- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Moore the UKON Football Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: I want to talk about halftime speeches. I'm not in
- 0:05Speaker 1: there because I'm in the broadcast booth, coach, but you
- 0:09Speaker 1: were attempting to do a speech. You talked, You told
- 0:11Speaker 1: this story after the game and the team just burst
- 0:14Speaker 1: out of the locker room and they weren't waiting around
- 0:16Speaker 1: for you. What did you make of that? That must
- 0:19Speaker 1: have been something different and it must have told you
- 0:21Speaker 1: that this team was ready to get back out and
- 0:23Speaker 1: get after it in the second half.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we usually go out with about three and a
- 0:28Speaker 2: half four minutes left on the clock, and you know,
- 0:32Speaker 2: so I usually go in and leave the I talk
- 0:34Speaker 2: to the team. What I do is when we come
- 0:36Speaker 2: off the field right at the end of the half,
- 0:38Speaker 2: as I gathered the team and talk to him right
- 0:40Speaker 2: then and then let them relax and then just hit
- 0:43Speaker 2: him with something quick before we go out on the
- 0:44Speaker 2: field before the start of the second half. And this week,
- 0:47Speaker 2: I was in there, you know, kind of standing back
- 0:51Speaker 2: observing what they were doing, checking their energy, you know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: what they were talking about, and they were they were
- 0:58Speaker 2: just kind of getting it going, you know, and so
- 1:00Speaker 2: I kind of just stood there and all the next
- 1:03Speaker 2: thing I know, they just charged the door and ran
- 1:05Speaker 2: out on the field, you know, about a minute and
- 1:07Speaker 2: a half, two minutes early. And I was fine with that.
- 1:10Speaker 2: You know, it was great. I didn't need to say
- 1:12Speaker 2: thing to him. They you know, their actions are much
- 1:16Speaker 2: more important than my words, and their accountability to each other.
- 1:20Speaker 2: That peer to peer accountability is the most important thing.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And I felt that they not only trusted each other,
- 1:27Speaker 2: but they were challenging each other in a very positive
- 1:30Speaker 2: way to go out and be a better football team.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So nothing I could have said would have added any
- 1:35Speaker 2: value at that moment. They had it and I really
- 1:38Speaker 2: appreciated that.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yeah, in the aftermath of a winning a one score
- 1:42Speaker 1: game like that seventeen ten, we heard from a lot
- 1:46Speaker 1: of players who were saying they were trying to uplift
- 1:49Speaker 1: the other unit, whether it's offense, defense, whatever it may be.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That is a positive, it seems to me because, as
- 1:56Speaker 1: you say, the players are the players, and they make plays,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and when they're boosting each other's confidence and you know,
- 2:04Speaker 1: pumping each other up when things aren't going one hundred
- 2:06Speaker 1: percent right, that's got to be a real major contributor
- 2:10Speaker 1: to Yukon having success this year.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I think it's so important that we always realize that
- 2:15Speaker 2: it's always about the team, and the team is all
- 2:17Speaker 2: of us. The team is the players, the coaches, the staff,
- 2:19Speaker 2: it's everybody that touches this program and has even a
- 2:25Speaker 2: one percent impact on our ability to win a football game.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And so we talk about performance and being able to
- 2:33Speaker 2: trust each other and support each other is so critical.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And you're going to have times in a season when
- 2:38Speaker 2: one plays one side of the ball is playing better
- 2:41Speaker 2: than the other two sides of the ball. And I'm
- 2:43Speaker 2: including special teams there, and it's important that fingers don't
- 2:46Speaker 2: get pointed. And we've all seen what happens when people
- 2:49Speaker 2: start pointing fingers rather than then say, hey, man, I
- 2:52Speaker 2: got you. You just keep plugging away and we'll keep
- 2:54Speaker 2: locking them down on defense, or hey, you guys, you
- 2:56Speaker 2: know you're going to get a stop, but we're going
- 2:59Speaker 2: to keep scoring point on offense, or hey, we're going
- 3:01Speaker 2: to keep setting up with field position on special teams,
- 3:04Speaker 2: those kinds of things. And so that's the kind of
- 3:06Speaker 2: energy and the kind of attitude that it takes to
- 3:09Speaker 2: have them winning football team, basketball team, baseball team, anything,
- 3:12Speaker 2: because you know, no one's ever played a perfect game.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I guess pitchers have pitched perfect games, but they I
- 3:21Speaker 2: just appreciate that our guys have the maturity to hang
- 3:24Speaker 2: in there, stick together, have a real, I think, an
- 3:27Speaker 2: emotional intelligence about what it means to be a good
- 3:30Speaker 2: teammate and a good team member.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, the defense holds excuse me, rice to ten first
- 3:36Speaker 1: downs only one hundred and seventy yards. There were seven
- 3:40Speaker 1: three and outs that the defense delivered. I think that's
- 3:44Speaker 1: really important to obviously keep momentum going even when you're
- 3:47Speaker 1: not doing anything on offense, you're giving them the ball
- 3:50Speaker 1: back and you're giving them opportunities. The defense in this
- 3:55Speaker 1: game by the Huskies, I mean, this is something that
- 3:59Speaker 1: has been developed. It seems to be getting better week
- 4:01Speaker 1: to week. Last three games, you give them up fifty
- 4:04Speaker 1: three points. That's about seventeen points a game. I mean,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you're gonna win some football games if you keep the
- 4:09Speaker 1: other team's offense or the other team from scoring less
- 4:13Speaker 1: than twenty a game.
- 4:15Speaker 2: We have really good coaches who have a really great
- 4:20Speaker 2: understanding of this scheme. They've done an excellent job of
- 4:23Speaker 2: recognize recognizing what our players do well on an individual
- 4:29Speaker 2: basis and putting them a position to maximize their strengths
- 4:33Speaker 2: and minimize their weaknesses. And then the most important thing
- 4:36Speaker 2: is we have a group of players that really care,
- 4:40Speaker 2: that work their tails off on a daily basis, that
- 4:43Speaker 2: do the work that's necessary, that take the hard coaching,
- 4:47Speaker 2: that have a mature attitude about them and try to
- 4:54Speaker 2: take it from the practice field to the game field,
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, every week. And that's how you come a
- 5:00Speaker 2: better football team. And if all those things aren't working together,
- 5:03Speaker 2: it's tough to be successful. And we've just got to
- 5:06Speaker 2: make sure that we keep emphasizing the things that help
- 5:09Speaker 2: us win football games. And that's the work that we
- 5:11Speaker 2: do during the week. It's the attention to detail, it's
- 5:13Speaker 2: the extra study, it's the right mindset, it's the execution,
- 5:18Speaker 2: it's really it's just it's putting in the work, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and right now we're doing that and we got to
- 5:23Speaker 2: continue to do it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah, week tweak, that's for sure. Ronte Jones actually mentioned
- 5:28Speaker 1: that about Matt Brocky. He was talking about how hard
- 5:31Speaker 1: he coaches him. He said, but that's okay. I don't
- 5:34Speaker 1: mind when he does it. And that's usually a good
- 5:37Speaker 1: sign too, because you know, some guys they don't like
- 5:41Speaker 1: coaches kicking him in the butt forty eight hours a day. Right,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you want a little bit of this, a little bit
- 5:46Speaker 1: of that. But Ronte, from what he was saying, is
- 5:49Speaker 1: fine with whatever coach is going to bring to the
- 5:51Speaker 1: table that's going to make us better.
- 5:54Speaker 2: It's my experience in coaching, and I've been around some
- 5:57Speaker 2: of the best to ever do it. Players. What I'm
- 5:59Speaker 2: saying is it great players want to be coach hard.
- 6:03Speaker 2: They want to be coached hard. You know, you go
- 6:06Speaker 2: back to a guy like Steve Young, who's in the
- 6:08Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, And if Steve was supposed to put
- 6:11Speaker 2: a slant on the front pad as opposed to the backpad,
- 6:14Speaker 2: or the back pad as supposed to the front pad,
- 6:16Speaker 2: and he didn't put it right there, and you said
- 6:18Speaker 2: good through he said, no, what you know, coach me,
- 6:20Speaker 2: coach me, coached me. Same thing with Peyton and I
- 6:22Speaker 2: remember with you know, stories with my dad. You know,
- 6:25Speaker 2: Peyton wanted to be coached hard. He didn't want anyone
- 6:28Speaker 2: to cut him any slack. All you have to do
- 6:30Speaker 2: is listen to the great Tom Brady talk about you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: he wanted to be coached hard, and great players want
- 6:37Speaker 2: to be coached hard because they want the best to
- 6:41Speaker 2: come out of themselves all the time. And that's the
- 6:45Speaker 2: coach's job is. A coach's job is to push you
- 6:47Speaker 2: further than you believe, you know you can go, to
- 6:50Speaker 2: take you beyond what your self imposed limitations are. And
- 6:53Speaker 2: so as a staff, that's our philosophy. Coach them hard,
- 6:57Speaker 2: love them harder. But we're going to coach their asses hard.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And the great ones want that. And if they don't
- 7:03Speaker 2: want that, then I don't want them. So it's mutual.
- 7:09Speaker 1: That's pretty simple. That's good math. I like that. All right.
- 7:13Speaker 1: We'll be back with more of the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Got to talk about Georgia State the Panthers coming in
