- 1:14Speaker 3: We're going to be there on Monday for the Eagles
- 1:16Speaker 3: pregame before the Eagles and the Bears. We're breaking it
- 1:20Speaker 3: down and we're taking a look today at what to
- 1:23Speaker 3: expect from the Bears. You know, the last time these
- 1:25Speaker 3: two teams played... what to expect from the Bears. They
- 1:29Speaker 3: beat you up. They physically beat you up. They manhandled
- 1:32Speaker 3: the Eagles. Kyle Menungai had a huge day, and they
- 1:36Speaker 3: ran the ball all over the Birds. Will that be
- 1:40Speaker 3: a similar recipe this time around? Let's break it all down.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Adam Kaplan's here from the Inside the Birds podcast as
- 1:46Speaker 3: he joins us here on today's Football at Four on
- 1:49Speaker 3: the Sports Bash. Adam, what's going on, my brother?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Mike, good to talk to you. Yeah, it's really remarkable.
- 1:55Speaker 2: That game... i couldn't match with the kids you said
- 1:58Speaker 2: when they gave up to one of our one of
- 2:01Speaker 2: your rushers in the first half but i'd like to
- 2:02Speaker 2: mention before we go dot rich left but what what
- 2:06Speaker 2: what are your from the first half of that was
- 2:07Speaker 2: just embarrassing now dot that was when jordan uh... she's
- 2:11Speaker 2: a joke or had a bad shoulder that shoulders i
- 2:14Speaker 2: should say they should not have played now the issue
- 2:18Speaker 2: is okay what do you do this time around they
- 2:21Speaker 2: run game came running back The only difference is he's
- 2:24Speaker 2: got a new center now. Bradbury, former second runner from Minnesota,
- 2:29Speaker 2: is undersized. You can move him. That's a guy that
- 2:33Speaker 2: the Eagles will match him very well with, but they're outstanding.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Mike at right tackle with Darnell Wright. He's been an
- 2:39Speaker 2: absolute superstar. Jonah Jackson survived his career after being traded
- 2:42Speaker 2: for the Rams after he got benched. Joe Tooney's another guy.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Remember when the Eagles destroyed him in the Super Bowl?
- 2:47Speaker 2: He had to play left tackle in the 24 Super Bowl. Yep. Well,
- 2:51Speaker 2: he was elite last season, got his contract redone. Braxton
- 2:55Speaker 2: Jones is okay. They were hoping Ozzie Trapilo, a second-rounder
- 2:58Speaker 2: last year out of BC, would take the job. He didn't.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So there's some matchups there, but it's all about Ben Johnson.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And one thing you've got to know, people looking at
- 3:07Speaker 2: the run game last week, folks, do you know they
- 3:08Speaker 2: could run the ball? It was raining the entire game.
- 3:11Speaker 2: absolute flop fest. Throw that out. Monday night, by the way,
- 3:14Speaker 2: mid-60s at game time, no rain. It's going to be
- 3:16Speaker 2: nice to run the football.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Well, their offense is going to be different because of
- 3:20Speaker 3: the quarterback situation here. It looks like it could be
- 3:23Speaker 3: a third-string quarterback, Case Keenum, getting the call.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they're crazy, Mike. They faced him nine years ago,
- 3:30Speaker 2: Case Keenum. He goes to the 17th championship game. Tyson
- 3:34Speaker 2: Bajent was in their building today, but he did not practice.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So if he doesn't practice tomorrow, obviously he won't even dress.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So Case Keenum right now is taking all the ones.
- 3:44Speaker 2: The Eagles know him, obviously, from facing him. Of course,
- 3:48Speaker 2: the coaching staff has changed, and a lot of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: players have changed. But he's played most of his career
- 3:54Speaker 2: in a West Coast offense. Could scramble around a little bit.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Older player, new to the end of his career. This
- 4:01Speaker 2: obviously stands great for the Eagles. Decent athlete, average arm,
- 4:06Speaker 2: very good moxie, toughness. Great story. Represented by a guy
- 4:10Speaker 2: who went to my high school. Jake Presser, a representative
- 4:13Speaker 2: in Tyson Bajan out of Shepard. Did you ever hear
- 4:16Speaker 2: of that school?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah, West Virginia.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Oh, it's because you went to West Virginia. I never
- 4:22Speaker 2: heard of it until Bajan won that number two job
- 4:24Speaker 2: a couple years ago and got a nice contract extension. Look,
- 4:28Speaker 2: the Eagles have to beat this offensive line. Braxton Jones
- 4:31Speaker 2: is an average left tackle. They're going to match up
- 4:33Speaker 2: great against Garrett, Bradbury, Mike. I like those matchups. So
- 4:37Speaker 2: that's where they could take advantage of it, but what
- 4:39Speaker 2: they can do now they're going to play a ton
- 4:41Speaker 2: of twelve personnel they're super loaded with close to what
- 4:44Speaker 2: was required to pressure a pic from last season call
- 4:47Speaker 2: committed to the white and care about they really did
- 4:50Speaker 2: the uh... a lot of people shock when they get
- 4:51Speaker 2: to the program that uh... that that uh... throughout but
- 4:54Speaker 2: they'll play a ton of twelve personnel when they go
- 4:58Speaker 2: up and it took wrote roman duncan luther burn their
- 5:00Speaker 2: secular mizzou last year clinton has got after a great
- 5:04Speaker 2: start with a special case return a brief for slot
- 5:07Speaker 2: receiver so they're going to run a lot of 12,
- 5:10Speaker 2: some 11, and I'm very interested because with the weather
- 5:14Speaker 2: going to be great, Mike, this is by far the
- 5:16Speaker 2: best offense they're going to follow. It's not just the
- 5:18Speaker 2: run game now, don't. I know that they don't want
- 5:20Speaker 2: to kick you in front of the ball a lot,
- 5:21Speaker 2: but they do have the pass target group.
- 5:24Speaker 3: That will be, by the way, Shepard is a Division
- 5:26Speaker 3: II school in West Virginia, which is right on the
- 5:29Speaker 3: border of Maryland. I didn't know that, really. Yep, it's
- 5:33Speaker 3: right on the border of West Virginia and Maryland down south. But, yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 3: Bajet obviously gives them a little bit more mobility, and
- 5:42Speaker 3: they like him in there. I just, you know, I
- 5:45Speaker 3: was wondering earlier this week, you know, you have Case Keenum,
- 5:47Speaker 3: a guy who's seen a lot. Bajet maybe gets a
- 5:50Speaker 3: little confused by some Fangio stuff, and then they are
- 5:53Speaker 3: almost forced to run the ball, right? I mean, it's like, ah,
- 5:56Speaker 3: Keenum is so limited at this stage, we're going to
- 5:58Speaker 3: just run the ball. And that was a problem for
- 6:00Speaker 3: them the last time they played. They could not stop
- 6:02Speaker 3: the run, and that's going to be a big factor
- 6:04Speaker 3: in this game. Will the Bears stick to the run?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Oh, that's Mike. A couple things you need to know
- 6:11Speaker 2: about this on your question. Ben Johnson, the head coach
- 6:14Speaker 2: of Colts of Plays, he actually designs the run game.
- 6:16Speaker 2: He's in charge of it. That never happens. A head coach,
- 6:21Speaker 2: not only it's his offense, but he designs the run game.
- 6:24Speaker 2: That's unheard of. It's sophisticated. It's not easy. Very unique motion.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Colt Comet's actually number 85. You're going to see him.
- 6:33Speaker 2: He's actually what we call an athletic wide tight end.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I love when it's a super athlete who was the
- 6:38Speaker 2: first runner last year. And look, they're not going to
- 6:40Speaker 2: face Caleb White. He's not playing, Mike. I don't care
- 6:42Speaker 2: what Ben Johnson says. He knows he's not playing. So
- 6:46Speaker 2: it's funny. He caught a weak week, but he wouldn't
- 6:48Speaker 2: rule him out. I mean, come on, man. Really? This
- 6:50Speaker 2: is ridiculous. They're not going to risk a, even if
- 6:53Speaker 2: it's a grade one hamstring strain. So look, again, as
- 6:56Speaker 2: I outlined, it's not going to be easy. They do
- 6:59Speaker 2: some very unique things. Very unique motion. And they blocked
- 7:03Speaker 2: great for the run game throughout the Minnesota game last week.
- 7:06Speaker 2: No one could run in. It didn't rain last week.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But conditions will be ideal to do whatever they want
- 7:11Speaker 2: to do. And it's going to be fun. I really
- 7:12Speaker 2: look forward to this.
- 7:13Speaker 3: All right. When you look at what to expect from
- 7:16Speaker 3: the Bears wide receivers, which wide receivers stick out there?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so Luther Byrne is really explosive. He's a second-round
- 7:25Speaker 2: pick from last year out of Missouri. But Ben Johnson,
- 7:29Speaker 2: talk him up. He thought he could be a breakout
- 7:31Speaker 2: player for them. I know in fantasy, people were on him.
- 7:35Speaker 2: But remember, they've only played two games last week. Throw
- 7:37Speaker 2: it out because of the rain. Robert Jones made a
- 7:39Speaker 2: first-round pick in 24. He needs to be– I'm a
- 7:43Speaker 2: little bit– I've been a little bit underwhelmed by him.
- 7:45Speaker 2: He's a talented guy. He's got a great size. Burns
- 7:48Speaker 2: is a move receiver. And then Clifford will be their
- 7:51Speaker 2: slot receiver, Mike. So that's pretty much their offense. They're
- 7:55Speaker 2: a loaded band, but defensively is where I think the
- 7:57Speaker 2: Eagles' offense versus the Chicago defense, where the Eagles are
- 8:00Speaker 2: going to have a lot of advantages.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We're talking with Adam Kavanaugh for football at four, and
- 8:04Speaker 3: we'll look at that defense. By the way, Burden used
- 8:07Speaker 3: to be last year in the game. A young guy
- 8:09Speaker 3: had 22 carries for 130. Swift had 18 carries for 125.
- 8:13Speaker 3: They only had a receiver, had three catches for 36 yards,
- 8:17Speaker 3: was the leading receiver.
- 8:18Speaker 2: They needed to do it. Yep. Yeah, three for 36.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Who had the three for 36?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Komet had three for 36, and Burden had four for 33.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Jeez, jeez, that's just– if you just gave the passing
- 8:31Speaker 2: numbers out, you told someone who didn't know anything about football, go,
- 8:33Speaker 2: they must have got blown out. No, because the run
- 8:35Speaker 2: game was so good.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Well, the one area I'm interested in is their offensive line.
- 8:39Speaker 3: You know, the Eagles have played Tennessee and Washington, two
- 8:41Speaker 3: offensive lines that are shaky. And this Chicago offensive line,
- 8:46Speaker 3: where do they kind of stack up? versus the first
- 8:48Speaker 3: two teams they've seen.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Well, Mike, as I said, the matchup is the center,
- 8:53Speaker 2: Garrett Bradbury. You can beat him. He's a smaller guy.
- 8:55Speaker 2: The only reason why he was traded for is because
- 8:57Speaker 2: Drew Dolman, their center, shockingly retired. So that's an area, Mike,
- 9:02Speaker 2: that they're going to have an advantage. So this is
- 9:04Speaker 2: going to be a fun game now because of the
- 9:07Speaker 2: situation right now with Case Keating taking all the ones.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Bajan's going to have to take all the ones tomorrow
- 9:11Speaker 2: to be able to play. The fact that he's in
- 9:14Speaker 2: the building, they give him a chance. So we'll see
- 9:16Speaker 2: what he does tomorrow.
- 9:17Speaker 3: All right, defensively, what kind of scheme do the Bears,
- 9:20Speaker 3: can you expect from the Bears? Because last year, Philadelphia,
- 9:22Speaker 3: 15 points in the game against Chicago.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting. And Dennis Allen, the former Saints head coach, look,
- 9:29Speaker 2: he wasn't a good head coach. They're not the most
- 9:31Speaker 2: talented team, but they execute really well. They run a
- 9:33Speaker 2: 43 front. It's interesting. The Eagles know that a lot
- 9:38Speaker 2: of these players, well, they faced Grady Jarrett before, who
- 9:40Speaker 2: was cut by the Falcons two years ago. And he's
- 9:43Speaker 2: done a fine job. He's near the end of it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: it is clear could take a street for me to
- 9:46Speaker 2: go by the way uh... he's he's having a start
- 9:50Speaker 2: because they they they're white they've a couple injuries at
- 9:52Speaker 2: the tackle but that's where the number that people still uh...
- 9:57Speaker 2: who the commander excuse me the bears are quite a
- 9:59Speaker 2: couple years years ago. It's what we call a power rusher,
- 10:02Speaker 2: non-explosive on the other side, a diode denbo, who tore
- 10:07Speaker 2: his Achilles late last season. This is a hard injury
- 10:09Speaker 2: to come back from. They have an average defensive line.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Linebacker Devin Bush, who revived his career with Cleveland last season,
- 10:15Speaker 2: and old friend T.J. Edwards, Mike, so the front seven's okay.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Where they're interesting is because they've got a lot of injuries, Mike.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Tyreek Stevenson, who's one of their starting quarters, hamstring injury.
- 10:30Speaker 2: He got a little surprise because Ben Johnson also called
- 10:33Speaker 2: him week-to-week, but he started working today. So I thought
- 10:36Speaker 2: that was kind of interesting. Limited by Jalen Johnson's really good,
- 10:39Speaker 2: number 20. Excuse me, number one. He was a first-round
- 10:42Speaker 2: pick in 2020. By far the best defensive back. And
- 10:47Speaker 2: then what happens is, because they've got injuries, it's safety.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Cam Lewis was a dime safety and nickel safety for
- 10:58Speaker 2: the Bills for many years. He now is starting. Dylan
- 11:01Speaker 2: Fenneman was a first-round pick out of Oregon. So, Mike,
- 11:05Speaker 2: as we finish this off, this is a good matchup
- 11:09Speaker 2: for the Eagles offense. And you know what? The Eagles'
- 11:12Speaker 2: protection is not the problem. The run game has been
- 11:14Speaker 2: absolutely atrocious. Yeah. If they could just be average in
- 11:18Speaker 2: the run game, and we'll see about Barkley. I know
- 11:20Speaker 2: he worked some yesterday, and I know he's still wearing
- 11:23Speaker 2: the neck brace. Let's see what happens. But they've got
- 11:27Speaker 2: to run the ball. Hurts has been lighted out. That's
- 11:29Speaker 2: not the problem. They've got to be able to run
- 11:30Speaker 2: the ball better, at least run it average.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Before we wrap up here, Adam, usually at this time
- 11:36Speaker 3: on a Friday, the injury report for the Sunday game
- 11:38Speaker 3: comes out. We don't have the Friday practice report, but
- 11:41Speaker 3: you had Barkley limited and Bigsby and Shipley both down.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Did not practice yesterday. And, of course, Devontae Smith with
- 11:48Speaker 3: a hamstring. And Goddard, we know, is not going to play.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But that first injury report yesterday was not encouraging.
- 11:56Speaker 2: No. So, our injury to check, I'm looking at what
- 12:01Speaker 2: he has out there. Barkley, Bixby, and Shipley are in
- 12:05Speaker 2: uniform and doing some work. So, let's see what happens
- 12:08Speaker 2: on your point.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Bixby was out of abdomen yesterday, and Shipley was afoot.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, four players were added to the
- 12:14Speaker 2: introvert who were not on it last week. Smitty, Bixby, Shipley,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and Steen. Steen will play. He's got a shoulder issue,
- 12:21Speaker 2: but he'll play. Yeah, he was cool yesterday. Yeah, so.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Do you think Bernard will play?
- 12:29Speaker 2: I would be surprised if he did. Now, let's see
- 12:31Speaker 2: what he does today. As I told people last week,
- 12:34Speaker 2: the day that he has a full practice, as long
- 12:37Speaker 2: as you have a setback, expect him to play. Got
- 12:40Speaker 2: to see what he does today. He's got to practice more, Mike.
- 12:43Speaker 2: He just has to practice more. And I cannot tell you,
- 12:46Speaker 2: as we end this talk today, how badly they need him.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Their pass rush is not getting home. They don't have
- 12:53Speaker 2: a finisher. Hunt had a great training camp. He's not
- 12:55Speaker 2: finishing rushes. They badly need someone who can finish a
- 12:59Speaker 2: rush and throw the quarterback down. They've not been able
- 13:00Speaker 2: to do that, Mike. Let's call it what it is.
- 13:03Speaker 3: You think Ertz will play?
- 13:07Speaker 2: I believe that he knows he can play. He feels
- 13:10Speaker 2: that his reality has gone great. Remember, Mike, because I
- 13:12Speaker 2: told you Tuesday, whenever I talk to you last, I
- 13:15Speaker 2: think this story broke. Yeah, it did then. I thought
- 13:19Speaker 2: it did. My understanding was that they've been in touch
- 13:22Speaker 2: for several weeks. You also know that his rehab has
- 13:25Speaker 2: gone great. Now, if he plays, Mike, he can't play
- 13:29Speaker 2: a lot. If he does limit him to just passing downs,
- 13:34Speaker 2: he would obviously have to be able to limit snap count.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And Zach talked about, it's pretty funny if you heard
- 13:40Speaker 2: his interviews, You know, this is West Coast terminology, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: he hasn't been to the West Coast in a while
- 13:45Speaker 2: in the way that they call it. So he needs
- 13:47Speaker 2: to learn. He needs to get kosher with the place
- 13:53Speaker 2: and the terminology. But, Mike, now do they need Eckert?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Do they need to add another kid, a younger tight
- 13:59Speaker 2: end who can move?
- 14:00Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 14:00Speaker 2: They're a little short of a tight end, Mike. Let's
- 14:02Speaker 2: call it. They need another tight end.
- 14:04Speaker 3: And, obviously, he was at practice today. So we'll see
- 14:07Speaker 3: what Earth does. Kenny Moore, obviously, we talked about him
- 14:10Speaker 3: on Tuesday. We'll see if he is also active for
- 14:12Speaker 3: game day on Monday Night Football, which you can listen
- 14:15Speaker 3: to right here on 97.3 ESPN. Football 4 with Adam Kaplan, everybody.
- 14:20Speaker 3: He's back on Tuesday breaking down the birds and the
- 14:23Speaker 3: bears here on Football at 4.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Thank you, man. Thank you.
