- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to a brand spank and new
- 0:09Speaker 1: edition of Cardinal Territory. Met Holiday and Lancelin are out
- 0:14Speaker 1: doing what wealthy folks doing their free time. But I'm here.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm Jim Hayes. Kyle Gibson is here and we have
- 0:21Speaker 1: a special guest, Ryan Helsley, joins Cardinal Territory today.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hello, Ryan, what's up?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on, and yeah, welcome.
- 0:34Speaker 2: My first question is this, It's great to see you.
- 0:37Speaker 2: By the way, you set.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Records as the closer with the Cardinals, right, and you
- 0:46Speaker 1: go to New York Trade and you're the setup guy
- 0:51Speaker 1: and suddenly the role that you've flourished and set the
- 0:54Speaker 1: franchise record for saves is changed. So my question is
- 1:00Speaker 1: how much of an impact did that have on what
- 1:03Speaker 1: happened in New York.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously, you know I got traded in New York.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Going into it, I knew I was wasn't gonna be
- 1:10Speaker 3: the closer, you know, to have a guy there who's
- 1:13Speaker 3: been pretty stinging good his whole career too, and you know,
- 1:15Speaker 3: has a lot of talent and had a great year,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and so I knew I was gonna kind of be
- 1:20Speaker 3: a guy in that sixth seventh eighth inning slot. And
- 1:23Speaker 3: you know, had a great conversation with Mindy when I
- 1:25Speaker 3: got there and the coaching staff, and you know, so
- 1:27Speaker 3: I know my role was. It's a little bit of adjustment,
- 1:30Speaker 3: you know, figuring out your new you know, time slots
- 1:33Speaker 3: to get ready and things like that. But uh, you know, overall,
- 1:35Speaker 3: I felt I felt great there, and you know, the
- 1:38Speaker 3: coaching staff was great, and you know, my time there
- 1:41Speaker 3: was good. As a player, you know, I could have
- 1:42Speaker 3: done some things a little better, but uh, you know,
- 1:45Speaker 3: I enjoyed my time there with the coaching staff and
- 1:47Speaker 3: the players.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Hell's getting traded in the middle of the season, did it?
- 1:54Speaker 4: Twenty one? Traded to a contender, right, you know, traded
- 1:58Speaker 4: to Philly. We're trying to make the playoffs. And I
- 2:01Speaker 4: know the tough thing for me was I had a
- 2:03Speaker 4: couple of stars where I threw well, but really down
- 2:06Speaker 4: the stretch, I didn't throw how I wanted to throw.
- 2:09Speaker 4: And it's frustrating. Right, you get brought to a team
- 2:11Speaker 4: and you're this guy that's hopefully going to make a difference.
- 2:15Speaker 4: How'd that wear on you? How did you deal with it?
- 2:17Speaker 4: And I know the guys are greater that. I'm sure.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I know Jeremy Helfner, he's a stud. But you know,
- 2:22Speaker 4: how is overall that transition to a new team, because
- 2:25Speaker 4: I know, you know, in our conversations in twenty four,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, I think we were hoping that Ryan Helsley
- 2:30Speaker 4: was a Cardinals whole career, right, So you know, how
- 2:33Speaker 4: how was that transition and and you know how is
- 2:37Speaker 4: that time with Heffner and those guys.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I for sure wanted to be a
- 2:41Speaker 3: Cardinal the whole time I was there. That's all I
- 2:43Speaker 3: ever knew. You know, I was there parts of eleven years,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you know, seven years in the big leagues and four
- 2:47Speaker 3: years in the minor leagues, and you know, there's I've
- 2:51Speaker 3: had a lot of trade talks about my career there,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and you know where we were currently at before the
- 2:56Speaker 3: trade downline, you know, just felt that that's what the
- 2:59Speaker 3: Cardinals were going to do. So I think I saw
- 3:01Speaker 3: the riding on the wall, you know, like it wasn't
- 3:02Speaker 3: a total shop and I got traded. So I think
- 3:04Speaker 3: that helped. But you know, being there in New York,
- 3:07Speaker 3: the guys there, you know, had had a lot of
- 3:10Speaker 3: fun and like you said, trying to you know, make
- 3:12Speaker 3: a difference. You know, I don't know that I put
- 3:14Speaker 3: any more pressure on myself, but I definitely expected a
- 3:16Speaker 3: lot more of myself, you know while I was there,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and you know, felt felt good. You know, I was healthy.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Just obviously the results for bad. You know, started out
- 3:24Speaker 3: good and had a tough four to five week stretch
- 3:26Speaker 3: there and end of the year pretty well. But yeah,
- 3:29Speaker 3: it's just it's just a weird feeling being on such
- 3:31Speaker 3: a good team, you know, and you're making a push,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and you know, that's probably the most talent I've I've
- 3:35Speaker 3: had on a team, you know, top to bottom, especially
- 3:38Speaker 3: in a bullpen. You know, I was I was the
- 3:39Speaker 3: youngest guy in the bullpen, which is crazy to say.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I've never seen it. You know, I was really thirty
- 3:45Speaker 3: thirty one years old, and I think I was the
- 3:47Speaker 3: youngest guy in the bullpen. So we had a super
- 3:49Speaker 3: vet bullpen, you know, guys that pitched in a World
- 3:51Speaker 3: Series and all this and that. So that was cool
- 3:53Speaker 3: to learn from those guys, and you know, see baseball
- 3:56Speaker 3: through a different lens. And you know, such a big
- 3:58Speaker 3: market in New York, and I mean the fans were great,
- 4:02Speaker 3: you know, they're super dedicated they're probably a lot like
- 4:04Speaker 3: Philly fans as you know, you've you've experienced that, you
- 4:06Speaker 3: know n L East rivalry and the crowds there, and
- 4:11Speaker 3: you know it'll be it'll be exciting to see what
- 4:13Speaker 3: they do this year. And but overall, you know, I
- 4:16Speaker 3: really enjoyed my time there.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Huge. Well, Jim, Jim, you told me I'm asking questions today,
- 4:23Speaker 4: all right.
- 4:24Speaker 2: You know we're going back and forth.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Oh, okay, go ahead, Jim, Yeah you're fine. No, you go,
- 4:29Speaker 4: you go go uh the real quick and then I'll
- 4:34Speaker 4: let Jim ask a question. Tell me about the different
- 4:37Speaker 4: What do you like about New York? I mean, obviously
- 4:39Speaker 4: you've been there multiple times, but you know, how do
- 4:42Speaker 4: you how did you get acclimated? What do you and
- 4:44Speaker 4: the family do you know? I'm I'm a big fan
- 4:48Speaker 4: of a pizza place over there in Brooklyn that's a
- 4:50Speaker 4: little bit closer to Queens. But tell me tell me
- 4:53Speaker 4: what you guys did and how'd you like that?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, we did ever get to make it over there.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I really tried, but traffic in New York a different beast.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And you know, we only had a couple off days
- 5:03Speaker 3: while I was there, and I think only had like
- 5:04Speaker 3: one off day while we were at home. But yeah,
- 5:09Speaker 3: the traffic in New York is definitely makes you think
- 5:11Speaker 3: twice about your plans every day, you know, especially on
- 5:15Speaker 3: an off day. You're like, I'm gonna spend half my
- 5:17Speaker 3: day trying to get here and get there. And you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we lived out on Long Island near Garden City and
- 5:24Speaker 3: it wasn't too bad. It's definitely different, you know, a
- 5:26Speaker 3: lot different than Saint Louis. And you know, I think
- 5:29Speaker 3: overall that, you know, if we were to be able
- 5:32Speaker 3: to pick a place to live, you know, for a
- 5:34Speaker 3: full season, you know, getting traded during the middle of
- 5:36Speaker 3: year and trying to find a place to live is
- 5:38Speaker 3: just so hectic and it's really hard when you have
- 5:40Speaker 3: a family and you got to I mean you've experienced,
- 5:42Speaker 3: like you got to move everything, and you know, it's
- 5:44Speaker 3: just there's so many things that people don't think about
- 5:46Speaker 3: that you have to deal with, and you know, it's
- 5:50Speaker 3: it was just a hectic time. But I really enjoyed
- 5:52Speaker 3: it there. And you know, we had an off day
- 5:54Speaker 3: there and we took the family out to Central Park
- 5:56Speaker 3: and got to do some you know, blooey stuff for
- 5:59Speaker 3: the daughters. And I think my oldest daughter. She got
- 6:03Speaker 3: to go to Danny go. She got to watch him
- 6:05Speaker 3: in concert. You know, I think they skipped the game
- 6:07Speaker 3: one day game, went and watched Danny go downtown in Manhattan.
- 6:10Speaker 3: So my daughter loved the city. You know. She every
- 6:12Speaker 3: time she'd see the skyline, she's like, we're going to
- 6:15Speaker 3: the city. So she she had a blast. And you know, overall,
- 6:19Speaker 3: I think our experience is pretty good. Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 2: No, I have a two part question.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I say two to let's two questions.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Okay, that's about right.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yle Kyle Gibson as a teammate, was he as bossy
- 6:34Speaker 1: as he is as a member of this podcast?
- 6:36Speaker 3: Well, a teammate, no give you is one of my
- 6:40Speaker 3: I think favorite teammates of all time. And me and
- 6:43Speaker 3: Kyle on the road once we got to know each
- 6:45Speaker 3: other a little more because obviously we only played together
- 6:47Speaker 3: for one year. But you know, every day on the road,
- 6:50Speaker 3: unless one of us slept in, we'd go get coffee together,
- 6:53Speaker 3: we'd walk around whatever city we were in. So those
- 6:56Speaker 3: will be memories that I always hold on to. And
- 6:58Speaker 3: you know, something I tried to carry over you know,
- 7:00Speaker 3: this year, and so that's fun, you know, spending time
- 7:03Speaker 3: with your teammates and getting to know them, and you know,
- 7:05Speaker 3: you spend way more time with them than you do
- 7:07Speaker 3: with your families throughout the course of the years. So
- 7:10Speaker 3: just trying to build that bond, and you know, Gibby's
- 7:12Speaker 3: going to be up on my list for a long time.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Now, I'm going to stipulate that you guys are both pitchers,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and I'm a mediocre broadcaster that really doesn't understand the
- 7:23Speaker 1: nuances of this.
- 7:24Speaker 2: So help me with this if you would.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Ryan, Okay, I know from interviewing guys like Izzy over
- 7:31Speaker 1: the years that being a closer, there's a certain mental preparation.
- 7:36Speaker 2: There is a certain mentality that you have to have.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So my question to you is, I know you, and
- 7:41Speaker 1: I know you want to say all the right things,
- 7:42Speaker 1: but how much of a mental change did you have
- 7:48Speaker 1: to make going from the guy at the end of
- 7:51Speaker 1: the game, the guy who's going to get the ball
- 7:54Speaker 1: to put the win in the win column, and then
- 7:57Speaker 1: transition that to being a setup guy where you're not
- 8:01Speaker 1: exactly sure you know when you're coming in. How much
- 8:05Speaker 1: of a mental change should you have to make?
- 8:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely a lot different, you know, like you're
- 8:10Speaker 3: so as a closer. Kind of weird to say, but
- 8:12Speaker 3: throughout the season you're so routine oriented. You know, you
- 8:16Speaker 3: have everything you do inning by inning, you know, you
- 8:18Speaker 3: start doing Like for me, I would go to the
- 8:21Speaker 3: training room as soon as the game started, and innings
- 8:24Speaker 3: one through four, I was doing all my prep in
- 8:25Speaker 3: there and try to get to the bullpen by the
- 8:28Speaker 3: fifth inning, you know, sit there for one inning. Sixth inning,
- 8:31Speaker 3: I'm starting my stretch routine with the therair gun. Seventh inning,
- 8:34Speaker 3: I'm doing movements, you know. Eighth inning, I'm doing my band.
- 8:37Speaker 3: So like you have your so regimen as a closer,
- 8:39Speaker 3: and I think that helps you kind of get locked
- 8:41Speaker 3: in and keep your focus, you know, because as a closer,
- 8:44Speaker 3: you know, your role is really defined, and I'm either
- 8:48Speaker 3: throwing if the game's tied, or for up by three,
- 8:52Speaker 3: you know, maybe four if I haven't pitched in a
- 8:53Speaker 3: few days. But as a setup guy, it's like, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 3: I could throw the fifth or sixth. I might get
- 8:58Speaker 3: hot twice today and maybe we go up by five
- 9:02Speaker 3: or sixth and the ninth and now I have the ninth,
- 9:04Speaker 3: you know. So it's definitely a lot different and there's
- 9:07Speaker 3: a lot more, you know, peaks and valleys out there,
- 9:09Speaker 3: I think as a setup guy. And you know, with
- 9:11Speaker 3: my time in New York, it not that I forgot
- 9:14Speaker 3: what a setup guy was like, but it made me
- 9:16Speaker 3: have more of an appreciation for what those guys do
- 9:18Speaker 3: day in and day out and kind of what they
- 9:21Speaker 3: deal with on a daily basis. And you know, just
- 9:24Speaker 3: constantly having to stay ready and you know, be ready
- 9:28Speaker 3: for when the phone rings. But I think, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 3: that's also a fun part of it, is kind of
- 9:32Speaker 3: always living life on the edge. You know, you're just
- 9:35Speaker 3: you know, sitting there itching ready for a moment's notice
- 9:38Speaker 3: and you hear your name, you know, and you shoot up.
- 9:39Speaker 3: And but it's definitely it's definitely a lot different going
- 9:43Speaker 3: from that closure role to you know, being a guy
- 9:46Speaker 3: that could throw from innings five through nine.
- 9:49Speaker 4: You know, all right, so Jim's gonna ask all the
- 9:52Speaker 4: baseball questions, you know, just typically guy here trying to
- 9:56Speaker 4: get baseball inside. What the that's perfect great timing. What's
- 10:00Speaker 4: the coffee you got this morning? What's your coffee spot?
- 10:02Speaker 4: You're on the West coast right now, you know, where'd
- 10:05Speaker 4: you go this morning? Because like Hell said, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 4: we we did a lot of coffee runs in the morning,
- 10:10Speaker 4: kind of getting our day started. And definitely some of
- 10:12Speaker 4: my favorite times in my career from twenty twenty four
- 10:16Speaker 4: was was doing that and finding those coffee shops. So
- 10:18Speaker 4: where'd you go this morning? And what's getting ready for
- 10:21Speaker 4: this golf match?
- 10:22Speaker 3: So this is called a place called Fairgrounds. It's up
- 10:26Speaker 3: here in Beverly Hills. It's pretty good. I think it's
- 10:31Speaker 3: more of I don't really know like my roast yet.
- 10:33Speaker 3: It tastes a little darker. I just know if I
- 10:35Speaker 3: like it, if it tastes good, you know, it's a
- 10:37Speaker 3: solid I'll give it like an eight out of ten.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Not my favorite, but it's getting the job done, you know.
- 10:41Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, what the I'm thinking with the quad
- 10:43Speaker 3: shot here, Gibby got me on that. Used to be
- 10:49Speaker 3: a flavored guy, you know, get some vanilla surf from there.
- 10:51Speaker 3: But you know, I grew up a little bit and
- 10:54Speaker 3: leaned myself off all the flavorings and sugars, so enjoying
- 10:57Speaker 3: the coffee flavor a little bit.
- 10:59Speaker 4: You know, it does happen everybody. Everybody grows up at
- 11:02Speaker 4: some point else and then you start, you know, drinking
- 11:05Speaker 4: your straight gasoline in the morning. So that's good fair ground.
- 11:08Speaker 4: That's a unique name. I like that. I like that.
- 11:11Speaker 4: And what was so in your time in New York?
- 11:13Speaker 4: You know, we went to a couple but we were
- 11:14Speaker 4: in uh, you know, we were more in the city.
- 11:17Speaker 4: What are those spots that you found where you guys lived.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Did you find a good one?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, we would go to play I think it was
- 11:25Speaker 3: what was the place we went to?
- 11:26Speaker 4: Common grounds or common grounds? Yeah, there's the one thing
- 11:30Speaker 4: of Black Fox as well in New York then.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Too, Yeah, we went to the common grounds. It was
- 11:34Speaker 3: south of Garden City.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Cool.
- 11:37Speaker 3: So every every morning we do that and go find
- 11:39Speaker 3: a playground, you know, for the girls to play on
- 11:41Speaker 3: and just go out of the house and spend some
- 11:43Speaker 3: family time together. But you know, when I got to
- 11:45Speaker 3: New York, I think my cafe and then take like Triple Dude.
- 11:48Speaker 3: They had they.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Hadn't but.
- 11:51Speaker 3: They had the law Marzaco. You've seen that brand, right,
- 11:54Speaker 3: like all the coffee brands, the Italian brand. So they
- 11:57Speaker 3: had the really nice like home set of in the
- 12:02Speaker 3: weight room and they traveled with one on the road.
- 12:05Speaker 3: So it was like you just had the best coffee
- 12:08Speaker 3: at your fingertips all day long. So like, how could
- 12:11Speaker 3: you not just ingest a thousand milligrams of coffee you know,
- 12:14Speaker 3: every single day, so I also be caffeinated my time
- 12:18Speaker 3: in New York.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You are watching Coffee Talk on this edition of Cardinal Territory.

- 13:29Speaker 2: Back with Cardinal Territory.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Our guest is Ryan Helsley, and since I have control,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'm going to fire out a quick question here. Ryan,
- 13:37Speaker 1: you're a free agent. Now, what's that process like for you? Like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: how does that work? Does your agent like give you
- 13:44Speaker 1: updates at getting a nibble here? How does that work?
- 13:47Speaker 1: And what's it been like for you?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty pretty surreal to be here, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 3: I know it's a blessing and not a whole lot
- 13:56Speaker 3: of players get to experience free agency, you know. So
- 13:58Speaker 3: I'm definitely excited and you know, thankful, and you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: my agents will text me, you know, every other day,
- 14:05Speaker 3: maybe because I think the GM meetings are going on
- 14:07Speaker 3: right now. So talks and stuff have picked up a
- 14:09Speaker 3: little bit, and you know, I like to I've called
- 14:12Speaker 3: it windows shopping so far, you know, it's like, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 3: teams will say they like you, and but there's no
- 14:16Speaker 3: there's hasn't been you know, real numbers talk or anything
- 14:19Speaker 3: like that yet, which you know, I think that obviously
- 14:21Speaker 3: pick up you know, as the off season goes on.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And but overall, it's it's pretty cool, you know, it's
- 14:27Speaker 3: it's a it's crazy to be here in this moment,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, to be here seven years down the road
- 14:32Speaker 3: and you know, have an opportunity to you know, hopefully
- 14:35Speaker 3: have an opportunity to pick pick where you play, and
- 14:38Speaker 3: you know, have multiple options.
- 14:41Speaker 4: What uh. You know one thing that Brian Doser told
- 14:44Speaker 4: me kind of going into my last year in Minnesota,
- 14:47Speaker 4: he had just become a free agent. He's like, Gibby,
- 14:49Speaker 4: don't be afraid of free agency, like, you know, enjoy
- 14:52Speaker 4: the process. Take it in. I was fortunate to go
- 14:55Speaker 4: through it a few times. How how are you and
- 14:58Speaker 4: the family dealing with it? You know, what are the conversations?
- 15:00Speaker 4: You don't have to let us in on all of it, obviously,
- 15:02Speaker 4: but you know, it is an exciting time. But I mean,
- 15:06Speaker 4: I know, especially for me last year a little bit,
- 15:08Speaker 4: you know, it's set in as time went on and
- 15:10Speaker 4: I didn't have a job, It's like, man, all right,
- 15:12Speaker 4: maybe this is maybe this is it now. Obviously you're
- 15:14Speaker 4: not going to be in that situation. But you know,
- 15:17Speaker 4: are you guys kind of just waiting on a little
- 15:19Speaker 4: bit of you know, what are these opportunities or or
- 15:21Speaker 4: do you guys kind of have you know, those talks
- 15:23Speaker 4: of man, we'd really like to be here with that group.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's natural to want to be somewhere,
- 15:30Speaker 3: but I also think, you know, for me, I'm trying
- 15:33Speaker 3: to go into it as open minded and like willing
- 15:36Speaker 3: to play anywhere, you know, so you're not like, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 3: just hardened if you don't go to the place you
- 15:42Speaker 3: want to go to, so to say. So really just
- 15:45Speaker 3: going into as an open mind, you know. And it's
- 15:47Speaker 3: an exciting time and you know a lot of a
- 15:51Speaker 3: lot of teams that are looking for back end guys
- 15:53Speaker 3: or bigger market teams. So you know, I think a
- 15:56Speaker 3: lot of that stuff is exciting and appealing to my
- 15:59Speaker 3: my wife and daughter who loved the Big Apple City
- 16:02Speaker 3: she called it in New York. So but selfishly, you know,
- 16:06Speaker 3: I'd love to stay close to home, you know, like Texas,
- 16:08Speaker 3: maybe Reunion with the Cardinals, you know, Kansas City, just
- 16:11Speaker 3: because I have a lot of family members who like
- 16:13Speaker 3: to travel, and obviously the further you are away from Oklahoma,
- 16:17Speaker 3: it's a little harder to travel and a little more
- 16:18Speaker 3: expensive than driving. So but obviously I'm open to playing,
- 16:23Speaker 3: you know, anywhere, and you know, I just want to compete.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Are you Are you hoping that the Cardinals come and
- 16:29Speaker 2: call him?
- 16:29Speaker 1: By the way the kids say, they call it getting
- 16:33Speaker 1: the bag, so wherever you end up, you're getting the band.
- 16:35Speaker 2: But are you hopeful?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Jim? I apologize he does this to Lance and Matt
- 16:42Speaker 4: and sometimes me more of those guys because they have
- 16:45Speaker 4: a bigger bag than I have, so I mean they
- 16:47Speaker 4: he does this to everybody every show. So I apologize
- 16:50Speaker 4: that he does this, all right, go ahead.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Because because I'm because I'm I'm I'm jealous. But is
- 16:57Speaker 1: that is that in your mind a h a re
- 17:00Speaker 1: possible reality that the Cardinals start, as you say, windows shopping,
- 17:04Speaker 1: maybe kicking the tires on a return.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I think I would expect them to reach out, you know,
- 17:11Speaker 3: I think I don't know if it'll be you know, serious,
- 17:15Speaker 3: but maybe to check in and you know, kind of
- 17:16Speaker 3: gauge the waters, so to speak. And you know, I
- 17:19Speaker 3: had a good talk with him after I was I
- 17:21Speaker 3: was traded, and you know it was really encouraging the
- 17:24Speaker 3: possibly maybe you know, coming back there, and you know,
- 17:27Speaker 3: obviously things changed. That was three months ago, but you know,
- 17:31Speaker 3: you know, I really enjoyed my time getting to know
- 17:33Speaker 3: how m a little bit and think that the Cardinal's
- 17:35Speaker 3: future is in really good hands with him.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So let's let's dive into some of that Cardinals time, right.
- 17:42Speaker 4: You know, it says Cardinals territory, So I guess you know,
- 17:45Speaker 4: Jim probably wouldn't be too happy if we don't bring
- 17:47Speaker 4: up the Cardinals other than possibly coming back. But you know,
- 17:50Speaker 4: what were some of those moments with the Cardinals of standout?
- 17:52Speaker 4: I mean you, like you said, seven seasons, sub three
- 17:57Speaker 4: All Stars, I mean just just you accomplished just about everything, right,
- 18:01Speaker 4: So you know, tell us about that time in Saint Louis.
- 18:03Speaker 4: What are you gonna remember most if you know, for
- 18:06Speaker 4: any reason, you know that reunion doesn't happen at some
- 18:08Speaker 4: point in the future.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I think obviously, you know, my rookie year stands out.
- 18:13Speaker 3: You know. Obviously it's everything's so new that year, and
- 18:15Speaker 3: you know, we made it to the NLCS, so we
- 18:18Speaker 3: you know, made a deep playoff run. Obviously we got
- 18:20Speaker 3: swept by the Nats. But you know, we made the
- 18:22Speaker 3: playoffs my first four years and it's kind of crazy
- 18:25Speaker 3: as to play. You kind of take that for granted.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Sometimes then when you don't make it a couple of times,
- 18:29Speaker 3: you realize how hard it really is to make the postseason,
- 18:33Speaker 3: even with so many teams getting in. Now, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 3: the league is just so competitive, and you know, I
- 18:37Speaker 3: think the talent gap is probably the smallest it's ever been,
- 18:40Speaker 3: and it's just you know, things like that, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 3: make the game fun and making the playoffs is just
- 18:46Speaker 3: a surreal feeling. And you know, obviously I think twenty
- 18:49Speaker 3: two stands out was the first year I really kind
- 18:52Speaker 3: of stepped onto the scene and you know, pitched how
- 18:54Speaker 3: it wanted to and kind of became, you know, Ryan
- 18:57Speaker 3: Helsley to the baseball world, and you know, through immaculate
- 19:01Speaker 3: inning that year, got to play with Albert Yachti and WNO,
- 19:03Speaker 3: So that season is always super special, and you know,
- 19:06Speaker 3: we clinched the NL Central that year, and you know,
- 19:08Speaker 3: one of my favorite pictures was when we clinched in
- 19:10Speaker 3: Milwaukee with Wayno, Yachti and Alburt, you know, just kind
- 19:14Speaker 3: of the pillars of Cardinals baseball. The last twenty plus years,
- 19:17Speaker 3: and you know, guys, I grew up watching so that
- 19:19Speaker 3: you know, I felt like a kid in that moment
- 19:21Speaker 3: just to you know, and a fan, you know, being
- 19:23Speaker 3: a part of that team and you know, just getting
- 19:26Speaker 3: to sit there and you know, just kind of cherish
- 19:27Speaker 3: that and take it all in. And then, you know,
- 19:29Speaker 3: the longer you get to play, you know, it's like
- 19:32Speaker 3: you don't want to admit that you're getting older, that
- 19:33Speaker 3: old guy in the locker room, you know. But like
- 19:35Speaker 3: it's like every time you show up the spring, it's
- 19:38Speaker 3: like in twenty three like dang Yachti's not here, Albert's
- 19:42Speaker 3: not here, you know, and then twenty four, Wayno's not here.
- 19:45Speaker 3: So it was it's pretty crazy. And also the blessing
- 19:48Speaker 3: obviously the longer you play, but in twenty four is
- 19:50Speaker 3: obviously really special too, just you know, getting to pitch
- 19:54Speaker 3: all year and having forty nine saves and just being
- 19:58Speaker 3: a part of you know, such a story franchise with
- 20:01Speaker 3: so many good players, and you know there's a lot
- 20:04Speaker 3: in there to really take in and you know, to
- 20:06Speaker 3: hold on.
- 20:06Speaker 1: To Ryan by the way, great guy. I'm going to
- 20:10Speaker 1: tell you a little story. So I'm doing the postgame
- 20:13Speaker 1: interview for Hellsley. He gets to say it was like
- 20:16Speaker 1: save fourteen that season, and he's holding onto the ball
- 20:19Speaker 1: and I'm thinking maybe it has some significance. So I
- 20:22Speaker 1: just said, Hey, does Eppe have some significance? He goes, no,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I'm just holding it. He goes, you want to give it.
- 20:26Speaker 2: To your son so much.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Son has saved fourteen one season for Ryan Helsley. But Ryan,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you're seeing Kyle Gibson shine right now as a host
- 20:36Speaker 1: because he's asking questions probably better than me.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So kudos to you.
- 20:41Speaker 1: But this is where skill comes into play. I talk
- 20:44Speaker 1: about the bag right, the wealth, and I'm a little
- 20:46Speaker 1: jealous of, you know, the professional athletes. I don't have
- 20:50Speaker 1: the kind of money, but watch me, watch me translate
- 20:53Speaker 1: this into a live read for a sponsor. So the
- 20:57Speaker 1: finances I do have, as miniscule as they are, I'm
- 21:00Speaker 1: a mess. I don't know where my money's going. And
- 21:03Speaker 1: that's where Monarch Money came into play for me. It's
- 21:06Speaker 1: an all in one personal finance tool that brings your

- 23:01Speaker 1: We'll work on that though. With Ryan Helsley, right, I
- 23:04Speaker 1: want to ask you, like when you got traded, right,
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Cardinals put stock on a lot of the young
- 23:09Speaker 1: guys in the bullpen. You know them very well, guys
- 23:11Speaker 1: like Swanson, Leahey, you know O'Brien really really good of course, Jojo.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I want to ask you particularly about like Swawnson who
- 23:21Speaker 1: became dominant. Did you know that these guys were ready
- 23:25Speaker 1: to take the next step back when you were part
- 23:27Speaker 1: of the team.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Yeah. So I met Swanson in twenty three when I
- 23:30Speaker 3: was rehabbing in Springfield and he'd just goten traded over
- 23:33Speaker 3: from I believe the Blue Jays, you know, and I
- 23:36Speaker 3: knew I saw him then. He was a big kid
- 23:37Speaker 3: and kind of funky, you know, and you know, kind
- 23:40Speaker 3: of a steep approach, it seemed like, with the heavy sinker.
- 23:43Speaker 3: And you know, he obviously threw hard, and he had
- 23:45Speaker 3: a great year last year in Double A. You know,
- 23:47Speaker 3: I think he led the league and with saves with that,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and you know, the stuff was there he saw as
- 23:51Speaker 3: soon as he came up, you know, throwing ninety seven
- 23:54Speaker 3: ninety eight and with two really good auscy pitches, and
- 23:57Speaker 3: you know he tacked his own well all the things
- 23:58Speaker 3: you need to do as a bullpen guy, and you know,
- 24:00Speaker 3: just the way he carries himself. You know, you kind
- 24:03Speaker 3: of had the idea that this guy could you know,
- 24:05Speaker 3: be a contributor. And you know, I think they saw
- 24:07Speaker 3: that down the stretch this year. And you know, I
- 24:09Speaker 3: was always a big believer in Riley O'Brien, you know,
- 24:11Speaker 3: seeing him last year too. I know in twenty four
- 24:13Speaker 3: he didn't pitch how he wanted to, but you know,
- 24:16Speaker 3: I'd always tell the coaching staff like, this guy's gonna
- 24:18Speaker 3: be good, you know, just give him some time. And
- 24:20Speaker 3: you know, you see it with all players, you know,
- 24:22Speaker 3: not everybody makes that leap or figures it out, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 3: as fast as they want to or as quick as
- 24:26Speaker 3: everybody thinks they should. But you know, I think he
- 24:29Speaker 3: figured it out a little bit this year, and you know,
- 24:30Speaker 3: saw what he was capable of, and you know, JoJo's
- 24:34Speaker 3: had a great year. We know what he's capable of,
- 24:35Speaker 3: and you know, I think it was cool to watch
- 24:37Speaker 3: Kyle really flourish this year. And you know, I don't
- 24:40Speaker 3: think he gets enough credit for what he really did,
- 24:42Speaker 3: with how many different roles and situations he pitched in
- 24:45Speaker 3: and played. And you know, like I said earlier, it's
- 24:47Speaker 3: hard not knowing when you're gonna throw. And he would
- 24:50Speaker 3: throw one any one night, you know, up in the
- 24:51Speaker 3: eighth by one, or throw four the next day down
- 24:54Speaker 3: by seven. You know, So just having that wide range
- 24:57Speaker 3: and to be able to pitch and compete and get
- 24:59Speaker 3: the results that he did this year, you know, hats
- 25:02Speaker 3: off to him, and I think it's something he could
- 25:03Speaker 3: be proud of and you know, build off of.
- 25:07Speaker 4: We've talked a few times on here over the last
- 25:09Speaker 4: couple of weeks just about you know, what the Cardinals
- 25:11Speaker 4: might do and what that looks like in him's first year.
- 25:15Speaker 4: But you know, one thing that I brought up is
- 25:17Speaker 4: preventing runs is always less expensive than scoring runs, right,
- 25:21Speaker 4: So in a bullpen can be a big part of that.
- 25:24Speaker 4: And you know, in twenty twenty four, that bullpen that
- 25:27Speaker 4: we had was one of the main reasons, if not
- 25:30Speaker 4: the reason, that we were in playoff contention for so long.
- 25:33Speaker 4: So in that bullpen that they see that they have now,
- 25:36Speaker 4: you know, with your we'll just assume you're not there.
- 25:39Speaker 4: You know, who's that guy that kind of steps up
- 25:41Speaker 4: as that veteran leadership because I feel like you, Kittridge,
- 25:45Speaker 4: you guys had some guys down there in twenty four
- 25:47Speaker 4: that really led that group, and then you led that
- 25:49Speaker 4: group you know, last year until the trade deadline. But
- 25:51Speaker 4: who are those guys that can kind of step into
- 25:53Speaker 4: that role assuming they don't bring somebody in and keep
- 25:56Speaker 4: that to be a strength of this year's team.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think we see how teams use
- 26:01Speaker 3: bullpens now, and you know, most good teams, I feel like,
- 26:05Speaker 3: have you know, two closers, so to call it, especially
- 26:07Speaker 3: in the playoffs. You know, you see how quick triggers
- 26:10Speaker 3: are for starters and you know, but for the Cardinals,
- 26:12Speaker 3: I think, you know, it's got to be Jojo And
- 26:15Speaker 3: even though Riley's a little less time wise in the
- 26:18Speaker 3: big leagues. You know, he's a little bit older and
- 26:20Speaker 3: seasoned as a baseball player. So I think those two
- 26:22Speaker 3: guys could be someone, you know, they could lead that
- 26:24Speaker 3: lead that bullpen. But I think the easy choice is Jojo,
- 26:28Speaker 3: just because he's he's been around so long and you
- 26:31Speaker 3: know his pitched well, you know his whole career, and
- 26:35Speaker 3: you know a lot of young guys are going to
- 26:36Speaker 3: get more opportunities there if they don't sign guys you
- 26:38Speaker 3: know which you know, I think it would be a
- 26:40Speaker 3: good thing to see, you know, what they have and
- 26:42Speaker 3: see what those guys are capable of at that level.
- 26:45Speaker 4: What what did Sorry, I'm stepping in here at Jim.
- 26:47Speaker 4: You did a two part earlier, so I'm gonna go
- 26:49Speaker 4: ahead and be back all up here, and then I
- 26:53Speaker 4: really want to ask that golf here. We're going to
- 26:55Speaker 4: run out of time with Ryan, but I really want
- 26:56Speaker 4: to know where he's golfing today. So this might be
- 26:58Speaker 4: the last question, Jim.
- 26:59Speaker 2: So you can do two parts. You can do two parts.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Thanks, thanks, thanks for that, you know, permission to do that. Riley,
- 27:07Speaker 4: what was what was a big shift that you saw
- 27:10Speaker 4: in Riley? You know when I was in with the
- 27:12Speaker 4: Rays kind of working back. You know, I saw him
- 27:14Speaker 4: throw against this. In my word, it was like it
- 27:17Speaker 4: was kind of a different guy. What what did you
- 27:19Speaker 4: see from him when he got back up there, and
- 27:21Speaker 4: what's going to make him so effective going forward?
- 27:23Speaker 3: You think, Yeah, I think just trusting his stuff in
- 27:26Speaker 3: the zone. You know, I think that's the hardest thing
- 27:28Speaker 3: to do in the big leagues, you know, even the
- 27:30Speaker 3: best guys to get out. You know, we talk about
- 27:31Speaker 3: all the time in pitches meetings it's seven out of
- 27:34Speaker 3: ten times, you know, first pitch strikes or you know
- 27:36Speaker 3: the key. And I think when he really bought into
- 27:39Speaker 3: just attacking guys and you know, trusting his stuff in
- 27:42Speaker 3: his zone is when he really saw a big jump.
- 27:44Speaker 3: And you know, confidence, as the picture, can take you
- 27:46Speaker 3: a long way, especially in the bullpen, good or bad,
- 27:50Speaker 3: you know, and when you have those bad games, it's
- 27:53Speaker 3: you know, hard to sometimes get past those. And I
- 27:56Speaker 3: think when you rattle off a few good ones and
- 27:58Speaker 3: you can kind of see, like how how your success happens,
- 28:02Speaker 3: I think is a big way and a big contributor
- 28:04Speaker 3: to success overall for a player. And you know, I
- 28:07Speaker 3: think this year, you know, I would watch Cardinals games
- 28:09Speaker 3: when I left, and you know, he's pitching in close
- 28:11Speaker 3: games and you know, just like you said, look like
- 28:13Speaker 3: a completely different picture and confident, and you know, it's fun,
- 28:16Speaker 3: fun to watch guys, you know, make that leap and
- 28:19Speaker 3: you know, just to really compete out there and just
- 28:21Speaker 3: to lay it all on the line.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Ask about golf, Jim, Jim, go ahead, Oh did you
- 28:28Speaker 4: have another? You have another question?
- 28:29Speaker 3: Jim?
- 28:31Speaker 2: No, So I was gonna let you ask golf.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Then I was going to close out with one and
- 28:35Speaker 1: we'd wrap this whole puppy up.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Okay, all right, great, So obviously, hell's you got a
- 28:40Speaker 4: You got the hat that has the upside down words
- 28:42Speaker 4: on it, so you're obviously going golfing. It says birdies
- 28:44Speaker 4: for those that can't read upside down. So uh, one,
- 28:47Speaker 4: hope you score a lot of birdies today. It'd be great.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Uh where are you going golfing? Tell us to tell
- 28:53Speaker 4: us the schedule. We already know that your cafeated ready
- 28:55Speaker 4: to go, But where are we going golfing today?
- 28:58Speaker 3: Yeah? I think I'm gonna go to bel Air today
- 29:00Speaker 3: to start off with, and then maybe try to sneak
- 29:02Speaker 3: on the LA Country Club as well, So.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Sure that's the place you can sneak on. So he
- 29:08Speaker 4: I wouldn't try to sneak on to LA Country Club.
- 29:11Speaker 3: We might pull some strings and get in. Uh that's
- 29:14Speaker 3: bad phrasing there. But yeah, I think today is going
- 29:18Speaker 3: to be complete golf, maybe thirty six holes and you know,
- 29:21Speaker 3: we'll see if we can't score some birdies.
- 29:24Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna do what Kyle was doing early.
- 29:28Speaker 1: This isn't a baseball related question. By the way, Kyle,
- 29:31Speaker 1: you were great. He also he's the guy that booked
- 29:34Speaker 1: Elsley for today, So kudos to Kyle Gibson. But we're
- 29:38Speaker 1: talking about LA right now. We're talking about the big Apple.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I want to know what you miss about Saint Louis.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 3: I think I just always explained to people it kind
- 29:48Speaker 3: of feels like home for me. You know, I grew
- 29:51Speaker 3: up in a small town and you know, you grow
- 29:53Speaker 3: up there and and get there at the twenty, you know,
- 29:56Speaker 3: four year old kid, and you know I left at
- 29:58Speaker 3: thirty one. So what you a lot and seeing a
- 30:00Speaker 3: lot there and it just feels like a big farm
- 30:02Speaker 3: town to me. You know, there's not much traffic, really,
