- 3:45Speaker 1: wrap up episode of the Bootleg cav podcast, Merry Christmas
- 3:50Speaker 1: and all that shit. Batt Miller from rap Radar joins us.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Let's go yo, it's the Bootle Cab podcast. We got
- 3:59Speaker 1: a special asked legendary hip hop journalist b Dot my
- 4:03Speaker 1: guy b Dot from rap Radar. Okay, how you doing, man?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Look good man? How you doing? I'm good. It's crazy
- 4:10Speaker 1: because I specifically remember this time last year you and
- 4:15Speaker 1: Elliott ran My dude, I was playing video games in
- 4:19Speaker 1: my man cave watching that Drake interview and then the
- 4:23Speaker 1: Griselda interview followed up. It was just it was like
- 4:27Speaker 1: some of the best. It was like a historical month
- 4:31Speaker 1: because those were two of the best interviews, especially that
- 4:33Speaker 1: Drake interview is like a historical interview and you guys
- 4:35Speaker 1: have a lot of those. Yeah. Man, that was hard
- 4:37Speaker 1: to keep a secret. You know. I had to hold
- 4:39Speaker 1: that in for like two weeks and we decided to
- 4:42Speaker 1: do it on Christmas Day because you know it's Christmas. Yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 1: it was a gift to y'all, you know. So it
- 4:47Speaker 1: was amazing, man, Thank you. Man. I appreciate. It's hard
- 4:50Speaker 1: watching those interviews back because then I'm like, damn, I
- 4:52Speaker 1: should have asked this question or what should have framed
- 4:55Speaker 1: it this way? So I always cringe when I watched
- 4:58Speaker 1: the interviews again. But you know, se like everyone enjoyed it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So I feel like that always happens when you interview
- 5:05Speaker 1: someone like that. You're always like, ship, I forgot this,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and then you yourself all the way back home like
- 5:11Speaker 1: fuck what you know, it happens. You know, you catch
- 5:14Speaker 1: him the next time around. What was something you you
- 5:16Speaker 1: you had uh felt that way about what the Drake
- 5:18Speaker 1: interview like that you would wish you would have asked him.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I think I would have asked them more about Nicki
- 5:23Speaker 1: Minaj and their relationship. And I think there was something
- 5:27Speaker 1: about Cuddy I wanted to ask him about. But that
- 5:30Speaker 1: was that was about it. So you know it the
- 5:34Speaker 1: next time around, right for sure? Man, And you guys
- 5:36Speaker 1: have been doing a great job throughout the pandemic, like
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know, with the with the you know, the title
- 5:41Speaker 1: check ins and then you have your art art what
- 5:43Speaker 1: is it? Art of wraps or artifacts? What is it?
- 5:48Speaker 1: It's called artifacts and play on the word artifacts, right,
- 5:52Speaker 1: So it was just basically kind of like a hip
- 5:53Speaker 1: hop show and tell I had this idea for a
- 5:56Speaker 1: long time. I pitched it to MTV. I me and
- 5:58Speaker 1: it Canon actually were part is on it. It was
- 6:01Speaker 1: another It was another name called Junkies, and I just
- 6:03Speaker 1: switched the name. And we had pitched it to MTV
- 6:07Speaker 1: and Viacom and things were in motion. But you know
- 6:09Speaker 1: how that happens. Things got the old weight and I
- 6:13Speaker 1: decided to just do it on my own. And so far,
- 6:16Speaker 1: so good. I'm enjoying it all right, So let's get
- 6:18Speaker 1: to this list of yours, man. But first of all,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you got multiple lists, but multiple lists I have lists
- 6:23Speaker 1: on lists. I think I'm gonna put out another one too.
- 6:25Speaker 1: For best albums. I was gonna say, yeah, I got mine.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I was going to share with you, so well, well,
- 6:32Speaker 1: first of all, this will be probably come out if
- 6:33Speaker 1: you're gonna if you're gonna release that today, yeah, we
- 6:36Speaker 1: could share it on the podcast. It's gonna come out
- 6:37Speaker 1: after Let's let's start with the things we strongly agree upon,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and that's Freddi Gibbs. Now, you and I have been
- 6:44Speaker 1: a part of the Freddi Gibbs Way for a very
- 6:46Speaker 1: long time. The first time I interviewed fred was in nine.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You know, he's he's always been one of my favorite
- 6:52Speaker 1: rappers in the world. And you know, obviously he had
- 6:55Speaker 1: the esgn uh you know, he was doing his worts
- 7:00Speaker 1: column with you with rap Radar dar dot com. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and uh, you know, I think that it's, you know, finally,
- 7:08Speaker 1: every everything's kind of coming around for fred you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: as far as just peer's respect and you know, and
- 7:13Speaker 1: and mind you. I think in twenty fourteen, Pinata was
- 7:16Speaker 1: a classic. Last year, Bandana was a classic. It was
- 7:22Speaker 1: my best rap of last year too, I agree, And
- 7:25Speaker 1: I always kind of get like yo, man, that he's
- 7:27Speaker 1: your boys. You know, I'm like, nah, man, Fred is
- 7:29Speaker 1: that guy. So I think i think let's talk about
- 7:32Speaker 1: Fred's year, man, because you know, I think Freddie Gibbs.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You know, even even going back to last year, you
- 7:37Speaker 1: you'd be hard pressed to find a two album run.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I mean, there are those that exist, obviously, but man,
- 7:43Speaker 1: that's a hell of a two album run. I agree.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I think you have Bandana, like you said last year,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and just this one this year is just like Alfredo
- 7:51Speaker 1: is incredible. I think Fred is wrapping at a really
- 7:54Speaker 1: really high level. It's at the point where when he's rapping,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I'm on the edge of my seat just anticipating what
- 7:59Speaker 1: he's going to say next. Like he's at that level now,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you know. So I'm just really happy that he's finally
- 8:06Speaker 1: getting the recognition he deserves. I mean, I think the
- 8:08Speaker 1: Grammy nominations definitely put the spotlight on him a little
- 8:12Speaker 1: bit more. And it's funny because I remember talking to
- 8:14Speaker 1: him throughout the year, that's all he kept talking about nomination,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Like him the nominations probably already a win. So I'm
- 8:22Speaker 1: really happy for him and I hope he does take
- 8:24Speaker 1: it home. Yeah, it was important to him last year too.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I think that that was a big, a big reason
- 8:28Speaker 1: why they did the album with the RCA last year. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 8:32Speaker 1: and you know he got Snubb last year, so this
- 8:33Speaker 1: year definitely, it definitely felt like okay finally, I mean yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 1: in general, the Grammy nominations this year for Best Rap Album,
- 8:42Speaker 1: if I had to put money on it, yeah, like
- 8:45Speaker 1: my own money. Yeah. I think NAS probably goes home
- 8:50Speaker 1: with the trophy and not because it's the better album, right,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I agree, But it's just like Nas, how many times
- 8:57Speaker 1: has not been nominated and he hasn't gotten a Grammy.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I feel like fucking Susan Lucia rat you know what
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm saying. Like he keeps getting nominated for different awards
- 9:05Speaker 1: and he just never wins. So I think they'll give
- 9:07Speaker 1: it to him this time around. But you know, it's
- 9:09Speaker 1: either gonna be him or Alfred or I don't think
- 9:11Speaker 1: anybody else has a chance. Yeah, surprises happened. I never
- 9:14Speaker 1: forget when Drake and Justin Bieber were of the best
- 9:17Speaker 1: New artists and Esmeralda spald in one and I was like,
- 9:19Speaker 1: who the fuck is this? Yeah, I still don't know
- 9:21Speaker 1: who this is exactly. So you know, I think even
- 9:26Speaker 1: the last year they had a tie if I'm not
- 9:27Speaker 1: mistaken right, or it was it the year before the
- 9:30Speaker 1: best rap performance, Yeah, I don't remember. That's crazy. Yeah, yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I think I think Fred deserves to win it, and
- 9:38Speaker 1: I think I think the betting favorites gotta be nas though,
- 9:41Speaker 1: just because it's like when Leo DiCaprio had all those
- 9:44Speaker 1: Oscar nominations and they finally gave him more than you
- 9:46Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, it's exactly. And then another person
- 9:50Speaker 1: who you had high on your list, who I think
- 9:52Speaker 1: also doesn't get a lot of enough respect. He's he's
- 9:55Speaker 1: not he's around ten on mine, but your list you
- 9:59Speaker 1: had Rush really high. And I think Russ doesn't get
- 10:01Speaker 1: enough love, he doesn't get enough respect. I also think,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, people just it's kind of popular to just
- 10:06Speaker 1: not like Russ, to dislike the guy. It's hard being
- 10:08Speaker 1: a white rapper these days. Well, he's also really cocky
- 10:11Speaker 1: and like he makes it. You know. I always say
- 10:14Speaker 1: like Russ gives out so much free game that artists
- 10:16Speaker 1: should like really listen to, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 10:20Speaker 1: I think I'm sorry, and I was gonna say, like
- 10:22Speaker 1: that's even even if you take his music and his
- 10:24Speaker 1: skill out of it, like he's really dropping like serious
- 10:27Speaker 1: gems that any artist should listen to. I agree, I
- 10:30Speaker 1: think Russ is nice. If you're a rap fan and
- 10:32Speaker 1: you don't like gravitate to Russ's lyrics, like, I just
- 10:35Speaker 1: can't really respect your opinion. I think a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 1: people don't even give him a shot that's true to
- 10:40Speaker 1: his rhymes. He's spitting his ass off. I think the
- 10:43Speaker 1: chomp ep was a great example of that act, and
- 10:45Speaker 1: it's all of the freestyles that he peppered throughout the year,
- 10:48Speaker 1: specifically the life from the Villa one style, like congrats
- 10:52Speaker 1: freestyle is crazy. How can you listen to that and not,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know, give him his props. So I think Russ,
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know, he does a lot of the pop records
- 11:01Speaker 1: as well, so I think that gets mitigate, that gets
- 11:03Speaker 1: overshadowed by the rap stuff. But you know, Russ is incredible.
- 11:07Speaker 1: He could really wrap his ass off and he can
- 11:09Speaker 1: hang with the best of them. Who was somebody who
- 11:13Speaker 1: you you think was like knocking on your like top
- 11:19Speaker 1: ten that didn't necessarily make it. This ship was hard,
- 11:22Speaker 1: Like I was wrestling with this list for at least
- 11:25Speaker 1: since like Thanksgiving, it's rough, it's hard, and plus I
- 11:29Speaker 1: do it for ten just to you know, to focus
- 11:31Speaker 1: on that. But someone who I think like if you
- 11:35Speaker 1: did like eleven like honorable mentions, Larry June. Okay, okay,
- 11:41Speaker 1: that Larry June project, it might make the list. Hey,
- 11:44Speaker 1: Larry June is crazy put he put a whole album
- 11:46Speaker 1: out with Bernard too. He had a crazy year, Larry June.
- 11:49Speaker 1: That Keep Going project is fire Yes, James the Price
- 11:53Speaker 1: of Team James had a crazy year. Uh Smoke Dizza
- 11:57Speaker 1: his album fire Like. There's a lot of rappers that
- 12:00Speaker 1: I personally like, but I can't necessarily put them on
- 12:03Speaker 1: the best Rapper list because I feel like they had
- 12:05Speaker 1: the skill, but did they have the presence or did
- 12:09Speaker 1: they have you know, the performance on tracks. I'm just
- 12:11Speaker 1: I'm trying to be objective and also subjective at the
- 12:14Speaker 1: same time. So now, somebody who I didn't include in
- 12:18Speaker 1: my top ten lists because technically his album came out
- 12:21Speaker 1: in January or December of last year. And someone who
- 12:25Speaker 1: I consider to have the best melodies in all of
- 12:28Speaker 1: hip hop is Roddy Rich And I know a lot
- 12:32Speaker 1: of people have been you know, and I don't disagree
- 12:34Speaker 1: with anybody who thinks Roddy Rich should be on that list.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I just kind of I think Roddy Rich is one
- 12:39Speaker 1: of the best songmakers period. I agree. I think Roddy
- 12:44Speaker 1: Rich is a better Roddy Rich. Correct, you know what?
- 12:48Speaker 1: He can no for sure, But I've also believe he's
- 12:51Speaker 1: like a product of twenty nineteen more so than twenty twenty.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And his album lived a lot this year. Man, it did,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but it came out last year, right right. That's that's
- 13:02Speaker 1: just how I base it off. And also, I don't
- 13:04Speaker 1: think when I think of best rappers like I don't
- 13:08Speaker 1: for me, I don't put Roddy Rich in that category.
- 13:10Speaker 1: He's not a person that comes to mind make a
- 13:13Speaker 1: great song. But what I'm thinking, like the best rappers
- 13:15Speaker 1: is going to go, it's not necessarily Roddy Rich. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna give you a quick rundown of my ten.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I got Freddy Gibbs at one, Okay, I got Conway
- 13:26Speaker 1: at two. So so far we're two for two on
- 13:28Speaker 1: our list, all right, I'm with it. Benny at three, okay,
- 13:32Speaker 1: with three for three, Mazi at four. Hmmm, So we
- 13:39Speaker 1: got to start putting some respect on Mazzi's name. Man,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I like, he put out two great albums this year.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I like, and he's like, to me, the one guy.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Obviously he's from Sacramento, but like when it comes to
- 13:52Speaker 1: like the West Coast, shiit like, I feel like he
- 13:55Speaker 1: is the guy who everybody respects, who you'll meet as
- 13:59Speaker 1: a rapper too. So I got Mazzi high on my list. Man,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm not mad at that I got Big Sean at five.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I really enjoyed Detroit too. I really enjoyed his presence
- 14:09Speaker 1: on a lot of other people's records. Obviously full things
- 14:11Speaker 1: with Gibbs, we did we have big Yeah, okay, yeah four,
- 14:18Speaker 1: So things are gonna get real different then here I got.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I got Royce to five nine at six, okay, And
- 14:24Speaker 1: I don't think Royce major list. I was thinking about
- 14:27Speaker 1: Royce too, But what did it What prevented Royce from
- 14:31Speaker 1: making the list is the fact that he put out
- 14:33Speaker 1: I liked Allegory, but I also think if it wasn't
- 14:36Speaker 1: for the Grammys, that album would have been forgotten about.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And after Allegory, I don't think he really did anything
- 14:42Speaker 1: else throughout the year. He was kind of silent. Yeah,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I mean he was on Shawn's album I Mean He
- 14:46Speaker 1: He also he also I Mean Look. I also go
- 14:48Speaker 1: back to the Minem album he Gassed the m album.
- 14:50Speaker 1: He produced on the album I'm Gonna Go Killer Mike
- 14:53Speaker 1: at seven Run the Jewels four is an incredible album
- 14:57Speaker 1: to me, So I got Killer Mike at seven. I'm
- 15:00Speaker 1: at that, I think is one of the best rap
- 15:02Speaker 1: songs of the year. Walking on the Snow is the
- 15:03Speaker 1: one for me, man, the one with a thanks to
- 15:05Speaker 1: Boo on the hook, another artist who's not on your list.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I got Busted Rhymes at eight. Really, yeah, man, I
- 15:11Speaker 1: really loved E l E too. Man, you liked that album.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it. Bro I hated the album felt
- 15:18Speaker 1: like homework. You hated the album. I hated it really.
- 15:22Speaker 1: It was when it was too long and busted. Just
- 15:25Speaker 1: to me, it just felt like it was moments where
- 15:27Speaker 1: he was spinning. I like the record with him in rhapsody,
- 15:29Speaker 1: but in totality the record the album just felt like
- 15:33Speaker 1: he was just yelling and it felt like just you
- 15:36Speaker 1: and you know, when you're trying to enjoy yourself at
- 15:38Speaker 1: the club, someone's trying to fish yo yo, all right,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I get see you. I got to mistake this out. Yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the Bust album. I'm probably I'm a
- 15:48Speaker 1: lot higher on the bus Rymes album than you are.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Then I really enjoyed it. Man, Okay. I got Rust
- 15:54Speaker 1: at nine okay, and then I got a Little Baby
- 15:57Speaker 1: at ten. Wow. Okay. Little Baby is an artist who
- 16:02Speaker 1: I never ever thought would make this list in my
- 16:05Speaker 1: entire life, based on like it being called the best rappers.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But man, if he didn't have a hell of a year. Uh,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and you know, he also probably gets most Improved of
- 16:18Speaker 1: the Year too, most improved player. Oh yeah, absolutely, like
- 16:22Speaker 1: little Bait. If this, if we did the Hottest MCS list,
- 16:25Speaker 1: you'd probably be number one, two and three hottest. Yeah.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I think it's like him pop smoke and uh and
- 16:31Speaker 1: probably righty rich and and and then you know you're
- 16:33Speaker 1: probably feeling the baby and and who am I forgetting
- 16:37Speaker 1: that would be in that. I think Megan would make
- 16:39Speaker 1: that list. Megan maybe, UZI Yeah, like that's a hot artist.
- 16:45Speaker 1: That's the hottest list, which we used to get pissed
- 16:47Speaker 1: off about what MTV would do, but it's a different conversation. Yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you was on that panel, yep, yep, And I remember
- 16:57Speaker 1: voting for Drake and they voted for Kanye. But that
- 17:00Speaker 1: was that. That was like four years ago. Yeah. So
- 17:02Speaker 1: some of my honorable mentions are Boldie James. Okay, Boldie's nice. Yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 1: he had a crazy year. I also, of course, uh,
- 17:17Speaker 1: west Side Gun. I think we have to just salute
- 17:20Speaker 1: his body of work for the year. Pray for Paris.
- 17:25Speaker 1: That's that's that's on the list. I'll give you. It's
- 17:27Speaker 1: on my list too. On the list, Yeah, it's pretty
- 17:30Speaker 1: high on my list. Also, I gotta I gotta show
- 17:35Speaker 1: some love to Eminem. I actually thought Eminem's album was
- 17:38Speaker 1: his best album in like ten years. I really liked Recovery.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I liked Recovery a lot. Yeah, but Recovery was two
- 17:48Speaker 1: thousand and that was the one with like he was
- 17:50Speaker 1: like walking walking down the road and Ship that was
- 17:52Speaker 1: like twenty ten. Yeah, that was a long time ago.
- 17:55Speaker 1: That was twenty ten. And since Recovery, really it's been
- 17:58Speaker 1: a whole lot of bullshit. Shouts Eminem shouts Paul No.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I love Eminem. He's one of my favorite rappers ever.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And I feel like with this album, I finally was like, yes,
- 18:11Speaker 1: this is the Eminem album that I just wanted him
- 18:14Speaker 1: to make all the features. They didn't sound forced. It
- 18:18Speaker 1: was a step in the right direction. The intro I
- 18:19Speaker 1: remember listening to that. I thought that was crazy. You know,
- 18:22Speaker 1: so Eminem, that was definitely I think to your point,
- 18:25Speaker 1: it was probably the best album in a while. He
- 18:28Speaker 1: toned down the like forced ballads with a Skylar Gray
- 18:32Speaker 1: and you know, Pink and Rihanna and you know whoever
- 18:35Speaker 1: the hell it was just like bro if I when
- 18:39Speaker 1: when when the track listing came out and I saw
- 18:41Speaker 1: her name on the track listing, I lost my fucking mind.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I was like, guys, will someone tell Eminem to stop
- 18:47Speaker 1: putting this fucking girl on records. I haven't listened to
- 18:56Speaker 1: the B side. They came out at nine o'clock last night.
- 18:58Speaker 1: But nonetheless, I did think, you know, I throw emm
- 19:00Speaker 1: in the honorable mention, NOAs in the honorable mention Jay
- 19:03Speaker 1: electing the honorable mention. I hope kind of watched him
- 19:05Speaker 1: on that album, but you know, you know, shout out
- 19:08Speaker 1: to Jay Electronical. But yeah, I think I think, how
- 19:10Speaker 1: about this for the year? Do you think this was? Like?
- 19:13Speaker 1: I feel like this is one of the best years
- 19:15Speaker 1: in recent memory as far as like just the quality
- 19:18Speaker 1: of music we got. Oh absolutely. I think there was
- 19:20Speaker 1: a lot of great moments, a lot of great music
- 19:23Speaker 1: that came out, and a lot of it probably just
- 19:25Speaker 1: didn't get the exposure deserve. But if you were a
- 19:28Speaker 1: Rat fan, you know where to find a good shit. Man, Like,
- 19:31Speaker 1: there was great music all around the board for sure.
- 19:34Speaker 1: All right, So look your your albums of the Year list.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It should be out by now. Yeah, I'm about to
- 19:40Speaker 1: put out maybe like in a few hours. Well so yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 1: so this is gonna come out Monday, so so so
- 19:45Speaker 1: this will already have been out. So let's go over.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna run through my list, then you go through
- 19:49Speaker 1: your list. I bet all right. I got Alfredo's number one.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I got RTJ FOROS two, I got Prayed for Paris
- 19:59Speaker 1: at three. Wow, Okay, Wow, this is different than I
- 20:03Speaker 1: got From a King to a God at four. Okay,
- 20:07Speaker 1: Burden of Proof at five? Blast no Love Lost, but
- 20:16Speaker 1: see it's Blast. He's like, yeah, you know what, all right,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I'll tell you what. He's just one of my favorite
- 20:24Speaker 1: albums of the year. So we're talking rap albums. We
- 20:26Speaker 1: can we can move him over. So what was that?
- 20:30Speaker 1: That was six? So then I got Detroit two at six. Okay,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I got Detroit too at six. You and I both
- 20:38Speaker 1: have the same sentiments about Big Show. Love that album, man,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Love that fucking album. I got my turn at seven.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Me too, so I since I bumped something out, Okay,
- 20:53Speaker 1: where are we at this? It is hard, man, I'm
- 20:57Speaker 1: still wrestling with my list, if you want to be honest.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I got at eight The Allegory from Royce. I really
- 21:08Speaker 1: enjoyed that album. At nine, King's Disease. Wow Nazi. Mhmm,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you're a Nazi man. Why you haven't you have a
- 21:19Speaker 1: higher heh yeah, they have a way higher. Hey, man,
- 21:23Speaker 1: I love the album. Nas is my favorite rapper ever, right,
- 21:27Speaker 1: so like trust me, like I love NAS. You know
- 21:30Speaker 1: what I'm saying. I didn't listen to jay Z for
- 21:32Speaker 1: like twelve months of my childhood because of the best. Yeah. Uh.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And then like, well, since we kind of bump some
- 21:39Speaker 1: shit out, I think ten I have some honorable mentions
- 21:42Speaker 1: that I have to slide in. But I kind of
- 21:44Speaker 1: got my honorable mentions as a savage MO two Meet
- 21:51Speaker 1: Meet the WU two and I really an album that
- 21:53Speaker 1: I don't think a lot of people talk about that
- 21:56Speaker 1: was really really solid that I just have as an
- 21:58Speaker 1: honorable mention. I think people at least you know, tip
- 22:01Speaker 1: tip their hat to is. A Minai's album Limbo was
- 22:03Speaker 1: really good. Someone else told me about A Mionnai's album.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Amenai's album is fucking fire Man. Yeah. I had to
- 22:09Speaker 1: do a deep dilbum Amne. Yeah, honestly, like his album was.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Like I was driving back from San Diego and I
- 22:15Speaker 1: just hit play on that bitch and I was like, Damn,
- 22:17Speaker 1: this shit is solid, like you no skips? Yeah, what
- 22:21Speaker 1: do you got? So for me? Again, this is still tentative.
- 22:25Speaker 1: It's written in pencil. Okay, pencil shout out to pencils
- 22:28Speaker 1: in twenty twenty so I got number one Freddy Gibbs Alfredo,
- 22:33Speaker 1: number two, Conway the Machine from King to a God.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Three Stove God cooks Oo Stove, got good Reasonable Drought,
- 22:42Speaker 1: number four, Benny the Butcher, Burning a Proof, five Nas
- 22:46Speaker 1: King Disease, six Big Sean Detroit two, seven, Little Baby,
- 22:50Speaker 1: My Turn, eight Pray for Paris. Now. Nine to ten
- 22:55Speaker 1: is where it's getting kind of hard. Certainly, it's getting
- 22:58Speaker 1: very hard and writing at right now it says Larry June,
- 23:04Speaker 1: keep going. Number ten Jack Harlow. That's what they all say.
- 23:09Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is I wrote this list last night,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and I thought about this list last week in can
- 23:18Speaker 1: Kun when his I was in can' kuon bumping his
- 23:20Speaker 1: album on the beach. Yeah, and you're right about Jack Harlow.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I got to I think because you know how I
- 23:26Speaker 1: said my ten spot was kind of a floater, Like
- 23:28Speaker 1: I think I might have to slide Jack Harlow into
- 23:30Speaker 1: that ten spot. Man, I'm not mad, Like I didn't
- 23:33Speaker 1: know what to think going into it, but I'm listening
- 23:35Speaker 1: to it. I'm like, I'm at like third track thirteen,
- 23:38Speaker 1: I'm like, wait, I didn't even skip anything, Like there's
- 23:41Speaker 1: no skips. It's a very easy listen. He's saying some
- 23:43Speaker 1: fly shit he could rap re production like like DJ
- 23:48Speaker 1: Drama Cannon, like we're involved, you know what I'm saying.
- 23:51Speaker 1: It's not like they let them out, let him out
- 23:53Speaker 1: to do what he wanted, like I felt like it
- 23:54Speaker 1: was really A and R to produced. Well, I'm not
- 23:57Speaker 1: mad at that Jack Harlow album. That Jack Carlo album
- 24:00Speaker 1: is solid. It's really good. Yeah, man, I think I think, yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think that that might be my I mean, that
- 24:07Speaker 1: might be my ten. Uh but but like I got,
- 24:09Speaker 1: I've totally forgot about that album because it obviously just
- 24:11Speaker 1: came out. So when I put this list in it
- 24:13Speaker 1: and even yeah just came out last week. Yeah, Jack
- 24:16Speaker 1: Carlon heard it, I was like, Yo, what the fuck?
- 24:20Speaker 1: Like this guy is he's spitting So somebody else you
- 24:24Speaker 1: mentioned that is from over here, and by over here,
- 24:28Speaker 1: I me in the West Coast is Larry June. And
- 24:30Speaker 1: I feel like it's dope to see you know, we
- 24:32Speaker 1: always hear that. Uh you know, you guys over in
- 24:34Speaker 1: New York are a little biased, I've heard, yeah, but
- 24:38Speaker 1: but Larry June, it has has had a hell of
- 24:41Speaker 1: a career, you know what I'm saying, building up his
- 24:44Speaker 1: fan base, and I feel like it's dope to see
- 24:46Speaker 1: him get some real respect. Yeah, I've got hit to
- 24:49Speaker 1: Larry June this year. And then like a lot of
- 24:51Speaker 1: people that I respect as far outside of music, they
- 24:55Speaker 1: about like, yo, listener is Larry June. Guy, He's talking
- 24:58Speaker 1: about finances and like real life shit and like you yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 1: you know good and Orgain. I was like, I don't
- 25:05Speaker 1: get this guy shot right right right, you know. So
- 25:08Speaker 1: I'm listening to them, I'm like, Yo, this guy is
- 25:09Speaker 1: like picking up where Jeez left off as far as
- 25:12Speaker 1: thud motivation really inspiring. He's motivating. He's telling you how
- 25:17Speaker 1: to get money and just stop chasing women and things
- 25:19Speaker 1: that I think that are really important for you know,
- 25:22Speaker 1: consumer's ears in twenty twenty. So when I heard his
- 25:25Speaker 1: album with Harry Fraud keep going, I'm like, oh, this
- 25:30Speaker 1: shit is hard man. Definitely it's Larry jum Man. Yes, hey,
- 25:34Speaker 1: so let me ask you this man, you did your
- 25:37Speaker 1: your YO. One more thing. I gotta ask, how did
- 25:39Speaker 1: Little Wayne get on your list this year? You don't
- 25:42Speaker 1: think Lil Wayne was spinning? I don't know. I mean,
- 25:46Speaker 1: his timeless feature was solid. You had it. You were
- 25:49Speaker 1: a lot stronger on that than probably anyone YO. I heard.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, Wade is going fucking super saying,
- 25:56Speaker 1: I just can't think of the Little Wayne song that
- 25:59Speaker 1: I was like, I wouldn't say necessarily is defined by
- 26:02Speaker 1: a song, per se. I just can't think of the project.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, let me go listen to Funeral
- 26:07Speaker 1: or let me go listen to fucking No Ceilings three.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I think he was spitting on Funeral. I think he
- 26:12Speaker 1: was spitting on No Ceilings three as well, and also
- 26:15Speaker 1: like the feature on Jack Hollow. Uh. I think, what's
- 26:20Speaker 1: the other joint that he did? The Times feature. I
- 26:22Speaker 1: feel like Wayne still rat at a high level. Now,
- 26:26Speaker 1: would I say The Funeral was one of the best
- 26:27Speaker 1: albums of the year. No, but I tell you had
- 26:30Speaker 1: him kind of high. Man Cutting High might have been
- 26:32Speaker 1: number nine. Way would have been number ten. If it
- 26:34Speaker 1: wasn't for Stole Duk, you should have been like fifteen.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Way would have been really low. Everyone thinks I hate
- 26:41Speaker 1: Little Wayne already. By the way, I'm a huge Little
- 26:43Speaker 1: Wayne fan. I'm not biased. I love Little Wayne. Everyone
- 26:46Speaker 1: thinks I hate him because I because you know, I'm
- 26:50Speaker 1: very critical of Little Wayne, because I'm like, you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: I think Wayne is incredible, one of the greatest of
- 26:55Speaker 1: all time. Right, I probably don't have him ranked as
- 26:58Speaker 1: high as most, But I just feel like after Carter three,
- 27:03Speaker 1: he's after really the first No Ceilings, because it was
- 27:05Speaker 1: Carter three then the first No Ceilings, He's just kind
- 27:07Speaker 1: of left me a little empty as a fan, where
- 27:11Speaker 1: I've just been like wanting more, if that makes sense.
- 27:14Speaker 1: You know. Carter four was a little disappointing. It had
- 27:16Speaker 1: some great singles, Carter five was a lot, you know,
- 27:21Speaker 1: it was just a lot. I still can't even think
- 27:23Speaker 1: of the Carter five, Like I've listened to it maybe
- 27:25Speaker 1: twice through and that's it. But I just I saw
- 27:28Speaker 1: Wayne on your list kind of high, and I was like, hmmm, nine,
- 27:33Speaker 1: you know, I think that was a fair I feel
- 27:35Speaker 1: like it feels like the old man Stills got it,
- 27:37Speaker 1: you know, like he's still rapped. So that's why I
- 27:39Speaker 1: had him at that place. Yeah, I think if you're
- 27:42Speaker 1: putting Wayne on that list, you got to put M
- 27:43Speaker 1: on that list, you think so. I think M's album
- 27:47Speaker 1: was very listenable, man. I think I think M's like
- 27:50Speaker 1: if I did like a Top twenty, It'll be a
- 27:52Speaker 1: little bit more room, that's fair. It'd be a little
- 27:55Speaker 1: a lot more room to not offend people exactly. You
- 27:58Speaker 1: know which rapper got the most offended by your list?
- 28:01Speaker 1: It was either Russ and Stove got Cooks. They were offended.
- 28:05Speaker 1: They well, no, are you talking about no, no, no, no no, no.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I know people hated the fact you put on your list.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm talking about like, there was a lot of people
- 28:12Speaker 1: who were commenting on this ship. Was there someone in
- 28:15Speaker 1: particular that kind of caught feelings that you were like,
- 28:17Speaker 1: I mean, you know, yeah, I would have said he
- 28:19Speaker 1: called feelings, but he was bothered by his exclusion or omission,
- 28:24Speaker 1: which was Ransom, And I was, Yo, another honorable mention,
- 28:28Speaker 1: Ransom had a good year. But that's the thing, is like,
- 28:32Speaker 1: in no disrespect to Ransom, but I just didn't know.
- 28:34Speaker 1: And I know a lot of rap fans. I know
- 28:37Speaker 1: a lot of people. No one throughout this Zeer had said, Yo,
- 28:40Speaker 1: you need to check this Ransom project. You know what
- 28:42Speaker 1: I'm saying. It's like a lot of times, you gotta
- 28:46Speaker 1: you gotta look at yourself, like, yo, am I doing
- 28:48Speaker 1: enough to create awareness? And I always say this too,
- 28:52Speaker 1: Sometimes it's harder to create the interest in the actual music.
- 28:56Speaker 1: So if there's no interest there, who the fuck is?
- 28:59Speaker 1: And I'm sure Ransom spinning his ass off, But it's like, dog,
- 29:03Speaker 1: if I'm making the best rap list right, and my
- 29:06Speaker 1: criteria is based on skill, which I'm sure Ransom has
- 29:08Speaker 1: of course on a track, and also presence, I think
- 29:13Speaker 1: blacks a lot in that in that department. That's fair. Yeah,
- 29:18Speaker 1: I think it's funny because I really wasn't hip to
- 29:20Speaker 1: the year he was having until I heard, like Mall
- 29:23Speaker 1: or somebody on the on the Joe Budden podcast say like, yo,
- 29:26Speaker 1: he might be the MVP of the year. I was like, yoh,
- 29:28Speaker 1: let me go listen to what he's been doing, right,
- 29:30Speaker 1: and he's definitely had a very productive here. But yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I definitely can see how people who saw that list
- 29:36Speaker 1: the first person that they probably would be like what
- 29:39Speaker 1: the fuck Russ at four? That's the thing is like,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I'm like, are you listening to what this? They're not.
- 29:45Speaker 1: They're not, they're not. And it bugged me out when
- 29:48Speaker 1: I went to the clubhouse room and people were debating
- 29:51Speaker 1: on the list and then asked him like Russ, like
- 29:53Speaker 1: he's a fucking alien. I'm like, oh, you guys working
- 29:55Speaker 1: in music business, like you guys act like you don't
- 29:57Speaker 1: who the fuck this guy is. He's got more plaques
- 29:58Speaker 1: than your favorite rapper who you're managing, Like this guy
- 30:02Speaker 1: is super relevant, Like he's been consistent, he's dropping music.
- 30:06Speaker 1: He's been dropping music this whole year, dude, it's crazy.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Come on, man, you gotta put some respect on Russ's name.
- 30:11Speaker 1: And he was about to take Benny on an arena tour.
- 30:14Speaker 1: That's what I'm come on, man, Like it's it's crazy,
- 30:18Speaker 1: what's been your favorite moment of the year hip hop wise?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Because there's been a lot with verses and obviously some
- 30:24Speaker 1: certain projects, but you know, I'll give you mine. Mine is.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I really enjoyed the Gucci Jeezy Versus. I thought that
- 30:30Speaker 1: that was that was like crazy, could believe it was happening.
- 30:35Speaker 1: But what about yours? My favorite rap moment this year?
- 30:40Speaker 1: Versus definitely is up there. I think, Uh, what else
- 30:46Speaker 1: happened this year? Shit? You put me on a spotcast.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Now I'm drawing a blank. Uh shit, before the world
- 30:54Speaker 1: went to an end, the Rock Nation Brunch, I guess
- 30:56Speaker 1: if that counts. I'm not invited to such things. So
- 31:00Speaker 1: it was for me because it's like you know, you've
- 31:02Speaker 1: seen it's like the hip hop prom right, So remember
- 31:05Speaker 1: Conway was there and he was dressed up and Rihanna
- 31:07Speaker 1: was there. I was like, yo, I'm introduced you to Rihanna.
- 31:10Speaker 1: He's like, we're so just like trying to coordinate that together.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That was for me. What's another good hip hop moment?
- 31:20Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm drawing a blink right now. This
- 31:22Speaker 1: is gonna question that I'm going to think about after
- 31:24Speaker 1: I hang up. And be like, shit, I forgot Yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 1: For me, it's definitely the verses. And then just like
- 31:27Speaker 1: on a personal level, I got to see, uh, you know,
- 31:30Speaker 1: I went to the Griselda shows here in La right
- 31:32Speaker 1: before the pandemic happened. M And you know, Conway performing
- 31:37Speaker 1: the Cow Crying and Ship while a was standing out
- 31:39Speaker 1: the side of the stage was crazy to witness right
- 31:42Speaker 1: that was. I mean, I always love him when he
- 31:43Speaker 1: performs that song. So I miss shows, man, Ship remember shows?
- 31:47Speaker 1: I know, yo, if you want to go to Atlanta
- 31:50Speaker 1: or South Carolina or you know wherever down there all
- 31:54Speaker 1: those Red States, Man, they're still happening. I promise. Did
- 31:57Speaker 1: you see the NBA Young Boys show that happened like
- 31:59Speaker 1: last week? Yo? And what pandemic they got the cure
- 32:02Speaker 1: down there? Man, Bro Bro, It's crazy. I'm like that
- 32:06Speaker 1: happened yesterday. When this ship is over, man, I am
- 32:11Speaker 1: not missing out on nothing. I'm going to every listening,
- 32:14Speaker 1: every concert. If it happens in the basement, I want in.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I'm not hey. I think. I think when if south
- 32:21Speaker 1: By ever comes back, it's fin to go up again
- 32:24Speaker 1: like it used to. Man. I feel like everybody wants
- 32:28Speaker 1: to experience live advents against so someone who neither of
- 32:32Speaker 1: us mentioned who we just talked about, Randon like real
- 32:37Speaker 1: quick who. I think a lot of younger people would
- 32:40Speaker 1: would take offense to us not saying his name for
- 32:43Speaker 1: whatever reason. I don't got him on my list. You
- 32:46Speaker 1: don't got him on but NBA young Boy, Yeah, I
- 32:50Speaker 1: don't think he's like the best, Like when I think
- 32:53Speaker 1: it's the best rapper, I don't think NBA Young Boy
- 32:55Speaker 1: comes to mind. I listened to his album he dropped.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I think he dropped like four projects as you're something
- 33:00Speaker 1: some some some insane am out. I listened to the
- 33:03Speaker 1: last one and and he's doing the numbers. I don't
- 33:07Speaker 1: care about the numbers. You know what I'm saying. I
- 33:08Speaker 1: mean I think that tells a story. I don't think
- 33:10Speaker 1: it tells the whole story. Uh, he's super popular, like
- 33:15Speaker 1: you said on YouTube, and but I just don't. I
- 33:17Speaker 1: wasn't blown away by anything that he said. There wasn't
- 33:20Speaker 1: nothing that was like yo, guys, let me press the
- 33:24Speaker 1: rewind button. I didn't get that from Yeah. I enjoy
- 33:27Speaker 1: some of his ship because obviously, like I'm a club DJ,
- 33:29Speaker 1: so there's certain ship that like I'm like yo, this
- 33:30Speaker 1: ship goes up. But like as far as like this year,
- 33:33Speaker 1: I haven't heard some NBA young boy shit that like
- 33:36Speaker 1: was like damn, that ship was hard, Like it's just
- 33:38Speaker 1: maybe it's just not for me. Some look some of
- 33:40Speaker 1: this ship I've realized by the way, I still haven't
- 33:44Speaker 1: listened to Uzzi's album, so I let my son tell
- 33:48Speaker 1: me about it. I'm just like yo already, you know.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I just I've kind of just maybe that ship that's
- 33:54Speaker 1: that on my behalf, like I probably should tap in with.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of it, you know that I've
- 33:57Speaker 1: like that that I've listened to, but I have like
- 34:00Speaker 1: sat down and press play and just let a ride. Yeah,
- 34:05Speaker 1: I know, like I kind of know what you're getting
- 34:07Speaker 1: into when you listen to the Uzi album, Like it's
- 34:10Speaker 1: like the thing is Uzi correct well, but I don't
- 34:13Speaker 1: think he showcases it that much on his albums. On
- 34:15Speaker 1: the Future project that he did, he had that song
- 34:17Speaker 1: all about that he really went in like, Okay, give
- 34:20Speaker 1: me more of this Uzi. But he's more like vibes
- 34:24Speaker 1: and things like that. But I wouldn't put Uzi in
- 34:26Speaker 1: my best rapper list. I couldn't do that real quick
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's crazy because the most memorable verses that I can
- 34:35Speaker 1: think of this year. When I say verses, I don't
- 34:37Speaker 1: mean the battle with like people's verses. They they're they're free.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Like to me, that the one that Now, mind you,
- 34:45Speaker 1: I really have to sit down and think about this,
- 34:47Speaker 1: but I think of Conway fire in the Booth. That's
- 34:54Speaker 1: you know what when you asked me about moment, that's
- 34:55Speaker 1: what I wanted to say. Conway's freestyle on Charlie Slow
- 35:00Speaker 1: Wow Brouh. I watched that once a week. I do too.
- 35:05Speaker 1: You know. Also, I also watched your joint with Freddy
- 35:07Speaker 1: Gibbs when he did last year. Oh yeah, you know
- 35:09Speaker 1: what you know. Funny story about that is fred came
- 35:11Speaker 1: to the studio and was like, uh, like we were
- 35:14Speaker 1: doing an interview and then I was like, yo, you
- 35:15Speaker 1: know you gotta rap right, and he literally wrote that
- 35:18Speaker 1: ship in like five minutes and then nailed it. Yeah.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Like he was like, yo, pick a beat, So we
- 35:24Speaker 1: picked the Drake money in the grave and then he
- 35:26Speaker 1: was like just let me, let me chill in here
- 35:28Speaker 1: for five minutes and just come up with something. And
- 35:30Speaker 1: then he was like, come back in and then he
- 35:32Speaker 1: laid it down no ship. Yeah, he didn't come to
- 35:36Speaker 1: the station that day with the expectations to rap, and
- 35:38Speaker 1: then he laid down some crazy shit. That's amazing as
- 35:42Speaker 1: a fucking mutant, Like that's I thought that was like prepared,
- 35:46Speaker 1: nah bro, yeah, no, Fred's a fucking alien brow. And
- 35:50Speaker 1: then obviously you know he did La Leakers freestyle last year,
- 35:52Speaker 1: which was fucking crazy. He had his baby on his
- 35:54Speaker 1: Yeah that's a week bro be an actual remix with
- 35:58Speaker 1: him in another verse that like it also is a
- 36:02Speaker 1: La Leakers versus this year, and that's the Simba freestyle. Man, Yo,
- 36:07Speaker 1: get out of my head, cav Yo. I was just
- 36:10Speaker 1: about to say, keV Simba is going to be a problem,
- 36:14Speaker 1: Like if I had to do an honorable mention, best
- 36:17Speaker 1: he's on that list. He's who Simba is. Amazing. That freestyle, Yo,
- 36:25Speaker 1: was fucking crazy. Is nice so many and just the
- 36:30Speaker 1: confidence and the and just the delivery of those lines
- 36:34Speaker 1: in that freestyle were so like And mind you, he's
- 36:37Speaker 1: a really good friend of mine, like really good close
- 36:40Speaker 1: like he was on our show like three years ago.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Like to give you some insight, like I've been known
- 36:43Speaker 1: Simba for a while, and man, his project is you know,
- 36:48Speaker 1: it's crazy because his project didn't come out the way
- 36:50Speaker 1: it was supposed to come out. So like two weeks
- 36:52Speaker 1: ago they were playing me some like they a lot
- 36:54Speaker 1: of the songs were on there, right, but like there's
- 36:56Speaker 1: there's a song called west Side Griselda that was supposed
- 36:58Speaker 1: to be on the album with him and Jason Cash
- 37:01Speaker 1: that because the samples didn't work out. But but yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 1: Simba's crazy. He's he's incredible, Like I'm interested to see
- 37:07Speaker 1: what he's going to do in twenty twenty one. Like
- 37:09Speaker 1: he's the kind of rap I like rappers like that.
- 37:11Speaker 1: It's like when you when I listen to him, it
- 37:13Speaker 1: makes me want to quit rapping and I can't even
- 37:15Speaker 1: rap right, Like what am I doing this for? It's like, fuck,
- 37:20Speaker 1: let me start from scratch, Like he's he's a rappers rap,
- 37:23Speaker 1: He's dope man, Like I want to get more in
- 37:25Speaker 1: tune to what he's got going on in twenty twenty one. Yeah,
- 37:28Speaker 1: I think he's gonna have a crazy year. And then
- 37:30Speaker 1: and then I think the Congrats Russ freestyle was probably
- 37:33Speaker 1: uh up there as well, I think though. And it's
- 37:35Speaker 1: crazy because those are the three that just come to
- 37:36Speaker 1: my head. And and and I'm not saying that there
- 37:38Speaker 1: aren't better verses, but it's like all three of those
- 37:40Speaker 1: verses are all from freestyles. Technically absolutely. The the congrats
- 37:44Speaker 1: joints from Russ is really dope. I listened to that
- 37:46Speaker 1: probably like once a week as well. Loved apsos verse
- 37:50Speaker 1: on You didn't put appsos verse on your on your features,
- 37:52Speaker 1: but I love that's the thing too. I wanted to
- 37:54Speaker 1: pick one from each album. That's fair. I want to
- 37:57Speaker 1: put multiple, but it could have easily. With Abs. I
- 38:00Speaker 1: went with the Crooked Eye because he set the tone. Yeah,
- 38:02Speaker 1: I just Crooked Eye just went ape ship on that.
- 38:05Speaker 1: That on Stockholm Syndrome. But I like Freddy gibbs Man.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Freddy gibbs on one hundred Ounce five hundred ounces on
- 38:14Speaker 1: west Side Guns album was that was the one where
- 38:16Speaker 1: he had the line about about take a load off
- 38:19Speaker 1: this load management, right, Yeah, yeah, that shit was crazy,
- 38:23Speaker 1: Like Marcy and West Side I love that beat. Alchemist
- 38:26Speaker 1: is a fucking fool. Uh he killed that joint. I
- 38:30Speaker 1: love Conway, Conway whatever. Conway and Freddy are like Canning Ryu,
- 38:35Speaker 1: Like I'm on the edge of my seat anytime he's rapping. Yeah,
- 38:37Speaker 1: Conway is is my He's my favorite, like when it
- 38:43Speaker 1: comes to just like his his his versatility to be
- 38:46Speaker 1: able to like just kill you with some crazy bars
- 38:48Speaker 1: or just give you like the most relatable verse about
- 38:51Speaker 1: some crazy traumatic ship. He's like, man, I know he's
- 38:56Speaker 1: not like the you know the most like Yo, Benny's
- 38:59Speaker 1: the guy right now, right Griselda, But I think Conway
- 39:01Speaker 1: is like like he's like the people's champ, if that
- 39:05Speaker 1: makes sense. He's right there, man. He played me a
- 39:08Speaker 1: record now on your show, keV. He's sitting on a hit.
- 39:13Speaker 1: He played me his entire Shady album, so I might
- 39:17Speaker 1: have heard it. Maybe. How long would he play for you?
- 39:22Speaker 1: A couple couple of weeks ago? Okay, okay, he might
- 39:24Speaker 1: be something new, yeah, because he was up here in
- 39:26Speaker 1: probably October September and he played me like this was
- 39:31Speaker 1: before his album dropped, so it was like a couple
- 39:33Speaker 1: weeks prior. But then he played me his whole fucking
- 39:36Speaker 1: the whole Shady Records debut. Yeah, that's the same one
- 39:39Speaker 1: I heard. He has a record. I said it on live,
- 39:42Speaker 1: so it's not a secret. He has a record produced
- 39:44Speaker 1: by hip Maker and produced by hip Maker with oh
- 39:50Speaker 1: you know he played me some other ship that was
- 39:55Speaker 1: I want to say Jeremiah was on the hook or something,
- 39:58Speaker 1: and he was like I heard. He was like, I
- 40:00Speaker 1: don't think. I don't think we can get this one
- 40:01Speaker 1: clear though, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I heard. That's a monster.
- 40:03Speaker 1: But this is what I'm talking about. I didn't hear
- 40:05Speaker 1: the stuff on don record, but Yo, it's crazy because
- 40:07Speaker 1: we did talk about a lot of the records, like
- 40:09Speaker 1: because we did like an hour long interview and I
- 40:11Speaker 1: was just talking about both albums he had just played me.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Now there was out. So he's got some big features,
- 40:17Speaker 1: and you know, I'm excited for him. Man, shout out
- 40:19Speaker 1: to Conway. I think Grizzella's gonna have even I mean,
- 40:21Speaker 1: Benny's got two records with Drake Tucked like I heard those.
- 40:25Speaker 1: But you know what it is about this year too.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I love what Benny, the Whope, Grizelda Movement, Russ and
- 40:32Speaker 1: Freddie have been doing this year. It's like they're stockpiling
- 40:36Speaker 1: this ammunition. A lot of rappers took a break this year, man,
- 40:39Speaker 1: but these guys have been consistently working and I feel
- 40:42Speaker 1: like twenty twenty one, once we get through this pandemic,
- 40:44Speaker 1: it's gonna be a big breakout year for those guys
- 40:47Speaker 1: because of the music that they have been putting out.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Do you think also like the This is what I
- 40:51Speaker 1: told Fred and Benny. I was like, you know, what's
- 40:54Speaker 1: dope about twenty twenty. Obviously it sucks you can't hit
- 40:57Speaker 1: the road, but you know, people are listening to music different.
- 41:00Speaker 1: They listening to it in their headphones, They're listening to
- 41:02Speaker 1: it in their car because they're driving uber all day.
- 41:04Speaker 1: They're not standing on couches. Yep, you know what I mean.
- 41:07Speaker 1: And so I feel like this year it was a
- 41:10Speaker 1: special moment to like really like say something in your music.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely. I feel like, you know, people feel like
- 41:21Speaker 1: rap music only exists in the nightclub or in a
- 41:23Speaker 1: lounge places. Why I like to I'm not listening to
- 41:26Speaker 1: the turn up drink when I'm cleaning my house or
- 41:28Speaker 1: I'm in my car. I just wanted to listen to
- 41:30Speaker 1: some really good rap music with meaningful lyrics, just something entertaining.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And those guys have been doing that throughout this whole year.
- 41:38Speaker 1: So you know, like you said, people are listening a
- 41:41Speaker 1: little bit different. You know, I'm not mad at that, Like,
- 41:43Speaker 1: let's let's let's get back to the lyrics, you know,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and we can still have fun. We can still sing
- 41:47Speaker 1: throat Baby, but shout out to throat baby. Yeah. Let
- 41:52Speaker 1: me ask you this, what do you guys have like
- 41:56Speaker 1: like twenty what's your twenty twenty one looking like right now? Man,
- 42:00Speaker 1: I don't fucking know, keV. I mean, I thought twenty
- 42:04Speaker 1: twenty was gonna be the year. You know. Of course
- 42:06Speaker 1: we all did, no remember how how we thought twenty
- 42:09Speaker 1: nineteen was such a shitty year and everybody was posting
- 42:11Speaker 1: the memes about man, twenty nineteen, get it the fuck
- 42:13Speaker 1: up out of here. Twenty nineteen was fantastic. I was like, yo,
- 42:17Speaker 1: it's gonna get great, It's gonna be better for twenty twenty.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And then March, you know, the world went to shit. So,
- 42:22Speaker 1: you know, like I said, you're planning God laughs. But hopefully,
- 42:26Speaker 1: you know, twenty twenty one, we get the rap Radar
- 42:29Speaker 1: podcasts out of our hiatus stage and we will be
- 42:32Speaker 1: back with some new interviews and new conversations and just
- 42:36Speaker 1: two opportunities, you know, talking to artists and you know,
- 42:40Speaker 1: traveling across the country and getting these getting these interviews popping.
- 42:46Speaker 1: So when you guys, cause I do think the rap
- 42:49Speaker 1: Radar podcast as far as just raw interviews, right, I
- 42:53Speaker 1: feel like you guys do the best interviews. Cap. I
- 42:56Speaker 1: appreciate that. I like, I really mean that. And that's
- 43:00Speaker 1: with me having to get through Elliott's laugh whenever it happens,
- 43:03Speaker 1: you know, shout out to Elliott to go. But but
- 43:06Speaker 1: I do think like you guys, like legit, if we're
- 43:08Speaker 1: like just pound for pound, who's doing like the best interviews,
- 43:12Speaker 1: I feel like it's you guys, especially from like for
- 43:15Speaker 1: like a fan Like, I feel like you guys will
- 43:16Speaker 1: ask questions because your fans, and you'll ask those like
- 43:20Speaker 1: kind of little like super niche off the road questions
- 43:24Speaker 1: that only like maybe like a like the core hardcore
- 43:27Speaker 1: guys will like tap. That's what really what I appreciated
- 43:29Speaker 1: about that Drake interviews. You guys kind of touched on
- 43:32Speaker 1: a lot of shit that like nobody else would have
- 43:34Speaker 1: talked about in a Drake interview. Man, Like, I think
- 43:36Speaker 1: that's the thing too, Like you can attest to this.
- 43:39Speaker 1: You know, at the end of the day, you got
- 43:40Speaker 1: to be a fan, yeah, and you know, I think
- 43:44Speaker 1: that enthusiasm comes up comes across you know, in our
- 43:47Speaker 1: conversation so you know, I just I love it, man,
- 43:51Speaker 1: and I appreciate I appreciate the kind of words because
- 43:54Speaker 1: you know, we dedicate a lot of man hours into
- 43:56Speaker 1: preparing for these interviews and things like that, right right, yeah,
- 43:59Speaker 1: And he's like you said, I mean, there's and then
- 44:00Speaker 1: there's always the people you interviewed that you're not fans of,
- 44:02Speaker 1: which that they're always just there. There's just they're just
- 44:04Speaker 1: gonna be different conversations. Absolutely, and you know, sometimes you
- 44:07Speaker 1: become a fan of the person that you weren't a
- 44:09Speaker 1: fan of prior to So you know, I was just
- 44:12Speaker 1: humanizing an artist and you know, getting to know them
- 44:14Speaker 1: a little bit better. So that's fair man anything. Obviously,
- 44:19Speaker 1: rap Radar still ticking the blog era is you know,
- 44:21Speaker 1: let me ask you this, because you guys had one
- 44:23Speaker 1: of the biggest blogs ever. By the way, shout out
- 44:25Speaker 1: to you and and uh A, Maya and everybody at
- 44:29Speaker 1: rap Radar who always would support anything I was doing.
- 44:33Speaker 1: But you guys were one of the gatekeepers, right yeah,
- 44:39Speaker 1: for like eight or nine years. You guys could change
- 44:42Speaker 1: someone's career a few shout out hey, by the way,
- 44:47Speaker 1: it's crazy because I just I just tapped in with
- 44:49Speaker 1: three sixty again recently. But I know you were, you were,
- 44:53Speaker 1: you were involved. I was. I remember finding him on
- 44:55Speaker 1: on on a rap radar. But but but but where
- 44:59Speaker 1: is it? Like we always hear that the blog era
- 45:01Speaker 1: is dead, right, I mean I don't necessarily disagree, but like,
- 45:07Speaker 1: obviously rap rate are still a website. You guys still
- 45:09Speaker 1: post shit like it's still around. Shout to Paul Ak,
- 45:13Speaker 1: the big homie. He kind of keeps us afloat, and
- 45:15Speaker 1: you know, as far as that goes, it's still I
- 45:18Speaker 1: think that's the beauty of what the website still provides
- 45:20Speaker 1: is like a lot of these domains have expired or
- 45:23Speaker 1: they no longer exists and archives are gone, but you know,
- 45:26Speaker 1: our websites still up. Archives are still there, so you
- 45:29Speaker 1: could kind of go back and you know, check a
- 45:31Speaker 1: post from two thousand and nine or two thousands still there,
- 45:34Speaker 1: and I feel like that's good. You know, it's not
- 45:37Speaker 1: what it once was, but we still have a presence
- 45:40Speaker 1: and I think that's important. And you guys pivoted unlike
- 45:42Speaker 1: a lot of other people in that space. Yeah, you know,
- 45:46Speaker 1: I realized where the game was kind of going more
- 45:48Speaker 1: towards conversations and things and you know, shout out to
- 45:52Speaker 1: combat Jack, Rest in Peace, Combat want Epstein. They were
- 45:57Speaker 1: doing it, and I tell us I think we could.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I think could do this too. You know, we just
- 46:02Speaker 1: wanted to keep the brand. Could have named it anything.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I was like, let's just keep it for brand recognition,
- 46:05Speaker 1: to raperate our podcasts, and five years later, here we are.
- 46:09Speaker 1: What about you? What are What are some podcasts that
- 46:14Speaker 1: you actually like? Listen to it on a on a
- 46:15Speaker 1: regular basis. I listened to a little I try to
- 46:19Speaker 1: listen a little bit. Everybody listened to your yours as well.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Shameless plug. I listened to the lip service Joe Butden
- 46:27Speaker 1: whenever I can. That's just like a fucking movie. Yeah,
- 46:29Speaker 1: the Joe Button Ship. It's like, okay, am I going
- 46:31Speaker 1: on a road trip. Joe's great for a good road trip,
- 46:35Speaker 1: you know. I listened to Uh. I listened to Alec Baldwin. Uh.
- 46:40Speaker 1: He has his podcast called Here's the Thing. Okay, So
- 46:43Speaker 1: I just listen to whenever I can. You know, I'll
- 46:46Speaker 1: watch a lot of clips. The clips are are clutch
- 46:48Speaker 1: for me. Yeah, especially for the Joe but And Ship,
- 46:51Speaker 1: because I'd be like, oh cool, I could just hear
- 46:52Speaker 1: them talk about this album that came out and see
- 46:54Speaker 1: what they think. So I have to sit to four
- 46:56Speaker 1: hours listen to Charlamagne and of course it's you know,
- 47:02Speaker 1: my taste varies, Yeah, one hundred percent. Man. Well, look,
- 47:05Speaker 1: I appreciate you for for for checking in and and
- 47:09Speaker 1: and yeah. I was like, Yo, I gotta, I gotta,
- 47:11Speaker 1: we gotta do a year in podcast. It's like, there's
- 47:13Speaker 1: only really one person I want to talk to about
- 47:15Speaker 1: about this year before I let you go. Though, I'm
- 47:18Speaker 1: curious knowing the narrative about the the the East Coast biased,
- 47:25Speaker 1: I don't know, but this is what I'm asking you, right,
- 47:28Speaker 1: can we can you kind of give me, uh, you know,
- 47:31Speaker 1: maybe four or five artists? Now we already talked about
- 47:34Speaker 1: Larry June. So that's one right from this side, from
- 47:38Speaker 1: the West coast, from the state of California, could be
- 47:40Speaker 1: La to Bay wherever. Who are are really on your
- 47:43Speaker 1: radar so to speak, that you're fucking with l A.
- 47:46Speaker 1: I what I say, La, the West Coast got some
- 47:49Speaker 1: really good talent, I mean outside of the TD camp.
- 47:52Speaker 1: You know that's off bad of course, of course, but
- 47:55Speaker 1: I do like, you know, reason he could spit his
- 47:57Speaker 1: ass off. Of course, Larry June. Definitely a tap with Mazi.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Who else am I fucking with? I feel like I'm
- 48:06Speaker 1: missing some folks. I know I am, but I'm gonna
- 48:09Speaker 1: kick myself after Hey d Smokes project was solid too, man.
- 48:12Speaker 1: I mean he got no money for a Grammy, the smoking.
- 48:14Speaker 1: He gets busy as well, but those those are the
- 48:18Speaker 1: ones right now that stick out in my mind. Simba,
- 48:20Speaker 1: we talked about Timbo. He's from the bank symbol. I
- 48:22Speaker 1: think he's holding it down man like. He has potential
- 48:26Speaker 1: to really be something, you know, going to twenty twenty one.
- 48:28Speaker 1: So I'm trying to think, Oh, okay, I got to
- 48:30Speaker 1: put you onto some LA guys please. Uh There's a
- 48:34Speaker 1: there's a dude named Nana from out here Nana. He's
- 48:38Speaker 1: fire and a na. Yes, if you just go on
- 48:42Speaker 1: YouTube type in, he's got a song with reason. He's crazy.
- 48:47Speaker 1: There's another dude named Cokatry Walker that's super dope. He
- 48:51Speaker 1: put a project out called Idols this year. Write this
- 48:55Speaker 1: down and then, uh, I think this coming year you'll
- 48:58Speaker 1: really definitely, you know, Jason Cash will be a factor
- 49:02Speaker 1: out of l A. He's uh, he's signed with Dallas
- 49:08Speaker 1: and and and he's you know him and Simbar real close.
- 49:11Speaker 1: So but yeah, Katry Walker, Nana, those would be the two,
- 49:16Speaker 1: the two or three Jason Cash. But but check out
- 49:18Speaker 1: the Nana project. That ship is special. Definitely. Thank you,
- 49:23Speaker 1: Kevin all good. Thank you for your time, bro, and
- 49:25Speaker 1: and I've looked forward to seeing you break the internet
- 49:28Speaker 1: again with this album's list. Trust me, I think they're
- 49:32Speaker 1: gonna hate, They're gonna frive me to the state. Now.
- 49:35Speaker 1: I think we had a solid list, and I'm glad
- 49:37Speaker 1: you're as high on Big Sean as I was too.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Big Sean. Big Sean actually hit me about the list too.
- 49:42Speaker 1: He was like number five. Every time I read Big
- 49:45Speaker 1: Sewan's messages, I hear his so he's like number five,
- 49:49Speaker 1: what about this versus I'm like, se you nice. Detroit
- 49:53Speaker 1: two is crazy. I think it's his best project too.
- 49:56Speaker 1: I think it's I think I think I actually think
- 49:58Speaker 1: it's better than the first Detroit. And I always kind
- 50:01Speaker 1: of had that as his. It was like that or
- 50:03Speaker 1: Dark Sky Paradise. Yeah, you know, Big Seawan is nice
- 50:07Speaker 1: man like, he's got got to put some respect on
- 50:10Speaker 1: Big Sean. Yeah, listen, I always say when we when
- 50:12Speaker 1: we talk about the you know, there's the Mount Rushmore
- 50:14Speaker 1: and it's always Drake, Cole, Kendrick, and then I guess
- 50:18Speaker 1: you probably would put Travis up there for the last
- 50:21Speaker 1: three or four years. That's a conversation, man, right, And
- 50:25Speaker 1: if we're and and that's excluding the like Kanye and Hoves,
- 50:29Speaker 1: I think Sean is like the leader of that next tier, right,
- 50:33Speaker 1: here's a here's a hot take. I feel like if big, big, sure,
- 50:36Speaker 1: if Travis Scott had h if he was a lyrically
- 50:41Speaker 1: more inclined rapper at Drake Kendrick Coles, he would be
- 50:45Speaker 1: at that table. But as far as his notoriety and
- 50:49Speaker 1: celebrity and artistry, he's I would definitely say he's there
- 50:53Speaker 1: as well. I feel like he's the only person that
- 50:56Speaker 1: I thought had more. You know, Pek was like the
- 51:01Speaker 1: coolest dude in the world, like everyone dressed like Kanye.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I feel like Travis Scott for lack of better terms.
- 51:09Speaker 1: First of all, he makes great music. Yeah, like you said,
- 51:11Speaker 1: like like like lyrically, there's better rappers for sure, right,
- 51:15Speaker 1: but he makes amazing music. And I'm not sure anyone's
- 51:18Speaker 1: ever had the kids in his back pocket like he
- 51:20Speaker 1: has ever in hip hop. Travis is he's a fucking
- 51:24Speaker 1: cash cow. He's different right now, like he's got the
- 51:27Speaker 1: ear of the eighteen to twenty five year old. That's
- 51:31Speaker 1: a fact. Hey, hey, the last thing we're gonna leave
- 51:33Speaker 1: with I had. I had an argument maybe two days
- 51:36Speaker 1: ago with somebody. I just need you to let me
- 51:39Speaker 1: know if you agree or disagree. I said to somebody
- 51:42Speaker 1: that nobody in the history of hip hop was ever
- 51:47Speaker 1: bigger at their peak. I'm not talking about over their
- 51:53Speaker 1: span of their career or ten year run. I'm talking
- 51:55Speaker 1: about peak. Okay, then fifty cent and Snoop Dogg. I
- 52:00Speaker 1: think I agree with that because before you even said that,
- 52:03Speaker 1: I was thinking of the artist in my head. I
- 52:04Speaker 1: was like, you better say fifty cent. Yeah, it's fifty
- 52:06Speaker 1: and Snoop Doggy style era Snoop that like whatever year
- 52:10Speaker 1: and a half when when he had his murder charge
- 52:13Speaker 1: and then fifty cent. We haven't seen anything like that
- 52:16Speaker 1: at as far as peak peak. Yeah, I would agree
- 52:20Speaker 1: with that. I think that's a fact. Well it's beautiful,
- 52:23Speaker 1: hey man. Me and you are like, fucking you know
- 52:25Speaker 1: what our lists are. Definitely, you know, there's a few disconnects,
- 52:29Speaker 1: but I think we're pretty We're pretty fucking spot on
- 52:31Speaker 1: with a lot of opinions here. That's true. I think
- 52:34Speaker 1: if you're a Rat fan, it was peak like two
- 52:37Speaker 1: thousand and three, Oh my gosh, like, oh my god,
- 52:42Speaker 1: like what the fuck he was staying ouse at that time? Man, Yeah,
- 52:46Speaker 1: it's crazy. Yeah, people might be too young for Snoop Dogg,
- 52:49Speaker 1: but when Snoop Doggie style nineteen ninety three, like, come on, man,
- 52:55Speaker 1: you just had to be there, you had to be there.
- 52:57Speaker 1: And I was there, but I was like seven. You
- 52:58Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, I remember it, yo, beat out.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Thank you for checking in, man. I appreciate your time
- 53:04Speaker 1: and uh and look forward to what you guys got
- 53:06Speaker 1: coming for the new year. Man, yes, sir, thank you, man,
- 53:09Speaker 1: appreciate it all right, m hm
