- 0:01Hey everyone, this is friendly back with another episode on the
- 0:05podcast. I'm so happy you're here today
- 0:08and I'm praying that this episode meets you exactly where
- 0:12you are and speaks to you personally.
- 0:15Today we're going to be continuing in Matthew chapter
- 0:1914. And before I even start reading,
- 0:22I just want to invite y'all to ask the Father to help you
- 0:27envision this story more vividly as I'm reading it.
- 0:31To put yourself in the shoes of maybe a spectator or even the
- 0:35disciples in this story because it is a familiar story.
- 0:40Once again, like yesterday's, this is the one of Jesus walking
- 0:44on water. But I just do not want us to
- 0:47become dull to the reality of what a miraculous move and work
- 0:51of God this is just because it's familiar.
- 0:54So I'm going to be starting in verse 22 and go through verse
- 0:5833. Immediately.
- 1:01Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of
- 1:04Him to the other side while He dismissed the crowd.
- 1:08After he had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by
- 1:11himself to pray. Later that night, He was there
- 1:14alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from
- 1:18land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
- 1:23Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them walking on the lake.
- 1:27When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were
- 1:30terrified. It's a ghost, they said, and
- 1:33cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to
- 1:37them, Take courage. It is.
- 1:39I do not be afraid, Lord, if it's you, Peter replied, Tell me
- 1:45to come to you on the water. Come, he said.
- 1:49Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and
- 1:53came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was
- 1:57afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, Lord, save me.
- 2:02Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
- 2:06You of little faith, he said, Why did you doubt?
- 2:10And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
- 2:13Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying truly,
- 2:17you are the Son of God. Alright, so this story is
- 2:24specifically very just surreal to me.
- 2:29I had the privilege of getting to go to Israel in August and so
- 2:34I was on the Sea of Galilee and it is just completely painted
- 2:39the picture in my head as I read this.
- 2:41But it is so real and it's so powerful, and there's so many
- 2:46things that stand out to me here, but just a few of the
- 2:50things. The first one is we we see Jesus
- 2:54prioritize time alone with his Father.
- 2:56He dismisses the crowds and he goes up to the mountain by
- 2:59himself to pray. And this is so humbling if you
- 3:03think about it, that Jesus is the Son of God, but he needed
- 3:07intentional quiet time with his Father.
- 3:09So how much more do we and in our culture, not just culture,
- 3:15but with technology, like we have such access to calling
- 3:19people and catching up. And I believe we need to be
- 3:22rooted in community. Bible studies are amazing and
- 3:25it's important. Podcasts are good, even this
- 3:28one. Like I'm saying this as you're
- 3:30listening to one. But none of these things are
- 3:33meant to replace personal time alone with God.
- 3:36And my desire for this podcast is for it to be supplemental,
- 3:39not a substitute. So I just want to pose the
- 3:42question for you to reflect on. Are you spending time letting
- 3:47God speak to you personally? Are you creating space in your
- 3:51schedule to clear out noise and to simply sit with him?
- 3:56And so next, I just love how Jesus responds to the disciples
- 4:01when they're fearful. They're terrified.
- 4:04They're literally convinced that they're seeing a ghost.
- 4:07But Jesus does not respond with frustration or disappointment.
- 4:12He's not passive. He doesn't say you should know
- 4:15better by now or do you even know who you're talking to?
- 4:20He responds with care and with tenderness.
- 4:23And this is such a reminder of God's heart toward us.
- 4:27God is love, and Scripture tells us that perfect love casts out
- 4:32all fear. So I just want to highlight that
- 4:37if the voices that you're hearing in your head are
- 4:40producing fear or shame or they're discouraging y'all, that
- 4:45is not the voice of your Father. That's the enemy.
- 4:49He wants to try to trick you into believing certain things,
- 4:53and it's all lies. He is the father of lies, but
- 4:57God's voice, he brings peace. He brings truth and reassurance.
- 5:02Even when he's calling us to step into something
- 5:05uncomfortable, He is still there to encourage us and to walk
- 5:09alongside us. So now let's transition into
- 5:13Peter. And I think that Peter often
- 5:17gets a bad rap, but truthfully, I really admire him here.
- 5:22He was not testing God, and that's something that Scripture
- 5:25is clear we are not to do. He was the one who was willing
- 5:29to step out in faith. So I think this reveals an
- 5:33important question for us. Do we have an active faith or a
- 5:37passive faith? Here's the difference.
- 5:40Active faith moves toward Jesus, but passive faith waits for
- 5:44Jesus to come meet us where we are, when it's convenient, when
- 5:49it's comfortable. But Peter, he was available.
- 5:52He was prepared. He was willing to move toward
- 5:55Jesus. And we know the moment that his
- 5:59focus shifts, it says in the story that it's when he notices
- 6:04the wind and the waves around him that he starts to sink.
- 6:08And I think that this is the part where it can hit really
- 6:12close to home for a lot of us. We begin to sink when our focus.
- 6:17It drifts off of Jesus and onto our circumstances.
- 6:22It's when we fixate on what's going wrong, when we start to
- 6:25compare ourselves to the people around us, maybe what they have,
- 6:29what we don't have, or where they are in a certain place in
- 6:32life. Strong faith.
- 6:34It depends on where our eyes are fixed.
- 6:37And I don't know if you all have heard the song Eyes Locked on
- 6:40the King by Abby Gamboa. It is one of my absolute
- 6:44favorites. So if you haven't heard it, go
- 6:46listen to it after this. But it just emphasizes us
- 6:50keeping our eyes locked on Jesus.
- 6:53And that's the reminder here that we are to focus on Jesus
- 6:57and his power, not on what we're lacking.
- 7:00So if you've realized maybe you're listening and you're
- 7:03like, shoot, my focus has drifted.
- 7:06If you kind of feel like you're sinking, y'all just reach out
- 7:10your hand to Jesus. It's when Peter cried out, Lord
- 7:13save me. And it was suddenly immediately
- 7:17that Jesus reached out his hand for him.
- 7:19There was no hesitation, there was no lecture.
- 7:22He was there to rescue him. So I want to ask you this.
- 7:26What do you reach for when you feel uncomfortable?
- 7:30Is it money? Is it substances?
- 7:33Is it control? For me, I'll say personally,
- 7:38it's control and specifically my schedule.
- 7:41I like to try to control the things that I feel like I can
- 7:47control, but that is just something that I've really had
- 7:52to bring to the Lord and ask Him to make me more sensitive to
- 7:56that and to recognize it so that I can surrender it to Him when I
- 8:01start to gravitate towards that. So finally, I just want us to
- 8:05notice what happens when Jesus enters the boat.
- 8:08The wind dies down. Christ's presence, it brings
- 8:12peace, not chaos. And so even when we're in
- 8:16difficult situations, you can know that you're fully
- 8:19surrendered to Jesus when there's still peace because his
- 8:23his peace is unexplainable. It says in Scripture that it
- 8:27surpasses all understanding, but it guards us.
- 8:31And our only fitting response to that peace is worship.
- 8:35Just like they did in the boat. And the disciples say, truly,
- 8:38you are the Son of God. So let's just sit with that.
- 8:42I want to pray over us really quick and just thank the Father
- 8:47for this story. So Jesus, thank you for meeting
- 8:51us in our fear. You meet us with love and with
- 8:55patience. Thank you that you don't shame
- 8:57us when we doubt, but you reach out to us with kindness and
- 9:02compassion when we cry out to you.
- 9:05Would you help us to prioritize our time alone with you?
- 9:08We know there are just so many moving parts in this world, but
- 9:13would you teach us how to quiet out the noise?
- 9:15How to really slow down and recognize your voice, and also
- 9:21to be able to recognize the enemy's voice and to be able to
- 9:24distinguish what you say of us and to believe your truth.
- 9:29Lord, we give you our fear. The fear that we know is fear,
- 9:35and maybe even the fear that we may not realize that we're
- 9:39caring right now. We surrender our need for
- 9:42control, our distractions, and the things that we often go to
- 9:49instead of You, Lord, when we begin to sink, would You remind
- 9:53us so clearly that You're close, that you're near, and that You
- 9:58are willing and that You're more than enough?
- 10:01Keep our eyes focused on You, Jesus, no matter what is going
- 10:06on in the world around us, no matter what other people are
- 10:10going through, Lord, just keep our eyes locked on you, King
- 10:15Jesus. And then we say every day of our
- 10:17lives that truly you are the Son of God.
- 10:22In Jesus name we pray, Amen. Well, thank you for listening
- 10:26today. I hope that this blesses you as
- 10:29it did me. And I'm so excited to see y'all
- 10:32in the next episode.
