- 0:26The racers round table is your seat at the table for candid conversations and
- 0:29timeless memories from those who lived it.
- 0:32Strap in tight because it's time to talk.
- 0:34Racing history one lap at a time.
- 0:42We always put the best up here first, and then this is the rest.
- 0:46Okay,
- 0:49is this on?
- 0:50Can people hear me?
- 0:51Is this on?
- 0:52I hope not, but I think it is.
- 0:55I can't hear myself talking now.
- 0:58I've stuck enough needles in him.
- 1:00I, I want Ron Lauer to work on him here a little bit.
- 1:04My best friend in racing with your, I know I sat side with your background.
- 1:08I didn't realize until I read your resume.
- 1:11Yeah, I think your daughter put it out.
- 1:13I don't know.
- 1:15I, I knew you were, you know, a RDC racer and in one races, and I knew
- 1:18you were A RDC champion won race.
- 1:24Stink.
- 1:25That's when you were old and done.
- 1:29Got a point there.
- 1:31Anyhow, I want you to work on him a little bit.
- 1:34I'm gonna step back from the, the microphone here a little bit.
- 1:38I knew what this was all about.
- 1:39See, Lynn knows that in a three hour segment like this, Jimmy's gotta
- 1:44take at least six or seven deep breaths and I'm here to fill the gap.
- 1:48But that's about it, right?
- 1:50Well, actually I didn't know Jimmy when he was taking people out at her rides.
- 1:55I was, I was just a kid.
- 1:57And, uh, but when he had his, uh, accident and came back in the TQS and
- 2:02N-A-R-D-C, I got to know Jimmy, and he really does have a great story.
- 2:07When you go through the whole thing, you just don't have to hear it as many times.
- 2:11That's all know
- 2:14now, really the things you accomplished, I, I know you didn't
- 2:17race as long with both arms as you did with one, and you won more races
- 2:21with one arm than you did with two.
- 2:23Yeah.
- 2:2352 rashes total.
- 2:2521 with two arms and three, one with one on them.
- 2:28Now how many guys have done that?
- 2:30Come on.
- 2:31A he?
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:33There you go.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:34But he had a hand, he just lost his hand.
- 2:37He just, he just lost his hand.
- 2:39I lost the hand.
- 2:40See that's right here.
- 2:41LER won 52 races two years in a row with one leg.
- 2:44One leg.
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:45And I ran, you are seeing, finished his fourth and points and won three race.
- 2:49And I had my whole leg in a cast on the right side.
- 2:52When I drove for Harry D and the way I worked the gas pedal, they gave me a test.
- 2:56I took a hammer and I smashed the ball of the cast so I could work the work.
- 2:59The gas pedal, they took two laps.
- 3:01I just kept the, the gas pedal to the floor.
- 3:03The first two blows went to the head though, I'll tell you that.
- 3:06Two, two laps around the racetrack, but my foot to the foot and
- 3:09say, okay, can run all way.
- 3:11Some along in 62.
- 3:12I goes, my crutches.
- 3:13Get in the car and run the car.
- 3:14Won a couple of races, did good.
- 3:16Finish both points so you can run a car with one leg.
- 3:19He should breathe soon.
- 3:20I'm ready.
- 3:23Okay, we're up here.
- 3:24Lynn's not up here, so I don't know what in the world we're gonna talk about.
- 3:27You wanna talk about it then, or.
- 3:29About who?
- 3:30Lynn.
- 3:31Oh.
- 3:31Oh, Mr. McCabe has a question for him.
- 3:34What was it like racing with Hank Rogers, Jr. Oh, Hank was the buddy man.
- 3:37He sold mine.
- 3:38He sold, listen, his father, listen, let me tell you about Hank.
- 3:40I wanted him down here so I could refute it.
- 3:43We raced against each other.
- 3:44A great guy.
- 3:45He ran for Kalen for two years, didn't win the race, right?
- 3:48So I appeared on the scene.
- 3:50We were at the Check five pain club and he said, Hey, my, my
- 3:53car owner's getting another car.
- 3:54Would you like to drive?
- 3:55Oh, I'd love to drive.
- 3:56I didn't have a ride for a couple years.
- 3:58So he got me a ride with Kaylin.
- 4:00So I got in and of course I set my own cars up.
- 4:02Kaylin doesn't set 'em up, right?
- 4:04And that's why they never won.
- 4:06So any, and I'm telling you, this is what happened.
- 4:08Anyway, I set the car up and after a couple of races, I won a race.
- 4:12So after I won a race, he set Hank's car up that way, and
- 4:15Hank started to win races.
- 4:17So all season long was back and forth.
- 4:19I'd went and go ahead and point.
- 4:20So finally I had a little alation one night at the race and some guy, uh.
- 4:26Call me a bad name.
- 4:27So I punch him in the mouth that, that, uh, suspended me for two races.
- 4:31So then I was still up there and fighting for the championship, two races
- 4:35to go the end of the season, Hank's about maybe 50 points ahead of me.
- 4:39So we're going to two asphalt tracks.
- 4:41Thompson, I forget what the, but I was good in asphalt.
- 4:44Hank wasn't.
- 4:45So what does his father do?
- 4:46He fires me right at the racetrack.
- 4:48I couldn't even get, I was with his father going to the racetrack and I had hitch
- 4:52a ride from somebody else to go home and we were three oh oh miles away from home.
- 4:56So anyway, Hank runs, I don't know, whatever it was, he wins the championship.
- 5:00So of course the night of the championship, and I congratulate him, but
- 5:03I kid with 'em all the time because I took my average, what I got for every race I
- 5:07ran, an average every race that Hank got.
- 5:10And if I had to ran the whole season, I would've won the
- 5:12championship with the average.
- 5:14If, you know, that doesn't always happen.
- 5:16So anyways, father fired me and you know, I still stayed friends.
- 5:19That's the way it was.
- 5:20You know, guy had this swing about him once in a while and they fire guys.
- 5:24We go to the banquet, congratulate Hank and congratulate everybody.
- 5:27He finished first the championship.
- 5:29I finished second, but I always tell Hank, Hank, you know, I
- 5:33know you're the champion, but we were gonna make a decision.
- 5:35We've put this before a judge, and I said, I made so many average
- 5:40points per race and I even had so many average points per race.
- 5:44If I ran the whole circuit, I'd beat you.
- 5:45Right.
- 5:46I said before court of law, I'd win the race, I'd win the championship.
- 5:49So I was, so this is a ongoing thing with Hank and I, but he's officially
- 5:54the A RDC champ for that year, and I finished second, but we always get
- 5:58together and we river on that, you know?
- 5:59So anyway, that's what we is, and it gets him fired up.
- 6:02That's why I wanted him here today.
- 6:03Get him fired up and he couldn't make it.
- 6:05Great friend.
- 6:06Great guy.
- 6:07When you bump Wednesday out of that ride, that was over 60 years ago.
- 6:11Do you realize that?
- 6:11I know that, I know.
- 6:12It was 1962 and it's 19 2 23.
- 6:17So it's 60 years in 1 61 years.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:21And I'm still here, so I must have done something.
- 6:23Right before that, we had a racer, Richmond, Virginia.
- 6:26I blew the engine to Harry D's car.
- 6:28So there was another guy that wrecked his car.
- 6:30So I said, Hey, can we change engines?
- 6:32Okay, we up at Williams Grove.
- 6:34It was a seven hour ride to Richmond.
- 6:36We rode up, cut to Williams Grove at seven o'clock next Sunday morning.
- 6:39We changed it.
- 6:41Took the engine out of a bunch of guys, helped me.
- 6:43We had a two by four in the field.
- 6:44We had spectators watching.
- 6:46Two by four.
- 6:46We lifted the engine out, took the engine out of Brownie sky, went to put it in.
- 6:51I had an eight tooth spine on the transmission heat at 10th.
- 6:56By this time it was one o'clock in the afternoon.
- 6:58There I ran the heat.
- 6:59Bill hints ran like that was right.
- 7:01He ran the heat, whatever he finished.
- 7:02So anyway, we get up the next day, one o'clock we couldn't do.
- 7:06I'm sitting there like this.
- 7:07The car owner from cys or whatever cys car that he was driving.
- 7:11The car owner came over personally and said to me, what are you gonna do now?
- 7:14I said, well, I don't have a ride.
- 7:15I'm out of, he said, well, I want you to run the car on the feature.
- 7:18I said, what happened to Cy?
- 7:19He said, I don't want in my race car.
- 7:23So he said, I want a guy that stands on the gas pedal.
- 7:25I know this.
- 7:26Kyle, go Now what this car was, this was a USAC car, a good car.
- 7:30So I said, I said to him, yeah, I'm a race car driver.
- 7:33So on the way over there, once he grabs me, he said, where you going?
- 7:35That's my race car.
- 7:36I said, no, that guy owns the race car.
- 7:38You're just a driver and he wants somebody that puts the foot to the floor.
- 7:42So all I know is that's my reputation.
- 7:44So I get in the race car, I start last in the race because first time
- 7:48I'm driving the car and he qualified through the consolation race.
- 7:52So I start back.
- 7:53So I stepped on the gas bar.
- 7:54Wow.
- 7:55The going down the straightaway passed three cars.
- 7:57I said, wow.
- 7:58Kept my foot to the floor.
- 7:59Passed before, you know, in four, five laps.
- 8:02I was in second spot.
- 8:03So I said, wow.
- 8:04He said, good car.
- 8:05So all of a sudden they had a red flag.
- 8:07Big stop, crashed someplace.
- 8:09They restart the race cookie os out is on the pole.
- 8:12Now in those days you didn't start side by side, you start single file.
- 8:16So Cook, we go in the corner.
- 8:18I'm right behind Cookie Os out.
- 8:20He spins right in front of me.
- 8:22Well, when you spin, he lets the car roll up the racetrack.
- 8:25I'm trying to go around the outside of my left front wheel,
- 8:28hits his left rear wheel.
- 8:29I do a series of Andover and flips, which made the front lane
- 8:33paper of the illustrated news.
- 8:35I end over and over and I land upside down.
- 8:38Fortunately, I was okay because I held myself in the car, in the robot,
- 8:41saved my life so I get outta the car.
- 8:44So once he comes over afterwards and says to me, see that you wrecked the car.
- 8:47That was my ride.
- 8:49The car owner said, look boy, you're gonna run the car next week for me.
- 8:52You fixed the car that was open and twisted.
- 8:54You fixed the car all up.
- 8:55The next week I ran the car at Abbot, stop the car.
- 8:58In those days, the beat was the number 27, the Venetia car.
- 9:03That was the car on the East Coast to beat.
- 9:05Here I am, I got through the Tri Baytown here.
- 9:07All of a sudden you see this guy in front of me.
- 9:09Wow.
- 9:10I got close to him and I didn't win the race.
- 9:11They finished second, so the car was happy.
- 9:14So that ended my ride, that car because, uh, the season was ended for URC.
- 9:19The last race for URC was in Shelby, not Carolina work.
- 9:23And I was auditioning for him.
- 9:25He said, do you wanna ride my car there?
- 9:26You don't?
- 9:26Yeah, I'll ride a car.
- 9:28Anyway, I go down there.
- 9:28I was four.
- 9:29I won the feature, sat in back, I won the feature.
- 9:31That was my first feature with URC in 1962.
- 9:35And I had the ride for the following year.
- 9:37So when the following year started, now all, all went along.
- 9:40I was a single guy, so I ate at his house every night.
- 9:43I managed kids.
- 9:43We had a good time.
- 9:44I became part of John LAN's family.
- 9:46So the season started about a week before USAC was gonna run Langhorn.
- 9:52He said to me, Jim, I'm not gonna put you in the car.
- 9:54You're too close to the family.
- 9:55Langhorn is a killer racetrack in them days.
- 9:58And he said, A lot of you young guys go wacky down there.
- 10:00I was mad as heck.
- 10:01I got so mad at him.
- 10:02He put Bobby Marvin in.
- 10:04He put Bobby in the car, same age as I was.
- 10:06He was a crazy guy, but he was from Ohio.
- 10:08Well, he gets in the car and kills himself.
- 10:10He hit one of the chuck holes that I probably would've hit.
- 10:12Goes in over in car catches, fires in them days where he had no fuel cells.
- 10:17The car catches fire.
- 10:18And of course you can't see the fire burning.
- 10:20And you know what they had for a fire crew back in those days?
- 10:23A truck with a one, one bottle on it to put the fire on.
- 10:26Well, by the time he got to the car, 15 minutes later, it
- 10:29was all burnt up and alcohol.
- 10:30He couldn't see the fire.
- 10:31Of course, he burned the dead.
- 10:33The cow was surround.
- 10:34So I went over and apologized that, John, thanks for not giving me a ride up.
- 10:38This was a Sunday afternoon, right?
- 10:41I get home nine o'clock, Sunday night, I get a call from Venetia.
- 10:45Here I am 21-year-old kid.
- 10:46He says to me, Jim McGuire, right?
- 10:48I said, yeah.
- 10:49So I says, this is sad, Venetia.
- 10:52I said, are you the guy that owns that 27, the one that Hank Rogers senior drives?
- 10:56He said, yeah.
- 10:57He said, well, we weren't very satisfied with laying on today.
- 10:59He should have went faster.
- 11:00So we want a young guy like your charger.
- 11:03You were the one that gave us the most hot time passing.
- 11:06That's right.
- 11:06You got Hank Senior fired out of that car so you could get in it, right?
- 11:11Is that true?
- 11:12No.
- 11:12He said to me, Uhhuh, he said to me, Hank's not Hank's getting
- 11:16old now, he should have been.
- 11:17Go do it.
- 11:17He was 50 years old.
- 11:19He was an old man.
- 11:20So, uh, his son still holds it against you.
- 11:26He says, we want you to drive the car for us.
- 11:27You're a hot charger.
- 11:28Okay, so the first time I rode the car was, are we gonna yank asphalt?
- 11:32Which I'm good on asphalt.
- 11:33That's what I was brought up in.
- 11:34So Bobby caught Wright al qui fighting with each other and
- 11:39they won first and second.
- 11:40I finished third, but but easy was happy.
- 11:42Finished third on asphalt.
- 11:44Hank Rogers senior never did good on asphalt.
- 11:46None of the old time dirt drivers.
- 11:48Never did good on asphalt, but I did good.
- 11:50So I was happy.
- 11:51So he says, you've got the ride.
- 11:52So the next race we go to Georgetown.
- 11:54I win that race and I won.
- 11:56Did pretty good as the season.
- 11:58Went on an asphalt track again in Quebec, Canada.
- 12:01I was leading the race, running good, I'm laughing.
- 12:03Dave Humphreys, the rear axle breaks, he goes out in front of me, hit the
- 12:07tire, flip end over, and I land on the wall up, upside down and the
- 12:10wall, the back of the race goes shit.
- 12:12Right.
- 12:13Seems to be a pattern here, doesn't it?
- 12:14One behind the robot.
- 12:16Well that's what happens there guys.
- 12:17It, I only knew one way to drive before, got the floor.
- 12:21And car owners do a lot of money like and you like extra car owner.
- 12:24I only knew one way to drive car owners, like guys that put the floor to the floor.
- 12:27They didn't care if they have to spend the money as long as they want.
- 12:29That's the way it was really.
- 12:31So that's why a young age.
- 12:32I got quick.
- 12:33So anyway, uh, I landed upside down the wall.
- 12:36She had the race car off the back.
- 12:38Said there like half conscious.
- 12:39I said to sab, how's the race car?
- 12:41Don't worry about the race car.
- 12:42You gotta get better.
- 12:43So we go to the hospital.
- 12:44I spend a week in the hospital.
- 12:45I get outta the hospital, I fly down on Friday to Georgetown, Delaware.
- 12:49The car's waiting for me.
- 12:50They get all ready for me.
- 12:51I win the race down there in the Georgetown.
- 12:53I was back.
- 12:53The newspaper says my body, what were you in the hospital for?
- 12:56Mental illness or what was it?
- 12:58They thought I broke my neck.
- 12:59They thought I broke 'cause my neck was hurting and they hooked me x-rays.
- 13:02You'd have been in trouble if you broke your jaw because you wouldn't
- 13:05have been able to talk anyway.
- 13:09Hey, once talked a long time.
- 13:10He said a lot of nice things.
- 13:11All right, come on.
- 13:13He still talked longer than I did.
- 13:15They were better stories.
- 13:16He was an extra at attraction.
- 13:17That's he put first.
- 13:18You know what's great about we?
- 13:20I was listening to a loser.
- 13:21That's why I was listening.
- 13:23So that was it.
- 13:24I was a winner.
- 13:25That was the difference.
- 13:27And the car owners liked winners.
- 13:28That's why I got a best ride.
- 13:29The best guy Wednesday.
- 13:30You never got your car upside down, right.
- 13:33Never did.
- 13:33Right.
- 13:34It is everybody else's car.
- 13:35Right.
- 13:36How far?
- 13:37Never did.
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:38But, uh, I've been held the car, couple them over, not as many as Wonder Boy.
- 13:43Over here.
- 13:43I went over, okay, thank you.
- 13:44I went over 15 times in my career.
- 13:46His percentages.
- 13:47There's 14 pictures over there, right in that Jimmy McGuire, case 14.
- 13:52Which one did we miss?
- 13:54I didn't put any of my Ricks in there.
- 13:55I'm glad you didn't put any of my Ricks in there.
- 13:57I brought that to Well, I got, I got one of Vene Carl tour to hell.
- 14:00Who did that?
- 14:02Uh, yeah.
- 14:04Where's that?
- 14:04The guy that just went, uh, that's Dick.
- 14:07Yeah.
- 14:08But he told me, he said to me, don't worry about it.
- 14:10We'll fix up.
- 14:10We'll get to the next race.
- 14:11The next race at one part.
- 14:12We'll see.
- 14:13When you drove for Ezio, I was a young kid.
- 14:15I thought you had to win every race when you drove for him.
- 14:17'cause the driver, Hank Senior did a job.
- 14:19He won 12 races one year for him.
- 14:21And here's another thing I did.
- 14:23Whenever we were young drivers and you got a car, car owners, you
- 14:26got in, you know, some guy would say, well, can you change this?
- 14:28You can change that.
- 14:29If I told Mari this a long time ago.
- 14:31I said when you we're young guys, when you get in a race guy, never
- 14:34complain that something's wrong.
- 14:36Wait till you do good, then complain.
- 14:38So I get into an easiest guy.
- 14:39I said, man, everything's perfect.
- 14:40I love this guy.
- 14:41After I won my first race, I said, you know, this should be this way.
- 14:45So then after you win and do good for him, then they changed for you.
- 14:48You know?
- 14:48And that's the way it was in them days.
- 14:50Because the cos, well, one way Carl said one thing in their mind.
- 14:53Right?
- 14:54It my way.
- 14:55When I went to Kinesio, I said, everything's perfect.
- 14:57Everything.
- 14:57Even when I finished third, everything was perfect.
- 14:59Everything was perfect.
- 15:00They were happy with me when I won Georgetown and I changed things, but I had
- 15:04to win first before they'd listen to me.
- 15:06If you didn't win, they put another charge in the car.
- 15:08Right?
- 15:09And I'm telling the truth, right, bill?
- 15:11That's it.
- 15:11You gotta put the guy.
- 15:12Hey.
- 15:12That's the first thing they've agreed on for a long time.
- 15:16Okay?
- 15:17They both remembered the situation.
- 15:20One a little different than the other, but that's okay.
- 15:23Well, anyway, but I forgot about it.
- 15:25Hank, how you stealing that ride from him?
- 15:27I came, wait a minute.
- 15:28When I came back, after my being in the hospital, I was down a few points.
- 15:31Now I was a point leader before that happened.
- 15:34They had a couple of races.
- 15:35SAB gets to me sign.
- 15:36He says, you know Jim, you don't have to win every race.
- 15:38I said, I thought I had to win every race.
- 15:40That's why I try and I crash if I can win.
- 15:42He says, Jim, 'cause I'd crash, I'd win a race.
- 15:45I crashed.
- 15:45I win.
- 15:45I crashed.
- 15:46He said, Jim, just finish second or third if you have to.
- 15:49I said, oh, okay.
- 15:50So then I started, I started racing.
- 15:52If I finished second, and if it was hard to race, I'd finish third, fourth.
- 15:55I had 52 races in my career.
- 15:57Right.
- 15:57There's probably about another 25 that this year won when I never won 'em.
- 16:00Like on a weekend, on a rough dirt track.
- 16:02I'd be leading the race and all of a sudden a guy would come to challenge me.
- 16:05I'd back off a little bit because my arm, my left arm was so numb.
- 16:09I didn't have full control of the wheel.
- 16:10So I just let the guy go by me and I didn't want to have to fight him.
- 16:13So some other times they finished second and third.
- 16:15I had the lead at that time, but I was good.
- 16:18If we had 10 laps to go in the race, I was strong for 10 laps.
- 16:21If we had like a 25 straight race to run my amud weekend, I
- 16:25have to back off a little bit.
- 16:26That's an honest truth.
- 16:27So, and we get to the end of the season, right?
- 16:29Where at Shelby, North Carolina.
- 16:31So he says to me, Jim, you got the point lead.
- 16:33All you're gotta do is finish in the top 10 and you win the championship.
- 16:36And he said that guy's, even if he wins, you finish the top
- 16:3910, you win the championship.
- 16:40So I got down to North Carolina, I worked my way through travel.
- 16:43I'm up in second spot and Earl Hor is in front of me, the
- 16:46champion that year before.
- 16:48So I said, set up a gun.
- 16:50I can beat Earl.
- 16:51I remember what Cas Sam said.
- 16:52Finished in the top 10 and you got the championship.
- 16:55I backed off.
- 16:56Earl helped me.
- 16:56He was an older guy.
- 16:57He helped me a lot.
- 16:58Him and Bobby.
- 16:59Kwright really helped me a lot in my younger career.
- 17:01He helped me too.
- 17:02He seriously, he helped me.
- 17:05Bobby Kwright gave me the name Magoo.
- 17:07It was the first time I ran against him.
- 17:08He couldn't, I'd give you a different name than that, but
- 17:11I couldn't repeat it up here.
- 17:13And the way I got the name Magoo was my first year at Binghamton, New York.
- 17:16That was my first year running Spencer in 61.
- 17:19When you run asphalt to New England, when you get the move
- 17:21over, fight, you move down on dirt, you move up to leave the guy.
- 17:25I didn't know that.
- 17:25So when they gave me the move over fight for Bobby Cutright leading the race.
- 17:29I pulled down, which I cut him off.
- 17:31He didn't crash, but Earl went around the outside, he won the race ball.
- 17:35We finished second and that didn't mean too much then.
- 17:38But when the season ended in 1962, they tied from the championship.
- 17:42If he had a pass mate, he would've won the championship by five points.
- 17:45So they were the first coach champs in the only coach Champs in URC.
- 17:49And that was because I cut Bobby, cut right off.
- 17:51So after the race, he comes walking over to me.
- 17:53Now he's an old man.
- 17:54He's 35 years old, right?
- 17:55I'm a young kid, 20 years old.
- 17:58We should be 35 again.
- 18:00He says, he sees me coming down and he says, what's your name, kid?
- 18:04I said McGuire.
- 18:05Jim McGuire, he is my first sprint.
- 18:08He says to me, McGuire, we're gonna call you Magoo.
- 18:10You don't know where the hell you are going.
- 18:12So ironically, that name is stuck with me all the time.
- 18:15And of course it helped me be Bump.
- 18:17I bumped in a few guys along my way.
- 18:19So every time they say, McGuire named you Magoo.
- 18:21So that, that name stuck with me.
- 18:23Ey, you sure you didn't give that name?
- 18:24Magoo?
- 18:25I'll tell you one thing, ever since that happened, I never
- 18:28walked away from my ride at a boy.
- 18:31I stayed right there all the time.
- 18:33Vince soon was a great driver.
- 18:34Don't, don't get me wrong, he was a great one.
- 18:36So wait a minute, what?
- 18:38I kissed his daughter in Victory Lane.
- 18:39When I beat Foot, I did.
- 18:41I kissed Bill's daughter in Victory Lane.
- 18:43When I beat Foy.
- 18:44That was the girl on the trophy.
- 18:45Okay, go ahead.
- 18:48Wait a minute.
- 18:48I didn't do that.
- 18:49Hey, no.
- 18:50Who got paid that night?
- 18:51Foy.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:54Wanted the trophy.
- 18:55And I said, no, that's my trophy.
- 18:56Yeah, the trophy.
- 18:57And I pulled it away from the hand on it top, the big trophy, except for one piece.
- 19:01Foy has that he took.
- 19:03I said, I'm so serious.
- 19:04I said to Foy, you got the money, I'm gonna keep the trophy.
- 19:07Yep.
- 19:07I worked out in Indy for five years after that, and every year I
- 19:10went on to say, where's my trophy?
- 19:11Where's my trophy?
- 19:13Ray.
- 19:13Ray McCabe was gonna bring this up because as I'm sitting here next to you, tell him
- 19:18about the time you went to Pocono on the three quarter mile and didn't have any
- 19:21of their stuff with you, and you borrowed everything and what happened after you?
- 19:25Oh yeah, that was, well, that was Boston.
- 19:27I went up there with Hank and I, him a ride.
- 19:30You're a good friend, Dan.
- 19:31We're best friends.
- 19:32We're still out, I think.
- 19:34Uh, although, you know what?
- 19:35He got me fired from my car.
- 19:37That's why he won the championship.
- 19:38I wanted him here to tell him that he was afraid I was gonna beat Hank.
- 19:42And his, his wife had owned the car.
- 19:45That's the way it worked.
- 19:45And he didn't want his wife winning the championship.
- 19:48Kalen told me I was a bunch of bullshit.
- 19:52Hank probably did too.
- 19:53Yeah.
- 19:55Anyway.
- 19:56Tell when you went to Pocono.
- 19:58So I went to the Poconos.
- 19:59I had no ride.
- 20:00So all of sudden, and a three quarter mile track inside Pocot.
- 20:03And what happened is, uh.
- 20:05Blackie came down.
- 20:06He was supposed to be a driver, but the forecast from New England
- 20:08was, it was gonna rain in Poconos.
- 20:10So the driver never came to the racetrack.
- 20:12So they said, Hey, Blackie's got the car.
- 20:14And I knew Blackie very personally from back home in Boston.
- 20:17So he said to me, uh, do you wanna run the car?
- 20:19I said, okay.
- 20:20I don't have any equipment.
- 20:20So I borrowed a uniform from somebody.
- 20:23I borrowed a helmet from oil and I borrowed everything from extra drivers.
- 20:26I get in the car and I go out in the heat to qualify and man,
- 20:30Blackie had an illegal engine.
- 20:31They let him run.
- 20:32It was a sco, really built big illegal engine that's a fresh, it
- 20:36was an oversized Nova sized engine, but they let him go because the
- 20:40guy guys had in it weren't drivers.
- 20:42So they never competed hard against anybody.
- 20:44So I stepped in the gas filet.
- 20:46I passed three off.
- 20:47He, I, whoa.
- 20:48Anyway, I got up the second or third spot.
- 20:50And I said, wow, this car's flying, and all of a sudden I passed the
- 20:54two Scon brothers on the outside and I says, this thing's flying.
- 20:59Then all of a sudden I go in the corner, I lose it.
- 21:02I hit the wall, I flip in over and I lost mother one.
- 21:04Yeah.
- 21:05That was my time.
- 21:06I hit the wall.
- 21:07I over.
- 21:07Yeah, but how about when you were in practice and you didn't have your
- 21:10racing arm with you and your other one kind of left the steering wheel.
- 21:15Do you remember that?
- 21:16Oh yeah.
- 21:17Oh yeah.
- 21:20Yeah.
- 21:20I didn't have my steering arm with my, had my regular artificial
- 21:22arm and Yeah, that's right too.
- 21:24That's probably why I spun out.
- 21:25You're right, right.
- 21:27By the way, we have his bag here.
- 21:29His one arm is hanging right there on the case, and the other one's in the bag.
- 21:34Well, the other one was a high, when you run heavy, that
- 21:37one I could run asphalt with.
- 21:38The other one, I had to run dirt because dirt was rough.
- 21:41And when I ran this one on dirt, it broke in the elbow all the time.
- 21:44It was a rough dirt track.
- 21:45It was the one I run an asphalt.
- 21:46The other one, I took the screw off and screwed it in and it had quarter orange
- 21:50titanium rods on either side of it had all laminated so it wouldn't break.
- 21:53And that's the way I drove that one.
- 21:55I drove on dirt and this one, I drove an asphalt.
- 21:57That's why I had a big bag.
- 21:58I had a lot of things in my bag.
- 22:01Anyway, he came in after that warmup.
- 22:04He may not remember this, but somewhere along the line, his regular hook
- 22:08bounced off the wheel and his right arm was banging on the right rear tire.
- 22:14And he came in and there was rubber all over his hook.
- 22:17And the guys on the track that didn't know this was Jimmy McGuire,
- 22:20his arms bouncing on the back and they thought I lost every hand.
- 22:25And then you flip the guy's car.
- 22:28You know, I was gonna bid on that neck brace they had.
- 22:31But it said on their living legend that I didn't know you were still alive.
- 22:35Well, you know, I thought it was, wait a minute, February 5th this year down in
- 22:40Daytona, I never had NASCAR in my life, but they made me a living legend along
- 22:44with Larry McReynolds, uh, Kyle Pit.
- 22:47Oh, that's right.
- 22:47That's what this show's all about, him being a living legend.
- 22:50I forgot about that.
- 22:51And it says, and I got this February 5th.
- 22:542023. Honest to God, I was invited to come down.
- 22:58So Mario and Dirty sponsored three tables because you know, I make friends easy.
- 23:02I cost eight.
- 23:03We're gonna have Mario's introduction for McGuire, so, so $800 a
- 23:08table had cost these sponsors.
- 23:09I had a good time.
- 23:10All my friend showed up.
- 23:11My daughter's come down from Boston.
- 23:13One come, my daughters are there, and my grandsons were there.
- 23:15So a matter of fact, Mario gave me a tribute, which is on the wall.
- 23:19My grandson, 19 years old, gave me, he presented me the Hall of Fame down there
- 23:24and they said, and it's all written on the wall then It's not the bathroom wall,
- 23:28it's the wall over there, Mario Speech is on top and the grandsons on the bottom.
- 23:33It's got a picture of Mario and I together in 63 the year he finished
- 23:38Second Points with the A RDC and I won the championship in URC.
- 23:41So that's all on the wall if you want to look at it.
- 23:43But anyway.
- 23:45I got pictures taken with Kyle Petty and all the other guys.
- 23:48But Larry Res was first getting, and he had to leave right away.
- 23:51He had to be on TV the next day, so he left right away.
- 23:54So I never got a picture, but this year I'm planning to
- 23:56go up and I hope he's there.
- 23:57I want, I get a picture taken with him.
- 23:58But that was quite, so I got in there with those guys and those
- 24:01guys were real nascat guys.
- 24:02And I was just an outsider.
- 24:04You know what they call me?
- 24:05They call me a Saturday night hero.
- 24:07And I guess that pissed me.
- 24:08They call the award was a Saturday night hero.
- 24:10Saturday night special was always a gun to me.
- 24:13No Saturday night, right?
- 24:15Didn't I win the at A RDC at at Grandview because I was good with the fans.
- 24:19Right?
- 24:20Now you, Ernie Saxon had a favorite driver of roll water something every
- 24:23year, and I won six years in a row.
- 24:25They finally ended it because nobody else could win it.
- 24:28And I was a ham.
- 24:29I was a ham.
- 24:30I'd get down an intermission, sit in the stands with all the fans, sign autographs.
- 24:34You ran second three times by the way.
- 24:37So I'd get down to the fans, I talk with him, invite him up the trailer afterwards,
- 24:41and I was the only one that allowed to have the dog in the pistol thing.
- 24:44He was on the trailer at Benjamin.
- 24:45And the kids would come around, I'd sign autographs with the kids that that bench.
- 24:48So I was kind of a, a happy fan, you know, with the fans.
- 24:52That's why they voted for me.
- 24:53I guess I had a rule at Grand Grandview, whenever I wanna race,
- 24:57the kids had to all come in with me.
- 24:58They weren't allowed to give me the presentation, take pictures,
- 25:01unless the kids were with me.
- 25:02So I have several pictures of me with all the kids when I went, they'd be in
- 25:05there and I hold a checkered flag and the kids would be in Victory Lane with me.
- 25:09That's why I guess I got the most popular drive right.
- 25:11I get the most That's true.
- 25:13Yes.
- 25:13You were very good with the fence.
- 25:15And the promoters like me and the, the photographers like me.
- 25:19Why?
- 25:19Because every time the picture was taken with a hundred kids, how about
- 25:22the beauty queen down in Australia?
- 25:24Did she like it?
- 25:25Wait, wait a minute.
- 25:26We're not getting in Australia anymore.
- 25:27That's another story.
- 25:29So anyway, when I would, when I would, when I would get in the fans, hey five
- 25:35spin out, there'd be a hundred, there'd be a hundred kids in that picture, right?
- 25:38The next week the photographer there would sell the pictures.
- 25:41He made a ton of dope with me and Victory Lane.
- 25:43'cause all the fans wanted that kid in that picture.
- 25:46Take a breath, take a breath.
- 25:47I'll keep, if you're right, I don't want to be, I'll tell you that now.
- 25:52That was pretty much all truth.
- 25:53Pretty much, pretty much.
- 25:55I exaggerate on a few things, like a talks about getting one more fish
- 25:59than you should want, but I have fun.
- 26:01Hey Jim.
- 26:01I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow over again.
- 26:08Not in the morning, I hope.
- 26:12I'm not taking off till four o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
- 26:16What type of car did you lose your arm in?
- 26:18It was, it was a sprint car, and Bobby Marshman drove in.
- 26:21Usac.
- 26:22Now I was in USAC now, so he had a stock car race that day.
- 26:25So he called me up and because he was a former URC pupil, he
- 26:28said, do you want to drive it?
- 26:29I didn't have ride because my car owner, which I did good in, I, I ran
- 26:32a car that was owned by AJ Watson and I took a second and third to flight in
- 26:36my debut, and then I, so I wanted to go racing, so, uh, yeah, I said, I wanna go.
- 26:41It was, I was already living on Indianapolis.
- 26:43He said, you got my car if you want it.
- 26:44So I got in it.
- 26:46And, uh, now normally if the car was owned eight cylinders,
- 26:48I would've qualified further.
- 26:50But the les that only had seven cylinders in it, I didn't care.
- 26:52I went.
- 26:53So I qualified.
- 26:54Good.
- 26:54I qualified fourth fastest Les, when you have only seven
- 26:57cylinders, you don't do the pickup.
- 26:59So I had to go three.
- 27:00Hes, before I qualified, I qualified ninth.
- 27:03Well with cylinders, but I worked my way up to fifth and that's when the, he spun.
- 27:07Once you ran two laps over the end, the thing was built up, you know, the speed
- 27:11was built up and I caught guys, as long as the race went on, I pass guys and of
- 27:15course the guy spun out in front of me.
- 27:17Chuck Booth spun in front of me and instead of staying there, he backed up
- 27:20the racetrack and I got pictures of it.
- 27:22He's backing up and my left front wheel hits his left rear wheel
- 27:26and I, he did a barrel side rolls.
- 27:28And when you do it, no rinse, they, they're wild looking into over
- 27:30rinse, but those are the best ones to take because only the front and
- 27:33the back of hitting, you're in the race guy, you're not hitting it.
- 27:35When you are a side roll, you head hits the ground, you knocked out immediately
- 27:39and that's when most drivers, you look back at K with side rolls because back
- 27:43in those days, because you didn't do a side rail, you had hits, head hits
- 27:46the ground, you're out like a light.
- 27:47So that's what happened to me.
- 27:49But Bobby Martin in the car drove that and that's, I lost Miami.
- 27:53And another thing would probably be Marshman car.
- 27:55Most robots are three or four inches behind.
- 27:57Behind your head.
- 27:58Bobby Marshman car was right eve with your head.
- 28:01So of course when I started flipping with my arms when the car
- 28:04landed, the robot saved my life.
- 28:06But I took my arm off because the arm was between the roll bar on the ground
- 28:09and a message that was new Bernan, right?
- 28:12And I didn't wake up till two days later.
- 28:13So I didn't feel anything.
- 28:14I didn't know what the hell happened.
- 28:15All I know is I woke up, I could still see me waking up in the hospital.
- 28:19My dad was there, my girlfriend was there, which eventually became
- 28:21my wife, Henry Banks was there, all the big shots for insurance.
- 28:25I was gonna act.
- 28:26I woke up and I said, whoa.
- 28:27I go, well on.
- 28:28I got.
- 28:28And I simply said, I got a new challenge in life.
- 28:31They all looked at each other and said, well this guy's wacky.
- 28:34Said they all left.
- 28:35I had my one out.
- 28:36First thing I asked for was a pencil.
- 28:38'cause I had to learn how to write with the left hand.
- 28:40And the whole six months I was in the hospital, I wrote, I learned how to write.
- 28:43And you know what?
- 28:44If you ever talk to anybody that has lost a limb, when you learn how to
- 28:47write even with your other hand, by writing 'em the same thing as my right
- 28:51hand, you look at the signature, the only thing is it goes to the left.
- 28:54If I turn the paper sideways and I write, you can't tell a my right hand
- 28:58or my left hand because you learn.
- 29:00Your brain only knows one way to write.
- 29:02You write slow.
- 29:03But it's, I had to go back to drafting.
- 29:05My printing is the same as it was my right.
- 29:07You do it slower.
- 29:08Your brain only is one way.
- 29:09The right.
- 29:10So it goes back how I learn to write.
- 29:12'cause I still have the feeling right now.
- 29:14I'm giving the finger to Paxton.
- 29:21If I had this shirt off, you talk to your nerves are still,
- 29:25you have phip pain right now.
- 29:27If you looked at my arm off, you see a little nerve tch in there.
- 29:31That's my little finger.
- 29:36Take a picture of that.
- 29:40I'm glad you straightened that out.
- 29:43I've been told I'm number one.
- 29:44Before
- 29:47when I laid in the hospital it hurt.
- 29:49I did not tell him, okay, I'm laying there and they said to me.
- 29:52Chuck Hal also.
- 29:53That was the number one driver for the Dean of Van Lion team.
- 29:56I was gonna take a test in the second car just to see if I could drive
- 29:59an Indy car, but it never happened.
- 30:01Sunday, I lost my arm.
- 30:02The next day I was supposed to sign my driver assist at Indy.
- 30:05So Wednesday I'm in the hospital, Jim Mcg again and Clint
- 30:08Brown and come in to see me.
- 30:09First they offered the ride to Roger Chop Penske.
- 30:11He said, no, I ain't gonna drive any car.
- 30:14Me, I don't want be killed.
- 30:15Roger Chop.
- 30:15Penske a nice guy, great for racing, but he drove sporty cars.
- 30:19The ones that beat behind when they want to pass.
- 30:21That's what he drove.
- 30:22I'm laying in the hospital of bed and they said, who are we gonna get for a driver?
- 30:25I said, well, did you ever hear of Andrei?
- 30:27He's only, yeah, he's a good midget driver.
- 30:29We read.
- 30:30But he's the only 120 pounds and he only five foot four.
- 30:33I pointed to my foot in bed and I said, he's got it there.
- 30:36And I took my hand, I went, he's got it here.
- 30:39Give him a shot at it.
- 30:39Jim, you don't have any.
- 30:40And see Jim again.
- 30:41And I go to go up to Boston in the same racetracks.
- 30:44He was a mechanic and I was a driver.
- 30:45That's how I knew him real good.
- 30:46He watched me as I was going through my career and he said, well, in the
- 30:49wintertime he said, we'll give you a test.
- 30:51And when I did good news act, he said, we'll give you a test at, didn't he?
- 30:54So it was all set up.
- 30:57I said to him, give Andre a shot.
- 30:59And I said, you don't have a driver.
- 31:00If you don't like it, get rid of him.
- 31:02You don't have a drive.
- 31:02Give him a shot and see what happens.
- 31:04Well, he gave him a shot and as the story goes, all the rest is history.
- 31:07And he goes, well, let's driving race here.
- 31:08And and another thing, he took a lot of flips.
- 31:10Did a lot of crashes, but that's one of the reasons he never got
- 31:13hurt, except why he was so small.
- 31:15He was way inside the race car.
- 31:16So that's it.
- 31:17That's the story, my Andre.
- 31:18Now we get there.
- 31:20So we do have this introduction to show you for Mario Andretti that he did for Mr.
- 31:26McGuire, and we'll play that here.
- 31:29The awards, when I had the, uh, when I, when I got last February, I got the award
- 31:34for, uh, setting a hero for legends.
- 31:37So, uh, Mario gave a speech there for me and somebody videotaped
- 31:42it and the certificate speech, and I cried after I heard it.
- 31:45I called him up and I said, I wanna go back driving a restart again.
- 31:48So I listened to the speech.
- 31:50It's only a minute, nine seconds long.
- 31:52And here we go.
- 31:53Hello everyone.
- 31:54I'm pleased you're honoring Jim McGuire this evening.
- 31:58Our friendship goes back to the early sixties when we were both carving
- 32:03our own way through our careers.
- 32:05He was really on his way to the top, no question about it.
- 32:11What's most impressive to me is after this accident, Jim showed
- 32:15you can't keep a good man down.
- 32:18He reinvented himself by learning to write with his left hand and
- 32:23continuing work as a draft man, and designing and creating a system.
- 32:29There were allowed his prosthetic arm to connect with the
- 32:32steering wheel of a race car.
- 32:34He was back on track racing again, but not just racing, winning,
- 32:41winning against the very best.
- 32:44So Jim, I congratulate you on this very special recognition and thank you for
- 32:51being such an inspiration to all of us.
- 33:01Call him up the next day and I said, buy me a race car.
- 33:03I'm spied.
- 33:03I want to go back.
- 33:06He said, when I go to a place and somebody talks about me, I
- 33:08feel like going back racing too.
- 33:10But we said we're too old.
- 33:11I said, I agree with you.
- 33:12So glad you enjoy it.
- 33:13God, it was only, it was only a minute long, so that was it.
- 33:16Good.
- 33:16So.
- 33:17He knew your crash record.
- 33:18He wasn't buying a car for you.
- 33:22I get you.
- 33:23Smart ass
- 33:26boy.
- 33:26We got a lot of stories from Mario.
- 33:27Come here.
- 33:28We have a lot of stories.
- 33:30We may have to say a little, because we have a lot of stories.
- 33:33Mario, I Hey.
- 33:34You get some booze in him.
- 33:35You hear a lot of merrier stories.
- 33:37Something you don't wanna hear.
- 33:38I, I've heard the, the Hershey and the Yeah, yeah.
- 33:42There you go.
- 33:42Yeah.
- 33:42You wanna talk about Hershey?
- 33:44I didn't think so did you?
- 33:45I heard you had a woman visit you in the camper.
- 33:48I don't drink anymore.
- 33:50And that's one, that's one of the reasons, yeah.
- 33:52The camp.
- 33:52Oh yeah.
- 33:53Heard that really?
- 33:57Oh, you wanna hear that?
- 33:58Can I tell a story now?
- 33:59We gotta tell story.
- 33:59No, no, it's just a family show.
- 34:02Stay away from that story, then you find out what we're really doing to her show.
- 34:07Well, is anybody enjoying this talking here at all?
- 34:10What's going on
- 34:13again, again, you gotta make the fans happy.
- 34:16That's what it's all about.
- 34:18I'd like to, but uh, I don't have a chance.
- 34:22When you came back to the midgets, who did you drive for first?
- 34:25Not the TQ with, uh, Bob, but it was, uh, four Midgets, uh, first race back.
- 34:29I was driving for Eddie Tow, really any out for a year.
- 34:33I drove for him.
- 34:34First time I drove for him was over to New Jersey and asphalt.
- 34:37I finished nine.
- 34:38He was very happy with, because he just bought the car.
- 34:40He got the car and Ed clinic is taking care of the car, and I
- 34:43guess he recommended the driver.
- 34:44So I got in the car.
- 34:46Then as the time went on, I got better in the car and we had a Bobby Marshall
- 34:50Memorial at, uh, Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
- 34:53That was the track that he, he promoted.
- 34:56A RDC and that was my kind track as I went there.
- 34:59In sprint cars, I go in the counter, I take the lead in the first lap, 49 laps.
- 35:04I led that race, touch shape was right behind me, led the race.
- 35:07Just kept my foot to the floor.
- 35:08See a Hatfield if you're in it good, you just kept your foot to the floor.
- 35:11You were in right in the rim high bank.
- 35:13You didn't have to take your foot outta the throttle.
- 35:15The last lap.
- 35:16I said, geez, I'm gonna win.
- 35:17I see the white.
- 35:18I'm gonna win this race.
- 35:19So I come off the bank, right?
- 35:20I come off the bank, come down, and Dutch Shaer goes right around the
- 35:23outside of me and wins the race.
- 35:24I make more money than he did because I let every lap and then get front money.
- 35:28The fans pulled the hell outta him.
- 35:30He beat me, but he finished second and I told him Victory Land.
- 35:33I said to George, er, well, I wanted to win you your son's memorial, because
- 35:37footy did for me after I lost my arm.
- 35:39'cause I lost the arm in his sprint car that he drove.
- 35:42He had a ride with a stock high that day.
- 35:44So he asked if I'd wanna run.
- 35:45So I ran it.
- 35:45But he F so he helped me out along the way with my rehabilitation.
- 35:49Touch Safer won the race.
- 35:50I made more money than, than I can say now.
- 35:52It took me seven times to run in the Bobby Marsh Memorial race.
- 35:55I finished second, third, fourth.
- 35:57Every time I got in a car, I was leaving it.
- 35:59I dropped back when I finally won it, when I bought a car, George
- 36:03just bought a race car finally.
- 36:05It had nothing to do for a year.
- 36:06He bought a race car, miss you.
- 36:07He was the sprint car owner, so he bought a car for him and we go up
- 36:11there with the Vene and Frank Jennings.
- 36:13They brought the car up with him.
- 36:14We go up to Bloomberg, Pennsylvania.
- 36:16I'm sorry, bus Milwaukee was the car.
- 36:18See Jake Vago.
- 36:19Let me take the midget out.
- 36:20I was gonna run it during the month of May if I had passed my driver's test.
- 36:23'cause that in those days, every night across the street from the Speedway, they
- 36:27had a quarter mile track and they were in the track across the street from the
- 36:29speed all the drivers in practice, they go in the midget the night and eventually
- 36:33that went to Mario for the month of May.
- 36:34But anyway, I was gonna drive it.
- 36:36Jake Vago gave me the car and I took it out there.
- 36:39So then when I wanted to run midget there, in fact get back in
- 36:43midgets, it was after the TQ season.
- 36:46I had done good.
- 36:46I won the hundred lap and I won the championship for Paulson.
- 36:49So I called him up and I said, Hey, can you bring the car up to, uh, Bloomsburg?
- 36:54I'd like to run for you again.
- 36:55Yeah, okay.
- 36:55I'll sit bus walkie with him.
- 36:57So bus walkie rides to the car.
- 36:59He was the type, if anybody knows the name, bus walkie, obviously you know him.
- 37:02He was a mechanic, a big Indianapolis mechanic and a driver.
- 37:05And so he took the car up there.
- 37:07Anyway, I got in the car.
- 37:08I led the race for 24 laps, again, long, around 24 laps.
- 37:13The same thing.
- 37:14I'm running good.
- 37:15It's like I back off in the third and fourth turn 'cause I won, I won this race.
- 37:19Who goes around the outside of me?
- 37:21Bill Brown and, and Eddie Dar Scott wins the race.
- 37:24The fans booed the hell out of him, but again, he made only 600 bucks.
- 37:28Win the race.
- 37:28I made 850 because I got a lot money.
- 37:31That's what Gil Brown, I finally won that race with George Ey gave me a ride.
- 37:36I led the race, the whole race, and I won the race.
- 37:38And I think I got a picture there someplace with Frank
- 37:41Jennings, his son and, uh, me winning the race of Bloomsburg.
- 37:44I finally won the volume and I, and I had tears when I was
- 37:48up there on the stage with Mr.
- 37:49Marshall.
- 37:50I was crying because I said it took me seven years to win
- 37:53this Bobby Marshall Memorial.
- 37:54So, and he was, he had tears in his eyes too because, you know, it was his son.
- 37:58And I always wanted to do that and I always win that.
- 38:00Bobby Marshall Memorial took me seven races to win it, but I
- 38:03finally wanted, and, and like Far Gump says to the movie, and that's
- 38:07all I got to say about the matter.
- 38:09That's funny.
- 38:10'cause my first midget ride was with Ed Toth at Mahoning Valley in 1971.
- 38:15You were almost retired by then.
- 38:17Yeah, I Did he tell you I won the first race with him?
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:20And I won the first race.
- 38:21I was first race on him.
- 38:23Then that year, after that year, then he went to, with Williams going,
- 38:26he bought a sprint car, I think.
- 38:28Yeah.
- 38:29I, I had something to do with that.
- 38:30Oh, you did?
- 38:30Okay.
- 38:31You did you drive the sprint?
- 38:32Yeah, I destroyed his midget, so I went sprint car.
- 38:34Oh, that's, that's he went, he went with Oz. Yes.
- 38:38Ozzie built the cars and drove.
- 38:39He was a good car.
- 38:40I he a good guy.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41Did he get steering that sprint car?
- 38:43I don't know if he had, I was gonna call him and see.
- 38:47He had steering, but I was happy running mid.
- 38:49No, I was, he might have later on, but not at first.
- 38:51He did.
- 38:51Yeah.
- 38:51Right.
- 38:51Because I, if I had punched a guy, I would've talked
- 38:53to him and let me drive it.
- 38:55I had a good way with words with car owners.
- 38:57That was a good race.
- 38:57Car isn't midget.
- 38:58Oh yeah.
- 38:59Back in those days, they were all rigu sprint cars with Offie and Hickey took
- 39:03em care of most of the cars, you know, Offie, when I, when I ran for all the
- 39:07time, I had afi, just like Ferguson ran the five years I ran for Ferguson.
- 39:11Fergu had office.
- 39:12Yeah.
- 39:12And you ran him with afi, but he ran No, I didn't run an off.
- 39:15You didn't have an off?
- 39:16What did you have?
- 39:17I ran a Sesco.
- 39:18Oh, you had a Sesco?
- 39:18Okay.
- 39:19Yeah, that was later on.
- 39:20Oh, then I was done.
- 39:22I Was that when you were in Caleb's car?
- 39:23Yeah.
- 39:24Okay.
- 39:24That's right.
- 39:25You were gonna win the championship.
- 39:26Yeah.
- 39:27Right.
- 39:27Okay.
- 39:28But you didn't win Williams Grove that day.
- 39:29I guarantee that.
- 39:31I wanna ask you a question.
- 39:33You have a guy by the name of Shark that comes here and his
- 39:36grandfather had a race car.
- 39:37Yes, yes.
- 39:38That I ball up at Lincoln.
- 39:40Did anybody?
- 39:40Oh, I didn't know you tore sharks car up down there.
- 39:43Yeah, that's a whole story.
- 39:44Yeah.
- 39:46Well, you had come after me, then you'll be, you'll be at a retake.
- 39:48It didn't have a safety there.
- 39:50It came out.
- 39:51I went up in the air.
- 39:53There's no picture.
- 39:54Oh, you crashed too.
- 39:55Oh my God.
- 39:56Crash.
- 39:58I broke my back that day.
- 39:59Broke your back from out on a race car like Superman.
- 40:03And I landed in the infield and it had it raining and it was like mud.
- 40:08So when I landed, it was a soft landing, but my ass was sore and I had to
- 40:14drive home from Lincoln with a broken back and went to the hospital the
- 40:18next day and then got the operation.
- 40:20But sure when they got there, they didn't have a driver.
- 40:24And they said, am I interested?
- 40:25I said, yeah.
- 40:26Hell yeah.
- 40:27And it was a rocket.
- 40:28Had a good motor.
- 40:30I don't know what that frame was made out of, but they said the
- 40:33back and the front fold together.
- 40:35If I'd have stayed that car, I'd have been drunk.
- 40:39So I came out of the car like, you think you're better than junk right now?
- 40:43Well, I made it this far.
- 40:44All right.
- 40:45I not, and I'm not in the junk yard yet.
- 40:49Thank you.
- 40:50You all guys think you're the only ones that crashed, right?
- 40:53Yeah.
- 40:54Well, he wanted finally to admit to come up and say he crashed.
- 40:57That was great.
- 40:58Well, I had 15 crashes in my career.
- 41:00Flips rather.
- 41:01I had a lot of crashes, but I had 15 flips.
- 41:03I probably had more than 15 crashes and one championship.
- 41:06I, but I always won.
- 41:08I always won.
- 41:09I won more races.
- 41:10How many guys here won 52 races?
- 41:12Accident won 250.
- 41:13I'm sorry.
- 41:16And how many have done it with?
- 41:1731 with one arm.
- 41:19And 22 with two ounce.
- 41:22I I wait to the fans for the other one.
- 41:27I got the two covered.
- 41:29I got a picture of me in Victory Lane.
- 41:31Now they beat foot before they took it away from me and
- 41:33I got the four foot trophy.
- 41:34Hey Joe.
- 41:35Hold.
- 41:35Hold it up there.
- 41:37Explain it.
- 41:37Hold the mic at the same time we wanna watch.
- 41:40Okay.
- 41:40That night I won.
- 41:42I got Bill's daughter in one here, her mother's right behind us, so it
- 41:46was all legal to see in the picture.
- 41:47And I'm holding her and giving her a big kiss for about a minute, and
- 41:50then everybody's laughing like hell behind me, you can see in the picture.
- 41:53And I got my, that time I had two arms.
- 41:56I'm holding a four foot trophy.
- 41:58Whenever my daughter shows that picture to French, she says, oh, that's my mother.
- 42:01That's his wife.
- 42:04The daughter shows that.
- 42:05She says he kids' wife.
- 42:07How about the queen down in, uh, Australia?
- 42:10What about her?
- 42:13You weren't there.
- 42:13You don't know what went on.
- 42:14I read the paper.
- 42:15I know.
- 42:18Well, what happened there?
- 42:19I, I went to Australia in 69.
- 42:21That was a nice deal.
- 42:23I had six races over there.
- 42:24Has anybody here ever been to Australia?
- 42:27Okay.
- 42:27It is about the same size as the United States.
- 42:30New York is is Sydney, Texas is Adelaide and Perth is California
- 42:35and I raced in all three places.
- 42:37When you run to Australia a Holden, I won a Holden.
- 42:40A Holden is a Chevy two over there.
- 42:42They call 'em Holden's.
- 42:43It was Chevy when I won races.
- 42:44Third and a win a hundred lap in Adelaide.
- 42:47I had an offie that was the caliber of the road, so I won with the
- 42:49roads a quarter mile track, and the guy was behind me the whole time.
- 42:52They had champion.
- 42:54But he couldn't get by me 'cause I ran the car, I put the car sideways,
- 42:57I'd watch him, it was a small truck, and I'd watch him shadows behind me.
- 43:01Wherever he'd go high with the shadow.
- 43:02I'd get in front of him when there was no shadow.
- 43:04I knew he was underneath me, so I'd cut him off and go high
- 43:07back and forth, back and forth.
- 43:08That's the way the whole race was won.
- 43:10And I got a picture going on the car to finish line.
- 43:12He's right on my tail.
- 43:13Uh, did you ever drive a VW Power Plant car?
- 43:15Oh yeah.
- 43:16What are you talking about?
- 43:17With Eddie Dar, it was the first time I drove one and I got him.
- 43:20We'd run the Silver Dome and do it when I went on.
- 43:22He, he wanted to go.
- 43:23So he hated my guts but he wanted to go because bench was gone.
- 43:27And I got the invite to go out there.
- 43:29'cause Mario said he, the way we got to go out there, Mario said he was
- 43:32gonna be cheap and get another car.
- 43:33Of course he never showed up.
- 43:34But I got the ride out there and that was the first time a Volkswagen
- 43:37said, wow, it's a good car.
- 43:39And we didn't do anything there.
- 43:40We made the race for, didn't do anything.
- 43:42But then the next time I drove the car was when Hank Rogers was running a car.
- 43:46He won the championship but he had to do a wedding.
- 43:48So he called me up and he said, I talked to, I drove for Mike Chin once with an
- 43:52off hit and I won the race at IC Junction.
- 43:54That was one of the very few times I'm the only driver ever to win the
- 43:57midget race at IC Junction on Friday.
- 44:00And the next day I went, I won the sprint race.
- 44:01It was the easiest car.
- 44:02So I did drive for Mike.
- 44:03She, so he said, okay, let Jim drive it.
- 44:05I get in the car at Middletown, the York and Wow.
- 44:09I won the heat running good.
- 44:10It rained out.
- 44:11The feature rained out.
- 44:12I never ran the car.
- 44:13And that was the only time I ever ran a Volkswagen that I, in the feature truck.
- 44:16I probably didn't wanted it.
- 44:17It was fast, fast, race, car and, but that was the only time we had a Volkswagen.
- 44:21They were good.
- 44:22Yeah, I ran SESCO's, but then when I got to, uh, Sydney, the guy who owned
- 44:27the car was an engineer, smart guy.
- 44:29He had a fiat in there.
- 44:30And the fiat was a tough runner.
- 44:32And, and it's still a tough runner in Formula One car, but
- 44:35he had a 600 of fiat in that.
- 44:37And of course he couldn't run hard with, he just about made the race.
- 44:41When I got in it, first of all, all the guys, the beginning guys
- 44:44all raised 60 pounds inside weight.
- 44:46When I got in the car to get in it for warmups, I couldn't even
- 44:49lift the rear left rear tire.
- 44:51I took three turns outta the left.
- 44:52Dang.
- 44:53I put three turns the right way, and I got weight on the outside.
- 44:56Kyle was straight as an arrow.
- 44:57I went everything I wanted, the heat, the semi, the match
- 44:59race, and I won the feature.
- 45:01So when I went home, I said, that's the way you gotta run the car.
- 45:04But he said, but the car was so straight under dirt, don't you go sideways?
- 45:07And he said, no, that's why I won everybody else's
- 45:09sideways and I'm straight.
- 45:11So that's, that's what happened over there.
- 45:12They, they, they brought up heavyweight in the inside and
- 45:16all the race cars were sideways.
- 45:18Everybody was side.
- 45:19And as long as the top guys run sideways, all the other guys do the same thing.
- 45:22Stare all running sideways.
- 45:23When you are run sideways, sure you look, you can win as long
- 45:26as everybody else is sideways.
- 45:28Well, when I went over, I kept my race car straight and every time I'm
- 45:30at the corner that's how I'd pass.
- 45:32I'd pass him on the inside.
- 45:33Coming off that picture over there, if you look at it, me
- 45:35and usac Mario was sideways.
- 45:37And I'm straight and narrow.
- 45:38And you win races when you're straight.
- 45:40That's how you get the whole bike.
- 45:41But the dangerous thing about that is when you hit a chuck
- 45:43hole, tips over much easier.
- 45:46You just gotta make sure that the, the rear is over the hole and the front
- 45:50coast of the, and so I was lucky like that outside race is the place to go.
- 45:54When I ran asphalt, like down the wall stadium and I always had 30 pounds outside
- 45:58weight with an offie and I won down there.
- 46:00And uh, always on asphalt, I ran outside weight, put a little more on asphalt.
- 46:04But when I ran the dirt tracks, I ran 15 to 20 pounds outside weight.
- 46:07Remember the midges little smaller when you run a sprint car, I imagine like
- 46:11those guys, when you see kings with them guys, they had to run at least.
- 46:1560, 70 pounds the outside weight.
- 46:17'cause that's why their right front tire lifted up, you know, and
- 46:20you ever see the sprint go on the probably 60, 80 pounds outside weight.
- 46:23That's how they keep their foot to the floor.
- 46:25When you give your foot to the floor, you take your foot out, the
- 46:28front end wants to push right away was the right front, so light.
- 46:30But all those will, and even now, Williams Grove, you see they
- 46:34keep the foot right to the floor.
- 46:35They took their foot outta the floor, the right front, and
- 46:37they'd go right to the wall.
- 46:38But you gotta keep your foot to the floor.
- 46:40It makes that right front real light and, uh, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 46:44I won four outta six races over there.
- 46:47I finished third and, uh, one of the, my first time over there, and
- 46:50then I crashed in the other one.
- 46:52What else?
- 46:53So anyway, uh, imagine something like that doesn't matter.
- 46:56Oh no.
- 46:56Wait a minute.
- 46:57I didn't crash.
- 46:58They have a rule when I you driving on the wrong side of the track.
- 47:00At Perth.
- 47:01At Perth, what they do at Perth, they have a guy at each end of the
- 47:05corner and they have a white curb going on a six foot square curb.
- 47:09If you hit that curb, you disqualified.
- 47:11They, they say wife, they see a tire, so they watch it.
- 47:13So I was on my second race, I was racing.
- 47:17I hit the curb.
- 47:17I didn't know that was the rule.
- 47:19And I had black tie mark on.
- 47:20They dis, even though I won the race, they disqualified me 'cause I hit that tire.
- 47:24So I made sure the next time I didn't do that, I stayed out and I did not, they had
- 47:28a white curb going around the racetrack and I said, boy, that nobody ever told
- 47:32me if you hit it, you're disqualified.
- 47:33So I got disqualified.
- 47:34Otherwise I would've won three races over there.
- 47:36But I won two races there and I came back to Adelaide.
- 47:40I took, I won a hundred lap there, then I went to Sydney and one
- 47:42there and, uh, how about the queen?
- 47:45Oh, now the queen.
- 47:45Okay, this is the queen that was in Adelaide.
- 47:48My wife was over.
- 47:49We all go to the beach with the, the car owner, which was a rich
- 47:52guy who one the newspaper owned.
- 47:54Odd guy.
- 47:54He owned everything and he brought me over from the, he owned the racetrack.
- 47:57We ran Adelaide, owned that racetrack.
- 47:59Finished third, my first time there.
- 48:01Then about six ladies, I'm back there on lap.
- 48:04Uh, we go to the beach and we're at the beach.
- 48:06During the week, nanny was taking care of the kids, boyfriend
- 48:08was there and everything else.
- 48:09We were all at the beach having a good time.
- 48:11She says to me, oh, Mr. Benign asked me to be the queen for Saturday night's race.
- 48:15You know, this is like Wednesday or Thursday.
- 48:17I said, well, who's gonna finish second?
- 48:19She says, what do you mean?
- 48:20I said, well, if you're gonna be the Queen, I'm gonna win the race.
- 48:23She says, why?
- 48:24She says, because in America we kiss girls when we win the race.
- 48:27So my boyfriend's laughing, my wife's laughing, and my wife
- 48:30would say, yeah, that's right.
- 48:31When you win a race you kiss the queen.
- 48:33So, you know, that was just a joke.
- 48:35Saturday night comes, I win the race.
- 48:38So anyway, I win the race.
- 48:39So as we're going to victory circle over there, they don't
- 48:41give trophies, they give coffee.
- 48:43Tea sets a big tray with four cups on it and a tea.
- 48:46Dang.
- 48:47So anyway, in the newspaper, as the article outcome comes out the next week.
- 48:50We could do the kissing.
- 48:51I kiss her and all that stuff, but then I picked her up.
- 48:53Right now she only weighed about a hundred pounds by one arm.
- 48:55They picked her up.
- 48:56She was in a bikini.
- 48:57I walk all the way across the racetrack.
- 48:59They report this in the racer paper.
- 49:01They say, I guess in America they take the trophy girl home with him, because
- 49:04Jim, Jim McGuire was seen leaving the racetrack, and I was born on the stands.
- 49:08I sat her down beside her boyfriend and my wife was there too.
- 49:11And the whole crew, everybody's laughing, all the fans are laughing.
- 49:14So that's what happened.
- 49:15The newspaper didn't know that.
- 49:16I carried it in the stand.
- 49:17They thought I took her home.
- 49:18They said, I guess, I guess in America they take the trophy home.
- 49:22So that's what's in the race paper.
- 49:24So that was the joke.
- 49:26How many times did you go back to Australia?
- 49:28To Australia?
- 49:29I don't.
- 49:30They went again.
- 49:30I never went again.
- 49:31Never went again.
- 49:32They never invited.
- 49:32Well, I wouldn't go anyway because they wouldn't let him back in.
- 49:37No, I never, I never went back again.
- 49:39I think what it was, I wanted more money.
- 49:41That's what it was.
- 49:42I wanted more money.
- 49:42See what they did, they, it was a good deal going over there.
- 49:45They paid your expenses, playing gift you going over, they gave
- 49:48you a certain amount of money no matter whether you win or loss.
- 49:50They gave you the same amount of money.
- 49:52In other words, I forget what it was, it was good money.
- 49:54I mean, I made money outta it.
- 49:55I come home with a few thousand in my pocket.
- 49:57It was more money, but you get it guaranteed no matter whether
- 49:59you crash the win or whatever.
- 50:00My name was the name.
- 50:01So the next year I went back, I knew it.
- 50:03I asked for a little bit more money and I wanted a percentage of the purse.
- 50:07They said, no, I can't do this because I had a good ride back in the United States.
- 50:10And uh, who was I driving by then at that time?
- 50:12So where here?
- 50:14Ferguson?
- 50:14I think it was Ferguson.
- 50:15Ferguson probably.
- 50:16Yeah.
- 50:16Yeah.
- 50:17And I had a better deal there with Ferguson.
- 50:18So you had a deal with Ferguson?
- 50:20Oh yeah.
- 50:20I got 50%.
- 50:21Well, yeah, there was nobody else in the car when you got there.
- 50:23'cause I tried that.
- 50:24So wait a minute.
- 50:25I only got 40% when I drove, but when I went in, I, he gave me 50%, 50% and plus.
- 50:31He had a nice wife too.
- 50:35I drove him for five years.
- 50:38He's got a better midget record than you.
- 50:40He drove a midget once and won.
- 50:42That's right.
- 50:43No, I drove twice.
- 50:44Twice.
- 50:44Oh, okay.
- 50:45I ran sales because we probably could have won up there, but we kept popping.
- 50:48Right.
- 50:48Retire off.
- 50:50Not a bad record.
- 50:51Did I run against you when you won that night?
- 50:53Yeah.
- 50:54Oh, I did.
- 50:54Oh, I was in the other camp.
- 50:55You were in the camp car.
- 50:56I, I finished second.
- 50:57You're right.
- 50:57No, you finished third.
- 50:58Okay.
- 50:59Sorry.
- 51:00To a guy like you, you had two, two guys in front of me drove with two arms.
- 51:04I had a handicap.
- 51:05I was the first handicapped.
- 51:06You had a handicap with two arms.
- 51:08I want to tell you
- 51:11I was handicapped, so I figured I won the race with a handicap.
- 51:14I was the best handicapped driver there.
- 51:15Yep.
- 51:18Now, does anybody wanna ask me a question?
- 51:20I've given you a lot of, I got a question for you to ask Lynn.
- 51:24You have, you had 50 wins?
- 51:2652. I want you to ask Lynn the truth.
- 51:29Stand low.
- 51:30And Smokey SBA told me that half a Lynn's 250 winds were in a snowmobile come
- 51:43race.
- 51:43Hey, wait a minute, I'm a race.
- 51:44Well, when is the wind?
- 51:46I ask the wind
- 51:50if he ran.
- 51:51That's the first time he's ever defended me in his life.
- 51:56Look,
- 51:59house for two days.
- 52:00Speak to me.
- 52:01His wife's nice at night.
- 52:02Everybody's nice.
- 52:03His kids at nice.
- 52:04I'm not gonna say him bad about him.
- 52:05What's his name?
- 52:09Joe.
- 52:10Okay, Joe.
- 52:12On pitching, you know where it's going, but on pitching.
- 52:15I mean, like I said, I didn't know you were still alive, so
- 52:21you gotta be alive to be a living legend.
- 52:24Well, that's why I'm a living legend.
- 52:25I'm alive.
- 52:27That's what you read.
- 52:28The what over there says, I'm a living.
- 52:30I didn't make it up.
- 52:31All of a sudden, NASCO calls me up and says, I said, what?
- 52:33I never in Nasco in my life.
- 52:35He says, you're a living legend.
- 52:36So you're going in, you, you've been all over the country, know we had two choices.
- 52:40Living or dead.
- 52:41Who's your PR person?
- 52:42Nobody.
- 52:43I don't know who.
- 52:44I know who it was.
- 52:45I dunno how they got your name.
- 52:46Well, I knew a few guys in nascar.
- 52:48They knew of me, I guess.
- 52:49I guess.
- 52:50I don't know.
- 52:50They had some, but all I know is I was so surprised.
- 52:53I called Maya and I said, you have anything to do with, no, I didn't
- 52:55have anything to do with this.
- 52:56And he said, well, I said, and then I get the book and in the book there.
- 53:00Now listen to, in the book, Ernie Saxon about 10 years ago, was a living legend.
- 53:04He's in as a writer and Mario and was in there from back in the day
- 53:07when he was the world champion.
- 53:09So he, he's in there too.
- 53:10So I guess.
- 53:11Maybe they ask guys, Hey, who do you know?
- 53:13They wanna be a legend, so whatever.
- 53:14Somebody was good to me.
- 53:15Whatever.
- 53:16I have a legend shirt.
- 53:18We don't wanna go there.
- 53:18I know.
- 53:19Well, I was gonna take it off, but the legend shirts, we see it.
- 53:22Did we see it?
- 53:23Hold it.
- 53:26You had to do that, didn't you?
- 53:30Don't take two of them.
- 53:32What the hell are you doing?
- 53:37Hold the black one down.
- 53:38Hold the black one.
- 53:42Oh my God.
- 53:43He needs help.
- 53:45He does need help.
- 53:46This is the one Daytona gave me, but it had only stock cars on it.
- 53:49NASCAR's stuff.
- 53:50Oh, I didn't know you drove stock cars.
- 53:52I did.
- 53:53I I wanna erase it.
- 53:54Uh, AllBridge.
- 53:55And that's one of those pictures you got in that book Shows me the stock car.
- 53:58I cut that picture out now.
- 54:01It's in there.
- 54:01I saw it in there.
- 54:02That's the one I took out the other day.
- 54:03I've never made the stock car.
- 54:0626 Ford at I won the race center and the planet all put it back down.
- 54:11Who sponsors your underwear?
- 54:12I don't wear.
- 54:15Oh, thanks for telling me.
- 54:18We needed to know that.
- 54:20I'm ready for action all the time.
- 54:27What else do you have to tell us?
- 54:29How about the Pauls jack?
- 54:30Whoa.
- 54:30The Pul adjust.
- 54:31Yeah.
- 54:32Yeah.
- 54:32When I was in the hospital with my one arm, he came to Indianapolis.
- 54:35He always went to Indianapolis and he said to me, do you want to go back racing?
- 54:39I said, sure, I'd love to go back.
- 54:40He said, well, I got a tq.
- 54:41It's for him, tall ones in the country.
- 54:43And he said, uh, would like you to drive, give you a shot?
- 54:46I said, okay.
- 54:47So I got outta the hospital and get married.
- 54:49Matter of fact, we getting married, my, my head wasn't
- 54:51right for about a year, married
- 54:56a year.
- 54:59So you, crap, you got a big.
- 55:04So about six months after I get outta the hospital, I get married November
- 55:087th and my head didn't clear till about April of March of the next year.
- 55:12So every once in a while, you know you have family arguments with either wife.
- 55:15I said to her, you know, I get in a no and I said my head wasn't right then
- 55:18you shit at me, you still isn't right.
- 55:20They all laugh, go to bed.
- 55:22You happy with each other, but.
- 55:23That really happened.
- 55:24That really is one of the things that happened.
- 55:25I got married when my head in my head was still in a circle, and you know what?
- 55:28My wife disappeared.
- 55:30She died 17 years ago.
- 55:32I'm trying to get up there, but she doesn't want me.
- 55:33They said, you don't want me up here.
- 55:35You wanna keep me down here on earth, bother everybody.
- 55:38But I, I told my goal is to be a hundred years old now at Paxton,
- 55:41and I told Ton how I get there.
- 55:43I take 32 vitamins a day.
- 55:45Six of 'em I took at Pax House this morning.
- 55:47First thing I had, his wife made me a bowl of cereal.
- 55:50I took my six vitamin pills in the afternoon.
- 55:52I have a bottle of Boost, which is B-O-O-S-T.
- 55:55Got 27 vitamins in that.
- 55:56I've been taking that for like 30 years and that's why I'm in
- 55:59good shape and do everything.
- 56:00I play bce.
- 56:01As long as you stay alive till 5 55 tomorrow afternoon when
- 56:04I put you in the airplane.
- 56:05That's all I,
- 56:10so I recommend that Boost.
- 56:11I don't get any money for that.
- 56:12Boost is great Liquid drink.
- 56:14It is a, you've probably seen it on the market.
- 56:16It's the most popular nutrition drink on the market.
- 56:19That's why it sells out.
- 56:20The minute it goes into Walmart or anybody sells it, sell sells out immediately.
- 56:23So anyway, June came the following year.
- 56:26I got in the car playing Pleasant Pleasantville Racetrack.
- 56:29I won the heat, the semi in the feature, and my first racetrack.
- 56:32I went arm and I had the hook that night to put the hook around.
- 56:35You know, I, I used this spinning knob like, you're buying a stove for 25 cents.
- 56:39And I put my hook around there and I put elastic band around
- 56:41the hook to keep it closed.
- 56:43You went on a bumpy track, your own asphalt.
- 56:45So I won the race and you know who I passed in the last lap to the league.
- 56:48Hank Rogers, Jr. Was his first race.
- 56:51He was served that kind of four years.
- 56:53It was his first year back and he got in Lenny Boyd's car.
- 56:56He was running, leading the race.
- 56:57And of course I beat him.
- 56:58And of course I didn't really know him till after the race.
- 57:01But then as time went on.
- 57:02He was the one that got me a ride to be a teammate with him, to Midt.
- 57:06And I also took the, even though he took my father's ride, he said,
- 57:09I want you to be my teammate.
- 57:10He said, great Hank's father.
- 57:12Did he send you Christmas cards?
- 57:13No, he never sent me anything.
- 57:14Oh, okay.
- 57:15Thank you.
- 57:17Race drivers usually don't send Christmas cards to each other.
- 57:20Oh, that's a dig.
- 57:21In other words, uh, in Indian interviews when we talk about it,
- 57:25we kidding around with a driver.
- 57:26We say, well, he doesn't send me Christmas cards anyway.
- 57:29You know, that's the thing of I'm not gonna send you a Christmas card.
- 57:32Or they're the thing, you know what?
- 57:33They used to write about me when I was going to the USC championship.
- 57:35Yeah.
- 57:36They used to say, we're gotta send McGuire Christmas cards in August
- 57:39because he's not gonna be here.
- 57:40The way I used to drive, I mean that's the way it was.
- 57:42I just was one of 'em guys to get my foot to the floor.
- 57:45You see in all these young guys, they drive crazy and hard and
- 57:48you know you wanna run and look at the young guys that went in.
- 57:50That's the way it works.
- 57:51You gotta move guys.
- 57:52Order, get out of the way.
- 57:53That's the way it is and that's the way I was.
- 57:55But I was young.
- 57:56I wanted to go fast and after about 15 times on my head,
- 57:59I slowed down a little bit.
- 58:00What happened when you fell off the bicycle?
- 58:03Oh, that's another crash.
- 58:04I forgot I had another foot when I come down here.
- 58:07Now listen to this.
- 58:08This is something I come down here, I get in this over 55 group down here, right?
- 58:13I arrived the first Senate.
- 58:14And when they had trivia night, right?
- 58:17I go in the hall and I see a tape, all these guys sitting with yellow
- 58:19shirts at the table and they, they says, easy ride around 'em.
- 58:22I said, this must be a motorcycle crew.
- 58:24So I said, do you have, can I sit in this chair?
- 58:26I went, yeah, sit down there.
- 58:27So I sit down there, I passed that night.
- 58:29The next week comes over and I ride at the table.
- 58:32Now I'm friendly with these guys.
- 58:33I said, listen, uh, what kind of bikes do you guys ride?
- 58:36He said, motorcycles.
- 58:37He said, we don't ride motorcycles, we ride bikes.
- 58:40Oh.
- 58:41So I said, well, can I join the club?
- 58:42Yeah.
- 58:43Trouble is I can't ride a bike.
- 58:44I fell about five or six years before Riz.
- 58:47You couldn't drive race car.
- 58:48But that didn't stop.
- 58:48Well, they said, I, what happened is I fell, I fell in my driveway and hit
- 58:52my head, and I got a bad concussion riding up with my two wheel bike.
- 58:56That was about five years before.
- 58:57So I said, well, I said, you got anything against the three wheeler?
- 59:00No.
- 59:00So I got a three, a nine speed, three wheeler, and I joined the club.
- 59:03And every, what we do is Monday, Wednesday and Friday we ride to a
- 59:07restaurant five or six miles one way.
- 59:09And then we ride home and we do about 10 miles a day every other day.
- 59:12So I joined the bike club.
- 59:13That's what I do.
- 59:14I, it's part of my exercise.
- 59:15About three or four months after the three wheeler, we have a rule in the club.
- 59:19Stay six foot apart for each.
- 59:21Don't ride vania.
- 59:22This one guy wanted to talk to me racing.
- 59:24So he pulls up beside me, right?
- 59:26And he's got a regular two wheel brake.
- 59:27My bike is wide.
- 59:28The three wheeler, if anybody rides it, his handlebar hits my handlebar.
- 59:32He calls my wheeler, go in, I flip in over in, oh, crash.
- 59:35I'm unconscious for half hour, right in front of one of the developments.
- 59:39They call the ambulance.
- 59:40I wake up, I'm in the ambulance.
- 59:41Where the hell are we going?
- 59:42He says, you had a crash on the bike.
- 59:43What?
- 59:44Three weeks in the Holmes Hospital in in Melbourne for three weeks getting
- 59:48rehabilitated for a concussion.
- 59:50I broke three ribs on my left side.
- 59:52I got my side all scraped up.
- 59:53I had a helmet on, but you know that one of those cheap helmets
- 59:56from Walmart, it cracked.
- 59:58I got a inch and a half cash in my head.
- 1:00:00I had four stitches in my head.
- 1:00:02Anyway, I spent three, three weeks in the hospital and I got out and uh, I was okay.
- 1:00:06And here I am, crashed on a bike.
- 1:00:08Can you imagine that three wheel bike?
- 1:00:10What's next?
- 1:00:11Nothing.
- 1:00:11I, I still ride the bike, but what I did is all the guys had
- 1:00:16these regular bike helmets.
- 1:00:17You see 'em, it's just a flat thing, top of your head.
- 1:00:19And they all wear that, but they didn't have a crack.
- 1:00:21When I crashed, I did it.
- 1:00:22I split my head wide open.
- 1:00:23So you know what I did?
- 1:00:24I bought another helmet.
- 1:00:25I bought a full racing helmet.
- 1:00:27So when we're all riding, I get the full racing helmet completely closed,
- 1:00:32and they say, what you got?
- 1:00:33I said, I'm riding with this.
- 1:00:34So everybody's got the regular bike hats and I got a regular full helmet
- 1:00:38with flames on and everything else.
- 1:00:40And so I looked a little out of place.
- 1:00:41I'm riding with him, but that's what I'm gonna ride with.
- 1:00:43I told Lynn one time after you gave him your arm, I said, I'll give
- 1:00:47you a helmet and a uniform, but you ain't getting an arm from me.
- 1:00:51Okay, so yours is the only one in here.
- 1:00:54That's right.
- 1:00:54I'm telling you interesting.
- 1:00:55I may not be millionaire like Mario, but uh, I do.
- 1:00:58Okay.
- 1:00:59Done a lot.
- 1:00:59Other accomplishments, I guess, you know, I got a lot of friends in racing.
- 1:01:02A lot of people have been good to me.
- 1:01:04Like here, even though I get busted once in a while, guys
- 1:01:06like Len and, and uh, bill Wentz.
- 1:01:08But it is all part of the game.
- 1:01:09It's all like race drivers.
- 1:01:11We all exaggerate a little bit.
- 1:01:12Yeah.
- 1:01:13We've heard everything else.
- 1:01:14How's your level?
- 1:01:15Well, I was, I was very good, you know.
- 1:01:19How far are you going with it?
- 1:01:20We've been in the movies a couple of times together and she's 82, 81 years old.
- 1:01:24I'm 83.
- 1:01:25So the guys in the club say, 'cause she's at the apartment next door.
- 1:01:28She put a door from your apartment.
- 1:01:30Her, the condo says, she said wouldn't approve that.
- 1:01:32But we're all the same age.
- 1:01:34The oldest guy in my club, and he plays bocce.
- 1:01:37He's 97 years old.
- 1:01:38The second oldest is 95, third oldest is 92.
- 1:01:41And they play bocce.
- 1:01:42You know, we have to hand him the blow, you know, and they can't pick it up.
- 1:01:45You know, we're all full of pep and we do the things and I ride a bike and we swim.
- 1:01:49I swim six lap.
- 1:01:50Every other day and 'cause I hate to be outdone and when I see somebody
- 1:01:53older than me doing it, do it.
- 1:01:54You have any accidents with a bocce ball?
- 1:01:56No.
- 1:01:56Nobody threw at you?
- 1:01:58No, not yet.
- 1:01:58I dropped it on my foot times coming, I dropped it on my foot
- 1:02:01a couple of times, but, uh, yeah.
- 1:02:04Do you wear, do you wear your helmet to play bocce?
- 1:02:06None.
- 1:02:09Only when I ride the bike.
- 1:02:11I'm glad I asked that last question there a red line, 7,000 movie.
- 1:02:16Did you hear that question?
- 1:02:17Were you in a red line?
- 1:02:187,000 movie?
- 1:02:19There was a one arm driver in that movie.
- 1:02:21Oh.
- 1:02:22Hm.
- 1:02:23I thought it was, I thought she did a movie.
- 1:02:25Didn't you do excerpts for a movie?
- 1:02:27Well, I did a, yeah, I did a movie talking to the microphone.
- 1:02:30That's did, I did a movie, but I didn't to drive race car.
- 1:02:32Was that a movie with a race guy?
- 1:02:34It was a one arm driver.
- 1:02:36I, I did, made a movie, it's called Baren Wolf Game on Trips, the
- 1:02:39worst movie that was ever made.
- 1:02:40And they hired me to be a, a stunt driver.
- 1:02:43Lou Timon asked me, he was a radio announcer and the weatherman, they knew
- 1:02:48he was a race driver, so they needed stunt drivers to make this movie.
- 1:02:51So he called me as a stunt driver, and me and him were gonna be doing
- 1:02:54crazy things in race, in cars, regular cars called race and stuff like that.
- 1:02:59But then when they, when I appeared on set, the guy says
- 1:03:02to me, man, you could be a sto.
- 1:03:04See they had two stooges, STO number one and STO number two.
- 1:03:08And I was stu number one in the movie.
- 1:03:10That was my nanny.
- 1:03:12What we did is you were number one and two both.
- 1:03:15And when I, when I did the stunts, I had to wear a beard because they
- 1:03:19didn't want me to look the same.
- 1:03:20So I did a couple stunts wearing a beard.
- 1:03:22When I did in the movie, they had me go to a hairdresser,
- 1:03:24so they made hair all curly.
- 1:03:26They curled me hair up to look battalion and they gave me a suit and they made
- 1:03:29me hook 12 inches in diameter and put a little, and then they put a thing on the
- 1:03:33steering wheel and I drove a Cadillac.
- 1:03:35We did crazy things on the road crashing here and there.
- 1:03:38One of the things these I did was my boss was a gangster and he had lent
- 1:03:42money to this guy to make a movie and he couldn't pay my boss back.
- 1:03:46So we had to go after him.
- 1:03:47And that's what the theme of the survey was, trying to
- 1:03:48get the money from this guy.
- 1:03:50All the movies were made at night.
- 1:03:51We went to Brooklyn, right?
- 1:03:52We went to the Brooklyn Bridge and I got the guy and we want that
- 1:03:55money so he wouldn't pay the money.
- 1:03:56So what we did is we took the hook, pushed him off, and we hung him
- 1:04:00down with a rope on the Roosevelt Parkway and he's traffic's going,
- 1:04:03mine, he's hanging by this rope.
- 1:04:05That was one scene.
- 1:04:06Pull him back up.
- 1:04:07And through the whole movie, we're trying to catch this guy to get the money.
- 1:04:11Catch this guy.
- 1:04:12It finally ended this way.
- 1:04:13We're in Little Italy, right?
- 1:04:15And we're at the counter like this, and I'm in the counter.
- 1:04:17You see my hook and my boss is sitting at the table with this guy.
- 1:04:20So this guy, the bad guy, the good guy, and he's starting to get the,
- 1:04:24he takes a fork and he sticks it in.
- 1:04:26My boss's throat was sitting at the table in an Italian
- 1:04:29restaurant, and we had seven.
- 1:04:30We did this seven times.
- 1:04:32Every time he sucked the thing and bud would come all over the white jacket.
- 1:04:35But what the scene was, you saw the arm going forward, back in the
- 1:04:39studio, they had a guy there with a fake throat sticking the fork in it.
- 1:04:44Bud skirt all over his jacket.
- 1:04:46So every time you did seen about seven scenes, they did the actual
- 1:04:50bleeding in the uh, studio.
- 1:04:53So you thought this guy was getting the throat stuck in him.
- 1:04:55So when this happened.
- 1:04:56The guy runs out.
- 1:04:57I run out after him and I get in the Cadillac, he gets in, he gets
- 1:05:00in a sports car and I'm chasing him down the highway, right?
- 1:05:03This is the way the movie ended.
- 1:05:05He lock some drink spin around, hits towards me, right?
- 1:05:08I, the last thing you see in the movie is me going, oh shit.
- 1:05:11He hits head on.
- 1:05:12There's a big sport, big explosion in the movie.
- 1:05:16We both, we all get killed in the movie The boss is dead for, but I
- 1:05:20get killed from the head on collision and the last thing you see is me
- 1:05:23saying, oh shit, big explosion.
- 1:05:26It was a canned explosion.
- 1:05:27Fire goes up like this.
- 1:05:29Then the curtain score across the screen, that movie couldn't sell.
- 1:05:32It didn't sell.
- 1:05:33So it went on private star and you know who was in the movie with us?
- 1:05:37She was the mama Do, no, we don't wanna know.
- 1:05:39Joan Ell was the star.
- 1:05:41She was a mama do.
- 1:05:42And she ran Ahoe house.
- 1:05:44This what.
- 1:05:48House.
- 1:05:48House would refused.
- 1:05:50And the hero was one.
- 1:05:51She, he went there all the time.
- 1:05:53So that's where went, she's in the movie running, doing something.
- 1:05:56I wasn't even in that scene, but she was in the movie and a lot of other stars
- 1:06:00were in the movie who made the movie.
- 1:06:02So the guys who made Shaft one, two, and three, they made this movie.
- 1:06:06So anyway, how long, how long was that movie?
- 1:06:09It lasted about an hour.
- 1:06:10I, it was horrible.
- 1:06:11It was a horrible, when I saw the whole movie, you even, and they showed it,
- 1:06:15one of the guys from the Retirement Village I in, they found it on the, it's
- 1:06:20on the, if you look on the Joan but ELs movie, it's called Going to Netflix.
- 1:06:24It's on the Barn.
- 1:06:25Wolf one came, he found it and showed it at the clubhouse.
- 1:06:28It was horrible.
- 1:06:29We all laughed like hell at it.
- 1:06:31And they showed it at the Clubhouse in Florida and horrible.
- 1:06:33But you can get it if you go on Netflix.
- 1:06:36And go under Joan Mantel's movies and read down a credits when you
- 1:06:39get Tover and Wolf Main trips.
- 1:06:41I'm in that movie and, and you went to the Academy Awards?
- 1:06:44No, no.
- 1:06:46It's a horror movie, but I made $3,500 because I had to join the Actors Guild.
- 1:06:52As long as you show up in the city, you get paid.
- 1:06:54I made 3,500 bucks for three weeks work, so I didn't laugh at that.
- 1:06:58So I had a lot of, a lot of memories in here.
- 1:07:00Somebody told me, my lawyer told me, they said, you know, we should write a book.
- 1:07:03We probably make a few bucks.
- 1:07:04I said.
- 1:07:05Well, why don't we wait till I'm a hundred years old?
- 1:07:06Because I mean, there might be a lot of things happening.
- 1:07:08You know how when you write a book, you sit down in a column with a
- 1:07:11writer and he pulls things outta you?
- 1:07:13Well, if you're gonna write with your right hand, I'm quitting right now.
- 1:07:19You know?
- 1:07:19That's how writers sue.
- 1:07:20They sit down with the, with the victim or whoever you are, and
- 1:07:23they pull things outta you, and you say, yeah, that's right too.
- 1:07:26I did that.
- 1:07:26I forgot that.
- 1:07:27And they read about your scrapbook and they say, what about, look, I've
- 1:07:30had a scrapbook for what, 60 years.
- 1:07:32There's a lot of things in there.
- 1:07:33I'm gonna sit, I've won 52 races, I only remember about 30.
- 1:07:36Who knows how many races I could have won, but I'm happy I'm alive.
- 1:07:39I had a lot of fun.
- 1:07:40I'm remembered I'm in Hall of Fame here and there and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:07:43And here I am here.
- 1:07:44But I, I gotta read the, read about it.
- 1:07:46I say, oh geez, I wanna race there.
- 1:07:47I wanna race there.
- 1:07:48And I gave a lot of my trophies away.
- 1:07:49I got about maybe down in Florida, I got about 20 trophies.
- 1:07:52The big ones I got, I gave some to my father, my brother,
- 1:07:55you know, when I was single.
- 1:07:56Like the guy I stayed with for two years in Jersey, when I went to
- 1:07:59race, I always gave him the trophies.
- 1:08:01I was staying at his house, you know?
- 1:08:02So I just looked him there.
- 1:08:04When you left Jersey to move to Florida, did you dig up all those
- 1:08:07cans in the yard with money in them?
- 1:08:09Yeah.
- 1:08:09I dig those.
- 1:08:10I thought you would I dig all those.
- 1:08:11That's how I, that's how I paid cash for everything.
- 1:08:13I went to Florida.
- 1:08:14There you go.
- 1:08:15You all had cash.
- 1:08:16I said, wow.
- 1:08:16What I did, I had four, two cars and I used to park my
- 1:08:19antique cos in the backyard.
- 1:08:21And my money was all, I was a ground guy.
- 1:08:23I put everything, I didn't put anything in the bank or stocks or anything else.
- 1:08:25I put all my money in the ground.
- 1:08:27I used to tell the guys this.
- 1:08:28I had a metal plate.
- 1:08:29I parked the antique pedal with the metal plate and, and the guys wouldn't believe
- 1:08:32me, the guys I backed all the cars, that one, they lifted the metal plates up.
- 1:08:36One hit twenties and one hit tens and one hit fifties in and they
- 1:08:39were all filled up with money and I didn't know how much was in there.
- 1:08:41Finally, when I came to Florida, took on all and the guys believed me and they
- 1:08:44didn't believe me when they said, wow.
- 1:08:46So all my antique cars, I parked a car on top of 'em.
- 1:08:49They had to steal the antique car to get the money, but everybody knew that.
- 1:08:52But nobody did anything.
- 1:08:53'cause see, I knew all the crooks in town.
- 1:08:55That was the secret.
- 1:08:56Hey, I don't want you to let all your nuggets out.
- 1:08:59Now save some of them.
- 1:09:00You don't see pizza very often, but there it is.
- 1:09:03The only reason I come up here is to look at this.
- 1:09:05It pretty spies me when I come up here.
- 1:09:07Thank you all.
