- 0:00Speaker 1: I guess they were.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Oh that music can mean only one thing. It's time
- 0:06Speaker 2: for our bi weekly dose of wellness from Alena Wood
- 0:11Speaker 2: from Nightingale College.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Good morning, Miss Wood.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning. How are we today?
- 0:19Speaker 3: Pretty good? It's given the weather. I don't worry you.
- 0:22Speaker 3: I know where are you?
- 0:25Speaker 1: So I'm actually in Salt Lake today, but I hail
- 0:29Speaker 1: from Utah County.
- 0:30Speaker 3: But do you do you? Do you have any trouble
- 0:32Speaker 3: driving in? Are you okay?
- 0:35Speaker 1: I am okay, thank you. Yeah, I stayed up here overnight,
- 0:37Speaker 1: so I avoided all the US this morning.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Idea.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yep, all right, Now we're going to be talking about
- 0:45Speaker 2: something that I need, how to suppress, how to hunger,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and how to get you know, not be a Fatso.
- 0:54Speaker 3: That's not what they happening, does not fat, But that's
- 0:59Speaker 3: something that I I need, not to be a fatto.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So what let's go. Let's get into this one.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Okay. So we're talking about tracking our hunger instead of
- 1:10Speaker 1: through calories, uh, basically tuning into our body. So using
- 1:16Speaker 1: a hunger and fullness scale, which raised ranges from one
- 1:21Speaker 1: to ten, and one is like you will have a
- 1:25Speaker 1: headache and you're dizzy and you're gonna pass out because
- 1:27Speaker 1: you're so so hungry, And ten is like maybe post
- 1:31Speaker 1: Thanksgiving dinner when you need to unzip your pants because
- 1:35Speaker 1: you're really really full and you need a mass belt.
- 1:42Speaker 1: This is kind of that.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I got it. I got the greatest tips for Bill.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Here.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Just a second, I'm sore everywhere my belt row. All right,
- 1:51Speaker 3: let's just waffle thin, go ahead. So yeah, okay, so
- 1:55Speaker 3: I got the scale. Now how do you what do
- 1:57Speaker 3: you do?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Bruits and format to get familiar with how you feel
- 2:02Speaker 1: when you're hungry and how you feel when you're full.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So paying attention to our body, and some of these
- 2:08Speaker 1: cues might be things like I mentioned already, your stomach growling,
- 2:12Speaker 1: you start to get a little bit of a headache.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And of course when we're feeling overly full, maybe we're
- 2:17Speaker 1: very sleepy, feeling a little bloated, and just paying attention
- 2:22Speaker 1: while we're eating, so slowing down and just kind of
- 2:27Speaker 1: checking in with our body in that way.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like my rings. When my rings are loose,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I know that I have been not been overeating. My
- 2:35Speaker 2: rings are kind of.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, you can teven into non physical
- 2:41Speaker 1: cues as well. Yeah, pay attention to how clothing and
- 2:44Speaker 1: jewelry feels on your body can help you know for sure.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Now, what about when you sit down or do you
- 2:51Speaker 2: have some advices sit down to eat?
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yes, so be present with your food and your eating experiences.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And all this really means is that we're maybe putting
- 3:03Speaker 1: our phones away, We're looking at our food before we eat,
- 3:07Speaker 1: We're noticing the way it feels in our mouths, the
- 3:11Speaker 1: taste of it, chewing enough before we swallow. Just things
- 3:16Speaker 1: like this that you know, we we try and teach
- 3:18Speaker 1: our kids to do, and sometimes as grown ups we
- 3:21Speaker 1: kind of we kind of forget.
- 3:22Speaker 3: So you shouldn't. You shouldn't.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I mean I have the tendency sometimes to read something
- 3:27Speaker 2: while I'm eating, and I shouldn't. I shouldn't distract myself
- 3:30Speaker 2: like that or watch TV. Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, So the ideal is to be fully focused on
- 3:37Speaker 1: your food and of course, if you're eating with family,
- 3:39Speaker 1: paying attention to them as well. But yeah, putting away
- 3:43Speaker 1: other distractions.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I can't talk. I'm staring intently at my plate.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Conversation with your family, yeah, yes, yes, Now what are these?
- 3:53Speaker 2: What do you when you say non hunger eating triggers?
- 3:57Speaker 2: What does that mean.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yes, So these are things like emotional eating. So sometimes
- 4:02Speaker 1: we eat when we're bored, we eat when we're sad,
- 4:05Speaker 1: we eat when we're trying to socialize, things like that,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and not that there's anything wrong necessarily with doing these things,
- 4:14Speaker 1: just becoming aware of what your specific cues are. You know, if,
- 4:19Speaker 1: for example, when I get very stressed, I really want
- 4:23Speaker 1: a snack so that I can stop thinking about my
- 4:26Speaker 1: stress and just focus on having my snack.
- 4:30Speaker 3: What you ate that whole chicken? I was bored?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, exactly, I.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Need something to do, and so recognize and everybody has
- 4:41Speaker 2: different you know. Some people eat when they're bored, some
- 4:44Speaker 2: people eat when they're anxious. Unfortunately, when I'm bored, anxious,
- 4:48Speaker 2: or when I'm happy.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Anything.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, So just start to recognize those things and maybe
- 4:57Speaker 1: as you're sitting down with that snack, just label it,
- 4:59Speaker 1: say okay, right now I'm eating because I'm bored, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: you can still eat that. Just be aware of why
- 5:06Speaker 1: you're eating.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Okay, and then eat for sayety, which means what like fullness? Right,
- 5:12Speaker 2: eat for ye fullness and satisfactory Yeah exactly.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, So food is fuel obviously, it keeps us alive,
- 5:23Speaker 1: keeps our body running. But it's also something that we
- 5:26Speaker 1: take a lot of pleasure in and we can enjoy
- 5:29Speaker 1: our food. So we want to we want to find
- 5:32Speaker 1: a balance of both when we're eating, so eat food
- 5:34Speaker 1: that fuels our body, makes us strong and fast and
- 5:38Speaker 1: all of those things, and also eat food that brings
- 5:41Speaker 1: us joy and makes us feel warm and cozy.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Okay, I guess you just have to decide that mash
- 5:49Speaker 2: potato bites talking about.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, those are really good for you, potatoes balad. That's
- 5:59Speaker 3: balance and that's okay.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Exactly every day little Debbie's ice cream sandwich, have just broccoli.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You can also have broccoli and mashed potato bites, right,
- 6:10Speaker 1: we can do both.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I figure you don't have to have just broccoli.
- 6:15Speaker 2: You can have cauliflower two.
- 6:17Speaker 1: That's all right.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Find a balance, Find a balance. That's the that's the
- 6:23Speaker 2: thing to do.
- 6:25Speaker 1: That is the message.
- 6:26Speaker 3: It's hard. It's really hard, I know it.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But Elena has told us before, Bill, you don't be
- 6:32Speaker 1: so hard on yourself.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Just start fresh every day. What are you doing today?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Exactly?
