- 0:02This is an unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three forty one and three forty two. Nami in Big Trouble, the
- 0:20Zombie Mansion, and the Invisible Man, and Hold On a second, guys,
- 0:27hold On, Give It to Me, Mystery of the Zombies, Hogbacks,
- 0:31Nightmarish Research Laboratory. In these episodes, we get some really fun,
- 0:40classic running around a haunted house kind of antics that I truly love and it's
- 0:48just exactly my vibe, and unfortunately it's punctuated with something truly awful that is
- 0:56the exact opposite of my vibe that I hated with all my parts. Welcome
- 1:03to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank
- 1:25you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this episode. What's up,
- 1:30One Piece crew? How you doing out there? I am starting this
- 1:34super late because of tech problems, So if there are tech problems in this
- 1:38recording, please forgive me. I don't know what my garage band is going
- 1:42to do today, but who knows? This whole like a couple of episodes.
- 1:52I can't remember who it was last week, but somebody called Thriller Bark
- 1:57Scooby Doo Island, and yeah, this is a super Scooby dooish episode.
- 2:04And I mean that in like the best way. I really love, so
- 2:09love this haunted house aesthetic. How classically everything like it's all, you know,
- 2:17a one piece version of a thing. It's all oh to take on
- 2:23whatever trope you've got going on, but it's all falls within that. Like
- 2:29we've literally got naombie wandering up and down dark halways holding a candelabra. The
- 2:34only thing that would have been more hilarious is if she wound up wearing some
- 2:38like long filmy white gauzy dress and you know, was somehow there was like
- 2:46maybe a thunderstorm something to add a little exterior ambiance. But otherwise, we
- 2:53have got ghosts, we have got zombies. We have got paintings that come
- 2:59alive. We have got hunted Jack in the boxes. We have got fireplaces
- 3:04with secret entrances that spin around. We have got once again, hands coming
- 3:10up out of graves. We have it all and I really really enjoyed this.
- 3:16So I am going to just get this out of the way. I'm
- 3:23sure nobody will be surprised at all. But it's interesting because episode three forty
- 3:30one on the one Piece wiki, which I occasionally will go to to just
- 3:37see the title, it says Nami in Big Trouble, whereas in on Funimation
- 3:46the title is Namies in a Major Pinch, And I feel like the Namies
- 3:54in a Major Pinch title feels like a little bit more pointed and euphemistic,
- 4:02and I wish that it just said big Trouble on mine as well. But
- 4:10you guys, we start things off in episode three forty one with Nami taking
- 4:20a shower, which is already a super weird thing. She's taking a shower
- 4:28because she feels like she smells like zombies and doesn't want to anymore, which
- 4:35I understand in theory, but I just feel like that would be so low
- 4:41priority for me in the current circumstances that I cannot emphasize enough how unwilling to
- 4:46get naked I would be in a place like this. But she, of
- 4:51course has to be the one taking the shower. She of course has to
- 4:59be naked for what happens next, and that is getting assaulted by an invisible
- 5:09man who threatens her and tells her how good fear looks on her and how
- 5:17much he likes that while he is holding her pinned to the wall with his
- 5:24hand over her mouth while her friends are outside, and when she asks for
- 5:30help and they come in, the only thing USAP can do is ogle her
- 5:38being naked, and then and then to really put the cherry on top of
- 5:48this rapy Sunday, we have Usop telling her later that he doesn't believe her.
- 6:00I really want that all to sink in, you guys, I really
- 6:04want to back up here, and I want you all to take a second
- 6:11and think about that whole collection of things happening together the way that they do.
- 6:18She just doesn't need to be naked for this whole thing to be creepy
- 6:24and scary. We don't need the fear looks good on you and him like
- 6:31clearly groping her, even though it's not explicitly shown, it's very clearly happening.
- 6:43And to then have it be that usup is like in denial about the
- 6:46creepy stuff that's happening, and so he decides to play it off that it
- 6:51didn't happen and she was imagining things. What are you doing? Like,
- 7:03genuinely, what are you doing? This is so awful from top to bottom,
- 7:11And I am so grossed out at the fact that it keeps being a
- 7:17thing. And I know it's never gonna stop, because that is apparently the
- 7:21nature of this particular beast. But Yo Nami, being hyper sexualized at every
- 7:30opportunity is getting so old, and I am going to need like some sort
- 7:36of button to press every time it happens to just have me saying the same
- 7:42shit that I said last time, because it's never gonna be new. I'm
- 7:46never going to have a new exciting take. It's always going to be this
- 7:48is gross and unnecessary? Why are you doing it every time? And I
- 7:56like this? This whole thing too that kills me is how like And I'm
- 8:03not positive that this is a direct reference, but for those who there have
- 8:13been a few different episodes of various podcasts I've covered where I've talked about like
- 8:18some of the worst movies I've ever seen and movies that I almost like just
- 8:24walked out of in the theater didn't make it to the end. I've never
- 8:26actually walked out of a movie that I can remember, but the one that
- 8:31got me the closest to walking out was Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon, which
- 8:37is an invisible man movie and it has a similarly gratuitous rape scene, and
- 8:46you don't actually, like it's not confirmed that he raped her, but it's
- 8:52implied. And the whole scene is him, of course invisible in a woman's
- 8:58bedroom who is young and gorgeous and of course topless, and he grabs her
- 9:05and like pins her to the bed, and then the camera just cuts away
- 9:09to a different scene. And I think it's very clear what they're saying happened.
- 9:13And so that scene even way back when when I saw that movie,
- 9:18and I must have been like sixteen years old, if that even back then,
- 9:24I was like, oh my god, really come on, so to
- 9:30see this kind of thing again, and in a show like this where everything
- 9:37is lighthearted and goofy and fun, and then you have to fuck it up
- 9:43with this and for what what kind of payoff is there? Even you know,
- 9:50like it's just again, I do not think that there would be anything
- 9:56lost by her being clothed and her friends be leaving her. I really don't.
- 10:03And it's just always one of those things where like you try and put
- 10:09a male character in this situation, like have it be usup who's being assaulted,
- 10:15and all of a sudden, well that's too dark. That's really weird.
- 10:18Yeah, isn't it? Isn't it? Like, come on anyway,
- 10:28Sarah from says, I need to start setting alarms for this. I see
- 10:31we are at that part. Brian says there are a couple more questionable scenes
- 10:35in the future, but it never gets this bad again. I want to
- 10:41believe you. I feel like somebody said that before about the scene where everybody
- 10:48gets nosebleeds peeking at her in the bath, and here we are now,
- 10:54but I want to believe you, so you know, I just I have
- 11:01to. I have to. It's such a long part of this episode that
- 11:05if it weren't so incredibly there even could have been a way to do this
- 11:15where it's genuinely scary. But it's done in such a gratuitous way. It's
- 11:24so clearly meant to be titillating, and that's the part that I find really
- 11:30offensive. This is a sort of thing with Game of Thrones as well,
- 11:33where people were just like, well, but rape was a fact of life,
- 11:37and if you don't show it, then you're shying away from things.
- 11:39And I'm like, yeah, but we don't need to see a woman been
- 11:43over with her titties bouncing and crying, like I can understand that a rape
- 11:48took place without you putting a whole thing on screen, And that is the
- 11:54way it feels here where Nami is like when USAP comes in for refreshing people's
- 12:01memories, if you don't recall or if you haven't watched this recently, when
- 12:07Usa comes in because she's crying out for help, the camera does that thing
- 12:13where there's like a gong and it jumps from one like frame to another dome
- 12:20dome, dome, and the frames are her tits, her bare stomach,
- 12:28and her crotch literally zoomed in filling the screen. It's just it's by far
- 12:41the worst this show has been. And I can't believe. I just I
- 12:46really can't get over the fact that this sort of thing just used to be
- 12:52part of our collective accepted storytelling device and we just didn't see a problem with
- 12:58it. Like it's just stop and thinking about it, Like how fucked up
- 13:03is that that there was probably a time where almost nobody was bothered by this,
- 13:09And I like, and I'm sure if I had watched this back when,
- 13:16I probably would have been like, I don't like this, but I
- 13:20can't put my finger on why like it wouldn't I wouldn't have had the words
- 13:24to really explain, and probably a lot of people would be like, you're
- 13:30being too sensitive. It's just a cartoon, it's just funny whatever. And
- 13:33I just think about that all the time, that there were probably some folks
- 13:37all along that were just like, you know, this is super uncool right
- 13:43about so many things, and we're just told letting up. Oh my god,
- 13:48you just want to ruin everything. Everything is to be pc for you,
- 13:52and like people are doing that these days, but there's so much more
- 13:58of a groundswell against that kind of voice now that those people are the ones
- 14:03that I mock. And I'm not too proud to tell you all, I'm
- 14:09not sure that I wouldn't have been one of the people telling somebody to lighten
- 14:13up way back when. So anyway, y'all know, I had to.
- 14:20I had to talk about this. It is just and I'm realizing Florian said
- 14:24last week that there was something that or no. When I did the Live,
- 14:31the Live, they're all lives they want to be I think Florian,
- 14:33you said something about how you want me to just be myself and go for
- 14:37it, and I think that probably were frying and considering that this invisible man
- 14:46is, as our resident like wacky mad scientist doctor put it, is a
- 14:54skirt chaser and has mentioned Robin. Also, I'm going to assume this shit
- 15:01isn't over, you know, that there's probably some other and I'm going to
- 15:09assume hopefully that his introduction was the most over the top part. And after
- 15:15this, it's not going to ever be this like explicit again. But clearly
- 15:20him like wanting to make Nami his bride somehow is gonna be an ongoing subplot,
- 15:30which I am not excited about it at all. So and it's also
- 15:35like the fact that he was spying on her comes as absolutely no surprise to
- 15:43Hogback, who basically predicts that's what happened because he hears I think us up
- 15:50like uses one of his gunpowder balls to get rid of the dude, and
- 15:58Hogback is down in the dining room and hears it, and it's like,
- 16:02oh, man, is he did he do it? Again? Like,
- 16:07clearly knows that this being is around, and he has a history of doing
- 16:12this sort of thing, which I want to be like grossed out by.
- 16:18But frankly, Hogback is obviously such a fucking maniac that I'm not surprised he
- 16:23just lets the sexual assaulter continue sexually assaulting. What are you gonna do?
- 16:29Am I right, Sarah? Him says the animes need to draw things out
- 16:37really does not help either. This whole scene was just two pages in the
- 16:41manga and framed a lot less fan fan service. Eh, that's too bad.
- 16:51It's too bad, you guys. I don't I don't like being in
- 16:55this being in this headspace because otherwise he's episodes, there's so much fun,
- 17:02you know. I just it's such a shame that that's cast a pall over
- 17:06everything. But okay, we're gonna get past it. But you know,
- 17:11she doesn't get out of the shower and like feel safe for I think it's
- 17:21about a full, like six or seven minute scene, so it's not I
- 17:29mean, in an episode that's a total of like eighteen minutes long. That's
- 17:36a lot of the episode. So okay, we're gonna go. Now back
- 17:42to the sunny and Zoro is like looking around at their situation and the fact
- 17:51that they got caught up in this weird web, as did the mini Mary,
- 17:56and he's just thinking about how obvious as it is that this is a
- 18:02trap and that they are being like maneuvered in such a way that there is
- 18:10only one way that they can get in, and that is via this like
- 18:14front gate. So in his opinion, the very fact that somebody is trying
- 18:21to get them to go a certain direction is in itself a real bad sign,
- 18:27and we should just err on the side of not doing whatever this anonymous
- 18:33person wants us to do, because I Am not thinking they're doing it for
- 18:37our benefit. But he looks down and sees that Lufy is already like about
- 18:45to walk through the gates. I really do enjoy when Zoro's like figuring all
- 18:51this out, talking about this, you know, this the trap, and
- 18:56how obvious it is. He is sort of talking to himself. So then
- 19:00when the camera moves, Lufy says something like, what are you doing?
- 19:03Just muttering up there? And I like whenever there's a moment in a TV
- 19:11show where it seems as if something is happening, like maybe inside somebody's head,
- 19:18or one of my favorite ones is when the music seems like it's being
- 19:23played over the scene by the sound designers, but then the camera pulls back
- 19:27and there's like an actual guitarist sitting next to our main character playing it.
- 19:34Those kinds of moments are always fun. And so this moment with Zoro talking
- 19:40to himself, I really thought he was talking to his friends. So when
- 19:45the camera pulls out and we see how far they are from him, and
- 19:48he has been talking to himself the whole time. And it's not the way
- 19:52this joke has been done, where you think you're talking to your friends because
- 19:56you've turned your back and haven't noticed that they've all walked away. It's just
- 20:02how it's not like that. It's how Zoro operates that he does sort of
- 20:06just talk to himself. He's very insular, you know. So when he
- 20:11says to Lufy, are you seriously just going to walk into this extremely obvious
- 20:19trap, Lufy, in a moment of real beauty, says, yeah,
- 20:26pretty much, y'all. I really thought we were gonna get a trap.
- 20:36What do you mean? No, nope, it's just a yeah, what
- 20:44do you? Of course? I am is I'm not really seeing the problem.
- 20:48Can you elaborate what you think the problem is here? I fucking cracked
- 20:56up. I am not gonna lie, and then follows up with we haven't
- 21:02got anything better to do that for me? That was a real winner.
- 21:11Just I mean, you know, I can't find fault with that argument.
- 21:18That's pretty solid. So this bit just was so good and he basically throws
- 21:26his hat and it was just like, yeah, all right, I guess.
- 21:30So they wind up coming across the fucking cerberus, which Lufy immediately is
- 21:37like I would like to eat it, which is a really weird reaction.
- 21:41Like I am willing to accept him feeling this way about sea creatures, because
- 21:48anything that isn't a mammal always feels a little bit more like I'm really willing
- 21:56to immediately see it as food. And even some mammals a giant pig for
- 22:04instance, or something, I can still be like, well, yeah,
- 22:10okay, roast that bitch up. I get it. But these are two
- 22:15wolves and a fox, and it just doesn't feel like the thing you jump
- 22:22to, even if you are a huge like meat eater, it just doesn't
- 22:29feel like the kind of creature you look at and think, I bet that
- 22:33would be good, and I bet they aren't good. From what I understand,
- 22:38eating predator animals is a very different like experience than eating animals that are
- 22:47omnivores or herbivores, and I am not feel like there was some study.
- 22:56I remember this one of those little sort of memes that's gone around where it's
- 23:00a couple of paragraphs that were cut together, and it was somebody talking about
- 23:07how a person asked some scientists what a t rex would taste like, and
- 23:15they did some analysis of what a predator that size, what their body composition
- 23:23would be like, and they figured out that a t rex would be the
- 23:30kind of animal that consumes so much prey and is sort of has like such
- 23:37a what's the word I want, not even sophisticated, but just an efficient
- 23:44digestive system and liver to filter that it would be able to handle extreme amounts
- 23:53of protein and probably certain like carbons and heavy metals that would have been in
- 24:00the atmosphere and the soil at the time that likely a t rex's flesh would
- 24:07have been essentially poisonous to eat. That if a person did indeed kill a
- 24:14t rex and try and eat it, if they had anything close to our
- 24:18present day physiology, it would kill them. And that is just immediately what
- 24:25I'm thinking of with these wolves is just like, dude, you don't want
- 24:27to eat those? I feel like that's going to be really bad for you.
- 24:30I mean, obviously you don't want to eat them, because these bitches
- 24:33were dead at one point, Like I fully believe that they were brought back
- 24:37to life, and so probably you don't want to eat them for that reason
- 24:40also, but even if they were just regular ass normal wolves. So anyway,
- 24:47he like kind of gets these creatures off guard by asking whether or not
- 24:52that he can eat them, and they stand there staring at him in this
- 24:59dejected kind of manner, and their tail droops, and Lufy kind of comes
- 25:07at them and does this like little bark and they back away from him,
- 25:12and eventually it gets to the point where he's like, well, obviously this
- 25:18thing is going to be our pet, and I am going to tame it.
- 25:22And he goes up to them and tries to do, Oh, who's
- 25:26all go, boys? And I love this? He just says a good
- 25:32boy, but then ends it plural, who's a good boys? They chomp
- 25:37different parts of his body at the same time, to which he has no
- 25:41reaction because as a rubber man, I guess it just doesn't do anything.
- 25:45And he gets them to let him go very easy, very soft, very
- 25:53gentle, and then he says, now sit and he Basically, it seems
- 26:00as if he punches them or body slams them and they go down, and
- 26:06that for him at least is mission accomplished. It is now tame, which
- 26:11is don't you just wish training a dog was that easy? But that is
- 26:15not how it works. But yeah, this Cerberus winds up becoming Lufy's horse
- 26:23basically, and we see them all like walking into that big graveyard and he
- 26:30is just riding on its back and it looks so sad. You guys,
- 26:36I would be all about this if the Cerberus seemed as if he were like
- 26:41kind of interested and excited, but he just seems really downtrodden and discouraged,
- 26:48and I really felt bad for him. So they're walking through the fog and
- 26:57I love this. Robin says something about how they're you know, they may
- 27:03as well be going in circles because of this fog, who knows, and
- 27:08fucking Sanji says something like if we hadn't brought moss Head, maybe we'd be
- 27:15fine, as if to indicate that the very presence of Zoro means it's more
- 27:23likely you're gonna get lost, like he's a bad luck charm, which I
- 27:29kind of enjoy that interpretation, it's it makes it a little bit more legendary
- 27:36that Zoro is so easy to get lost that he misinterprets directions or forgets them
- 27:42that quickly. The idea that it's just like maybe there was like a cursed
- 27:48laid on him at some point. So now not only is he always lost
- 27:53but and and has like no sense of direction, but also anybody around him
- 28:00also gets lost. I don't know, I just found that really funny.
- 28:03So this is when our friends turn a corner and they come across that weird
- 28:11sort of mummified unicorn pouring. I am guessing sake for a tree with a
- 28:22man's face and arms attached, and also legs, but his legs are much
- 28:27less human looking. I guess the feet are really the least human looking part.
- 28:33And all of these people stop dead, and I love lufy a tree
- 28:40with a geezer's face is totally getting drunk with a beat up unicorn. I'm
- 28:48I appreciate that summary because it's so weird a tableau, and hearing it said
- 28:56out loud, it's no less weird. There's something very like validating about you
- 29:03say it out loud. No, that sounds fucking crazy. Out loud also,
- 29:10So yeah, these two are just like sitting there, and all of
- 29:15a sudden we cut to Frankie chasing the unicorn, saying that he's going to
- 29:21make a wish on it, whether it likes it or not, and Lufy
- 29:26is trying to chase down the tree and he has his net aloft, so
- 29:30I am assuming that this was to make him a pet. But eventually he
- 29:36does corner them and try and convince them to become members of the crew,
- 29:41which of course his present members are much much less enthusiastic about. I do
- 29:48really like the voice of the tree. He's just like, no, leave
- 29:52me alone. What are you doing? Kid? Like he's genuinely I just
- 29:56wanted to have a drink with my friend go home. And the fact that
- 30:04Lufy asks these guys to also join the crew, he is very He just
- 30:11needs to have a little more discernment about throwing this invitation out there. I'm
- 30:15just saying, So, let's see, we have the conversation between Hogback and
- 30:27Absalom. Is that his name, the Invisible Man Absalom? I can't remember
- 30:33how it's pronounced. The conversation between the two of them is sort of weird
- 30:37because like Absalom, you see his silhouette, so it's like he is invisible,
- 30:47but is like it seems like he can control when he's invisible, in
- 30:52other words, and we find out here something kind of interesting. Absalom mom
- 31:00is saying that he wants to take Nami and make her his wife or whatever,
- 31:06and Hogback is like, I understand that this is your normal emo,
- 31:11but you can't do that with this one because she is worth way too much.
- 31:17And he's like, what do you mean? And Hogback says their bounties
- 31:22add up to something like six hundred million berries, which it honestly just never
- 31:30even entered my mind for a moment that we would have to be worried about
- 31:36this guy, in particular handing them over. I just thought a man like
- 31:44this is going to in the tradition of like a cartoon mad doctor would be
- 31:52wanting new victims to experiment on, and the fact that he just needs the
- 31:59money or wants the money, but I'm gonna put it with needs because he
- 32:01seems like the kind of guy that uses real rare ingredients and equipment for things
- 32:07that need a lot of upkeep and replacing, So probably he's working on a
- 32:14budget that's like very high, and he needs to have some income source to
- 32:21supplement all of his research and experimentation, So it makes a lot of sense
- 32:27that he would be after money. It just did not occur to me that
- 32:30was I didn't think that this even seemed like the sort of place where you
- 32:35would find out that there were bounties out there. Does he get like a
- 32:38paper delivered like what we have seen a paper delivery system an alabasta in that
- 32:46arc? Right? Is that? Was that the one where it's like a
- 32:50stork and an otter deliver it. There's a real weird sequence there that I
- 32:55kind of have remember, But I just feel like that sort of delivery system,
- 33:01I don't see them coming in this island, not even necessarily because it's
- 33:06so far out, but it's just not their vibe. And this is the
- 33:09kind of island where you toss that paper off your ship deck and keep going.
- 33:15You don't stop and pull up to the front door. So yeah,
- 33:20he tells Absalom stay the fuck away from Nami because we are going to need
- 33:25her, and then we have the whole thing in the hallway where she's talking
- 33:34to usop about how obviously shit like he saw her being lifted off the ground.
- 33:42How could he not believe her? He thinks that, like he has
- 33:45to pretend that he didn't see anything, because what she's concerned with is the
- 33:50fact that he saw her naked, So he has got to lie in order
- 33:54to help her save face. It's a really weird, like convoluted thing that
- 34:00he's got going on. But anyway, what this boils down to is them
- 34:07both kind of saying to Chopper, this place is fucked up, and you
- 34:10have to know that Hogback is behind all of this. And Chopper not only
- 34:19is completely failing to use any of his intelligence, but says to Nami,
- 34:25well, why don't we just go ask doctor Hogback about it? How does
- 34:30that sound? And stalks off and there's a pause, and then us Up
- 34:35says that sounds like a really really bad idea, And I was like,
- 34:38thank you. You don't go up to the person you think is guilty of
- 34:45a thing when they own the house. No, the grounds have all the
- 34:52weapons on their side and tell them you suspect them of a giant hay his
- 35:00crime and ask their perspective on it. Like that's for me, Chopper,
- 35:12what are you doing, babe? He's just in such hero worship mode at
- 35:14the moment, and it's so weird because he's like, how could you think
- 35:17that? And I'm like, this man literally told you at dinner that he
- 35:22is working on bringing the dead back to life. Sir, he said it,
- 35:29and you told him with your mouth that you supported those efforts and that
- 35:36research, and now you're acting like them, suggesting that he might have something
- 35:42to do with the zombification of what looks to be every living thing on this
- 35:45island. You're acting all offended over it. What are you? What are
- 35:50you talking about? Bra, Like, get it together. So this this
- 35:58basically lead to them finding their way back to the main room where they had
- 36:02had dinner, only now everything is in darkness. There is no indication that
- 36:09this room has been used recently at all, and they can't find their host
- 36:14and everything is just feeling real weird. And then all of a sudden,
- 36:20one of the candelabras flares to life and there is Hildone and he is just
- 36:27chilling like a bat the way he does. I am going to say once
- 36:31again that Hildon looks like a Cereal mascot. And also, guys, I
- 36:37really love him, Like I think Hildon might be one of my favorite character
- 36:45designs of the show. He there's certain there's certain characters that are like have
- 36:50interesting elements, but the elements are put together in a way that I'm like,
- 36:53this feels like it doesn't make any visual sense. And then there's Hildon,
- 36:59who all of him just seems to go together. He's got that perfectly
- 37:06spherical body head with like a nose that feels extremely round and eyes that are
- 37:13extremely round. Then that's all sort of like offset by the real spiky hair
- 37:21coming up from the top of his head and the real spiky teeth coming down
- 37:25from the inside of his mouth, so those like really balance each other.
- 37:30And then he's got the giant bat wings with his like little hands at the
- 37:34ends of them, so that he has to stand with his arms crossed in
- 37:37front of himself like he's a bat. And those things look really good together
- 37:42wrapped around his like mummified body. So he's got an odd like combo of
- 37:50elements of a mummy and a dracula going on. And then the fact that
- 37:55he's got that big bottle on his back just adds a little bit of intrigue,
- 38:00you know, Like this guy isn't as simple as just being a weird
- 38:07Dracula man. He also has some kind of agenda with this bottle of god
- 38:13knows what. I really if they made like a little figure of him,
- 38:20I wouldn't be mad at having it as like a Halloween decoration. I know
- 38:23that there'd be plenty of people out there who would use it as a year
- 38:25round decoration. I don't get down like that. I appreciate those who do,
- 38:30but it's not for me. But it would make a pretty good stuffedye,
- 38:35you know, like one of those little squishmallows of him, I think
- 38:38would look really good. So anyway, he is trying to convince them that
- 38:46everything is fine, and won't they just follow him to their guest rooms,
- 38:52to which, understandably, our friends are like, you cannot be fucking serious.
- 38:58Are you really thinking that after everything, we're just gonna fucking go laid
- 39:04down and go to sleep under your roof? Is that likely? What are
- 39:07you thinking? And he starts to get genuinely sad, like you can see
- 39:13his eyes are He's just downcast. He starts to sweat. There's a whole
- 39:19sensation of him trying to fix whatever, like misunderstanding as he puts it his
- 39:25happen to cause them to turn on him, which I am not entirely sure
- 39:31what the motive was. He says something about when they accuse him of leaving
- 39:37them in that cemetery. First he tries to say that he just had to
- 39:42pee really bad and so he forgot and left them there. It's just I'm
- 39:46not really sure why he left them there, because part of me was like,
- 39:51well, maybe you just hoped they would die, But if you want
- 39:57them to be dead, you could probably have killed them any number of ways.
- 40:01By now, what was it the zombies would do that you couldn't do
- 40:06yourself. I'm not really sure what the point was of that, but maybe
- 40:10we'll see. And then we hear a woman's voice chiming in as he's like,
- 40:16well, let me see what I can get the doctor to say about
- 40:22it. She says, you've bungled it and now I have to take care
- 40:25of it. And he starts to sweat even more and insisting to this disembodied
- 40:34voice, no, no, no, I got it, I got it.
- 40:36I'll just take them up to their rooms. It'll be fine. And
- 40:39then the camera pulls out and there is a weird painting of a woman whose
- 40:46faces stitch together, and she says, I think it's a little late for
- 40:52that. And I'm over here, you know, watching this episode, like,
- 40:57oh sweet, we have live paintings. I'm all about it. And
- 41:00that was like off the bat, But then when everybody starts to be like,
- 41:08oh my god, talking painting, what the fuck? Very rightfully,
- 41:13so she then stretches her neck so that her head is out of the frame
- 41:22on the end of a very long neck, and then turns to look at
- 41:28them. You guys, this is by far the creepiest thing this show has
- 41:31ever done. Her just stretching her neck is so unnerving. I mean,
- 41:39you know, like, and it didn't really I didn't stop to think about
- 41:44it because I had said about what a classic trope it is to have paintings
- 41:49that are like watching you from the walls that move, But I've never really
- 41:53thought about what the payoff is supposed to be in the end of paintings that
- 42:00are alive. And I guess the idea was, oh, what if you
- 42:07like wound up inside the painting, like trapped in there? Like what if
- 42:14those people weren't even just painted, but they were somehow imprisoned in there?
- 42:21But I never really took it to the next step where it's like, what
- 42:24if somebody from the painting comes out of it and grabs you and starts to
- 42:30pull you into it. And so I don't even want to call what happens
- 42:36next a trope exactly, because I'm not sure if it falls under that category.
- 42:42But she grabs Chopper and starts to drag him toward her, and I
- 42:51genuinely was like freaking out a little bit because I was thinking, are we
- 42:54going to get like a two D Chopper in the show? You know that's
- 43:00like been flattened out because he's in the painting? What are we So Nami
- 43:04goes after Chopper and she manages to get there before this woman fully pulls him
- 43:10in. If that was what she was intending to do, it's again unclear,
- 43:15And she's struggling with the woman in the painting to get Chopper back as
- 43:21Usup looks over his shoulder and there's a pig's head on the wall with a
- 43:25couple of swords balanced over its head in a kind of decoration, and it
- 43:32chucks a sword at him, and as he's saying this that there's like,
- 43:39you know, threatening taxidermy back here, Nami. He looks down and there
- 43:45is an eye opening on the bear skin rug that one of the swords landed
- 43:52in, which this bear apparently takes exception to, and he stands up and
- 43:58is like, who the hell put a damn sword in my back? So
- 44:01it's a pretty fun sequence where basically everything with a face in the room,
- 44:09from statue type things to this you know rug, to the paintings all come
- 44:20alive, and we've got us up. Who manages to get away from the
- 44:27bear and he's clinging to the candelabra. He grabs a candle off of it
- 44:31and chucks it at the bear and it lights him on fire, and then
- 44:37all of the other paintings really go nuts and start to talk about how he
- 44:43has. One of them says, oh the rug manity. I was like,
- 44:49really, guys, the carpet itself is doing a real Austin Powers sort
- 44:57of reference. I can't believe this. You threw a candle at me?
- 45:01Who does that? And I was thinking, man, I really wonder about
- 45:07the released day of this episode and the released day of Austin Powers. I'm
- 45:12just asking questions. But this moment is when things really just basically hit the
- 45:22fan, and we go into the next episode with everybody being chased in various
- 45:29parts of the island. We've got these three being chased down the hallway.
- 45:35They eventually wind up with the fireplace that turns them into a different room,
- 45:39and they are able to hide from these creatures there because they hold it shut,
- 45:45but there's already a zombie on the other side, so it's not as
- 45:50safe as one could wish. And then they wind up in this weird bedroom
- 45:57and it's got all of these pictures on the wall of this girl that they
- 46:06saw earlier with the Her name is Victoria something, but she is the one
- 46:13that has the grudge against dishes and dishwear. And at first, fair like,
- 46:21is this her room? That doesn't really make sense because you don't just
- 46:27have a million pictures of yourself in your own room. So Nami picks up
- 46:35a photo album or a scrap book. It's a scrap book, and there
- 46:38are all of these different articles in there about Victoria Chindrey. Okay, Chindrey
- 46:46is her last name, and she was like this really well known actress.
- 46:52And then she reaches an article where there was an accident and apparently she died,
- 47:00but they all saw her walking around and talking, and you know,
- 47:07it takes them a really long time to think through the fact that she had
- 47:12a very different personality and that she had like big obvious stitches on her face.
- 47:19So once they figure this out and they start to put two and two
- 47:22together about the fact that these are like all reanimated dead creatures on this island,
- 47:30they're like, well, we really need to get something like get out
- 47:34of here, and fucking Nami. In the midst of all this, spots
- 47:38what looks like a treasure chest behind us up and she can't let it go.
- 47:45She can't just be like, I have better shit to think about right
- 47:47now, because in her opinion, she doesn't, and if it's treasure,
- 47:51it trumps literally everything else. So she insists that they open it, which
- 47:57results in this giant, terrifying jack in the box popping out. And even
- 48:02then, even after a giant terrifying jack in the box pops out and scares
- 48:07the living daylights out of them, even then, when they're running away,
- 48:13Namia is thinking to herself, Wow, he said there's no treasure in this
- 48:19room. Interesting wording. That sounds like there is treasure in another room.
- 48:25And I'm like, girl, that's not what that sounds like. I am
- 48:29sure because it's being brought up that's going to be what it turns out to
- 48:32mean because for the show, sure, but I would not have interpreted it
- 48:38that way at all. And it just feels like, girl, this is
- 48:42not the time, all right. You're running for your life for like the
- 48:45third time today. Just stop worrying about the treasure. That's not your priority
- 48:50right now. And as they flee down the hall, we have a couple
- 48:54of the guys in different paintings coming out to try and scare them and grab
- 49:00them, and they get interrupted by this dude Rhyuma I think is the name,
- 49:08and he is wearing those like wooden platform sandals that I think are like
- 49:15called like rice patty sandals something like that, and he is very skeleton like.
- 49:24I don't know that he's really just a skeleton because he looks like he's
- 49:28got some skin clinging to him still, but he is definitely like in the
- 49:34kind of shape where he should not be alive anymore. And he is saying
- 49:39I will take care of this. Guys from the paintings, don't worry about
- 49:44it, go back to bed. I'm on it, and is really confident
- 49:49with it, so clearly he has done this ship before. And I am
- 49:53not excited about this for them, because I mean, our friends are like
- 49:57real cute and everything, but they're not up for it. So we wind
- 50:06up. We go back first to the straw Hats that are with Lufy as
- 50:12they're exploring this forest and they're arguing about who gets to be invited to the
- 50:20crew, and Sanjie calls Frankie a robot, and Frankie says, I'm not
- 50:30a robot, I'm a cyborg. How many times do I have to tell
- 50:35you, to which Sanjie says to Frankie, I don't care what you call
- 50:42yourself, You're still a pervert, to which Frankie grins and says, oh,
- 50:49so you do understand me after all. And it was such a puzzling
- 50:53exchange because I haven't seen Frankie seemed like a pervert really, And Sanjie,
- 51:00you are the biggest pervert. Who are you callin pervert? Sir Sanji?
- 51:07That's you? What are you talking about? I was just really no self
- 51:15awareness from that young man, none at all. So this is when Robin
- 51:21starts to point out that like all of the creatures, they've been running into
- 51:24have these weird stitches or they have bandages, and they definitely all have numbers
- 51:30written on their side. And there she's assuming this means that they are all
- 51:36working for the same guy. And as they're talking about this, all of
- 51:42a sudden, these ghosts appear. This is such a weird little sequence,
- 51:46y'all, because I don't know what they sound like in the original. I
- 51:52am thinking that I'm gonna try and go over and hear it. But somebody
- 51:59finally he says, they're saying negative. I think it's Robin. In the
- 52:06dub. It sounds for all the world like they're saying nicotine. It is
- 52:10so weird. It is not the kind of pronunciation of negative that feels like
- 52:15it was written or said by people who speak English is their native language.
- 52:21So I don't know if that's like the actual same sound that they used in
- 52:25the original, or if it was dubbed and they say something different in the
- 52:30original, But it's nicotine, NiCoT nicotive like that. There's not unpronouncing the
- 52:37V too much. It's like barely even there. I did not know what
- 52:42the fuck they were saying until Robin points it out, and what happens with
- 52:47these guys is they basically they fly through you and cause this deep depression.
- 52:55Like a depression isn't even an adequate word. It's like a total despair,
- 53:02and it's coupled with a self loathing, which, honestly, do any of
- 53:08us need more of this in our lives? Like I feel like we're good,
- 53:12we can we can all just imagine thanks, how this goes no,
- 53:19no, no more necessary. And it happens first to Frankie, then it
- 53:27happens to Lufy. Both Sanji and Zoro are watching this and like rolling their
- 53:34eyes a little bit, and Zoro says something about how if they were just
- 53:39more disciplined, they would be able to like get past this and not let
- 53:46it affect them so much, and then one of them goes through him and
- 53:53he winds up completely crumpling as well. And I really really did appreciate that,
- 54:00because y'all, again, how many of us have been told as people
- 54:08who struggle maybe with depression, maybe with you know, highs and lows of
- 54:14like mania, that it's just our lack of discipline, and if we tried
- 54:22hard enough and we're simply better people, that we would be able to counteract
- 54:28it and not experience this at all. It's a really common you know.
- 54:35It's the sort of thing that like Owen has struggled with this his whole life.
- 54:39And he saw his mother share some meme that was like, these are
- 54:46antidepressants, and it was a photo of a pair of sneakers and a forest
- 54:52and then a photo of pills and it said this is shit, which is
- 54:57just you're so ignorant. Oh my god. Anybody's sharing that is just an
- 55:01ignoramus. That's all there is to it. Depression is a very real thing.
- 55:07Medications are very real things, and the whole leg well, everybody's on
- 55:12medication these days. We can't all be depressed, Yes we can, because
- 55:15we live in a capitalist healthscape. Yes, I can't la depressed to you
- 55:21guys, because human beings wearm and not meant to live like this. It
- 55:28was never supposed to be like this. We have done this to ourselves.
- 55:32Certainly. Does that make it any less real? No, it does not.
- 55:38It sure doesn't. So Anyway, I appreciated that Zoro falls prey to
- 55:45these things just as readily as his friends, and he has no armor against
- 55:51it whatsoever. It does seem to wear off fairly quickly because we cut to
- 55:57them renewed and yell at the ghosts. Basically all of them are like enraged
- 56:04at how the ghosts made them feel, and they have a vendetta. Now.
- 56:08Sangi is yelling at Zoro about how he's gonna call him dog food for
- 56:16now on and then says, wait, wait, sorry, you said you
- 56:21weren't even good enough to be dog food, and then start cracking up,
- 56:24and Zoro is very annoyed. I can't lie, though, Zoro is such
- 56:30a like cool customer all the time that I really do appreciate them having something
- 56:35to laugh at about him, you know. So we go back to our
- 56:44friends in the cast. Oh my god, no, wait, hold on.
- 56:46Before we go back, we come across this weird graveyard and Lufy sees
- 56:53a zombie climbing up out of the graveyard. And you guys, what does
- 57:01this man do? He walks over to the zombie with a kind of like
- 57:15expression on his face, like when if you were to go somewhere and see
- 57:21a picture frame crooked on the wall. There's no fear, there's no real
- 57:27sense of wonder about it. It's more just a kind of like, huh,
- 57:34let me just fix that real quick. And he walks up to this
- 57:37zombie and just begins to shove him back into his grave, which is truly
- 57:47the number one, bar none, best reaction to seeing a zombie I have
- 57:54ever heard of in my life. I can't stress to you guys enough how
- 58:02my mind was blown by this reaction. If you had given me a little
- 58:08like a pad and paper and said, write down ten reactions, you could
- 58:15imagine Lufy having to a zombie. This wouldn't have been on there at all.
- 58:20It would not have entered my mind as a possibility. It simply wouldn't
- 58:24be anywhere in my radar. I am so delighted by this. I really
- 58:31want it to be like a gift, him seeing it and walking over and
- 58:37trying to shove it back into its grave. I will never not love this.
- 58:42This is just the best moment. It is just perfect. It's so
- 58:46good. So then the zombie yells at him not to put him back in
- 58:52the ground, jackass. Which is I think the first time that we've heard
- 58:57the zombies talk. No, no we didn't, because they they talked about
- 59:00how the fire was really like dangerous and irresponsible. So yeah, we've heard
- 59:04them talk before. I forgot, So he leaps up, and when he
- 59:07leaps up, it results in like a bunch of other zombies coming up out
- 59:12of their graves in these sort of superhero poses. They're flying through the air,
- 59:16they're doing kicks and these leaps and everything, and Sangi says, like
- 59:22our zombies normally this like active, and they start coming for our crew,
- 59:31which, of course, the reaction that Nami and us Up and Chopper head
- 59:37is very different to the reaction that our friends here are having. They are
- 59:43up for it. They are very excited to fight these zombies and they make
- 59:49pretty quick work of them. It's not a problem, and just relish this
- 59:53fight all about it. So okay, that fight is happening. And then
- 1:00:04we go back to the castle and Nami, Usup and Chopper have stumbled across
- 1:00:10the doorway to the mysterious laboratory and they see doctor Hogback and he is down
- 1:00:20there by a table and he is talking about creating a marionette. And it's
- 1:00:27this dude that's like laying on the table that he's like stitching together. He's
- 1:00:30doing something with him, obviously, like trying to bring him to life.
- 1:00:34But I don't know how this is different from the many other things that he's
- 1:00:37brought to life. And Victoria is there saying, I hope the stupid thing
- 1:00:45blows up and burns your face off with no change of expression. She says
- 1:00:49that she brought him some food, and then she dumps this bag it's like
- 1:00:55a ziploc baggie of spaghetti soup like onto the table, which later in the
- 1:01:01background, when our friends are talking in the foreground, you can hear Hogback
- 1:01:07telling her not to worry. He'll just slurp it off the table as long
- 1:01:14as it's not on the floor. It's fair game basically, which was truly
- 1:01:19an inspired little bit of business to be happening in the background. But yeah,
- 1:01:23so our friends are watching this and they're trying to figure out like what
- 1:01:27the deal is with this woman Victoria having been brought back, and what it
- 1:01:32is that he is attempting to do. And as they're watching, thinking like,
- 1:01:39well, maybe we can find our way out of here from here,
- 1:01:45they hear footsteps behind them and they turn around and there is that weird skeleton
- 1:01:54ish sort of figure and he makes the same sort of laugh that Brooke made.
- 1:02:05It's very, very similar, and of course he has in some ways
- 1:02:08the same appearance that Brooke had, but Chopper is the one who's like,
- 1:02:14well, that's definitely not Brooke though, right, And this dude is clearly
- 1:02:21here, as he puts it to like shepherd them back to where they're supposed
- 1:02:24to be. But there's something about his like real stillness and his lack of
- 1:02:31rush that's very intimidating. I have a feeling this is going to be a
- 1:02:36difficult customer to handle. But he has hair and he's got a little bit
- 1:02:45of skin, I think, so he's not entirely a skeleton. And that's
- 1:02:52the end of the episode. Camera pulls out. We get to see the
- 1:02:54exterior of this big, weird castle, and that is it. So I'm
- 1:03:01going to wrap up, but thank you guys so much for hanging out with
- 1:03:05me. Appreciate you all a lot. Appreciate you also bearing with me being
- 1:03:08late. And until next time to the Loom. Motherfucker's That was an Unspoiled
- 1:03:45Network podcast.
