Transcript
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to Drawing Closer, a Monday thought from Filled with His Love.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: As a young boy, I was asked to take part in a primary program, but I forgot to prepare.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: When my turn came, I stood up but could say absolutely nothing, not a word.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Everyone waited, but nothing came out of my mouth.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I felt like a runner who had stumbled coming out of the starting blocks and fallen flat on his face.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Afterwards, I told the primary president and my teacher that I would never, ever give another talk in church.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But that was one vow I obviously did not keep.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Eventually I began taking my turn, giving what we then called two and a half minute talks.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: In a way, these brief Monday thoughts are my return to the two and a half minute talk.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: When I was 14, and I still remember this, I heard President David O'May announce in general conference that Elder Sterling W.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Sill had come prepared with two talks, one fifteen minutes long and the other one one minute.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: President McKay said, quote, I believe, Brother Sill, we will take the one minute, unquote.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Elder Sill stepped to the podium and delivered his one-minute address.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: When he finished, President McKay said, I like a man who is true to his word.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I remember being in awe that Elder Sill could deliver such a powerful message in so little time.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Elder Sill was also the regular speaker on a radio program called Sunday Evening from Temple Square.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: A friend and I were paid a small amount to package printed copies of his talks before they were mailed to listeners who had requested them.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: So perhaps my desire to share a brief thought each Monday grew out of all three experiences giving two and a half minute talks in primary, hearing Elder Sill's one-minute masterpiece in general conference, and packaging his printed radio messages for others.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure exactly how this will unfold.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: At times I may be as brief as Elder Sill, just that one minute.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: At other times, I may stay closer to the old two and a half minute primary format.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: But my goal will always be the same, to be meaningful and brief.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I hope you like it.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I look forward to posting my next one for next Monday.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And until next time, let's draw a little closer to God and to one another.
