- 0:02When we can once appreciate and accept the fact that forces
- 0:05unseen by us, unperceived by our senses, can and do act on us,
- 0:12pushing us to act in certain ways, pressing on us to move in
- 0:17certain directions, it is but a small step to recognize that
- 0:22there are beings who inhabit these unseen and unperceived
- 0:26regions, and that they have their own goals, objectives,
- 0:30agendas, which they carry out but in their own sphere and in
- 0:36their action upon the physical world.
- 0:40As we develop ever more precise ways to capture and measure
- 0:43unseen forces, we begin to understand more clearly that we
- 0:47do not live isolated in our physical world, apart from the
- 0:53spiritual, mental, vital and subtle physical forces that
- 0:58together make up the action of our external lives.
- 1:03We did not know until fairly recently that activity of the
- 1:07Sun in the form of solar flares could be disruptive to our
- 1:11lives, our ability to communicate, our GPS signals,
- 1:16and the very framework of modern life in its technology.
- 1:21Now we understand that these solar events can have a massive
- 1:25impact on our world. We did not appreciate until
- 1:30recently that various disease states were transmitted by
- 1:34unseen organisms that have a life of their own that can enter
- 1:39into our vital and physical bodies and create conditions
- 1:43under which we suffer. Now we understand that viruses
- 1:48and bacteria and mold spores, fungus and other unseen yet
- 1:53nevertheless present organisms can dramatically impact our
- 1:57lives and our health and disrupt the society in dramatic ways in
- 2:02the form of pandemics and other upheavals caused by widespread
- 2:06disease and the impacts it creates in the world.
- 2:11We did not understand until fairly recently in human
- 2:15existence that an unseen force we call electricity could be
- 2:20harnessed to power our modern industrial and technological
- 2:23development. We did not understand until
- 2:27fairly recently that other unseen forces, such as the force
- 2:32of gravity, controlled much of our ability to live and act.
- 2:38We did not understand the ability of plants to capture
- 2:42solar radiation and convert it into material forms which could
- 2:47provide food sustenance to our bodies.
- 2:51We now understand that there is a spectrum of wavelengths of
- 2:55which we can perceive only a small portion, but nevertheless
- 3:01the unseen unperceived portions still impact us.
- 3:07We are beginning to recognize that other things, which we
- 3:10could not explain through any perceptible cause, have their
- 3:15origin in a vital mental or spiritual realm that coexists
- 3:20with us, albeit at a different vibrational level, and that to
- 3:25some degree these beings and forms inhabiting those realms
- 3:29can influence and project their action into our world.
- 3:35In fact, our world is an amalgam of physical, vital, mental and
- 3:41spiritual forces, interwoven tightly with one another,
- 3:46impacting one another, and together creating what we know
- 3:51of as our existence, Shriorobindo notes quote.
- 3:58If we scrutinize the intimations of superphysical world realities
- 4:02which we receive in our inner experience, and compare with it
- 4:06the account of such intimations that has continued to come down
- 4:10to us from the beginnings of human knowledge.
- 4:14And if we attempt an interpretation and a summarized
- 4:18order, we shall find that what this inner experience most
- 4:22intimately conveys to us is the existence and action upon us of
- 4:27larger planes of being and consciousness than the purely
- 4:31material plane with its restricted existence and action
- 4:37of which we are aware in our narrow terrestrial formula.
- 4:42These domains of larger being are not altogether remote and
- 4:47separate from our own being and consciousness.
- 4:50For though they subsist in themselves and have their own
- 4:54play and process and formulations of existence and
- 4:58experience, yet at the same time they penetrate and envelope the
- 5:04physical plane with their invisible presence and
- 5:07influences. And their powers seem to be here
- 5:11in the material world itself, behind its action and objects.
- 5:17There are two main orders of experience in our contact with
- 5:21them. One is purely subjective, though
- 5:24in its subjectivity sufficiently vivid and palpable.
- 5:29The other is more objective. In the subjective order we find
- 5:34that what shapes itself to us as a life, intention, life,
- 5:38impulse, life formulation here already exists in a larger, more
- 5:44subtle, more plastic range of possibilities.
- 5:48And these pre existent forces and formulations are pressing
- 5:51upon us to realize themselves in the physical world also.
- 5:56But only a part succeeds in getting through, and even that
- 6:01emerges partially in a form and circumstance more proper to the
- 6:06system of terrestrial law and sequence.
- 6:10This precipitation takes place normally without our knowledge.
- 6:14We are not aware of the action of these powers, forces and
- 6:18influences upon us, but take them as formations of our own
- 6:23life and mind, even when our reason or will repudiates them
- 6:29and strives not to be mastered. But when we go inwards, away
- 6:35from the restricted surface consciousness, and develop a
- 6:38subtler sense and deeper awareness, we begin to get an
- 6:42intimation of the origin of these and are able to watch
- 6:47their action and process, to accept or reject or modify, to
- 6:52allow them passage and use of our mind and will and our life
- 6:56and members or refuse it. In the same way we become aware
- 7:01of larger domains of mind, a play experience, formation of a
- 7:07greater plasticity, a teeming profusion of all possible mental
- 7:11formulations, and we feel their contacts with us and their
- 7:16powers and influences acting upon our parts of mind in the
- 7:21same occult manner as those others act upon our parts of
- 7:26life. This kind of experience is
- 7:30primarily of a purely subjective character, a pressure of ideas,
- 7:36suggestions, emotional formations, impulsions to
- 7:40sensation, action, dynamic experience, however large a part
- 7:46of this pressure may be traced to our own subliminal self, or
- 7:51to the siege of universal mind forces or life forces belonging
- 7:55to our own world. There is an element which bears
- 7:59the stamp of another origin, an insistent supra terrestrial
- 8:05character. End Quote Reference Shriorobindo
