Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / DRAFT PREVIEW: What players could Angels be targeting in the first round?
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I am Mike D.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Giovanna, former Early Times Baseball writer and host of the show,
- 0:17Speaker 1: joined by my regular co host Mark Trumbo, the former
- 0:19Speaker 1: Angel slugger Mark Hew.
- 0:21Speaker 2: You doing.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We got a busy weekend ahead of us, A lot
- 0:23Speaker 1: going on in the game.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How you doing today? A stoic.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Stoic as usual. The HT fans have come to know
- 0:32Speaker 1: and love your stoicism.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I love it. That is a compliment or it's somewhere
- 0:37Speaker 2: in between.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Well, it depends what comes after the stoicism. I think
- 0:41Speaker 1: if it's a good, you know, one liner or a singer,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I think it's great.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Okay, I'll take it all right.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hey, uh, We're gonna have a little Angels Major League
- 0:51Speaker 1: or an amateur draft preview. The draft starts tomorrow Saturday.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I think it's a first and first through fifth if
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken. And the Angels have the twelfth overall pick,
- 1:04Speaker 1: so not extremely high, but a pretty high first round pick,
- 1:08Speaker 1: a really big pick for them this year. So we'll
- 1:10Speaker 1: get into that in a little bit. First, we want
- 1:12Speaker 1: to wrap up this Ranger series. Man, the Angels just
- 1:16Speaker 1: thrash the Rangers twelve thirteen to one. On Wednesday Night,
- 1:21Speaker 1: Joe Adell hits two home runs, Mike Trout, in his
- 1:24Speaker 1: first game back off the injured list, hits a homer,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and we finally had a daily Dinner pick come true.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So credit to me for that and Von Grissom, who
- 1:38Speaker 1: we talked about as a guy who had really been struggling.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Four hits in four RBIs Neto three hits, two doubles.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And then Thursday night, Wow Angels score was it? Five
- 1:50Speaker 1: runs in the seventh to tie the game six sixth
- 1:52Speaker 1: Then they end up losing in the ninth on a
- 1:54Speaker 1: why at Langford walkoff hit, great comeback, empty feeling what?
- 2:01Speaker 1: I can't imagine?
- 2:02Speaker 2: What's that? What that is like? Mark?
- 2:04Speaker 1: I'm sure you've had games like that where you expend
- 2:07Speaker 1: all that energy the mount a really impressive comeback and
- 2:11Speaker 1: then to lose. Is that a little more demoralizing for
- 2:14Speaker 1: a player or do they all sort of count the
- 2:16Speaker 1: same mentally?
- 2:19Speaker 3: With this team, I think they feel pretty good about
- 2:22Speaker 3: these little comebacks they have. Not sure that it stings
- 2:26Speaker 3: that much at this point. I think that they kind
- 2:31Speaker 3: of pride themselves on coming back, but it's usually just
- 2:34Speaker 3: a little bit short, which was the case here Reds.
- 2:39Speaker 3: That was not a great start for him. He got well,
- 2:43Speaker 3: they whacked him when he when he made pitches that
- 2:45Speaker 3: over the middle of the plate is fastball in particular,
- 2:48Speaker 3: although it grated out fairly well. And the stuff plus,
- 2:51Speaker 3: which is we're still trying to figure out what you know,
- 2:54Speaker 3: things actually mean to the naked eye. I just seem
- 2:57Speaker 3: like he was missing right down the pipe too often
- 3:01Speaker 3: and the Rangers were ready to hit it. Probably a
- 3:04Speaker 3: more of a fastball oriented hitting team, and they punished
- 3:09Speaker 3: him so didn't get away with much. The Angels did
- 3:12Speaker 3: come back. But one thing I wanted to ask you
- 3:15Speaker 3: do you do you think fifteen strikeouts is a bit
- 3:18Speaker 3: too many?
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yes, as always, I mean this is what we saw
- 3:22Speaker 1: last year, and I think I didn't look for the
- 3:26Speaker 1: latest numbers. I'm pretty sure they still lead the major
- 3:28Speaker 1: leagues and strikeouts. They do seem to have games where
- 3:31Speaker 1: they are not as strikeout prone. I don't know if
- 3:33Speaker 1: that's purely a function of the opposing pitcher. Now, Nathan Eovaldi,
- 3:38Speaker 1: as we know, can strike out.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah. I wanted the guys Raoul Ignacio.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Always, so it's imperative to know who the starting pitcher is, so.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Well, they did say it's a pretty good pitcher. Yeah,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and Detmer's four innings pitch seven, hits, three home runs,
- 3:58Speaker 1: his stock trade market dropping a little bit. We of course,
- 4:02Speaker 1: still don't know what the Angels intend to do going
- 4:05Speaker 1: into the deadline August third. He's had a couple of
- 4:08Speaker 1: stars lately where he's been hit around a bit. And
- 4:12Speaker 1: it's interesting because the Tigers are making a run. They're
- 4:15Speaker 1: surging right now, so everyone thought Trek Scuba was going
- 4:18Speaker 1: to be the number one, you know, obvious target pitching
- 4:22Speaker 1: wise on the trade market, and they may turn in
- 4:25Speaker 1: the sellings really before you know it. Debtmer's may be
- 4:28Speaker 1: one of the more attractive pieces. But is his stock
- 4:31Speaker 1: starting to slip a little bit at this point?
- 4:35Speaker 2: It's hard to say.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I think that, like any player, getting traded in season
- 4:40Speaker 3: is not something that, at least in my experience, it's
- 4:43Speaker 3: very difficult, a lot of mental clutter now, the noise
- 4:47Speaker 3: around it. I don't think it is as big a deal,
- 4:49Speaker 3: but it can be a huge distraction for guys that
- 4:55Speaker 3: have never experienced that before. And I think this is
- 4:58Speaker 3: the first real time for for Reid that his name
- 5:01Speaker 3: is heavily in the mix. Fortunately for guys that are
- 5:05Speaker 3: on the Angels, there's not a ton of media that
- 5:08Speaker 3: are constantly badgering them, like you know, may happen on
- 5:12Speaker 3: other teams, but there are enough questions and enough you know,
- 5:16Speaker 3: national stories. He sees his name and you start to wonder,
- 5:19Speaker 3: you know, it's this could likely be me, especially with
- 5:22Speaker 3: the team not you know that another drop series and
- 5:25Speaker 3: the Rangers, I guess they're in first place. But yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 3: the saggy al West continues like Boston to me look
- 5:35Speaker 3: way better than the Rangers. Now, maybe Boston caught him
- 5:40Speaker 3: at the right time or whatever. But the A's are
- 5:43Speaker 3: sinking fast and kind of on the tangent. But I
- 5:47Speaker 3: think Detmer's may be affected by some of this talk.
- 5:50Speaker 3: He would be the one to know best able to
- 5:51Speaker 3: answer that, But his last couple two or three are.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Nowhere near what he was doing.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I want to ask you one thing that really surprised
- 6:01Speaker 1: me about Thursday Night's game, Joe Adell two homers, one
- 6:06Speaker 1: of them was over just a bond a list Center
- 6:09Speaker 1: five RBIs the night before and Thursday night he's not
- 6:13Speaker 1: in the lineup. Now I understand Kurt Suzuki's reasoning, You know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: you you got three games on that turf in Texas.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's not as hot as it was because it's indoors,
- 6:23Speaker 1: which is great, but the turf can really take a
- 6:26Speaker 1: toll on your body. He wants to get him off
- 6:28Speaker 1: his feet. It was sort of a predetermined day off.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I understand that, But why not, DHM, Why do you
- 6:33Speaker 1: have Horesolaier dhing in back and cleanup against a tough
- 6:38Speaker 1: writing you know, so he's gonna have as much trouble.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm guessing with Euvaldias, maybe Adele would, but man, don't
- 6:45Speaker 1: you want to play the hot hand there?
- 6:48Speaker 3: I guess it was predetermined, so they stuck with whatever
- 6:51Speaker 3: script they had come up with. But I don't understand
- 6:54Speaker 3: why you need a day off.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:57Speaker 3: It's not what I experienced as as not really that old.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I don't Yeah, he don't think he needs a day off,
- 7:04Speaker 3: To be honest with you, I don't think I think
- 7:06Speaker 3: he's capable of playing all three games on that field.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And what about the players that are on the Rangers
- 7:12Speaker 3: that play after their games on the field, You know,
- 7:16Speaker 3: they're very used to it. And Joe with a hot
- 7:19Speaker 3: dat I certainly would have wanted him in there. Jorge
- 7:21Speaker 3: takes his big swings, but over the last thirty games,
- 7:26Speaker 3: the production is well, it's not too much a lot
- 7:29Speaker 3: of k's and especially when the game's on the line,
- 7:34Speaker 3: he's coming up empty more often than not.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and Adele, we should note, came off the bench
- 7:39Speaker 1: Thursday night and lined a game tying single to left
- 7:43Speaker 1: center in that seventh inning. And then he came up
- 7:46Speaker 1: I think it was in the ninth and just blistered
- 7:49Speaker 1: a ball I think with two on, which would have
- 7:51Speaker 1: been the go ahead runs and right to the well.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Centerfielder had to go back on it, but that ball
- 7:57Speaker 1: was rocked. As Gooby said on the on the broadcast,
- 8:01Speaker 1: last thing with a Rangers series might trout his back.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I know it's only two games, but what'd you think
- 8:07Speaker 1: of his swing and and how he looked physically to you?
- 8:11Speaker 1: And you know he mentioned he wants to play center
- 8:14Speaker 1: field as much as as he's been playing. I would
- 8:17Speaker 1: assume coming off a hand, you know, a leg injury,
- 8:20Speaker 1: they would want to pace him some, but he's he
- 8:23Speaker 1: seems adamant on playing as much as he can. Defensively,
- 8:28Speaker 1: what do you think, how do he look to you.
- 8:31Speaker 1: First of all, I.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Thought you looked physically fine. I think with any kind
- 8:36Speaker 3: of layoff, I don't care. I mean, even the length
- 8:38Speaker 3: of the All Star break is enough to throw most
- 8:41Speaker 3: mere mortals. Timing off, I know, my speaking for myself,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you wanted. I wanted to stay sharp anymore than you know.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Two days off starts to feel like you've lost it
- 8:52Speaker 3: a little bit. And a lot of the guys these
- 8:55Speaker 3: days don't go on rehab assignments, don't take any at bats,
- 8:59Speaker 3: don't see any live pit. Now they may have some
- 9:00Speaker 3: of these machines and stuff that are way better able
- 9:03Speaker 3: to replicate the in game stuff than when I was playing,
- 9:07Speaker 3: But I still I'm not surprised anytime somebody comes back
- 9:11Speaker 3: and scuffles until they get their feet under them.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, how do you think you would have hit off
- 9:16Speaker 1: that trajet machine?
- 9:18Speaker 4: Mark?
- 9:18Speaker 2: What do you just crushed?
- 9:20Speaker 3: I hate most every pitching machine. It was never my
- 9:24Speaker 3: thing at all. I'd like to be able to time
- 9:27Speaker 3: up an arm I personally, I don't. Probably would have
- 9:30Speaker 3: got my doors blown off, But who knows?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Too late, too little, too late?
- 9:38Speaker 3: You know, we can dream, but I had enough experiences
- 9:41Speaker 3: that that's not going to keep me up at night.
- 9:44Speaker 1: All right, We're going to take a quick break for
- 9:45Speaker 1: a word from our sponsors, and when we come back,
- 9:47Speaker 1: we'll get right into this draft preview for the Angels.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So we'll be right back with more Halo Territory.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Cap.
- 9:56Speaker 5: I've been looking for the best deals for the All
- 9:58Speaker 5: Star Game tickets and fit, where are you going to
- 10:01Speaker 5: get some tickets from?
- 10:02Speaker 4: I'm going straight out to Rife Field. If Harper and
- 10:05Speaker 4: Swarber both joined the home run derby, I want to
- 10:07Speaker 4: be catching the hometown guys hating them. So I'm going
- 10:09Speaker 4: out to the Rife Field kind of where I think
- 10:11Speaker 4: I could get the best chance of catching one of
- 10:12Speaker 4: those home runs.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Maybe in the second deck. You can go on the
- 10:16Speaker 5: app and you can look to see what your view
- 10:17Speaker 5: is gonna because the boys are going to be launching

- 10:51Speaker 5: Thank you to Sea Geek and we'll see you at
- 10:53Speaker 5: the game.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumble and
- 10:58Speaker 1: Mike d Giavonna. Well, let's get into the draft. Angels
- 11:02Speaker 1: have the twelfth overall pick. That pick has a slot
- 11:07Speaker 1: value of five point eight nine million for the first round.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Still crazy to hear those numbers. Their second overall pick
- 11:15Speaker 1: is at two point two to two million. Their overall
- 11:19Speaker 1: draft pool is zero point seventy five million, So twelfth
- 11:25Speaker 1: overall pick. Let's sort of start with a thirty thousand
- 11:29Speaker 1: foot view. Keith Law, the athletic prospects expert. This is
- 11:36Speaker 1: what he had to say about the overall draft this week.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Quote.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It's not a great class, unfortunately, and after the top
- 11:44Speaker 1: five or so players it falls off quickly. There's very
- 11:48Speaker 1: little high end pitching, and what exists all has questions.
- 11:53Speaker 1: While a group of college position players that look promising
- 11:56Speaker 1: coming into the year didn't quite pan out, although I
- 11:58Speaker 1: think there will be a lot of you to be
- 12:00Speaker 1: found in that group towards the end of the first round. Now,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I know that's a real general perspective, but man, that
- 12:09Speaker 1: doesn't sound good for a team of the twelfth overall pick.
- 12:11Speaker 1: What do you think when you read that Mark Keith
- 12:16Speaker 1: has a lot of experience doing this? Keith has you know,
- 12:20Speaker 1: he's got a lot of opinions generally, and not all
- 12:23Speaker 1: of them are on the you know, what did you.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Say last episode?
- 12:27Speaker 3: Or I'm awfully chipper or class Sure, so I think
- 12:33Speaker 3: Keith can air on the side of negativity. Yeah, negativity.
- 12:38Speaker 3: So in this case, I'm not too surprised. I'm sure
- 12:42Speaker 3: he's not been right all the time, but he is,
- 12:47Speaker 3: you know, the one of the absolute go tos, and
- 12:50Speaker 3: he gets fed a lot of information, spends a lot
- 12:52Speaker 3: of time doing this. So in this case, I would
- 12:57Speaker 3: say that there's probably truth to this. But if the Angels,
- 13:02Speaker 3: I don't know. The top three teams are also in
- 13:07Speaker 3: somewhat of a conundrum personally. I you know, a guy
- 13:11Speaker 3: like Rock Chilowski was a shoe in one one his
- 13:14Speaker 3: swing towards the end of the season, especially like the
- 13:18Speaker 3: regionals and Super Regional the playoffs for college. I saw
- 13:22Speaker 3: a swing that didn't resemble the one that I had
- 13:24Speaker 3: really liked previously. Really inside out, seemed like kind of
- 13:28Speaker 3: a chicken wing. And I think that other teams we're
- 13:32Speaker 3: seeing that too, So there's been some shuffling. I don't
- 13:35Speaker 3: know if we have the order or projected order that
- 13:40Speaker 3: we can show at some point. But my guy von Lackey,
- 13:43Speaker 3: and I say my guy, but I identified why it was
- 13:46Speaker 3: a while back.
- 13:47Speaker 1: No, I was you called that one in spring training.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'll give you credit for sure.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Von Lackey and Flora. The picture out of Santa Barbara
- 13:55Speaker 3: are both their stock is elevated, so I don't think
- 13:59Speaker 3: they're in play anymore. And then Garcia, the other guy,
- 14:02Speaker 3: the outfielder I picked. His name still gets mentioned a bit,
- 14:04Speaker 3: but he seems to have fallen off in maybe a
- 14:07Speaker 3: late first round type now. So I will probably go
- 14:10Speaker 3: over three with my early predictions, except two of them
- 14:14Speaker 3: turned out to have very nice seasons. Yeah, for sure.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Well, let's to get you familiar with some of the
- 14:19Speaker 1: names we're going to be talking about, at least for
- 14:21Speaker 1: you guys watching on YouTube. This was MLB dot COM's
- 14:25Speaker 1: top amateur prospects rankings not too long ago. As you said,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Rock Cholowski, I think seems to be the number one
- 14:34Speaker 1: consensus number one pick now. Grady Emerson von Lackey from
- 14:39Speaker 1: Georgia Tech, Jackson Flora, UC Santa Barbara Pitcher, Drew Burress,
- 14:45Speaker 1: a Georgia Tech outfielder, Geo Rojas, a left hander from
- 14:48Speaker 1: Florida in high school, another big name, Justin Lebron very
- 14:52Speaker 1: much linked with the Angels, a college shortstop Alabama, Tyler Bell,
- 14:58Speaker 1: another shortstop from Kentucky, And Derek curry El, an outfielder
- 15:03Speaker 1: from LSU who, as like Lebron, has been linked with
- 15:08Speaker 1: the Angels. So there are a lot of mock drafts,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and uh, it's hard to put a lot of stock
- 15:13Speaker 1: into these mock drafts because a lot of you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: a guy could go at number three or maybe be
- 15:21Speaker 1: at number six who you didn't expect, and the whole
- 15:24Speaker 1: order changes. It's just a real crap shoot with baseball
- 15:28Speaker 1: more so than I think the other two major sports,
- 15:32Speaker 1: so as far as you know, for what they're worth.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Keith Law and his mock draft as of two days ago,
- 15:39Speaker 1: had the Angels taking the LSU outfielder Derek CURRYL Mark
- 15:43Speaker 1: informs me that he might have changed that this morning.
- 15:47Speaker 3: It's now Liam Peterson. But yeah, I like, let's go
- 15:51Speaker 3: with the one, the second to.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Last previous one. Okay, I prefer that. Yeah.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Baseball America and Kylie McDaniel of ESPN had the Angels
- 16:00Speaker 1: taking the Alabama shortstop Justin Lebron and fangrafts. They do
- 16:05Speaker 1: a mock draft too. Now they have the Angels taking
- 16:10Speaker 1: oh Mason Edwards, the USC left hander. So interesting, Let's
- 16:15Speaker 1: dive in a little more, at least on these guys.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Derek curryel seems to have more of a hit over
- 16:21Speaker 1: power tool, very high potential out of high school, but
- 16:29Speaker 1: he didn't. He didn't sign, goes to LSU and helps
- 16:34Speaker 1: them to the College Rule Series title. A lean, left
- 16:37Speaker 1: handed hitter with excellent back to ball skills, he uses
- 16:41Speaker 1: a fluid stroke and mature approach to spray hard line
- 16:44Speaker 1: drives all over the field. His swing is somewhat flat,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and he may not have more than average strength or
- 16:50Speaker 1: bat speed, so he might not deliver more than twelve
- 16:52Speaker 1: to fifteen homers per season. He resembles Christian Yelich at
- 16:56Speaker 1: the same age. Those scouts are skeptical that Kurio can
- 16:59Speaker 1: match the power gains Yellow Yellows made early in his career. Now,
- 17:05Speaker 1: when I read that report, Mark the one guy that
- 17:07Speaker 1: jumped into my head, especially with the flat bat as
- 17:11Speaker 1: a lefty, right this guy hits left handed, correct? Was
- 17:15Speaker 1: Darreners said? Darreners said that very much described as a
- 17:18Speaker 1: flat bat lefty. And I that was my first year
- 17:21Speaker 1: on the beat in ninety five when they picked him
- 17:22Speaker 1: one first overall, and that's the first time I heard
- 17:26Speaker 1: that term.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Is that? Is that? Is that?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Is that a good thing at this stage of his career?
- 17:32Speaker 1: Or the way the game has changed and and veered
- 17:36Speaker 1: toward power and launch angles? Is that gonna made me
- 17:39Speaker 1: haunt him a little bit?
- 17:41Speaker 2: This is a great thing.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I saw this young man what he was at Orange
- 17:46Speaker 3: Lutheran playing right Heart Park. I didn't know who he
- 17:50Speaker 3: was at the time. I was there to see opposing
- 17:53Speaker 3: player that was playing Orange Lutheran and I was, you
- 17:57Speaker 3: can't help, but you know, notice some talent out there
- 18:00Speaker 3: or is it from a very highly ranked program? And
- 18:02Speaker 3: I said, hey, remember that kid is in center field.
- 18:05Speaker 3: He's a ballplayer. I didn't know the name, didn't know
- 18:08Speaker 3: anything about him just said, you know, I like what
- 18:11Speaker 3: I see. That's he's got the look and preparing for this.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Looking at this guy Curry l and I'm like Lsu
- 18:19Speaker 3: probably from who knows where, Texas, Louisiana, Florida. Oh wait, no,
- 18:25Speaker 3: I've actually seen this guy in person and I liked
- 18:27Speaker 3: him then. I like him even more now. I think
- 18:29Speaker 3: the earthst Dead comp is way better. The Yellow Yellows
- 18:32Speaker 3: is a much taller guy. You know, he's eyed eye
- 18:36Speaker 3: with me and very lanky, So I wouldn't. I don't
- 18:40Speaker 3: know where that comp really really came from. I think
- 18:43Speaker 3: that this guy is hard nosed. He's a human highlight
- 18:47Speaker 3: reel in center field. Excellent defense, and I the flat swing.
- 18:53Speaker 3: If the flat swing is simply controlling the barrel and
- 18:57Speaker 3: not having a droopy, you know, cage bomb swing, sign
- 19:02Speaker 3: me up. This guy can hit. He can use the
- 19:04Speaker 3: whole field. I see the potential to hit. Yeah, fifteen
- 19:09Speaker 3: twenty home runs. It's talked about as if that's that's
- 19:12Speaker 3: just not cutting it anymore.
- 19:14Speaker 2: But for.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I guess a guy like Pete crow Armstrong is the
- 19:21Speaker 3: you know, the current model of you know, he saves
- 19:23Speaker 3: a million runs on defense, he does hit homers, So
- 19:28Speaker 3: you know, with these balls, well maybe at some point
- 19:30Speaker 3: get into why you know, maybe more home runs again,
- 19:33Speaker 3: more offensive, but I wouldn't worry about that. I think
- 19:36Speaker 3: that the Angels fans would love to have this guy.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I think the Angels would love to have this guy
- 19:41Speaker 3: if he's there. I don't know if he will be,
- 19:43Speaker 3: but he'd probably be number one on my list.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Wow.

- 20:54Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory. With Mark Trumbo and
- 20:57Speaker 1: Mike Digivano On the other guy, the Angels have been
- 21:00Speaker 1: heavily linked to her too. Is Justin Lebron, the Alabama shortstop,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and let's read a little bit more about him. The
- 21:10Speaker 1: only knock on Lebron is a tendency to chase pitches
- 21:12Speaker 1: out of the zone, especially breaking balls. He made more
- 21:16Speaker 1: contact as a junior, but also about just two twenty
- 21:18Speaker 1: nine in the Southeastern Conference play as a junior, leading
- 21:21Speaker 1: to questions about his long term hitting ability. He has
- 21:24Speaker 1: added fifteen pounds and significant bat speed in college, giving
- 21:28Speaker 1: him well above average raw power from the right side
- 21:30Speaker 1: of the plate, and he also has a good feel
- 21:33Speaker 1: for driving balls in the air. Now, unlike Curriel, this
- 21:37Speaker 1: is more of a power over hit tool. Looks like
- 21:40Speaker 1: the speed is really good. They give my seventy grade
- 21:43Speaker 1: here arm very good. Defense looks good, Mark, what have
- 21:48Speaker 1: you heard about Justin Lebron And this is a guy
- 21:51Speaker 1: who might be available? I think when the Angels are picking.
- 21:55Speaker 2: To twenty nine in conference a little low. He's a nice,
- 22:00Speaker 2: nice ballplayer. Nevertheless, you look at a guy and with
- 22:06Speaker 2: his makeup and his build, or at least you know
- 22:09Speaker 2: what his on field looks like, and you can easily
- 22:13Speaker 2: see a good big leaguer in there. I think the
- 22:15Speaker 2: instincts at shortstop looked very good. Tremendous athlete, natural bass stealer,
- 22:21Speaker 2: probably still a ton of bases for whoever chooses to
- 22:24Speaker 2: select him. The hitting in particular, I think that they
- 22:27Speaker 2: were quite accurate with what I saw watching as much
- 22:31Speaker 2: video as I could, and he seems to pull a
- 22:35Speaker 2: lot of pitches, especially balls that are on the black
- 22:39Speaker 2: or more away, and we've seen that a lot with
- 22:45Speaker 2: a team. Is the thing about drafting a guy with
- 22:49Speaker 2: played discipline issues and as someone who was never good
- 22:52Speaker 2: at it personally tried to get better at it, asked
- 22:58Speaker 2: everybody I could've talked to some of these things before
- 23:01Speaker 2: but it's a hard skill to learn. And if I
- 23:04Speaker 2: had a preference, and I was drafting high and picking
- 23:07Speaker 2: between multiple players, I would probably prefer someone that may
- 23:11Speaker 2: not have that issue.
- 23:12Speaker 3: But sometimes the tools. Seventy grade raw power is enormous.
- 23:17Speaker 3: That that can you know, you translate that to thirty
- 23:19Speaker 3: plus home runs. So if you combine that with excellent
- 23:23Speaker 3: defense and maybe you know about an average that that
- 23:28Speaker 3: a bit on the lower sides, a lot of teams
- 23:30Speaker 3: would still you know, take that. So he's not a
- 23:34Speaker 3: player without flaws, but apparently one that the Angels are
- 23:37Speaker 3: are in on. You know, we'll see, but there's there's
- 23:41Speaker 3: plenty of other good players as well.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark did not do Mark draft, but he broke
- 23:45Speaker 1: down his in doing his research, and I'm gonna let
- 23:49Speaker 1: him sort of take over the show from here on.
- 23:51Speaker 1: He he he brings. He breaks it down into guys
- 23:56Speaker 1: the Angels may have a realistic chance of drafting a
- 23:59Speaker 1: couple of long shots and a couple of wild cards,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and they're all pretty interesting. So Mark, why don't you.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Sort of take it over.
- 24:05Speaker 1: There's a couple of guys who you think will be
- 24:07Speaker 1: available in that twelve spot that you think the Angels
- 24:13Speaker 1: should go after. And one of them we just talked
- 24:15Speaker 1: about was Justin Lebron. The other is a pitch another
- 24:17Speaker 1: outfielder named Sawyer Strausnider from TCU.
- 24:21Speaker 2: What do you know about him?
- 24:23Speaker 3: A big guy, big left handed hitter, very athletic. I'll
- 24:26Speaker 3: try and stop he isn't the word athletic, but it's true.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I mean these there are a few guys that are
- 24:33Speaker 3: more I don't know, they're not skiffs, but that first
- 24:38Speaker 3: in the as apparently everyone likes to put them, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 3: elite that to ball skills, great play, discipline and maybe
- 24:47Speaker 3: lacking on the on the defensive side, and so some
- 24:49Speaker 3: teams don't mind that. I think with the way the
- 24:52Speaker 3: current game is, it's a fast game, it's an athletic game,
- 24:57Speaker 3: and the better teams that we've seen this year, I'll
- 25:00Speaker 3: the things that the one thing that they really have
- 25:01Speaker 3: in common, at least to me, is they play premium defense.
- 25:05Speaker 3: So I think a guy like Strasneider fits that mold.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He's got huge power and for an organization, you know,
- 25:14Speaker 3: we're taking best available player, and I think that's one
- 25:17Speaker 3: of the things that is somewhat hard to kind of
- 25:19Speaker 3: get away from. This organization. What are they really lacking
- 25:22Speaker 3: at the lower levels is power and you know power head.
- 25:25Speaker 3: This guy is, you know the definition of it. He's got.
- 25:30Speaker 3: One of the knocks on was a long swing, and
- 25:33Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of swings. I would have to
- 25:35Speaker 3: say I disagree. It look like a repeatable swing to me.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I think he had a slight performance dip this year
- 25:42Speaker 3: to start. The batting average was a little below three
- 25:44Speaker 3: hundred for college. That's that's a little late, but still
- 25:48Speaker 3: a very nice player and one that most definitely will
- 25:51Speaker 3: be available. I believe when they pick he was. Some
- 25:54Speaker 3: of these guys were way up there in the beginning
- 25:56Speaker 3: of the year high first round and then the you
- 25:58Speaker 3: know the names of here and vice versa. So he
- 26:02Speaker 3: made some sense to me. I got a couple of
- 26:05Speaker 3: long shots, if you.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah, geah, I was just gonna ask you about them.
- 26:07Speaker 1: These are guys who you never know. I mean, there
- 26:10Speaker 1: could be signability issues whatever. Tyler Bell, John John Mzilik,
- 26:17Speaker 1: as we said, sorry to rupt, has said they're going
- 26:20Speaker 1: to take the best available guy, no matter what. I
- 26:22Speaker 1: assume that means, you know, financially too. So if these guys.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Are available, they probably will not be disclaimer, but a
- 26:31Speaker 3: few of them, and I'll make it quick because you
- 26:33Speaker 3: know you don't want to keep watching on. But Tyler
- 26:35Speaker 3: Bell is a shortstop out of Kentucky. He's going to
- 26:38Speaker 3: need surgery on his non throwing shoulder. It's going to
- 26:40Speaker 3: sideline him for a few months. It shouldn't be a
- 26:42Speaker 3: big deal. He's the guy that at least for potentially
- 26:47Speaker 3: could fall to the Angels. I liked him the most.
- 26:51Speaker 3: He's a switch hitter, tremendous. I mean the ball the
- 26:54Speaker 3: old school, but the ball sounds loud off his bat.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Even watching you know on video, you can clearly he's
- 27:00Speaker 3: got the quick twitch, wrists, plays tremendous defense. Premium player.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Looks like an All star to me, somebody's really going
- 27:08Speaker 3: to enjoy him, probably not going to be the Angels.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Go Rojas is a high school left handed pitcher from Georgia.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Heavily linked to the Braves, and I can see why.
- 27:18Speaker 3: He's got a tremendous fastball, long loose action. He's not
- 27:23Speaker 3: quite the low three quarter sail type, but a little
- 27:27Speaker 3: bit like that. He seems to have a very repeatable
- 27:30Speaker 3: mechanical delivery, which is great, especially for a high school guy.
- 27:34Speaker 3: You're not gonna have to spend a inordinate amount of
- 27:37Speaker 3: time trying to polish anything up and the fastball explodes.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I hate to say Randy Johnson, but you know the
- 27:44Speaker 3: kind of the Randy Johnson release where it just it's
- 27:48Speaker 3: not as tall, but there are some similarities there. He's
- 27:52Speaker 3: got a nice breaking ball to compliment it, so he'd
- 27:54Speaker 3: be great. He probably again won't be there. And one
- 27:57Speaker 3: other guy is Buris. He's a very interesting player. Five
- 28:01Speaker 3: eight listed looks generous, really yeah, but I mean he's perplexing.
- 28:08Speaker 3: He's probably going to be picked before this too. Just
- 28:13Speaker 3: a tremendous ability to hit the ball in the air
- 28:16Speaker 3: and in a good way too. And he's always on
- 28:18Speaker 3: time for the fastball. I heard some comments he made
- 28:21Speaker 3: about it, but it's this compact package doesn't exactly look
- 28:26Speaker 3: the part. Where like Straschneider is a big, you know,
- 28:30Speaker 3: physical presence. I think Burris is a guy has probably
- 28:33Speaker 3: been underestimated his whole career, but he's got as much
- 28:36Speaker 3: power as anybody, maybe the most power in the draft.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Five eight plays a good enough center field. I don't
- 28:42Speaker 3: think he plays defense as well as Careell, but if
- 28:46Speaker 3: he's available. I think they'd absolutely take him there too.
- 28:50Speaker 3: He doesn't just pull the ball. He's got I saw
- 28:52Speaker 3: a line to line power legitimately right down the right
- 28:55Speaker 3: field line. So nice ballplayer long shots, you know. So
- 29:01Speaker 3: those guys will probably be taken before this.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Who do you like to some of your wild cards?
- 29:06Speaker 1: Some of these guys who could go anywhere in the
- 29:09Speaker 1: first round. Sounds like you just never know some of
- 29:11Speaker 1: these kids. Some teams may love them, some teams may
- 29:14Speaker 1: not even have them on their first round board.
- 29:16Speaker 2: What do you got there? I have a few names.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Cameron Fluky, right handed college pitcher East Carolina.
- 29:26Speaker 2: He's got a big.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Arm, and he likes to celebrate when he punches guys out.
- 29:30Speaker 3: He's a big, animated presence. But that's virtually all of
- 29:33Speaker 3: these guys now a little bit tough to totally disregard
- 29:38Speaker 3: as someone who's If you watch the show regularly, probably
- 29:43Speaker 3: know that it's.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Not my favorite thing.
- 29:44Speaker 3: But it is a thing, And from what I understand,
- 29:48Speaker 3: the scouts these days don't view it as negatively as
- 29:52Speaker 3: maybe I thought they did. A lot of it gets
- 29:54Speaker 3: cleaned up once you get into the pro ball system.
- 29:56Speaker 3: You're playing in one hundred and some degree heat. You've
- 30:00Speaker 3: got to go out there and put up numbers, so
- 30:03Speaker 3: there's not a lot of extra energy for the hooton
- 30:06Speaker 3: and hollering. Plus everyone's really good around you, you know,
- 30:08Speaker 3: always the big dog. But Fluga's got the stuff. You know,
- 30:12Speaker 3: he's got premium heat. There might be some injury concerns
- 30:15Speaker 3: with him and the makeup. As I said, you know,
- 30:19Speaker 3: somebody else can to figure that out. And then a
- 30:21Speaker 3: local kid is even more perplexing and is projected to
- 30:26Speaker 3: go quite high Jared grid Langer from Huntington Beach High School.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Apparently very intent on being a two way player, not
- 30:35Speaker 3: just a hypothetical. They I mean either heat his desire,
- 30:40Speaker 3: or his agent or some collection. But I think the
- 30:44Speaker 3: arm is better than the bat. He's seventeen years old,
- 30:47Speaker 3: so some of these things I'm trying to build in
- 30:50Speaker 3: some grace. Looks like he's still developing some coordination. Very lanky,
- 30:57Speaker 3: kind of loose.
- 31:01Speaker 1: As a seventeen year old.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they said the bats feed. It's not elite
- 31:05Speaker 3: kind of it's he looks like a guy that's still
- 31:09Speaker 3: maturing and he's very young, but he's could be a
- 31:13Speaker 3: guy taken possibly even before the Angels pick. I think
- 31:17Speaker 3: if you're an organization like the Padres do this a lot,
- 31:19Speaker 3: they'll take players that have huge projection. But maybe or
- 31:28Speaker 3: you know, James Woods, they traded them away. He's lighting
- 31:31Speaker 3: it up for the Nationals.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Now.
- 31:32Speaker 3: You know, very six seven, big guy in the previous drafts.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Probably gonna blank on the name, but Cruse school Craft.
- 31:43Speaker 3: He's six' ten or. So so The padres are one
- 31:45Speaker 3: team that would, be you, know for, me a natural
- 31:48Speaker 3: fit for a guy like this who has a very high.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Ceiling BUT i don't know what.
- 31:52Speaker 3: The floor is. Either it could be you, know any.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Anything so these are guys that. Whatever BUT i think
- 31:59Speaker 3: it probably may the most sense to Highlight Mason. Edwards
- 32:03Speaker 3: AND i don't know if you have any information on
- 32:06Speaker 3: him A, Usc.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah we do have a. Little i'm not. Sure
- 32:11Speaker 1: who sounds like to? Me fastball Fifty it sounds like
- 32:17Speaker 1: it's around ninety. Two sometimes touches ninety. Five, curveball great
- 32:21Speaker 1: of the, sixty change up fifty. Five in many, Ways
- 32:26Speaker 1: edward just fits the prototype of a college lefty with
- 32:28Speaker 1: a feel for. Pitching he has a solid three pitch
- 32:30Speaker 1: mix and knows how to use it. Effectively while his
- 32:33Speaker 1: fastball typically sits in the ninety one to ninety three
- 32:36Speaker 1: mile in our, range he can touch ninety. Five there
- 32:39Speaker 1: is some carry and darkness to his. Heater i'm not
- 32:42Speaker 1: sure what that. MEANS i know these scouts are always
- 32:44Speaker 1: trying to invent new. Terms Maybe mark can shed some
- 32:47Speaker 1: light on what that. Means he had a thirty percent
- 32:50Speaker 1: miss rate on the pitch in twenty twenty. Five he'll
- 32:53Speaker 1: throw a slurvy breaking ball around eighty and the curve
- 32:57Speaker 1: flashes as a plus pitch with excellent. SPIN i DON'T
- 33:03Speaker 1: i saw some very few clips of this guy at s.
- 33:06Speaker 1: See almost reminds me of a Read debtver's type coming
- 33:09Speaker 1: out of. COLLEGE i might be. WRONG i don't know
- 33:11Speaker 1: where did you sort of have this guy in terms,
- 33:16Speaker 1: of you, know. Prospect he's a very nice.
- 33:21Speaker 3: PLAYER i probably would have pegged him a few picks,
- 33:25Speaker 3: behind maybe sixteen, seventeen but that's going off of limited.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Information WHAT i did see as an absolutely outstanding secondary,
- 33:36Speaker 3: pitch and that slider slurve breaking ball really a pitch
- 33:42Speaker 3: that's going to generate a ton of swing and. Miss
- 33:45Speaker 3: the fastball is not going to light up the radar
- 33:46Speaker 3: gun like some of these other. Guys he doesn't look
- 33:49Speaker 3: like a max effort guy. Either he looks like somebody
- 33:53Speaker 3: who could be a quick riser through the. System AND
- 33:56Speaker 3: i hesitate to say that with this, organization but you
- 34:01Speaker 3: know what a quick riser that the good way to
- 34:03Speaker 3: go about is a guy that dominates performance. Wise i'm
- 34:06Speaker 3: not gonna you, know there's A mariner's. Prospect we've talked
- 34:09Speaker 3: about him many, Times Kate. Anderson you, know he's developing
- 34:13Speaker 3: and forcing the. Issue it's not the other way. Around
- 34:15Speaker 3: they're not forcing him into the. Fire the player is
- 34:19Speaker 3: dominating the level to the point that you know you
- 34:22Speaker 3: have to put him against better, competition and, ultimately if
- 34:26Speaker 3: that's the major, leagues so be. It but this might
- 34:29Speaker 3: be a real uh you, know this guy could be
- 34:33Speaker 3: the name that they do. SELECT i think that thinking
- 34:36Speaker 3: about what The angels, need, well they need, everything so
- 34:40Speaker 3: it's much easier to go by a position LIKE i
- 34:42Speaker 3: guess they have. Previously WHEN i was trying to figure
- 34:44Speaker 3: out these, names it's almost impossible not to think about
- 34:47Speaker 3: what the current need is at the major league. System
- 34:50Speaker 3: so it's a hard concept to get away from because
- 34:54Speaker 3: you can, see you, know WHEN i was coming. Up
- 34:56Speaker 3: there were multiple prospects at shortstop Yet Eric ibar And,
- 34:59Speaker 3: kaspo and there were guys that always. PUSHING i think
- 35:03Speaker 3: that's a good thing to have in a, system is
- 35:06Speaker 3: to have multiple same position, guys because you have to
- 35:10Speaker 3: look over your. Shoulder you can't get. COMFORTABLE i don't
- 35:12Speaker 3: think they have any first base prospects That i've. Seen
- 35:16Speaker 3: you do Have, nolan who's the youngest. Guy BUT i
- 35:20Speaker 3: remember WHEN i was, THERE. Cj cron was drafted and
- 35:23Speaker 3: it was and that, yeah, well but that's a pretty
- 35:27Speaker 3: good sign that they value the. Player you're not going
- 35:29Speaker 3: to preak a guy that. High SO i think in
- 35:33Speaker 3: the name that that just so we get can cover.
- 35:35Speaker 3: At Liam peterson is The Keith laws most Recent he's
- 35:40Speaker 3: a max effort delivery. Guy he's got the hard, fastball
- 35:43Speaker 3: but he Will i'm not trying to say anything negative about.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Him is it maybe translates to a great number two
- 35:52Speaker 3: starter in the major. Leagues BUT i saw some control
- 35:54Speaker 3: issues those were noted by other. People and he leans
- 35:56Speaker 3: on his slider a. Ton so my biggest fear is
- 36:01Speaker 3: a guy like that is five, innings one hundred.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Pitches have you ever seen that? Before?
- 36:06Speaker 1: Oh, BOY a couple of Times i've seen four innings
- 36:10Speaker 1: one hundred.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Pitches, well there's that would be WHAT i would WHEN
- 36:15Speaker 3: i see a guy that the, guys you, know they're
- 36:17Speaker 3: just hardwired to go for the punch to the bitter,
- 36:21Speaker 3: end and that's one way to get. Out but you
- 36:24Speaker 3: want to keep your defense engaged and other. Things watching
- 36:27Speaker 3: six sliders in a, Row maybe you do punch the guy,
- 36:30Speaker 3: out maybe you walk. HIM i like guys that have
- 36:34Speaker 3: the fastball command, first AND i think that that if
- 36:38Speaker 3: it would be my. Preference drafting high high Ish now,
- 36:41Speaker 3: TWELVE i, MEAN i have a question for.
- 36:43Speaker 1: You.
- 36:44Speaker 3: Twelve it's a nice place to, pick but you're not
- 36:47Speaker 3: going to get the best player in the draft.
- 36:49Speaker 2: There, yeah you don't want to pass.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Either they've had a lot of those mid ROUND i,
- 36:54Speaker 1: mean they've had a lot of fifteens over the last.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Decade you, know to Other, Ward, matt this were both.
- 37:01Speaker 1: TAKEN i think with the fifteen to sixteenth. Pick Debt
- 37:05Speaker 1: MERZ i believe was tenth, Overall more was. Eight so,
- 37:08Speaker 1: yeah you're you're just beyond that cream of the, crop you,
- 37:12Speaker 1: Know Paul skins type Or Kate anderson, type and you you're,
- 37:20Speaker 1: yeah you don't want to you don't want to miss.
- 37:23Speaker 1: That to, me in that, pick you have to take
- 37:25Speaker 1: the best, player regardless of. POSITION i THINK i think
- 37:29Speaker 1: that's the way The angels are going to go about
- 37:31Speaker 1: it this. YEAR i hope that's the way they go
- 37:33Speaker 1: about it this. YEAR i just can't see any other,
- 37:36Speaker 1: way especially when as you as you've made note of
- 37:39Speaker 1: they they need everything and and you, know, yeah most
- 37:42Speaker 1: of these great infielders come up to. Shortstops they're often
- 37:46Speaker 1: drafted to. Shortstops if you have a backlog of, shortstops
- 37:49Speaker 1: you move one to second, base maybe one has the
- 37:51Speaker 1: power to play third, base maybe one moves the. Outfield
- 37:54Speaker 1: you never. Know shortstops are generally you're better athletes on the,
- 37:58Speaker 1: Field so there's some versatility with with draft picks like.
- 38:01Speaker 1: That so it's gonna be really, interesting and we're gonna
- 38:05Speaker 1: be back On monday to wrap it all up and
- 38:07Speaker 1: we'll be able to talk about who The angels actually
- 38:09Speaker 1: selected and a little bit more about The All Star
