Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Like before you start with Mr. Brown, is there like
- 0:05Speaker 1: something you do to prepare to get into character or
- 0:07Speaker 1: like what?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Think of the dumbest stuff I can think of. I've
- 0:10Speaker 2: been doing it. Man, I've been doing that character for
- 0:12Speaker 2: 27 years.
- 0:15Speaker 3: How did you create Mr.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Brown?
- 0:17Speaker 3: Or did you just start?
- 0:18Speaker 2: He's an old dude that used to be out in
- 0:20Speaker 2: the country. I was born in the country and love it.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And I remember old dude used to be out in
- 0:25Speaker 2: the country and then just seeing just crazy. Crazy stuff,
- 0:30Speaker 2: you know, in the country, everybody ain't dressed to the T.
- 0:33Speaker 2: And literally how it came up for me to start
- 0:36Speaker 2: doing the crazy clothes, I didn't have a wardrobe when
- 0:38Speaker 2: we got ready to shoot the show. When we got
- 0:40Speaker 2: ready to do a play, I literally went down the
- 0:42Speaker 2: street to a thrift store and just loaded up. Just
- 0:46Speaker 2: loaded up. So by the time I came on stage,
- 0:48Speaker 2: you couldn't even see on one of the plays when
- 0:50Speaker 2: I came on stage, Tyler didn't know what I was
- 0:52Speaker 2: coming on. And he looked, he said, what are you doing?
- 0:57Speaker 2: And And it just, from there, from there, it just
- 1:00Speaker 2: came from there.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you what, man. You have definitely given Mr. Brown, man. Man,
- 1:08Speaker 3: his outfits, dude, are hideous.
- 1:10Speaker 2: We never could have imagined that doing those characters back
- 1:15Speaker 2: in 1999, that they would still be here. Because, you know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: a lot of times people grow out of the character.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I done grown into the character. all the way into
- 1:28Speaker 2: the character. But I'm cool. And people, it's not even
- 1:33Speaker 2: David Mann anymore, it's Mr. Brown. Just so they get
- 1:35Speaker 2: the ends right on the chick. Mann, two ends. I'm
- 1:38Speaker 2: through with it.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Man, when you think about your life, David, did you
- 1:45Speaker 3: see any of this?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Man, I couldn't have imagined any of this. Yeah, man,
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'm a little boy born in Lubbock to a woman
- 1:55Speaker 2: 16 years old. I was her second child.
- 2:00Speaker 3: A second child?
- 2:01Speaker 2: I was her second child. So, you know, statistically saying,
- 2:07Speaker 2: my mom had seventh grade education. So, statistically, this ain't
- 2:12Speaker 2: supposed to be me. I understand that there's nothing but
- 2:15Speaker 2: the favor of God in my life. Nothing but. And
- 2:19Speaker 2: some of the worst things in my life has been
- 2:22Speaker 2: the best things that happened to me in life.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Man, you know, we... Before you.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Came on, we just finished talking with Philip Anthony Mitchell,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and he said the same thing.
- 2:33Speaker 3: He said our character is shaped through our greatest suffering.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And for me, you know, some of the,
- 2:41Speaker 2: even you think in terms of how small things can
- 2:46Speaker 2: shape a big life. Like when we moved, we moved
- 2:49Speaker 2: from Houston to Fort Worth, and I wanted to go,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and this is significant because it shaped my entire life.
- 2:55Speaker 2: We moved from Houston to Fort Worth. I wanted to
- 2:59Speaker 2: go to this one, our rival high school. I wanted
- 3:02Speaker 2: to go to Dunbar, but my mom wouldn't let me.
- 3:05Speaker 2: She made me go to school ODY. And I cried
- 3:08Speaker 2: the entire week that I had to go to school
- 3:10Speaker 2: at ODY because I didn't want to go. Because my
- 3:12Speaker 2: cousin was there, family was there.
- 3:16Speaker 3: The YN was at Dunbar.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yes. And I was going to be, I want to be,
- 3:20Speaker 2: you know. And, you know, the preppy guys and everybody else,
- 3:23Speaker 2: they were at ODY. That being there in the choir class,
- 3:30Speaker 2: in a chorus choir class, shaped my entire career. I
- 3:34Speaker 2: met my wife. through this class. I met Kirk Franklin
- 3:38Speaker 2: through this class.
- 3:39Speaker 1: What?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yes, Darrell Blair, which is our, we were all a
- 3:42Speaker 2: group together.
- 3:42Speaker 3: So y'all was all in one class together? We were.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Well, my wife came as a result of her friend.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I was in a class with her best friend. And
- 3:51Speaker 2: she came and brought her best friend. Her best friend
- 3:54Speaker 2: brought her to come and meet us. And Kirk and
- 3:57Speaker 2: I and another brother, Darrell Blair, we all had a
- 4:00Speaker 2: group together. And we all met. So if I had
- 4:02Speaker 2: gone over to Dunbar... None of this for me.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Wow.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah. And it was the worst thing. We done moved
- 4:10Speaker 2: from another city. You done got me over to this
- 4:12Speaker 2: other high school. I don't want to be here. And look.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And even moving forward, you know, like I said, with
- 4:20Speaker 2: Kirk Franklin and the family, and when that season was over,
- 4:24Speaker 2: the worst thing that could happen. We traveled the world.
- 4:28Speaker 2: We've lived a life of, we've traveled the world at
- 4:31Speaker 2: somebody else's expense. And he said, We're not going to
- 4:35Speaker 2: be a group anymore. That was the worst thing in life. Like,
- 4:38Speaker 2: we just bought a house. What do we do? How
- 4:40Speaker 2: do we do all of this? It was terrible. Then
- 4:44Speaker 2: we meet this guy that's up and coming, Tyler Perry. Man,
- 4:48Speaker 2: that's the worst thing than the best thing all at
- 4:50Speaker 2: the same time.
- 4:52Speaker 1: You want to talk about, you know, when the Bible
- 4:54Speaker 1: says the steps of a good man are ordered by God.
- 4:59Speaker 3: That is a true example of that, man.
- 5:02Speaker 2: It don't always feel good. but it always worked out
- 5:05Speaker 2: for you good. That, for me, oh, it don't always
- 5:11Speaker 2: feel good. Like even some decisions now, it don't feel good,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but it always works. I was sitting, and I sit
- 5:20Speaker 2: and just talk to the Lord. I'm like, Lord, now
- 5:22Speaker 2: you know. And the Lord just checked me, and this
- 5:25Speaker 2: was a couple weeks ago, just checked me like, have
- 5:28Speaker 2: I ever, have I ever not came through for you?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Because I can call sometimes when you ain't came through
- 5:36Speaker 2: for me, but have I ever not came through for you?
- 5:40Speaker 2: And I just said, well, Lord, okay, what we eating?
- 5:43Speaker 2: What we eating for dinner, Lord?
- 5:46Speaker 3: Man, isn't that a gut punch?
- 5:48Speaker 2: It was a punch in the face. Because I'm sitting
- 5:51Speaker 2: here questioning like, Lord, you already know, so you need
- 5:56Speaker 2: to sit back. Have I ever? Unless you forget, let
- 6:01Speaker 2: me go back. And I literally was looking through some
- 6:03Speaker 2: videos and pictures and my grandkids were involved in a wreck.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And I looked at the car and he said, have
- 6:12Speaker 2: I ever not come through for you? And you look
- 6:14Speaker 2: at this wreck in this car and everybody in the
- 6:17Speaker 2: car should have died. And I guarantee, once I show
- 6:20Speaker 2: you this wreck, everybody, he said, nobody, the worst thing
- 6:24Speaker 2: is somebody broke an arm. And you look at the
- 6:27Speaker 2: car and the car was totally, It rolled over. It
- 6:30Speaker 2: was smashed. He said, had I ever not come through
- 6:34Speaker 2: for you? And I just was like, well, Lord, I'll
- 6:38Speaker 2: be shutting up now. Let me just go ahead and
- 6:40Speaker 2: do this devotional and just be quiet.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And to think, as you were talking, and no disrespect,
- 6:46Speaker 1: because I know we don't talk about people's age, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: your life is so encouraging to me to not only
- 6:54Speaker 1: see it, but to hear it in real time. And
- 6:57Speaker 1: it's encouraging to me because I'm like, man, I'm 44,
- 7:00Speaker 1: you're 60. And I think about like, wow, that's, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 1: it's not a long ways off, but it's a ways off.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You're 44, 60 is a long ways off. When you
- 7:10Speaker 2: start thinking about them, yeah, it's a long ways off.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Well, you know what I'm saying?
- 7:13Speaker 1: When you think about it numerically, right, and you're like, okay, so, okay,
- 7:18Speaker 1: 14 from, you know what I mean?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Because the way time goes.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It's going.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And so I'm saying that because I'm thinking about, as
- 7:25Speaker 1: you were talking, I'm saying, God, you come through for
- 7:28Speaker 1: him for 60 years.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And still.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And still. That's encouraging to me, even in this moment.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You come through for my brother for 60 years.
- 7:40Speaker 2: And I just, you know, I look at my life
- 7:43Speaker 2: sometime and I'm like, Lord, it's, you know, it's just
- 7:47Speaker 2: little old me. How in the world am I winding
- 7:51Speaker 2: up in places where, before kings, before queens, and doing this.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I can remember one time I was on this panel.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I think I told you this before. I was on
- 8:02Speaker 2: this panel with everybody with PhDs and doctorate degrees, and
- 8:06Speaker 2: here go me with my high school diploma. And I'm like, Lord,
- 8:09Speaker 2: how am I sitting up on this stage with these men?
- 8:13Speaker 2: Everybody up here is lettered. I call it they were lettered.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's like, They graduated magnum cum laude. I'm, oh, thank you, Lord.
- 8:23Speaker 2: They were lettered. And I'm sitting there like, how? He said,
- 8:27Speaker 2: because I've given you favor. And then I verbalized that
- 8:30Speaker 2: to one of the guys. I said, I'm a bit
- 8:32Speaker 2: intimidated because I'm the only one not lettered. He said,
- 8:36Speaker 2: you have something that we don't have. You have life experience.
- 8:40Speaker 2: We got paper. He said, we're going to have to
- 8:43Speaker 2: live to get where you got.
- 8:44Speaker 1: How did it make you feel when he said that?
- 8:48Speaker 2: I was just like, wow, I'm here for a reason.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I'm here because the Lord has placed me here. Because
- 8:54Speaker 2: I can honestly tell you, in my honesty, I was
- 8:59Speaker 2: a bit intimidated. Because it was just like, man, all
- 9:01Speaker 2: these guys have been schooled. He said, you've been schooled too.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You've been schooled through life.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Through life, yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I was like, wow, okay.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And I feel like the school of life gives you more.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And not to take it away from getting an education.
- 9:14Speaker 1: All of those different things.
- 9:17Speaker 2: It's needed. Get your education.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And I say that as.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Somebody who holds a degree in every bachelor's, master's, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: doctorate level. But what adds, and I often share this
- 9:29Speaker 1: with my mentees that are coming out of the mental
- 9:31Speaker 1: health space, going into the field of psychology, going into.
- 9:34Speaker 3: The field of social work, or becoming a counselor or
- 9:38Speaker 3: a therapist.
- 9:39Speaker 1: They're so in a hurry to get To the place
- 9:42Speaker 1: that I am because I'm doing this, not realizing what
- 9:47Speaker 1: amplifies my education is because of my life experience.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Because I can add life in the theory, in the
- 9:58Speaker 1: concepts and understanding. also in the process of giving somebody
- 10:03Speaker 1: something textbook I can take life and implement it in
- 10:07Speaker 1: a way and and and really define it and delineate
- 10:11Speaker 1: it in a way that people says good man I
- 10:14Speaker 1: see myself in this and not feel like, oh, he's
- 10:17Speaker 1: just regurgitating the book.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Right. And see, I never planned on getting into this space,
- 10:23Speaker 2: the space that you and I met in, in the
- 10:25Speaker 2: mental health space.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And I never planned on getting into it.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I never planned on it. It's like, and I even
- 10:30Speaker 2: wonder now, like, how are people calling me to do
- 10:33Speaker 2: podcasts and stuff? I never planned this. I found myself
- 10:38Speaker 2: in this. And my experience showing people how to come
- 10:42Speaker 2: through this is what's led me to all these spaces.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And I think also, too, David, it was your authenticity
- 10:49Speaker 1: when you shared so openly on the Tamron Hall show.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I would never forget that episode.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:54Speaker 3: You and I hadn't met yet. Okay. And I remember
- 10:57Speaker 3: somebody sending me that episode, and they was like, yo.
- 11:01Speaker 2: You know, every time I think of that episode, it
- 11:03Speaker 2: brings me tears because it was like that was my–
- 11:05Speaker 2: I was so nervous that day. I almost didn't do it.
- 11:10Speaker 3: What made you go there that day and open up
- 11:14Speaker 3: about that?
- 11:14Speaker 2: I told Tam, I said, I have to tell people
- 11:18Speaker 2: because there are so many brothers hurting that are hiding,
- 11:23Speaker 2: hiding from it. And I said, I got to tell it.
- 11:26Speaker 2: But I almost talked myself out minutes before going on there.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I was like, man, you know, people... People are going
- 11:34Speaker 2: to be like, nah, you're too funny to be in
- 11:36Speaker 2: a depressed state. I almost talked myself out of it.
- 11:39Speaker 2: But I'm so glad that I went through because it
- 11:42Speaker 2: helped so many people. I got so much feedback from that.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So many people texting like, thank you for just being transparent.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Now I know what to call. I was at the
- 11:53Speaker 2: Dove Awards, and I'm walking down the hall. This older
- 11:56Speaker 2: white guy, he's probably in his 70s, late 70s. He said,
- 12:00Speaker 2: thank you for putting a name and a face to
- 12:02Speaker 2: what I'm dealing with. He had lost a son and
- 12:05Speaker 2: found himself. He said, I literally, like what you said,
- 12:09Speaker 2: I literally felt like I was drowning. And I just didn't.
- 12:12Speaker 2: He said, I couldn't verbalize it. He said, but thank
- 12:15Speaker 2: you for verbalizing the way I've been feeling. And I
- 12:18Speaker 2: was like, okay, it was worth it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I'm going to take it a step further. What you
- 12:24Speaker 1: did was put a face to all the comedians.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Who did not have the....
- 12:35Speaker 2: I would say the space. Because I get stuck when
- 12:38Speaker 2: I get there, too. It's like, who didn't have the what?
- 12:40Speaker 2: The space. And, you know, just the place to go
- 12:44Speaker 2: and be safe and say, look, I know I make
- 12:48Speaker 2: you laugh, but when I go back here to this
- 12:50Speaker 2: back room, come on, I'm cracking. I'm about to lose it.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'm cracking up. And some of them didn't make it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I look at some that didn't, didn't get that space,
- 13:01Speaker 2: and didn't feel open enough to say, somebody help me.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Because that's all we're crying out for, is to say,
- 13:07Speaker 2: can somebody see me and help me? Or, you know,
- 13:10Speaker 2: like a Dr. J. Barnett, hey, can you give me
- 13:12Speaker 2: some direction on how to get past this thing? And
- 13:15Speaker 2: all it takes is one spark to start a fire.
- 13:19Speaker 2: It's just one spark. I was a spark. I was
- 13:22Speaker 2: a spark that ignited some guy looking at it that
- 13:24Speaker 2: day to say, good, honey, can I talk to you
- 13:28Speaker 2: about this? Yeah, and it opened up a space for
- 13:31Speaker 2: people to talk. That's all I wanted to do.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'm so glad you did that, man, because even as
- 13:35Speaker 1: you was talking just now, I was thinking about Robin Williams.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I grew up watching Robin Williams.
- 13:41Speaker 2: One of the most brilliant slapstick comedians ever. Made the
- 13:47Speaker 2: world laugh. Created, phrased it, nano, nano, all of the
- 13:50Speaker 2: stuff that he created, and he was living in darkness.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I just don't know if he had the space or
- 13:57Speaker 2: the place where he could say, somebody help me. Because
- 14:01Speaker 2: he was so busy giving, he didn't get any help.
- 14:04Speaker 3: The responsibility of laughter.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Oh, it's great. It's great. I don't want to say
- 14:12Speaker 2: people don't care. People just, if I paid for a
- 14:15Speaker 2: ticket for you to make me laugh, you need to
- 14:18Speaker 2: make me laugh. I never forget, I was on tour
- 14:22Speaker 2: and my grandmother passed. Because I was on tour, you know,
- 14:25Speaker 2: they were supposed to stream the service, you know, because
- 14:29Speaker 2: I couldn't, unless I gave everybody back their money. And so, man,
- 14:34Speaker 2: I literally was, I was in a funk that day.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I was sad. I couldn't make it to the funeral.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And I had the commitment. And I was like, I
- 14:44Speaker 2: got to go out here and make these people laugh
- 14:46Speaker 2: while my heart is burning. My heart is literally crying. I,
- 14:50Speaker 2: before the show, about an hour before the show, I
- 14:52Speaker 2: went and took a nap. And I just cried myself
- 14:54Speaker 2: to sleep. So when I woke up, I was like,
- 14:56Speaker 2: I don't know how I'm going to do this. I
- 14:57Speaker 2: do not know how I'm about to go out here. Man,
- 15:01Speaker 2: I went out on that stage, and it's like everything.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I said, boo, the audience was rolling. I don't know
- 15:09Speaker 2: what it was. Something that night, when I got off
- 15:11Speaker 2: that stage, I was like, here you go again. You
- 15:15Speaker 2: come through every time. Even in my hurting, you still
- 15:19Speaker 2: have given me this ability to bring laughter and joy
- 15:23Speaker 2: and still be transparent. Because I shared with them that
- 15:26Speaker 2: my heart was hurting. But that night, it was like,
- 15:30Speaker 2: can I have one of them nights every night? My
- 15:33Speaker 2: heart was tore up. I could not believe the amount.
- 15:37Speaker 2: It was literally a lady on the front row who
- 15:40Speaker 2: was almost sick from laughing. And I was just sitting
- 15:43Speaker 2: looking at her like, do you understand what I'm dealing with?
- 15:47Speaker 2: And you're rolling, and I'm giving you something that I need.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And it actually helped me that night.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Wow.
- 15:53Speaker 3: It sounds like you felt like.
- 15:55Speaker 1: When a basketball player get in that rhythm, they just
- 15:59Speaker 1: feel like everything they throw up is going in.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I felt like Jordan with the flu. You remember that
- 16:04Speaker 2: Jordan had the flu game? Yeah. Because when I came
- 16:07Speaker 2: off stage, I just, I was in the back crying.
- 16:11Speaker 2: But I felt like Jordan with the flu that night.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Do you feel that? The average man feels that. It's like, man,
- 16:20Speaker 3: I'm hurting, but I still got to come through.
- 16:23Speaker 1: No.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Well, yes, yes. I thought they don't have the space,
- 16:26Speaker 2: but yes. I feel like we got to always be on.
- 16:31Speaker 2: We got to make sure that they're provided for. And
- 16:35Speaker 2: if you're a real well-rounded man, you got to make
- 16:37Speaker 2: sure that everybody feels you. And like I said, and
- 16:41Speaker 2: you and I had a conversation before, the number of
- 16:44Speaker 2: people that we encounter a day That we have to be.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Ownful for. Think about it. And it. I just told people.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Just do the math. If. I have five kids. So.
- 16:56Speaker 2: That's a. And I have a wife. That's six people.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Right there. And then I have. Nine grandkids. That you
- 17:03Speaker 2: got to try to make. Everybody feel special. Then I
- 17:06Speaker 2: have a mom. Then I come out and I got Dr. J. Hey, Doc,
- 17:10Speaker 2: how's it going? So think about the number of people
- 17:13Speaker 2: that you have to be on and encounter every day.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Do the math daily. And then try to take care
- 17:20Speaker 2: of you. Who do you think is the last one
- 17:22Speaker 2: to get taken care of? You. That's why we have
- 17:27Speaker 2: got to start making some room. It's okay. And I
- 17:31Speaker 2: had to have a conversation the other day. It's okay
- 17:34Speaker 2: if you're not at everything. I'm at 60. I'm not
- 17:37Speaker 2: going to be at everything. Some days I cannot because
- 17:42Speaker 2: you can literally wear yourself out trying to encounter all
- 17:46Speaker 2: those people every day. And you only have 24 hours.
- 17:50Speaker 2: If you've got 25 people and you're trying to get
- 17:53Speaker 2: 30 people, 40 people, you could lose yourself. And I
- 17:58Speaker 2: literally got lost. I got lost in trying to make sure.
- 18:02Speaker 2: And now, if I can, great. If I can't, I'll
- 18:06Speaker 2: catch you tomorrow.
- 18:08Speaker 1: How long were you trying to make sure everybody was good?
- 18:11Speaker 1: How long have you been in that space?
- 18:14Speaker 2: I'm writing a book, and you're the first person I've
- 18:17Speaker 2: told this. I'm writing a book called I Promise I'm
- 18:19Speaker 2: Not Crazy.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Oh, man, I love that title. Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 2: It's a playoff for me as a comedian. People will say, hey,
- 18:27Speaker 2: as a comedian, that boy got to be crazy to
- 18:29Speaker 2: be that funny. But when we talk about mental health,
- 18:33Speaker 2: the same people are like, that nigga crazy. there's something
- 18:36Speaker 2: wrong with you. So it's a playoff of that. And
- 18:39Speaker 2: I talk about in the book how I somehow, I'm
- 18:43Speaker 2: not the oldest, but I somehow got moved to that
- 18:47Speaker 2: top position. So I've been helping take care of people
- 18:49Speaker 2: since I was probably about 10, 12 years old. So
- 18:54Speaker 2: it's all you know to do. That's all I know
- 18:57Speaker 2: to do. My mama was a grinder. My mama worked
- 19:00Speaker 2: hard to take care of her boys. So she needed
- 19:02Speaker 2: somebody at home to make sure Everything was straight. That
- 19:06Speaker 2: was me. So I literally have been helping take care
- 19:10Speaker 2: of people since early, early. And that's all I know.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And you know how hard it is to break away?
- 19:18Speaker 2: That was the first thing my therapist told me when
- 19:21Speaker 2: I went to therapy. He said, you've got to learn
- 19:24Speaker 2: to be a little selfish. And I was looking at
- 19:27Speaker 2: him like, man.
- 19:28Speaker 3: That's hard.
- 19:28Speaker 2: That's hard.
- 19:30Speaker 3: With a black mom?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yeah. I said, man, I can't do that. And he said,
- 19:34Speaker 2: you got to learn to be a little more selfish.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You got to learn to take some time for you.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Because you want to make sure the kids, you go
- 19:42Speaker 2: on the grind. And then the guilt from traveling and
- 19:45Speaker 2: being away from your kids and being there. So when
- 19:47Speaker 2: you're there, you try to do all you can do.
- 19:49Speaker 2: which is never enough. You're never going to be able
- 19:52Speaker 2: to do enough for people. You give them $ 100. They
- 19:56Speaker 2: wanted $ 150. You go to 10 events, you miss one. Then, oh,
- 20:02Speaker 2: you missed that one. You can never do enough for people.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I had to learn to start doing some stuff for me.
- 20:08Speaker 1: When you started doing stuff for you, Was it hard
- 20:13Speaker 1: for you to really, and I know it's been like
- 20:15Speaker 1: that for me, right? Like last week, I had a
- 20:19Speaker 1: few days, man, where it was like I did nothing
- 20:22Speaker 1: but like watch shows. So I got up and did
- 20:27Speaker 1: my workout. And I just shared this recently. I've been
- 20:31Speaker 1: battling vertigo for like a year and a half. I've
- 20:34Speaker 1: always had inner ear issues. I had like 40% of
- 20:38Speaker 1: my hearing is going to my left ear since a kid.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I've had holes in my eardrums. I've had tubes in
- 20:43Speaker 1: and out of my ear for the past, like at
- 20:47Speaker 1: least three years in between the age of seven and ten.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Really?
- 20:51Speaker 1: So now that I'm older, fluid builds up easily on
- 20:55Speaker 1: my ears.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Especially at certain times of the year.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Certain times of the year. And then I'm flying more
- 21:00Speaker 1: than I ever have flown. So those crystals get offline.
- 21:05Speaker 1: And when they get offline, it causes vertigo, which is
- 21:07Speaker 1: off balance, dizziness. nauseousness, all those different things. And I
- 21:14Speaker 1: had an episode the other day, bro. I went running,
- 21:19Speaker 1: did my run, and usually it happens if I'm down
- 21:24Speaker 1: and I pop up. So I felt it when I
- 21:28Speaker 1: was walking back to the house and I get in
- 21:31Speaker 1: the elevator, I grab the package, I go down, and
- 21:36Speaker 1: when I stood up, it's like I just black out.
- 21:40Speaker 3: It's like I get hit.
- 21:43Speaker 1: It's like I get hit with like this, it's a
- 21:45Speaker 1: weird feeling, like an electric shock. I fall back on
- 21:48Speaker 1: the elevator. That's all I remember. When I got up,
- 21:52Speaker 1: the elevator was opening on my floor.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Really?
- 21:56Speaker 1: So, I'm like, you know, reaching out to my doctor and,
- 21:59Speaker 1: you know, all this stuff, man. And I'm like, and
- 22:02Speaker 1: of course, her things always rest.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah. And She's like, no, Jay, rest like don't do nothing.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Just rest.
- 22:14Speaker 1: That is hard because now I felt better after I rested.
- 22:20Speaker 1: But it was so hard to do, man, because I
- 22:22Speaker 1: know I'm not lazy. But to sit around for like 10, 12,
- 22:25Speaker 1: 15 hours and just watch shows.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Imagine trying to do it for like a week.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Like was that hard for you to sit and rest?
- 22:34Speaker 2: It's still hard. Like now, and that's why I bought
- 22:38Speaker 2: the ranch, to just have a place to go and
- 22:42Speaker 2: my wife will say, just do nothing. And for me
- 22:45Speaker 2: to just sit and do nothing, like I'm not thinking
- 22:47Speaker 2: of the next next, and I'm not thinking.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Man, that's hard, man.
- 22:52Speaker 2: It is hard, but it's necessary. You know, like I
- 22:55Speaker 2: was telling you, when the doctor, I mean, when the
- 22:58Speaker 2: therapist told me that, he said, take the rest of
- 23:01Speaker 2: this day and just do only stuff for you. And
- 23:05Speaker 2: I was like, well, okay, so I'm hungry. Usually I
- 23:09Speaker 2: grab my food and go to the house, and, you know,
- 23:10Speaker 2: we sit. I sit there at Chick-fil-A, and I just
- 23:15Speaker 2: looked around like by myself, like I felt like a crackhead.
- 23:20Speaker 2: What we doing? What we got going on, you know?
- 23:22Speaker 2: I'm sitting there with my sandwich, and I sit there
- 23:24Speaker 2: and just sit there with my phone and just ate.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I didn't have to just engage with nobody. At first
- 23:32Speaker 2: it felt weird, and I was like, you're a big
- 23:34Speaker 2: boy now. You're going to be all right. I went
- 23:37Speaker 2: out to the ranch and spent the night by myself.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I've never lived by myself.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Hold on. So you drove out to the ranch that night?
- 23:47Speaker 2: And spent the night by myself.
- 23:48Speaker 3: That drive alone.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, yeah. You've been out there.
- 23:52Speaker 3: So you had a lot of time to think.
- 23:54Speaker 2: To just think and ride. And she was like, baby,
- 23:57Speaker 2: you should just go and just stay the night by yourself.
- 24:00Speaker 2: And see, I've never lived by myself. I moved straight
- 24:04Speaker 2: from home. Then me and Tam got together. We lived together.
- 24:07Speaker 3: So you've never lived by yourself?
- 24:08Speaker 2: I've never lived by myself. I've never been a bachelor.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Are you serious?
- 24:12Speaker 2: No.
- 24:13Speaker 3: In 60 years, Dave, you've never been a bachelor?
- 24:15Speaker 2: I've never lived by myself. Never lived alone.
- 24:18Speaker 1: You don't know what it's like to be in the
- 24:19Speaker 1: house and hear something and you're like, it ain't nobody.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Now, I did when I went out to the country
- 24:25Speaker 2: to stay by myself. But you know how secluded and
- 24:27Speaker 2: isolated it is.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I couldn't have done that.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Well, I did. And I spent the night. I talked
- 24:33Speaker 2: to her on the phone. I just was like, wow. Now,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I could only do like, I think I did like
- 24:37Speaker 2: a day and a half. You got to bring that
- 24:39Speaker 2: warm yellow flesh out of here to daddy. I can't
- 24:41Speaker 2: be out here by myself now. We got to rub
- 24:45Speaker 2: legs or something. But I did. And, you know, I
- 24:50Speaker 2: was like, I'm going to be all right. I don't
- 24:52Speaker 2: have to be at everything. I don't have to do everything.
- 24:56Speaker 2: And sometimes people don't understand that. Why you can't do this?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Why you can't do that? I just don't want to.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And it's really hard for me to not do that
- 25:07Speaker 2: because I'm a fixer. You give me a problem, let's
- 25:10Speaker 2: go fix it. And I've learned it's not for me
- 25:12Speaker 2: to fix everything. Because, see, I found myself playing God
- 25:17Speaker 2: to people. Oh, yeah. I found myself, oh, don't worry.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Daddy will fix it. Daddy got it. You can't fix everything.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Sometimes people just need to just have a place to talk.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Not for you to fix.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But, see, me.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going to fix it for you.
- 25:33Speaker 3: We'll be looking for solutions.
- 25:35Speaker 2: No, it's not for me to fix everything. Sometimes it's
- 25:37Speaker 2: just to listen. Just, okay, you finished? Or I'm going
- 25:41Speaker 2: back over here to the tractor. Yeah. Damn.
- 25:45Speaker 1: You know, this is so good, man, because my doctor
- 25:50Speaker 1: told me, she's like, you don't slow down, it's not
- 25:52Speaker 1: going to be good.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, definitely, for sure. I've definitely learned that lesson, hardcore.
- 25:59Speaker 2: I mean, when you can't do anything I was at
- 26:03Speaker 2: the Stella Awards, and nobody knew. Doing the Stella Awards,
- 26:08Speaker 2: I told my wife, I'm going to go to the restroom,
- 26:11Speaker 2: and I didn't say anything to her, but I was
- 26:13Speaker 2: having some heart problems. I said, okay. So I said, well,
- 26:17Speaker 2: I'm going to just thug it out. I went straight,
- 26:20Speaker 2: when we got to the house, I went straight to
- 26:22Speaker 2: the emergency room. I said, sir, we're going to check
- 26:25Speaker 2: you in. We think you may be having a heart attack.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I didn't tell nobody. I didn't let nobody know. I
- 26:31Speaker 2: was like, what? Yeah, we need to monitor you. You may.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Thank God I didn't. It was just some abnormal stuff
- 26:38Speaker 2: going on. But it's just because just running, just running
- 26:42Speaker 2: and not stopping. That's laying up in that hospital bed,
- 26:46Speaker 2: and I absolutely hate the hospital. But I couldn't go nowhere.
- 26:51Speaker 2: And I'm just sitting there just, okay, well, Lord, I
- 26:54Speaker 2: guess you know how to stop all of that.
- 26:56Speaker 1: You know what's crazy? I heard this guy say a
- 27:00Speaker 1: man can have 100 problems. But if he has a
- 27:04Speaker 1: health problem, that is his only problem.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Yep. You know why? Because we take better care of
- 27:10Speaker 2: our cars, especially men. We take better care of our cars.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Let your check engine light come on in your car.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And you got a bad car? You won't even put
- 27:19Speaker 2: low-grade fuel in your car. But we'll put everything in.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I'm the pot calling the kettle black. I'm speaking to
- 27:27Speaker 2: me as I speak to you guys. The check engine
- 27:30Speaker 2: come on, we immediately make it. You let us have
- 27:33Speaker 2: some heart issues or something. I got to go into
- 27:36Speaker 2: work first. Let me work these 10 shifts. Yeah. So
- 27:41Speaker 2: we got to start taking better care of ourselves. Because
- 27:43Speaker 2: you only get one of these unless you can get
- 27:46Speaker 2: some transplants. Give me a 16-year-old heart and lungs. I'm good.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I don't want that. But cars, you're going to get
- 27:54Speaker 2: several cars. You're going to get cars. But I don't
- 27:59Speaker 2: know why we take better care of our vehicles than
- 28:01Speaker 2: we do of our bodies.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Brothers, do y'all hear that?
- 28:05Speaker 1: Why do we take better care of our cars than
- 28:09Speaker 1: we do our bodies? And I think it's something to
- 28:12Speaker 1: add to that is that why do you value something
- 28:18Speaker 1: that is perishable, right? Something that.
- 28:21Speaker 2: And replaceable.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And replaceable. Why do you value that over your own life?
- 28:28Speaker 1: And then why do you value that over the quality
- 28:29Speaker 1: of your life? Because I think What is happening to
- 28:32Speaker 1: black men, and you and I talk a lot about
- 28:34Speaker 1: aging men, right, particularly for males that are 50 plus,
- 28:39Speaker 1: and what they're saying right now, men are not getting older,
- 28:43Speaker 1: they're transitioning.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Yeah, quickly.
- 28:45Speaker 3: They're not aging, they're transitioning quickly.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Transitioning quickly.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And there's something to be said about a man who
- 28:51Speaker 1: has the awareness, but then also who has the courage
- 28:56Speaker 1: to acknowledge that I'm not well, but to go explore
- 29:02Speaker 1: why he's not well.
- 29:03Speaker 2: And I think that that comes from us having these
- 29:06Speaker 2: conversations to let them know that they're not alone. Because
- 29:09Speaker 2: you've got to remember, we've been conditioned to be that way.
- 29:13Speaker 2: We've been conditioned, hey, thug it out. Go on to work. Provide.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Don't share your emotions. Don't cry. We've been just prone
- 29:22Speaker 2: to just like, this is how it is, and this
- 29:25Speaker 2: is how it's always going to be.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And to have these conversations like this, it tells other men, okay,
- 29:33Speaker 2: I can take off my cape, my Superman cape, and
- 29:36Speaker 2: I can relax. And I can be open and I
- 29:39Speaker 2: can be vulnerable. And there are spaces like this that
- 29:42Speaker 2: give me some places to go.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Exactly. Because, you know, brothers, I'll be honest with you, man.
- 29:49Speaker 3: That cape is killing us.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 29:52Speaker 3: God.
- 29:52Speaker 2: The cape is the death of most of us.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Man, that cape is killing us, man.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Because we won't take it off because we feel if
- 29:58Speaker 2: we take it off, it speaks about us as a man.
- 30:02Speaker 2: And that does not, that whole thing, that's not your character.
- 30:06Speaker 2: If you have a moment of being vulnerable, that doesn't
- 30:10Speaker 2: define you as a man, being vulnerable. My wife told
- 30:13Speaker 2: me that at my lowest point and when I was
- 30:16Speaker 2: my most vulnerable, that's the strongest she's ever seen me.
- 30:20Speaker 2: And when she said it, I was like, that got
- 30:22Speaker 2: to be the dumbest thing I ever heard in my life.
- 30:24Speaker 2: But you think about it, she said to her that
- 30:26Speaker 2: was the strongest she's ever seen. It's to just, you
- 30:30Speaker 2: don't have to fix nothing. Let us take care of you.
- 30:33Speaker 2: And my daughter Tiffany said, you hid it well, but
- 30:36Speaker 2: it's not hidden anymore. It's out here. Now let us
- 30:39Speaker 2: help you.
- 30:41Speaker 3: How was that, receiving help?
- 30:43Speaker 2: Hard. It's hard to receive help with you.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Is it still hard for you to receive?
- 30:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Like for people, even this couple in the restaurant
- 30:53Speaker 2: the other day, They say, well, your food has been
- 30:55Speaker 2: paid for. And I looked over and looking around and
- 30:58Speaker 2: a couple like, hey, why you do that? I'm used
- 31:02Speaker 2: to doing that for people. And the Lord just convicted me,
- 31:05Speaker 2: let people do some stuff for you too. I'm like, Lord,
- 31:10Speaker 2: you just been hard on me.
- 31:12Speaker 3: What did I do?
- 31:15Speaker 2: But it is hard for me to receive help like
- 31:18Speaker 2: that because I've always been And I don't say this
- 31:23Speaker 2: like I'm the Savior, but I've played the Savior. And
- 31:28Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I think sometimes receiving help, sometimes it's almost like, am
- 31:36Speaker 1: I helpless?
- 31:37Speaker 3: Do I look helpless? Do I look hopeless? Yeah, yeah.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I know for me, like even for somebody that like,
- 31:44Speaker 1: when I was, like there was a time I was
- 31:46Speaker 1: in a relationship with a young lady.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Man, she was such a giver.
- 31:50Speaker 1: And at that time, for one, I couldn't wrap my
- 31:56Speaker 1: mind around, you're giving something to me and I haven't
- 32:00Speaker 1: done anything.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:02Speaker 1: That was really messing with me because, oh, I just
- 32:04Speaker 1: want to do this. And I'm like, well, why?
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 3: And I think for men, if.
- 32:10Speaker 1: We're going to truly evolve within ourselves, learning how to receive.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Well is important.
- 32:18Speaker 2: It is very important.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Because you will build your framework around doing and reward.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Rather than understanding being is the reward.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Wow. Even like me, like after I came out of
- 32:34Speaker 2: the hospital, there was a period that I had to
- 32:37Speaker 2: just lay there. And for Tam to have to serve me,
- 32:41Speaker 2: I really enjoy serving her.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Like when she had double knee replacement, she's a thug.
- 32:48Speaker 2: She had double knee replacement. both at the same time.
- 32:51Speaker 2: So I was at home. I was, like, happy to serve. Like,
- 32:54Speaker 2: what do I need to do now?
- 32:55Speaker 3: We going to walk?
- 32:56Speaker 2: What do I need to cook? When the tables were turned,
- 32:59Speaker 2: I was like, I don't want you serving me like that.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Let me get up.
- 33:02Speaker 2: And she had to tell me, lay down. Let me
- 33:06Speaker 2: do what you do for me. Why is it so
- 33:08Speaker 2: hard for you? Why is it so hard for you
- 33:10Speaker 2: to just receive? And I honestly didn't have an answer.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I was just like, I don't know. I'm just so
- 33:17Speaker 2: used to it.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Man, it's so hard.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Just lay back.
- 33:21Speaker 3: So hard. I got a phone call earlier like, hey,
- 33:23Speaker 3: what you need?
- 33:25Speaker 1: I'm going to send something over there to the shoot today.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I was like, no, we good.
- 33:29Speaker 2: And you know you wasn't good.
- 33:30Speaker 1: You know you're hungry. I know I wasn't good. And
- 33:32Speaker 1: I literally picked up my phone and ordered food. I
- 33:36Speaker 1: don't know what it is. And I'm trying to break that.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I don't know if it's something that can be broken.
- 33:42Speaker 2: It is. It is. Brothers, and it's just plain and simple. Brothers,
- 33:46Speaker 2: just let people help you through. What I've learned, and
- 33:50Speaker 2: I haven't been a good business steward because I think
- 33:56Speaker 2: I got to put the lights on, fix the toilet,
- 33:58Speaker 2: do this. I think I got to just try to
- 34:00Speaker 2: do everything. And this last couple years, I've learned to delegate.
- 34:04Speaker 2: But you don't have to micromanage nobody. This is what
- 34:08Speaker 2: they do. Let them do it. And my team has
- 34:10Speaker 2: been great about just like, No disrespect, sir. Let us
- 34:15Speaker 2: do what you pay us to do.
- 34:17Speaker 3: And I think for me, bro, it's like, man, dude,
- 34:22Speaker 3: I can do this.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 1: And sometimes CJ has been really, I've learned a lot
- 34:27Speaker 1: from CJ about serving because I do it. Like my
- 34:31Speaker 1: best friend, when he goes on the road to preach,
- 34:34Speaker 1: I carry Bible. I'm his armor bearer. Oh, I love
- 34:38Speaker 1: to do it. And then when I'm on the road,
- 34:39Speaker 1: he does the same thing for me. But now, sometimes
- 34:43Speaker 1: too it is crazy because we both struggle with that
- 34:47Speaker 1: yeah because i'm carrying this bag and um just recently
- 34:51Speaker 1: he was speaking somewhere and these people was on him
- 34:53Speaker 1: i said hey brother we gotta get you out of
- 34:54Speaker 1: here man come on i'm like a real security like
- 34:58Speaker 1: and you know but when the tables is turned and
- 35:01Speaker 1: i was getting ready to minister at this space and
- 35:03Speaker 1: uh he was walking up on the podium to set
- 35:06Speaker 1: my laptop up and i said no.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I got it but i do it he said Just chill.
- 35:10Speaker 3: And he hit me with, nigga, sit down.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Right now.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Like, I got this.
- 35:15Speaker 2: I absolutely love.
- 35:16Speaker 3: I love serving, man.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I love serving. And there's nothing wrong with that, but
- 35:20Speaker 2: allow people to serve you back. I think that's where
- 35:23Speaker 2: a lot of us have a hard time is just
- 35:25Speaker 2: allowing people to serve you.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something I'm working on. And I'm also working on, man,
- 35:34Speaker 1: learning how to be loved.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I know how to be loved. I done
- 35:38Speaker 2: learned that. Make love to my girl. Now, love, there's
- 35:41Speaker 2: a difference. There's a difference. And I do know since
- 35:46Speaker 2: the tour, we went on tour, I kind of felt
- 35:48Speaker 2: like there was a shift.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Man, let me tell you something. And I got to
- 35:51Speaker 1: tell you this on camera. That tour changed my life, man.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Wow.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I came back and I told CJ, I told several
- 36:01Speaker 1: other people, I said, I've gone around the world teaching healing.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I've gone around the world helping people understand mental health,
- 36:12Speaker 1: understand their disorders, understand what resources that are available to them.
- 36:19Speaker 1: But I said in the midst of doing all of that,
- 36:22Speaker 1: I was very avoidant to being open for love and
- 36:26Speaker 1: very avoidant to allowing myself to experience that.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. And when I saw you guys, man, on those cities, man. Wow.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Bro, I literally, I told CJ, I said, bro, I
- 36:41Speaker 1: want to experience that, man. Bro, I'm like, I'm being
- 36:45Speaker 1: so honest, man. I was not, I told God, I said, listen, man.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I said, I've gotten to a place where I'm disciplined
- 36:52Speaker 1: in my sexuality. I ain't going to be out here.
- 36:55Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 36:56Speaker 2: You'll get some. You'll get some. Everybody gets some.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 1: We even beat Oprah and handed out meat. No meat service.
- 37:07Speaker 2: That tour was one of the most gratifying tours. We're
- 37:10Speaker 2: talking about the love and relationship tour. It's because we
- 37:13Speaker 2: wanted to explore all relationships, whether it was a relationship
- 37:16Speaker 2: with the Lord, a relationship with your father, mother, husband,
- 37:20Speaker 2: and wife. And, man, that was just an opportunity for us.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I believe that that's our next phase in life. That's
- 37:27Speaker 2: our next thing is to– that's where– we're ultimately going
- 37:32Speaker 2: to plant our feet.
- 37:34Speaker 3: That's a good place to plant, bro.
- 37:35Speaker 2: That's where we're going to plant our feet is because
- 37:38Speaker 2: it's lost. And I don't care what society say, love
- 37:42Speaker 2: is not dead. The black family is not dead. Now,
- 37:46Speaker 2: it's had its little moment where it, but I believe
- 37:49Speaker 2: that all it takes, like I said earlier, all it
- 37:52Speaker 2: takes is a spark. And I heard so many couples
- 37:55Speaker 2: say that. I had a young man approach me in D.C.
- 37:58Speaker 2: He said, man, I didn't really want to come to
- 38:00Speaker 2: the tour. And I said, well, why? He said, because,
- 38:04Speaker 2: you know, my wife and I kind of, you know.
- 38:07Speaker 2: And he said, that listening to you guys and listening
- 38:11Speaker 2: to your guests, it reignited. It made me say, okay,
- 38:15Speaker 2: this is possible. And I'm not trying to, you know,
- 38:19Speaker 2: because I know some people are like, you bring false
- 38:21Speaker 2: hope to, no. I'm just showing it's possible.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Man, you, you, you. Y'all show that. And I think
- 38:26Speaker 3: what I was telling people, I was like, man, these
- 38:28Speaker 3: people like each other, man.
- 38:30Speaker 2: We like each other.
- 38:31Speaker 3: I tell you, I've been around a lot of couples, baby.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:34Speaker 1: I've, I've seen people who love each other. I'm like, yeah, she,
- 38:38Speaker 1: she love him, but she can't stand him. He love her,
- 38:41Speaker 1: but she can't, he can't stand her. When I was
- 38:43Speaker 1: around you guys, I said, man, they love each other.
- 38:46Speaker 1: But I'm gonna tell you what did it for me.
- 38:47Speaker 1: When you was telling me the story, uh, when we
- 38:50Speaker 1: was in the shed and you was talking about, um,
- 38:55Speaker 1: before Tamela got started on her music career, and you
- 38:58Speaker 1: was talking about what you saw for her. And you
- 39:02Speaker 1: said she gets to go out and go on stage.
- 39:05Speaker 1: And you said, you know how you see a duck
- 39:06Speaker 1: on top of the water?
- 39:08Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 1: And he's just doing this underneath his feet. And you said, man,
- 39:13Speaker 1: I'm the feet underneath her.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Bro, when you, because I have such a, man, my
- 39:19Speaker 1: memory is just crazy. My dad, he don't like it
- 39:21Speaker 1: because it's like, why you got to remember all this stuff?
- 39:25Speaker 3: But there's things, I've never forgot that, man.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 39:29Speaker 3: And I said, to experience that with somebody, man, that's
- 39:33Speaker 3: got to be beautiful.
- 39:34Speaker 2: And that's my job. She can glide on water smoothly
- 39:39Speaker 2: because under the water, I take on. And that's something
- 39:43Speaker 2: that we share. Now she's starting to flip that word.
- 39:47Speaker 2: You don't have to do all of that as we go.
- 39:49Speaker 2: We built this. Now you can let me do some.
- 39:52Speaker 2: She'll come into the meetings now. So now my paddle's
- 39:56Speaker 2: a little slower, so we both can go smooth. But
- 39:59Speaker 2: we both do that for each other. I mean, we
- 40:02Speaker 2: both make sure life is good for each other. Now,
- 40:06Speaker 2: we have this little thing that you can't beat me.
- 40:09Speaker 2: You can't do for me more than I've done for you.
- 40:12Speaker 2: And I definitely make sure. I make sure I outdo her.
- 40:16Speaker 2: But she's also trying to catch up. I'm just at
- 40:21Speaker 2: a point in life, man, to where we definitely have
- 40:26Speaker 2: to make sure that we're loving each other equally. Because
- 40:32Speaker 2: I see that too. You see a couple and it'll
- 40:34Speaker 2: be like, here it is. I don't want that to
- 40:39Speaker 2: be for my wife. When my wife see me, when
- 40:41Speaker 2: she see me coming, look at her face. Here comes daddy. Oh,
- 40:45Speaker 2: here comes daddy. You look at her face. And look
- 40:47Speaker 2: at mine. That's the way that should be. And that's
- 40:51Speaker 2: what we try to do. And we try to show.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Because I know I got a phone call even on you.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I don't know what y'all did to him on that tour.
- 40:58Speaker 2: But something changed. I talked to him. I ain't going
- 41:03Speaker 2: to say who it was. But it was like.
- 41:05Speaker 3: It changed me, man.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:07Speaker 1: It changed me. It changed the way I experienced myself.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Wow.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Because I was looking at life like the mental health
- 41:19Speaker 1: thing was something that God placed me in.
- 41:21Speaker 3: I know football.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I would have been a great coach had I went
- 41:26Speaker 1: that route because I love the game of football and
- 41:28Speaker 1: I'm very attentive to details. And then football is a
- 41:32Speaker 1: game of schemes. I love to think. I love to think.
- 41:36Speaker 1: And so being in this space of mental health and
- 41:41Speaker 1: always having to be theoretically, always having to be very
- 41:43Speaker 1: systemically on how you process people's pain and how you,
- 41:48Speaker 1: you know, move them out of it. I started to
- 41:51Speaker 1: see life like that. And by me seeing life like that,
- 41:55Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, let me put love
- 41:56Speaker 1: over here.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:58Speaker 1: And not realizing that that is probably part of it.
- 42:03Speaker 1: That is probably one of the greatest power of healing
- 42:06Speaker 1: is love.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Wow.
- 42:08Speaker 2: You just made me think of something and it made
- 42:10Speaker 2: my eyes water. I definitely can honestly say I probably
- 42:16Speaker 2: wouldn't be here had it not been for my wife.
- 42:19Speaker 3: So love saved you?
- 42:21Speaker 2: Man, when I'm telling you the way that woman prayed
- 42:25Speaker 2: for me when I was going through that and every
- 42:30Speaker 2: time I talk about it, it makes me get this
- 42:32Speaker 2: way because I remember the night that she was like
- 42:36Speaker 2: just lay here and She would just lay there with me,
- 42:39Speaker 2: and she would just pray. No, it's just like, let
- 42:44Speaker 2: me just pray for you. If you need an open
- 42:46Speaker 2: space to talk. Because my wife, she hadn't been a
- 42:49Speaker 2: big talker. And so I just saw good. I don't
- 42:53Speaker 2: have to talk about it with you. But once I
- 42:56Speaker 2: opened up to her, she'll check me. Every once in
- 42:58Speaker 2: a while, she'll come, how are you? And I'm good. No,
- 43:01Speaker 2: how are you up here? Oh, okay, you're talking about
- 43:04Speaker 2: up there. Today may not be the best day. My man, she,
- 43:09Speaker 2: that woman sit there. I don't know what she was
- 43:11Speaker 2: doing to me. You know, sometimes you get sad. She
- 43:13Speaker 2: probably do a little kiss on the neck. Wait a minute, girl. No.
- 43:17Speaker 3: You get about all your pain.
- 43:20Speaker 2: But, no, she, love saved me. Love really did. And
- 43:27Speaker 2: I'm so glad, I'm so grateful that I'm able to
- 43:31Speaker 2: experience this. And I tell people all the time, This
- 43:36Speaker 2: is not so far-fetched that it can't happen for you.
- 43:40Speaker 2: You just have to be open to it. That's all
- 43:43Speaker 2: you have to be open to. And I'm not saying
- 43:45Speaker 2: that there's not going to be heartbreak. There's going to
- 43:47Speaker 2: be heartbreak. But there are certain things that we don't
- 43:52Speaker 2: succeed in. We don't just totally, you know. You get
- 43:55Speaker 2: fired from a job. You don't stop working the way I'm,
- 43:58Speaker 2: you know.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Well, my question, did you know your wife was going
- 44:01Speaker 3: to be that type of woman?
- 44:04Speaker 2: I didn't know, but I could see the type of
- 44:08Speaker 2: woman she was.
- 44:10Speaker 1: How would you be able to identify that for some man?
- 44:13Speaker 1: Because there's a lot of young men that are watching
- 44:16Speaker 1: this that, you know, this thing right.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Now, a lot of men don't want to be married,
- 44:23Speaker 3: and they're opting out.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I had a daughter already, and my
- 44:30Speaker 2: little test was I have And it was so cruel.
- 44:33Speaker 2: I'm telling y'all this was cruel before I say it.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I bring a girl over and I got my daughter.
- 44:39Speaker 2: And first thing I want to see is how she
- 44:40Speaker 2: interact with my daughter. I give my daughter to her.
- 44:44Speaker 2: And my daughter was the test. My daughter was looking like, okay,
- 44:49Speaker 2: all right, I'll holler at you later. I was literally
- 44:52Speaker 2: doing that. Like how they interact with my daughter. If
- 44:54Speaker 2: they was trying to, hey, no, you trying to, oh,
- 44:58Speaker 2: I'm going to give you the claw. Claw yourself right
- 45:01Speaker 2: onto your car. And I just seen the way Tam
- 45:04Speaker 2: interacted with my child. It wasn't just like, hey, I'm here.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Come on, I'm just here to nurture you. Here, okay,
- 45:12Speaker 2: go back to your daddy. It was not, she wasn't
- 45:15Speaker 2: forcing it. It was just like, you know, we were
- 45:18Speaker 2: just friends. We were strictly friends. And that's what I
- 45:23Speaker 2: think has saved our marriage as well. Because we started
- 45:27Speaker 2: our relationship as friends. We were homeboy, homegirl friends. She
- 45:32Speaker 2: knew the little ladies in my life. And she would
- 45:37Speaker 2: often tell me, you know you ain't right for that.
- 45:39Speaker 2: You need to stop. Don't do that girl like that.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Don't do that.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Yeah. The woman who wound up my wife would tell me,
- 45:45Speaker 2: you shouldn't be doing that. And I just started to
- 45:47Speaker 2: see traits in her like, this is forever. Because you
- 45:50Speaker 2: could tell if somebody is temporary or forever. You could
- 45:55Speaker 2: tell if somebody is temporary.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Wow.
- 45:58Speaker 2: And I just looked at her like, If I get
- 46:00Speaker 2: involved with her, that's going to be forever.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Did that scare you?
- 46:06Speaker 2: Yeah, because that means you've got to lay down your
- 46:08Speaker 2: player card. You've got to throw it away. It scared me,
- 46:12Speaker 2: but that's what I wanted. My mom didn't have successful marriages.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Her mom didn't have successful marriages. So I knew once
- 46:23Speaker 2: I said I do, I wanted to just, that was
- 46:27Speaker 2: it for me. I only want to be married once. No,
- 46:30Speaker 2: I mean, if you got divorced, that's fine. You can
- 46:34Speaker 2: still find love and find that forever. But I only
- 46:37Speaker 2: want to do it once. And I had to find
- 46:39Speaker 2: that person who God has put here for me. I
- 46:43Speaker 2: always tell her, the Lord put me here specifically for you.
- 46:47Speaker 2: He put me here specifically for you, and you here
- 46:50Speaker 2: specifically for me. I believe that. I believe that. To
- 46:55Speaker 2: death do us part. Not till we kill each other
- 46:57Speaker 2: do us part like some couple, but to death do
- 46:59Speaker 2: us part. Yeah, and I believe that.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Man, when I tell you your story, every time I
- 47:06Speaker 1: hear you guys talk or hear you talk about how
- 47:10Speaker 1: you guys start off friendships, but I think the most
- 47:13Speaker 1: beautiful thing for me is to see what you guys
- 47:16Speaker 1: have built.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Together.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Together. And to see that, man, like, the thing is
- 47:27Speaker 2: I couldn't have built it without her and she couldn't
- 47:29Speaker 2: have built it without me it was like the match
- 47:33Speaker 2: of this is how it was meant to be I
- 47:38Speaker 2: definitely married to somebody else I would have probably grinded
- 47:41Speaker 2: and tried to make some stuff and she probably would
- 47:45Speaker 2: have grinded but it would not have been like this
- 47:48Speaker 2: I know it wouldn't have been like this because just
- 47:52Speaker 2: the things that The Lord put together. You ever seen
- 47:56Speaker 2: the little cartoon, The Wanda Twins? We were just made.
- 48:00Speaker 2: It's like The Wanda Twins. We were made for each
- 48:02Speaker 2: other like that. And I just know that that's just
- 48:05Speaker 2: the grace of God on us, man. It has been
- 48:07Speaker 2: nothing but the grace of God, man. We've had an
- 48:10Speaker 2: opportunity to be in a music space that changed the
- 48:15Speaker 2: culture of the way that they do gospel music. We've
- 48:18Speaker 2: had an opportunity to be a part of the mogul
- 48:21Speaker 2: movement who changed the way people do television and movies.
- 48:25Speaker 2: And it was like, how in the world do two
- 48:28Speaker 2: people from Fort Worth, Texas, living in Stop 6 Eastwood area,
- 48:33Speaker 2: the two of those people get to become a part
- 48:36Speaker 2: of stuff that shaped culture?
- 48:38Speaker 3: Yeah. And to be as legendary as you got.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Because there's no way you can go in the world
- 48:44Speaker 1: and nobody don't know Mr.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Brown.
- 48:46Speaker 2: And for me, I forget. I just be like, I'm
- 48:50Speaker 2: in the store. Where your security? For what? What we
- 48:54Speaker 2: need security for? It's just nothing but the grace of God, man.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Do you feel like in this season of your life,
- 49:00Speaker 1: are you able to look back and just be in awe?
- 49:04Speaker 1: Because I'm sure you're being very reflective in these days.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:09Speaker 2: At 60, yeah. You know, they gave Tam and I
- 49:13Speaker 2: icons of the culture, and we were like, why are
- 49:16Speaker 2: they doing this? For what? And then they played the video.
- 49:20Speaker 2: I think it was us, Pharrell, LL Cool J, and
- 49:24Speaker 2: Bobby Brown were all on it that night. And I
- 49:27Speaker 2: was like, these guys are legends. They're icons. And they
- 49:32Speaker 2: started showing the stuff. They started going down. And I
- 49:37Speaker 2: didn't realize we had done all of that. I just
- 49:39Speaker 2: was like, we've been grinding. We got in this to
- 49:42Speaker 2: take care of, to feed our family and to be
- 49:45Speaker 2: like icons of the culture. I couldn't even talk because
- 49:49Speaker 2: I was just so blown away. I just stood there
- 49:52Speaker 2: and cried for like two minutes. And then we, I
- 49:54Speaker 2: don't need, I couldn't say nothing because I'm like, I
- 50:00Speaker 2: don't consider myself like an icon of the culture. I'm
- 50:04Speaker 2: just trying to feed all these kids and grandkids and
- 50:07Speaker 2: make sure everybody good and take care of mama and them.
- 50:11Speaker 2: I don't know. It's nothing but the grace of God.
- 50:13Speaker 2: I keep saying it. Nothing but the grace of God.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Nothing but.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Man, brother, I always enjoy our time. There's a question
- 50:22Speaker 1: that I asked on the podcast. This is just here
- 50:26Speaker 1: with Dr. J, healing in real time. When you think
- 50:29Speaker 1: about the word healing, what does that mean for you?
- 50:35Speaker 2: Peace. Peace of mind. Mine have come in the last
- 50:41Speaker 2: two to three years. Wow. This is another thing I
- 50:46Speaker 2: was in Tamil that had to pray for me. I
- 50:48Speaker 2: used to be tormented and agonized in my sleep. It
- 50:51Speaker 2: would be just tormented. I would wake up fighting and
- 50:55Speaker 2: doing all of this and I don't know where it
- 50:58Speaker 2: came from. I don't know what it was a result of.
- 51:01Speaker 2: But just healing. Healing. And just finding peace and finding
- 51:07Speaker 2: that space and that place. Because they're different. Finding a
- 51:11Speaker 2: space mentally and finding a place. I find my place
- 51:15Speaker 2: when I go out to the ranch. But my space
- 51:17Speaker 2: is where I mentally shut down everything and all of
- 51:21Speaker 2: this and find a space for me to just say,
- 51:23Speaker 2: let me take care of me. Let me make sure.
- 51:26Speaker 2: That's my space. Now I find a place where I
- 51:30Speaker 2: can go. You've seen my refuge. Find the space and
- 51:34Speaker 2: the place. to find your peace?
- 51:38Speaker 1: Listen, finding a space and a place to find your
- 51:44Speaker 1: peace and to find your healing.
- 51:47Speaker 3: Healing can mean a myriad.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Of different things for so many different people depending on
- 51:54Speaker 1: your healing journey. And as you heard David talk about
- 51:58Speaker 1: his marriage, his family, learning how to do for him
- 52:05Speaker 1: Healing is not easy, but what healing does take is openness.
- 52:10Speaker 1: As you talked about being open to receive love, being
- 52:14Speaker 1: open to live in love, being open to love.
- 52:18Speaker 3: It all takes openness. And I don't know where you
- 52:20Speaker 3: are in your life, and maybe.
- 52:21Speaker 1: You close your heart, you close your mind, and you
- 52:24Speaker 1: kind of close yourself off from people. You can't heal
- 52:27Speaker 1: without community. It's only in community that we find others
- 52:31Speaker 1: to bear witness, not just to your pain, But also
- 52:34Speaker 1: you find people that can bear witness to your recovery,
- 52:39Speaker 1: to your betterness, to your overall mental health.
- 52:43Speaker 3: Because without community, our mental health would be compromised. We
- 52:48Speaker 3: need each other.
- 52:49Speaker 1: And I'm hoping that you find your tribe, find your people,
- 52:53Speaker 1: find your community, find somebody to join with and take
- 52:58Speaker 1: the healing journey. Listen, this has been great talking with
- 53:01Speaker 1: my great brother, great friend, David Mann. Listen, they have
- 53:04Speaker 1: a show on YouTube called- Man Family Dinner. Man Family Dinner.
- 53:08Speaker 1: On Man TV, yeah. On Man TV. It's a great show.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I just had the opportunity to be a part of
- 53:12Speaker 1: it and all the things. And I've always watched the
- 53:15Speaker 1: reruns of the Meet the Browns, man. And, I mean,
- 53:22Speaker 1: just every- Listen, brother, I'm telling you this.
- 53:27Speaker 3: I'm going to give you your flowers because I'm not
- 53:28Speaker 3: going to be at your funeral talking. I ain't going
- 53:31Speaker 3: to do that. I'm going to get up there and clown.
- 53:33Speaker 2: And that's what everybody, they know they have a good time.
- 53:36Speaker 1: But I'm going to give you your flowers and say
- 53:38Speaker 1: you are more iconic now for the work that you're
- 53:42Speaker 1: doing than for the work that you did.
- 53:45Speaker 3: Because we're not seeing Mr. Brown. We're not just seeing
- 53:49Speaker 3: a character.
- 53:50Speaker 1: We're seeing the man that you are and the man
- 53:55Speaker 1: that you have become. And I also want to give
- 53:58Speaker 1: you your flowers for aging well, black man.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Wow. To be 60 and to.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Be looking as well as you do and to take
- 54:04Speaker 1: care of yourself. And there are so many different partnerships
- 54:07Speaker 1: that you have that we've talked about, men, wellness, and
- 54:10Speaker 1: health care, and getting better and all that. But to
- 54:13Speaker 1: see you taking your own advice and taking care of yourself, man,
- 54:17Speaker 1: it's encouraging to see, brother.
- 54:19Speaker 2: And thank you for having a space and a place
- 54:23Speaker 2: that we can come and share. And then you can
- 54:26Speaker 2: just have the paperwork, the letters, to be lettered and
- 54:30Speaker 2: show those guys, This is how you do it. And
- 54:33Speaker 2: also have the experience.
- 54:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, sir.
- 54:35Speaker 2: And have the experience to just say, look, bro, let's heal.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Yeah, let's heal.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Let's heal, bro.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Until next time, guys. Remember, healing is a journey and
- 54:46Speaker 1: wholeness is the destination. And I'm Dr. J. And this
- 54:49Speaker 1: is another episode of Just Heal with Dr. J where
- 54:52Speaker 1: we are healing in real time.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Man, we always have just some good conversation.
- 55:03Speaker 3: I just love conversation.
- 55:06Speaker 2: I'm telling you, I sent you that text message. I'm
- 55:09Speaker 2: going to drag you in there. That's a brand partner
- 55:13Speaker 2: that we're doing. I was like, man, I told Sherry
- 55:16Speaker 2: that handles our brand partner stuff. I said, I got
- 55:19Speaker 2: to have Dr. J if I do that. I said,
