- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:07to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for September 20th.
- 0:12Today is National Dance Day, a celebration that recognizes one
- 0:16of humanity's most universal forms of expression.
- 0:20Established in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, the creator of So You
- 0:26Think You Can Dance, this holiday encourages people of all
- 0:29ages and abilities to get moving and experience the joy of dance.
- 0:34What makes National Dance Day special is that it's not about
- 0:37perfect technique or professional training.
- 0:39It's about celebrating dance as a fundamental human impulse,
- 0:43something we do when we're happy, when music moves us, or
- 0:47when we simply need to express what words cannot capture.
- 0:51From ancient tribal ceremonies to modern flash mobs, the
- 0:54ballroom elegance to hip hop innovation, dance transcends
- 0:59cultural boundaries and speaks a language everyone understands.
- 1:03It's one of the few activities that simultaneously engages the
- 1:07body, mind, and spirit, creating a unique form of human
- 1:11expression that's both deeply personal and universally shared.
- 1:16And that brings us to today's quote from Martha Graham,
- 1:19legendary modern dance pioneer who once said all that is
- 1:24important is this one moment in movement.
- 1:28Make the moment vital and worth living.
- 1:32Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.
- 1:36Graham's words capture the essence of what makes dance so
- 1:40powerful and what National Dance Day celebrates.
- 1:44But it can also be applied to your day-to-day living.
- 1:48I mean, dance exists entirely in the present moment.
- 1:51You can't dance yesterday's dance or tomorrow's dance.
- 1:55You can only dance now, with the body you have, in the space
- 1:58you're in, with whatever music is playing now.
- 2:01This is what makes dance both terrifying and liberating.
- 2:05There's nowhere to hide in movement, no editing, no
- 2:08revision, no do overs in real time.
- 2:10Each gesture, every step, every moment of expression happens,
- 2:15and then it's gone, replaced by the next moment of possibility.
- 2:19Graham understood that this temporary nature isn't dance's
- 2:22weakness, it's a strength. Because dance can't be preserved
- 2:27in its pure form, each moment of movement becomes precious.
- 2:32Every time we dance, we're creating something that will
- 2:34never exist again. In exactly the same way, This
- 2:38applies whether you're performing on stage or dancing
- 2:41alone in your kitchen. The moment you allow your body
- 2:43to respond to rhythm, you're participating in something vital
- 2:48and alive, something that makes the moment worth living.
- 2:54So as you head into your day, consider Martha Graham's wisdom
- 2:57about making each moment vital and worth living.
- 3:01You don't need to literally dance today though if you feel
- 3:04moved to, go for it. But you can embrace the dancers
- 3:08mindset of being fully present in your movements and actions.
- 3:13What would change if you approach just one activity today
- 3:16with the same presence and intention a dancer brings to
- 3:19movement? Maybe it's walking to a meeting
- 3:22with awareness of each step. Maybe it's cooking dinner with
- 3:26attention to rhythm of chopping and stirring.
- 3:30Maybe it's simply moving through your day with more consciousness
- 3:33and less autopilot. Dance reminds us that our bodies
- 3:37are not just vehicles for carrying our brains around.
- 3:40They're instruments of expression, connection and joy.
- 3:46That's going to do it for today. I'm Henry Gibbons, signing off
- 3:50for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:55Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
