- 0:31[SPEAKER_03]: What's up everybody and welcome to another episode of Scouting, the fans is fourth of July weekend.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_03]: I hope you guys are having a great weekend.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: So far, fire up the meats on the grill, have some laid-back chill time with the boys and the family.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_03]: I'm joined by my co-host Coach today.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: Hey look, funny that you say it should be a laid-back in chill time.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: Last week we were talking about what we're going to do this week, thinking about
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: It being a slow time of year trying to find stuff to talk about and Chris Greer comes through with with some big stuff and you know, we got a real fun guest on here today to talk about some of that stuff.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, we'd ring them in and tell us who we got.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we're joined by Ty done of golongtd.com.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_03]: Ty has been on the podcast before and he's written extensively about the dolphins evolving mindset.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_03]: He's done some star player profiles, locker room dynamics of the Miami dolphins as well.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_03]: Ty, welcome back to the show.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: Great to be here, fellas.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks so much for having me.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I, I, I feel like that every time we catch up, man, where we're talking about a player, I wrote about and then that player ends up like going to another team or his dolphin's career.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so I hope, I hope things go well for the dolphins after this conversation.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: I promise I'm not the kids of death.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like the actual real kiss of death in the real jinx is actually Brett Coleman, not you.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like, all right, Coleman has some stuff where it's just a complete opposite of what happens.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_03]: You're not there.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_03]: You're not at that level, just yet.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's good to know.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's good to know.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: But no, it's always great here in front of me.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I appreciate you subscribe and reading.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's, uh, hey, the pleasure is all here.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you back when you were at police report back in twenty twenty the whole.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_03]: Make a Fitzpatrick drama and block Brian floors.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_03]: I mean coach and I were kind of floored that the dolphin straighted.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_03]: Jalen Ramsey and think I'm back.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_03]: Make a Fitzpatrick in that trade and then we come to find out, you know.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah, John who is going as well.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_03]: So then initially right after all that it made sense, but your profile of Fitzpatrick in twenty twenty captured his upbringing, growing up in a flooded home, sleeping in coats to stay warm, and how those hardships shaped his drive for a structure, you really saw how his tough background translated to leadership.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_03]: but it seems as if the sour relationship with Brian Flores put off a lot of dolphins fans initially and now some people think that he's a quote unquote quiet quitter and is not what the dolphin should be looking for in terms of culture and leadership.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, boy, now you're bringing me back.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_01]: That was five years ago, I guess, when I caught up with Mika Fitzpatrick at Link.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know, from what I remember, son of a diesel mechanic, you're right.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he learned hard work at a really young age from his dad.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: He went through hell as you mentioned.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Nick Sabin.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: I talked to Nick Sabin for that story.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of refers to make it if it's Patrick as like one of his own sons.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like you can tell he loves this kid.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Raised him up as a player as a person believed that he could go down as one of the greatest safeties in the sport.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Nick Sabin is just kind of throwing around praise like that Willie Nilly.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: So the point being like, yeah, make it if it's Patrick.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think does embrace
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: hard work and he was excited from what I remember in our conversation way back then he was excited for Brian Flores like he saw a Brian Flores was able to do as a defensive coach with New England wanted to give this a chance but could tell very early on and he wasn't being utilized the right way he wanted him
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: kind of near the line of scrimmage in the muck was a Patrick Chungus kind of used in that role with the Patriots and Fitzpatrick kind of knew his skill set his worth his ability and knew it wasn't being used correctly.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that season ended really poorly for Miami.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not telling your fans anything.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: They don't remember, although maybe they blocked out those forty fifty point losses.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: didn't think it's smoke by Lamar on the Ravens early that season.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: Very first week.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_03]: Fifteen nine at ten and he actually spoke about it in your article that after that game he demanded to be traded because he was communicating with guys who were here three four days in not knowing what to do and he was being used as a hybrid lineback or utilizing you know hand fighting drills
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: This and that it not being used as coverage, he wasn't able to use his intellect and his athleticism and he wasn't being used properly in his defense.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: Now, I wrote an article about Minka right after the trade when the dolphins drafted Javon Holland.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_03]: Javon Holland was what Minka Fitzpatrick was supposed to be in that Bryan Flores defense.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_03]: However, there was not that drama.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_03]: Now that Holland has left Miami, there was a lot of behind the scenes drama going on last season coach.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_03]: We saw that he was missing communications, missing plays, a lot of fans, and even some of our own analysts returning back at the clock on Holland saying, what is going on, did he ultimately forget to play safety?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think we look back at some of the coverage laps as we had some of the, you know, what you felt were mistakes from Javan Holland.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I think that as you saw Holland, his arc with the dolphins, right, started out really well.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Those first two seasons, you really thought that we had a pro ball type safety in Javan Holland.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, we go to the Vick Fangerio stuff and he clearly didn't like how he was being
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: used by Vic Fangeo and it felt like that never really recovered and that the that secondary room is a whole right we've seen the entire secondary room.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: It turned into an entire unit in an entire new unit in the last two years.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that's not by accident right I think that the evolution of John Holland to you know from a player that was really promising to one that the dolphins let walk for nothing right I think that.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: had a lot to do with those changes and coordinators, the way that those players were asked to be used.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you know, Kyle, let me ask you this, you know, with with Mink of Fitzpatrick coming back to Miami.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think the organization, you know, going from, you know, specifically Brian Flores to Anthony Weaver, do you think they're better equipped to let Minka be himself and do those things that you talked about as far as, you know, the ways that he wants to be used or is there still a risk of history repeating itself?
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think it's a great fit.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: You can probably break down the access to knows a hell of a lot better than me in terms of how he'll be utilized on a play to play basis.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: But just speaking to the leader, the person I was around those Pittsburgh Stealer teams for handful of stories, bleach report days to the goal long days.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: And this is somebody you want in your locker room.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: versus the Jalen Ramsey or it doesn't sound like Jalen Ramsey and Mike McDaniely, we're even speaking, right?
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like it got bad fast.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: I was talking to a general manager a couple of weeks ago, who I should say former general manager with intimate knowledge when it comes to Jalen Ramsey.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, man, clearly nobody wants this guy.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: Miami's trying to give him away.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody wants him.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: So to get a make-up of its Patrick, I know you had to give up a tight end off of a career season two, right?
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's part of this whole equation.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: But to get a make up it's Patrick who, even if he was having a down year last season, man, he's twenty eight years old.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: He came in a league so young.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: He's made a hell of a lot of place throughout his career.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I just feel like there will be a positive locker room influence.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see this as a negative.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the dolphins, big picture clearly need to get tougher in December.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: And need to be able to step into the ring with the heavy weights in the AFC.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're going to step into the ring, you need guys with some pelts on the wall.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: Make if it's Patrick has those pelts.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's made big plays and big moments.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's been around hard coaching.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: He accepts hard coaching.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that he's going to be, I don't know how he'll be utilized.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how that all plays out with Anthony Weaver.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I think for the dolphins that make big Daniel Chris career, love him, right?
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it all comes full circle for Chris career.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: He, you know, he loved make it with Patrick once upon a time.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: They need more guys like that in that room.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Just just football eat eat it, sleep it, breathe it, you know, where do we just tell me where to jump at how high they need those players?
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because let's face the Jordan Brooks at the quiet part out loud when they got thumped by the Green Bay Packers.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: It was a soft football team.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: You won't hear a more derogatory term in the sport than soft.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: And for one of your own players to call your team soft, you've got to do something, right?
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: And they don't have the money to do a lot of stuff.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: With how much money they have tied up into Tua, Tyree Kill, Jaylin Wattel, so you've got to draft for the trenches, like they had the last two years.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: And you've got to make a bold move like this for making this patch.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, from your perspective,
- 9:57[SPEAKER_03]: Is that Mink of Fitzpatrick move the most impactful off season move or do you think there's a different mindset change that's driving the narrative forward?
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: Man, that's a good question.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: I, because I don't, I can't put Mink of Fitzpatrick up the pedestal as franchise savior because he, like he wasn't himself in twenty twenty four.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: He was a lot better in twenty two and twenty three.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: I do think a lot of they had to do with Pittsburgh's defense.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: They just completely fell apart by the end of the season.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I think to me, it's more gradual.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's not necessarily one player that's drafted, one player that they traded for, one player that they signed.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: They've only been drafted offensive in defense of Lyman in the first two rounds last two years.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not an accident.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think they knew that they had to be able to toggle between play styles.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of what the Buffalo Bills did here in Western New York.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm thinking back to when they lost the Cincinnati Bengals and the, was it, two thousand and twenty two divisional playoff round.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: The bills were dying for one of these home playoff games.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: They get it at home against the Bengals.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: And what happened?
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: They looked like a dome football team.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: Isaiah McKenzie, we did a show together at my site for a while.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of said the quiet part out loud himself.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: He said, look, our team was kind of built for a dome.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: And if we got the Bengals inside of a dome, we would have blew him out of the water.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: A long time defensive starter on that that bill's team.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, look, we weren't, we weren't built for the snow and the blizzardy conditions of Western New York, which is crazy.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: You would think,
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: The bills would do everything in their power to cultivate a roster that just begs for that environment.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: And after that game, Brandon being specifically realized, okay, we got to get back to the trenches.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: We have to value resources on the offensive and defensive lines and try to get a running game going, Sean McDermott fed into that as well.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: He wanted more balance.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: And look, there's still
- 12:10[SPEAKER_03]: There we go, he's back.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: Can you hear me now?
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's back.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_03]: We're getting too excited.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: I promise I'm getting to a point here in very quickly two seasons.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: The bills built in offense that's capable of winning.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then it conditions, they ran the ball about as well as any team in the AFC last season.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: Alan's part of that James Cook, Ray Davis, an offensive line that can push people around.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: And it really was a big picture kind of ethos philosophy from up above.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I think in two years, you can flip it.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: If you're the Miami Dolphins, yeah, you're going to win with speed and they've been leaning into that speed.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like you have to all of a sudden
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: turn into the nineteen seventies bob greasy hand of the ball up to Larry Zacca Miami Dolphins, but clearly in December, you got to be able to run the ball.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to be able to win a different type of game.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if they're able to do it right like we're not going to know if this all pays off until then, but I do like the fact that they've been drafting players on both lines defensive especially.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love Grant that their scouts really believe he was better than Mason Graham even on that Michigan defensive line.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's not sexy.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's not fun to talk.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: What's fun to talk about is Mike McDaniel just inventing plays on the fly and drop in seventy points on the Denver Broncos, but they they learned very quickly.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to be able to win a different type of football game.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if they'll be able to we'll see, but they're definitely trying and I think it is a lot of these incremental kind of changes over the course of two years that I think that can get them there.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you were, you said about being able to run the ball late in the season and kind of going to a tweet that you had a few days ago in response to where he most certain what he said about the way the Dolphins treat pro bulls.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: You said, you know, the Dolphins are rolling with Devon HN while topping, tapping the brakes on most of it.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: And that was an obvious correct decision.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: And you said, Jalen Wright could also be dynamite, right?
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: What do you see in Jalen Wright?
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love Jalen Wright.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: had a chance to speak to him, ahead of that draft.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: And this is somebody who went through the grime himself.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: You, right, you mentioned the makeup of its Patrick backstory.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Jalen Wright and his father were basically homeless for a couple years.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: He's just sleeping on the floor of a friend's house.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he went through it in his personal life.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: But as a player, I mean, he could run with power, like he's the fastest running back in that draft, but he could run with some power and he can fly.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: So you can, you can just imagine how he, he's utilized in the soft ends with an increased role, but yeah, I mean, the, the were he mostured tweet.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: It just cracked me.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: I was actually driving, I don't know where we were going with the kids.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it was on ESPN radio.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: They mentioned the tweet.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: I almost didn't believe it at first, like,
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: What?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like Miami did the absolute right thing objectively by every measure where a running back has a thousand yards and eighteen touchdowns, but it's going to be thirty three years old.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: You sign him to exactly the deal.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: You sign him to do one year, four million.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see if you can do it again.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: He couldn't in a marginal role.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: He averaged three point three yards of carry.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: The Miami Dolphins were proven correct to lowball him.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: So for him to be winding and complaining like, I wasn't surprised necessarily, you know, just from personal experience where this is somebody I knew really well, or he most are.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know, back to the San Francisco forty-nine or stays when he tore up the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: We went out to dinner out in San Francisco ahead of the Super Bowl.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: unbelievable back story himself.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he accidentally shot himself in the toe.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: Never knew his father.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: All kinds of crazy stuff before he even gets cut by six teams and survive.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: So he is an inspirational football story.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: But then, you know, I saw him in Miami when I was due to two parter on two a tongue of Iola in twenty twenty two.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: had a great chat about two of this offense is taking the NFL by storm at that time.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're like eight and three.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: They're getting ready to play San Francisco and he just was honest and said, yeah, you know, we asked them about this offense versus San Francisco one.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: He said, yeah, we went more talent here.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: We've got a quarterback who can actually sling it.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: What happened?
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: As you guys may remember, forty-nine of fans lost their minds.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: They went after her he most hurt and this always breaks my heart guys when a player is honest in an interview on a taper quarter by the way and They feel the need to backtrack and say they were taking out a context and say oh he left out the part about me praising Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: That never happened.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: He never praised Jimmy Garoppolo once
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: So he blast me on Twitter, he goes on San Francisco radio and is doing damage control and I didn't say, well, I didn't want to declare war, then.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: And the dolphins have been so good to me.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: I just told, you know, their PR step look here's what he said, I'm not going to make a big stink about this, but.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you can you can believe me or him, but I do have it out of a quarter.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, it's not that salacious.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: He said it's quarterback and actually sling it, not exactly sharing nuclear codes.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: But anyways, when I wrote the column this week and go along, I had to kind of tie that tweet to his tweet this week and say, you know what, sometimes, or he most heard of gets a little emotional and doesn't know what he's talking about on Twitter.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there was another story below something else you wrote about Raheem Monster, which kind of caught my eye for a guy who has that veteran locker room presence.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_03]: from the things that he's pointing out, you know, calling out mistakes to other players in front of other coaches.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_03]: That can also rub people the wrong way in the locker room to the coaches and even the organization.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_03]: Paddle like what Jalen Ramsey was doing.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_03]: Do you feel like that?
- 18:20[SPEAKER_03]: potentially with the departures of Ramsey of John Oostmith was asking for more money and Raheem Monster is addition by subtraction for what the dolphins want to build.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, you set it exactly as I intended to write it that is absolutely addition by subtraction in my opinion.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: player on that Miami offense who vividly remembers Rahim Oster going out of his way to shout out when one is running back teammates and made a mistake if he noticed their position coach wasn't watching.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's not being a good teammate.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_01]: And guys, guys, they don't forget stuff like that.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's a small thing that can metastasize and to a big thing.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think you want those guys in your locker room.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: The Jalen Ramsey stories are numerous.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Jacksonville obviously was willing to put up with it for a while because he was one of the best cornerbacks in football with the Rams.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: He was still one of the best corners in the league.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: If you get a guy like, I mean, he's, let's face it to the cornerback position, especially you're probably going to have some some stuff to you.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you're going to be rugged.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: From a personality standpoint, you better be because you're out in an island, every rule is against you.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: If you breathe on the receiver too too much, you're going to get flagged like I get it.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: Why some of these guys have a few screws loose, but at some point, you know, you only tolerate so much because of that talent starts to slip if they lose a little bit on on the on their speed.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: On their ability to change direction on their ability to like that year you're not going to put up with the stuff off the field so it was worth the gamble for Miami.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: I loved it when they acquired Jalen Ramsey.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: This was a team going for it clearly, but it was time to move on because I'm sure Chris Graham like McDanger.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: They can't come out and say it, but they're in a transition like they had they had the quarterback on the rookie deal.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: They did the right thing.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_01]: They spent like crazy.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: They were aggressive.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_01]: They tried to add pieces to win now with that quarterback on a rookie.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: Do they pay the quarterback?
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: And now it's kind of on to a tongue of ayola to lift up everybody else.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that that's the bet.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: It can go either direction with two of.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, like he's got to be the one that lifts up everybody else.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see what happens with Tyree Kill.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if the right deal came around, I
- 20:46[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't be shocked if they entertained and offer.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that they are kind of having it both ways and it's an okay place to live like they they're trying to win and they could win this year.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: They got they got a level tail on both sides of the ball.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: But they also do have to sort of read tool reload and change up that locker room chemistry in a positive way because these are two players that you know did the juice wasn't worth the squeeze for either one.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think your spot on as far as the, you know, the roster reset, whatever you want to call out there, they're, they're moving to the next phase of this roster building.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: I know I run a little bit of short on time with what you have here and I didn't want to let you leave without talking about tight-ends a little bit.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: You wrote a book back in, in the blood and gut.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: You also wrote an article back in
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: May of this year about Julian Hill and Julian Hill is very polarizing topic among dolphin fans.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, needs to improve on the field.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that anybody that's really heard his backstory and, you know, read your article, I think would really be rooting for this guy.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, he's got to get better on the field.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: But just wanted you to talk about your experience with Julian Hill a little bit.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: And how, you know, whether you feel he's got what it takes to develop into a starting caliber tight end.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, whatever.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea that he was as polar as he is until I wrote that three-part series in a lot of dolphin fans were like, oh, I don't want to hear about you.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: Look, this is somebody who has a life that is made for HBO, made for the movies.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: My jaw was dropping several times over when we sat down to really dig into his past.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he is quite literally out to save lives.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_01]: He wants to save the lives of kids today, down in South Florida,
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: Who in so many ways are living the life he did in favor North Carolina when he grew up.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: People can check out the series.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's at golongt.com with Julian Hill, but he was homeless for his entire childhood and his mother had some very severe drug issues in and out of rehab.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: Still trying to do what she could for her son on hustling.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, home to home to home, just a friend of a friend, somebody who'd let them sleep on a floor here, sleep on a floor there, literally sleeping with the cockroaches.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: One of their trailers there at one point was just shot up.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody survived.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: Thank God.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: Another story where somebody just went up to the the family's vehicle and just took a bat to it, just absolutely knocking out all the windows and eat.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: Tomorrow was not promised and that was even the worst of it.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's it was hard to listen to him, show me hard for people to read, but he saw some domestic violence up close.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, his his mother was was just brutalized and and some pretty awful ways different different different different different boy friends different people they were living with.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: Get out of that situation.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_01]: He's basically saved by.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: Appalachian and Shafer there in Fayetteville lives with them, gets his life back on track.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, you fast forward today and we spent some time at his house, the foundation down there in Miami, a children's home.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: And they're basically taking in kids who have been trafficked in Florida throughout the country.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: Some unbelievably sad stories that they shared.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I think Julian, at the end of last season, you kind of referenced it.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: He went through his ups and downs as a player once he kind of connected with these kids at his house and was able to see what they've been through kind of relate in a way that every guest speaker, every adult that comes through, that talked to these kids, cannot relate to these kids.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: He was able to, and he's developed some real friendships.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: Once he kind of did that, I think his life in general has kind of been turning around since then.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of getting back and touched with his purpose.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: in life in general.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: He wants to save lives.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's doing a day to day.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's building real relationships with a lot of these kids who have nobody, right?
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: No, no mom, no dad, no savior of any kind of many like I said, many of the traffic and have seen some things you can't even, you don't want to say a loud.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's really helped him in a huge way and I can only help you as a football player.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: I football is trivial when we're talking about this all, but I think he isn't a really good place to contribute.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_01]: I know it says goal to be the best block in tight end and football.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like not many tight ends have that as a goal.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like catching the ball is it would be gravy in this offense.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: They got a lot of their guys and catch the ball.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: He wants to be in the trenches and shove people around.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's what the Miami Dolphins could use in November December.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I read that three parts series and that was very heavy on the heart, very heavy on the shoulders and
- 25:40[SPEAKER_03]: I learned to give him some grace for some, you know, on the field mistakes that he would make.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, Chris Greer and Mike McDaniel talked about that.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_03]: Some of the on field mistakes that he made, they're correctable.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_03]: And his mistakes on the field weren't even the worst of it.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_03]: And last, last thing before you go, Ty, you're writing these threads.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_03]: You know, together with these stories of accountability, adverse adversity and agency, you know, from tool to make up from former dolphins in Raheem Mossard and David Long to now Julian Hill and even Zach Schieler, we didn't even get to mention him yet.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_03]: But what does this mosaic of players that the dolphins have collected and even including some of their draft picks like Jalen Ride, Zeke Bigger's and even Quinn ever was facing, you know, adversity,
- 26:30[SPEAKER_03]: at Texas last season, tell us about the culture that my miss trying to construct, and if they can find that identity this season.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: They have to become a mentally tough football team, right?
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's easier said than done.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've never said down with Chris Greer or Mike McDaniel, I would love to.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I always thought that Brandon being here Buffalo put it best when he was kind of at a transition point with the bills.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: and they let a lot of veterans go and they're gonna be leaning on some younger players.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: The metaphor he used is it's a true chemistry experiment.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like you're gonna need a little bit of this, a little bit of that.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like you don't want all choir boys.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want all boy scouts.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want everybody with an absolute clean, you know, never swore in their life.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: You know, absent rap sheet.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like you do need some dogs.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: You do need somebody with an edge to them.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yet you also do need those culture centers.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to show up at four a.m.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: for thirty a.m.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: to work out to watch film.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: You hope it's one of your best players because that's going to bring along other guys and say, Oh, look, if that guy's doing that, I better do the same thing.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's got to be a blend, right?
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: And it's got to be a mixture and I, maybe the dolphins are getting there.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_01]: Something's missing.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's lazy to just sit here and say to a stinks to a can't win in the cold.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen to play well in the cold a couple years ago, let's snow here in Buffalo.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: He can't have played really well.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: I and then this past season, it wasn't cold when he came to orchard park.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: But the bills, I mean, they've been dominated in the division.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: And they needed a sixty one yard fuel going from Tyler Bass to beat Miami.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think two was twenty five and twenty eight that game and this is off the latest concussion like he played really well last year for a seven eight nine game stretch statistically, I was well as any quarterback in the AMC.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't I feel like you can win with to it.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: The mistake isn't paying him.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a lot of GMs and a lot of teams that would have paid to a fifty five million a year.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: But they have to somehow keep finding the right personalities to fill out the roster.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: And when they win for it, and they were aggressive, and they're going after the jail and Ramses of the world, you're going to miss, you're not going to hit on everybody.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_01]: But maybe now some of these drafts, some of these draft picks that aren't necessarily going to make great headlines, they're getting there.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think they love the fact that nobody's talking about them really this year nationally.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the last few years, it's expectations of its sky high.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: They're flying under the radar can be a good thing for the Miami Dolphins of the twenty twenty five.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_03]: Ty, you're reporting the layers in the personal grit behind the stats.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_03]: You know, this is what exactly what moves this
- 29:15[SPEAKER_03]: Beyond just a football podcast, you know, we talk about the exes as knows, but we haven't really dug deep into culture and the identities of players and even personalities, you know, where can our listeners follow you and your new profiles that.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, I appreciate it so much for having me on because go long to the calm.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely have the tap into these dolphins as as much as possible.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: I forgot about the zax sealer story that you reference him.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: I was really cool getting to know him.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's everything that you'd want down these lines, right?
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like various state.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: I from what I remember.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, his, the weight room there was like a dungeon, right?
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: Just dusty, rocky bell boa ask.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: Those are the kind of guys that my, we dolphins need to bring this thing back.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they're getting there.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I love to make it.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: It's Patrick trade.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: Look, to a concussion conversation, we could spend hours getting into all of that.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's his choice, right?
- 30:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's his body.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's his brain.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: If he wants to do it, and he believes he can thread that needle and avoid those collisions and those hits to that.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Power to them right like that foot foot that that's the power of football man.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: And it just it it holds on to you.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: You have to drag these guys off the field.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think we lost my mic lost my mic again because I moved my arms all over.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_00]: No, you're good.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: No, you're good.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's good.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think my I think Miami can figure it out this year.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they'll be in the mix like they always are and maybe they win in December this time around.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_03]: Ty, we will definitely try to get you on during the season as well.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe you might have a new profile for us to talk about soon.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds great, guys.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks so much for having me.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_03]: Coach, I think that was that was pretty good for us and as well.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_03]: I think Coach, that was pretty good for us and I hope that Eric
- 31:13[SPEAKER_03]: could have made it, but I guess not.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_03]: And as always, y'all think you guys for listening.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he made it.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_00]: He's here.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: We continue.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_00]: We continue.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_00]: You continue.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: He made it.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: We do.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_02]: We do.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: It has been quite a journey getting home.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_03]: Quite a journey getting home, huh?
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_02]: Weather is awful right now.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: And it is, it looks like it's going to be a stormy weekend for us here in Central and South Florida.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_03]: Eric, not sure if you caught a glimpse of the conversation, but Coach, that was very informative for us to know behind the scenes of what's going on and the dolphins are organization with these players.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's always fun.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: You know, when you get outside the exes and those of things, like it's, I have a great time watching
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: watching film and I spent a good part of this week watching all of Minkas, twenty four tape and I enjoy that but it's nice to step away from that and you know get the behind the scenes get the off the field especially with somebody like Tyler who's able to sit down with some of these guys and really find out who they are off the field so that was a really fun conversation.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: Certainly, I mean, I'm going to be very honest.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't gotten a chance to really catch much of what the conversation was prior to.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_02]: But I do know that there were some very interesting circumstances around Minkas time in Miami, and I'm sure that that was
- 32:52[SPEAKER_02]: touched upon quite a bit.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, just in general, I guess I'll just start with this.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, it was a pretty surprising move overall when you think about it in aggregate to send out John and Jalen Ramsey.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_02]: And to John who's credit, he doesn't really hold any oil well towards the organization.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: I would certainly hope not considering the pay raise that he got from Pittsburgh.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_02]: But I do think Minka is the right kind of player that you would want to bring in to really lead the secondary and kind of be a really good example to some of the younger players that you have there.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm really excited to see an Anthony Weaver system that has, you know, a safety who can potentially give you elite production.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_02]: And have that kind of leadership quality about him in the secondary.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I, I listened to Thrawn Arms says podcast when he had John on and John Smith basically said that he wanted to be in Miami.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_03]: And John would thought that he was an integral piece in Miami and having them win football games.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_03]: Around midseason, the Dolphins offense had to pivot because they weren't going anywhere with Tyree, Conjeline, and Devon H. and the offensive line wasn't holding up, especially after two his injuries and concussions.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_03]: Like right after that Buffalo game, if they won that game, that season would have been a turnaround, but it took a better
- 34:42[SPEAKER_03]: Sixty one yard field gold as as Tyler done put it for the dolphins to lose like they gave everything they had and they still came up pretty short.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_03]: And pivoting to John Oostmith was more so the fail safe.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think John Oostmith was the most integral part of that offense is still to a Tyreeg Jalen and Devon, but he was the break in in in in case of emergency type of word deal and
- 35:11[SPEAKER_03]: You know, he wanted to get paid that money for his production, but the economics of what was happening in Chris grew, said it himself to John with they had a very frank conversation.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_03]: John was meant to Chris grew that, hey, I can't do it.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I really can't make it happen, even though we still want you here in Miami and you want to be with us.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_03]: They couldn't make it financially happen for Jones myth.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_03]: Secondly, Coach, and I wanted to ask you this, there's accountability, and then there could be just, you know, hey, what are you doing?
- 35:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I feel like not really bullying, but it's just too much.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's what
- 35:55[SPEAKER_03]: Tyler emphasized for Jalen Ramsian, Raheem Monster.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_03]: They weren't necessarily being bullies, but it wasn't a good type of accountability from those two leaders.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think when you talk about leadership, there's thousands of different ways that that can come across.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: And there are certain rooms that that can work with.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that if you are, you know, some of the more
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: brush personalities.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you get in a room that has other strong personalities, that can work.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think that Javan Holland, for example, probably related pretty well with Jalen Ramsey because Holland was also a pretty strong personality there.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_00]: But when you look at everybody around him, I don't know that everybody really saw that the same way.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_00]: And is it, you know, relatively new guy coming in, right?
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that you, you earn the right to
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: treat people that way in terms of, you know, being really direct with them.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_00]: That's really tough to do, right?
- 37:01[SPEAKER_00]: You got a guy like Clay's Campbell that can come in and do that, but I don't think he did it in the same way.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I think the moves that they've been making are more to get the guys that are going to gel better, right?
- 37:18[SPEAKER_00]: Tyler talked about addition by subtraction.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about what most it was doing there calling
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: other players out.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't sit well.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe if you're a more established team and that's the culture of the team.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_00]: As you've built up to that, you can get away with that.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: But when you're a team that's been struggling to get over the hump and you're a player that's no longer performing
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: At the level that you were, right, then you being that person doing that, just as kind of comes across as as bitter a lot of times, you know, in the high school world, like we have, you know, there's times at upperclassmen lose their positions to a younger player, right, and you can tell the ones that
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: accept that well or receive it well not not they receive it well, but they accept it and they're still going to try to be the best teammate they can be and they're going to try to find ways on the field versus the ones that I don't want to say sabotage the players that are out there, but you know we've talked about Mike McDaniel and you know a tiger changing his stripes if that's not what Mosher was doing when he was the the top dog in that room in terms of the death chart if he wasn't out there
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: calling out these younger guys when the coaches weren't doing it when he was the one getting all the carries.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_00]: But then, you know, his carries go down and he starts doing that.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like that doesn't go over well with players.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_00]: And as far as Johnny, like I don't have anything bad to say about Johnny.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: But I do think that the way that he, I listen to that podcast with Toronto as well.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: And he said multiple times it wasn't about the money.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about when he left New England wasn't about the money.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about when he came to Miami that
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he could have gone somewhere else and got more money.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_00]: Him being part of the reason, you know, part of the discussions that you trade to Pittsburgh, it was about the money and Lake Tyler was talking about with the Raheem most at conversation.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay to admit that, right?
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's okay to say that you, you wanted to get paid.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: Miami wouldn't do it and that you wanted to go somewhere else.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't agree with
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: sitting there and goes to the podcast saying the stuff was about money when it is and this is a business everybody understands it and I do think that you know because he got his money he left he doesn't have any ill will but I don't I agree with the move of not giving him that money because as has been talked about by lots of term people I think that the while that production was there we talked about
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: how that evolution came, that John who had that production, I don't think that losing that production means that we lose a whole lot from the offense in two thousand twenty five.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think that between those targets being redistributed back to the wider severs that were lower
- 40:07[SPEAKER_00]: In targets last year, I think that the some of the guys who brought in like Nick Westbrook Hene, the expansion of Malik Washington, I don't think we're necessarily going to miss those targets.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I was okay with, you know, kind of playing hardball there and, you know, letting Johnny go.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you brought a good point of, you know, not being too brash or, you know, being a newcomer on the team and acting that way.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_03]: They've high pretty much said that Jalen Ramsey was late to team meetings.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_03]: Same with Tyrekill was but Tyrekill was on the team for at least a year and a half, two years, knew how the offense operated and was basically the top dog.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_03]: Jalen Ramsey being the top dog as he is, Hall of Famer,
- 40:58[SPEAKER_03]: no double being that new to the team can't be linked to practice like that many can't be linked to team meetings like that and not only that going MIA on your players going MIA missing an action even throughout game week it it rubs it the wrong way granted fantastic player personality not necessarily the best mesh in my been and that's okay to say that
- 41:23[SPEAKER_03]: were the dolphins able to get good decent play out of jail and ram to, yeah, he played hard on every snap.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_03]: But then there was the issues of last season, wanting more money, you know, faking a potential ankle injury.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_03]: Jim Ramson, I'm going to say he didn't fake it, but along the line suddenly, we kind of knew, and the dolphins kind of rewarded him.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_03]: with that money saying, you know, he's a top dog, he's the best player on our secondary and potential best player on the deep fence.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_03]: Well, now you're rewarding that type of behavior, that type of culture.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_03]: And it lets the younger guys believe that that's okay when it really isn't.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_03]: So changing those tiger straps for Mike McDaniel, the dolphins organization, even some of the players that are left over after those players have left, isn't it be a hard transition
- 42:15[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know how you're going to build that accountability.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_03]: You know, as a people manager myself, these guys can point to the culture back then and be like, now you're just a complete, one hundred and eighty different.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_03]: That's still going to leave a sour taste in people's mouth.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_03]: Eric?
- 42:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm hoping that my internet issues have been solved for the time being.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_02]: clear everything on my browser.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_02]: So hopefully I don't get kicked out this time around.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm pretty sure it's not my internet.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_02]: You know, but I, you know, you do make a good point regarding the players that who you have as leaders in your locker room matters and it matters a lot, right?
- 43:12[SPEAKER_02]: Especially when
- 43:16[SPEAKER_02]: So teams show their priorities and just rewind here for a second to show their priorities in terms of by who they pay.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the biggest message that can be sent to anyone.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a message that gets sent to your team.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: When a guy is paid, the guy's in the locker room, no, okay, this is the organization's guy.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: And Jalen Ramsey, as you mentioned, ankle injury, no ankle injury,
- 43:46[SPEAKER_02]: leave that, you know, to what it is between him and the organization.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_02]: Fact of the matter is you got paid for doing that.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_02]: And when you reinforce that kind of, that kind of behavior and that kind of attitude,
- 44:06[SPEAKER_02]: then, you know, it's an example that gets set for the younger players.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_02]: You know, you're kind of sending the opposite of really what you want to send.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's, well, you know, Jalen Ramsey, he did all that and he got paid now granted, he performed on the field and that's got a larger, that's got much more to do with it than anything else.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_02]: But at a certain point,
- 44:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, okay, the guy says, yeah, well, you know, Jalen can get away with this.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_02]: Or maybe I can get away with eighty percent of that.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe I can get away with sixty percent of that.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a problem because you don't need your third and your fourth corner, you know, being those guys.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's one thing to have one of those guys in a position
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: It is not air today.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, going back to what he was saying there, you know, I think the dolphins were obviously in a tough spot with Jalen Ramsey with that contract.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that if we rewind to twelve months ago, like we were looking at a team that we were talking about with Super Bowl aspirations, like that was supposed to be the team that finally put together, finally got that playoff win and maybe would make a run.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what kind of made it
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: difficult for Chris Greer to play a hardball with Jalen Ramsey, right?
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: Because you know, obviously every week matters in the NFL and if Jalen Ramsey holds out and he's two, three weeks in the season because he's trying to get this this race and he's shown before, you know, back in his Jacksonville days that he's willing to miss games to do this.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so I think that was a risk with going that, you know, FM picks route.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_00]: This could happen.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're entering that new, new part of the roster transition here and moving off of those type of players.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think that's a bad thing, right?
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: You've had those players for a few years, right?
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now you, you know, even though we may not see it from the outside here, we see Charon Armstead and Clay's Campbell leaving and we see the leadership void that leaves and it does, right?
- 46:31[SPEAKER_00]: But at the same time, you know, we're
- 46:34[SPEAKER_00]: going into year four of Mike McDaniel and they have seen the stuff inside the locker room.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: And obviously there were issues inside the locker room last year.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_00]: We can't can't go forward doing that again.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_00]: But they've seen those guys that are working the right way.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: They're doing the right things.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think that we're seeing a transition into that and who knows whether that is going to
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: come to fruition this year, whether we're going to see those, those issues resolved, but I think they're moving in the right direction with that and getting the right type of players in here, right, you know, for all the things that, you know, Mink of Fitzpatrick did back when he wanted out.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think that, you know, there were some practice field issues, but I think it's been said that, you know, that was more of an issue with Brian Flores than it was, you know, Mink of Fitzpatrick is being a
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: and overall mal-content.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think that when you're bringing back a player like that, I think that before that happened, I know that there's been some concerns that they haven't played a video of makeup walking into the building, you haven't heard make a talk.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: I've got zero concerns with that because especially with this being a player that Miami sent away because of him not being content with the team, I don't think there's any way that they make this trade without
- 47:59[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Greer, Mike McDaniel, Anthony Weaver, talking to Minka, talking about how they intend to use him and getting his buy and that he wants to come back.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_00]: And you tie that back to the stuff of last year with jail and ramps, right?
- 48:12[SPEAKER_00]: You don't, you don't go and trade for a player without knowing exactly what you're getting.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_00]: And how do you, you know,
- 48:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, more about Minka than you do somebody else.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: If we'd have gone out and traded or signed some other safety, you're back in that scenario.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_00]: We're kind of hoping that you know the personality that you're getting.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: This is a dude that's been in the building.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you went through the draft process with him.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: You had him here for over a year.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the type of player that he is.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I don't think that bring that player back.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_00]: is any concern.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think they've been doing a good job in moving in that direction of getting those right guys in place.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: And obviously winning solves everything, right?
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: If they come out and it's a, you know, a six, seven wins season, then there's going to be locker room issues, right?
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to go six and seven wins and hear stories about how the culture's changed, but if they do come out of two, it can stay healthy.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: right and you get to ten eleven wins then the the story is going to be about how the culture changed in the locker room as part of these moves.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah certainly I think you know when you look back at at Minkas time in Miami.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of one of those things where just about everyone that you talk to that that you know is is kind of plugged into the organization
- 49:36[SPEAKER_02]: kind of feels like Minko was a little bit of a casualty of a rift between the coaching staff and the front office at the time.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a shame that he kind of got caught up in that because by all accounts he is a guy that's kind of that, you know, exemplary locker room guy.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he would hear nothing but good things out of Pittsburgh with him.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, one of the
- 50:08[SPEAKER_02]: ironic things that you heard in Pittsburgh was, you know, he was being praised for his versatility, which when he left town was something that, you know, it was, whether it was a legitimate reason or it was just a scapegoat thing.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_02]: It was well, you know, he doesn't want to be that in that versatile role where he's being played all over the field.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if it's, I mean, I'm sure he has a preference on how he's used within the system.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, and this is something that I think a guy like Mike Tomlin and I think a guy like Anthony Weaver kind understands, you know, you get more out of a guy when you just kind of know how to talk to people.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that goes a long way towards, hey, listen, we know you really want to do this, but we think it would be extremely helpful to the defense.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_02]: If we were able to use you in a variety of different ways, depending on the circumstances.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_02]: Rather than just coming in, yeah, this is the way it's going to be.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: You don't like it too bad.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_02]: You know, because it's just like in any job.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody wants to be talked to like that in any position.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_02]: And so,
- 51:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's going to be completely fine bringing him in.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_02]: However, Anthony Weber chooses to use him.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think for, you know, to mink his, you know, satisfaction.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's he's going to be used more in the way that that he prefers to be used kind of as that as a deeper safety.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't think it's far as, you know,
- 51:57[SPEAKER_02]: any kind of attitude issue or doesn't want to return to the organ like I have no worries about that whatsoever that he's, you know, sour about returning to your organization.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_03]: I think we're going to see what happens throughout this entire training camp.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_03]: Portion wants the dolphins to go back to live well activity, starting towards the end of July.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be interesting to see what happens throughout this training camp process and preseason some of the ruse and news and rumors.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_03]: And once the press press conference and start to start happening from us from the media when we start pressing the player, general manager, Chris Guru and even the coach is my big Daniel Frank Smith.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_03]: and others.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_03]: Folks, go ahead and enjoy your July fourth weekend.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_03]: Sick with us here on scouting defense part of the three-yard security podcast.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_03]: Pulse part of the five reasons sports network.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_03]: As always, y'all, dolphins.
