- 0:00Obviously it's it's you know it's been a great ride and I
- 0:02think for for me it's it's it's something that I love to do and
- 0:07and you know I I think as you look back on it and and realize
- 0:10all the things that you've been able to be a part of and be
- 0:14fortunate to be somewhat successful at.
- 0:16It's it's been it's been fun obviously I'm not going far so I
- 0:20guess I'll just be sitting on the other side of the table
- 0:24asking the questions. But it's been a great ride and
- 0:26and appreciate everything that that's you guys have have done
- 0:30for me and and whether they're good questions or bad questions
- 0:35I guess doesn't really matter but it's been it's been fun.
- 0:38I appreciate what you guys do, Zach.
- 0:40Sternio@nascar.com Kevin, obviously a lot of speed here at
- 0:44back in the spring. Have you do you feel like you
- 0:47guys could go out there and and win this race on on Sunday and
- 0:52right off into the sunset with the with the win?
- 0:55Well, we did run good and I think as you know you look back
- 0:58at just the the history of of everything that that we've done
- 1:02here, it's been, it's been OK. So you know we've been we've
- 1:06been rather hit or miss this year.
- 1:08But I think you know this is a place no matter how your season
- 1:12has gone you come to with the expect expectations of of
- 1:15running at the front of the pack.
- 1:16So hopefully, hopefully that's what we can do.
- 1:19Hi, Kevin, Holly Kane with the NASCAR wire service.
- 1:22So now this is it. That's it.
- 1:26Does it feel any different? Are you taking things in a
- 1:29little bit differently? What makes this weekend maybe a
- 1:32little bit more different than all of the ones leading up to
- 1:35Yeah, you know I think for for me all the weeks leading up to
- 1:40this particular one were really not that hard.
- 1:43I think you know this week was this week was was a little more
- 1:46difficult just because it is the IT is the last week and and you
- 1:50know with with your guys and the people and and everything that
- 1:53that that you do is is actually coming to an end.
- 1:56I don't think up until this point I don't think anybody
- 1:59really thought it was real and and this week it's it's pretty
- 2:01real. So so you know I think that this
- 2:05week has been definitely different than than everything
- 2:08leading up to this just because of the fact that there isn't a
- 2:11next week, there's been a next week up until this week.
- 2:15So look it's it's it's very different you know the the
- 2:20things that we that we have to do going forward.
- 2:24But it's all planned out and I think as as I talked to to Dale
- 2:28and and Dale Junior and just you know he was in a very similar
- 2:32situation where is you know the TV piece of it was planned out
- 2:35the race team piece of it's planned out.
- 2:36We have a management company, we have golf cart stores.
- 2:39All those things are already functioning and I think it would
- 2:42be much different if you weren't closing the book.
- 2:46And you know I think for for me I feel very fortunate to to be
- 2:50able to to open open the book and obviously our first chapter
- 2:54was it was a little bit different than than most
- 2:56people's. But it was it's it's the time
- 3:00that that we chose to to be able to say OK this is it And this is
- 3:05going to be you know the the last week and and you know
- 3:08coming to coming to Phoenix and and racing here for the last
- 3:12time when you used to come here and and race just for a hobby.
- 3:16Right. And you look forward to to
- 3:18coming to this particular racetrack on cup weekend and in
- 3:22February for the Copper Classic every year as as a West Coast
- 3:24racer that's that's what you did.
- 3:26So it is it is a little bit different.
- 3:28It's a lot different than the weeks past because there isn't a
- 3:31next one. Yeah.
- 3:32You know, I think, I think, Piper, you know, for for weeks,
- 3:35Piper's been like, dad, why do you have to go to the next one?
- 3:37You're already retiring. So she's she's pretty much over
- 3:43it. Keelan's terrified just because
- 3:45of the fact that he knows that I'm going to be a way more
- 3:48racist than what I was before. And he knows that I'm going to
- 3:51be, I'm going to be all over him, you know, a lot more than I
- 3:55am right now. Right now.
- 3:56He can he can go off and and do his thing and and race and and
- 4:01dad's not there to critique every single move that that he
- 4:03makes. So that party's over.
- 4:06And but you know, I think it's it's fun, Piper told Cheddar
- 4:10earlier. She said, she said he asked her.
- 4:13He said. So what are you looking forward
- 4:15to the most? She said.
- 4:17Well, Dad's going to come watch me race, so that'll be fun.
- 4:21All right, we'll go to Jeff Clark.
- 4:25Kevin, when when you came in, you know the the weekends were
- 4:28longer and you guys had to go test more often, but you also
- 4:31didn't have like a lot of the midweek stuff, you know, like
- 4:35whether it's looking at SMT or maybe video and things like
- 4:38that. And also a lot of drivers now it
- 4:41seems like, I mean you you pretty much had consistent
- 4:43sponsors, but a lot of them have more sponsors that ask for more
- 4:46appearances. So like, do you think overall
- 4:49that drivers when you first came in were busier and had more on
- 4:53their plate than today or is it the opposite?
- 4:56In today's drivers have way more on their plate, it's just
- 5:02different. And I and I I I say that not
- 5:05trying to be a smart aleck. It's the the the demands on the
- 5:08time are not as much as they used to be because I just I
- 5:12don't think I really think since you know 2009 when everything
- 5:17crashed and COVID the the demands on your time from an
- 5:22appearance standpoint and from testing standpoint and and days
- 5:26at the racetrack are much much less than than what they used to
- 5:29be. I think it's the it's the
- 5:31tedious work that that comes with the details that go into
- 5:36the video and the data and everything that that comes with
- 5:39that. And and really from the driver
- 5:41standpoint you're a part of an equation and you have to be
- 5:45pretty pretty involved in in everything that's going on to to
- 5:49be able to understand the insurance and outs of the
- 5:51equation to be able to make a difference.
- 5:53Otherwise you're a hindrance to really the whole system and you
- 5:56never really get anywhere right. And if they hit on something
- 5:58then you have a little bit of success, but it's never going to
- 6:01be consistent unless you really understand how to be a part of
- 6:06that equation. So I don't, I don't think that
- 6:10there's to me it's a lot easier than it used to be just because
- 6:14you don't have to go to to do so many sponsor appearances.
- 6:18Even though you have more sponsors, it's it.
- 6:19There's still not a a huge demand on your time like there
- 6:23used to be from from an appearance standpoint just
- 6:26because of the ways that the way that that companies utilize your
- 6:31time is just much different because of of the way that they
- 6:34do events and and things compared to how they used to do
- 6:37it with free for all marketing accounts budgets that that you
- 6:41just had dinners and different things all the time.
- 6:44So but I I still believe that one of the biggest challenges
- 6:50that many of our young drivers have is is really time
- 6:53management and trying to get that that circle of life and and
- 6:56balance to make yourself realize that you're really not that busy
- 7:00and and figure out how to do a lot more things in a short
- 7:03amount of time and still be able to function.
- 7:07So a lot of it just comes with structure and organization, and
- 7:10I think that's that's one thing we stress a lot too.
- 7:13Our young guys is hey, how do we, how do we get your circle of
- 7:15life in balance so you can do more because you're really not
- 7:18doing that much. It's not that hard.
- 7:21Pardon Nate. Nate Ryan on NBC Sports on your
- 7:24left again, The end of your career is not just like the end
- 7:28of your career, it's also sort of an end of an era for NASCAR
- 7:32generationally. There have been 6 champions were
- 7:35born in the 1970s, Gordon Johnson, Stewart Kenseth, Kurt
- 7:40Busch and yourself. And you're the last one.
- 7:43Hanging up so and not just those guys, but Carl Edwards, Dale
- 7:47Junior, he mentioned you know Ryan Newman, there were a lot of
- 7:49great drivers from the 1970s from like the Gen.
- 7:52X sort of generation. So I'm wondering like have you
- 7:55thought about that all or is there any sort of sense of pride
- 7:57about what you and your contemporaries, your peers have
- 8:00accomplished as it comes to an end?
- 8:02Well, I think when when you name that list, it's a it's a group
- 8:05of guys that came in in a great time because you got to race
- 8:09against the guys that were just ending their careers in them,
- 8:12you know in the early 2000s, late 90s.
- 8:17And then you got to go through a a new generation of guys that
- 8:19you came up with. And I guess there's I don't know
- 8:23how many there are, but there's a there's a number of us that
- 8:25went through almost 20 years of it together.
- 8:29And you really blocked out a whole generation in between for
- 8:33for the most part, just because you had so many guys that were
- 8:36so good and able to be successful.
- 8:39But we also came through, we also came through at a time when
- 8:45the sport was just out of control with money from a
- 8:48sponsorship standpoint and all the team owners were looking for
- 8:51the next great driver. So they started their Bush
- 8:55Series teams and everybody had a Bush Series team.
- 8:57And so we were at this fortunate time when when the the Cup
- 9:01Series team owners were just looking for anybody that might
- 9:05have a chance and you could find funding to fund that program
- 9:08with. All you had to do is just say
- 9:10you were starting a program and you'd have two or three
- 9:13opportunities for for sponsorship.
- 9:15So and that's how it was really as you went through for for me
- 9:19we when when we decided that we were going to go Cup racing we
- 9:23had three sponsors and we had to decide which one we wanted and
- 9:27that was that was at a very unique unique time in the sport
- 9:31and and I think I'm very fortunate to have raced in the
- 9:35you know previous generation to come through with the guys that
- 9:38I did and and now really for me I'm in a fortunate spot to be
- 9:42able to see the whole next generation starting.
- 9:47And you have some really young guys that are in their early
- 9:5030s, late 20s, mid 20s and now I get to take that and have raced
- 9:56against most all those guys that are be here for a long time and
- 9:58go up in the TV booth and already know them all and have
- 10:01raced against them and have a relationship with them.
- 10:04And so it's just a we came through at A at a my generation
- 10:08of of racers came through at a very unique time that was just
- 10:11really fortunate to to get to race against the previous
- 10:15generation my generation and the future generation to to see all
- 10:19those changes in cars and tires and racers and styles of racing
- 10:24and and we went from trial and error to simulators and and
- 10:29simulation and all I racing and everything that that comes with
- 10:33the sport now and and when when we did that before you just go
- 10:37to the racetrack and you'd you'd cut the cross member out and you
- 10:40drill holes in the in A-frame and you know you just you you
- 10:44just tested and tested and tested and tested at the track
- 10:47and and now you don't do it that way at all So but that's one
- 10:51thing I've always whether it was my race teams or the race team
- 10:55that I have now it's evolve or die right because this is an
- 10:59evolution process that that is never going to end because it is
- 11:03there there are engineers and smart people and you always have
- 11:07to keep your head up and your eyes open or you're going to
- 11:09miss something and get left behind.
- 11:11And you know, I think with some of the generation of guys that
- 11:15that were going out when we were coming in, it was they were very
- 11:18stuck on, you know, these are the springs that we need to run
- 11:21in the car. You can't do this and you can't
- 11:23do that. And they quickly got left
- 11:25behind. And then to me, I remember that
- 11:27like it was yesterday and and you look back at those guys and
- 11:30you're like, man, if they would have just kind of just followed
- 11:33the evolution of the sport and and let it come to them.
- 11:36They're still driven it fine. They just wouldn't have known
- 11:38what springs were in the car and what shocks were on the car and
- 11:40where it was going to go next. And whether it was high or low,
- 11:44it's still still went around the racetrack.
- 11:46It just went around the racetrack faster but that's what
- 11:49we do. And you know if you if you the
- 11:52the days of of knowing everything that's in your car
- 11:55and knowing how it works that you almost need to forget that
- 11:58because you're just interrupting interrupting the process of.
- 12:01Of all the smart people that that work on the car car to make
- 12:05it go faster and find something new and make a make a better
- 12:09part or peace and and so there's just a lot of things that have
- 12:14that have changed and I love that part of it.
- 12:15I love the evolution of of watching it change and and
- 12:19that's always been something that I've taken pride in in
- 12:22being able to to be a part of that change and and still be
- 12:25successful at what we did. The next generation is you know
- 12:32I think it's just it's just a different I think it is and I
- 12:36think I think with you know I think guys like Joey Logano are
- 12:41going to be great leaders. They already are you know you
- 12:46you see some of the younger guys start to speak up and in the
- 12:49meetings and I can't wait to continue to be a part of those
- 12:52those meetings as as we go forward and and listen to it
- 12:55evolve and grow and change and and see who who the the new
- 13:00leaders become and and because that's just the that's the
- 13:03process and that's how that's how it works and there's a lot
- 13:08of lot of really good racers and and now you know I think you'll
- 13:12see guys evolve into into leaders that that you might not
- 13:17have expected and and so yeah I mean that'll be fun for for
- 13:21everybody to watch and and learn but you've also got some guys
- 13:25that have been here for a while that'll that'll do a good job.
- 13:29All right, we're going to go to Janet.
- 13:34Hey Kevin, Jenna fryer AP. Everything you've gone through
- 13:37learn good, bad and different. What do you not want Keelan and
- 13:41Piper to do? What do I not what?
- 13:44What do you not want? Everything you've learned,
- 13:47Everything you've done and experienced What?
- 13:49What? What do you not want Keelan and
- 13:51Piper to do? Well, the one thing that I tell
- 13:54Keelan is I always tell him I'm. I'm like, hey, we'll we'll get
- 14:00into some sort of disagreement of of why you should do
- 14:04something or why you shouldn't do something.
- 14:05And I'll always tell him, he'll say, well you did this or you
- 14:08did that And I said I'll tell him that's exactly why I'm
- 14:11sitting here telling you not to do that.
- 14:14If you'll just shut up and listen I'll make you better.
- 14:17It's not very hard, right. I've already done.
- 14:20I've already been down this road and I've already made this
- 14:22mistake and and really that's that's one of the great
- 14:25advantages that we have Where you know from from the
- 14:28management side is if you'll just listen I'm not telling you
- 14:33this is how you have to do it but just listen to me and then
- 14:36you take it and you evolve from there but don't don't make the
- 14:39simple mistakes And I think you know from from Piper's
- 14:44standpoint she's still trying to figure it all out and and you
- 14:47know but but Keelan's pretty easy because he's a lot like me
- 14:51he he's he's he's a lot like me in the in the way that he acts
- 14:54the things that he does and things that he says but you know
- 15:00he's he for me is is very coachable because of the fact
- 15:04that I know his next move like it's really simple.
- 15:08So you know I think for for him if he'll just listen and not
- 15:11make some of the same mistakes and just have a better starting
- 15:15point then he can take it in and evolve from there.
- 15:18And if we can make his sister just be in charge of everything,
- 15:21she will definitely take charge. So that that seems pretty easy
- 15:26if if, you know, if, if if it were me, I would, I would just
- 15:29say, you know, I I would before I had kids, I would say I don't
- 15:33ever get involved in racing. You don't want to do it.
- 15:36It's it's not the lifestyle that you want to live.
- 15:38And then you have kids and you look around and you realize,
- 15:42man, this is really what my life is all about.
- 15:45I love racing and that really came from watching Keelan race
- 15:48and watching him grow to love the sport and watching the other
- 15:51parents and the other kids and and everything that they did was
- 15:56all about racing because they loved going to the racetrack and
- 15:58it brought them together and and that's really what I mean,
- 16:01that's what I've done my whole life.
- 16:02You just get, you get in this, you get in this mode where you
- 16:06walk in the racetrack, you've got your head down, you walk to
- 16:08your hauler, you put your suit on, you walk walk from the
- 16:10hauler to the to the car and from the car to the hauler and
- 16:13from the hauler home. And I can't wait to walk in the
- 16:16racetrack with my head up and just look around because I'm I
- 16:19really have never done that. So it's you know I think for for
- 16:23them is is probably the best advice I can give them is to is
- 16:27to try to have fun because it's not always going to be fun
- 16:32there's always going to be something that's hard and and in
- 16:34order to be good at this it's not going to be it's not going
- 16:38to be fun most of the time. So I I don't, I don't know that
- 16:43answers your question. But you know I think he likes to
- 16:47listen to anybody but me. Yeah.
- 16:51So but he listens and you know I think as as he he listens but
- 16:57doesn't want you to think he's listening which I'm the same
- 16:59way. So it's fine.
- 17:01But you know I think for for me, I've learned that I don't need
- 17:04to be the coach. I need to coach through the
- 17:05coach, put him around the people that that I can trust with what
- 17:11I think is the right way to teach the right methods because
- 17:13you're going to get a lot further so that that to me is a
- 17:16better strategy. Thanks to Jeff Burton.
- 17:19All right. Apologies, we are not going to
- 17:21get to all the questions. We probably could spend an
- 17:23entire hour in here talking with Kevin.
- 17:26So Kelly, I believe you have something for Kevin as we wrap
- 17:29here. But obviously we don't want to
- 17:31make you late for your final practice session, but hopefully
- 17:34you'll spend a little bit of time with us on Sunday once you
- 17:37get out of the car. All right, Kelly.
- 17:40Thank you, Amanda, Kevin. I'm here on behalf of the NMPA.
- 17:44You've won our Driver of the Year.
- 17:45Award. 2347 times I believe it is.
- 17:50Our members over the last couple weeks wanted to put something
- 17:53together for you. It is a congratulations on a
- 17:56Hall of Fame career and now welcome to the dark side of
- 17:59being one of us. There's also two very important
- 18:03pieces of things in here we have.
- 18:06We wanted to be the first ones to prevent to present you with a
- 18:09media hard card instead of a driver hard card.
- 18:12You might want to look on the back there, there's a disclaimer
- 18:15that I don't know if this is actually going to get you access
- 18:16to anything. Yeah, and then we've also stuck
- 18:20in here an application to join the NMPA.
- 18:23We know you're good for it, but Promptus is appreciated when it
- 18:26comes to your $60.00. So again, congratulations and
- 18:29enjoy.
