- 0:55Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered.
- 1:00Speaker 2: The baseball season has made it to September. It's September 1st.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Hallelujah for me as a player whenever September hit, Rossi.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It was angry August was over and the light now
- 1:11Speaker 2: is at the end of the tunnel for the grind
- 1:14Speaker 2: and gauntlet of the season. Man, it's going to be
- 1:18Speaker 2: a good September, Rossi.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Hey, September, I always thought separate the men from the boys,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and we're about to hit that month where everybody's making
- 1:25Speaker 1: that playoff push. You're watching the standings. We're watching way more.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But before we get into what's going on immediately, I
- 1:34Speaker 1: want to talk about the weekend, bro. Congratulations, first of all,
- 1:37Speaker 1: on being selected on the best 150 players in Cubs history,
- 1:42Speaker 1: 150-year anniversary. You had a whole weekend of seeing all
- 1:46Speaker 1: the boys, celebrating Jon Lester, Jody Davis in Chicago. Tell
- 1:52Speaker 1: me about that, bro. You had Sunday night baseball, Reds, Cubs.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It looked like an amazing weekend in Chicago.
- 2:00Speaker 2: It was awesome. I mean, it started with the 150-year
- 2:04Speaker 2: anniversary team, top 150 players. And there's never been that
- 2:08Speaker 2: many Cubs greats all there at one time. And it
- 2:13Speaker 2: was so cool because it was generation to generation to generation.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And I heard Derek Lee talking about how he got
- 2:20Speaker 2: to see his heroes that he watched growing up. And
- 2:23Speaker 2: that was Hawk, right? And Sean Dunstan and Sutcliffe and Maddox.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And then I'm talking about how I got to see
- 2:32Speaker 2: my heroes there. And Derek Lee, right? Sammy Sosa played
- 2:37Speaker 2: against Aramis. So just Billy Williams was there. I mean,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it was really special to be there and be part
- 2:45Speaker 2: of that and that team and Have Lester there for
- 2:48Speaker 2: his Hall of Fame induction on Sunday was really special.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Your boys with Soriano. Alfonso Soriano. I got to hang
- 2:57Speaker 2: out with him. Sori was holding the baby. I remember
- 3:03Speaker 2: to this day, after games, working out with Soriano in
- 3:07Speaker 2: the weight room and seeing his son, little Sori, right
- 3:10Speaker 2: next to him working out. I always said to myself,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I was 22, 23 years old, man, I can't wait
- 3:15Speaker 2: for that day. right? Sorry. We'd be doing lunges and
- 3:18Speaker 2: his little story would be doing lunges right next to him.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And then now fast forward, 15 years later and Alfonso
- 3:24Speaker 2: Soriano was holding my baby. And it was just, it
- 3:26Speaker 2: was a whole aha moment. It was, it was awesome.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's awesome. Like amazing weekend. Our boy Lester got, got
- 3:33Speaker 2: all the love. And then the game that was fun, man.
- 3:37Speaker 2: First time in the booth. So Benetti and cowboy Jeff Brantley,
- 3:40Speaker 2: and then Joey Votto was inside the pitch. and it
- 3:44Speaker 2: was fun man telling the stories just the booth is
- 3:48Speaker 2: the booth is a different beast rossi yeah i like
- 3:52Speaker 2: the booth you uh.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You know i listened i tuned in i thought the
- 3:55Speaker 1: dynamic between you and joey talking hitting and approach and
- 3:58Speaker 1: how different you guys is kind of take on different
- 4:02Speaker 1: at bats and what y'all were looking for and then
- 4:04Speaker 1: cowboy chiming in on like where he liked to pitch
- 4:07Speaker 1: and and how he set guys up i thought you
- 4:09Speaker 1: guys did a really good job and it was fun
- 4:10Speaker 1: to It was definitely a fun dynamic list. Two great
- 4:12Speaker 1: hitters talk hitting and approach, especially the left-on-left stuff. And
- 4:18Speaker 1: Joey's so cerebral and can explain things really well. It
- 4:22Speaker 1: was fun to dive into his brain and your brain
- 4:24Speaker 1: a little bit and how different they were.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It was cool. And you got to see our boy PCA.
- 4:29Speaker 2: What the heck, bro? You got to watch that live. Bro,
- 4:32Speaker 2: five homers in two days. Three homers on Saturday, which
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think was so cool because we're all there. You
- 4:41Speaker 2: know what was really cool? We were all pregame down
- 4:43Speaker 2: in the cage and all the current Cubs players are
- 4:46Speaker 2: hitting and we were just watching them hit and then
- 4:51Speaker 2: PCA goes out and puts on an absolute show, right?
- 4:54Speaker 2: Three home runs. I mean, bro, he's just unstoppable. I
- 4:57Speaker 2: was talking to John Maley a lot who was my
- 5:00Speaker 2: hitting coach and our hitting coach when we were there.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Him and Eric Henske were so instrumental in my life
- 5:07Speaker 2: as far as approach and just seeing Mailey talking to
- 5:12Speaker 2: Mailey about PCA's progress and his evolution, all the maturity
- 5:17Speaker 2: and just him talking and diving in it. Like I
- 5:20Speaker 2: just felt, man, I just, I saw that was what
- 5:25Speaker 2: I used to do. Right. And that's like, it made
- 5:28Speaker 2: me happy to hear PCA's really diving in to John
- 5:32Speaker 2: Mailey more and hear the approach, every approach, every at
- 5:35Speaker 2: bat is, Hey Mailey, what do you got? What do
- 5:37Speaker 2: you got? What do you got? So, It's a lot
- 5:40Speaker 2: of fun to watch, man. He is no doubt on
- 5:43Speaker 2: his way to his first MVP. The Cubbies need him.
- 5:47Speaker 2: They're going to need his best bullets come this stretch.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Well, like you said, we talked about this. It feels
- 5:54Speaker 1: like every episode, but the MVP race feels like it's
- 5:58Speaker 1: just getting more and more in his favor with Otani
- 6:00Speaker 1: not pitching and getting pushed back again and what Pete's doing.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I mean, leading.
- 6:05Speaker 1: All of baseball in OPS with a 9.54. What is
- 6:09Speaker 1: going on? I mean, the numbers are insane. And they've
- 6:13Speaker 1: got a big task ahead of them. Last night, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 1: they got started a four-game series with the Brewers.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You know, nine home runs. How about those fireworks? What?
- 6:22Speaker 2: I mean, they came out. I turned the game on
- 6:24Speaker 2: in the second or third. I'm like, four-nothing. Or whatever
- 6:27Speaker 2: the score was. Oh, my God.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's, it's, we talk about PCA so much,
- 6:33Speaker 1: but Alex Bregman has locked it the fuck in. And
- 6:37Speaker 1: he is, he's the guy that, that we always knew
- 6:40Speaker 1: he would be and started off a little bit slow,
- 6:42Speaker 1: but what a great time for him to get hot
- 6:44Speaker 1: for the Chicago Cubs. Say is swinging the bat really well.
- 6:47Speaker 1: The guys behind Pete are really, you know, stepping up
- 6:50Speaker 1: and you're not able to pitch around him because the
- 6:52Speaker 1: guys behind him are absolutely crushing. So lineups getting deeper
- 6:55Speaker 1: and deeper. I know.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I love their lineup, bro. That line. Oh man. When
- 6:59Speaker 2: I look at the Cubs lineup, it is so nicely constructed.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I feel like every guy compliments each other. And, I mean, bro,
- 7:08Speaker 2: they hit nine home runs yesterday. Nine. That's a franchise record.
- 7:11Speaker 2: They hit 62 to cap off August. 62 home runs
- 7:15Speaker 2: in the month of August. Another franchise record. Most in
- 7:19Speaker 2: MLB history, Rossi, 62 home runs in the month. Bregman
- 7:23Speaker 2: hits three home runs last night. He hit three home
- 7:25Speaker 2: runs August 12th. He had two three-homer games in one month.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Six in two days. That's
- 7:33Speaker 1: like a whole season for me. If I got six,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm jacked.
- 7:38Speaker 2: That's insane. It's insane. So big, big, big win at
- 7:44Speaker 2: Wrigley last night. They lose two or three to the Reds.
- 7:48Speaker 2: They have the Brewers coming in town. Look, they control
- 7:51Speaker 2: their destiny off the Brewers. And I was talking to
- 7:55Speaker 2: counsel when we were interviewing for NBC, and he's like, look,
- 7:58Speaker 2: we're chasing what's on pace to be a 100-win team.
- 8:02Speaker 2: If we don't catch them, it's the best team in baseball, right?
- 8:07Speaker 2: So that's one way, I guess, of looking at it.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Because I had asked, and I want your kind of
- 8:15Speaker 2: opinion on this, Rossi, at what point for the Cubs,
- 8:20Speaker 2: do they really turn to the home field wildcard as
- 8:24Speaker 2: being their prize instead of the division? Because remember, there
- 8:30Speaker 2: was years after we won the World Series where if
- 8:33Speaker 2: we didn't win the division, it wasn't good enough and
- 8:35Speaker 2: it was a letdown, and then you almost take making
- 8:37Speaker 2: the playoffs for granted.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I love that take. I think you always
- 8:43Speaker 1: got to keep your eye on the highest goal, but
- 8:46Speaker 1: you know, as well as I do, the best teams
- 8:48Speaker 1: are just taking it day to day, right. And try
- 8:50Speaker 1: to be the best version of yourself. There's time, you know,
- 8:52Speaker 1: they need to get Dan to be back and healthy.
- 8:54Speaker 1: That'd be a nice addition back. And the guys have,
- 8:57Speaker 1: Nico's done a nice job at short and taking over.
- 9:00Speaker 1: But you got to keep your eye on the day
- 9:04Speaker 1: to day to me, once you start looking at what
- 9:06Speaker 1: you can predict, right? Like if you keep your head
- 9:08Speaker 1: down and doing the pitch to pitch stuff, you just
- 9:10Speaker 1: want to be playing really good baseball and, the teams
- 9:13Speaker 1: that are hot going into October are the ones that
- 9:16Speaker 1: you usually bet on and having a little bit of that.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And their offense is so good, the best in baseball, man.
- 9:23Speaker 1: They're up and down the lineup, like you said, quality
- 9:25Speaker 1: at bats. They've got power. They've got some speed. They
- 9:29Speaker 1: can beat you with contact.
- 9:30Speaker 2: They know how to play the game. They have starting
- 9:31Speaker 2: pitching now too, bro. Yeah, yeah. You know, like Clay, Gaussman,
- 9:36Speaker 2: Shota's got to be a little– just keep the ball
- 9:38Speaker 2: in the park.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:40Speaker 2: They have Assad down there in AAA, which that's pretty
- 9:44Speaker 2: head-scratching because he's such a good swing man. I mean,
- 9:48Speaker 2: their bullpen's a little low. But, I mean, like in 15, Rossi,
- 9:52Speaker 2: when we made the playoffs and we were the wildcard team,
- 9:56Speaker 2: we were so happy. We celebrated like we were winning
- 9:59Speaker 2: every single game. was like we were winning the World Series, right?
- 10:04Speaker 2: And being in that wildcard was good enough for us. 16,
- 10:11Speaker 2: it was the division. Then 18, we go to the wildcard.
- 10:14Speaker 2: We didn't even celebrate because we went to a one-game
- 10:17Speaker 2: playoff and all this stuff, so. That's why I was
- 10:20Speaker 2: just wondering, like, I want to make sure if they
- 10:24Speaker 2: don't catch the Brewers that they're still excited and happy
- 10:28Speaker 2: that they're in the wild card. You know what I mean?
- 10:30Speaker 2: Because sometimes it can be a letdown.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I never understood the teams that didn't celebrate just
- 10:34Speaker 1: getting in and then they were still, you know, some
- 10:36Speaker 1: of these teams. I get it if you're 10 games
- 10:38Speaker 1: up in the division, but celebrate every chance you get,
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think, in baseball because it's hard. It's hard to
- 10:43Speaker 1: make the playoffs. It's hard to get in and each
- 10:45Speaker 1: year is unique. So, I think they'll celebrate that once
- 10:48Speaker 1: they clinch, and I'm sure they've still got the eye
- 10:50Speaker 1: on home field. Home field's a big deal, especially with
- 10:53Speaker 1: the Phillies.
- 10:54Speaker 2: No doubt, bro. The Phillies are hot. And they're playing.
- 10:58Speaker 1: The Cubs are so good at home in that environment
- 11:01Speaker 1: behind you. Those fans really can get to rocking, and
- 11:05Speaker 1: it really does make a difference. And the flip side
- 11:08Speaker 1: of that is one of these teams, especially going to Philly,
- 11:11Speaker 1: that place could be crazy, or San Diego, whoever it is.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Um it could be wild but a little.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Bit of drama let's let's transition you know we lots
- 11:22Speaker 1: of drama not no not going not knowing what was
- 11:24Speaker 1: going on with Cattell Marte and that's kind of been
- 11:27Speaker 1: a saga over the last you know 10 days and
- 11:30Speaker 1: going back and forth with with him and Torrey um
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know he was back yesterday got some boos from
- 11:36Speaker 1: the fans uh one of the one of their premier
- 11:39Speaker 1: players and a guy I think one of the best
- 11:41Speaker 1: second baseman in the league this guy absolutely rakes but
- 11:44Speaker 1: sounds like there's a little bit of drama that we
- 11:46Speaker 1: had some of that on our 16 team that was,
- 11:49Speaker 1: we can, we can kind of relate to.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, this is their star player and it
- 11:56Speaker 2: seems like these reports coming out or just, he didn't
- 11:58Speaker 2: show up to the field. He may have been injured.
- 12:00Speaker 2: It seems like he's done this before in the passing.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I know he did it last year. It's documented, but
- 12:05Speaker 2: even there's some reports coming out that he's been doing
- 12:08Speaker 2: this and man, as a, as a player in that
- 12:12Speaker 2: clubhouse where I see, I'm just, I, I shake my head, right?
- 12:15Speaker 2: Like if, what are we doing? Right. We're all grinding.
- 12:18Speaker 2: We're all here. And, um, our best player is, is
- 12:23Speaker 2: acting like almost a prima Donna in a way, right?
- 12:26Speaker 2: Where it's like, ah, I don't feel like coming to
- 12:27Speaker 2: the field today. What, what do you mean? You know
- 12:30Speaker 2: how many times I didn't want to go to the
- 12:31Speaker 2: field in August? That's not even, you know what I mean? Right.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I'm with you. So I put my, I put my
- 12:41Speaker 2: manager hat on.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I think about Tori Lovello and what he, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: when you have your star player, any player, you, you
- 12:48Speaker 1: gotta have their back.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And as much as it may frustrate you, he's not
- 12:51Speaker 1: going to say that stuff publicly. And, um, your teammates
- 12:54Speaker 1: may be pissed, uh, but you know, as well as
- 12:57Speaker 1: I do, like you can be mad, but his family, right. And,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and when your brother comes back and comes back home
- 13:04Speaker 1: and has gotten in trouble and done some dumb stuff.
- 13:08Speaker 1: You've got to put your arms around them and love
- 13:10Speaker 1: on them and try to get on this. I mean,
- 13:11Speaker 1: they're in the middle of a playoff chase trying to
- 13:14Speaker 1: get into, to October, uh, right there at the wild card,
- 13:17Speaker 1: that last team and fighting it out with, with the
- 13:20Speaker 1: Padres and in their division. And, um, you hate to
- 13:24Speaker 1: see that stuff happen and you hate to see guys
- 13:26Speaker 1: get that mentally down and, and God.
- 13:29Speaker 2: It pisses you off. I'm sure.
- 13:31Speaker 1: But you know, they held serve for a little while and, um,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, from a manager standpoint, you try to have
- 13:37Speaker 1: those tough conversations. I know Torrey really well, and he's
- 13:40Speaker 1: loving on him.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I know Mike Hazen really well as well. I mean,
- 13:42Speaker 2: he has the best reputation in the league, I feel like.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and none of this stuff's going to phase, like,
- 13:46Speaker 1: Mike Hazen. Mike Hazen's dealt with some shit in his day.
- 13:49Speaker 1: You know, his wife, you know, told him a lot
- 13:51Speaker 1: of stuff, passed away.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Like, you know, no.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Nonsense, I'm sure, from them, but also, like, hey, let's
- 13:57Speaker 1: help this young man out and try to get him
- 14:00Speaker 1: back in the right frame of mind to help us
- 14:01Speaker 1: win some baseball games and kind of, work through some
- 14:04Speaker 1: stuff in the offseason as best we can.
- 14:06Speaker 2: But, yeah, it sucks, man. I like what you said about,
- 14:10Speaker 2: which is true, right? You go into a clubhouse and
- 14:13Speaker 2: you're brothers. So if someone does make a bonehead, if
- 14:17Speaker 2: someone pops off to the media or does something stupid
- 14:19Speaker 2: off the field, you come in and you say, dude,
- 14:21Speaker 2: what the fuck are you doing, right? Like, in a
- 14:23Speaker 2: brotherly way, you talk about it, you fight about it,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and then you get over it in literally the same
- 14:29Speaker 2: five to seven minute breath, five to seven minute conversation. Which,
- 14:34Speaker 2: You know, you roll your eyes. You saw some of
- 14:36Speaker 2: their players just be like, yeah, it is what it is.
- 14:39Speaker 2: This is what he does. Right? Rolling their eyes at it.
- 14:43Speaker 2: But then he comes in. He says some things to
- 14:46Speaker 2: the media. I guess maybe lost in translation. Do you
- 14:50Speaker 2: have a message to the fans? He said no. He
- 14:52Speaker 2: didn't have a message to the fans, but that could
- 14:53Speaker 2: have been lost in translation. But then after the game, Rossi,
- 14:57Speaker 2: he's talking to the media, wearing a hat, saying the
- 15:01Speaker 2: bridges I burned today. light the path tomorrow, whatever it said. Yeah.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The bridges I burn light the way.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Right. So, uh, may the bridges I burn light the way.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Come on. Come on, man. Like you're in the casino
- 15:19Speaker 2: while your team's grinding, when all this stuff's going on,
- 15:22Speaker 2: then you're wearing this hat. Like I, what, what are
- 15:26Speaker 2: we doing? Yeah. I don't know. I don't, it's, it's hard.
- 15:30Speaker 2: It's hard. I, I want to always be pro player.
- 15:33Speaker 2: But this one's really hard for me to just, from
- 15:36Speaker 2: the outside looking in, saying, what? It just doesn't make sense. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Hopefully his explanation to his team when he addresses those
- 15:46Speaker 1: has some passion and some sincerity behind it. It's always hard,
- 15:50Speaker 1: especially when you have a translator talking to the media,
- 15:53Speaker 1: to feel the genuine authenticity of the messages. But, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I'm with you. I root for players. you know, as
- 16:02Speaker 1: a manager, you put on those hats and it's just
- 16:04Speaker 1: those tough conversations and trying to get inside somebody's brain
- 16:10Speaker 1: and have them communicate with you, especially when it's just
- 16:12Speaker 1: the dude, right?
- 16:13Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you hear he doesn't want to be in
- 16:15Speaker 2: Arizona anymore. What I do know for sure is when
- 16:19Speaker 2: you have something like this with mixed reports and no
- 16:25Speaker 2: one knows what's going on. The only real people who
- 16:28Speaker 2: know are in that clubhouse. There's so many things throughout
- 16:31Speaker 2: our careers that things that were said to the media
- 16:34Speaker 2: were like, yeah, that's not even close to what's going on.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Well, we dealt with Tommy LaStella. Remember the Tommy LaStella
- 16:41Speaker 1: stuff in Chicago?
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they sent him down. He was our best pinch hitter.
- 16:46Speaker 2: And they sent Tommy down, and the whole team was pissed.
- 16:49Speaker 2: And Tommy said, I'm not going down. I'm going home.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I'm out. If you're going to send me down. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And then we got mad at Tommy, and I loved him. Right, right, right.
- 16:57Speaker 2: But again, it was like Tommy came back, dressed the team,
- 17:00Speaker 2: and then we were all hugging him, loving him, and
- 17:02Speaker 2: so excited he was back. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He was
- 17:05Speaker 2: such a big part of our group. There's just so
- 17:06Speaker 2: much more that goes into it. Rossi, let's get into
- 17:12Speaker 2: our Corona sponsor. Playa. The Playa. Our Playa of the week. Yeah,
- 17:19Speaker 2: let's go. Max Scherzer. Turning back the clock, young man.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 17:24Speaker 2: 42. 42, bro. Jeez. Bro, I'm rooting for the old
- 17:27Speaker 2: guys all the time. He was nasty, man. I mean,
- 17:30Speaker 2: one hit.
- 17:32Speaker 1: 42 years old and 34 days became the oldest pitcher
- 17:35Speaker 1: to have 10 Ks and allow one hit since Nolan
- 17:37Speaker 1: Ryan in 1991. There's only two guys that have done that.
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's pretty good company.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Is that good? That's pretty good company. That's really good.
- 17:44Speaker 2: It's always nice to see the old guys. They're rolling, too,
- 17:46Speaker 2: Blue Jays. Game and a half back. They need him.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Final wallet card. Yeah. His interview after the game, they
- 17:52Speaker 2: were like, oh, were you surprised? He's like, no, I
- 17:54Speaker 2: always knew I could do this. I'm like, Max, you've
- 17:58Speaker 2: been hurt for the last five years, it seems like.
- 18:02Speaker 2: But that's his edge, bro. He is so competitive. He's
- 18:05Speaker 2: so competitive. I love it. Screaming at the manager coming
- 18:08Speaker 2: out in the sixth saying, I'm going back out. There's
- 18:10Speaker 2: some of those guys you're like, I wish I would
- 18:12Speaker 2: have played with that guy.
- 18:13Speaker 1: His intensity is like one of those, like, I would
- 18:15Speaker 1: have loved because, you know, I was an angry player, too,
- 18:18Speaker 1: and needed to go to that level.
- 18:20Speaker 2: So, Um, it's fun to watch him kind.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Of compete and talk to himself and reminds me a
- 18:25Speaker 1: little bit of Jake PD when he's, when he's motherfucking
- 18:27Speaker 1: himself on, on the, on the mound, just trying to
- 18:31Speaker 1: psych himself up to get nasty.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So great outing. Welcome back.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Max, uh, passes Gaylord Perry for ninth all time and strikeouts.
- 18:39Speaker 1: That's absolutely insane. Over 3,500 strikeouts.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Is that?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 2: He's a punch of my ticket a time or two.
- 18:46Speaker 2: That's for sure. That is for sure. It's great. 42, 42. That's,
- 18:51Speaker 2: that's impressive. I'm 30. I just turned 37 or I'll see.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And I, so I was in the, um, we were
- 18:58Speaker 2: down in the cages at Wrigley and someone goes, I
- 19:01Speaker 2: think you'd have to traject right now. The machine that's
- 19:04Speaker 2: that all these guys hit off of before the game.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'm like, no, I can't. It hurts watching these guys play.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And Max doing it at 42. How old were you?
- 19:13Speaker 2: You were, what, 39 when you retired? 39, yep. Hatcher.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if you know this.
- 19:18Speaker 1: He's like the oldest guy ever to go deep in
- 19:20Speaker 1: game seven. But it's not about me. But I was
- 19:22Speaker 1: just at 39 years old.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Wow. You know what? I did know that. I did
- 19:27Speaker 2: know that. All right. Enough about me. Let's get into
- 19:31Speaker 2: the Orioles. Orioles go out and they claim Luis Robert Jr.
- 19:35Speaker 2: from the Mets. The Orioles are right there in it.
- 19:38Speaker 2: They're one game back of the final wild card. They
- 19:41Speaker 2: trade Adley Rutschman. the deadline to the Red Sox. And
- 19:44Speaker 2: then they go on this run. I feel like all
- 19:49Speaker 2: the pressure there's a lot of expectations on the Orioles,
- 19:52Speaker 2: and then they sell at the deadline, and I feel
- 19:54Speaker 2: like it was an exhale. All right, let's just go
- 19:57Speaker 2: play instead of trying to live up to these expectations.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And they've been rolling. They're 7-3 in their last 10.
- 20:03Speaker 2: This team could be a little scary if they get in.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Well, the fact that they're willing to continue to push
- 20:12Speaker 1: and pick up a guy like Luis Roberts Jr. and
- 20:15Speaker 1: still try to get the potential out of him. I mean,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you know, he was one of the best players in
- 20:20Speaker 1: baseball when he's with the White Sox.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And I don't know. 38 home runs in 23, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I mean, this dude, this dude is was I mean,
- 20:29Speaker 1: we saw him. I remember managing against him like he
- 20:31Speaker 1: could float in the outfield. Power hit run tool was
- 20:35Speaker 1: was off the charts. Trying to get him back to
- 20:39Speaker 1: the version that he was would be a big, huge
- 20:41Speaker 1: pickup for the Orioles. The fact that they're still trying
- 20:46Speaker 1: is pretty impressive. One game back of the wildcard spot,
- 20:49Speaker 1: 7-3 in their last 10.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Feels like their manager, Greg.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Albinath, is just hitting his stride and getting the feel
- 20:58Speaker 1: for his team. I always think it takes a little
- 21:00Speaker 1: bit longer, first-year managers, to get that pulse of the
- 21:03Speaker 1: team and put your stamp on it. It feels like
- 21:06Speaker 1: They've hit that kind of stride here after the trade deadline.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo smoking cigars in the dugout, which I love, right?
- 21:14Speaker 2: It's a long season. Go in, enjoy, right? Probably firework night.
- 21:19Speaker 2: But he had 1,000 OPS in August, nine home runs
- 21:22Speaker 2: in August. That's a big month out of him. He's
- 21:25Speaker 2: doing what he does every year. He's putting up his...
- 21:28Speaker 2: The back of his baseball card will look like the
- 21:30Speaker 2: same as it has the last seven, eight years. So...
- 21:34Speaker 2: I mean, he's the guy they, that's who they went
- 21:35Speaker 2: out and got, right. They went out and got that.
- 21:38Speaker 1: That's what they expected when they went out and got
- 21:39Speaker 1: them in the leadership talking to, I've done two Orioles games,
- 21:43Speaker 1: talking to their manager, their coaches, like he, he's been
- 21:46Speaker 1: a real leader for them and exactly what they've needed in,
- 21:49Speaker 1: in this, this group that, um, you know, the Orioles
- 21:52Speaker 1: have always kind of been an underdog story and they've
- 21:55Speaker 1: got a real middle of the order bat with a
- 21:57Speaker 1: lot of young guys. And Gunnar Henderson is one of
- 21:59Speaker 1: my favorite guys I've ever been around with the WBC. And, um,
- 22:02Speaker 1: they've got real talent there and, I mean, Colt, let's
- 22:05Speaker 1: get a highlight real quick.
- 22:08Speaker 2: What a perfect transition into your world-famous Blue Chew ad, Rossi. Yeah,
- 22:14Speaker 2: we got a sponsored Blue Chew segment.
- 22:18Speaker 1: This is Gold Glove Player of the Week segment.
- 22:20Speaker 2: It's brought to you by Blue.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Chew, the number one brand for better sex. If you
- 22:24Speaker 1: want to perform like a champ, go to bluechew.com. This
- 22:28Speaker 1: play will give me a little blood flow like Blue Chew, baby.
- 22:31Speaker 2: McCarthy. McCarthy. Oh, what a play.
- 22:41Speaker 1: There's walk-off homers, and then there's walk-off plays like this.
- 22:44Speaker 2: What a catch. McCarthy, sorry, bro.
- 22:49Speaker 1: What a big moment just got taken away from you.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Colton Cowles are going up. I mean, what's going on
- 22:56Speaker 1: with the outfielders right now? Because the play from Nemo
- 23:00Speaker 1: last week, robbing the homer. was amazing. Colton Cowles are
- 23:03Speaker 1: here saving the game. We had a bunch on the weekend.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Bellinger. Bellinger's throw. Oh my gosh.
- 23:10Speaker 1: I came up out of my 1-0, kept the lead
- 23:14Speaker 1: for the Yankees. I came up out of my chair
- 23:17Speaker 1: when I was watching that live. And Bellinger's one of
- 23:20Speaker 1: my favorite players that I've ever managed. And he, like
- 23:23Speaker 1: the throw there, right on the money. You love to
- 23:25Speaker 1: see real fundamentally sound baseball. And belly with that throw
- 23:31Speaker 1: to save the lead for the Yankees, and they go
- 23:32Speaker 1: and win one-nothing behind Cam Schlittler.
- 23:34Speaker 2: You know what I used to say to guys all
- 23:36Speaker 2: the time at first base when they'd get on? I'd
- 23:39Speaker 2: be like, bro, can we just collude as a league
- 23:42Speaker 2: and just stop with these diving, insane plays through the
- 23:46Speaker 2: first seven innings of the game? No diving. No diving
- 23:50Speaker 2: plays on the infield. No diving in the outfield. Let
- 23:52Speaker 2: our guys get our hits. Pitchers won't like it, but
- 23:55Speaker 2: hitting's hard enough. And then come to seventh, like the NBA,
- 23:58Speaker 2: come like midway through the fourth, they start really playing defense.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Like the NBA. You know? That's what I used to
- 24:03Speaker 2: say all the time. All the offensive players loved it. Pitchers. Yeah,
- 24:07Speaker 2: they were fired up. Man, these guys, bro, they're so good.
- 24:11Speaker 2: And the information and the analytics of where to position
- 24:14Speaker 2: outfielders and infielders, it's just– it really– I love the
- 24:19Speaker 2: athleticism that this shift of the infield– like guys have
- 24:25Speaker 2: to be athletic again. And we're seeing plays on a
- 24:28Speaker 2: nightly basis and showcasing how athletic these guys are. Yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Get rid of the shift and the pitch clock have
- 24:35Speaker 1: been a game changer in baseball. It's just, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: to watch, like you said, the athleticism, I remember doing
- 24:41Speaker 1: some little league world series that just ended for ESPN,
- 24:43Speaker 1: but doing some back in the day. And when you
- 24:45Speaker 1: see these kids just show off their, their defensive skills,
- 24:50Speaker 1: it's so much fun. And when you see it, this
- 24:51Speaker 1: big league level, that's why the Cubs are so fun
- 24:53Speaker 1: to watch their offense. But, Watching them, you know, Pete
- 24:56Speaker 1: and Center, their defense is insane. Talking about good defense,
- 25:00Speaker 1: Sadon Raffaella makes an amazing catch for the Red Sox
- 25:04Speaker 1: in that last game.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Would have kept it tied, but, like... No. It was
- 25:12Speaker 2: a no catch. Yeah, I know. Yeah, yeah, I know
- 25:16Speaker 2: what they called it. That was a catch, bro. That
- 25:19Speaker 2: was a catch. I know. I mean, look, I mean.
- 25:24Speaker 2: That's tough, man. He knows his reactions. The fact that
- 25:29Speaker 2: there's not enough evidence to overturn it. Watch this right here.
- 25:33Speaker 2: That's in the glove.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I think the hard part are probably what made them
- 25:38Speaker 1: leave the same.
- 25:39Speaker 2: That's a catch for sure. My man Lou Maloney.
- 25:42Speaker 1: In Boston to call now. And I'm with him in
- 25:47Speaker 1: real time.
- 25:48Speaker 2: That's a catch. And I know.
- 25:49Speaker 1: The play stood. You see when it's super slow where
- 25:53Speaker 1: the ball might have snow-coned to the ground.
- 25:57Speaker 2: I think that's why they were inconclusive. What if that
- 26:01Speaker 2: happened in October? That's always my question. What if that
- 26:06Speaker 2: was a game deciding October? If you ask anyone as
- 26:11Speaker 2: a catch, I'm sure if you even ask the Yankees guys,
- 26:13Speaker 2: they're like, how did we get away with that one?
- 26:17Speaker 1: If you get away with a couple during the season,
- 26:18Speaker 1: you're feeling good about it, but The one thing I
- 26:20Speaker 1: would say is, like, you know, that broke the tie
- 26:23Speaker 1: break in the favor.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Of the Yankees. Bro, that was a massive series. That
- 26:28Speaker 2: was a massive series. Yeah, and that catch.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I know they blew them out after that, but who
- 26:35Speaker 1: knows how things would play out.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That series, though, going into it, the Red Sox were
- 26:41Speaker 2: really hot, and I feel like for the Red Sox,
- 26:43Speaker 2: that was kind of like their gauge meter, right? A
- 26:49Speaker 2: lot was leading up to that series. But for the
- 26:52Speaker 2: Yankees as well, if the Red Sox come in there
- 26:56Speaker 2: and beat the Yankees, they, I feel like, just completely
- 26:58Speaker 2: deflate that team.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Sure.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Where the Yankees held serve. They won three out of four,
- 27:04Speaker 2: which was huge. I saw a lot of Red Sox
- 27:09Speaker 2: fans or people chirping about the Yankees, how they lined
- 27:12Speaker 2: up their pitching, and the Red Sox maybe didn't line
- 27:14Speaker 2: up their pitching as well. But that's just the way
- 27:16Speaker 2: the season goes, right? So, um, that last game, a
- 27:21Speaker 2: lot of more drama in the league. I do. That's
- 27:23Speaker 2: why I love August. Cause all the drama comes out.
- 27:25Speaker 2: All the guys were pissed off, angry August. And it
- 27:27Speaker 2: was on full display the last week of August. Um,
- 27:32Speaker 2: jazz Chisholm steals second and third and a six run
- 27:36Speaker 2: ball game in the eighth where I know I played
- 27:40Speaker 2: for Booney. Six runs is not officially too many or
- 27:45Speaker 2: too many runs to conceive. Um, In the eighth inning,
- 27:49Speaker 2: they're down. I could see why the announcers were mad.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I mean, they went overboard for sure, Rossi. But what
- 27:57Speaker 2: do you got on Jazz stealing those bases?
- 27:59Speaker 1: Man, I was a big proponent of when I managed, like,
- 28:03Speaker 1: take any free base they'll give you. Like, I would
- 28:06Speaker 1: have no problem. You're trying to take care of your
- 28:08Speaker 1: own stuff. And if you're not holding me on, it's
- 28:12Speaker 1: free game to go. Like, you've already said, I'm conceding
- 28:14Speaker 1: this base.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't care. So, like, I don't know what everybody's
- 28:17Speaker 2: so upset about. Well, yeah, but you can't– if they
- 28:20Speaker 2: were up 10, you can't do that. Six is like,
- 28:22Speaker 2: all right.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Well, you just want to stay out of the double–
- 28:25Speaker 1: even if you just stay out of the double play, like,
- 28:27Speaker 1: who cares? If I get to score– even if you're
- 28:30Speaker 1: up 10, if I get to score four or two
- 28:33Speaker 1: and two and you've got to get up an extra
- 28:34Speaker 1: bullpen guy, even getting him loose– Like, I don't get, like,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I'm not here to help your feelings. You know, this isn't,
- 28:41Speaker 1: you know, the unwritten rules are.
- 28:44Speaker 2: That wasn't an unwritten rule, in my opinion. I agree.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Being up six, because if they go out and hit
- 28:48Speaker 2: a two-run, three-run homer, and then Booney has to get
- 28:51Speaker 2: Bednar up, and their bullpen was already short four games
- 28:55Speaker 2: in three days, you know. And then what was really
- 29:01Speaker 2: the icing on the top is when Jazz gets a third,
- 29:03Speaker 2: the Red Sox pull their infield in. Yeah, I didn't
- 29:06Speaker 2: get that. Don't tell me you're conceding the game and
- 29:08Speaker 2: then you're going to pull your infield in with a
- 29:10Speaker 2: runner on third, less than two outs.
- 29:12Speaker 1: And how many times have we talked about, like, just
- 29:15Speaker 1: giving a pitcher another run on their ERA just pisses
- 29:19Speaker 1: him off a little bit more and sends him with
- 29:21Speaker 1: a negative vibe or that one pitcher with a negative
- 29:25Speaker 1: vibe and now he's pissed off and, like, that shit
- 29:27Speaker 1: can carry over and, you know, now you go in
- 29:31Speaker 1: and one of the guys is pissed that he gave
- 29:33Speaker 1: up a run when– he really did his job and
- 29:37Speaker 1: shouldn't have, just because the manager chose not to do something. Yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 1: so anytime you send negative vibes to the other dugouts,
- 29:43Speaker 1: send them, baby.
- 29:44Speaker 2: That's what I do. I remember when I'd be playing
- 29:48Speaker 2: first base and we'd be in an out-of-hand ball game
- 29:51Speaker 2: or we're up, say the closer's in and we're up
- 29:54Speaker 2: three and there's two outs and there's a runner on
- 29:57Speaker 2: second or a runner on first, two outs. I still
- 30:00Speaker 2: wouldn't play off the bag because I told Booney, I
- 30:04Speaker 2: told Joe, I told you, I did not want that
- 30:08Speaker 2: run to score. And if he just steals an innocent base,
- 30:12Speaker 2: gets to second, and then a guy has a blue pit,
- 30:14Speaker 2: then your pitcher is pissed off. To where if I'm
- 30:17Speaker 2: holding him on, I play the odds. There'd be times
- 30:19Speaker 2: where I would go back and play behind him. But
- 30:21Speaker 2: I'm playing the odds. Is this guy really going to
- 30:23Speaker 2: hit me the ball at this moment in this game
- 30:25Speaker 2: with who's on the mound? So, I mean... The announcers,
- 30:32Speaker 2: the WEI guy who was saying hit Austin Wells.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 2: You know, Jazz Chisholm doesn't play that. If it wasn't
- 30:41Speaker 2: Jazz who did it, I don't think you'd get the
- 30:44Speaker 2: same reaction from the Red Sox radio, right?
- 30:48Speaker 1: I think he rubs people the wrong way a little
- 30:52Speaker 1: bit that aren't down with his way of playing.
- 30:54Speaker 2: You can't say it's Marcus Stroman. No, no. Well, here's
- 30:57Speaker 2: the thing. You can't say Austin Wells, you should fight
- 31:00Speaker 2: Jazz Chisholm. Like, what are we doing?
- 31:02Speaker 1: I know you're emotional. He did come out and apologize, but. But, well,
- 31:06Speaker 1: here's my problem with the apology. This is just me. Like,
- 31:09Speaker 1: you said what you said. Like, it was an emotional reaction. But, like,
- 31:13Speaker 1: as soon as any blowback comes from social media and, again,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you get to take your emotions out and have a
- 31:20Speaker 1: day to sleep on it. But, like, you said what
- 31:22Speaker 1: you said. Like, the apology to me is, like, that's
- 31:25Speaker 1: just somebody up top going, hey, you need to apologize.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Like, just own what you said. Angry August. Angry August.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Everyone's in it. I mean, the.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Announcers are traveling these teams. You know, they're traveling these teams.
- 31:37Speaker 2: They're on the grind, too, bro. Yeah, they're on the grind, man.
- 31:40Speaker 2: They love their players.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And, you know, I just, you know, we got to
- 31:44Speaker 1: apologize anytime you hurt people's feelings here lately. And I'm
- 31:47Speaker 1: just like, Just own it and move on, you know,
- 31:50Speaker 1: unless your job's a jeopardy.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Go get fired. Well, it's good. It's in a setup
- 31:54Speaker 2: for a nice, hopefully, three-game series in the Bronx. That
- 31:58Speaker 2: would be sick. Red Sox Yankees in the Bronx. They
- 32:00Speaker 2: had it last year. So, I mean, look, I remember
- 32:04Speaker 2: the great Tim Buss, who we do our Tim Buss
- 32:07Speaker 2: Ball Bag Questions of the Week, which you can send
- 32:09Speaker 2: in to rossandrizzo at gmail.com. But he said, you don't.
- 32:16Speaker 2: really find out who you are and who real teammates
- 32:19Speaker 2: are or coaches until about midway through August. That's when
- 32:23Speaker 2: the real season starts. That's what he always says. Because
- 32:26Speaker 2: everyone is pissed off. You've been around the guys for
- 32:29Speaker 2: 150 days, if you're including spring training. And now these
- 32:33Speaker 2: last six weeks of the season, you really find out
- 32:36Speaker 2: who the real ones are and who the people are
- 32:39Speaker 2: just cashing it in are. So it's, you see a
- 32:41Speaker 2: lot of drama around the league and I love it.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I love it. It's good for entertainment. It's good for
- 32:45Speaker 2: the program.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Let's get into the rankings now that we're in September.
- 32:50Speaker 1: September 1, we're starting to get to the, we got
- 32:54Speaker 1: this last month, and who are your teams, bro? Give
- 32:57Speaker 1: me your American League top couple teams. Give me your
- 33:00Speaker 1: National League few teams, ranking them. Because there's a lot
- 33:04Speaker 1: of teams that, I mean, Dodgers don't look real good,
- 33:07Speaker 1: and I know everybody on paper wants to keep going
- 33:10Speaker 1: back to them, but The offense has struggled a little bit.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Who you got in each division? Who's your horses? For
- 33:18Speaker 2: the AL, it's got to be the Rays. They just
- 33:21Speaker 2: haven't been talked about enough because they're a smaller market,
- 33:24Speaker 2: but they just keep doing it, man. They have good pitching.
- 33:27Speaker 2: They have guys you've never heard of that are just
- 33:29Speaker 2: throwing 100 out of their bullpen. The only thing with
- 33:33Speaker 2: the Rays is that they don't play these big primetime games,
- 33:36Speaker 2: so that could hurt them maybe in October because they're
- 33:39Speaker 2: not used to all that noise. because they just go
- 33:42Speaker 2: under the radar. And then you got Yankees, Red Sox.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Raise Yankees, Red Sox in the top. And then these
- 33:52Speaker 2: bottom three, four teams that are all fighting for this
- 33:54Speaker 2: last wild card spot, the Central. I like the White Sox, man.
- 33:58Speaker 2: They seem like they have a little bit of magic.
- 34:00Speaker 2: If they can get a home playoff series, I think
- 34:03Speaker 2: they can maybe make it to the DS and even
- 34:06Speaker 2: go beyond that. Who knows once they get in. But
- 34:08Speaker 2: sleeper team for me, I think. Shout out Will Venable.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Shout out Will Venable, our guy. Sleeper team is the
- 34:13Speaker 2: Orioles right now. They're playing with just house money. They
- 34:15Speaker 2: seem to be playing really free. So we'll see how
- 34:19Speaker 2: that plays off. And then the NL, look, the Dodgers
- 34:22Speaker 2: are number one. People can say what they want, but
- 34:27Speaker 2: the Dodgers are coming off two World Series championships. Virtually, like,
- 34:31Speaker 2: no hangover either. Okay, they're struggling for a few weeks.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Who cares, right? I know they care, but this is
- 34:40Speaker 2: what the Dodgers– They're built for October. You got Glasnow back.
- 34:46Speaker 2: You have Snell back. Otani's going to be back. Otani's
- 34:50Speaker 2: slumping right now. Otani's been pretty bad offensively, which his
- 34:54Speaker 2: bad is better than everyone else. It's only a matter
- 34:58Speaker 2: of time before he goes off. Mookie's a big game player.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Then you have Kiki, who's going to just turn into
- 35:05Speaker 2: Babe Ruth in the playoffs. If you're a Dodgers fan...
- 35:12Speaker 2: Don't worry. They'll be just fine. It's hard to win
- 35:16Speaker 2: the World Series, but they will be ready come October.
- 35:18Speaker 2: So they're number one for me. Then it's Brewers Braves.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I mean, the Braves are legit, bro. That performance by
- 35:23Speaker 2: Chris Sale, bro, going complete game shutout versus the Dodgers
- 35:29Speaker 2: was sick. Hitting 100. I love him.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Speaking of turning back the clock, talking about an old
- 35:36Speaker 1: guy's performance, that performance is right up there with Scherzer's,
- 35:39Speaker 1: if not better, and against the team.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I'm with you. I think we differ.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Paying attention to the Dodgers and those guys, I don't know.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I shouldn't say this, but they just look old right now.
- 35:51Speaker 2: The Dodgers have the fourth easiest schedule, though. They have
- 35:53Speaker 2: the fourth easiest schedule. So that's perfect for them. All
- 35:57Speaker 2: they need to do is just... They don't need to
- 36:00Speaker 2: do anything, honestly. They've done it. They literally walk the walk.
- 36:05Speaker 2: They've done it.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Well, and the Phillies and Cubs, who I would put
- 36:09Speaker 1: above the Dodgers right now, just in this moment, have
- 36:12Speaker 1: got the second, third hardest schedule to finish out the season. Obviously,
- 36:18Speaker 1: the Brewers, I'm like more Brewers, Braves, Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers, bro.
- 36:22Speaker 2: I'm like... They're scuffling. You know what I mean? It's... Dude,
- 36:28Speaker 2: the National League playoffs is going to be must-watch television.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Every pitch. It's going to be... The National League is
- 36:37Speaker 2: going to literally come down to inches every single play. Yeah.
- 36:41Speaker 2: It's going to be really good. And the Yankees need
- 36:42Speaker 2: to get judged back.
- 36:44Speaker 1: The Yankees, I feel like, if he can come back
- 36:46Speaker 1: and be in rhythm and timing and, you know, be
- 36:49Speaker 1: a version of the guy, you know, that's a long
- 36:51Speaker 1: time off to come back and be dialed in offensively.
- 36:54Speaker 1: But if he gets enough plate appearances that he feels
- 36:56Speaker 1: good and comes from the box, man, the Yankees are
- 36:59Speaker 1: going to roll this offseason.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Yeah, their pitching is deep, man. They're– This is September baseball, bro. Remember,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember this, Rossi, but every
- 37:08Speaker 2: September 1st, I would be playing the song, Wake me
- 37:12Speaker 2: up when September ends.

- 39:11Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of fun, I want to mention... Tully, for
- 39:15Speaker 1: the Red Sox, hugging. Did you see the swinging butt.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Of the guy who was hitting? Dominic Canzione. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And he goes over, and he's waiting on him, and
- 39:26Speaker 1: they just hug. That brought back the memory of YouTube.
- 39:30Speaker 1: down Freddie Freeman in Atlanta in a rundown.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Going, Frederick, Frederick. Dude, totally. You were the king at it.
- 39:38Speaker 2: We already talked about the hand sanitizer the other day.
- 39:41Speaker 1: But, my gosh, like, the guys that can have fun
- 39:45Speaker 1: and compete their tail off, but also just– make these
- 39:50Speaker 1: moments within the game exciting. I always thought Adrian Beltran
- 39:54Speaker 1: and these guys, Beltran, did a good job of making
- 39:59Speaker 1: the game.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Beltran. Adrian Beltran, Carlos Beltran. Carlos Beltran, there we go. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 2: He's old, sorry, guys. He's old. He was a teammate
- 40:06Speaker 2: of mine. I should get it right. But, yeah, when
- 40:09Speaker 2: those guys.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Would go out there and have fun and just make
- 40:14Speaker 1: these moments, it just makes me laugh when I.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Watch the game. It's so cool. The Red Sox, too,
- 40:20Speaker 2: coming off a tough three out of four losses to
- 40:24Speaker 2: the Yankees. They walk off yesterday versus the Mariners. Trevor
- 40:27Speaker 2: Story getting Roman Anthony back and Trevor Story back. That's
- 40:31Speaker 2: big for this team. You know what I mean? Let
- 40:33Speaker 2: them get their feet wet.
- 40:35Speaker 1: And they got some hits in the Yankee series, and
- 40:37Speaker 1: they came back ready to go. That lineup has gotten
- 40:41Speaker 1: even deeper.
- 40:41Speaker 2: If Crochet can come back and pitch out of the bullpen,
- 40:45Speaker 2: I mean, dude, this is going to be Get your popcorn, Rossi.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Let's go. We're almost in playoff baseball.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I feel like we should be. We're knocking on the door.
- 40:55Speaker 1: We've still got a whole month left. It's going to
- 40:57Speaker 1: have a lot of drama. We're going to start doing
- 40:59Speaker 1: more shows.
- 41:00Speaker 2: We'll get to talk about it even more. It'll be good.
- 41:01Speaker 2: I can't wait. It'll be really good. Let's get into
- 41:04Speaker 2: our Tim Buss ball bag questions of the week. Bussie. Again,
- 41:10Speaker 2: you can ask questions via YouTube comments or email us
- 41:14Speaker 2: at rossandrizzo at gmail.com. We really do. This is probably
- 41:17Speaker 2: my favorite segment. I love answering the fan questions. We
- 41:20Speaker 2: got an email from Chris Blair.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Yeah, let me get this one.
- 41:25Speaker 2: This is for you.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Chris Blair, Rizzo, how did you and Aroldis Chapman squash
- 41:30Speaker 1: your beef when you joined the Cubs in 2016? What
- 41:33Speaker 1: I'm referring to is when you charged the whole Reds dugout,
- 41:36Speaker 1: by the way, in an iconic moment. And you talked
- 41:39Speaker 1: about this a little bit on air on Sunday night
- 41:41Speaker 1: with Votto and some of the back and forth. Tell
- 41:44Speaker 1: us that story and what you found out about Aroldis
- 41:46Speaker 1: after the fact.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I did charge them. We were playing,
- 41:50Speaker 2: I believe we were playing four games in five days.
- 41:52Speaker 2: We had a make-up game, and it was a four-game series.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And I was, I don't know what I was thinking.
- 42:01Speaker 2: It was the dog days of July. It was right
- 42:02Speaker 2: before the All-Star break, and Aroldis throws over Nate Schrold's head.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Go at him. We have this beef. I find out literally...
- 42:10Speaker 2: that day after the game, Hey man, you know, he's
- 42:13Speaker 2: a boxer, right? Like he boxed in Cuba. I was like,
- 42:16Speaker 2: Oh fuck. He's going to kill me. He's a giant.
- 42:20Speaker 2: He's literally like next time I face him, he's going
- 42:21Speaker 2: to drill me. He throws a hundred. It's already the
- 42:24Speaker 2: most terrifying at bat ever facing him. Um, so it's,
- 42:30Speaker 2: it's actually a funny story. We were at the all-star
- 42:33Speaker 2: game in Minnesota, literally a week later, both on the
- 42:36Speaker 2: national league. So we squash it right away. Right. um
- 42:40Speaker 2: at the all-star game we come up hey poppy like
- 42:44Speaker 2: how you doing we dap up he to the moment
- 42:47Speaker 2: he has a translator we're talking he's all right cool
- 42:49Speaker 2: like awkward you know still don't like him because he
- 42:53Speaker 2: strikes us out every time and every single time we
- 42:56Speaker 2: go to cincinnati they always get the free pizza the
- 42:59Speaker 2: uh you know what i'm talking about in cincinnati roses
- 43:02Speaker 2: the roses if they strike out 11 they would get
- 43:06Speaker 2: free pizza. And from 2012 to 2021, but really 2012
- 43:12Speaker 2: to 2014-15, every single time the Cubbies would roll through Cincinnati,
- 43:18Speaker 2: at least two out of the three games, they were
- 43:20Speaker 2: getting free pizza, right? Chappie would come in. If there'd
- 43:24Speaker 2: be nine punch outs in the game, he'd punch out
- 43:27Speaker 2: the side. If there was 10, like it was clockwork.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you're tired of everybody cheering every time somebody punches out.
- 43:35Speaker 1: It gets louder and louder because they know they're getting
- 43:37Speaker 1: a free pizza. It's like in the minor leagues when
- 43:40Speaker 1: they had the beer batter of the game. The beer
- 43:42Speaker 1: batter of the game if you strike out. Yeah, I
- 43:45Speaker 1: strike out like 25 sip beers or something. You're getting
- 43:48Speaker 1: heckled in the on-deck circle. I was in High Desert
- 43:52Speaker 1: one time and I got picked for the beer batter competition.
- 43:54Speaker 1: punch out guy i'm as a hole hitter so like
- 43:56Speaker 1: it was a good chance and as soon as i
- 43:57Speaker 1: stepped foot on on the odd egg circle they're start
- 44:00Speaker 1: they're like ross i'm about empty i'm about empty let's
- 44:03Speaker 1: go bro imagine imagine if the big leagues.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Did that oh my gosh that would be like for
- 44:09Speaker 2: say like the sixth inning if this batter strikes out
- 44:13Speaker 2: everyone gets four dollar beers instead of 24 beers back
- 44:17Speaker 2: back in your minor league days they were 25 cents
- 44:19Speaker 2: now yeah this guy's Yeah, they couldn't do that now. But, bro,
- 44:22Speaker 2: so then we get to the All-Star game, and we're
- 44:24Speaker 2: in the shower, and it's just me and Chapman in
- 44:26Speaker 2: the showers. And Chapman's just standing there with his arms crossed,
- 44:31Speaker 2: staring at me, right? And I feel him. I'm like, oh,
- 44:35Speaker 2: my God. He's going to kill me. Like, he's going
- 44:37Speaker 2: to kill me naked. Like, this is where I die.
- 44:41Speaker 2: So I'm, like, washing myself. I'm facing the wall, and
- 44:44Speaker 2: I just feel him staring at me. And I turn back.
- 44:49Speaker 2: And just give him like a, what's up, Poppy? How
- 44:50Speaker 2: you doing? And he just gives me this little smile
- 44:52Speaker 2: and chuckle. I'm like, he's going to kill me. And
- 44:55Speaker 2: then when he gets traded over, I mean, it's water
- 44:59Speaker 2: under the bridge two years later. But, I mean, Chappie
- 45:02Speaker 2: was one of my favorite teammates. He did anything for
- 45:05Speaker 2: the boys. He hung out all the time. I love
- 45:08Speaker 2: seeing him everywhere we go. And now after the fact,
- 45:10Speaker 2: and the fact that he's still doing it is just,
- 45:13Speaker 2: he's first ballot all-famer in my opinion.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Well, there's always those guys on the other team that
- 45:18Speaker 1: you hate. You're like, oh, my God, I hate this
- 45:20Speaker 1: freaking guy.
- 45:21Speaker 2: And then he's on your team, and you're like, oh,
- 45:23Speaker 2: my God, I love this guy. Well, that's why I
- 45:26Speaker 2: try not to judge anyone that I think from afar
- 45:30Speaker 2: that rubs you the wrong way because there's been too
- 45:32Speaker 2: many guys you play with where then they become your
- 45:35Speaker 2: best friends. All right, next one. Good job, Chris. Corey Whitaker.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Going back to the 2021 season, how much did the
- 45:47Speaker 2: trade of you, Darvish, and Caratini affect the psyche of
- 45:49Speaker 2: the team going into the season? I've heard you guys
- 45:52Speaker 2: say how much a big trade acquisition can boost the team,
- 45:55Speaker 2: but does trading away important players have the opposite effect? Absolutely.
- 46:00Speaker 2: You were the manager of that 2021 team.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember when Jed called me and told me
- 46:05Speaker 1: we were trading Darvish. After 2020, I think there was
- 46:09Speaker 1: just some payroll stuff that they were trying to to
- 46:12Speaker 1: clean up from there. And I wasn't real privy to
- 46:15Speaker 1: all that, but I think the, you know, you get
- 46:18Speaker 1: it sometimes it sucks. I mean, that was him and Kyle.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I'm just going to say Carl every time, but the professor,
- 46:26Speaker 1: you know, where our two best pitchers in 20 and
- 46:29Speaker 1: the ones that made starts for us in the post
- 46:31Speaker 1: season that year and helped us win the division and.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Like crazy season, big season, crazy, crazy.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Yeah. But, you know, we still got out there and
- 46:40Speaker 1: grinded and we had those guys taking the bump. And
- 46:42Speaker 1: when you lose your horse, you know, it's, it, it's
- 46:45Speaker 1: never a good sign and, um, them kind of trading
- 46:48Speaker 1: him over. And then the Caratini part of that is,
- 46:51Speaker 1: was a big one too, because he was such a
- 46:53Speaker 1: good dude and look at the career he's had, uh,
- 46:55Speaker 1: being kind of that, that hybrid, uh, not really a
- 46:58Speaker 1: starter all the time, but not really a true backup.
- 47:00Speaker 1: This guy, this guy's a real bat and a great teammate.
- 47:04Speaker 1: And so, You lose some of those guys that are
- 47:06Speaker 1: the boys and you go to battle with, and they're
- 47:09Speaker 1: good players, it definitely can take effect. And starting pitching
- 47:14Speaker 1: is everything. Starting pitching, those guys that you can rely on,
- 47:18Speaker 1: the horses, they're hard to come by.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I love Darvish. Darvish, I love getting to know him.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I've been to his house for dinners. We've gone out
- 47:26Speaker 2: to dinners. We hung out a lot in the car.
- 47:29Speaker 2: the hotel after games. So that was tough for me.
- 47:32Speaker 2: And then Caratini too, man. Caratini was just an ultimate professional.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Always loved it. Always happy. Always asking questions. Always picking
- 47:41Speaker 2: my brain and just other guys' brains. Ross, you remember
- 47:45Speaker 2: when Alec Mills threw the no-hitter? Yeah. In Milwaukee. In Milwaukee.
- 47:52Speaker 2: And Alec Mills was on league minimum. Caratini was catching.
- 47:56Speaker 2: And Caratini catches a no-hitter. So I'm messing with Caratini saying,
- 47:59Speaker 2: Hey man, you're going to get a fossil watch. Cause
- 48:01Speaker 2: when you throw a no hitter, usually the pitcher gets
- 48:04Speaker 2: you a, um, a nice watch, get you a nice watch,
- 48:08Speaker 2: a Rolex or something. Right. So I bought Caratini, a
- 48:13Speaker 2: fossil watch. And then, and what also you do is
- 48:17Speaker 2: you get an engraved. So instead of getting it engraved,
- 48:20Speaker 2: I got like a label maker and just put the,
- 48:25Speaker 2: I put the thing and I, and I, and I,
- 48:28Speaker 2: Mess with them saying, hey, this is from Alec from Millsy.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And I saw Caratini recently. We were doing a game
- 48:36Speaker 2: on Sunday Night Baseball. And I go, hey, bro, you
- 48:38Speaker 2: still have your fossil? He was dying laughing. He's like, yep,
- 48:41Speaker 2: still have it. That's sick. I got a nice one
- 48:44Speaker 2: from Marietta. When you trade these guys away, you're in
- 48:47Speaker 2: the trenches with them. It's always hard because they become friends. Yeah, yeah. Thanks, Corey.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Good question. Good question. Luke. One more. Yep. McCalick, I believe.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Email from Luke. Rossi, it was said Shota may have
- 49:04Speaker 2: been tipping his pitches over the season. What do batters
- 49:07Speaker 2: look for to gain the advantage? And also, I'll add
- 49:10Speaker 2: to that, what do you do as a manager if
- 49:13Speaker 2: your pitchers are tipping?
- 49:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the first thing when you find out
- 49:19Speaker 1: that's a possibility, your pitching coach is doing a deep dive.
- 49:23Speaker 1: And usually you have a guy on staff that is
- 49:26Speaker 1: good with that or with all the technology we have,
- 49:30Speaker 1: the information can come down of what may be a
- 49:33Speaker 1: little bit different. So when you find that stuff out,
- 49:37Speaker 1: you try to You watch the game in situations where,
- 49:41Speaker 1: how is this guy sitting on a breaking ball in
- 49:43Speaker 1: this cow after this sequence? And, you know, maybe hitting
- 49:47Speaker 1: a breaking ball, especially veteran guys. And every team is
- 49:50Speaker 1: trying to gain an edge. If you're not trying to
- 49:52Speaker 1: gain an edge, like, you know, that's just, you know,
- 49:56Speaker 1: you're not going to be around really very long. Because
- 49:59Speaker 1: any little edge.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Especially against a pitcher. That's all I did. As a hitter,
- 50:02Speaker 2: all I did. And with Shota, I know Shota throws
- 50:05Speaker 2: a split. So I'm looking just to take fans away.
- 50:08Speaker 2: a little insight of what I would look. First off,
- 50:10Speaker 2: before the game, we're going to have maybes. If we
- 50:13Speaker 2: don't have a full tip on him, maybe he does this.
- 50:16Speaker 2: So there's already a few cues that you're looking at.
- 50:18Speaker 2: So right when the game starts, I'm looking at glove positioning.
- 50:21Speaker 2: I'm looking at his forearm. I'm looking at the way
- 50:24Speaker 2: he grips the ball. I'm already looking at all these
- 50:26Speaker 2: potential cues. So with Shota, I know he throws the
- 50:31Speaker 2: nasty split. Does he grip his split right away? Because
- 50:34Speaker 2: a lot of guys who throw nasty splits have to
- 50:37Speaker 2: pre-grip it Because they can't get to it in the
- 50:40Speaker 2: glove or they have to dig too much. So I'm
- 50:42Speaker 2: looking at that. If he does do that right away,
- 50:45Speaker 2: then I'm looking at, okay, does he wear sleeves? If
- 50:47Speaker 2: he grips it right away, I'm looking right at the forearm.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I'm looking like right here. Because then a lot of
- 50:52Speaker 2: guys will move the ball in the glove. But if
- 50:55Speaker 2: they don't move their, if this forearm muscle doesn't move,
- 50:57Speaker 2: that means he's not really moving the ball. So there's that,
- 51:01Speaker 2: that little cue can tell you if he's going to
- 51:05Speaker 2: throw a split or not. And guys do it all
- 51:07Speaker 2: the time. So, I mean, I remember that's all I did.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Me and Judge were in the dugout. Golf height, guys
- 51:15Speaker 2: breathing too much. There's so many things. Squeezed versus flared, right?
- 51:19Speaker 1: Like a lot of guys change up, we'll flare it.
- 51:22Speaker 1: The other part that I think is new on the
- 51:26Speaker 1: back end of my career, and once they started implementing
- 51:30Speaker 1: the pitch comms, Guys at second base are trying to
- 51:33Speaker 1: get in the glove if you're able to see anything.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Totally.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Just a little bit wider where the height is, how
- 51:40Speaker 1: you can see. You get a back camera angle where
- 51:43Speaker 1: you'll see.
- 51:43Speaker 2: The grip, maybe like this or like that.
- 51:45Speaker 1: I mean, guys are trying every angle they possibly can
- 51:49Speaker 1: to get just a slight advantage. Hitting is extremely hard,
- 51:52Speaker 1: and if you can pick up something on the opposing pitcher.
- 51:54Speaker 2: You're the plus. There was one year Kevin Galsman was
- 51:56Speaker 2: moving his pinky every time he was throwing a fastball,
- 51:59Speaker 2: and you saw it in his glove because he was
- 52:01Speaker 2: so over it. So you saw his pinky get off
- 52:06Speaker 2: his split. And those are my only hits off Kevin
- 52:09Speaker 2: Gosman in my career. The year I had a– you
- 52:11Speaker 2: know what I mean? Oh, it's a fastball.
- 52:14Speaker 1: And there's nothing more frustrating as a manager in a
- 52:16Speaker 1: team that like knowing that you gave something away. And
- 52:20Speaker 1: so when we talk about like just worrying about your
- 52:24Speaker 1: own team and yourself and your group, that's the stuff
- 52:26Speaker 1: we're talking about. It's like just have all your stuff
- 52:29Speaker 1: buttoned up. and all the details, and giving away no advantage,
- 52:34Speaker 1: and then go play that way. When you feel like
- 52:35Speaker 1: you're giving something away, and you didn't lose just on
- 52:39Speaker 1: your talent, and that day's play, you lost on not having, or.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Giving away something to the other team. It drives you crazy. Rossi,
- 52:46Speaker 2: what did I do if.
- 52:47Speaker 1: A catcher set up inside early? You were having everybody
- 52:52Speaker 1: scream out of the dugout. You were like, hey, Larry! Yeah,
- 52:57Speaker 1: if a catcher set up early, yep. Do you set
- 53:00Speaker 1: up early inside on me? You're basically telling me what
- 53:04Speaker 1: pitch is coming in the count. And if I know
- 53:06Speaker 1: the pitchers sitting inside and I hear the come on
- 53:08Speaker 1: Riz from the dugout, I can just start doing the
- 53:10Speaker 1: math in my head what he's going to throw me.
- 53:12Speaker 2: In that count. So those are little things where you
- 53:16Speaker 2: have to be buttoned up and clean it up throughout
- 53:20Speaker 2: the game.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Some good stuff today.
- 53:22Speaker 2: I love the Tim Buss ball bag questions of the week.
- 53:27Speaker 2: This is my favorite part of our show is, answering
- 53:29Speaker 2: the question.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Mine is my blue chew ad read mine's my blue
- 53:32Speaker 1: chew ad read.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Uh next next week rossi and i will be coming
- 53:37Speaker 2: to you not live but we will be coming to
- 53:41Speaker 2: you from ireland going on a little golf trip together
- 53:44Speaker 2: can't wait for that rossi we gotta we gotta we
- 53:48Speaker 2: gotta put some money up on We need to. We
- 53:50Speaker 2: need to get the fans. We need a nice wager.
- 53:52Speaker 2: We need to chime in of, like, what the bet
- 53:54Speaker 2: should be. Yeah, what should our bet be? What's going
- 53:57Speaker 2: to make you uncomfortable, Rossi? Your pocketbook would definitely make
- 54:03Speaker 2: me uncomfortable, bro. That's for sure.
- 54:05Speaker 1: And we're about even golfers, too, so we're not giving
- 54:08Speaker 1: strokes to anybody.
- 54:09Speaker 2: We're about the same. He kicks my butt sometimes. We'll
- 54:12Speaker 2: have to keep our scorecards, and we'll sign them, and
- 54:15Speaker 2: we'll take pictures, and we'll divvy it up at the
- 54:18Speaker 2: end to show everyone. That'll be good. Well, good show, man. Yep.
- 54:21Speaker 2: That was a good one. Thanks, everyone. God, that flew by.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Thanks for the questions.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Yep.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Next week, we'll be coming to you from Ireland. And
- 54:28Speaker 2: then the week after that, we're going to start probably
- 54:33Speaker 2: twice a week with our coverage going into the playoffs,
- 54:36Speaker 2: the September stretch. And then once October hits, it's on, Rossi.
- 54:41Speaker 1: I can't wait for October. Thanks, everybody, for tuning in.
- 54:44Speaker 2: We love you guys. And keep those questions coming.
