- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here want to jump
- 0:02into this debate about NASCAR and losing fans from the 1990s
- 0:08that never came back. So basically, Kyle Busch brought
- 0:11this up last weekend. A lot of people are talking
- 0:14about it. You have the die hard fans of
- 0:16NASCAR, of the Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Terry
- 0:20Labonte, Mark Martin, Harry Gant, you name it.
- 0:24Guys from the 90s, mid 90s, late 90s, all of that and our world
- 0:30now today of the 2024 is a lot different fan base of following
- 0:35along. We, I don't feel like we were
- 0:37able to transition a lot of the fans that were fans of those
- 0:41drivers, of the names that I just mentioned into a William
- 0:44Byron fan or into a Kyle fan or into whoever, you know, they
- 0:49kind of probably went away. And I think there's a lot of
- 0:52truth to that. And growing up in Toledo, OH,
- 0:56where I did and I wasn't a NASCAR fan, I think I can speak
- 0:59to to why NASCAR lost a lot of the casual fans.
- 1:04So growing up, my birthday's May 28th, so to me, racing was
- 1:09always Indy 500, right? I'd heard of the Andretti's and
- 1:12Fittipaldi's and AJ Foyd and all that.
- 1:14Didn't know hardly anything about NASCAR, but I do remember
- 1:18early 90s and we were into baseball cards.
- 1:20My dad collected some stuff. I remember the Richard Petty
- 1:24collectible pop bottles or soda, whatever you call it.
- 1:28Glass bottles. I think it was Pepsi.
- 1:30Could be Coke, I'm not sure. But I remember the King.
- 1:34They had the collectible bottles, however many it was.
- 1:38And I'd heard of Dale Earnhardt in the 90s.
- 1:40I'd heard of Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon comes on the scene
- 1:45and he had the the Rainbow Warrior car.
- 1:48And he was young and then he had the Pepsi commercials as well.
- 1:53And I think I think this is NASCAR's big problem now is the
- 1:59marketability back then of those guys.
- 2:03They were able to attract the casual fans and you can you can
- 2:08basically talk about Dale Junior then where look this is probably
- 2:12more late 90s early 2000s but Dale Dale Earnhardt Junior, I
- 2:16remember from MTV Cribs and and Budweiser and Dale Earnhardt
- 2:21Junior doing commercials as well and that's where I I don't think
- 2:27NASCAR nowadays they don't have any drivers.
- 2:32I don't want to say that don't have that marketability but the
- 2:36sponsors aren't doing it and the guys aren't out there now.
- 2:39I think they have really good personalities.
- 2:42I I've said all the time, Denny Hamlin, like him or not, is a
- 2:47great personality. And even if he's the villain, he
- 2:51is a great personality. He's funny, he's interesting.
- 2:54Kyle Busch also, who obviously used to be the villain, I feel
- 2:58like now he's the good guy, great personality, funny.
- 3:02Every time he does a media availability, there's something
- 3:04funny in there, there's something interesting.
- 3:07But if you go from basically all those iconic drivers that I
- 3:10mentioned and then go through kind of the 2000s, to me there
- 3:17wasn't anybody that that really grabbed you besides Dale
- 3:21Earnhardt Junior, even even Jimmie Johnson, seven time
- 3:25champion. And I worked in sports my whole
- 3:28life. I worked in sports for 20 years.
- 3:30I'm trying to think if I didn't work in sports would I have
- 3:34known of Jimmie Johnson and and I'm just saying, look, his his
- 3:38profile, his Q rating was not that of Jeff Gordon who was his
- 3:44teammate who had the four championships but wasn't as
- 3:47successful. To me, Jeff Gordon, it was about
- 3:50like he was in the Nelly song. Remember Jeff Gordon with the
- 3:54was it white s s with the navigation And I think look, you
- 3:58might laugh at that, but stuff like that matters and being in
- 4:02commercials and being in songs and all that.
- 4:05And that's why those guys, the Earnhardt's, the Petty's, Rusty
- 4:08Wallace. There was more of a folksy
- 4:11nature back then. Those guys were heroes.
- 4:13They were icons. And so let's think again about
- 4:16that. Dale Earnhardt junior.
- 4:18Jimmie Johnson era. Dale Earnhardt junior.
- 4:22He was the guy, even though he never won a championship, but
- 4:26like Carl Edwards to me was always really interesting.
- 4:28And what's the big part of that, though?
- 4:30The flip Carl Edwards could bring in the casual fan?
- 4:34That's, you might say it doesn't matter.
- 4:36Stuff like that matters. Look, I live in St.
- 4:38Louis, MO. A big reason people know Ozzie
- 4:40Smith. Ozzie Smith was a great baseball
- 4:42player, great shortstop, great defensive player.
- 4:44But that flip, that flip is memorable.
- 4:47When Carl would win a race, he would do the flip.
- 4:49It also didn't hurt what wasn't. Wasn't he on the cover of Men's
- 4:53Health or something like that? One of those magazines with his
- 4:55shirt off? Stuff like that attracts casual
- 4:59fans and for that one probably a bunch of women that weren't
- 5:01maybe into the sport. So that 2000s era to me, and
- 5:07This is why I think Kyle Busch is is spot on.
- 5:10You had all those iconic drivers that kind of all retired around
- 5:15the same time and then you had that era of of Tony Stewart was
- 5:20obviously really good and and really popular but still he
- 5:24didn't. He didn't have the same the same
- 5:27kind of flair of the guys like the Earnhardt's and the and the
- 5:31Jeff Gordon's of the world And then so the drivers now look
- 5:37Joey Logano is a great driver but I don't I don't think Joey
- 5:42Logano and guys these days, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch.
- 5:48They just, they don't they don't seem to have the same type of
- 5:51iconic stature as those guys from the Seventies, 80s and 90s.
- 5:57What do you think? Even though, look, Logano, Kyle
- 6:00Busch, Kyle Larson, you can make the case that those guys are
- 6:04just as good or better than a lot of the other names that I
- 6:08mentioned. But I'm just talking about from
- 6:10a from a marketing standpoint, they don't have the same juice.
- 6:15And I think about this sometimes when we post our videos with
- 6:18Kenny, and to me, it's about you got to be funny, you got to be a
- 6:22storyteller, you got to be interesting.
- 6:25You know, we did some interviews with with Ryan Blaney and
- 6:27William Byron, two of the biggest names in the sport,
- 6:32young guys up and coming guys, and those interviews didn't
- 6:36really do well. And there's nothing, nothing
- 6:39against those guys. But I just feel like people
- 6:42don't don't know them. They don't have those great
- 6:45stories. They they need to let their
- 6:48personalities come out even more.
- 6:50And they're trying by the way, like, I think those guys do have
- 6:52good personalities. What do you guys think?
- 6:54Do you think the sponsors are the sponsors not doing the same
- 6:57things they used to do in the 80s and the 90s with the
- 7:01activations to get people, whether it's commercials,
- 7:06whether it's, you know, those pop ups at stores where you'd
- 7:10see the driver. We've heard folks like Bobby
- 7:13Labonte talk about that. We're back in the day.
- 7:15You would see these drivers in the grocery store in terms of
- 7:18there to be a big cardboard cut out next to their product or
- 7:21their sponsor and all that. I feel like we don't see that as
- 7:26much anymore to me, the guy who who could be the guy that brings
- 7:31it back. So again, Hamlin's great, Kyle
- 7:35Busch is great. But the key you can make the
- 7:38argument, the key to NASCAR the last couple years of being
- 7:41really interesting is Ross Chastain and being the
- 7:44watermelon man. You got the good nickname and
- 7:47and smashing the watermelons again.
- 7:50It's one of those viral type moments just like Carl Edwards
- 7:53with the flip that people remember and I don't know how
- 7:57you guys think, but last year the whole season turned and it
- 8:01got less interesting when Rick Hendrick called out Ross
- 8:05Chastain for wrecking his cars. If you remember now, I'm not
- 8:09saying it's necessarily good on the track, but it was freaking
- 8:13interesting when he was wrecking Kyle Larson and he's wrecking
- 8:16the Hendrick cars and he's getting in a fight and punching
- 8:19Noah Gregson. And then ever since Rick
- 8:22Hendrick called him out, you saw to me a watered down version of
- 8:25Ross Chastain and the season wasn't as interesting until
- 8:29right at the end when look, he went toe to toe with Ryan Blaney
- 8:32in the championship race, didn't basically let him pass him and
- 8:36it was interesting again. So.
- 8:38So to me if Ross Chastain is in the mix, this version of NASCAR
- 8:43is a lot more interesting. But I do think for these drivers
- 8:50to to be anywhere close to the Earnhardt's and Petty's and and
- 8:54Mark Martin's and Rusty Wallace's of of back in the day
- 8:58and I don't, I don't think they ever really can be either.
- 9:00It's a different, it's a different era of media and all
- 9:03that. But they got to get out there.
- 9:05They got to be interesting on social media.
- 9:07They got to do commercials. That's why I think this Netflix
- 9:10thing was huge and I watched a couple episodes of that.
- 9:13They need to do more of that. They need to do that basically
- 9:16every single year. And I think, you know, have that
- 9:19different guys, different episodes and feature the
- 9:22different drivers. So I I think I think that's
- 9:25going to bring people back as well.
- 9:28But what do you guys think? Are you agreeing with Kyle
- 9:31Busch? Are you agreeing with anything
- 9:32that I said? I just feel like the drivers
- 9:35nowadays, they just don't they they can't grab the casual fan
- 9:42like they could in the 90s to me if if I if I didn't work
- 9:46basically where I'm covering NASCAR and watching NASCAR every
- 9:50week, every day. I don't know if I would know of
- 9:53any of these drivers. So I always like to look at it
- 9:56like this. I think a good gauge is it's
- 10:00kind of ask your mom. I always say like if your mom,
- 10:03who's not a sports fan, has has heard of these people right
- 10:08then, then the sport is doing something to market them
- 10:10properly. Like my mom would know if Tom
- 10:12Brady and Patrick Mahomes back in the day, she had probably
- 10:15heard of Richard Petty, Diller and hard Jeff Gordon.
- 10:17My mom has probably never heard of any NASCAR driver right now
- 10:21currently and you know she's 70 years old.
- 10:23But again, it's about attracting the casual fan.
- 10:26But Kyle Busch was talking about those die hard fans in the 90s
- 10:30and some of them not coming back.
- 10:32So look, if you're losing the casual fan, that's one thing.
- 10:36If you're losing the die hard fans from the 90s, that's a
- 10:39real, real problem. So, all right, a little bit of a
- 10:42rant, a little bit of discussion there.
- 10:44What do you think of what I said?
- 10:46Comment, like, subscribe. Let me know what you think.
- 10:49Reply in the comments. What do you agree with?
- 10:53What do you disagree with? Where am I wrong?
- 10:54Where am I right? What do you think?
- 10:56Again, I'm a 90s kid, grew up in the 90s, All those iconic
- 11:01drivers, the color schemes. Oh, here's another thing.
- 11:05As I'm about to wrap up, I forgot to mention.
- 11:07Look, I'm, I'm clearly not the first person to say this, but
- 11:10another big problem nowadays is obviously the changing of the
- 11:13cars in terms of the color schemes, the rap schemes, the
- 11:17paint jobs, whatever you want to call it.
- 11:19Just being able to watch a race real quick and look and see who
- 11:23that is. Oh, that's Dyl Earnhardt.
- 11:24That's Midnight Rusty Walls. Oh, that's Mark Martin.
- 11:28There's the 43 orange and blue Richard Petty nowadays.
- 11:33The fact that a lot of these cars you have to go.
- 11:35Who is that? Oh oh, what's his sponsor?
- 11:38You'll have 4-5, six different cars.
- 11:40And I think that's also a big problem.
- 11:42Just growing up and seeing Jeff Gordon, Rainbow Warrior.
- 11:46The Black Intimidator #3, Richard Petty with the blue and
- 11:51the orange. Jimmie Johnson, even with the
- 11:53lows, the Tony Stewart Home Depot car nowadays.
- 11:57I feel like for a while you had the FedEx with with Denny Hamlin
- 12:00and now you're not even seeing that as much.
- 12:02You're seeing the Mavis and what was his car the other day when
- 12:06he won. Was it an oil change.
- 12:08See, that's the thing I don't, I don't even remember, you know
- 12:11Chase Elliott with the Napa is usually one that you can point
- 12:14out most races. Joey Logano with the, you know,
- 12:19the, the Penske, the yellow, the Pennzoil.
- 12:23So that's that's another big problem I think is, is not being
- 12:27able to to know what the car is and and kind of have the shirts
- 12:32and all that and have the posters.
- 12:33We're back in the day. You knew exactly the color
- 12:36scheme of your guys. All right, I rambled on.
- 12:39Let me know what you think. Comment, like, subscribe.
- 12:41Appreciate it guys. See you later.
- 12:43Let me know what you think.
