- 0:00In the mid 90s a phone company gets a hold of you because they
- 0:04want to see if their GPS works. Tell the story about when you
- 0:10went to Talladega. That's pretty correct what you
- 0:13just said, but but Winston went away.
- 0:17OK. And Nextel was the new sponsor
- 0:20for NASCAR. Phone the phone guys.
- 0:23Nextel. OK, That was a new sponsor.
- 0:25So I get a phone call about six months into the new contract
- 0:29that we're racing about six months into the year now with
- 0:31the Nextel Cup series. OK.
- 0:34And they said we want to start broadcasting the drivers
- 0:38communications to a tower. Then from the tower down to the
- 0:41the all the fans of the grandstands, we want you to
- 0:45drive around the racetrack above 200 mph to prove that the
- 0:49signals can transfer back and forth quick enough to do that
- 0:53correctly. And I said, OK.
- 0:56And back then, you got to remember the cars were running
- 0:57like 192 miles an hour. That's all.
- 0:59They had to run it with a restrictor plate.
- 1:01OK, so that's OK. Well, they asked me if I would
- 1:04do it. I said, yeah, we'll do it.
- 1:06So they asked Team Penske if they would.
- 1:07So at that time, I don't want to belabor the point, but when big
- 1:12companies like that or NASCAR or automotive tests, you know, the
- 1:17Ford test, what what make were you running at that time do?
- 1:20You remember? Does that mean it was a?
- 1:22It was a. Ford, OK, so whether it's Chevy
- 1:24White Sport, you got to feel full of pride.
- 1:28Ford big sponsor coming in, they want you to do it.
- 1:31You didn't. You didn't shy away from it.
- 1:33Well, I don't know if that's full of pride or not.
- 1:35It was just a question they came across.
- 1:37I mean, all the drivers were getting requests from everybody
- 1:40to do different things. I just happened to get a request
- 1:42from Team Penske. Got a request?
- 1:44I guess what it means you didn't say no, I don't want to do that.
- 1:47Oh, no, I mean, I wanted to do it.
- 1:48I said, OK, it's it, it, it was a simple test, too.
- 1:51Yeah, 'cause you know, I took the truck driver myself and Earl
- 1:55Barben. That's it.
- 1:58Three of. You three of us, Team Penske
- 2:00prepared the car to put her on the truck and blew us down
- 2:03there. Being Earl jumped on my
- 2:04airplane, we flew down there, we fired that thing up, warmed it
- 2:07up. Earl Barbin, Jenny Johnson.
- 2:10Spider is from Saint Louis, So Earl.
- 2:13Earl, Yeah. Well Earl Barbin, Earl was my
- 2:15sponsor my whole career and then when I retired at the end of
- 2:192005, he went for went to work for Jimmy Johnson and went on to
- 2:23be his sponsor for his 7 championships.
- 2:26OK. OK, so you 3 go down there.
- 2:28Oh, yeah. I mean, me and Earl were tight.
- 2:31A real thing. We still are, Yeah.
- 2:33And so those guys said, OK, go on down there and do it.
- 2:36And so we send the truck driver down there with the car.
- 2:39We get, we fly the plane down, we get out.
- 2:41We ended helping the truck, we unload the car.
- 2:43We fired up and warmed up and plugged the oil in and get it
- 2:45all done. It's garbage.
- 2:47I mean, to drive around Talladaga in 190 mile an hour is
- 2:49pretty easy, OK? It really is.
- 2:51But because we have restricted place, all they wanted us to do
- 2:56is run four or five laps above 200 mile an hour.
- 2:58Yeah, 2 right at 200 or above. So we fire the thing up.
- 3:02I go out there and run up. I run.
- 3:04Know what I run? I run 194 miles an hour.
- 3:07You come in and put a different restrict plate on.
- 3:10Car runs 199.8. So OK.
- 3:14And so we got to go faster. We got to go over 200.
- 3:16Is it OK? Put another restrict non nastars
- 3:18there and Buster Auten and a couple other guys there.
- 3:22So they come do me some men. You're not going to believe
- 3:24this. That's what's wrong.
- 3:25We screwed up and left the Dong lawn restrictor plates back in
- 3:28Hickory, NC. We don't have a bigger
- 3:31restrictor plate, so the only restrictor plate they had to
- 3:35carbon run 199 eight. This is what This is why we're
- 3:39doing this, because yeah, we're trying to figure out the next
- 3:43thing you're going to say, don't restrictor plates.
- 3:45So it was redneck as it was. That's what happened.
- 3:48We just forgot the rest. Restrictor plates and make it go
- 3:50a little faster maybe over me two O one or two O 2.
- 3:54So as we don't have it as we'll just take the damn thing off
- 3:57take the restrictor plate clear off and it went all rusty.
- 3:59We don't hope we can do that. I say come on look you're it's
- 4:02there's nobody around. We're not testing, we're not
- 4:04competing. Let's just get this test done
- 4:06for these guys, OK yeah. They took out restrictor plate
- 4:09off. I went out there and I thought I
- 4:13was in second gear leaving the pits instead of being in 3rd
- 4:17gear. So I downshifted a car as a this
- 4:21thing's in 3rd gear and it's screaming.
- 4:23It's turning. I mean, it's wound up.
- 4:26Pull that baby back in high gear.
- 4:27I come ripping down the back straightaway.
- 4:29I come down the front straightaway.
- 4:32I come down the front straightaway. 221 miles an hour.
- 4:36Were you up scared? Getting up to speed?
- 4:38No, I knew I was really flying. I come back around, that damn
- 4:44thing come off at turn 3, it goes down the front straightaway
- 4:47at the start finish line it goes into complete hydroplane mode.
- 4:52I got the front wheels turn and the friends got lift in it and
- 4:55it slid from the bottom of the track all the way up to the wall
- 4:59and nothing crossed the damn spark figure sign at 242 miles
- 5:03an hour. Oh.
- 5:04My gosh, I come in, I come in. I said Oh my God I can't drive
- 5:09this thing. So Earl, I put 2 spring rubbers
- 5:12in the back of the rear springs. A jacked ass on her car up.
- 5:15Then we took the front fenders. We pulled the fenders out like
- 5:183/4 of an inch on each side to get some downforce back to the
- 5:20front end. We bolted 4 tires on that thing.
- 5:24I went back out, blew around here one more lap at run 234
- 5:29then it run 241 and I felt the vibration and I throttle back at
- 5:34241 mile and come down and in two laps it ripped all the
- 5:39rubber off the right front tire. It was going that damn fast that
- 5:42it ripped the rubber off the tires.
- 5:44So this is what everybody wants to know.
- 5:48And, and OK, that's an unbelievable story.
- 5:50I cannot add to that. But we always heard of of, you
- 5:54know, Dale Senior, you know, the man of black.
- 5:57Take your restrictor plates off, drop the rag.
- 6:00You just explained why that was impossible.
- 6:03Yeah, the cars are aerodynamically unstable to run
- 6:05that speed. Let's put it this way.
- 6:08That era of car. That era of car.
- 6:11Yeah. Would you?
- 6:12No way you could do that. Yeah, that car, 200 mile per
- 6:17hour was his Max to be aerodynamically stay
- 6:19aerodynamically stable. I proved that.
- 6:22Yeah. I mean, I couldn't even turn the
- 6:23wheel. Those goes so damn fast.
- 6:25It was lifting. The front end and in two laps
- 6:27that you're saying the tires. Were gone.
- 6:29Ripped the tires off. It ripped the rubber off the
- 6:31tires. Yeah, and Goodyear probably
- 6:35couldn't make a tire, and if they did, it have to be built
- 6:37like a truck. There'd be a lot, and there's no
- 6:40reason. OK, let's change the subject a
- 6:42little bit. If we're putting on a show at
- 6:44200 mile an hour, why do we need to go 240 or 220?
- 6:47Well, you. The fan really can't tell that.
- 6:50Yeah, I mean, yeah, you're right.
- 6:52You don't need to go that speed, you know.
- 6:53To put her on a. Good race.
- 6:54I absolutely proved to myself that day I came in off the
- 6:57track. I my first got the windows are
- 6:59all look at Earl. So you know what?
- 7:01Now you know and now I know why you can't race these things over
- 7:05200 miles an hour because it's a stock car.
- 7:07It's not designed to be around 40 other cars swap, swarping all
- 7:12over the place. I realized that we couldn't run
- 7:14that speed, but we did it. So we proved it.
- 7:16And I think I, well, I, I know we were probably one of the
- 7:19fastest stock cars in the planet still to this day.
- 7:22Yeah, so there's a lot of documentaries out there, people
- 7:26voicing over, giving their opinion, but now we know the
- 7:29details. 3 of you Penske Racing just says go on down or do what
- 7:35they need. You get down there, it's three
- 7:38of you now. You, you don't have a restrictor
- 7:41plate. Now this story just keeps
- 7:42building and building. And before you know it, you you
- 7:47realize that at what point let's end it like this?
- 7:52Was it a day later was an hour later?
- 7:54When did you realize that this story has become, I mean, today
- 8:00the story still lives on. Did you realize it was as big as
- 8:04a story as it? Was well, that that day when we
- 8:07left, I really felt like we did something that was miraculous
- 8:10that it did. We accidentally backed into,
- 8:13yeah, we didn't know we're going to do that.
- 8:15And it happened, You know, I remember Earl going back going,
- 8:17Oh, my God. And me going back going, Oh, my
- 8:19God. Yeah.
- 8:20And like, wow, we just can't just.
- 8:22And Team Penske and Don Miller and the guys just set us down to
- 8:26the skeleton crew, you know, and you do that.
- 8:28We knocked that out and we loaded up and come home, You
- 8:30know, I said, dude, you're not gonna believe there's something.
- 8:32Right? 242 mile an hour.
- 8:34Yeah. And back then, those cars were
- 8:35making about 750 horsepower. Yeah.
- 8:38Man, at the end of 05, before they wanted all these new rules
- 8:41stuff, our NASCAR motors were making about 950.
- 8:44Wow. I mean, my.
- 8:45Well, a lot of power. My qualifying motive for the
- 8:47Coke 600 was 950 horsepower ice cream and turn to think 10,300
- 8:51RPM. That's another story, the inside
- 8:54of that motor, and that will be down the road.
- 8:57That's way down the road. That's way down the road.
- 8:58But now as we end this, we realize how many great stories
- 9:03are these. These are Rusty Wallace stories,
- 9:06but these are also moments in the sport that changed the
- 9:09sport.
