- 1:33Speaker 1: So we've got that going on for us. And next
- 1:36Speaker 1: week we are doing what did I do with that?
- 1:43Speaker 1: We are doing a book by Tom Doyle called Ringo,
- 1:47Speaker 1: a fab life biography of the Beatles drummer, who I
- 1:53Speaker 1: believe is about eighty four right now. I think, give
- 1:58Speaker 1: or take, he's got a birthday coming up in July.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Maybe I saw he's gonna be eighty six. What is
- 2:05Speaker 1: he eighty five? Gonna be eighty six in July? Okay,
- 2:11Speaker 1: We've got a Mallorie for you, and I think you're
- 2:16Speaker 1: going to enjoy it. We're going to jump out to
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Player's fun center phone line right now with Mallory,
- 2:23Speaker 1: who's here a little bit early. But we have Aggie
- 2:27Speaker 1: Baseball coming up here in a little bit. But Mallori,
- 2:31Speaker 1: since we have talked, we should today be talking about
- 2:38Speaker 1: the first episode of The Bachelorette, which should have run
- 2:44Speaker 1: on Sunday, and now we are not talking about the
- 2:52Speaker 1: first episode of The Bachelorette because they canceled the whole
- 2:57Speaker 1: dang season.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Oh man, all those potential careers, I mean love, all that.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Love, all the love and the stuff. It's gone. Well, see,
- 3:10Speaker 1: new stuff just keeps coming out, which I think is
- 3:13Speaker 1: one of the main reasons they canceled. Okay, Newly released
- 3:18Speaker 1: bodycam footage obtained by TMZ from Taylor Frankie Paul's twenty
- 3:25Speaker 1: twenty three arrest reveals even more chaos from that fateful night,
- 3:32Speaker 1: including Dakota pleading with cops to take him to jail instead.
- 3:39Speaker 1: The video begins as officers arrive at Taylor's home in Utah,
- 3:43Speaker 1: where she and Dakota are already screaming at each other
- 3:47Speaker 1: before the police reached the front door, picking up where
- 3:51Speaker 1: the cell phone footage, which was previously been aired, had
- 3:55Speaker 1: left off. Taylor pled guilty to agriv assault was sentenced
- 4:02Speaker 1: to three years probation, which is scheduled to end in August.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Prosecutors dropped four other charges, including domestic violence in the
- 4:13Speaker 1: presence of a child, child abuse, and criminal mischief. So
- 4:21Speaker 1: there was stuff going on, but the probation ends in August.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I you know, I don't know no details about. Yes,
- 4:35Speaker 1: some producer has lost their job over this.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I feel like there was so many options from that
- 4:41Speaker 4: show too, and you picked her.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Well, of course, Disney had to release a
- 4:48Speaker 1: statement last week saying, in light of the newly released
- 4:53Speaker 1: video which just surfaced today and this was the cell
- 4:57Speaker 1: phone stuff, we made the decision not to move move
- 5:00Speaker 1: forward with the new season of the Bachelorette at this time.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And listen to this, I just knew Disney was such
- 5:09Speaker 1: a great corporation. Our focus is supporting the family. Oh
- 5:16Speaker 1: my gosh, can you ask for a better organization than that?
- 5:22Speaker 4: But I'm not gonna even I'm not sitting at any
- 5:25Speaker 4: hate towards the mouse because the mouse scares me.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Very very wise. It's like it's it's kind of like
- 5:35Speaker 1: going to war with Taylor. You may wake up dead
- 5:38Speaker 1: if you say anything against Disney.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Could you imagine those two going at each other?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Oh, that would be precious. I would pay for that.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I was like, we should have done a whole March
- 5:50Speaker 5: Madness bracket.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That would be awesome. You know you're not here, but
- 5:56Speaker 1: you you need a part of You need to be
- 5:58Speaker 1: part of our snack atology. Bracket.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Oh I love snacks. I'm really missing out.
- 6:03Speaker 1: You are, but but but because Reese's peanut butter cups
- 6:10Speaker 1: have dominated snacktology the last couple of years, they should, yes,
- 6:15Speaker 1: should well. Ted didn't even include them this year.
- 6:19Speaker 5: There are That's probably fair.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I say. If hey, if you're gonna have a dynasty,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you have a dynasty. You know that's the way.
- 6:28Speaker 5: This is what you should have done, or they should
- 6:31Speaker 5: have done.
- 6:31Speaker 4: They should have done the different types of res yescause
- 6:35Speaker 4: those eggs and the trees, those different candy cups, saying
- 6:40Speaker 4: or the or the pieces.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I'm telling you. He had snacks I've never heard of.
- 6:45Speaker 5: In this list, and that love a variety.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I think there was more more salty than sweet snacks.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And by the way, my my salty favorite I had
- 6:55Speaker 1: winning the whole thing. So we'll see how that works out.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'd rather not say yet.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Okay, got it. You don't want to jinx it.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Now, Let's wait on the games you're supposed to be
- 7:05Speaker 1: We're supposed to be back in the Sweet sixteen soon,
- 7:10Speaker 1: so with the snacks, so I'll wait on that. Maybe
- 7:12Speaker 1: by tomorrow.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I can't wait to hear I should see I really
- 7:16Speaker 4: need to get up to date on all the snacks.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yes, you do well. Like I said, I don't think
- 7:21Speaker 1: I knew about a third of them on this list
- 7:23Speaker 1: this year amazing. William Shatner, who is ninety five, took
- 7:30Speaker 1: to Twitter over the weekend like you do when you're
- 7:34Speaker 1: ninety five, to bemoan the news that the latest Star
- 7:41Speaker 1: Trek franchise series, Starfleet Academy, will end after the upcoming
- 7:48Speaker 1: second season. It's with sorrow that I hear about the
- 7:53Speaker 1: cancelation of the new Star Trek series, he wrote. Shatner
- 7:58Speaker 1: mocked critics who celebrated the show's cancelation because they claimed
- 8:04Speaker 1: it was woke. He argued the original Star Trek, which
- 8:09Speaker 1: famously featured an interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lieutenant
- 8:15Speaker 1: Uhura in the nineteen sixty eight episode. During the first
- 8:21Speaker 1: airing of My Straw Star Trek Kiss, where my Star
- 8:26Speaker 1: Trek series where a kiss was objectionable, many stations pulled
- 8:31Speaker 1: the episode to condemn the show. Using today's vernacular, it
- 8:35Speaker 1: would absolutely be called woke DEI because it went against
- 8:41Speaker 1: the norms of society. I have not watched the Starfleet Academy.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't know where it's streaming, I don't know where
- 8:52Speaker 1: it's available, so maybe that's why. Maybe that's part of
- 8:58Speaker 1: the issue. Don't get me wrong. I love me some
- 9:02Speaker 1: Captain Kirk and I love me some Star Trek. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: like I said, anybody who's tweeting at age ninety five,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you go, Bill, you go.
- 9:14Speaker 4: You know what's crazy too, is I never he never
- 9:17Speaker 4: looked his age to me like. He always looked right well,
- 9:19Speaker 4: which I'm sure he would appreciate that.
- 9:21Speaker 1: You know, he's got a good he's got really good
- 9:24Speaker 1: hair piece, an outstanding hair piece. And he said, yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 1: he's had some good work done.
- 9:32Speaker 5: If you make yourself more look more realistic to your age, yes,
- 9:35Speaker 5: it's usually pretty good work. It's when you try to yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 5: way too young.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I think you're right. I think you're right. He's done.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Okay, So if you're going to get any plastic surgery
- 9:45Speaker 4: or hair pieces, just like, be realistic.
- 9:47Speaker 5: You know.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yes, Yes, that's our advice for you today. I think
- 9:52Speaker 1: that's sound advice. Yes, you're welcome.
- 9:54Speaker 5: No, we had to give that good advice before I
- 9:55Speaker 5: start talking about Megan Markles.
- 9:57Speaker 1: What's happened with Meghan and.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Harry's production company is gearing up for a new sleeve.
- 10:03Speaker 1: No no, no, no, no, no no. I thought we were
- 10:09Speaker 1: done with this.
- 10:11Speaker 4: They're developing a mix of script no general projects currently
- 10:17Speaker 4: in the pipeline.
- 10:18Speaker 1: They just don't know when to quit, do they.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Oh, man, well, there is a mix of fiction and
- 10:24Speaker 4: non piction projects on the slate.
- 10:26Speaker 5: There is a natural truth. I'm sorry, are.
- 10:31Speaker 4: You tripping over my words because apparently, well we all know,
- 10:35Speaker 4: I can't read very well.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Anyways, as you worked through the stages of development.
- 10:40Speaker 4: But Archwell Productions will I thought Archwell Productions just failed.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I thought that was the name of it. I thought
- 10:46Speaker 1: that was the name of their son, Archwell Productions. Isn't
- 10:53Speaker 1: it Archie. Isn't that one of the kids Archie?
- 10:56Speaker 5: It is just Archie, or if it is Archwell, But
- 10:59Speaker 5: you never know.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Sure, people, Sure, we'll have programming across several streets.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Oh my god, haven't they listened to the public. The
- 11:08Speaker 1: public has said enough, we don't want what you've got,
- 11:12Speaker 1: get leave us alone. Remember when they were telling everybody
- 11:16Speaker 1: to leave them alone and going on every TV show
- 11:20Speaker 1: in the world saying, we just want our piece, please
- 11:24Speaker 1: leave us alone, And we're talking to every network.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Well, yeah, chip, but then they realize that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: No one w care, doesn't make the money and no
- 11:34Speaker 1: one cared, and no one cared.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Yeah you really want us to care? Go try to
- 11:39Speaker 5: be a royal again. See how that works.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Just sick about this whole thing.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 11:47Speaker 4: So if you care in the slightest or if you
- 11:50Speaker 4: want to hate watch, that will be coming soon.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not hate watching. So that you know
- 11:57Speaker 1: that the Hannah Montana twentieth in A three special is today, right, Yeah? Okay,
- 12:05Speaker 1: the actress who played opposite Miley as their best friend
- 12:09Speaker 1: Lily on the show. So that's awesome. What no, I
- 12:16Speaker 1: have no idea, ozmon Okay she she wasn't there saying
- 12:25Speaker 1: Hannah Montana changed my life. It gave me a lifelong
- 12:29Speaker 1: respect for the meetium of comedy. It taught me discipline, patience, timing,
- 12:33Speaker 1: and respect working in an adult space. So young. This
- 12:38Speaker 1: is from Instagram. She's on the set of George and Mandy.
- 12:44Speaker 1: She asked co star Montana Jordan if she'd ever heard
- 12:49Speaker 1: of Hannah Montana, who feigns ignorance on the Instagram piece.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Ozma captioned, I met thousands of him fans over the
- 12:58Speaker 1: years fans that now have children watching the show, and
- 13:02Speaker 1: fans that literally work beside me every day like Montana.
- 13:07Speaker 1: He has seen every episode. Don't be fooled. So anyway,
- 13:14Speaker 1: there there's nothing uh going on there except that Emily
- 13:19Speaker 1: just couldn't make the anniversary because you know she's making
- 13:26Speaker 1: George and first marriage. Yeah, she's only one of the
- 13:30Speaker 1: group that's actually worth working apparently.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Well you know whose sister that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Is, Haley Haley Joel Losman. No, No, I don't know.
- 13:44Speaker 4: But that's the kid who said I see dead people
- 13:47Speaker 4: Haley Joel.
- 13:56Speaker 1: No, it's not that person. It's that person in.
- 14:01Speaker 5: My brain that is not like.
- 14:03Speaker 1: No, you just wanted you just wanted me to be wrong,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and you know most of the time you would have
- 14:10Speaker 1: been right about me being wrong.
- 14:13Speaker 5: No, it's okay that I mean, I'm wrong a lot.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Don't give me literally, don't get me wrong.
- 14:19Speaker 4: But no, I just don't know why that name was
- 14:22Speaker 4: not what trigger than I'm like, no, I can't be it.
- 14:25Speaker 5: That's not right. No, you're right. Yep, look at that.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Good gosh.
- 14:29Speaker 5: I'm glad we can all learn something new today, myself.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Included write that down. Yes, don't care.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Okay again, Miley Sarus went back to her enda days yesterday,
- 14:44Speaker 4: as we just talked about celebrating the singer song for
- 14:48Speaker 4: the singer actress.
- 14:49Speaker 5: So there's that chip. She is a singer actress. Attended
- 14:52Speaker 5: the Star Senate event.
- 14:55Speaker 4: With most of her co stars, as we kind of
- 14:57Speaker 4: went over Jason Earles, Moses is uh, I don't know
- 15:03Speaker 4: who half these people are, honest, but anyways, all of
- 15:06Speaker 4: our X all of her cast members except for the
- 15:08Speaker 4: Emily girl.
- 15:09Speaker 5: We just so.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You didn't did you ever watch uh Hannah Montana.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Hannah Montana was I was like in high school? Yeah
- 15:22Speaker 5: point Yeah, it wasn't it, but I did babysit. Okay,
- 15:26Speaker 5: so kids, I know what Hannah Montana that.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Was very aware of big deal. Yeah yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Are you going to do your impersonation.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Of Miley it's Miley? Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 15:39Speaker 5: We had to do it.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:40Speaker 5: No, you're right the story you're expect you to start with.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Okay, you're right.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Anyways, let's let's move on.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Okay, move on.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Miley Cyrus or Joel Osmond or whatever anymore.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Okay, let's talk about Travis Scott. We haven't heard from
- 15:56Speaker 1: him in a while.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Age, where's he been well, no, but we're out too,
- 16:00Speaker 4: okay good. Recently he was at the stage of the
- 16:03Speaker 4: Passion Scholarship Funds eighty ninth gala on Monday.
- 16:07Speaker 5: So last yesterday.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Did the Cactus Jack because one on one program with
- 16:15Speaker 4: the fun awarding recipients ten thousand dollars each of in mentorship.
- 16:21Speaker 5: That's cool.
- 16:23Speaker 4: He appeared towards the end of the evening schedule to
- 16:25Speaker 4: congratulate the students in attendance.
- 16:28Speaker 5: He did create again the Cactus Jack.
- 16:31Speaker 6: A Brand has collaborated with or Fanetics, and Jordan Brand
- 16:37Speaker 6: admitted that even today I was going through so much,
- 16:39Speaker 6: but despite that, there's nothing that's going.
- 16:42Speaker 5: On to stop me from getting to see the future.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Good for him, So there's that for him. Yeah, how fun?
- 16:49Speaker 4: A fun little surprise from Travis Scott.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Do you know that his real name is Jacques Berman
- 16:59Speaker 1: Webster or the second.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I did read that, but I avoided it on
- 17:04Speaker 4: purpose because I knew I was.
- 17:06Speaker 1: That's quite the name.
- 17:09Speaker 5: It's very fancy sounding, very sophisticated.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm telling you, why didn't he go with Jacques Webster?
- 17:15Speaker 1: I like that better than Travis Scott. I don't know
- 17:18Speaker 1: where Travis Scott came from. I don't know, I don't know.
- 17:21Speaker 1: That will be that will be your homework. You can
- 17:23Speaker 1: tell us, tell us tomorrow where Travis Scott came from.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Let's see Barry Manilow. It is opening up about his
- 17:33Speaker 1: lung cancer diagnosis. In December, the eighty two year old
- 17:38Speaker 1: music icon revealed he had been diagnosed with lung cancer
- 17:41Speaker 1: was undergoing treatment. Now. In an exclusive People magazine cover story, Matteloe,
- 17:51Speaker 1: who just announced he will drop his thirty third studio
- 17:56Speaker 1: album June the fifth, is detailing his expence. You don't
- 18:01Speaker 1: even think about how fragile life is, and suddenly you
- 18:04Speaker 1: have lung cancer. But I'm still here. I'm not all here.
- 18:09Speaker 1: There's part of me that isn't here. They took part
- 18:11Speaker 1: of me, and now I've got to figure out what
- 18:14Speaker 1: do I do. If I hadn't gone and gotten an
- 18:21Speaker 1: MRI when my hips were bothering me, if I hadn't
- 18:27Speaker 1: have done that, it saved my life. There were no symptoms, symptoms,
- 18:32Speaker 1: nothing hurt. But they found a spot on my lung.
- 18:36Speaker 1: They called me and said could be cancer. I said, bleep,
- 18:41Speaker 1: you I don't have cancer. More tests, more tests said,
- 18:48Speaker 1: oh yes, you do. Four weeks later, Manelo checked into
- 18:53Speaker 1: the hospital to undergo a litlebectomy to remove the disease
- 18:58Speaker 1: part of the lung. Spent seven days and I see you,
- 19:04Speaker 1: he said, I'm one of the lucky ones. I don't
- 19:06Speaker 1: have to have chemo radiation and all that stuff. You go, barry,
- 19:14Speaker 1: you go.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Response, although, yeah, not the best.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Shut shut off if you have it. Yeah, what a
- 19:20Speaker 1: doctor says, could be cancer shut up.
- 19:24Speaker 4: So maybe the doctor was like, it's a different change
- 19:29Speaker 4: and response.
- 19:31Speaker 5: Something new. Oh gosh, well some sad more sad dudes.
- 19:36Speaker 5: O Bourne and Sid Wilson quietly hit the brake. No, no,
- 19:41Speaker 5: I apparently more than a month ago.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Wow, and we're just finding out about it.
- 19:46Speaker 4: And while they're not fully together now, the door may
- 19:49Speaker 4: not be fully shut. Yeah, apparently it happened a few
- 19:53Speaker 4: weeks ago, but it's only surfacing now. Kelly and Sid
- 19:56Speaker 4: have always had a bit of a hot and cold
- 19:58Speaker 4: dynamic and the pattern plate and to you know, where
- 20:01Speaker 4: things are right.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Now, so perfect, perfect for upcoming marriage exactly.
- 20:06Speaker 4: So, of course I'm sure what currently caused the split. However,
- 20:10Speaker 4: it's not like she's not going through an incredibly difficult year.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Her father did pass away morn in July, and he
- 20:17Speaker 4: did propose seven months ago, Okay, during Ozzie's final Black
- 20:23Speaker 4: Sabbath concerts, so kind of a big memorable thing.
- 20:27Speaker 5: But yeah, yeah, we'll see. I mean they've got their
- 20:30Speaker 5: you know.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I sure hope those kids can make it. Really, I
- 20:34Speaker 1: really hope those crazy kids can make it.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Maybe.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Okay, let's let's do birthdays. I just mentioned William Shatner.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Do you know that Sunday was his birthday? He turned
- 20:45Speaker 1: ninety five on Sunday, and then and then and then
- 20:49Speaker 1: the next day he gets worded, they're canceling Star Trek.
- 20:52Speaker 1: What a bummer.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Happy birthday, George George.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Benson turned eighty three Sunday. Wolf Blitzer turned seventy eight
- 21:00Speaker 1: on Sunday. Andrew Lloyd Webber turned seventy eight on Sunday.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Bob Costas turned seventy four on Sunday. Let's see Matthew
- 21:13Speaker 1: Modine turned sixty seven Sunday. Keegan Michael Key, who is hilarious,
- 21:19Speaker 1: turn fifty five on Sunday. Colhauser from Yellowstone Rip turned
- 21:27Speaker 1: fifty one on Sunday. Reese Witherspoon hit the Big five.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Oh Sunday, can you believe that. Go girl yesterday. Chaka
- 21:42Speaker 1: Khan turned seventy three yesterday. Katherine Keener turned sixty seven yesterday.

- 28:34Speaker 1: in mind. This is Joe Popolardo. It is an amazing
- 28:39Speaker 1: story of Borger, Texas in the nineteen twenties during Prohibition.
- 28:45Speaker 1: It's called Boomtown and again Joe Popolardo is the author. Joe,
- 28:52Speaker 1: how are you. I'm doing great?
- 28:54Speaker 12: How are you doing?
- 28:55Speaker 1: I'm doing well. This is wild. I grew up in
- 28:59Speaker 1: this state, been here all my life, did not know
- 29:02Speaker 1: the story. How did this story come to you?
- 29:07Speaker 12: It was an once you sort of get introduced to Borgery,
- 29:13Speaker 12: it kind of sticks with a few and I was
- 29:15Speaker 12: looking at Frank Hamer quite frankly. I was writing about
- 29:19Speaker 12: the Texas Rangers, and I definitely wanted to do something
- 29:22Speaker 12: a little bit more modern and build into the sort
- 29:25Speaker 12: of the more the evolution of the Rangers. And he's
- 29:27Speaker 12: the best bridge between the past and the future. And
- 29:31Speaker 12: you know, he had been brought into the Rangers by
- 29:35Speaker 12: captains who worked in the eighteen hundreds when I had
- 29:37Speaker 12: book set in there, so he was part of the
- 29:39Speaker 12: Ranger continuity. But then I hit Borger, right, and he
- 29:45Speaker 12: was sent there by the governor to clean up Borger.
- 29:48Speaker 12: And it's a couple of pages in most biographies, which
- 29:51Speaker 12: are good. I like the biographies, but those two pages
- 29:56Speaker 12: are my entire book.
- 29:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 29:58Speaker 12: I tried to slow it down to really try and
- 30:01Speaker 12: show the trade craft and the challenge and what happened
- 30:05Speaker 12: in that town and who was there and what they
- 30:08Speaker 12: wanted to get out of it, and you know, why
- 30:10Speaker 12: was it so bad? And you know, and just get
- 30:13Speaker 12: into all those questions. And I realized that that's all
- 30:16Speaker 12: you needed for an entire book, was just profiling one
- 30:18Speaker 12: year of this insane place and during this insane time
- 30:22Speaker 12: with one of the best, you know, foils for that
- 30:25Speaker 12: kind of revelry and violence. And here comes Frank Hamer,
- 30:28Speaker 12: the most famous Texas Ranger, is the one who is
- 30:31Speaker 12: tasked to clean it up. And it was just too perfect.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Tell our listeners who Ace Borger was.
- 30:40Speaker 12: So Ace Borger is. I still try and think of it,
- 30:43Speaker 12: like these guys are all still alive. As Borger was
- 30:46Speaker 12: a Stockholm syndrome for authors.
- 30:49Speaker 1: It's a real thing.
- 30:50Speaker 12: So he was a land speculator who heard a well
- 30:55Speaker 12: first of all her he ran a town in Oklahoma
- 30:59Speaker 12: called Cromwell, which was famously corrupt, and he fostered that
- 31:05Speaker 12: it was called an open city where they basically ignored
- 31:08Speaker 12: prohibition and laws, you know, forbidding prostitution and gambling and
- 31:13Speaker 12: selling opium to pretty much as long as you paid
- 31:15Speaker 12: off to the local law. So they got pretty much
- 31:19Speaker 12: shut down. It ran out of Oklahoma, even to the
- 31:21Speaker 12: point where locals had burned down some of their buildings
- 31:24Speaker 12: and they found their new home based off of an
- 31:27Speaker 12: oil development tip in Border in Texas. So that whole
- 31:31Speaker 12: infrastructure of cops and crooked cops and crooked land speculators
- 31:36Speaker 12: who want to be politicians, and the underclass of bootleggers
- 31:41Speaker 12: and prostitutes, all documented started there and all came to
- 31:45Speaker 12: Border all at once. Ninety days after its founding, it
- 31:49Speaker 12: had grown to forty five thousand people. So you know,
- 31:54Speaker 12: it was by design, a you know, a place that
- 31:58Speaker 12: was born to sort of be bad, you know, not
- 32:00Speaker 12: as bad as it became. Probably the violence became a
- 32:04Speaker 12: little out of control and that became not good for business.
- 32:07Speaker 12: But business included all of that vice, and the vice
- 32:10Speaker 12: industry was one of the reasons why they wanted to
- 32:12Speaker 12: have a city to begin with. And it attracts people,
- 32:15Speaker 12: and those people attract people who want to feed those
- 32:17Speaker 12: people bread and provide services to them. It's the straight people,
- 32:21Speaker 12: you know, So it's not just the underworld all of
- 32:23Speaker 12: a sudden, You've got this whole other class of people
- 32:25Speaker 12: who just want a second chance. So, you know, the
- 32:28Speaker 12: dynamics of the town became very interesting the more I
- 32:31Speaker 12: dug into it.
- 32:32Speaker 1: I want to repeat what you just said. In ninety
- 32:35Speaker 1: days there were forty five thousand people at Border.
- 32:40Speaker 12: It's just an irresponsible level of growth. It's just you
- 32:46Speaker 12: can't and it starts selling itself. Wiley all there and
- 32:49Speaker 12: it's snowballs. But yeah, there was no lights, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 12: open sewers. The dereks were next to the houses that
- 32:56Speaker 12: were ramshackle. You know, you're walking down Mainz Street and
- 33:01Speaker 12: there's you know, you've got plenty of you know, prostitutes
- 33:04Speaker 12: hanging out, you know, selling their wares, and and then
- 33:09Speaker 12: you know you're hitting the speakeasies a little bit and
- 33:13Speaker 12: you notice that the drug stores are still open and
- 33:15Speaker 12: they're selling things and including booze and other drugs. And
- 33:19Speaker 12: then you get to the really bad street Dixon, and
- 33:23Speaker 12: you know, you know that's Border back then. And those
- 33:26Speaker 12: are all again based on contemporary accounts, you know, you know,
- 33:30Speaker 12: the descriptions of people who loved it there in their boosters,
- 33:33Speaker 12: and people who you know, hated it or visited once
- 33:37Speaker 12: and had an opinion. And I tried to bake it
- 33:39Speaker 12: all into the scene setting because it's all true, you know,
- 33:42Speaker 12: depending on where you're sitting. You know, a dance hall
- 33:44Speaker 12: operator has a whole different idea about the town's worth.
- 33:48Speaker 12: And you know, if you wanted to get a prosecute,
- 33:51Speaker 12: you get a prosector. You want to go in a
- 33:52Speaker 12: dance hall for a diamond dance, that's a whole different setup, right,
- 33:56Speaker 12: And there's variations within the within the black that are very,
- 34:01Speaker 12: very gray. And it was interesting when Frank Hamer saw
- 34:04Speaker 12: that too. Sometimes in the Kanas case of the dance halls,
- 34:07Speaker 12: not so much, but in other things he did.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Aside from the bootleggers, the gamblers. By the way, this
- 34:16Speaker 1: is during prohibition, is it not, And it was just
- 34:20Speaker 1: openly blatantly ignored.
- 34:23Speaker 12: Absolutely blatantly ignored. Yeah, they declared it basically and open town.
- 34:28Speaker 12: And the locals weren't going to do anything about it.
- 34:30Speaker 12: And the prohibition people can only come in without local support.
- 34:33Speaker 12: There's not much that they can do.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Aside from the oil field workers, how did forty five
- 34:39Speaker 1: thousand people show up so quickly in a world where
- 34:43Speaker 1: news did not travel that fast?
- 34:47Speaker 12: The news was traveling fast by wire and by newspaper
- 34:50Speaker 12: all the ways that they when you read how the
- 34:53Speaker 12: advertised for it, Yeah, and they said land for sale.
- 34:57Speaker 12: Come and stake your new future at the Pittsburgh of
- 35:00Speaker 12: Texas or whatever they're calling it, you know whatever that
- 35:03Speaker 12: you know, we're on a train line. We're going to
- 35:07Speaker 12: be great. And hey, by the way, we're a bunch
- 35:10Speaker 12: of guys from Oklahoma who just set up an insanely
- 35:13Speaker 12: popular boom town. Get in on it now. And people
- 35:17Speaker 12: showed up, you know, in droves, because they wanted good, bad,
- 35:22Speaker 12: ugly across the spectrum. They wanted another opportunity. They want
- 35:25Speaker 12: to make something to themselves. It's a very human I
- 35:29Speaker 12: don't care if you're Shine pulp Joy, the king of
- 35:31Speaker 12: the Texas bootleggers, or if you're Maddie Castleberry that you
- 35:35Speaker 12: know who wants to go operate a legitimate dance hall,
- 35:38Speaker 12: or you know Dutch Becky, the professional wrestler who who's
- 35:42Speaker 12: defending his title as a hometown you know, professional wrestling hero.
- 35:47Speaker 12: You got something, someone's going to try and take it
- 35:49Speaker 12: from you. But you've got a chance to build it
- 35:51Speaker 12: in borderom right. If you can defend it, you gotta
- 35:54Speaker 12: against all circumstances and all comers. But you know that's
- 35:58Speaker 12: the shared ethos amongst all these people except Frank Hamer.
- 36:01Speaker 12: He just wants to get the hell out. The Rangers
- 36:03Speaker 12: just want to leave. So against all of that is
- 36:06Speaker 12: the you know, the people who their reward is just leaving,
- 36:10Speaker 12: and that is part of why it was such a challenge.
- 36:13Speaker 12: And if you want to view it as their undoing
- 36:15Speaker 12: of this particular effort, that's a part of it that
- 36:18Speaker 12: plays in.
- 36:19Speaker 1: I know that the name Frank Hamer rigs a belt
- 36:21Speaker 1: with some people. I will remind them that he was
- 36:25Speaker 1: famous frankly as a Texas Ranger, but became worldwide famous
- 36:31Speaker 1: when he killed Bonnie and Clyde in nineteen thirty four.
- 36:37Speaker 12: Yes, he's the one of the central characters in it.
- 36:42Speaker 12: It was really interesting to see him in the stage
- 36:44Speaker 12: of his career when he's the senior captain.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Yeah, when.
- 36:49Speaker 12: When they when the governor called him in the you know,
- 36:51Speaker 12: hunt down Bonnie and Clyde. It was after he was
- 36:54Speaker 12: out of the Rangers, but it was a very similar
- 36:56Speaker 12: sort of a call that he has used to get
- 36:58Speaker 12: in which was, so thing is out of control. You know,
- 37:02Speaker 12: we need someone with some some grit and some heft
- 37:05Speaker 12: who can go in there and establish some order.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And he didn't buy shooting people.
- 37:10Speaker 12: He didn't mind shooting people, that was but I always
- 37:12Speaker 12: think of that as one of the tools in his toolkit.
- 37:16Speaker 12: So if that was the shortest distance between the two
- 37:19Speaker 12: lines of justice and he would achieve what the governor needed,
- 37:22Speaker 12: Oh yeah, okay, that's what you do. But if that
- 37:27Speaker 12: means you know, unraveling, you know, a bombing, you know
- 37:32Speaker 12: some you know, and using his investigative skills, his holster
- 37:35Speaker 12: doesn't come out. If that means you know, step by
- 37:38Speaker 12: step like it we described in the book, Yes, we
- 37:41Speaker 12: describe in the book, you know, trying to tie a
- 37:44Speaker 12: noose around a corrupt politician who's accepting money and doing
- 37:47Speaker 12: a sting. Well, he's going to do that too. If
- 37:49Speaker 12: he's going to take out his gun out of the holster,
- 37:51Speaker 12: he could be pistol whipping someone in the street to
- 37:53Speaker 12: get you know, get everyone's compliance in a situation instead
- 37:57Speaker 12: of shooting. Or he could be you know, putting someone
- 38:00Speaker 12: down for a reason. It's all part of his toolkit.
- 38:02Speaker 12: And as he got older, he was more selective in
- 38:06Speaker 12: which one of those tools he'd reach for, because with
- 38:08Speaker 12: age some sort of wisdom. But he would still reserve
- 38:12Speaker 12: that option of putting me down that was never not
- 38:14Speaker 12: in the toolkit, if you know what I mean.
- 38:16Speaker 1: The book is called Boomtown, The True Story of the
- 38:19Speaker 1: Wickedest Town in Texas. It is a fascinating look at
- 38:24Speaker 1: border Texas. Joe Papelardo is the author. Joe, thank you
