0:34
Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
0:36
Speaker 5: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carlee and we are
0:39
Speaker 5: here with Let's Talk. And I have in the building.
0:42
Speaker 5: I have both of my co hosts, Hollis Lewis Hello,
0:45
Speaker 5: and Lisad Lisa.
0:49
Speaker 6: We're as a great start.
0:51
Speaker 5: To my god, this has been a little challenging going forward,
0:54
Speaker 5: or at least that we have a guest and I think
0:56
Speaker 5: you're going to introduce her.
0:58
Speaker 6: Yes, yes, we do so. Today we are honored to
1:01
Speaker 6: be joined by a trailblazer for West Virginia's capital city.
1:06
Speaker 6: Never gets old for me to say this, our first
1:09
Speaker 6: female mayor of the City of Charleston. Welcome to the podcast.
1:13
Speaker 6: Amy Schuler Goodwin.
1:15
Speaker 7: Thank you so much. I'm the first, but I won't
1:17
Speaker 7: be the last. That's what I always say. Nobody says
1:20
Speaker 7: that first but not last, and that's okay.
1:22
Speaker 3: Okay, But let me ask you this.
1:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, when you hear that, when that like, when you
1:26
Speaker 5: hear somebody say that, what does that?
1:30
Speaker 3: What does it mean to you? How do you feel
1:32
Speaker 3: when you hear that?
1:33
Speaker 5: Because that's got to be I mean, you have to
1:36
Speaker 5: recognize the relevance and importance of it, Like where do
1:40
Speaker 5: you take it when you hear it?
1:42
Speaker 7: So delegate knows how when I say this, you want
1:44
Speaker 7: me to give you the real real? Yeah, my children
1:47
Speaker 7: now say that, mom, women to give you the real real.
1:50
Speaker 7: I'll give you the real real. When it first happened,
1:53
Speaker 7: I think when I was running years ago, I actually
1:57
Speaker 7: didn't allow it to absorb in my brain as I
2:00
Speaker 7: thought I didn't want to let people down, especially if
2:02
Speaker 7: I didn't win. And then when I won, because I
2:05
Speaker 7: think always in our life, when we're in public service
2:08
Speaker 7: or and you're in some public position, you have a tagline.
2:11
Speaker 7: What is your tagline? What is the thing that people
2:13
Speaker 7: say about you? Right? And so initially I went, I
2:17
Speaker 7: don't know if I want that just to be my tagline?
2:20
Speaker 7: And then ready it was hand to the heavens. And
2:25
Speaker 7: many of you have been in my conference room. There
2:28
Speaker 7: is a wall that they have done over the years
2:31
Speaker 7: in the history of the city of Charleston. I didn't
2:33
Speaker 7: know this, but in the conference room it has sixteen
2:36
Speaker 7: by twenty pictures of every single mayor in the history
2:40
Speaker 7: of our city. And literally my first age job. They said,
2:44
Speaker 7: you have a sixteen by twenty photo and I was like,
2:45
Speaker 7: you mean, like in my back pocket, you only sixteen
2:47
Speaker 7: by twenty photos I have of my children literally, not
2:51
Speaker 7: even my husband, you know, my children. They said, well,
2:54
Speaker 7: you need one of you, and they put it up
2:56
Speaker 7: and they put me in the middle. But I didn't
2:57
Speaker 7: realize we were supposed to give in black whites. It
2:59
Speaker 7: was in color. And so there's a wall in the
3:03
Speaker 7: mayor's office that has a picture of every single one
3:05
Speaker 7: and it is it is now striking to look at
3:09
Speaker 7: and every single person I have who comes and it
3:11
Speaker 7: has been seven years without fail, carl people walk in
3:15
Speaker 7: the room and they say, oh wow, huh. And so
3:20
Speaker 7: it doesn't have I mean, it says little to do
3:23
Speaker 7: about me and everything to do about the city. That
3:25
Speaker 7: they said, hey, wait a minute, we want a female
3:28
Speaker 7: in office. There had to have been something, and I
3:30
Speaker 7: think it whether it be the things that I said
3:34
Speaker 7: or the things that we did during the campaign. But
3:38
Speaker 7: I always like to know that I am proud of
3:41
Speaker 7: being the first, and I am proud that that is
3:43
Speaker 7: my tagline. And I am thrilled to this day when
3:46
Speaker 7: people say it, because dads bring up their little girls
3:48
Speaker 7: to me all the time and say, can I get
3:51
Speaker 7: a picture with my girls with you? And that is special.
3:54
Speaker 7: It still gives me chill bumps to this day.
3:56
Speaker 8: And not only the first. And I'm not saying it's
3:59
Speaker 8: the buddy up because we're friends, but also.
4:01
Speaker 7: You can battle them up. It's been a long day.
4:03
Speaker 8: That's a long day, but also one of the most effective.
4:06
Speaker 8: And I think that again, when we look at the
4:08
Speaker 8: city of Charleston, we look at what it was in
4:11
Speaker 8: twenty thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and then when we look at
4:14
Speaker 8: it now, it's not only a downtown representative of a
4:18
Speaker 8: capital city, but it has become the downtown of West Virginia.
4:23
Speaker 8: In addition to you know, the amazing events that are
4:27
Speaker 8: happening in the city that we're here to talk about today, Let's.
4:32
Speaker 6: Just get right to it. So we have the USA
4:35
Speaker 6: Cycling Championships here in Charleston, they're slated to continue mayor
4:40
Speaker 6: in Charleston through twenty twenty eight. Is that correct? Okay, So,
4:44
Speaker 6: which that includes Olympic qualifiers. What economic impact do you
4:49
Speaker 6: expect the races to have this year and beyond that?
4:53
Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. So if we just take a quick
4:56
Speaker 7: look back, we're in a three year of a five
4:58
Speaker 7: year contract with USA Side and Pro Road to host
5:01
Speaker 7: the Pro Road National Championships, and so just a quick
5:04
Speaker 7: look back, it was close to a seven million dollar
5:08
Speaker 7: economic impact just for last year. I mean it was
5:13
Speaker 7: and again real, real, real, real the first year we
5:16
Speaker 7: had it, even when we went out to bid on this,
5:19
Speaker 7: I feel confident that I feel confident that even the CVB,
5:25
Speaker 7: Tim Brady and others went, you know what, I think,
5:28
Speaker 7: we know what we're doing here, and we bid out
5:30
Speaker 7: and we know what this is going to be. We
5:31
Speaker 7: saw the videos, we had done research on it. In
5:34
Speaker 7: the first year, I didn't know what it would mean.
5:38
Speaker 7: And so when I say seven million dollar impact, that
5:40
Speaker 7: sounds impressive economic impact and it is right. Hotels, shops, restaurants,
5:45
Speaker 7: they're flooded with people. They run out of food, folks,
5:48
Speaker 7: which is great, great to have them run out of inventory.
5:52
Speaker 7: I can't pay for the national and international attention that
5:56
Speaker 7: we get. I can't afford to pay for the level
5:59
Speaker 7: of recognition that we get when you see the downtown
6:03
Speaker 7: city streets on international programming and national programming that we
6:08
Speaker 7: are a bike city, that we are a city that
6:10
Speaker 7: is welcoming, and that we can host super important here,
6:15
Speaker 7: top level Olympic athletes in an Olympic style event. It is.
6:21
Speaker 7: It's a lot of hard work, it's a lot of money.
6:24
Speaker 7: It's a lot of sponsorship dollars invested in this. Listen,
6:28
Speaker 7: it's a lot of city worker talks, always staying to
6:30
Speaker 7: the delegate, our street crews, our refuse crews, police fire ems,
6:34
Speaker 7: parking res My golly, they were out there early this
6:37
Speaker 7: morning before the sun came up. And so it is
6:39
Speaker 7: a lot of input. But what we get in return
6:43
Speaker 7: is something that you know, we put on a piece
6:45
Speaker 7: of paper. It's seven million economic return. It's much more
6:47
Speaker 7: than that.
6:48
Speaker 8: Now. Now, last year when we had this, or the
6:50
Speaker 8: last time we did have it, it was an Olympic qualifier.
6:53
Speaker 8: So just to put that in perspective, that's international event.
6:56
Speaker 3: That's just not us.
6:58
Speaker 8: It's not just American, right, are even local So for
7:01
Speaker 8: this year's race, happening this weekend.
7:03
Speaker 7: Correct, that's right, it's happening right now. So happened this morning,
7:06
Speaker 7: happened this morning.
7:07
Speaker 8: So what what are they qualifying for the Olympics? Is
7:10
Speaker 8: the World Championships. What's the significance or impact of.
7:14
Speaker 7: Yeah, and so what is so significant about this is
7:18
Speaker 7: if you watched the Paris Olympics and you watched the
7:22
Speaker 7: cycling you saw Kristin Faulkner, who was here in Charleston,
7:27
Speaker 7: West Virginia, win gold, and talk about take your breath away.
7:33
Speaker 7: We were screaming at the television much like some of
7:36
Speaker 7: our w baseball fans are right now. Please let's go
7:41
Speaker 7: because she got there through here. To get to the Olympics,
7:46
Speaker 7: you come through Charleston, West Virginia. And so the folks
7:50
Speaker 7: that you're seeing now, including some of the world's best
7:54
Speaker 7: cycling athletes, are competing for a chance, some of them
7:58
Speaker 7: to race in LA in twenty eight. So they're practicing.
8:03
Speaker 7: They're practicing now. As a matter of fact, this poor
8:05
Speaker 7: young rider last night, I too, carl As you were
8:08
Speaker 7: coming home late, I too was coming home late, and
8:12
Speaker 7: I saw him. He was in his glow gear on
8:16
Speaker 7: his bike peddling up and pedaling up one of our
8:19
Speaker 7: very very steep hills here in the city of Charleston,
8:22
Speaker 7: and I got into the other lane. I slowed down.
8:24
Speaker 7: I wound out my window and very carefully because I
8:26
Speaker 7: didn't want to scare him. I said, thank you for
8:28
Speaker 7: being here. We love having you. And he said, I
8:32
Speaker 7: love being here, Thanks for having us. This is great.
8:34
Speaker 7: He could say all of that while going up. This
8:36
Speaker 7: is the tallest devil. Now you're know right now. The parents,
8:40
Speaker 7: the athletes, the business owners, the spectators, they love like
8:47
Speaker 7: this because it shows the quality of life that we
8:49
Speaker 7: have here in West Virginia. It shows who we are.
8:53
Speaker 7: Our airbnbs are filled, our host family families from across
8:57
Speaker 7: West Virginia say, hey, listen, my kids are in school,
9:00
Speaker 7: got empty bedrooms. Do you want anybody to stay? Because cyclists,
9:03
Speaker 7: I have learned, they sleep with their bikes. And I'm
9:07
Speaker 7: not trying to be funny, like their bikes are in
9:09
Speaker 7: their room. They're fixing them there before they go to bed.
9:12
Speaker 7: They're on them. First thing they do in the morning,
9:15
Speaker 7: they're on them. And so it is. It is comforting.
9:18
Speaker 7: Plus they're extremely expensive.
9:21
Speaker 3: Those cars. Yeah, yeah, it's.
9:23
Speaker 7: Extremely expensive, and so we've we've learned a lot, for sure.
9:30
Speaker 7: But I'll say, Lisa, it is the dollars and cents
9:32
Speaker 7: are incredibly important, and really it's incredibly important for our image,
9:36
Speaker 7: our images of capital city and for the whole Mountain state. Really,
9:40
Speaker 7: have you.
9:40
Speaker 5: Had a personal experience, let's say, with one of the
9:44
Speaker 5: cyclists who that you had a like a i'll say,
9:50
Speaker 5: somewhat of a lengthy conversation with and how proud they
9:55
Speaker 5: were to be here and exciting. And I know you
9:57
Speaker 5: touched on that a little bit, but I think it's
9:59
Speaker 5: really really the reality of someone coming from who knows where,
10:03
Speaker 5: coming to hear Charleston, West Virginia and loving everything about it.
10:10
Speaker 3: How does that? How does that work for you?
10:12
Speaker 7: Well, I'll go I'll go backwards before I go forwards.
10:15
Speaker 7: Christ And Faulkner Olympic gred medalist. She I saw her
10:21
Speaker 7: and last year and she had Olympic rings on her arm.
10:26
Speaker 7: She said, I don't have tattoos. I don't do tattoos,
10:28
Speaker 7: but I did this, and we were like smart girl,
10:31
Speaker 7: that's right. I would have done that, like maybe on
10:34
Speaker 7: my forehead, but I appreciate your modest I got these
10:37
Speaker 7: here what I mean that just kind of makes you
10:41
Speaker 7: get a little choked up. But it is it is
10:44
Speaker 7: the families of the cyclists that really thrilled me. You know,
10:49
Speaker 7: you know this about me, guys, I'm a mayor, but
10:51
Speaker 7: I'm a mom first. And so when I'm standing there
10:53
Speaker 7: and I'm watching the moms and dads and grandparents and
10:55
Speaker 7: aunts and nichos because by the way, they're coming with
10:58
Speaker 7: all of those folks. Yes, because sometimes parents are working.
11:00
Speaker 7: I can't go, but you're going with so and so,
11:02
Speaker 7: or you're going with your coach. And we're standing there
11:04
Speaker 7: watching them and listening to them say. People are almost
11:09
Speaker 7: obnoxious about it, falling all over themselves. What do you need?
11:12
Speaker 7: Can I get you a sandwich? How about another drink?
11:14
Speaker 7: That's just who we are, you know that, you know
11:17
Speaker 7: that in our own neighborhoods, that's how people act. I
11:21
Speaker 7: don't think that we recognize in West Virginia what is
11:26
Speaker 7: happening out there, because when people come here, they just
11:28
Speaker 7: say all the time, I don't know this lady just
11:30
Speaker 7: literally invited me to her house for supper. I'm like, oh,
11:32
Speaker 7: it's Lisa, You're fine. Yeah, like legit, like legit real
11:37
Speaker 7: stories and most important we talk about relationships. And so
11:41
Speaker 7: how did you get us? Say cycling?
11:44
Speaker 6: This is huge?
11:45
Speaker 7: You know how you get it? You got it because
11:48
Speaker 7: we went out after table tennis and Tim Brady and
11:52
Speaker 7: the CVB got table tennis. Y'all ever talk about table tennis? No,
11:55
Speaker 7: you know what table tennis was for US? Twenty different
11:58
Speaker 7: countries and athletes for three weeks. I'm talking about it.
12:02
Speaker 7: Why because that's big money for these athletes to be
12:05
Speaker 7: here for three weeks. You got a great connection. The
12:09
Speaker 7: USA Sports said to USA Men's Volleyball, Hey, Charleston, West Virginia,
12:14
Speaker 7: you might want to take a look at them because
12:16
Speaker 7: I know you've been traveling all over parts of the country.
12:18
Speaker 7: It's really expensive on transportation. By the way, Men's volleyball
12:21
Speaker 7: the year before we got them spent one hundred thousand
12:24
Speaker 7: dollars in their transportation. You know what we spent when
12:27
Speaker 7: we got them. Nothing. And that's how you pitch it.
12:29
Speaker 7: You come here, let us show you what we can
12:31
Speaker 7: do because we will host you in the you know
12:35
Speaker 7: the two hotels that adjoined the Colosseuman Convention Center, and
12:38
Speaker 7: we're going to have this for you downtown. It's walkable
12:41
Speaker 7: it's bikable. You don't have to do anything. So it
12:43
Speaker 7: is also about the cost of doing business here, which
12:46
Speaker 7: is good. And then USA Volleyball turned into USA Cycling
12:52
Speaker 7: and then that relationship. First they said they were great again.
12:55
Speaker 7: Credit where credit is due, the businesses, the supporters, the
12:59
Speaker 7: CBB members, the city team, you can do it. They
13:02
Speaker 7: can rise to the level of this type of event
13:07
Speaker 7: planning an elite athlete event where you're hosting folks that
13:13
Speaker 7: you know what a you know what feeding stations are,
13:16
Speaker 7: and you know how to care for athletes who fall.
13:20
Speaker 7: Shout out to CEMC. Wow, those folks are with us
13:26
Speaker 7: and our EMS crews. Because by the way, this is
13:30
Speaker 7: also something I learned in cycling. You can fall yeah, yes,
13:34
Speaker 7: off of your bike going fifty miles an hour.
13:38
Speaker 8: And that's one thing I wanted to touch on is that
13:41
Speaker 8: if you have not seen these elite athletes ride their bikes,
13:46
Speaker 8: I mean talking about on a curve, yeah, I mean
13:49
Speaker 8: the bike is literally probably at I would say about,
13:52
Speaker 8: you know, sixty seventy degree lean.
13:56
Speaker 3: It is amazing to watch.
13:58
Speaker 8: We talk about all the other things as far as
13:59
Speaker 8: the economic impact and all, you know, all these other things,
14:02
Speaker 8: but when it comes down to it. This is an
14:04
Speaker 8: event in which you have to see for yourself. It's
14:08
Speaker 8: one thing seeing in on TV, but if you're downtown.
14:10
Speaker 8: I was downtown watching them like just zoom by me.
14:14
Speaker 8: It's it's really amazing the level of athleticism that it
14:18
Speaker 8: takes to you know, maneuver that bike through you know
14:21
Speaker 8: the type of terrain, whether they talk about heels or
14:23
Speaker 8: blocks or whatever.
14:24
Speaker 7: And we literally saw athletes fall off their bike, take
14:28
Speaker 7: their sorry skin from their knee to their ankle off,
14:31
Speaker 7: get back on that bike and go another ten miles
14:34
Speaker 7: as fast as they can uphill.
14:36
Speaker 3: It's insane amazing.
14:38
Speaker 5: And you know, every I think every sport, no matter
14:42
Speaker 5: what it is, and I think people lock into football, basketball, baseball,
14:46
Speaker 5: and they you know, all the guy who's playing herd,
14:49
Speaker 5: he's wrapped up and he's going to play hurt. But
14:53
Speaker 5: for the bikers, that moment is now, you know, like
14:58
Speaker 5: you're off your bike, you you hurt something, you're thinking
15:02
Speaker 5: wrapping it up and go.
15:04
Speaker 3: It's not even really a wrap up.
15:05
Speaker 5: It's get on the bike and keep going and thinking
15:07
Speaker 5: about nothing more than winning. I mean, that's the unique
15:12
Speaker 5: side of the mindset of those athletes.
15:15
Speaker 3: Themselves.
15:16
Speaker 7: So something we started a couple of years ago when
15:18
Speaker 7: we began this relationship with USA Cycling is to inspire.
15:23
Speaker 7: You've got to see it to be it right, and
15:25
Speaker 7: so we wanted to make sure that we were contributing
15:28
Speaker 7: in that way. And so every year we give away
15:31
Speaker 7: at least one hundred bicycles Charleston Sternwell Regatta. They're awesome
15:35
Speaker 7: because and it is such a fun event to watch
15:38
Speaker 7: somebody get on their princess bike, first bike she's ever had.
15:42
Speaker 7: Here she gets on our little princess bike and those
15:44
Speaker 7: Olympic athletes pushing them along the way, or the teenager
15:48
Speaker 7: who's never had a bike or outgrew that bike and
15:50
Speaker 7: couldn't get another bike. It's one thing that I think
15:53
Speaker 7: that we do really well. And we're going to do
15:54
Speaker 7: it during our Juneteenth ceremony down at City Center at
15:57
Speaker 7: Slack Plaza. We're going to give away bikes as well
16:00
Speaker 7: there and at Warts. Because you you guys know this
16:05
Speaker 7: better than I do. How many people are going to
16:07
Speaker 7: be Olympic level athletes. How many people are going to
16:10
Speaker 7: play in the NFL, How many people are going to
16:11
Speaker 7: play in the NBA? Probably not many. We know we
16:14
Speaker 7: obviously know some, but but what is so incredible about
16:18
Speaker 7: having an opportunity to watch somebody do this? You're into
16:22
Speaker 7: it now too, aren't you? You're inspired? What is that
16:25
Speaker 7: that's different? It's not basketball, baseball, football, soccer. It's something different.
16:30
Speaker 7: And if I'm not good at those things, am I
16:32
Speaker 7: good at this? And to give it a try? It's
16:35
Speaker 7: it is like our skate park. And I know this
16:38
Speaker 7: is I'm going way off, carl where's the not at all?
16:42
Speaker 7: You're gonna rip me out of my seat. But if
16:45
Speaker 7: we're talking about athletics, and I played sports my entire life.
16:48
Speaker 7: I played in every single sport in high school, including
16:51
Speaker 7: on the men's golf team. But not everybody wants to
16:53
Speaker 7: not everybody's good at it, and we have to make
16:55
Speaker 7: sure that we are, as a city and a state,
16:57
Speaker 7: providing opportunities for kids. You want to buy, that's cool too.
17:01
Speaker 7: You want to skateboard, that's cool too. And I would
17:03
Speaker 7: have never thought in my wildest dreams that our busiest
17:07
Speaker 7: park in the city of Charleston would be our skateboarding park.
17:11
Speaker 7: But it is because those kids didn't have a place
17:13
Speaker 7: to go until we build it for them. And it
17:16
Speaker 7: is packed and by the way, it's the kids who
17:18
Speaker 7: were skateboarding and other kids were like, yeah, I'm not
17:21
Speaker 7: good at football, I'm not good at basketball, but I'm
17:24
Speaker 7: not bad at this. This is okay. And so giving
17:27
Speaker 7: people an opportunity to try something that they normally.
17:32
Speaker 5: Well, player, baseball, whatever, maybe that ends up being their thing,
17:38
Speaker 5: you know. So you know that's but all that's great,
17:41
Speaker 5: you know, and I think that you know, it's something
17:45
Speaker 5: that I think has to spread, keep continuous, continuously spread
17:50
Speaker 5: all over the state and make it great and let
17:55
Speaker 5: people know. So that's one again, one of the reasons
17:57
Speaker 5: why we have you on, just to make sure people
17:59
Speaker 5: here hear this and know that it is available.
18:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, and so Mayor I just wanted to go back.
18:05
Speaker 6: You kind of touched on this a moment ago. But
18:08
Speaker 6: the logistics of having this happen in our city and
18:12
Speaker 6: the outlying parts of the city, you know, how do
18:16
Speaker 6: you manage that with you know, you've got events like
18:18
Speaker 6: Live on the Levee coming up, you mentioned, you know,
18:20
Speaker 6: the Juneteenth celebration and parade, we got rolls on the River,
18:23
Speaker 6: I think, going on, how in the world do you
18:26
Speaker 6: get this all organized and ready to go for these
18:29
Speaker 6: bikers and still include these other special events.
18:33
Speaker 7: We are blessed to have community members who just love
18:36
Speaker 7: it and who are really good at it. And quite frankly,
18:38
Speaker 7: we have a city team that's really good at it.
18:40
Speaker 7: We are good at doing this, and it's one of
18:43
Speaker 7: the reasons why we were able to secure USA Cycling
18:47
Speaker 7: and we are able to host two hundred and twenty
18:51
Speaker 7: five thousand people for the Charles Instrument. Makes me a
18:54
Speaker 7: little worried here. I'm getting a little tickle on my
18:57
Speaker 7: throat because that's just you know, it's just a hops
19:00
Speaker 7: up in a jump down the road. Intense planning all
19:04
Speaker 7: the time at nauseum, going over emergency plans, exit plans,
19:10
Speaker 7: strategy plans of you know, those things are always everybody's
19:15
Speaker 7: top of my tip of tongue. This I'll give you
19:17
Speaker 7: a great example. So on I'm trying to get back
19:21
Speaker 7: into running. Don't ask me why, but anyways, so I'm
19:24
Speaker 7: on the boulevard the other morning at six point thirty
19:26
Speaker 7: in the morning and here are guys with our water
19:29
Speaker 7: buffalo doing our beautiful, beautiful shout out to the Beautification Commission.
19:33
Speaker 7: They're doing a great job and they're watering our flowers.
19:36
Speaker 7: And one of the guys said to me, I said, oh,
19:38
Speaker 7: this looks so beautiful, blah blah blah. He said, yeah,
19:40
Speaker 7: but what are we going to do during USA Cycling.
19:42
Speaker 7: We were just talking about because the guard rails are
19:44
Speaker 7: going to do this, and we got the map out
19:46
Speaker 7: and we were trying to figure if the water buffalo
19:48
Speaker 7: will go on our little four by four will go
19:50
Speaker 7: around that. I was just like, you guys are worried
19:54
Speaker 7: about And by the way, it was only only like
19:56
Speaker 7: seven hanging baskets that are right there in front of
19:59
Speaker 7: had that. Yeah, they were worried about it because they
20:02
Speaker 7: were involved in the planning. And that's the other thing
20:04
Speaker 7: that we do in the city. And again I'm prideful
20:07
Speaker 7: of being I'm only one of seven hundred and thirty employees.
20:10
Speaker 7: I got seven hundred thirty employees. I'm only one of them.
20:12
Speaker 7: They're serious about their job, and those guys were thinking,
20:15
Speaker 7: I'm not going to be able to do my job.
20:17
Speaker 7: This is part of my job and I'm not going
20:18
Speaker 7: to be able to do it. They are involved in
20:20
Speaker 7: every planning meeting. Every single person who touches an area
20:25
Speaker 7: of this event is part of the planning process. We
20:29
Speaker 7: don't just send the directors. We don't just sen I
20:31
Speaker 7: want you involved because if you're working it, we want
20:33
Speaker 7: you to understand what's happening. And I think that's part
20:36
Speaker 7: of it as well, when you include people in that
20:38
Speaker 7: planning process. In addition to USA Cycling doesn't just come
20:42
Speaker 7: in with USA Cycling. They hire professional event management and
20:45
Speaker 7: sport management teams Medalist sports Buddy Oday. You want to
20:50
Speaker 7: see a smooth operation, they know what they're doing, attention
20:54
Speaker 7: to detail because that's all they do. That is all
20:56
Speaker 7: they do. They do cycling, they do marathons, they do
21:00
Speaker 7: they do massive events with a lot of interaction with
21:04
Speaker 7: municipal government and they do a in state government and
21:07
Speaker 7: they do a really good job of event management.
21:09
Speaker 8: It's always impressive and I think a lot of people
21:11
Speaker 8: don't understand that that part of it when you talk
21:14
Speaker 8: about the planning of it, because you have to be meticulous,
21:17
Speaker 8: particularly when it comes to an Olympic qualifier. Right, So,
21:20
Speaker 8: when USA Cycling came and they actually got to do
21:23
Speaker 8: a site visit of the city, how much did our
21:27
Speaker 8: terrain come into play Because we are hilly city. We
21:30
Speaker 8: have hills going up, going down, and again, if you
21:32
Speaker 8: haven't seen somebody go up a ninety degree angle and
21:36
Speaker 8: then come back down.
21:37
Speaker 3: I would advise you to do it with ay with curves.
21:41
Speaker 6: So if they want to see that, they should go
21:43
Speaker 6: to Bridge Road Bike Bash on Sunday. That is the
21:46
Speaker 6: best place to see the last races.
21:48
Speaker 3: Amazing. So okay, so what was their asnes?
21:53
Speaker 7: Yeah, so we were not kidding. We went and I
21:55
Speaker 7: looked back at other races, and I think part of
21:58
Speaker 7: it is when they came, they said, we had just
22:00
Speaker 7: gotten done with doing a big paving cycle, and I
22:04
Speaker 7: was trying to be cute and clever and cute, and
22:07
Speaker 7: maybe I was a little bit when I watched. When
22:10
Speaker 7: I watched their past races and other cities, I looked
22:13
Speaker 7: at their planning designs and processes, and they had this
22:17
Speaker 7: section where we literally watch people and their municipal team
22:21
Speaker 7: turn their greats because you know, the slats go this way,
22:24
Speaker 7: but during the races, you know they have to go
22:26
Speaker 7: this way because I don't want you're tire in it.
22:28
Speaker 7: So when I say attention to detail, buddy, I mean
22:31
Speaker 7: attention attention to detail, and so I just bring that up.
22:34
Speaker 7: Is just another highlight of the point of it's all
22:38
Speaker 7: hands on deck. But when they came in and saw
22:40
Speaker 7: that we were going to do paving a new another
22:42
Speaker 7: new round of paving, infrastructure is important and spending money
22:47
Speaker 7: on infrastructure because they said, honestly, there's this area in
22:51
Speaker 7: this area we've got to redo. We're a little concerned
22:53
Speaker 7: about this. Maybe we've been redoing smooth. Other than that,
22:55
Speaker 7: it's totally great, We're good to go. Okay. That put
22:58
Speaker 7: us to the top of the list. And then being
23:00
Speaker 7: intimately engaged in involved and understanding what they needed from
23:04
Speaker 7: us EMS, road crews, traffic and blocking because let me
23:09
Speaker 7: just say this, we all love it. We love it,
23:12
Speaker 7: we think it is it is absolutely what the city needs.
23:16
Speaker 7: And in my background, I really do and I am passionate,
23:20
Speaker 7: passionate about events. It is not just an event. It
23:24
Speaker 7: is about business development for the city of Charleston, is
23:28
Speaker 7: about true growth. It just simply is. But it also
23:32
Speaker 7: puts people out. People are going to be delayed a
23:34
Speaker 7: little bit here and there. People are not gonna you know,
23:37
Speaker 7: you're going to be at that stop light as those racers.
23:39
Speaker 7: It's a roll enclosure. You're going to wait a minute
23:41
Speaker 7: or two. And so that also is hard for us
23:45
Speaker 7: to manage as well. When you talk about big events
23:47
Speaker 7: like this, we're all standing there in our big right
23:50
Speaker 7: and red and blue and cheering, cheering, But there are
23:52
Speaker 7: people that are late for work, and so we also
23:54
Speaker 7: have to manage expectations about how quickly you're going to
23:57
Speaker 7: get in and out of certain areas. So it's a
24:02
Speaker 7: lot about managing that and knowing that ahead of time
24:05
Speaker 7: and working with the cruise to say, we know how
24:07
Speaker 7: great this is, but we also know that. You know,
24:10
Speaker 7: I think Lightning McQueen said, Robin is racing. Isn't that
24:12
Speaker 7: what that little car said, robs racing?
24:16
Speaker 6: I love that, right?
24:17
Speaker 7: Did you say that a little part?
24:19
Speaker 5: Well, we won't let you get out of here, we don't.
24:22
Speaker 5: We don't want to be we don't want to take
24:24
Speaker 5: you too long. But we appreciate every time that you come.
24:29
Speaker 5: So I'm sure you will be back again for us.
24:31
Speaker 7: I love to a sports show. It just gets me
24:33
Speaker 7: so excited every time I go. You guys are so
24:35
Speaker 7: special and thank you so much. Listen to appreciate, appreciate you.

Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
25:54
Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real talk, real experience,
25:59
Speaker 4: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
26:03
Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
26:05
Speaker 10: Shaking hands is what you do when you're in the
26:08
Speaker 10: little leagues, when you're in JV, when you're trying to
26:11
Speaker 10: teach about you know, hey, treat the game the right way.
26:14
Speaker 10: I don't believe that NBA players or professional athletes have
26:18
Speaker 10: to shake hands. Why why why do I have to
26:22
Speaker 10: do that?
26:22
Speaker 3: I'll answer both for y'all, will y'all fins. No.
26:24
Speaker 10: I think this is a real thing because we see
26:25
Speaker 10: it all the time in college.
26:26
Speaker 3: Back on, they didn't shake hands. They don't respect the game.
26:29
Speaker 10: Why why do I need to shake your hands?
26:30
Speaker 7: That's part of the rule.
26:35
Speaker 6: I don't know if that's what does here's my thing.
26:38
Speaker 10: Well, I don't have to do it because everybody does it,
26:41
Speaker 10: like nobody did make it a rule.
26:43
Speaker 3: I can respect Stephen A. Smith, and when we're done.
26:45
Speaker 10: I don't need to adapt it before our golf set.
26:47
Speaker 3: I'm here to debate him.
26:49
Speaker 10: I'm trying to win a debate, and I think it's
26:51
Speaker 10: the same way with the NBA. I get when Isaiah
26:53
Speaker 10: Thomas and all this thing happened back in the day,
26:56
Speaker 10: but I think it's one of the worst rules for
26:58
Speaker 10: professional sports that I have to show sportsmanship and shake
27:03
Speaker 10: your hand after you beating me in a moment where
27:06
Speaker 10: maybe I don't want to shake your hand.
27:07
Speaker 3: Maybe I don't like you. I don't need to like you.
27:10
Speaker 3: I don't get paid to like you.
27:11
Speaker 10: I get paid to compete against you to win championships.
27:15
Speaker 10: So there's no prerequis hit that says, when the game's over,
27:17
Speaker 10: I need to say, hey, way to.
27:18
Speaker 3: Kick my ass.
27:19
Speaker 10: No, I could take my ass home and I can say,
27:21
Speaker 10: you know, I'll see you next time I see it.
27:23
Speaker 3: When I seen you, I'm gonna come.
27:25
Speaker 10: For you again. I think it's a bigger topic. I
27:27
Speaker 10: think that we're missing a shaking.
27:29
Speaker 6: Hands is okay. So that was our friend Jay Williams
27:34
Speaker 6: on Steven A. Smith's show, and he was just giving
27:38
Speaker 6: us his opinion of the I want to call it
27:44
Speaker 6: handshakegate is what I want to come but anyway, he's
27:49
Speaker 6: referring to, of course, the championship game, the NBA Championship
27:52
Speaker 6: game between the Spurs and the Knicks, and the Spurs
27:55
Speaker 6: refused to shake hands.
27:57
Speaker 3: With specifically victory.
28:00
Speaker 6: Specifically him. So you two, coming from sports and football backgrounds,
28:07
Speaker 6: what is your opinion of Jay Williams and his thoughts.
28:11
Speaker 8: Well, look again, shout out to the Knicks for winning
28:14
Speaker 8: the championship. I think it's gonna be good for basketball
28:16
Speaker 8: that they won. I don't have a problem with it
28:20
Speaker 8: what he said, and in fact, I love it. I
28:22
Speaker 8: think that, particularly like in professional sports, it's too many friends,
28:27
Speaker 8: Like we don't need to be friends. Create drama, create
28:29
Speaker 8: storylines that are on the court, that are basketball specific,
28:33
Speaker 8: that relate to rivalries and different things of that nature.
28:37
Speaker 8: You don't have to shake somebody's hands. I'm sure there's
28:40
Speaker 8: always a level of respect there. These guys a professional athlete.
28:43
Speaker 8: They're competing against one another, and I don't want everybody
28:46
Speaker 8: to be friends. It was fun to watch the Detroit
28:49
Speaker 8: Pistons in the late eighties hate everybody. It was so
28:53
Speaker 8: fun to do that. Now again, I don't think you
28:55
Speaker 8: should be pout and I don't think you do. Like
28:57
Speaker 8: what Cam Newton did in the Super Bowl. You know,
29:00
Speaker 8: a couple of years back, you don't pal, you face
29:02
Speaker 8: the meeting, you go you know we did this, we
29:04
Speaker 8: didn't do that, and then you go home. But I
29:06
Speaker 8: like the rivalry. I like that he's not mister friendly
29:09
Speaker 8: because again, we're gonna sit up here complain about Lebron James.
29:13
Speaker 8: We do this we do that on this show. All
29:14
Speaker 8: he messed the league up, he mixed the competition up.
29:17
Speaker 8: But then we have sort of the anticity of that,
29:20
Speaker 8: we have the opposite of that. Who is by all
29:25
Speaker 8: in counts is going to be a great player. And
29:26
Speaker 8: there's a there's a dog mentality, and sometimes it goes dark.
29:30
Speaker 3: And he got dark. And I love it, Carl, I
29:34
Speaker 3: didn't know. I didn't know.
29:36
Speaker 6: You can I want you to go first.
29:38
Speaker 5: All right, let me let me first say this. I
29:45
Speaker 5: cannot believe that I heard what I heard come out
29:48
Speaker 5: of your mouth.
29:48
Speaker 3: Of it. I just I just can't imagine that.
29:52
Speaker 5: And and let me be clear, playing for me at
29:57
Speaker 5: West Virginia State, you was gonna shake hands, and I
29:59
Speaker 5: thought was the dumbest thad and and and and in
30:03
Speaker 5: that and in that, because here's here's the here's the
30:07
Speaker 5: difference in what sports really is, and especially at the
30:12
Speaker 5: what I'm gonna say, at the youngest levels, it is
30:17
Speaker 5: just fun. But we're talking about the highest I'm gonna
30:21
Speaker 5: get there.
30:22
Speaker 3: I'm gonna get there. I'm gonna get there.
30:25
Speaker 5: So as you grow up and as you change from
30:30
Speaker 5: youth football to middle school, there's a there is a
30:33
Speaker 5: respect for your opponent, whether you like. I don't have
30:37
Speaker 5: to like you on that team, but I have to
30:40
Speaker 5: have a respect because I know you're good. So when
30:43
Speaker 5: the game is over, we've been out there going at
30:46
Speaker 5: it as hard as we possibly can. Whoever wins, that's
30:51
Speaker 5: a that's a done deal. But the respect in which
30:56
Speaker 5: I want to give you because of your skill set.
31:00
Speaker 5: I show that in that handshake. There are guys who
31:03
Speaker 5: I did not like that would be on another team,
31:06
Speaker 5: but when the game was over, I'm still shaking their
31:08
Speaker 5: hand because of the respect of who they are and
31:11
Speaker 5: and the game itself.
31:13
Speaker 8: But you, but your generation can't complain. On one hand,
31:17
Speaker 8: all guys are too friendly. They're not taking it.
31:20
Speaker 3: But you ain't ever hurt me with y'all.
31:21
Speaker 8: Y'all can plain on I'm saying, not you specifically, your generation.
31:24
Speaker 8: Y'all can play on one hand. But then when you
31:27
Speaker 8: have a guy who's probably the ilk of your generation,
31:30
Speaker 8: who's more similar far as mentality, then you can play
31:34
Speaker 8: on that hand.
31:34
Speaker 5: If not, okay, again, let's make clear that's not me
31:38
Speaker 5: but Sterly Sharp I'm playing against him. We are like,
31:44
Speaker 5: at at best, great buddies on the field. At the
31:48
Speaker 5: same time, laughing and joking, but playing at at at
31:52
Speaker 5: the highest level possible, right And that touchdown that he
31:58
Speaker 5: gets on me, what makes that a little bit less
32:03
Speaker 5: is this because the respect that I have for him.
32:05
Speaker 5: So when the game is over, I have no problem
32:09
Speaker 5: shaking his hand and he and and I think, I
32:12
Speaker 5: think sports is not in a space to where winning
32:20
Speaker 5: games is the most important thing that's ever going to happen.
32:24
Speaker 5: Your life is gonna be something bigger and outside of
32:28
Speaker 5: that space. And if you don't understand how to manage that,
32:33
Speaker 5: because you're gonna have, you're gonna be There's no chances
32:36
Speaker 5: that you're gonna go through life and not face somebody
32:39
Speaker 5: that you maybe doesn't don't like.
32:41
Speaker 3: And you're gonna have to.
32:41
Speaker 5: You're gonna have to reach out and touch that, shake
32:43
Speaker 5: their hand and do that. Sports helps you with that.
32:49
Speaker 5: In the worst time, we lose the NFC Championship game,
32:53
Speaker 5: but I have no problem walking across the field shaking
33:00
Speaker 5: a guy's hand who beat me in that game because
33:03
Speaker 5: I respect him and he respects me, And to me,
33:08
Speaker 5: that's it's a disrespect for the opponent that you're playing
33:12
Speaker 5: or the And I won't even say that, yes.
33:17
Speaker 3: I don't. I don't, I don't know. I just don't
33:19
Speaker 3: buy that.
33:20
Speaker 8: Again, go ahead, I'm sorry, I'm just saying like again,
33:24
Speaker 8: we talk about all these things. We talk about the Lebron's,
33:26
Speaker 8: we talk about athletes being too friendly, we talk about
33:29
Speaker 8: all the guys swapping jerseys and your general I'm not
33:32
Speaker 8: saying you specifically, but your generation has so much to
33:35
Speaker 8: say about that, how they hated the guys aren't serious,
33:38
Speaker 8: they don't take it, they don't have passion of the game.
33:40
Speaker 8: Then we see somebody who has a deep passion for
33:43
Speaker 8: the game, and again, at that level, it is about winning.
33:46
Speaker 8: It's not all these life lessons. These are professional athletes.
33:49
Speaker 8: It's about winning and losing. It's about championships. It's about
33:52
Speaker 8: he's trying to assert himself to be in the greatest
33:55
Speaker 8: of all time conversation. That's the type of mentality that
33:58
Speaker 8: Winby has. And I love it. I love the do
34:01
Speaker 8: you love the dirty play? I love it all because
34:04
Speaker 8: we need that in sports because everything.
34:11
Speaker 6: Okay, watch me, okay, okay, watch let me. Let me
34:18
Speaker 6: just throw my two cents in. Guys, if you don't care,
34:20
Speaker 6: I'm gonna I'm gonna play. I'm going to look at
34:22
Speaker 6: both sides here. I feel like I feel like the
34:24
Speaker 6: point that Jay Williams is making or trying to make,
34:26
Speaker 6: is when it comes to those handshakes, you know, it
34:30
Speaker 6: should be authentic versus just ritual. So you know, you know,
34:35
Speaker 6: everybody shakes hands and you do it. You know that
34:38
Speaker 6: that's just part of finishing a game. But but it
34:42
Speaker 6: should should mean something. I think that's what he's trying
34:44
Speaker 6: to say. You know that it's not just something that
34:47
Speaker 6: you do, you should mean it. But in my opinion,
34:50
Speaker 6: you know, as a professional athlete, I get that we
34:53
Speaker 6: want the competition, we want the ribberry, we want the
34:56
Speaker 6: you know, the the heated you know, the back of fourth.
35:00
Speaker 6: But but I think the bigger picture of professional sports
35:05
Speaker 6: is we're setting an example for you, and I think
35:07
Speaker 6: we need to model grace in defeat. You can play
35:11
Speaker 6: as hard and as dirty and mean as you like
35:14
Speaker 6: during the game, but after the game, you show that
35:16
Speaker 6: you know you're you're showing like like Carl said, I'm
35:19
Speaker 6: team Carl tonight. So I hope I don't get fired tonight.
35:21
Speaker 6: I hope tonight I get just for tonight, but just
35:25
Speaker 6: for tonight, Hollis. But I do feel like you know,
35:29
Speaker 6: the NBA does not have like a mandated structured handshake tradition.
35:35
Speaker 6: It's not something that they have to do, so it's
35:37
Speaker 6: a it's a personal choice. But I also think that
35:39
Speaker 6: it can hurt hurt a player's reputation. I mean, I
35:42
Speaker 6: think that sometimes when you you know, it kind of
35:44
Speaker 6: makes you look like that person that is not uh,
35:47
Speaker 6: you're more self centered and more solo and not a
35:50
Speaker 6: team player in my opinion.
35:52
Speaker 8: In my opinion, but player handshake to the other team. Again,
35:58
Speaker 8: we're talking about out the situation in which you have
36:01
Speaker 8: a guy. Again, when we look at sports has they
36:05
Speaker 8: has are currently constructed, there are no more real heated
36:10
Speaker 8: robberies in sports. And it stinks, no, no, no, But here's
36:15
Speaker 8: what I'm saying, though, is that they're not robberies because
36:19
Speaker 8: nobody hates each other. Now like the Bulls hated the Pistons,
36:24
Speaker 8: Lakers hated the Celtics, and vice versa. You know what
36:27
Speaker 8: I'm saying, The Giants hated the Niners, the Niners hated
36:32
Speaker 8: hated the red Skins Redskins, And what I'm saying is
36:34
Speaker 8: that but I realized that they did shake hands after
36:37
Speaker 8: some of them did no.
36:38
Speaker 3: No, no, no.
36:40
Speaker 8: Back in my day, no, sometimes they did, depending on
36:44
Speaker 8: the game, they didn't.
36:45
Speaker 5: All we knew it. I'll make this case the Minnesota Vikings.
36:50
Speaker 5: From the day I got there to the day I left,
36:53
Speaker 5: we didn't win every game, and we lost against some
36:57
Speaker 5: bright every time I lost against the Packers.
37:00
Speaker 3: I'm mad because I.
37:01
Speaker 5: Know, I know, I know that I got to hear
37:06
Speaker 5: it from Sterling Rob. But you know what's gonna happen.
37:09
Speaker 5: I know he's coming, not just him, just the whole
37:12
Speaker 5: team is coming across and we're shaking hands. But there
37:15
Speaker 5: are times when you have six or seven players on
37:19
Speaker 5: opposite teams standing on the field talking after the game
37:23
Speaker 5: because you know what what what we know? What the
37:26
Speaker 5: when you when you start talking professional, what you know
37:30
Speaker 5: is everybody's great, and everybody's gonna win or lose a
37:33
Speaker 5: game when you get done, once you get once the
37:37
Speaker 5: game gets done.
37:38
Speaker 3: But you're not I'm not. I'm not mad at you.
37:41
Speaker 5: I want you to be mad. Look, I'm not talking
37:44
Speaker 5: about all that. I'm not playing about all this like
37:46
Speaker 5: I don't have what I'm saying with you. What I'm
37:48
Speaker 5: saying is I ain't talking about all the life lesson
37:50
Speaker 5: I don't care about that right now I'm talking about
37:53
Speaker 5: I want to see robberies on TV. I don't want
37:57
Speaker 5: everybody friendly and every superstar ain't friendly. Every team versut
38:02
Speaker 5: this team or this conference versu that conference. I want
38:05
Speaker 5: to see heated robberies. I wanted to see the fans
38:07
Speaker 5: have around. I was watching Winning Times about.
38:09
Speaker 8: The Lakers, uh you know, eighty showtime, and they were
38:12
Speaker 8: talking about situations where they were playing in the garden
38:15
Speaker 8: in Boston and they win a game and they got
38:17
Speaker 8: to and the fans are so heated they got to
38:19
Speaker 8: get out there. They're rocking the bus. I want to
38:21
Speaker 8: see passion, and we don't have that in sports them
38:24
Speaker 8: about every everything is so corporate and everything is so clean,
38:27
Speaker 8: and everything is so friendly.
38:28
Speaker 3: It's okay every once in a while to have you.
38:31
Speaker 8: Know, a villain, somebody who's who's gonna buck what's currently
38:35
Speaker 8: going on?
38:35
Speaker 6: And I love it, But don't you Okay, So so
38:39
Speaker 6: let me throw this in there real quick. So do
38:41
Speaker 6: you not agree that it is to go and shake hands.
38:45
Speaker 6: It's a physical acknowledgment of a loss, Like you have
38:48
Speaker 6: to look that that opponent in the eye. You know,
38:51
Speaker 6: you have to to kind of process that this person
38:55
Speaker 6: you know they won, you lost, and and if you
38:59
Speaker 6: don't do that, does that kind of signal a mental thing?
39:01
Speaker 8: The physical the physical indication of the losses the scoreboard.
39:05
Speaker 5: You got whooped, you got whipped, and you was up
39:08
Speaker 5: in every good and again.
39:09
Speaker 6: It's a good will type of gesture. I mean, you don't,
39:12
Speaker 6: you don't want to want to right, you don't wish
39:14
Speaker 6: your will on them, And I'm sure he doesn't.
39:17
Speaker 8: But the Spurs were up in every single game, every
39:20
Speaker 8: single game of that series. They were up probably by
39:23
Speaker 8: double digit at one time of the game, and they
39:25
Speaker 8: got whooped throughout the series. That was a critical beatdown.
39:30
Speaker 8: And I'm sure from all that they did they shake
39:33
Speaker 8: hands prior to I don't. I mean, I don't know,
39:35
Speaker 8: but that's it. So so I'm is they shook hands.
39:40
Speaker 8: I've seen a game or two where they just got left.
39:42
Speaker 8: I've seen I've seen a game some guys left, but
39:44
Speaker 8: most of the most of the game with women be left.
39:46
Speaker 3: Okay, that's that's him, that's his issue. It's so issue.
39:50
Speaker 3: It's great for the sports.
39:52
Speaker 6: Wasn't there're an issue with the w n B A
39:53
Speaker 6: or no, no, no, was that the women's college basketball Championship.
39:57
Speaker 6: Wasn't there an issue about coaches not shaking hands? It
40:01
Speaker 6: was or somebody she got snubbed. Yea, yes, that happened,
40:07
Speaker 6: got snubbed.
40:08
Speaker 5: And again that's that's the that's that's not cursing too,
40:13
Speaker 5: that's that's not what you represent.
40:16
Speaker 3: That's not what you're supposed to bring to your team.
40:18
Speaker 3: Bring it.
40:22
Speaker 5: I just think I just think, okay, so let's just
40:25
Speaker 5: take one of your daughters. What you would You would
40:29
Speaker 5: likely tell them to be a sportsman like as they
40:33
Speaker 5: possibly could in any given sport, right, Yeah, would there
40:38
Speaker 5: ever be a time that you would say, if this happens,
40:41
Speaker 5: don't don't shake nobody's hands, or don't even be nice,
40:44
Speaker 5: I just walk.
40:45
Speaker 8: I think what we're missing is that I don't think
40:48
Speaker 8: he was thinking in his head if we lose, I'm
40:51
Speaker 8: not shaking hands. What I would want for my daughters
40:54
Speaker 8: to have that same level of passion and be wrapped
40:58
Speaker 8: up in their craft to a degree read in which
41:01
Speaker 8: if you lose a game like he lost, where it
41:04
Speaker 8: would be hard for you to deal with in that moment.
41:08
Speaker 3: I want that level of passion. So, like I said,
41:11
Speaker 3: I think.
41:11
Speaker 8: Wenby is the athlete that we need at this time,
41:14
Speaker 8: because we have a lot of athletes who just don't
41:17
Speaker 8: have the level of want to, particularly in the NBA,
41:21
Speaker 8: in the sports that needs.
41:22
Speaker 3: All Right, so what what what the reality to that?
41:25
Speaker 5: What I'm hearing from that, okay, is they can't accept losing.
41:31
Speaker 5: They because they're because they are who they are. They
41:35
Speaker 5: can't accept in the moment, just in the moment, not
41:38
Speaker 5: long term. I'm not saying this is forever. I'm sure
41:40
Speaker 5: he'll get back on the horse. Hell, we'll see next year.
41:43
Speaker 5: When you can't, you can't accept the loss. You can't
41:47
Speaker 5: accept the fact that you lost. So what you're gonna
41:50
Speaker 5: do is you're gonna who you're blaming it on. You're
41:52
Speaker 5: taking it out on the visiting team. So you're taking
41:57
Speaker 5: You're written a lot on that, taking it out on
42:00
Speaker 5: the visit. You just.
42:05
Speaker 3: Taking it out. Let's put a lot on it.
42:08
Speaker 6: Let's move on. Let's move on. Okay, I think we're
42:10
Speaker 6: going to agree to disagree.
42:11
Speaker 3: We all have opinions.
42:13
Speaker 6: Let's talk about w baseball. Let's move on. Let's move on.
42:16
Speaker 6: So the Mountaineers just pulled off. I know this won't
42:19
Speaker 6: air till till later in the week, but they're they're
42:21
Speaker 6: moving on to face number five North Carolina tomorrow at
42:25
Speaker 6: two o'clock. So it's double elimination, So this is it.
42:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, explain that how that works?
42:31
Speaker 6: Double and double elimination. So it's kind of complicated for me.
42:35
Speaker 6: My husband had to explain it all to me. But basically,
42:38
Speaker 6: you are not out of the tournament until you lose twice.
42:43
Speaker 6: And the way that they do it, like the two
42:45
Speaker 6: teams like Troy and West Virginia played before West Virginia
42:49
Speaker 6: one one I believe, and Troy had to play them
42:55
Speaker 6: again because West Virginia lost to North Carolina. So now
42:58
Speaker 6: North Carolina and West Virginia will play again because West
43:01
Speaker 6: Virginia defeated Troy. So it's kind of confusing.
43:03
Speaker 8: West Virginia has to win twice, so they have to
43:05
Speaker 8: beat North Carolina twice.
43:08
Speaker 6: Yes, yes, right, I think so. I think you're right, yeah,
43:11
Speaker 6: because they have to be Yeah, yeah, North Carolina has
43:13
Speaker 6: to have two losses as well. So yeah, it's kind
43:16
Speaker 6: of mind boggling to me, but yeah, that's how it works.
43:19
Speaker 6: But so just focusing on the team, you know, the
43:23
Speaker 6: way that they're playing. I did a little research on
43:25
Speaker 6: the roster they do have eleven seniors, and you know,
43:30
Speaker 6: I was kind of like, when I looked at it,
43:32
Speaker 6: They've got a fifth year transfer from Paul and Paul Showenfeld,
43:37
Speaker 6: who's center field and a real consistent hitter for them.
43:41
Speaker 6: They also have three transfers, Sean Smith, Brock Wheels, and
43:46
Speaker 6: Brody kess Kresser. So when I looked at that, I thought,
43:49
Speaker 6: you know, they've really West Virginia in the baseball world anyway,
43:53
Speaker 6: has taken advantage of the transfer portal to get to
43:56
Speaker 6: where they're going. So what are your ideas about that?
44:00
Speaker 5: Well, my question to my question to that is, okay,
44:03
Speaker 5: so it's super important that if you you have to
44:07
Speaker 5: win now, yes, because with those seniors, unless your plan
44:12
Speaker 5: is is to go back in, you know, because is
44:15
Speaker 5: the depth chart going to be able to be your
44:17
Speaker 5: step up after these guys are gone? Or are you
44:19
Speaker 5: gonna have to go repeat what you just done, go
44:23
Speaker 5: cherry pick and find the best players that you can
44:25
Speaker 5: find and put them on your roster. I think that's
44:27
Speaker 5: the only way that you can That's the only way
44:29
Speaker 5: you could do it.
44:31
Speaker 3: Yeah.
44:31
Speaker 8: Again, I think this is kind of, you know, something
44:34
Speaker 8: that's probably not unique to this year. Of baseball because
44:37
Speaker 8: of the way they get drafted. So these guys, you know,
44:39
Speaker 8: they can lead on their juniors, probably in sophomores and
44:42
Speaker 8: even freshmen because you can go straight out of the
44:45
Speaker 8: high school and get drafted as far as base baseball.
44:48
Speaker 8: So I think, you know, it's one of them things where,
44:50
Speaker 8: you know, baseball is a deep sport, and I think
44:53
Speaker 8: and I love it because I think it's rounding out
44:55
Speaker 8: to those guys are coming to college now, so a
44:59
Speaker 8: lot of the major league teams they've sort of you know,
45:03
Speaker 8: folded a lot of their affiliates in their minor league systems.
45:06
Speaker 8: So I think it would be good, you know, and
45:08
Speaker 8: again not to fold that completely, but I think it
45:10
Speaker 8: would be good, you know, if we can get some
45:11
Speaker 8: of that talent back to the back to college and
45:14
Speaker 8: those guys can stay three, four, maybe five years.
45:17
Speaker 3: So so I really like it.
45:18
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think it's a reflection of, you know,
45:21
Speaker 6: the brilliance of their head coach Steve Sabins to be
45:23
Speaker 6: able to do that what he's done with with the Mountaineers.
45:26
Speaker 6: I mean, of course the coach before, coach Mayze got
45:29
Speaker 6: it all started, but I think he's carrying on, you
45:32
Speaker 6: know Sabans is carrying on the tradition pretty well. And
45:35
Speaker 6: you know, South Carolina. I think he was in the
45:37
Speaker 6: talks to uh to you know, be the South Carolina
45:40
Speaker 6: head coach. Uh, you know, and it didn't happen. I
45:44
Speaker 6: think the West Virginia is going to secure him and
45:45
Speaker 6: he'll be back next year. So it's all good right now.
45:48
Speaker 5: See, And I think I think what's unique about it too,
45:51
Speaker 5: is like you know, not only are you bringing in
45:53
Speaker 5: players that are talented, but they are blending in with
45:57
Speaker 5: your team because some transer like that because sometimes you know,
46:01
Speaker 5: you can get somebody who that doesn't fit maybe the roster,
46:07
Speaker 5: but it seemingly now those guys are just it's fit.
46:12
Speaker 5: I mean, it's a it's a fitting process that they
46:14
Speaker 5: have created there that like, hey man, we can win
46:17
Speaker 5: and anybody. I think going forward, I think it won't
46:21
Speaker 5: be very difficult for them to get players to come.
46:24
Speaker 6: So what do you guys think? Do you think they
46:26
Speaker 6: have a chance? Do you think they can be for sure?
46:28
Speaker 8: I mean North Carolina is a tough team, and I
46:29
Speaker 8: think I want to say, the last time WVU was
46:32
Speaker 8: in this position, they lost to North Carolina.
46:34
Speaker 3: I want to say a couple of years ago, I
46:36
Speaker 3: was there.
46:36
Speaker 8: Yeah, so this has kind of been one of those
46:39
Speaker 8: rivaly situations. And it's cool to talk about college.
46:41
Speaker 3: Sports in June, right, it is cool, you know what.
46:44
Speaker 8: I'm saying, like leading up to what's going to be
46:47
Speaker 8: at the top of everybody's mind, obviously college football, So
46:50
Speaker 8: it's cool to talk about it in June.
46:51
Speaker 3: It's cool to talk about like WVU.
46:53
Speaker 8: Sports when we talk about, as Mayor mentioned, winning the
46:56
Speaker 8: Crown Championship, of the women's team, being in the in
47:00
Speaker 8: the tournament, the rifle team, you know, baseball. Obviously we
47:05
Speaker 8: want to get back in football, so it's cool just
47:07
Speaker 8: to have the state on a stage obviously what we
47:09
Speaker 8: get in soccer a couple of years back. So it's
47:12
Speaker 8: cool to have, you know, our premier university being competitive
47:16
Speaker 8: across a bunch of different athletics.
47:18
Speaker 5: And as a Marshall guy, but more so as a
47:21
Speaker 5: West Virginia guy, I can appreciate watching and realizing how
47:27
Speaker 5: good West Virginia is doing.
47:28
Speaker 3: You can't, you know, there's no way to really kind
47:31
Speaker 3: of swing off.
47:31
Speaker 6: So you're ready to say go Mountaineers, No, let's go.
47:37
Speaker 8: Not have but even Marciall sports right when you talk
47:40
Speaker 8: about the women, talk about they're always good and pretty
47:44
Speaker 8: good in football, you know, the basketball team.
47:46
Speaker 3: So it's like even Marshall, you know, you know.
47:49
Speaker 6: I'm proud of both schools really and athletics.
47:52
Speaker 5: All right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, uh Me and Hollis
47:56
Speaker 5: probably won't be talking until next year.
48:00
Speaker 3: We will be back again next week. We're out
