- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31All right, so let's talk about creativity again, because there
- 0:34are some parts of this I don't want to leave out.
- 0:36So if we're going to do it, we might as well go all the way in.
- 0:39So the next part that I find always fascinating every time I
- 0:43talk to people about creativity is how they'll say, and this
- 0:47really comes up around work situations a lot where they'll
- 0:49say, oh, they want us to have a creative response.
- 0:52And I have a regular listener who's going to laugh when he
- 0:55hears this because we've actually talked about this,
- 0:59where they want them to be creative.
- 1:00They want them to take on a project, and then they give them
- 1:04impossible instructions. So it becomes like, hey, we want
- 1:11to pick your brain and we want you to give us ideas, but we
- 1:16want you to keep your framework around what we tell you.
- 1:20And my friends, that's not creativity.
- 1:23That's not creativity. Creativity is full flowing, free
- 1:27flowing back and forth all over the place where you choose it to
- 1:30be. It is not a a comeuppance of
- 1:35like, oh, these are the rules around it.
- 1:37They can give you a bunch of stuff and they can say, hey,
- 1:40here's what we want you to know in the process.
- 1:43And they can give you some parameters, but then they have
- 1:48to let it flow. And so often for so many
- 1:51companies, it is so hard for them to do that.
- 1:56And it's such a critical leadership mistake because if
- 2:01you pay attention to the fact that you just let everybody run
- 2:04with it and see what happens, the statistics show that
- 2:09amazingly, if you just let people go and be creative on
- 2:13their own, they always come back with more powerful things.
- 2:17Now, may you have to see through them.
- 2:19Of course, you have to sift through it, see it.
- 2:21It's like, OK, what do we have here?
- 2:23Would there be tweaks? Yes.
- 2:24But would you be getting really raw creativity?
- 2:27Oh, yeah, you would. And it wouldn't be within the
- 2:30boundaries that it is when like here are the instructions.
- 2:34So if you are being feeling like you're stifled and you're put
- 2:38into a situation where someone saying we want your creative
- 2:40solutions and here are the instructions and then you feel
- 2:45just blah, like this is heavy. This sucks.
- 2:49I don't like this. Look at these things.
- 2:52And I, I, the, the, my regular listener that I was talking
- 2:56about actually sent me some stuff and I looked at it and I
- 2:58was like, Oh my God, this is confusing to me.
- 3:00How could any human even want to do this?
- 3:03Because the instructions are so impossible that the creativity
- 3:07goes right out the window because it's like, oh, this is
- 3:10not a job for me. This is a job for logic.
- 3:12This is a job for another emotion.
- 3:14This is not my job. It's above my pay grade and it
- 3:16takes off. And then there you are sitting
- 3:19there wondering what the hell just happened.
- 3:21Well, what happened happened was very reasonable because the
- 3:23instructions don't come with that.
- 3:26So point is, if you have those situations, you can say, OK,
- 3:32what if I put that aside? What if I put the instructions
- 3:36aside and I just look at what outcome I need, look at the
- 3:39outcome, ask the questions, let your creativity completely flow
- 3:43void of the instructions and see what shows up.
- 3:47Then you can always go back and say, OK, now let me filter that
- 3:51through their instructions. But sometimes when you reverse
- 3:55engineer it, it's much easier for it to come out.
- 3:58In fact, most times it's much easier and then you can see if
- 4:01it fits. Now, truth be told, there are
- 4:04many times that you cannot make it fit in the box they want.
- 4:08However, good leadership will take it on and say, OK, let me
- 4:12look at this. Let me really see if there's
- 4:15something here that I can work with this person on and not make
- 4:18you wrong for it. Good leadership is hard to find
- 4:21my friends, but I'm just saying at least you know you're not off
- 4:25target when you go at it that way and you try to reverse
- 4:27engineer it. There are huge gifts in that.
- 4:30So that being said, don't be afraid to try it.
- 4:33Now. It does take overriding some of
- 4:36the things that are already in your head that you quote UN
- 4:39quote know because you've read the instructions and you've
- 4:41gotten aggravated with them. You know what's there and you're
- 4:44like, oh, damn, this is terrible.
- 4:46I don't want to do this and you, so you've got to be out of that
- 4:49emotion in order to do this. You've got to go in a different
- 4:52path. You've got to approach it like,
- 4:55OK, let me put all that aside. Let me get very clear.
- 4:58I'm in my creative mode, you know, bring out the tools that
- 5:02bring out creativity. You know, you've heard me say
- 5:03this before. If you play with Play DoH, bring
- 5:06out Play DoH. If you like crayons, color
- 5:08first, if you do Legos, build Legos and then do this because
- 5:12then you'll be in your organic creative mode and then you run
- 5:16with it. But don't allow them to rob you
- 5:19of that feeling because it is brilliant.
- 5:21It it is pure bliss when you can do that and just take it from
- 5:25that state of what would I do if I didn't have instructions?
- 5:29OK my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you
- 5:32tomorrow. Bye.
