Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Sights, Sounds From The Locker Room As Birds Prepare For Cowboys
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. And just
- 0:14Speaker 1: some programming notes in terms of the coverage. I will
- 0:19Speaker 1: have the rookie diary with Eagles guard Micah Morris on
- 0:24Speaker 1: the podcasting platform in the next day or so. We
- 0:27Speaker 1: recorded our conversation on Friday. The written piece will be
- 0:31Speaker 1: over on InsideTheBirds.com this weekend. I will be doing a
- 0:36Speaker 1: notebook where it's sort of leftovers that I do from
- 0:39Speaker 1: things I picked up that I think are pretty interesting
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the locker room, including a fun conversation I had
- 0:46Speaker 1: with Reek Wohan, because as it turns out in my research,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I found that Reek Wohan and I share the same
- 0:52Speaker 1: favorite movie, and that is Beverly Hills Cop. So we
- 0:55Speaker 1: spoke for five minutes or so just talking about that.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And I like doing those type of things because there are.
- 1:04Speaker 1: other things that I like to get into besides football
- 1:07Speaker 1: football's first and foremost, of course, but there's also different
- 1:11Speaker 1: elements that I like to incorporate because it allows you
- 1:14Speaker 1: to get to know the player behind the helmet and,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and kind of what they're all about. So that was
- 1:20Speaker 1: a fun chat that we had Hollywood Brown. We heard
- 1:24Speaker 1: from him. That'll be in the notebook as well. And
- 1:28Speaker 1: there are some other things I'm sure that I'll come across.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Hopefully I'll get to talk to Joe Milton and, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: on Saturday and that will end up in my notebook
- 1:37Speaker 1: as well just some some short notes just to bring
- 1:41Speaker 1: you some of that coverage because I don't want it
- 1:43Speaker 1: to be on the cutting room floor so all that
- 1:46Speaker 1: and more coming your way of course the Eagles face
- 1:48Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys and Monday Night Football at home at
- 1:52Speaker 1: Lincoln Financial Field and today's practice was the equivalent of
- 1:56Speaker 1: a normal Thursday practice so it's the longest and most
- 2:00Speaker 1: intense of the week for the Eagles and They have
- 2:03Speaker 1: a pretty lengthy injury report. We'll talk about what that
- 2:06Speaker 1: means momentarily. So, not practicing. Defensive back Michael Carter, abdomen.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Tight end Dallas Goddard, knee. Outside linebacker Jonathan Grenard, ankle.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Wide receiver Devontae Smith, hamstring. Outside linebacker Nolan Smith, concussion.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And wide receiver Dontavian Wicks, ankle. Okay, so I mentioned
- 2:27Speaker 1: on Thursday, which was the first practice of the week,
- 2:30Speaker 1: that you never want to overreact to the first day
- 2:33Speaker 1: because there are different things that the team could be doing.
- 2:38Speaker 1: For example, on the first day, when you don't see
- 2:41Speaker 1: Devontae Smith practice, perhaps that had to do with trying
- 2:46Speaker 1: to maintain the injury and get him to Monday night
- 2:49Speaker 1: and just try to preserve it and lessen the wear
- 2:52Speaker 1: and tear on the hamstring. But.
- 2:54Speaker 2: For a second day, Devontae's sidelined. Not a good thing.
- 2:58Speaker 1: He's been battling this hamstring really since August, and it
- 3:03Speaker 1: seemingly gets aggravated with, you know, the second he gets
- 3:07Speaker 1: back out there, it gets aggravated again seemingly, and that's
- 3:11Speaker 1: something that only rest will allow that to fully heal.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And in a season where you need all your playmakers
- 3:19Speaker 1: as you're sitting there at 2-4, It's difficult.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He's your top receiver.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And you also have to make sure that the player
- 3:26Speaker 1: is remaining healthy and doing everything that he can.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And he certainly is. That's Devontae Smith.
- 3:31Speaker 1: He's a consummate professional. But there's not a lot you
- 3:40Speaker 1: can do for a hamstring.
- 3:41Speaker 2: It just needs time.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And while I'm going through these injuries, there's just something
- 3:45Speaker 1: that I want to say here because I noticed some
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the comments on social media. Like, for example, when
- 3:53Speaker 1: I put out there that no practice or no sign
- 3:57Speaker 1: of Jonathan Bernard with the ankle, he wasn't on the practice.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Field when we were out there.
- 4:00Speaker 1: A lot of really aggressive comments in terms of just
- 4:05Speaker 1: saying he's a bust, he's this, he's that, he's not
- 4:08Speaker 1: trying or whatever it is. And look, don't you think
- 4:12Speaker 1: that the player wants to be out there? And I'm
- 4:15Speaker 1: not speaking to the vast majority, but it feels like
- 4:18Speaker 1: in a season like this where injuries are compiling and
- 4:22Speaker 1: You know, there's going to be public frustration. I understand that.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But no one's going to be more frustrated than the
- 4:28Speaker 1: player themselves. They want to be out there. They are
- 4:32Speaker 1: doing everything that they can to be out there.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And it shouldn't be.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Like, injuries happen. They're a part of the game. Every
- 4:40Speaker 1: team experiences it. The Eagles have been very fortunate over
- 4:44Speaker 1: the past... several years that they've alluded the injury bug,
- 4:49Speaker 1: but it's gotten them this year. And in this case,
- 4:52Speaker 1: look at edge rusher. It's gotten them pretty good. And
- 4:55Speaker 1: the running back room, two of the guys are on
- 4:57Speaker 1: injured reserve. And so these things happen, but the frustration
- 5:03Speaker 1: should not be directed at the player. It's the circumstance
- 5:06Speaker 1: that you should be frustrated with, not the player. I
- 5:10Speaker 1: can assure you that they're doing everything that they can
- 5:12Speaker 1: to be out there. No one wants to miss time
- 5:15Speaker 1: and not be a.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Part of it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So that's just sort of a public service announcement because
- 5:21Speaker 1: I see it, whether it be in my comments or
- 5:23Speaker 1: just scrolling through X, and it just feels like it's
- 5:27Speaker 1: really unnecessary. And I think a lot of the anger
- 5:31Speaker 1: is misdirected. A lot of the frustration is certainly misdirected.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We got a chance to talk to Hollywood Brown today.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And I have to say, I'm really impressed with the
- 5:40Speaker 1: way that he's handled everything. Pretty much the sentiment is
- 5:44Speaker 1: he's doing his best to navigate not playing. And he
- 5:47Speaker 1: said he's handling it much better now than he would
- 5:50Speaker 1: have if he were a younger player in his younger years.
- 5:53Speaker 1: but he's just patiently waiting for his opportunity. He said,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I got good teammates. I've got good coaches. He has
- 5:59Speaker 1: a positive mindset and a positive outlook. And I can
- 6:03Speaker 1: tell you from being around, you know, the team all season,
- 6:07Speaker 1: he's carried himself like a true professional hasn't sulked, hasn't
- 6:11Speaker 1: hung his head. It isn't complaining.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Uh, not there's no woe is me.
- 6:16Speaker 1: He's approaching it like a, like a professional and he
- 6:20Speaker 1: understands the situation. Now you're not going to be overly,
- 6:24Speaker 1: if you're, if you're a competitor at the highest level,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you're never going to be okay with not playing, but
- 6:31Speaker 1: it's something that he's learning to, he's learning to deal
- 6:34Speaker 1: with because everywhere he's gone, he's been a focal point
- 6:37Speaker 1: in an offense. This is a guy who was a
- 6:38Speaker 1: first round pick. And so this is sort of uncharted
- 6:42Speaker 1: territory for him. But I was really impressed with how
- 6:45Speaker 1: he's handled himself and how he what he had to
- 6:47Speaker 1: say today. And he said he's just taking it day
- 6:50Speaker 1: by day. And when he gets his opportunity, he's going
- 6:53Speaker 1: to be ready. And that's what he's focusing on. He
- 6:57Speaker 1: he talked about, you know, his comfort level in the offense.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And he said, I mean, I'm pretty comfortable here. it
- 7:03Speaker 1: takes all 11.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It can never be one guy.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So just coming out for, for everybody trying to execute
- 7:08Speaker 1: and stay above the sticks.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I think that'll be important.
- 7:11Speaker 1: He mentioned that he, you know, when, when it was
- 7:16Speaker 1: brought to his attention, you know, we, we thought you
- 7:18Speaker 1: had a good training camp and, did you expect to
- 7:21Speaker 1: play more? He said, yeah, I did, but I do
- 7:23Speaker 1: understand stuff happens. I mean, you can't take nothing personal
- 7:27Speaker 1: in this business. So you kind of just got to
- 7:28Speaker 1: go about your process. And when that time happens, whatever happens,
- 7:33Speaker 1: you just got to be ready for it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: So that's a veteran answer.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And he said, yeah, in terms of it being a
- 7:41Speaker 1: hard lesson for a lot of people to learn, how
- 7:44Speaker 1: did you realize and navigate that? And he said, definitely
- 7:48Speaker 1: just being older and being in the league for a minute.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I wouldn't have handled it well as a younger guy,
- 7:53Speaker 1: but now just knowing I'm blessed to be here.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I mean, my plan is not always my plan. It's
- 7:58Speaker 2: God's plan.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And the more I got comfortable with that, I can't
- 8:02Speaker 1: be mad about a situation because maybe that's not what
- 8:04Speaker 1: God called for me.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Hey, Philly fans.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines.

- 10:43Speaker 3: Make sure to let them know we sent you.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So there you have it, just a little bit of
- 10:48Speaker 1: a sample size of what Hollywood Brown had to say.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So the reason why I bring that up is because
- 10:54Speaker 1: I just mentioned the injuries to Wicks and Devontae. All
- 10:58Speaker 1: of a sudden, and he was inactive last week, a
- 11:00Speaker 1: healthy scratch, you may need to rely on a Hollywood Brown.
- 11:04Speaker 1: You're certainly going to have to call upon Darius Cooper.
- 11:08Speaker 1: and Makai Lemon for larger roles, Elijah Moore there as well.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And I'm curious to see what Hollywood Brown can do if,
- 11:15Speaker 1: in fact, you don't get Dontavion or Devontae, because he
- 11:18Speaker 1: does have speed. He does have a certain skill set
- 11:23Speaker 1: that I think would complement what they have in terms
- 11:26Speaker 1: of their other players. He is good in the open field.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He has good short area quickness. Maybe the Eagles will
- 11:32Speaker 1: use him as a deep threat. He hasn't been used
- 11:34Speaker 1: in that capacity in his career, but I just want
- 11:36Speaker 1: to just sort of emphasize that he's handled himself about
- 11:42Speaker 1: as well as anyone could expect for someone who's always
- 11:44Speaker 1: grown accustomed to playing, as evidenced by some of the
- 11:47Speaker 1: answers I just read for you from my transcript from
- 11:51Speaker 1: the interview. So, and he spoke to a small group
- 11:56Speaker 1: of us that were standing at his locker after Makai
- 11:59Speaker 1: Lemon spoke.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So, it was good to hear from Hollywood.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Now let's get to some of the other injuries, the
- 12:06Speaker 1: limited participants, because there are some names there that I will,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I will touch on and kind of give you an
- 12:13Speaker 1: idea of what I'm expecting. Limited running back, Saquon Barkley,
- 12:17Speaker 1: hamstring guard, Landon Dickerson, knee pectoral, outside linebacker, AJ Epinesa, back,
- 12:22Speaker 1: outside linebacker, J. Lux Hunt, knee ankle, tackle Fred Johnson, illness.
- 12:26Speaker 1: guard Willie Lampkin, illness. Defensive tackle Mauro Jomo, abdomen and
- 12:31Speaker 1: guard Tyler Steen, shoulder. Saquon Barkley, there's been no setback.
- 12:36Speaker 1: He was limited on Thursday.
- 12:37Speaker 2: He's limited again.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That would seemingly bode well for his prospects of playing
- 12:42Speaker 1: on Monday night. And needless to say, that gives the
- 12:45Speaker 1: Eagles an offensive centerpiece that they can lean on.
- 12:49Speaker 2: They have to get this running game going.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And I know we talk a lot about Saquon Barkley,
- 12:54Speaker 1: the player, the on-field impact. And I may have mentioned
- 12:57Speaker 1: this yesterday, but I want to talk about it again.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Not enough is made about Saquon Barkley, the leader. Because
- 13:04Speaker 1: while Saquon's been out, Jordan Mailata has done a lot
- 13:07Speaker 1: of the heavy lifting, at least as far as we
- 13:09Speaker 1: can see from a media perspective. It's been Jordan Mailata
- 13:14Speaker 1: sort of taking center stage and being the spokesperson, handling
- 13:18Speaker 1: all the questions, and really being the guy who's guiding
- 13:23Speaker 1: a lot of these players through uncharted territory. But Saquon Barkley,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you can just see that being a leader is effortless
- 13:32Speaker 1: to him. And his perspective on things and positive mindset,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I think, goes a long way in terms of just
- 13:40Speaker 1: keeping things together and not letting it get away. And
- 13:44Speaker 1: he's been through some bad times with the New York Giants,
- 13:47Speaker 1: needless to say.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And in Philadelphia, there haven't been many.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And for a lot of the players in that locker
- 13:53Speaker 1: room that are coming from winning college programs like Georgia
- 13:57Speaker 1: and Alabama, for example, this is something that they're not
- 14:01Speaker 1: accustomed to. And so having someone there that are sort
- 14:04Speaker 1: of really stabilizing presences like Jordan Maillard and Saquon Barkley
- 14:09Speaker 1: are much needed for a time like this, especially, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: I say this again, when you don't have Elaine Johnson
- 14:15Speaker 1: or Cam Juergens or, of course, Jalen Hurts. you need
- 14:20Speaker 1: to be able to have some of those faces, those names,
- 14:23Speaker 1: and those presences to really guide this team through this
- 14:28Speaker 1: adversity right now that they're going through. And I've said
- 14:31Speaker 1: this before, and I'll say it again. I've said it
- 14:34Speaker 1: last year. I've said it the year before. Saquon Barkley
- 14:37Speaker 1: is just a natural born leader, and it's conveyed in
- 14:40Speaker 1: his answers. It's conveyed in his conviction and his messaging.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And I think that that is going to be a
- 14:47Speaker 1: huge asset. You can lead while you're not playing. There's
- 14:52Speaker 1: things you can do in the meeting rooms. There's things
- 14:54Speaker 1: you can do on the sideline. But when you're on
- 14:57Speaker 1: the field now, you couple that with your inherent leadership qualities,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and now all of a sudden you're able to really–
- 15:06Speaker 1: impart your message on your teammates. And I think Saquon
- 15:10Speaker 1: is a really good complement to what they have.
- 15:12Speaker 2: As a leadership, in terms of leadership with Jordan Mailata.
- 15:16Speaker 1: So Saquon, I think, is trending towards being available on
- 15:21Speaker 1: Monday night, which will be a huge boost for this
- 15:23Speaker 1: Eagles offense. Landon Dickerson, limited again, knee pectoral. So let
- 15:28Speaker 1: me just tell you the offensive line configuration that we saw.
- 15:32Speaker 2: And it was brief. We were out there.
- 15:34Speaker 1: For about maybe 20-ish minutes or so on Friday, and
- 15:38Speaker 1: from left to right, it was Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson,
- 15:41Speaker 1: Drew Kendall, Tyler Steen, and Markel Bell. That's the best
- 15:44Speaker 1: five that they can field right now, and I think
- 15:46Speaker 1: you feel pretty good about that. If you're able to
- 15:49Speaker 1: get that lineup on Monday night, a lot needs to
- 15:52Speaker 1: be determined before then, but I think Landon being there,
- 15:57Speaker 1: if he's able to be available Monday night, be your
- 16:00Speaker 1: left guard. That physicality, that power that he brings, that
- 16:06Speaker 1: road grader style that he has should help. You couple
- 16:10Speaker 1: that with Jordan Milato on the left side and all
- 16:12Speaker 1: of a sudden with Saquon Barkley back there, it may
- 16:15Speaker 1: not be as tough sledding as it's been in terms
- 16:17Speaker 1: of the running game. And as we get to The
- 16:22Speaker 1: full participants, there's a name on there that I'll circle
- 16:25Speaker 1: back on, but full. Zach Bond, shoulder. Cornerback, Ja'Corian Bennett, knee.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Wide receiver, Hollywood Brown, ankle. Tight end, Grant Calcaterra, back. Linebacker,
- 16:34Speaker 1: Jahad Campbell, wrist. Defensive tackle, Jalen Carter, wrist. Wide receiver,
- 16:38Speaker 1: Britton Covey, shoulder. Defensive tackle, Jordan Davis, shin, thumb. Outside linebacker,
- 16:43Speaker 1: Arnold Evacati, shoulder. Center, Drew Kendall, knee. Tight end, Eli Stowers, quad.
- 16:49Speaker 1: The name that should ring a bell here, or that
- 16:52Speaker 1: should really resonate being on this list, is center Drew Kendall,
- 16:56Speaker 1: who for the first time in a couple weeks has
- 16:58Speaker 1: been upgraded. He was limited yesterday. He's now a full participant,
- 17:03Speaker 1: and I just outlined the offensive line configuration that we
- 17:07Speaker 1: saw in the early stages of practice, and that would
- 17:11Speaker 1: seemingly be Bode well for Drew Kendall.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Of course, he's full.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And assuming there's no setbacks between now and then, he's
- 17:18Speaker 1: going to be your center. And now if you all
- 17:21Speaker 1: of a sudden get Landon in the mix, that gives
- 17:23Speaker 1: you a little bit more of a stabilizing, a little
- 17:30Speaker 1: bit more stability there on the offensive line. And Jordan Davis, again,
- 17:35Speaker 1: full participant with the shin, thumb. But just circling back
- 17:41Speaker 1: really quickly to the limited participants, Jalex Hunt, that's also
- 17:48Speaker 1: a positive sign that there was no setback.
- 17:50Speaker 2: He was limited again. Now, Vic Van Joe said it's possible.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I would imagine if you have your druthers, you would
- 17:58Speaker 1: want to give Jalex another week to recover from that
- 18:01Speaker 1: and ensure that he's as close to full strength as possible.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But you also need bodies, and Jalex is the ultimate
- 18:08Speaker 1: competitor there. as Vic Fangio said last week, so I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: sure he's going to do everything that he can to
- 18:13Speaker 1: be available.
- 18:14Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It's too early to tell. We'll see what Saturday's practice brings.
- 18:21Speaker 1: That's the final one this week. Then you'll have later
- 18:24Speaker 1: that afternoon the official game statuses that'll put in perspective
- 18:29Speaker 1: what you can expect for Monday night.

- 21:45Speaker 4: Prize picks run your game.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And as I mentioned, the Eagles have some open roster spots.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I would imagine one of those will go to Zach
- 21:54Speaker 1: Ertz or perhaps a Grant Calcaterra or an Eli Stout.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I mean, they need another tight end on the roster.
- 22:01Speaker 1: They waived EJ Jenkins on Thursday. They also need another
- 22:06Speaker 1: running back. So whether that comes via elevation or outright signing,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and that player would have to be Elijah Mitchell, remember.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Well, it could be Jaden Blue as well. He's on
- 22:15Speaker 2: the practice squad.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But remember that Carson Steele was waived injured, and Shipley
- 22:20Speaker 1: and Bigsby are on injured reserve. So maybe it's Elijah
- 22:24Speaker 1: Mitchell who gets the nod. And he's done well in
- 22:27Speaker 1: this system in the past. I know that he was
- 22:31Speaker 1: doing some good things in training camp before he was waived.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I think he suffered an injury early in camp. So
- 22:37Speaker 1: those are certain things you're going to want to keep
- 22:39Speaker 1: an eye on over the weekend because I think– They
- 22:44Speaker 1: don't necessarily have to make that decision until either Sunday
- 22:48Speaker 1: or up to 4 p.m. Eastern Monday because it's a
- 22:51Speaker 1: Monday night game. So I imagine there's going to be
- 22:53Speaker 1: some movement there, and there has to be. You need
- 22:55Speaker 1: another tight end. You can't go into a game with
- 22:57Speaker 1: two running backs. So that's kind of where things stand
- 23:00Speaker 1: going into the final practice of the week. I think
- 23:04Speaker 1: we'll hear from Zach Ertz on Saturday. I'm going to
- 23:07Speaker 1: try to talk to Joe Milton. He's on my list
- 23:10Speaker 1: of players that I wanted to make sure I got
- 23:11Speaker 1: a chance to speak to this week. Maybe I'll try
- 23:14Speaker 1: to talk to Elijah Mitchell and add that into my
- 23:16Speaker 1: notebook just because he's a player who's been around.
- 23:19Speaker 2: He's in Kyle Shanahan's system with the 49ers.
- 23:22Speaker 1: He was a starting running back for a while, was
- 23:25Speaker 1: ravaged by injuries or plagued by injuries in his career. And,
- 23:29Speaker 1: I'm kind of curious to hear his perspective on the
- 23:32Speaker 1: offense and how he fits into it and all that,
- 23:35Speaker 1: just to get a little bit better background, because we
- 23:38Speaker 1: didn't get a chance to speak to him in the
- 23:40Speaker 1: brief time that he was there in training camp.
- 23:41Speaker 2: So, you know, I gave you a lot of information.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But with that, that will do it for this episode
- 23:46Speaker 1: of DiCecco Daily. I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you
- 23:49Speaker 1: all on the next one.
