Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Would we send our troops to fight the Houthis?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It's possible that our Defense Force could send personnel to
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Middle East to help stop the Huthis. They're the
- 0:05Speaker 1: group in Yemen. We've spoken about them before. They are
- 0:08Speaker 1: backed by Iran. The are the ones currently firing drones
- 0:11Speaker 1: and cruise missiles at Saudi tankers. They are the ones,
- 0:15Speaker 1: along with the Revolutionary Garden Iran, pushing up the price
- 0:17Speaker 1: of oil this morning. They are the ones blocking the
- 0:20Speaker 1: B route for getting crude out of the Gulf. The
- 0:23Speaker 1: other reason we'll probably pay more to fill up our
- 0:25Speaker 1: cars and trucks next week. Like most other Western countries,
- 0:29Speaker 1: we haven't really touched Trump's war in a military sense,
- 0:32Speaker 1: done anything really about the Strait of Hormuz. But the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Red Sea is different because we've been there before. Two
- 0:38Speaker 1: years ago. You might remember this, Judith Collins sent six
- 0:41Speaker 1: MZDF personnel specifically to help the US lead coalition that
- 0:47Speaker 1: was trying to stop these exact type of attacks. Winston
- 0:51Speaker 1: Peters said at the time their tacks were illegal against
- 0:55Speaker 1: our values. We want freedom of navigation, all that good stuff,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and quote continue to affect New Zealand's economy. You would
- 1:02Speaker 1: have to say, given what we're witnessing this week and
- 1:05Speaker 1: in the last twenty four hours that nothing's changed. That
- 1:08Speaker 1: deployment was scheduled to end at the beginning of twenty
- 1:11Speaker 1: twenty five. After it was extended in June, we had
- 1:15Speaker 1: Chris penk who's that the new Defenseman has to come
- 1:17Speaker 1: out an extend day deployment to the Middle East by
- 1:19Speaker 1: at least two years of up to fourteen personnel for
- 1:22Speaker 1: quote maritime security. The question now is whether we will
- 1:27Speaker 1: be sending more and doing more. For more from Early
- 1:30Speaker 1: Edition with Ryan Bridge, listen live to news Talks. It'd
- 1:33Speaker 1: be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast on iHeartRadio.
