it
- 10:05I'm one of those
- 10:07But people who know me know that about me
- 10:10They know only ask Cristi if you are ready for the butt-ugly honest answer
- 10:19Now if you're not, then you just need to keep on moving past me
- 10:24but when you're ready for the real hard conversation, I'm here for you because I'm
- 10:30going to give it to you because guess what? Somebody gave it to me. And here's the thing
- 10:36as the recipient of honesty, you don't even have to fully accept it in that moment, but at some
- 10:44point you will. And when you do, when you accept it and you're honest with yourself about it,
- 10:55it brings about a change. And it normally brings about a change for the better. It shapes your life
- 11:05for the better. And that is a good thing. That's what you want. You want a better life.
- 11:14You want better results. You want a fully enriched life. Don't we all want that?
- 11:23I know I do. So why not be honest? Why not pick up that mantle? Not tomorrow, not later today,
- 11:33But you can start right now.
- 11:36It's an action that you can take right now.
- 11:41To be honest, willing, and open.
- 11:47Open to what life has for you.
- 11:52So let's close with a prayer.
- 11:55Father, give me honesty, willingness, and openness today.
- 12:03through your spirit guide me into a life of peace and growth as I follow your son.
- 12:13Amen. Amen. Thank you guys for joining me today. I appreciate you listening and I pray that you
- 12:20have an awesome day full of honesty and openness. Be well, take care, and cast your stone. Bye-bye.
