Latest / Seth Grossman – Liberty and Prosperity / Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year Holiday.
Transcript
- 0:00- I'm Seth Grossman speaking for Liberty and Prosperity.
- 0:04- I'm recording this message because this weekend,
- 0:07- starting on sundown on Friday, September 11,
- 0:10- is the two day Jewish holiday of Rosh
- 0:13- Hashanah,
- 0:14- the Jewish New Year.
- 0:16- I'm Jewish,
- 0:18- so I won't be at the Liberty and
- 0:20- Prosperity breakfast or on the radio this weekend.
- 0:23- I'll instead be in synagogue with my family.
- 0:27- The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah is described
- 0:30- in the books of Leviticus and Numbers in
- 0:33- the Old Testament of the Bible.
- 0:36- However, it's not called Rosh Hashanah, which means
- 0:39- New Year there.
- 0:41- It's instead described as Yom Teruah,
- 0:44- the day for the sounding of the shofar.
- 0:47- When the temple stood in Jerusalem, it was
- 0:49- a day when a ram's horn was sounded,
- 0:52- calling on all Jews to assemble around the
- 0:54- temple.
- 0:56- There, they gave animals to the priest to
- 0:59- be slaughtered and sacrificed at the temple.
- 1:02- They also sang Psalms and praised God.
- 1:06- Rosh Hashanah together with Yom Kippur,
- 1:08- the day of atonement that comes ten days
- 1:11- later,
- 1:12- were also times when Jews confessed their sins
- 1:15- and prayed to God for forgiveness.
- 1:18- Of course, God can only forgive sins we
- 1:20- commit to God.
- 1:22- He can forgive sins we commit to other
- 1:24- people or to ourselves.
- 1:26- So the Jewish high holidays of Rosh Hashanah
- 1:29- and Yom Kippur are times of reflection.
- 1:33- It is a time for Jews to think
- 1:34- of how we hurt others during the past
- 1:36- year.
- 1:37- We ask them for forgiveness
- 1:39- and think of ways to do better next
- 1:41- year.
- 1:42- We also think of mistakes we made that
- 1:44- hurt ourselves.
- 1:46- We think of how we can do better
- 1:47- in the year ahead.
- 1:49- That's why Jews don't say happy new year
- 1:51- for Rosh Hashanah.
- 1:52- We instead say,
- 1:55- which is short for saying, may you be
- 1:57- written for a good year.
- 1:59- The Old Testament books of Exodus and Deuteronomy
- 2:03- call Jews the chosen people,
- 2:06- but Jews were not chosen to be superior
- 2:08- to anyone
- 2:09- or to rule over anyone.
- 2:12- Jews were chosen to live by a set
- 2:13- of 613
- 2:15- laws and rules that are written in the
- 2:17- first five books of the Old Testament of
- 2:19- the Bible.
- 2:20- They are called the Torah or Torah.
- 2:23- At Mount Sinai,
- 2:25- the freed Hebrew slaves made a covenant or
- 2:28- contract with God.
- 2:30- According to that contract,
- 2:32- Jews agreed to live by God's laws, and
- 2:34- God agreed to let Jews live safe and
- 2:37- comfortable lives in a promised land flowing with
- 2:40- milk and honey.
- 2:41- Last year, I wrote a history book called
- 2:44- 1676
- 2:45- project,
- 2:46- how New Jersey shaped America.
- 2:48- In it, I explained how New Jersey was
- 2:51- established in 1676
- 2:53- in much the same way.
- 2:56- Quakers who were persecuted in England
- 2:58- came to Salem and Burlington here in South
- 3:01- Jersey
- 3:02- to create their own commonwealth.
- 3:04- It was also based on the rules and
- 3:06- values set forth in the bible.
- 3:09- The most fundamental law
- 3:11- was the Jewish and Christian golden rule.
- 3:15- Do unto others as you would have others
- 3:17- do unto you.
- 3:18- Jews and Israel
- 3:20- thrived when they kept their covenant and followed
- 3:23- those laws.
- 3:24- They suffered when they did not.
- 3:27- The same can be said about Christians in
- 3:29- America.
- 3:31- There's an old Jewish saying that goes, what
- 3:33- happens to the world,
- 3:35- happens to the Jews first.
- 3:38- Jews are going through very difficult times right
- 3:42- now. We're paying the price for committing plenty
- 3:44- of sins.
- 3:46- There are 8,000,000,000 people in the world.
- 3:49- There are two and a half billion Christians,
- 3:52- 2,000,000,000 Muslims, and 1,000,000,000 Hindus.
- 3:55- There are only 15,000,000
- 3:57- Jews. That's 0.2
- 4:00- of the world population.
- 4:03- About 7,000,000 Jews live in Israel, and 6,000,000
- 4:06- live in America.
- 4:08- However, Jews are rapidly disappearing in America.
- 4:12- You can see that here in Atlantic City.
- 4:14- When I grew up here in the nineteen
- 4:16- sixties,
- 4:17- we had about 11 thriving synagogues.
- 4:21- We had Bethel, Beth Israel, and Beth Jacob
- 4:23- in the Inlet.
- 4:25- We had and
- 4:27- a Sephardic synagogue for Jews from Syria and
- 4:29- Lebanon
- 4:30- on Pacific Avenue in Midtown.
- 4:33- We had the Chelsea synagogue in Chelsea, Beth
- 4:35- Judah in Ventnor,
- 4:37- and three synagogues in Margate.
- 4:40- All those synagogues had Hebrew schools and Sunday
- 4:43- schools with lots of kids.
- 4:46- Now you only have a handful of synagogues,
- 4:49- and there are hardly any kids in Hebrew
- 4:51- schools.
- 4:52- Most members are aging boomers like me. Most
- 4:56- struggle to get a traditional minion of 10
- 4:58- men at most services,
- 5:00- and most have trouble getting a quorum of
- 5:02- 10 people
- 5:03- even when women are counted.
- 5:05- This is all a direct result of not
- 5:08- following many important bible commandments,
- 5:11- starting with commandment number one,
- 5:13- get married and have children.
- 5:16- And, of course, there's the vital commandment that
- 5:19- parents diligently teach their children.
- 5:23- Sadly, most churches in the area are having
- 5:25- the same problems.
- 5:27- That is why America is also in decline.
- 5:31- However, the situation is not hopeless.
- 5:34- There's still time to teach ourselves the Jewish
- 5:37- and Christian values that our parents and grandparents
- 5:40- live by.
- 5:41- There's still time to understand that these values
- 5:44- are based on eternal truth
- 5:46- that made lives better for millions of people
- 5:49- for thousands of years.
- 5:51- The 10 commandments,
- 5:53- love your neighbor as yourself,
- 5:55- do unto others as you would have them
- 5:57- do unto you.
- 5:59- These values led to the American idea that
- 6:01- we're all created equal and all endowed by
- 6:04- our creator with certain unalienable rights, and that
- 6:07- among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit
- 6:10- of happiness.
- 6:12- These values brought three hundred years of liberty
- 6:14- and prosperity to America
- 6:16- starting in 1676.
- 6:19- It's not too late to bring this back,
- 6:21- but we are running out of time.
- 6:23- We, boomers, need to use the years we
- 6:25- have left to start teaching this to our
- 6:28- children and grandchildren.
