- 0:00There's a dynamic that frequently occurs when an
- 0:03individual starts to actively take up the yogic path at a
- 0:08certain stage of development. The need to bring peace into the
- 0:12being and the need for a calm, quiet energy to support the
- 0:16practice of meditation may take center stage.
- 0:21At that point, the seeker may take steps to minimize external
- 0:25contacts, create a quiet space and increase the time spent in
- 0:30meditation and study. The active impulsive
- 0:34participation in external affairs recedes.
- 0:39This tendency, if it is a short term action and particularly if
- 0:44it remains dynamic and focused, can be extremely useful for the
- 0:48seeker. In fact, for many it may be a
- 0:51necessary stage. The danger arises if the
- 0:55individual either becomes so habituated to the attitude of
- 0:59withdrawal from an act of life that he becomes imbalanced and
- 1:04unable to withstand the pressures of life in the world,
- 1:08or else that the Sutwick impulse that led to this focus in the
- 1:121st place gets mixed with talus and turns into a form of
- 1:16indolence or somnolence. In such a case, the individual
- 1:21winds up opening himself to all manner of thoughts, impulses,
- 1:26feelings, emotions and desires that enter through the less
- 1:31vigilant and less conscious state of the Temasek energy.
- 1:37It is very difficult to maintain dynamic and focused meditation
- 1:41constantly for long periods of time.
- 1:44When the concentration slips, it allows the mind to wander,
- 1:49various impulsions to arise, and creates a form of mental fatigue
- 1:54that becomes a field for these opposing thoughts and tendencies
- 1:58to rise up. Similarly, the vital nature has
- 2:03an inherent bias towards activity and excitement.
- 2:06Thus, it treats periods of calm, quiet reflection as unnatural
- 2:12and works to bring some energy to the being.
- 2:15This energy is not always helpful to the sadhna, of
- 2:19course, so it can lead to undesirable consequences,
- 2:24Sriorobindo writes. Quote.
- 2:27It is perhaps that the attitude that you took of going on with
- 2:31the calm within and slowly changing what had to be changed,
- 2:35postponing certain things for the future, though not a wrong
- 2:39attitude in itself, made you somewhat LAX, allowing things to
- 2:44play on the surface, desires, et cetera, which should have been
- 2:49kept in check. This resolution may have opened
- 2:52the way for the old movements to rise through this part, which
- 2:55was not yet ready to change at all, and the hostile forces,
- 2:59finding you off your guard, took the opportunity to push the
- 3:03attack home. They are always vigilant for an
- 3:07opportunity, and there must be a sufficient vigilance on the
- 3:11sodic side to refuse it to them. End Quote Reference Sri
