- 0:06SPEAKER_00: What's up, everybody?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: This is our show about the intersection of sports and money.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: You know how we get down.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: We like to start every show with a number.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: This week the number is seven million.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And what's that all about, bro?
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Seven million, yeah.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: That's the number of viewers who watched the Hall of Fame game football, but the football game between uh, I don't know, I think the Cardinals were playing somebody.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I can't even remember who they were.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Cardinals and the Panthers.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And I can't believe seven million people didn't have anything better to do on a Saturday night than watch those two franchises.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I think it was a Thursday night, but still.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: But still.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: That's the lead into the weekend, so that's no better.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Still, but the fact that seven million people in August are watching the Hall of Fame game, it's just shocking, right?
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: The and so I looked it up, I was trying to get some comps for it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: So I looked it up.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: The uh Eastern Conference Finals between the Knicks and the Cavs this year, which was you know a sweep and wasn't the most exciting series, that averaged about 7.8 million.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: So it's roughly in the same area as the as the NBA Conference, Eastern Conference Finals, which is which is crazy.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: No, that's absurd.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: A meaningless NFL preseason game, most of the guys of whom you've never heard of playing, and you'll never see again, that drew the same number as the Eastern Conference Finals game.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and you got the only the story that came out of it is that, oh, look, Carson Beck looks really good.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, and I'm sure he did.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I didn't see the game.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: But Carson Beck is probably playing against inferior talent, you know, against the Panthers in a preseason game than he played against in Miami, Miami or Georgia scrimmages in college.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: And certainly inferior, you know, that then he played inferior talent than he played against, you know, Ohio State and Indiana last year in the in the CF season.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Well, not to go too far down the preseason football thing, but this came this used to come up all the time when I was covering the Cowboys on a daily basis in the preseason.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: You know, they ain't scheming nothing.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: They're playing the basic too deep coverage, basic man.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's nothing complicated about what you're looking at.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: They're not disguising coverages.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And so it becomes this if you can't look good in the preseason, the chances of you looking good in the regular season are none.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Because they aren't trying to trick you in the preseason, they're just letting they're just running their base offense, their base defense, and seeing if guys can execute.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And that's why you can come up with guys, put up big numbers in preseason, then disappear once the season starts, especially quarterbacks.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: So were you surprised then?
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: This is I didn't even think about this until just now.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Were you surprised then about 10 or 11 years ago when Dak Prescott looked amazing in preseason?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Is what I remember.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: And and he was kind of an afterthought when he was drafted.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: He looked amazing in preseason, and he was incredibly good his rookie year.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: But were you surprised when you saw him that he actually was that good?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, here's the deal on Dak Prescott.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It's a good story.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: We first noticed Dak Prescott in training camp.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not even sure if they had played the game yet, or if he they must have somebody must have been hurt because he was playing with Dez Bryant, or it was it was some point before the season, could have been an OTA, it's whatever.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: He throws a pass to Dez Bryant in two-minute drill.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: He's a rookie.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Dez Bryant's an all-pro Pro Bowl player.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And Dez catches the ball and he's supposed to get down immediately.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: He doesn't get down immediately for whatever reason.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And Dak comes up and just dog cusses him.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: And we're as Bryant, as a rookie in camp.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And we were like, oh, okay, this cat's a little different.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And then in the preseason, it wasn't about what he did statistically.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And I do this with all big time rookies.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I do it with Caleb Downs when I see him play.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: The only thing that matters if you're a rookie and you're starting in the league is, especially if they're counting on you, is you just look at guys and you go, does it look too big for them?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Does it look like they belong?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Does it look like they're and when you're when you're watching uh you know the practices, can you tell immediately or not?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: You can't.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Because they'll make if it's too big for them, even in practice, they'll be making mental mistakes.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: They just they it it's no different than when a five-star comes in and you're looking to see if he can contribute as a freshman.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Some of them you just show, like, oh, okay.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Uh we could always go back to if we want to reminisce for just a minute, you go back to when Dwayne Hastings came in against Michigan in the game, it's a dire moment.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: He steps up and just unleashes one and you to uh say it was Devin Smith or something.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Big third down pass catches it because uh the quarterback is out, and you're just like, oh, okay, it ain't too big for him.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: He ready, right?
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: He's ready to play.
- 4:45SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, it's whether it's a freshman in college or a rookie in the NFL, some of them just got that look like, okay, Des Bryant was the opposite.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: You can see the talent, but he would make all these mistakes as a young guy.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Uh and that's because it took him a minute for the game to slow down for him.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: It wasn't too big for him, but it had to slow down for him.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: But Dak, man, that thing was uh that thing slowed down pretty quickly.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: And then his confidence in the way he worked with the team, and the reason I talked to someone about this earlier today.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: The reason why Tony Romo didn't get his job back is not just because Dak was such an effective player.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Hold on a second, hold on a second.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Tony Romo's not gonna get his job back now either, but that's a different yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Um, it's because he was such a dynamic leader, and he took over the locker room.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I didn't realize that.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh no, he's a dynamic leader.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, I realize that now.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I didn't realize it was that clear and that evident in in uh training camp, what his rookie year.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and once he started playing, you couldn't take the job from him because you know, Jason Witten wasn't Tony Romo's best friend.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Dak, they make the announcement, Jason Whitten doesn't even say anything.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: So that so you know at that point.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: That's how you know there was nothing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Dak was the leader, and Dak had owned the locker room, and so yeah, so no, I wasn't surprised.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, some rookies you can tell, and um, you know, you need that if if for guys to elevate.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Don't always happen like that, but yeah, but uh, you know, Dak hadn't stopped playing since since he took over.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, he's he's been uh yeah, he's he's been if they have a defense, the Cowboys could actually be good this year.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: But but you look at the Hall of Fame game, seven million viewers.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: It was a story in media for a week.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Carson Beck, oh, is he gonna be a talent?
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Haynes King was you know, a guy from Georgia Tech who I'd never heard of was New Texas to Alberta.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: You know, I didn't know Haynes King, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Um and uh yeah, and so but people watched it, seven million people.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: I just can't I can't get over that.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: What it says to me though is that viewership this year of the NFL season might be just completely out of control.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: And I thought I thought we might have peaked in terms of viewership.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think so.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: No, uh, bottom line for me is the NFL just gave you one more example of why it is truly the 800-pound gorilla.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Um they've taken and you know, we'll talk about this later, but they've taken over Christmas Day now from the NBA.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: They just they just take what they want.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And uh at some point you wonder if they can take if it becomes oversaturated, but clearly we have not reached that point yet.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, but bottom line bottom line for me is that I think the I think the ratings of the NFL are going to be very strong this year, but I think there's momentum, even more so than I had thought, momentum around viewership of live sports in general, if you just look at the World Cup from the summer, also.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: So I think this bodes really, really well from a viewership point of view for the NFL this year.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Um let's get into the meat of the show, man.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Before we do, make sure you subscribe, rate, review.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: We could use all the help we can get.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Look at us.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Um and people keep emailing, people keep emailing us, and you can do that too.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Bottom line on sports at gmail.com.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: You can you can email us.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: We uh I haven't responded yet, but you can email.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Um the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the premier franchises in sports, up there with the Cowboys and the Yankees and the Boston Celtics, they just got sold for the second time in two years.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Did you see that coming?
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Well, did I see it coming?
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: I don't think anybody saw it coming, you know, except for maybe Bob Iger.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: That's the only one who kind of had an idea that it might be coming.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: But it's the second time.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: I I looked it up, it's 14 months.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Jeez.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: So 14 months, and it's sold.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: It went, was it 10 billion the first when it was originally sold to the this guy, Mark Walter, who has a holding company called uh TW, I can't remember if it's TWC or TWG Global.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: And TWG Global, it's a holding company that has a bunch of other companies inside of it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's CEO of Guggenheim as well.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: And 10 billion when he bought it and he sold his stake for 12.5 billion.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: That's 25% gain, two and a half billion dollars in 14 months.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: That sounds like a good investment to me.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: I think it's an accidental investment.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: I think he, well, I think he's I think he he's under a federal investigation for some related party transactions within his companies.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: And I think this is a convenient way for him to get out of it, because that federal investigation, you never know.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: He just he might need the cash later.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Or or conspiratorially, maybe the NBA and the other owners kind of really didn't want him to be an owner anymore because he was under some sort of federal cloud.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Again, total speculation on my part, but it I think if you get an offer of two and a half billion dollars more than you paid for it 14 months ago, even if it's the Lakers, and especially if you're under federal investigation, I think that's why the sale happened.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I mean, I think um anytime uh and you know, the interesting thing to me is that most of these sales, if you look at CL Seahawks, that thing took years.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: You know, most of these sales, uh, even when the Cowboys were sold way back when in 1989, that took several months to get done.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: This thing, and Ramona Shelborn from ASPN has a P side on it that you can check out on ASPN.com.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: This thing happened in literally like 72 hours, which is unheard of.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Okay, here's what here's I just thought of.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, we've had two transactions related to the to the Lakers in the last couple of years that came out of nowhere and happened in a couple of days.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Luca getting traded, and this.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's impartable.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: I hadn't thought of that until just now.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Wow and that is that is is crazy.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: And by the way, a lot of people are questioning the value of the Luca trade now.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Well, that's because they haven't built a team around him.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Luca is the problem is not Luca.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: You just have to build the proper team around Luca.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: If you do that, you'll get where you're trying to go.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: If you don't, it may be a series of great nights for him, and the team may just be average.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: I I know I know you're a Luca fan.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I think it I think Luca might be the problem.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: But that's for that's a that's a topic for another that's a conversation for another day.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: So so are Lakers worth$12.5 billion, do you think?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: A wise man once told me you're worth what everybody, what anybody uh what the market tells you you're worth, yeah.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: So I thought, I guess, yes, they're definitely worth that.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: I might have been surprised they didn't go for more.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Because again, they're one of the iconic franchises in America.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So if they went that's known all over the world.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but if they want so what do you think then?
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: If they went on the open market, if it was out there that Walter was selling, what do you think they would have gone for?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Dude, I could, I mean, we're pinching pennies here.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I can see them going for another uh two and a half, three million, fifteen, sixteen.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Because again, this was sale.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: This wasn't like, hey, everybody, I'm ready to sell, come make me an offer.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Because I guarantee you, I guarantee you, and I don't know these things.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Somebody read the Wall Street Journal or something the morning of the sale and said, the Lakers were for sale?
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: It's like, it's like, what would you if Luca was on the open market?
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: What would Luca have gone to?
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: No, exactly.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: There's somebody screaming at night like Luca was available.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: This this and this form.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And so somebody would have woke up screaming, talking about I can't believe they sold the Lakers for only 12 and a half million.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I'd have spent whatever, whatever, um, to get a crack at the Lakers because you know you can do so much with the franchise if you're smart.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: And um, I think uh they ended up uh with Kushner and uh Bob Iger, who used to run ESPN a couple different times.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all Disney, yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Bigger, I was gonna say bigger than ESPN.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And so if you put Disney at ESPN and think about it, he should be able to put together a team that knows how to maximize whatever the Lakers can do.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: There's no reason, really, the Lakers, their history, their success, shouldn't be able to kind of do what the Cowboys do in terms of own everything that has to do with marketing and making money in an NBA landscape.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Well, the the Lakers are both a business, and you're you're gonna get savvy, savvy people in business who want to try to make money.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: But the Lakers, like a lot of other media organizations, including uh media, uh, sports uh sports franchises, uh like the Cowboys, for example, are vanity plays, are plays, and I think that that's why the value of them is often not, it won't, it won't rely on traditional financial metrics to determine the value of these businesses.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: There's there's other metrics, there's other psychological things that and and factors that that come into play when people when people buy them and and pay this amount of money for them.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: So I think you're I think you're probably right that if it was on the open market, first of all, it would have been there would have been an enormous bidding war for this thing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: No, there's no doubt about that.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And uh it'll be interesting to see if they make any, okay, they sold a team.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Will there be substantial changes?
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Will it be negligible?
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Will we not even know?
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Because if you think about it, Jerry Jones is a very visible uh owner.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: The other 31 NFL owners in general are not very visible.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, how many owners can you name?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I probably named 10, maybe 32 teams.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I mean, yeah, maybe.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's let's go through this very quick exercise.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: You got Jerry Jones, you got uh well, no, he's dead.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Uh you think I'm the one who's I was thinking Wayne Hezinger, but he's dead.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Steven Ross.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Uh Ross, right, the Pagula family owns the Bills.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Jess Pagula, her her dad.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, I don't want to do this anymore.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Me, me neither.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: I'm like really drawing, I'm really drawing a blank.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: But maybe what I'm saying is we don't really and now now I go, how many NBA owners do you can you nay?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: And I would say Mark, well, he ain't the owner no more.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Um and I forgot.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I know the Maveriz owner, but I'm Matt Ishby.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Matt Ishby owns the Pistons.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: That much I know.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Well, no, because you know I was the uh Yeah, you you know the owners who either make the big mistake or or are you know intentionally in the public eyes.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: James Dolan.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Of course, James Dolan.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: But but what's interesting, what's interesting about the the Lakers and Walter is that they also own essentially the Dodgers.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: And from what I can tell, and from what I understand, they were trying to almost merge the two organizations in a certain way.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Not not they were obviously distinct, but there was clearly philosophy and clearly some overlap between the Dodgers and the um the Dodgers and the Lakers.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: So do you think that this means that the Dodgers might be on the block soon?
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't think so.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Well, just because you I mean Stan Crockey's got two or three teams.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: I think he owns the Rams and the Niggas.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't I don't either.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: I don't either, but but you know, the Dodgers, I think that if if you've if you follow the Dodgers lately, the Dodgers have not been good since the All-Star break.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: And while while they're still you know way ahead of you know the other teams and will we'll you know certainly make the playoffs.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're a shoe in to win the World Series this year at all.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I I think they look old and they look brittle and they have a lot of deferred money out there.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: I I would say the Dodgers are just they're the Dodgers, as is uh I'm not surprised.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: The Dodgers probably have fallen into uh what's the word for basically they're waiting for the playoffs.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Like they're bored with the regular season, they're they're waiting for the playoffs.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's just an accent to get in.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe, maybe.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: I think it's more than that when I watch them.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: I just don't think they're I think a lot of the players who they thought were gonna be good aren't very good.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that also be a problem.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: A lot a lot of their pitchers are either hurt or or struggling.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Um they they picked up Scoobyl, who's a great, who's a great pitcher, but you know, I watched Scoobyl's first uh you know, uh first outing with the Dodgers, and he he was he he was good, but the Dodgers can't hit.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: And uh so I don't know.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: But I I I'm I'll be interested to see if and I don't have any indication that this is the case, but if the Dodgers came up for sale, especially if there are deeper pro and I have no idea what Walter's problems are, and there may not be well, yeah, you know, but if but if but if he's you know but if he's seen this had you know uh some sort of financial problems that may reflect poorly on Major League Baseball, you never know.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: No, and you know, and again, you know, as you talk about that, you never know if and he may just decide I want I just want to be more liquid, so you know I give it up.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I've I've owned it for a few years, I've gotten all the love I need for it, but I just want to be liquid so I can make different sorts of moves.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, because uh we all know people's got money on paper, but don't have money on them.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:23unknown: Right.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: And he may he might need the liquidity for all we know.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: And the question is really, if the Dodgers win the one three the World Series three years in a row, he might just say, I'll pull a John L way and I'll go out on top.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: You never know.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: You never know.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Now, again, I don't know if any of that is possible, but I think it's I think it's something worth uh I think it's certainly something worth paying attention to right now, for sure.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh the bottom line for me, man, is uh the Lakers are iconic, and I thought they could have gone for even more.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but uh bottom bottom line for me, very, very similar.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, if the Lakers were on the open market, um, this would have been one of the biggest stories of the year.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: And I totally agree with you, it would have probably gone for at least 15 billion for sure.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Well, maybe not for sure, but it would have gone for well north of 12 and a half billion.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Uh well, that's a good segue into this.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: NFL also released its uh uh Sportico.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Sportico.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Sportico released uh its findings for the most valuable NFL franchises.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: No surprise, Dallas Cowboys up top, I think at what 550 billion?
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: 15 and a half billion.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: 15 and a half billion.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Uh can you name can you name the top five?
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Oh in the NFL.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: I've just pulled them up here.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: According to Sportico listed uh earlier this week, the NFL franchise valuations rankings.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And so the Patriots should be up there.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Patriots are fourth.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: I had a weird feeling like the Jets were up there.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: Jets are fifth?
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Like, why are the Jets fifth?
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Because they're in the New York market.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: All right, does that mean the Giants are up there?
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Giants are third.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: So I'm missing number two.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: And that should tell you, you should be able to figure out number two because you've got the two New York teams in there.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, the LA Rams?
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: LA Rams are number two.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Well, there you go.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And again, which one of those?
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: I guess Dallas is a big enough market now.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but the Cowboys are uh they're they're still way ahead of everybody else in terms of marketing and all the things.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: The Cowboys transcend uh uh market size.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Cowboys are you know a much bigger brand.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Um, but 15 and a half billion.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: So if they went on the open market today, Jerry said, Hey Jacques, I'm gonna listen, I got a scoop for you, I'm gonna sell the team.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: And you did some reporting.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: What do you think you'd what do you think you'd you'd find out?
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: You think 30?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, so let's so the so the link you get from being a cowboy's owner.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: So so the you you mentioned earlier in the show the uh the Seahawks went for 9.6 billion.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: They were just sold recently, and and they went through a long process of of a sale.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: They went for 9.6 billion, which reflected a 46% increase year over year.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: So that's sort of the you know, these are not these are all estimates.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: So you don't know, you know, you don't know the that so the Seahawks are probably the most current uh current team that we can really look at their value.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: So they're at Seahawks are at 9.6 billion and up 46% year over year.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: You know, if if the uh you know if if that's the case with if that's the case with the Cowboys and they were up another 50%, yeah, that they're two million, right?
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're they're north of 20 million.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: So it's it's remarkable.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: But but it also means that the Lakers value was that it's 12.5 billion.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: The Rams are 12.7 billion.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: That means the Lakers are more valuable than every other.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: NFL team, there's no way.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: I don't believe that.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I don't believe that either.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Put things off in an open market, I think NFL teams would trump everything.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: It's just like building money.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: I mean printing money.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: The only thing is, can you come up with the money to buy it?
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Because everybody would.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Do you know enough people to come together to put the money together to buy it?
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Because it's a guaranteed dub.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: You're going to make money.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: It's just, you know, it's a great investment.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: It's a great vanity play, even if you own the Cardinals.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Um so okay, so what are the what are the uh what's the least, what are the three least valuable franchises, do you think?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: That's a good question.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: I'd say the Cardinals are are amongst the least.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Cardinals are 28th out of 32.
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: So there's four teams below the Cardinals.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Uh man.
- 22:58SPEAKER_02: I would have guessed Carolina, but Carolina is actually 26th.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Where's Tampa Bay?
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Tampa Bay is probably middle of the pack, I would guess.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: I want to say New Orleans, but it seems like they might be higher.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: New Orleans is 31st, 7.5 billion.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, that was really my first guess was New Orleans.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Uh when I tell you the bottom four, Jacksonville, 7.9 billion.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: That would have been my second guess.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: I've got around to them eventually.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: The Colts.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: I I thought them.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: I really did.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: I thought the Colts, but then I thought, well, maybe not because they've been around so long, they may have more value.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: And the leak, the least valuable team used to have a quarterback from August Stana play for them, a guy named Ken Anderson.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: You know what, man?
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: I almost said Cincinnati.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: But then I thought, maybe they're better than that, but they're not.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: They don't invest any money in their team either.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: So uh but but uh but if you if you're telling me that the let's look at the let's look at the Panthers, right?
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Or we'll look at the Jaguars.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: Jaguars 7.9 billion.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: You're telling me the Cowboys are only twice as valuable as the No.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Right, exactly.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: No, right, right.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: So that's what I'm saying.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: In an open market where everybody knows it's available, the numbers just just would just skyrocket because somebody wants to win.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And somebody wants it, and somebody's going to do whatever they can do to get it, and that's just going to drive the price up.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: When do valuations peak?
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: What's going to be the turning point where valuations peak?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Uh see the thing about it is normally I would say if they if they got a situation like baseball where there's some labor strife, but the NFL players and and and owners have figured out oh, there's enough, there really is enough money for everybody.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And no, it's not perfect, but from a player perspective, you now have a number of players making 25 and 30 million a year.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: It's not the NBA, but you can get paid in the NFL now, you know, money that's that's hard to blow uh in a lifetime.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Um, and so you know, as long as they keep it like that.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: I think uh I think the thing that we talk about all the time is oversaturation.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's exactly what I think.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: At some point, you just gave it too too much to us, and and we just quit caring so much.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: But dude, that's it's uh I don't know that they can give you enough, and that's what they do.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: They keep testing the here's here's what might happen, man.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I think they gotta be real careful about they they have this boner to expand into Europe, and like you're just being greedy, you don't need Europe.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't see the EPL going, hey, we gotta get us a team in New York.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: No, the EPL is fine.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like you don't we'll dip over here and play, but we ain't we we don't need the US, we don't need North America, we're good over here, and I think it's dangerous uh just just to want to go to Europe because the time zones don't fit.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: It just doesn't make sense to be trying to have teams over there, uh you know, taxes, money, citizenship, all of that stuff is a pain in the ass that you don't need.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: They seem determined to have it, but you don't need it.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that yeah, I agree.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: I I was gonna say two things that I would be concerned about were oversaturation and what I would say is internat over over international expansion.
- 26:37SPEAKER_02: I think having a couple of London games or a couple of European games is good precisely for the reason that you say, because you can get early morning TV windows in the United States.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: People people watch that.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: I can tell you, I was in, shockingly enough, I was in Las Vegas uh for one of a it was what Kansas, this is a couple years ago, Kansas City was playing a London, a London-based game.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: So I was in Las Vegas, and those games usually start around 9.30 Eastern, so that's 6.30 in the morning Las Vegas time.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: I happened to be I was staying at a casino in in LA and in LA, in Las Vegas, and I happened to be awake at 6.30 in the morning, not because I was gambling or up the night before, because I'm the most boring human being on the planet, but because I wake up early and I said, Oh, I'm gonna go, I think I'm gonna go eat.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: I actually said, I think I'm gonna go eat breakfast in the casino, and maybe I'll maybe I'll you know or maybe I'll wander over to the sports book.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: There can't be anybody there.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: I'll wander over to the sports book and eat breakfast.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: The place was swarming with people.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: The sports book was swarming.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Everybody was watching.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: I don't know if if you spend much time in these sports books, but usually have these gigantic screens in the middle, you know, and the place was completely packed at 6:30 in the morning on a random, you know, Sunday in November watching the London Games.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: So that's when it, and certainly the number, there's good viewership numbers, but that's that's when it hit me.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: And I said, you know, Europe makes sense because that's a window that's untapped.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: Like you were talking earlier about, oh, let's have the NFL take over Christmas Day, because that's a window that the NFL hasn't tapped into yet.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: It's amazing.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: It's it's amazing.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: That oh that was I'll never forget that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: It was Jacques, it was swarming with people.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: You would have thought it was, you know, 11 30 at night.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: It was swarming, and it was the sports books that were swarming.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: The sports book was just swarming.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: It was it was amazing.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not even surprised, man.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: I'm not even surprised.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, man, Cowboys could easily go for 30 million if uh the Lakers went for 12 and a half.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: But bottom line for me is Jacques, I think you and I should get a consortium together and we should go by the Bengals because they're the cheapest team.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: That's the only one we could maybe afford.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I've got 100K I can invest.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: All right, I've got 101.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: So we're we're at 200k, we're at 201,000.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: So we just we we need about we need about 10 billion more, and I think we're there.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Uh so if anybody's listening, you know, we're we're we're willing to be uh minority partners.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, me literally.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Uh uh that moves to our favorite topic of the week, the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Pre-season all-American team comes out.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Two buckeyes on it.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, ESPN released its preseason all-American team and two buckeyes.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: You know, one is Jeremiah Smith.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Julian Saiyan is the other one?
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Julian Saiyan is the other one.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Makes sense.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Uh the best news I heard about Julian Saiyan, and I haven't seen it, I just heard it or read it.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Is they say he looks like a grown-ass man now.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: He needs to.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Uh his teammate, one of the offensive linemen, said Julian looked like a little French girl last year.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: And he said, now he looks like a man.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And uh now this is like, and this came up because and I I didn't look hard, I did a very cursory look.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: But this is the time of year, and Ohio State did it with somebody else where where they've been in the weight room all year and they show you their picture from their freshman year when they showed up and then the end of their you know going into the sophomore year where they've had a full, entire, complete offseason.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you're like, oh my God, some of these guys, and so they basically say that about saying they say he's up to 210 pounds, and he looks like a grown-ass man because he probably played at 195 or 185 last year.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Uh let's hope, let's hope.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it's it's amazing.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm sort of the typical pessimistic Ohio State football fan, even though I know it's shocking, even though they have, you know, year in and year out our fantastic team.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Although we have to talk about we have to talk about college grades in a minute here, but but but uh uh because you saw the story that I sent you the other day about you know college grades.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I saw there's a story out that says Arthur Smith is impressed by Julian saying that's why he wanted to be in Columbus.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: That that scares me, you know.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Well, Arthur Smith scares me.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm saying.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: If Arthur Smith is assessing him that way, that worries me more than anything else.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: To me.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Now, hopefully, now he keeps getting hired, so you know, clearly somebody likes him at the level.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, uh that'll translate.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: And you know, I didn't like the Matt Patricia hire.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Matt Patricia turned out to be a terrific hire last year.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: We'll see if we can replicate it.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: So hopefully I will feel the same way about the Arthur Smith hire.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: I hope so.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: When it's all said and done like that.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a terrible hire.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Look at Ryan Day.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: It turned out to be a great thing.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Uh it's yeah, so let's let's hope but but I when I when I see a lot of the preseason non-Ohio State pessimistic fans like me, Ohio State's getting a lot of love across the board.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: People are seeing again, I'm not I'm not trying to be, you know, so negative.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: They have a very difficult schedule, and I think that they're they'll they have a I think they're 50-50 to make the playoff.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but if they do make the playoff, they're not gonna be, you know, they're gonna be a 6'78, they're not gonna be in the top four.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I I don't uh let me see, there's there's a couple ways to look at that.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, somebody said some uh somebody, and I can't remember who said this, otherwise I'd give them credit.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: They said last year Ohio State was such a dominant team, they really didn't get tested very much until they played Indiana, uh, until they played uh Miami.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: They go, that won't be the case this year.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: They go, if they can't win enough games, whether it's nine or whether it's ten, to get into the tournament, um, especially if they struggle a little bit early and then come on late, um, they're going to be a tough out because they will have been battle tested and uh you know played some of the top teams in the country.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Um now in doing so, I I did have one thought about Arthur Smith.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Uh you and I both have uh expressed uh concern about their ability to run the ball and a run game and this and that.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I will give Arthur Smith credit.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: He his team do know how to run the ball.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, that's why I didn't like him.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Sometimes they run the ball too much, they're boring.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: But if he can figure out how to get a running game going with Ohio State, um we know they can throw the ball.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Uh if he can get a running game going, that will give them the balance they need.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And and again, if you go back to when they won the national championship two years ago, it's because they had two dynamic running backs and you didn't catch a you never caught a break because one of them was always on the field.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: And and you had a monster quarterback who could pick up uh, you know, who could pick up three three to five yards at any time.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Because again, Will Howard was not a great quarterback.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: No, he was he was a perfect fit for that team because he's a veteran and he was a big guy at 6'5, 2'5.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And he could run.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: He was he was yeah, yeah, he could run, yeah.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: If you needed 10 yards, he could scramble and get you 10.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, they didn't have that last year, or they did have it in Lincoln Kleinholtz, but for whatever reason, they got him already.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: I know, I know and refused to put him in.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I know one of the great mysteries I have.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: I know he's he's at what he's at Louisville this.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: He transferred to Louisville, I believe.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: I think he's good.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: I think he's a good, I think he's a good player.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Um get a chance to play.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Now, now the other story that is not down the center of what we usually talk about, but I had texted you the other day is that starting in 2027, and you you gave, I thought you gave a much more colorful response than I'm given.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Starting in 2027, the the Ohio State's rival school uh to the north.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, to the north, you know who they are, um, is going to not give grades to freshmen in the first semester for for mental health reasons.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: And you're gonna get either and they're not even doing it past, they're not even calling it pass fail.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: They're calling it pass or no credit.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: So, what do you think about that, Mr.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Taylor?
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: Dude, you know, man, we're raising a society of soft people.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: But I am this is what I wanted.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: I remember driving, I remember driving my son to school, not to school, I remember driving him to football practice in the seventh grade, his first practice, and he played, he was going into a school where they are a Texas football power, and he had played football his whole life, wanted to play, was all he's I this is what I want to do.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And I remember that drive, and I said, Hey, I just want to make you aware of this.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: The time where everybody gets to play is over, man.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: You've always been good, you've always been a starter, but I I promise you if you play hard and do what you can, you'll you'll be fine.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: But the coach is not gonna put you in the game because everybody needs to play.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: You have to earn what you get and just be aware of that and do you know, do the best you can, we'll see how it turns out.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: But I wanted to remove the illusion of well, how come I uh how come I didn't get to play?
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Because you ain't good enough.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Or you didn't show the coach something he wanted to see.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: And um, I always felt good about that.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: And when he got to play, he knew he had earned whatever he got, and there were no participation trophies.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Participation trophies aren't bad at a certain level, but by the time you get into high school and college, man, you have to learn how to deal with life and the uh the disappointment of life, the frustration of life, the unfairness of life.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: It's just all part of the process.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've I've dealt with rejection my entire life.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: I'm used to it by now.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's I just remember I was texting somebody.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I remember I was in a class at Ohio State.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: I was a I was an econ major at Ohio State, and I was in some econ class.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: It was I wasn't an entry-level class, it was sort of one of the higher level classes.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: And there it was, but Ohio State's especially at the time, is Ohio State's a huge school, and you had big classes.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: So I was in a class of 80 people, okay, in an econ class, which is a you know, you know, it was you know a medium-sized class, probably a four or five hundred-level class that I was in.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Um and I had the fifth highest grade in the class.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: I had a it was somewhere in like I I want to say 94 or 95 in the class.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: Um and I figured I'm I'm in good shape.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: I'll definitely get an A in this class.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: And I got an A minus in the class.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: And the and I was like, how did I get an A minus in here?
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I get like a 95.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: How first of all, my my of course, my obnoxious self said, how could I be fifth in a class of 80 and I'm at Ohio State?
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: No offense to Ohio State, but I always kept saying to myself, how can I be fifth in a class, you know, and not not in the top one or two?
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: But that's just me being, you know, uh obnoxious and and over overestimating my own abilities.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but no, but and seriously, like being fifth, and I got an A minus.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: And the professor said, Look, we have a strict thing here that we give 10% of the kids get A's in the class.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: So we give eight A's, you give eight, you know, four A's and four A minus, and you were the fifth and you got an A minus.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Okay, but you know, it's fine.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: You know, that's those are the rules.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: And you know, I was I was like, that sucks, but you know, it is what it is.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: Can you imagine if that happened now?
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: I think the school might shut down.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: Not Ohio State, but some of these schools might shut down.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I was a college professor adjunct uh for 13 years at SMU teaching non-sports journalism, and I had all kinds of students, and I used to tell them, you get what you earn.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: I'll help you along the way.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: I want you to succeed.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: But ultimately, at the end of the day, you get what you earn.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, and sometimes they didn't.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: I I only gave out very few C's because I tried to tell people I tried to help people do the best that they could.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: But uh one time this this and I used to tell everybody it's 20% off if you don't turn it in on time, and we only had five or six things do all year.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: So some young lady turned her project in late, so it's 20% off, but it was the final project, and then she got a B on it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: So she went from like 83 to 63, which meant she didn't pass.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, managed not to me.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: Right, and so I got a call from the dean.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Hey, uh, what kind of student is so-and-so?
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: I said, Oh, she's fine.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: She turned a late project in, that's why she did this.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, would you mind if we if we adjusted the grade?
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: I said, Y'all can really, I mean, I don't care.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: You can do literally whatever you want to do.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: I was just following what was supposed to be done.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: And she'll learn in life that if you don't turn in your boss's big project so that he can have it at the meeting for the next day, you might get fired.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: You're not lasting long, yeah, you're not lasting long, yeah.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: But so that's what it was.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: So so I think this whole thing about not so getting pass or no credit for the first semester so students can adjust to college life and and you know they can stave off sort of any sort of mental health crisis.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think you know, it's not not to sound like like this old curmudgeonly guy, but but but I don't I I don't think that's good for the kids.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: You know, that's what I'm saying.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: I just don't think it's good.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: I just don't think it's good for the kids.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: It's not not that I just I do want to poke fun at this at the school for doing it, but but fundamentally, I don't think that's I don't think that's good for the kids.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: And so so they experience it the second semester.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: What's the difference between three months?
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: No, you get you know, you uh what you can do is give them a better idea of understanding what the first year of college is like.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: Hey, nobody's holding your hand, all these kinds of things.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Hey, I know you want to go out to the bars, and if you want to do that, you gotta understand you really don't want eight o'clock classes, you want this, you know, there's a whole rhyme of reason how you do everything.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, uh, I I and I was the kind of kid, I took all my classes in the afternoon, and some people thought I was, what are you doing?
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: And I used to tell people, like, oh, when we have a test, I like to get up and have the whole day study for the test.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: I don't like to prove, I don't like to do all nighters.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: I like to go to sleep, get up at six in the morning and study till noon for my one o'clock test.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why I did it.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Or if I have a paper due, I can get up and I got all day to finish it up and sleep on it and see what it needs to be improved.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: But that was me.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Uh my son had a bunch of eight o'clock classes, and he said, Dad, I can't do those.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Uh right, a lot of like 10 and 11 and 12.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: But he figured out what worked for him.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: And that's what, guess what?
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: That's what college is about.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: What works for me.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:04SPEAKER_02: So uh, yeah, I I I I don't know.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I think the uh you know, the opportunity I do understand there is an adjustment period and there is an issue, and there there probably needs to be more help for the students as they you know transition from high school to college, but that seems to be way too much in one direction for me.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, blue, I laugh at you.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: But bottom bottom line for me, uh I'm still pessimistic about Ohio State, but I I may be alone.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: I may, I'm I'm quickly thinking I'm I'm one of the few.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and that may be a good thing.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Hey, uh for Jeremy Pink, I'm John Dun Bailey.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: Don't forget to subscribe, rate review.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: We can use that to help we get.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: We'll talk to you next week.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: All right.
