- 0:28Ryan: Gentlemen.
- 0:29All right,
- 0:29Kearns: we got it.
- 0:30Ryan: It's Friday night.
- 0:32You're going to Blockbuster.
- 0:34three movies to choose.
- 0:36What are the three movies you choose?
- 0:38Kearns: I'm going by boxes.
- 0:40I'm gonna go by box covers on this one, guys.
- 0:43So
- 0:43Ryan: Okay.
- 0:45Kearns: I'm in Blockbuster, right?
- 0:46I'm walking around.
- 0:48I'm trying to remember these box covers.
- 0:49Now, probably gonna pick up Trick or Treat.
- 0:52I remember that box cover, the VHS cover.
- 0:55Yes, sir.
- 0:55Ryan: good cover.
- 0:56Kearns: I'm looking for pumpkin head.
- 0:57Pumpkin Head was always a big one.
- 0:59Jon: Second
- 1:00Kearns: that Monster.
- 1:00Ryan: on there.
- 1:01Jon: Yep.
- 1:01Second
- 1:02Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:02Jon: in.
- 1:03Kearns: there it is.
- 1:04Pumpkin Head is definitely a, it's gotta be army of darkness.
- 1:07Might be the third because of just that image of him.
- 1:10He's standing there with a shotgun and the girl on 'em.
- 1:13that's an easy rental.
- 1:14But I thought that they live was on here, but I might, I guess not
- 1:18Ryan: on there.
- 1:19Jon: Is
- 1:19Kearns: if it's, they live.
- 1:21All right.
- 1:21Ryan: one down.
- 1:22Six one down.
- 1:23Kearns: I gotta do, they live instead of, I'll do Pumpkin Head, army of Darkness.
- 1:27And they live, because they live has the coolest movie
- 1:29covered probably of all time.
- 1:31For like Blockbuster.
- 1:33Yeah, like that Blockbuster.
- 1:34When you walk by it, you saw it, you knew it.
- 1:37It was there.
- 1:37It was watching you walk around the store.
- 1:39So those are mine.
- 1:40Ryan: Okay,
- 1:41Jon: ahead, Ryan.
- 1:42Ryan: All right.
- 1:43Well, if I'm like a kid thinking about going into Blockbuster, I'm
- 1:46starting off with my favorite right off the bat at Scream Love the cover,
- 1:51talking about box cover and just, it was like hip in 96, especially when
- 1:55Blockbuster was like thriving and that was the movie everyone wanted to see.
- 2:00Especially like my peers in first grade.
- 2:02We all wore the like the Ghost Face costumes and stuff.
- 2:05Just fun.
- 2:05Um, let's see, number two, I gotta go with Friday.
- 2:0913th part six.
- 2:10Jason lives.
- 2:12I saw part four on there, but part six when he gets resurrected, like
- 2:15Frankenstein is like in my brain and it's just a great opening and
- 2:20it's what Scream became years later.
- 2:22Basically, it's a horror film, but it's like making fun of the
- 2:26horror genre, if that makes sense.
- 2:29And Part six does that very well.
- 2:32And it's like, no, it's a silly horror film.
- 2:35uh, the last one, see, I was in between on this 'cause I did see the list,
- 2:40but taking your army of darkness.
- 2:43I have a little, I need a little ash in me, man.
- 2:45Little Sam raimi
- 2:47Kearns: You say Ash will probably do that for you.
- 2:52Ryan: with that.
- 2:52Uh, with that boom, the boom, uh, the
- 2:55Kearns: Boom, stick.
- 2:56Jon: Nice.
- 2:57I like it.
- 2:58I
- 2:58Kearns: All right, John.
- 2:59Jon: All right.
- 3:00neither living dead is a must.
- 3:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 3:03Jon: mean, you'll see I the Romero shirt tonight.
- 3:06re animator is my second.
- 3:08Is love me some re animator.
- 3:10Ryan: Jeffrey Combs.
- 3:12Jon: And
- 3:14I am gonna take a third that fits a, a little bit in a strange way into
- 3:18what we're talking about tonight.
- 3:19I'm gonna go sleep away camp
- 3:21Kearns: Oh, wow.
- 3:25Interesting.
- 3:27Ryan: There's a dong in that too.
- 3:31Spoiler.
- 3:34Kearns: All right.
- 3:39Oh man.
- 3:40All right.
- 3:40Well, welcome to Xenomania guys.
- 3:42We're gonna be rounding out our, what I once thought was a trilogy,
- 3:45but it's not going to be a trilogy.
- 3:4728 years later is our episode for tonight.
- 3:51And we gotta come right outta the gate and tell you we went out and
- 3:53saw it and we are going to spoil that hell outta that movie for you.
- 3:56So
- 3:56Jon: Yeah,
- 3:56Kearns: you haven't seen it yet and you don't want that to
- 3:58happen, you gotta go see it first.
- 4:01Ryan: Yes, go see it and go to the Lowe's a MC in Danbury.
- 4:06Those chairs are comfortable.
- 4:08Kearns: Love Doxing.
- 4:09Us.
- 4:10Ryan: well listen for 20
- 4:12Kearns: Love doxing.
- 4:12Us
- 4:12Ryan: for,
- 4:13Kearns: Ryan lives there.
- 4:14That's where Ryan lives.
- 4:15We live in a different state.
- 4:17Ryan: I live,
- 4:18Jon: Ryan, Ryan lives in a van outside the Lowe's.
- 4:22Kearns: that's sadly.
- 4:23Ryan: by the river.
- 4:23Oh,
- 4:24Kearns: But, uh, yeah, since you shouted it out and put, uh, all of us at risk.
- 4:27Um, we'll, we'll also shout out their customer service and everything that
- 4:32we're awesome and gave John a cool, uh, 28 years later movie poster was sick.
- 4:37It's around that house somewhere.
- 4:39Ryan: You can see it on our Instagram.
- 4:42it on our story.
- 4:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:43We'll probably have it in the beginning of this video too, actually.
- 4:46So, good deal.
- 4:47Ryan: Yeah, true, true.
- 4:48Jon: it nice and unrolled, and then you'll see it rolled up like a dong.
- 4:54Kearns: We're gonna be referencing Dongs a lot because this
- 4:56movie has a big dick in it.
- 4:58Ryan: The alpha Don,
- 4:59Kearns: The alpha dom.
- 5:01Jon: big one, but it also has a bunch of them too.
- 5:03Like
- 5:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:04There's,
- 5:05Jon: there's one that gets a lot of attention, but you
- 5:07know, there's some other, I,
- 5:11Kearns: yeah.
- 5:11Ryan: that, that attention,
- 5:13Kearns: Not all dongs were created equal in this movie for sure.
- 5:17Jon: No,
- 5:17Ryan: that attention.
- 5:18I'm just gonna say that Attention really made a parent leave with his
- 5:23two daughters in the middle of the, actually close to the end of that film.
- 5:27they were like an hour in and I. Kerns pointed it out and I
- 5:31couldn't help self but laugh.
- 5:33But you know, you see so many dongs throughout the film
- 5:37in this, like these parts.
- 5:38'cause they're, they're basically savages and we're gonna talk about that.
- 5:41But when it gets up close and personal, that's when you decide
- 5:44to take everyone outta the theater.
- 5:46Jon: it
- 5:46Ryan: It's already been,
- 5:48Jon: it wasn't
- 5:48Ryan: it's already been ruined.
- 5:50Jon: it wasn't the infidelity.
- 5:52I. wasn't any of the, it was one dong.
- 5:56It wasn't infected
- 5:59Kearns: dong.
- 6:00Jon: and birth giving.
- 6:01It was a giant veiny dong.
- 6:04Kearns: The dong to end all Dons.
- 6:07That's what that dong was.
- 6:09That sucker when he jumps down in that scene into the train and you
- 6:12get the, the camera pans on him.
- 6:14It's on the dong for like a solid two seconds.
- 6:17You're just like, Jesus Christ.
- 6:19But, uh, 28 years later, so Alex Garland's, um, directed,
- 6:25Jon: Wrote,
- 6:25Ryan: uh, ridden?
- 6:26Jon: wrote,
- 6:27Kearns: Britt wrote, and who directed it?
- 6:29Jon: Boyle
- 6:29Kearns: Danny Boyle.
- 6:31All right.
- 6:32Uh, they took some artistic turns with this one.
- 6:34It's an interesting way they started it out.
- 6:37They did a couple things in the middle.
- 6:38We'll probably touch on those first.
- 6:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:41Kearns: Um, but just so you guys get the premise, it's 28 years after.
- 6:4528 weeks later, or no, 28 years after initial outbreak.
- 6:49Jon: I, yeah.
- 6:50Ryan: I think.
- 6:50Jon: initial outbreak, because it really seems like this is one of those sequels
- 6:55that ignores one of the previous parts.
- 6:59' cause a lot of the things they established in 28 weeks later do
- 7:03not play out in 28 years later.
- 7:06Kearns: Oh yeah, true.
- 7:07That they had retaken the island.
- 7:09Jon: Yeah.
- 7:09And the, the lifespan of the infected
- 7:12Kearns: Yep.
- 7:13That's an interesting one.
- 7:14Jon: and the evolution of the infected or
- 7:18Kearns: That's, yeah, that happens.
- 7:20So 28 days, and then at 28 weeks, you would imagine that it doesn't,
- 7:24um, apply, like evolving in 28 weeks compared to 28 years.
- 7:29All right.
- 7:30We get it.
- 7:30but they, we also kind of figure out a few other things as the movie goes
- 7:34on that listeners, you'll understand kind of what they try to do to get you
- 7:37to suspend your disbelief that these things are still crawling around.
- 7:41and I mean, if you suspend your disbelief, it does the job.
- 7:44But John's right, it really does kind of screw up the whole
- 7:47scientific backing of 28 weeks later.
- 7:50Jon: Hmm.
- 7:51Kearns: And I don't have a gripe about that.
- 7:52Um, it doesn't ruin 28 years later for me.
- 7:55Jon: mean, 28 weeks wasn't Danny Boyle, and it wasn't Alex Garland.
- 8:00they went with what would imagine their vision would've taken them too.
- 8:07Kearns: And one of the things they, they leave out though not once in 28 years, did
- 8:12you get the running scene, the fleeing, like with the music, the iconic music.
- 8:18I don't remember hearing the music from the beginning of 28 weeks later
- 8:21and from kind of the end, middle end of 28 days later, when they're
- 8:26running away, like seemingly about to be overrun by these things.
- 8:30They have that iconic music score for this franchise and it's, I
- 8:34don't think it's in this movie.
- 8:35Jon: No, it's a, it's a more in your face score in soundtrack.
- 8:41Ryan: Yes.
- 8:41Kearns: And I think that plays a lot, a big role in how different
- 8:45this is than the predecessors.
- 8:46Ryan: Well, you notice that in the scenes when they're, shown
- 8:49the infected in the woods, the camera color they use is all red.
- 8:55It's again in your face.
- 8:57Like they're tearing animals apart.
- 8:59They're feeding, you see the blood spraying at the cool effect of seeing
- 9:03like the blood spray in the red color.
- 9:06Kearns: Yeah,
- 9:07Ryan: that like they have, uh, we can say again, devolved, they're like savages.
- 9:13And maybe as the other.
- 9:15I think this next one's the bone temple, which is also written by Alex Garland.
- 9:19It might explain a little more into that on how they have be evolutionized.
- 9:24We can say how they're growing.
- 9:26Kearns: evolve.
- 9:27Try and evolve.
- 9:28Ryan: evolved.
- 9:28Yeah, evolved.
- 9:31Evolutionized,
- 9:32Kearns: They
- 9:32Ryan: a new
- 9:33Kearns: EIA dies.
- 9:33We're gonna do that.
- 9:34Jon: the Ryan
- 9:35Kearns: Oh, mans getting bigger, so,
- 9:40Jon: So is the
- 9:40Kearns: so, but your point is well made my friend.
- 9:44Yeah, yeah.
- 9:46Um,
- 9:46Ryan: feel like I'm like Blue Bludo from, uh, animal House.
- 9:50Like once I'm on a roll, I just have to keep going.
- 9:53Kearns: yeah,
- 9:53Ryan: like when
- 9:54Kearns: just the words beginning.
- 9:55Ryan: Pearl Harbor, wasn't it Japan?
- 9:57He's on a roll guys.
- 9:58He's just on a roll.
- 10:00Kearns: So when we start, by the way, we got a pretty decent cast here.
- 10:04Uh, some names that you've never heard before.
- 10:06One name you probably two names.
- 10:07You probably have maybe three names.
- 10:08You probably have, um, yeah, about three.
- 10:12But it starts out with Aaron, Taylor Johnson's character,
- 10:15who I just know as dad.
- 10:17Um, Jody comer's character.
- 10:19Isla is his wife.
- 10:20they're in an ensconced in a living community that's on a
- 10:24perfect little island that's only accessible by this kind of jetty
- 10:29you can walk across during low tide.
- 10:32And their son's, Alfie Williams, whose, uh, name Spike.
- 10:36In the movie, and it starts out with, um, Jamie, his dad, spike going out
- 10:41on their first quote unquote hunt.
- 10:44So you imagine that these people scavenge for certain supplies and things like that.
- 10:48they make mention, they, cut down all their lumber on the
- 10:50mainland and cart it back.
- 10:52And so
- 10:53Jon: Well.
- 10:54Kearns: that's a thing.
- 10:55Jon: I think it's important to also note the beginning beginning, which really
- 11:01doesn't come back until the very end of
- 11:05Ryan: Yeah.
- 11:06Jon: years earlier, the reemergence of virus.
- 11:11And, this kid, Jimmy and some other children locked in a room watching.
- 11:17Probably the most horrifying thing in the, the whole movie is the Teletubbies.
- 11:22Kearns: Well, it's, it definitely hit me.
- 11:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:25Kearns: It's like, damn,
- 11:26Ryan: show the sun.
- 11:27Kearns: we're we're bringing the
- 11:28Ryan: creeped
- 11:28Kearns: out bro.
- 11:32Ryan: that.
- 11:32Jon: then, you know, that scene quickly turns into the murder of the
- 11:37young Lings, except for Jimmy, who may
- 11:40Kearns: But that didn't bother the father that left the movie with the daughter.
- 11:44It was the gay tele tubby that really pissed him off.
- 11:46Jon: I don't, no, he was fine.
- 11:47I think he was fine with gay Teletubbies too.
- 11:50It was.
- 11:52Kearns: No, just the one You don't remember that scandal?
- 11:54The one tele tubby they said was gay.
- 11:56Jon: No, that was sort
- 11:57Ryan: Yep.
- 11:57I remember that.
- 11:58Kearns: Yeah, it was peak.
- 11:59Well, I, I wish that was peak public stupidity, but unfortunately
- 12:02we've gotten, we've evolved too.
- 12:05Jon: devolved,
- 12:06Ryan: Evolutionized.
- 12:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 12:08Devolve is a better word for that.
- 12:10Evolutionized,
- 12:11Ryan: crazy scene though.
- 12:13Jon: yeah.
- 12:13Ryan: like he hears the knocking and like, did he really have a choice?
- 12:17I mean, they would've probably busted the door down eventually,
- 12:22Kearns: did he call out from in there?
- 12:24Is, did he call out like dad or something?
- 12:26Or was he silent when they hit the door?
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:28So that, that's what alerted them that he was in there.
- 12:30Jon: Yeah.
- 12:30I mean I think they knew they were in there 'cause, but
- 12:34that really intensified it.
- 12:35And then they just sort of run in past Jimmy who's able to sneak
- 12:39out to the church where his dad is seemingly pretty happy about this.
- 12:48Kearns: Yeah, he's got the whole,
- 12:50Jon: foretold.
- 12:52Kearns: yeah, it's the, uh, end of days.
- 12:54And this is the rapture.
- 12:55And he's psyched.
- 12:56He psyched.
- 12:57Because if you get, I guess he thinks when you get devoured, you're becoming
- 13:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:02Kearns: Uh,
- 13:02Ryan: he does lead them too, which is interesting.
- 13:05He leads them in like, uh, it's like a, you can say a crusade after he gets turned
- 13:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:11Kearns: um.
- 13:12Ryan: 'em.
- 13:12But it's interesting
- 13:13Kearns: that, is that, uh, spoiler from the next movie?
- 13:18Ryan: Ooh,
- 13:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:19We don't know anything about, we don't know anything about the dad
- 13:21other than it's in the church.
- 13:23Jon: He's, he just sort of gets turned and Jimmy runs off, but he, I, you know,
- 13:28knowing where the Jimmy character goes, that's a pretty significant moment.
- 13:33'cause the fanaticism is already there.
- 13:36Kearns: Yeah, it seems to be genetic.
- 13:38Mm-hmm.
- 13:39Jon: It's
- 13:39Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:39Kearns: Um, that's a cool opening scene.
- 13:42They could have done that music score there, by the way.
- 13:45That would've been a good place for it.
- 13:46But, um, Jimmy, Jimmy, uh, presumably he fleas again, and then we don't see
- 13:54anything and it snaps to 28 years later.
- 13:57And that's where we start on the islands and you get the idea.
- 14:00They're, a self-sustaining community.
- 14:02They've got their rules.
- 14:03They don't waste a lot of time on all that they, that's been so done and overdone.
- 14:07So they, that was a good job by boil and Garland to just
- 14:10kind of scoop through that.
- 14:12So we don't, we didn't waste a lot of time in there.
- 14:15Um, this movie does not skimp on the action, so immediately.
- 14:18Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:18Kearns: You get Spike Dad's making breakfast, and then they're leaving and
- 14:22we get a good view of the mother who's, in a stage of dementia and she's flipping
- 14:27out on the father for taking the kid out.
- 14:30And then they lie to her and say, he is going to school.
- 14:32And she's like, okay.
- 14:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:34Kearns: they leave and they, they establish a bunch of stuff
- 14:37from there going across the jetty, going onto the mainland.
- 14:40And that's where we get our first look at what these infected
- 14:43are looking like these days.
- 14:46Ryan: The crawlers.
- 14:47Kearns: The crawlers were the first.
- 14:48So Yeah.
- 14:48Now, now that we've gotten into it, the, that's the first major
- 14:52shift in the franchise, right?
- 14:55Jon: Yeah.
- 14:56Changes
- 14:56Ryan: Yes.
- 14:57Jon: what the rage virus does to them.
- 14:59Kearns: yeah.
- 15:00And now it feels like a video game.
- 15:01Uh, it feels like last of us a little bit.
- 15:04And that was a choice.
- 15:06Ryan: Evil.
- 15:07Kearns: Yeah, it was a choice.
- 15:08I'm not sure how people are gonna view the choice.
- 15:11I'm pretty neutral on it.
- 15:12I don't love it.
- 15:13I don't hate it.
- 15:13the grubers they called them are the big fat ones that are just
- 15:16crawling around, slurping up worms.
- 15:18Ryan: S
- 15:19Kearns: Um, it's like, okay.
- 15:21And yeah, it was a good, safe choice to shoot that one first.
- 15:25And they're going around bows and arrows.
- 15:26they're not, equipped with automatic weapons or anything fun like that.
- 15:30So they're, they're great with arrows.
- 15:33Jon: And I mean, it it, that's a very logical thing too, because it's still
- 15:38very well established that the, rage virus infected are drawn to sound.
- 15:44Kearns: Yeah,
- 15:45Jon: So
- 15:45Ryan: Yes.
- 15:46Jon: a gun, you really don't want to use it.
- 15:48Kearns: that's fair.
- 15:49The other fun thing about the arrows is how they overhype what
- 15:53the impact of an arrow looks like.
- 15:55They make an explosion sound, and then they blow out parts of the, the infected
- 15:59body when the, uh, arrows, except for that initial gruber where it gets in the neck.
- 16:04Um,
- 16:04Ryan: one just had blood flowing.
- 16:06Kearns: I'm trying to think.
- 16:08Ryan: it's that pop though.
- 16:09It
- 16:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:10Ryan: you as the audience member focused
- 16:11Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 16:12It's necessary.
- 16:13Ryan: oh God, yes.
- 16:14I mean, just, I feel like the chopper scene in 28 weeks, uh,
- 16:19weeks later, unnecessary, this, this fits in the universe, I feel,
- 16:24Kearns: Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 16:26Ryan: you know?
- 16:27Jon: Yeah.
- 16:29It's
- 16:29Kearns: A hundred percent the, yeah, and you need it.
- 16:32That's like the not skimming on the action thing was a good move on their part.
- 16:36Like I, there wasn't a point in the movie where I was like, damn, and I'm
- 16:40getting old and tired and lazy and whatnot, and I was just like, damn,
- 16:43I kind of hope this is over soon.
- 16:45I really didn't hit that, that groove in this, it ended and
- 16:48I was like, oh man, really?
- 16:49It's over.
- 16:49so they did well with the pacing.
- 16:52Jon: Yeah, it's nearly two hours.
- 16:53It doesn't feel like it's two hours.
- 16:56Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 16:57Ryan: No.
- 16:57Kearns: And moves.
- 16:58They don't waste too much time with certain things.
- 17:00Yeah, they, well, yeah, they definitely did that.
- 17:03The bastards,
- 17:04Jon: It,
- 17:04Kearns: but.
- 17:04Jon: it makes you want more of parts of it.
- 17:08Kearns: Right.
- 17:09There was some stuff I didn't like watching.
- 17:11It moved fast, but I was sitting there being really skeptical of the
- 17:15choices that they did, and I'm sure when we glance over those parts,
- 17:18we'll all kind of talk about them.
- 17:19But, we've got them on the mainland and they're foraging a little bit,
- 17:23but they're really, they're just there to get spike to pop his cherry
- 17:26and kill some of these things.
- 17:28And Spike does so, and then they, wind up, running into the next iteration of these,
- 17:34which are still just called the fast ones.
- 17:37And there's an alpha style thing, which basically commands other ones.
- 17:42So you have a tribal unit established.
- 17:44You have thought and control.
- 17:47It's the first time you ever see an infected standing still
- 17:50strategically doing something.
- 17:52Watching, watching what these other people are doing, and then
- 17:56sending others down after them.
- 17:58I fucking.
- 18:00State that concept, it totally flies in the face of the franchise's,
- 18:06like previous precedent.
- 18:08I'm not a fan of.
- 18:09I mean, I've lived with it.
- 18:11I'm not, I don't hate the movie because of it, but I just don't
- 18:13think that was the right way to go.
- 18:15What do you guys think?
- 18:17Jon: I didn't mind it as much as you.
- 18:20they sort of turn the infected into Neanderthals, you know,
- 18:25they no longer wear clothing.
- 18:26they're communicating.
- 18:29I. Uh, you know, very, very basically, and the alpha, you know, is like,
- 18:36like the sort of un almost un killable aspect of the alpha, but the rest of
- 18:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:44Jon: as much.
- 18:45Kearns: Then they said that the, virus is like steroids for some of them.
- 18:48That's how they explain the alpha concept.
- 18:50That's how it got to be 11 feet tall.
- 18:54It's not 11 feet tall, but it's pretty damn tall.
- 18:55Think's gotta be about eight feet tall,
- 18:57Ryan: Like eight
- 18:58Kearns: about 300 pounds.
- 18:59Not a shred of body fat.
- 19:01About a 10 inch cock, maybe longer.
- 19:04Just flopping around
- 19:05Jon: 20
- 19:06Ryan: It's just dragging
- 19:07Kearns: at 28 inches later.
- 19:09Ryan: 20.
- 19:11That's gonna pop up now one day.
- 19:14Kearns: Yeah, no, let's get that in the metadata for the video,
- 19:17Jon: Yeah.
- 19:18Ryan: a spoof.
- 19:18Kearns: it's, I don't know.
- 19:22Jon: The alpha
- 19:22Ryan: I liked it.
- 19:23I thought from,
- 19:24Jon: the alpha kind of takes on almost a Sasquatch quality.
- 19:28Ryan: yeah.
- 19:28Yeah, he does.
- 19:29Kearns: Yeah, a lot of hair.
- 19:30That was the second alpha.
- 19:31They killed the first alpha.
- 19:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:34Ryan: But that took, that took a lot.
- 19:36It took a lot of arrows, it took a lot of strategy.
- 19:38Kearns: Makes you wonder too, there's two alphas in such close
- 19:41proximity, do they not feud over territory and women and stuff?
- 19:45Because that's the other thing I hate by
- 19:47Ryan: Bone,
- 19:48Kearns: fucking and reproducing is on the minds of these things,
- 19:51which further shows thought.
- 19:52And then you're less in the rage virus mode now and you're more in like, uh,
- 19:55like John said, like an Neanderthal.
- 19:58Jon: Yeah.
- 19:58Ryan: Bone.
- 19:59Temple's.
- 19:59Probably gonna explain it more.
- 20:01Kearns: Yeah, probably.
- 20:02Ryan: how I see it going.
- 20:04Jon: or maybe this is, you know, just one of those things that they're
- 20:07choosing to avoid having to address.
- 20:10Ryan: Well,
- 20:11Kearns: Just to move on,
- 20:12Ryan: Jim's gonna be in the next one.
- 20:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:14Kearns: what we keep saying.
- 20:15Ryan: Jim, Jillian Murphy or Cian Murphy.
- 20:18Sorry.
- 20:18Killian.
- 20:19Killian.
- 20:20Jon: yeah, I
- 20:20Ryan: Killian Murphy.
- 20:21Jon: in the cast.
- 20:22I mean,
- 20:23Ryan: I saw him
- 20:24Kearns: Let's see how it goes.
- 20:25Ryan: No, um, Ray, uh, Ray fines, no.
- 20:30He's not even in it.
- 20:31And I feel like the bone temple as we'll get into it, it's
- 20:34very more connected to him.
- 20:36I feel
- 20:36Jon: it's
- 20:37Kearns: Mm.
- 20:37Ryan: that whole tower.
- 20:38Jon: It is.
- 20:39It isn't, I guess.
- 20:41I
- 20:41Kearns: So the viewers don't know.
- 20:42The listeners don't know what we're talking about.
- 20:44Let's do it linearly and get to get to the doctor.
- 20:47Um,
- 20:48Ryan: That's fair.
- 20:49Kearns: so we, they, they run into these things.
- 20:52He gets back to that they shelter in this cabin, which, um, works fine.
- 20:57And then it randomly decides it's gonna fall the night that they're
- 21:00sheltering in it, which is no problem.
- 21:03They just leave and they go back to the jetty waiting for the tide to get lower.
- 21:08Jon: Yeah.
- 21:08Kearns: well, Ryan, right.
- 21:11Ryan: well, they, they leave because, uh, the stampede, a
- 21:14stampede causes that whole house
- 21:16Kearns: Well, he dreamt, he dreamt of that.
- 21:19It was the stampede reel.
- 21:21Ryan: concept.
- 21:22Oh, uh, yes.
- 21:22The stampede was real.
- 21:23'cause they sh foreshadow it when they come by the deer.
- 21:28Uh, running past.
- 21:31Kearns: Okay.
- 21:31That's more believable than the house just fell because the dad, Jamie does say it
- 21:36was just, it's time to go sort of thing.
- 21:38Like he talks about it a little bit.
- 21:40Jon: Yeah.
- 21:40Ryan: the connection you mentioned with the dream is interesting
- 21:44Kenny tell what's going on.
- 21:45Does, you know,
- 21:47Kearns: If they add psychic shit, the next movie's gonna suck.
- 21:52But John, what were you saying?
- 21:53Jon: Um, yeah, the, the, that's one of the elements that I'm wasn't a
- 21:58huge fan of was the dreams and these sort of like, cut in scenes from
- 22:03like medieval battles and stuff.
- 22:06I wasn't a fan of that part of it for sure.
- 22:09It
- 22:09Kearns: It was like they were fight clothing and the
- 22:11subliminal message your face.
- 22:13Jon: me out of moments of the movie 'cause it was, you know, I'm trying to wait.
- 22:17How, what is it?
- 22:18What's just that, why are we, why are there archers and like
- 22:22medieval charges and stuff?
- 22:24What's going on here?
- 22:26Kearns: Yeah, it was weird.
- 22:27Ryan: subliminal messaging.
- 22:29It's trying to illustrate that they're at war and they're
- 22:31training these kids to be soldiers.
- 22:34And it's like, you can see that if you, Alex Garland's an excellent writer.
- 22:39We know this.
- 22:40He could have, he illustrates it perfectly in the script.
- 22:44It's like editing those scenes to make the movie a little longer.
- 22:48Sometimes you don't need that.
- 22:50It wasn't really necessary.
- 22:52Maybe like snippets in the beginning, but not at like a few scenes
- 22:57after, just to clarify, so to say.
- 23:01Jon: Yeah.
- 23:01Ryan: It's, you know, I would've taken more of the red coloring with the rages
- 23:07going crazy, you know, destroying things.
- 23:10I think that would've been cool to add.
- 23:12Kearns: They did little cuts too to like, just to establish, which is
- 23:16flies in the face of a horror movie.
- 23:18But they, like, with the alpha putting the deer's head up on the tree, they
- 23:22decide to do a cut scene showing him doing it as opposed to making
- 23:26you sit there and wonder about it.
- 23:28Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 23:29Kearns: which is, you know, establishes what John talked about earlier, yesterday,
- 23:34is that this is not a horror movie.
- 23:37No.
- 23:38Jon: No, an action movie with scary things.
- 23:42Kearns: And Gore, lots of gore and some, some really, really Girthy Dick
- 23:46Jon: And
- 23:46Kearns: as well.
- 23:47Jon: and a little bit of humor.
- 23:48There are a couple of things that I laughed at.
- 23:51Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 23:51No, it's got it's good movie.
- 23:52Jon: I think it, I think they were intentionally funny.
- 23:55Kearns: Ripping into it a little bit I think is important because
- 23:58they tried to go for something with it and I don't think they meet.
- 24:01They met that pinnacle.
- 24:03Jon: No, I don't, I don't
- 24:04Ryan: Nah.
- 24:04Jon: either.
- 24:05to get back to the story.
- 24:06I mean, it's really the return from this first trip out
- 24:12sets everything into motion.
- 24:14Spike comes
- 24:15Ryan: yes.
- 24:15Jon: there's a big party for Spike.
- 24:18Spike gets a little drunk, goes outside to puke and catches
- 24:21dad messing around with Rosie.
- 24:24Kearns: And um,
- 24:26Ryan: it hard.
- 24:26Kearns: Spike's not a fan of that.
- 24:28'cause mom's having a hard time and dad's getting down with Rosie.
- 24:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:32Kearns: Does Dad get down with her?
- 24:34That's a little, they show a little bit of that too.
- 24:36And Rosie's like, in this, we talked about this a little bit.
- 24:39It looks like she fell out of a Cosmo magazine.
- 24:42She's, she doesn't look like she's living in a post-apocalyptic hell at all.
- 24:46She's definitely got a razor, you know, that much.
- 24:49She
- 24:50Ryan: She's
- 24:51Kearns: perfectly, perfectly put together young lady and
- 24:53then, uh, Jamie's character, a little bit more unkempt looking.
- 24:57he rails her, but they don't show the railing, but he rails.
- 25:00Jon: feel like that sort of is an attempt to make Jamie into kind of a bad guy.
- 25:08And I just, I don't see it that way.
- 25:09I see it, you know, post-apocalyptic.
- 25:12Jamie knows what's going on with his wife.
- 25:15knows Isla is not well and is not likely to recover from what's going on.
- 25:19not in the world that they're in without, you know, we, we will
- 25:23eventually learn what's wrong with her.
- 25:25But,
- 25:26Kearns: Right.
- 25:26Jon: know, without medication, without even a doctor on the
- 25:30island, it's, you know, he's gotta recognize where it's going.
- 25:37And even a spike eventually acknowledges.
- 25:40That he thinks she's dying and that Jamie should thinks that too.
- 25:44So
- 25:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:47Jon: I don't, I don't fault dad for any of his choices there.
- 25:52Kearns: No, I mean, that's a fair take.
- 25:54And you're, you're talking about a guy who's giving up his entire existence to
- 25:58take care of the family care for Isla.
- 26:00It's not like he'd abandoned her.
- 26:01He's just, if he's pursuing some form of romantic thing elsewhere.
- 26:07And keep in mind too, his role in this society is the most dangerous job.
- 26:11He could be dead at any moment, so I get it.
- 26:14Jon: can be
- 26:14Kearns: Um,
- 26:15Jon: no one would ever know because it's also established they're not
- 26:18going looking for these people.
- 26:20Kearns: yeah, when you go out, you're on your own.
- 26:23So, and you've gotta figure even the best of them, you
- 26:26get a one in 10 chance, right?
- 26:28Jon: Yeah.
- 26:29Kearns: Maybe way, maybe worse than that actually.
- 26:32Ryan: You saw the graves.
- 26:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:33Ryan: lot of
- 26:34Jon: So that sort of sets spike at odds with dad and you know, he kind of becomes
- 26:42determined that he needs this sort of mythical Dr. Kelson to come and save mom,
- 26:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:51Ryan: Dr. Kelson
- 26:52Jon: which I know it didn't fully play out in this one.
- 26:56I would imagine it's going to in Bone Temple.
- 26:59It's sort of the catastrophic type of decision the kids in 28 weeks
- 27:05later made to leave the safety and
- 27:12take mom with him to go and find the doctor.
- 27:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:17Ryan: Spike was born in this world.
- 27:19That's a difference.
- 27:20Jon: Well,
- 27:20Ryan: Like he kinda was like raised while Andy and Tammy kind of were
- 27:24like thrown in and just stupid
- 27:27Jon: But I
- 27:28Ryan: Anita, find a picture.
- 27:29Jon: to that moment, to his, you know, up until his first expedition off
- 27:36the island, doesn't really know it.
- 27:39I mean, it's, you know, it's seems like it's
- 27:41Ryan: True.
- 27:44Jon: situation, you know, there, it doesn't seem like it's somewhere that gets
- 27:49overrun by infected particularly often.
- 27:52He may have never, it seems like at times in the that first expedition,
- 27:57he's never seen it infected.
- 28:00Kearns: No, definitely not.
- 28:01them dragging the alpha is like movie magic coincidence sort of stuff.
- 28:06because after they do run back, they do drag an alpha with them that has to
- 28:10be killed 'cause they're out of arrows.
- 28:11It has to be killed at the gates of their community.
- 28:13I. Um, this precedes the stuff that we just talked about
- 28:18with the party and everything.
- 28:20And then after that, spike's character in an effort to save his mother.
- 28:24He learned about a doctor who's out there.
- 28:27And we also didn't talk about the fire.
- 28:29We went over the fire too.
- 28:31Uh, spike noticed a large bonfire out there, and they established this
- 28:34sort of mythical presence of this crazy doctor who's doing terrible
- 28:38things with bodies out there.
- 28:40And, um, and Spike, decides he's going to go out there and find him so he can save
- 28:47his mom and he brings his mom with him.
- 28:50And if they, there's a, like a little bit of a scheme to get outta the
- 28:52community and off he goes back into the wild by his lonesome with his mom.
- 28:58And that's where we get pretty much the second half of the movie.
- 29:01Jon: Yep.
- 29:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 29:03And they also meet.
- 29:05A Swedish NATO soldier named Eric Suki.
- 29:09'cause during this time patrol, they crash land and they meet the alpha
- 29:15and the alpha tears them apart.
- 29:18they think they're safe.
- 29:20They're going through this whole thing, shit hits, array.
- 29:22Rage's come and left and right, lock themselves alone in the sewer.
- 29:28a smart move.
- 29:29Alpha found a way in, tears him apart.
- 29:32You see him rip the guy's basically skull from his body.
- 29:37Spinal cord attached and good old Eric just runs away.
- 29:41I really thought that was Jimmy in the beginning when I saw him.
- 29:45And then I was like on uh
- 29:47Jon: I would, yeah, I mean, I spent the whole movie waiting for Jimmy that was.
- 29:52Just one in a string of people.
- 29:54I was sure was gonna be Jimmy,
- 29:57Ryan: yep.
- 29:58It was just the blonde hair.
- 30:00Jon: they,
- 30:00Ryan: looking for the cross.
- 30:01Jon: They established the pulling the spinal cord out by the head as the alpha
- 30:08Ryan: Yeah.
- 30:10Kearns: Which is totally stolen from another franchise we're all well aware of.
- 30:15Ryan: Predator.
- 30:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:18Which it's a visceral thing to rip somebody's head and spine out for sure.
- 30:25Ryan: the Predator Chirps, definitely copyright infringement right there.
- 30:28Kearns: I mean, yeah, they, they took some liberties with a few things, but
- 30:35that one was like, okay, that's fine.
- 30:37so Spike, Eric and Mom are traveling.
- 30:40A lot of comic reliefs going on during this part.
- 30:42Eric's kind of a goofball.
- 30:44Jon: Yeah.
- 30:44He,
- 30:45Ryan: Yep.
- 30:45Jon: he saves them after they're trapped in a gas station and.
- 30:49You know, they sort of travel together for a while and he's,
- 30:52yeah, he's some comic relief.
- 30:53A little bit of like, this is what the rest of the world is like, spike, like is
- 30:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:00And then he establishes, I'm never getting off the island because
- 31:03this is the quarantine zone.
- 31:04What you've set foot on this godforsaken island, you're stuck forever.
- 31:08Jon: Yep.
- 31:08Kearns: So he's traveling, trying to live and they go together, towards
- 31:12this doctor and they um, chance upon one of these groups of infected
- 31:19who've got a pregnant infected.
- 31:21And like I said,
- 31:22Ryan: Yes.
- 31:23Kearns: know my opinion on all this stuff.
- 31:25Like this is the direction they went in and that's great and everything.
- 31:27But this is another moment where I was like, nah, because it's just
- 31:32not 28 days later, it's just not.
- 31:35But whatever they've evolved, it's 28 years later.
- 31:37I get it.
- 31:38So she's Prego and she's in a train, uh, later on trying to give birth
- 31:42to this baby and dementia mom.
- 31:48Midwives her way up and does this and spirit fingers her and helps her
- 31:54deliver the baby, which is super.
- 31:58Ryan: It shows that they have a little humanity still left in them because
- 32:03she grabs the hand, she's delicate, she sees she's helping her, and then
- 32:07once that baby pops out, game over.
- 32:11Kearns: Yeah,
- 32:12Ryan: after Isla?
- 32:14Yep.
- 32:14She goes after Isla and it's like Eric puts a couple shots into
- 32:18her, but it alerts everyone as they're trying to figure out if
- 32:21this baby is infected or not.
- 32:24Which turns out, guess, so it doesn't really illustrate the point if, 'cause the
- 32:31alpha comes and he's looking for the baby.
- 32:33Was it the Alpha's baby?
- 32:35Jon: would
- 32:36Ryan: Was
- 32:36Kearns: would imagine.
- 32:37Jon: I
- 32:37Kearns: I would imagine.
- 32:39Jon: yeah.
- 32:39I would assume that
- 32:41Kearns: I.
- 32:41Jon: baby born to those infected tribes is the alpha's baby.
- 32:45Ryan: So to infect it, create a positive and
- 32:50Kearns: No, they just, uh, they went through the science of it.
- 32:53The placenta
- 32:54Jon: Yeah.
- 32:55Kearns: uh, known in, in moms to, to protect against babies like a baby
- 33:00born with HIV isn't, isn't given HIV in vitro. It's given usually during
- 33:05child labor, the birth and stuff.
- 33:08So,
- 33:09Jon: okay.
- 33:10How does the baby not wind up infected after birth like that?
- 33:14Mm-hmm.
- 33:35Mm-hmm.
- 33:35Kearns: Because if it's just, if it gets in your mouth or
- 33:37your eye and you're infected.
- 33:39That baby's infected the end.
- 33:41Ryan: Yes,
- 33:42Kearns: So,
- 33:43Ryan: a little demon baby running around.
- 33:45Okay.
- 33:45Kearns: so they have a, they have a baby and they're, it's not like
- 33:50they can't make normal babies in their society, but they're gonna be
- 33:52good people and protect the baby.
- 33:54So they take the baby they run, which causes the alpha,
- 33:58alpha dong to chase after them.
- 34:01And they're, they're all but fucked.
- 34:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:04Kearns: outta the woodwork?
- 34:06But the good old doctor actually forgot his name, but Ray Fines.
- 34:11Yeah.
- 34:11Ian Kelson.
- 34:13And he comes out with a dark gun, with some yummy, yummy morphine and brings
- 34:18down the alpha, not kills it, just puts it to sleep, which is another thing
- 34:22where it's like, come on, kill it.
- 34:24Ryan: he gave him a name, actually Samson.
- 34:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:27He calls him.
- 34:27Jon: Yeah.
- 34:28Ryan: calls him Samson.
- 34:29Jon: Kelson seems to commune with the infected to some level.
- 34:32Kearns: They're around him.
- 34:33Ryan: bring you.
- 34:34Be peaceful.
- 34:36Tries to be peaceful.
- 34:37Kearns: Yeah, he's a weirdo.
- 34:39So they, they join him
- 34:42Jon: I mean,
- 34:42Kearns: and they walk into his camp?
- 34:44Jon: as he shows up covered in iodine, you know, he is gonna be a little bit weird.
- 34:48Kearns: it's a solid, solid theory though.
- 34:50He is like, it does this, uh, the virus, it does not like iodine.
- 34:55So he covers his whole body and then he is got this like yellow
- 34:58kind of mad max look to him.
- 35:01Ryan: Yep.
- 35:02Kearns: Then he's stabbed, he's in his own little camp.
- 35:06Commune.
- 35:07Not, not commune.
- 35:08'cause there's no other community.
- 35:09It's just him and a thousand corpses basically.
- 35:11And he bleaches the bones from all the dead infected and, and uninfected alike.
- 35:16Jon: The bone
- 35:17Kearns: And he establishes the bone temple I suppose.
- 35:20It's a, visually cool thing.
- 35:23Jon: I, yeah, the visuals of that, that bone
- 35:25Ryan: Yeah, it's
- 35:26Jon: really awesome.
- 35:26Kearns: I wonder how long those bones would be bleached white
- 35:29like that out in the wild though.
- 35:30'cause they're o it's open air.
- 35:33I wonder.
- 35:33I wonder.
- 35:35Ryan: depending on the time of year.
- 35:36I'd say, uh, I'd say be fine.
- 35:39The summer start wearing in the late fall,
- 35:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:42'cause you see bleach bones like that in the desert climates, but not
- 35:46necessarily in the wet climate of England.
- 35:49So,
- 35:50Ryan: is just too wet.
- 35:51Jon: And then so you get the first act at the bone temple for, spike
- 35:55and Mom is bleaching Eric's skull and adding him to the temple.
- 36:01Kearns: which is interesting.
- 36:03Ryan: Put him on the bottom.
- 36:04Kearns: They show some, a little gore, a little uncomfortable gore with that too,
- 36:08as he's like peeling the remaining flesh off of it after he boiled it and stuff.
- 36:12Ryan: And the hair.
- 36:14He's like, it's normal.
- 36:15It's okay.
- 36:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:17Jesus Christ here, we know you've done this for, while they
- 36:20established that too, it's like many
- 36:22Ryan: 28 years.
- 36:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:24Kearns: he's been out there doing that.
- 36:25Jon: Yep.
- 36:26Kearns: So, um, he does diagnose Ila,
- 36:29Jon: Yep.
- 36:29Kearns: isn't great for Ila 'cause he diagnosed her with advanced
- 36:33breast cancer, which is spread and that's why she's going crazy
- 36:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:38Kearns: 'cause it's in her brain now.
- 36:39And, uh, basically whoop.
- 36:41Jon: that, yeah.
- 36:42I mean, that, to me, that was the most telegraphed part of that.
- 36:47The whole movie was that she had cancer and she was definitely going to die.
- 36:52Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 36:53Jon: I mean, almost from the minute you see her and you know, the, intensity
- 36:58of the headache she has, that's my,
- 37:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:01Jon: mind goes immediately.
- 37:03Kearns: She has to die or a spike will never leave, you
- 37:06know, the comfort of her shadow.
- 37:08Jon: Yeah.
- 37:08Kearns: So
- 37:09Ryan: It's
- 37:09Kearns: it's for the story to move for that kid, he's, it's gotta happen, but the
- 37:13way they do it is actually kind of neat.
- 37:15the doctor kind of recedes back after giving her the news.
- 37:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:19Kearns: aware of what's happening and then they kind of, they trick spike and
- 37:23just shoot him with one of the traks.
- 37:25And he's not, he doesn't pass out right away.
- 37:27He's just pacified.
- 37:29And the mother explains to him, the doctor explains to him that it's best to do
- 37:33it like this rather than live with all this pain that's coming down the pipe.
- 37:37And she's with it right now.
- 37:39So she'd rather die on those terms and that was cool.
- 37:42Ryan: It needs to happen.
- 37:43What ne did need to happen is him being emotionless as he put
- 37:48the skull on top of the temple.
- 37:51I mean, feel like as a screenwriter he should have had a little
- 37:55more emotion, little more tears.
- 37:57Instead of being like, look at the sunlight, mom, just just look at the sun.
- 38:01Like, I need more emotion.
- 38:04Jon: I would say two things about that.
- 38:07One, I, it, that part did, I would've thought that part would've
- 38:11been more emotional to watch, and it didn't hit me at all.
- 38:16Kearns: Not even a little.
- 38:16Jon: But I think that
- 38:19Ryan: Nope.
- 38:20Jon: because they're in a world where death is commonplace.
- 38:25You know, You could grieve for like a moment, but you kind
- 38:29of have to go on from there.
- 38:31Kearns: Yeah, you can't stall.
- 38:33Ryan: that.
- 38:34Kind of
- 38:34Kearns: true.
- 38:35Ryan: accepting it.
- 38:35Jon: Yeah.
- 38:36Yeah.
- 38:36I
- 38:36Ryan: Like,
- 38:37Jon: mean, Dr. Kelson makes a big point of repeatedly saying Memento Maori
- 38:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:44Jon: and then Memento a Morris.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:48Reme.
- 38:48Remember, we all die.
- 38:49Remember, we all love like it, you know, it's, that part works.
- 38:56I mean, you know, you want to, you would want to see a little emotion
- 38:59from Spike in that, in that scene, but it, it, that kind of works for me too.
- 39:05Kearns: It kind of hardens.
- 39:06It shows like the end of that arc too.
- 39:09He is like, he's ready for the journey.
- 39:11Yeah, exactly.
- 39:12Ryan: Yeah.
- 39:13Kearns: He just had his mother's, his mother was just, had her arms around him.
- 39:16He is got her skull in his hand 45 minutes later.
- 39:19It was wild concept.
- 39:20Jon: the other thing they sort of established early on
- 39:23is Spike is young for this.
- 39:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:26Jon: 12.
- 39:27Ryan: yep.
- 39:27Jon: they send him out at 14 or 15, so he's
- 39:30Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 39:31Jon: So he's, you know, it's, that's his grow up moment.
- 39:35Ryan: Yep.
- 39:38It's like a coming of age story in its own way in the world of 28, 28 days later,
- 39:43like, how do you mature in this world?
- 39:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:45Ryan: You know?
- 39:46Well, you're a kid till 1214, then shit hits the fan sometimes even sooner.
- 39:52Jon: listen, people who aren't living in a safe island, like Spike grew up,
- 39:57it's probably even younger than that.
- 39:59Kearns: Oh yeah, you gotta be ready to kill at a very young age.
- 40:03Get out there and go.
- 40:04And it's not like these things are easy to kill either.
- 40:06Jon: No.
- 40:06Kearns: They're incredibly difficult to kill.
- 40:09Ryan: the grubers are
- 40:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 40:11That's the thing about them though, is the ever presence creep.
- 40:14'cause they, a gruber almost takes out spike
- 40:18Ryan: Yeah.
- 40:18Kearns: the mother.
- 40:19That's a cool scene too, where they show the mother saved his
- 40:21life, but they didn't, uh, they, she didn't remember it afterward.
- 40:25Ryan: mm-hmm.
- 40:26Kearns: That's neat.
- 40:28Jon: Yeah.
- 40:29Kearns: Before she died, everybody, just so you know, we, we'd skip over
- 40:32a couple little things here and there
- 40:34Ryan: Well, I thought that was the same gruber from earlier in
- 40:37the film that they kept alive.
- 40:39He's like, go on.
- 40:41That's what I believe.
- 40:42I believe that's the same gruber from earlier when Aaron Taylor
- 40:46Johnson's like, move along.
- 40:49like, he's like, payback.
- 40:51I'm gonna take a chomp out of this kid.
- 40:52I'm just gonna take a little, little snack.
- 40:54Kearns: could be.
- 40:55Ryan: that scene was cool 'cause it, it's unexpected 'cause you think she's
- 40:58down and out and then she pops up.
- 41:01She had a V she had a vielle moment.
- 41:03If, if no one's ever seen Killing Eve highly recommend it.
- 41:07She stars in it, Jody Comer.
- 41:09But that was her, her moment of just knocking the, the rager the fuck out.
- 41:15And it was good.
- 41:16It worked out.
- 41:18Jon: Yeah, that was a good scene.
- 41:21They
- 41:22Kearns: Um,
- 41:22Jon: had a thing in filming this for the extreme overhead shots.
- 41:28Kearns: yeah, they like to do that perspective thing,
- 41:32which kind of gives you the whole, like looking into an, an farm
- 41:34vibe 'cause they're stuck in this, on this in this world sort of.
- 41:39Um,
- 41:40Ryan: that.
- 41:41Kearns: yeah, it's an interesting way to go about it.
- 41:43It's, it's camera perspectives are huge.
- 41:45another one of their artistic license takings that they did in this movie
- 41:52is that with the camera, what they decided to do during certain scenes,
- 41:57the extreme closeups on the infected at times, not like in the other movies,
- 42:01uh, where it was sort of fixed camera
- 42:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:04Kearns: are running by the fixed camera.
- 42:05This was, you know, kind of felt like watching predators for a
- 42:08little while or prey rather prey.
- 42:11a lot of similarities there in that too.
- 42:15Like I said, it's not a bad thing, it's just different than the, if
- 42:19you're going in expecting 28 days or 28 weeks, you're not getting those things
- 42:23Jon: No.
- 42:24Kearns: you're getting.
- 42:25And then the direction it looks like it's going in at the very end, which
- 42:28we're right about to get into, is another huge curve ball, which is way different.
- 42:31It feels more like a clockwork orange
- 42:35Ryan: Mm Ooh.
- 42:36That's a good comparison actually.
- 42:39comparison.
- 42:40Kearns: Jimmy.
- 42:40Absolutely.
- 42:41As they behave the same way.
- 42:42It's, it's gotta be a non to clockwork orange, the blonde hair,
- 42:47the ultra blonde hair and everything.
- 42:49But anyway, um, so he has to leave the doctor, the bone temple
- 42:54because s Samson found them
- 42:56Jon: Yeah.
- 42:56Kearns: and he takes Isla and,
- 42:58Ryan: yep.
- 42:58Kearns: he brings her back to the community, but he doesn't
- 43:01return to the community.
- 43:02He decides to not go back.
- 43:04He leaves and you get the 28 days later thing after his dad like
- 43:08tries to run after him or can't, like you can get him whatever.
- 43:11So you get the 28 days later thing and then you get to him cooking a fish
- 43:15Jon: Yeah, and he, you know, he's cooking a fish and the infected show up,
- 43:20Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:21Jon: he dispatches a couple.
- 43:22You can see in his 28 days he's developed more confidence being out in that world,
- 43:31Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:31Jon: panicked.
- 43:32He's, you know, calm, also outnumbered and takes off running.
- 43:38Ryan: he's war torn.
- 43:39I feel like, I feel like the 28 days, like he's mentally changed.
- 43:45Spike has changed since the, the beginning of the film.
- 43:48We know, like Spike as a kid, he's got the toys, he's having fun, and then initially
- 43:55slowly like accepts the life that's there.
- 43:58Jon: Yeah.
- 43:59Ryan: And it's like, it's his own journey, which he's not in the second one.
- 44:04So I feel like the third one's gonna converge everything all
- 44:07together, if that makes sense.
- 44:10Something like, I haven't seen Halloween ends, but the whole idea of it ending
- 44:15and kind of wrapping everything up,
- 44:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:17Ryan: that they're just gonna wrap all the stories together
- 44:21Jon: Well.
- 44:21Kearns: establish this for the listener.
- 44:23Ryan, what are you talking about?
- 44:25How many movies are there gonna be?
- 44:26Is this not the third, the end of the franchise?
- 44:29Ryan: no, there's gonna be two more.
- 44:31They're gonna come out with the bone temple in the, uh, in January, which was,
- 44:35uh, shot back to back with 28 years later.
- 44:38Uh, different director, but Alex Garland did write the sequel,
- 44:41Jon: Yeah.
- 44:41Ryan: so it
- 44:42Kearns: then there's a movie after that.
- 44:44Ryan: Yep.
- 44:44Which will be directed by Danny Boyle
- 44:46Kearns: So if you guys were paying attention, he said that
- 44:49Carrot Spike Spike's character is not going to be in the next 28
- 44:54years later, movie Bone Temple,
- 44:56Jon: Hmm.
- 44:56Kearns: he'll be in the one after that.
- 44:58Jon: Which
- 44:58Kearns: So this is establishing a new trilogy?
- 45:00Jon: of implies to me bone temple, the 28 years later Bone Temple chapter is
- 45:08going to be sort of concurrent with the events in this 28 years later
- 45:14Kearns: It might be,
- 45:15Jon: they, they leave
- 45:16Ryan: it could.
- 45:17Jon: where that story has to pick up with Spike somehow.
- 45:22Kearns: You can't just move on.
- 45:24You could do a time forward kind of thing, a flash forward and have
- 45:27Spike played by an older actor.
- 45:29Maybe that's like, he's not in the cast, the kid, but,
- 45:32Ryan: Let's see
- 45:33Kearns: um, that could possibly be it.
- 45:34But yeah, there's gonna have to be something they probably, you wanna
- 45:37establish what happened with Jimmy do
- 45:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:39Kearns: because, so at the end of the movie, when Jimmy's,
- 45:43Jimmy's characters all come out,
- 45:45Jon: Yeah.
- 45:46Kearns: is, yeah, that's what we mean now.
- 45:48Ryan: Temple.
- 45:48Kearns: That's what we mean is that they're probably gonna flush out his story
- 45:51Jon: Because other,
- 45:52Kearns: during
- 45:53Jon: doesn't, he that's 28 years doesn't explain how he gets
- 45:58to where he is without that.
- 46:00Because
- 46:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:02Ryan: Yeah.
- 46:02Jon: he's clearly the end of this movie, Jimmy has become some kind of cult leader.
- 46:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:10A martial artist's, uh, tracksuit, wearing cult.
- 46:15Jon: I don't know if you guys noticed this
- 46:16Kearns: Let's finish, let's finish the movie.
- 46:18Hold on.
- 46:18Before we do that.
- 46:20So guys, when Spike is outnumbered, he runs to a, a roadblock and
- 46:25gets up to these rocks and there's, he's basically cooked.
- 46:29He might have been able to get out of it, but he's basically cooked.
- 46:31But then Jimmy is sitting there crouched at the top and he kind of tells him
- 46:35holding this long, like pole vaulting rod, and he tells him, um, that, you know,
- 46:40they're more coming, blah, blah, blah.
- 46:41Why don't you let my friends take care of this?
- 46:43And Spike gives this blessing and then these Jimmy acolytes do these ninja
- 46:47moves jump down and they hilariously kill the infected that have run
- 46:51up on them in these weird ways.
- 46:53It's pretty fun to watch and it's a, it's a very campy, weird ends to
- 46:58this movie and it doesn't fit the tone very well, and it's definitely
- 47:02feels like the Clockwork Orange.
- 47:03Um, and it's very, like I said, it makes it, it just shows that they made some
- 47:09decisions and they just went with them.
- 47:11I don't even know if they, if they received negative feedback,
- 47:15if that would've mattered.
- 47:16Jon: mm-hmm.
- 47:16Kearns: They just decided to go in this direction.
- 47:18And then John was just saying post credits now or
- 47:21Jon: So,
- 47:21Kearns: after?
- 47:22Jon: if you watch the credits, it, that's where you really, I mean,
- 47:27pretty clear he's leading a cult.
- 47:28'cause they're all in blonde wigs.
- 47:30But you see the names all roll by and they're all Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy,
- 47:34and, and then there's a woman who's jamina, like they're all Jimmy's.
- 47:38Ryan: I gotta take a look
- 47:39Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 47:39And then we, we jumped past the, um, nod at the beginning where they've
- 47:42got the guy hung upside down and they've carved Jimmy into his body
- 47:46and then let him become infected.
- 47:49Uh, that was his punishment, I suppose.
- 47:52So the Jimmys are out there then?
- 47:54Ryan: do you think spike's got an idea or No.
- 47:58Kearns: Well, I mean, he might be able to put that together.
- 48:00He did read it on the corpse, on the, oh, the infected guy was on.
- 48:05Jon: think at some point he almost has to come to that conclusion.
- 48:09Maybe
- 48:09Ryan: Okay.
- 48:10Jon: Imminently, but like that, feels like it's something that's going to come back.
- 48:15Ryan: He like joins them,
- 48:18Kearns: for sure.
- 48:19So,
- 48:20Ryan: their clutches in the third film.
- 48:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:22Kearns: so yeah, that's the entirety of 28 years later.
- 48:25Uh, gentlemen, what's your take?
- 48:27Warm, cold, hot.
- 48:30What do you think?
- 48:31Ryan: I'm warm.
- 48:32I like a lot of the stuff.
- 48:34But the thing is, is I, I can't be a fan of movies that have an open-ended,
- 48:41like it's open-ended just because like, let's say they didn't get that
- 48:45movie Green Lit, the, the sequel.
- 48:48Kearns: Well, they already filmed it though.
- 48:49We filmed them back to back.
- 48:51Ryan: but Hypothe, if they didn't Right.
- 48:53Kearns: Well, but we.
- 48:54Ryan: an open-ended, that's that's how, that's how I see it.
- 48:58I'm like,
- 48:58Kearns: That doesn't really apply to this one though, man.
- 49:00I'm like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna kind of shout it out.
- 49:03It doesn't really apply to this.
- 49:04They filmed 'em at the same time.
- 49:06So the open-ended ending thing, like hating that in another movie.
- 49:09I get that.
- 49:10Right.
- 49:10But this one, they filmed them.
- 49:12They knew they were gonna have the other movie.
- 49:14Jon: sure I get that gripe.
- 49:15I mean, empire Strikes Back is pretty open-ended.
- 49:20I mean, you know, there's a third one
- 49:21Ryan: no.
- 49:22Jon: pretty open-ended.
- 49:25Kearns: Yeah, I guess you're right.
- 49:27Ryan: I'm taking my, I'm taking it back.
- 49:28I'm taking my ball back.
- 49:31Taking it back.
- 49:32I'm still warm on
- 49:33Kearns: There's plenty of other reasons to be warm on it though.
- 49:36Like we're not, you're not gonna shit on that.
- 49:38Jon: I
- 49:38Kearns: That's my take too.
- 49:39I'm average warm.
- 49:40Jon: would say I'm
- 49:41Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:42Jon: I
- 49:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:43I.
- 49:44Jon: I wanna watch it again
- 49:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:46Jon: and sort of digest a second viewing and see.
- 49:51Ryan: I do wish Dr. Kelson was in it more like, I
- 49:55Kearns: I get why that's not a thing too though.
- 49:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:59And that that'll be big in the next movie.
- 50:01'cause like John's prediction seems like it's pretty likely that they're
- 50:04gonna do his story and Jimmy's story kind of rolling through the next movie.
- 50:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:10I, I mean, the thing with Kel though is like, I don't know how much I want
- 50:14to know, like, how does he get there?
- 50:16That's like, and you know, watch him constructing, but I kind
- 50:20of like him just being a sort of weird, mysterious character.
- 50:25Ryan: Mysterious Herman in the woods.
- 50:27Jon: Yeah.
- 50:28Kearns: Leash, leashing bones and being weird.
- 50:29Jon: Yeah.
- 50:30Like, I don't need, I don't want to know his story.
- 50:33Ryan: That's
- 50:33Kearns: That's fair.
- 50:34That's fair.
- 50:36The way the wise sage kind of character vibe.
- 50:38Yeah.
- 50:39Jon: Yeah.
- 50:39Ryan: he's very ambiguous.
- 50:41Kearns: He doesn't seem evil either.
- 50:42I was expecting him to be evil.
- 50:43He doesn't appear.
- 50:44Jon: that was the twist I was waiting for was Dr. Kelson is a good dude.
- 50:50Kearns: He seems like a very good dude.
- 50:52Jon: Yeah.
- 50:52He's
- 50:53Kearns: Uh,
- 50:53Jon: doing his vision of the Lord's work.
- 50:57I think, you know, he's sort of returning some sort of balance in his own weird way.
- 51:03Ryan: I
- 51:03Kearns: and
- 51:04Ryan: there's a lot of religious undertones, you can
- 51:08say, like in the beginning.
- 51:10And Dr. Kelson and just, I guess, well,
- 51:16Kearns: they don't harp on him too.
- 51:17That is good.
- 51:18Ryan: No, no, not too
- 51:19Kearns: Which is good.
- 51:19They make a bit of a mockery of it actually.
- 51:22And then they sort of just make that part of the film's fabric.
- 51:25it's one of the things that movie does, I think that hits actually is
- 51:28how they handle the religious aspect.
- 51:30Ryan: oh, Jimmy's
- 51:31Kearns: Stay connected to a cult.
- 51:33Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:34Kearns: that's it.
- 51:35Ryan: like Teletubbies.
- 51:36Kearns: Not to say that, uh, for the religious listeners out there, we're
- 51:39not meaning to, just to disrespect you, but there are parallels if you,
- 51:42uh, you know, Jonestown and things like that is what we've been after.
- 51:45Jon: Well,
- 51:46Ryan: yes.
- 51:46Kearns: big JC
- 51:47Jon: I, again, from the credits, one of his acolytes is Jimmy Jones.
- 51:54Kearns: Jimmy Jones.
- 51:56That's nice.
- 51:57I didn't even know that.
- 51:58That's a good nod.
- 51:59So yeah, he's definitely a cult leader.
- 52:01Jon: Yeah.
- 52:02Kearns: If you haven't done, um, if you haven't looked into
- 52:05Jonestown, there's a million podcasts on it and stuff like that.
- 52:08It's a wild ride.
- 52:09And there was a congressman who was actually murdered by this cult,
- 52:14Ryan: Yep.
- 52:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:14Kearns: just crazy shit that happened.
- 52:17Jon: And
- 52:17Kearns: That was the Kool-Aid
- 52:18Jon: yeah.
- 52:19Flavor aid.
- 52:20Kearns: labor aid.
- 52:21Jon: didn't even give him the real stuff.
- 52:23They got the
- 52:24Kearns: I think they were in South Africa, right.
- 52:26Jon: Guyana,
- 52:27Kearns: They were in Guyana.
- 52:28They had set up the Southern South America, not in Africa.
- 52:32This is crazy.
- 52:33so the, yeah, that's the, the movie.
- 52:35I think some things hit and some things missed.
- 52:37I think that you're going to get people who focus on both of those things.
- 52:40You're gonna get people who really like this movie.
- 52:42There's gonna be kids who've never experienced anything like this movie.
- 52:45Jon: Yeah.
- 52:46Kearns: And then you're gonna get, you're gonna get people who hate this movie.
- 52:49Um, and then you're gonna get guys like us who take the
- 52:51good with the bad and sort of,
- 52:53Jon: Yeah.
- 52:53Kearns: sort of appreciate it for what it is, which was a movie that tried.
- 52:57And that's what I like about it the most.
- 52:59We tried something new
- 53:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:01Kearns: not, that's not always gonna work.
- 53:03Jon: you know, reserve some judgment to see where it goes because they, you know,
- 53:09it's clearly setting up something more.
- 53:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:11This is a six hour story.
- 53:13We've only seen two hours out.
- 53:15Ryan: Yep.
- 53:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:17Yeah, that's, um, that's 28 years later.
- 53:19Guys.
- 53:19I hope you watched it.
- 53:20Enjoyed it.
- 53:21Um,
- 53:22Ryan: Yep.
- 53:22Kearns: love to hear your take on it.
- 53:24Would love to hear if you disagree with us, especially me and I know
- 53:28actually especially Ryan and, uh,
- 53:31Ryan: Open-ended
- 53:32Kearns: on his open-ended stuff.
- 53:34But no, uh,
- 53:35Ryan: is
- 53:35Kearns: we're gonna be putting out more content and hopefully getting a
- 53:38little bit more feedback from you guys.
- 53:39'cause I'm, we're starting to get a little hungry for your takes on things
- 53:42and just, uh, let us know what you think about the giant dong and if
- 53:46you would've let your kids watch it dangle around throughout the movie.
- 53:49Ryan: Or would you leave 45 minutes to an hour in watching all those other mini Dons
- 53:55Kearns: 28 minutes.
- 53:57Jon: That, that was the part that almost made me laugh out loud
- 54:01Kearns: Oh, I did laugh.
- 54:02I mocked them.
- 54:03Ryan: Yeah, I did.
- 54:03Jon: you And I think he, I think he was well aware that
- 54:06people were laughing at him.
- 54:08Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:09Jon: did.
- 54:09He got to the exit and you know, did this sort of look around thing.
- 54:13Ryan: Yeah.
- 54:15Jon: Uh,
- 54:15Kearns: It's like with the young girl, the one kid was a little older,
- 54:18but then his other daughter was very young, not very, not like stupid, but
- 54:22she was like in the 12-year-old range.
- 54:25She didn't belong in that theater.
- 54:27Jon: she,
- 54:28Ryan: It's like,
- 54:29Jon: she didn't belong in that theater because it, instead
- 54:31of rated our movie that
- 54:33Ryan: yeah,
- 54:33Jon: if you've seen, if you've seen the first two, forgetting the dongs,
- 54:40Kearns: Yeah,
- 54:41Jon: you
- 54:41Ryan: Yeah.
- 54:41Jon: it's not gonna, you know, it's not, probably not gonna be
- 54:44appropriate for your 12-year-old.
- 54:47Kearns: yeah,
- 54:48Jon: And if it's, and if it's the, the sexuality part of it that puts
- 54:52you over, I'm a little worried.
- 54:53Kearns: yeah.
- 54:54Ryan: Yeah.
- 54:54Kearns: Fair,
- 54:55Ryan: Yeah,
- 54:56Kearns: Well that's very American, that it's the violence, anything is
- 54:59anything goes, but as soon as you see it's hit, that's when we're done.
- 55:02That's when we draw the line.
- 55:04We're gonna do our top fives, let's see what I, you guys have to come up with
- 55:08something interesting for this one.
- 55:09So, Ryan, what's your top five list?
- 55:11Ryan: This was hard.
- 55:12So I took a, I took a practice.
- 55:15Yeah, it was, it was limping some parts but hard in others.
- 55:19Um,
- 55:19Jon: dong.
- 55:22Ryan: just swinging in the air, but, um.
- 55:25I borrowed something from John's playbook and I went with top
- 55:28my top five Ray fine movies
- 55:31Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 55:31Ryan: seen.
- 55:32And, um, to start it off, I'm gonna start off with, uh, Skyfall,
- 55:37the third Daniel Craig Bond film.
- 55:39Sam Mendes directed brought Bond back to like, I guess the foreground
- 55:43of that classic style, the gadgets.
- 55:46'cause they were trying to go the born identity with him and it worked for
- 55:50the first movie, failed for the second, and they did a good job in the third.
- 55:54And he, I like him as m brought
- 55:57Kearns: that Casino Royale is the second one, or was that the fourth one?
- 56:01Ryan: it's Casino Royale, quantum Solas, Skyfall Specter, and No Time to Die.
- 56:07That's the, uh, Daniel Craig alternate universe.
- 56:10Kearns: okay.
- 56:10Ryan: but Skyfall brings it back and it introduces one of my favorite
- 56:14groups, uh, back into the fold.
- 56:16Kind of hints at it is Specter.
- 56:19I'm a big Bond fan.
- 56:20So Specter in the Bond films was very prominent, especially
- 56:23the Sean Connery days.
- 56:25And Donald Pleasant as Ernest Blofeld, sorry, Christophe Waltz.
- 56:31We can't beat that man.
- 56:32But this leads me into another Ray Fines movie.
- 56:35We were talking about it, and yes, I, we agree that man, Hunter's better,
- 56:39but I have to mention Red Dragon,
- 56:41Kearns: My dragon's good.
- 56:42Ryan: role.
- 56:43Um, you know, he shines in it.
- 56:46And you got Anthony Hopkins, you got Edward Norton, Harvey
- 56:50Kittel, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
- 56:53mean, he's a, that's another scene stealer, but.
- 56:57Ray Fines is just, he's awesome, awesome.
- 57:01The movie.
- 57:01And he does such a good job as,
- 57:04Kearns: He carries.
- 57:06Ryan: Ide, that's his
- 57:07Kearns: He
- 57:07Ryan: we
- 57:07Kearns: carries the dread, and that felt very well
- 57:11Ryan: he does, he does.
- 57:12I mean, I'll say Tom Dunhan.
- 57:14It's scary, but presence of Ray Fines lurking and just huge, the back
- 57:22piece, they did a good job with it.
- 57:24And you can just feel that menacing that he's around.
- 57:29Same thing in this other movie.
- 57:31I like, I like this movie a lot.
- 57:32It's a black comedy.
- 57:34Um, stars Colin Farrell as well, and one of our favorites, Brendan Gleason,
- 57:40Kearns: Uhhuh.
- 57:40Ryan: Bru.
- 57:41you guys seen in Bru
- 57:43Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 57:43Ryan: the two Hitmen?
- 57:44And, uh, it's so dark and I, I mean we're, I don't wanna even wanna spoil it because
- 57:50it starts off as to why they're there.
- 57:53Um.
- 57:54Oh, I'll spoil it.
- 57:55Fuck it.
- 57:56Colin Ferrell accidentally shoots a kid and he's taken with his partner, Brendan
- 58:01Gleason, to Bruce to vacation, to which Colin Ferrell thinks he's kind of like
- 58:07getting away with it while Ray finds his, like telling Brendan Gleason's
- 58:12character to kill him and to the point where Ray fines has to go after him.
- 58:16It's a good film.
- 58:17It's funny, very dark, but it's, it does have heart.
- 58:22It does.
- 58:23Unlike this movie, the Menu, that's my number two.
- 58:27There is no heart in this movie.
- 58:29Uh, it's so good.
- 58:31I was waiting for it on HBO Max.
- 58:33I, I waited and it's just, he is a menace in that movie.
- 58:38Just the, the scene.
- 58:39You went to college, did you have any student loans?
- 58:43No.
- 58:44Then you're dying Today it's, it's okay.
- 58:48And what he does to Nicholas Holt, he destroys him to the point where.
- 58:53It is just a movie you gotta see, but
- 58:55Kearns: Yeah,
- 58:56Ryan: guys guess my
- 58:57Kearns: well, it's a,
- 58:58Ryan: Oh, sorry.
- 58:59Kearns: the menu, um, leans on the chef trope, the mean chef trope as well, like
- 59:04the drill sergeant chef trope, and it
- 59:06Jon: Yeah.
- 59:06Kearns: goes awol with it.
- 59:08It's great.
- 59:09It's a good movie.
- 59:09Ryan: It, it reminded me of a darker version of The Bear, and
- 59:13if you've seen The Bear, um, I'm forgetting the guy's name.
- 59:16He was on, he hosted the soup on entertainment.
- 59:20Um, he's like an
- 59:22Kearns: Oh yeah, he was in it for like a second.
- 59:23Uh, the guy from community, what's his name?
- 59:26Jon: Oh, um, Joel Mikhail,
- 59:29Kearns: yeah.
- 59:29Joel McHale, he does, he's a pretty good actor.
- 59:31Joel Mcha.
- 59:32Ryan: oh, he is.
- 59:33I, I love him.
- 59:34He doesn't do a lot now, but the thing is, is, um, have you seen the third season?
- 59:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:41Ryan: I, I, uh, I won't say anything but Joel Macchas, as much as he's not in
- 59:45there a lot, his character arc is pretty intriguing how they him up and then in
- 59:52the third season, kind of like, settle it.
- 59:55it's done very well.
- 59:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:57Ryan: I excited for the fourth season, but I was gonna say, do you guys
- 1:00:00have a guess of what my first film is
- 1:00:03Kearns: First Ray Fines on Fried
- 1:00:06Ryan: It's a, it's a classic.
- 1:00:10Kearns: Fern Gully.
- 1:00:11Ryan: gotta, I wish
- 1:00:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:14I don't think people met,
- 1:00:15Ryan: List.
- 1:00:17Kearns: uh, the Feel Good movie.
- 1:00:18I do recall.
- 1:00:19Yeah.
- 1:00:19I was gonna say, oh, Schindler's List.
- 1:00:23Ryan: I watched it later on in life.
- 1:00:25Um, it during Christmas, like
- 1:00:28Kearns: Oh my God.
- 1:00:29Brian,
- 1:00:30Ryan: I,
- 1:00:31Kearns: what the fuck?
- 1:00:32Ryan: Christmas.
- 1:00:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:00:34You know what I, you know what I like On my Christmas, my Uel tide
- 1:00:38spirit relies on death of Jews.
- 1:00:42Ryan: I, Jada was working.
- 1:00:44I was like, I need to watch this film.
- 1:00:46Everyone talks about it and it's, it's a, it's an excellent film the black and white
- 1:00:53stands out, the Red Coat, but Ray Finds is just a scumbag and he does it so well.
- 1:01:00And it's, it's, it's an actual person and it just shows how evil,
- 1:01:05like how evil these fuckers were.
- 1:01:08And it shows Liam Neeson as this man who's, he's trying to make
- 1:01:13money in the beginning off of it.
- 1:01:15And then it's like, it shows he has a heart and it's especially the ending.
- 1:01:19It's just, I'm thinking about it and I'm just like, uh, and
- 1:01:22Kearns: No, that's a good metric.
- 1:01:23Ryan: that, but then right after that you have to watch Dark Man, 'cause that
- 1:01:27kind of cheers you up after Schindler's
- 1:01:29Kearns: I was gonna say, is that like a sequel
- 1:01:33Ryan: It's.
- 1:01:34Jon: Oh, I thought, I thought you just went to the boy in the striped
- 1:01:37pajamas and then that Roberto
- 1:01:39Kearns: Dark?
- 1:01:39Ryan: Oh,
- 1:01:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:01:40Jon: life
- 1:01:40Kearns: I thought Dark Man was like some, I. Esoteric slavery movie
- 1:01:44that he was getting into that he was gonna follow UPS list with.
- 1:01:49Jon: is your is your Christmas Day movie watch list, just all Holocaust movies.
- 1:01:56Ryan: no,
- 1:01:56Kearns: makes him happy to be Christian.
- 1:01:58That's how he does it.
- 1:02:00Ryan: listen, the, the best film I've watched on Christmas was, actually,
- 1:02:05I'll shout it out, was with my father-in-law, a few Christmases back.
- 1:02:08We watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
- 1:02:10Kearns: Um,
- 1:02:11Ryan: first time,
- 1:02:12Kearns: good deal.
- 1:02:13Ryan: that was actually a really, it's one of my favorite Christmas moments
- 1:02:16besides watching Tropic Thunder.
- 1:02:18I watched Tropic Thunder on Christmas
- 1:02:20Kearns: That's a cute, you know, we're a big family.
- 1:02:22Um, we used to be big on going to the movies Christmas Day and stuff.
- 1:02:26We might start doing that again as well.
- 1:02:28'cause it's, it is fun to do that.
- 1:02:29But, all right, John, I'm, I've been dying to hear about this top five list.
- 1:02:33You're so proud of it.
- 1:02:36You're so damn proud of it.
- 1:02:37What, what did you do?
- 1:02:38It's, is it gonna be.
- 1:02:39Ryan: like it's,
- 1:02:40Jon: What do you
- 1:02:41Ryan: it's Don involved.
- 1:02:42Kearns: It's gonna be top five dicks.
- 1:02:44Jon: It is more Dong movies
- 1:02:50and we'll,
- 1:02:51Kearns: so,
- 1:02:51Jon: off at number five with the only non horror movie on the list and also the
- 1:02:56only non-Human Dong movie on the list.
- 1:02:59It is Sasquatch Sunset,
- 1:03:03Kearns: oh yeah.
- 1:03:04Okay, so we're talking Harry Don.
- 1:03:08Jon: you're talking Bigfoot Dong, but you're talking like this is, it's one of
- 1:03:13the most bizarre movies you'll ever watch.
- 1:03:16It is at times funny, poignant, absurd.
- 1:03:20it's a year in the life of a Sasquatch family.
- 1:03:23And everything that that entails.
- 1:03:26Love, life, birth, death.
- 1:03:28It's like just, it's somehow strangely powerful and meaningful without a
- 1:03:33single line of dialogue, without a humans, without any of that.
- 1:03:38It's like, and dongs, lots and
- 1:03:41Kearns: Yeah, lots of dawn.
- 1:03:44All right, well that's very in line with 28 years later.
- 1:03:47'cause I would classify that as a sas.
- 1:03:48Watch Dawn
- 1:03:50Jon: Um,
- 1:03:51Ryan: Dog.
- 1:03:52Jon: the next two have a director in common.
- 1:03:55We're gonna go with Frank Hen Lauder at number four is Bad Biology
- 1:04:04Kearns: Bad Biology.
- 1:04:06Jon: So,
- 1:04:07Ryan: I've heard rums.
- 1:04:08Jon: boy, it's a
- 1:04:10Ryan: I've heard rums.
- 1:04:10Jon: It's
- 1:04:11Kearns: I bet you heard rumbling.
- 1:04:12Jon: two sexually unique people stumble through unfulfilling sexual
- 1:04:16relationships until they cross paths.
- 1:04:20She's an insatiable.
- 1:04:22And he has a drug addicted, sentient detachable dong.
- 1:04:28Ryan: Nice.
- 1:04:30Played by Andrew.
- 1:04:32Jon: No.
- 1:04:32Played, played by
- 1:04:34Ryan: No, I know.
- 1:04:35Jon: Played by a dong.
- 1:04:38Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:40It, um, it, it embarks on its own reign of terror.
- 1:04:46Kearns: That sounds like a good choice of words.
- 1:04:49Little golden shower reference too.
- 1:04:51Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:52I didn't even
- 1:04:52Kearns: R Kelly did the music score.
- 1:04:57Jon: So my number three is also Frank Hen Lauder.
- 1:05:01basket case.
- 1:05:03Kearns: Oh, there's a dick in basket case.
- 1:05:06Ryan: was there a dog?
- 1:05:07Kearns: it a, is it a basket case, Dick?
- 1:05:09Jon: Dwayne running through the streets of New York with his doner
- 1:05:12Kearns: Oh, let's,
- 1:05:15Ryan: I don't remember that scene.
- 1:05:16I saw the sci-fi version.
- 1:05:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:19Dwayne and his formerly conjoined, murderous brother Bilal head to
- 1:05:24New York City to seek some revenge against the doctors who separated
- 1:05:29them and left Bilal to die.
- 1:05:32Bilal was not supposed to live,
- 1:05:34Kearns: yeah, he was supposed to die.
- 1:05:36Jon: eh,
- 1:05:37Kearns: case that uh, actually, I don't know.
- 1:05:39I watched it when I was very young.
- 1:05:40As I've said many times on this podcast, that was one of the movies when I
- 1:05:43snuck into my mom's room 'cause I was scared from another horror movie.
- 1:05:46Basket case was on.
- 1:05:47We would just leave HBO on at night.
- 1:05:49I would just watch those movies.
- 1:05:51Basket case was a freaky one.
- 1:05:52Jon: love basket case
- 1:05:53Ryan: it was,
- 1:05:55Kearns: He's pervy too.
- 1:05:56That little, little conjoined twin
- 1:05:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:01Bilal is a menace.
- 1:06:04Kearns: Yes, he is.
- 1:06:04That's part of what makes the movies fun.

- 1:06:08Jon: Yep.
- 1:06:10Um,
- 1:06:10Kearns: Number two.
- 1:06:11Jon: is, I guess technically not horror.

- 1:06:18Because number two is the greasy strangler.
- 1:06:21Kearns: Okay.
- 1:06:22Ryan: Okay.
- 1:06:23Kearns: That makes me feel a little bit better about you
- 1:06:24using the damn adjective greasy.
- 1:06:29Ugh.
- 1:06:29Ryan: Greasy.
- 1:06:30Jon: Have you guys seen greasy strangler?
- 1:06:33Kearns: No.

- 1:06:34Kearns: No, I have not seen it.
- 1:06:36Look at you.
- 1:06:36How do you seem surprised by this?
- 1:06:38Jon: my God.
- 1:06:40Ryan: I think he's more surprised.
- 1:06:41I haven't seen it.
- 1:06:42I haven't even heard of it.
- 1:06:43Jon: Oh my
- 1:06:44Ryan: Just,
- 1:06:46Jon: Okay,
- 1:06:48Ryan: like, I don't know where I'm turning with it.
- 1:06:50Jon: cannot tell you bullshit artists too much except bullshit
- 1:06:53artists is a recurring line.
- 1:06:57Greasy Strangler has as much dong as 28 years later.
- 1:07:03Kearns: Really,
- 1:07:04Jon: Varying
- 1:07:05Kearns: a lot of Don.
- 1:07:06Ryan: the people.

- 1:07:21Kearns: What?
- 1:07:21What?
- 1:07:21Jon: Guys, I'm
- 1:07:22Kearns: What's number one?
- 1:07:23You psycho.
- 1:07:24Jon: on, let me, let me tell you a little bit about Greasy Strangler.
- 1:07:27So father and son, Ronnie and Braden run
- 1:07:30Kearns: I hate this.
- 1:07:30Jon: walking tour
- 1:07:32Kearns: Uh,
- 1:07:33Jon: they, when
- 1:07:33Ryan: Okay.
- 1:07:34Jon: when they meet a woman that they both fall in love with and it turns
- 1:07:38into a competition for infection.
- 1:07:41All the while
- 1:07:42Kearns: you
- 1:07:42Jon: a grease covered serial killer stalking the streets.
- 1:07:46It
- 1:07:47Kearns: can't catch me.
- 1:07:48Jon: it is amazing.
- 1:07:51And just, just for that, the greasy stranglers going on the calendar.
- 1:07:58Kearns: It's greased up.
- 1:07:58Deaf guy.
- 1:08:00Yeah, it's gonna have to
- 1:08:01Ryan: he, is he, please tell me he's deaf.
- 1:08:03Kearns: creeped up.
- 1:08:04Deaf guy.
- 1:08:05Ryan: you can't, you can't catch me anymore.
- 1:08:07Jon: no, no.
- 1:08:09Oh my God.
- 1:08:10I can't believe you guys haven't seen Greasy Strangler.
- 1:08:13Kearns: No,
- 1:08:14Jon: Oh
- 1:08:14Kearns: no.
- 1:08:14Everything I just learned about it.
- 1:08:16I also did that against my will.
- 1:08:18I just want you to know that
- 1:08:19Ryan: I'm, I need that.
- 1:08:21Well, we need that on the list soon, but I'm curious.
- 1:08:24I have a guess for your number one.
- 1:08:26Jon: Okay.
- 1:08:26Gimme your
- 1:08:26Ryan: You haven't mentioned it,
- 1:08:28Kearns: Ryan, I, I so teed up for jokes
- 1:08:31Jon: Nope,
- 1:08:31Kearns: right now because of, like, you, you have a Dick movie that you
- 1:08:35know is gonna be his number one.
- 1:08:37Ryan: Well, it's, well, okay, so real quick story.
- 1:08:40Jon: I've
- 1:08:40Ryan: was watch, well I was watching Ghost Story with my uncle and
- 1:08:45they thought they had like the, the one that was made for tv.
- 1:08:49So there's this one scene where the guy gets pushed down, it's just flying
- 1:08:52in the air and freaked out 'cause they didn't know it was in there.
- 1:08:56They were like, we thought it was the TV one.
- 1:08:57And I was like, you guessed wrong 'cause we just saw a dick on the
- 1:09:01screen just fly down from the air.
- 1:09:03But I just, I had a guess 'cause I was like, you didn't mention Ghost Story and
- 1:09:07that's like, that's criminal in the scene.
- 1:09:09'cause that's what gets the story going.
- 1:09:11Jon: It's
- 1:09:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:09:12Jon: classy for this list, sir. My number
- 1:09:16Kearns: All right.
- 1:09:18Jon: is rare exports and all of the Santa Elf dick
- 1:09:23Kearns: I don't, I've never seen that either.
- 1:09:25Jon: that's on, that's on the calendar for Christmas time, that's definitely
- 1:09:29Ryan: Uh,
- 1:09:29Kearns: Alright.
- 1:09:30Ryan: our Christmas
- 1:09:30Kearns: You sure?
- 1:09:31We, we can slot it in between Schindler's List and, and Dark Man.
- 1:09:35Ryan: It's not that hard to slide in.
- 1:09:37It's okay.
- 1:09:38Kearns: Aw.
- 1:09:39Jon: in rare exports, an archeological team unearths a horrific version of Santa,
- 1:09:45who first kills off all the reindeer that the locals rely on for food and income.
- 1:09:50And then it moves on to kidnapping the town's children and it falls on
- 1:09:55Ryan: Okay.
- 1:09:56Jon: Ari, his father, and two other men to rescue the kids and stop murderous
- 1:10:01Santa and his all nude, all old men elves.
- 1:10:09Kearns: We could talk about this topic for like a full episode, so we could
- 1:10:12go into the, um, this is the end where they use the giant dicks for comedy.
- 1:10:17They can go into like Renaissance paintings where they use the
- 1:10:20giant PHUs to, to glorify people on demons and stuff like that.
- 1:10:25Jon: just, in like 15 minutes, I,
- 1:10:28Kearns: the Dick.
- 1:10:28Jon: I brainstormed seven or eight movies and I had to,
- 1:10:34Kearns: I wonder if
- 1:10:35Jon: to
- 1:10:35Kearns: gonna limit our ship because we talk about Dick so much, but at this point
- 1:10:41Ryan: Nah,
- 1:10:41Kearns: nothing new about it.
- 1:10:43Ryan: it's rated R. It's okay.
- 1:10:45Kearns: Yep.
- 1:10:46So that's 28 years later and that's the top fives that.
- 1:10:49Um, I wish I could wash outta my ears,
- 1:10:53but yeah guys, I hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 1:10:55Um, we're getting back to our normal rotation after this.
- 1:10:58We sort of decided last minute we were gonna make this happen
- 1:11:02and do 28 years after 28 weeks.
- 1:11:04And I'm glad we did to be honest with you.
- 1:11:05So you'll be seeing this about six days from when we're recording it.
- 1:11:09Hopefully you had time to watch the movie.
- 1:11:11If you didn't, um, go fuck yourself.
