- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to Thrive in Business Together with Nikki and Ness.
- 0:11Speaker 2: We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of country, the Yagura and Wurundjeri people of Brisbane and Melbourne respectively, where Nikki and I both work and live.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hello again and welcome to a new day.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us today and, as promised, we have got part two of the wonderful conversation with Donna McGeorge.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Now.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Donna believes that workplaces are complex but not hard, and I love that perspective.
- 0:42Speaker 1: More often than not, it's getting the simple things right consistently that has the greatest impact.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Donna also knows that when we decide to be intentional, we can surprise ourselves with what we can achieve.
- 0:54Speaker 1: And, as you know, donna is an author of 11 books.
- 0:58Speaker 1: 11 books and publications, including bestselling.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's about time series and her latest, the Chat, gpt Revolution, which we touched on a few of those books in the last episode.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And we're going to go even deeper, particularly around this one day refund this 15%.
- 1:15Speaker 1: How do you get 15% time back?
- 1:17Speaker 1: I know that you're thinking after listening to the last episode, it all sounds amazing, but how do I do it?
- 1:23Speaker 1: So enjoy this episode.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Without further ado.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm going to let you devour and soak in the amazing insights that the wonderful Donna has to share.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Welcome back to part two of this incredible conversation with the one and only Donna McGeorge.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Donna, I'm going to let you jump straight in because we finished the last episode with Ness sharing so many insights about this 15% refund, which will be about the overwhelm of how do we get that back, and some people are probably listening going how the heck do I actually do this?
- 1:54Speaker 1: It all sounds great in theory, so I'm just going to hand the mic over to you.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So this was so much in retinas and one of the things that came to me when she was talking about the leader who was in back to back meetings all the time in their days, which is crazy.
- 2:07Speaker 3: This particularly did happen during COVID.
- 2:10Speaker 3: One of the things she didn't hear about, which has been in my early books, is called the 25 minute meeting.
- 2:14Speaker 3: And so showing up I'm going to say so now on and for the rest of your life from the blue area, you know, deans make them 25 minutes, so creating just a bit of space.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I'm not suggesting we're having back to back 25 minute meetings, but if you have to give yourself a five minute break between meetings, so I just sometimes think we end up in a different.
- 2:34Speaker 3: This is the same for everything we've been talking about.
- 2:36Speaker 3: We're in that one in default, certain that that's how much we're going to lose down and it's easy.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But there's no reason why you can't have 47 minute meetings right To give yourself space with burn after so, straight up, 25 minute meetings.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So there's a good action for anyone that's thinking at the end of this great, now just schedule 25 minute meetings.
- 2:54Speaker 3: The interest for me is that the fear of technology, which is something that you're so touched on.
- 2:59Speaker 3: That's been around since the printing press.
- 3:02Speaker 3: When the printing press came out, there's other articles.
- 3:06Speaker 3: You go through people's these articles that say they were short.
- 3:09Speaker 3: There was certain that there was going to be the end of humanity because we were end up drowning in books.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Apparently was the fear I'm not enough to remember when the internet happened and everyone in we're all going to lose our jobs and the internet was going to be this massive dystopian future.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Because of the internet and now that AI, which is a doing this massive dystopian thing, I am very optimistic around that, but we're going to be passionate and start to talk really quickly and film a self.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Doing that now is what we're going to use with the time that it recovers.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so I know that I can get back up to 30% of my time and that's a whole day.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Talk about one day refund.
- 3:48Speaker 3: That's a failed day.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I could get back minimum in my week If I've been going to use real AI tools, not just Chat 2P2.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I know that the research was just Chat 2P2.
- 3:58Speaker 3: We can do it back 30% if we use it, but there are other AI tools out there that we could be using that.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I still haven't structured the surface yet because they're being added every day.
- 4:08Speaker 3: There's different ones every day, and so my suggestion is what will you do with that time?
- 4:15Speaker 3: And so the answer to that, just in case you're interested, is that you now do a four-day work week and you now have one whole day back for what's really important in your life Because early excuses that we have around I can't exercise, I can't spend more time with my kids, I can't Whatever the thing is that you really want to do in that you can't because of early work.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You now have the opportunity to, because my biggest fear is it does free us up from time and then you just consume that time the way you want.
- 4:47Speaker 3: In our was meant to save us time and here we are, right, right, running the.
- 4:52Speaker 3: So I'm running the time for that's the discipline, that's the hard stuff, kind of like that throughout our set aside that's the hard stuff is really doing good about.
- 5:01Speaker 3: You know, I think work you can actually everyone, the commission, granted you can probably do a four-day work week right now if you begin to engage and work a bit differently, particularly with AI and chat, gpt and I would say, just some of the other strategies in the one-day refundable.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I love that.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, if you're watching the YouTube, that was some serious eye contact there.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It was almost like I challenge you.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I challenge you people.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If you don't believe, then contact Donna.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So true.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, that's something we've started in our business.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We haven't quite got to a four-day work week but we are doing a nine-day fortnight and we've just started that in the last couple of months and we were talking last week about how we were thinking about how we love that opportunity to have that time off.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So, like the last fortnight, I had the Friday off and I went and had lunch with my mum, you know in the middle of the day and it was just amazing to be able to fit that into the calendar and still feel like the weekend is there to do all the normal things that you need to get done over a weekend, or you know that tends to be busier time.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So we're walking the talk on our well.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Maybe it's 15% over two weeks, I'm not sure.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I haven't done the maths, but it's definitely chat and that's what I love about working together, niki, is that we challenge ourselves all the time to actually walk our talk and to build this life and this business where we can thrive without burning out, with really putting that sort of the strong boundaries in place around how we want to work, how we still want to be successful and be there for our clients and have the opportunity to enjoy our lives as well.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So I love where you're talking about, because what we hear the most is people saying that this guilt that they feel, particularly parents I'm not sure I mean that's the circles I move in but particularly parents having that guilt around being at work when they want to be with their kids or being, you know, with their kids, but feeling guilty about not working.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And I've lived that experience when my kids were younger.
- 6:59Speaker 2: So imagine the freedom and I love that you continue to say this isn't easy.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You have to really understand your purpose behind wanting that extra time and why that matters.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Because when we understand how it impacts on our lives to have that, then there's more incentive to push through those challenging times where we just feel like everything's happening to us right.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Someone else has got control of my diary and I don't get a say in it.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Well, that's kind of BS we do Something about that you've just touched on around.
- 7:34Speaker 3: you know I have my nine day fortnight or four and a half day week.
- 7:37Speaker 3: That's actually 15%, great.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So that's the job.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Hit the KPI, Nikki you have hit the KPI.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You know you wouldn't have lunch with your mum and they would have been part of a brain that would have think that you're skydiving off.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Right, I'm skydiving off on a rip day.
- 7:52Speaker 3: You don't have lunch, you go to the movie or do something, and I don't mean to make this about you know, housework or anything.
- 7:59Speaker 3: But sometimes I work in having that extra day where I'm not working and I do the kind of things that my weekends self will think before yeah, so they run errands, they have a whole bunch of stuff.
- 8:11Speaker 3: So when the weekend comes and they've got queues and obligations around that it doesn't feel like it's a stressful weekend because they've missed my 15% to do the kinds of things that mean that my weekends I don't know weekends back a little bit, but that's where life they also have to involve work.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So there's really something, something in that and I do it in a lot of.
- 8:35Speaker 3: You know, trim it, that's what you start.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Trim an RDO.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So you two all love to trim the RDO.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Trim an extra 27 and a half minutes.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Yes, you know there are so many benefits to that.
- 8:45Speaker 3: That verb of those and playing to go with the bang, go with the post office, run all the errands, the things that we'll do that I could do in the middle, but I had a business day that I'm able to do them, and then we'd get your real kids back.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yeah To just chill.
- 9:00Speaker 2: That's it.
- 9:00Speaker 2: We talk about life.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's a life admin day.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It's the stuff to everything you're talking about.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And my daughter started work this year and even just getting to the doctors she's like but I work full time and I don't know how to get an appointment in my lunch break and all the stress that she has that she has to take a day off in order to be able to do some medical appointments and the stress that comes up for her about that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've been asking for the time off and all that kind of thing.
- 9:27Speaker 2: So that whole concept around that's what that day is for and you're right, it's awesome.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Some of these have to happen on a work day when every other business you want to deal with is open, and I do love the fact that I just have the weekend to do what I want to do, because I have to be thinking about doing the next week or anything.
- 9:44Speaker 1: The other aspect to this and, donna, I love your phrase around this, you call it Radio Face Monday and, ness, and I actually have that as well Radio Face Monday, where you don't have to put makeup on, you don't have to do your hair, you don't have to do your hair on your PJs until I'm not even going to say what time Doing my work.
- 10:00Speaker 1: It's like we call it the behind the scenes day, but I'm going with Radio Face Monday now, but that's another way to create space in the week.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So there's still productivity that's happening there, but you're batching.
- 10:10Speaker 1: If you're a service based business, which a lot of you are, you're batching your type of work that you're doing.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So you know, I know for me, I know on a Tuesday, wednesday, thursday, I am ready, I am on, I am pumped and I'm there for you guys.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And on the Monday it's just in a different way, where it feels a little bit more cacuni, and and then there's the Friday.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So that's, that's the other aspect.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Isn't it Around?
- 10:32Speaker 1: It's it is the time off and not adding to it, which the default is to add to things instead of space, or, I don't know, have an early mark or whatever it might be.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But also, how are you managing your tasks and the type of work that you're doing?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Anything else to add to that, donna?
- 10:48Speaker 3: Look, I love Radio Face those days and they refly, that is usually my road to have those days as well, and I just started to get a lot of dude.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I put a really good face on for you today.
- 10:58Speaker 3: So the room's not, rather than is, they are, they're my days.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And so if you, if you look at the, the, the fabric of the first two hours, which is one of the books that you've got, one there there's, there's actually should do in the first, second, third, first two hours and the first two hours, despite the fact that the book's called the first two hours, my favorite quadrant is the fourth two hours, because that's the day you do really really good things that set you up for success into the future and can just get busy.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And my Mondays, my Radio Face Mondays, are that I'm doing my admin, I'm doing my, I'm doing touch ups I might have, I'm not doing a bird away or only podcast and do other kinds of things where I don't need to be kind of am right, they are not ablabated to to be with others, I'm not, I'm, this is my time.
- 11:48Speaker 3: The same things I do with a meeting rock pencil and if a meeting gets canceled, you go.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Wilbur, what are you doing that hour?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Whatever you like, and so familiar, that's not Mondays.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I kind of.
- 11:59Speaker 3: For a whole day we're out just trying to a her with a curve and do everything.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Is that my future self will thank me for oh?
- 12:07Speaker 1: and we love that term.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, we do that.
- 12:09Speaker 1: We talk about that a lot as well.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Oh, our future self is gonna thank us with that and all I'm thinking my past self.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Are you stuck in the busy trap on juggle Street, being all things to all people despite having a team?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Or perhaps your business is feeling chaotic?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Do the mini business health check to get 10 strategies in under 10 minutes so you can get time, freedom back, experience peak performance and finally Leverage smart growth in your business.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Head over to be to business togethercomau.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Forward slash health check and, if you're ready for us to help in a more hands-on way, email us at hello at business togethercomau and we'll set up a time to chat.
- 12:52Speaker 2: When we started the business, we set up this concept of every Monday we can call it radio phase that we can now, we will now so that it is, and I I feel it when that day Disappears for whatever reason, when we know, like that, my week is successful and I feel in control of how I am and what, what's going on in my week.
- 13:13Speaker 2: When I have the Monday for that, behind the scenes, for the no, it's not stressful, there's no customer contact and it is setting, setting myself up to get very clear on what are the outcomes that I want to achieve this week and how am I am mapping out how that's all going to happen and I know I just it's like our, our tools that we use the, the five to thrive template.
- 13:35Speaker 2: They're the things that I cannot imagine doing business Without that.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But the discipline it takes to be able to, when things get busy and clients want some of your time, I think that is our.
- 13:49Speaker 2: What are that tiger time, almost like nothing.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I'm protecting my cubs.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Nothing is going to come into the fold on that Monday and we are very, very strict on that.
- 14:00Speaker 2: And and it is all about setting up for success and having the systems and processes in place to allow that to happen.
- 14:07Speaker 2: So we don't start the week feeling oh you know what's going on today.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Oh my god, I've got to get in and do this and do that.
- 14:13Speaker 2: It's such a lovely way to be able to kick off a week and and do the things that are really important that you have to fit into other places in the week if you don't have that day.
- 14:23Speaker 2: So I love.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Also, looking at my diary two weeks out, yeah, and I happen to notice that I don't have much on a particular day.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Now I'm a professional trainer and facilitator as well, and the chances of me getting booked for a Sunday gig Inside of two weeks which is small, and so I look at that and go June.
- 14:43Speaker 3: In two weeks I've got a whole Wednesday where nothing's booked at the moment.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I'm going to try and protect the crap out of that and so 30 round minutes means yes, I can we do something.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I try and get along a Tuesday or a Thursday because I know that's a gift.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They happen very rarely and we're a gift.
- 14:59Speaker 3: So that's a artist.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Might some graded up that a whole day I can still with stuff.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I look at it completely opposite.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I don't know I'm trying to serve over days around it.
- 15:06Speaker 3: So doing I've got this extra day I purchase five off and out of the movies with my sister and not feel guilty about it.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I actually feel gratitude for it and and you've proactively created that and that reframe of it's a gift.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And I want to remind our listeners that, first of all, you've got three business owners Speaking to you right now saying it can be done, and we all have different circumstances and we all have different phases of life that we have been in previously in business and now.
- 15:36Speaker 1: But if you're doubting me, if you, yeah, but it's easy for you because or then that's the first thing you've got to have a look at.
- 15:43Speaker 1: That's that mindset, that belief is that that's holding you back.
- 15:46Speaker 1: So it absolutely can happen.
- 15:48Speaker 1: It will be hard at first, but remember, if you listen to the last episode, donna said there's a tipping point.
- 15:54Speaker 1: It's hard at first and actually I found that, unless that's that's kind of what you were talking about We've got the right tools, but we also have the right mindset and support around us.
- 16:03Speaker 1: To continue to also suck at it and then get back up and try again is another thing.
- 16:08Speaker 1: To be kind to ourselves, to give ourselves permission.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So I would love to honestly, and we could talk for days.
- 16:16Speaker 3: I feel like we could talk about a day Then we're going to do part showy.
- 16:19Speaker 3: No, you're going to do part right.
- 16:22Speaker 1: So, donna, if we were to say, based on this conversation and really probably thinking about I mean, we covered off a lot in both episodes, so if you want, it's just somewhere that you feel really called to give.
- 16:34Speaker 1: We like to give an actionable action.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Of course, as you know, at the end of each episode I kind of don't want to be too prescriptive about it Based on what we've talked about, what do you think is one really important action that people can take when they're trying to create this change and make it?
- 16:51Speaker 3: stick.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Well, I haven't been super prescriptive and I'm going to say right now, let me finish this, flip the earned button, go straight into your diary and book.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I'm meeting with yourself tomorrow at the very least, but there's a permanent, like one of those recurring meetings.
- 17:07Speaker 3: So that's the first very prescriptive thing.
- 17:09Speaker 3: I'd say yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 3: And if you're thinking, well, I can't do that the you know story you tell yourself that you can't do that Because it's just because you are moving to it.
- 17:18Speaker 3: The second thing I'm saying is that it was one thing you could do today that will future selfful.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Thank you for.
- 17:24Speaker 3: And I think protecting an earned diary is that, that maybe there's something else you could do.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But I'm constantly thinking about because, turn off and we get to our future self and we did a flip side.
- 17:34Speaker 3: We don't respect our future self enough, so we fill our diaries to the next thing that we find will be fine, and then we get there and we're downing and so, right it happens, I've done it to myself.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Just, you know, even on I've done it to myself, and so I'm constantly thinking about I never want my future self to be ever drowning again.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yeah, so what could I do now?
- 17:56Speaker 3: So my future self is thanking me and the writing.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Oh, good word, Love it.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Wow, that's driving.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Amazing, fabulous place to wrap up and we want to thank you so much for these marvelous two episodes.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Because there are so many things, may have to go back and listen again to be able to pull all the gold out of it.
- 18:15Speaker 2: There's so many things and you really have inspired me to think differently, particularly with you, know, kathy and Chat Charlie, to really start to embrace that a little bit more and find more ways to free up time.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So thank you so much, donna, for joining us.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Really, really appreciate it.
- 18:34Speaker 2: And of course, in the show notes we're going to pop in links to where people can find you and all that.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But just quickly, what's the best way people can enter your world?
- 18:44Speaker 3: wwwdonamcgeorgecom is where you'll find information about me, my books, the stuff that I do.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Fabulous.
