- 0:16Speaker 3: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Presented by Toyota's official website for deals by a Toyota
- 0:22Speaker 4: dot Com.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here at Jillette Stadium, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: we just came off the practice field. Practice stop ended
- 0:34Speaker 2: around one point fifteen today, so we're here to talk
- 0:37Speaker 2: about everything we've seen over the last few days since
- 0:40Speaker 2: we were last with you on this show, which was Sunday.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I guess it's Deuce, it's Paul, it's me Evan. I'll
- 0:48Speaker 2: be by later. But you know, before we start out, guys,
- 0:51Speaker 2: I just feel like I need to give Patriots Nation
- 0:55Speaker 2: a little bit of a reset and talk. You know
- 0:59Speaker 2: What's It's been a rough forty eight hours, right, you
- 1:03Speaker 2: had the Christian Balm wore news, which which is tough.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You know, you had you know, Judon showing himself you know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: yesterday and all that stuff that came with it. Drake
- 1:17Speaker 2: May didn't have the best day. Your guys, your real
- 1:19Speaker 2: Pepper's got nicked up. Yeah, I mean, so you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: There's been a lot of stuff written, but yesterday was
- 1:31Speaker 2: the first day of padded practice. But the hysteria about
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know, Drake May shades of Mac Jones. You know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: Mac Jones was never this bad. And and you know Pete,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, you know, uh, Mayo is just another Pete Carroll, who,
- 1:46Speaker 2: by the way, wasn't a bad coach. But you know
- 1:48Speaker 2: he's not. He's they're walking all over you know, Gerard Mayo.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Jacoby Brissette separated himself from Drake May yesterday.
- 1:58Speaker 5: You know, well that part was true.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Well, yeah, he's a seven year veteran. It was the
- 2:03Speaker 2: first day. Okay, it was the first day of padded practice.
- 2:06Speaker 2: If he wasn't separated from a rookie, something's wrong, I
- 2:10Speaker 2: would exc We're not looking for who can separate. We're
- 2:13Speaker 2: looking to see if Drake May and get to where
- 2:16Speaker 2: at least Jacoby Brissette is in the NFL. There's no
- 2:19Speaker 2: like well ever, well like now now, like let's see,
- 2:23Speaker 2: let's see, right, he isn't, no, and I don't expect
- 2:27Speaker 2: him to be on the first day of padded practice,
- 2:29Speaker 2: did you no?
- 2:31Speaker 5: Yeah, so, I mean, I mean, I I don't I
- 2:33Speaker 5: don't think he has a chance to start Week one, so.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Whatever, but like, you know, like, but I mean the
- 2:39Speaker 2: hysteria about the fact that he had a rough day,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, on the on the first day of anything
- 2:44Speaker 2: that resembled real football. He had a rough day. Okay,
- 2:47Speaker 2: you know, Judon Judan acted crazy yesterday and he's not
- 2:54Speaker 2: here today.
- 2:55Speaker 5: I wouldn't be surprised if those two things are linked, Freddy, I.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Would expect that's exactly why he's not here. I think
- 3:02Speaker 2: I think Droid Mayo gave him a little leash and
- 3:05Speaker 2: took it away from him after he showed his ass.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Let's face it. I'm not saying that Judah is a villain,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and I know he said he doesn't want to be.
- 3:12Speaker 2: He's asking for money. That's great. You know, players, I
- 3:18Speaker 2: remember Tylaw calling Bill Belichick a liar. Yep, I remember
- 3:21Speaker 2: Mankin's being pissed off and saying some pretty harsh things.
- 3:25Speaker 2: You know. You know, Richard Seymour, you know, name a
- 3:29Speaker 2: lot of players. So this is nothing new. The only
- 3:32Speaker 2: thing that was a little different is Judeou came to
- 3:34Speaker 2: practice because he was allowed to. That's the new part.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Yeah, And the new part was the public spectacle of it.
- 3:40Speaker 5: And I think, in all seriousness, I do think that
- 3:44Speaker 5: they probably said, you know what, you ain't practicing tomorrow either, right, right,
- 3:48Speaker 5: because that was unprofessional. And I've been very much pro
- 3:52Speaker 5: player with a lot of these squabbles. And you're right,
- 3:54Speaker 5: he's not a villain for wanting more money. He's a
- 3:57Speaker 5: villain for acting like a petulant child yesterday. Yeah, he
- 4:00Speaker 5: tried to embarrass his coach in the front office.
- 4:03Speaker 2: He was like a kid in class that was constantly
- 4:06Speaker 2: disrupting the class. And what do you do. Then you
- 4:09Speaker 2: get them out of the class because the rest of
- 4:12Speaker 2: the kids want to learn. And that's what we had yesterday.
- 4:15Speaker 2: And that's what grod Mayo did.
- 4:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:17Speaker 5: I was wondering if we were going to get maybe
- 4:19Speaker 5: some kind of a announcement about that, But you know,
- 4:24Speaker 5: maybe they're just going to keep it in house and
- 4:25Speaker 5: move on. But I wouldn't be surprised if Girod said,
- 4:28Speaker 5: you know what, you can take tomorrow watch.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I mean, we can we'll see you later on in
- 4:32Speaker 2: the show. We can talk about the different scenarios that
- 4:34Speaker 2: could happen with Matt Judon, you know, but what did
- 4:38Speaker 2: happen yesterday was he acted up and Gerrod kicked him
- 4:42Speaker 2: out of class and he's still out of class. So
- 4:45Speaker 2: whatever reason that is, he's still not here. And Girod
- 4:50Speaker 2: did what he had to do for the rest of
- 4:51Speaker 2: the team because that who he needs to focus on
- 4:54Speaker 2: right now is the players who are here, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: so like but but the know the fact, you know
- 5:01Speaker 2: some of the people talking about this yesterday, it's just
- 5:04Speaker 2: like you would think that, you know.
- 5:05Speaker 5: It was a tough day for ever, like the bar
- 5:08Speaker 5: going to look.
- 5:08Speaker 6: At each thing individual, right, but that's what But then
- 5:11Speaker 6: all happening at once to me, Yeah, like bar more So,
- 5:15Speaker 6: let's just your three best defensive players all had something
- 5:20Speaker 6: happened to him yesterday, right, Yeah, like on the same day.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tough.
- 5:25Speaker 7: L Peppers.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm doing I'm doing it for you Peppers, Bar
- 5:29Speaker 5: Moore and Juda and you know. And then on the
- 5:32Speaker 5: other side, the thing that you probably most excited I'll
- 5:37Speaker 5: speak for myself personally. The thing I'm most excited about
- 5:40Speaker 5: is the third overall pick. Quarterback kind of has gotten
- 5:43Speaker 5: off to a you know, a pretty slow start a camp,
- 5:46Speaker 5: and really I thought struggled yesterday. I thought there were
- 5:50Speaker 5: a couple of things I liked a little bit more today,
- 5:52Speaker 5: but still not great. I thought today the bigger problem
- 5:55Speaker 5: than May. I thought he was let down a little
- 5:57Speaker 5: bit by his receivers, but a couple all of those
- 5:59Speaker 5: things together, combined all those things, it's a tough day yesterday.
- 6:03Speaker 3: It was.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And that's what I said. It doesn't it.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Doesn't mean like we have to say there's no hope
- 6:09Speaker 5: for anything in the future. The next five years are shot.
- 6:12Speaker 5: And I don't really think anybody's saying that. I think
- 6:13Speaker 5: there people were saying yesterday was a train wreck. Yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 5: and it kind of was.
- 6:18Speaker 7: It was.
- 6:19Speaker 2: It's a tough day. It was a tough forty eight hours.
- 6:21Speaker 8: Especially if you like the defense, and that's you know,
- 6:24Speaker 8: that's that's been my thing. And I think one thing
- 6:26Speaker 8: that we've kind of hung our hat on was like,
- 6:27Speaker 8: I think the defense will be pretty good this year.
- 6:29Speaker 8: I know, you know, not everybody agrees to what level
- 6:31Speaker 8: they'll be. Okay, but you look at, as Paul said,
- 6:33Speaker 8: three very impactful players that now have question marks, and
- 6:37Speaker 8: I would say, after yesterday, my question mark about Matthew Judon,
- 6:40Speaker 8: it's a bigger question mark than.
- 6:42Speaker 7: It was earlier. We don't know when Christian Barmore is
- 6:44Speaker 7: going to get back.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I wouldn't count who's going to rush the.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Passer this year, you know.
- 6:48Speaker 8: And that's and then and as we're watching practice and
- 6:51Speaker 8: we're seeing some good reps with the top off first
- 6:53Speaker 8: offensive line where there's a pocket there and Brissett's able
- 6:56Speaker 8: to get the pocket out, and you feel like they're
- 6:57Speaker 8: making some progress there. But at the same time, you're
- 7:00Speaker 8: watching this defense kind of fall apart here through the
- 7:01Speaker 8: first week of camp.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Well, when you say fall apart, you mean losing just
- 7:06Speaker 2: losing pieces, and they've been playing pretty well out there, right, Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 8: I mean, you know, I mean I think we can
- 7:11Speaker 8: talk now about the one on ones where you know,
- 7:13Speaker 8: I think the absence of those guys in those one
- 7:15Speaker 8: on one drills and you know, I think can speak
- 7:17Speaker 8: to it as he walks in here is you know,
- 7:20Speaker 8: you're making the offensive line look better all of a
- 7:22Speaker 8: sudden because you don't have the terror that is Christian
- 7:25Speaker 8: Barmore go going against some of those interior guys. I
- 7:27Speaker 8: also thought to Paul a couple of spats snaps today
- 7:29Speaker 8: for may you know, going with Mafi with the third
- 7:32Speaker 8: you know, the third string really struggled to really struggle
- 7:35Speaker 8: in that group.
- 7:35Speaker 5: And the snaps have been all over the place because
- 7:38Speaker 5: and we should probably point out because David Andrews isn't
- 7:40Speaker 5: out there the last two days has Nick Leverett has
- 7:43Speaker 5: been with the first group, and Mafi has been with
- 7:46Speaker 5: the second group. And I do notice may catching a
- 7:48Speaker 5: lot of snaps around his knees and chins. Yep, And
- 7:52Speaker 5: that's tough. That to me, that that throws off rhythm
- 7:55Speaker 5: right off. But before you even get started, before your
- 7:57Speaker 5: eyes can even do anything, you have to focus and
- 8:00Speaker 5: getting the snaps. Yeah, it's not all Drake may.
- 8:02Speaker 2: No, it's not all Drake Maye, but a lot of it. Obviously,
- 8:05Speaker 2: he looks like a rookie playing with you know, guys
- 8:10Speaker 2: who aren't you know, are starting from scratch. This is
- 8:13Speaker 2: an offense that's starting from scratch, you know. And so
- 8:16Speaker 2: now you're a rookie quarterback along for the ride. It's
- 8:19Speaker 2: gonna be rough. But I wouldn't let up on him.
- 8:22Speaker 2: If I was the coaches I would be. I would
- 8:24Speaker 2: be coaching him hard. I would even go to this
- 8:26Speaker 2: extreme at times. I would tell the defense what's coming.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I would let them cheat, and then afterwards I would
- 8:33Speaker 2: use it as hey, Drake, what did you see? You know,
- 8:37Speaker 2: here's the thing. If you see this again, you know
- 8:40Speaker 2: that they're onto you. Maybe you can audible out. And
- 8:42Speaker 2: then three days later, I do the exact same thing
- 8:45Speaker 2: again and see if he learned, and see if he is,
- 8:48Speaker 2: and see I see if he's a mistake repeater. You know,
- 8:52Speaker 2: I put him in a situation where he's going to fail,
- 8:55Speaker 2: Let him fail, teach him why he failed, teach him
- 8:58Speaker 2: how not to fail the next time, and then later
- 9:01Speaker 2: on see if he learned. I mean, that's how you
- 9:04Speaker 2: have to do it. You have to test his limits.
- 9:07Speaker 8: I just say, today I thought, you know, and Paul
- 9:09Speaker 8: laid out it was, you know, an okay day better
- 9:11Speaker 8: he completed some passes, and I think, you know, even
- 9:13Speaker 8: just having Douglas run drills, all of a sudden, you've
- 9:16Speaker 8: got somebody with some real shake in the middle.
- 9:18Speaker 7: I thought one of you know, one of his reps,
- 9:19Speaker 7: I felt like he missed him.
- 9:20Speaker 8: But just the sheer volume, I mean, I counted out
- 9:23Speaker 8: of the twenty two eleven on eleven extra sets, he
- 9:26Speaker 8: got extra set, you know, And I just and even
- 9:28Speaker 8: at the end when it was kind of opportunity reps
- 9:30Speaker 8: he was still in there.
- 9:31Speaker 7: Nice day for Joe Milton too, but I.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Think Joel Milton was great.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, a couple of nice throws.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I don't think it means anything, but I thought he
- 9:37Speaker 5: was great.
- 9:37Speaker 8: But I say no, and it stayed as it's kind
- 9:40Speaker 8: of been. But I just thought the amount of reps
- 9:41Speaker 8: that they got for Drake today, that's.
- 9:42Speaker 7: What he needs. He needs to see this stuff.
- 9:44Speaker 8: He needs to wrap it over and over and over
- 9:45Speaker 8: again with a variety, wide variety of people. So to me,
- 9:48Speaker 8: that's almost the best thing to come out of the day.
- 9:50Speaker 8: It's just that he's getting a lot of work and
- 9:51Speaker 8: then making sure of it.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, first reps for Douglas against the defense too,
- 9:57Speaker 5: so you did see that. There was one one of
- 9:59Speaker 5: the first that May had I think in seven on
- 10:02Speaker 5: seven was just a quick out to Douglas that was
- 10:05Speaker 5: as effortless as it could be. You know, the throw
- 10:07Speaker 5: comes out. Douglas has created separation, easy throw, easy pitch
- 10:12Speaker 5: and catch.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So Douglas was out there in a red non contact jersey,
- 10:16Speaker 2: so obviously you can't jam him on the line or
- 10:18Speaker 2: anything like that. I guess he had a free release
- 10:20Speaker 2: every time. But you can see the difference in his
- 10:24Speaker 2: quickness with some of the other guys.
- 10:26Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, he's a difference maker.
- 10:28Speaker 8: And I gotta highlight Gele and Polk too, because he
- 10:31Speaker 8: just continues to show up and to be targeted. He
- 10:34Speaker 8: gets a lot of reps. You know, he comes up
- 10:37Speaker 8: with some tough catches. You know, I think he had
- 10:38Speaker 8: dropped today, So you know, it's not perfect, But to me,
- 10:43Speaker 8: he just looks like a tough, productive kind of receiver.
- 10:46Speaker 7: Is he a game changing weapon?
- 10:47Speaker 8: I don't know about all that stuff, but to me,
- 10:49Speaker 8: when I look out there, he's been the most consistent
- 10:52Speaker 8: guy in terms of he's out there a lot, he's
- 10:54Speaker 8: getting targeted, He's making some plays here and there. I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 8: you mentioned the Milton play. I thought was beautiful to him.
- 11:00Speaker 8: He's I think he's having a good camp. He's having
- 11:02Speaker 8: a good start. Javon Baker's been a little bit more
- 11:03Speaker 8: boomer bust. You know, it's he shows up with a
- 11:05Speaker 8: big play and then he's kind of quiet still like
- 11:07Speaker 8: what he's what he's doing. But all those receivers are
- 11:09Speaker 8: really you know, getting a chance.
- 11:11Speaker 2: They're trying to sort it out.
- 11:12Speaker 8: I spent today kind of died just charting what receivers
- 11:15Speaker 8: were doing, what reps, and it's a it's a huge rotation,
- 11:18Speaker 8: even the tight ends. All the tight ends are getting
- 11:20Speaker 8: you know, a chance out there, so they're they're trying
- 11:23Speaker 8: to piece it all together right now.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they had some different drills where they have two
- 11:27Speaker 2: quarterbacks in one field, two on the other, and one
- 11:30Speaker 2: was focused on running back and tight end throws. The
- 11:32Speaker 2: other was wide receiver throws. And then they moved the
- 11:35Speaker 2: quarterbacks around so they got to you know, be with
- 11:38Speaker 2: both groups. But they're really you know, today was a heavy,
- 11:42Speaker 2: I would say, a heavy past day, a lot of
- 11:45Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of both. Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Yeah, Like the first team periods, I think they had
- 11:49Speaker 5: six plays and there were four runs each. Yeah, and
- 11:52Speaker 5: then they sort of cycled through. But Mike's right, there
- 11:54Speaker 5: was I thought there was an extra set of six plays.
- 11:57Speaker 5: It was like red zone. Oh, by the way, they
- 11:59Speaker 5: did reds on today. They had like six plays of
- 12:04Speaker 5: red zone. Then they went back out around midfield and
- 12:07Speaker 5: May stayed out and did six more plays, which was
- 12:09Speaker 5: the first time I thought he doubled up.
- 12:11Speaker 9: Eleven straight reps, which was I believe the longest that
- 12:14Speaker 9: we've seen him reping consecutively in the practice. In it
- 12:18Speaker 9: it wasn't pretty, but the volume is a good thing,
- 12:21Speaker 9: I would say, just for him, And I remember Max's
- 12:24Speaker 9: rookie camp that that's how it would go. Would be
- 12:27Speaker 9: Cam Newton would get a drive and then Mac would
- 12:29Speaker 9: get three drives and then you know, maybe the third
- 12:32Speaker 9: quarterback would get in there at that point. But it
- 12:34Speaker 9: feels like with Drake may just quickly my thoughts on it.
- 12:38Speaker 9: Processing is obviously a place where he needs to start
- 12:41Speaker 9: right now. I think maybe some of the conversations we've
- 12:45Speaker 9: had about his footwork and all that kind of stuff,
- 12:48Speaker 9: maybe a little bit too much focus on that and
- 12:50Speaker 9: not enough focus on his timing and his anticipation and
- 12:53Speaker 9: those types of things that come with being an NFL quarterback.
- 12:56Speaker 9: But just you know, talking to some of the reporters
- 12:58Speaker 9: after practice, one thing we all kind of agreed on
- 13:01Speaker 9: is that if you expect him this early on to
- 13:04Speaker 9: just sit in the pocket and light up a defense,
- 13:07Speaker 9: I just don't really think he's that kind of quarterback.
- 13:09Speaker 5: That's unrealistic.
- 13:10Speaker 9: So he's not gonna sit there and dice up a
- 13:13Speaker 9: defense and be on time on everything and things like that.
- 13:16Speaker 9: So I am curious when they get out into the
- 13:18Speaker 9: preseason game next week, if all of a sudden, now
- 13:21Speaker 9: he's able to move around and he's able to do
- 13:23Speaker 9: some of those off platform and off script things and
- 13:26Speaker 9: things of that nature, does he make more plays doing that?
- 13:29Speaker 9: Whereas right now you're really asking him to just run
- 13:32Speaker 9: in structure, you know, like he's Tom Brady and he's
- 13:34Speaker 9: just hitting the top of the drop and getting the
- 13:36Speaker 9: ball out. And at his age and his developmental timeline,
- 13:39Speaker 9: I'm just not sure he's ready for that.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Just so, and I thought, like and I mentioned at
- 13:43Speaker 5: the beginning, I thought his receivers didn't really give him
- 13:47Speaker 5: a ton of help today. And there were a couple
- 13:49Speaker 5: of plays during that extended set that Evan just talked
- 13:52Speaker 5: about where it was like five or six plays and
- 13:54Speaker 5: then they doubled up. There was a crosser to Javon Baker,
- 13:59Speaker 5: which I think showed a little subtle move in the
- 14:03Speaker 5: pocket one of those little drop down throws, and Baker
- 14:06Speaker 5: kind of stopped. And I don't know if maybe Jones
- 14:08Speaker 5: got a hold of him or if Baker just throttled down,
- 14:11Speaker 5: but I thought it was thrown well and ended up
- 14:13Speaker 5: out in front of him. They couldn't make the connection.
- 14:16Speaker 5: The next play is one of those hard to play
- 14:17Speaker 5: actions that me and Evan talk about all the time
- 14:19Speaker 5: where they you know, they reversed the role and he's
- 14:21Speaker 5: rolling to his left, which is not easy to do
- 14:24Speaker 5: when he's throwing. You know, he's got a turn his
- 14:26Speaker 5: shoulders throws and he layered it beautiful, looked like a
- 14:29Speaker 5: zone polk was there. The throw was a little high,
- 14:32Speaker 5: but he get both hands on it, and you know,
- 14:34Speaker 5: he doesn't make the catch. You know, like I thought
- 14:35Speaker 5: the throw was pretty good.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that type of thing.
- 14:38Speaker 5: So I I understand what Evan's talking about, Like he's
- 14:43Speaker 5: trying to sort of process the plays and stay on
- 14:45Speaker 5: script and do what the play is designed to do.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Once he's able to sort of take a play like
- 14:52Speaker 5: that and say, well that's kind of there, but I
- 14:55Speaker 5: got to fit it in, I might just be able
- 14:56Speaker 5: to get like eight yards by by running or you know,
- 15:00Speaker 5: doing something else by extending the play. He probably they
- 15:03Speaker 5: probably don't want him extending plays now.
- 15:07Speaker 2: In that first preseason game. Do you think he'll be
- 15:09Speaker 2: coached not to do that, like stay with the script.
- 15:11Speaker 2: That's a good point, you know, I don't know, it's hard.
- 15:14Speaker 8: It's hard to say, like a kid in his first
- 15:15Speaker 8: NFL game just stay in the Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 9: So it's a you know, non arm side boot leg,
- 15:21Speaker 9: and I thought he looked really comfortable going to his
- 15:23Speaker 9: right bootlegging to his right and to his left. That's
- 15:26Speaker 9: a very difficult throw to make because you got to
- 15:28Speaker 9: get your shoulders back up field. It's really hard to do.
- 15:30Speaker 9: And I thought he it was a little high. Like
- 15:33Speaker 9: you said, it was definitely a little high, but maybe
- 15:35Speaker 9: catchable in that circumstance. But I think in general right now,
- 15:39Speaker 9: it just looks like he's overthinking the game a little bit.
- 15:41Speaker 9: He's not seeing the field particularly fast or well, whereas
- 15:44Speaker 9: I would just like to see him just kind of
- 15:46Speaker 9: be a gunslinger and be an athlete, but that might
- 15:48Speaker 9: not come until you get into a game setting and
- 15:51Speaker 9: they'd allow him to do that more instead of what
- 15:54Speaker 9: they're trying, you know.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And I'll say the same thing for him that I
- 15:58Speaker 2: said would map that for I hope they allow him
- 16:01Speaker 2: to make mistakes. I really do, because if they if
- 16:05Speaker 2: they micro manage it and coddle him too much, he's
- 16:07Speaker 2: never gonna learn his limits, you know.
- 16:09Speaker 5: So the other throw at the end of that one,
- 16:11Speaker 5: because those were like the red zone pustion of the
- 16:13Speaker 5: first set of the double the double reps that he got.
- 16:17Speaker 5: The last one I think was kind of a fade
- 16:19Speaker 5: to Baker with Sean Wade in coverage, and Jean Wade
- 16:22Speaker 5: did a nice job in coverage. I'm not taking anything
- 16:24Speaker 5: with Wade got his hand on the ball. I just
- 16:26Speaker 5: thought it was a play that I'd like to see
- 16:28Speaker 5: my receiver go up and win that, you know. I
- 16:31Speaker 5: thought he threw a very catchable ball. Wade made a
- 16:34Speaker 5: good play. I mean the check mark on that play
- 16:36Speaker 5: goes to the defense, like Jean Wade broke the pass up.
- 16:39Speaker 5: It was not a drop by Baker by any means,
- 16:42Speaker 5: but again, go up and make a play for him.
- 16:43Speaker 8: Yeah, kind I felt, you know, maybe not totally similar,
- 16:46Speaker 8: but kind of a similar play with Hunter Henry on
- 16:47Speaker 8: the other end where he kind of threw the same thing,
- 16:49Speaker 8: just step back through it and they couldn't quite complete
- 16:51Speaker 8: that one.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Yeah, there was a couple of mister. I thought there
- 16:54Speaker 5: was a back shoulder that he tried to throw to
- 16:56Speaker 5: Henry near the far end zone on that sideline that
- 16:59Speaker 5: did look didn't look good. I don't know who's fault
- 17:02Speaker 5: of well, you know, maybe someone read it wrong. I
- 17:04Speaker 5: don't know, but you know, there were there was different
- 17:07Speaker 5: things there, and like I said, the one thing you
- 17:11Speaker 5: talked about, you know, repeating the mistakes, Freddy, the one
- 17:14Speaker 5: thing I'm a little concerned. Again, it's not even a week.
- 17:17Speaker 5: We still see some of those pumps and then hurried
- 17:20Speaker 5: throws which don't look like they have a lot on them,
- 17:23Speaker 5: you know, and you're not going to get away with them.
- 17:25Speaker 5: There's a lot of them that are going straight out
- 17:27Speaker 5: to the sidelines, like when a play is broken down
- 17:31Speaker 5: and it's like a little it's a little pomp and
- 17:33Speaker 5: then a throat like he's not sitting out, he's not
- 17:35Speaker 5: doing it. And Evans talked about this during our live show,
- 17:38Speaker 5: is the first four days, like physically he can do it.
- 17:41Speaker 5: He can get it there, and he has gotten it
- 17:43Speaker 5: there for the most part in these practices. But it's
- 17:46Speaker 5: that's a dangerous way to live. And he's still doing it.
- 17:48Speaker 8: To me, it's it's just a symptom of everything of
- 17:50Speaker 8: him not seeing it, not being in time, not you know,
- 17:53Speaker 8: it's like this know that you know, it's it's it's
- 17:55Speaker 8: moving speeding up on him and.
- 17:57Speaker 5: It happens two three, four times.
- 17:59Speaker 7: Sure for sure.
- 18:00Speaker 8: I mean, I guess I hope that day off tomorrow
- 18:02Speaker 8: for them. Then we're going to be I think, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 8: another couple of pads. They'll probably get into pads next week. Well,
- 18:06Speaker 8: they won't be pads on Thursday. Hope, hoping that as
- 18:09Speaker 8: we see them take a break, reset off of two
- 18:11Speaker 8: days of pads, tons of reps here to build off of.
- 18:15Speaker 8: Uh that you know, maybe we see some strides Friday, Saturday,
- 18:18Speaker 8: you know, into the weekend as we gear up for
- 18:20Speaker 8: the first preseason again next we it's.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Rolling, the days are rifling through.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So are we allowed to be encouraged using encouraged about
- 18:30Speaker 2: our tackles?
- 18:32Speaker 8: I mean I kind of do. I kind of feel out. Look,
- 18:34Speaker 8: I'm on the side of the street that I just
- 18:36Speaker 8: want to set in and forget. And I'm like, it's
- 18:37Speaker 8: gonna be fine, don't worry. But I you know, look,
- 18:40Speaker 8: it's just just a comparison to the last couple of years.
- 18:43Speaker 8: And I know it's not fair to compare an actual
- 18:45Speaker 8: like offensive line with an offensive line coach who has
- 18:47Speaker 8: a system that knows the head you know, the offensive
- 18:49Speaker 8: coordinator system, you know, to compare to what they were
- 18:52Speaker 8: doing in the past with Matt Patricia when he was
- 18:54Speaker 8: running back and forth between offensive line and you know,
- 18:56Speaker 8: it was you know, now we're talking about Scott Peters
- 18:59Speaker 8: strike system and you know, all these like they seem
- 19:01Speaker 8: to know what they're doing. And I feel like the
- 19:03Speaker 8: last couple of days we've seen some progress, we've seen
- 19:05Speaker 8: some pockets.
- 19:07Speaker 7: Is that gonna be the Peanut Gallery over here?
- 19:10Speaker 2: I don't even know what's talking about, you know.
- 19:12Speaker 8: I gotta omit like I'm kind of like, I think
- 19:15Speaker 8: that I still think the offense wile I was gonna
- 19:16Speaker 8: make it, now I'm completely like, I don't know if
- 19:19Speaker 8: the defense is going to have enough pass rush to
- 19:21Speaker 8: really support the offense.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Now to slow down on what's you know, the defense
- 19:24Speaker 5: being a disaster. I still see a lot of passes
- 19:27Speaker 5: that are either blown up with sacks or you know,
- 19:31Speaker 5: shure it's circuit now. I did make a comment today
- 19:33Speaker 5: to my Peanut Gallery gready in Indy Art because they
- 19:38Speaker 5: confused to watch practices with me. I thought there were
- 19:43Speaker 5: more of those play actions, you know, misdirection boot when
- 19:45Speaker 5: they you know, they play action one way and they
- 19:47Speaker 5: boot the other way. That the quarterback turned around and
- 19:50Speaker 5: didn't have a pass rusher right in his face, and
- 19:52Speaker 5: that was You could count on one hand the amount
- 19:54Speaker 5: of times that happened in the first four or five days.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Today they were able to execute some of those places.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Now there were some that he still, you know, he did.
- 20:02Speaker 5: I think some of those plays get blown up under
- 20:05Speaker 5: real conditions. My big thing that I'm encouraged about with
- 20:10Speaker 5: the tackles is this is three days in a row,
- 20:12Speaker 5: now four days in a row.
- 20:13Speaker 2: It's the same.
- 20:14Speaker 5: One's Chukes at the right side and Kyten Wallace on
- 20:16Speaker 5: the left side. I think they've decided those are my
- 20:19Speaker 5: two tackles. Yeah, yeah, you know, so that that gives
- 20:22Speaker 5: me some encouragement.
- 20:23Speaker 9: When they split into the two one on one groups,
- 20:25Speaker 9: I was watching and they had seven guys or eight guys,
- 20:29Speaker 9: seven guys with the with the top unit, and it
- 20:33Speaker 9: was very clear, right now, those are the top seven guys,
- 20:37Speaker 9: and then the other the backups were over with the
- 20:39Speaker 9: other unit. But there's a chance, and I don't want
- 20:42Speaker 9: to get to ahead of ourselves because it's only two
- 20:44Speaker 9: padded practices. But that was some of the better line
- 20:46Speaker 9: play I've seen the Patriots have in training. Camp in
- 20:49Speaker 9: a couple of years. Over the last couple of days
- 20:51Speaker 9: when I charted the one on ones, I had nine
- 20:53Speaker 9: straight wins for the offensive linemen over the top defensive line,
- 20:57Speaker 9: Uce Jennings a quality wise, you know guys that are
- 21:01Speaker 9: going to be in the mix for the Patriots on
- 21:03Speaker 9: defense this year. Now, Like to Mike's point, there's no Judean,
- 21:07Speaker 9: there's no bar More. Those are two guys that in
- 21:09Speaker 9: one on ones can consistently wreck one on one. So
- 21:14Speaker 9: those are the guys that definitely are missing from this puzzle.
- 21:17Speaker 9: But there's a chance that the Cleveland guys just know
- 21:21Speaker 9: how to coach line play. Like there's a chance that
- 21:23Speaker 9: that's the thing, because they had great lines in Cleveland
- 21:26Speaker 9: for the four years at Alex Van Pelt was there,
- 21:28Speaker 9: and Bill Callahan gets a lot of that credit. But
- 21:31Speaker 9: maybe this system and this coaching staff and the strike
- 21:34Speaker 9: system and all these little things.
- 21:35Speaker 5: That they do and a tutorial on that later.
- 21:38Speaker 10: And in Cleveland, maybe it works.
- 21:41Speaker 5: And you know, they say in Cleveland last year they
- 21:43Speaker 5: were absolutely decimated with injuries and had to keep doing
- 21:46Speaker 5: it with lesser personnel. Yeah, So I mean, in fairness,
- 21:50Speaker 5: I didn't watch I haven't seen any of the one
- 21:52Speaker 5: on ones.
- 21:53Speaker 2: You're not, You're not I'm watching. You don't have the
- 21:55Speaker 2: Sunday ticket with the Cleveland Browns.
- 21:57Speaker 5: No, no, no, the one on ones. They had some one
- 22:00Speaker 5: on ones.
- 22:02Speaker 2: And I was watching a few of them.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I haven't really watched any of that much like
- 22:06Speaker 5: I don't tend to get too into the one on
- 22:09Speaker 5: one with the receivers in general too, because it's just
- 22:12Speaker 5: so hard.
- 22:13Speaker 10: But the full.
- 22:15Speaker 5: Team offensive line play, I thought, to Evan's point and
- 22:18Speaker 5: to Mike's point, strike with was was a little better.
- 22:22Speaker 5: But there was some more play actions that didn't get
- 22:25Speaker 5: immediately blown up. It's a working press. There's a lot
- 22:27Speaker 5: of run plays for no yards too.
- 22:30Speaker 2: They're not tackling yet. And you know so.
- 22:32Speaker 9: Jacoeyber said hit kJ Osborne at the end of practice
- 22:35Speaker 9: on the crossing route where he had he.
- 22:36Speaker 10: Had all day.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly the play you're talking And I haven't seen that.
- 22:41Speaker 10: That's the Patriots practice often, so leave it.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Leave it to Mike too.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Instead of just being encouraged by some progress, it's like,
- 22:48Speaker 5: I don't know if we're gonna be able to get
- 22:49Speaker 5: any pressure on the past.
- 22:50Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know what it means I'm kind of
- 22:53Speaker 9: on the on the fence with Mike about this because
- 22:55Speaker 9: they're missing guys and guys that might not even be
- 22:58Speaker 9: here now without bar Moore and Judi and so I
- 23:00Speaker 9: don't know what to make of it. But some of
- 23:02Speaker 9: the things that you talk to about the lineman, it
- 23:04Speaker 9: seems like they're getting coached really well in that room,
- 23:07Speaker 9: and it's all they're getting better, right, It's getting better
- 23:10Speaker 9: every single time.
- 23:11Speaker 8: Saw that in old camps, right, Yeah, at the like
- 23:13Speaker 8: ye was a nightmare every day those guys were at
- 23:15Speaker 8: the podiums like they.
- 23:16Speaker 10: Look like bleardly, Like this is all without Andrews too.
- 23:20Speaker 5: Yeah, David Andrews has been missing. But for the most part,
- 23:22Speaker 5: you've you've been really healthy up front, and that hasn't
- 23:25Speaker 5: been the case the last few years.
- 23:26Speaker 9: Even the outside zone stuff that they've been running, they've
- 23:29Speaker 9: made some holes for the running backs and some of
- 23:31Speaker 9: the run periods.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Yesterday, I thought there were a couple of really positive runners.
- 23:34Speaker 10: Yeah, and that again not something that I could say
- 23:37Speaker 10: happened often.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Never remember when they tried the zone stuff two years ago,
- 23:42Speaker 5: like every single one of them was a party in
- 23:44Speaker 5: the back, Like why are we even I don't think.
- 23:47Speaker 9: Yeah, the top unit hit one yesterday with Antonio Gibson,
- 23:50Speaker 9: where I think he was gone, like sixty yard touchdown gone.
- 23:53Speaker 10: Yeah, that doesn't happen very all right.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Eight five to five past five hundred is the a
- 23:56Speaker 2: ticke A hotline eight five to five past five hundred
- 23:59Speaker 2: web radio as the email address if you want to email.
- 24:03Speaker 2: And it's easy to drink, it's easy to enjoy. Bud
- 24:05Speaker 2: Light is the official beer sponsor of the Patriots. And

- 24:35Speaker 2: local store and multitask stylishly with Bob's Discount Furniture, the
- 24:40Speaker 2: official furniture store of the New England Patriots. So yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 2: it's good to see the offensive line not just being
- 24:48Speaker 2: pieces of furniture. They're actually getting it done.
- 24:52Speaker 9: Avery Scott Peters actually knows what he's doing. That's the
- 24:55Speaker 9: early returns. That's what I would say.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Well, we've seen it over the years, like the guys
- 25:01Speaker 2: that the Patriots have had on the offensive line haven't
- 25:03Speaker 2: always been you know, pro bowlers or whatever, but Dante
- 25:07Speaker 2: Scarneki just figured it out. Injuries would happened, you plug
- 25:11Speaker 2: somebody else. As long as he's playing the system that
- 25:14Speaker 2: Dante taught and the techniques that he drills into him,
- 25:18Speaker 2: they were okay, they got by. They got by.
- 25:20Speaker 9: So he's gonna take some getting used to with chooks
- 25:22Speaker 9: the cor four though, because his passet is wonky, like
- 25:25Speaker 9: he's able to keep guys in front of him, but
- 25:28Speaker 9: it's not. It doesn't look clean, so we'll see what
- 25:32Speaker 9: it looks like when he's facing some better rushers. He's
- 25:35Speaker 9: the one guy in one on ones where I've had
- 25:37Speaker 9: some losses go his way that it had been a
- 25:39Speaker 9: little bit inconsistent, But you know, I thought Laden Robinson
- 25:42Speaker 9: also was pretty good yesterday, specifically in some of the
- 25:46Speaker 9: drills too. So both rookies, I think are.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Often Even when the Patriots had guys like Matt White,
- 25:51Speaker 2: Jason Taylor would still have his days. You know. So
- 25:55Speaker 2: the good the better, you know, the elite pass rushers,
- 25:58Speaker 2: that's the reason why they were lead is because they
- 26:00Speaker 2: win most of the time. You know, So it's not
- 26:03Speaker 2: gonna be perfect, but you're looking for competency.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Right well, that.
- 26:09Speaker 8: I remember practice is the last two years where it's
- 26:11Speaker 8: like did the offense get anything out of today? Because
- 26:13Speaker 8: they can't run anything, you know, like half the plays
- 26:16Speaker 8: that they try to run, like Paul said, we're you know,
- 26:18Speaker 8: blown up, and like it's like, man, what a waste
- 26:20Speaker 8: of a day, you know, and it's like you're mad
- 26:22Speaker 8: at the defense because they're spinning the dial on you.
- 26:24Speaker 8: But you know it's it's and I mean and and
- 26:26Speaker 8: and Paul's right to you know, it's not like every
- 26:28Speaker 8: play it's just perfect. It's it's at least looks like
- 26:33Speaker 8: a functional offense right now, and that you know, they're
- 26:35Speaker 8: able to everybody's buying in. They understand what they need
- 26:38Speaker 8: to do. It's all connected, you know. That's just kind
- 26:40Speaker 8: of the sense that I'm getting, you know right now,
- 26:42Speaker 8: just watching consistent practice, you're watching improvement, You're watching you know,
- 26:45Speaker 8: some plays that look terrible a couple of days ago,
- 26:47Speaker 8: they're starting to show show some semblance.
- 26:49Speaker 7: Of order and consistency. So hopefully that continues.
- 26:53Speaker 8: And and you know, this next few days is pretty
- 26:55Speaker 8: probably pretty vital because look, you're gonna have three days
- 26:57Speaker 8: of practice, then you're gonna have two next week kind
- 26:59Speaker 8: of get ready for that game, right.
- 27:01Speaker 7: And then one more joint practice. And that's kind of it.
- 27:03Speaker 8: So I think these, uh, these next few practices coming up,
- 27:06Speaker 8: I guess Thursday, Friday, Saturday will be it will be pretty important,
- 27:09Speaker 8: pretty telling and really kind of I think the last
- 27:11Speaker 8: real training camp practice.
- 27:13Speaker 5: And we should, yeah, we should stress that's going to
- 27:15Speaker 5: be it for us to be able to watch the
- 27:17Speaker 5: horse going to continue. Like you know, Bill used to,
- 27:19Speaker 5: Bill would have just you know, thrown up in his
- 27:21Speaker 5: mouth a little bit, like they have a lot more
- 27:22Speaker 5: training camp to go.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, then whatever, what do we have?
- 27:26Speaker 5: Six would today? Six six, seven more that will open
- 27:31Speaker 5: that are open to the public, right, they'll be so
- 27:34Speaker 5: they still have a lot more practice even during the season,
- 27:36Speaker 5: but we will still practice heading into the I have
- 27:38Speaker 5: to go to practice, right and Evan will have to
- 27:41Speaker 5: come back from practice.
- 27:42Speaker 10: I can't wait to hear my jingles.
- 27:44Speaker 7: We're still doing that. I have a jingle now to that.
- 27:48Speaker 10: I think this is really hurt that the.
- 27:52Speaker 8: I have my own jingle, sneaky territorial.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, a five to five past five hundred.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Let's go to the unless anything else you guys want
- 28:00Speaker 2: to cover.
- 28:00Speaker 5: You know, I think you did a good job of
- 28:02Speaker 5: rallying the troops, Fred Fred had a public service announcement.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Everything. I had a level set.
- 28:09Speaker 9: I'm sure we probably are in line and what you said,
- 28:13Speaker 9: but to me, it's just we spent the entire draft
- 28:16Speaker 9: process telling people that Drake May was a little bit
- 28:19Speaker 9: of a project, and then the fact that it doesn't
- 28:21Speaker 9: look perfect on the first and.
- 28:23Speaker 10: Second day of pads. Now we're up in arms that
- 28:26Speaker 10: he's a bust.
- 28:26Speaker 9: Right, I'm not saying it's that people are saying he's
- 28:29Speaker 9: a bust, but we all told you and I'm not
- 28:31Speaker 9: trying to like, oh.
- 28:33Speaker 2: On Holly, Michael Holly said that, you know, it looked
- 28:36Speaker 2: like Mac Jones. Yeah, like Mac Jones against Dallas.
- 28:40Speaker 5: See that's the part that I don't really understand, Like
- 28:44Speaker 5: you could tell me that you don't you know WHOA
- 28:46Speaker 5: Drake May doesn't look anywhere near ready, and I would
- 28:48Speaker 5: probably agree with you. I don't think he looks anywhere
- 28:50Speaker 5: near ready. I agree with that, okay, But there's nothing
- 28:53Speaker 5: resembling mac Jones in any way, shape or form. And
- 28:56Speaker 5: I go back to Mike's thing that he said every
- 28:58Speaker 5: day when we were up in the Rams, it's just
- 29:01Speaker 5: nice not to have to worry about your quarterbacks ability,
- 29:04Speaker 5: his athleticism, his arm strength, his size, his physicality, Like,
- 29:10Speaker 5: none of those are in question. They were all in
- 29:12Speaker 5: question with mac Jones.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And and again mac Jones in Dallas was his third year.
- 29:18Speaker 8: Right, I don't know where he got that camp. Did
- 29:19Speaker 8: he just pick the worst mac Jones game?
- 29:21Speaker 5: And like, that's the one that reminds me, now, that
- 29:23Speaker 5: would be that's a good off season project for me.
- 29:26Speaker 5: Next year was mac Jones's worst?
- 29:28Speaker 2: It was probably that was probably one of his worst interceptions.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Thrown across his body.
- 29:33Speaker 9: He got benched across the pick sicks across his body.
- 29:36Speaker 9: Is the worst throw I've ever seen him make.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Yeah, right, not the only time he did that.
- 29:39Speaker 2: No, it isn't. But it seemed like that was an
- 29:43Speaker 2: especially bad game for him, And I think for Belichick
- 29:46Speaker 2: he really wanted to do better in that game as
- 29:49Speaker 2: a team because maybe it was kind of an audition
- 29:53Speaker 2: because he knew he was gonna be this was his
- 29:55Speaker 2: last year. And I don't know. I'm just saying I
- 29:58Speaker 2: love the Freddy. I'm just saying I think Bill took
- 30:02Speaker 2: that one to heart. Yeah, loss, I think he wanted
- 30:05Speaker 2: a better showing from his team. I was, all right,
- 30:10Speaker 2: so let's get to the phones. Unless you have something else,
- 30:13Speaker 2: let's get to the We'll start off with Jeff and Maine.
- 30:17Speaker 2: What's up, Jeff, Hey, how you doing?
- 30:19Speaker 11: Guys?
- 30:20Speaker 7: All right, Jeff uh So?
- 30:23Speaker 12: Regarding a free safety position, I know that Jaln Hopkins
- 30:28Speaker 12: kind of looking like the guy right now. And that's
- 30:30Speaker 12: to Ron harton role at That's what I what I've heard.
- 30:33Speaker 12: But he's kind of been a journeyman for the last
- 30:36Speaker 12: four years. I know he hasn't worked on it since college.
- 30:40Speaker 12: But with Brennan Schooler's size and speed and athleticism, if
- 30:44Speaker 12: he really worked on it, do you think that he
- 30:47Speaker 12: could have an impact at free safety? And you know
- 30:51Speaker 12: what you think the timeline would look like with that
- 30:53Speaker 12: if he were to really work on it.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Thanks guys, I'll take it off the air, Okay, Thanks Jeff.
- 30:57Speaker 7: I don't. I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 30:59Speaker 7: I mean it's to I don't know.
- 31:00Speaker 8: I would temper Jalen Hawkins a little bit, like I
- 31:02Speaker 8: think he's a good player, and you know, they seem
- 31:04Speaker 8: interested in him, especially like even like on punt team,
- 31:07Speaker 8: like he's getting some.
- 31:07Speaker 10: Well he's a core special team.
- 31:09Speaker 8: Yeah, he's a reps it like personal protector.
- 31:11Speaker 7: So I do think he's in the mix.
- 31:13Speaker 8: But I would pump the brakes on thinking he's gonna
- 31:15Speaker 8: be in there with Peppers and Dugger and that's our
- 31:17Speaker 8: three now, Like I I still have made that leap
- 31:19Speaker 8: in for Schooler, I don't.
- 31:20Speaker 7: I don't think that.
- 31:21Speaker 2: That's what they're trying him.
- 31:22Speaker 12: Right.
- 31:23Speaker 8: Well, he's getting reps back there, and I think Mayo
- 31:25Speaker 8: talked a little bit.
- 31:25Speaker 7: About you know, you know.
- 31:27Speaker 8: You're in bind or you're blowing somebody out. You want
- 31:30Speaker 8: to give him a chance. But you know, he wasn't
- 31:32Speaker 8: really a safety in college. He was a receiver a
- 31:35Speaker 8: little bit, and I mean he's he's a.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Special so I saw something to do you agree with that, Schooler?
- 31:40Speaker 9: Yeah, I would just say that Jabriel Peppers and Kyle
- 31:43Speaker 9: Duggar are you're starting safeties?
- 31:45Speaker 5: No, there's no doubt about it.
- 31:46Speaker 2: They just the depth there, They just going to get hurt.
- 31:48Speaker 9: Yeah, But I think this idea of the Duran her
- 31:52Speaker 9: Harmon role in that third safety, I'm not sure if
- 31:56Speaker 9: it's necessarily going to be that cut and dry, because
- 31:59Speaker 9: I guess it is that like Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones
- 32:02Speaker 9: and those guys are gonna playing out.
- 32:03Speaker 2: That's what I did.
- 32:04Speaker 5: You see a lot of Jonathan a lot of Jonathan
- 32:06Speaker 5: Jones totally, and it was dependent on obviously, it's dependent
- 32:11Speaker 5: on the offensive personnel, and you know, the if there's
- 32:16Speaker 5: three wides to one side or whatever, it sort of
- 32:18Speaker 5: takes the back corner and put But he was like
- 32:21Speaker 5: back as the loan safety, like in that kind of
- 32:24Speaker 5: a role. And I started thinking exactly the way Evan
- 32:27Speaker 5: just said, it's gonna be Dougner and it's gonna be
- 32:30Speaker 5: Pepper's Jay, Like, this is kind of like another version
- 32:35Speaker 5: of that offensive line thing. We're gonna find our best
- 32:37Speaker 5: five offensive Lineman's Jalen Hawkins better than Marcus Jones and
- 32:41Speaker 5: Jonathan Jones probably not, So those are the five that
- 32:45Speaker 5: are going to be out there. Well, maybe we can
- 32:47Speaker 5: move because I think that They've tried a lot of
- 32:49Speaker 5: reps with Marcus Jones on the outside just to see
- 32:52Speaker 5: what it looks like, and Jonathan Jones is sort of
- 32:55Speaker 5: moving around. I think they're going to try to figure
- 32:57Speaker 5: it out with those five guys. Obviously was being the fifth.
- 33:01Speaker 5: Hell yeah, and they'll be moving around in different roles. Yeah,
- 33:05Speaker 5: because those are the best five defensive backs.
- 33:08Speaker 9: No, they keep talking and harping about how they can
- 33:11Speaker 9: disguise with Peppers and Dugger because both they're pretty similar players.
- 33:15Speaker 9: So that allows you to you know, one can buzz
- 33:17Speaker 9: into the box or the other can do it on
- 33:19Speaker 9: another down, and you can kind of switch off which
- 33:21Speaker 9: way the rotation is going, and teams can't tee off
- 33:25Speaker 9: on that. It kind of reminds me of the Bills
- 33:26Speaker 9: with Hide and Bloyer a little bit, and you know,
- 33:29Speaker 9: different types of players, but same type of idea where
- 33:32Speaker 9: on any given play, one would be a free, one
- 33:34Speaker 9: would be in the box, and it can just kind
- 33:35Speaker 9: of rotate. And into Paul's point, I don't feel like
- 33:39Speaker 9: that third safety is necessarily going to be as big
- 33:42Speaker 9: of a deal because you're gonna have the Joneses, you know,
- 33:45Speaker 9: being in someone who's going to be inside in that
- 33:47Speaker 9: nickel spot, and if there's going to be anybody that's
- 33:49Speaker 9: going to rotate up top that's maybe not expected. I
- 33:53Speaker 9: would think it would be one of those guys.
- 33:54Speaker 8: It's one of my favorite things to kind of watch
- 33:56Speaker 8: in a practice, and everybody wonders about how much carryover
- 33:59Speaker 8: there's going to be with the check defense, and you
- 34:01Speaker 8: know how they're going to continue to spin the dial.
- 34:03Speaker 8: I mean one rep in particular, Paul where it did.
- 34:05Speaker 8: It looked like Jonathan Jones is the middlefield safety. It
- 34:08Speaker 8: looked like I think Dougger was a linebacker, and then
- 34:10Speaker 8: right at the snap, Jones comes start charging in the slot.
- 34:13Speaker 8: Dougger drops out, and it's a lot of those post
- 34:15Speaker 8: snap things that all of a sudden, you know, change
- 34:17Speaker 8: it from middlefield open to middlefield closed and you know, complications.
- 34:21Speaker 8: So I think they're going to continue to spin the dial.
- 34:23Speaker 5: But funny when you see it, like you look and
- 34:24Speaker 5: you're like, did they just no, I probably didn't really
- 34:28Speaker 5: see it, And then like you wait to see it
- 34:30Speaker 5: like three four times and you're like, okay, so this
- 34:32Speaker 5: is something clearly they're trying to do that's a little different.
- 34:34Speaker 5: And then you try to watch and see things like
- 34:37Speaker 5: Mike just explained, you know, showed a changing off.
- 34:40Speaker 8: And right right at the snap, and I mean EXAs
- 34:43Speaker 8: done plenty of in the past, so's he can play.
- 34:45Speaker 8: You know, it's not it's it's it's not the kind
- 34:48Speaker 8: of thing that that is so foreign to everybody. But
- 34:50Speaker 8: you know, opposing defense, our offenses are going to look
- 34:53Speaker 8: at that, you know, and they and then that's what
- 34:54Speaker 8: they're continuing to try to do. Spin the dial, confused guys,
- 34:57Speaker 8: put guys in different spots. I haven't felt though that
- 34:59Speaker 8: it's been overly aggressive like it. It seemed like Steve
- 35:02Speaker 8: Belichick was way more spin the dial guys dropping guys
- 35:06Speaker 8: come in that kind of stuff and practice. I don't know,
- 35:08Speaker 8: I might be maybe maybe a little bit reading too
- 35:10Speaker 8: much though.
- 35:11Speaker 5: It was interesting today when they first went to team
- 35:14Speaker 5: there was a lot of sort of secondary guys in
- 35:18Speaker 5: the secondary Uh. You know Marco Wilson, who I thought
- 35:21Speaker 5: actually had a pretty active day today. And he's a
- 35:24Speaker 5: guy that we don't really talk a lot about, but
- 35:26Speaker 5: he's not a rookie. He's like a fifty year guy.
- 35:29Speaker 5: I think he was in Arizona.
- 35:31Speaker 9: He's played a little bit in the league, So he's
- 35:34Speaker 9: got a little experience in the league.
- 35:36Speaker 5: I think he struggled, you know, for the most part,
- 35:38Speaker 5: until today. I thought he showed up a little bit,
- 35:41Speaker 5: made a nice pass deflection on he picked up quickout.
- 35:44Speaker 2: He definitely scooped.
- 35:46Speaker 7: Was that Harris that that fumbled this?
- 35:47Speaker 5: I don't know if it was that a fumble in
- 35:49Speaker 5: the exchange or someone looked it was an exchange. Yeah,
- 35:53Speaker 5: I was kind of field level. This was one of
- 35:55Speaker 5: the times I kind of wish I was up with
- 35:56Speaker 5: the know it all up, in the know it all
- 35:58Speaker 5: ramp that you guys are up.
- 36:02Speaker 8: It was hard to tell with some of the snaps
- 36:04Speaker 8: because it was you know, especially like you mentioned.
- 36:05Speaker 5: With May, some they just you know, there was there
- 36:08Speaker 5: was some low ones today, whereas but Wilson was with
- 36:11Speaker 5: Alex Austin and a couple of lesser known guys like
- 36:15Speaker 5: Mikey Victor was out there a little bit murky.
- 36:18Speaker 9: Yeah, Marco Wilson and Alex Austin feel like they're kind
- 36:22Speaker 9: of in a competition to be that that third outside corner. Yeah,
- 36:25Speaker 9: you know, it's gonna be one of the Joneses and
- 36:27Speaker 9: in Gonzo, and there's gonna be one other guy that's
- 36:30Speaker 9: gonna be a regular contributor in that room. Isaiah Bolden's
- 36:34Speaker 9: probably in that conversation.
- 36:36Speaker 2: That group as well.
- 36:37Speaker 9: Yeah, and they've been giving some opportunities to those three
- 36:40Speaker 9: guys in almost like a rotation with Gonzo and the Joneses.
- 36:43Speaker 9: Like every once in a while it's Aux Austin, sometimes
- 36:45Speaker 9: it's Marco Wilson, sometimes it's Bolden. So that that seems
- 36:49Speaker 9: to me like the guy that's gonna come on the
- 36:51Speaker 9: field maybe more than than like a Jalen Hawkins would
- 36:54Speaker 9: be like a bigger outside corner to kick the one
- 36:57Speaker 9: of the Joneses back inside so that they can get
- 36:59Speaker 9: some again in certain matchups, you know, week one against
- 37:02Speaker 9: t Higgins, that type of thing.
- 37:03Speaker 7: What'd you guys see for the offense?
- 37:05Speaker 2: Took a lap?
- 37:05Speaker 7: Did you catch that?
- 37:06Speaker 8: It seemed like it was a miscommunication, like Ron personnel,
- 37:08Speaker 8: the whole offense.
- 37:09Speaker 5: They had too many guys in the hot Yeah.
- 37:11Speaker 10: Yeah, looked like maybe Jalen poll.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Coaches take a laugh with him.
- 37:14Speaker 7: I do think it was.
- 37:16Speaker 2: And Fresno, what's up?
- 37:17Speaker 13: Speed's going on? It sounds like it was a tough
- 37:21Speaker 13: day yesterday, but got your guys great coverage. So you're
- 37:24Speaker 13: kicking ass as usual. Thanks for all that.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Sure.
- 37:28Speaker 13: I got a question about like assessing stuff in training camp,
- 37:32Speaker 13: like when you're seeing when you're trying to actest individual
- 37:35Speaker 13: players or maybe even whole personnel groups, like like offensive line.
- 37:39Speaker 13: It just seems like it would be kind of challenging
- 37:41Speaker 13: to know who's who's really doing well as opposed to
- 37:43Speaker 13: just kind of doing okay against what you got on
- 37:46Speaker 13: the other side. Like Marcus Jones, for example, I'd love
- 37:50Speaker 13: to see him improved because I'm not sure what his
- 37:52Speaker 13: feeling is yet, but like when he does well against
- 37:54Speaker 13: these receivers in camp, how enthusiastic can you be, like
- 37:59Speaker 13: when you don't know how it would look going up
- 38:01Speaker 13: against better players, or like vice versa, somebody beats Marcus Jones. Well,
- 38:05Speaker 13: if I don't know how good Marcus Jones is, you.
- 38:08Speaker 7: Don't know anything. Speak, You know nothing right, nothing tells
- 38:11Speaker 7: you anything.
- 38:11Speaker 5: And that's why we just kind of try not to
- 38:14Speaker 5: necessarily make these sweeping evaluations of what it means going
- 38:19Speaker 5: forward to just kind of report on what was seeing.
- 38:21Speaker 5: It's just in the moment.
- 38:22Speaker 8: And these guys who are consistently showing up, I mean,
- 38:24Speaker 8: any any single rep you can easily like go well
- 38:28Speaker 8: with this, and but that right at the end of
- 38:30Speaker 8: the day, you just got to tally up.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Here maybe an example of that. But yeah, the yah.
- 38:33Speaker 5: But first couple of days we were sort of talking
- 38:35Speaker 5: about Jalen Rager, Jalen Rager, Jalen Rager making these plays,
- 38:39Speaker 5: and I think Evan was the one who said, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 5: we've kind of seen this from Jalen Rager in the
- 38:42Speaker 5: NFL before. Let's see what happens when the pads come on.
- 38:45Speaker 7: Where was he today?
- 38:46Speaker 5: Jalen Rager drop? Jalen Rager can completely you know, like
- 38:49Speaker 5: it wasn't as good certainly today as it was when
- 38:53Speaker 5: the pats.
- 38:53Speaker 2: But you can't get indicators from some of these practices.
- 38:56Speaker 2: And we've had in the past with Malcolm Butler or
- 38:59Speaker 2: Randall Gay. New guy comes in and wow, he's showing
- 39:02Speaker 2: up and all of a sudden he's getting inserted.
- 39:05Speaker 5: With I've been looking for that. I haven't really seen a.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Lot this year, but you know, guys all of a
- 39:09Speaker 2: sudden get inserted with the starters and they're starting to
- 39:11Speaker 2: get wraps and that means something.
- 39:13Speaker 5: And when they okay, they see you do so yeah,
- 39:16Speaker 5: I mean I see you getting reps with the big boys. Deuse.
- 39:19Speaker 2: That kind of thing means something. But strike you know
- 39:21Speaker 2: what Spee is saying, there's always a.
- 39:23Speaker 8: Yab but you guy's going to teach me with all
- 39:24Speaker 8: of this, right, Well, it's like a one on one.
- 39:26Speaker 8: Oh he toasted Christian zalez No. This is really hard
- 39:28Speaker 8: on the TVs though, and one on one. You know,
- 39:30Speaker 8: it's like there's always something. But I would just say,
- 39:33Speaker 8: I got a question the mailbag about you DFA, like
- 39:35Speaker 8: who's standing at I'm like, I don't really have one
- 39:36Speaker 8: right now, That's.
- 39:37Speaker 5: What I meant, Like, I haven't really seen a guy,
- 39:40Speaker 5: you know, like when you sing the song one of
- 39:42Speaker 5: these things doesn't belong. Malcolm Butler was one of these
- 39:44Speaker 5: things that didn't belong in twenty fourteen. I haven't really
- 39:47Speaker 5: seen any of those guys yet. When those guys have
- 39:50Speaker 5: been out there, there's been a lot of them out there. Yeah,
- 39:52Speaker 5: you know, like I said, it was a well, I
- 39:54Speaker 5: didn't know Spet was still there.
- 39:55Speaker 13: Sorry, I'm sorry, but maybe instead of looking at I
- 39:58Speaker 13: appreciate the comp station, but maybe instead of like looking
- 40:01Speaker 13: at individual players, is their merit to instead taking a
- 40:04Speaker 13: bigger picture look at stuff like, hey, how much are
- 40:08Speaker 13: people successfully adapting to whatever new schemes or concepts are
- 40:13Speaker 13: being put in? And I wonder, I mean, like, is
- 40:14Speaker 13: that a different way of looking at it? Like that
- 40:17Speaker 13: that's something that you look for.
- 40:19Speaker 9: Yeah, I feel like for me, it's just it's practice
- 40:22Speaker 9: to practice. I try to look at different things, because,
- 40:25Speaker 9: let's face it, there's no way that you can watch
- 40:27Speaker 9: all twenty two guys in a live rep without the
- 40:31Speaker 9: ability to go back and rewatch it on a practice
- 40:34Speaker 9: film and act like you saw everything.
- 40:37Speaker 10: So yesterday was the first day in.
- 40:39Speaker 9: PAD, so my binoculars were up and I was watching
- 40:41Speaker 9: just the line of scrimmage to watch the guy the
- 40:44Speaker 9: big guys up front. Today I looked a little bit
- 40:47Speaker 9: more at the receivers again. But it's one of those
- 40:50Speaker 9: things where you, you know, do have to kind of
- 40:52Speaker 9: pick a little bit, you know, when we go to
- 40:54Speaker 9: joint practices, like Douce often watches the defense and I'll
- 40:56Speaker 9: watch the offense, and that way you're you're a little
- 40:59Speaker 9: bit more narrowed and what you're trying to look at
- 41:02Speaker 9: instead of trying to digest it all. Because if you
- 41:04Speaker 9: try to go in there and watch every try to
- 41:07Speaker 9: think you know everything, like you saw everything, you're gonna
- 41:09Speaker 9: get overwhelmed, so you're not gonna see anything at that point.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Thanks space. And a lot of times we don't know
- 41:14Speaker 2: what we're watching, yell.
- 41:15Speaker 5: That's my bigger part, you know, like to see how
- 41:18Speaker 5: the offense is. Like, I mean, you don't know exactly
- 41:21Speaker 5: what's going on in every play, right, or what's supposed
- 41:23Speaker 5: to be going Yeah, you could tell, like I use
- 41:26Speaker 5: that phrase like for that looked normal. Oh that didn't
- 41:29Speaker 5: look right, you know, like you know, there are times
- 41:33Speaker 5: when they actually complete passes and you say, yeah, that
- 41:37Speaker 5: didn't look like that was designed to be like that,
- 41:39Speaker 5: you know, and you could tell it's late in the
- 41:41Speaker 5: down and yeah, oh yeah, like a quarterback will run
- 41:44Speaker 5: around for you know, three minutes and one which may
- 41:48Speaker 5: have happened today.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:52Speaker 5: You know.
- 41:52Speaker 8: One guy just highlight two along these lines is Austin Hooper,
- 41:54Speaker 8: who's a guy who's played in this system before. And
- 41:56Speaker 8: I feel like there's been a handful of plays where
- 41:58Speaker 8: it's just like he knows what he's doing, he's in
- 42:00Speaker 8: the right place, Jacoby knows he's going to be there.
- 42:01Speaker 7: There's just been a couple of those.
- 42:03Speaker 8: Kind of trust plays that I'm hopeful that that's a
- 42:05Speaker 8: sign of as the rest of these guys try to
- 42:07Speaker 8: get to the offense that you know works. And I mean,
- 42:10Speaker 8: it's just nice hearing a lot of these guys like
- 42:11Speaker 8: Austin Hooper say this system works, you know, and he
- 42:16Speaker 8: had that ready.
- 42:17Speaker 14: You know.
- 42:18Speaker 8: They they have coaches installing the system that know what
- 42:21Speaker 8: they're doing, and everybody believes that they know what they're doing,
- 42:24Speaker 8: whereas we know what happened a couple of years ago
- 42:26Speaker 8: when they're trying to install a system that they don't
- 42:27Speaker 8: know what they're doing. The players do and they're saying,
- 42:29Speaker 8: you guys aren't doing this right. You know, there's none
- 42:31Speaker 8: of that, And that's a bit.
- 42:32Speaker 9: That's the other thing what Jacoby Eber said to not
- 42:34Speaker 9: to take away from him clearly being the better quarterback
- 42:37Speaker 9: so far in these at least more competitive practices. But
- 42:40Speaker 9: he started eleven games in this offense two years ago,
- 42:44Speaker 9: and he's thirty one years old and he's been in
- 42:46Speaker 9: the league for a while, forty eight starts in the
- 42:48Speaker 9: in his career. Overall, of course, he's ahead of where
- 42:51Speaker 9: Drake may is at this point. If he wasn't then
- 42:53Speaker 9: Drake maybe sign what are we doing? So you know,
- 42:57Speaker 9: he definitely looks like he has more of those Paul plays,
- 43:01Speaker 9: those Sunday plays. Today, you hit one to Hunter Henry
- 43:05Speaker 9: on a nice post route right over Josh Blood so
- 43:08Speaker 9: where I was like that to the Paul's falls thing,
- 43:10Speaker 9: and now I think of it all the time that
- 43:12Speaker 9: that was a play looked right, you know kJ Osborne
- 43:14Speaker 9: crossing route. Towards the end of practice, that was a
- 43:17Speaker 9: play And you can see Jacob Brissett just knows where
- 43:20Speaker 9: the answers are a little bit quicker and a little
- 43:23Speaker 9: bit more decisive.
- 43:24Speaker 5: And I was very happy today at the very end
- 43:25Speaker 5: of practice, first percent than May like one play to
- 43:29Speaker 5: sort of set up a field goal, and I could
- 43:31Speaker 5: tell that the field goals were good. That was right
- 43:33Speaker 5: by them. Both each kicker kicked one.
- 43:41Speaker 15: Hey yeah, are we doing guys a long time?
- 43:43Speaker 16: Hello?
- 43:43Speaker 8: Jerry?
- 43:45Speaker 15: Hey, hey yeah good? Can you hear me? Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 15: Just got a couple of comments and I love to
- 43:54Speaker 15: hear you guys respond. First, I completely agree with you
- 43:58Speaker 15: Fred and Paul there about Drake May's development. I think that, yeah,
- 44:03Speaker 15: they're simulating pressure for him so that you know, he
- 44:06Speaker 15: can learn from those mistakes later on when they restimulate
- 44:09Speaker 15: that pressure. That's why he's probably working with the second
- 44:11Speaker 15: and third team, and then hopefully, you know, by and
- 44:14Speaker 15: the training camp, he's working with the first team. And
- 44:17Speaker 15: then as far as the defense will borrow more out,
- 44:20Speaker 15: I'm hoping him, Man, it's gonna step up. And Nicauality
- 44:25Speaker 15: and number ninety nine I forget his name, yeah, and
- 44:28Speaker 15: I think I forget his name, but yeah, I'm hoping
- 44:30Speaker 15: those guys can step up to that.
- 44:31Speaker 3: We can still.
- 44:31Speaker 15: Simulate pressure on the past, pressure from top of you, Mike, hopefully. Yeah,
- 44:38Speaker 15: the defense is still good. And then just two other things.
- 44:42Speaker 15: I was looking at plays randomly on YouTube and Tom
- 44:46Speaker 15: Brady's Leaf Liquor Real came up, and I was like, man, yeah,
- 44:49Speaker 15: that'd be great if they installed into this office, because
- 44:51Speaker 15: I think it'd be really good way of just changing
- 44:53Speaker 15: it up and you know, being deceptive and getting those
- 44:55Speaker 15: trunk plays. And then finally I was looking at the
- 44:58Speaker 15: twenty twenty five free agent lists and looking at the
- 45:01Speaker 15: tackles there, like, if we're going to have all this money,
- 45:04Speaker 15: I think Tristan Wurriz is like the only guy I want,
- 45:07Speaker 15: you know, out of the tackles to pick up and like,
- 45:09Speaker 15: I assuming we're not going to get a wide receiver
- 45:11Speaker 15: because he never really have UH during free agency. I
- 45:14Speaker 15: think we should draft lu for Burdon if we're in
- 45:16Speaker 15: that draft rings because I got this team was like
- 45:18Speaker 15: at least seven wins. I haven't had a floor four
- 45:21Speaker 15: because that's what we did last year. And then, like
- 45:23Speaker 15: Jakobe said, this offense is going to be better. This
- 45:25Speaker 15: team should be better than this year. I mean I
- 45:28Speaker 15: need one more win that five. I mean Drake May
- 45:31Speaker 15: gets some playing time. I got the next roughly seven wins.
- 45:33Speaker 15: I'm thinking we should draft Lou for Bergli year goes.
- 45:36Speaker 2: All right, Thanks, Jerry, appreciate a lot of a lot
- 45:38Speaker 2: of stuff there.
- 45:39Speaker 7: There's a lot of stuff there.
- 45:41Speaker 9: Let's let's talk about Keon White because I do feel
- 45:43Speaker 9: like there's some buzz about Keon White.
- 45:45Speaker 2: And I think you're not going to be Christian Barmore.
- 45:48Speaker 9: Girodd said in the spring that he was one player
- 45:50Speaker 9: that they felt like had stood out in that portion
- 45:52Speaker 9: of the offseason. And I still don't necessarily see the
- 45:57Speaker 9: one on one pass rusher out of him. I think
- 45:59Speaker 9: he's disruptive and he made some plays today and team
- 46:02Speaker 9: against the run and yesterday, but in terms of like
- 46:07Speaker 9: just one on one pass rush off the edge, not
- 46:09Speaker 9: necessarily expecting much out of that. But he's a disruptive guy.
- 46:14Speaker 9: I'm just not sure he's a productive guy, if that
- 46:16Speaker 9: makes sense. Like he might be causing a lot of chaos,
- 46:18Speaker 9: but I don't know if he's necessarily gonna be the
- 46:20Speaker 9: finisher that a judon is. If he is someone that
- 46:24Speaker 9: has to play a little bit more.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like.
- 46:26Speaker 8: We're already have Anthony Jennings right, Like that's kind of
- 46:28Speaker 8: what I'm afraid of. It's great, he's a big, strong
- 46:30Speaker 8: Guyah's stout, but he's not gonna bring anything against the past,
- 46:34Speaker 8: That's what That's what I'm worried about. And he listed
- 46:37Speaker 8: off guys. You know, there's no one who can do
- 46:39Speaker 8: what Christian Barmore does. That what made Christian Barmore so
- 46:43Speaker 8: special and needed by this team. And you know, as
- 46:46Speaker 8: much as we want to say Daniel al Quale did fine,
- 46:49Speaker 8: you know when he replaced Barmore two years ago, it's
- 46:52Speaker 8: a significant drop off. And when you don't have any
- 46:54Speaker 8: pressure up the middle and you don't have anyone off
- 46:56Speaker 8: the edge. I mean, you're gonna ask josh U j
- 46:58Speaker 8: this year to be like that's all you John, Like you
- 47:00Speaker 8: got to go get the quarterback this year.
- 47:01Speaker 5: It's a huge You guys are telling me that the
- 47:03Speaker 5: one on ones are being controlled by the offensive line. Yeah,
- 47:07Speaker 5: well that the flip side of that tells me that,
- 47:10Speaker 5: you know, without Judon in bar More, potentially you're gonna
- 47:16Speaker 5: have to scheme up your pressure and I don't like that.
- 47:19Speaker 5: I don't like having to rely on that.
- 47:21Speaker 9: It's really hard to do on early downs too. Especially
- 47:24Speaker 9: they were able to scheme up pressure last year on
- 47:26Speaker 9: third down, but first and second down you can't really
- 47:29Speaker 9: do because you got to play the run and play
- 47:30Speaker 9: action and all this other stuff. So you're not going
- 47:33Speaker 9: to like bring the house on first and ten. It's
- 47:35Speaker 9: just not really what it's designed to do. So if
- 47:38Speaker 9: you don't have a guy like a bar More, like
- 47:40Speaker 9: a Judon that can just beat the dude in front
- 47:42Speaker 9: of him on a four man rush on first down,
- 47:44Speaker 9: then you just have no pass rush on first down.
- 47:47Speaker 2: You can, you know, you can run blitz every once
- 47:49Speaker 2: in a while, but you get burned that way too.
- 47:51Speaker 8: It's just in some ways I feel like this is
- 47:52Speaker 8: going to be if this continues along, and I'm hopeful
- 47:55Speaker 8: that Judon gets worked out and bar Moore, I mean,
- 47:57Speaker 8: I don't really hope he can return this I mean,
- 47:59Speaker 8: I hope he could return this year, but I'm not
- 48:00Speaker 8: anticipating he's going to be back this year.
- 48:02Speaker 7: I just am making peace with that.
- 48:04Speaker 8: But I just I I hope that they're able to
- 48:07Speaker 8: generate enough passwords because it's such an interesting experience where
- 48:10Speaker 8: like I kind of always initially and getting into football,
- 48:13Speaker 8: I believe in the front seven. You know, I believe
- 48:14Speaker 8: you've got a great front seven. It's gonna make up
- 48:16Speaker 8: for deficiencies in the back. And now I kind of
- 48:19Speaker 8: see completely the opposite. I see a secondary that that
- 48:21Speaker 8: I like that. You know, Christian Gonzalez is promising Jonathan Jones.
- 48:24Speaker 8: I like the two safeties. You know, Bentley's a tough player.
- 48:28Speaker 8: But up front, if you don't have the horses like this,
- 48:31Speaker 8: you know what I mean, is it going to be
- 48:32Speaker 8: Could it be terrible even with a good you know,
- 48:34Speaker 8: a secondary that you have that's you know what I'm
- 48:37Speaker 8: That's what I worry about.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Now, that's mine, that's Dylan's in Florida what's up, Dylan, Hey.
- 48:42Speaker 17: Guys, how you're doing good?
- 48:45Speaker 3: So I have two questions.
- 48:47Speaker 17: First, is Drake made bad reps really because of who's
- 48:52Speaker 17: around him? Like I know you guys mentioned earlier, but
- 48:55Speaker 17: let's say, is it the second team offensive line that's
- 48:58Speaker 17: failing him or is it really him making the bad
- 49:00Speaker 17: reps himself.
- 49:02Speaker 12: I think it's going to be the other way.
- 49:03Speaker 17: Where the first team offensive line, when he does make
- 49:06Speaker 17: good good reps, him performing well with them, but then
- 49:10Speaker 17: himself he's not performing well with the second team.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Also that hasn't really happened.
- 49:17Speaker 17: No, okay, So for this also, my second question was
- 49:20Speaker 17: is the scheme when you guys first were looking into
- 49:23Speaker 17: it in the off season spring, you guys talked a
- 49:25Speaker 17: lot about how what you thought the scheme was going
- 49:27Speaker 17: to be.
- 49:28Speaker 13: When you're out.
- 49:29Speaker 17: There, has the scheme been similar to what you thought
- 49:31Speaker 17: or it has it been a little different because of
- 49:33Speaker 17: the personnel and stuff like that.
- 49:36Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly what I thought. Thanks to this point, I'm
- 49:39Speaker 9: wondering if they're gonna do anything just to spice up
- 49:43Speaker 9: some of their their early down formations. But as of
- 49:46Speaker 9: right now, this is the Alex van Pelt, Kevin Stefanski
- 49:49Speaker 9: offense to a t you know, outside zone, pin poll,
- 49:53Speaker 9: some trap, like just exactly what I thought, strike system,
- 49:57Speaker 9: you know, different.
- 49:58Speaker 8: Things, you know, you know my strikes system is strike first,
- 50:02Speaker 8: strike hard, no mercy.
- 50:05Speaker 2: I like the lament.
- 50:08Speaker 9: I like you do wish that they would give Drake
- 50:11Speaker 9: May a couple of reps with the first team offense
- 50:14Speaker 9: in general, but especially the offensive line, because we talk
- 50:18Speaker 9: so much about the offensive line being a problem, and
- 50:20Speaker 9: now he's playing with guys six through ten or whatever
- 50:24Speaker 9: it is on the depth chart, when we already are
- 50:25Speaker 9: worried about one through five. So it's like when you
- 50:28Speaker 9: go down another rung of tackles, especially on this depth chart,
- 50:32Speaker 9: you're already a little dicey with Chuokes the corps for
- 50:34Speaker 9: and Kaden Wallace, and now you're giving him Maderien Lowe
- 50:36Speaker 9: and Calvin Anderson. If he went in there and he
- 50:39Speaker 9: had some more time and he was better protected, would
- 50:42Speaker 9: it look better?
- 50:42Speaker 10: Of course?
- 50:43Speaker 5: And I do think that that's been an issue. I
- 50:45Speaker 5: think the offensive line has been an issue. We've talked
- 50:47Speaker 5: about it every single day, So I do think that
- 50:49Speaker 5: that's part of it. But the more important thing to
- 50:54Speaker 5: me is the skill position guys that he's with are
- 50:57Speaker 5: regular guys because they don't really have Like these three
- 51:02Speaker 5: guys aren't separating themselves from everybody else. So it's not
- 51:06Speaker 5: like Kendrick Bourne in to Mario Douglas are clearly the
- 51:10Speaker 5: best two and we've seen them every day. It's you know,
- 51:13Speaker 5: it's Douglas a little bit and just starting to get
- 51:16Speaker 5: some competitive stuff against defense. But it's the two rookies.
- 51:22Speaker 5: It's Jalen Rager, it's Juju Smith Schuster, like, these are
- 51:26Speaker 5: all the guys Taekwon Thornton, these are all the guys
- 51:28Speaker 5: that Brissett's throwing too too. It's the same guys, you know,
- 51:32Speaker 5: and they're also for the most part, May is going
- 51:35Speaker 5: against secondary guys on defense.
- 51:38Speaker 2: So it's it's so.
- 51:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I do think that the offensive line has been
- 51:44Speaker 5: an issue for the offense, Like the quarterbacks specifically have
- 51:49Speaker 5: had some you know, difficulties getting passes off you know,
- 51:54Speaker 5: in rhythm. But I also think it's not just because
- 51:58Speaker 5: of who he's playing with, and that will be an issue.
- 52:01Speaker 5: I think Prisett's had issues with that too.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 52:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's why I think if it's point
- 52:06Speaker 5: at the very beginning of the show about I'd be
- 52:09Speaker 5: curious to see what May looks like in a game,
- 52:12Speaker 5: well when he can do whatever he wants, So when
- 52:15Speaker 5: the protection breaks down.
- 52:16Speaker 2: From from a Gerard Mayo and Alex Van Pelt perspective,
- 52:19Speaker 2: I'm sure they would love to see what May looks
- 52:22Speaker 2: like with the front, you know, one through five and
- 52:26Speaker 2: you know, everything being as it would be to start
- 52:29Speaker 2: the game. But how do you balance that? How do
- 52:31Speaker 2: you not disrespect Jacoby Brissett and say, hey, we're gonna
- 52:35Speaker 2: we're gonna let Drake May take the starting reps this game,
- 52:38Speaker 2: and then also risk not getting ready for the season.
- 52:41Speaker 2: I mean, it's a tough balance. Everybody wants to see that.
- 52:44Speaker 2: But he's got to show, he's got to earn that
- 52:47Speaker 2: he's going to show up Jacoby Brissett in practice before
- 52:51Speaker 2: he's going to get the right to be under center
- 52:55Speaker 2: with one through five and everything else, and that we're
- 52:58Speaker 2: far from that happening right now.
- 53:00Speaker 8: I think I think just the short term goal would
- 53:03Speaker 8: be David Andrews back, get him with Leverett, you know,
- 53:06Speaker 8: let May play with the true second string, who's you know,
- 53:09Speaker 8: been doing okay with the snaps, and you know, see
- 53:11Speaker 8: where it kind of goes from.
- 53:12Speaker 2: So at least he's a third string right.
- 53:14Speaker 8: Right right, just a baby step maybe for this weekend
- 53:16Speaker 8: when they get back in the pads.
- 53:18Speaker 9: Yeah, Brady was on one of I think he might
- 53:20Speaker 9: have been cowered, and he was talking about snapping the
- 53:23Speaker 9: ball into bad defenses and how his whole thing wasn't
- 53:26Speaker 9: necessarily about the execution or the result of the play,
- 53:29Speaker 9: It was did I run a play that could actually
- 53:31Speaker 9: work against this defense? Now we're talking about high level
- 53:36Speaker 9: stuff right when we start, when we start talking about
- 53:38Speaker 9: that kind of stuff. But the thing that I see
- 53:41Speaker 9: with Drake May right now is he's constantly, in my opinion,
- 53:45Speaker 9: reacting instead of instinctually anticipating what the defense is doing
- 53:51Speaker 9: to him. And because of that, he's a beat behind
- 53:54Speaker 9: on a lot of these things. And a lot of quarterbacks,
- 53:58Speaker 9: you know, they're they're they're they're the Bradys so and
- 54:00Speaker 9: I'm you know, quarterbacks lesser than him that run it
- 54:03Speaker 9: that kind of way. But a lot of these quarterbacks
- 54:06Speaker 9: nowadays that come from these spread systems, that played in
- 54:09Speaker 9: these wide open offenses in college, they don't play football
- 54:13Speaker 9: like that anymore. Like they don't play a timing in
- 54:15Speaker 9: rhythm based football brand of football anymore. So in some respects,
- 54:20Speaker 9: I kind of give Drake May some leash because you're
- 54:24Speaker 9: asking him to do something that he really didn't do
- 54:26Speaker 9: at North Carolina, like from the point of calling plays
- 54:29Speaker 9: in a huddle, to getting to the line of scrimmage,
- 54:32Speaker 9: to reading the defense, to all these different types of
- 54:34Speaker 9: things and then asking him to execute it in rhythm.
- 54:37Speaker 9: This is a learning curve for him. This is something
- 54:39Speaker 9: completely new for him and a lot of these guys,
- 54:42Speaker 9: you know, we talk about Josh Allen a lot on
- 54:44Speaker 9: this show. A lot of those guys early on in
- 54:46Speaker 9: their careers just kind of played football and they were
- 54:49Speaker 9: just superior athletes than the people out there. You know,
- 54:52Speaker 9: Patrick Mahomes said he couldn't read a defense until like
- 54:54Speaker 9: two or three years into his starting career in the NFL,
- 54:58Speaker 9: and he was just out there on pure talent, just
- 55:01Speaker 9: MVP of the league. Now, I'm not saying Drake May
- 55:03Speaker 9: is going to do that, but that element is not
- 55:06Speaker 9: what we're watching in these practices. We're watching the Brady
- 55:09Speaker 9: element of structure. Yeah, is this going to work against
- 55:13Speaker 9: the defense? And a lot of these plays that they're
- 55:15Speaker 9: running are kind of doomed from the start.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Chad's in Dallas. What's up, Chad? Chad?
- 55:22Speaker 11: Hey, how's it going.
- 55:24Speaker 2: We can hear you? Good?
- 55:26Speaker 11: Great? First off, love you man, Thank you for making
- 55:30Speaker 11: me a better person.
- 55:32Speaker 7: Very nice.
- 55:33Speaker 5: That sounded sarcastic.
- 55:35Speaker 11: No certain, No certain, not at all. You actually taught me.
- 55:38Speaker 11: You can't tell me how to seek. I take that
- 55:42Speaker 11: my personal life a lot.
- 55:43Speaker 2: I can't tell you how to think.
- 55:44Speaker 5: I can't. I can't tell people how to think. A
- 55:47Speaker 5: lot of people in the media will try to tell
- 55:49Speaker 5: you how to think. I'm not one of.
- 55:50Speaker 14: Them, Yes, sir, exactly. But I'm talking about the defense.
- 55:58Speaker 14: I feel like I don't know, maybe I'm all out proportions,
- 56:01Speaker 14: but I feel like everybody's.
- 56:03Speaker 11: Not seeing the big picture on defense. I'm extremely worried
- 56:06Speaker 11: about it.
- 56:08Speaker 14: Why I'm worried about it is because since even the
- 56:13Speaker 14: last year with Tom Brady, our defense hasn't stopped anybody. Good.
- 56:18Speaker 11: Yeah, we got we got stats on backup quarterbacks and
- 56:21Speaker 11: no name quarterbacks, and we get the stacks the stats,
- 56:25Speaker 11: and that makes us top five defense whatever every year
- 56:29Speaker 11: since then, but we haven't stopped nobody that truly matters.
- 56:32Speaker 11: So I don't understand why everybody just gloss and go
- 56:35Speaker 11: with the defense unless we just gonna stay defense just
- 56:38Speaker 11: truly doesn't matter in the league any anymore. And we
- 56:41Speaker 11: just got scored thirty five for every game. I understand,
- 56:44Speaker 11: but I don't understand how you can stay rookie cornerback
- 56:48Speaker 11: that broke that towards atl and still doesn't really know
- 56:52Speaker 11: the top this wide receivers tricks on the field, yet
- 56:56Speaker 11: we can have confidence in him, and then we got
- 56:59Speaker 11: thirty two. You'll defensive line.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Yeah, fair enough, thanks thanks to torn shoulder broken should
- 57:07Speaker 2: not torny right.
- 57:08Speaker 10: No, listen, he's he's talking about He's.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Side of the street. Paul worries about when you play
- 57:16Speaker 2: the better defenses, you know, the numbers go up.
- 57:19Speaker 5: But can I just say, like, yeah, like this is
- 57:22Speaker 5: a little defense of myself, Like I think the better
- 57:25Speaker 5: defenses in football feast off of bad offenses. That's where
- 57:29Speaker 5: their numbers are sort of generated. So they are where
- 57:31Speaker 5: they like whatever the whatever you want to call them,
- 57:33Speaker 5: top five, top ten, Yeah, that's where they That's where
- 57:36Speaker 5: they land in the league. Now, I would say the
- 57:39Speaker 5: last couple of years they have had an abnormal amount
- 57:42Speaker 5: of backup quarterbacks that they've played, and I don't think
- 57:45Speaker 5: that will be the case this year. But I don't
- 57:49Speaker 5: want to sit there and say, well, you know, kidsas
- 57:51Speaker 5: City has really got a good defense, and then that's
- 57:55Speaker 5: way better than the Patriots.
- 57:57Speaker 2: Well.
- 57:57Speaker 5: No, they played against the the inept Bronco and the
- 58:00Speaker 5: in Raiders twice. They had no offenses at all. So
- 58:04Speaker 5: a lot of teams, a lot of teams generate a
- 58:06Speaker 5: lot of gaudy stats against bad teams. Yeah, it's the
- 58:09Speaker 5: Patriots are not unique in that regard, right, And a.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Lot of in the best offenses are the best offenses
- 58:15Speaker 2: for a reason. There's very you know, everyone every once
- 58:18Speaker 2: in a while in a season, there's an elite defense,
- 58:22Speaker 2: like the Broncos back few years that year was that
- 58:25Speaker 2: was different, that was different. They would they got anyone.
- 58:27Speaker 9: We're almost going on in a decade, Yes, everybody, right,
- 58:30Speaker 9: the Ravens back in their day, you know, but those
- 58:33Speaker 9: are few and far between.
- 58:34Speaker 2: For the most part. The best offenses score points you
- 58:38Speaker 2: know against any.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Dese against defense.
- 58:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I'd say there's more really good offenses that are
- 58:43Speaker 8: there are really good defenses, you know, I said a
- 58:46Speaker 8: few weeks ago, it's like there's just a couple of
- 58:48Speaker 8: defenses that are truly like impact the game, you know,
- 58:51Speaker 8: and and consistently. And then there are other defense that
- 58:54Speaker 8: are opportunistic and at the right times they make their plays.
- 58:57Speaker 2: In today's NFL, the good defense are the ones that
- 59:00Speaker 2: don't beat themselves, you know, they make the offense work
- 59:04Speaker 2: for it. You know, in like Cleveland for example, Like no,
- 59:08Speaker 2: they it wasn't a good enough defense to carry them
- 59:11Speaker 2: to a super Bowl, but it was a good enough
- 59:13Speaker 2: defense where they were competitive in pretty much every game,
- 59:17Speaker 2: you know, despite not having the greatest offense. That's a
- 59:21Speaker 2: good defense in today's NFL.
- 59:23Speaker 9: Yeah, That's exactly how I look at it. It's not
- 59:25Speaker 9: that defense doesn't matter, It's just that I think our
- 59:27Speaker 9: expectations for what's a good defense needs to change. Like
- 59:30Speaker 9: you mentioned the Broncos, which was twenty fifteen, it's twenty
- 59:33Speaker 9: twenty four. And you mentioned Baltimore, which was twenty years ago.
- 59:37Speaker 9: Now right, those defenses, I don't know if the death
- 59:40Speaker 9: of that defense might have happened, Like we might not
- 59:42Speaker 9: see the Legion of Boom again, we might not see
- 59:46Speaker 9: an early two thousands Baltimore defense again. It had happened
- 59:50Speaker 9: once a decade, but it's I don't know if it's
- 59:52Speaker 9: gonna be a regular thing because of the way that
- 59:54Speaker 9: offensive offensive football has just taken off. So if you
- 59:57Speaker 9: can keep your offense in a game against a good quarterback,
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: and the hope is is that the offense is pulling
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: the rope a little bit stronger going forward than it
- 1:00:06Speaker 9: has the last couple of years to get you over
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: the top. But the Patriots are not going anywhere unless
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: their offense gets them there.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: And that's the lead.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: That's really been my larger point about the whole thing
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: is not telling you how good, bad, or indifferent the
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: Patriots defense is. Some think it's better than I do,
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: I'll admit, but that's to me. The bottom line is
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: if you're going to be any good, Like someone called
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: in I think earlier in camp and said, if they
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: can just score two or three times a game, they
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: can win. No, you can't. You can't win scoring fourteen, seventeen,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: twenty one points every game. You can't win like that
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: all the time. You can win games here and there
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: like that. Yeah, you can go four and thirteen like that,
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: but you're not going thirteen and four scoring two or
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: three times.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I mean last year, you would have won two or
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: three more games than you did. But again, you were
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: a lot of those games where you kept a team
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: under ten or less points. It's because they didn't have
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: a quarterback that game, you know, like the Jets or
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: well two of them will back up quarterbacks. Y, I'm
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: not Cleveland.
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: The Giants and the Colts, and the other one was
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: the Chargers in the pouring rain. Right, and listen, that
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: doesn't mean they didn't play good defense in those games.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: They did. They did play good defenses. They took bad
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: quarterbacks and made them look bad.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Right, but they only scored seven points.
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: Right, They could have won those games and been the
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: same team.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Yeah, if you ask, and.
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: Just feel like you know, you said the good offenses.
- 1:01:28Speaker 9: So we're talking about Kansas City, Miami and you know Buffalo,
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: like teams like that San Francisco, they have good stats
- 1:01:35Speaker 9: against everybody. They have good stats against everybody. And yeah,
- 1:01:38Speaker 9: maybe there's a game here and there where a team
- 1:01:40Speaker 9: has a really good game plan or just outplays them
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: that day and their offense doesn't score thirty five. But
- 1:01:46Speaker 9: I just find me a defense in today's NFL that
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: consistently shuts down all the good offense, it doesn't exist.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: And then in the fourth quarter when it gets crunched time,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: nobody stops anybody. It just seems like, you know, yeah,
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: last team with the ball.
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: It's just a bar that I feel like we need to.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: All right, let's take a break. We're at the halfway point.

- 1:03:26Speaker 16: After a quick hiatus, Teas and Chris back with the
- 1:03:29Speaker 16: PU halftime show. Guys Training Camp. Chris was a day six,
- 1:03:33Speaker 16: Day seven, Day six today, A quick quick debrief from
- 1:03:38Speaker 16: our point of view, what we've seen, what we're surprised by.
- 1:03:42Speaker 16: I'm gonna start first. It's first couple of days. It's
- 1:03:45Speaker 16: been a little rusty, but the receivers, I think we
- 1:03:47Speaker 16: got a bit of a position battle here. Baker have
- 1:03:51Speaker 16: been the kind of hit the ground running, don't you
- 1:03:53Speaker 16: think I do?
- 1:03:54Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 1:03:54Speaker 19: I mean Baker the last two prizes Day five, especially yesterday,
- 1:03:59Speaker 19: I mean he had the play the day went up,
- 1:04:00Speaker 19: got one, brought it down there. The crowd was just unbelievable,
- 1:04:06Speaker 19: loves it. They are eating up the rookies and Jalen Polk.
- 1:04:10Speaker 19: I mean every time he catches the pass, he runs
- 1:04:12Speaker 19: at the end zone and he's waving to the crowds,
- 1:04:14Speaker 19: come on, come on, and uh it just they're they're
- 1:04:18Speaker 19: really enjoying the environment. I think it's a whole different
- 1:04:21Speaker 19: world for them, really, so I think it goes a
- 1:04:24Speaker 19: long way for them mentally and also has players.
- 1:04:27Speaker 16: It's a new energy. The vibes are new. But I
- 1:04:29Speaker 16: hate to be that guy, but vibes don't always mean wins.
- 1:04:32Speaker 16: So that we got the vibes going, but we got
- 1:04:35Speaker 16: see on field results.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Chris.
- 1:04:36Speaker 16: As i've been here, it's this training camp number six
- 1:04:38Speaker 16: for me, I think, and what number two for number
- 1:04:41Speaker 16: two for you. What I've learned is you don't really
- 1:04:44Speaker 16: know anything until those joint practices. I guess the preseason games,
- 1:04:47Speaker 16: but you know, the preseason games have changed so much.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: I'm excity for the joint practices.
- 1:04:50Speaker 16: The offensive line has looked a little shaky to me,
- 1:04:53Speaker 16: and I feel like you can't really practice handoffs or
- 1:04:56Speaker 16: run the run game and training camp. So I'm really
- 1:04:59Speaker 16: just waiting for August their team to see how we
- 1:05:00Speaker 16: do against the Eagles.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll be a good one.
- 1:05:02Speaker 19: I mean, realistically, I think that'll be a great competition
- 1:05:05Speaker 19: for the old line. But the on line had an
- 1:05:06Speaker 19: okay day yesterday. Obviously David Andrews was out for certain reasons.
- 1:05:11Speaker 19: But they're trying to find their find their find their
- 1:05:15Speaker 19: roles there and trying to see where they want to
- 1:05:17Speaker 19: fit their fit their guys like Calvin Anderson right now
- 1:05:20Speaker 19: at that right tackle, and I think, who's that guard yesterday?
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: Is it? I think it was so? I think I
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: think it's so so it sounds right.
- 1:05:29Speaker 19: But the on line is looking pretty good. They open
- 1:05:31Speaker 19: up some holes for Antonio and mare so we'll see
- 1:05:34Speaker 19: what happens. They're also good to see Antonio back out
- 1:05:36Speaker 19: there off the pup list and uh kind of back healthy,
- 1:05:39Speaker 19: physical is good.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: So what sucks about football? It's part of the game. Injuries.
- 1:05:44Speaker 16: There have been a lot bar more out unfortunately, and
- 1:05:47Speaker 16: definitely Pepper's is out for a little strange still is
- 1:05:50Speaker 16: in back. We've seen Kendrick out there, but he's obviously
- 1:05:53Speaker 16: not passing on the pup list. But you gotta use
- 1:05:55Speaker 16: that next man up mentality, and so who's gonna step up?
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: Who has stepped up? As anybody else stood out, I.
- 1:06:01Speaker 19: Would say what, this is gonna be a crazy comment,
- 1:06:04Speaker 19: but Jalen raiders really showing out for me in camp.
- 1:06:07Speaker 19: I mean he's created separation with defensive backs. He had
- 1:06:11Speaker 19: an O kDa yesterday I think it was day one
- 1:06:14Speaker 19: of camp. He just decided he was gonna be wide
- 1:06:17Speaker 19: receiver one and.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: That's what you need.
- 1:06:19Speaker 16: Though said, there's a position battle, and I do that guy,
- 1:06:22Speaker 16: But right now, nobody truly is sticking out. They're really
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: just like you know, I put them all equals. So
- 1:06:27Speaker 16: it's really just an even race for who's gonna make
- 1:06:29Speaker 16: that spot, and it's openly got Thornton's for year number three.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: I believe Rager just is coming back.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: So Thorn Thorn has something to prove.
- 1:06:37Speaker 10: He had a good day yesterday.
- 1:06:38Speaker 19: I think he knows, he knows that he's on the
- 1:06:41Speaker 19: fringe right now and he has to he has to
- 1:06:43Speaker 19: prove himself, especially in a very competitive wide receiver room. Again,
- 1:06:48Speaker 19: I think we already mentioned him, but Jayvon and Jalen
- 1:06:50Speaker 19: are just kind of carrying the the rookie weight right.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Now and Folk well to yep, yep, well that's what
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: Jayalen James, there you go.
- 1:06:58Speaker 16: Hey, we got Jayleen Hawkins in the back to Chris,
- 1:07:02Speaker 16: we gotta talk about this too. The quarterbacks, Yep, Drake May. Drake,
- 1:07:06Speaker 16: you give him through six days? Give a letter grade.
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: Through six days?
- 1:07:10Speaker 19: Well, let's stay six right now, but through five five days,
- 1:07:13Speaker 19: through five I would give him probably be at the moment,
- 1:07:16Speaker 19: I mean he needs I think he needs a little
- 1:07:20Speaker 19: more time with the ones. He's been working with the
- 1:07:22Speaker 19: twos for a little while. Now we'll see what kind
- 1:07:25Speaker 19: of happens there.
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: But I think.
- 1:07:26Speaker 19: Jacoby also, he's had a pretty good camp so far.
- 1:07:29Speaker 19: Yesterday it was his best day by far confidence wise.
- 1:07:32Speaker 19: He also looked excited. He was making great throws, especially
- 1:07:36Speaker 19: through the middle in tight coverages. So good day for
- 1:07:39Speaker 19: Jacoby there. I think they have a good competition on
- 1:07:41Speaker 19: their hands quarterback right now.
- 1:07:43Speaker 16: So so what I will say about the preseason games,
- 1:07:45Speaker 16: I hate them, but I'm excited for Drake May. For example,
- 1:07:49Speaker 16: last year CJ. Stroud and the Texans came to town.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: CJ.
- 1:07:52Speaker 16: Stroud looked awful, like there's no way this guy's gonna
- 1:07:55Speaker 16: be offensive rookie. It was Moe cunning In, and so
- 1:07:58Speaker 16: I think that's the one playercided to see how much
- 1:08:00Speaker 16: they let him do in the preseason game, but strap
- 1:08:04Speaker 16: up when he gets hit some pressure.
- 1:08:06Speaker 19: So it'll be entertaining for sure. I think that'll be
- 1:08:09Speaker 19: week one preseason is gonna be a big day for
- 1:08:11Speaker 19: Drake May and quite frankly, I mean we talk about
- 1:08:15Speaker 19: the guys over the top, like the one and two
- 1:08:17Speaker 19: were talking about three and four, Billy's happy and Joe Milton.
- 1:08:19Speaker 16: Yeah, so Chris, we got let's I kind of break
- 1:08:21Speaker 16: training camp up in the sessions that we're partway through
- 1:08:23Speaker 16: session two.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: Who think is gonna step up for the end of
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: session two?
- 1:08:26Speaker 19: The end of session two, I mean, Jayvon is making
- 1:08:30Speaker 19: a really really big push your VP of this. I
- 1:08:33Speaker 19: would say so as of right now, between the first
- 1:08:36Speaker 19: two days, I mean Sunday and Monday, it was just
- 1:08:38Speaker 19: all Javon.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: Love it though I agree with you.
- 1:08:41Speaker 16: All right, guys, back again Pe halftime show. We'll be
- 1:08:44Speaker 16: back more of the season coming up. Decided to be
- 1:08:46Speaker 16: back footballs finally here, let's get back to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: When someone accidentally threw away the school play costumes, oh No,
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: replacements were shipped with FedEx and with picture proof of delivery,
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: everyone could focus on the perfect opening night FedEx where
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: now it's next for residential delivery only.
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: And now great moments in.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: History.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Interesting. I want to check out this collar on the
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: at hotline. Roger, Oh, I thought you were going with
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: sweet Rogers and Foxborough. What's up, Roger?
- 1:09:21Speaker 17: Are you guys done?
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: It's Andy Hart.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: We haven't heard from you since the preseason.
- 1:09:30Speaker 8: We're just about to talk about fullback stances.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: We didn't Yeah, three point stances where you know.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: Did you take a wide stance with Bill yesterday?
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Talk?
- 1:09:40Speaker 12: You know that's my take, a little.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Wide stance with Bill though, Yeah, I imagine.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Unfortunately that's the best question you asked.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: That's another great moment from hardly great.
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: Anyway, we're back when he called in and I didn't
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: know he got me and it was clearly him. Oh,
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: just like that, it wasn't disguised, and you started to
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: you started to like make fun of me, and I.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Started talking with them. Paul started arguing with him. All right,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: A five five past five hundred is the ace ticket
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: houtline web radio at pages dot com is the email address.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Emails are coming in fast and furious, paulse appreciate. First
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: of all, I just want to thank our listeners and
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: our viewers. No matter what time we do this show,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: you're here. I really appreciate it. I do, I really do.
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: I think it's a testament to our drawing power.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Well, according to Mason, you're right. He says two questions
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: for you beasts, and I bring this up because it's
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: related to one of them. I was sitting I was
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: sitting at work trying to listen to anything training, can't
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: relate it, and regretfully decided that EEI live stream was
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: a good way to do that. And God was at
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: a miserable experience. Just three minutes of grown men complaining
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: to skies as thoughtful insights, followed by a ten minute
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: break and then the cycle repeats. And just brought it
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: up to say, you are, without a doubt, the best
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: podcast for anything Patriots related and genuinely one of my
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: favorite out there. Brings me to my first question, why
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: are these dweebs live streaming from practice and you guys aren't.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: And my actual question, I went to middle in high
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: school with Steel Chambers, was wondering if you've seen anything
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: of note there.
- 1:11:30Speaker 8: Some mop up linebacker time. I mean, he's bottom of
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: the depth chart right now. Someone a little bit out
- 1:11:34Speaker 8: there in the opportunity reps at the bottom. But at
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: the end of the crime, we did do the first
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: four days live.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so everything is video now. If it was just
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: audio would be a different thing. But as you even
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: the first four that we did, you know that we
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: have to turn the cameras off at a certain point,
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: and I just don't think the value is there to
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: do it every day. You know, we really can't say
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: everything that we're seeing. We're not allowed to talk about
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: formations and position grouping and things like that. It's better
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: to let these guys focus on practice, really absorb what's
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: going on, and then come in afterwards and talk about
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: what happens. So we do it on this show. We
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: do it with the Training Camp podcast, So like, if
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: you're looking for what happened at camp, you're gonna get it.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: You're gonna get it on like I said, this show
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: and the Training Camp Podcast, which we do after every
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: every practice. So I'm good with the way we do it.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: We will be live again though for the joint practice
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: with the Eagles, so we'll be live with thee yeah,
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: because that's a little bit different kind of a tent
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: pole it event if you will, along with the first
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: four days of practice. But you know, as you know Mason,
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: you get it all. We give everything we see after
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: each practice, So I'm good with the way we do it.
- 1:12:51Speaker 8: I mean, I would just say I think that this
- 1:12:52Speaker 8: is better for the coverage wise, I mean, and it's
- 1:12:55Speaker 8: I mean, it's kind of probably interesting to people that
- 1:12:57Speaker 8: like we don't like less. We're gonna sit like me
- 1:12:59Speaker 8: and Evan are near each other. We don't talking during practice.
- 1:13:01Speaker 8: Paul's down below, you know, And it's almost a good
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: way to go because now we come in here and
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: we can kind of share the overarching picture rather than
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: it's happening live. We're trying to interpret it. You kind
- 1:13:11Speaker 8: of miss the big picture. I mean, the podcast helps,
- 1:13:13Speaker 8: but I just feel like from a coverage standpoint, I'm
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: able to watch so much more, and we're all watching
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: different things, so we're all bringing separate things rather than
- 1:13:20Speaker 8: we're talking about the same thing. And you know, it's
- 1:13:22Speaker 8: just I get why people want it live, but I
- 1:13:24Speaker 8: do think there's gonna.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: Make a confession when I don't watch practice with you two.
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: And then when we come together afterwards, we usually wait
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: for the players to come out and they talk, and
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: the three of us will talk about.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Did you see this? Did you say?
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: I always feel better when I feel like Mike and
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: Evan saw most of the same things that I saw,
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: or you know, like yesterday, I didn't really watch much
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: of the one on ones. Evan was telling me some
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: of the one on one offensive line stuff, but for
- 1:13:48Speaker 5: the most part, everything else we kind of saw exactly
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: the same. Now, I don't know if that's because we
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: spend so much time together and we kind of see
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: things the same, or like we watched it from three
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: completely different vantage Bowling's and cameay with the same impressions.
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: My confession would be, it makes me feel better when
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: you guys see the same.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: Stuff valid like, you know, am I just seeing this?
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: Or do two people make too much of like Drake
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: may yesterday? Am I making too much of this?
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: Well?
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: You know, we all kind of got the same impression.
- 1:14:17Speaker 8: But there are certain people who are watching that practice
- 1:14:19Speaker 8: that would have that have seen a completely different practice
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: than the three of us have seen.
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: Which is why I feel better when we see it
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: the same even when we're not together.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: And again, I stress this, I think it's our obligation
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: responsibility to really tell our fans what we think is
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: going on, you know, without a filter, without a filter. Yeah,
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: we want no I mean, we want the team to win.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: It's better for our jobs if the Patriots win. And
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: we're hoping they win, and we're hoping Drake May is
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: the guy, and we're hoping, hoping, hoping for all these
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: good things. But we have to be honest. We have
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: to be honest, like about you know, it's not going
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: too well to okay, not that we think that it's
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: never going to go well again or you know, taking it.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: And I think that's what happens is when when people
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: we like it's a daily snapshot, and when people are
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: talking about it, like the Globes headline today really got
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: under the skin of no socks, right. It was like
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: signs that it's coming apart in Foxborough or something like
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: that one day, but it was a snapshot of that day.
- 1:15:25Speaker 5: Like I didn't think there was really anything wrong with it.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: That was what happened yesterday. Like if the snapshot is
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: now it's irreparably damaged in Foxboro, that's different. That's we
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: don't know what's gonna happens, the same thing.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: It's coming apart. Well, that's not inaccurate. Its signs that
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: it was a bad day. Okay, but that's a lot
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: different than it's coming apart. Because when it comes apart,
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: then you have to be you have to repair it
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: over time correct.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: And that's why I said, if if you say it's
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: irreparably damaged, then I would say that's taking it too far.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: Like I think Gerd Mayo could handle this thing with
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: with Matthew Judon really well and we'd all say, Wow,
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: I really like what Gerard did there. And I think
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: the team came together. It wasn't a rep' be damaged.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: He handled it well. It's a crisis, but I got
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: to deal with it. It's the first time to deal
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: with this.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: But I saw somebody with a blue checks has Has
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: Gerard Mayo lost the locker room?
- 1:16:19Speaker 10: I hope that was a jew.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: I mean, like, so two guys are disgruntled right now,
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: what about all the guys that are pleased as punch
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: because they just got extended.
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: Or that's the problem. This is what Bill used to
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: always argue against. But I think Bill was and I
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: think Bill was wrong, But Bill, Bill was wrong. He
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: he you know why, because it's the head coach's job
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: to make sure that people understand the message. No, not
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: everybody gets it right, And this is why he got it.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: This is why he got it.
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: This is why you didn't like. That's the head coach's
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: job to be in charge. And that's why I think,
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: you know now Bill's way around that was no one
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: got us, and I don't think that was the way
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: to do it. This is the opposite. They were able
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: to extend and re sign a lot of guys and
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: they chose not so far to do too. But part
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: of the you know, part of the trick is, like
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: I always say, with baseball gms at this time of year,
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: with the trade deadline, identify that the prospects that aren't
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: going to be great players and trade them for guys
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: that you think are going to be great players. That's
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: the hard part, identifying who gets it and who doesn't
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: and being right is the hard part.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: It is, and you know it's but it is a business,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: and not everyone's going to be happy. Uh. But because
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: two guys are disgruntled doesn't mean he's lost the locker round. No,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: that's so, I mean, come on, Blue check my hysterics.
- 1:17:42Speaker 9: In their defense too, I actually kind of agree with
- 1:17:44Speaker 9: the hard line that they're drawing with some of the
- 1:17:46Speaker 9: older players on the.
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: Roster, and it's it's I'm absolutely on board with it.
- 1:17:49Speaker 9: It's a tough pill to swallow, but you look at
- 1:17:51Speaker 9: the extensions that they did hand out. It was bar More,
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: it was remondro Stevenson, it was guys that are going
- 1:17:57Speaker 9: into their second contracts, maybe a few we're going into
- 1:18:00Speaker 9: third contracts, but still on the right side of thirty.
- 1:18:03Speaker 9: Whereas you know, Gotcha's going to be thirty this year,
- 1:18:05Speaker 9: Judan's going to be thirty two. And they're drawing the
- 1:18:08Speaker 9: line at age like that seems to be where they're
- 1:18:10Speaker 9: at is, yeah, we're gonna pay the guys that we
- 1:18:13Speaker 9: feel like a Jabriel Peppers, you know, he's twenty eight
- 1:18:15Speaker 9: years old, that have a couple of years that we
- 1:18:18Speaker 9: feel like in their prime that they still have.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Left, you know, God forbid. Maybe they realize this isn't
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: gonna be the year. You know, if we were close
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: we give Judan the boat with the bag, you know,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: but maybe a boat or the bag the boatload, I
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: was thinking, But maybe they realize, yeah, this is a
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: building year, this is a year to be patient. This
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: is a year. If we're gonna sign people, we know
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: they're gonna be here for a few years. Judon's not
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: that guy. Maybe that could be what they're thinking, and
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: it's too bad for met Judan. I don't blame him.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: I don't blame him at it.
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: I think there's gotta be a compromise that can be
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: reached there where you give him some more money to
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: satisfy him in the short term. Just understand that, you know, Matthew,
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: you're probably not going to be a part of our
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: next really good team.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I double him up. I double what he's making
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: this year. I'd give him fourteen to fifteen million, you know.
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: I mean, but nobody wants to go into twenty twenty five, right,
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: Like that's I do not want to go into twenty
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: five with either one of those guys. Now the other
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: guy is going to, I think get interesting with Barbore situation.
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: Does that I mean, I know they're different kinds of players,
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: but and he's still in early lie does that make
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: him more important? Godsha talking about does that make him
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: more important? And when you look at actual do you
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: need a like yes, like a guy that you know that.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: You can rely on can you get some blood cloths
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: for me?
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: So just a joke, Gallows humor, Armarin Watts like, yep,
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: is he good enough to be like Lawrence guy? So
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: you have him and gotcha and you could probably get
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: by there.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:19:55Speaker 8: But still you're looking at him and Dietrich wise as as.
- 1:19:59Speaker 8: I mean, you throw in the mix, but those two
- 1:20:01Speaker 8: are all that's left, you know, like those are the
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: only guys who are experienced.
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: We've seen a lot of Daniel o'qualay. I don't like
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: the idea of him playing it.
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: I mean, he's been kind of a journey in. I
- 1:20:08Speaker 7: mean he was like, you know what, the fifth off defensive.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: This is why you need Bill because he would be like,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: all right, we're gonna we need to change things up.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: We don't have that guy in the middle that is
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: going to be that disruptive, that's gonna draw two people
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: almost on every play. So we're gonna have to be
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: a little creative here.
- 1:20:26Speaker 8: I mean, I just I'm imagining last year's past Rush
- 1:20:29Speaker 8: without Barmore. I mean, that's what that's what you're looking
- 1:20:32Speaker 8: at right now.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: It's not how many times when Evan when we're looking
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: through those binoculars the two men on Barmore and he's
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: still pushing him.
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: Back like evidently was only in road games because it
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: was just their little game.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: You know, in this studio, where are.
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: We gonna watch it?
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: Watch it from from the day, let's see. Barry writes
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: in I've been trying. I've been hearing about the edge
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: player Jimenez doing well. Uh if he is a dude,
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: then I think our past rush will still be there
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: as long as Judon stays and is healthy. In either
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Jimenez or Watts or quality steps up with Barmore. With
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: the Barmore absence, it won't be as good, but it doesn't.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: But that doesn't mean.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Covington and Mayo are gonna have to be creative with
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: the front seven. I'm optimistic if it comes down to this,
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: they can dial up pressures without giving up much on
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: the back end with our great corner and safety depth.
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: You know, great corner depth. Where where's the great corner Depthez?
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: I got two two guys.
- 1:21:37Speaker 10: I like their corners. I don't know if it is like.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: The starters, but where's the great depth?
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Well?
- 1:21:44Speaker 9: I feel like we know at this point that Marcus
- 1:21:47Speaker 9: Jones and Alex Austin can play in the league.
- 1:21:49Speaker 10: Are they number one corners?
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: No, I'm counting Marcus Jones is a starter, which might
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: be wrong on my part, but like Alex Austin is,
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: like that's great depth.
- 1:21:58Speaker 9: I think you saw last year down the street. Mean,
- 1:22:01Speaker 9: is your fourth cornerback? Like as a guy that's gonna
- 1:22:03Speaker 9: display situation.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: Like I think you need three. So if one guy
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: gets hurt, you're you're okay. With Alex Austin, I'm not.
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: I'm not sure that we go four deep in their
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: corner back room, you know.
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: With while talking about the other teams, I would say
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: that anybody that goes far deep has good cornerback death. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: So I don't think they the Patriots would fall into
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: that category. And I'm sorry, Like, how do you pronounce it?
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: Him?
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: And it's a hymene.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: There's been six practices. I saw him once he came
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: off the edge and had a sack. Yesterday, I noticed
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: him once he.
- 1:22:36Speaker 10: Had where is this yesterday?
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: Where is this? Like?
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: If he's a dude, somebody must have wrote something that
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: people are reading.
- 1:22:43Speaker 10: I mean, I wrote a little bit in the in
- 1:22:45Speaker 10: the Trench Report that you can read about it.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: I know a play he came off the edge off
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: the left side, I can see it in my mind's
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: eye and he got right around the corner and had
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: an easy sack.
- 1:22:55Speaker 9: Yeah, he had, you know, another one that was just
- 1:22:58Speaker 9: an unblocked on a scheme rush type thing and then
- 1:23:00Speaker 9: he was okay and the one on ones.
- 1:23:02Speaker 10: But is he a dude?
- 1:23:03Speaker 9: No, I would say maybe he's a guy, like you know,
- 1:23:06Speaker 9: he could be someone that could be on the team,
- 1:23:09Speaker 9: but he's certainly not a dude.
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: Like I just look at the team as being paper
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: thin to start with, and you're taking two of their
- 1:23:17Speaker 5: best players and possibly and I don't want to be
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: an alarmist, but Barmore is probably not going to be
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: part of the pitcher and who knows what's gonna happen
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: with judon. Two of their best players you take, and
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: it's just like, I'm not worried about it. We can
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: scheme it up and we can do that, Like I'd
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: be definitely afraid of it, Like I wouldn't just be worried.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: But when you talked about why the Patriots are going
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: to be at least as good as they were defensively
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: last year in the conversation was Barmore and Judon's coming back,
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: and you didn't have.
- 1:23:47Speaker 5: It on Gonzalez coming back. Now it's only Gonzalez coming.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: Back, right, It's a big one.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: And as much as I like yesterday, and I'm not
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: going to be a fraud because I really like Gonzales
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: and I am on, I am in on Gonzales, But
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: as much as I like him, he played four games, Like,
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: I don't know that he is, Like I know, I
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: think he is too friends.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: You can just tell us the fluidity.
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: A lot of completely.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: Guy.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: But I think he's pretty good hips. But like, does
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: that mean I'm right?
- 1:24:21Speaker 7: What if he's not.
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: In his prime? We got trouble and if they got
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: I think everybody's just that's a foregone conclusion.
- 1:24:29Speaker 9: I'm like a little worried about Deuce being at the
- 1:24:31Speaker 9: red level going forward. We might need to put him
- 1:24:34Speaker 9: on the ground because there is that what's happening. I
- 1:24:38Speaker 9: can tell him just what's happening and watching him that
- 1:24:41Speaker 9: he's very worried.
- 1:24:42Speaker 8: It's you're talking about the two guys that like the
- 1:24:44Speaker 8: Actually it's a bit of a house of cards, to
- 1:24:46Speaker 8: be honest with you.
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: Defensively, I think you're you're enabling me right now, you're
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: pushing me down the ledge. But you I mean, I
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: don't think there's a ton of I don't think there's
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: a ton of talent to begin with. I don't think
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: there's a ton of depth because obviously, if your frontline
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: players aren't all that good, you don't have behind them
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: that are any better. Yeah, I mean, you get a
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: couple of well placed injuries.
- 1:25:06Speaker 8: And I mean you remember like twenty nine, twenty ten
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: around here, when it was like there were no edge
- 1:25:11Speaker 8: guys coming MgO, getting like Derek Burgess off the scrap heap.
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: You're bringing back Tully Banta Cane, you know, like you're desperate,
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: And those are some of the worst defenses that we
- 1:25:21Speaker 8: saw in here in the last twenty years. So you know,
- 1:25:23Speaker 8: it's if I was true to myself, I would say
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: I'd much rather have two dudes at pass rusher than
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: two dudes at cornerback, you know. And that's I don't know,
- 1:25:32Speaker 8: it's a defensive philosophy thing. It's it's Bill Belichick control
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: the line of scrimmage, and well we can plug you know,
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: the Randall gaze of the world back there, and they'll
- 1:25:40Speaker 8: be okay, but I don't nobody could cover forever. And
- 1:25:43Speaker 8: if you're just not disruptive up front, it's it's just
- 1:25:47Speaker 8: it's hard to see. And there is the run defense
- 1:25:49Speaker 8: going to be as good as it was last year
- 1:25:50Speaker 8: where at least third and longer, right, because you were
- 1:25:54Speaker 8: successful on first down, So you're not in these you know,
- 1:25:57Speaker 8: situations where there's no win for the defense because it's
- 1:25:59Speaker 8: the do whatever they want. So I it's a real
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: good amount of Yeah, worried about you.
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: You get me worried about him now I have to
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: see you guys force me to worry about a lot
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: of things.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Nick and Riley writes in before training camp, all the
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: talk was Drake May's footwork. Did you guys see improvement
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: over the past few days?
- 1:26:16Speaker 9: I don't know, I don't know what I'm maybe a
- 1:26:17Speaker 9: little bit yeah, I mean, I don't know. I feel
- 1:26:20Speaker 9: like we're we're nitpicking a lot of things with Drake
- 1:26:23Speaker 9: May right now. So I want to tread a little
- 1:26:25Speaker 9: bit lightly with tearing him completely apart. But he does
- 1:26:29Speaker 9: look a little off balanced to me at times with
- 1:26:31Speaker 9: his feet and a little bit of a wide base.
- 1:26:33Speaker 10: But it's that to me is.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Now the footwork isn't the issue.
- 1:26:37Speaker 8: No, No, it's learning the offense and that's you know,
- 1:26:40Speaker 8: getting in time. And I think all those things are connected.
- 1:26:42Speaker 8: It's not, you know, so simple that they're just like, well,
- 1:26:44Speaker 8: let's just go work on footwork drills, like that's fine,
- 1:26:47Speaker 8: they'll do that. But the bigger problem is knowing where
- 1:26:49Speaker 8: to go. I mean, you know, we go back to
- 1:26:50Speaker 8: the McDaniels thing that we did with with with Paul.
- 1:26:53Speaker 8: You know, just so much of it was done pre
- 1:26:55Speaker 8: snap where his feet were going to be set. You know,
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: he knows where he's going with the ball. He knows
- 1:26:59Speaker 8: exactly you know, how he wants to set things up.
- 1:27:01Speaker 7: So it's it's all connected.
- 1:27:03Speaker 9: Yeah, I would say that, you know, maybe like get
- 1:27:06Speaker 9: him on the jump rope maybe, like his feet are
- 1:27:09Speaker 9: a little heavy.
- 1:27:11Speaker 10: And he's at such a good athlete.
- 1:27:13Speaker 9: Yeah, like he's a runner, but I don't know if
- 1:27:16Speaker 9: he's got that the agility like dance around the pocket
- 1:27:19Speaker 9: thing quite yet. But like I said, I don't want
- 1:27:22Speaker 9: to completely tear him down. But you know, I if
- 1:27:25Speaker 9: he was on time, if he was playing in rhythm,
- 1:27:27Speaker 9: then I think his feet would look better. You know,
- 1:27:29Speaker 9: when you're out of rhythm, your feet are out of whack,
- 1:27:31Speaker 9: and that's when the whole thing goes Dorian.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: Wrights In seems like Booty is having a solid camp
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: and the legal issues are resolved. Are you guys more
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: impressed by him or Rager? Also? Has Baker made enough
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: splash plays to put pressure on potentially being in that
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: starting X receiver role. Not yet.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:27:51Speaker 8: I mean, he's making some plays, but I wouldn't consider
- 1:27:53Speaker 8: him like making a push.
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: I just don't know.
- 1:27:57Speaker 9: I just don't know who receiver you're playing over him
- 1:28:01Speaker 9: at this point. Like at kJ Osborne probably, and I
- 1:28:04Speaker 9: would think they know Osborne is gonna be in the mix,
- 1:28:06Speaker 9: but Javon Baker, Jalen Pop Douglas like that. By the
- 1:28:10Speaker 9: time the season's over, you hope that those are the
- 1:28:12Speaker 9: three guys that are getting in the bulk of the
- 1:28:14Speaker 9: snatch because they've earned it, not just because you're throwing
- 1:28:16Speaker 9: him out there, but because they've earned it. And I
- 1:28:18Speaker 9: think so far in practice here on track for that.
- 1:28:21Speaker 9: But just like all the things with Drake, may it
- 1:28:24Speaker 9: might not happen overnight like it's It could be a
- 1:28:27Speaker 9: little bit, but I in terms of what we're seeing
- 1:28:30Speaker 9: I would say that those three guys are are on
- 1:28:32Speaker 9: track right now to finish the year as their top
- 1:28:35Speaker 9: three receivers, but it probably will start with Osborne. You know,
- 1:28:39Speaker 9: Bourne's healthy, Kendrick Bourne, you know those guys.
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: Bourne might be the guy. You know, but yeah, I
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: would look at Baker and say, I don't think he's
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: ready for that kind of a role. But Evan's right,
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: I don't know who I would say is the guy
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: because Bourne hasn't been able to practice. He does, you know.
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: He was out there again today with his uniform on,
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: not in pads. But I would think that that means
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: that he's getting closer and closer, and I think pup
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: to start the season is probably off the table based
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: on the amount that we've seen him. I mean, I
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: might be reading too much into that. Yeah, he would
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: be the guy that I would have, you know, for that,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: because I don't know. I thought today is in particular,
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: Baker struggled. He looked like he was kind of tired today.
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: I thought, dude, remember a couple of those deep balls
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: that he ran under and he showed this like sort
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: of explosiveness to get the ball. He didn't have that
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: gear today. There was one, there was a one on
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: one late down the on the on the right field,
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: down the down the left sideline, and the ball.
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: Was in the air.
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: He was sort of stride for stride with the defensive
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: back and I was expecting him to separate and he
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: never did. H and I talked about that crossing route
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: in team play eleven on eleven where it just looked
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: like he kind of throttled down and couldn't. I thought,
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: may put the ball in a catchable spot and he
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: didn't go and get it. Yeah, So I think he
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: struggled a little bit today. I wonder if he's a
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: little so feeling that kind of fight through those Day six.
- 1:30:04Speaker 9: Now for Drake too, a little bit, just their rookies,
- 1:30:09Speaker 9: it's their first training camp, first two days in full pass.
- 1:30:13Speaker 9: This is the part of the training camp, even for
- 1:30:15Speaker 9: us to an extent that it becomes a little bit
- 1:30:17Speaker 9: of a grind. Yeah, and yeah, I did kind of
- 1:30:20Speaker 9: notice that with some of the younger guys that maybe,
- 1:30:23Speaker 9: you know, even Kiden Wallace I thought was a little
- 1:30:25Speaker 9: shaky today and yesterday I was really impressed. I was like, oh,
- 1:30:27Speaker 9: they might have something here yesterday and today, you know,
- 1:30:30Speaker 9: he's was a little bit rookie.
- 1:30:33Speaker 8: I think with bigger too, it's like it's it's it's good.
- 1:30:35Speaker 8: It's encouraging to see the quarterbacks understand his skill set
- 1:30:38Speaker 8: and be willing to kind of like, you know, the
- 1:30:40Speaker 8: the play with me today to end it, just to
- 1:30:42Speaker 8: toss it up to him. Like it just seems like
- 1:30:44Speaker 8: they are like this guy can make some plays, you know,
- 1:30:46Speaker 8: and like that's one play, make it or not. May
- 1:30:49Speaker 8: chose us to chose to go to him. So and
- 1:30:51Speaker 8: I'd say similar with with Polk. You know, it's just
- 1:30:53Speaker 8: it's good to see these young receivers getting targets and like,
- 1:30:56Speaker 8: you know, the quarterbacks aren't icing the mind. I just
- 1:30:58Speaker 8: I remember going so long with Taekwon stuff where'd be
- 1:31:01Speaker 8: like one catch every three days and you'd be like, oh, finally,
- 1:31:04Speaker 8: you know, and it is and it's like Polk is
- 1:31:06Speaker 8: just like you know, up or down, he is out
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: there and he's consistently you know, getting the getting targeted
- 1:31:12Speaker 8: and that's you know, that's how you get better, you
- 1:31:14Speaker 8: know then, And and it's encouraging to them that the
- 1:31:15Speaker 8: quarterbacks are looking towards them and showing some trust and
- 1:31:18Speaker 8: that I think.
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: Again that's part of what we talked about earlier in
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: the show, Like they don't have quote unquote a starting
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: set of receivers, so all of those guys are getting
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: all of the reps. So they're getting a ton of targets,
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: all of them. I mean, like it's not just Polk
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: and Baker, it's it's Rager, it's Booty, it's you know,
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: Thornton had a couple of nice catches yesterday. He was
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: buya today. But you know, even I thought Juju Smith
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: Schuster was open a ton today. Had another horrific droum
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: near the sideline, did you.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Huh?
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: Did you?
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: But but he had like three or four He had
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: a nice touchdown catch rocket yeah from you know it
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: was Milton, Milton right through it through him. But he
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: was open today more than I've seen him open in
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: the in the previous five days. Did he trip over
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: a rock or something? He said after?
- 1:32:09Speaker 10: Did you see that's what.
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: He told somebody? Yeah, yeah, I didn't hear it. I
- 1:32:13Speaker 8: gotta hear say if someone said bigger, would you just
- 1:32:15Speaker 8: said he tripped over a rock over there or something?
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:32:18Speaker 9: On the field, Yeah, the route that he ran on
- 1:32:22Speaker 9: the touchdown catch from from Milton today is like a glance,
- 1:32:25Speaker 9: like a five step slant. That was probably the best
- 1:32:27Speaker 9: route I've seen him run all summer. Yeah, Like he
- 1:32:29Speaker 9: actually ran an explosive route and I was like, whoa,
- 1:32:32Speaker 9: I can put it right. Yeah, but he's one of
- 1:32:33Speaker 9: those guys that at this point of his career, it's
- 1:32:36Speaker 9: one in every ten routes.
- 1:32:37Speaker 10: He's got that juice and that's just not.
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: He was open today though. I just I just can't
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: understand how you can drop that pass that he did.
- 1:32:45Speaker 7: That was gross.
- 1:32:46Speaker 8: But I think just the hard thing though, is like
- 1:32:47Speaker 8: how do you how do you suss all this out?
- 1:32:49Speaker 8: Like where it's like one day you get a few
- 1:32:50Speaker 8: catches here, and you know, like.
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: I'm just trying to make the point, like because they
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: don't have frontline receivers, everybody's getting All those guys are
- 1:32:59Speaker 5: playing with Brissette, all of those guys are playing with May,
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: all of those guys are playing with Milton or Zappi,
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: whoever happens to get the third reps that day. And
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: then you see in a sprinkling of like eighty two
- 1:33:09Speaker 5: and eighty six, and you guys can do that on
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: your own time.
- 1:33:12Speaker 9: Jakwan Jackson and Kavon Baker, that's who you're talking about.
- 1:33:18Speaker 5: Yeah them, Yeah, Quay.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: Jeffrey and Canada writes in I'll preface this with I
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: know Patriots fans will spoil. I heard Fred's opening speech,
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: and you're right. My question is how long do we
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: have to keep acknowledging with spoil before we can complain.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: But you can complain all you want. I'm just Fred.
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: You don't tell them how they can how they should feel.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying the overreaction is what I'm worried about. Anyway,
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: he says. My complaint what is being described to us
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: by the media is a fifth straight season of below
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: average offense in training camp, in a league full of
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: constant player movement, a draft that is ordered worse to
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: first and the third highest cap space going into the offseason.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: This seems almost impossible that we're not better. I do
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: have a question about Drake May. What do you think
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: about making him making him develop with the second and
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: third string players. Is this the best strategy for him
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: to develop or would you like to see Drake May
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: take reps with the first team. That's what we talked
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: about earlier. It's like hold on like that it's just
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: the old line.
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: Like I just I just got finished explaining he's their
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: version of first string players he's been with, yeah, for receivers,
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: for tight ends, for running backs.
- 1:34:32Speaker 10: It's just he doesn't get a ton of Hunter Henry.
- 1:34:34Speaker 9: But that's not the big like I'm making a huge
- 1:34:37Speaker 9: deal out of that, but like his tight end is
- 1:34:39Speaker 9: usually Mitchell Willcox. Yeah, but it the big thing to
- 1:34:43Speaker 9: me that to answer the question that I worry about
- 1:34:46Speaker 9: a little bit is that because he's behind this offensive
- 1:34:50Speaker 9: line that's really not doing him any favors, you worry
- 1:34:54Speaker 9: about it, like frustrating him, and that's snowballing on him
- 1:34:57Speaker 9: a little bit where you know, we talked so much
- 1:34:59Speaker 9: about you know, getting rattled by the pressure last year
- 1:35:02Speaker 9: and getting sped up and that sort of thing. And
- 1:35:06Speaker 9: even though you don't think of that in practice because
- 1:35:08Speaker 9: he's not getting hit, you know, to the ground, you
- 1:35:11Speaker 9: do worry about it a little bit that like you know,
- 1:35:14Speaker 9: when Mafi's snapping the ball on his shoelaces and then
- 1:35:17Speaker 9: you know he's looking up and there's pressure in his
- 1:35:19Speaker 9: face already, and then it's like, guys, like, what do
- 1:35:21Speaker 9: you want me to do with this? And you just
- 1:35:22Speaker 9: don't want that frustration to fester.
- 1:35:24Speaker 7: The coaches, you know, they got to make sure they
- 1:35:26Speaker 7: got to bed.
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: I think he'll get some more time to with with
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: the first line as well.
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: Jeffrey also says Jacoby feels like a nine and eight ceiling,
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: and that's if everything goes that. That's if everything goes well.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: I'd rather just make May the starter and take our lumps.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: Even if we're three and fourteen. It's actually better than
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: nine and eight.
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: I just I disagree strongly with that last that last sentence,
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: but nine and eight would be wull qualify as something
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: that Jacoby said has never done.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: But also, if May's not ready, he shouldn't play. If
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: he's not ready, if he had, if he's.
- 1:36:00Speaker 9: Not significantly improved from where he's at right now, then
- 1:36:02Speaker 9: he's not playing. Like it's not even a conversation. He's
- 1:36:05Speaker 9: not playing at this rate. There's no reason for him
- 1:36:08Speaker 9: to play. It's not even so much that I don't
- 1:36:10Speaker 9: think that he could maybe be a gamer. You know,
- 1:36:13Speaker 9: I can be a little bit better in the games
- 1:36:14Speaker 9: and in practice, But what's what's the rush? Like, why
- 1:36:18Speaker 9: are you forcing him out there when he's clearly still
- 1:36:20Speaker 9: trying to get a feel for some of the nuance.
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: Now, believe it or not, I still think in the
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: next three weeks you're gonna see a big, big improvement.
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: I wouldn't be surprising nice you find that you think
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: that we're going to find that hard to believe that
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: you feel like that.
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: Oh I believe it, No, of course not. I believe
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: it or not.
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: I think that the guy is really gonna be as
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: good as anybody who's ever played this day.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: I still trust my instincts on this one.
- 1:36:44Speaker 8: I think yesterday though, for me, as somebody who's you know,
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: been saying just playing him, you know, it's the realization
- 1:36:50Speaker 8: of maybe we can't just play him like. The reality
- 1:36:53Speaker 8: is he he really might not be ready yet to
- 1:36:55Speaker 8: jump in the fire. I still think it's a last year.
- 1:36:57Speaker 8: If he goes this whole year and then and then
- 1:37:00Speaker 8: it's kind of a disappointment about his development. But what
- 1:37:03Speaker 8: we looked at yesterday, it's a reminder that this is
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: this kid, twenty one year old kids, first NFL practice
- 1:37:09Speaker 8: in pads, and he couldn't quite get it all going yet.
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: I mean, I wanted to play. I just am realistic.
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: I don't think it's going to be right away, But
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: if it was the whole season, I do think that
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: that would be a really bad sign that they felt
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: totally he did not progress enough to.
- 1:37:23Speaker 8: Warrant the very least mop up time when they're getting smoked.
- 1:37:26Speaker 8: You know, like he's he's got to get in there,
- 1:37:27Speaker 8: he's got to have a.
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: Complete decide here. And kind of irrelevant that last thing
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: in that email, Would you guys rather be three wins
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: than nine?
- 1:37:35Speaker 15: No?
- 1:37:36Speaker 5: Like that's a bit like if you want to tell
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: me I'd rather go three and fourteen than six and eleven.
- 1:37:41Speaker 5: I could sort of understand that, but nine, no, nine
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: means you've made progress, you're starting a culture, you're starting now,
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: you're on the precipice. You're either in the playoffs or
- 1:37:51Speaker 5: you're close. Like there's a lot of teams that sort
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: of make the progression from really bad to mediocre to good.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: Oh no, that's if you tell me Drake May is
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: not going to play this year, Jacobe is and you're
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: gonna win nine games, I'm like, let's go, because next
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: year when Drake May gets thrown in, he's thrown into
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: a team that just won nine games.
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that would be a ridiculously positive sign.
- 1:38:14Speaker 10: That's sort of how I feel.
- 1:38:16Speaker 9: Not nine wins, but like where I am starting to
- 1:38:19Speaker 9: see some progress from the offensive line and the two
- 1:38:21Speaker 9: young receivers are flashing a little bit where yeah, all
- 1:38:25Speaker 9: of us wish it was Drake May that was the
- 1:38:27Speaker 9: one that was quarterbacking the offense. But even if we
- 1:38:30Speaker 9: come out of the first you know, this training camp,
- 1:38:32Speaker 9: let's not even talk about the season yet. If you
- 1:38:34Speaker 9: come out of this training camp saying, well, we have
- 1:38:37Speaker 9: some pieces on the line. Now we feel pretty good
- 1:38:40Speaker 9: about Kayden Wallace seems like a player, like he's a
- 1:38:43Speaker 9: starting tackle potentially in the league. These two young receivers
- 1:38:46Speaker 9: can potentially play in the league as well, And now
- 1:38:48Speaker 9: you start to feel like the foundation around the quarterback
- 1:38:52Speaker 9: is elevated a little bit. And when Drake's time comes,
- 1:38:55Speaker 9: as time comes, like and if.
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: You really think like they had a good draft, yeah
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: had you know, Elliott Wolf's first draft was a really
- 1:39:02Speaker 5: good one. And it actually was. I mean, I know
- 1:39:06Speaker 5: it's going to be considered a good one regardless of
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: what happens because that's just what we do around here,
- 1:39:10Speaker 5: but it actually was a good draft.
- 1:39:12Speaker 7: No, I mean, you get Wallace Polk and Baker. I mean,
- 1:39:15Speaker 7: may out of it is.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: We don't know, no, but I'm saying it was a
- 1:39:19Speaker 5: good Like what everans like if Kyton Wallace plays the
- 1:39:22Speaker 5: whole whole year and no one's saying, yeah, wow, what
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: a train wreck that was, and you know, he looks
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: like a good pick, you know, like he actually is
- 1:39:30Speaker 5: a good pick, not like you know, we just sort
- 1:39:33Speaker 5: of deem him because he's on the team. It makes
- 1:39:35Speaker 5: him a good pick, which is what we've done for
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: the last three or four drafts. For Bellicht, like twenty one,
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: everybody would, oh, look at this guy, Look at that guy.
- 1:39:42Speaker 5: Can we let him play a couple of games before?
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: We just deemed that a great pick, and then all
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: of a sudden they're all gone. Right, It's like who's
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: left Barmore and Marmandre.
- 1:39:51Speaker 10: It two guys is close to a good draft. Usually
- 1:39:54Speaker 10: they say three is a good job.
- 1:39:56Speaker 5: I would say that that wasn't bad.
- 1:39:58Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:39:58Speaker 5: Now, obviously drafts get graded a little bit differently when
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: a quarterback's involved and you took a first round quarterback
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: and all pros r That's what I'm saying, like, Wow,
- 1:40:10Speaker 5: what a draft?
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: What a draft?
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: Until they're all not on the team three years later.
- 1:40:13Speaker 9: Yeah, Jalen Polk fascinates me though, Like this is goes
- 1:40:16Speaker 9: against every fiber of my being, like watching this guy
- 1:40:19Speaker 9: because I just don't see it like a ton of
- 1:40:22Speaker 9: explosiveness out of him. But he catches a lot of
- 1:40:25Speaker 9: passes and when the ball is thrown his way for
- 1:40:28Speaker 9: the most part. He did have the one we talked
- 1:40:30Speaker 9: about earlier where I thought he had a chance to
- 1:40:32Speaker 9: catch it, but you know, he goes over. I was
- 1:40:34Speaker 9: in Marco Wilson in the corn of the end zone.
- 1:40:36Speaker 9: Then he catches the the little out from uh, you know,
- 1:40:40Speaker 9: Sean Wade. And he's just catching all these passes. And
- 1:40:43Speaker 9: I think the one thing that Deuce and I talked
- 1:40:44Speaker 9: about was after the catch, is he going to bring
- 1:40:47Speaker 9: any sort of juice down the field or after the
- 1:40:50Speaker 9: catch or is he going to be Not that there's
- 1:40:53Speaker 9: anything wrong with it, but is he going to be
- 1:40:54Speaker 9: like a Jacobi Myers that you know gets his ten
- 1:40:56Speaker 9: to eleven yards per catch And that's sort of who
- 1:40:59Speaker 9: he is, and that's all he brings to the table.
- 1:41:01Speaker 9: He gets open, but it's not open open, it's just enough, right,
- 1:41:07Speaker 9: And he's got great hands.
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: And if you pop Douglas for if you had to
- 1:41:10Speaker 5: say right now, in camp, did he do you think
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: he averaged ten or eleven yards at catch? Because I
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: would say no.
- 1:41:18Speaker 10: Probably not, probably like eight or nine.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: Well, he had a couple of downfield that would bring
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: up the average, didn't he, Polk?
- 1:41:24Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, some fifty to fifty balls one today and
- 1:41:28Speaker 10: then he had.
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: I don't remember anything downfield to him.
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: No, that looks when I say downfield, I mean like
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: twenty yards.
- 1:41:34Speaker 9: Yeah, he had the one today was probably about seventeen
- 1:41:36Speaker 9: eighteen yards down the field.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: Okay, but no, it brings up the act.
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: But I'm with you, Paul, but that's I think he's
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: got about thirty four yard crossers, right.
- 1:41:46Speaker 9: But that question is is that if maybe he's better
- 1:41:49Speaker 9: after the catch, then I think he is. Yeah, then
- 1:41:52Speaker 9: all of a sudden, those four yard you know, those
- 1:41:54Speaker 9: little six yard outs that he's in college not necessarily
- 1:41:57Speaker 9: so he won't be.
- 1:41:58Speaker 7: He's gonna run over guy, yeah, run through guys.
- 1:42:00Speaker 10: Yeah, he just doesn't. He doesn't have that like Baker.
- 1:42:03Speaker 5: Run over guys in the NFL.
- 1:42:05Speaker 7: It's pretty good. He's like six one.
- 1:42:07Speaker 9: Baker has that extra gear though, Like whether it's in
- 1:42:10Speaker 9: the when the ball's in the air or with the
- 1:42:11Speaker 9: ball in his hands, Like Baker's got some juice, like
- 1:42:14Speaker 9: he's got an extra gear that he can throttle down
- 1:42:17Speaker 9: and pull away from a defense every once in a while.
- 1:42:19Speaker 10: But I just don't necessarily see that from Polk.
- 1:42:21Speaker 9: So like Paul, is he gonna be this like inefficient
- 1:42:24Speaker 9: sixty five catch guy for seven hundred yards, which is
- 1:42:28Speaker 9: like fine, but.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: It comes to those physical traits. If they don't have
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: him in college, it's it's hard to get him. You know,
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: you don't become you know, four to three in the
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: pros when you weren't that in college.
- 1:42:40Speaker 5: Waffling on him because they're are I mean there are
- 1:42:43Speaker 5: there are a place like you could see plays and
- 1:42:45Speaker 5: you can see the stuff that mike production. He'll have
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: production that's not production. Like I don't care how many
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: catches to me, isn't production to me? It is, Yeah,
- 1:42:53Speaker 5: I understand that. But just you would never say a
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: running back was productive because he had twenty carries in
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: the game. You would never say that. No, But if
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: he had if he had twenty carries for forty yards,
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: you would never say he was productive. He had twenty carries.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that carries is different than catches.
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: Well, to me, it's it's not unless you do something
- 1:43:10Speaker 5: with the catches and you do something.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: Well, if it catches for a first down or if
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: it's you know, then right.
- 1:43:15Speaker 5: Then that's then that's productive.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: The stuff that he's catching in practice on it, for
- 1:43:19Speaker 5: the most part, is not resulting in first do you know,
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: because they're like three yard passes.
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: Well, maybe it was third and two. Okay, I'm serious.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: I mean, like you know, like Leonard Myers is, I'm
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: not Leonard Myers, Toby Myers is. He didn't have a
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: lot of Robby Myers was productive, but he didn't have
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: a lot of yard.
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: But he didn't catch up all his passes within like
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: a yard of the line of ship, and neither of
- 1:43:42Speaker 5: his poke come on. The vast majority of the passes
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: that he has caught have been shallow crosses or quick outs.
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: Yeah seven yards sometimes Yeah, no, no way, you're being
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: a little extreme now.
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: Listen. I said, I'm waffling because there have been some
- 1:43:56Speaker 5: plays the last two days in pads and I've been
- 1:43:59Speaker 5: saying this about him. You guys might and I say,
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: Mike and Evan told me a lot about him post draft,
- 1:44:06Speaker 5: about his physicality and his ability to carve out space.
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: I've seen that with pads On, Yeah, and I thought
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: that he might look better with pads On than he
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: did without him, because the lack of explosiveness isn't as
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: noticeable when you're carving out space.
- 1:44:22Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: Yeah, So that's what kind of guy is.
- 1:44:25Speaker 5: Then that's that's a good asset to have, and I
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: have seen signs of that yesterday and today today especially,
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: I thought he made a lot of catches today, you know,
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: like that.
- 1:44:35Speaker 10: Yeah, there's just there's so many examples.
- 1:44:36Speaker 9: So he ran a four four five four in the
- 1:44:39Speaker 9: forty yard dash, and we talk a lot about how
- 1:44:41Speaker 9: the forty yard dash isn't always everything for receivers, and
- 1:44:44Speaker 9: there's so many examples of guys that went on to
- 1:44:47Speaker 9: have amazing NFL careers in that range of the forty
- 1:44:50Speaker 9: yard dash. You know, I think of like Keenan Allen
- 1:44:52Speaker 9: and Michael Thomas and like those types of players. And
- 1:44:55Speaker 9: but like those guys to me, were played much faster
- 1:44:58Speaker 9: than what I see so far out of Polk. But like,
- 1:45:01Speaker 9: there's a possibility that he is one of those types
- 1:45:04Speaker 9: of guys that just plays a little bit faster than
- 1:45:06Speaker 9: any times and is just a good football player and
- 1:45:09Speaker 9: his physical and all those types of things. And we've
- 1:45:12Speaker 9: seen that in a little bit, I think in flashes.
- 1:45:14Speaker 9: But I'm with Paul. I don't know what to make
- 1:45:16Speaker 9: of it yet. I know I'm not out on him.
- 1:45:18Speaker 5: I'm not telling you.
- 1:45:19Speaker 7: It's interesting hearing you kind of go back and forth on.
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: I'm definitely because I do see some of the stuff
- 1:45:25Speaker 5: that you two told me about. I've seen some of
- 1:45:27Speaker 5: that manifest on the field now. But I've also seen
- 1:45:31Speaker 5: the Vincent Brisbee stuff that I talk about all the time.
- 1:45:33Speaker 5: It was just like, that's what he is now in
- 1:45:35Speaker 5: two years, three years, is not going to be much
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: gas there.
- 1:45:38Speaker 9: The catch that he made today in the corner of
- 1:45:40Speaker 9: the end zone, I think it was over Marco Wilson,
- 1:45:42Speaker 9: like those down the field. That's how he's going to
- 1:45:45Speaker 9: win down the field. And in college at Washington, Pennix
- 1:45:48Speaker 9: has great Paul placement down the field, So he was
- 1:45:51Speaker 9: on such a great like chemistry between the two guys
- 1:45:54Speaker 9: where they knew like put it on his shoulder or
- 1:45:57Speaker 9: put it up or put it you know where you
- 1:45:58Speaker 9: were going to place it around defender. And I think
- 1:46:01Speaker 9: some of these downfield targets that we've seen from Polk
- 1:46:03Speaker 9: that haven't been successful. I'm hoping that with more time
- 1:46:06Speaker 9: with the quarterbacks, you know, they'll He'll say to him, Hey,
- 1:46:08Speaker 9: if the defender is like on my inside hip, I
- 1:46:11Speaker 9: like the back shoulder, or if it you know, he's
- 1:46:13Speaker 9: on top of me, You'll throw it up and I'm
- 1:46:15Speaker 9: gonna go up and get it. And then those completions,
- 1:46:17Speaker 9: you know, those are the little things that change those
- 1:46:19Speaker 9: incompletions into more completions.
- 1:46:21Speaker 8: I'd say there were maybe like two passes that I
- 1:46:22Speaker 8: was just a little bit disappointed in because at Washington,
- 1:46:26Speaker 8: Ariel guy like him flying through the air, he caught
- 1:46:28Speaker 8: a bunch of passes. You know, there's and then again
- 1:46:30Speaker 8: I think that's part of his game. There's been a
- 1:46:31Speaker 8: couple of these drop though, and I think, you know,
- 1:46:33Speaker 8: to your point, that's what it is.
- 1:46:35Speaker 7: You know, it's tight jumping, you know.
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: So the ones that have me concerned.
- 1:46:38Speaker 14: There was a.
- 1:46:40Speaker 5: Early in practice he ran a quick out on Marco
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: Wilson and like Wilson was with I mean, it was
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: like maybe maybe five yards and I think I'm being
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: generous and Wilson was like right in his shirt and
- 1:46:56Speaker 5: they went up and he had his hand in between
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: Polk's hands. Polk made the catch, strong hands. But I'm
- 1:47:01Speaker 5: thinking wow for four yards the battle and Marco Wilson.
- 1:47:07Speaker 5: Oh no, Marco Wilson is a five year veteran. But
- 1:47:10Speaker 5: my point is that's an awful lot of work for
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: not getting any separation at all. Like, that's what kind
- 1:47:17Speaker 5: of worries me. But the play that you guys are
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: talking about in the end zone, there was a little
- 1:47:22Speaker 5: separation and he did go up and make that play
- 1:47:25Speaker 5: that you guys have been telling me. That's his calling
- 1:47:26Speaker 5: card and he can make those kind of physical plays.
- 1:47:29Speaker 10: So I see that too.
- 1:47:31Speaker 5: That's why I'm waffling, which is very rare for me.
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: Usually I'm in or out.
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: Tom writes in if I'm not mistaken, Judon's still under
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: contract for this year. What took place yesterday with the
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: disrespect show toward his teammates, coaching staff, leadership, and ownership,
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: I think Judon should be traded for as value to
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: try to get another defensive lineman or upgrade the wide
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: receiver position.
- 1:47:56Speaker 9: I just think that your expectations have to be lowered
- 1:48:00Speaker 9: of what he's worth. You're not gonna I don't think
- 1:48:03Speaker 9: you're gonna get a player that's worth trading for right now.
- 1:48:07Speaker 9: For Matthew Jude, on these the trades, especially this time
- 1:48:10Speaker 9: of year, the value just isn't there and that that's where.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: But for a team that just needs that little over there.
- 1:48:17Speaker 5: Do they have a disgruntled defensive lineman. No, but because
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: that's I mean, you're only going to get a defensive
- 1:48:22Speaker 5: lineman in return. It's someone's in the same kind of situation.
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: Because you're gonna Yeah, that's true, but.
- 1:48:28Speaker 5: With everything else, he said, I thought it was disrespectful
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: what he did yesterday, and I would strongly consider trading him.
- 1:48:34Speaker 5: But it's probably gonna be for a draft pick.
- 1:48:36Speaker 9: Yeah, it's be for a draft pick. And the windows
- 1:48:39Speaker 9: to like maximize his value are in March, you know,
- 1:48:43Speaker 9: with the draft coming up, and then at the probably
- 1:48:46Speaker 9: at the trade deadline.
- 1:48:47Speaker 5: I think I think you can get a Day two
- 1:48:49Speaker 5: pick at the trade deadline.
- 1:48:51Speaker 9: Yeah, if a team is desperate in like a contender,
- 1:48:54Speaker 9: and they either look at it as to your point,
- 1:48:56Speaker 9: a piece to put them over the top, or they
- 1:48:58Speaker 9: had a rash of injuries at Dresser and the Niners
- 1:49:01Speaker 9: are are looking for edge guys and they still want
- 1:49:04Speaker 9: to have this super Bowl team.
- 1:49:05Speaker 10: Then yeah, maybe it's just.
- 1:49:06Speaker 8: Kind of tough though, because Jewdom will be hip to
- 1:49:09Speaker 8: that plan, right, Like, I don't know, it just it
- 1:49:11Speaker 8: doesn't seem like and I like that plan. But is
- 1:49:14Speaker 8: he gonna like that plan?
- 1:49:15Speaker 7: Is he gonna know? Is he gonna just feel like
- 1:49:17Speaker 7: a lame duck here?
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: He's gonna like the plan for whoever pays for money?
- 1:49:20Speaker 7: He just like, yeah, you know, and he'll be and
- 1:49:22Speaker 7: he'll he can go.
- 1:49:23Speaker 5: Somewhere else and they and they might give him, you
- 1:49:25Speaker 5: know what he's looking for for a contract.
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:49:29Speaker 5: He said the right things that day by saying I
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: don't want to be traded, but you think you'd be
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: really bad if he was traded.
- 1:49:34Speaker 10: No, not to a good team if he gets his bag.
- 1:49:37Speaker 9: I just remember going back to his introductory press conference
- 1:49:40Speaker 9: with the Patriots. He was honest with us then, and
- 1:49:43Speaker 9: he's been such a cool guy to cover. Yeah, I
- 1:49:46Speaker 9: feel like the last couple of years that I almost forgot.
- 1:49:48Speaker 9: But his twenty twenty one press conference, they someone asked
- 1:49:52Speaker 9: him point blank, why did you pick the Patriots? He said,
- 1:49:54Speaker 9: because they paid me the most money, and then he
- 1:49:57Speaker 9: went out and he bawled out. To his credit, he
- 1:50:00Speaker 9: was like this cool guy in the locker room, a
- 1:50:02Speaker 9: lot of energy and a really good teammate by all
- 1:50:05Speaker 9: you know accounts. But now you're starting to see the
- 1:50:08Speaker 9: business side of it creep back in for him a
- 1:50:09Speaker 9: little bit.
- 1:50:10Speaker 5: The side of the business.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: Yeah, all he has every right to hold out, hold
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: in whatever for more money, but what he did yesterday
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: was wrong. I agree that was wrong. Steve in Texas.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: If Poke is Jacoby Myers, do we consider that a bust?
- 1:50:25Speaker 18: No?
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: No, No, I wouldn't. No, I'm hoping for more, but
- 1:50:29Speaker 5: I wouldn't consider that a bust. I think Jacoby Myers
- 1:50:32Speaker 5: was a good player for this team, and he was
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: a good player for the Raiders last year.
- 1:50:36Speaker 9: Yeah, with Paul, I wouldn't consider him a bust. Now
- 1:50:39Speaker 9: you would like that Javon Baker is like a compliment.
- 1:50:42Speaker 7: To that, like if some explosion.
- 1:50:44Speaker 9: If Jalen Polk's kind of the steady Eddy, then you
- 1:50:46Speaker 9: would hope that Javon Baker is maybe not as consistent,
- 1:50:49Speaker 9: but it's a little bit flashier.
- 1:50:50Speaker 10: Yeah, and that's exactly what I thought.
- 1:50:52Speaker 9: These two guys were going to be when they drafted them,
- 1:50:55Speaker 9: you know, just watching them before the draft, and that's
- 1:50:56Speaker 9: exactly who they've been through six days of camp. It's
- 1:50:59Speaker 9: one guy is the underneath guy that's going to pick
- 1:51:01Speaker 9: up you know, seven or eight yards and getting move
- 1:51:04Speaker 9: the chains. The other guy wants every practice he's gonna
- 1:51:07Speaker 9: make a catch that you're like, wow, that that's a
- 1:51:09Speaker 9: hell of a catch.
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: Audrey new Hampshire writes, and wow, a room of naked
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: knees looking good, PAULI in your U n C. Gear.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: I was gonna have Paul dress up like that Italian
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: diver today that's going around the internet. Have you seen that?
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: There a guy who won last night?
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: No, No, that's a swimmer. Swimming guy's a diver.
- 1:51:28Speaker 5: He got a little uh little something extra up yeah front,
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: Yeah he was.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I could see why you would think he's a standout.
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: I could see why you would.
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: Think of me.
- 1:51:36Speaker 8: Then, yeah, they have some ridiculous packing some heat.
- 1:51:40Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, heavy guys pack in heavy heat.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: It's got a little diving board going on in there.
- 1:51:47Speaker 10: What are we talking about?
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: Anyway? Look it up his name is or something like that. Obviously,
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: we fans need patience because so much is new. All
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: the conversation about what a good season looks like is
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: so varied. But to me, I'm most interested in whether
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: or not this is going to be a competent coaching staff.
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: I think it's rare that all top positions are our newbies.
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: Do they all work together? Well, I'm certainly hoping for
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: the best. But until the base system of learning, teaching,
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: and execution is adapted and sync I think he says
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: syncd up, it's hard to expect players to really elevate
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: to their potential. And Paul, you said you sat with
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: Andy again. You know he keeps improving in his new work.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: Pretty likely to be an Andy Hart show at some
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: point in the near future.
- 1:52:42Speaker 7: Oh, I think so. From heart to heart.
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: Probably not, but I'm here for it. I'll write his
- 1:52:50Speaker 5: coat tails if you'll let me. What do you guys
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: think of the I think it's a good point about
- 1:52:55Speaker 5: the coaches, like, you know, what's a successful season. But
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: how would you guys like when you watched and said, yeah,
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: these guys did a good job in their first year
- 1:53:04Speaker 5: as coaches.
- 1:53:05Speaker 8: Scrappy team, scrappy team with some guys that emerge, and
- 1:53:08Speaker 8: you see guys improving, and they're just they keep fighting.
- 1:53:11Speaker 7: You know, they don't beat themselves.
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: Yeah, what you just said. They don't beat themselves. They
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: limit the mistakes, they shore up special teams. You know,
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: compared to what it was last year, we're not hearing
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: about nonsense in the locker room things like, you know,
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: all the things of a buttoned up team. Yeah.
- 1:53:30Speaker 9: The one thing I like, I guess Detroit, I think
- 1:53:32Speaker 9: is the best example I can think of is what
- 1:53:34Speaker 9: Dan Campbell. Everybody's pulling on the rope, you know, like
- 1:53:38Speaker 9: the rope is all being pulled, and it's being pulled
- 1:53:40Speaker 9: in the right direction and there's not all these ulterior
- 1:53:43Speaker 9: motives and all.
- 1:53:44Speaker 10: That kind of stuff kind of dies down a little bit.
- 1:53:47Speaker 9: But in terms of like the actual on field coaching,
- 1:53:50Speaker 9: I feel pretty good about the defense because even though
- 1:53:53Speaker 9: he you can argue that he wasn't necessarily qualified to
- 1:53:55Speaker 9: be a head coach, yet grod was certainly qualified to
- 1:53:58Speaker 9: be a defensive coordinator. And I think he's going to
- 1:54:00Speaker 9: run the defense along with side with Covington. Like, I
- 1:54:03Speaker 9: think that he's going to have a big hand in things.
- 1:54:06Speaker 9: And we'll see about Van Pelt. You know, I thought
- 1:54:07Speaker 9: there was an interesting quote about you know, from the
- 1:54:10Speaker 9: the Browns GM yesterday talking about why they hired Ken Dorsey,
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: and it kind of connected and a lot of the
- 1:54:17Speaker 9: things that they said were, you know, we want to
- 1:54:19Speaker 9: use more emotion, we want to be better in the
- 1:54:21Speaker 9: drop back game, we want to incorporate more RPOs. It
- 1:54:24Speaker 9: was sort of the things that we were talking about
- 1:54:25Speaker 9: a little bit when they hired Van Pelt. Like that
- 1:54:27Speaker 9: scheme in Cleveland got a little stale, I got a
- 1:54:29Speaker 9: little old school, got a little stale. So is he
- 1:54:32Speaker 9: able to adapt or you know, add things or whatever
- 1:54:36Speaker 9: that are a little bit more I hate to use
- 1:54:38Speaker 9: the word modern because everybody picks on that phrase modern offense,
- 1:54:41Speaker 9: but like that that is a little bit more innovative
- 1:54:44Speaker 9: than what they were doing.
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: I want to go back to something you think is
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: going to happen though, running the defense? Is that is
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: that good? Do we want him spending his time running
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: the defense?
- 1:54:53Speaker 10: Personally?
- 1:54:53Speaker 18: I do?
- 1:54:55Speaker 9: Now, like if he wants to become more of like
- 1:54:58Speaker 9: the floater and the CEO coach four or five years
- 1:55:00Speaker 9: down the line, when he's been doing this for a
- 1:55:02Speaker 9: little bit, then I'm all for that. But now, like,
- 1:55:07Speaker 9: does he really know a ton about offense.
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying he should be running the offense,
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: but there's a lot to being a head coach besides coordinating.
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: I don't know it's at a risk to have him
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: spend so much time focused on defense and not just
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: the overall team.
- 1:55:24Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:55:25Speaker 9: I wonder if you know in Houston, their structure right
- 1:55:28Speaker 9: now is like that overall team stuff is Nick Caserio
- 1:55:31Speaker 9: like Nick Caserio, not necessarily in the locker room, but
- 1:55:34Speaker 9: like all they're like you know, CEO type stuff going
- 1:55:38Speaker 9: into the head coach ok and Demiko is on the
- 1:55:41Speaker 9: sideland with the play sheet calling the defense on Sundays
- 1:55:44Speaker 9: like he's running the defense. And with these younger coaches,
- 1:55:48Speaker 9: I like, stick to what you know, like you're not
- 1:55:49Speaker 9: Bill Belichick, where you can have your hand in every
- 1:55:52Speaker 9: single you know pot and be able to know exactly
- 1:55:56Speaker 9: which buttons to push.
- 1:55:57Speaker 10: I think that's a lot to ask of him right now.
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: I like that that Houston thing, you know, inadvertently gave
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: me some confidence, Like that is how it's set up.
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: You know, it's Casario has the final say and he's
- 1:56:07Speaker 5: in charge of everything, and he has you know, the
- 1:56:09Speaker 5: young defensive minded coach under him, and it's you know,
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: at least one year it worked. That gives me some
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: confidence that it can work like that here too, like
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: because I've sort of been critical what happens when there's
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: an impasse, but they've made it work a little bit,
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: so you know, we'll see, you know. But the back
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: to the email about the coaching, and I understand his
- 1:56:31Speaker 5: point about like, you know, maybe they won't be you know,
- 1:56:34Speaker 5: the most successful team wins and the losses, but like,
- 1:56:38Speaker 5: can you you know what when you see it when
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: a team looks like they're buttoned down and disciplined and
- 1:56:44Speaker 5: avoiding those mistakes. And I'm not gonna lie. These two
- 1:56:47Speaker 5: days in pads have me a little concerned about the discipline,
- 1:56:51Speaker 5: the amount of false starts and re huddles and offensive laps,
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: and I'm glad that they're addressing it. I think Girod's
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: doing a good job of trying to nip it in
- 1:57:01Speaker 5: the butt. And listening to Austin Hooper yesterday, he was great.
- 1:57:05Speaker 5: He's like, listen, these things that we're not doing don't
- 1:57:09Speaker 5: require any talent. The things that you know, the pre
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: snap penalties, that doesn't require any talent at all. You
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: know to come out here. You understand that you're jacked
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: out first day of pads and everybody wants to hit hit,
- 1:57:20Speaker 5: but you need to keep your mental approach in the
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: appropriate spot and we have to be accountable. And then
- 1:57:27Speaker 5: he finished it all off by saying, you have to
- 1:57:29Speaker 5: decide do you want to be a cross country team
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: or do you want to be a football team, Because
- 1:57:33Speaker 5: I've been on teams where they're perfectly content to say, well,
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: if you're not going to do it right, we might
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: as well be in good condition and you're just going
- 1:57:40Speaker 5: to run. He goes, personally, I'd rather be on a
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: football team than a cross country team, is good. And
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: then they came out today and did a lot of
- 1:57:46Speaker 5: the same stuff they did yesterday.
- 1:57:48Speaker 2: Frankly, so, well, that's where Girodd needs to get on
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: his offensive coaches and say listen, button it up, let's go.
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: So I'm glad that they're addressing it, though, like, don't
- 1:58:01Speaker 5: just say, well, it's camp, it's the first day at pads. No,
- 1:58:04Speaker 5: it's important, you know.
- 1:58:06Speaker 12: I was.
- 1:58:07Speaker 5: I was glad to hear Girod Mayo talk about something
- 1:58:09Speaker 5: that Baker had done two or three three days earlier,
- 1:58:12Speaker 5: or maybe on the Sunday practice they all blend in.
- 1:58:15Speaker 5: When he caught that long pass and he he like
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: tumbled to the ground, he got up and threw the
- 1:58:19Speaker 5: ball in the air. That's a fumble. He hadn't been touched,
- 1:58:23Speaker 5: you know, not to mention that if he threw the
- 1:58:25Speaker 5: ball in the air as high as he did in
- 1:58:27Speaker 5: the game and he had been touched, it probably would
- 1:58:28Speaker 5: have been a penalty, right right, you know what I mean.
- 1:58:32Speaker 5: But I'm glad that he addressed that.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: And and I've had enough of we complete a pass
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: downfield and the whole team runs down and let's let's
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: save that. No, really as many reps in as possible,
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: and you're wasting time.
- 1:58:46Speaker 9: I agree with that point of it too, But I
- 1:58:48Speaker 9: also just think, like, act like you've been there before
- 1:58:50Speaker 9: a little bit, Like so the defense kicks your butt
- 1:58:53Speaker 9: all day long, right, and you make one play down
- 1:58:55Speaker 9: the field and then everything when down there, did.
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: You see when Milton through the the slant to Ju.
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: Threw the bird up like you, like, like Evan said,
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: act like you've been there before, and like the defense
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: celebrated after every play.
- 1:59:10Speaker 5: We'd never have p well, they celebrated after every play
- 1:59:13Speaker 5: in that late that late team period.
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: Okay, but.
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: I think it was because of what you said, though,
- 1:59:19Speaker 5: I think it was a response to the offenses. The
- 1:59:23Speaker 5: defense got jacked up a little bit.
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: We're wasting time, you guys. It's frustrating. And this is
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: what this is why I go back too focusing on defense.
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: Let's focus on getting this team buttoned up in all aspects,
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: In all aspects.
- 1:59:44Speaker 10: It is interesting how little special teams they've done.
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:59:47Speaker 9: Personally because I'm not here to watch watch kicking. But
- 1:59:53Speaker 9: it's it's different. I'm not saying it's better or worse,
- 1:59:56Speaker 9: but it's it's definitely different.
- 1:59:59Speaker 7: What do yesterday?
- 2:00:00Speaker 5: It used to always be, you know, seven on seven
- 2:00:03Speaker 5: eleven on eleven special teams.
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: There was always two special reset.
- 2:00:08Speaker 5: Seven on seven eleven on always another special teams, and
- 2:00:11Speaker 5: then they might do like the opportunity.
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: Portion at the end, and then always field goal.
- 2:00:15Speaker 5: Now it's only one special teams, and it's not anywhere
- 2:00:19Speaker 5: near as in depth as it used to be.
- 2:00:21Speaker 7: No, I just one quick point.
- 2:00:22Speaker 8: I know we're gonna end, but I just thought they
- 2:00:23Speaker 8: did some kickoff yesterday. I thought, or kickoff return. I
- 2:00:26Speaker 8: thought Marcus Jones looks like a nightmare with this new setup.
- 2:00:28Speaker 8: He looks like a problem.
- 2:00:30Speaker 5: So I just looked at it and I watched there
- 2:00:32Speaker 5: was like six guys that handled the kickoff, and I said,
- 2:00:37Speaker 5: anybody but him handling a kick is a mistake. That's
- 2:00:40Speaker 5: how different it looks when he has the ball. I
- 2:00:42Speaker 5: think he's Devin Hester. I think he's that much of
- 2:00:45Speaker 5: a difference maker. And as a return guy.
- 2:00:47Speaker 8: You see the I mean they wait and it's there's
- 2:00:49Speaker 8: a gap and you've got some you got some time
- 2:00:52Speaker 8: to maneuver. It's not eleven guys charging down at different
- 2:00:55Speaker 8: angles and it's hard.
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: Going to kick into that. They're all going to kick
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: it out.
- 2:00:59Speaker 5: Would if that becomes any kind of a problem in
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: the first week or so, everybody's just gonna kick. Like
- 2:01:04Speaker 5: the NFL thinks they're so clever with this nonsense. There's
- 2:01:07Speaker 5: such an easy way of all touchbacks after week three.
- 2:01:10Speaker 2: Right, all right, that's going to be it for this
