Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's going on everyone?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Emily Vadi here you are listening to five Minute Friday
- 0:24Speaker 2: from Hurdle.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I missed you last week. I needed a second.
- 0:27Speaker 2: If I'm being transparent, I just needed to take a
- 0:30Speaker 2: week to recalibrate.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But we are back.
- 0:33Speaker 2: The summer is in full swing, and I am here
- 0:36Speaker 2: to do my thing. I hope you all are doing well.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I feel like we're in the home stretch of summer,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and here in New York we have this fake fall moment,
- 0:44Speaker 2: which is candidly lovely but also a tad bit rude
- 0:49Speaker 2: because we are so far from fall, and despite it
- 0:54Speaker 2: being my favorite season, I am nowhere near ready to give.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Up summer just yet.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Can I tell you that there is nothing less appealing
- 1:06Speaker 2: than working on something that is hard. I'll say that again,
- 1:09Speaker 2: there is nothing less appealing than working on something that
- 1:12Speaker 2: is hard. I mean, there is reward in doing challenging things.
- 1:15Speaker 2: That's why I like to get up early and work
- 1:17Speaker 2: out and go down that path. But in my workouts lately,
- 1:21Speaker 2: I've been doing all of these hip strengthening exercises. My
- 1:25Speaker 2: hip on my right side is weaker than my hip
- 1:28Speaker 2: on my left side, and so I'm starting to notice
- 1:30Speaker 2: some discrepancies in the way that I move, and if
- 1:32Speaker 2: I don't address those discrepancies now, they may come back
- 1:37Speaker 2: to bite me in the butt later. And so as
- 1:40Speaker 2: a part of the strengthening work, I have a slew
- 1:42Speaker 2: of movements that I talked about a couple weeks ago
- 1:44Speaker 2: that are a part of my regular routine, and if
- 1:47Speaker 2: I am being transparent, I really don't like doing them.
- 1:50Speaker 1: But you know what I don't like more.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I don't like being injured and not being able to
- 1:54Speaker 2: do the things that I want. I don't want to
- 1:57Speaker 2: feel uncomfortable regularly. I don't want to be on the
- 2:00Speaker 2: bench because I didn't make the conscious choice now to
- 2:04Speaker 2: do something that could be good for me despite it
- 2:07Speaker 2: being difficult. I don't want to be sidelined later when
- 2:12Speaker 2: I could have made the choice to do something in
- 2:15Speaker 2: favor of my future self. Now, wow, that is applicable
- 2:21Speaker 2: to so much right. There are so many decisions that
- 2:24Speaker 2: we all make on a day to day basis that
- 2:26Speaker 2: could be benefiting our future selves. Now, I will be
- 2:31Speaker 2: the first person to tell you that I don't have
- 2:32Speaker 2: it all figured out. I am not doing a zillion
- 2:36Speaker 2: things every day that would set me up for an
- 2:40Speaker 2: ideal scenario, but I do have a few habits that
- 2:44Speaker 2: have major payoffs, and that's what I want to talk
- 2:49Speaker 2: about right now.
- 2:50Speaker 1: That is what I've been thinking a lot about.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I know that, for instance, by doing this strength work,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I am going to be better in the long haul,
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna be able to do what I want to do.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I also know that by sitting down and journaling every morning,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I'm going to feel better as my day goes on.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I know that by incorporating a certain amount of protein
- 3:13Speaker 2: into my diet every day, my body's going to feel
- 3:15Speaker 2: better as my day goes on. I'm going to feel
- 3:18Speaker 2: better and more at home in my body by making
- 3:21Speaker 2: these choices.
- 3:24Speaker 1: However, again, I am not perfect, and.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So what I would encourage you to do if you're
- 3:30Speaker 2: listening to this is think about what your priorities are.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Ask yourself, what is it that I can do within
- 3:38Speaker 2: my day to day to make my future self happier.
- 3:42Speaker 2: It doesn't need to be overhauling your entire routine, and
- 3:46Speaker 2: admittedly you shouldn't take on too many hard things at once,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but just like right now, the hard thing that I'm
- 3:53Speaker 2: integrating is all of this hip strengthening work. I'm doing
- 3:56Speaker 2: it about four days a week at this point. Choose
- 3:59Speaker 2: your hard thing. Choose your hard thing that's going to
- 4:03Speaker 2: cite your future self up for success, and I can
- 4:07Speaker 2: promise you you will not regret it. That's the prompt.
- 4:12Speaker 1: That's it.
- 4:14Speaker 2: What can you do for yourself this week that's setting
- 4:17Speaker 2: your future self up for success, even if it's challenging
- 4:21Speaker 2: one thing. That's all I want you to think about. Okay,
- 4:24Speaker 2: think about your goals, think about what I excite to you,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and tag me if you think about it. Over at
- 4:28Speaker 2: Emily Body and at Hurdle Podcast and now a listener question.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Hey Emily, my name is Brianna. I recently got let
- 4:35Speaker 2: go from my job and I know that this is
- 4:37Speaker 2: something that you've dealt with a couple of times now.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I remember you having a really good attitude about being
- 4:43Speaker 2: out of work. But I feel like I'm completely down
- 4:45Speaker 2: in the dumps and I don't know how to even
- 4:48Speaker 2: begin searching for something new. Would really love some insight
- 4:52Speaker 2: or any tips or tricks that you could offer me
- 4:54Speaker 2: during this unexpected time. Thanks so much for everything that
- 4:59Speaker 2: you do. Hey, Brianna.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yes, I have.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Been let go twice and I know that it is frightening.
- 5:04Speaker 2: So I want you to know that you are certainly
- 5:07Speaker 2: not alone in this. What I will tell you is
- 5:10Speaker 2: that there's only so much time that you can spend
- 5:12Speaker 2: every day applying for jobs. A couple of things that
- 5:16Speaker 2: are important. Update your resume, update your online presence, so
- 5:20Speaker 2: if someone googles you, what are they finding?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Take control of that narrative.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So maybe there's some value in investing in a personal website,
- 5:28Speaker 2: really taking a look at your social media channels, and
- 5:30Speaker 2: making sure that everything that you're putting out into the
- 5:32Speaker 2: world is something that you feel like represents you in
- 5:36Speaker 2: the way that you want someone new to interpret who
- 5:39Speaker 2: it is that you are and what it is that
- 5:41Speaker 2: you do. Now, that can take a lot of bandwidth
- 5:44Speaker 2: and a lot of time. If you have the financial means,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I would say, let someone help you if you can.
- 5:50Speaker 2: That is so important. I've learned over the last eight
- 5:53Speaker 2: years of figuring out whatever it is I'm doing in
- 5:56Speaker 2: this world, that there are going to be people that
- 5:57Speaker 2: do things better than me, and I should allow them
- 6:00Speaker 2: to focus on the things that I am good at
- 6:02Speaker 2: while they do what it is that they are good at.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I digress.
- 6:06Speaker 2: All of these things can take some time, but my
- 6:08Speaker 2: guess is that you'll still have a good chunk of it,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and sitting at your computer and being an anxious mess
- 6:14Speaker 2: may not be the solution. So do what I commonly
- 6:18Speaker 2: refer to as increase your service area of luck.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Be out and about meet people. Network.
- 6:24Speaker 2: It doesn't just need to be at specifically targeted networking events,
- 6:28Speaker 2: like just being out and about wherever you live in
- 6:30Speaker 2: your community is going to enable you to increase that
- 6:34Speaker 2: surface area to talk to more people, to learn more things,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and really put yourself out there.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I know it's not easy. Again, I have been there.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It is anxiety inducing and frustrating, but just trust me
- 6:47Speaker 2: when I say that you will be better once you
- 6:51Speaker 2: make it through this. I promise you again. The socials
- 6:54Speaker 2: over at Emily Body and at Hurdle Podcast Another Hurdle conquered.
