- 0:00Hello, and welcome back to the Letterbox Podcast.
- 0:03I'm Lucy, and this is the place where people share real letters
- 0:07about the people, places, things or memories that have changed
- 0:13their lives. Before I read you today's
- 0:16letter, I want to tell you a little bit more about our
- 0:19writer. Her name is Laura and at 25
- 0:23years old she was told that she might not live to see 30.
- 0:28Today, she's about to celebrate that milestone.
- 0:33She's a mum of two and has lost almost 25 stone and just last
- 0:39week underwent excess skin removal surgery, the latest
- 0:43chapter in a journey that's transformed far more than her
- 0:46body. Now just quickly, I have a
- 0:49favour to ask of you and that is that if you are new here, if
- 0:55this is your first time listening to the Letterbox
- 0:57podcast, or perhaps you've been coming back over and over again
- 1:01but have not yet pressed the follow button, it would mean so
- 1:05much to me if you could press follow or subscribe.
- 1:09It does so much to support the podcast and really does send
- 1:13these letters all across the world.
- 1:16But here it is, the reason that you've come here today to hear
- 1:21Laura's letter. Dear Laura, I know you're
- 1:28waiting for your life to begin. You tell yourself that.
- 1:34You tell yourself that when you lose the weight, everything else
- 1:38will finally fall into place. You'll be happier, more
- 1:43confident, more worthy. You think the number on the
- 1:48scales is the thing standing between you and the life you've
- 1:52always wanted. I wish I could sit beside you
- 1:58for just 5 minutes, not because I want to tell you how hard it's
- 2:03going to be, but because I want to tell you just how beautiful
- 2:07your life is about to become. The funny thing is, you'll lose
- 2:13the weight not overnight, not in a month, not even in a year.
- 2:18It will take years. Years of starting again,
- 2:23learning, failing, getting back up, and discovering that
- 2:26consistency matters far more than perfection.
- 2:30There will be moments when you wonder if it's worth it, moments
- 2:34when you feel like nothing is changing, and moments where
- 2:37you'll want to give up. Please don't, because one day
- 2:45you'll look back and realise that every tiny decision
- 2:48mattered more than you ever knew.
- 2:52Is the part I really want you to know though.
- 2:57Losing the weight won't solve all your problems.
- 3:02And that's actually one of the greatest gifts you'll ever
- 3:06receive. Because while you're so focused
- 3:09on changing your body, your life will quietly begin changing
- 3:12around you. You'll become a mum to two
- 3:17beautiful little girls who will make your heart feel fuller than
- 3:21you ever thought possible. You'll build a marriage that
- 3:26feels like home. You'll find friendships that
- 3:29lift you up instead of making you question yourself.
- 3:32You'll discover a love for moving your body, not because
- 3:36you're trying to punish it, but because it makes you feel
- 3:40strong. You'll learn that taking care of
- 3:44your mental health is just as important as taking care of your
- 3:48physical health. You'll build a business that
- 3:51gives people confidence while finding your own at the very
- 3:54same time. The weight loss isn't the
- 3:59destination, it's simply the road that leads you to
- 4:02everything else. You'll learn that confidence
- 4:05doesn't arrive the moment you hit a goal weight.
- 4:09It grows every time you keep a promise to yourself, and
- 4:16somewhere along the way, something else will happen.
- 4:21You'll stop feeling like you have to be the funniest person
- 4:24in the room just to be noticed. You'll stop believing that you
- 4:29have to be the loudest, bravest, all the one making everyone else
- 4:32laugh to deserve your place. You'll realise that simply being
- 4:37you is enough. You don't have to apologise for
- 4:41existing. You don't have to perform.
- 4:44You don't have to prove yourself.
- 4:46You don't need to make yourself smaller to make other people
- 4:49comfortable, and you don't need to make yourself bigger just to
- 4:53be accepted. You can just be.
- 5:02And that version of you, the quieter 1, the calmer one, the
- 5:06one who finally feels at peace with herself, is the strongest
- 5:12version you'll ever become. So stop believing you're running
- 5:17out of time. Stop believing you've missed
- 5:20your chance. Give yourself grace, be patient,
- 5:25celebrate the little winds. Keep going, especially on the
- 5:29days you think nothing is changing.
- 5:33Because one day you'll realise you were never becoming someone
- 5:36else, you were simply becoming the person you always were.
- 5:41Underneath the fear, the doubt, and the weight, you thought you
- 5:49were changing your body. What you were really changing
- 5:54was the trajectory of your entire life.
- 5:59And one last thing. I know you think the happiest
- 6:03day of your life will be the day you finally hit your goal
- 6:05weight. It won't.
- 6:11The happiest moments will be the ordinary ones, Watching your
- 6:16daughters laugh, holding your husband's hand, walking into the
- 6:19gym without fear, looking in the mirror and smiling.
- 6:24Not because you've become perfect, but because you've
- 6:28finally become kind to yourself. Those are the moments your
- 6:36treasure, not the numbers on the scales.
- 6:41Because in the end, the greatest transformation was never your
- 6:45body, it was your belief in yourself.
- 6:50And that changes everything. For the first time in a very
- 6:57long time, you'll recognise yourself and you'll realise she
- 7:02was there all along. Love always, Laura.
- 7:14Laura, thank you so much for sharing that.
- 7:18I'm really reminding us that some of the biggest
- 7:21transformations in people's lives really aren't the ones
- 7:25that we can see or even necessarily measure.
- 7:28And I just want to say an absolutely massive
- 7:32congratulations. There is no doubt that what you
- 7:35have achieved is incredible and to be approaching a birthday
- 7:39that once felt impossible, I really am just so happy for you
- 7:44and your family. I really hope that you do just
- 7:47continue, as you said in your letter, to be kind to yourself.
- 7:54And if you're listening to this letter and perhaps you're in a
- 7:57similar position where you are questioning the body that you're
- 8:01in, maybe just try and take a moment to be kind to yourself as
- 8:06well. If you can think of anybody else
- 8:11who might like to listen to this letter, it would mean so much to
- 8:14me and Laura, if you could send them a link to it or tell them
- 8:18to come and listen to this letter today.
- 8:23And if you haven't already, if you could press the follow
- 8:27button before the episode finishes.
- 8:29I can't tell you enough how much it means to me and how much it
- 8:33really does do to help grow the podcast.
- 8:36And of course, if you've got a story of your own that you want
- 8:39to write as a letter, drop me an e-mail and I would really love
- 8:43to hear from you. Until next time, take care and
- 8:51try and be kind to yourself.
