- 0:00Speaker 1: In five Here we go, Here we Go. I did
- 0:09Speaker 1: mention to you that our friends from the Discam Foundation
- 0:11Speaker 1: were back again today. And what I love doing is
- 0:16Speaker 1: not only giving opportunities to people through my friend Jackie
- 0:20Speaker 1: from the Discam Foundation, but I also enjoy the fact
- 0:22Speaker 1: that opportunities have to be sustainable. They have to be
- 0:26Speaker 1: not just hey, well done, you are getting this much
- 0:29Speaker 1: support chers by. I like hearing what is happening with
- 0:33Speaker 1: those organizations, those people who have received so many donations
- 0:36Speaker 1: from the Discam Foundation thanks to you, because every swipe
- 0:40Speaker 1: can't you know that? And I figured for something different.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Let's catch up with one of these organizations today to
- 0:47Speaker 1: find out how things are going now. You may remember
- 0:49Speaker 1: almost two years ago on the flash drive with the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Discam Foundation, we were introduced to an extraordinary female led
- 0:55Speaker 1: NPO called cook Tastic and they explained about how they
- 0:59Speaker 1: are making differences and changes in the community, and we
- 1:03Speaker 1: had to know more. We had to do more. Hello boy,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Hello car So let's talk about Cooktastic, about what you do.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And this is why I called you in because you
- 1:11Speaker 1: do such great work in the community and I believe
- 1:14Speaker 1: that you are helping young people establish themselves in the
- 1:17Speaker 1: culinary industries.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That correct, That is correct.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So what Koctastic does is that we train young people
- 1:22Speaker 3: for employment Sokotastic Hub the skills development program.
- 1:26Speaker 2: We're not just offering skills.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Were offering quality accredited and youf Level three culinary training.
- 1:33Speaker 3: And we don't just do that. We first kind of
- 1:36Speaker 3: start with what we call work readiness training because we're
- 1:39Speaker 3: working with young people that are coming from communities that
- 1:42Speaker 3: are affected by social ills. So what we do is
- 1:45Speaker 3: that we get them into the program. We start with
- 1:47Speaker 3: their personal development. We work with them in terms of
- 1:49Speaker 3: their leadership skills, we work with them in terms of
- 1:52Speaker 3: their work ethic.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And then we kind of polish these.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Diamonds and ensure that, you know, they're kind of well
- 1:57Speaker 3: polished before they can get into the inn.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You know, you remind me of a friend of mine
- 2:01Speaker 1: who has a very similar feeling, and her name is Jackie.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Hello Jackie, what type of love do you want to
- 2:07Speaker 1: share with them we today, Jackie, I'd love to know.
- 2:09Speaker 4: So the Diskim Foundation would like to give you one
- 2:12Speaker 4: hundred and twenty thousand rare.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that is the moment almost two years ago with
- 2:21Speaker 1: Cooktastic and the thing is great. One hundred and twenty thousand, Raan,
- 2:24Speaker 1: It's huge from the Discam Foundation. But let's find out
- 2:27Speaker 1: how that made the difference that they needed. Let's find
- 2:30Speaker 1: it from Cooktastic themselves.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Hello, Kayley, Hello Carl, how are you today?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Fantastic? Remember that moment with him, Boye? How beautiful was that?
- 2:39Speaker 5: It was very emotional. I still get goosebumps to this
- 2:42Speaker 5: day when I think about it.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Now you're a head lecturer at Cooktastic and you can
- 2:46Speaker 1: tangibly see the difference that a contribution like the Discom
- 2:48Speaker 1: Foundation's contribution can make within the walls of Cooktastic. So
- 2:53Speaker 1: how have things been going since that donation and also
- 2:57Speaker 1: since that bit of pr so to speak, to make
- 2:59Speaker 1: sure that your organization continues to do the great work.
- 3:02Speaker 1: How are you guys doing?
- 3:04Speaker 4: Ok?
- 3:04Speaker 5: Are We're doing great? We go from strength to strengths.
- 3:07Speaker 5: And since we receive that donation from the disc And Foundation,
- 3:12Speaker 5: we put majority of it into uniforms for the student
- 3:15Speaker 5: love it and this creates a sense of belonging and
- 3:18Speaker 5: the students start to become a family because they can
- 3:21Speaker 5: identify themselves in the uniform with their peers. And this
- 3:26Speaker 5: uniform also enables the students to look professional and look
- 3:29Speaker 5: the part when they go for in service training, so
- 3:33Speaker 5: that is a huge, huge part of this industry is
- 3:35Speaker 5: also looking professional, So we start right from the beginning
- 3:39Speaker 5: making sure that their uniform is the first thing they have.
- 3:42Speaker 5: They become part of a family, because some of them
- 3:44Speaker 5: come from communities that are a little bit broken, so
- 3:47Speaker 5: this feels like their first family for some of them,
- 3:50Speaker 5: so that is very important for us. And then some
- 3:54Speaker 5: of the donation also went into sourcing local ingredients for
- 3:58Speaker 5: our practical cooking.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Legs, the Patrol cooking Yes, so Kayleie, I know for
- 4:05Speaker 1: a fact that that made a massive difference, and it's
- 4:08Speaker 1: beautiful so that you can have that ability to to
- 4:11Speaker 1: grab something like that and actually make that donation spread
- 4:14Speaker 1: across the entire organization, which I know is very healthy
- 4:17Speaker 1: at the moment. But of course, the true test of
- 4:20Speaker 1: an organization's health in terms of what they want to
- 4:22Speaker 1: do is hearing some of the stories that have really
- 4:27Speaker 1: been success stories. And that's why today yaish, hello.
- 4:33Speaker 2: How's it going called Leca.
- 4:34Speaker 1: You are a former Cooktastic student, so you would know
- 4:38Speaker 1: that when Katie says what she says, it's really happening
- 4:41Speaker 1: inside the walls of cook Tastic. Tell me how has
- 4:44Speaker 1: that organization changed your life?
- 4:45Speaker 6: Friend, I must say it's changed my life completely. I've
- 4:51Speaker 6: met people would have thought would never have met. I've
- 4:55Speaker 6: living a completely different life now. It's really helped me
- 4:58Speaker 6: as a person and community as all.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So tell me where are you from originally before you
- 5:05Speaker 1: got a chance of Cooktastic, where were you sitting in
- 5:07Speaker 1: your life?
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'd like to know a bit more about that story.
- 5:12Speaker 6: I'm from Alsie Schimmer came Toime, yeah, and very stricken
- 5:17Speaker 6: by poverty. And you know, you see all of these
- 5:20Speaker 6: things on a daily basis. And I mean I just
- 5:22Speaker 6: finished high school, coming out donturally with the plan, and
- 5:27Speaker 6: I mean my mother actually forced me to go to Cooktastic.
- 5:30Speaker 6: I wasn't to find the idea because I know chefs
- 5:33Speaker 6: work hard. Yeah, So so then I went forward, went
- 5:36Speaker 6: for interview, and I mean from there I just went
- 5:40Speaker 6: from strength to strength.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I can hear that now.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Only talk about strength to strength. One true testament of
- 5:46Speaker 1: an organization like cook Tastic is if at the moment
- 5:49Speaker 1: you have a job in let's just say the field
- 5:52Speaker 1: that you trained in, so yaish, do you have a
- 5:56Speaker 1: job in the field that you trained in.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Yes, I'm actually sue chef acting you very stepoint. What's
- 6:03Speaker 6: it called Figo Cope collation.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Dude, How incredible is that you're a Sioux chef Alsie's
- 6:12Speaker 1: high school cook tastic Sux chef at Figo inc Point,
- 6:15Speaker 1: one of the hottest up and coming restaurants.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Look at you go, my friend.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Congratulations and you know, I know we just met, but
- 6:22Speaker 1: I'm very proud of you for taking an opportunity, those
- 6:25Speaker 1: resources and making it work so beautifully for yourself. And
- 6:28Speaker 1: do you still have big ambitions going forward?
- 6:31Speaker 6: Yes? Yes, Honestly speaking, I see myself being the best
- 6:34Speaker 6: ship in the wall.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yes, yes, manir I love that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: No, no, no, yeahsh I feel you on that one
- 6:42Speaker 1: hundred percent. And I can see where this is going.
- 6:45Speaker 1: There's a little guide called Michelon and I'm just saying,
- 6:49Speaker 1: do it, brother, do what ya I know?
- 6:53Speaker 2: I no, no, I'm sorry. I'm a dreamer.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I go straight to the top of the dreams. I
- 6:57Speaker 1: go straight to the jagular Ahi. Yeah, each congratulations and
- 7:02Speaker 1: I'm glad. Let's just say it's just a quick one
- 7:04Speaker 1: for any student who is wondering what happens next them
- 7:09Speaker 1: going to cook Tastic. What do you want to say
- 7:11Speaker 1: to the students, those parents that are thinking, like where
- 7:14Speaker 1: do I send my kid died? I don't have the
- 7:15Speaker 1: money of the means, Uh, speak to them for a
- 7:18Speaker 1: second and tell them why Cooktastic is a great place
- 7:20Speaker 1: to go.
- 7:22Speaker 6: So firstly, Cotastics are family. I mean, I've made some
- 7:25Speaker 6: of my best friends Accurtastic. They're all doing while in
- 7:29Speaker 6: the field as well of shipping, And I mean it's
- 7:33Speaker 6: my best decision was going to Koktastic. That made me
- 7:36Speaker 6: feel welcome. They gave me a purpose I could say,
- 7:38Speaker 6: and a passion, made people along the way to learn
- 7:42Speaker 6: so many skills, not only within cooking, within life as well.
- 7:46Speaker 6: So I mean basically I could tell Apear and just
- 7:49Speaker 6: do it. Send your child cry fool, but he is
- 7:53Speaker 6: just do it.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Love it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you very much for being a great ambassador
- 7:56Speaker 1: for cook Tastic And now for the Cove Collection's Hottest
- 7:59Speaker 1: new restaurant, Old Figo. You know, the nice thing about
- 8:02Speaker 1: talking to Sue Chefs live on radio on KF ninety
- 8:04Speaker 1: four point five is that you can't say no to
- 8:06Speaker 1: me when I say Coppola Table. You understand what I'm saying, like,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you can't say no, right.
- 8:13Speaker 2: We'll see what are you? Thank you very much?
- 8:15Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 8:15Speaker 2: Am I going to die? Plan? No, I'm calling you ish,
- 8:18Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
- 8:18Speaker 6: What?
- 8:20Speaker 2: No, Mina, I'm sorry, I'm not going to click on
- 8:22Speaker 2: a dayton. How many people I'm going to call it directly?
- 8:24Speaker 2: They say, hello, I'm in your area? Why that?
- 8:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Congratulations my friends.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Seriously, it's beautiful and it just shows you how powerful
- 8:32Speaker 1: the DISCOM Foundation is and the power is shared thanks
- 8:36Speaker 1: to people like you.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Jackie.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Hello, Carl, you're not going to say go without me?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Right?
- 8:43Speaker 6: No?
- 8:43Speaker 2: No, that's I'm trying to get the table for us. Jackie.
- 8:47Speaker 1: This is our because we haven't had our team building yet,
- 8:50Speaker 1: so like this is she's gonna hook us up at Figo.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You're coming down to Kton, let's do this thing.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Thoughts amazing. So that is so beautiful and I just
- 9:01Speaker 4: love listening to it, and I'm fantastic. Has been one
- 9:04Speaker 4: of my most passionate initiatives that we've gotten involved in.
- 9:11Speaker 4: And I must tell you that one hundred and twenty
- 9:13Speaker 4: thousand we reviewed and renewed it after a year. That
- 9:16Speaker 4: one hundred and twenty thousand into two hundred and forty thousands.
- 9:19Speaker 2: You didn't tell me that.
- 9:22Speaker 4: What I know right, Yes, we're now giving them ten
- 9:25Speaker 4: thousand random months in order to enable them to have
- 9:31Speaker 4: more of these incredible people become successful. And a very
- 9:35Speaker 4: beautiful story that I just wanted to share with you
- 9:38Speaker 4: was when we onboarded them as beneficiaries. With the young
- 9:41Speaker 4: lady working at the Western. She did her internship and
- 9:45Speaker 4: she left, so she was so passionate she asked the
- 9:47Speaker 4: executive checky she could continued to go back just to
- 9:50Speaker 4: learn until she found a job because they didn't hesitation. Yeah,
- 9:54Speaker 4: And as it so happened that on the day that
- 9:56Speaker 4: we went through It's the Best Western, and we after
- 10:00Speaker 4: the video of the other chat from Cooptastic that was
- 10:03Speaker 4: working on the executive floor, she was there and chief
- 10:06Speaker 4: told that she had a permanent tradition with them, and
- 10:09Speaker 4: she goes into chairs in front of the camera. We
- 10:11Speaker 4: all cry. I still get emotional when I see it.
- 10:14Speaker 4: She is now she has left and gone to Switzerland
- 10:18Speaker 4: to a cooking school. She was that good and she
- 10:21Speaker 4: was offered that opportunity. So she's now sadly left our borders,
- 10:24Speaker 4: but hopefully will come back from Switzerland from amazing tuitional
- 10:29Speaker 4: or cooking tuitional school, the next level culinary.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I'm stunning. I'm stunned by that because next, right, your next, next,
- 10:43Speaker 1: that's going to be great. I did not know that
- 10:45Speaker 1: you're renewed that that contribution. Wow, I like how you
- 10:48Speaker 1: hide things from me. Is that that we are in
- 10:50Speaker 1: our relationship now great.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Well we haven't seen.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Okay, great, all right, we're going to Figo. Your issus
- 10:58Speaker 1: is going to hook us up at Jackie. Honestly, it's
- 11:00Speaker 1: nice to reflect back on the work that's been done.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And as I mentioned in the beginning of this conversation,
- 11:04Speaker 1: it is the sustainability that's more important to me than
- 11:07Speaker 1: anything else. And to know that you've continued that contribution,
- 11:10Speaker 1: it means it means about the lasting, the lasting efforts
- 11:14Speaker 1: that the Discom Foundation is doing, and in a way,
- 11:16Speaker 1: the story about the chef in Switzerland, it means that
- 11:19Speaker 1: we all got a chance to contribute because we are
- 11:21Speaker 1: better Rewards program members and every swipe does indeed count.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It counts towards putting people in positions where they can
- 11:29Speaker 1: excel and actually put South Africa as a.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Whole on the map.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Globally, we get to be a community that helps that
- 11:35Speaker 1: forward and I think that is the true power of
- 11:38Speaker 1: the Discom Foundation and this platform. So thank you so
- 11:42Speaker 1: much for igniting this on this show and for everybody
- 11:46Speaker 1: it just means so much.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Thank you, Carlin. It is it's a beautiful initiative and
- 11:52Speaker 4: we are We're making huge differences and you're making sure
- 11:54Speaker 4: everybody hears about them.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So thank you anytime, Jackie.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I can't wait for our next chat and our tea
- 12:00Speaker 1: building at Figo thanks to the aish like.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Love it you enjoy. That's Jackie and the Discam Foundation.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And do you remember you can sign up for the

- 12:17Speaker 1: incredible work of the Discom Foundation. That's you, by the way,
