- 0:00hello there fight friends we are with C
- 0:03Lao who is uh speaking with us from
- 0:04Toronto where he is getting ready for
- 0:06his fight this upcoming weekend in
- 0:08Trinidad and Tobago C thank you for
- 0:10joining us thank you Andy glad to be
- 0:14here that's good I'm glad you're glad
- 0:16we're all glad glad is good glad is glad
- 0:18is is happen happy is good so uh for the
- 0:21people who might be watching us who
- 0:23don't know you just take a second and
- 0:25talk about yourself your name and where
- 0:26you're from and what your training
- 0:27background is with fighting
- 0:30my name is C laoo uh I'm a mixed martial
- 0:33arts competitor um I started um with
- 0:38sand if you're not familiar with sand
- 0:40it's a form of Chinese kickboxing just
- 0:43looks it really looks like MMA but
- 0:45without the groundwork so as soon as
- 0:48there's a takedown the ref will stop the
- 0:50match stand both Fighters up and then
- 0:52they'll continue on the feet um not a
- 0:55lot of uh Sanda here in Canada um it's
- 0:59pretty popular in China in Russia in the
- 1:02Middle East but in Canada it's uh still
- 1:04hasn't really picked up yet so while I
- 1:07was training I know I was looking for
- 1:08Avenues to compete and I ended up
- 1:11competing in mixed martial
- 1:14arts um how old were you when you
- 1:16started trading
- 1:18Sanda uh I would say
- 1:21um 19 181 19 yeah how old are you now
- 1:25kind of late I am now I'm 34 now turn 34
- 1:30this year so it started kind of late I
- 1:32guess it depends who you ask but um I uh
- 1:36kind of got into Combat Sports a little
- 1:39later in life uh or some people might
- 1:41say it's uh it's your Prime right 1819
- 1:44and I started competing mix martial arts
- 1:47uh I believe uh
- 1:492022 I had my first amateur fight well
- 1:53I'd say a lot of people say that uh your
- 1:55Prime in mixed martial arts your Prime
- 1:57as as a peak physic for an adult male is
- 2:01probably not till at least you're 30 so
- 2:0331 32 so you're probably doing okay
- 2:05right now aren't you how do you feel uh
- 2:07yeah it depends you know it depends on
- 2:10everybody's a little bit different you
- 2:11know their chronological age might not
- 2:13be um you know their their physical age
- 2:16you know some people age a little bit
- 2:18slower and um I think I like to believe
- 2:21that I'm one of those people um but I'd
- 2:23be lying if I if I said that I didn't
- 2:26feel my age you know I I definitely feel
- 2:28it catching up to me recovery is a
- 2:30little bit more difficult and me being
- 2:33uh fighting and competing in the lighter
- 2:34weight classes H it is a little bit
- 2:37different right you can see you'll see
- 2:39heavy weights competing into their 40s
- 2:42whereas um at flyweight the weight I'm
- 2:45competing at next weekend um it's it's a
- 2:47little more rare to see older fly
- 2:50weights do you think it's just because
- 2:52in the lighter weight classes it's known
- 2:54as being
- 2:56faster yeah I think so I think uh your
- 2:58reflexes matter a lot and when that
- 3:01starts to go sometimes hard to keep up
- 3:04um and uh you know it's it's a little
- 3:06bit more difficult to slow us little
- 3:08guys
- 3:10down well regardless you have signed a
- 3:13contract and you are fighting this
- 3:14weekend so when I saw this fight card I
- 3:17was kind of caught by surprise because
- 3:18it's not something I'm uh that
- 3:20accustomed to fighting in Trinidad
- 3:21Tobago there's actually I think like
- 3:23five Canadians fighting on that on that
- 3:25card tell me a little bit about how you
- 3:27got signed on to that and how you became
- 3:28exposed to that organiz ation which is
- 3:30uh I think Caribbean ultimate fist
- 3:32fighting cuff correct cuff yeah so um
- 3:37big shout out to uh my friend boyan from
- 3:39dick booy Fight Club he's the one who um
- 3:42introduced me to the promoter and uh you
- 3:45know without without him this fight
- 3:47never would have would have happened so
- 3:49he he's competed there before a few
- 3:51years ago he's the cuff flyweight
- 3:54Champion um and you know he fought there
- 3:57and had good experiences there and he's
- 3:59a good good friend of mine good training
- 4:01partner of mine and he introduced me to
- 4:03the idea and then uh decided to sponsor
- 4:06myself to uh to go down there and and
- 4:09compete against the against what was
- 4:12supposed to be the best in the car
- 4:14Caribbeans but fortunately he got
- 4:16injured and he pulled out so now I'm
- 4:18fighting a
- 4:20Venezuelan so the first opponent was
- 4:22cadan and yeah I think a lot of people
- 4:24were looking forward to that fight too
- 4:25CU he's got a he's got a good reputation
- 4:27and your new opponent's name is uh let's
- 4:30see guo Salazar so tell us what you know
- 4:33about
- 4:34him um I know he's uh 0 and one just
- 4:38like myself um two uh professional
- 4:41losers competing uh uh and somebody's
- 4:44O's got to go you know hopefully it's
- 4:46mine yeah yeah imagine you somebody's 's
- 4:50got to go imagine if it's a draw imagine
- 4:52don't say that don't say
- 4:54that now people who hear you say that
- 4:57might think that you're just a a one
- 4:59fight fighter so far but that's not
- 5:00exactly true because you have quite an
- 5:02extensive amateur record too where you
- 5:03saw a lot of success so the fact that
- 5:05you were fighting for essentially a
- 5:07decade already before you went
- 5:09professional do you think that gives you
- 5:10any kind of benefit especially in
- 5:12experience when it comes to becoming a
- 5:15professional yeah I think I think it
- 5:17definitely helps but at the same time if
- 5:20you look at my amateur record a lot of
- 5:22the matches ended up finishing the first
- 5:25round so I have like 12 fights I think
- 5:29amateur
- 5:30um but uh you know a handful of them
- 5:32finish in the first round and with those
- 5:34with those kind of fights you you don't
- 5:37really learn as much as you would in
- 5:38like a three round with a three round
- 5:41decision yeah so um yeah I think it
- 5:44definitely does help but um you know I I
- 5:48uh went pro uh earlier this year was
- 5:51supposed to go pro in 2018 but a whole
- 5:53bunch of stuff happened so um here we
- 5:56are now and we're just going to try to
- 5:57make make the best of it you know well
- 6:00Co didn't help with a lot of people I
- 6:01mean that put a big uh you know Big Mess
- 6:04into everybody's plans yeah so you
- 6:07fought kind of killed my career do you
- 6:09think it killed your career um it killed
- 6:12what it what it could have been but um
- 6:14you know some things you there are
- 6:16things you can't control right so yeah
- 6:18we just uh do our best from
- 6:20here now you have fought uh quite often
- 6:23in the United States you fought in
- 6:25Canada you fought now you're going to be
- 6:26fighting in the Caribbean after this
- 6:27weekend um what's the thought process
- 6:30for you when you're getting ready for a
- 6:31fight in your backyard in Canada as
- 6:33opposed to essentially going into en
- 6:36territory um I kind of prefer competing
- 6:39abroad I I feel like there's less
- 6:41pressure you know I'm compete I always
- 6:43compete against a local guys uh and you
- 6:46know all the all the cards are are
- 6:48stacked against me and I kind of like
- 6:50that challenge and um going to fight a
- 6:54guy who's supposed to beat me and I
- 6:56think I thrive in that kind of
- 6:58environment
- 7:01tell us about your fighting style what
- 7:02do you like as a as a mix Marshal
- 7:04artist um I think I'm pretty
- 7:07well-rounded um I used to be a striker
- 7:10you know competing on in the states um
- 7:13competing against a lot of wrestlers um
- 7:15and they were just looking to take me
- 7:17down so I kind
- 7:18of kind of had built built my skills as
- 7:21a striker um looking to uh keep the
- 7:24fight on the feet but um now I'm as I'm
- 7:28starting to get older I feel like like
- 7:30it's always safer to take the fight to
- 7:31the ground and uh control where the
- 7:35fight goes so I I think I I think I'm
- 7:38pretty well-rounded um but uh you know a
- 7:41lot of my fights as as an amateur I was
- 7:44like kind of like the striker uh the
- 7:46wrestler would take me down and a lot of
- 7:48times I would submit them off my back um
- 7:51but yeah I think I'm pretty well-rounded
- 7:53I like to believe that anywhere the
- 7:55fight goes I can hold my own there nice
- 8:00um at what point did you realize that
- 8:02you wanted to become a professional and
- 8:04you said it was kind of delayed because
- 8:05of things including covid so what was it
- 8:08about 2018 and then later on now that
- 8:11prompted you to switch from the amateur
- 8:12ranks to
- 8:14professional yeah so when I started
- 8:16competing as an amateur I kind of just
- 8:18was doing it for fun um and wanting to
- 8:22test myself um I kind of built a decent
- 8:25amateur record competing against really
- 8:27good guys like I said before guys I was
- 8:29supposed to to lose to ended up ranked
- 8:32number one in the the US
- 8:34Northeast and um you know like it just
- 8:36it was an natural progression um
- 8:39competing in New York uh there wasn't a
- 8:42lot of professional fights at the time
- 8:44even now very little professional fights
- 8:46in New York you know it was illegal to
- 8:49fight professionally in New York for a
- 8:50long time uh so a lot of uh like fans
- 8:54and and people were paying like Pro
- 8:56level money for for amateur fights right
- 8:59and we had had the small 4 o gloves um
- 9:02no Shing guards no head protection
- 9:05basically competing professional rules
- 9:06aside from it being three minute rounds
- 9:09um so it was just a natural progression
- 9:12for me I wanted to go pro in 2018 uh had
- 9:15a contract to fight for BTC
- 9:18unfortunately I had to pull out from my
- 9:20fight because uh my appendex burst and I
- 9:23had to go to uh emergency
- 9:27surgery so I once I had that fixed up I
- 9:30was sitting in in the hospital bed
- 9:32depressed not sure what to do because
- 9:35you know I couldn't fight professionally
- 9:36I couldn't follow through with that
- 9:38contract I ended up taking an amateur
- 9:40fight that was like um maybe two weeks
- 9:42after I got out of the hospital ended up
- 9:44losing that fight um that was 2019 and
- 9:48then um and then and then you know uh
- 9:51covid happened and that that kind of
- 9:54delayed everything fought again amateur
- 9:57after covid lost and
- 9:59you know uh on a two-fight skid decided
- 10:03to go pro anyways um because you know
- 10:06competing at as an amateur with my
- 10:08record I'm probably going to be fighting
- 10:10better guys than I would be fighting Pro
- 10:13so sure I decided to go pro um had four
- 10:16fights fall through all of them like the
- 10:20week before the week of and then
- 10:22competing compe in my first uh Pro fight
- 10:25this year in March yeah so yeah that's
- 10:28my sad story
- 10:30it's not a sad story it's life man
- 10:32things happen to to all of us to
- 10:34everybody in all walks of life and just
- 10:36you know it's it all depends on how you
- 10:38roll with it how you how you keep on
- 10:39carrying on so you're still carrying on
- 10:41you're still fighting uh do you feel
- 10:43like you have something to prove with
- 10:44with with with a a two- fight skit as
- 10:46you put it as an amateur and then your
- 10:48your first pro fight as a loss as
- 10:51well um do I have something to prove
- 10:55maybe but you know I kind of uh stop
- 10:58fighting for other people long time ago
- 10:59I'm just doing this for myself yeah um
- 11:02and maybe something to prove to myself I
- 11:04don't think so I think I you know I
- 11:06could retire now and be happy I did some
- 11:08some pretty cool things um so not really
- 11:11I'm not I'm not looking to prove anybody
- 11:14wrong I'm just trying to compete test
- 11:16myself and uh experience everything that
- 11:19uh that life has to to give me yeah for
- 11:23sure now the thing is records can be
- 11:26deceiving right like I say this all the
- 11:28time sometimes records can tell you some
- 11:30information about a fighter sometimes it
- 11:32it can't really tell you the whole story
- 11:34so your your one pro fight in BTC it was
- 11:37by no means a blowout either it was a
- 11:38fantastic fight you just happen to be on
- 11:40the losing end but you still impressive
- 11:42skill still looking really good so I
- 11:44mean for me there's no reason why you
- 11:46would stop I mean I'm I'm happy you're
- 11:48still you're sticking with it and you're
- 11:49fighting again because you know there's
- 11:51a good chance you're going to get some
- 11:53success yeah I hope so I I feel like my
- 11:56skills are there I fought a undefeated
- 11:58guy um and I feel like I I was I was in
- 12:01there with him the whole fight until um
- 12:04you know he he uh slapped on that
- 12:06triangle um so yeah I think I would like
- 12:08to I would like to keep going keep
- 12:10competing and see see where it takes
- 12:13me where do you train see yeah I'm here
- 12:17at my gym at uh in Scaro Ontario um we
- 12:20recently rebranded to uh Trillium mix
- 12:23martial arts formerly known as ASD MMA
- 12:27got a great stable of fighter
- 12:30um a lot of a lot of pro level guys and
- 12:33a lot of great amateurs that are that
- 12:35are up and coming a lot of undefeated
- 12:37guys that are that are you know now
- 12:39looking to to make their their Pro uh
- 12:41Pro
- 12:43debut tell us uh some more names of some
- 12:45of the people you train with especially
- 12:47your main training Partners you said
- 12:48buan was was a big training partner for
- 12:50you yeah I train with buan he he's not
- 12:53uh here around here at trillum as much I
- 12:56normally uh travel and uh go abroad at
- 12:59two other gyms to train with him because
- 13:01he's across the city he's in the in the
- 13:03bron bron area right so but I'm working
- 13:06here with my guys here I got like a top
- 13:09prospect Diego de Jesus he's a really
- 13:11good uh amateur seven and 0 um looking
- 13:15to make his jump to professional uh
- 13:17salak
- 13:19badenov um let me think a bunch of other
- 13:22guys bloi Muhammad um got a lot of amers
- 13:27that here that are that are that are
- 13:28really high level
- 13:30guys how important is it to have young
- 13:32upom cut that part I was going to say
- 13:35maybe cut that part I'm forgetting a
- 13:36bunch of people I don't want them to be
- 13:38pissed off at me and beat me up and
- 13:39sparing you know no you know what I'm
- 13:42going to do you a favor and let them
- 13:43beat you up because you know it's it's
- 13:45important to stay humble and that was
- 13:47leading on to my next question I was
- 13:48leading on to my next question how
- 13:49important is it to have some young studs
- 13:51you know nipping at your heels and you
- 13:53know I'm 55 years old too and I don't
- 13:55train all that often but when I do it's
- 13:57really humbling that doesn't matter M
- 13:59what my skill level is you know some
- 14:0120-year-old kid can like smash me
- 14:03sometimes so you know how does that
- 14:06feel uh it sucks first of all um but you
- 14:09kind of have to um you have to be smart
- 14:12about it too right because these these
- 14:14young guys they come up and they're
- 14:15hungry and they're looking to prove
- 14:17something um but uh being an older guy
- 14:20you know you have to be careful not to
- 14:22get injured you got to train smart it's
- 14:24good to have these guys um to compete
- 14:27with these guys when the time is right
- 14:30and then it you got to know when to back
- 14:32off as well and to use your
- 14:35experience for sure so best case
- 14:38scenario after this weekend in Trinidad
- 14:40and Tobago your o is going to go and
- 14:43you'll be a a one-onone pro fighter do
- 14:45you have any long-term plans for the
- 14:47sport or do you just really gonna wait
- 14:49and see how it goes after this
- 14:50weekend yeah I think I'm just going to
- 14:52take it one fight at a time but
- 14:55ultimately my goal is to compete
- 14:59uh gain experience and help the fighters
- 15:02that we have here help them train help
- 15:05them as a coach I think I'm a a lot
- 15:08better Coach uh than a fighter so um
- 15:11really I'm doing this so that I can you
- 15:13know bring these guys up and I'll be
- 15:16able to tell them to to do things that
- 15:18I've done
- 15:19myself is there any part of it that you
- 15:22to to be a good coach you have to have
- 15:24the experience that you have to sort of
- 15:26let your students know that hey I know
- 15:28what I'm talking about this is what I've
- 15:29gone through and you you should learn
- 15:31from my experience yeah I mean uh I
- 15:33don't think it's mandatory because you
- 15:36know there have been um world champion
- 15:40swimming coaches that have never gotten
- 15:42wet before and for whatever reason
- 15:44they're just able to um train uh
- 15:47worldclass athletes um but I I do think
- 15:50it is uh valuable to have that
- 15:52experience not only um for the athletes
- 15:56looking at the coach but also to know
- 15:59without a doubt that I have experienced
- 16:01it before and know what what it feels
- 16:03like you know and that that will that
- 16:05experience is invaluable to to be able
- 16:07to coach someone knowing that you've
- 16:09been there
- 16:10before for
- 16:13sure okay see uh I really appreciate you
- 16:15taking the time to speak with us it's
- 16:17pretty awesome I'm really excited that
- 16:18you're actually going to represent uh
- 16:20your jym and in Ontario and Canada in
- 16:22the Caribbean so we wish you the best of
- 16:24luck and any final words anything you'd
- 16:25like to say before we go I'd like to
- 16:28give a big Shout shout out to all my
- 16:29sponsors um uh thick boy especially
- 16:33who's uh you know helping me out a lot
- 16:35this Camp to uh head over to Trinidad um
- 16:38I have a bunch of other other sponsors
- 16:40that support me um thank you so much to
- 16:44you uh MMA Andy make sure you guys
- 16:46follow subscribe to his channel he does
- 16:49a lot for Canadian mixed martial arts
- 16:51and uh if you're interested in my fight
- 16:54uh I hope to see you guys there and
- 16:57again hopefully my will we'll leave
- 16:59after this
- 17:00fight all right see best of luck from
- 17:02everyone here thank you Andy have a good
- 17:06day I'll see you soon you too safe
- 17:08travels
