- 2:58in Saint Albans this coming Saturday there in the land of the Red Dragons.
- 3:00The Saint Alban's Heritage Festival is going on, and Michael Irvin, a business
- 3:06person there in Saint Alban's, is joining us. Talk about that now,
- 3:08Michael, good morning, how are you? Good morning and doing well?
- 3:12Thanks for having me on, Thank you for being here. Tell us about
- 3:15this heritage festival. It runs I understand from noon until seven right there in
- 3:20the heart of Saint Albans. And by the way, I'm gonna go ahead
- 3:22and get this out of the way, because I know you've heard this your
- 3:23whole life, being the Cowboys fanatic than I am. How many times have
- 3:27people compared your name spelled with an ee to that of the playmaker Michael Irvin
- 3:32to the Cowboys spelled with an eye? How many times does that happen?
- 3:35It's got to be in a thousand sin well, one thousand and one.
- 3:38Go ahead, yeah, yeah, And I got one of the jersey's Michael
- 3:43Irvin jerseys and needs to wear that all the time. Okay, all right,
- 3:46I'm a big you know, people know me now, I'm gonna been
- 3:47Cowboys fan. It's a it's a sickness to me. But anyway, let's
- 3:51talk about this festival. This weekend. What exactly is the Saint Alban's Heritage
- 3:53Festival. Yeah, so Saint Albans Heritage Fest you to be called Founders Day,
- 4:02and it was an event sponsored by the Saint Alban's Historical Society, and
- 4:09then last year there wasn't going to be one, and so a group of
- 4:13us, just regular Joe's got together and said we need to we need to
- 4:16put something together because you know, we're getting ready to celebrate our hundred and
- 4:20fiftieth anniversary last year. And then but this year we wanted to continue it
- 4:27going going on, and we went ahead and joined up with the Saint Albans
- 4:30Historical Society where it should be. So it's kind of taken the place of
- 4:34the old Sounders Day. And what it does is it celebrates the rich history
- 4:41of Saint Albans and it promotes what Saint Alban's has to offer now and so
- 4:47does a couple of things. You know, it celebrates what we have had
- 4:50in our history and what we're looking forward to in the future. Again,
- 4:55we're talking with Michael Irvin and you're a business owner in Saint Albans, is
- 4:58that right? Yes, Silent Core of a coffee company with my wife and
- 5:01uh today actually marks our fifth anniversary. Well, I want to give you
- 5:08an opportunity to plague your business because I mean some amazing things are going on
- 5:11with businesses there in Saint Alban's. I have Mayor Scott James on the show
- 5:15usually once a month to update its on that. But I mean between you
- 5:17and my good friend that Brian over at the tap, I mean, there's
- 5:19a lot of great things going on in Saint Alban's there are you know,
- 5:24it's it's come a long way. Just in the past five years, we've
- 5:28seen a number of businesses open up on Main Street and people are getting behind
- 5:32that that revitalization idea of bringing back the old small town and you know,
- 5:41making our hometown a place where our kids will want to come back to and
- 5:46want to grow up and grow a family. And so you know, it's
- 5:49been it's it takes a community. It takes a lot of people that are
- 5:54geared towards that same idea to make it happen, to make it work.
- 5:59Talk about your coffee shop. You said that you've got your I guess fifth
- 6:01anniversary going on. Now give you a free plug here for that coffee shop.
- 6:04Caul River tell us about it. Yeah, so we're in a coffee
- 6:09shop in a rosary. We have four what I call iterations. So we
- 6:14have the South Charleston location, we have a mobile truck, and we have
- 6:16a kiosk inside to Charleston Coliseum, and but our main locations is in Saint
- 6:21Alban's. It will always be our headquarters and that's where our rosary is.
- 6:26And so we get to wholesale our coffee all over the state and uh,
- 6:31you know, you can sign it up and down Charleston as well. But
- 6:34you know, one of the sutle things is we want people to have an
- 6:38experience that is positive, not just you know, not just to have to
- 6:44sup of coffee, but their inspiring scenes. We jump into the vision and
- 6:50know that their dollars will directly affecting our communities. Well, it sounds like
- 6:57your place maybe pet friendly. I'm here some dogs? Are you or is
- 7:02are you at at home or something? Because we have dogs going on the
- 7:05background. Yeah, I know, it's all good. It's live radio.
- 7:10Man. I love it. I love it. So as a as a
- 7:13small business owner, when you have these things like the heritage festivals and and
- 7:15everything, what do you get out of that and as far as bringing people
- 7:19to downtown and maybe checking out some of your businesses like yours or some of
- 7:23the others. Yeah, so it gives us a chance to showcase what what
- 7:28Old Maine is becoming. It also gives us a chance to give other small
- 7:34business owners that maybe work out of their house or work you know, maybe
- 7:40have a mobile food truck that can come and set up and and so we
- 7:45have that going on. So we'll have vendors through vendors and a lot of
- 7:48local artists, and it also showcases our local music artists as well. So
- 7:55we'll have live music and everyone that's going to be forming. A lot of
- 8:00them are kind of on the younger side. They're all hundred forty, you
- 8:03know, between the ages of eighteen and forty, and you know, a
- 8:07lot of them have a bright future. So anyway, but that's kind of
- 8:11what like what we get out of it. But but it also shows people
- 8:16that man sin Alvin's is a place to go to. It's a destination town.
- 8:20And I know that the mayor has talked about that quite a bit,
- 8:24but that was kind of a goal five years ago, is to give people
- 8:28something to do, some word to go and uh, and I think,
- 8:33you know, it's becoming known now we've already you know, all the time
- 8:39we have people that come just to experience the coffee shop or go down to
- 8:43the tap or the drumming us of the cafe and in the cupcake place.
- 8:48So it's just there's a lot of a lot of cool things happening in the
- 8:54future. Is bright. You know, we'd have you know, if I
- 8:56had more time, I would have more businesses. Well that's a good thing
- 9:01to have. I mean, it's a good thing. Have you had problems
- 9:03finding workers for all these businesses, because I know across across America it's a
- 9:07problem. It is. That is the biggest struggle. So that that's what
- 9:15my struggle is when I think about opening other locations is staffing, and not
- 9:20just staffing in general, but quality of staffing and making sure that we can
- 9:24pay people what they're worth. And so you know, we've we have not
- 9:30you know, we've we've paid people a way more than minimum wage because being
- 9:35a barista is a skill that you learn and skill you can take with you
- 9:39all over the world. And but you know, and I know we're not
- 9:45the only people that struggle with that, But I feel like we're always hiring
- 9:48and we're always interviewing people, and you know, the struggle is just making
- 9:52sure people are dependable and uh you know that they show up. That's been
- 9:58our main issue. Yeah. Yeah, Well and you're certainly not alone in
- 10:01that, Michael, because it's it's happened all across America. All right,
- 10:05let's get back to the Saint Alban's Heritage Festival again. It's happening this Saturday's
- 10:07or a place where people can learn more about the activitis. Got a Facebook
- 10:11page or any place they can go to, Yes, this is Saint Alban's
- 10:16Heritage Festival Facebook page. Go there. We do have an event and we'd
- 10:20love it if you share it, if you like it, respond if you're
- 10:24going, and in there it'll tell you the details. So we have a
- 10:28cruise in happening. So last year we had a big car show. This
- 10:31year's just to be on a smaller scale. So we have a cruise in,
- 10:35we have food trucks, we have craft vendors, we have the farmers
- 10:43Saint Alban's Farmers Market and we'll be on Main Street for this event and Main
- 10:48Street will be closed starting at eight a m. A Saturday, morning on
- 10:52the twelfth, and even later that night we have a dedication of a new
- 10:56music stage on Main Street, The Dobbs Stage is what it's called. And
- 11:05so there's gonna be some mood music again starting at seven, and so it's
- 11:09gonna be a great day of festivities celebrating the history of Saint Alban's but also
- 11:16what it is now and where we want to go with it. All right,
- 11:18well it sounds good. It's gonna be a great day there and Saint
- 11:20Albans a night too. Michael Irvin, I appreciate you taking time out of
- 11:24your schedule to join us today. Thanks a lot, absolutely, thanks,
- 11:26have a great day. Thank you as well. Michael Irvin again one of
- 11:30the folks behind the Saint Alban's Heritage Festival formerly Founder's Day that's going on this
- 11:35Saturday. Starts at noon, runstal seven or later, live music and all
- 11:37kinds of great food and car cruise install It's gonna be a great time to
- 11:43check it out. If you need more information getting the Saint Alban's Heritage Festival

- 12:03The best kept secret to Charleston. Texting services provided by Fruit Pharmacy or
- 12:05Hometown Family Pharmacy. I want to get to this before we get to the
- 12:09break, and they wean't bring Fred Albert from the aft in here. I
- 12:11got a text toward the end of the show yesterday. A matter of fact,
- 12:15to acount of way this works is once I wrap up the show,
- 12:18I turn off the I turn off the computer and log out, and I
- 12:20don't see things until the next day. But I got a text there at
- 12:24the end of the show yesterday, where you recall there was there was a
- 12:28gas explosion in Dunbar a few days ago. The owner of the house lost
- 12:33cat. The cat ran and they are desperately, of course, according to
- 12:37a texture, trying to find her and they've not been able to locate her
- 12:41since then. Now she is chipped, so she's not at any of the
- 12:43shelters. I actually talked to her a good friend, Hannah Gardner from the
- 12:46Canal Charleston, New Maine Association yesterday. Handa, of course, is on
- 12:48the show every Friday. They said they are aware of the cat and they're
- 12:52trying to find it too, this beautiful cat. They actually texted me a
- 12:56picture of the cat. So again, this cat was in that tragic gas
- 13:00explosion in Dunbar from a few days ago, and the cat obviously scared ran
- 13:03off and they're trying to find the cat. At the conclusion of the show,
- 13:07I will upload the picture that they sent me up to Dave Allen Radio
- 13:11on Facebook and at Dave A seventy on Twitter. I'm not smart enough,
- 13:13unfortunately to be able to do two things at once, but I will have
- 13:16it. At the end of the show. I'll try to have that uploaded.

- 16:47Ryan Nicholson is our producer to day. I want to welcome to the show,
- 16:48Fred Albert, good friend from the American Federation Teachers. Mister Albert,
- 16:52good morning. How are you, sir? Good morning, Dave. I'm
- 16:53well. How are you doing? I'm doing fine. First of all,
- 16:56thanks for the gift he brought me. And Ryan, he brought me a
- 16:59stra reliever. Do I seem stressed? I've got to. It's a nice
- 17:03little thing, says Ready, read and write West Virginia on it. I
- 17:06got a little stress reliever. If it was a little bit heavier, I
- 17:08could just throw it through the glass thereby. Now all's good with me,
- 17:11how about you, buddy? Everything is great. It's the most wonderful time
- 17:15of the year. School is starting up in many counties. I think teachers
- 17:19are going back Today. I've been traveling around the state, have been meeting
- 17:23with new teachers, and there's always hope. It's so good to see young
- 17:30people who have answered the call to this profession that I love so dearly,
- 17:34the teaching profession, which I say makes all other professions possible. Monday,
- 17:40I was in Kanawa County at their new teacher orientation and saw two of my
- 17:45former students who are now teachers, and that always makes me feel very proud
- 17:51for them. Well, that's good. And you know how long were you
- 17:53a teacher in the class? I taught for thirty years, twenty of those
- 17:57my last twenty years been in middle schools. Okay. I always it's interesting
- 18:03to me when people and who was it? Who is it that I have
- 18:06on the show that you've texted a couple of times? Wasn't McKenzie McKenzie,
- 18:11Spencer and Douglas? Yeah, Eaton Douglas from Yeah, you had both of
- 18:15those eating they're both regulars on the show. McKenzie with the Fest of All
- 18:18and Eaton Douglas with the Dirty Birds. And when I've had them on the
- 18:21show, you've actually texted me and said, hey, mister Albert. Mister
- 18:23Albert says, Hello, when when you see your students, your former students
- 18:29that have achieved good things like those two ladies have and others have, I
- 18:32mean, that's got to give you a little bit of a sensor pride,
- 18:33even though you're not solely responsible for it. But it takes a team,
- 18:37you know. But I do like the fact that they remember me, and
- 18:41apparently I did something right. I didn't ruin them. I would like to
- 18:47think that I helped them along on this journey that they're now answering. One
- 18:51young man I'm most proud of that I talked with on Monday. He actually
- 18:56had worked for the city. That's where I last had a conversation with him,
- 19:00and then he became a custodian for Knall County Schools and now he is
- 19:06a certified teacher with that's also he's had a very interesting pathway to what he's
- 19:12doing now. But I have heard from several teachers where he will be teaching.
- 19:18He already taught some last year there, I think mostly for the whole
- 19:22year, but he's considered a new teacher because he's been hired full time in
- 19:27that position, actually teaching behavioral disorder students. But they love him. They
- 19:33said, he's doing a great job. And I'm not surprised because he was
- 19:37a great student. He's one of those students that stick out in my mind
- 19:41of he was always doing the right things. And I've had so many teachers
- 19:45again, we're talking with Fred Albert from the American Federation of Teachers. Fred,
- 19:48I've had so many teachers and educators that have told me, you know,
- 19:52from that they see a kid in kindergartener first grade, and they see
- 19:55this young man, this young lady is going to achieve great things now.
- 19:59And there's there's a flip side of that sometimes and those people go into radio,
- 20:03those people that because because I get that a lot from, you know,
- 20:07my former teachers. I'm friends with my kindergarten teacher on Facebook and she
- 20:11said, I always knew that you would do something running your mouth. So
- 20:15that's it. Well, you know, I taught kindergarten one year back in
- 20:18the day I had my very first job. I was riffed after my first
- 20:25year, and riffed means reduction in forms of course, and I didn't not
- 20:27know that that happened to teachers back then. But the next year in order
- 20:33to have a job, I taught kindergarten half day and I was a half
- 20:37day librarian at two different schools. But one of those kindergarten students I will
- 20:41never forget him. He came up to me and extended his hand on the
- 20:47first day and said, I need to introduce myself kindergartener, and he did.
- 20:52And then years later I saw him at the Capitol. He came up
- 20:57to me and he stands about a head taller than myself, and he said,
- 21:00mister Albert, you may not remember me, but I am. And
- 21:04he told me who he was, and he is a teacher and a football
- 21:07coach and very successful. That's awesome, that's good stuff. I must have
- 21:11done something right in kindergarten. Also, you learned him up good, learned
- 21:15him up, learned him up good. All right. So you were telling
- 21:18me as you came in, and I had seen some of this on the
- 21:22news, that there were some some test scores came out yesterday and it shows
- 21:25a positive It shows that we're moving in the right direction, which is always
- 21:29hopeful. That's where we want to go. We know we have a lot
- 21:33more work to do, but echoing what President Paul Hardesty said, this is
- 21:40encouraging because we're moving in the right direction. I think the overall math scores
- 21:44were up by two percent, and I think the same with the reading scores.
- 21:49The science scores maybe not so much, but it looks hopeful. Rone
- 21:55County had, and a small county like Rone County, kudos to them.
- 21:59They had some of the most significant games. I think they went up by
- 22:03like five percent in math and reading. You know, there's an initiative that
- 22:07most people are excited about called Ready Read Write through the State Department of Education.
- 22:15There were some symposiums held this summer. I was fortunate enough to be
- 22:19able to attend the one in Charleston where we had over six hundred educators there,
- 22:25and they were excited. They were excited about the initiative of Ready Read
- 22:30Write. Teachers want their students to be successful. I've yet to meet a
- 22:34teacher who says I don't care. They care and they want their students to
- 22:40do well. So this is encouraging. As you look over the test scores,
- 22:44I still haven't had time to dive down really deep into all of the
- 22:48things that are on that page, but it doesn't look like our charter schools
- 22:53our public charter schools did as well as our public schools kids. So I
- 23:00know they're new and they've got some growing pains, but I think our public
- 23:03schools do a nice job and they're going to continue to do a nice job.
- 23:07Gred Albert for the American Federation Teachers is here. How are we doing
- 23:11unrecruiting teachers and west? It is a tough sell right now, you know,
- 23:15talking about having hope. I was also in Cable County at their new
- 23:19teacher orientation. They had over a hundred in attendance there. I was on
- 23:25my way to Wood County that same day and about ten miles out of side
- 23:30of the event where the event was being held, I got a phone call
- 23:33to go home because they had a storm and flooding there. So I didn't
- 23:37get to the Wood County new Teacher orientation. But it's it's a tough sell
- 23:42because most of the personnel directors that I've spoken with have said, we still
- 23:47have openings that we are struggling to feel. We've got to we've got to
- 23:52support our teachers. We've got to take this profession lifted up. And it's
- 23:59a great profession, it truly is. There are many many rewards besides money,
- 24:06so we've got to make it more inviting. But I'm concerned that we
- 24:11are losing some of our newer teachers. They're just leaving, you know,
- 24:14it's not necessarily people who are eligible for retirement. The numbers aren't out.
- 24:18I've talked with several personnel directors around the state and they don't have their numbers
- 24:22yet. They're still struggling to fill spots. So we'll have to see in
- 24:27about, you know, a couple more weeks how many are still having holes
- 24:33in their employment. But I hope last year we had over fifteen hundred openings
- 24:40that were only filled by teachers who were not necessarily certified in the field they
- 24:45were teaching. So that's concerning. Every student deserves a highly qualified, certified
- 24:52teacher in their classroom. I would agree for add and again, the sixty
- 24:55four million dollar question here is why aren't more people wanting to go into the
- 25:00profession. And I'll follow it up but saying, if you took a poll
- 25:03on kids maybe in grade school in West Virginia or anywhere for that matter,
- 25:07let's say the fifties, sixties, or even when I was in elementary school,
- 25:10which would have been in the nineteen seventies and asked them, what do
- 25:12you want to do when you grow up? A large number of those students,
- 25:17kids I remember, would have said, be a teacher. Why isn't
- 25:19that the case now? Well, I think there are several reasons for that,
- 25:23Dave. One of the reasons they've lost we've lost respect for those people
- 25:30who are in front of the classroom. We've lost respect for everybody in Society's
- 25:34another show we have, and that's a shame. But our teachers have such
- 25:41strong influences on our young people, on our students, and I think all
- 25:45of us could look back on our school years and say so and so really
- 25:52put me on the right path or along with my parents, because I had
- 25:55great parents and I'm fortunate they helped me determine who I am today. But
- 26:03like you said, we've lost respect and a lot of professions the law enforcement
- 26:07in other areas, doctors, lawyers. But it's just tough and money,
- 26:17you know, you've got to compensate people fairly. And many students, especially
- 26:22math students who are really good in math, they see they can make a
- 26:26lot more money if they go to work in a private industry using their great
- 26:30math skills, so we have to look at all of those the whole package.
- 26:36It's just tough. It's truly our public school numbers in West Virginia.
- 26:41Are you folks losing teachers to charter schools and things? I don't think we
- 26:45are that that draft virtual schools. They're just they're just leaving the profession totally.
- 26:49They're going to general or they're going to other states, or young teachers
- 26:53see the pathway to making more in their profession moving into administrations. So we've
- 27:00had several who have because our principles are leaving also, and we've had several
- 27:07bright, young, great teachers who are now becoming administrators. And we need
- 27:11good administrators as well. But for the sake of losing them in the classroom,
- 27:17it's it's discouraging. How are we looking at our surrounding states, because
- 27:21that was something that was always reported that you know, if you have somebody
- 27:23that lives in a border state, maybe in the Eastern Panhandle or something,
- 27:27or you know, they could go over to another state and make more money.
- 27:32Where are we at That still exists? However, this is a nationwide
- 27:36problem. We have teacher shortages and service personnel shortages. Bus drivers, cooks,
- 27:41custodians all across the nation. And I think there that comes back to
- 27:47the respect issue, because as we were growing up, we respected those in
- 27:52authority and those who were in the teaching profession and other professions. That's been
- 27:59somewhat lost. I was sad to hear the other day the young six year
- 28:03old who shot the teacher in some county in Virginia showed no remorse for doing
- 28:08that. And I'm like, how in the world did we get this.
- 28:11I heard a clip on the news yesterday morning on the morning news. You're
- 28:15on the station where this is a six year old kid that said, I
- 28:19shot that blank dead. I mean expletive. It wasn't an accident, he
- 28:25said, I shot that be dead. I cannot imagine. But you know,
- 28:29hopefully, hopefully we're not going to stay in that place very long.
- 28:33I don't know how we get out of it. Fred, Well, we've
- 28:36all got to pull together. We have to lift up this profession. One
- 28:40thing that at the symposium, and I tell everyone this everywhere I go.
- 28:45Weston Keishnik is a great motivational speaker. He came to the symposium here,
- 28:51the invest symposium that the State Department put on in Charleston, and I remember
- 28:56at the end of his talk, he put up a chair on this age
- 29:00and just very casually sat down and talked to all the teachers there, and
- 29:03he said this, don't set yourself on fire trying to keep everyone else warm.
- 29:10And I thought, that's what we do. Many times. Teachers are
- 29:14worn out. They get burnt out because they take care of their caregivers,
- 29:18they take care of try to take care of everyone. And then he said
- 29:22this, which I think is also something we need to remember. Check on
- 29:26each other at the end of the school day or during the school day.
- 29:30Check on your colleagues and make sure they're all right. And I've been preaching
- 29:33that same sermon everywhere I go. We need to check on our people to
- 29:37make sure they're okay, because these are very trying times for all of us.
- 29:44I would agree, Texas Day, you should do a show where listeners
- 29:47give props, thanks, and shout out to those teachers that made the biggest
- 29:51impacts on their lives. I'll do that as we get a great as we
- 29:53get closer to the school term. That's a good idea, texture I appreciate
- 29:57that, all right. So, speaking of the school term, that's coming
- 30:00up. What are you looking at this year? I mean, well,
- 30:03we're looking at having a good year. Hopefully it will be somewhat of a
- 30:07normal year in relationship to what we've experienced over the past three years. We're
- 30:15excited. We look, you know, to do our best. We're very
- 30:18excited about the Ready Read Write initiative. We want our children to be able
- 30:22to be successful with reading. Reading is so important. Writing is important,
- 30:27and they all fit in with My favorite subject of course is math. But
- 30:32if you can't read and you can't write, you can't answer a reading math
- 30:36problem. But we're hopeful. We're hopeful that we're gonna be strong, Our
- 30:41schools are going to be safe, and our students are gonna love coming back
- 30:45to school. They're excited. I call it the most wonderful time of the
- 30:49year, and I think as I've traveled around, I'm seeing excitement in our
- 30:55educators. They're ready to come back and they're they're looking for a great year
- 30:59and our test scores are going to be even better at the end of this
- 31:03school year. Best of luck to you and all the educators out there.

- 34:22here and I don't disagree totally with what that texts are saying. You could
- 34:25set here and you can make a list of all the reasons why people wouldn't
- 34:29want to be a teacher. You know, Fred and I talked about the
- 34:31respect. There was a time that being a teacher was and you know,
- 34:37it's just a bigger problem with society, man. I mean, I've told
- 34:39the story before. You know, when I when I was a kid,
- 34:43if I came home and I looked at my mother or father and I said,
- 34:45well, mister so and so or missus so and so is picking on
- 34:51me. I was automatically presumed to be wrong because I'm a kid and they're
- 34:55an adult. And we've somehow gotten away from that. You know, I
- 35:00don't know. I don't know how you fix it. I really don't.
- 35:02And you've heard me say before there's a couple of professions that I don't know
- 35:07I would do for any amount of money. One is to be a police
- 35:08officer, and other is being a teacher. Because of the lack of respect
- 35:12that you have for both of them, I really do believe that the days,
- 35:15the hours are counting down until this epic matchup. It's Jordan Malone,
- 35:22It's Steelers and Cowboys, It's Yankees and red Socks. It's the Midnight Express
- 35:25versus the Rock and Roll Express. I'm talking about Pushkin v Hodge, State
- 35:30Republican Party co chair Tony Hodge taking on State Democratic Party Chair and Delegate Mike

- 35:54because it is. Should be a good show, though, texting phone calls

- 38:22known as Chase, there's been a story that many It's been a story that
- 38:24many people have been obsessed with for some time. Jeff Jenkins has the story
- 38:29posted this morning WV Metro News dot com. Marcus Dudley was the police officer
- 38:34in question. Now he was an officer in the Chapmanville Police Department, but
- 38:37actually lived in South Charleston. He now lives out of state after he was
- 38:40fired by the Chapmanville Police department. The dog went missing on April eleven,
- 38:46and when the dog went missing, Officer Dudley reported the disappearance of the dog
- 38:52to the police in South Charleston since that's where the officer lived. He Officer
- 38:58Dudley claimed the dog jumped the fence. Police have said that they have proven
- 39:02that that did not happen. Now, Marcus Dudley was due in court yesterday
- 39:07after being indicted. He did not show up yesterday, and can Circuit Judge
- 39:15Duke Bloom issued a warrant for the arrest of Officer Dudley. He has until
- 39:20eleven this morning to make an appearance. Aerk Kerry huda Sek is following the
- 39:23story closely, will have updates whether or not he shows up. Now.
- 39:30Dudley's lawyers say because he's living out of state, he had transportation issues getting
- 39:35back to West Virginia. Well, one thing's for sure, you better get
- 39:38his butt back there by eleven o'clock this morning. One way the other you
- 39:40get a bus or something get here. So we'll see if he's there or
- 39:44not. And as I said, Carrie is monitoring the story, will have
- 39:45an update. I think she's going to join hobby on the talk line to
- 39:50talk about it a little bit more so. This is a story that started,
- 39:52you know, in Logan County, and you know, my home county.
- 39:57I have some insight into this. I actually met Officer Dudley a couple
- 40:00of years ago. I was visiting a friend who was with the Chappinville Fire
- 40:05Department and Officer Dudley, who was then employed by the police department, came
- 40:07in. I was introduced to him, didn't have the dog with him at
- 40:10the time. It seemed like a nice enough guy. He was a military
- 40:14guy originally from Georgia, so he and I kind of hit it off because
- 40:19I told him the story. I was born at Fort Benny, Georgia,
- 40:21where my dad was stationed in the military, and we talked a lot about
- 40:23that. As I said, he seemed like a nice guy, but I'm
- 40:30afeared as the old timers were saying, we're not going to find the dog.
- 40:37If you know anything at all about fully trained canine officers, they don't
- 40:40go missing, they don't jump fences, and they don't get stolen. They
- 40:46are fully trained to make sure none of those things happened. The dogs I'm
- 40:51talking about, and being from a smaller area you hear stuff, and it's
- 40:55pretty credible stories that are out there about what happened to Sadly the canine officer.
- 41:00I am not going to put it out there, but let's just say
- 41:02the court system won't have a difficult time in sorting this one out and getting
- 41:07a severe punishment or Officer Dudley. My opinion, my opinion on he certainly
- 41:13deserves it, and well once if he does, if he's convicted to prison
- 41:19when they find out what he did, He's gonna you don't have a bad
- 41:22day. I'll just say it and leave it alone. Carry who is again
- 41:25following the story closely. We knock out a couple of texts here. Let
- 41:30me see Texas Republicans defund education. Republicans get on the radio to bad mouth
- 41:37the public school system. Republicans fight tooth and nail not to give teachers raises,
- 41:42and incomes day to say Republicans aren't a problem. No, that's not
- 41:46at all what I said. That's not even close to what I said.
- 41:50I said. This goes back well before. This has been going on for
- 41:54some time, and I am not going to give my Republican breadth in.
- 42:00I think there's things that they should be doing and could be doing better.
- 42:04Yeah, there I said it, But now that's that's not my like.
- 42:07There's nobody in the world has more respect for educators and law police officers than
- 42:14I do, and especially educators. The good ones are really, really good.
- 42:19And in our society right now, the teachers are all. You know,
- 42:24you don't have an idea. Most of us don't what being a public
- 42:30school teacher is like in West Virginia now, or for that matter, anywhere
- 42:34across the country, because you are asked to not only teach science, English,
- 42:38math, you are also asked to be a social worker. You're asked
- 42:42to be a a quasi parent. You're asked to teach them skills that they
- 42:45don't get at home because a lot of parents are just crabby parents. A
- 42:50lot not all, obviously, not all, but a lot are. And
- 42:52so when these kids show up to school, these kids that are in school
- 42:55now, they face things horrors that you and I be in a jen kid
- 43:00can't even imagine what these kids are going through. But you know, I'm
- 43:02not going to give the Republicans a pass on this. They should be doing
- 43:07more and could be doing more. And when as it comes to public education,
- 43:10I agree, oh hardly, Texas. Dear Dave, did I miss
- 43:16here? At the top of the show was today's topic, How old is
- 43:20too old? It's twelve tales to another when I'm getting to it, got
- 43:22a lot of stuff to get to, all right, But I did want
- 43:27to pose this question, and I just want to kind of keep as president.
- 43:30Not all people of the same age act the same way. We all
- 43:35know that, But is there is there an age that's too old to be
- 43:38president? A majority of Americans don't want either President Biden or former President Trump
- 43:44to be the nominee for president in twenty twenty four, but unless something changes,
- 43:47they will be. And one of the reasons people cite that they don't
- 43:52want either one of them, and there are variety on both sides, but
- 43:54one of the major reasons his age. And it's not the only reason,
- 44:00but it's one of the reasons. So how old is too old to serve
- 44:05for president or any major political office for that matter. You know, people
- 44:09have questioned the faculties of Mitch McConnell, of Din Feinstein. Remember when people
- 44:16said Senator Bird wasn't exactly hitting on all cylinders in his later years, nor
- 44:22President Reagan in his second term. So there's the question, and I got
- 44:27plenty of responses to get to Sorry I didn't get to it sooner, but
- 44:29sometimes you know, radio happens. Should there be an age limit to be
- 44:35able to run for president? Or you know, go ahead and say higher
- 44:38office? You know those Senate in there as well. Should there be an
- 44:43If we know that there is an age minimum going to be thirty five to
- 44:45run for president, so let's say, should there be an age max?

- 47:37Texas. I agree there are many good teachers, but I personally know several
- 47:42that are lazy, horrible people, and the national and state unions have caused
- 47:45many people to lose faith in the profession. According to a text or one,
- 47:50more on this and I'll get back to the age thing, tex says
- 47:52we need more discipline in our school's period. I would agree with that.
- 47:54We also need to support our teachers and administrators and give them the highest pay
- 47:59that we can afford, says a text. All right, so how old
- 48:02is too old to run for president or to service president? Tech says no
- 48:07one over seventy should run or should serve. Tex says, seventy five is
- 48:14the age. Other Texas seventy four is the age. Texas as well,
- 48:19I just think that people need to be tested or something, because one person
- 48:22can be eighty and be mentally and totally there, but another person's sixty.
- 48:28Not good point. Tex says, that's a hard question. There is a
- 48:30minimum age to run, but all are seventy five year olds? Are all
- 48:35seventy five year olds the same person? Not all forty five year olds are
- 48:37the same people. There needs to be some sort of a neurological test that
- 48:42is put forward by a doctor. Texas says a lot can change medically and
- 48:45physically cognitively in four years. Mister Reagan still appeared razors sharp during the eighty
- 48:51four reelection campaign, but we all know how that he had declined by the
- 48:53time he retired in nineteen eighty nine. We've all seen photos side by side
- 48:58of how much even younger presidents such as Clinton, Bush and Obama aged while
- 49:01in office. Perhaps the hardest job in the world. It takes a huge
- 49:06toll. Tech says, it's about performance, not age. Tech says,
- 49:09you know, I think, no matter the age, they should have to
- 49:12take a cognitive test. I mean, my husband's grandma is one hundred and
- 49:15four and still has her mind. Text says got to get term limits to
- 49:22prevent dementia from spreading more. Tech says you shouldn't really impose arbitrary restrictions on
- 49:27the will of the American people. They should be able to vote for whoever
- 49:30they want. The problem is that people aren't paying as much attention as we
- 49:34would like, But slap it. An age limit on presidents is just treating
- 49:37the symptom without treating the disease. Texture says, I believe the age to
- 49:42run is sixty five. Should not be above sixty five. I think seventy.
- 49:46Says the texture should be a max. Should be the max to run.
- 49:51Tex says no. However, there should be an immediate constitutional amendment and
- 49:54the president has to be human, as the robots are pretty close to having
- 49:59a say in things according to a texture. And I think it's a really
- 50:04good point when you say not all people of the same age act or had
- 50:08the same personalities the same abilities. I mean, look at Senator Joe Manchon
- 50:15now, regardless of what you know people you may think of Senator Joe Manchin.
- 50:21I'm not talking about his policies. I'm not about just the guy.
- 50:24Joe will be seventy six years old in a couple of weeks. And you
- 50:30may not like Senator Manchion. Maybe you do, but one thing about Senator
- 50:34Manchion, no one would ever question his mental capacity at his age. The
- 50:38guy is incredible. He is the most incredible politician I've ever seen. And
- 50:44what I mean by that is the way he conducts himself in public. Again,
- 50:47not talking about policies. I'm just talking about the politician. Man shakes
- 50:51hands of everybody. He remembers that he meets you one time, he remembers
- 50:54you, he remembers your mother, he remembers you know what you do for
- 50:58a living. He knows and he's pretty sharp. A matter of fact,
- 51:02I was talking to one of his staff members yesterday. He was a good
- 51:05friend of mine and he's been with Senator Mansion for several years. He says
- 51:08that younger people can't keep up with him. So I don't know that age
- 51:13is necessarily the thing. I don't know. Programming note, Senator Manchion will
- 51:16be on Hoppy at ten o six this morning. President Biden will be eighty
- 51:21three years old. Later this year, former President Trump is seventy seven years
- 51:29old. So again I don't know where I am on this is should there
- 51:36be an age max? We knew again there is an age, there's an
- 51:39age minimum, but what about a max? Maybe it is that we need
- 51:45to do cognitive testing on them. Tex says, as far as a test
- 51:50for age for president, the voters should have enough sense to research the candidates.
- 51:53So well, yeah, Wot'll leave that alone. Tex says, I
- 51:59think the issue of politicians not representing their voters would be fixed by getting big
- 52:01money donors out of the process, though he won't be representative of everyone as
- 52:06long as the Coke and above, the Cooch brothers and they buffet types are
- 52:08throwing money into politics. All Right, we gotta go. Thank you all
