- 0:00Speaker 1: Land of the Free, the home of the brave.
- 0:03Speaker 2: That is the classic 1968 national anthem as played at
- 0:08Speaker 2: the World Series by Jose Feliciano. That was a major
- 0:12Speaker 2: controversy at the time it was played. I remember I
- 0:15Speaker 2: was watching it and it was not your typical national anthem.
- 0:19Speaker 2: But yet, as time goes on, to me, it's a beautiful,
- 0:23Speaker 2: heartfelt rendition by a A blind musician talking or singing
- 0:28Speaker 2: about all the good things that America has done. And welcome,
- 0:31Speaker 2: welcome to the morning show, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm Tony D'Angelo. I am in for this Tuesday. And
- 0:40Speaker 2: I'd like to pray. We'll get to the program and
- 0:43Speaker 2: we're going to have some fun. Today's prayer. Heavenly Father,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we come before you with humble hearts asking for your
- 0:49Speaker 2: mercy and your peace in this uncertain hour. We lift
- 0:52Speaker 2: up the leaders of our nation and leaders around the world.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Grant them wisdom beyond their own understanding, courage to do
- 0:58Speaker 2: what's right, and discernment that may prevent needless suffering. Guide
- 1:02Speaker 2: every decision with justice, restraint, and a desire for peace. Lord,
- 1:06Speaker 2: we pray for the brave men and women of our military,
- 1:09Speaker 2: our police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and all first responders, including
- 1:14Speaker 2: the officers of ICE. We pray for the working people, too.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Surround them for your protection. Bring them all home tonight.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Strengthen them for the difficult days ahead. Comfort their families.
- 1:23Speaker 2: We ask you to watch over our country. Unite us
- 1:26Speaker 2: in purpose. Calm our fears and remind us that our
- 1:29Speaker 2: ultimate hope is found in you alone. May your peace
- 1:33Speaker 2: rule in our hearts. Your truth guide our nation and
- 1:35Speaker 2: your hand of protection rest upon the United States of America.
- 1:40Speaker 2: In Jesus' holy name we pray.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Amen. And again, I'm Tony D'Angelo. This is the Morning
- 1:45Speaker 1: Show on 94.9 and.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I have a special honor group of the day today,
- 1:50Speaker 2: which is those folks that actually labored on Labor Day.
- 1:53Speaker 2: If you labored on Labor Day, then you are in
- 1:56Speaker 2: the honor group of the day.
- 1:58Speaker 1: On 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But today I've got something, at least to start off with,
- 2:04Speaker 2: that's a little bit more serious, and it comes down
- 2:06Speaker 2: to what can we trust anymore in our systems and
- 2:11Speaker 2: our procedures? I mean, we are lied to so much.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We are obfuscated. We are sleight of handed. were shell-gamed,
- 2:17Speaker 2: were three-card mounting. And this is something, you know, I've
- 2:20Speaker 2: been following, not being an expert, but it has caught
- 2:23Speaker 2: my eye.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Austin J.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Card Grimes was 29 years old on August 29, 2026.
- 2:30Speaker 2: In Fulton County, Ohio, a pickup blew a stop sign
- 2:34Speaker 2: and smashed into his SUV. Troopers charged the other driver,
- 2:38Speaker 2: Washington G. Noah Ochoa, 34, with killing him. Two other
- 2:42Speaker 2: people went to the hospital.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Mr.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Grimes did not come home. What turned a crash into
- 2:48Speaker 2: a fight was the license. United States Senator Bernie Marino,
- 2:53Speaker 2: if you may have heard about this, but if you haven't,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I feel it bears mention again. We did talk about
- 3:00Speaker 2: it on 30 with Tony. We were talking about it
- 3:02Speaker 2: on Next last week. The legitimate systems, I think, want
- 3:07Speaker 2: to have you forget it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: My job is not to have you forget it, but
- 3:12Speaker 1: to remember it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Senator Bernie Marino, United States Senator, said Noah Ochoa was
- 3:18Speaker 2: in the country illegally and was carrying a Connecticut drive-only card,
- 3:23Speaker 2: the special license that Connecticut created in 2013 and started
- 3:27Speaker 2: handing out in 2015. And, you know, it's the typical
- 3:31Speaker 2: Connecticut full field issue, which is, oh, they're going to
- 3:35Speaker 2: drive illegally anyway, so let's just let them drive. And
- 3:40Speaker 2: the bottom line is a man who was not supposed
- 3:42Speaker 2: to be here had a Connecticut license when he killed
- 3:45Speaker 2: an Ohioan.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And Senator Marino was very angry. He wrote a letter.
- 3:50Speaker 1: He wrote a letter to Governor Ned Lamont. You can
- 3:52Speaker 1: see the letter on the Internet.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And he said that by his estimation, there were 61,000
- 4:01Speaker 2: people having these drive-only licenses.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Now, when we.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Actually started to look at the statistics as we went down,
- 4:10Speaker 2: it's closer to 90,000 people.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Now, think about that.
- 4:13Speaker 2: There's 90,000 people who have drive-only licenses. And the whole
- 4:18Speaker 2: processes of are these people registered to vote, do they
- 4:22Speaker 2: check a box, do they not check a box, it
- 4:24Speaker 2: seems like you can't get a straight answer from anybody.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But the most galling thing to me is our current.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Governor, hopefully not future governor, Ned Lamont, known affectionately on
- 4:40Speaker 2: this show, at least through me and all the people
- 4:42Speaker 2: on 30 with Tony and Mother Mary and all the
- 4:44Speaker 2: ships at sea, is King Governor Ned Lamont, the unaccountable.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Says, well, trust us.
- 4:48Speaker 2: That field, if you will, that motor voter, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: do you want to register to vote, does not come
- 4:54Speaker 2: up on a drive-only license.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Well, show us the field. Show us, oh, no, trust us.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Trust us. We're supposed to trust government that this thing
- 5:04Speaker 1: is working. But think about it, guys.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You got 91,000 people who have had this process. Now,
- 5:13Speaker 2: how does this happen? How does this thing get moving? Well,
- 5:18Speaker 2: there are a number of nonprofits. Most of them are,
- 5:22Speaker 2: you know, they say are privately supported. When you actually
- 5:27Speaker 2: look at the private support, the private support comes from
- 5:31Speaker 2: other nonprofits that NGOs, if you will, who effectively.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Are, shall we say, public support.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And you're thinking, gee, that sounds like money laundering. Yeah,
- 5:41Speaker 2: you know, I watched a lot of gangster movies, too, myself.
- 5:44Speaker 2: But so they're getting this funding. They're getting people to
- 5:49Speaker 2: apply for drive only licenses. And the other thing is that, well,
- 5:55Speaker 2: think of the money tree here. If you are in
- 5:59Speaker 2: a business that can profit by these people getting drive-only licenses, well, honestly, truthfully,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I mean, I think if you're in the driving school business,
- 6:09Speaker 2: you're shooting a fish in a barrel for crying out loud.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You've got 91,000 new customers. Now, it's a lot more
- 6:15Speaker 2: serious than that, okay? It's a lot more serious because
- 6:18Speaker 2: can they read English? Do they understand, like I came
- 6:23Speaker 2: here this morning in the dark and the gloom from Pomfort, Connecticut,
- 6:27Speaker 2: we're firmly convinced in Pomfret, Connecticut, that the world does
- 6:30Speaker 2: not exist before 5 a.m. But when you're driving along
- 6:34Speaker 2: the road, you see these symbol signs. Well, what's that mean?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 6:37Speaker 2: It's like, does that person who just got the drive-only license? No,
- 6:42Speaker 2: it is a complete, you know, well, it's trust the system.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we got the vote right.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Yeah, if you have absolutely nothing to do or even
- 6:51Speaker 2: if you don't have anything to do, Watch the Secretary
- 6:58Speaker 2: of the State of Connecticut, Stephanie Thomas' press conference about
- 7:03Speaker 2: her reaction to the homeland security surge against illegal voting.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And it has you— it' s probably one of the most vapid
- 7:14Speaker 2: things I've ever seen. I mean, I've seen some, shall
- 7:16Speaker 2: I say, empty-headed explanations. This has got to be in
- 7:19Speaker 2: the top five. But anyway, that's sort of an aside.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But— Senator Marino asked four questions. Fundamentally, questions that we
- 7:28Speaker 2: have all been asking since the beginning of time or
- 7:31Speaker 2: certainly since 2020. And simple logic-based questions, which we never
- 7:37Speaker 2: seem to get answers from in anything resembling Connecticut governments.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Number one, how many of these licenses exist clearly? You know,
- 7:45Speaker 2: we should know that.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Number two.
- 7:47Speaker 2: How many of the— think of Kamala Harris, the Venn diagrams. Okay,
- 7:52Speaker 2: you've got a big Venn diagram, people that got licenses.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Next up, how many holders have, in that universe, have
- 8:00Speaker 2: committed crimes?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Okay, easy enough. How many signed up to vote? That
- 8:05Speaker 1: should not be hard.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I mean, it's—you know, we used to run these things
- 8:08Speaker 2: in the bank all the time.
- 8:09Speaker 1: They're called merge operations.
- 8:11Speaker 2: You know, you run two spreadsheets, and you see where
- 8:13Speaker 2: I do them to this day and how much was spent.
- 8:17Speaker 2: What Senator Marino is driving at is how many people,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and this is actually in a lot of places, who
- 8:25Speaker 2: have these quote-unquote motor drive-only licenses that somehow turn into
- 8:32Speaker 2: motor voter, and there's no real forthright acknowledgment of the
- 8:36Speaker 2: fact that this exists. Now, two things trouble me here,
- 8:39Speaker 2: or maybe more than two things. If you're curious at
- 8:42Speaker 2: how this came about, This was all part of a
- 8:45Speaker 2: Department of Justice settlement in 2016. But if somebody comes in,
- 8:52Speaker 2: we know this much, and they say, I am a
- 8:54Speaker 2: citizen of the United States of America.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I swear to this.
- 8:58Speaker 2: This paperwork, if you will, goes to a registrar of
- 9:02Speaker 2: voters who is not really, I'm not calling the registrar
- 9:06Speaker 2: of voters stupid, but they don't have the machinery, if
- 9:11Speaker 2: you will, to say, well, Are these people on the level?
- 9:14Speaker 2: They're basically taking somebody at their word. Now, the thing is, OK,
- 9:18Speaker 2: they swore to one oath. Well, how many people swear
- 9:20Speaker 2: to one oath and don't mean it?
- 9:22Speaker 1: We don't know. And are we really paying attention? So
- 9:26Speaker 1: you have this thing going on. And here we are.
- 9:29Speaker 2: We have people running in elections, running their brains out
- 9:32Speaker 2: in good faith. I mean, do they got a shot?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Because think if I got an amoeba and it's 90
- 9:39Speaker 1: something thousand people and you can just do whatever you want.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I mean, that's a lot of slippage in a small market.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And one thing I can guarantee you is of those 90,000 people,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I don't think you're going to find a lot of
- 9:55Speaker 1: Trump voters in there.
- 9:56Speaker 2: OK, and I don't think you're going to see that amoeba.
- 10:00Speaker 2: if you will, going to places where it's unintended. I
- 10:05Speaker 2: picture the shadowy netherworld of through the nonprofits, through the
- 10:10Speaker 2: driving schools. through the wherever, and we can't get a
- 10:13Speaker 2: simple answer as to if that drive-only license says you
- 10:17Speaker 2: can drive only, well, show us the feel. Well, I'm
- 10:20Speaker 2: going to be showing you a lot today, this morning.
- 10:22Speaker 2: It's Tony D'Angelo, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk. We got
- 10:27Speaker 2: a great show coming up. My favorite part of the
- 10:29Speaker 2: whole show is coming up next time. It's actually after 6.30.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's the nonprofit announcement, so... Don't miss it. Don't miss
- 10:37Speaker 2: a thing today. Actually, it's a great program. I'll tell
- 10:40Speaker 2: you about that on the way out. Back after this.

- 25:32Speaker 2: one word. Anyway, I've been taking particular interest in this
- 25:38Speaker 2: one event, which is going to take place on Friday.
- 25:42Speaker 2: The march against Mayor Mondami in New York. We have
- 25:46Speaker 2: listeners all over the world, and we have a lot down.
- 25:49Speaker 1: In that vicinity.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Pastor James David Manning announced plans for a march on
- 25:56Speaker 2: September 11th. It is going to start at City Hall,
- 26:00Speaker 2: and it's going to go to Ground Zero. And it
- 26:04Speaker 2: is a peaceful march. People will walk arms and walk
- 26:07Speaker 2: all the way down to Ground Zero, and they will
- 26:11Speaker 2: protest Mayor Zoran Mondami. If you haven't seen Pastor Manning,
- 26:20Speaker 2: I think you should. You may not like his particular
- 26:23Speaker 2: style of ministry, but the man is telling it exactly
- 26:28Speaker 2: like it is. And all being well and equal, we
- 26:32Speaker 2: will have Pastor Manning on as a guest on this show.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Next Tuesday, I was speaking with his lovely wife, Elizabeth Sarah, yesterday,
- 26:42Speaker 2: and I've been listening to him more and more, and
- 26:47Speaker 2: believe me, if he actually takes things back to where
- 26:51Speaker 2: did the train jump off the track, and you go
- 26:57Speaker 2: back to the Great Society when you started handing out
- 27:00Speaker 2: money and making it to where the thought which has
- 27:03Speaker 2: permeated a lot of our consciousness, which is the government
- 27:07Speaker 2: owes you, the government owes you.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Like, whatever happened to going out and getting it for yourself?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Well, no, the government should do that for you, and
- 27:14Speaker 2: this is really, we have this societal crisis in our
- 27:19Speaker 2: country because people don't know how to do anymore. I
- 27:22Speaker 2: can remember, this is going back, I think, in my
- 27:26Speaker 2: early days of working with the food bank, My then
- 27:33Speaker 2: friend who actually she stole my friend. I haven't seen
- 27:36Speaker 2: her in a while who was running what was then
- 27:37Speaker 2: the Connecticut Food Bank had a great idea. And she said,
- 27:41Speaker 2: you know, if we could teach people how to cook,
- 27:44Speaker 2: if we can actually teach him, no, this is a pot.
- 27:46Speaker 1: This is a pan. This is a spoon.
- 27:49Speaker 2: This is whatever your stuff you put on the pan.
- 27:51Speaker 2: You like olive oil. You like, you know, spray, whatever.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And you can actually learn to cook for yourself. And
- 27:57Speaker 2: you could save yourself a ton of money and spent
- 28:02Speaker 2: a lot of time and a lot of effort in
- 28:05Speaker 2: the hope of getting people to learn to cook.
- 28:09Speaker 1: And it was an.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Incredible, colossal failure because. People were so conditioned to, you know,
- 28:17Speaker 2: eating out of a bag or eating out of a
- 28:19Speaker 2: box and completely, completely, completely could not, you know, it's, well,
- 28:24Speaker 2: where does food come from?
- 28:25Speaker 1: It comes from a box.
- 28:26Speaker 2: It doesn't even come from a plate for, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 2: it's like, where does milk come from? You know, milk
- 28:31Speaker 2: comes from bottles or cans or, you know, actually this
- 28:34Speaker 2: is coming in cans.
- 28:35Speaker 1: What's this evaporated milk?
- 28:36Speaker 2: But this is really, I think, where we've gone. I
- 28:39Speaker 2: can remember as a kid, this is actually, and you
- 28:42Speaker 2: think how, We thought this was ridiculous, but when fast
- 28:45Speaker 2: food started getting really big around the late 1960s and
- 28:50Speaker 2: things like that, around that time frame, I could remember
- 28:55Speaker 2: the Catholic priest coming out and saying, you know, it's
- 28:57Speaker 2: fun to go once in a while, but don't ever, ever,
- 29:00Speaker 2: ever give up the family mealtime where people would actually
- 29:03Speaker 2: sit and talk and make food and get– You know,
- 29:09Speaker 2: get around a common thing where it's just like, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 2: we've become such an eat and run society that, you know,
- 29:16Speaker 2: we've completely messed that up.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And it's like, well, we will go.
- 29:19Speaker 2: To a restaurant and believe me, go to the restaurants
- 29:22Speaker 2: because number one. So many of them are good, and
- 29:25Speaker 2: number two, they do appreciate your coming, but it's like
- 29:27Speaker 2: the only time we actually sit and talk to people
- 29:30Speaker 2: is in a restaurant.
- 29:30Speaker 1: No, you can actually do it at home. I can
- 29:32Speaker 1: tell you. You can actually cook.
- 29:34Speaker 2: You can actually sit there and look at your spouse
- 29:36Speaker 2: or look at your kids and say, wow, how did
- 29:38Speaker 2: all this come about?
- 29:39Speaker 1: But that.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Is really something I think that we've missed in our culture.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And when we're running from place to place, we just
- 29:47Speaker 2: don't necessarily get any of that. Well, we're coming back
- 29:51Speaker 2: in a little bit from what I understand. My engineer
- 29:54Speaker 2: tells me Bob Lazzeri. The world of sports. And, oh, man,
- 29:59Speaker 2: this is going to be a whole lot of fun.

- 34:41Speaker 1: Well, it's always a fun time when we discuss sports.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Sports has probably alienated me for the past five or
- 34:50Speaker 1: six years, but thank God I can still talk to
- 34:53Speaker 1: Bob and, you know, learn something about it. This is
- 34:55Speaker 1: Bob Lazeri. And, Bob, first of all, good morning. How
- 35:00Speaker 1: are you?
- 35:00Speaker 33: I'm doing good, Tony.
- 35:01Speaker 34: Thanks, man.
- 35:03Speaker 1: And you want to start with the birthdays and the events?
- 35:06Speaker 35: Yeah, let's do something.
- 35:07Speaker 36: First of all, I have a stat of the day, Tony.
- 35:09Speaker 36: I was doing a little research this past weekend, and
- 35:12Speaker 36: did you know, Tony, that Ted Kluszewski, right, 1954 for
- 35:17Speaker 36: the Cincinnati Reds, he hit 49 home runs and struck
- 35:22Speaker 36: out 35 times.
- 35:24Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 35:26Speaker 36: Now, in a four-year stretch, Tony, from 53 to 56–
- 35:31Speaker 36: all four years he hit more home runs than strikeouts.
- 35:34Speaker 36: For example, 1956, 35 home runs, 31 strikeouts. You know,
- 35:40Speaker 36: he was an amazing player, Tony. People don't realize how
- 35:43Speaker 36: good he was, not just for that four-year stretch, but
- 35:45Speaker 36: the sad thing is he had a back problem like
- 35:49Speaker 36: at the age of 31. He hurt himself in the
- 35:52Speaker 36: field and never was the same player after the age
- 35:56Speaker 36: of 31. But the numbers he put up to that point,
- 35:59Speaker 36: I mean, he could have been an all-time great, Tony.
- 36:01Speaker 36: You've got to look at his stats when you get
- 36:02Speaker 36: a chance.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It's, I mean, I would hear the old-timers, at least
- 36:07Speaker 2: to me, the old-timers talk about Klazuski, and the, well,
- 36:12Speaker 2: remember during the 60s and 70s that vest uniform was
- 36:16Speaker 2: very popular, you know, and it, maybe today you see
- 36:22Speaker 2: it now and then, but He would go out, and
- 36:24Speaker 2: he had these stovepipe arms, and he wouldn't wear an undershirt.
- 36:30Speaker 33: Yeah, there's pictures.
- 36:32Speaker 36: All over the Internet. You've got to see him, and
- 36:34Speaker 36: he's the reason why the Cincinnati Reds changed to that
- 36:37Speaker 36: style uniform. It's pretty wild, Tony. As far as on
- 36:41Speaker 36: this day, Tony, back in 1939, Tony, Bob Feller, at
- 36:46Speaker 36: the age of 20, became the youngest pitcher to ever
- 36:49Speaker 36: win 20 games. He was 24-9 at the age of 20.
- 36:52Speaker 5: Dear, dear, dear.
- 36:53Speaker 36: You know who actually broke his record, Tony, by a
- 36:56Speaker 36: couple months? It was Dwight Gooden in 85 when he
- 37:00Speaker 36: was 20 years old. But that happened this day in 1939. 1963,
- 37:04Speaker 36: on this day, Tony, Warren Spahn, 13th 20-win seasons. Now
- 37:12Speaker 36: think about that. What would this guy be worth today,
- 37:15Speaker 36: all right? 20-win seasons. He tied Christy Mathewson with 13
- 37:20Speaker 36: of them. I think Cy Young had 15, Tony, but
- 37:23Speaker 36: that happened in 1963 on this day. As far as
- 37:27Speaker 36: some birthdays, Tony, let's go to the NBA first because
- 37:31Speaker 36: you remember a couple of these guys. Remember Maurice Cheeks, Tony,
- 37:34Speaker 36: for the 76ers?
- 37:35Speaker 1: I sure do.
- 37:37Speaker 36: You remember our buddy, the PA announcer, saying Mo Cheeks, right?
- 37:44Speaker 33: Mo Cheeks.
- 37:46Speaker 36: That was– so he actually– believe it or not, he's
- 37:50Speaker 36: 70 years old today, Tony. Clarence Weatherspoon, who also played
- 37:54Speaker 36: for the 76ers, celebrates today. And Latrell Sprewell, Tony, the
- 38:00Speaker 36: much-aligned Latrell Sprewell, who had a bunch of problems off
- 38:04Speaker 36: the court. You know, this is the guy that choked
- 38:07Speaker 36: his coach, P.J. Carlissimo, and actually had a fight with
- 38:10Speaker 36: a couple of other players during his career. And you
- 38:14Speaker 36: remember when he said– Later in his career, when somebody
- 38:17Speaker 36: offered him a three-year, $ 21 million contract, Tony, $ 7 million
- 38:21Speaker 36: a year, he said, I can't do this. I've got
- 38:23Speaker 36: to feed my family.
- 38:24Speaker 1: He's got to feed his family.
- 38:26Speaker 33: That was his claim to fame.
- 38:28Speaker 36: As far as football birthdays, Tony, I've got one big
- 38:31Speaker 36: one for you. A guy, a good friend of ours,
- 38:34Speaker 36: Lem Barney, Tony.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Ah, a lovely man.
- 38:37Speaker 36: 81 years old today. You remember we talked to him. Man,
- 38:40Speaker 36: it had to be more than 10 years ago. And, Tony,
- 38:43Speaker 36: one of the nicest guys. You would never think he's
- 38:45Speaker 36: in the Hall of Fame when you talk to this guy. And,
- 38:48Speaker 36: you know, the more I look at his stats, I mean,
- 38:50Speaker 36: obviously a Hall of Famer, had over 50 interceptions. I
- 38:53Speaker 36: think there was things we talked to him about, but
- 38:56Speaker 36: we didn't get to talk to him about. I didn't know, Tony,
- 38:58Speaker 36: that he actually did some punting. Never mind punt returning
- 39:02Speaker 36: and interceptions. He did some punting in two of those
- 39:06Speaker 36: years with the Lions. But do you remember how good
- 39:08Speaker 36: of a guy he was, Tony?
- 39:10Speaker 1: Such a gentleman. And the thing is.
- 39:12Speaker 2: I think only trivia that only you and I would know,
- 39:15Speaker 2: he was actually, he and Mel Farr, another Lions player,
- 39:20Speaker 2: another great Lions player, were Marvin Gaye's backup singers on,
- 39:23Speaker 2: I think, that whole, What's Going On? And when you
- 39:27Speaker 2: hear that chatter in the in the beginning of the
- 39:31Speaker 2: guys that are like, hey, man, what's happening, whatever. And
- 39:34Speaker 2: you clearly pick up Lem Barney's voice. And I remember
- 39:38Speaker 2: we were doing the show and I said. I recognize
- 39:41Speaker 2: your voice. He said, yeah, that was me.
- 39:45Speaker 33: That was great.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Melfar.
- 39:46Speaker 36: Melfar, didn't he own a bunch of car dealerships?
- 39:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he had a number of commercials in Detroit. I
- 39:52Speaker 2: remember when I was out there as a much younger man.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And he would do these commercials where he would be
- 39:58Speaker 2: Superstar Mel Farr and he'd have a Superman cape.
- 40:03Speaker 33: Those were the days.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Really, really something.
- 40:05Speaker 36: As far as some more birthdays, Tony, well, born on
- 40:08Speaker 36: this day back in 1916, Jim Bagby. Jim Bagby is
- 40:12Speaker 36: known for the pitcher who stopped Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, Tony,
- 40:18Speaker 36: in 1941. Bagby, this was Jim Bagby Jr. His father
- 40:22Speaker 36: was a very accomplished pitcher. for the same Cleveland Indian
- 40:26Speaker 36: team years before, but Jim Bagby, who went on to
- 40:29Speaker 36: become a professional golfer, I believe. He was born on
- 40:33Speaker 36: this day in 1916. As far as other birthdays, Tony,
- 40:36Speaker 36: you remember the Force brothers, Tony?
- 40:38Speaker 3: Oh, very well, yeah.
- 40:40Speaker 1: From the Valley in California, yeah.
- 40:42Speaker 36: Yeah, Ken Force, 80 years old today. Sadly, Bob, he
- 40:46Speaker 36: passed away, I think, very young age. I think on
- 40:49Speaker 36: the age of 60. But Ken... was the older brother.
- 40:53Speaker 36: He celebrates his 80th birthday today. Don Asse, who used
- 40:59Speaker 36: to pitch, came up for the Red Sox, Tony, then
- 41:01Speaker 36: went to California.
- 41:02Speaker 5: I remember.
- 41:02Speaker 36: Probably known best for being traded for Jerry Remy in 1977. So,
- 41:10Speaker 36: I mean, probably the Red Sox probably had the best
- 41:12Speaker 36: of that trade. But Asse had a pretty good career
- 41:16Speaker 36: as it went on.
- 41:18Speaker 33: Gil Mesh.
- 41:19Speaker 36: Who was a pitcher, an all-star pitcher, Tony. I think
- 41:21Speaker 36: he made the all-star team with Kansas City one year.
- 41:24Speaker 36: Also pitched with the Mariners. He celebrates the birthday. And
- 41:28Speaker 36: current Yankee pitcher, Tony Garrett Cole, 36 years old today.
- 41:33Speaker 36: You can't believe how these guys age so quickly. You know,
- 41:37Speaker 36: I mean, he's a great pitcher, Tony, when he's healthy.
- 41:40Speaker 36: I mean, over his career in New York, he's had
- 41:43Speaker 36: his ups and downs as far as health-wise. But when
- 41:45Speaker 36: he's on, he's a great pitcher. I'm just wondering... With
- 41:49Speaker 36: a power pitcher like that, how many more years he
- 41:51Speaker 36: has left with the Yankees?
- 41:53Speaker 1: It usually goes quickly.
- 41:55Speaker 2: It's like I remember Don Drysdale had that incredible year.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I think it was 1968. And then, like, 1969, he's
- 42:03Speaker 2: going along, and all of a sudden it's like boom, snap,
- 42:06Speaker 2: rotator cuff.
- 42:07Speaker 1: And this, of course, was before.
- 42:10Speaker 2: The sophisticated surgery and the Tommy John surgery. And, you know,
- 42:14Speaker 2: as a relatively young, young man, his, uh, his career
- 42:17Speaker 2: is over and that's, uh, you know, these days, uh,
- 42:20Speaker 2: I think you have more of a fighting chance, but that,
- 42:23Speaker 2: that's just the way it is.
- 42:24Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 42:25Speaker 36: Uh, we just, we'll see what happens as far as,
- 42:27Speaker 36: especially in the playoffs coming up.
- 42:29Speaker 1: And, uh, it's, uh, you know, it's funny.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Now you have me warming back into what I think
- 42:34Speaker 2: I was telling you. I was watching that 1960 Detroit lions, uh,
- 42:39Speaker 2: championship game against Cleveland. And, uh, it was, I was amazed, Bob,
- 42:44Speaker 2: and you don't.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Think of it.
- 42:45Speaker 2: He's almost lost to history. But Earl Morrill, what a
- 42:48Speaker 2: great quarterback he was. And the thing I like about him,
- 42:51Speaker 2: at least in his career, is wherever you put him
- 42:54Speaker 2: to play, you just put him in somewhere. It was
- 42:56Speaker 2: like the one year at Baltimore. Hey, Unitas is hurt.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Get in there and play. You know, when's the title?
- 43:02Speaker 2: Same thing with Miami, and his thing was, well, they
- 43:05Speaker 2: give you the opportunity, you take it, you do something
- 43:07Speaker 2: with it.
- 43:08Speaker 36: Yeah, Morrow was one of those guys, you think back,
- 43:11Speaker 36: and he had some big moments. If you look at
- 43:13Speaker 36: his career stats, maybe not, they don't jump out at you,
- 43:17Speaker 36: but Morrow, him and Unitas, Tony, with the crew cuts, right?
- 43:21Speaker 36: They look like brothers, but yeah, Earl Morrow, that was
- 43:24Speaker 36: a great name to remember.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Well, believe it or not, the last subject I wanted
- 43:28Speaker 2: to discuss with you was the Doug Eddings incident with
- 43:32Speaker 2: the hat, but I think we'll have to maybe hold
- 43:34Speaker 2: that out for next time we're actually running out of it.
- 43:36Speaker 2: It's Tony D'Angelo, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk. And, Bob,
- 43:42Speaker 2: where can our friends and fans reach you?
- 43:44Speaker 36: Tony, they can go up on X, check my name,
- 43:47Speaker 36: and you'll be able to see that Lem Barney interview
- 43:51Speaker 36: if they'd like to see that today. So it was
- 43:53Speaker 36: very interesting. I would hope people would watch that today.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I would, too. Thanks, Bob. Thanks for being here.
- 43:59Speaker 33: Have a good day.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Come back after 7 o'clock. D'Angelo, Swick, the Power Hour.
- 44:04Speaker 2: Don't miss it.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Back after this.
- 44:06Speaker 37: When I'm two kisses up your head And you're counted
- 44:11Speaker 37: in your false embrace Quicker than I could bear And
- 44:19Speaker 37: I seemed you were telling me goodbye.
- 44:26Speaker 38: Broadcasting live from the Bruce Delon Buick GMC Studios.

- 44:47Speaker 40: It's now about 90 miles due west of us here
- 44:50Speaker 40: on the.
- 44:51Speaker 20: Island of Kauai. We're in Kaloa.
- 44:53Speaker 40: Winds have gusted down nearby Luhui Airport to 84 miles

- 45:00Speaker 40: The Pacific Ocean, way out of its banks, coming across
- 45:03Speaker 40: the seawall, across the beach. The whole area here around
- 45:07Speaker 40: these hotels is underwater.
- 45:09Speaker 20: There's a lot of debris.
- 45:11Speaker 40: Power outages, 91% of the island.
- 45:14Speaker 20: Out without power.
- 45:15Speaker 39: And Hurricane Lowell's heavy rain stretches east even toward the
- 45:17Speaker 39: Big Island where flooding is a concern. Canada is fighting
- 45:20Speaker 39: back in a renewed trade war with the U.S.
- 45:22Speaker 9: New tariffs in effect today.
- 45:24Speaker 41: After renewed trade talks fell apart with Canada, the Trump
- 45:27Speaker 41: administration announced additional tariffs on more than $ 20 billion worth
- 45:30Speaker 41: of goods. Canadian officials then announced retaliatory tariffs ranging from
- 45:34Speaker 41: 15 to 50 percent on everything from dairy to furniture, aluminum, tools,
- 45:39Speaker 41: sewing equipment, makeup, stoves, radiators, prefabricated structures and more. Prime
- 45:45Speaker 41: Minister Mark Carney said last week when the Trump administration
- 45:47Speaker 41: stops throwing shade and doing memes, talks can resume.
- 45:51Speaker 39: That's Fox's Jessica Rosenthal. Oil prices up 2 to 3
- 45:54Speaker 39: percent as the Iran conflict spills again into Saudi Arabia,
- 45:58Speaker 39: where Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked facilities in several
- 46:01Speaker 39: Saudi cities. In addition to recent attacks on oil tankers
- 46:04Speaker 39: in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia vowing to retaliate. Russia
- 46:07Speaker 39: attacked Ukraine again overnight, killing at least two people after
- 46:10Speaker 39: another U.S.
- 46:11Speaker 20: Attempt to stop the war.
- 46:12Speaker 42: Fighting was paused over the weekend as U.S. envoys Jared
- 46:16Speaker 42: Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kiev for their first
- 46:19Speaker 42: official visit to Ukraine. this after visiting Moscow in a
- 46:22Speaker 42: renewed push to end the war. The main targets in
- 46:25Speaker 42: these overnight attacks were Kiev and the southern Odessa region.
- 46:28Speaker 39: That's Fox's Jonathan Savage, and it's primary day polls opening
- 46:32Speaker 39: in New Hampshire. America's listening to Fox News.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Two quick questions.
- 46:37Speaker 26: Would you describe your current wireless service as five-star? Are
- 46:42Speaker 26: you paying more than $ 34. 99 a month for unlimited data?
- 46:44Speaker 26: I only ask. because in a recent industry survey of 120,000
- 46:51Speaker 26: wireless customers, PureTalk was the only wireless company out there
- 46:55Speaker 26: to receive five stars in every category, coverage, support, value,
- 47:01Speaker 26: and data. And now, until the end of this week,
- 47:04Speaker 26: PureTalk is offering unlimited data for just $ 15 a month
- 47:07Speaker 26: for your first three months. After that, you'll get unlimited
- 47:10Speaker 26: data for as low as $ 34. 99 a month with no
- 47:13Speaker 26: contract and no commitment. Just dial pound.com. $ 2. 50, say micro,
- 47:18Speaker 26: and Pure Talk's five-star U.S. customer service team will switch
- 47:22Speaker 26: you in minutes. And it's just $ 15 a month for
- 47:25Speaker 26: your first three months. There really is no better time
- 47:27Speaker 26: to switch to Pure Talk than right now. Dial pound 250,
- 47:32Speaker 26: say micro, and switch to a five-star American watch.
- 47:38Speaker 16: Mostly sunny today with highs near 80.
- 47:40Speaker 8: Good morning.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I'm David Fish.
- 47:43Speaker 31: A Griswold man faces charges after allegedly recording a woman
- 47:46Speaker 31: inside of a Target dressing room in Lisbon. 30-year-old Brandon
- 47:50Speaker 31: Michael McMeachin was released on $ 5, 000 bond and is due
- 47:54Speaker 31: back in court on September 17th. A dirt bike rider
- 47:58Speaker 31: was found over a cliff Monday afternoon on Black Hill
- 48:01Speaker 31: Road in Plainfield. The rider was hospitalized with unknown injuries
- 48:05Speaker 31: and the incident remains under investigation. Rocky Neck State Park
- 48:09Speaker 31: was closed to all swimming on Monday after testing found
- 48:12Speaker 31: elevated bacteria levels in the water. The park and campground
- 48:16Speaker 31: remained open while the DEEP retests the water today. Norwich
- 48:20Speaker 31: police are investigating a targeted shooting Sunday afternoon in the

- 48:47Speaker 16: I'm David Fish. Have a great day today. And remember,
- 48:50Speaker 16: when news breaks, we break in.
- 48:52Speaker 42: 94.9 News and.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Stimulating Talk.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Tony D'Angelo in on this Tuesday the 8th for the
- 49:03Speaker 2: morning show.
- 49:03Speaker 1: So happy to have you with us.
- 49:06Speaker 2: And I have an announcement which I will read if
- 49:10Speaker 2: you go to the front page of the New London Daily.
- 49:14Speaker 2: You will see that the Marks-Elsey equal time talks have stalled.
- 49:19Speaker 2: You can follow up. with the article, and it is
- 49:23Speaker 2: pretty much self-explanatory. But we're having a show regardless. And
- 49:28Speaker 2: I have my friend, my colleague, a man I'd like
- 49:32Speaker 2: to call the godfather, someone who has actually tipped me.
- 49:37Speaker 2: me to the uh the budgetary situation and the abuses
- 49:41Speaker 2: of uh connecticut you know probably over 20 years ago
- 49:45Speaker 2: and this has been a segment really it's been i
- 49:49Speaker 2: i'm getting so many questions and compliments and talk about
- 49:54Speaker 2: this talk about that and we've got a whole lot
- 49:56Speaker 2: to talk about so So happy to have Professor Bob
- 50:00Speaker 2: Swick here with us this morning for the full hour.
- 50:03Speaker 2: We'll take calls in the 730 hour if something piques
- 50:06Speaker 2: your interest.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Bob, how are you, pal?
- 50:09Speaker 33: I'm great, Tony. Thanks for having me on this morning.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Of course.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Where do you want to go first?
- 50:14Speaker 33: I don't know where to start, but I want to
- 50:15Speaker 33: do one comparison right now to get people excited about
- 50:20Speaker 33: voting in November in Connecticut.
- 50:22Speaker 43: Okay.
- 50:23Speaker 33: When Dan Malloy decided not to run because he was
- 50:27Speaker 33: cutting his deal for his cush job in Maine as
- 50:31Speaker 33: educational chancellor or whatever his position is there.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yeah, non-job.
- 50:35Speaker 33: Okay. State of Connecticut was spending roughly $ 21 billion a year.
- 50:42Speaker 33: This is going back to basically 2017, 2018 budgets. Connecticut
- 50:48Speaker 33: right now is spending close to $ 28 billion a year,
- 50:51Speaker 33: not counting everything that's off budget. Connecticut's business tax climate
- 50:57Speaker 33: when Malloy was leaving office was ranked 44th in the country.
- 51:01Speaker 33: Right now it is at 47 and probably will be
- 51:04Speaker 33: going down to 48 when the new Survey Bay Tax
- 51:09Speaker 33: Foundation comes out. Connecticut has stagnant population growth. Connecticut has
- 51:17Speaker 33: one of the highest personal property taxes in the country,
- 51:21Speaker 33: has one of the highest tax structures in the country,
- 51:24Speaker 33: not just for business, but for, you know, everything else
- 51:27Speaker 33: we look at. Connecticut still has $ 100 to $ 150 billion
- 51:31Speaker 33: worth of short and long-term debt, along with unfunded liabilities,
- 51:35Speaker 33: contrary to what everyone else, but not what the Democratic
- 51:39Speaker 33: Party is trying to say, that things are being paid off,
- 51:41Speaker 33: so on and so forth. Voters really need to say
- 51:45Speaker 33: to themselves coming up in this election, am I better
- 51:48Speaker 33: off than I was eight years ago? It certainly doesn't
- 51:50Speaker 33: sound it if the state is spending a billion dollars
- 51:54Speaker 33: more a year and we still have the same problems
- 51:57Speaker 33: that we had eight years ago or the same problems
- 51:59Speaker 33: we had 35 years ago. And paralleling that, there was
- 52:02Speaker 33: a report that came out with regards to the state
- 52:09Speaker 33: comptroller's office couldn't figure out and find out where $ 35.
- 52:14Speaker 44: Million worth of health care payments went when they audited.
- 52:20Speaker 33: The accounts of the health care providers in the state
- 52:25Speaker 33: by the payments that the state connected made to them.
- 52:28Speaker 33: So you look at this kind of stuff and you wonder, Tony,
- 52:32Speaker 33: what is going on? Is there anyone in Hartford that
- 52:36Speaker 33: knows what's going on, number one? And number two, at
- 52:39Speaker 33: some point, does anyone think the money will run out?
- 52:45Speaker 1: Ostensibly not.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I mean, we were talking this morning about the ostensible
- 52:51Speaker 2: motor voter situation, and we're going to talk about our
- 52:55Speaker 2: should-be-abolished Department of Economic and Community Development. But, Bob, you
- 52:59Speaker 2: see this time and time and time and time again.
- 53:04Speaker 2: And you never see, at least in my time on
- 53:10Speaker 2: this earth, I've never seen that governor come in, and say, look,
- 53:16Speaker 2: this is a mess, and I'm going to fix it.
- 53:18Speaker 2: I'm going to get commissioners that actually know how to commission,
- 53:23Speaker 2: not stooges, not boobs, not hacks, not people I owe
- 53:27Speaker 2: favors to, but people who are experts in the field.
- 53:31Speaker 2: And the first thing is, which you've told me for years,
- 53:33Speaker 2: and I wholeheartedly agree with, you accept that commissionership, if
- 53:37Speaker 2: that's a word, 15% pay cut. 15% of what you
- 53:39Speaker 2: would ordinarily get you are in service to the state,
- 53:45Speaker 2: and then you're going to get your department to work
- 53:48Speaker 2: inside of four years. Bob, I have never seen this,
- 53:51Speaker 2: and yet it's this kind of thing that everybody just
- 53:54Speaker 2: kind of blows it off, or this is fine, or
- 53:57Speaker 2: this guy's good, or he smiles, or she's an attractive.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Lady, or she did something. And then the thing I
- 54:03Speaker 1: think that makes me very angry.
- 54:05Speaker 33: Is— Well, the problem is that I think people in
- 54:09Speaker 33: the state have become— death to what's going on especially
- 54:13Speaker 33: people who were the elected officials who are the commissioners
- 54:17Speaker 33: were the people that work in state government they just
- 54:19Speaker 33: seemed not to care and the connecticut taxpayer sadly who's
- 54:24Speaker 33: working very hard to pay this tax burden really doesn't
- 54:29Speaker 33: does not get any answers and and and and basically
- 54:32Speaker 33: comes down to where and when will accountability come forward
- 54:37Speaker 33: again in in state government And I think there's a
- 54:41Speaker 33: golden opportunity in November to say, hey, things are not working.
- 54:45Speaker 33: We really need a change. And I would like to
- 54:47Speaker 33: see if a new governor is elected that he decides
- 54:55Speaker 33: to have a full audit of state government. Let's go
- 54:57Speaker 33: top to bottom. Let's go each department. Let's figure out
- 55:01Speaker 33: what's going on here. And is there any possible way
- 55:04Speaker 33: we could cut some of that $ 28 billion we're spending
- 55:08Speaker 33: into Two in turn, which leads me to the second
- 55:11Speaker 33: thing I want to touch base on, is why we
- 55:15Speaker 33: offer so many tax breaks to businesses trying to expand
- 55:21Speaker 33: or come into the state, when at the same time
- 55:23Speaker 33: the last budget basically increased and or created new business
- 55:28Speaker 33: taxes of over $ 500 million. Is there some irony I'm
- 55:34Speaker 33: missing in this whole process economically? that we have to
- 55:39Speaker 33: offer all these tax breaks, but yet at the same time, hey,
- 55:43Speaker 33: we're not taxing businesses enough. Let's increase it by half
- 55:46Speaker 33: a billion dollars this coming budget.
- 55:51Speaker 2: I think it's just a disconnect, or that person who
- 55:56Speaker 2: was being, I'll use the term, bribed, to come in,
- 55:59Speaker 2: and it's like, well, those taxes won't apply to you
- 56:03Speaker 2: your first three years, five years, whatever the case may be,
- 56:05Speaker 2: and And, Bob, I can remember going all the way back,
- 56:09Speaker 2: I think where I began to get interested in this
- 56:11Speaker 2: way back when, was remember there used to be a
- 56:14Speaker 2: Macy's store in New Haven, a real nice Macy's store.
- 56:18Speaker 2: It was a great place to go, and if you
- 56:19Speaker 2: wanted to buy something for your mom or your girlfriend
- 56:22Speaker 2: or your wife, you can get it done in 15 minutes,
- 56:25Speaker 2: and you can go back to where you were working.
- 56:28Speaker 2: It was high-quality New York-type merchandise. And then when New
- 56:33Speaker 2: Haven started going south, I don't know if it was
- 56:37Speaker 2: the present incarnation of our should-be-abolished Department of Economic and
- 56:42Speaker 2: Community Development, but some incarnation. They threw, I forget how
- 56:46Speaker 2: many millions of dollars. You would remember this at Macy's.
- 56:49Speaker 2: You know, you've got to stay here. Oh, great, Macy's
- 56:51Speaker 2: is going to stay. And, like, within eight months, Macy's
- 56:54Speaker 2: was gone. And I asked the question, well, do they
- 56:57Speaker 2: have to pay back the $ 2 million or whatever that
- 57:00Speaker 2: basically they took under false.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's... And.
- 57:06Speaker 33: How many businesses like that took the money and ran?
- 57:09Speaker 1: Exactly, exactly.
- 57:11Speaker 33: There's no functional auditing, and with all the research I
- 57:15Speaker 33: do trying to find information, you can't find anything, especially
- 57:20Speaker 33: from the DECD, with what they give out, so on
- 57:23Speaker 33: and so forth. And then they get very defensive when
- 57:25Speaker 33: you question them on anything. You know, that's not your business. Well, okay,
- 57:29Speaker 33: if you and I or anyone who's listening is a
- 57:33Speaker 33: taxpayer in the state of Connecticut, Don't you have a
- 57:35Speaker 33: right to know where your tax money is being spent?
- 57:38Speaker 33: Or we have a totally non-transparent government where, you know,
- 57:44Speaker 33: you work for government and that's it, and you just
- 57:46Speaker 33: accept what your government officials do for you. That's wrong.
- 57:50Speaker 33: But getting back to the business function, if Connecticut is
- 57:53Speaker 33: going to survive in the future, it has to maintain
- 57:57Speaker 33: a job space. The only way you're going to maintain
- 57:59Speaker 33: a job space is having businesses create jobs, contrary to
- 58:02Speaker 33: what everyone says. Every elected official seems not to believe
- 58:07Speaker 33: in or not believe that. So unless you have the stores,
- 58:10Speaker 33: unless you have the data centers, unless you have, you know,
- 58:15Speaker 33: different types of businesses that can create jobs for people
- 58:19Speaker 33: who have different levels of skills and education, your quagmire
- 58:25Speaker 33: economy is going to last forever. You're going to be
- 58:28Speaker 33: 50 out of 50 states, and congratulations because You brought
- 58:32Speaker 33: it on yourself. No one else did.
- 58:36Speaker 2: It boggles my mind, which obviously is not an expansive
- 58:41Speaker 2: one as to if you've got, you know, if you're
- 58:45Speaker 2: consuming at a certain level or if money is just
- 58:48Speaker 2: going out at a certain level, and to your point,
- 58:50Speaker 2: the budget keeps increasing and increasing, and you've got a
- 58:53Speaker 2: diminishing number of taxpayers, and not only that, but Who
- 58:58Speaker 2: are the taxpayers that you lose? You lose the couple
- 59:02Speaker 2: that's maybe in their 50s, and between them they've got $ 250, 000
- 59:06Speaker 2: a year adjusted.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Gross income. Not wealthy, but have some money. And they're
- 59:17Speaker 1: being replaced by, you know, whatever you want to call it,
- 59:20Speaker 1: a job in Lowe's or a job in the Target
- 59:24Speaker 1: or something like that. And then in the minds of government,
- 59:28Speaker 1: it's like, well, Look at all these people we've employed,
- 59:31Speaker 1: but they never look at, quote-unquote, the income loss of things.
- 59:35Speaker 1: And the fact that if.
- 59:37Speaker 2: You have more income, you will be able to buy
- 59:41Speaker 2: more things, and that will radiate... You never, ever, ever
- 59:45Speaker 2: see that.
- 59:46Speaker 1: And it's like, I think... And the other thing, Bob,
- 59:49Speaker 1: they don't get is... And I say this, I will.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Again, I'm Warren Stangelo's youngest favorite broken record son.
- 59:56Speaker 36: The.
- 59:59Speaker 2: The risk factor we talked about this morning, presumably somewhere
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: between 60-something and 90,000 people have drive-only licenses, and they
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: are not, shall we say, noncitizens or presumed to be noncitizens.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: what kind of a risk does that cause to the public?
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: In other words, if they're driving and they can't read
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: English signs and they don't know what the symbols mean
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: and they're going around the car and the car is
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: uninsured and all that, it's like, hey, wow, gee, great.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: You know, net little money.
- 1:00:37Speaker 33: Well, the risk you're creating is that you're creating excessively
- 1:00:42Speaker 33: high insurance costs for those people who legally drive. You're
- 1:00:46Speaker 33: creating high costs of repair, replacement, so on and so forth.
- 1:00:51Speaker 33: Because your car gets damaged by someone who has a
- 1:00:54Speaker 33: drive-only license. They have no insurance. Your insurance has to
- 1:00:57Speaker 33: pick it up. And it just continues to roll on
- 1:01:01Speaker 33: and on and on. And what fascinates me is the
- 1:01:04Speaker 33: amount of time the Democratic Party spends defending these people
- 1:01:10Speaker 33: when they have an economy in collapse. I mean, where
- 1:01:14Speaker 33: are your priorities? What are your priorities? Do you have
- 1:01:17Speaker 33: any priorities? It doesn't even make sense to me. You
- 1:01:20Speaker 33: need jobs. You need to create and get Connecticut moving again.
- 1:01:24Speaker 33: You need to pay down debt, so on and so forth.
- 1:01:27Speaker 33: What is the plan? No, the plan is your junior U.S.
- 1:01:31Speaker 33: senator walks around Connecticut in a staged event talking about
- 1:01:35Speaker 33: how bad President Trump is. You have the defense of
- 1:01:40Speaker 33: all these people with the drive-only license. You have the
- 1:01:44Speaker 33: defense of, oh, I can't count votes on time, so
- 1:01:48Speaker 33: on and so forth.
- 1:01:48Speaker 45: It's ridiculous.
- 1:01:50Speaker 33: You know, people have to realize this is costing you
- 1:01:54Speaker 33: a lot of money in a lot of different ways,
- 1:01:56Speaker 33: not only in taxes, your high insurance rate, your high
- 1:01:59Speaker 33: property insurance rate, so on and so forth.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: It is, and they don't– how can I put it?
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: When will– because I'll tell you something. Okay, I'm going
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: to be Mike Wallace here, warts and all. Bob, I'm
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: not seeing any campaign. I'm not seeing any person proposing
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: to run for office today. that has yet, double underscore,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: bold letters, articulated an economic plan for Connecticut? What gets
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: us out of the mud? Or is your perception that, hey,
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: what we're doing is just fine and everything's going to
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: be good and we're going to have the pizza trail
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: and tourism in and of itself? Tourism is important, especially
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: in this part of the state.
- 1:02:42Speaker 33: Yeah, that's right. I haven't seen anything either. And I
- 1:02:45Speaker 33: continue to question it because, again, as I've said numerous times,
- 1:02:48Speaker 33: I look at things through economic terms. It is a
- 1:02:53Speaker 33: real simple fact in our society. You have to have
- 1:02:56Speaker 33: a job. You have to work. You have to earn money.
- 1:03:00Speaker 33: You have different skill levels of people so that all
- 1:03:03Speaker 33: people need to be employed, whether or not they have
- 1:03:06Speaker 33: a Ph.D. or they just have a high school education.
- 1:03:09Speaker 33: They only have an eighth grade education, so on and
- 1:03:11Speaker 33: so forth. jobs are essential for the economy to work.
- 1:03:15Speaker 33: The economy cannot function when the state takes over the
- 1:03:20Speaker 33: role of employer by social welfare benefit payments, so on
- 1:03:25Speaker 33: and so forth. It can't sustain it with, going back
- 1:03:29Speaker 33: to what you said, there are too many people in
- 1:03:32Speaker 33: that $ 200, 000 to $ 300, 000 yearly range of income who are
- 1:03:37Speaker 33: leaving the state Those jobs are being eliminated, so on
- 1:03:40Speaker 33: and so forth, and they're not going to maintain a
- 1:03:43Speaker 33: stimulating economy by paying an above-equilibrium minimum wage, which creates
- 1:03:50Speaker 33: less jobs rather than creating more jobs, contrary to what
- 1:03:53Speaker 33: they believe. So the retail sector, the few retail stores
- 1:03:57Speaker 33: that are opening, aren't creating high-level positions where they're going
- 1:04:01Speaker 33: to replace those other people who were making that kind
- 1:04:04Speaker 33: of money and paying that kind of taxes and spending
- 1:04:07Speaker 33: that kind of money which, believe it or not, stimulates
- 1:04:10Speaker 33: the economy because it creates a ripple effect in the economy.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Well, and listen, you know, again, I'm in this warts
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: and all mood today. It's the day after Labor Day.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: And as my high school teacher would tell me, D'Angelo,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: let's get real. The fact that we don't have a
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: competitive tax structure at all for any reason whatsoever. Even
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: whatever's proposed is not competitive whatsoever as proposed for whatever reason,
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: unless we get that, unless we get that elected official
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: or that person saying, this is going to be fair
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: and flat and diminishing and the costs are going to
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: go down and we're going to turn the corner. I mean, this,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: this thing continues on a train to nowhere. And, I'm
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: at the point now where I'm saying, when is a
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: little bit better bad somehow good?
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: It's not.
- 1:05:05Speaker 33: It's not.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: It just isn't.
- 1:05:06Speaker 33: And it never will be. And the problem with Connecticut also,
- 1:05:09Speaker 33: with its tax structure, there's so many different taxes on
- 1:05:14Speaker 33: so many different things that you really need, you know,
- 1:05:17Speaker 33: it's a full-time job just to study what kind of,
- 1:05:19Speaker 33: what is being taxed and why. And it seems that
- 1:05:23Speaker 33: all the money, for example, the... the meals tax that
- 1:05:27Speaker 33: was created, which is going to, or was supposed to
- 1:05:31Speaker 33: go to tourism. Apparently now that money's not going to tourism.
- 1:05:34Speaker 33: It's getting, you know, funneled into the general fund, as
- 1:05:37Speaker 33: do most taxes in the state of Connecticut. So what
- 1:05:40Speaker 33: was the point of that? Just more money that the
- 1:05:42Speaker 33: state can collect so they can spend more money. Again,
- 1:05:46Speaker 33: I go back to the point I made earlier. Why
- 1:05:50Speaker 33: has Connecticut's state budget increased by $ 1 billion per year
- 1:05:54Speaker 33: for the past eight years. Why? What are Connecticut taxpayers
- 1:05:58Speaker 33: getting differently or more of with that $ 1 billion? I
- 1:06:03Speaker 33: really can't see it, and a lot of people can't
- 1:06:06Speaker 33: see it either. So where's that money going? And again,
- 1:06:09Speaker 33: if you did a full audit of the budget, I
- 1:06:11Speaker 33: think a lot of people would be scared because they'll
- 1:06:14Speaker 33: realize the amount of waste that Connecticut has in its
- 1:06:18Speaker 33: state budget, simply put. And start with the DECD, which
- 1:06:23Speaker 33: to me is very, very non-effective. And, you know, I
- 1:06:26Speaker 33: don't have to tell you. You see it, you know, readily.
- 1:06:30Speaker 33: It's not doing what it's supposed to do. I don't
- 1:06:31Speaker 33: know what it is doing. It's picking and choosing winners
- 1:06:35Speaker 33: and losers and picking the Lamont winners. That's all they're
- 1:06:38Speaker 33: concerned with. And everybody else, you know, go pound sand.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: Well, and excuse me to introduce that into the discussion.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: There was a 128-page report. The firm doing it, it
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: was Clifton Allen Larson, I believe. Sometimes I get the
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Allen and the Larson confused. And it's fine work. And
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: it's not a quote-unquote on the first page.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: I was looking at it yesterday and just talk about
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: the smoke coming out of your ears. It's not an
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: audit in the audit sense for those people who are
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: out there familiar with the rules of public accounting, but
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: it's done to, they have to keep, this firm walks
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: a tightrope.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: They have to keep a high ethical standard. They can't
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: write works of fiction, even though their client, who is
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: the should-be-abolished Department of Economic and Community Development, would certainly
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: like to have, quote-unquote, a much more soft-soap approach. But
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: what What bothered me was that, and I've wrote some
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: of these things down. We can talk about them as
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: we head into the next half hour. But the news report,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: if you read the news report in the Connecticut Mirror
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: and other places and the Hartford Courant, everything is the
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Blue Hill Civic Association, Douglas McCrory, Sansare Cicero-Hamlin, and, and, and, and, and.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Bob, on that audit.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Report, which I will call it, There must be 100
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: nonprofit organizations where there is improper documentation, malfeasance.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: We don't know what happened. We really can't get our
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: hands on it. We asked. They didn't answer. And, and, and.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: And I'm just saying to myself, number one, there's no
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: mention of any of that in any sort of published
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: news report. Just look at the report. You can link
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: to the report. But it's like, how can you be
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: a public official? or an aspiring public official, look at
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: that and say, that's okay. No, that is not okay.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: That is taking taxpayer money in millions of dollars and
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: throwing it into the street. Not only that, but you
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: mean to tell me you cannot put a dashboard up
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: as to what these organizations are doing? Why is everything
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: cloak and dagger? It's like, oh, we'll do it. Oh,
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: the legislature will make a proposal.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: It doesn't work.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: It does not work because, Bob, if it were working.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: It would work.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: And it doesn't.
- 1:09:09Speaker 33: Exactly. And the problem with the political nepotism of that
- 1:09:13Speaker 33: commission and many commissions in the state of Connecticut is
- 1:09:16Speaker 33: They know they're covered. They know the Democratic Party can
- 1:09:19Speaker 33: cover them. They know this is a cush job. Just
- 1:09:21Speaker 33: give me a couple more years so I can get
- 1:09:23Speaker 33: my state pension. Blah, blah, blah. And it continues for
- 1:09:27Speaker 33: years now, for 35 years. It's the same song and
- 1:09:30Speaker 33: dance all the time. And the problem becomes, again, I reiterate,
- 1:09:36Speaker 33: when the state runs out of money once and for all,
- 1:09:39Speaker 33: when enough businesses have moved out of the state, enough
- 1:09:42Speaker 33: higher income businesses, individuals move out of the state and
- 1:09:45Speaker 33: stop paying taxes, you've got real serious problems. And then
- 1:09:49Speaker 33: the finger-pointing starts. So instead of getting a grasp on
- 1:09:53Speaker 33: it now, get an audit.
- 1:09:54Speaker 44: Report like that, and the commissioner and the governor and
- 1:10:00Speaker 44: all the elected officials that we have, all these high-paid
- 1:10:03Speaker 44: officials that we have, okay, there's a major problem here.
- 1:10:06Speaker 33: We need to address it now.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: And we're going to start another commission to And we're
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: going to start right there. We're coming up on a
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: hard break. Tony D'Angelo, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk. 80
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: degrees and rocking downtown Ledyard. Bob Swick just getting warmed
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: up the power hour. Back after this.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: No delays on I-395.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: I'm Eddie Schaefer, Time Saver Traffic.
- 1:11:16Speaker 7: Whaling city ford needs 50 pre-owned vehicles and yours could
- 1:11:19Speaker 7: be one of them right now we're actively buying cars

- 1:20:13Speaker 2: Professor Bob Swick in the Power Hour. Thank you for
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: being here this morning, and we have an honor group
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: of the day. If you are those people who have
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: labored on Labor Day, then you are on the honor
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: group of the day on 94.9 News Now. But back
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: to Professor Bob Swick. I think we left off with
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: the DECD, and you begin where you.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: Want to begin, pal.
- 1:20:39Speaker 12: Bob?
- 1:20:42Speaker 52: Getting it.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Yes, hold up, Bob. Bob, are you there?
- 1:20:49Speaker 33: Yeah.
- 1:20:50Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: You begin where you want to begin.
- 1:20:54Speaker 33: Getting back to what we were talking about, and again,
- 1:20:58Speaker 33: looking at the economic conditions in the state, I think
- 1:21:02Speaker 33: it's essential, really, for someone, anyone, to really... understand the
- 1:21:10Speaker 33: magnitude of the economic problems in the state with the
- 1:21:13Speaker 33: high taxes, with the issues of fraud going on, with
- 1:21:18Speaker 33: the issues of lackadaisical accounting procedures, so on and so forth.
- 1:21:24Speaker 33: It is a serious issue, and it needs to be addressed.
- 1:21:29Speaker 33: And honestly, if waste could be cut out of state government, conversely,
- 1:21:35Speaker 33: waste gets cut out of local governments, you would see
- 1:21:39Speaker 33: much more economic stimulation. And I don't understand why this
- 1:21:44Speaker 33: is such a difficult topic to try to communicate to
- 1:21:49Speaker 33: people who are in government on both sides of the aisle.
- 1:21:52Speaker 33: I just don't understand it.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: Me, myself, and I, I shudder to think about all
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: of the give the folks a little bit of background
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: that haven't been here. July 1st of this year was
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: the declaration date for Opportunity Zones in the United States
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: of America. Opportunity Zones are those places where there is some,
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: where the per capita income is below a certain amount.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: And if one invests in that zone, if you will,
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: and stays there for a certain number of years, they
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: can walk away as their sweat equity with a very
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: large tax-free profit. Now, to me, that's, if you're willing
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: to go to a place like parts of New Haven
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: or parts of Norwich or parts of Bridgeport or, you know,
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: even going rural, right? There's a large part of rural
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: opportunity zones, you know, moving up the line, you know, Rogers, Killingly.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: If you're willing to do that, then you deserve to
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: take out what you get. Bob, this state has our
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: governor and our should-be-abolished Department of Economic and Community Development
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: have declared no, N-O, none, zero, zilch, nada, opportunity zones. Now,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: if I'm an investor and if I want to invest something, property, plant,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: and equipment, I'm not particular in as much as the
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: state I'm investing to. It's like, I love Connecticut. I'm
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: going to invest in Connecticut because I love Connecticut. No,
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: I'm going to invest in the place that is the
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: most favorable to me. And it's like, but then again,
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: when I make an investment in state A, state number
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: A or letter A, I can't go to state B
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: because I've already invested my capital. And here we are
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: in September. Nothing's happening. We've completely missed this train. I
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: don't hear anybody talking about it because as well as
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: I understand it, there's 243 possible zones in Connecticut. Now,
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: that speaks horrible economic conditions, if you will, in the state.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: The governor's supposed to nominate, I believe, at 63. He's
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: nominated nothing. So wherever this capital is going, it ain't
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: coming here. It's not creating those jobs. And you don't
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: hear anybody talking about that. You don't hear anybody campaigning
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: about that. It's just It drives me crazy.
- 1:24:25Speaker 33: And I think the big reason why is a lot
- 1:24:27Speaker 33: of these zones, and I hate to say it, but
- 1:24:30Speaker 33: I think they're just being promised for political cronyism or whatever. Hey,
- 1:24:36Speaker 33: we got this building here. We're going to cut you
- 1:24:38Speaker 33: a local tax break or we're going to cut you
- 1:24:40Speaker 33: a local or state tax break for it. The heck
- 1:24:43Speaker 33: with the opportunity zones, so on and so forth. The
- 1:24:46Speaker 33: more advanced investor is going to say, well, this really
- 1:24:49Speaker 33: doesn't make sense to me. You could have declared this
- 1:24:51Speaker 33: an opportunity zone. I could have gotten much more money
- 1:24:54Speaker 33: back than what you're offering me. Why should I even
- 1:24:56Speaker 33: invest in it? Oh, no, no, no. Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 1:24:58Speaker 33: You know, we'll take care of you. We'll take care
- 1:25:00Speaker 33: of you. I really believe that's what's happening, to be
- 1:25:02Speaker 33: honest with you. And I agree with you 100%. To
- 1:25:04Speaker 33: have that many possible opportunity zones in a state as
- 1:25:09Speaker 33: small as Connecticut speaks volumes of how bad the economy is.
- 1:25:15Speaker 33: Contrary to Connecticut is working, Connecticut is moving, so on
- 1:25:19Speaker 33: and so forth. It's not. If you have that many
- 1:25:22Speaker 33: economically depressed areas, what are the problems? The problems will
- 1:25:26Speaker 33: include there's probably high crime. The problems will include there's
- 1:25:30Speaker 33: too high property taxes in that particular location, even with
- 1:25:34Speaker 33: the tax break. The problem is there are not enough
- 1:25:36Speaker 33: skilled workers to do what we're trying to do, and
- 1:25:38Speaker 33: we can't afford reinvesting all this money in this particular
- 1:25:42Speaker 33: property and then spending money to try to train workers
- 1:25:46Speaker 33: who we don't know what their work records are, what
- 1:25:48Speaker 33: their skills are, so on and so forth. So you've
- 1:25:51Speaker 33: got a lot of negatives going into that situation, which
- 1:25:54Speaker 33: compounds the economic problems of the state, of that location,
- 1:25:57Speaker 33: of the Bridgeport, of the New Havens, of the Harfords
- 1:26:01Speaker 33: in Connecticut. And it is a serious economic problem. I
- 1:26:05Speaker 33: just wish someone, anyone, would just wake up who's running
- 1:26:09Speaker 33: or in office right now and say, hey, I think
- 1:26:12Speaker 33: this really needs to be addressed, and let's cut out
- 1:26:15Speaker 33: the infighting on it, and let's get to work on it.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Well, and it's an amazing thing.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: It's like I'm going to swear and violate FCC premises
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: here and use a swear word in Connecticut, Trump. You
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: can't use the word Trump. You can't use the word
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Trump account. You can't use the word Opportunity Zone. Why
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: can't you use the word Opportunity Zone?
- 1:26:36Speaker 33: You know, Tony, that's getting so stale.
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: The hatred of Trump all the time.
- 1:26:41Speaker 33: If they just understood the man is the businessman. He
- 1:26:45Speaker 33: knows what he's doing. for crying out loud. He's given
- 1:26:49Speaker 33: so many different opportunities to so many different states, both
- 1:26:52Speaker 33: Democrat and Republican states, to get the economy moving, become
- 1:26:56Speaker 33: a more self-sufficient economy. Why is this wrong is beyond
- 1:27:01Speaker 33: my comprehension. I don't understand it anymore. I really don't.
- 1:27:04Speaker 33: And I'm tired of hearing that everything is Trump's fault,
- 1:27:07Speaker 33: so on and so forth. Well, no, it's not. In Connecticut,
- 1:27:10Speaker 33: if you look at things, it's the Democratic Party's fault.
- 1:27:12Speaker 33: They've been in office for how many years They've controlled
- 1:27:15Speaker 33: all levels of state government, basically, for many, many years.
- 1:27:20Speaker 33: And this is the record they're running on. And this
- 1:27:22Speaker 33: is the record that, in some cases, some of them
- 1:27:25Speaker 33: will be reelected on. And why? What is the point
- 1:27:28Speaker 33: of it? It's like you and I not going to
- 1:27:30Speaker 33: work and expecting a promotion daily, you know, every week,
- 1:27:33Speaker 33: every year, or a raise every year, because look at me.
- 1:27:37Speaker 33: I'm here, so I want it. That type of situation.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: Well, the amazing thing with all of that is they
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: will say, okay, we can't mention that dirty five-letter word,
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: but whenever there's federal money being passed out, they're all
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: there at the peach baskets. It's just like, well, if
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: you hate the man that much, don't take federal money.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: It's either one or the other, but you can't have one.
- 1:28:00Speaker 33: Well, they want it both ways.
- 1:28:03Speaker 44: Exactly.
- 1:28:04Speaker 33: It's just, again, tiring to listen to. You know, their
- 1:28:08Speaker 33: hatred of federal government, their hatred of all things Trump,
- 1:28:11Speaker 33: and at the same time, oh, we need this, we
- 1:28:13Speaker 33: need that. Oh, you can't cut that. You can't cut this.
- 1:28:16Speaker 33: You can't cut that. You know, it doesn't even make
- 1:28:19Speaker 33: sense anymore. And again, if we had a little stronger
- 1:28:22Speaker 33: media in the state, they would start questioning these things
- 1:28:26Speaker 33: and say, well, you know, this doesn't make sense economically.
- 1:28:29Speaker 33: Look at a pure economics here. If the state was vibrant,
- 1:28:33Speaker 33: businesses would be moving into the state. There would not
- 1:28:35Speaker 33: be that many opportunities owned. There will be peer, there
- 1:28:38Speaker 33: will be accessible, unemployment rates, not one of the highest
- 1:28:41Speaker 33: rates in the country. There would be a stable tax base.
- 1:28:44Speaker 33: There would be lower taxes. There wouldn't be $ 28 billion
- 1:28:48Speaker 33: worth of spending where you can't account for probably half
- 1:28:50Speaker 33: of it. You wouldn't have these situations right now. But
- 1:28:54Speaker 33: yet you do. And yet it's supposed to be accepted.
- 1:28:57Speaker 33: It's supposed to be embraced. It's supposed to be glorified it.
- 1:29:00Speaker 33: Look at what we are doing. I mean, you just
- 1:29:02Speaker 33: got to stop, look at it, and in many cases
- 1:29:05Speaker 33: just laugh at what they're talking about.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's getting to the point where it's not
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: particularly funny. What has bothered me going back to, I'll
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: go back in my brain or what's left of it
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: as far as Lego. When Lego said, you know, we're
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: getting out of here. And others have followed. And then
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: the litany. And then it was just this whole thing of, well,
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: Lego's getting out of here. Stefanowski pointed to Lamont and said, well,
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: that's your fault. Lamont pointed to Stefanowski and said, well,
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: that's Trump's fault. And no one gets to the fundamentals
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: of why is Lego pulling out. And the biggest thing, Bob,
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: which honestly, truthfully, did not get enough airplay whatsoever. is
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: Stanley Black and Decker.
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: Correct.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: It was this thing. I mean, Stanley was like New Britain.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: That was like bread and butter going back years and
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: years and years. And all of a sudden, this corporation decides,
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: maybe not all of a sudden, but they say, we're
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: finally going to get out of here and maybe we'll
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: keep our branding.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Maybe we'll keep offices here. Maybe we won't. But there
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: ain't nothing happening here.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: The then mayor, Erin Stewart, I mean, from what I'm
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: looking at and what I've seen, I didn't think she
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: knew Stanley Black and Decker from a Stanley Steamer antique automobile.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: And it was like, well, that was I thought they
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: were doing OK, I think. And it's just I'm saying
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: to myself, look at what they're doing in Mission, Texas.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: Look at what they're building and what are they using?
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: They're using Opportunity Zones. They're using the Working Families Tax Act.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: They're using OBBBA. They're creating things. They're using artificial intelligence.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: All these things which are going to, quote-unquote, be a
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: part of our economic lexicon going into the 21st century.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: And it's just like we're sitting there like the house
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: on the road gone by with a barrel saying.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: You know, well, yeah, they left.
- 1:31:15Speaker 16: So what?
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: And like.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: When does the light go on, Bob? This is where
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I'm at.
- 1:31:21Speaker 33: Well, I wonder that, too. And again, you know, we've been, Tony,
- 1:31:25Speaker 33: you and I have been talking about this for years.
- 1:31:27Speaker 33: I mean, nothing changes. And I don't understand why there
- 1:31:33Speaker 33: is not more foresight, there's not more realization, whether you're
- 1:31:38Speaker 33: a Democrat or a Republican or from an independent source,
- 1:31:42Speaker 33: independent party, that you don't see the economic turmoil, the
- 1:31:48Speaker 33: economic calamity, the economic hopelessness of a state that really
- 1:31:54Speaker 33: has just lost its way because of its quest to
- 1:31:57Speaker 33: satisfy all things liberal, all things politically correct, all things DEI,
- 1:32:03Speaker 33: so on and so forth. It is wrong. It hurts
- 1:32:06Speaker 33: the people who are still the backbone of the state,
- 1:32:09Speaker 33: who go to work every day, whether it's at a
- 1:32:12Speaker 33: retail job, or they have their own business, or they
- 1:32:16Speaker 33: have a lawn cutting business, so on and so forth.
- 1:32:18Speaker 33: Whatever it is, they're working, they're producing, they are productive,
- 1:32:23Speaker 33: they are creating revenue, which gets channeled into taxes, gets
- 1:32:28Speaker 33: channeled into personal spending, consumption spending, savings and investment. That's
- 1:32:34Speaker 33: how our economy works. And you could try to twist
- 1:32:38Speaker 33: it every which way you want, No matter what, this
- 1:32:42Speaker 33: is how our economy works. Government does not just come
- 1:32:46Speaker 33: up with this money and hand it to their political
- 1:32:49Speaker 33: cronies and everything is all right. Everything is created. You
- 1:32:52Speaker 33: have a state job for the rest of your life.
- 1:32:54Speaker 33: You have no accountability. You're fine. It does not work
- 1:32:58Speaker 33: that way, contrary to what they want to believe, because
- 1:33:00Speaker 33: at some point the money runs out. Look at the
- 1:33:03Speaker 33: federal government, $ 40 trillion national debt. When I started teaching
- 1:33:07Speaker 33: in 1982, I said that the national debt is fast
- 1:33:10Speaker 33: approaching $ 1 trillion. I would write it on the blackboard,
- 1:33:13Speaker 33: $ 1 trillion. And what happened? It's at $ 40 trillion now.
- 1:33:19Speaker 33: Nobody's listening. Nobody's comprehending the problems economically, especially in a
- 1:33:25Speaker 33: state as small as Connecticut and with as little population
- 1:33:30Speaker 33: as it actually has.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: And diminishing nonetheless. I mean, the To the point when
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: the light goes on, it's where— this.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: Is the thing which I say to myself. The debt mushrooms,
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: you know, we hear the thing about the fiscal guardrails
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: and what a good thing that we have the fiscal guardrails.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: And one candidate will criticize the other as to the
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: fact that they want to blow the fiscal guardrails. And
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: to me, the fiscal guardrails, although not, shall I say,
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: useless— This is like making your monthly credit card payment.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: But when that bill comes due on those unfunded mandates,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: I mean, that ain't that long in coming. And it's
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: where do you go after that?
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: This is the thing that blows my mind.
- 1:34:24Speaker 33: Well, they have no plan for where to go after that.
- 1:34:26Speaker 33: They're claiming victory, and they're starting to pay down some
- 1:34:30Speaker 33: of their pension deficits. But it's still not enough. You
- 1:34:33Speaker 33: still have so many different bonds that get rolled over
- 1:34:37Speaker 33: year in and year out that never get paid back.
- 1:34:40Speaker 33: Now interest rates are higher, so they're paying more interest
- 1:34:44Speaker 33: on those same bonds, so on and so forth. And
- 1:34:47Speaker 33: how much more are you going to tax the people
- 1:34:49Speaker 33: in the state for then, again, to have more of
- 1:34:52Speaker 33: the higher-income individuals move out of the state? You know,
- 1:34:57Speaker 33: we are at a point, realistically... Again, I reiterate, I
- 1:35:02Speaker 33: can't stress this enough. Someone needs to take charge of
- 1:35:07Speaker 33: what's going on economically in the state. It's obviously not
- 1:35:11Speaker 33: any state commission. It's obviously not any elected official. It
- 1:35:15Speaker 33: has to come out of the private sector. The private
- 1:35:17Speaker 33: sector has to really, you know, put it to the
- 1:35:19Speaker 33: state and say, listen, unless you change things here, unless
- 1:35:22Speaker 33: you create a better economic environment, we're out of here.
- 1:35:25Speaker 33: And multiply that by, you know, the last major businesses
- 1:35:28Speaker 33: in the state then maybe somebody will wake up from
- 1:35:32Speaker 33: it one way or the other. It just doesn't make sense.
- 1:35:35Speaker 33: We're looking at basic laws of economics. In Connecticut, it
- 1:35:39Speaker 33: seems that there's a separate rule of economics, and that
- 1:35:42Speaker 33: is government will take care of you from cradle to grave. Well,
- 1:35:44Speaker 33: they can't. It's impossible to, and it will never happen.
- 1:35:48Speaker 33: It creates more and more economic failure. So if you
- 1:35:51Speaker 33: want to go back to a period of the Depression
- 1:35:53Speaker 33: in the 1920s, early 1930s, you're welcome to it. But again,
- 1:35:58Speaker 33: if you have some foresight and you start saying, hey,
- 1:36:00Speaker 33: we've got to stop. This is out of control. If
- 1:36:04Speaker 33: a nonprofit's getting money, then they need to be accountable
- 1:36:07Speaker 33: for it. If they're not accountable for it, we want
- 1:36:09Speaker 33: our money back. Simple as that. Why is that so difficult?
- 1:36:13Speaker 33: Because it's not politically correct, obviously.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: It's the critical issues, you know, and these are the
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: things that, you know, where I maybe I'm just a
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: sour old guy. Illegal immigration. The fact of We don't know.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: We don't know how many people are voting. And we
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: don't hear any, at least me, myself, and I, I
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: don't hear serious global criticism from political figures saying, hey,
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: this ain't good. We got to stop it. The other thing, really,
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: to sound like Archie Bunker, is socialism. I mean, the
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: fact that we've got this whole thing now that socialism
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: will save us, and we've got to have more of
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: a socialistic thing. And I hear from a lot of Republicans, well,
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: we just can't convince the Democrats of that. It's like, well,
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: maybe you could if you called them socialists and communists.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: You'd get somebody's attention at least.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:37:10Speaker 20: I'm watching this House program.
- 1:37:13Speaker 33: I really believe that the love of this amnesty, the
- 1:37:17Speaker 33: love of this illegal voting system, you know, the driver's license,
- 1:37:21Speaker 33: driving only, so on and so forth. It's just going
- 1:37:24Speaker 33: to help ruin our country, and it needs to stop.
- 1:37:28Speaker 33: Socialism and communism has killed hundreds of millions of people
- 1:37:32Speaker 33: in our world. It does not work. They cannot give
- 1:37:36Speaker 33: any examples of where it has worked. And it gets
- 1:37:40Speaker 33: tiring to the point that you have so many different
- 1:37:43Speaker 33: economic issues. Now you've got to battle communism and socialism again.
- 1:37:48Speaker 54: And for what reason?
- 1:37:50Speaker 33: Because some people are upset, and they're looking, hey, this
- 1:37:54Speaker 33: is going to be a great gravy train for us.
- 1:37:56Speaker 33: We're going to control the wealth, and we're going to
- 1:37:58Speaker 33: get everybody to work for us. What's better than that?
- 1:38:01Speaker 33: So it's very, very problematic. And I do agree with you.
- 1:38:04Speaker 33: The Republicans really need to start shouting out and start
- 1:38:08Speaker 33: really defending our country, defending our economy, and start offering
- 1:38:13Speaker 33: some real solutions, especially in Connecticut. the play we're going
- 1:38:16Speaker 33: to get the state back on track that uh... one-time
- 1:38:19Speaker 33: was one of the night the state in the country
- 1:38:21Speaker 33: once and today people try to avoid it at all
- 1:38:24Speaker 33: costs fatal week it it.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: Sure wasn't in the I don't hear, but what I
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: certainly see, is socialism is a very clever way of
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: taking someone who does not achieve, leaving them at that
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: level of achievement rather than improving them, and then pointing
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: to the other guy and saying, He's your problem as
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: to why you can't.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: He needs to give you money. And, I mean, I.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Don't know why people running for office are not saying that,
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: are not pointing this out. And it's, I mean, because
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: we've got to be nice. We've got to appear.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: I'm not saying to be mean or angry or violent
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: or anything like that. But, man, oh, man, can you imagine?
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: I mean, what becomes of America? basically.
- 1:39:20Speaker 33: My biggest problem is, and again, is the disrespect for
- 1:39:24Speaker 33: the people who had family members who suffered in all
- 1:39:28Speaker 33: these different communist and socialist regimes. And, you know, all
- 1:39:32Speaker 33: that's forgotten. Oh, that's okay. You know, you march to
- 1:39:35Speaker 33: your death. That's fine. It's no big deal. Well, it
- 1:39:38Speaker 33: is a big deal. And it needs to be remembered. And,
- 1:39:41Speaker 33: you know, we have an event coming up on Friday, 9-11,
- 1:39:43Speaker 33: 25 years ago. People's crime was that they went to
- 1:39:47Speaker 33: work that day and they died. They were murdered and killed.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: Did not come.
- 1:39:52Speaker 33: Home. To me, again, we need to wake up to
- 1:39:55Speaker 33: what's going on, especially in economic terms, especially in Connecticut.
- 1:39:59Speaker 33: There's a golden opportunity being given to change government in November.
- 1:40:04Speaker 33: People need to wake up and look at it and
- 1:40:06Speaker 33: understand it.

- 1:45:26Speaker 39: where it's primary day and there's another socialist on the ballot.
- 1:45:29Speaker 55: The most watched primaries will decide who faces off in

- 1:45:39Speaker 55: Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas will face off against Democratic Socialist

- 1:45:52Speaker 39: For a Fox's good old Scott, Saudi Arabia is vowing
- 1:45:54Speaker 39: to retaliate after Iran-backed Houthi militants went on the attack

- 1:46:01Speaker 39: hitting oil tankers in the Red Sea. Oil prices up

- 1:46:25Speaker 20: down here at the coast, but up in the mountains,
- 1:46:27Speaker 20: they've had just over a foot of rainfall.
- 1:46:29Speaker 39: Hurricane Lowell, a Category 2 storm, could also cause flooding
- 1:46:32Speaker 39: on other Hawaiian islands. America's listening to Fox News.
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: Two quick questions.
- 1:46:38Speaker 26: Would you describe your current wireless service as five-star? are
- 1:46:43Speaker 26: you paying more than $ 34. 99 a month for unlimited data?
- 1:46:47Speaker 26: I only ask because in a recent industry survey of 120,000
- 1:46:52Speaker 26: wireless customers, PureTalk was the only wireless company out there
- 1:46:57Speaker 26: to receive five stars in every category, coverage, support, value,
- 1:47:02Speaker 26: and data. And now, until the end of this week,

- 1:47:09Speaker 1: First three months.

- 1:47:25Speaker 26: $ 15 a month for your first three months, there really

- 1:49:55Speaker 23: It's Hugh Hewitt here with Ken and Nick Tumalo, hosts
- 1:49:58Speaker 23: of Tumalo Financial Radio, Sundays on 94.9. Guys, why do
- 1:50:03Speaker 23: taxes get overlooked in retirement planning?
- 1:50:05Speaker 14: Because the tax code is so complicated.
- 1:50:07Speaker 56: You look at it, the 401k is pre-tax money.
- 1:50:09Speaker 15: The Roth is tax-free.
- 1:50:11Speaker 56: Your non-retirement accounts are capital gains, dividends, and interest.
- 1:50:14Speaker 14: Your Social Security is tax-free. taxed by provisional income. I'm
- 1:50:16Speaker 14: giving you all these things and you're probably already confused.
- 1:50:18Speaker 56: That's why you want to build out that two-month retirement
- 1:50:21Speaker 56: checkup to see short, first long-term effects on these type
- 1:50:24Speaker 56: of things. Because you never know, you might have been
- 1:50:26Speaker 56: saving well in those 401ks and you might have a
- 1:50:29Speaker 56: required minimum distribution issue at 73 or 75, depending on
- 1:50:33Speaker 56: year of birth. So you really don't want to look
- 1:50:35Speaker 56: at it just on a one-year basis.
- 1:50:37Speaker 14: Oh yeah, I'm going to do a Roth conversion this year.
- 1:50:38Speaker 15: It's going to take care of everything.
- 1:50:40Speaker 56: No, Planning takes year over year on tax planning.
- 1:50:43Speaker 15: You can't just do it in one year.
- 1:50:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:50:45Speaker 35: One of the biggest things that we did find with
- 1:50:47Speaker 35: tax planning, especially for our listeners, was that it has
- 1:50:50Speaker 35: to be done over multiple years to actually gain an advantage.
- 1:50:53Speaker 35: So it's not that simple where you just make one
- 1:50:55Speaker 35: change in one year. A lot of times it's the
- 1:50:57Speaker 35: planning piece of it. And when we do our two-month
- 1:51:00Speaker 35: financial retirement checkup, it actually looks like a big spreadsheet.
- 1:51:03Speaker 16: And it shows the numbers over a whole bunch of years.
- 1:51:05Speaker 35: We like to go out 24, even 30 years at
- 1:51:07Speaker 35: times when we're projecting out. Because if we can pick
- 1:51:10Speaker 35: up on some of these tax things and then start
- 1:51:12Speaker 35: to implement strategies, then what we can do is put
- 1:51:14Speaker 35: in front of you, the listeners, we can put in
- 1:51:16Speaker 35: front of them where they would save money in taxes
- 1:51:19Speaker 35: and how much over time. So it starts with that
- 1:51:20Speaker 35: Tumalo Financial Retirement Checkup, our number, 860-854-3434.

- 1:52:30Speaker 3: Welcome.
- 1:52:31Speaker 33: Welcome.
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: We have the Honorable Judge Nazaro here, Judge John Nazaro,
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: but several announcements. First of all, if you're wondering about
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: the status of matters, I'll direct you to the New
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: London Day of today. And the headline above the fold
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: is Marks, Elsie, Equal Time Talks Stall. Efforts to get
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: radio host and Republican state candidate Lee Elsie back on
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: the air before November's election have bogged down. amid federal
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: election law concerns and unresolved talks with his opponent, Democrat
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: State Senator Martha Marks. I'll let you read the rest
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: of it. Make sure you keep tuning in during the week.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be Angie Lewis and assorted businessmen and businesswomen. Thursday,
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: candidate George Austin running for Congress and State Trooper Todd
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: Lynch in the last two hours.
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: And Friday is.
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: Our 9-11 Remembrance Show. If you're in the honor group
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: of the day on 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk, those
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: that labored on Labor Day. And somehow I think this
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: gentleman to my left here labored on Labor Day. Judge
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: John Nazero, how are you, friend?
- 1:53:42Speaker 57: I'm well.
- 1:53:42Speaker 9: I'm well. It's good to be here.
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: Thank you so much for.
- 1:53:44Speaker 9: Having me again. A lot going on. I had a
- 1:53:47Speaker 9: day of rest, which is nice. Went biking with my wife.
- 1:53:50Speaker 9: It was very bucolic out in Avondale. So here we are,
- 1:53:54Speaker 9: back at work. Short week this week and a lot
- 1:53:57Speaker 9: going on. Thanks so much for having me. And shout
- 1:53:59Speaker 9: out to the Stonington RTC, Republican Town Committee. They got
- 1:54:03Speaker 9: a meeting tonight and there's a meeting tonight. Remember that song?
- 1:54:07Speaker 9: And a lot of Republican high profile folks. Candidates will
- 1:54:10Speaker 9: be there. Saltwater Farm, 6 p.m. Rob Emery is the
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: chairman out there. And folks, you're not limited to Stonington residents.
- 1:54:18Speaker 9: I think candidate Fazio and others and State Senator Summers
- 1:54:23Speaker 9: and Greg Howard and And the one who shall not
- 1:54:25Speaker 9: be named will make an appearance. So come on down,
- 1:54:28Speaker 9: Saltwater Farm. And so those that know, I'm a retired judge,
- 1:54:33Speaker 9: so I'm back lawyering again. And it's always a pleasure. And,
- 1:54:37Speaker 9: you know, Tony D'Angelo, he's got quite the background. He's
- 1:54:39Speaker 9: very modest. You know, the man's got a law degree,
- 1:54:42Speaker 9: and that's why he's so effective here on this program.
- 1:54:45Speaker 9: But I want to talk about a couple things. And
- 1:54:48Speaker 9: sort of last night, going to bed, conviction in the
- 1:54:51Speaker 9: Tupac killings. Of 30 years ago. I don't know if
- 1:54:55Speaker 9: anybody caught that.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:54:56Speaker 9: That's kind of a big deal. You know, in the
- 1:54:58Speaker 9: rap community. And it took so long. 30 years. This
- 1:55:02Speaker 9: guy was on the run. And, you know, Tupac, I'm
- 1:55:06Speaker 9: not deep into the culture. But I will tell you
- 1:55:09Speaker 9: that it was a startling thing. So convicted of murder.
- 1:55:13Speaker 9: And it was a payback situation. And there was a
- 1:55:15Speaker 9: lot of evidence way back when. Gang wars. It's hard
- 1:55:18Speaker 9: to believe it was 30 years ago. You know, so
- 1:55:21Speaker 9: we're coming up on 9-11.
- 1:55:23Speaker 27: Right.
- 1:55:23Speaker 9: Twenty five years for crying out loud. So the whole
- 1:55:27Speaker 9: issue of trials, et cetera, I have to mention the
- 1:55:33Speaker 9: trial out in Massachusetts, of course. And I'm having a
- 1:55:37Speaker 9: brain cramp.
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: Lindsay Clancy.
- 1:55:38Speaker 9: Lindsay Clancy.
- 1:55:39Speaker 46: Yes.
- 1:55:40Speaker 9: And so what's next? You know, and I and I
- 1:55:42Speaker 9: don't think it's been talked about enough because the prosecution
- 1:55:44Speaker 9: is reviewing the situation. And we talk about some legal
- 1:55:47Speaker 9: cases that have impact. And it was after seven days.
- 1:55:50Speaker 9: And frankly, I'm not surprised at the result. Maybe folks
- 1:55:53Speaker 9: out there who want to call in are not surprised.
- 1:55:56Speaker 9: And so the prosecution has to decide, will we go
- 1:55:59Speaker 9: through this again, put the burden to the people? It
- 1:56:04Speaker 9: looks like, I don't know if it's a fact, but
- 1:56:07Speaker 9: it looks like there were 11 in favor of acquittal,
- 1:56:10Speaker 9: one possible holdout. And I actually think the judge did
- 1:56:13Speaker 9: the right thing in not granting the defense motion to
- 1:56:17Speaker 9: excuse the juror. That's not the way it works. You know,
- 1:56:19Speaker 9: if there's a juror who's a holdout, And you can't
- 1:56:22Speaker 9: establish juror misconduct. You don't dismiss the jury and go
- 1:56:25Speaker 9: with the 11. So the prosecution was right not to
- 1:56:29Speaker 9: agree to stipulate possibly to having 11 render the verdict.
- 1:56:34Speaker 9: Shout out to Jack Walsh, the late Jack Walsh, who
- 1:56:37Speaker 9: was a judge and a very accomplished criminal defense lawyer
- 1:56:40Speaker 9: before he was a judge. He was the defense lawyer
- 1:56:43Speaker 9: in what's called the Donnelly Bakery murders in Hartford, Connecticut.
- 1:56:47Speaker 9: And Judge Walsh and I was a young prosecutor in
- 1:56:49Speaker 9: front of him. He said, you know, When you pick
- 1:56:51Speaker 9: a jury, you want to get one guy, one guy
- 1:56:54Speaker 9: who's a problem, one guy that's going to be the
- 1:56:56Speaker 9: monkey wrench in the process. And that's what happened, apparently,
- 1:57:00Speaker 9: in the Clancy case. Right or wrong, advocacy on both sides.
- 1:57:05Speaker 9: And so the prosecution has to decide, do you want
- 1:57:07Speaker 9: to go through it again? You know, some say they
- 1:57:10Speaker 9: have to. They have to hold the system accountable. And
- 1:57:13Speaker 9: if it's going to be a not guilty, it's a
- 1:57:15Speaker 9: not guilty. But, boy, it's a lot of pain. It's
- 1:57:18Speaker 9: a lot of pain for a lot of people, so...
- 1:57:20Speaker 9: We'll see where it goes.
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: In your humble estimation, can you find 12 people that
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: haven't heard that can approach this with a neutral mindset?
- 1:57:33Speaker 4: Oh, it's tough.
- 1:57:34Speaker 9: It's nearly impossible. And, you know, you could talk about
- 1:57:37Speaker 9: change of venue, but it's national news. We have high-profile
- 1:57:40Speaker 9: cases here in Connecticut. And I tell you, it's hard
- 1:57:43Speaker 9: to find people willing to serve. And I will say this.
- 1:57:47Speaker 9: I think the defense lawyer was out of line. OK,
- 1:57:50Speaker 9: I've been doing criminal defense work a lot, much longer,
- 1:57:53Speaker 9: much longer than being a prosecutor. When you go to
- 1:57:56Speaker 9: attack a juror.
- 1:57:57Speaker 33: Wow.
- 1:57:58Speaker 9: That's that's out of bounds. That's out of bounds. I
- 1:58:00Speaker 9: think it's an ethical violation. And I think this Reddington,
- 1:58:03Speaker 9: although he was an aggressive cross-examiner, it's not right. He
- 1:58:07Speaker 9: could be brought before a disciplinary board. Because if you're
- 1:58:11Speaker 9: a juror, and I understand why jurors, people don't want
- 1:58:13Speaker 9: to serve. I actually respect an individual who comes into
- 1:58:17Speaker 9: court and says, you know, I really feel bad for you.
- 1:58:21Speaker 9: I'd like to serve, but I'm self-employed. And if I
- 1:58:24Speaker 9: don't work, I don't eat. Some judges would give them
- 1:58:26Speaker 9: a hard time. There was a judge out in Western Connecticut.
- 1:58:29Speaker 9: He where you're from, Judge Sarsfield Ford, he held somebody
- 1:58:33Speaker 9: in contempt and ordered an arrest warrant to go summon
- 1:58:36Speaker 9: a juror who wouldn't show up. That's not right. If
- 1:58:39Speaker 9: we're down to the point of arresting jurors or people
- 1:58:42Speaker 9: who don't want to serve, I'm going to tell a story,
- 1:58:45Speaker 9: and they're not going to like it. When my brother
- 1:58:47Speaker 9: was summoned to jury duty, I was a judge at
- 1:58:49Speaker 9: the time, and he was summoned to federal court, Judge
- 1:58:52Speaker 9: Peter Dorsey, who happened to grow up in New London, Connecticut.
- 1:58:55Speaker 9: And my brother's summoned to New Haven Federal Court. And
- 1:58:58Speaker 9: I said, Ed, Just tell the judge the truth. He's
- 1:59:01Speaker 9: probably going to suspect you're my brother. And he goes,
- 1:59:04Speaker 9: what do you mean? Well, first of all, you presume
- 1:59:06Speaker 9: most of the criminal defendants are guilty because you hope
- 1:59:10Speaker 9: the cops got it right. So this presumption of innocence stuff,
- 1:59:14Speaker 9: it's a fiction.
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: It's a farce.
- 1:59:16Speaker 9: And you can indoctrinate people all you want. But the
- 1:59:18Speaker 9: fact is we presume them to be guilty because most
- 1:59:22Speaker 9: people know of this concept known as probable cause. So
- 1:59:25Speaker 9: they probably did it. And no matter what the guy
- 1:59:28Speaker 9: in the robe says, you're going to have a hard time.
- 1:59:30Speaker 9: So tell the judge the truth. The second thing, he
- 1:59:32Speaker 9: was an insurance executive. As an insurance executive inculcated in
- 1:59:37Speaker 9: the pro-insurance theory, he wasn't too crazy about plaintiffs and
- 1:59:41Speaker 9: plaintiff's lawyers like his brother John, who's sitting here today.
- 1:59:44Speaker 9: Most of what I do is plaintiff's work. I said,
- 1:59:46Speaker 9: just be honest. But you know what? They're not going
- 1:59:47Speaker 9: to like you. And the judge gave him a hard time,
- 1:59:50Speaker 9: but the judge had to excuse him. He was being honest.
- 1:59:53Speaker 9: So let's stop. The charade, you know, in the words
- 1:59:57Speaker 9: of Captain Hook, let's stop the charade and get people
- 2:00:00Speaker 9: that want to serve. I mean, what rock are you
- 2:00:03Speaker 9: living under?
- 2:00:03Speaker 33: Right.
- 2:00:04Speaker 9: If you haven't heard about the Clancy case, that's the
- 2:00:06Speaker 9: real scare. When people answer questions in voir dire, Connecticut
- 2:00:10Speaker 9: is one of two states. I talk about it all
- 2:00:12Speaker 9: the time. We only have two states in the country
- 2:00:15Speaker 9: in state court where we can ask individual questions of
- 2:00:19Speaker 9: individual veneer men. And that's guaranteed to us by the
- 2:00:22Speaker 9: Connecticut Constitution. There are judges who never represented human beings.
- 2:00:26Speaker 9: They worked for the state attorney general's office. They were prosecutors.
- 2:00:30Speaker 9: They don't understand the value of that, the one-on-one discussion,
- 2:00:33Speaker 9: to find out if the person is genuinely impartial. And
- 2:00:37Speaker 9: it asks a lot of people to donate a week,
- 2:00:40Speaker 9: two weeks, three weeks, be sequestered. You know, for what?
- 2:00:44Speaker 9: The $ 50 compensation or whatever it is per day? You
- 2:00:47Speaker 9: can have it. I'm a trial lawyer, and it's just
- 2:00:50Speaker 9: rough to get people willing to serve. And if you
- 2:00:53Speaker 9: do it God bless you. God bless you.
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: Where do you think this goes?
- 2:00:59Speaker 9: Well, you know, I almost feel that they're going to
- 2:01:01Speaker 9: be compelled to try this case again. And it's got
- 2:01:04Speaker 9: nightmare written all over it. But I think because of
- 2:01:07Speaker 9: the public import of the case, sometimes you have to
- 2:01:11Speaker 9: retry cases. In New London County, and they're not going
- 2:01:14Speaker 9: to like me saying this, there's a lot of cases
- 2:01:16Speaker 9: that have been reversed by our Connecticut Supreme Court murder
- 2:01:19Speaker 9: cases that have been remanded for retrial. And there are
- 2:01:23Speaker 9: a lot of judges assigned to the criminal docket. We
- 2:01:25Speaker 9: lost a civil judge. This is what happens. There's so
- 2:01:28Speaker 9: many ways for a judge to make error when trying
- 2:01:32Speaker 9: a case. And there are no bigger stakes, right, than
- 2:01:35Speaker 9: a murder case or a sexual assault case. There's so
- 2:01:38Speaker 9: many ways a judge can step in it. And the
- 2:01:41Speaker 9: Supreme Court recently ruled in a New London case that
- 2:01:44Speaker 9: the prosecutors didn't do a good thing in permitting perjury
- 2:01:48Speaker 9: in a case. And they remanded it in a sharp,
- 2:01:51Speaker 9: sharp rebuke. by Justice McDonald. And so we had to
- 2:01:55Speaker 9: do it all over again. That means you've got to
- 2:01:57Speaker 9: call the witnesses again. You've got to put the victim's
- 2:01:59Speaker 9: family through the pain again. And I've got to tell you,
- 2:02:02Speaker 9: in sexual assault cases especially, wow. I mean, to withstand
- 2:02:06Speaker 9: one trial, let alone two. And then the murder cases,
- 2:02:09Speaker 9: you've got the victim's family, all the evidence, all the forensics.
- 2:02:13Speaker 9: It's very expensive. So you've got to get it right
- 2:02:15Speaker 9: the first time, and you've got to put your best
- 2:02:17Speaker 9: step forward. I mean, the prosecution took some heat, maybe
- 2:02:20Speaker 9: rightfully so. that they waited too late in the game
- 2:02:22Speaker 9: to get their experts. And then it becomes a battle
- 2:02:26Speaker 9: of the experts. I don't like that. I don't particularly
- 2:02:28Speaker 9: like battles of the experts. I think jurors can see
- 2:02:31Speaker 9: through this stuff. When I was a judge and chief
- 2:02:35Speaker 9: habeas corpus jurist, I had trials four to five days
- 2:02:39Speaker 9: a week on sentenced prisoners doing 40, 50 years. And
- 2:02:42Speaker 9: there was a lot of evidence about involuntary confessions. And,
- 2:02:46Speaker 9: you know, I had one case where there was three
- 2:02:48Speaker 9: people who made confessions and And then they came in
- 2:02:51Speaker 9: 20 years later saying, oh, they were, you know, exacted
- 2:02:54Speaker 9: these false confessions. They were false. And I got an
- 2:02:57Speaker 9: expert in from John Jay College to try to persuade
- 2:03:00Speaker 9: me that all three of them were hoodwinked by the police.
- 2:03:03Speaker 9: You know, unfortunately, it can happen. Peter Riley, the famous
- 2:03:08Speaker 9: Peter Riley case, the death of Barbara Gibbons years ago,
- 2:03:11Speaker 9: where Justice Speziale, then a trial judge, granted a habeas
- 2:03:15Speaker 9: corpus and Peter Riley was set free. Arguably, there was
- 2:03:19Speaker 9: a lot of evidence. to link Peter Riley to the
- 2:03:22Speaker 9: death of his mother. But the case was vacated. So
- 2:03:25Speaker 9: a lot going on.
- 2:03:26Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 2:03:27Speaker 9: A lot of emotions run high. I'm surprised at some
- 2:03:30Speaker 9: of the commentary. And I know many conservatives believe, how
- 2:03:35Speaker 9: can you not find her guilty? I mean, she killed
- 2:03:37Speaker 9: three kids. She should be given the needle. It's not
- 2:03:40Speaker 9: that simple. We don't hold people accountable if they're not
- 2:03:44Speaker 9: in their right mental frame. but whether it arises to
- 2:03:48Speaker 9: not guilty by reason of insanity, temporary insanity. There was
- 2:03:52Speaker 9: a case many years ago, some 50 years ago, Don Spargo,
- 2:03:57Speaker 9: State v.
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: Spargo.
- 2:03:59Speaker 9: There are those out there who might remember this. He
- 2:04:01Speaker 9: worked for Electric Boat, and he was an engineer, if
- 2:04:03Speaker 9: I'm not mistaken, walked into a court in Norwich in
- 2:04:06Speaker 9: the divorce court, looked at his wife and said, you
- 2:04:08Speaker 9: really want to go through with this? And she said, yeah,
- 2:04:11Speaker 9: pulled out a pistol, shot her dead in the courtroom upstairs.
- 2:04:14Speaker 9: I believe Judge Santanello was on the bench, and he
- 2:04:18Speaker 9: was tried, and Leo McNamara represented him. And he actually
- 2:04:22Speaker 9: got a murder, too, if I'm not mistaken. Heat of
- 2:04:25Speaker 9: passion type verdict. And he served some five, seven years.
- 2:04:28Speaker 3: I think he's out.
- 2:04:30Speaker 9: Unless he's deceased. I think he got out. And, you know,
- 2:04:33Speaker 9: because they recognized he was in this fugue, this psychiatric term,
- 2:04:37Speaker 9: out-of-body sort of experience. He wasn't in his right mind.
- 2:04:41Speaker 9: You know, no violent history. Doesn't pose a danger to
- 2:04:43Speaker 9: the public. So these are controversial cases. It does happen.
- 2:04:47Speaker 9: I don't know where it goes. What do you think?
- 2:04:49Speaker 9: What do you think, Counselor?
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: You have a law degree.
- 2:04:51Speaker 9: What can you tell our listeners?
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I can cop.
- 2:04:56Speaker 2: Out and say not my area at all, which is
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: why I have you here. But the interesting thing, I think,
- 2:05:03Speaker 2: is it will go to probably another mistrial. I think fundamentally,
- 2:05:10Speaker 2: this is just my very cursory argument, Stupid way of
- 2:05:13Speaker 2: looking at it. I think we have another one of
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: these John Gotti Jr.
- 2:05:17Speaker 33: Things.
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: You can try them till the cows come home.
- 2:05:19Speaker 9: And you're going to come up with the same thing.
- 2:05:21Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 2:05:22Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:05:22Speaker 9: You know, it's it's very difficult when you got 11.
- 2:05:25Speaker 9: If if you brought your B game, let alone your
- 2:05:28Speaker 9: A game prosecutors. But, you know, sometimes, again, there could
- 2:05:32Speaker 9: be a not guilty. It demands it. It's very difficult,
- 2:05:35Speaker 9: very difficult situation. But there are other things in the
- 2:05:37Speaker 9: news also. We've got some other headlines we were talking
- 2:05:41Speaker 9: about a little bit off mic, and that is there's
- 2:05:44Speaker 9: a couple cases the Supreme Court is now scheduling arguments.
- 2:05:47Speaker 9: One of them is a Connecticut case involving guns and
- 2:05:50Speaker 9: whether or not the ban against so-called assault rifles is valid.
- 2:05:55Speaker 9: So the Supreme Court has consolidated two cases, and they're
- 2:05:59Speaker 9: going to hear an argument in December, and we'll see
- 2:06:01Speaker 9: whether those types of laws— and there's a lot of folks
- 2:06:04Speaker 9: involved in Connecticut— who's Second Amendment people, and they don't
- 2:06:08Speaker 9: like to see this particular law stand, so-called assault rifle ban.
- 2:06:14Speaker 9: I remember a good friend of mine. I talk about him.
- 2:06:16Speaker 9: He's a former very high-level CIA. He retired in 2012.
- 2:06:20Speaker 9: We grew up together in Gales Ferry. We're in the
- 2:06:22Speaker 9: Navy community. And he ended up being a full-time firearms
- 2:06:26Speaker 9: instructor in North Carolina. He said, well, define assault rifle.
- 2:06:30Speaker 9: What is an assault rifle? And, you know, it's interesting.
- 2:06:33Speaker 9: He got very involved with gun owners of America as
- 2:06:36Speaker 9: opposed to the other the other group. You know, I
- 2:06:39Speaker 9: will tell you that we'll see what happens because some
- 2:06:43Speaker 9: of these laws are being struck down. You know, the
- 2:06:45Speaker 9: New York law, the restrictions, Washington, D.C., a lot of
- 2:06:48Speaker 9: these high crime areas. So people who are Second Amendment
- 2:06:52Speaker 9: proponents have some hope, have some hope. Because it is
- 2:06:56Speaker 9: the Second Amendment for a reason, right? Now we're going
- 2:06:58Speaker 9: to get people cranked up. They're going to call. It's
- 2:07:00Speaker 9: the Second Amendment for a reason, folks. The right to
- 2:07:03Speaker 9: bear arms shall not be infringed. It's a shall.
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: One thing I do want to get to before we
- 2:07:09Speaker 2: run out of time because it just moves so quickly.
- 2:07:11Speaker 2: What is happening with the weaponization fund and the precedent?
- 2:07:16Speaker 4: Well, you know, this is weird.
- 2:07:18Speaker 9: I've got to tell you, I think this kind of
- 2:07:19Speaker 9: lawsuit that Trump filed and the publicity over it, the
- 2:07:23Speaker 9: negative publicity, is hurting Trump. It's hurting the Republicans. The
- 2:07:28Speaker 9: judge basically said, well, you've got this weaponization fund, $ 1. 8 billion, right?
- 2:07:34Speaker 9: You have to show a justification on who's going to
- 2:07:36Speaker 9: get the money. So now the lawyers are scrambling. And
- 2:07:40Speaker 9: this is what's stealing the headlines. One can argue that
- 2:07:44Speaker 9: the Republicans are going to take it in the neck
- 2:07:46Speaker 9: in the midterms because of this kind of lawsuit and
- 2:07:49Speaker 9: the controversy over the ballroom. And you got veterans suing
- 2:07:52Speaker 9: the DOJ about construction of the arch, right, whether the
- 2:07:58Speaker 9: arch is going to be built. Meanwhile, inflation is climbing.
- 2:08:01Speaker 9: Interest rates are probably going to go up. You know,
- 2:08:04Speaker 9: I heard the talk. I was listening. $ 43 trillion. This
- 2:08:08Speaker 9: is a real deficit. This is going to hurt Republicans, right?
- 2:08:12Speaker 9: So the weaponization fund, a lot of people argue the
- 2:08:14Speaker 9: whole lawsuit was pretextual. How do you put this money aside?
- 2:08:18Speaker 9: And the attorney general nominee, Todd Branch, says, no, we're
- 2:08:21Speaker 9: not doing it, right? We're not doing it. His own guy,
- 2:08:24Speaker 9: Trump's own guy, says we're not going to do it
- 2:08:26Speaker 9: because he knows it's folly. But, you know, this kind
- 2:08:29Speaker 9: of thing is he backed into a corner. Did Trump
- 2:08:31Speaker 9: back himself into a corner where now he's stuck, right?
- 2:08:35Speaker 9: But bad publicity after bad publicity, not a good thing.
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: Well, you know, and I mean, you're asking me to
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: opine on things from the practice chair.
- 2:08:45Speaker 20: Mm-hmm.
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: I've seen taxpayers' clients ruined by government processes. I've seen it.
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: I deal with it now. I've also seen, in.
- 2:08:57Speaker 2: Order to get justification for that, Judge, you've got to
- 2:09:01Speaker 2: go through an unbelievable mousetrap that few people understand.
- 2:09:06Speaker 15: That's right.
- 2:09:07Speaker 9: You have experience in this.
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it's terrible.
- 2:09:10Speaker 2: So I say to myself, and yet you have people
- 2:09:12Speaker 2: wronged by government processes. should there not be redress for them.
- 2:09:16Speaker 2: But the other thing is, I think to your point,
- 2:09:19Speaker 2: this thing came out the wrong end. And then the
- 2:09:22Speaker 2: whole media thing is, well, Trump is writing a blank
- 2:09:26Speaker 2: check for himself, and he made a settlement based upon
- 2:09:31Speaker 2: what was done to him. Now, I will say this,
- 2:09:34Speaker 2: and I did this with the person that.
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: We can't talk about, when we were on the Mike
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: Gallagher show, I looked at the Richard Neal reports that
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: spent millions of dollars looking at the horrible things that
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: the president had done. There wasn't whimper, nothing.
- 2:09:54Speaker 2: He made one stupid error on misjudging a valuation of
- 2:09:58Speaker 2: an easement, which nobody understands. So it's like it's– I
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: get torn with it, but I understand we're in our
- 2:10:07Speaker 2: last minute.
- 2:10:08Speaker 9: No, that's okay. It's a bad look. That's the problem.
- 2:10:11Speaker 9: It's a bad look any way you cut it. People
- 2:10:13Speaker 9: forget about the merits of something, right? But you look
- 2:10:16Speaker 9: at the appearance. Appearance matters. And what's the flavor? What
- 2:10:20Speaker 9: do you take away from the whole process? And I
- 2:10:24Speaker 9: certainly agree. And the old expression, right, the process is
- 2:10:26Speaker 9: the punishment. And gosh knows they put him through so much.
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: They sure did.
- 2:10:30Speaker 9: You know, I'd like to have a conversation with Nora Dennehy,
- 2:10:34Speaker 9: who's now a justice of the Supreme Court. I've talked
- 2:10:36Speaker 9: about this before because Nora was a prosecutor, U.S.
- 2:10:39Speaker 16: Attorney.
- 2:10:39Speaker 9: She jailed John Rowland twice and she stepped off the investigation,
- 2:10:44Speaker 9: you know, into the Durham report. She stepped down from
- 2:10:47Speaker 9: that and she revealed in her confirmation hearings that she
- 2:10:50Speaker 9: felt it was very politicized. She said, basically, I'm being pressured,
- 2:10:54Speaker 9: you know. Well, I think we're getting the bell. All right,
- 2:10:56Speaker 9: we got the bell.
- 2:10:57Speaker 2: It's Tony D'Angelo, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk. Your call

- 2:20:34Speaker 2: If you labored on Labor Day, then you are in
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: the honor group of the day on 94.9. I understand
- 2:20:40Speaker 2: we have callers who will save me from myself. First,
- 2:20:44Speaker 2: we have Jan. Jan, how are you, dear?
- 2:20:47Speaker 59: I'm doing pretty well. You sound like you're doing well.
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: Well, actually, I've got a lot of help today, so
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: I'm very grateful.
- 2:20:54Speaker 59: Well, yeah, that's good. So, you know, we haven't talked
- 2:20:58Speaker 59: about the missing children in a while. So it's very
- 2:21:03Speaker 59: disappointing that the media hasn't done much reporting on Xavier Beccaria.
- 2:21:12Speaker 59: It's Beccaria, yeah, was killed. being looked into because the
- 2:21:19Speaker 59: whistleblower games forward about those kids that are missing. And
- 2:21:25Speaker 59: the media is pretty much ignoring it. Now, there were
- 2:21:28Speaker 59: just about 480,000 unaccompanied minors who came over that border.
- 2:21:36Speaker 59: I mean, that is a lot of children. Now, some
- 2:21:39Speaker 59: of them were gang members, you know, like they.
- 2:21:42Speaker 9: Were 15, 16.
- 2:21:42Speaker 59: And some of them were teenagers brought over and forced
- 2:21:49Speaker 59: into gang work. We know that. We know that they've
- 2:21:53Speaker 59: been found in various industries and et cetera. But many
- 2:21:58Speaker 59: of those were very, very young children. And the person
- 2:22:03Speaker 59: who blew the whistle on them was actually from El Salvador. Well,
- 2:22:08Speaker 59: her parents were from El Salvador. They came to California.
- 2:22:13Speaker 59: She was born here. And she was working to take
- 2:22:17Speaker 59: care of the kids, and she was horrified to discover
- 2:22:22Speaker 59: how they were being treated. So she blew the whistle
- 2:22:26Speaker 59: on it. In May, they asked Javier Beccaria about it,
- 2:22:31Speaker 59: and nothing much that I can really have heard has
- 2:22:36Speaker 59: happened about that. So she said kids were routinely ignored
- 2:22:42Speaker 59: because of pressure to read– reunified minors with sponsors despite
- 2:22:48Speaker 59: no between children and people who claim siblings were separated
- 2:22:56Speaker 59: kids were moved out in the dark of night kids
- 2:23:01Speaker 59: were raped a 14 year old was raped there or
- 2:23:08Speaker 59: etc etc I mean we could go on and on
- 2:23:10Speaker 59: with this.
- 2:23:12Speaker 33: This is a shame.
- 2:23:13Speaker 59: This is a blot on America. And who has found
- 2:23:17Speaker 59: some of these kids?
- 2:23:19Speaker 33: ICE.
- 2:23:20Speaker 34: All right.
- 2:23:20Speaker 59: This is one of the things that bothered me. You
- 2:23:23Speaker 59: might be upset about some of the methods of ICE
- 2:23:26Speaker 59: or this or that. Most of the time I hear
- 2:23:29Speaker 59: from people that they're misinformed or, you know, the ICE
- 2:23:33Speaker 59: agent really did, you know, do something wrong. However, Those
- 2:23:38Speaker 59: are the only people, as far as I know, if
- 2:23:40Speaker 59: you know some other agencies, I mean, local police I
- 2:23:44Speaker 59: know find them, et cetera. It's law enforcement. It's ICE
- 2:23:48Speaker 59: who has found these kids. These kids, this is a
- 2:23:53Speaker 59: stain on America, and it's very disturbing to think that
- 2:23:58Speaker 59: people are so involved in their politics, their party politics,
- 2:24:03Speaker 59: whether it's voters or or members of a party who
- 2:24:06Speaker 59: won't break with their party and vote, that they can
- 2:24:11Speaker 59: ignore 480,000 missing children. It's a sin, isn't it, Tony?
- 2:24:20Speaker 2: Well, you have me thinking, which is a rare moment,
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: but my first thought, Jan, is where's Catholic Charities? I mean,
- 2:24:30Speaker 2: this is what Catholic Charities used to do.
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: They would be the advocate.
- 2:24:36Speaker 2: For the lost, the orphaned, the people who had no,
- 2:24:41Speaker 2: you know, the protector of those that cannot protect themselves. Now,
- 2:24:47Speaker 2: I will say this as one who was raised Catholic.
- 2:24:51Speaker 2: You can be whatever religion you choose to be. But
- 2:24:56Speaker 2: I get a lot of mail in from deceased Catholic clients.
- 2:25:00Speaker 2: They keep me on the list because When I was
- 2:25:02Speaker 2: receiving mail for them, I would get that in my lockbox.
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: And what I'm getting, rather than that thought I have
- 2:25:10Speaker 2: of the welfare of people, are we sure we can
- 2:25:14Speaker 2: protect them? Well, a lot of the literature I read
- 2:25:19Speaker 2: is no person is illegal. We welcome everybody. We can't
- 2:25:24Speaker 2: turn people away. And I'm saying to myself.
- 2:25:28Speaker 2: If you really feel that you can handle the masses
- 2:25:31Speaker 2: and have these kids wandering around, you don't know what's
- 2:25:34Speaker 2: happening to them. To your point, they're getting raped. They're
- 2:25:36Speaker 2: getting hurt. They're being exploited. I mean, it's like I
- 2:25:41Speaker 2: I'm sitting here listening to you and I'm cringing. It's
- 2:25:44Speaker 2: like the world has gone mad now.
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: You know, there's a.
- 2:25:48Speaker 2: A guy years ago walking around Nazareth called Jesus that said,
- 2:25:51Speaker 2: if you hurt that kid, you know, it'd be better
- 2:25:55Speaker 2: for you. If you had a millstone, you were dragged
- 2:25:57Speaker 2: in the sea. I mean, it's just this thing. How
- 2:25:59Speaker 2: can you not follow your ideology, which is based on
- 2:26:05Speaker 2: for their perception?
- 2:26:06Speaker 1: They call it the Holy Scriptures.
- 2:26:08Speaker 2: And I listen. I mean, I'm so grateful that you're
- 2:26:12Speaker 2: mentioning this. Hundreds of thousands of people will listen to it.
- 2:26:15Speaker 2: I mean, now I'm going to be a whole lot
- 2:26:19Speaker 2: more aware of where I'm going, what's happening to children.
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: This is really disgraceful and disgusting.
- 2:26:25Speaker 3: And it is.
- 2:26:27Speaker 59: And the sheer numbers of them, that's just the ones
- 2:26:30Speaker 59: we know about. We also know many of them were
- 2:26:33Speaker 59: actually brought to America because Americans considered the, I would
- 2:26:39Speaker 59: call it the kind of... children's market and then moved from,
- 2:26:44Speaker 59: you know, they moved them up from mostly from Central America,
- 2:26:49Speaker 59: South America, Mexico, moved them into Connecticut. Connecticut, yes, into
- 2:26:55Speaker 59: the Connecticut as well as the entire country. And we
- 2:26:58Speaker 59: became a distribution point. Look, I know some people don't
- 2:27:03Speaker 59: believe in any sort of God, but I think that
- 2:27:06Speaker 59: a lot of people believe in a God of some kind.
- 2:27:11Speaker 59: You really think God is going to bless us or
- 2:27:15Speaker 59: this country when we are a distribution point for minor
- 2:27:20Speaker 59: children for abuse, whether it's slave labor, whether it's sexual abuse,
- 2:27:25Speaker 59: whether people buy them almost like servants take them into
- 2:27:29Speaker 59: the house. I remember when I was adopting my daughter
- 2:27:33Speaker 59: from South Korea. Part of the home study was to
- 2:27:37Speaker 59: make sure you weren't adopting children a child, especially an
- 2:27:43Speaker 59: older child, to bring them in as a servant because
- 2:27:45Speaker 59: people did that or tried to do that. Not with
- 2:27:48Speaker 59: this agency.
- 2:27:49Speaker 49: It was reputable.
- 2:27:50Speaker 59: They made sure that wasn't happening. But there is no
- 2:27:56Speaker 59: way we are going to reap any good from this.
- 2:27:59Speaker 59: And anybody who is up there, and I know Christians
- 2:28:03Speaker 59: who don't like ICE, and they won't listen when I
- 2:28:06Speaker 59: try to point out, you may not like some of
- 2:28:10Speaker 59: what ICE does, you may have your theories about immigration,
- 2:28:14Speaker 59: but they're the ones who are rescuing these kids.
- 2:28:18Speaker 1: Well, nobody else does.
- 2:28:19Speaker 59: Well, thank you, Coach.
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: And thank you, Jan.
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: And it's 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk, and I understand
- 2:28:26Speaker 2: we have our friend Coach Leo.
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: Leo, how are you, pal?
- 2:28:30Speaker 33: Hey, Tony, good to hear you.
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 2:28:32Speaker 34: Hope everything's well.
- 2:28:34Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:28:34Speaker 34: You know, I listened to Jan just now, and, you know,
- 2:28:37Speaker 34: part of the problem with this whole stealing of these.
- 2:28:40Speaker 33: Kids, our country's become soft.
- 2:28:43Speaker 34: I mean, if they got just one, one perpetrator, and
- 2:28:48Speaker 34: dealt with them in the old biblical sense of an
- 2:28:50Speaker 34: eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, maybe some
- 2:28:53Speaker 34: of the other ones would think twice before they try
- 2:28:55Speaker 34: to traffic these kids or steal these kids.
- 2:28:58Speaker 33: You know, my.
- 2:28:59Speaker 34: Intent this morning, though, I wanted to talk.
- 2:29:01Speaker 33: Chris.
- 2:29:01Speaker 34: Powell wrote an article in that rag-of-a-day paper this morning.
- 2:29:06Speaker 34: I can't believe they even let him print... They print
- 2:29:08Speaker 34: his articles about education, and the Lamont and the state
- 2:29:15Speaker 34: educators are touting the minuscule improvement in standardized test.
- 2:29:20Speaker 33: Scores, you know?
- 2:29:21Speaker 34: And it's another example, Tony, of the old line with statistics.
- 2:29:26Speaker 34: So I think One study showed them they went up
- 2:29:29Speaker 34: six-tenths of a percent, and another, there was another one
- 2:29:32Speaker 34: that was maybe less than that, or six percent. But,
- 2:29:36Speaker 34: you know, at the end of the day, first of all,
- 2:29:39Speaker 34: any of these standardized tests, these high-stakes tests, are socioeconomically biased,
- 2:29:45Speaker 34: because you're taking a one-size-fits-all assessment, and you're trying to
- 2:29:51Speaker 34: put kids of all different abilities and have them take
- 2:29:54Speaker 34: it and then base your statistics and results offer those scores.
- 2:29:59Speaker 33: And I think that's wrong.
- 2:30:02Speaker 34: The other thing is, and you were talking about taxes
- 2:30:05Speaker 34: and people complain about the amount of money in education.
- 2:30:10Speaker 34: Until we get our minds right and start working from
- 2:30:14Speaker 34: preschool to about third grade, maybe in some cases fourth grade,
- 2:30:19Speaker 34: and go back to teaching reading, writing, mathematics, and basic science...
- 2:30:26Speaker 34: We're never going to get ahead. We're going to be
- 2:30:27Speaker 34: at the bottom of the apple barrel forever because when
- 2:30:31Speaker 34: you want to teach all these avant-garde, you know, let's
- 2:30:36Speaker 34: play a game, let's, you know, and I'm not saying
- 2:30:40Speaker 34: that the arts and music and all that stuff is
- 2:30:41Speaker 34: not important, but God's sakes, Tony, our kids can't read
- 2:30:46Speaker 34: and write. They don't know basic.
- 2:30:49Speaker 33: Facts about history, right?
- 2:30:51Speaker 59: Civics.
- 2:30:53Speaker 34: And I think until we do that, We're kind of
- 2:30:57Speaker 34: the laughing stock, and we get, for every bona fide
- 2:31:03Speaker 34: educated kid we put out, we're probably putting out five
- 2:31:07Speaker 34: or six that, you know, can't add one and one
- 2:31:10Speaker 34: and come up with two.
- 2:31:11Speaker 33: And I don't say that in.
- 2:31:13Speaker 34: A cruel way, but unfortunately, I mean, I saw it
- 2:31:16Speaker 34: in my 44 years as a teacher.
- 2:31:21Speaker 5: It's so.
- 2:31:23Speaker 1: Disheartening.
- 2:31:24Speaker 2: And I actually want to get all the callers in,
- 2:31:28Speaker 2: but I've always suggested to people that they should watch
- 2:31:32Speaker 2: that Marva Collins movie where Cecily Tyson played Marva Collins
- 2:31:37Speaker 2: and how she started the school in Chicago and she
- 2:31:40Speaker 2: took the worst kids and made them exemplary because she,
- 2:31:44Speaker 2: and they were all kids of color, she taught them
- 2:31:46Speaker 2: in a way that they could understand as opposed to
- 2:31:49Speaker 2: your point about bias. You know, and she's like, these
- 2:31:53Speaker 2: kids will learn differently than other kids.
- 2:31:56Speaker 1: And you look at.
- 2:31:57Speaker 2: Those kids today, Leo, and each one of them has
- 2:32:00Speaker 2: done incredible things. Listen, we can go on for days,
- 2:32:04Speaker 2: and I'm sure we can, but I do want to
- 2:32:06Speaker 2: allow time for our last caller. Thank you so much
- 2:32:08Speaker 2: for calling. And we've got Dan from East Hampton.
- 2:32:15Speaker 54: Hey, Tony, thanks for taking the call.
- 2:32:18Speaker 3: Of course.
- 2:32:18Speaker 54: I hope I'm not coming too far out of left field,
- 2:32:20Speaker 54: but I just wanted to comment on this. Clancy, the
- 2:32:26Speaker 54: woman who strangled her three children, and how incredulous I
- 2:32:33Speaker 54: am about the fact that you put together a jury
- 2:32:35Speaker 54: in the United States of America and that only one
- 2:32:39Speaker 54: person can view it as a murder and the other
- 2:32:46Speaker 54: 11 can't. I just, and now, I don't know if
- 2:32:50Speaker 54: you saw this in the news, but in Illinois, not one,
- 2:32:53Speaker 54: but now there's two copycat murder people that supported Clancy.
- 2:32:58Speaker 54: They were pretty rabidly pro-Clancy. You know, that they wanted
- 2:33:02Speaker 54: her to just walk out of the courtroom as a
- 2:33:06Speaker 54: free person after strangling her three children. I mean, I'm
- 2:33:13Speaker 54: laughing so that I don't scream and cry. Now there
- 2:33:17Speaker 54: are killing their kids, like, in solidarity with Clancy. I
- 2:33:24Speaker 54: have to say that I feel like we have uncorked
- 2:33:30Speaker 54: some barrel that should not have been uncorked. We have
- 2:33:35Speaker 54: gone off the rails. We're not even debating trimesters anymore.
- 2:33:39Speaker 54: You're talking about toddlers, you know, that they're four years old.
- 2:33:44Speaker 54: We live in a country that's so morally bankrupt now.
- 2:33:48Speaker 54: that you can't look at the murder of a four-year-old
- 2:33:53Speaker 54: and call it murder? I mean, where do you go
- 2:33:57Speaker 54: from here? Where exactly do we go from here? We're
- 2:34:01Speaker 54: like the old heathen nations, throwing, you know, flinging the
- 2:34:07Speaker 54: children up into the arms of the flaming moloch, you know,
- 2:34:11Speaker 54: so that we can have a better crop or a
- 2:34:14Speaker 54: better life or a better lifestyle or whatever it is.
- 2:34:17Speaker 54: And I don't... You know, I'm at a loss to
- 2:34:21Speaker 54: even frame this in a way that is not just tears.
- 2:34:27Speaker 33: I mean, where do we go? If you pull a.
- 2:34:31Speaker 54: Jury of 12 people and only one of 12, one
- 2:34:39Speaker 54: man of 12, the rest wanted to do what? Just
- 2:34:44Speaker 54: let her walk out of the courtroom? You murder your children?
- 2:34:48Speaker 54: and you're just going to go free walking around?
- 2:34:50Speaker 33: I mean, okay.
- 2:34:54Speaker 54: So we're supposed to accept postpartum depression as being an
- 2:34:58Speaker 54: acceptable out for murder? Then can you tell me how
- 2:35:03Speaker 54: we could ever allow... If postpartum depression, a hormonal issue
- 2:35:08Speaker 54: in women, is supposedly the out for murder, then how
- 2:35:14Speaker 54: can we say.
- 2:35:16Speaker 33: How could you.
- 2:35:17Speaker 54: faithfully hire women into any position ever again. You say, oh, well,
- 2:35:24Speaker 54: you know, she opened the drawbridge and let all the
- 2:35:26Speaker 54: cars spill into the bay. She was just having a
- 2:35:28Speaker 54: bad day. Well, she's not guilty, even though 20 people
- 2:35:31Speaker 54: plunged to their death underneath the drawbridge.
- 2:35:34Speaker 33: Or, I mean, the age-old.
- 2:35:37Speaker 54: Joke about not being able to be in charge of
- 2:35:40Speaker 54: the nuclear code.
- 2:35:40Speaker 33: Oh, well, I just got so angry.
- 2:35:43Speaker 54: I was just having such a bad day that I
- 2:35:45Speaker 54: just decided to nuke New Zealand.
- 2:35:48Speaker 33: I mean, seriously.
- 2:35:50Speaker 1: This is really, yeah, it's the thing.
- 2:35:52Speaker 54: It's time for women to sort of, like, get around
- 2:35:55Speaker 54: a sort of core moral structure somehow or another and
- 2:36:00Speaker 54: start trying to, like, redeem their state in life. I mean,
- 2:36:07Speaker 54: these issues, these, you know, these abortion issues, I'm 1.1 million.
- 2:36:13Speaker 54: And this is from the slippery slope of what about
- 2:36:17Speaker 54: rape and incest? or this should be safe and rare,
- 2:36:20Speaker 54: and now we're at 1.1 million, and it's not stopping
- 2:36:23Speaker 54: at the womb. You know, they passed these birthday abortion
- 2:36:27Speaker 54: laws up in Massachusetts, and it's not stopping at the womb, Tony.
- 2:36:31Speaker 54: It's spilling out into their fourth, fifth, sixth birthday.
- 2:36:37Speaker 33: And it's like, well, it's their children.
- 2:36:39Speaker 54: So, you know, they were just We should just feel
- 2:36:42Speaker 54: bad for them because they were having a bad day.
- 2:36:45Speaker 54: And it's not just the women. I mean, one of
- 2:36:46Speaker 54: these copycat murderers, these clancy supporter murderers in Illinois is
- 2:36:50Speaker 54: a guy.
- 2:36:51Speaker 44: He just stabbed up his toddler because he's a clancy supporter.
- 2:36:56Speaker 2: That's my struggle. You know, when the lowest common denominator
- 2:37:00Speaker 2: of human behavior keeps getting lower and we're children. I mean,
- 2:37:07Speaker 2: it was bad enough, Dan, during the 1930s with Jackie Coogan,
- 2:37:11Speaker 2: you know, Uncle Fester on the Adams family and his
- 2:37:15Speaker 2: family just abused him and took all his money. Read
- 2:37:18Speaker 2: about the Coogan's case and Coogan's law in California, where
- 2:37:22Speaker 2: the judge said a child is the property of his parents.
- 2:37:26Speaker 2: And it's like we've gone from that to something right
- 2:37:29Speaker 2: now that's like unimaginable to. And I think what you're
- 2:37:33Speaker 2: hitting on is respect for human life. Where is the
- 2:37:36Speaker 2: respect for human life to where it's wrong to hurt
- 2:37:39Speaker 2: a kid? OK, you know, in these cases of somebody
- 2:37:43Speaker 2: flying off the handle should not be commonplace anyway.
- 2:37:46Speaker 1: We've got to get out. Thank you for calling.

- 2:42:33Speaker 2: Well, everybody knows when they hear the music, the stay
- 2:42:36Speaker 2: of torture is ended. Very, very grateful today for all
- 2:42:41Speaker 2: my guests, Bob Lazeri, Judge John Nazero, and the power
- 2:42:45Speaker 2: hour with Bob Swick. A little story I heard, Adam
- 2:42:49Speaker 2: was walking in the Garden of Eden and was talking
- 2:42:51Speaker 2: to God. And God said, you know, I think you're
- 2:42:54Speaker 2: a lonely pal. I'm going to get you some being
- 2:42:57Speaker 2: to help you. And just do every single thing you can. Cook,
- 2:43:01Speaker 2: be your companion, and everything you'd ever want. And Adam said,
- 2:43:05Speaker 2: what's this going to cost me, Lord? And he says,
- 2:43:08Speaker 2: I'll cost you an arm and a leg. He says, well, hey,
- 2:43:10Speaker 2: what can I get for a rib?
- 2:43:12Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 2:43:14Speaker 2: My engineer's cracking up. Tony D'Angelo, 94.9 News and Stimulating Talk.
- 2:43:18Speaker 2: See you next Tuesday.
