- 0:00Speaker 1: A Supreme Court ruling this week cleared the way for
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Trump administration to end Temporary protected status for Haitians
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Syrians, leaving thousands of refugees suddenly without legal immigration status.
- 0:12Speaker 1: One of the states that could face the biggest impact
- 0:14Speaker 1: is Ohio, where more than ten thousand Haitian migrants have settled.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The state's Republican governor, Mike DeWine, has called the move
- 0:21Speaker 1: quote a mistake. For more on the ruling and what
- 0:23Speaker 1: it means for communities in his state. I am joined
- 0:26Speaker 1: now by Governor Mike DeWine. Governor, welcome back to the
- 0:28Speaker 1: News Hour. Thanks for joining us with me back.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 0:31Speaker 1: As you know, revoking TPS is a big part of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. A court now says they
- 0:37Speaker 1: do have the authority to do that. Why do you
- 0:40Speaker 1: think that's a mistake.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I think the policy's wrong. The policy is wrong.
- 0:48Speaker 3: What I'm seeing specifically in Springfield and in Ohio. You
- 0:52Speaker 3: talked about a number of Patians who have come in.
- 0:55Speaker 3: You're seeing in Springfield a city that is coming back.
- 0:59Speaker 3: It's been coming back for the last few years, and frankly,
- 1:01Speaker 3: one of the reasons that's come back is because of
- 1:04Speaker 3: the Haitians who have been there to fill jobs that
- 1:07Speaker 3: were simply not being filled at all. And that's what
- 1:10Speaker 3: the employers will tell you. That's what the mayor. The
- 1:13Speaker 3: mayor issued another statement yesterday, and he's consistently said that
- 1:18Speaker 3: these Haitians are buying homes, they're opening businesses, they're working,
- 1:25Speaker 3: and they're trying to you know, some of them raise
- 1:27Speaker 3: their family there. They're contributing to the community. That's what
- 1:31Speaker 3: the mayor of Springfield is saying. And my observation is
- 1:35Speaker 3: he's absolutely right. So when all these individuals who are
- 1:40Speaker 3: there with TPS, now not all the Haitians, some of
- 1:43Speaker 3: them have other legal status, but a significant number of
- 1:47Speaker 3: them are under the TPS, which of course means with.
- 1:52Speaker 2: This ruling.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Of course, now and I don't look, I don't argue
- 1:55Speaker 3: with the Supreme Court decision. They were interpreting a statute
- 1:58Speaker 3: it was written by Congress, which basically says that the
- 2:04Speaker 3: courts cannot interfere with that decision that a designation such
- 2:08Speaker 3: as the administration made. My point is about policy, and
- 2:12Speaker 3: I've consistently said this, this is bad for Ohio, this
- 2:14Speaker 3: is a job killer for Ohio. It's a job killer
- 2:17Speaker 3: for Springfield. It's not good for a state.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Can I put to you, Governor, what we've heard from
- 2:23Speaker 1: the administration on this, which is something we heard Stephen
- 2:25Speaker 1: Miller of the White House say yesterday when asked about
- 2:28Speaker 1: whether or not it is safe for Haitians to go
- 2:30Speaker 1: back to Haiti. Here's what he said.
- 2:34Speaker 4: The fact that there might be pockets of Haiti with
- 2:37Speaker 4: his higher crime rates. Guess what, There's pockets of Chicago
- 2:40Speaker 4: with crime rates just as high. Right, There's pockets of
- 2:45Speaker 4: cities like Saint Louis with crime just as high, pockets
- 2:48Speaker 4: of Los Angeles crime just as high. It has never
- 2:50Speaker 4: been the case that having communities that have high crime
- 2:53Speaker 4: rates is a basis for a silent never has been,
- 2:56Speaker 4: it never will be.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So Covenor of the White House says it's safe for
- 2:59Speaker 1: Haitie to go back, and they also say this was
- 3:01Speaker 1: meant to be a temporary status. It's in the name,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and it's been in some cases extended for years and years.
- 3:08Speaker 1: What's your response to what they're saying.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Well, to say it's safe to go to Haiti as absurd,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and to say compare it to Chicago, you know, I
- 3:17Speaker 3: think it doesn't make any sense at all. Look, I
- 3:21Speaker 3: have a lot of contacts in Haiti. We work with
- 3:23Speaker 3: people in Haiti. We have a school down there, my
- 3:27Speaker 3: wife and I do, and you know, we've traveled there
- 3:32Speaker 3: twenty twenty five times and we have a lot of
- 3:35Speaker 3: contact there. It is worse today in Haiti than it's
- 3:38Speaker 3: ever been. It's never was very good. The only time, frankly,
- 3:42Speaker 3: it was good is when the US Marines were down
- 3:44Speaker 3: there and they did a phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal job. But
- 3:48Speaker 3: the situation is just absolutely terrible. People are killed every
- 3:53Speaker 3: single day. The gang's run basically run a good part
- 3:58Speaker 3: of the country. And we're talking now in Port of Prince,
- 4:01Speaker 3: we're talking about the capitol. You cannot fly into Port
- 4:05Speaker 3: a Prince with US carrier because US carrier.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Will not go into Port of Prince.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Why because the gangs shoot at the planes when they
- 4:14Speaker 3: come in.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Now, it's a horrible, horrible situation.
- 4:18Speaker 3: So nobody who knows anything about Haiti can say that
- 4:21Speaker 3: the situation is improved.
- 4:23Speaker 2: In fact, it's gotten a lot worse.
- 4:25Speaker 3: A good evidence of that is, you know, the Haitians
- 4:27Speaker 3: who I have talked to, who knew that they would
- 4:31Speaker 3: have to leave or thought they might have to leave.
- 4:33Speaker 3: There wasn't anybody I've talked to they said they were
- 4:35Speaker 3: going back to Haiti. They're going to try to find
- 4:37Speaker 3: any place else to go to where they can work
- 4:40Speaker 3: and support their family. But they're not going back there.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Governor, if I can ask you, is well you mentioned
- 4:45Speaker 1: the mayor in Springfield. My colleague William Brangham, was on
- 4:48Speaker 1: the ground there a little over a year ago speaking
- 4:50Speaker 1: to folks in the community. He met with Haitians who
- 4:52Speaker 1: had settled there, He talked to some companies. He said
- 4:55Speaker 1: they were very happy to have people fill the jobs
- 4:57Speaker 1: and to fill communities that had been somewhat abandoned. But
- 5:01Speaker 1: the mayor also said at the time that services were
- 5:04Speaker 1: being taxed right, people needed some support language translation services
- 5:09Speaker 1: in the schools and the hospitals and the clinics, and
- 5:11Speaker 1: he said it was stretching resources. So what's the balance
- 5:15Speaker 1: there to you.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Well, if that's that's true, it was a big influx
- 5:20Speaker 3: within a relatively short period of time, and we worked
- 5:23Speaker 3: with the mayor to try to try to help them.
- 5:25Speaker 3: So certainly, you know schools have Haitian children in there,
- 5:29Speaker 3: and you know that is additional cost if they don't
- 5:33Speaker 3: speak the language. But the interesting thing about you know,
- 5:37Speaker 3: the employers, despite the fact that there was a language barrier,
- 5:40Speaker 3: despite the fact there was a culture barrier, employers were
- 5:43Speaker 3: hiring them, and they were hiring them because they had
- 5:45Speaker 3: jobs to fill. And there's a multiplier effect. Some of
- 5:49Speaker 3: these companies told me we were able to put on
- 5:51Speaker 3: a second shift because of the Haitians, you know. Some
- 5:54Speaker 3: of them told me that we're able to take on
- 5:56Speaker 3: bigger projects, sell more goods, whatever it is that they
- 6:00Speaker 3: were selling. That has a multiplier effect in the economy.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Because of that economic activity, other people will get jobs
- 6:08Speaker 3: because of that. So, yes, it is a challenge that
- 6:13Speaker 3: the City of Springfield has taken on.
- 6:15Speaker 2: They've done a very very good job.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But I think if you ask the business people, if
- 6:21Speaker 3: you ask the mayor, you know what is going to happen.
- 6:24Speaker 3: The answer is when these individuals who no longer have
- 6:27Speaker 3: TPS status, When they don't have TPS status, they cannot
- 6:30Speaker 3: be employed. So you know, they're going to be unemployed.
- 6:34Speaker 3: And many of them have already left some of them,
- 6:37Speaker 3: you know, the rest of them will have to leave
- 6:40Speaker 3: at some point and try to find some country where
- 6:42Speaker 3: they can actually work. I mean, the big picture for
- 6:45Speaker 3: Ohio is this, we are a red hot state. We
- 6:48Speaker 3: are bringing in companies all the time to Ohio. The
- 6:51Speaker 3: real question today is do we have the people to
- 6:54Speaker 3: fill that. So we put a great deal of effort
- 6:56Speaker 3: on education, on job trading, We've put a great deal
- 6:59Speaker 3: of effort on career tech, as well as focusing on
- 7:03Speaker 3: colleges because they need all of the above. But without
- 7:08Speaker 3: immigrants coming in, it's gonna be hard. It's gonna be
- 7:12Speaker 3: harder for us to fill these jobs. If you look
- 7:14Speaker 3: at the increase in population in Ohio and we are
- 7:17Speaker 3: now going up for the first time in a number
- 7:19Speaker 3: of years. If you look at that, probably three fourths
- 7:23Speaker 3: of that is a direct result of immigrants.
- 7:26Speaker 2: If you look at well.
- 7:29Speaker 1: There's so much more to talk about around this. No,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I really appreciate your time, and I hope you'll come
- 7:33Speaker 1: back and join us as we follow the impact. We'll
- 7:35Speaker 1: have to leave it there for now. That is Republican
- 7:37Speaker 1: Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio joining us tonight. Thank you, sir.
