- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is.
- 0:15Tuesday. It is the third of the 10th,
- 0:182023. Hello.
- 0:22So good that you could press play, tap play, but dial play
- 0:26however you ended up here. Hello, welcome.
- 0:28So good to have your company. Thank you for inviting me into
- 0:31your day so that you and I can continue reading this book.
- 0:35This story of the church growing in the world.
- 0:39And this reading today is awesome.
- 0:42It shows that even in God's church, as it's growing and so
- 0:46powerfully with God's spirit at work, people are still people.
- 0:50And we just take a while to get our heads around change.
- 0:54And it's pretty uncomfortable for them as they see the church
- 0:57just growing so rapidly and including all these people that
- 1:01they they didn't really understand We're going to be
- 1:03part of this movement and they're trying to work out what
- 1:06this looks like and how they keep moving forward.
- 1:08And it's wonderful to hear the the slowness and the generosity
- 1:12as they grapple with these issues.
- 1:15So let's put down the busyness of the day that's already
- 1:19bouncing around in our heads. Take a deep breath and let us
- 1:26invite God's spirit to speak to us through this chapter is read
- 1:31it together in Acts Chapter 11. Soon the news reached the
- 1:47apostles and other believers in Judea that the Gentiles had
- 1:50received the word of God. But when Peter arrived back in
- 1:54Jerusalem, the Jewish believers criticized him.
- 1:57You entered the home of Gentiles and even ate with them, they
- 2:02said. Then Peter told them exactly
- 2:04what had happened. I was in the town of Joppa, he
- 2:08said. And while I was praying, I went
- 2:10into a trance and I saw a vision.
- 2:13Something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners
- 2:16from the sky, and it came right down to me.
- 2:20When I looked inside the sheet, I saw all sorts of tame and wild
- 2:24animals, reptiles and birds, and I heard a voice say, Get out,
- 2:29Peter. Kill and eat them.
- 2:31No, Lord, I replied. I've never eaten anything that
- 2:34our Jewish laws have declared impure or unclean.
- 2:38But the voice from heaven spoke again.
- 2:41Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.
- 2:45This happened three times before the sheet and all it contained
- 2:49was pulled back up to heaven. Just then, three men who had
- 2:54been sent from Cesaria arrived at the house where I was
- 2:56staying. The Holy Spirit told me to go
- 3:00with them and not to worry that they were Gentiles.
- 3:03These six brothers here accompanied me and we soon
- 3:07entered the home of the man who had sent for us.
- 3:10He told us how an Angel had appeared to him in his home and
- 3:14told him send messages to Joppa and summon a man named Simon
- 3:19Peter. He will tell you how you and
- 3:22everyone in your household can be saved.
- 3:25As I began to speak, Peter continued.
- 3:28The Holy Spirit fell on them just as he fell on us at the
- 3:32beginning. Then I thought of the Lord's
- 3:36words when he said John baptized with water.
- 3:40But you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:45And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift He gave
- 3:49us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand
- 3:53in God's way? When the others heard this, they
- 3:57stopped objecting and began praising God.
- 4:01They said we can see that God has also given the Gentiles the
- 4:05privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.
- 4:11Meanwhile, the believers who had been scattered during the
- 4:14persecution after Stevens death traveled as far as Phoenicia,
- 4:19Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria. They preached the word of God,
- 4:25but only to Jews. However, some of the believers
- 4:29who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Siren began preaching to the
- 4:32Gentiles about the Lord Jesus. The power of the Lord was with
- 4:36them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and
- 4:40turned to the Lord. When the church at Jerusalem
- 4:43heard what was happening, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
- 4:47When he arrived and saw this evidence of God's blessing, he
- 4:51was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay
- 4:55true to the Lord. Barnabas was a good man, full of
- 4:59the Holy Spirit and strong in faith, and many people were
- 5:03brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus
- 5:08to look for Saul. When he found him, he brought
- 5:11him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with
- 5:14the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people.
- 5:19It was an Antioch that the believers were first called
- 5:22Christians. During this time, some prophets
- 5:26traveled from Jerusalem to Antioch.
- 5:29One of them, named Agabus, stood up in one of their meetings and
- 5:34predicted by the Spirit that a great famine was coming upon the
- 5:38entire Roman world. This was fulfilled during the
- 5:42reign of Claudius. So the believers in Antioch
- 5:45decided to send relief to the brothers and sisters in Judea,
- 5:49everyone giving as much as they could.
- 5:52This they did entrusting their gifts to Barnabas and Saul to
- 5:56take to the elders of the church in Jerusalem.
- 6:09Thank you for being patient with us, Jesus.
- 6:12We are slow and stubborn humans, and so often our hearts have
- 6:17this inertia that takes so long to shift.
- 6:22We're like a great big ship heading in One Direction, and
- 6:26when you offer us a different opportunity, it takes time for
- 6:31us to slowly turn our hearts. Jesus, give us nimble spirits
- 6:38that we can be ever ready, ever able to respond to your calling
- 6:43and your prompting in the moment.
- 6:46That you would have us do so. Thank you that you are present
- 6:52with us, that you prompt us, that you guide us, that you
- 6:57nudge us, that your Holy Spirit is active, leading us each day.
- 7:04Ah, we just offer ourselves to you and pray that you use us in
- 7:08whatever way that you have planned.
- 7:11We are your servants and you are our God, and we submit wholly to
- 7:16you. And we pray all of this in your
- 7:19name, Jesus. Amen.
