- 0:00Aloha. Monday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening across the islands today.
- 1:42Scattered showers today, heaviest on windward and mountain areas. The Big Island is seeing heavier rain this morning with minor flooding in low-lying spots. If you're driving the Hāna Highway or heading to a summit, expect clouds and wet roads through early morning. Leeward beaches stay drier and calmer today before the trade winds strengthen later in the week.
- 2:00South-facing shores are set up for bigger surf building through midweek. Right now, Oʻahu's south shore is 3.9 feet and comfortable for swimmers, the north shore is moderate at 4.3 feet with shore break to watch for, and the Big Island is nearly glass-flat at 1.4 feet. North-facing beaches will also pick up swell as the week goes on.
- 2:16Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is under alert status for Kīlauea activity. Kīpukapuaulu Trail is closed for hazardous trees, and the Lava Tube Bridge is being replaced. If you're heading to the park, stick to open areas and heed caution notices about volcanic ash, especially if you have respiratory sensitivity.
- 2:32Our guide on glass-bottom boat tours across Hawaiʻi breaks down how they compare to snorkel cruises and submarines, where they actually run, and who they're for. If reef viewing appeals to you but snorkeling doesn't, this covers what the experience is actually like and which islands have reliable operations. The piece is on the site.
- 2:49Wednesday brings stronger trades and the south swell climbs through the week. Thursday and Friday stay building, then it starts to ease over the weekend.
- 2:57If you're at a leeward beach today, our snorkel guide is worth a quick read. Talk to you tomorrow.
