We're going to learn some vegetable words in French. Luna: Ooh, I love veggies. Let's do it. Lucas: Perfect. First up: la carotte. That means carrot. Luna: La carotte. Carrot. Easy! Lucas: Exactly. Listen again: la carotte. Luna: La carotte. Lucas: Good. Now, next: le chou. That's cabbage. Luna: Le chou? That sounds like 'shoe' but with a 'ch'. Lucas: Right. Le chou. Luna: Le chou. Cabbage. Got it. Lucas: Awesome. Next one: la tomate. Tomato. Luna: La tomate. That's almost the same as English. I love it. Lucas: Yep. La tomate. Say it back? Luna: La tomate. Lucas: Nice! Now, this next one is fun: le champignon. Mushroom. Luna: Le champignon. That's a mouthful! Cham-pi-gnon. Lucas: You got it. Le champignon. Luna: Le champignon. Lucas: And finally: l'oignon. Onion. Luna: L'oignon. Oh — that's different. It's like 'onion' but with a French twist. Lucas: Exactly. L'oignon. The 'g' is silent. L'oignon. Luna: L'oignon. Okay. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you say the French. Carrot. Luna: La carotte. Lucas: Cabbage. Luna: Le chou. Lucas: Tomato. Luna: La tomate. Lucas: Mushroom. Luna: Le champignon. Lucas: Onion. Luna: L'oignon. Lucas: Perfect! Now let's put them in a little scene. Imagine we're at a market. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: I'll be the vendor. You say: Je voudrais une carotte, s'il vous plaît. Luna: Je voudrais une carotte, s'il vous plaît. Lucas: Excellent! And I'd say: Voilà une carotte. Here's a carrot. Luna: Nice. What if I want a tomato? Lucas: Then you say: Je voudrais une tomate, s'il vous plaît. Luna: Je voudrais une tomate, s'il vous plaît. Lucas: And for cabbage? Remember, it's le chou, so: Je voudrais du chou. Luna: Oh right, because it's a masculine noun. Je voudrais du chou. Lucas: Exactly. And for mushrooms: Je voudrais des champignons. Plural. Luna: Je voudrais des champignons. Lucas: And onions: Je voudrais des oignons. Luna: Je voudrais des oignons. Lucas: You're doing so well, Luna! Luna: Thanks! This is actually really handy. I can picture myself at a French market now.
