- 0:16Speaker 1: Happy Hope Day, everybody.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's a Wednesday here on the Sean O'Connell Show. We're
- 0:22Speaker 2: glad to have you with us as we push towards
- 0:26Speaker 2: a weekend where SEC football comes to Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Only the second time. Is that right?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Only the second time an SEC opponent has come to
- 0:38Speaker 2: Salt Lake City. It'll be Arkansas-Rice-Eccles. who won handily over
- 0:43Speaker 2: North Alabama. Obscure mascot challenge. What's the mascot? James Peterson,
- 0:48Speaker 2: behind the glass today. My producer right now. It's not infinite.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Nothing's infinite, right? The world could end tomorrow, right?
- 0:57Speaker 1: There you go. No, let's see.
- 0:59Speaker 3: North Alabama Terrapins.
- 1:05Speaker 1: They're lions.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Lions.
- 1:07Speaker 1: The North Alabama Lions. It's like not Terrapins turtles. They're
- 1:11Speaker 1: not turtles.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Anyway, Arkansas coming to rice Eccles stadium, the NFL returns tonight.
- 1:17Speaker 2: You've got NFL football tomorrow night. You've got college football
- 1:21Speaker 2: tomorrow night. You've got college football Friday night. You've got
- 1:24Speaker 2: college football all Saturday. You've got a full slate of
- 1:27Speaker 2: NFL games Sunday and Monday. So really last night was
- 1:32Speaker 2: the only night you didn't have football for The foreseeable future.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Sammy Mora is going to join us on the show
- 1:38Speaker 2: today on a youth zone. Wednesday, Ari Temkin is going
- 1:41Speaker 2: to drop by at one o'clock. We've got some great
- 1:44Speaker 2: stuff in the daily dump for you. And we'll take
- 1:46Speaker 2: a look at NFL football, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 1:49Speaker 2: zero 700. I always like to hear from all of
- 1:52Speaker 2: you out there. I put a simple poll question up today.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I did this last year around this time as well.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I like to get a finger on the pulse. And
- 2:02Speaker 2: I think that here in salt Lake city, here in
- 2:05Speaker 2: the state of Utah. I think it goes up and
- 2:07Speaker 2: down if I'm being honest, based on how good our
- 2:10Speaker 2: local college.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Teams are, but.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Which of these do you prioritize as a football fan,
- 2:17Speaker 2: college football, the NFL, or you must watch both, which
- 2:22Speaker 2: means they're on truly equal footing for you.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I've been pretty clear.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I I'm fully aware that NFL football is king of
- 2:33Speaker 2: the castle for pretty much everybody.
- 2:36Speaker 1: For me, college football is the first love.
- 2:40Speaker 2: If you had to get rid of one of them,
- 2:43Speaker 2: I will blaspheme by saying I would get rid of
- 2:45Speaker 2: the NFL and keep college football. College football is doing
- 2:49Speaker 2: a bunch of things that is eroding that love for
- 2:52Speaker 2: me a little bit that is making me not want
- 2:56Speaker 2: to be so loyal to college football because the game
- 2:59Speaker 2: is becoming closer and closer to the NFL, except the
- 3:02Speaker 2: NFL has collective bargaining issues. which allows for continuity, which
- 3:06Speaker 2: allows for me to know what a team is supposed
- 3:09Speaker 2: to look like from year to year to year. So,
- 3:13Speaker 2: you know, the NFL, I think, is strengthening its position while,
- 3:17Speaker 2: at least for me, while college football is sort of
- 3:20Speaker 2: undermining itself. But for you as a football fan, for
- 3:23Speaker 2: you as a sports fan, 877-353-0700. Loved it when you
- 3:25Speaker 2: called us the other day. Call today if you'd like.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Text or just respond to the Twitter poll college football, NFL,
- 3:36Speaker 2: or you've got to watch both. And if you're going
- 3:39Speaker 2: to say both, don't just be like, well, I do
- 3:42Speaker 2: watch both. I mean, like, do you schedule your week.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Around NFL games?
- 3:47Speaker 2: The way that you do around college football games, you
- 3:50Speaker 2: can't do it from an attendance standpoint in the market.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Now you can drive down to Vegas and you can
- 3:55Speaker 2: go to Raider games. If that's your team, it's a
- 3:58Speaker 2: pretty easy and mostly cheap flight to get to Denver
- 4:01Speaker 2: and or to get to San Francisco or to get
- 4:04Speaker 2: to LA or anything like that. Seattle is a little
- 4:08Speaker 2: bit more of a jaunt, but we've got one of
- 4:11Speaker 2: the best airports in the world. We've got one of
- 4:13Speaker 2: the best, I think the best airport in the United States.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And if you can afford it, you can drop a
- 4:20Speaker 2: couple grand every weekend and head to an NFL game
- 4:23Speaker 2: if you want.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But Do you actually do that?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Do you schedule your life around NFL football the way
- 4:29Speaker 2: you do around college football? Because I think most of you,
- 4:32Speaker 2: if you're listening in the midday on a Wednesday on
- 4:36Speaker 2: the home of the Utes, you probably are at this
- 4:38Speaker 2: time of year. You're probably scheduling a lot of your
- 4:40Speaker 2: life around Utah football games. And I applaud you for
- 4:43Speaker 2: that because I do it as part of my job.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I also do it because I'm very excited about doing it.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Oftentimes the better half. is not as excited about scheduling
- 4:56Speaker 2: things around Utah football.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But I digress. You don't want to expound on that.
- 5:02Speaker 1: James college football, NFL, or both are must watch for you.
- 5:10Speaker 3: So I don't know that I schedule my life around
- 5:17Speaker 3: either as a fan. I obviously, because this is my job,
- 5:21Speaker 3: I schedule my life around Utah football. But if it
- 5:24Speaker 3: weren't my job, I don't know that I would be
- 5:26Speaker 3: scheduling my life around Ohio State, who I root for, right?
- 5:30Speaker 3: Or any of the local teams here, who I root
- 5:33Speaker 3: for as well, because I'm a proud Utahan, right? But
- 5:39Speaker 3: I don't know that I do that so much for
- 5:41Speaker 3: Colts or my NFL team or NFL in general. So
- 5:46Speaker 3: maybe I'm not as diehard as some football fans are.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But I will say if.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I had to choose, okay, I only watch NFL or
- 5:57Speaker 3: I only watch college football. I would only watch NFL.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I like the higher level. I like the adults in
- 6:07Speaker 1: the room.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Feel, especially with the way, as you alluded to, the
- 6:13Speaker 3: way things have just eroded. The structure around college football
- 6:17Speaker 3: is completely eroded. I like that with the CBA, there's
- 6:21Speaker 3: a hard structure structure. that cannot be easily broken with
- 6:26Speaker 3: pro sports and NFL included. So I, I would say
- 6:32Speaker 3: that I would pick NFL over college football if I
- 6:35Speaker 3: had to, but I'm like the casual guy who you said,
- 6:38Speaker 3: you can't answer this way.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Of course I watch both.
- 6:41Speaker 2: We all watch both, but it's kind of like, like
- 6:43Speaker 2: we all watch NHL hockey and the NBA, especially now
- 6:48Speaker 2: in the Utah market. We are, you have to prioritize
- 6:51Speaker 2: one or another. If you, A recent publication is to
- 6:54Speaker 2: be believed. We are going to also have to factor
- 6:57Speaker 2: in major league baseball to this sooner than later, which
- 7:00Speaker 2: is something we did not get to on the show yesterday.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I'm thrilled.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We can spend some time on today because you saw it.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I saw it. We all saw it.
- 7:10Speaker 2: The major league baseball race for a new team appears.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Salt Lake city is a, a decently firm leader right now.
- 7:21Speaker 2: We thought this was the case. Big League Utah has
- 7:23Speaker 2: done a lot of really good work. I drive to
- 7:27Speaker 2: the airport on North Temple all the time. There is
- 7:30Speaker 2: sincere development happening around the future ballpark site. There's a
- 7:35Speaker 2: lot of development that still needs to happen around that
- 7:38Speaker 2: site in order to make it what they want to
- 7:41Speaker 2: make it. I'm really curious as to what's going to
- 7:43Speaker 2: happen to the sort of existing businesses around there because
- 7:48Speaker 2: the infrastructure is that you expect around a professional baseball
- 7:53Speaker 2: stadium around a professional baseball team is in, in modern
- 7:59Speaker 2: times is, you know, like, modern chains and recently built
- 8:04Speaker 2: shops and restaurants and bars and walkability and all these things.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And right now you don't have that at that, in
- 8:13Speaker 2: that portion of the Valley, that's going to take some
- 8:17Speaker 2: social engineering to go along with the business machinations in
- 8:21Speaker 2: order to make that thing happen.
- 8:22Speaker 3: But in the plans with the whole sports and entertainment district, they're,
- 8:27Speaker 3: they're going to build, hotels and, and restaurants and all that.
- 8:32Speaker 1: But it's not there yet. It's going to be a
- 8:34Speaker 1: lot of building.
- 8:35Speaker 2: And what I'm really talking about is not like, can
- 8:37Speaker 2: you build stuff out there?
- 8:38Speaker 1: What I'm talking about is there's a human element to.
- 8:41Speaker 2: That part of salt Lake city that right now is,
- 8:46Speaker 2: you know, it's, it's, I want to be sensitive about this.
- 8:49Speaker 1: It's not that the people themselves are undesirable.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's that there's an undesirable element of drug use and
- 8:54Speaker 2: things like that. and homelessness that's going on out there.
- 8:57Speaker 2: And you're going to have to, like you did with
- 9:00Speaker 2: the Olympics. Remember this, when we socially engineered homelessness out
- 9:04Speaker 2: of salt Lake city for the 2002 Olympics, they're going
- 9:07Speaker 2: to have to try to do that for major league baseball.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And that's easier said than done.
- 9:11Speaker 2: If you've been to any other like downtown area, major
- 9:14Speaker 2: league baseball parks, but there's a lot going on when
- 9:17Speaker 2: it comes to the sporting landscape of salt Lake city,
- 9:20Speaker 2: jazz basketball is back in a month.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Mammoth hockey is back in a month and less than
- 9:25Speaker 1: a month.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And hopefully sooner than later, Salt Lake city is, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 2: we've heard by 2030 going to be granted a team
- 9:35Speaker 2: when they would actually start playing.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Who knows? We're all going to try and jump on
- 9:38Speaker 1: that bandwagon.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And when you have options, we make fun of Los
- 9:44Speaker 2: Angeles for this. We make fun of Miami for this.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I will continue to do so because I don't understand that.
- 9:51Speaker 2: When people are just like, I got better things to do.
- 9:53Speaker 2: They go to a USC football game. You don't have
- 9:57Speaker 2: my same list of priorities.
- 9:59Speaker 1: If you're a.
- 9:59Speaker 2: College football fan, who's like a USC alum or someone
- 10:03Speaker 2: who's USC adjacent. And if I lived in Pasadena, California,
- 10:09Speaker 2: I can't stand the Trojans. I grew up on Notre
- 10:11Speaker 2: Dame football, obviously became married to Utah football, and they
- 10:15Speaker 2: developed a nice rivalry with, with the Trojans over the
- 10:18Speaker 2: course of their time in the pack 12. And for
- 10:21Speaker 2: my money got the better hand of that. Uh, if
- 10:25Speaker 2: I lived there, I would be going to USC games
- 10:27Speaker 2: because you have an opportunity to be there for big
- 10:30Speaker 2: time college football. And that's my list of priorities as
- 10:35Speaker 2: a sports fan, college football. It goes for me, it
- 10:40Speaker 2: goes college football. One, everybody else filters in behind. What
- 10:47Speaker 2: do I want the most? What do I like the most?
- 10:48Speaker 2: What do I watch the most of? What do I
- 10:50Speaker 2: talk about with my friends? The most college football is
- 10:53Speaker 2: at the top. And I, I think that would be
- 10:56Speaker 2: the case. I'm quite sure that would be the case,
- 10:59Speaker 2: even if it wasn't my job to be sitting here
- 11:01Speaker 2: and talking college football.
- 11:03Speaker 1: So eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 11:06Speaker 2: NFL college football, or do they really take equal priority?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Interesting text from Tom on the text line. OC says
- 11:21Speaker 3: college football is so unpredictable and a must watch. He,
- 11:25Speaker 3: apparently Oregon ducks fan. He says he's got a ducks
- 11:28Speaker 3: calendar on his phone, but then he says NFL is
- 11:30Speaker 3: something I can watch any game, any all caps, even
- 11:34Speaker 3: Titans and Cardinals. So I'm, I'm a little, that sounds
- 11:37Speaker 3: to me and maybe Tom, you can clarify here. It
- 11:40Speaker 3: sounds to me like NFL, because you can watch any
- 11:45Speaker 3: game and enjoy it maybe higher on the spectrum or
- 11:50Speaker 3: is it, or maybe not because you don't have a diehard,
- 11:54Speaker 3: team as, as diehard as a ducks fan, as you are.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's an interesting text from Tom. So, okay. This is
- 11:59Speaker 1: really interesting.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I guess this would be a better way to structure
- 12:03Speaker 2: the conversation around college football. Like I would have been
- 12:08Speaker 2: watching college football Friday and Saturday, even if I didn't
- 12:15Speaker 2: tune into the BYU.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Game, which I watched for obvious reasons, right?
- 12:18Speaker 2: I was watching Houston this weekend for again, obvious reasons.
- 12:23Speaker 2: if I didn't have a big 12 lens to look through,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I would be watching LSU instead. and I was flipping
- 12:32Speaker 2: back and forth all these games, right? If Kyle Winningham
- 12:36Speaker 2: wasn't the head coach at Michigan now, and there weren't
- 12:38Speaker 2: former coaches and players all up and down that Michigan
- 12:41Speaker 2: roster and staff, I still would have been tuning in
- 12:44Speaker 2: to watch as, and I wouldn't have tuned in at
- 12:47Speaker 2: the start.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I wouldn't have tuned in a kickoff, right?
- 12:48Speaker 2: But at halftime when it's Western Michigan and Michigan that
- 12:52Speaker 2: are close, I absolutely would have been watching that hoping.
- 12:55Speaker 1: That we could see like a crazy upset. You know
- 12:58Speaker 1: what I mean? Like in the NFL, The Titans-Cardinals game,
- 13:04Speaker 1: I don't watch. I'm the opposite.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Give me any game in college football and I'll watch
- 13:11Speaker 3: the Niners-NFL.
- 13:13Speaker 1: That's what Maction is, dude.
- 13:15Speaker 2: People are just like, give me, and a lot of
- 13:18Speaker 2: them are junkie gamblers.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But people are like, give me Maction. Give me Wednesday night.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Give me Tuesday night college football in, you know, late October,
- 13:30Speaker 2: early November. So I can watch football every week. We
- 13:32Speaker 2: don't care if Toledo wins. We will never care if
- 13:36Speaker 2: Toledo wins. We just want to watch college football. That's
- 13:39Speaker 2: what Maction is. And look, I fully respect. There are
- 13:42Speaker 2: people who can watch regular season NL East football.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Baseball games.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Everyone.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That ain't me.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Shadow.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I believe our guy, Jordan Bianucci might be one of
- 13:57Speaker 3: those baseball fans. He's very into baseball giants fan, but
- 14:02Speaker 3: I think he would watch any game, no matter how
- 14:05Speaker 3: low the stakes, which again, not that baseball fan either.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I applaud you. I, because we have talked about this
- 14:16Speaker 1: so much. And because of the story is not yet dead.
- 14:20Speaker 2: The NCAA yesterday, and maybe this is one of the
- 14:24Speaker 2: things that makes people prioritize the NFL over college football
- 14:28Speaker 2: in these last five or six years, where the insanity
- 14:30Speaker 2: of college football has gotten to be too much for
- 14:33Speaker 2: the casual fan. It's starting to be too much for even,
- 14:36Speaker 2: I consider myself as diehard, as hardcore of a college
- 14:39Speaker 2: football fan as there is. Some of these things are
- 14:42Speaker 2: becoming corrosive to my loyalty. So I don't judge anybody
- 14:47Speaker 2: for jumping off a bandwagon or wanting to climb on
- 14:49Speaker 2: somewhere else. This might be one of those things that
- 14:53Speaker 2: makes you feel like, all right, I'm done here. Because
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think that the professional leagues, for the most part,
- 15:01Speaker 2: with the exception maybe of Major League Baseball, and obviously
- 15:05Speaker 2: European soccer has its own problems and things like that,
- 15:08Speaker 2: but collective bargaining salary cap structures in the NFL mean
- 15:13Speaker 2: that parity in the NFL... is supposed to be the
- 15:16Speaker 2: way of things. There's always going to be big market
- 15:19Speaker 2: teams that have certain advantages where guys want to go
- 15:21Speaker 2: play and live in a certain city and have access
- 15:24Speaker 2: to certain lifestyle points and things like that. But the
- 15:28Speaker 2: way the NFL is set up, they've got a hard
- 15:30Speaker 2: salary cap structure. They've got a draft that is supposed
- 15:34Speaker 2: to help the bad teams catch up to the good
- 15:36Speaker 2: teams on kind of a five or 10 year cycle.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You have all of these things that are put in
- 15:43Speaker 2: place for the sake of parody college football has never
- 15:49Speaker 2: really had true parody, but we've gotten better at it.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And certain eras, certain times we're now getting away from it.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And that's what the protect college sports act is about
- 16:00Speaker 2: because it's becoming more like European soccer, where if you
- 16:03Speaker 2: have the most money, you end up with the most players.
- 16:06Speaker 2: If you have the most money, you end up with
- 16:07Speaker 2: the best coaches. That has kind of always been the
- 16:09Speaker 2: case on the coaching front. It always been that case
- 16:12Speaker 2: on the player front to a certain extent too, but
- 16:14Speaker 2: it's getting worse and worse, right?
- 16:16Speaker 1: Because of the NIL stuff.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And part of that I think is, is why people
- 16:22Speaker 2: can look at college football and they can look at
- 16:24Speaker 2: the NFL and they can say, well, one of these
- 16:26Speaker 2: things is designed to give me competitive integrity.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And the other one pretends to be that way, but
- 16:32Speaker 1: doesn't really.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Have anything firm in place to that makes sure that
- 16:36Speaker 2: we get it year over year over year. And this
- 16:39Speaker 2: might be one of the better examples from the Michigan
- 16:41Speaker 2: Western Michigan game. This past weekend, the NCAA is now
- 16:45Speaker 2: doing this issuing new guidance to quote, establish a standard
- 16:51Speaker 2: timing protocol that ensures consistency in the administration of all
- 16:55Speaker 2: college football games. And I'll give you a dollar. If
- 16:58Speaker 2: you can guess which clock you're supposed to follow. when
- 17:01Speaker 2: it comes to time being there or not being there
- 17:04Speaker 2: at the end of a game or the end of
- 17:06Speaker 2: a half or the end of a quarter and getting
- 17:08Speaker 2: an extra play or not getting an extra play or
- 17:11Speaker 2: not putting a second back on the clock. So you
- 17:14Speaker 2: can take a Mulligan on that hail Mary pass. You're
- 17:19Speaker 2: absolutely right. If you're driving around or you're sitting at
- 17:22Speaker 2: work and you're thinking to yourself, well, I bet what
- 17:24Speaker 2: he's describing is a correction by the NCAA that says
- 17:30Speaker 2: what happened in the Michigan Western Michigan game is not
- 17:34Speaker 2: supposed to happen. So now we're going to take a
- 17:37Speaker 2: firm stance and make sure it doesn't happen. That's exactly
- 17:40Speaker 2: what they're doing. The damage is done for Western Michigan.
- 17:45Speaker 2: To some extent it's done for Michigan also, but as
- 17:49Speaker 2: far as we sit here today on a Wednesday, September 9th,
- 17:55Speaker 2: They do not lose that game. A disastrous, a catastrophic,
- 17:59Speaker 2: a cataclysmic event for Michigan football if they lose that
- 18:03Speaker 2: game on the relatively close heels of being a national
- 18:08Speaker 2: championship program scandal that then is corrected by hiring the
- 18:13Speaker 2: most scandal-proof coach in the business. Of course, they created
- 18:16Speaker 2: a minor amount of scandal here in Salt Lake City,
- 18:18Speaker 2: but Michigan doesn't care about that. And now they find
- 18:21Speaker 2: themselves at, the center of a conversation about whether or
- 18:25Speaker 2: not the big boys, the haves in football are truly
- 18:29Speaker 2: in a kind of like abusive relationship with the have
- 18:32Speaker 2: nots to where they get away with murder. They get
- 18:36Speaker 2: away with losing and someone is going to try to
- 18:38Speaker 2: protect them from losing by, I don't know, throwing a
- 18:40Speaker 2: second back on.
- 18:41Speaker 1: The game clock.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Well, the NCAA has come down and said, no, no, no, no, no.
- 18:45Speaker 2: We don't, we don't ever want to see that happen again.
- 18:48Speaker 2: No word as of whether or not there's going to
- 18:50Speaker 2: be a correction on the fact that it did happen.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But the official memo has come down from the NCAA.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Official time for all college football games is the time
- 19:00Speaker 2: displayed on the in-stadium game clock. When a replay review
- 19:04Speaker 2: requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay
- 19:07Speaker 2: official's decision will be based on the embedded game clock
- 19:11Speaker 2: contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable
- 19:15Speaker 2: to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will
- 19:17Speaker 2: use the game clock graphic displayed as part of the
- 19:20Speaker 2: broadcast feed. In short, the 0-0-0 that you saw at
- 19:26Speaker 2: the end of that Michigan game, in this language, is
- 19:30Speaker 2: the end of the football game. This is not breaking news, okay?
- 19:36Speaker 2: This is something that we kind of knew was the
- 19:39Speaker 2: norm in college football. Now, I do believe that this
- 19:43Speaker 2: clock that they're referring to here, the broadcast clock, will have,
- 19:47Speaker 2: sooner than later, potentially even this season, will have.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Tenths of seconds put on it. You will go to
- 19:55Speaker 1: the decimals.
- 19:56Speaker 2: You will go to the college basketball.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You will go to the NBA clock.
- 20:02Speaker 2: With less than a minute remaining in a quarter or
- 20:04Speaker 2: a half or a game, you can have 5.4 seconds left, 9.1
- 20:10Speaker 2: seconds left. You just put the decimal point in there.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Scoreboards have that. You can make it happen, right? But
- 20:17Speaker 2: the language in this adjustment, in this clarification, is, hey,
- 20:24Speaker 2: that was not supposed to happen. The official time is
- 20:27Speaker 2: the one that we all saw and the super secret
- 20:30Speaker 2: replay clock that was actually used to put a second
- 20:34Speaker 2: back on the clock for Michigan is That's not the
- 20:37Speaker 2: correct protocol, and that's not what the NCAA wants to
- 20:39Speaker 2: happen moving forward. If you are Western Michigan, you're like, great, wonderful.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I'm glad that we clarified that. It doesn't give us
- 20:47Speaker 2: the biggest win in program history that we were looking for, though.
- 20:51Speaker 1: At least not today.
- 20:53Speaker 3: And possibly a jumpstart towards an improbable entry into the
- 20:58Speaker 3: college football playoff because you beat a ranked team, a
- 21:02Speaker 3: power four ranked team, First game of the season as
- 21:05Speaker 3: a group of six team. That's what you're thinking, regardless
- 21:07Speaker 3: of your realistic expectations for the rest of the schedule.
- 21:10Speaker 2: More importantly for them, they have realistic expectations to be
- 21:14Speaker 2: a Mac champion.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Win the, win your conference.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 2: And if they win their conference, if they, I mean,
- 21:20Speaker 2: Western Michigan thinks that they are the 2005 Boise state
- 21:25Speaker 2: Broncos or the 2004 Utah Utes, right? They think they
- 21:29Speaker 2: have that kind of a team right now. You look
- 21:31Speaker 2: at them on paper, they returned a bunch of production.
- 21:34Speaker 2: They did not lose a bunch of guys to the
- 21:36Speaker 2: transfer portal that maybe they quote unquote would have or
- 21:39Speaker 2: should have in normal circumstances.
- 21:42Speaker 1: And this was good. This was potentially, I mean, they
- 21:45Speaker 1: kind of earned it.
- 21:46Speaker 2: And the, the wild thing is every fan who watched
- 21:50Speaker 2: the sport and it goes back to what we're talking
- 21:53Speaker 2: about prioritizing college football or the NFL, every fan of
- 21:58Speaker 2: the sport in general feels like they've got an emotional
- 22:02Speaker 2: sense of the fact that Western Michigan came out of
- 22:04Speaker 2: that one as the actual winners. Whose stock are you buying?
- 22:09Speaker 2: After that game, you're buying Western Michigan stock. Whose are
- 22:12Speaker 2: you selling? You're selling Michigan's right. The official record book
- 22:15Speaker 2: as of today is going to show that Michigan won
- 22:17Speaker 2: that game.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And I think that is not going to be changed.
- 22:22Speaker 2: If you are the, this is kind of like all
- 22:25Speaker 2: of these players that fought for years and years and
- 22:28Speaker 2: years and years for the right to capitalize on name, image,
- 22:32Speaker 2: and likeness, the Ed O'Bannon's of the world and the,
- 22:36Speaker 2: the Jeremy blooms of the world. These guys fought this
- 22:41Speaker 2: battle in the dark for decades. And now today's players
- 22:45Speaker 2: are the ones that get to benefit from it. So
- 22:49Speaker 2: there's a sense of justice like, oh yeah, okay, what
- 22:53Speaker 2: is correct is finally being done. But there's also a
- 22:55Speaker 2: sense of injustice because they're like, wait, this rule change
- 22:59Speaker 2: doesn't help me.
- 23:02Speaker 1: This fix does not help me.
- 23:05Speaker 2: That's what Western Michigan is looking at right now with
- 23:09Speaker 2: this NCAA course correction. I want to clarify for everyone
- 23:13Speaker 2: that That the thing that totally screwed over this particular school,
- 23:17Speaker 2: this particular athletic program, this particular football team, and all
- 23:21Speaker 2: the individuals on it and involved with it, they got jobbed.
- 23:26Speaker 2: We acknowledge that. So make sure you don't ever job
- 23:30Speaker 2: anybody again.
- 23:31Speaker 4: All right?
- 23:32Speaker 2: Western Michigan, thank you for being the example. That doesn't
- 23:36Speaker 2: help Western Michigan. And the only reason I even care
- 23:40Speaker 2: is because you can't forget where you came from. Western
- 23:46Speaker 2: Michigan is a mid-major conference contender, potential champion, premier program.
- 23:55Speaker 2: The same way that Utah was in the Mountain West
- 23:58Speaker 2: for a long time, the same way that BYU was
- 24:02Speaker 2: in the Mountain West for a long time, the same
- 24:04Speaker 2: way that TCU was, the same way that Boise State
- 24:07Speaker 2: had to kind of like climb the ladder to finally
- 24:11Speaker 2: got the respect they deserve. And by the way, for Boise,
- 24:14Speaker 2: because of their small population, they are never going to
- 24:17Speaker 2: get the same respect that TCU, Utah, and BYU have
- 24:21Speaker 2: been able to climb into the picture and get themselves.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Western Michigan is like, Hey, that remember when we were
- 24:29Speaker 2: there 25 years ago, can you imagine If in 2004,
- 24:33Speaker 2: starting the season against Texas, a and M the university
- 24:37Speaker 2: of Utah was in a situation where their magical season,
- 24:40Speaker 2: a and M got an extra second back and was
- 24:44Speaker 2: able to kick a field goal that they had previously
- 24:46Speaker 2: missed or something.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And that wins them the game.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Can you imagine the sense of injustice you would feel?
- 24:52Speaker 2: None of us would be over it this many years later,
- 24:56Speaker 2: Western Michigan. There are people at Western Michigan who are
- 25:00Speaker 2: going to be like, Lying in bed, surrounded by their families.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Grandson is there holding the hand. Grandpa, what are your
- 25:14Speaker 2: last words.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Before you.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Exit this place, this cruel, cruel world? And grandpa's going
- 25:23Speaker 2: to pull the oxygen down off of his mouth, that
- 25:25Speaker 2: little mask. And everyone's going to lean in real close
- 25:28Speaker 2: to hear the words. And grandpa's going to be like.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We deserve that win against Michigan. I hate the Wolverines.
- 25:39Speaker 2: There's going to be people who never get over this, right?
- 25:42Speaker 2: The NCAA world is just like, ah, yeah, we got
- 25:45Speaker 2: it wrong. Whoopsie daisy. This is all of those NBA basketball. Oh,
- 25:51Speaker 2: a foul should have been called here. When major league
- 25:54Speaker 2: baseball comes back and they're just like, actually, that was
- 25:57Speaker 2: a fair ball instead of a foul ball. When they
- 25:59Speaker 2: come back with the referee corrections and, professional sports. This
- 26:04Speaker 2: is that on steroids. So this could be one of
- 26:07Speaker 2: those things that could be the straw that breaks the
- 26:11Speaker 2: camel's back for some folks who have been clinging on
- 26:14Speaker 2: by their fingernails to their love of college sports, the
- 26:17Speaker 2: love of college football. I could fully understand. Some people
- 26:20Speaker 2: be like, ah, it's too much. I can't it's over.
- 26:25Speaker 2: If we're just going to protect the blue bloods from
- 26:28Speaker 2: being upset, which is one of the great things in
- 26:30Speaker 2: college sports is I'm going to go be a fan
- 26:34Speaker 2: of professional sports because at least in that case, when
- 26:37Speaker 2: a grave injustice is done like this, the players union
- 26:41Speaker 2: can file some sort of a grievance or an owner
- 26:45Speaker 2: can come out with some sort of like motion for
- 26:49Speaker 2: his peers.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And maybe we'll see something fixed.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I could see this being one of those issues where
- 26:55Speaker 2: people like, I don't want, I'm not doing it anymore.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I'm not there yet.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Because, honestly, this Michigan thing just gave me a lot
- 27:04Speaker 2: to talk about on the show. But I could see
- 27:07Speaker 2: why it would be corrosive to folks.
- 27:10Speaker 3: So what you brought up about how much that game
- 27:16Speaker 3: and the outcome of that game means to Western Michigan
- 27:18Speaker 3: and its fan base. Because they're the group of six team,
- 27:22Speaker 3: not the college football blue blood power four team. And
- 27:27Speaker 3: our roots here. Whether you're a BYU fan or a
- 27:30Speaker 3: Utah fan, you were that for a very long time.
- 27:34Speaker 3: You were a really good team who was trying to
- 27:38Speaker 3: punch higher at these BCS back in the day, power
- 27:43Speaker 3: level teams now. So you remember where your roots are, right?
- 27:49Speaker 3: Isn't it ironic that Kyle Whittingham....
- 27:52Speaker 1: Was the head coach of the blue blood team in that,
- 27:56Speaker 1: in that context, I actually.
- 27:57Speaker 2: So I, again, people don't like hearing me say positive
- 28:00Speaker 2: things about Kyle Whittingham.
- 28:01Speaker 1: So there's a certain contingent of people who don't like.
- 28:04Speaker 2: That, but Kyle Whittingham on Saturday night, what we watched
- 28:08Speaker 2: was a person put in an absolutely impossible situation. Now
- 28:13Speaker 2: maybe by his own decisions and maybe by his own
- 28:15Speaker 2: failures with coaching this Michigan team and getting them prepared, whatever,
- 28:20Speaker 2: I'm not here for that. We're not Michigan radio, but
- 28:24Speaker 2: we watched that man.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Lamenting a loss. We watched it.
- 28:31Speaker 2: He was doing his thing where he pinches the bridge
- 28:33Speaker 2: of the nose where he's just, I can't believe this
- 28:36Speaker 2: is happening.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Yelling things at his sideline. Like what is going on?
- 28:41Speaker 2: Then we watched that same man be given something that
- 28:45Speaker 2: never in his career has anyone ever given him or
- 28:48Speaker 2: any other coach. Like he's supposed to be the scrappy
- 28:53Speaker 2: underdog type that just pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You get what you have because you work for it
- 28:58Speaker 2: kind of guy. And then somebody came to him and said, actually,
- 29:02Speaker 2: that's not how it works here at Michigan. I know
- 29:06Speaker 2: that's how you got here, but here's what we're going
- 29:08Speaker 2: to do.
- 29:08Speaker 1: All right. Congratulations, coach. You don't have to do that anymore.
- 29:11Speaker 2: You know, those hundred dollar handshakes that people have been
- 29:14Speaker 2: doing in the sec since time immemorial. And when you
- 29:18Speaker 2: were a player at BYU, you were like, wouldn't it
- 29:19Speaker 2: be nice to get those hundred dollar handshakes that the
- 29:22Speaker 2: guys at Alabama get? Well, I'm going to give you one.
- 29:25Speaker 2: It's happening right here. And you're in your sixties now,
- 29:28Speaker 2: and you have a fully fleshed out sense of what
- 29:31Speaker 2: is right and what is wrong.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And guess what? You're going to be on the wrong
- 29:34Speaker 1: side of this one. There you go, coach. Isn't that great?
- 29:38Speaker 1: Congratulations on the win.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Win.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And he's got, he's got to be like, Oh sweet. Oh,
- 29:43Speaker 1: I get a win. Now the pollsters didn't treat it
- 29:46Speaker 1: that way.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Michigan with the most precipitous drop after a win tied
- 29:50Speaker 2: for the most precipitous drop after a win in the
- 29:52Speaker 2: history of the AP poll. They're treating it like a loss.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I think the college football playoff committee should treat it
- 29:58Speaker 2: like a loss. Now the NCAA without actually overturning it
- 30:01Speaker 2: to a loss is saying, guys, guess what? The rules
- 30:04Speaker 2: that we're going to adopt. I want to make sure
- 30:06Speaker 2: all of you know is our official stance. should have
- 30:09Speaker 2: given that as a loss to Michigan and Kyle Whittingham,
- 30:13Speaker 2: the guy whose entire message is antithetical to all of
- 30:19Speaker 2: this is sitting there as the beneficiary of it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: It is the most tragically.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Ironic and terrible thing that we have seen in college football.
- 30:29Speaker 1: And that is why the soap opera is undefeated.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And that is why on my own Twitter poll, when
- 30:34Speaker 2: I say, what do I prioritize watching NFL football? college
- 30:38Speaker 2: football or truly, truly, truly. Do you, do you prioritize
- 30:41Speaker 2: both equally for me? It's college football because this doesn't
- 30:44Speaker 2: happen in the NFL. And if it did right, if
- 30:47Speaker 2: the Cowboys were given an extra second back on the clock, they'd.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Be like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 30:53Speaker 1: This is, we have this.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Written in the rule book, the NFL rule book section
- 30:59Speaker 2: 74 subheading five.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Clause H this is what happens here.
- 31:05Speaker 2: It's too controlled for something like this to happen at
- 31:09Speaker 2: the professional level, the chaos at the college football level,
- 31:12Speaker 2: which is most of the time, glorious and wonderful sometimes
- 31:15Speaker 2: gets a little bit ugly. And the fact there's just
- 31:18Speaker 2: such poetic justice or injustice that it happened in the
- 31:23Speaker 2: first game that our guy was at the university of Michigan, where.
- 31:28Speaker 1: He is a foreigner. He is like, they turned on
- 31:31Speaker 1: him instantly.
- 31:34Speaker 2: All of those Michigan fans that at first were like,
- 31:36Speaker 2: why are we hiring this old coach? Then they fell
- 31:39Speaker 2: in love with him because he says all the right things.
- 31:41Speaker 2: He does all the right things. They're like, Oh, wait
- 31:42Speaker 2: a second.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I went back. I watched Utah football.
- 31:45Speaker 2: This is a hard nose, scrappy type of team punch
- 31:47Speaker 2: you in the mouth, dominated in the trenches type of team.
- 31:50Speaker 1: All right, cool. Everybody jumps on. They climb onto the
- 31:53Speaker 1: bandwagon like rats. avoiding drowning. They all climbed on.
- 31:57Speaker 2: And then as soon as things got bad and before
- 32:00Speaker 2: this even happened, as soon as like halfway through the
- 32:02Speaker 2: Western Michigan game, they're already jumping off. And now he
- 32:06Speaker 2: is a stranger in a foreign land. And they're like,
- 32:08Speaker 2: you are not one of us clearly. And we hate you.
- 32:13Speaker 1: What a wild time undefeated college football and its drama.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Thank you. NCAA for the clarification.
- 32:22Speaker 2: That doesn't help Western Michigan or the actual integrity of
- 32:25Speaker 2: the game really at all. Sammy Moore is going to
- 32:29Speaker 2: join us next for a Ute Zone Wednesday. It's the
- 32:32Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. You're
- 32:40Speaker 2: tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet
- 32:43Speaker 2: studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 32:50Speaker 6: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 33:03Speaker 2: It is a Ute Zone Wednesday, which means we talk
- 33:05Speaker 2: football with the folks from Ute Zone. Today, we are
- 33:08Speaker 2: lucky enough to welcome Sammy Mora, who gets an extra
- 33:11Speaker 2: second whenever she asks.
- 33:12Speaker 1: For one, all right? Wants a mulligan on a final play,
- 33:15Speaker 1: you give it to Sammy Mora. Sammy, welcome to the show.
- 33:17Speaker 1: How are you?
- 33:19Speaker 7: I'm doing good. I was seeing things are having me.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I'm going to, I'm going to bring back and regurgitate
- 33:24Speaker 2: a question from yesterday for you. Cause I feel like
- 33:26Speaker 2: you're the type of person will come up with a
- 33:28Speaker 2: really good answer for us. If you could take one
- 33:31Speaker 2: game deciding play or potentially game deciding play in Utah
- 33:34Speaker 2: football history, and you could go back and replay it
- 33:37Speaker 2: like Michigan got a chance to do on a fail
- 33:40Speaker 2: Mary that turned into a bail Mary.
- 33:43Speaker 1: What play are you replaying?
- 33:46Speaker 7: Can we go back to the 2024 Utah BYU game
- 33:51Speaker 7: and replay that holding call that Zamiya Vaughn got called for?
- 33:54Speaker 2: If that's the one you want, then absolutely yes.
- 33:59Speaker 7: Because if that holding call doesn't get called, correct me
- 34:03Speaker 7: if I'm wrong, Utah wins that game then.
- 34:05Speaker 4: Correct.
- 34:07Speaker 7: So yeah, let's go back and do that. That's the
- 34:09Speaker 7: first thing that can pop into my mind. And I
- 34:11Speaker 7: can think about if you want, if you give me
- 34:14Speaker 7: like two or three days to fully process it, I
- 34:16Speaker 7: can probably come up with a different answer, but off
- 34:19Speaker 7: the top of my brain, that's probably the one I
- 34:20Speaker 7: would go with right now.
- 34:24Speaker 1: All right. I think that's a really good answer.
- 34:25Speaker 2: We got a couple of those similar answers yesterday when
- 34:29Speaker 2: I put it out there on Twitter and on the
- 34:30Speaker 2: text line, 877-353-0700. If you want to, if you want
- 34:32Speaker 2: to join Sammy and you want to, to put in
- 34:37Speaker 2: the day late response.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That's great.
- 34:40Speaker 2: We've had a chance to talk about what we expected
- 34:43Speaker 2: from Utah football, what we thought the offense was going
- 34:46Speaker 2: to look like, what we thought the defense was.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Going to look like.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Now we have at least one version, one game sample
- 34:51Speaker 2: size to judge what this team actually is. What was
- 34:56Speaker 2: your first blush reaction to Utah football against Idaho?
- 35:01Speaker 7: I'm finally glad that, you know, we could see and
- 35:05Speaker 7: talk about that package with Bird and Devin at the
- 35:07Speaker 7: same time on the field. Because I know that, I
- 35:10Speaker 7: don't know if you were at the spring practice, but
- 35:11Speaker 7: there was a couple of spring practices where there were
- 35:14Speaker 7: that package that they ran, that play that they ran,
- 35:16Speaker 7: we saw during the spring. So that's been something we've
- 35:18Speaker 7: been kind of sitting on. So I'm glad I can
- 35:21Speaker 7: finally talk about that because that... was one of the
- 35:23Speaker 7: things that I was so excited to see how it
- 35:26Speaker 7: actually would turn out on the field. And yeah, it
- 35:28Speaker 7: was against Idaho. I need to see how this team
- 35:32Speaker 7: responds to a team that's not an FCS team. But
- 35:36Speaker 7: from the first part, I think that's something that I'm
- 35:38Speaker 7: excited about. Defensively, Colton Swan called a very aggressive game. Like,
- 35:44Speaker 7: super aggressive like it was I thought I think a
- 35:46Speaker 7: lot of us expect them to just be in base
- 35:48Speaker 7: defense for most of it but like the amount of
- 35:50Speaker 7: blitzes and pressures he threw last week was was a
- 35:54Speaker 7: really high number and honestly was a slightly surprising to
- 35:57Speaker 7: me at least so we'll see if that's how Colton
- 36:00Speaker 7: continues to call games or if that was just something
- 36:02Speaker 7: to put on tape so that Arkansas is slightly confused
- 36:05Speaker 7: as to what is going to be happening on Saturday.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Okay, so we got several different iterations of the offensive line,
- 36:14Speaker 2: and we saw some really nice things. We also saw
- 36:18Speaker 2: some things that maybe made Utah fans question and concern,
- 36:21Speaker 2: and I'm all right with saying we still don't know.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Where do you stand on the offensive line play, which
- 36:28Speaker 2: was the number one question throughout the offseason?
- 36:32Speaker 7: Well, I think we got to realize that Keith Olsen
- 36:34Speaker 7: and Isaiah Garcia didn't play at all last Thursday. And
- 36:38Speaker 7: both of them are guys that we expect to see,
- 36:41Speaker 7: you know, in some sort of capacity this year. I mean,
- 36:44Speaker 7: Keith is someone that we over at Youth Zone have
- 36:47Speaker 7: talked a lot about as like one of those starting guards.
- 36:50Speaker 7: So to not have the two of them out there was,
- 36:52Speaker 7: it was kind of evident at times. And I think
- 36:55Speaker 7: that especially getting Keith back, hopefully this week, like Morgan
- 36:58Speaker 7: Scali said, that should sure up that offensive line. Like,
- 37:01Speaker 7: I don't have any, major qualms about the offensive line
- 37:05Speaker 7: like yeah there were some issues there were some plays
- 37:07Speaker 7: that weren't great there were some series that were a
- 37:09Speaker 7: little bit questionable but for the most part I'm not
- 37:12Speaker 7: like it's not keeping me up at night because I
- 37:15Speaker 7: think that they have the guys I think it was
- 37:17Speaker 7: just a matter of you know two of your key
- 37:19Speaker 7: pieces were out last week and you you you skated
- 37:22Speaker 7: away with a win without even needing them like that's
- 37:26Speaker 7: something also I think that it says about this offensive
- 37:28Speaker 7: line that you were able to roll a true freshman
- 37:30Speaker 7: like Kelvin Obot out there. And, you know, he played
- 37:32Speaker 7: a lot of snaps and he had some good moments.
- 37:34Speaker 7: He had some bad moments, but again, true freshmen, you
- 37:37Speaker 7: need to get in those reps and sink them into
- 37:38Speaker 7: him as early as possible. But with he's an Ike
- 37:42Speaker 7: back this week, I think that should sure things up.
- 37:44Speaker 7: And I, I, you know, Morgan said that he doesn't
- 37:46Speaker 7: have a starting offensive line set right now. I think
- 37:49Speaker 7: we both know that he probably knows who is starting
- 37:51Speaker 7: five are, but he's just not going to give up
- 37:53Speaker 7: that information right now.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Well, I really am curious as to whether the starting
- 37:58Speaker 2: five against Arkansas and even against Utah State is the
- 38:03Speaker 2: same one against like Iowa State or Kansas, because I
- 38:08Speaker 2: trust this coaching staff and the fact that fluidity is
- 38:12Speaker 2: necessary when you have so many new pieces on an
- 38:15Speaker 2: offensive line. And ultimately, you got to get the best
- 38:18Speaker 2: five out there, regardless of what position they're playing. I
- 38:21Speaker 2: think the only one that you really don't interchange at
- 38:23Speaker 2: all His big out at center, I think he's firmly
- 38:26Speaker 2: established himself, and that's probably where you're going to have
- 38:29Speaker 2: to keep him. But it's a work in progress that
- 38:33Speaker 2: I guess the next question is, how much progress do
- 38:36Speaker 2: we need to see from that unit before Arkansas? Because
- 38:38Speaker 2: it is a significant step up in the physicality, the size,
- 38:42Speaker 2: the speed that they're going to see this Saturday as
- 38:45Speaker 2: opposed to last Thursday.
- 38:47Speaker 7: Well, I think, like I said, getting Keith back specifically,
- 38:51Speaker 7: I think, is going to give this offensive line some
- 38:54Speaker 7: credit and some boost. Because, like, I hear Dan Sorensen,
- 38:58Speaker 7: our publisher, he talked to Toa Mowii before the season,
- 39:02Speaker 7: and Toa made a good point that This starting offensive line,
- 39:06Speaker 7: the one that we've all projected of Zerway, Toa, Al,
- 39:12Speaker 7: and Keith, those four specifically, they have been the twos
- 39:16Speaker 7: for the last two years. So the four of them
- 39:19Speaker 7: specifically have played a lot of football together, and they've
- 39:22Speaker 7: had a lot of experience together, especially last year when
- 39:25Speaker 7: Utah was blowing out opponents in the middle of the
- 39:27Speaker 7: third quarter, and so they were able to put those
- 39:29Speaker 7: guys in. So the communication and the camaraderie and the
- 39:33Speaker 7: chemistry is all there with those four. It's how does
- 39:36Speaker 7: said Jefferson factor into that? How is his communication with
- 39:40Speaker 7: the other four? Because said played the most snaps of
- 39:43Speaker 7: any offensive lineman last week. And, again, had some good moments,
- 39:47Speaker 7: had some not-so-great moments. But I think with those four
- 39:49Speaker 7: together of Harrison, Williams, Moeai, and Olsen, that's a really
- 39:55Speaker 7: good starting point for this offensive line. I don't have
- 39:58Speaker 7: any qualms or concerns with those four. So I think
- 40:01Speaker 7: the progress will be seen once we get Keith back
- 40:03Speaker 7: out there. With Keith out there, I think this offensive
- 40:06Speaker 7: line is a lot better than they were last week.
- 40:09Speaker 7: Keith is one of the, we call him super Keith
- 40:12Speaker 7: over on you zone, just because of how many different
- 40:14Speaker 7: things he can do, how many different positions he can play.
- 40:17Speaker 7: He's a very talented offensive lineman. So I think a
- 40:20Speaker 7: lot of the issues, at least in my opinions, I
- 40:22Speaker 7: think will be solved this week.
- 40:23Speaker 4: Once you get Keith back out.
- 40:24Speaker 2: There, Sammy Moore from youth zone is our guest here
- 40:27Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell show, talking all things, Utah football.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Another beautiful thing about this Idaho game is we, we
- 40:35Speaker 2: got to see kind of all the offensive weapons on
- 40:38Speaker 2: display and, Everyone got touches. Even Bam comes in and
- 40:42Speaker 2: ends up being the leading rusher on seven carries. I mean,
- 40:45Speaker 2: they went deep into the depth chart to make sure
- 40:49Speaker 2: these people that may or may not factor in as
- 40:51Speaker 2: the season progresses all got at least a little bit
- 40:54Speaker 2: of shine.
- 40:55Speaker 1: What was your favorite? Who do you think impressed the most?
- 41:00Speaker 7: LaMarcus Bell, that kid is one of my... I talk
- 41:04Speaker 7: to him a lot through his recruiting process and stuff,
- 41:06Speaker 7: and he's just one of those kids that you want
- 41:09Speaker 7: to root for and you want to see him have success.
- 41:12Speaker 7: He's just such an overall great guy, great running back.
- 41:15Speaker 7: He's taken it to heart, really, to improve his game,
- 41:18Speaker 7: get better as a pass catcher, get better as... a
- 41:21Speaker 7: blocker do all the things that he needs to do
- 41:24Speaker 7: to see time in that rotation so I was very
- 41:26Speaker 7: excited about seeing someone like Bam have that moment yeah
- 41:29Speaker 7: it was in the fourth quarter but like he still
- 41:32Speaker 7: you know like you said led the team in rushing
- 41:33Speaker 7: scored his first career touchdown on one of his first
- 41:35Speaker 7: few carries as a Ute like I that kid is
- 41:39Speaker 7: one of those kids that I just I hope nothing
- 41:41Speaker 7: but the best for him in his career I would
- 41:44Speaker 7: also highlight Monica Arvalo like another one that We know
- 41:48Speaker 7: what he can do on punt returns and stuff like that,
- 41:50Speaker 7: but when he's actually out there as a receiver, you
- 41:52Speaker 7: get to truly see how dynamic of a guy he is.
- 41:55Speaker 7: He runs such crisp routes. He has great hands. And
- 42:00Speaker 7: I think that that viral pass from Bird to him
- 42:03Speaker 7: was just a small glimpse of what Mauna can really do.
- 42:06Speaker 7: And so those are the two for me that I
- 42:08Speaker 7: think I was most excited about as under-the-radar guys. Everyone
- 42:12Speaker 7: else that we saw, like you saw Creed, you saw.
- 42:17Speaker 7: Ricky Johnson, you saw Braden Pagan, all those guys were
- 42:20Speaker 7: the characters we expected to see. But for Bam and
- 42:23Speaker 7: for Mana to have the games that they had, it
- 42:27Speaker 7: was really good to see.
- 42:28Speaker 2: The most concerning thing that I saw in the game
- 42:30Speaker 2: was Idaho putting together a real big boy drive on
- 42:35Speaker 2: either a starting defense or an actual who you're going
- 42:41Speaker 2: to play alongside your starters, rotational level defense for this
- 42:44Speaker 2: Utah football team. And I know the game is pretty
- 42:47Speaker 2: much already in hand at that point, but it's the
- 42:50Speaker 2: first game of the season.
- 42:51Speaker 1: There's no excuses.
- 42:52Speaker 2: You're not supposed to give up that kind of production
- 42:55Speaker 2: to an FCS team.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Is that cause for concern or is that a blip
- 43:00Speaker 1: on the radar?
- 43:02Speaker 7: I honestly think it's a blip because if, if Nate
- 43:05Speaker 7: Tillman makes that tackle in the end zone, they don't
- 43:06Speaker 7: have that drive. Like if he can wrap up on
- 43:09Speaker 7: that sack, you're in a safety and you're even more
- 43:13Speaker 7: in a, like you're, you're, they're not scoring 14 points,
- 43:15Speaker 7: only scoring seven. So I think right now I'm just
- 43:19Speaker 7: going to, I'm going to, I'm going to put that
- 43:20Speaker 7: off as a blip. If it's something that we continue
- 43:22Speaker 7: to see, then yeah, it might be a point for concern,
- 43:25Speaker 7: but in my perspective, yeah, Tilly just needs to wrap
- 43:29Speaker 7: up on that. And then if he can, you know, that's,
- 43:31Speaker 7: we're not even having this conversation right now.
- 43:35Speaker 1: What scares you most about the Arkansas matchup, if anything?
- 43:42Speaker 7: I honestly, if I have to guess, if I have
- 43:45Speaker 7: to say one thing, it's their, I want to say
- 43:50Speaker 7: like their offensive line had some moments where they looked good,
- 43:52Speaker 7: but they also had some moments where they looked bad.
- 43:56Speaker 7: Their running back room is really good. I just want
- 43:58Speaker 7: to see what this run defense looks like. I know
- 44:00Speaker 7: that Idaho, you held Idaho to like a hundred yards,
- 44:03Speaker 7: give or take, but that's Idaho. Like this is an
- 44:06Speaker 7: actual SEC team. This is a team with a pulse
- 44:09Speaker 7: as much as, You know, their Arkansas fan base is
- 44:12Speaker 7: not too bought in right now, but they're still an
- 44:16Speaker 7: SEC team.
- 44:16Speaker 4: They still have.
- 44:17Speaker 7: High-level guys that can play at the next level. So
- 44:19Speaker 7: I just want to see truly what this run defense
- 44:21Speaker 7: and this defensive tackle rotation looks like because there were
- 44:24Speaker 7: guys playing last week that I was kind of shocked
- 44:27Speaker 7: to see. Like Mike Pacioli, like good for him for
- 44:29Speaker 7: getting into the rotation. He was not someone on my
- 44:31Speaker 7: radar that I thought was going to play. You had
- 44:33Speaker 7: semi-tall London CNA motor blocker playing as well. Like that's again,
- 44:38Speaker 7: not something I expected to see. So I want to
- 44:40Speaker 7: see what the true like dry Carson defensive tackle room
- 44:45Speaker 7: looks like against this running back room at Arkansas this week. That's,
- 44:48Speaker 7: that's my big thing.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It is Eric Weddle week.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Eric Weddle is going to be inducted into the ring
- 44:54Speaker 2: of honor and immortalized on the side of rice echo stadium.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Obviously very deserved for a guy who's all everything. Uh,
- 45:01Speaker 2: you're a lot younger than I am, right? So Eric
- 45:03Speaker 2: is a peer of mine. You came in after he
- 45:06Speaker 2: had already played his, uh, his ball at the university
- 45:09Speaker 2: of Utah. So like your sense of what Eric Weddle is,
- 45:13Speaker 2: what he means to this program, et cetera.
- 45:16Speaker 7: Well, I think for me, like I knew I've known
- 45:19Speaker 7: about Eric and just what his legacy was ever since
- 45:22Speaker 7: I was little. Like I was around and I was
- 45:26Speaker 7: watching Eric play when I was a little kid. But
- 45:29Speaker 7: like I think me more so I know Eric as
- 45:33Speaker 7: an NFL star and just how he was unabashedly always pro-Utah.
- 45:38Speaker 7: He was always praising Utah. He was always repping the team,
- 45:41Speaker 7: even if, like, during those five and seven years or
- 45:44Speaker 7: during those down moments, he was always repping the U.
- 45:46Speaker 7: And I think, for me, the biggest thing is just
- 45:49Speaker 7: how much of an ambassador for the university he's been.
- 45:52Speaker 7: I think that would be the big thing that stands
- 45:54Speaker 7: out about Eric for me. Like, obviously, I've gone back
- 45:57Speaker 7: and watched his highlights from when he played at Utah. Like,
- 45:59Speaker 7: everyone's done that. But for someone who is not... who
- 46:03Speaker 7: wasn't very... tuned in when he was playing. Like I
- 46:07Speaker 7: was like, wait, that was like 2004, 2005. It was
- 46:09Speaker 7: when he played. Like I was like five or six
- 46:13Speaker 7: when he was playing.
- 46:14Speaker 5: Yes.
- 46:14Speaker 2: You could be forgiven for not having like core memories
- 46:17Speaker 2: of what he.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Did, you know?
- 46:19Speaker 7: Oh yeah.
- 46:20Speaker 5: 100%.
- 46:20Speaker 7: So I think that for me, like, it's more of just,
- 46:22Speaker 7: I know Eric of, as the NFL star, I know
- 46:25Speaker 7: him just being so pro Utah and just, just one
- 46:28Speaker 7: of the biggest cheerleaders, even when he left.
- 46:33Speaker 1: The players.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Today's players, the guys on this team, uh, how aware
- 46:38Speaker 2: do you think they are of like his actual playing prowess?
- 46:42Speaker 2: I mean, he, he, he was in the NFL all
- 46:45Speaker 2: through these guys, you know, youth and adolescents and things
- 46:48Speaker 2: like that. So I'm sure they're pretty aware of him
- 46:50Speaker 2: as an NFL player, but how many of these guys
- 46:52Speaker 2: do you think are like fully aware of what he
- 46:54Speaker 2: was as a youth?
- 46:55Speaker 1: And how many do you think have actually seen those highlights?
- 46:58Speaker 7: I think if you're one room specifically knows what Eric's about,
- 47:02Speaker 7: it's probably the Utah safety room. Like I think just
- 47:05Speaker 7: because Odom coached Eric, um, Morgan obviously was with Eric
- 47:10Speaker 7: throughout the years when, and he was obviously over the
- 47:13Speaker 7: safe majority of these safeties last year as well. So
- 47:16Speaker 7: I want to say the safety room probably has the
- 47:18Speaker 7: biggest grasp, but I think the defense as a whole
- 47:21Speaker 7: should also know about him just because again, Morgan's connection
- 47:25Speaker 7: to Eric and all those things. But I don't, again,
- 47:28Speaker 7: they're there and these guys are younger than me. So
- 47:30Speaker 7: I don't truly know what they know about him as well.
- 47:32Speaker 7: So it's one of those things that's kind of interesting
- 47:34Speaker 7: to see how, how different generations react to these legends.
- 47:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Back to Utah versus Arkansas.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Of course, the Weddell ceremony will be part of it,
- 47:44Speaker 2: but the real feature is the game itself. Do you
- 47:47Speaker 2: have a prediction on what this final score looks like?
- 47:50Speaker 7: Let me, I think, what did I tell that? I
- 47:52Speaker 7: told our Arkansas on three team, I gave them a
- 47:55Speaker 7: score prediction. I think I said like 20, I think
- 47:59Speaker 7: I said like 34, I want to say 34, 21, Utah.
- 48:03Speaker 7: I want to say it was something like that. It
- 48:04Speaker 7: was like, I think Utah's going to win it. Oh,
- 48:09Speaker 7: it's 38-21. I think Utah's going to win it. I
- 48:12Speaker 7: don't think this is going to be a super high
- 48:14Speaker 7: scoring game. I think that both teams are going to
- 48:16Speaker 7: get their shots in. They're both going to score. There's
- 48:18Speaker 7: going to be some drives that are going to cause
- 48:20Speaker 7: panic for the Utah fans on both sides of the ball.
- 48:24Speaker 7: But I think that just... Again, game two, we still
- 48:28Speaker 7: have some growing pains that we need to go through
- 48:29Speaker 7: before we hit the season. It's a marathon, not a
- 48:32Speaker 7: sprint of a season. So I have 38-21. I think
- 48:36Speaker 7: Utah pulls it out. I just think that there's going
- 48:38Speaker 7: to be like at least one or two Arkansas drives
- 48:40Speaker 7: that are kind of questionable that fans kind of panic about.
- 48:43Speaker 1: The NFL is back tonight. How much NFL do you watch?
- 48:47Speaker 8: Um.
- 48:48Speaker 7: I watch a decent amount. I'm a Buccaneers fan, so
- 48:51Speaker 7: it's kind of hard for me to watch my team frequently,
- 48:54Speaker 7: but I do watch it. I usually camp out on
- 48:58Speaker 7: the couch on Sundays and just watch as many games
- 49:00Speaker 7: as possible.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Congratulations on Baker Mayfield's new contract.
- 49:05Speaker 4: I guess. Thank you.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I'm very happy.
- 49:07Speaker 7: My two goals this off season were Baker and Vita
- 49:09Speaker 7: and both of them are staying. So I am not
- 49:12Speaker 7: in much pain. I do still think that Todd Bowles
- 49:15Speaker 7: needs to go, but at least Baker and Vita are staying.
- 49:17Speaker 7: So I will take it.
- 49:18Speaker 5: All right.
- 49:19Speaker 1: We'll take it for you. Sammy, you're the best. See
- 49:21Speaker 1: you up there on Saturday.
- 49:22Speaker 4: Okay.
- 49:23Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 49:23Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 49:23Speaker 7: I'll see you on Saturday.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Sammy Mora from Ute zone on a Ute zone Wednesday.
- 49:28Speaker 2: They do great work over there with the on three
- 49:30Speaker 2: crew and. This Arkansas team, just for all of you
- 49:36Speaker 2: out there who are keeping score, this Arkansas team was
- 49:39Speaker 2: picked to finish last in the SEC. The PR headline
- 49:46Speaker 2: for Utah football is it's an SEC team. You can't
- 49:51Speaker 2: even let this game be close, is what I'm saying.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Because, yes, it's an SEC squad. Yes, they have some athletes.
- 49:57Speaker 2: But in a lot of people's estimation, this is the
- 50:00Speaker 2: worst that the SEC has to offer.
- 50:02Speaker 1: And if you're one of the best at.
- 50:03Speaker 10: It, You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the
- 50:11Speaker 10: Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 50:30Speaker 2: We've got a very short segment here, so let me
- 50:32Speaker 2: take a little bit.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Of time to.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Ask a question.
- 50:37Speaker 2: I don't, I'm not going to pretend I'm a tennis expert.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I enjoy watching tennis. I'm a fan of tennis. I'm
- 50:43Speaker 2: a very casual fan of tennis. Last night, quarterfinal match
- 50:49Speaker 2: between Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz, who are two of, well,
- 50:54Speaker 2: Alcaraz is arguably the biggest men's star in tennis right now,
- 50:58Speaker 2: alongside Yannick Sinner. Shelton is a rising star, certainly. He's
- 51:02Speaker 2: a high-profile American player. who's part of a sports power couple.
- 51:06Speaker 2: There's a lot of reasons why the marketability of his
- 51:10Speaker 2: career is something that everyone involved in tennis is at
- 51:15Speaker 2: least paying some attention to. They played a marathon match
- 51:19Speaker 2: last night, those two in the quarterfinal of the U.S. Open,
- 51:22Speaker 2: that ended at 3.33 a.m.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Local time in New York City.
- 51:27Speaker 11: 3 33 AM for a four hour match.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Now that I get it, you got to play these
- 51:37Speaker 2: tournaments as they come.
- 51:39Speaker 1: If matches go long during the day.
- 51:41Speaker 2: There's only so many center court appointments that are available
- 51:44Speaker 2: and things like that. But this feels like one of
- 51:48Speaker 2: those situations where you are really, really pushing it in
- 51:53Speaker 2: terms of the kind of, uh, loyalty. You want a
- 51:57Speaker 2: fan base to show and to Shelton's credit, he immediately
- 52:01Speaker 2: after winning the match and advancing, he immediately gave credit
- 52:05Speaker 2: to the fans, especially the ones that had said and
- 52:08Speaker 2: given him his USA chance all the way.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Through into the wee wee wee hours of the morning.
- 52:13Speaker 2: This guy played an Epic match against one of the
- 52:17Speaker 2: world's best and sneaks out a victory on, by the way, 150,
- 52:20Speaker 2: almost 150 mile an hour serve doing that. when it's
- 52:25Speaker 2: three 30 in the morning, there's gotta be some kind
- 52:28Speaker 2: of sports science conversation involved here because nobody is preparing
- 52:34Speaker 2: their body to be at an optimal level of performance
- 52:38Speaker 2: at four in the morning effectively. So what a strange
- 52:43Speaker 2: and kind of obnoxious time to put two of the,
- 52:47Speaker 2: you know, the big draws for this U S open
- 52:50Speaker 2: so late at night. And then to have them go
- 52:51Speaker 2: all the way into the wee hours of the morning
- 52:53Speaker 2: and is for the U S open, I guess for now,
- 52:56Speaker 2: a blessing and a curse because very few people watched
- 53:00Speaker 2: it live or watch the conclusion of the match live. However,
- 53:05Speaker 2: it is record setting and now probably talked about even
- 53:08Speaker 2: more because of the fact that it is record setting
- 53:11Speaker 2: and no such thing as bad publicity, right? So the
- 53:14Speaker 2: fact that you could tune into the Dan Patrick show
- 53:17Speaker 2: this morning or rich eyes in this morning, or you're
- 53:20Speaker 2: listening to the Sean O'Connell show that usually doesn't give
- 53:22Speaker 2: you much on the U S open is And we're
- 53:24Speaker 2: talking about the fact that two of the best men
- 53:26Speaker 2: in the world were playing at 3 30 AM when
- 53:29Speaker 2: they should have been in bed.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Well, I guess that's kind of a win.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Maybe Speaker 4, yeah, I, I don't really get why
- 53:40Speaker 3: it's so late either OC because the first thing your
- 53:44Speaker 3: mind jumps to is like, well, they don't want to
- 53:46Speaker 3: conflict with football, but it was Tuesday night. So they
- 53:49Speaker 3: weren't conflicting with football. There's other there's other parts of
- 53:53Speaker 3: the U S open because they play every day. I
- 53:56Speaker 3: think they may have one or two off days, but
- 53:59Speaker 3: basically every day where, yeah, this past Saturday, you're going
- 54:03Speaker 3: up against college football. You're probably adjusting your best matches
- 54:09Speaker 3: according to the best games on the college football schedule
- 54:13Speaker 3: on Saturday. Maybe this coming, this coming weekend you got, well,
- 54:18Speaker 3: today you've got, NFL starting and tomorrow you have that too.
- 54:22Speaker 3: And then this weekend you got NFL and you got
- 54:24Speaker 3: college football again on Saturday, but Tuesday it's just you.
- 54:28Speaker 3: So you probably could have made this a seven o'clock
- 54:31Speaker 3: mountain time, nine o'clock Eastern instead of nine mountain time,
- 54:35Speaker 3: 11 Eastern start, but Hey, they are getting a lot
- 54:41Speaker 3: more extra publicity from it. I'm kind of sad that
- 54:44Speaker 3: it wasn't earlier because it sounds like it was a
- 54:46Speaker 3: heck of a match, but And I love me some
- 54:48Speaker 3: Carlos Alcaraz.
- 54:50Speaker 1: I would love to tune in myself, but.
- 54:53Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot of, there's plenty of noteworthy moments.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Alcaraz started by breaking serve and jumped out to a lead.
- 55:00Speaker 2: And then it caused Shelton to come roaring back a
- 55:03Speaker 2: little bit. At some point, if the highlights are to
- 55:06Speaker 2: be believed, Alcaraz was like vomiting into a towel. I
- 55:10Speaker 2: don't know if that was from exertion or an electrolyte imbalance,
- 55:13Speaker 2: or he's feeling sick or anything like that. But, there's
- 55:16Speaker 2: plenty of things that happened in this match that were
- 55:19Speaker 2: kind of notable moments that again, would have been topical
- 55:24Speaker 2: and conversational if it were being played in prime time.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:29Speaker 4: Sports.
- 55:29Speaker 2: One of the, one of the craziest things and have
- 55:31Speaker 2: in working for a sports organization now that is trying
- 55:35Speaker 2: to get like any modicum of attention, just any sliver
- 55:38Speaker 2: of publicity we can, because we're, you know, a distant
- 55:41Speaker 2: second place in the MMA race. It is so critically
- 55:49Speaker 2: important to put your best product on a channel at
- 55:54Speaker 2: a time when people are able to and willing to
- 55:59Speaker 2: watch it. Because there are very few fans who are
- 56:04Speaker 2: enthusiastic enough, who are big enough fans to kind of
- 56:08Speaker 2: like overcome the roadblocks.
- 56:11Speaker 5: Right?
- 56:11Speaker 1: It's why.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Sunday night football, the NFL is putting its best foot forward.
- 56:16Speaker 2: It's why Monday night football there. Most of the time
- 56:19Speaker 2: they're featuring the best stuff that they have. The NFL
- 56:22Speaker 2: is probably a bad example to use because the NFL
- 56:24Speaker 2: can get away with literally anything.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Now they can.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Bust out crappy color rush uniforms on a Thursday night
- 56:30Speaker 2: game where none of the starters even want to be
- 56:32Speaker 2: there on Amazon. And again, People are still watching it
- 56:37Speaker 2: enough that Amazon is willing to pay an absurd amount
- 56:39Speaker 2: of money for it, right?
- 56:41Speaker 3: Thursday match-ups have been the exception. It's not necessarily the
- 56:44Speaker 3: best match-ups.
- 56:45Speaker 2: We're kicking off an NFL season on a Wednesday night,
- 56:49Speaker 2: not because it's the optimal time for the NFL to
- 56:52Speaker 2: kick off.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Because they can. The NFL can do whatever it wants.
- 56:57Speaker 1: The U.S.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Open in tennis is not exactly in that spot, so
- 57:02Speaker 2: I imagine there are some phone calls today between the
- 57:07Speaker 2: biggest sponsors, the biggest kind of financial interest saying, why
- 57:12Speaker 2: did we put this match at a time where maybe
- 57:17Speaker 2: somebody in California stayed up to watch the whole thing,
- 57:20Speaker 2: but locally and on the East coast, which everyone gears
- 57:26Speaker 2: their broadcast for East coast primetime viewership, nobody on a
- 57:31Speaker 2: school night, work night, is staying up until 3.30 a.m.
- 57:34Speaker 2: unless they're in the Shelton family. Yeah, and here's the
- 57:38Speaker 2: other thing about it, OC.
- 57:39Speaker 3: The match before this that was actually in primetime, Francis
- 57:44Speaker 3: Tiafoe and is it Alex Michelson or Michelson, however you
- 57:49Speaker 3: say it there? Terrific five-set match, but that's the 11th-ranked player,
- 57:55Speaker 3: an American star now, Francis Tiafoe, but the 11th, ranked
- 58:00Speaker 3: player against an unranked player, unseated player, Ben Shelton.
- 58:04Speaker 2: And Carlos Alcaraz are both top 10. Ben Shelton is
- 58:07Speaker 2: the American star right now. And Carlos Alcaraz might be,
- 58:10Speaker 2: it's probably the biggest star in all of men's tennis
- 58:12Speaker 2: and all of tennis period. That matchup should have been your,
- 58:17Speaker 2: your primetime match. And then Tiafoe should have been the
- 58:20Speaker 2: one that went into wee hours in the morning. Like what,
- 58:22Speaker 2: what are we doing there? I, but I guess, you know,
- 58:25Speaker 2: you you're getting this publicity, I guess. So Tiafoe and
- 58:28Speaker 2: Shelton will square off on Friday in the semi-final. Do
- 58:32Speaker 2: you know the last time an American man won the
- 58:35Speaker 2: U S open is Roddick 2003, right? That is bananas.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Andy Roddick last one in 2003. Since then, it has
- 58:44Speaker 2: been anything but an American man winning the U S open.
- 58:47Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Mostly Federer Nadal.
- 58:50Speaker 3: And Djokovic and now Alcaraz and now Alcaraz who.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Got knocked off by Shelton in front of exactly 42
- 58:58Speaker 2: people last night, baby.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Let's go get your stuff together.
- 59:04Speaker 4: U S open.
- 59:05Speaker 1: All right.
- 59:05Speaker 2: We're over time to start our number two. We'll do
- 59:07Speaker 2: that next on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 59:09Speaker 1: It's ESPN. 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 59:14Speaker 10: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 59:17Speaker 10: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to.
- 59:20Speaker 8: OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 59:35Speaker 1: NFL season kicks off tonight.
- 59:37Speaker 2: The question is up on Twitter. As a football fan,
- 59:41Speaker 2: what do you prioritize? College football, NFL football.
- 59:45Speaker 1: Or tell the truth.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Is it equal for you? Do they hold equal weight
- 59:52Speaker 2: in your life as a sports fan?
- 59:54Speaker 1: And that means.
- 59:56Speaker 2: For me at least, if they're equal, it means that
- 59:58Speaker 2: you're scheduling your weekends just as much around watching your
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: 49ers as you are around watching your Utes. Now, I
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: don't think you have to go so far as to
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: try to attend every 49ers game like you probably do
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: with the Utes, but are you carving out time? Is
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: the NFL that big of a priority for you? Obviously, nationally,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: it's massive, and here in the United States, it has
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: become America's pastime. It is our number one sports product, definitively, Um,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: because we don't have a local team, I think that
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: alters things. It changes things a little bit here in
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: salt Lake city, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three zero 700.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: If you want to tell me your relationship with NFL
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: fandom relative to college football here on a Wednesday edition
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: of the show, by the way, Ari Temkin is going
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: to join us to start the one o'clock hour. We
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: still have the daily dump coming lots to get to
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: here midweek on the Sean O'Connell show college football right
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: now on the Twitter poll. For 67% of people is
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: the priority. The NFL right now by itself is less
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: than 5%, and then the must-watch for both is about
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: 28% of the people responding so far.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: So tell me how you feel about it.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: The 49er fan in me is getting less and less
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: enthusiastic about the approaching NFL season, although I'm curious to
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: see what the Australia game looks like against the Rams
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: for a couple of different reasons. I played at the MCG,
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: the Melbourne cricket grounds, which is a great venue.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: I've been there before.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: I've been to an Aussie rules football game at the MCG,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Richmond tigers versus car versus Carlton. I don't know what
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Carlton's mascot is. That's a, that's the, that would be
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: the deepest cut obscure mascot challenge. I could pull out
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: James Carlton, Aussie rules football.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: What is their mascot?
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: I want to say spiders probably because you said the
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: other team was Richmond and I know that's the Richmond spiders.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: So I'm going to go with spiders. It's not. Richmond's
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the tigers, by the way. Yeah, that's tigers.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: Tigers.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: What do we have here? I have to look it up. Elephants.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: It's a, this sucks. This is terrible.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: The official mascot of the Carlton football club. Is Captain
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Carlton and Navy Nina.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: So I don't. So they're not. Okay.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: So they're one of those. So this is Carlton Football Club.
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: The name is Carlton Football Club, not Carlton whatever mascot.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: So it follows the soccer international sports tradition.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I don't like that at all.
- 1:02:44Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Richmond Tigers. I guess they're called the Blues every now
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: and again. The Blues.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Because probably the color of their. Do they call them
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: kits in Aussie rules?
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Uh, back in the early days, they had a cockatoo
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: as their mascot.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Ooh, the Carlton cockatoos.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: And they call saying that on the radio, Carlton cocky.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: That's a terrible mascot. Cockatoos are so non-threatening. They're just
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: like pretty birds. Are they, are they one that they're
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: the white ones you can train to talk?
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: They like parrots that way.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: They're like parrots. That's what I thought. I don't like that. Anyway.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Isn't that, is it a cockatoo? That's one of the,
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: that's one of the villains in Rio.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: Correct. Correct.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Well done, James. Nice pull on obscure movie stuff.
- 1:03:32Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: My, my 49ers fandom is making me less enthusiastic about
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: the start of the NFL season. They will play on Thursday,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: the Australia game, Alfred Collins starting defensive tackle for the
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers tore his patellar tendon at.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Practice in Australia.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Two days before the game kicks off. He gets a
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: season ending season ending injury. He's already flown to Australia.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: I mean, that's gotta be among like worst timing for
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: season ending injuries. That's like right before the first season,
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: no matter if you're playing at home or, or anywhere
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: else domestically, It's got to be the worst, but it's
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: compounded by the fact that you've already flown 16 hours
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: to Australia, getting geared up to play this first-ever NFL
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: game in Australia. Maybe you aren't so psyched about having
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: to make that trip.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: Maybe you are.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: And then you tear your patellar out for the season
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: two days before.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: That's terrible. Okay, so.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: One silver lining here for.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: The San Francisco 49ers kicking off in Australia. Aaron Donald
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: has decided along with the LA Rams that he is
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: not going to play in this game. In fact, he
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: didn't even go to Australia, which is bananas to me.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: You get a guy to come out of retirement. You're
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: paying him 20 million bucks for the year. You're expecting
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: him to make you like this unstoppable defensive front. And
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: you're not asking him to play in the first game
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: against a division rival.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Who might challenge for the division. So the Rams, here's
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: something that.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: The 49ers, they're not going to get like an extra
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: draft pick out of this. They're not going to get
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: any incentive. The 49ers have been in Australia for over
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: a week. They're adjusting to the time. They flew out there.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: They're doing the thing, the outreach, the ambassadorship for the NFL.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: And They're going to all these events. They're talking to
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: the media.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: They're being laughed at by the Australian media because none
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: of the American professional athletes know a dang thing about Australia.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: And they're just, they're like endearing themselves to the Australian public.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: It's part of an international promotional effort, right? To do
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: these games overseas. The 49ers have leaned into it. And
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: I would also be saying this if it wasn't the 49ers.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: If it were like the Raiders or the Broncos or
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: the Chiefs, anyone except the Seahawks, I'd probably be giving
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: them credit for this. However, the Rams were given full
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: autonomy on their travel schedule when they decided to, when
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: they wanted to do this. The Rams left early this
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: morning to fly to Australia, which is about 16 hours.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: You can go direct from L.A.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: To Melbourne.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: I've taken that flight. It's a long flight. They're going
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: to land. They're going to be there for all of
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Thursday of Australian time Friday. They will play the game
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: and then they're going to fly home. So the Rams
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: are not only not doing any of the stuff like
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: the photo shoots, the outreach, the let's go to the zoo.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Let's try to find a kangaroo. Let's go on the
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: news station. Let's talk to the Australian media. Let's see
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: if we can get a couple more fans here. Not
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: only are the Rams not doing that, they're now not
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: bringing their best team because they're letting Aaron Donald stay home.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: The Rams and Sean McVay do not give a, you know,
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: what about the NFL is big picture incentive to be
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: doing these international games. He is just like, no, dude,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: my job is to win football games. I'm going to
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: get my guys there when I feel like getting them there.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I'm going to get them home when I feel like
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: getting them home. And we're going to do this our way.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: You could probably do that. If you're Sean McVay, you
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: could probably do that. If you're this version of the
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: LA Rams roster, maybe they just want to keep Puka
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Nakua out of trouble in the Australian streets. I have
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: no idea, but they're not going, they're on a plane
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: right now and they will be until.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: I don't know, like three this morning. Three tomorrow morning.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: Can I share a tidbit as to why that's even
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: more problematic from a league perspective? Remember when we were
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: talking about the global markets program, how each team is
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: assigned a country? Guess which one of the four teams, Australia,
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: which is assigned to Australia.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Is it the Rams? It's the Rams. Guess which one
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: of the teams is not assigned to Australia? The Niners?
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: The Niners. So the team. A team that's literally.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: Designated to be an ambassador of some sorts to Australian
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: fans of American football is like, yeah, we're not doing
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: any of that. But the team who's let's see what
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: the Niners, the Niners are assigned to Mexico, United Kingdom
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: and the United Arab Arab Emirates.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: I think that's the three. Nowhere near Australia. And yet
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: they're coming a week early.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: Not....
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Ambassadorship is not their main priority.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: Their main priority is to acclimatize themselves.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Let's, let's be clear.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: I'm not claiming that the San Francisco 49ers are doing this.
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: They feel like they're the benefit of the koalas and, or,
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: and the media fans.
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: They're doing it because they're sports science team thinks that
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: they'll get better sleep.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Their bodies will be better rested.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: They'll however, I'm not saying that that is the right
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: thing because this is the team that practices next to
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: a electrical substation that is destroying their connective tissues. So,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: I mean, according to science, it's not. According to science,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: it's not. But when has science ever got anything right?
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: It's true.
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: You're right. What are you, some kind of scientist now, James?
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Are you pro-science? Are you not?
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Joe breaking news on the show.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: James Peterson, who is, it's not infinite, but he is
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: our producer right now.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Nothing's infinite. He is pro science. And when it comes
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: to injury prevention, wow. James.
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: What a terrible, what a terrible person.
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:10:10Speaker 8: Good luck.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: In all seriousness, the Rams, it like at some point,
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: this is going to be during the game. This is
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: going to be part of the story that they tell
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: with the game. Like All right, the 49ers had this
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: injury here in practice. Season ending.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: That sucks.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Your starting defensive tackle is out. The Rams didn't bring
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: a guy who's eventually going to be a starting defensive
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: tackle this year.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: By the way, the 49ers look either fresh or not
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: because they've been here for a week. The Rams look
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: either fresh or not because they got here yesterday, which is,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: by the way, a lot more normal of a schedule
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: for an NFL road trip.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: They fly in. They do their business. They fly home.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: It's not like when you're San Francisco playing at Denver,
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: you get there on Tuesday and you're hanging out and
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: you're going to a Rockies game. And you're like, you
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: get there on Saturday and then you play on Sunday
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: and then you fly home. That's the way they do things.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: So the Rams method might be the right one here.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And Sean McVay obviously thinks so.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: They're trying to make it as like, To your point,
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: they're trying to make it as normal of a game
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: week as they possibly can.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: And I heard that.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: One of the reasons for that is not just to
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: make it seem normal for the team, but also because
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: their sports science people, their people that they have employed
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: giving them advice on this, seem to think that this
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: will be better for them for their week two game.
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: They'll be better more prepared physically, metaphysically, mentally for week two,
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: if they just fly in and fly out, then the
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Niners will be staying for a week and then flying back.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: So that'll be interesting for me. That's interesting to see.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: Which team is.
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Better not just tomorrow night, but also in the following week,
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: like which method worked better.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: It'll be interesting to see the LA Rams. Again, we're
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: not talking, we're talking about the game. This bad radio.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: We're talking about the game that kicks off tomorrow. Cause
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: it's the one that has my favorite team. And it's,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: it's Patriots Seahawks. They kick off tonight. The Patriots are
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: plus 1800 to win the Superbowl that they're what's this
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: two or six. They're eighth, eighth, best odds to win
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: the Superbowl. According to the preseason pick, according to the
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: odds makers, according to Las Vegas, Seattle, of course, the
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: defending champions who returned all but two starters from last
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: year's team, by the way, those guys are sitting at
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: fourth best odds plus 1200 to win this year's Superbowl.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: The Rams are the odds on favorite and by a
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: pretty significant margin, they've got twice as good odds as
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: the next best team, which is of course the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Baltimore Ravens at three Seattle Seahawks. I already mentioned the
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: fourth best odds, the Kansas city chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, LA chargers.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Then the Patriots at eight Houston, Texas, Cincinnati Bengals rounding
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: out the top 10. That is a belief in Joe
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: burrow and in nothing else from Vegas.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: It's weird that the Texans are that high too. There's
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: a lot of people who think that the chargers pass.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Rush is And the Texans defense this year is going
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: to be like one of the main stories in the NFL.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Historically good, which we see Hunter and will Anderson as
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: your tandem defensive ends.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: Nightmarish.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: That could be like a little Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis situation.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: And we've seen, obviously we can, we can all name
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: the teams that led by historically great defense and, not
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: that great offense, win Super Bowls, right?
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: That happens. It's just, I don't know.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: It is a lot more of an outlier than the
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: more balanced teams on both sides of the ball.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: And unfortunately, C.J.
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: Stroud, after that great rookie year, has not proven to
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: be a great offensive leader as a quarterback, helping that
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: team be a great offense. I say the Chargers, too,
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: because come on. When are we going to When are
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: we going to realize that Justin Herbert and the L.A.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: Chargers have never done anything? Why are we giving them
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: the Oklahoma State treatment, who, by the way, lost to
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: Tulsa on Saturday? Congratulations on all that preseason hype. That's
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: all you're going to get this year, probably. Why do
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: we do this, OC?
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: The Houston Texans had the 18th best offense in the
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: league last year. They had the number one defense ever.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: in the league last year. I don't know exactly where
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: the Venn diagram has to match up.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: I don't know exactly like on the hot, crazy scale.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: You have to.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Be as a, as an NFL football team, but having
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: a middle of the road offense and an elite defense
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: is probably not quite enough to make you a super
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: bowl champion. If you can have a slightly above average
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: offense and an elite defense, you can win championships.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: We've seen Utah football do that. where you've got like.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: A decent offense, a, a above average offense and an
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: elite defense. And you're right there in that championship picture.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: The thing that gets you over the hump though, in football,
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: in modern day football is having some kind of offensive
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: outlier status, whether it's, you've got a way above average quarterback,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: even if your receivers aren't great, sound familiar. You've got
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: a really great running game and an adequate quarterback. And
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: then you've got that defense that, Again, the championship recipe
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: in the NFL has swung more and more and more
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: towards the offense. That is what helped the Rams become
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: the Rams conversationally, at least in the first place. Last year,
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: interestingly enough, the Seattle Seahawks were just the most well-rounded team.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: They didn't have a top five offense or a top
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: five defense, and yet they ended up winning the Super Bowl.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: So there's that. as a potential goal for your team.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Like by all means, acquire the personnel that you can
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: get the best quarterback play that you can. The Seahawks
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: were the sixth best defense in the league last year.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: And they were the, I think it was the ninth
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: best offense in the league, which again, that's from a
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: composite score type standpoint, your top 10 and both you're
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: giving yourself a chance in every game. And ultimately they
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: obviously took it all down. So I think they're probably
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: not being talked about enough. They're not going to be
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: talked about anymore on this show because I'm a Niners guy,
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: so I don't want to talk about the Seattle Seahawks.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: But I hope Rasheed Shaheed and Conor O'Toole continue to
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: have a lot of success.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: If you want to weigh in on anything NFL or,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: of course, the craziness in college football right now.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Sam from... Sam on, uh, on the text line. Okay.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: I like it. Uh, shout out to the Collingwood magpies.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: You need to look like a convict outfit that you
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: get at spirit Halloween called magpies.
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: I like that. Collingwood.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Um, I, I also went to a, I think I
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: went to a Collingwood versus Port Adelaide game when I
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: fought in Adelaide, Australia. If I'm not mistaken, I think
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Collingwood is who they were playing against. So, Sam, thanks
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: for stirring that up. Mike in Kaysville is on the phone.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Is that correct, James?
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Mike, welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show. How are you?
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: I'm well. Thanks for asking. I love your show. Listen
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: every day. My play that I would want back is
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: when Kaitlin Kaye Katelyn clay put the ball down on
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: the one foot line and I can see it sitting there.
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Nobody knew, but the rest of the crowd, it was awful.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: Oh, I remember that very distinctly.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: And it was a confusing, I, it was kind of
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: like one of those look away and then look back moments.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: And I was like, wait, what's going on here? Why
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: is this happening?
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: And obviously we all, we all came to realize the
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: devastating error that had been made.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: That is the, that's the mulligan that you want back. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: I mean, I can see that he dropped it. We
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: knew that he didn't get the end zone, but it
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: was like, who's going to get the ball first, a
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: Utah guy or an Oregon guy.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: And ultimately it was Oregon and they took it all
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: the way back. Backbreaker, terrible momentum. Thanks for the phone call.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Appreciate you listening every single day. It really, it really
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: feels great when people are like, Hey, I listen all
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: the time. Cause we don't know if you listen, like
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: for five minutes or you listen all day or you
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: listen every day or you listen one day a week.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: So when you call in and you tell me that
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: it's like, it's like walking up to me on the
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: street and be like, Hey, did you lose weight, man?
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: You look great. It gives me that kind of warm, fuzzy.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: And so see, and I, there's a glass between us.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: We do the air. We do the air five. We
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: got one.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Even if it's only one, I'm cool, man. If it's
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: just one, that's fine with me.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: Uh, Real quick, speaking of, he brought up that game
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: against Oregon back in the day. Our guy, I got
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: to correct the name here. Guys, Tim, who texted in,
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: the Ducks fan, not Tom. He mentioned he can watch
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: any NFL game. Is Mike calling back? The phone is
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: ringing again.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we got another one.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: We're going to have to do more calls in the
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: next hour, though, guys.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: We got to move on here in a sec. But
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Tim says.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: He's more into college, not the NFL, even though he
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: can watch, he can enjoy any NFL game because he's
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: got the diehard team with the ducks there. So shout
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: out to Tim in Cedar Hills, listening out there in Syria.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Appreciate that.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Daily dump is coming next. Keep the phone calls coming in.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: We'll slide you into the daily dump.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: I don't mind.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 700 92 on FM.
- 1:20:53Speaker 10: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:20:57Speaker 8: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:21:00Speaker 8: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:21:04Speaker 8: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:21:09Speaker 8: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:21:11Speaker 10: Just look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Make sure you call the truck with the duck or
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: you go to valleyplumbing.com. Make an appointment without even having
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: to pick up the phone for any drain cleaning, plumbing, furnace,
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: or air conditioner needs. Also, if there's a big excavation job,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: maybe you need to dig up that sewer line. They've
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: got that covered for you as well. Shout out to
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: the truck with the duck. All right, we covered no
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Aaron Donald against the San Francisco 49ers.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: Cha-ching, that's good for the Niners.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I don't know if cha-ching is the right because I'm
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: not betting, but should be a good thing. As the
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: NFL season is set to start, Tampa Bay Buccaneers have
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: reached an agreement with Baker Mayfield on a record-setting contract extension,
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: making him the highest-paid Buc ever. Three years, $ 165 million
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: for Baker Mayfield, who is their franchise quarterback. This makes
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: him the third-highest-paid quarterback ever in the national football league.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: James is not impressed when these things happen because it's
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: just a timing situation. The Baker here's what's impressive about
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: the Baker Mayfield deal. His initial contract with the Tampa
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Bay Buccaneers was a one year, $ 4 million proved to us.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: You can play type deal. And he proved that he
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: could play. And then his next deal was for a
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: hundred million dollars. And now this deal is for $ 165
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: million in a franchise record.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I also, the language of.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: The article reporting on this was really fascinating to me
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: because they talked about it being a long-term extension. This
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: is This is not really like so much about semantics,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: but about the shifting attitudes of the NFL and how
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: long contracts are becoming a thing of the past in
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: the NFL. The money is so good right now that
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: players are willing to accept the relative lack of security
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: that previously they would have been fearful of over like
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: a three-year extension. Now, because they're making this kind of money,
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: they're like, all right, well, it's only three years, but
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: I'm getting generational wealth out of these three years. You
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: go back 15 years, 10 years, even in the NFL
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: and guys want six, eight, 10 year contracts, because what
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: do you want? You want guaranteed money. And that guaranteed
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: money for a team is only acceptable. If you can
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: kind of prorate it and spread it out over the
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: course of that longer term contract. salary cap going up
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: more revenue for the NFL seemingly every single year until
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: the aliens or AI decides to kill us more on
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: that here in just a second. And Baker Mayfield is
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: now a $ 55 million a year quarterback in the modern NFL.
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: That is a big number. Let me just reference back here.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: The Betting odds for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: a Super Bowl. Because that's why you're paying both Baker
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: Mayfield and Vita Veya that kind of money. Baker, or sorry,
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: not Baker Mayfield Super Bowl odds. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Bowl odds. 55-1, they are plus 4,500. They are way
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: down there. So here's another crazy reason why he's getting
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: this much money. He's been terrific in Tampa. Individually, he's
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: been awesome.
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: OC, he's been there three years, three full seasons. What
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: is his combined record? What is the team's combined record
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: without looking it up?
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: You know? I would say.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: He's probably won 15 games in those years, maybe 20.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Higher than that. 27 and 24. Not bad. Yeah.
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: But also barely over 500 missed the playoffs last year.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: And yet you're like, yeah, 55 million a year. Here
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: you go. Well, this is okay.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: So this is one of those things about being a
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: quarterback or being a point guard or being a starting pitcher, right?
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: The fear for whatever team is, all right, if we
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: don't get this deal done, if we have to hit
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: a reset button, if we don't have our franchise guy,
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: what do we have? The NFL teams that do not
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: have franchise quarterbacks are below 500. They're laughed at. The
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns are the perpetual example of this, where they
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: haven't been able to figure out a franchise quarterback for
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: 20 years. And they're at the top of the draft
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: every single year. And they've had one hall of famer
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: in those 20 years.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: It's brutal.
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: And we hope that their, their fortunes, they find some
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: reversal of fortunes here because now Spencer Fano is part
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: of that franchise, but man, that's why you have to
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: go all in on somebody like Baker Mayfield, because you know,
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: he's not the third best quarterback in the league.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: You know, he's not. You shouldn't have to pay him.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: Like he's the third best quarterback in the league, but
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: you kind of do because if you're, if you're saying,
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: all right, well, he's a top 10 guy or a
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: top 15 guy. If we don't secure him, there is
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: not another top guy out there for us.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: It's true.
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: And what's ironic about everything you said is that Baker
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: Mayfield was with the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: Didn't quite work. Great commercials with the Cleveland Browns. Yes,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: he did. Not a lot of, uh, Fun fact.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Also, we talked about this yesterday with Christian Gonzalez's contract.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: He's the highest paid Patriot ever.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Now Baker Mayfield is making more than double what Tom
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Brady made as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: And Tom Brady was paid $ 25 million a year to
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: be the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Bucs. And he
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: did win them a Superbowl.
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: He was still a top 10 quarterback at his advanced
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: stage at that time. One of them, a Superbowl. Had
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: a couple more awesome years and a divorce. And, yeah,
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: he was well worth that money, probably worth more than
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: the money they were giving him. Baker Mayfield, it's an overpay,
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: but he's also been really good in Tampa. It's been
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: a career renaissance for him. Obviously, the hope is they
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: have a much better year this year than they did
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: when they missed the playoffs the last year, and he's
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: a big.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: Part of that. Have we left Alec hanging on the
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: line too long?
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: Alec from vineyard wants to weigh in on yesterday's question
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: about a Mulligan. If you could go back and replay
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: any game deciding play for Utah football, like Michigan got
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: a chance to do over the weekend, which one would
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: you choose?
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Alec, welcome to the show. How are you doing?
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: Great.
- 1:28:29Speaker 11: Oh, see, how are you?
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: I'm great.
- 1:28:30Speaker 7: So before I share.
- 1:28:31Speaker 11: My moment that I would love to have reversed, I
- 1:28:34Speaker 11: wanted to share a super quick story. if that's all right.
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:38Speaker 11: So last week you had a caller try to call in,
- 1:28:44Speaker 11: but his wife or partner was in the background basically
- 1:28:47Speaker 11: telling him, why are you calling in? What are you doing?
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:28:50Speaker 11: You kind of, yeah. And he ended up hanging up.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 1:28:53Speaker 11: And me and my partner, we were in the car
- 1:28:55Speaker 11: at the time and she started laughing at that. She's like, yeah,
- 1:28:58Speaker 11: no one calls into radio shows anymore. Like I don't
- 1:29:00Speaker 11: blame her for asking why he was doing that. And
- 1:29:02Speaker 11: I was like, yeah, totally. So then on Saturday, we're
- 1:29:07Speaker 11: driving to, uh, driving up to Salt Lake and we're
- 1:29:12Speaker 11: listening to just ESPN 700. And we hear, she hears
- 1:29:16Speaker 11: a commercial, you know, for your show. And it was
- 1:29:19Speaker 11: our conversation from when I called in about the sauna
- 1:29:22Speaker 11: on Friday. She's like, was that you? I said, yeah.
- 1:29:27Speaker 11: She's like, you are so old. You were born in
- 1:29:30Speaker 11: the wrong generation. So she heard, unfortunately she heard my
- 1:29:35Speaker 11: grievance about the sauna in a commercial that you guys
- 1:29:38Speaker 11: were doing for your show on Saturday and decided to
- 1:29:42Speaker 11: let her feelings out about it.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Well, uh, is there a significant age gap between you
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: and your wife?
- 1:29:48Speaker 11: Uh, three years.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: That's not significant.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: So if you got to remind her, if you're, if
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: you're so old, then she's so old also.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: So I don't like that.
- 1:29:57Speaker 11: I'm not, I'm not going to walk that road. I'm sorry.
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: You're, you're a smart man. You probably shouldn't do that.
- 1:30:05Speaker 11: But anyways, uh, my moment, I would love to have
- 1:30:08Speaker 11: reverse was, uh, Unfortunately, my first ever time going to
- 1:30:13Speaker 11: a Utah BYU game, and I was sitting front row
- 1:30:16Speaker 11: in the north end zone where it happened, where it
- 1:30:21Speaker 11: was Beck to Harleen. And those words stabbed me in
- 1:30:25Speaker 11: the heart every single time I hear them. And all
- 1:30:28Speaker 11: of my BYU friends constantly bring it up. And yeah,
- 1:30:32Speaker 11: it wasn't a great moment. It wasn't a great first
- 1:30:34Speaker 11: experience for the Holy War. So I would love if
- 1:30:36Speaker 11: we could go back and not give John Beck 20
- 1:30:41Speaker 11: seconds to throw the game-winning touchdown.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: That one, I think I tweeted it to the same
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: effect when I put the question out in the first place.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: Even though it was not the most impactful game-changing moment
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: in Utah football history because they've gone on, they beat BYU.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: That was before the decade-long win streak, right? They've won
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: Pac-12 championships since then. They've been to the Rose Bowl
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: since then. That one is just one because it's, it
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: became a catchphrase. It became a rallying cry for BYU
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: football for your rival.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: So it's just like, Oh, you gotta get, if you
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: could wash that out.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: Of the lore, it would be, it'd be a real
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: problem for BYU and it'd be a real help for Utah.
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: So yeah, I think that's a good guess. Or I
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: think that's a good pick is the better way to
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: say that.
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: Shout out to, uh, to Alec in vineyard for having
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: the best stories, by the way, that is fantastic.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: That's fantastic. And so when he.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: Said, it's like the metaverse, when the wife is like,
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no one calls in.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: To radio shows.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: And then here's that you called into the radio show
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: and we clipped that. And then we played it and
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: she must've been like, wait, what? We just talked about this.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: You're actually doing this. You're one of these guys. That's amazing.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: And I love it.
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: Speaker 2, your, your guy, Alec, by the way, he is,
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: he's got the best sauna stories. He's our sauna guy, Alex.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: So you've just been educated.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I still so desperately want that caller
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: who did not stay on the line to call.
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: Back We want to make sure you know, because we
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: know you're listening, that this is always a safe space.
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: No matter what you got going on at home and
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: they're questioning your decision to try to call into a
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: radio show, you can still call into the radio show.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: We will still have you here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: People, by the way, still bringing in mulligans. And this
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: was from yesterday's show.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: I love it. Keep it rolling.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: The 7153 on the text line says, here's a mulligan super...
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: Superbowl hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch still gives
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: me nightmares.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: You know what?
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I'm fine with that one. I'm okay with them. Not
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: handing the ball off on the goal line.
- 1:32:50Speaker 5: That's okay.
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: By the way, a home of the Seahawks here, proudly
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: home of the Seahawks, CSPN, 792 on FM. We're going
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: to have the season opener Patriots Seahawks. They just, just
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: want to, I'll say that. So you don't have to
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: OC Rob.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: Who is 71 53.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: Rob also says definitely college football over the NFL, but
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: watch the Seahawks when they're on a free broadcast. which
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: by the way is problematic in and of itself, finding more,
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: you know, free broadcast. You don't have to get Amazon.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: You don't have to get Netflix. You don't have to
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: get like fewer and fewer games are being found on
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: just network television. And how about this actually scheduled my
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: time around the mammoth over the NFL.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: So, okay. So that's, that's another thing, right?
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: Even though hockey is, I don't feel like I'm yet,
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: died in the wool enough to say that hockey is
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: like my second or third favorite sport. That's absolutely true
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: of my household. Now we will schedule. We, we do
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: schedule around mammoth games. My, my wife loves to go
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: to mammoth games. We don't get babysitters for NFL games.
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: We're getting babysitters to go to mammoth games. I, I
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: don't even bother to go on the press pass as
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: much as I go on the ticket, which is, you know,
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: like we're paying for those. So, yeah, we schedule a
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: lot more stuff around the Mammoth than we do around
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: any NFL game. So that's a good shout from Rob.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: As we continue the Daily Dump here, another story from
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: Australia with the San Francisco 49ers. There's a player that
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: you probably don't know much about. His name is Braden Willis, okay?
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: The business side of the NFL is ridiculous.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: Pretty rough.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: So Braden Willis is a tight end and he flew
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: with the team to Australia. He is a special teams
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: backup tight end type guy. The San Francisco 49ers took
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Braden Willis to San Francisco with them, took, took Braden
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: Willis to Australia with them. And then they cut him
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: in Australia. They had to cut him so they could... Well,
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: they waved him. It's a nicer way to say that.
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: They waved him so that they could activate John Weeks,
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: who is a long snapper, a 40-year-old veteran long snapper,
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: who had to be activated from the practice squad in
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: order to help the team in Australia.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: That's brutal.
- 1:35:29Speaker 8: Now....
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: He's not going to have to just turn around and
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: fly back. He can stay in Australia. The initial report
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: said that they flew him down there. They cut him
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: and they flew him back. That was sensationalized. He's he
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: gets to stay with the team.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: He doesn't have to use a, he's not using up
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: a 53 band roster spot.
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: Is that, is that because the initial thought was that
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: they cut him and not waved him? Is that, is it,
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: that technicality that's like, yeah, you can, you're allowed to
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: stay with the team.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: They waved him. And then if he had been claimed
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: off waivers, he would have had to, he would have
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: had to go and he hasn't been claimed.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: He wasn't claimed. So the Niners can keep him. Okay.
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: On the practice squad.
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: Which, you know what? Of course.
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: You would, a guy in his position, he might want
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: to get picked up off waivers and be on an
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: actual 53 man roster, not the practice squad. But given
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: the trip, he's probably like.
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: You know what?
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Let's just, let's stick around here. You just another day.
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: Could you wave me another day so I could hang out?
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: I want to go. I want to go hold a wallaby.
- 1:36:43Speaker 3: At least go to a, at least go to the game.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: Like put me in, give me some tickets to the game.
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: If I can't be on the roster. Well, that's good.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Cause you're right.
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: The original report said he had to fly straight back
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: and that is even more brutal.
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: 16 hours down.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: I think it's 17 hours actually from San Francisco, 17
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: hours back. That'd be 34 hours of traveling. And you
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: were there for a couple of days.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Probably.
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: We have a, we have a PFL Dubai trip coming up,
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: assuming that the middle East doesn't explode again. And I
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: was looking at the flights because you got to, you know,
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: they're going to start booking travel soon. I was looking
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: at the flights and because, because no one wants.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: To fly to Dubai right now.
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: Why not? I don't get it. Airspace in the Middle
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: East is apparently complicated right now. Imagine that.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: The routes, James, the biggest first world problem I'm going
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: to have this year. Like the get there and get
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: back is ridiculous right now. It's going to add like
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: several hours. It adds another flight, right? It used to
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: be you could fly one stop pretty effectively, right? You
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: could go either to the east coast of the United States,
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: like go to New York, fly to Dubai from there,
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: or you could go to Amsterdam and fly to Dubai
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: from there. Now KLM's just like, we're not flying there.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: Now I think it's American Airlines that does the New
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: York to Dubai one.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: They're like, we're not flying there. So it's like, oh, crap.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: We got to add another stop.
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: So you got to go to Europe, then Africa, then
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: something like that?
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: You got to go you got to go Europe.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Then, uh, Qatar, which again, another middle Eastern stop and
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: then to Dubai. So I know that that doesn't affect
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: anybody except me and it won't for at least a month,
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: but geez, you're just, you're just expressing that you might
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: know what Braden Willis may have had to gone through
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: if he hadn't gotten, uh, unclaimed from waivers.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: That's brutal.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: That's a brutal flight for you in about a month,
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: but it'd be fine. But that, that the business of
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: the NFL, that's brutal. At least he gets to stay.
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: Shout out to the 40 year old long snapper. That's activated.
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: Just hanging around dude. Long snapper. I, if you are a.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: Six foot two, 240 something pound backup, like defensive end
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: or tight end or somebody right now, in high school
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: football or college football, just become a great long snapper.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: Those dudes could hang around in the league for a long,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: long time.
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: The old KGDC keep getting them checks and it's not.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Glamorous, but it doesn't have to be, man.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: You play 12 snaps a game. You got to make
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: at least the league minimum. That's your advice today from
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell show brought to you as part of
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: the daily dump, which of course is presented by Valley plumbing,
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: heating And cooling.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: Plenty left to get to.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: Ari Temkin is going to join us at the top
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: of the 1 o'clock hour.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:39:56Speaker 10: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:40:03Speaker 8: Your source for the best youth football coverage. Here's OC
- 1:40:06Speaker 8: from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: All right, great stuff on the text line today, 877-353-0700.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: This question from Adam Burke. Perfect to fill a couple
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: minutes before we get to Ari Temkin. Discuss this at
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: work today. If Michigan loses to Oklahoma and Ohio State
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: but wins out otherwise, are they a playoff team or
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: do they get punished for losing to Western Michigan?
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: I think that, yes, they do get punished. I think
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: that the only way that the.
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: The Wolverines can kind of pull themselves out of the
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: perceived tailspin is by beating some of the most impressive
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: names on their, on their schedule.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Well, hold on a minute, hold on a minute.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: Cause in this hypothetical, you lose to Oklahoma. So now
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: you're one in one, but in everyone's hearts, your own two,
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: it feels like you're on two, but you're one in
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: one Notre Dame survived starting. Oh, and two and still
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: made a college football playoff, right? So let's say if
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: you're Michigan, now you're, so right now you're effectively, even
- 1:41:29Speaker 2: though they don't keep official rankings outside of the top 25,
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: you're 28.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Okay. You're 28. You lose to Oklahoma.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: Now you're like 35 or lower, right?
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: You beat UTEP. That does nothing for you.
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: Let's assume Iowa stays ranked by the time they come
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: to Ann Arbor.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: You beat Iowa. Now you start climbing again. Now you're 33.
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: Okay. right?
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: You beat Minnesota. That probably does nothing for you. You
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: beat Penn state.
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: Now, depending on what's happening in front of you, now
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: you're back flirting with the top 25.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: If Penn state is still ranked, especially you're in that position,
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: you beat Indiana, who you're back in right now is
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: ranked five.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Now you're in the top 25 and you've got Rutgers,
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: Michigan state, and then Oregon. If you beat Oregon, They
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: got a tough schedule. They've got a nightmare of a schedule.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: It's why we talked about this. Kyle Whittingham left the
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: university of Utah under inauspicious circumstances. Some of it, his fault,
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: some of it, potentially the fault of an athletic department
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: that was kind of finished with him, right? Instead of
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: riding off into the sunset and getting his statue built
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: in five years, that is now kind of an ugly,
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: complicated situation that is going to take some level of reconciliation.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: I think for maybe from both sides, right?
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: And he's doing that to potentially on paper, be the
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: fifth best team in the big 10.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: Cause even before the debacle of a win against Western Michigan,
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: Oklahoma is you're, you're going, that's a home game. Maybe
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: before the season, you're like, we could beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma,
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Penn state, Penn state's new, new coaching staff, just like you. Maybe,
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: maybe you feel pretty good about beating Penn state. I
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: don't know if that's a home or road game though.
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: I don't, it's a home game.
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: I don't think anyone should feel good about beating Indiana
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: You shouldn't feel good about beating Indiana.
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: You should not feel good about beating Oregon. That's on
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: the road, by the way, the tough game, the tougher
- 1:43:29Speaker 3: than expected game against Boise state, not withstanding that's that
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: Oregon team's going to be really good.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: And Boise state might end up being really good, right?
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: in the new pack 12.
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: And then you play Ohio state every year, who this
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: year is probably going to be a top five team.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: If not number one in the country at that time.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: By the way, Oregon, UCLA, then Ohio state UCLA by
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: then might not suck.
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: It looks like Bob Chesney's got that thing off to
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: the right start.
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: So look, we didn't even mention Iowa who's ranked right now.
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: And they're always a tough game. Let me tell you this, uh, Adam,
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: that's who brought this in. I love this question.
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: Because if Michigan, and I think it's a shot in
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: the dark type if, I think that you could potentially
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: see Michigan, if they beat Iowa, Penn State, Indiana, Oregon,
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: and Ohio State. Oh, no, you lose to Ohio State
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: in this one. So you beat Iowa, Penn State, Indiana, Oregon.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: And all of them are ranked at the time. UCLA,
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: you would have to be UCLA and UCLA. Who knows
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: what they're going to be there? At least be probably respectable.
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: If I know anything about what Bob Chesney has been
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: able to do, then you lose to Ohio state. No
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: one is punished for losing to Ohio state. Losing to
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: Ohio state does not hurt you because Ohio state, unless they,
- 1:44:54Speaker 2: their wheels fall off at some point is going to
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: be ranked in the top five at that point, probably
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: ranked number one or maybe number two at that point.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: I think you could potentially make a playoff there.
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: The committee's probably going to, as a consensus, probably going
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: to count Western Michigan as a loss, though, even though
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: it technically isn't. That's how I feel about it right now. Obviously,
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: December's a long ways away. It's going to be very interesting.
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: I didn't realize they had that kind of a gauntlet
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: of a schedule, though. He could get five losses this year.
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: went in Michigan and they could be a pretty good
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: team and lose five games because of that.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: Here's the people they're playing. That's man. Crazy stuff. Let's
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: take a break.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: We'll come back with Ari Temkin for big 12 radio
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: on tune in lots to talk about in the world
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: of college football and this big 12 conference.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 700 and 92
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: on FM.
- 1:46:03Speaker 10: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:46:05Speaker 10: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: Football season is back. College football this weekend. Great slate
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: coming up. Arizona and BYU, Utah and Arkansas. NFL tonight,
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: NFL tomorrow night. Ari Temkin is going to be all
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: over all of it. Friend of the program, Big 12
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: radio on TuneIn at the Big 12 studios, and he's
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: doing some Cowboys work on the Haymaker Network.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: Ari, welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: I'm great, O.C. How are you, brother?
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: I'm doing awesome, man. We're in football season again. It's
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: a good time of year.
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: Yeah, what could be better? It started last Thursday. The
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: only day off we had was yesterday. We've got NFL
- 1:46:59Speaker 4: football tonight, NFL football tomorrow. Great Kansas-Missouri rivalry game. First
- 1:47:04Speaker 4: time in Lawrence for that game in 20 years. Like,
- 1:47:07Speaker 4: this is hooking straight into my veins, man. Seriously.
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: Who impressed you most in the Big 12 this past weekend?
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: Colorado. Best win by far. um you know and and
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: look you gotta hand it to julian lewis he was
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: not good through three and a half quarters he looked
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: you know like the moment was too big and you
- 1:47:30Speaker 4: know he said after the game they had no doubt
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: that they were going to go and score and glad
- 1:47:34Speaker 4: they didn't because i think we all did i mean
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: for three and a half quarters you look like you
- 1:47:38Speaker 4: were incapable of scoring and then they get the ball
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: back down six with 140 left and no timeouts and
- 1:47:45Speaker 4: scored like it was easy so I think the big
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: development from that game is their defense, their rush defense
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: in particular, and their rush offense. These are two things
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: that I know you and I talked about heading into
- 1:47:58Speaker 4: the season. I expect that Brennan Marion is going to
- 1:48:00Speaker 4: make a significant difference in their rush offense. And through
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: one week, Michael Welch, who has just not been as
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: effective for Colorado, was extremely effective. And their rush defense
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: was dominant. Their pass defense was. struggled and it almost
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: gave up the game at the end But I think
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: Deion's got to like where he's, where he is after
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: one week. And look, I was critical of Deion last
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: year at times for in-game coaching. I mean, clock management
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: in certain situations was dreadful. And, you know, that changed.
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: I mean, it was clear the way that he managed
- 1:48:33Speaker 4: the end of the game, taking his timeouts, And then
- 1:48:36Speaker 4: kind of allowing Colorado to get the ball back with
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: one left. I just think in every way that game
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: was as masterful as Colorado has not been the last
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: couple of years. So they were super impressive. And for
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: a team that I said pounds the over four and
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: a half, it's a bowl team. They're off to a
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: really good start.
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: I watched Houston and I was like, okay, I think
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: they looked how, how I thought they would look.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: I don't really know how we judge Oregon state as
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: of yet.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: Texas Tech had less than a perfect game, which I
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: think was encouraging for a.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Lot of people.
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: BYU played a junior college team effectively. The team's at
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: the top of our at least perceived power structure in
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: this Big 12 conference. Did anyone surprise you? Is there
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: anything stronger or shakier than maybe you expected?
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: Well, I mean, let's start with Texas Tech. It's really
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: interesting because Tech gets Oregon State this week, and earlier
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: this week, it's like, do you have to stop your
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: Houston and watching the Oregon state Houston film? Because they've
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: got Oregon state and Houston and back-to-back weeks.
- 1:49:45Speaker 9: So it's gotta be rare.
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: That you see kind of a non-conference opponent, take our
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: conference opponent and that you're playing those two teams in
- 1:49:51Speaker 4: successive weeks. And, you know, look, I'm not gonna, you know,
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: I'm not gonna nitpick, but you don't expect Will Hammond
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: to look fully back. I mean, he's not even fully
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: 11 months removed from tearing his ACL. So you expect
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: there to be a little bit of cobwebs that he's
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: got to dust off. I also think, you know, the
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: big picture for me there was, I don't know that
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: that defense looks to be as dominant as we expect. Now, again, it's,
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: you know, we're accounting for one team that they played.
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: And so maybe I'm just nitpicking too much, but you know,
- 1:50:25Speaker 4: this was a dominant defense last year, last year, they
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: were a record setting defense. And yeah, from many around
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: the program that, hey, this defense could actually be better,
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: which is just hard to believe, again, considering it's a
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: record-setting defense. I would say one game in, that doesn't
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: appear to be the case. And do they need to
- 1:50:43Speaker 4: be as dominant on defense? Probably not.
- 1:50:45Speaker 9: But if they're not, they're going.
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: To need to be better on offense. And so through
- 1:50:50Speaker 4: one week, that didn't look like it. But luckily, Big
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: 12 championships aren't won in one week, so they still
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: have some time to turn it around. I'm not sure
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: we can learn much else about anybody else. I do
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: think Oregon State is a much better team than the
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: team from last year. Their quarterback looked really good. I mean,
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: he really had an impressive performance. against Houston's Pasty. So
- 1:51:13Speaker 4: I'm very curious to see how Texas Tech's Pasty does
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: this week against that same outfit. That would be probably
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: my main takeaway from the team to the top of
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: the conference. I think, look, Utah did what they were
- 1:51:22Speaker 4: supposed to do. I think their rush defense at times
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: was a little bit questionable for those two drives that
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: Idaho had that led to touchdowns. But I also think
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: it's hard to gauge motivation at certain points throughout the game.
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: And ultimately, it was fun to watch Utah. Man, I
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: can't remember the last time I actually had fun watching
- 1:51:43Speaker 4: Utah play offense, and I imagine that's how Utah fans felt, too.
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: And then the other thing is kind of watching Kyle
- 1:51:49Speaker 4: Whittingham crash and burn before the Big Ten gods handed
- 1:51:52Speaker 4: them a victory.
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: Well, there's plenty of meat on the bone with that conversation,
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: and so we might as well get into it. Even
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: without the Utah context on it, this is the biggest
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: story in college football from the weekend, and I haven't
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: heard you're fully fleshed out thoughts on it.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: What should have happened at the end of that game?
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: Well, I mean, let's, let's put the shoe on the
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: other foot. If Western Michigan, you know, down where they were,
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: you know, what Michigan was down to that same circumstance,
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: are they putting a second pack on the clock?
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: No.
- 1:52:28Speaker 4: Hard to think they would. Now, you know, we, we
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: had the Scott Draper on who's kind of the head
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: of football and it's his job to, you know, know
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: the rules and, uh... oversee that we have to about this.
- 1:52:40Speaker 9: And you know he brought the fact that there's no tenth.
- 1:52:43Speaker 4: Of a second in football but there is a time
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: that exists between one second and zero seconds and so
- 1:52:49Speaker 4: essentially that's what they're saying is that time between one
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: second zero second exactly where they were which would be
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: ten for the second which football means you get a
- 1:52:56Speaker 4: playoff it back all means you probably can't catch and
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: shoot you've got to put it but there are no
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: there are ten for the second and i don't feel
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: that we're just making up rules in order to make
- 1:53:05Speaker 4: it feel like they she won that game fair and
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: square And the reality is they didn't Western Michigan had
- 1:53:10Speaker 4: that game stolen from them. And I think the NCAA
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: and the Mac completely agree there, but statements they've just released,
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: you know, the reality is. Michigan won this game because
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: the Big Ten absolutely needed Michigan to win this game.
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: Look at Michigan's schedule. They're toast. Rice Underwood was not good.
- 1:53:28Speaker 4: And we know the type of offense that Cal Whittingham
- 1:53:30Speaker 4: likes to run. It's going to be very blah. They're
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: going to play defense. They're going to run the football.
- 1:53:36Speaker 4: They want their quarterback to make a few throws, but
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: it's not going to be the most aggressive outside the
- 1:53:41Speaker 4: box thinking on offense. I don't know if that's going
- 1:53:43Speaker 4: to work. And, you know, even if they win this game,
- 1:53:47Speaker 4: the Michigan outlook to me does not look very good.
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: They've got to play Indiana. They've got to play Ohio State.
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: They've got to play Oregon. I mean, they're playing the
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: three best teams in the Big Ten. I think this
- 1:53:55Speaker 4: team looks certainly after one week like one of the
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: worst teams in the Big Ten given, you know, they barely.
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: Battle, but ultimately I'm going to pay attention to what
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: they're doing the rest of the season to see if
- 1:54:07Speaker 4: they win the war in terms of being a 500
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: or better team, because after one week, it doesn't look
- 1:54:12Speaker 4: like it. And, you know, they're certainly getting the benefit
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: of the doubt here based on, you know, some very,
- 1:54:16Speaker 4: very fishy officiating here. That was extremely big 10 friendly.
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: I mean, the game was over. Everybody knew it. Everybody
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: saw it. And yet they put a second back on
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: the clock. Now look the other day, why are you
- 1:54:28Speaker 4: rushing five? Why can't you defend to Hail Mary? These
- 1:54:31Speaker 4: are all things we always ask. You've got to take
- 1:54:33Speaker 4: the game out of the officials' hands. But in this case,
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: it was an egregious second they put back on the clock.
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: Okay, so the correct way for me to look at
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: that whole situation is what does this mean for Utah football?
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: What does it mean.
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: That it was such a disastrous start for Kyle Whittingham? And,
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: you know, the opponent was significantly different, but it was
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: a good start. For Morgan Scali, you know, is Jason
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: Beck was a much sought after offensive coordinator and hit
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: the offense look terrible. The offensive line looked terrible. And
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: Jim Harding was one of the most sought after offensive
- 1:55:12Speaker 2: line coaches. Is it just what what Kyle Whittingham does,
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: what they do doesn't work at Michigan isn't going to
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: work at Michigan or was this a fluke?
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: Look, I don't think it was a fluke. I do
- 1:55:27Speaker 4: think what Kyle Whittingham does should work at Michigan, right?
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: I mean, when you've got the horses, then you should
- 1:55:34Speaker 4: be able to have a really effective defense. You should
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: be able to run the ball effectively, right? I mean,
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: it's the same exact model that Utah has followed, have
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: a really big offensive line, have a really big and
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: aggressive defensive front. One of the things we talked about
- 1:55:50Speaker 4: with Morgan Scali at Media Days is, You know, what
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: is it about the scouting and development at Utah that
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: it doesn't seem to have made a huge difference? from
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: a personnel standpoint, they always seem to turn out quality
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: defensive linemen. And Scali's like, yeah, there's certain traits we're
- 1:56:04Speaker 4: looking for. There's certain things we develop. That's a Fred
- 1:56:07Speaker 4: Whittingham thing that goes back even before Kyle.
- 1:56:10Speaker 9: And so.
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: It should work at Michigan, right? Michigan is going to
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: get blue-chip prospects. They're going to get NFL prospects, especially
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: on the offensive and defensive lines. And that was always,
- 1:56:22Speaker 4: in my opinion, what made the SEC head and shoulders
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: above everybody else. They would just hoard NFL talent along
- 1:56:29Speaker 4: offensive and defensive lines and Alabama would line up and
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: they'd run it down your throat and you couldn't do
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: anything to stop it. And you couldn't do anything on
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: offense to combat the strength that they had with a
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: bunch of NFL players along their defensive line. And Michigan
- 1:56:41Speaker 4: should be the same. So I think like the idea
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: here of like playing them straight up, you should be
- 1:56:46Speaker 4: able to be successful is actually the case, but you know,
- 1:56:49Speaker 4: without following the, Michigan and they're recruiting that closely. I'm
- 1:56:54Speaker 4: not sure if they were sort of caught this first
- 1:56:56Speaker 4: year with a half-baked class in terms of having the
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: right people and right guys up front. It is one week,
- 1:57:04Speaker 4: but man, it feels like it's said a lot, much
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: in the same way that one week for Oklahoma State
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: seems to have said a lot. you know, you know,
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: this OC, like in football, it's never as bad as
- 1:57:14Speaker 4: it seems. And it's never as good as it seems.
- 1:57:16Speaker 4: And you always want to reserve judgment week to week.
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: For me, I always judge seasons in quarters because if
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: something happens in one game, it's an anomaly. If something
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: happens over three or four games, it becomes a pattern
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: three in college football and four in the NFL.
- 1:57:31Speaker 9: And so, you know, I always reserve judgment for three weeks,
- 1:57:33Speaker 9: but it's.
- 1:57:34Speaker 4: Hard not to look at that as a resounding message that,
- 1:57:37Speaker 4: this is not a good fit at least year one here.
- 1:57:40Speaker 4: And I feel like Kyle Whittingham looked extremely relieved that
- 1:57:44Speaker 4: they were able to win the game because you could
- 1:57:46Speaker 4: tell like how tense those moments were in the fourth quarter.
- 1:57:49Speaker 9: Where he could just sense that this thing was not
- 1:57:51Speaker 9: going to.
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: Go his way. In some ways, I almost felt bad
- 1:57:53Speaker 4: for him, which is weird because I'm obviously on the
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: Utah side of things and how poorly Whittingham handled it,
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: how well Scali handled it. But it really was, I
- 1:58:03Speaker 4: almost felt bad for him.
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: There there was, I think a decent amount of questioning
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: about whether or not Bryce Underwood and Kyle Whittingham and
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: maybe Jason Beck by extension, like how well that whole
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: thing jives.
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: And I think that's a valuable question in modern football
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: because Kyle Whittingham has adapted to the new era, but
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: I don't think he's truly embraced the, the new era,
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: if that makes sense, if I'm saying that the right way.
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: And Bryce Underwood is absolutely a product of that new
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: era where your boosters have as much to do with
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: who your starting quarterback is going to be as your
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: coaching staff does. And with the big ticket NIL deal
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: that is attached to Bryce Underwood's name, a couple of
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: questions were brought up about like, well, if you want
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: to bench this guy.
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: How easy is that to do?
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: Or do you have to make a phone call to
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: Dave Portnoy? And do you have to make a phone
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: call to whoever else threw some money in there and say,
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: all right, it's not working out. So we have to
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: do this. And that's not just a Michigan question. I
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: think that's a question everywhere. I've asked coaches point blank.
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: Do you have to factor in salary now when you
- 1:59:16Speaker 2: want to bench a guy or play a guy or
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: anything else?
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: How does that play into this Michigan deal?
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: No, I think it very much does. It's interesting, too,
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: because I covered the University of Texas in Austin for
- 1:59:30Speaker 4: a good period of time, and this was back in
- 1:59:33Speaker 4: the early 2010s when this was probably not the case,
- 1:59:38Speaker 4: like what you're asking. I don't know every other school
- 1:59:42Speaker 4: in the country, with the exception of a few, including Texas.
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: Part of the job for Mack Brown wasn't just to
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: coach football was to be a CEO coach, which is
- 1:59:51Speaker 4: now what every coach is expected to be. And, and
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: at Texas at that point in time, it was, you've
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: got to shake hands and kiss babies. There are a
- 1:59:58Speaker 4: lot of boosters and like they, they need a lot
- 2:00:01Speaker 4: of attention and Mac did it to a tee. It
- 2:00:04Speaker 4: was probably his best skill set at Texas, quite frankly,
- 2:00:07Speaker 4: in that he knew that like all of these boosters,
- 2:00:11Speaker 4: not only just their names, but their wives' names, their
- 2:00:13Speaker 4: kids' names, their grandkids' names. Like he went so deep
- 2:00:17Speaker 4: with each of them and that.
- 2:00:18Speaker 9: Played a crucial role in his success.
- 2:00:21Speaker 4: It was something that in seeing and observing Tom Herman,
- 2:00:24Speaker 4: he was quite frankly the exact opposite. And so I
- 2:00:26Speaker 4: think like that's just one example at the University of Texas,
- 2:00:29Speaker 4: but I think that this is the norm now. You
- 2:00:32Speaker 4: do have to placate to certain people. And Kyle Whittingham
- 2:00:36Speaker 4: doesn't strike me as the type where it's like, if
- 2:00:38Speaker 4: I want to bench Bryce Underwood, I'm not calling Dave Portnoy.
- 2:00:40Speaker 4: But that doesn't mean that you have to call Dave,
- 2:00:42Speaker 4: and we're using Dave Portnoy as the example here, but
- 2:00:44Speaker 4: let's insert any Michigan booster, any Michigan millionaire, or in
- 2:00:48Speaker 4: this case, many billionaires, which I'm not sure Portnoy is,
- 2:00:51Speaker 4: but there are many billionaires that went to Michigan that
- 2:00:53Speaker 4: are funding that football and basketball programs. You know, Kyle
- 2:00:56Speaker 4: Strix is the type of guy that may call and
- 2:00:58Speaker 4: may ask for advice or input, but he's not necessarily
- 2:01:01Speaker 4: going to actually do that. He's going to do what
- 2:01:03Speaker 4: he wants, but he's going to placate to them. And
- 2:01:06Speaker 4: I think every coach needs to figure out what exactly
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: that line is, because at the end of the day,
- 2:01:12Speaker 4: all those guys want is to win. Yeah, sure, they
- 2:01:14Speaker 4: want their input, but... Ultimately, if they don't win and
- 2:01:18Speaker 4: then they feel like their input's not being heard, that's
- 2:01:21Speaker 4: an absolute disaster for that coach, which is exactly what
- 2:01:23Speaker 4: happened to Tom Herman. And again, I think this is
- 2:01:25Speaker 4: happening everywhere across the country. Every coach has to decide,
- 2:01:29Speaker 4: who do I have to listen to and at least...
- 2:01:31Speaker 4: gauge advice on, and then what.
- 2:01:35Speaker 9: Do I do with that information?
- 2:01:36Speaker 4: They're not football coaches. And though many of them are
- 2:01:39Speaker 4: billionaires and have made quality decisions in their businesses to
- 2:01:43Speaker 4: make them billionaires, that does not qualify them to be
- 2:01:45Speaker 4: football coaches. If anything, it's probably quite the opposite. They've
- 2:01:48Speaker 4: got huge egos without much of the substance to follow
- 2:01:50Speaker 4: it up. Just look at Cody Campbell. So for me,
- 2:01:54Speaker 4: if there's a balancing act there where you sort of
- 2:01:58Speaker 4: need to at least placate them to a degree, because
- 2:02:00Speaker 4: at the end of the day, like if you don't
- 2:02:02Speaker 4: win and they don't like you, that is not going
- 2:02:05Speaker 4: to buy you much time. I think Mack Brown bought
- 2:02:08Speaker 4: himself a lot more time at Texas because of those relationships.
- 2:02:10Speaker 4: Tom Roman was the exact opposite. Again, it's more of
- 2:02:12Speaker 4: a metaphor than the specific example we're looking at here.
- 2:02:16Speaker 4: But like, if you play the game.
- 2:02:18Speaker 9: Then ultimately that will buy you more time. But I mean,
- 2:02:21Speaker 9: but again, it's, it's a, it is a unrelenting business.
- 2:02:25Speaker 4: You got to win football games. And if you don't,
- 2:02:27Speaker 4: it doesn't matter what you're going to be out.
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting to, to even think of things through
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: this lens right now, because we're seeing the way that like,
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: and it's, it's framed, it's characterized as broken promises or
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: unkept promises, right? At BYU with the whole, like Brian Santiago,
- 2:02:46Speaker 2: Kalani Satake disagreement and, and the situation going on there.
- 2:02:50Speaker 2: And I think they seem to be handling it as
- 2:02:52Speaker 2: well as you probably can at this juncture of a season,
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: but that's a money thing, right? Because when you were
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: talking about unfulfilled promises, we're not talking about, well, he
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: said that, you know, I could, I could invite my
- 2:03:06Speaker 2: best friend to the game. We're talking about money that
- 2:03:10Speaker 2: is being funneled where it was supposed to or not. And,
- 2:03:15Speaker 2: and now it's, I think bleeding over more than ever.
- 2:03:18Speaker 2: into college football, actual decision-making, which is, it begs the question, right?
- 2:03:23Speaker 2: You've got a couple of quarterbacks on Utah's roster. Devin
- 2:03:28Speaker 2: Dampier and Bird Ficklin both showed really nice things, right?
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: And I think that we're going to see that every
- 2:03:35Speaker 2: single game, as long as both of those guys are healthy.
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: At some point, you'd like to keep both. at some
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: point they're getting phone calls from Michigan.
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: So I don't know what you do when we get
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: to the end of this season, if that is the case.
- 2:03:48Speaker 4: Speaker 4 0 5 0 1. Yeah, you're totally right.
- 2:03:51Speaker 4: And look, I think the reality that we've learned is
- 2:03:54Speaker 4: you know, every person is different certainly money is a
- 2:04:02Speaker 4: motivating factor, but I think if you've got a good
- 2:04:05Speaker 4: head on your shoulders, even at 18, 19, 20, and
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: you get good advice from people that genuinely have your
- 2:04:10Speaker 4: best interest at heart, which is far easier said than done,
- 2:04:14Speaker 4: you know, ultimately, you know, there's such a small amount
- 2:04:18Speaker 4: of these guys that actually make it to the pros
- 2:04:20Speaker 4: and get that pro money. But that money is so
- 2:04:22Speaker 4: much more substantial than anything that could ever get in college.
- 2:04:26Speaker 4: The problem is a lot of these guys are getting
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: really bad advice and they're being told, hey, you should
- 2:04:29Speaker 4: be starting. You should be doing this. You should be
- 2:04:31Speaker 4: doing that. As long as they're getting good advice and
- 2:04:34Speaker 4: they like the coaching, which appears to be the case
- 2:04:37Speaker 4: with Dampier and Ficklin, then I think all bets are off.
- 2:04:41Speaker 9: The BYU example is really interesting to me because this
- 2:04:44Speaker 9: one seems so easy.
- 2:04:45Speaker 4: It's such a good example. I think you get five
- 2:04:50Speaker 4: reasonable people in a room and you tell them the situation.
- 2:04:53Speaker 4: I don't know that anybody would take Brian Santiago side
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: with all due respect to Brian Santiago, but like you're
- 2:04:59Speaker 4: telling me that on a dollars to dollars comparison, BYU
- 2:05:03Speaker 4: is spending far more money on basketball. In comparison to.
- 2:05:07Speaker 9: Football, again, dollars to dollars, right?
- 2:05:09Speaker 4: So it's the, you know, for every dollar that football
- 2:05:13Speaker 4: is spending, basketball is spending this. At most schools, it's
- 2:05:16Speaker 4: like for every $ 7 being spent on football, it's a
- 2:05:20Speaker 4: dollar in basketball.
- 2:05:21Speaker 9: At BYU, it's closer to free. That is unbelievable, especially
- 2:05:26Speaker 9: when you.
- 2:05:26Speaker 4: Factor in the output. I mean, Kevin Young is a
- 2:05:30Speaker 4: friend of the program. He's a great guy. I think
- 2:05:32Speaker 4: he's a hell of a basketball coach. But you can't
- 2:05:34Speaker 4: look at me and tell me that that team and
- 2:05:36Speaker 4: program has not drastically underperformed relative to expectations. They haven't
- 2:05:40Speaker 4: done anything in the NCAA tournament and had a lot
- 2:05:43Speaker 4: of NBA talent.
- 2:05:44Speaker 9: On the other side, Kalani Sataki, without.
- 2:05:47Speaker 4: The resources that he should have, is making chicken salad,
- 2:05:51Speaker 4: like big-time chicken salad. And for a guy that is
- 2:05:55Speaker 4: not going to– For a guy that's roots are in
- 2:05:59Speaker 4: offensive line play, he's not going to be Dion.
- 2:06:02Speaker 9: He's not going to be screaming for.
- 2:06:03Speaker 4: The mountaintops, wanting that money. He is handling it as
- 2:06:07Speaker 4: only Kalani Sataki can. I can't even imagine and begin
- 2:06:10Speaker 4: to imagine the frustrations he must have, not.
- 2:06:12Speaker 9: Only in terms of resource allocation, but now.
- 2:06:15Speaker 4: The fact that you were actually told that you were
- 2:06:17Speaker 4: going to get this and you're not getting it. I
- 2:06:18Speaker 4: would be ticked off if I were Kalani, and I
- 2:06:20Speaker 4: noticed the resource allocation was out of whack without even
- 2:06:23Speaker 4: getting the promise. No, I got the promise. I'm still
- 2:06:26Speaker 4: getting that out of whack. Oh, and by the way,
- 2:06:27Speaker 4: football drives the bus. Football is the major revenue driver
- 2:06:32Speaker 4: at every school. And I say this as an alum
- 2:06:35Speaker 4: at the University of Kansas. This is egregious what's happening
- 2:06:39Speaker 4: at BYU. So, you know, yeah, I think. every situation
- 2:06:44Speaker 4: is different. I think when you look at the motivations
- 2:06:46Speaker 4: of kids, those are different. You try to recruit the
- 2:06:49Speaker 4: right kinds of kids, but you never know until you
- 2:06:51Speaker 4: get them on campus, what they're like. And ultimately you're
- 2:06:53Speaker 4: going to lose some of those guys. You're you want
- 2:06:56Speaker 4: to maintain most of them, but you're going to lose
- 2:06:58Speaker 4: some of them. And, you know, you just, it's like
- 2:07:01Speaker 4: this in radio, man. And it's the truth.
- 2:07:03Speaker 9: You just, I always tell people this.
- 2:07:06Speaker 4: It's like, you can't make all the people happy all
- 2:07:08Speaker 4: the time, but you can make some of the people
- 2:07:12Speaker 4: happy some of the time. And in radio, what it
- 2:07:14Speaker 4: means is like, if I, if you.
- 2:07:16Speaker 9: Asked your entire audience, what do you want to listen?
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: What do you want to hear about? What do you
- 2:07:18Speaker 4: want to hear about? Every person, most people are gonna
- 2:07:20Speaker 4: have different opinions. Ultimately you talk to a hundred of
- 2:07:22Speaker 4: them and there's going to be a prevailing opinion there.
- 2:07:25Speaker 4: Most of them are going to want to talk about
- 2:07:26Speaker 4: Utah football. But if I asked every person, I'd get
- 2:07:28Speaker 4: a bunch of different answers. And so I'm not going to,
- 2:07:30Speaker 4: I'm not going to make everybody happy. but I can
- 2:07:33Speaker 4: make some people happy some of the time. And that's, again,
- 2:07:36Speaker 4: I think very translatable in life.
- 2:07:38Speaker 9: In many fields, especially in this, you can make some.
- 2:07:41Speaker 4: People happy some of the time, but you can't make
- 2:07:44Speaker 4: all of the people happy all of the time.
- 2:07:45Speaker 9: And that's, that's really what it is.
- 2:07:49Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:07:49Speaker 2: Temkin for a couple more minutes here on the Sean
- 2:07:51Speaker 2: O'Connell show. So what does BYU versus Arizona look like?
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: This is the first kind of like premier big 12
- 2:07:59Speaker 2: versus big 12 matchup we get for the season. It
- 2:08:02Speaker 2: happens in week two, Brent Brennan and his team have,
- 2:08:06Speaker 2: I think something to say about the conference championship before
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: it's all said and done.
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: Do they make a splash in week two?
- 2:08:18Speaker 4: I love that this game is week two here, and
- 2:08:22Speaker 4: then we have Texas Tech-Houston week three, because I would say,
- 2:08:27Speaker 4: are these two teams that I expect to be playing
- 2:08:29Speaker 4: in Arlington? No, but these are certainly two of the
- 2:08:32Speaker 4: five best teams in the conference preseason-wise, so we're going
- 2:08:36Speaker 4: to get a pretty good gauge for both of these squads. Obviously,
- 2:08:39Speaker 4: Texas Tech and Houston as well next week. I think
- 2:08:44Speaker 4: when it comes to BYU and Arizona, it's so interesting
- 2:08:46Speaker 4: because BYU's biggest question this year is their passing attack.
- 2:08:51Speaker 4: They were not a consistent downfield passing threat last year
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: because they had a true freshman. There were limitations, especially
- 2:08:56Speaker 4: early on in the year. Ultimately, you know, I, the
- 2:09:04Speaker 4: question this year is, okay, do they have, are they
- 2:09:07Speaker 4: going to have any more.
- 2:09:08Speaker 9: Consistent downfield pass attack?
- 2:09:09Speaker 4: And, and though I think legend Glasgow looked unbelievable week one,
- 2:09:12Speaker 4: I mean, to be seen with Casper and everything else
- 2:09:15Speaker 4: they've added with their tight ends, if they're going to
- 2:09:17Speaker 4: have that.
- 2:09:17Speaker 9: And then for Arizona, this was.
- 2:09:19Speaker 4: One of the best secondaries in college football last year.
- 2:09:22Speaker 9: And, you know, two of.
- 2:09:23Speaker 4: Those guys at safety are going to be playing in
- 2:09:25Speaker 4: the NFL on, on Sunday. Um, and one of their
- 2:09:29Speaker 4: replacements at safety is actually a walk-on who had an
- 2:09:33Speaker 4: interception and was not even close to the radar before
- 2:09:36Speaker 4: the season started, you know, before fall camp started. So
- 2:09:40Speaker 4: for me, like the battle here comes down to the
- 2:09:43Speaker 4: biggest weakness for BYU also is a big weakness, AKA
- 2:09:47Speaker 4: question mark for Arizona. It's that pass offense against that,
- 2:09:51Speaker 4: you know, past defense, which was so good last year,
- 2:09:53Speaker 4: but lost four guys to the NFL draft and five
- 2:09:56Speaker 4: guys overall. So I, that's the most interesting, you know,
- 2:10:00Speaker 4: game within the game here. I do expect BYU to
- 2:10:03Speaker 4: win this game because I do think that they're the
- 2:10:06Speaker 4: better team, but, you know, we didn't see Isaiah Glass
- 2:10:08Speaker 4: for week one. I expect that we'll see him week two. We,
- 2:10:11Speaker 4: you know, Raider to Mooney now is going to be
- 2:10:13Speaker 4: out now for, the foreseeable future. I had questions about.
- 2:10:16Speaker 9: Their secondary heading into the season because they.
- 2:10:18Speaker 4: Lost Jay Hill and you know, it was so good.
- 2:10:21Speaker 4: So will it maintain that level, especially without the Mooney? I,
- 2:10:24Speaker 4: that to me is so interesting about this week, but
- 2:10:26Speaker 4: I do think and see a BYU winning.
- 2:10:28Speaker 2: It's going to be a fascinating weekend all over college football,
- 2:10:34Speaker 2: Utah versus Arkansas, obviously right here in Salt Lake city,
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: Arkansas is not exactly the best the sec has to offer,
- 2:10:42Speaker 2: which makes the game, I think that much more important
- 2:10:45Speaker 2: for Utah. You have to look good against this Arkansas team.
- 2:10:49Speaker 2: How do you see the Utah-Arkansas.
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: Game playing out, Ari?
- 2:10:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, this is such an important
- 2:10:55Speaker 4: game for the Big 12. Big 12 won 0-4 against
- 2:10:57Speaker 4: the SEC last year. And, you know, 0-1 so far
- 2:11:01Speaker 4: with Baylor losing basically a coin flip, you know, to Auburn.
- 2:11:05Speaker 4: And then there's the Arkansas-Utah game, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas
- 2:11:09Speaker 4: A & M or Arizona State. Find me a win there.
- 2:11:11Speaker 9: Let's see.
- 2:11:13Speaker 4: It's Utah, Arkansas. That's the one. So the Big 12,
- 2:11:17Speaker 4: and this is the last opportunity for the Big 12
- 2:11:19Speaker 4: SEC this season. So the Big 12 needs a win here,
- 2:11:22Speaker 4: maybe two. One would be nice, though. And certainly the
- 2:11:26Speaker 4: one that jumps out would be the one between.
- 2:11:29Speaker 9: Utah and Arkansas.
- 2:11:30Speaker 4: Look, Quincy Rhodes. is an absolute stud. He had eight
- 2:11:33Speaker 4: sacks and 15 and a half tackles for loss last
- 2:11:35Speaker 4: year for Arkansas. So he's an all-SEC guy, and they've
- 2:11:40Speaker 4: got a lot of new starters along their defense, but
- 2:11:42Speaker 4: that guy is not new. And so I think that's
- 2:11:45Speaker 4: the one they've got to account for because we don't
- 2:11:47Speaker 4: really have a gauge yet of what that Utah offensive
- 2:11:49Speaker 4: line looks like. And with that being said, I think
- 2:11:52Speaker 4: we put far too much stock into, Hey, they lost
- 2:11:54Speaker 4: two guys to the NFL along the offensive line and
- 2:11:57Speaker 4: not as much stock as we probably should have put into, Hey,
- 2:12:00Speaker 4: look at this innovative offense. That's actually fun to watch.
- 2:12:03Speaker 4: I mean, we saw bird fickle line up in the backfield.
- 2:12:05Speaker 4: We saw him lined out wide. We saw that tight
- 2:12:07Speaker 4: end line up in the backfield. What a fun, what
- 2:12:10Speaker 4: a fun team to watch. So like we really aren't
- 2:12:13Speaker 4: used to say with Utah football and offense. So sometimes
- 2:12:16Speaker 4: that's the great equalizer, right? Like, if you want to
- 2:12:18Speaker 4: play straight up and run downhill and play good defense,
- 2:12:21Speaker 4: like you better have a really good offensive line. But
- 2:12:23Speaker 4: if you, if you do some window dressing, some preset movement,
- 2:12:27Speaker 4: you are multiple and you know, your personnel packages. If
- 2:12:31Speaker 4: you know, if you run out of spread sets, run
- 2:12:33Speaker 4: out of 11 personnel and throw on a 13 personnel, right?
- 2:12:36Speaker 4: Like these are things that I think really innovative offenses.
- 2:12:39Speaker 9: Are starting to do that.
- 2:12:40Speaker 4: We haven't seen as much from Utah. I'd love to
- 2:12:43Speaker 4: see more of that. And I think that again is
- 2:12:45Speaker 4: kind of the great equalizer of, of, Hey, maybe our
- 2:12:47Speaker 4: offensive line is not as good as it was, by
- 2:12:48Speaker 4: the way, that's a high expectation considering we're talking about
- 2:12:51Speaker 4: two first round picks. Most teams don't have one along
- 2:12:53Speaker 4: the offensive line, let alone two on the same line.
- 2:12:56Speaker 4: So those are big shoes to fill. And though we
- 2:12:59Speaker 4: know we're, we're maybe not as good there. Now we
- 2:13:02Speaker 4: can do some things that, that allow for our play
- 2:13:04Speaker 4: calling to really compliment the fact that, you know, we're
- 2:13:07Speaker 4: not going to play you as quote unquote straight up.
- 2:13:09Speaker 4: And look, the best offenses in football are doing that.
- 2:13:12Speaker 4: I mean, you look at, at Ben Johnson with the
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: Chicago bears, you look at, Some of the most innovative
- 2:13:17Speaker 4: offensive minds, Sean McVay, it's the same stuff, right? It's
- 2:13:20Speaker 4: throwing out a 13 personnel. It's running out of 11
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: or 10 personnel. It's just, it's the pre-snap stuff. It's
- 2:13:27Speaker 4: all that window dressing that draws the defense's eyes and
- 2:13:31Speaker 4: forces them to have to adjust and think. And I
- 2:13:33Speaker 4: think that's what we're going to see way more of
- 2:13:34Speaker 4: Utah with. So I'm really excited to see this game.
- 2:13:37Speaker 4: It is, again, a game that is of huge importance
- 2:13:39Speaker 4: to the Big 12. And it's a game the Big
- 2:13:42Speaker 4: 12 really needs.
- 2:13:44Speaker 2: This one is apropos of almost nothing, but I think
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: people here in Salt Lake have always paid close attention
- 2:13:50Speaker 2: to Boise State because of their rivalries with Utah State,
- 2:13:53Speaker 2: with BYU, and just the similarity in status that Boise
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: State came from the same spot that Utah and BYU
- 2:14:02Speaker 2: have been able to graduate out of. They tested Oregon
- 2:14:05Speaker 2: pretty firmly. Is that more a commentary on Boise State
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: or on Oregon?
- 2:14:12Speaker 4: Take a little bit of both, you know, I mean,
- 2:14:14Speaker 4: Evan Stewart must have punt and, you know, and then
- 2:14:18Speaker 4: a play later, Boise state cashes in, you know, there
- 2:14:21Speaker 4: was some really a lot of penalties for Oregon. It
- 2:14:24Speaker 4: was just a very sloppy game and Oregon did itself
- 2:14:28Speaker 4: no favors in that game. Now you can make the
- 2:14:30Speaker 4: same case for Oklahoma state and Oklahoma state at nearly
- 2:14:33Speaker 4: 400 yards of total offense. They had, I mean, they
- 2:14:36Speaker 4: basically beat Tulsa in every offensive category. The problem was
- 2:14:38Speaker 4: they had far too many turnovers. They were really bad
- 2:14:41Speaker 4: on short yardage, especially third and one or fourth and one.
- 2:14:45Speaker 4: And like they, they were shut out multiple times on
- 2:14:48Speaker 4: fourth down.
- 2:14:49Speaker 9: I mean, it just could not get.
- 2:14:50Speaker 4: Out of their own way.
- 2:14:51Speaker 9: So, I mean, I think both games, But probably more Oregon.
- 2:14:56Speaker 4: I just chalk it up to week one stuff against
- 2:14:59Speaker 4: a pretty good group of 16 that will very much
- 2:15:04Speaker 4: be in the playoff race. So I.
- 2:15:09Speaker 9: Hope that Oklahoma State looks a little bit better. Again, the.
- 2:15:14Speaker 4: Short yardage stuff was just wild to me because I
- 2:15:17Speaker 4: wonder if Eric Morris kind of felt like, I could
- 2:15:20Speaker 4: do the same play calling that I'm used to doing
- 2:15:22Speaker 4: with a brand new team.
- 2:15:23Speaker 9: I mean, there's 91 new players.
- 2:15:26Speaker 4: I don't think, like, we have a sense of, like, yeah,
- 2:15:28Speaker 4: you can make that work immediately, but, like, are you
- 2:15:30Speaker 4: kidding me? That's 91 new guys. Like, that has to
- 2:15:32Speaker 4: take time. But we just live in a world right
- 2:15:34Speaker 4: now where you expect that it will immediately take. And
- 2:15:38Speaker 4: even though a lot of those guys, a handful of
- 2:15:39Speaker 4: them are from North Texas, like, that's still a brand
- 2:15:41Speaker 4: new team. Even if you brought your entire new team
- 2:15:43Speaker 4: with you, that's still a new team and a new season. So,
- 2:15:45Speaker 4: you know, I hope Oklahoma State shows up a little
- 2:15:50Speaker 4: bit better than it did last week in Tulsa. But
- 2:15:54Speaker 4: I mean, that is just going to be an absolute,
- 2:15:56Speaker 4: it's going to be a tough one because Oregon is
- 2:15:58Speaker 4: going to be mad coming off the way that they played. And,
- 2:16:01Speaker 4: you know, again, I think they did some things in
- 2:16:03Speaker 4: that game that kind of allowed Boise state to stay
- 2:16:05Speaker 4: in it.
- 2:16:07Speaker 2: I could pick your brain all day, but we got
- 2:16:09Speaker 2: to try to get to a break. I suppose, even
- 2:16:11Speaker 2: though it's way over time, are you the man appreciate
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: you as always enjoy this weekend.
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: We'll chat again next week.
- 2:16:16Speaker 4: Okay. Take care, OC. See you, brother.

- 2:17:29Speaker 2: Utah's number one sports stock, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:17:37Speaker 10: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:17:40Speaker 10: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: We got a pair of Weezer tickets we're going to
- 2:17:54Speaker 2: give away in topical trivia at the very end of
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: the show, which means we've got to keep this one
- 2:17:59Speaker 2: incredibly short. Remember yesterday in the Daily Dump when I
- 2:18:03Speaker 2: was talking about DK Metcalf and his conspiracy theory about
- 2:18:07Speaker 2: Antarctica and civilization being under the ice in Antarctica and.
- 2:18:10Speaker 1: We got way off the beaten track and went down
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: the rabbit hole.
- 2:18:15Speaker 2: Turns out that that conspiratorial mind has actually helped DK
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: Metcalf bond with, for him, the most important player on
- 2:18:23Speaker 2: the team to bond with because who else on the
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Steelers right now likes to go deep down the
- 2:18:28Speaker 2: conspiracy theory rabbit hole?
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: Happens to be the starting quarterback.
- 2:18:34Speaker 2: DK Metcalf followed up when he was asked about that
- 2:18:37Speaker 2: and said, Hey, look, it's really helped me and Aaron
- 2:18:39Speaker 2: Rogers bond because he's also a big conspiracy theory guy.
- 2:18:42Speaker 2: I want nothing more than the Pittsburgh Steelers to produce
- 2:18:46Speaker 2: their own hard knocks.
- 2:18:50Speaker 1: Put it behind a paywall.
- 2:18:51Speaker 2: If you want to produce their own hard knocks where
- 2:18:53Speaker 2: it's just DK Metcalf and Aaron Rogers sharing conspiracy theories.
- 2:18:59Speaker 2: I mostly don't want any more professional athletes to have
- 2:19:04Speaker 2: their own podcast.
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: I want those two guys to have their own podcast.
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: And I don't want it to.
- 2:19:09Speaker 2: Be anything about football at all. I want them to
- 2:19:12Speaker 2: talk sports exactly zero. I want them just talking about
- 2:19:16Speaker 2: their weird, outside-the-box, conspiratorial beliefs. Give me some of that.
- 2:19:23Speaker 2: Speaking of paywalls, by the way, I don't know if
- 2:19:26Speaker 2: you saw this. The University of Georgia... has put some
- 2:19:30Speaker 2: of their football season content behind a paywall. They have
- 2:19:34Speaker 2: these highlight recaps that you basically have to subscribe to
- 2:19:38Speaker 2: Georgia Bulldogs Plus or whatever to get the full access to.
- 2:19:47Speaker 2: And it's not been received all that well necessarily, but
- 2:19:53Speaker 2: it's also kind of something we need to grow to expect.
- 2:19:58Speaker 2: My hope is that the University of Utah, if they
- 2:20:01Speaker 2: do put things behind a paywall, it'll be new product.
- 2:20:04Speaker 2: It'll be things that we don't get. It'll be true
- 2:20:07Speaker 2: premium stuff. Don't give me a paywall to listen to
- 2:20:13Speaker 2: Morgan Scali's post-game press conference. Don't force me behind a
- 2:20:18Speaker 2: paywall to listen to his weekly press conference or to
- 2:20:22Speaker 2: access the post-practice media availabilities and things like that. Make
- 2:20:27Speaker 2: sure that that is still something that you can, if
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: you're the sort of baseline fan, that you can get
- 2:20:34Speaker 2: free and easy. But in the private equity era, in
- 2:20:39Speaker 2: the maximum profitability era, in the NIL era, where you've
- 2:20:42Speaker 2: got to explore every opportunity you can possibly explore in
- 2:20:46Speaker 2: order to bring more money into these programs, you absolutely
- 2:20:51Speaker 2: 100% need create new avenues. And that could be something where, look,
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: you want to watch practice. You've been complaining about watching practice,
- 2:21:04Speaker 2: not being able to watch practice.
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: Fine.
- 2:21:08Speaker 2: We'll give you X amount of practice film for X
- 2:21:11Speaker 2: dollars a month. You're able to access that. And you're
- 2:21:14Speaker 2: able to watch that. Now you can only do it
- 2:21:16Speaker 2: if everyone's doing it right. Like in the NFL, everyone
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: kind of does it at least in the preseason, but
- 2:21:22Speaker 2: So maybe that's what you'd have to do. Georgia can
- 2:21:24Speaker 2: sort of afford, because no one is going to cancel
- 2:21:27Speaker 2: their season tickets, the Georgia football. They are an elite
- 2:21:31Speaker 2: program with national championship aspirations pretty much every single year now.
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: So they can kind of push. They can stretch.
- 2:21:39Speaker 2: They can flex a little bit to see what the
- 2:21:41Speaker 2: fan base will tolerate and what it will not. I
- 2:21:44Speaker 2: don't know if Utah is fully in that position. I
- 2:21:46Speaker 2: don't know if BYU is fully in that position. Utah State,
- 2:21:50Speaker 2: you can't do that, right? Michigan, you're not going to
- 2:21:53Speaker 2: be able to do that right now. But I fully
- 2:21:56Speaker 2: expect that at some point there will be content from
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: every university that goes behind a paywall where the revenue
- 2:22:03Speaker 2: goes directly to the university itself. Whether it's player podcasts,
- 2:22:08Speaker 2: a special coaches podcast, whether it's content from practices, or
- 2:22:12Speaker 2: in Georgia's case, these highlight packages from a game. Effectively,
- 2:22:18Speaker 2: the Georgia social media manager said, creating these highlights that
- 2:22:22Speaker 2: they put out on their TikTok and on their Instagram
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: and on their Twitter accounts, you got to pay to
- 2:22:28Speaker 2: access some of that now.
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: Would you pay for it if it was University of
- 2:22:33Speaker 1: Utah centric?
- 2:22:34Speaker 2: I think the answer is yes, as long as it
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: was something better than what you're getting right now, better
- 2:22:40Speaker 2: than what you've had to.
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: This point. All right, we got to take a break here.
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: We're going to come back.
- 2:22:56Speaker 2: We're going to give you a couple of, well, we're
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: going to give you a chance to win a couple
- 2:23:00Speaker 2: of Weezer tickets. 801-850, well, nope, 877-353-0700.
- 2:23:08Speaker 1: That's the text line. I almost gave you advanced window
- 2:23:10Speaker 1: products again.
- 2:23:11Speaker 2: You know how confused they would be if a bunch
- 2:23:13Speaker 2: of people are texting advanced window products answers to a
- 2:23:17Speaker 2: trivia question that I randomly brought up? Give me those
- 2:23:20Speaker 2: Weezer tickets. What Weezer tickets?
- 2:23:25Speaker 4: 877-353-0700.
- 2:23:25Speaker 2: I'll give you a question. If you have the answer,
- 2:23:26Speaker 2: you'll get some Weezer tickets. We'll do that next on
- 2:23:29Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show. ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 2:23:33Speaker 8: Let's get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio
- 2:23:37Speaker 8: of ESPN.
- 2:23:37Speaker 4: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:23:44Speaker 2: All right, we'll give away some tickets, and we'll turn
- 2:23:45Speaker 2: you over to Spence Chekits and The Drive. He is
- 2:23:48Speaker 2: at ARUP Blood Services on remote today. He might have
- 2:23:54Speaker 2: some things to give away. Just contribute to a great cause. Obviously, ARUP,
- 2:23:59Speaker 2: a life-saving service done by the ARUP Blood Labs. And
- 2:24:03Speaker 2: sometimes it's not even about the blood donation. Sometimes you
- 2:24:06Speaker 2: need testing done. The ARUP Blood Services, when I was
- 2:24:10Speaker 2: an active fighter, you have to get a blood test
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: all the time. Before fights, make sure that you're clean because,
- 2:24:17Speaker 2: you know, you could be bleeding in there. Every single
- 2:24:21Speaker 2: time I went and got my sample collected, you.
- 2:24:25Speaker 1: Know who you are? I forget your name. That makes
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: me a bad guy.
- 2:24:31Speaker 2: It was the same nurse that would collect my blood
- 2:24:34Speaker 2: and she would mercilessly make fun of my fear of
- 2:24:36Speaker 2: needles every single time. Oh, big tough fighter guy with
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: tattoos and you don't like getting your blood taken?
- 2:24:43Speaker 4: No, I don't.
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: It sucks. Anyway.
- 2:24:52Speaker 3: Are you saying she's probably tougher than you are? Cause
- 2:24:55Speaker 3: she doesn't mind needles.
- 2:24:57Speaker 4: I'm guessing.
- 2:24:57Speaker 1: I guess.
- 2:24:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:24:58Speaker 1: But it's, it's a phobia to fear. Okay.
- 2:25:02Speaker 2: It's a real one. You should respect it. Anyway, we
- 2:25:05Speaker 2: use our tickets. Eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 2:25:08Speaker 2: The U S open quarter final is being played in
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: front of me right now on the television. Andreva versus
- 2:25:16Speaker 2: Coco golf, golf tied up in the second.
- 2:25:22Speaker 3: Set here, up a set tied in the game, but
- 2:25:26Speaker 3: she did or up in the set. She did drop
- 2:25:30Speaker 3: the first set. So this is a drop.
- 2:25:33Speaker 2: The first set needs to win this second set, but
- 2:25:35Speaker 2: it's not over yet, but yeah.
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: She huge.
- 2:25:38Speaker 3: If she can break serve here and win the set
- 2:25:40Speaker 3: and force a third one for sure. Obviously, that's the
- 2:25:43Speaker 3: biggest American star in tennis right now, Coco Gauff.
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: So hopefully she moves on.
- 2:25:51Speaker 2: Last night, men's quarterfinal match went later than they've ever gone.
- 2:25:58Speaker 2: We talked about it earlier on the show today. What time,
- 2:26:04Speaker 2: Eastern time, did the Alcaraz.
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: Versus... What's his name again? Ben Shelton.
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: I almost called him Ben Watson, Alcaraz versus Ben Shelton.
- 2:26:21Speaker 2: What time did the match go final in New York
- 2:26:24Speaker 2: city last night?
- 2:26:25Speaker 3: It was the latest ever. You give it to us
- 2:26:28Speaker 3: in mountain time. You don't get the prize.
- 2:26:30Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:26:30Speaker 1: It needs to be Eastern time.
- 2:26:32Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:26:33Speaker 1: Cause it's, it's later.
- 2:26:34Speaker 2: So, or should I say we will accept a mountain
- 2:26:37Speaker 2: time answer because we are the best time zone.
- 2:26:43Speaker 1: I guess you'll find out. What, what answers I, we already, we,
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: we already got a correct answer. So perfect.
- 2:26:49Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:26:50Speaker 4: Crazy.
- 2:26:52Speaker 2: It was three 33 AM for anyone out there keeping
- 2:26:55Speaker 2: score one 33 here.
- 2:26:58Speaker 1: Which is still late.
- 2:27:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:27:00Speaker 2: Like even if it had been one 30 in New York,
- 2:27:02Speaker 2: that's not three 30. Like for me, Competing or like
- 2:27:09Speaker 2: doing anything energetic, not even necessarily competing.
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: You could do that into the 2 a.m.
- 2:27:14Speaker 9: Hour.
- 2:27:15Speaker 2: Once you're into like past that, it's ridiculous. Some people
- 2:27:20Speaker 2: stay up until 2 a.m. You can't stay up past 3.
- 2:27:24Speaker 2: That's the witching hour, baby. You get from that 3
- 2:27:27Speaker 2: to 5 a.m., everyone should be asleep. It should be
- 2:27:31Speaker 2: a moratorium on everything from 3 to 5 a.m. Everyone
- 2:27:35Speaker 2: should be sleeping. You're not supposed to be trying to
- 2:27:37Speaker 2: finish a tennis match at 3. 3 33 AM. No
- 2:27:42Speaker 2: 150 mile. And that was 148, 148 mile an hour
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: serve to secure the final point for Shelton.
- 2:27:49Speaker 1: Yeah. At 3 33 AM.
- 2:27:51Speaker 3: That's a, that's a lot of caffeine fueling him on
- 2:27:54Speaker 3: that serve. Probably. I, yeah. Reminds me of We did
- 2:28:00Speaker 3: the grad night at Disneyland high school graduation party thing
- 2:28:06Speaker 3: when I graduated. And that's like 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- 2:28:11Speaker 3: or maybe midnight to 6, whatever it was. The park
- 2:28:15Speaker 3: is only open for high school graduates, whatever schools reserve
- 2:28:19Speaker 3: their spot for this.
- 2:28:22Speaker 4: So....
- 2:28:25Speaker 3: We're walking around Disneyland, and people are like zombies, looking
- 2:28:29Speaker 3: like zombies walking around. Or they're asleep on the benches
- 2:28:34Speaker 3: that are just everywhere at Disneyland.
- 2:28:37Speaker 1: Everyone's just out. And those of us.
- 2:28:39Speaker 3: That I somehow stayed awake the whole time, me and
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: my friends, and had a great time, we're just slap happy.
- 2:28:48Speaker 1: Everything's funny. Everything's ridiculous. That was.
- 2:28:54Speaker 3: One of the craziest all-nighter experiences that I've had. That's
- 2:29:00Speaker 3: what happens when you stay up past, like what you're saying,
- 2:29:04Speaker 3: when you stay up that much farther past 2 a.m.
- 2:29:06Speaker 3: You get into 3 a.m. hour, wherever you live.
- 2:29:09Speaker 1: You're starting to get that kind of stuff going on.
- 2:29:12Speaker 2: There are those psycho workout people who sometimes wake up
- 2:29:15Speaker 2: in the 4 o'clock hour, right? There are some people who,
- 2:29:19Speaker 2: even if you work at a bar or something and
- 2:29:20Speaker 2: you get home, you're going to bed probably a little
- 2:29:23Speaker 2: bit before 3 a.m.
- 2:29:27Speaker 1: Three to five?
- 2:29:27Speaker 7: Uh-uh.
- 2:29:28Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 2:29:30Speaker 2: If you wake up at four for exercise, fine. If
- 2:29:32Speaker 2: you're in the military, you got to do it all night, whatever.
- 2:29:35Speaker 2: But the rest of us?
- 2:29:36Speaker 1: Got a morning show maybe in our industry. If you're
- 2:29:38Speaker 1: a tennis player, you shouldn't be playing tennis. Come on,
- 2:29:42Speaker 1: US Open, get it right.
- 2:29:43Speaker 2: All right, big thanks to everyone who listened and participated
- 2:29:46Speaker 2: on the show today.
- 2:29:46Speaker 1: Always love hearing from the listeners.
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: 2579 says, I watched the whole thing.
- 2:29:52Speaker 1: You're crazy. You are nuts. You mean like? this morning.
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: Cause you DVR it.
- 2:29:58Speaker 2: Or Dustin also best time zone, fell asleep on the couch, watching,
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: woke up for the final two games.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 2:30:04Speaker 2: I mean, if you're a mountain time, it's one 30,
- 2:30:07Speaker 2: you're still with them. The realm of reasonability here. Well,
- 2:30:09Speaker 2: it's also, it almost resets things. If you are able
- 2:30:13Speaker 2: to take a couple hour nap, like, like our guy, Dustin,
- 2:30:16Speaker 2: you can go ahead.
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: You you'll be fine at 4.00 AM. Probably. What was the,
- 2:30:21Speaker 1: what was like the six overtime game that got played?
- 2:30:23Speaker 2: Was that in hockey? Where I fell asleep and then
- 2:30:26Speaker 2: I woke up and they were still playing. Like, what's
- 2:30:29Speaker 2: going on here?
- 2:30:30Speaker 3: There's the six overtime that I can think of as
- 2:30:33Speaker 3: the college basketball game. Syracuse-UConn, Big East Tournament, a while
- 2:30:37Speaker 3: back now.
- 2:30:40Speaker 2: In any case, we've gone into overtime here. Stay tuned
- 2:30:44Speaker 2: for The Drive with Spence Check. Thanks for listening. We'll
- 2:30:47Speaker 2: do the Sean O'Connell show again tomorrow. Utah's number one
- 2:30:50Speaker 2: sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
