- 0:44But today we're doing top five hip hop beats all time. Now like
- 0:53what I did with my last top fives, this is probably more so not
- 0:58only just favorites of mine, but definitive for me. Right and maybe some
- 1:07of these are yours also, maybe one or two in your top five.
- 1:11It's tough to do these lists. It's even tougher to do it when it's
- 1:17only five. There are millions of beat I could sit here all day and
- 1:19talk about some of the greatest pieces of all times, like I love the
- 1:23Benjamin's Beat. I love it and it's no, it's no smoking mirrors like
- 1:29yo. So he took sample and put it over and he hit the No.
- 1:36It's just a groove that works, that affects me as a human being
- 1:41when you hear it. I love it New York State of Mind. Every
- 1:46time I hear that, I just want to go buy fresh bed Thames Black
- 1:49hoodie gets some overly baggy fatigues walk like a bowl legged around. I live
- 1:55in the suburbs now, y'all, so it ain't like the flack or just
- 1:59walk around. I'm like, like, I got the ratchet on me.
- 2:02I want snow to fall from the sky even though it's summer, because it's
- 2:07hoodie season. When I heard New York Stateium, you feel me. So
- 2:10it's like beats that connect with you in ways that sometimes like here's an example,
- 2:17y'all, And this goes for any genre. But have you ever heard
- 2:22a song where the beat was so good you weren't really even listening to the
- 2:28lyrics, yet when you went back you kind of had to catch it.
- 2:30But it's like it's like an overload of your senses when you hear the beat.
- 2:36Like some people know, sometimes we had crazy beating hippopular, like somebody
- 2:40could be talking like, Yo, they're shooting me. You're like, what
- 2:46right? Like wake me up out of my trance. It's beats that do
- 2:50that for you in some ways beats for me that when I heard it,
- 2:54I was I had to think to myself, how did he make that?
- 3:00These are my top five beats of all time? Let's start right at the
- 3:04top riza with cream past us everything around me. No, When I heard
- 3:10that beat, I was like, this beat is impossible. I know producers,
- 3:16like now all he did was take it that I don't care, Okay.
- 3:20When I heard it, I was like, I don't understand this lazy
- 3:27piano. It just it just was so like you see, I'm getting caught
- 3:32up now. I can't even explain it right, use your education, that's
- 3:37all. But it was one of those things. When I first heard it,
- 3:40it was it was unexplainable. It was like, Yo, that beat
- 3:46is crazy and I don't even know why it's that good? Like what sample
- 3:50is that? Is he playing the piano? What made him come up with
- 3:53this? This? This is not traditionally a hip hops down, but it
- 4:00is. It was like grunge for hip hop. It was just dump.
- 4:06That's when we look cash, lose everything around brig get the bunny dollar dollar
- 4:12bill, y'all. I grew up on the crown side. I can lose
- 4:15your time side staying alive. It was no job, had second hand mans
- 4:19bounced from old man, and then we moved to farign Land, a young
- 4:24youth rocking the gold too low boots. I'm telling you, man, it
- 4:30was just a feeling. And to me, that's why it's one of the
- 4:34greatest hipirects of all time because guess what happens that record was released at what
- 4:40ninety three? That very same feeling comes over me falls sorry when I hear
- 4:48it today. Okay, it just does. It's that infectious, it's that
- 4:56impactful, and I think, hands down it gotta be for a hip hop
- 5:01fan who liked it all, not just one region versus another reason or a
- 5:06region or you know, only like a certain group or whatever. You just
- 5:12gotta recognize it as for what it is. And Riza has so many that
- 5:16I can go to, but I have to stick to one. Let me
- 5:21just mention other ones like Triumph and Liquid Sauce, like Beats was. I
- 5:26was just like yo, Rizza is crazy, so Cream is definitely one of
- 5:31the greatest beats of all time. I don't care what you have to say.
- 5:34Next up, DJ Premier, Massive Peal, DJ Premier, I can
- 5:42go down. The whole group Home album is the top five beats of all
- 5:46time. Okay, Gangstar Loan has a number of songs that he's produced that
- 5:55are greatest, that can be the greatest beats of all time, beats he's
- 5:59produced for us. But it's like, for me, it's just that crazy.
- 6:02For mass appeal, it's one of those records that does the same thing
- 6:08that said about Cream. It's just it's just especially when I saw the video
- 6:14and Google had to snorkle on with the fur and the snow and it was
- 6:17dark suckers be like playing themselves that had mass appeal and the scratching of the
- 6:24youngster's vocals in there, and it's called mass appeal. Like this is what
- 6:33when you see old heads getting excited about nineties hip hop or getting mad about
- 6:40y'all not understanding potency of the music back then versus now, this is kind
- 6:45of what they're talking about. And to be fair, there were generations who
- 6:48we do the same thing with us, right, you know what I'm saying,
- 6:51you hear what Marmy doing right there? Like, yes, we do.
- 6:56They're about timed up. It's the same feeling. It's a beat that's
- 7:00so infectious, song that speaks to you so deeply, to the point where
- 7:08you just gotta hear rewind because you just want to hear it again. Massive
- 7:12Pill just evokes that kind of emotion. Like I always joke around and tell
- 7:16people, if you want to see me getting because I like a lot of
- 7:20new music, and I bote new music now more than I do some of
- 7:24the old stuff, I go back to it. But if you want to
- 7:28see me getting my nineties bag, or you want to see my actual age
- 7:31besides my gray hairs, that Max Pill come on. You want to see
- 7:39what region I'm from. Watch the dance I do. When watch the dance
- 7:43I do? When that come on, you be like, oh, yeah,
- 7:45you're from the old from the OJI from the nineties. Yeah, when
- 7:49mass Apell's on, That's that's just where I go with it, all right.
- 7:54Next, elevators are outcast. I did not know outcasts could make this
- 8:01kind of record, let alone make the beat. I was convinced. I
- 8:05was like, it's organized noise, right, like no outcast, Andre Benjamin
- 8:13and Big Boy they did it. When I heard that beat, I was
- 8:18like, Yo, this beat is like dark, sinister, but smooth,
- 8:26like I want to say, thoughtful or cerebral, I should say. It's
- 8:33just one of those records where you have to pay attention to the lyrics because
- 8:39of the groove. The groove is so you so much into the groove where
- 8:43you just sort of like, man, this joint is just crazy, like
- 8:48it's I don't know what to think. I don't know what to think about
- 8:54this record. When I first heard it, I was like, this is
- 8:56the same outcast from Southern Playlist And the way they were spitting on that record,
- 9:03you know what I'm saying, what they because they don't get like everybody
- 9:05give Andre three thousand props because it's kind of a thing to do. But
- 9:11the way Andre and Big Boy their flows, like you can't nail the pattern
- 9:16down. They just flowing. Like to me, it's not just the beat,
- 9:24but the beat set the tone for what the lyrics were on all of
- 9:28these albums, I mean, all these records, and Elevator is just a
- 9:35record that every time it's on, like I can't help it. I gotta
- 9:39I gotta listen to it. I gotta hear it because it's just that crazy
- 9:45to me, you know what I'm saying, It just is so then you
- 9:48have it, next step Quiet Storm. By having it now I know again.
- 9:56Unfortunately, because these things just happened and everything not just hip hop or
- 10:03sports or whatever. Sometimes there's just a consensus that Ill Manic is the greatest
- 10:09hip hop album of all time, and it feels like there's no discussion or
- 10:13debate, and it's like, well, no, this one is better,
- 10:16you know whatever. Some people don't believe that. It's just that's what we
- 10:20say. One hundred and three thousand is the best, and he's the best
- 10:24out of the group by default. I feel like people do that with Shook
- 10:31Ones. When I first heard Shook Ones, I thought it was dope,
- 10:33but what brought it home for me was what Prodigy was doing. So all
- 10:37the killers and the one hundred dollars billis to rail. You ain't got no
- 10:43feelings. It's like that whole build into the BA I love the beat or
- 10:48christ Storm's different and I heard the original christ Storm that was just Prodigy on
- 10:54it on a mixtape, and I couldn't believe, even though some producers would
- 11:01say, oh, you do nothing crazy just but I had never heard anybody
- 11:05use White Lines in that way. Like the record White Lines. It's a
- 11:09dope record, a dope beat in itself, you know, grand Master Flash
- 11:13and Furious five. But Havoc turned it into this dark Havoc m P right
- 11:20Havoc with the beat. But Prodigy turned it into like this dark journal like
- 11:28in a lot of ways, Havoc's beats along with Prodigy's music, it almost
- 11:33felt like they made horrorcore, you know what I'm saying, because it was
- 11:37always like this real dark chords and keys and stuff like that. And that
- 11:45record starts out with some rain Prodigy talking, and then when that beat hits,
- 11:54I put my lifetime in between the papers lines. I'm the quiet Stone
- 11:58who fight rhyn Peya. You heard the fuying the son with them. I
- 12:01pop more guns than you hold than them. I put my lifetime in between
- 12:09the papers lines, and that be. They had to make a remix and
- 12:16make it a single, and then Little Kim kept it that be along with
- 12:20Our Father Part three and a number of Havit beats, but that one specifically,
- 12:26it just does something to me. Where I'm just like y'all. When
- 12:31I first heard this, man, this is just one of the beats I
- 12:35just could not shake from my I just needed to hear it again and over
- 12:39and over again. It evokes a feeling for me, especially now. Sure
- 12:46it's nostalgic, but it's it's identical. So when I first heard it,
- 12:52it's not oh, I remember that and I was doing No, It's just
- 12:56that that beat is just so crazy that the anticipation or Prodigy solo album was
- 13:01crazy. When we knew that was going to be the lead single. It
- 13:05was like, Havy get it back? How they make it better beats than
- 13:09he did before? This is crazy? So and my last beat is And
- 13:16this was tough to narrow it down because I swear to this man, it
- 13:20just made so many But the first time I heard nothing but a G Thing,
- 13:30and in the Chronic album alone, you know songs like let Me Ride
- 13:35Stranded on Death Row, like it was crazy. But when I first heard
- 13:39nothing but a G Thing, you couldn't tell me. I wasn't from camp,
- 13:43I was in the video. I was just vibbing with the entire thing.
- 13:48But it was a dre that I had never heard before. Right production
- 13:54wise, Like we were so used to what he did with DC NWA.
- 14:00You know, we're used to that vibe and this G funk era shout out
- 14:05to Warren G. But this G funk sound was like it was so West
- 14:11Coast, but it was so unique to Doctor Dre and what they were creating.
- 14:16You have all these new artists like snook Rage and Corrupt Dazz on RBX
- 14:24shout out to Dog County ain't new album as though. Man, I've been
- 14:26listening to it all weekend, but nothing but a G thing. Someone might
- 14:31not even say that Gray's greatest beats, but I think it's one of the
- 14:35greatest beats of all time because it was popular. It was like pop popular.
- 14:41See, sometimes if something's grimmy enough, we don't think it's popular what
- 14:45everybody is to be like yeah, but when they go platum like that,
- 14:48that means people who have never been around anything they seen in the video you
- 14:54can't relate to anything being said in the song. It means they also like
- 14:56it, like Annie Up from Our I mean from Mop when that song became
- 15:03so huge, I'm like, I don't know if even though they're saying it,
- 15:07I don't know if people know that we're talking about robbing people and his
- 15:13joint, but the beat energy was so infectious it didn't matter where you were
- 15:18from, who you were or whatever. We just dug it. And I
- 15:22think with the Doctor Dre's the Chronic album and nothing but a g thing.
- 15:30Specifically, it wasn't a regional thing. It represented the West Coast, but
- 15:37in New York we were rocking with it. That's why every time I see
- 15:39the Source of Wars thing where Snooper is like, y'all don't love us,
- 15:43I'm like, I don't know what crowd that is, but where I'm around
- 15:46and where I'm from. And some people cheer at the Source of Wars when
- 15:50he said that, because we rock with it, and that's that record.
- 15:56Even to this day I put it on, I just like, y'all,
- 16:00I need to give me a low ride, you know, so I could
- 16:03just you know. But that's that's what making great music is all about.
- 16:08It's all about bringing you in. Even if you can't relate directly indirectly,
- 16:15you vibe with it. You are the standing. There's some people have never
- 16:18visited New York in a lifetime, and they know everything about New York through
- 16:22hip hop. Right, specifically because they're hip hop ads and that's what's dope
- 16:27about making lists like this. So there you have it. Those are my
