- 2:32Speaker 4: But as we've done for the last couple of weeks,
- 2:34Speaker 4: let's started the newsroom with Jeff Jenkins. Jeff, good morning,
- 2:37Speaker 4: Welcome to the show, with the updates on the White
- 2:40Speaker 4: Feather Lance trial or get into the final maybe maybe
- 2:43Speaker 4: final hours here.
- 2:44Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, very possible. So what's happening this morning is
- 2:48Speaker 6: that the jury instructions are going to be read, so
- 2:52Speaker 6: everybody's got all the testimony and final testimony came yesterday
- 2:55Speaker 6: from doctor David Clayman, local doctor here, and he was
- 2:59Speaker 6: a rebuttal witness for the state. He reviewed all the
- 3:03Speaker 6: information about the kids and the parents White Feather and Lance,
- 3:06Speaker 6: and about their behavior and he had opinions on their behavior,
- 3:09Speaker 6: the behavior of the parents, and so he testified as
- 3:12Speaker 6: to that to the jury. And so what's going to
- 3:15Speaker 6: happen this morning. There's really three things left. One is
- 3:18Speaker 6: the judge, Mary Claireakers, will read the jury instructions to
- 3:22Speaker 6: the jury. So you know, there are twenty counts each,
- 3:26Speaker 6: so a judge reads all of the counts. So those
- 3:29Speaker 6: counts will be read. And even though they're on trial together,
- 3:33Speaker 6: they are charged separately. So you could find you know,
- 3:38Speaker 6: just thinking of scenario here, you know, you can find
- 3:40Speaker 6: White Feather guilty of something that Lance you may not
- 3:43Speaker 6: think they're guilty of, you know, so the jury jury
- 3:46Speaker 6: or they could find them guilty of everything or not
- 3:48Speaker 6: guilty of everything. So there's a lot of choices there
- 3:50Speaker 6: for the jury. But they will be read the instructions.
- 3:54Speaker 6: You know, what they're allowed to do, what they're not
- 3:56Speaker 6: allowed to do, and so the judge will do that
- 3:58Speaker 6: and then there will be closing argument months So the
- 4:01Speaker 6: prosecution will give its closing argument, this is why you
- 4:03Speaker 6: should convict. The defense will give its closing argument, this
- 4:06Speaker 6: is why you should find not guilty. And then the
- 4:09Speaker 6: jury will start its deliberation. So you know, you never
- 4:13Speaker 6: can predict really what a jury is going to do.
- 4:16Speaker 6: You know, they may they make, you know, make some
- 4:19Speaker 6: split decisions on some things. They may find them all guilty,
- 4:21Speaker 6: may find them not guilty of everything. So we'll have
- 4:24Speaker 6: to wait and see. But yeah, we definitely are in
- 4:26Speaker 6: the final stages here. I would say, probably good bet.
- 4:29Speaker 6: The jury might get the case after lunch. It may
- 4:31Speaker 6: begin deliberating after lunch. May maybe, outside chance, they could
- 4:35Speaker 6: get it before length, but probably after lunch. She'll give
- 4:37Speaker 6: them a break at lunch, they bring them back in
- 4:39Speaker 6: to deliberate, and we'll see how far they get. They
- 4:41Speaker 6: reach a verdict today or go into tomorrow.
- 4:43Speaker 4: All right, And of course we'll have complete coverage. We
- 4:45Speaker 4: have our reporters in the courtroom and some riveting audio.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I was listening to Jeff when I was driving in
- 4:52Speaker 4: this morning, some of the audio that's come out of
- 4:54Speaker 4: this trial. I know Morgan Pemberton has been covering it.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I think it's Morgan's men cat skeltered. Yeah, some some
- 5:00Speaker 4: rivety notaty particular from doctor Clayman yesterday. I found that
- 5:04Speaker 4: of interest.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, and his I mean, his testimony was I mean,
- 5:09Speaker 6: if I can just boil it down, you know, he
- 5:11Speaker 6: just basically said they were bad parents. You know, he
- 5:13Speaker 6: said they at times he from the evidence that he reviewed,
- 5:18Speaker 6: you know, he believes, yeah, that they may have tried
- 5:20Speaker 6: to do some right things, but they didn't follow through.
- 5:22Speaker 6: And he cited some examples about the kids being outside
- 5:26Speaker 6: in t shirts in winter weather and forced to work
- 5:29Speaker 6: and just and he went over some of those things
- 5:31Speaker 6: and just said it was, you know, it's abusive neglect behavior.
- 5:36Speaker 6: Kind of a textbook for that. So we'll see, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 6: we'll see how the jury takes that. And and you know,
- 5:42Speaker 6: that is the last witness, so that's kind of left
- 5:44Speaker 6: on the jury, right, and and so the jury, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 6: what a jury does is they don't you know, they
- 5:49Speaker 6: don't they're really not allowed to take notes or anything.
- 5:51Speaker 6: They just have to recall what the testimony is and
- 5:53Speaker 6: make a decision from that.
- 5:55Speaker 4: All right. Of course we'll have coverage on air and online.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Jeff appreciated man. Thanks a lot, all right, Jeff Jenkins
- 6:00Speaker 4: in the newsroom. It's nine thirteen, the day violand show
- 6:02Speaker 4: in five. Any life is bright to you partly by

- 6:12Speaker 4: or dining in at Hustinspizza dot com. Ashley offered a
- 6:14Speaker 4: glance from the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Coming up
- 6:16Speaker 4: a little bit later on al So, Johnny Ferira from
- 6:18Speaker 4: Kenawa County Schools. I want to welcome in one of
- 6:20Speaker 4: our fine sponsors of the show. They are good buddy
- 6:23Speaker 4: Josh from Jute Security Systems. Josh, good morning, welcome to
- 6:26Speaker 4: the Showy, good morning, thank you. And you know I
- 6:28Speaker 4: told you off the air. I'm suffering from a little
- 6:30Speaker 4: bit of a cold. Don't feel bad. It's something like that.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I'm not contagious, just a little bit of a cold
- 6:33Speaker 4: and sign of single on. So you may very well
- 6:36Speaker 4: have to take over the show today, all right. I've
- 6:38Speaker 4: done this in the past with people. One time in particular,
- 6:41Speaker 4: I was talking and I remember my good friend Robbie
- 6:43Speaker 4: Queen from the CAMC Foundation. I was doing an interview
- 6:46Speaker 4: with Robbie and my voice completely went out in the
- 6:49Speaker 4: middle of the show and so Robbie had to finish
- 6:51Speaker 4: the show for me. So just no, you may have
- 6:53Speaker 4: to talk.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Well, hope it holds on until act gets here at all.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Right, all right, so you know, if you guys sponsor
- 7:00Speaker 4: the show, it's jute joot. I always spell it out,
- 7:03Speaker 4: you know every time. Some people know what it is.
- 7:05Speaker 4: But for those who may not know what exactly is
- 7:08Speaker 4: jute security, what do you folks do?
- 7:10Speaker 7: So we are a security and automation business, so we
- 7:13Speaker 7: do all residential commercial security. So we do cameras, automation,
- 7:19Speaker 7: smart home, different things like that as well with it.
- 7:22Speaker 4: And home and business security systems. Josh have really come
- 7:25Speaker 4: a long way from the simple old cameras, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: the cameras that look like you could be filming you know,
- 7:32Speaker 4: major Hollywood production with them or TV news or whatever,
- 7:35Speaker 4: from being mounted to what they are now. This is
- 7:38Speaker 4: the this is the high tech world, man, absolutely all right.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Expound upon that.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Yes, it all comes into an app that you can
- 7:45Speaker 7: control from your phone. So we partner with Alarm Dot com.
- 7:48Speaker 7: They're the largest security provider in the nation. So it's
- 7:51Speaker 7: a really really simple app. And I feel like people
- 7:54Speaker 7: get worried when you start talking about that. You know,
- 7:56Speaker 7: with security and all this techie stuff you can do
- 7:59Speaker 7: with it really is simple. I mean I really try
- 8:02Speaker 7: to stress that to people that truly.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Anybody can do it.
- 8:05Speaker 7: I joke and say a lot that if my parents
- 8:07Speaker 7: can do it, anybody can do it, and you know,
- 8:09Speaker 7: not taking people at all, and they picked it up.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Really, if if your parents are listening right now, you
- 8:13Speaker 4: just got crossed off the Christmas all right? Okay, well
- 8:17Speaker 4: for next year, for your birthday? How's that? How's that?
- 8:19Speaker 4: Give me some of some things that do set it apart?
- 8:23Speaker 4: Like you said, it's an app. Now, So I hire
- 8:26Speaker 4: you guys, you come out to my home or my office,
- 8:29Speaker 4: my business, whatever, because you do residential and commercial and
- 8:32Speaker 4: let's just keep it with home, all right. I hire
- 8:34Speaker 4: you folks to come out to my home. I give
- 8:36Speaker 4: you the call to go on the website or whatever,
- 8:37Speaker 4: and you come to my house. What exactly do you do?
- 8:42Speaker 7: So come in and try to do an in person
- 8:45Speaker 7: talk with you and just see exactly what you want.
- 8:47Speaker 7: I think that That's the thing that I try to
- 8:50Speaker 7: stress the most is it is purely what you want.
- 8:52Speaker 7: You know, we're the professionals there. We have opinions in
- 8:55Speaker 7: different ways that we typically go about doing a certain home.
- 8:58Speaker 7: But I usually tell people, you know, you live here,
- 9:00Speaker 7: you know the home best, You know what you want
- 9:02Speaker 7: to feel secure with, and whatever that makes you feel.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Like is what we go with. Okay, for some reason,
- 9:09Speaker 4: we have a phone ringing. I don't know why there's
- 9:10Speaker 4: a phone ringing in the studio. Is that for you?
- 9:13Speaker 4: We're expecting a phone call? Was okay? All right? I
- 9:16Speaker 4: don't know why the phone's are ringing in the studio,
- 9:18Speaker 4: but anyway, maybe that's my that's my security system going off.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Maybe maybe that's what it is. The thing I like
- 9:24Speaker 4: about what you guys do is that you can go
- 9:29Speaker 4: into somebody's home and you can sit down with them
- 9:31Speaker 4: and explain. As opposed to just go into your local
- 9:33Speaker 4: box store and buying a setup. You pretty much custom
- 9:36Speaker 4: I don't want to say you custom make it because
- 9:37Speaker 4: you're not in the factory, but you custom design what
- 9:40Speaker 4: that particular home or what that what that business needs for.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Because what the major automotive dealership needs is not necessarily
- 9:51Speaker 4: what the flower shop is going to need. When we're
- 9:53Speaker 4: talking about businesses and commercial property, talk about that a
- 9:56Speaker 4: little bit about how you custom make it for the customer.
- 10:00Speaker 7: So there's a lot of different ways that you can
- 10:01Speaker 7: go into it. So it truly is just specific too,
- 10:05Speaker 7: like you said your homewarre business, So there's a lot
- 10:09Speaker 7: of different ways you can set up. For example, we
- 10:12Speaker 7: have one customer that it wanted to save a little
- 10:15Speaker 7: bit of money. They're a commercial customer. We got them
- 10:17Speaker 7: a full camera set up and they wanted to save
- 10:20Speaker 7: some money, so we set them up with more of
- 10:22Speaker 7: a residential style with a Wi Fi camera that it
- 10:25Speaker 7: just records clips at different times. They weren't happy with
- 10:29Speaker 7: how many clips were going into the account there. It
- 10:32Speaker 7: was filling up too fast, so we came back and
- 10:35Speaker 7: offered them an extension onto that and an expansion module
- 10:39Speaker 7: that stored clips a lot longer. So we kind of
- 10:42Speaker 7: upgraded them a little bit to a commercial package while
- 10:44Speaker 7: still saving them some money with everything. So that was
- 10:47Speaker 7: something that customized for them well, and we just really
- 10:50Speaker 7: try to work with you on whatever your needs are there.
- 10:52Speaker 4: We had a text here to the show somebody said
- 10:54Speaker 4: and I know you're not an insurance agent, but can
- 10:57Speaker 4: getting systems like this lower insurance? Absolutely?
- 11:00Speaker 7: Yes, so uh, whenever you are secured with us, we
- 11:03Speaker 7: have a certificate that we send to you. You just
- 11:05Speaker 7: send it into your insurance agent. And not all companies
- 11:09Speaker 7: do it, sure, but typically most Dude, Yeah, they give
- 11:11Speaker 7: you a rebate on your account, or they give you
- 11:13Speaker 7: a discount on your premium or or whatever that is.
- 11:15Speaker 4: It's just amazing to me as we talked, and again
- 11:17Speaker 4: we're talking with the Josh Beam of Jute, how far
- 11:20Speaker 4: this technology has come to it being like you said,
- 11:22Speaker 4: right on, right on your phone right now. And it's
- 11:25Speaker 4: it's not just to keep there's other there are other
- 11:28Speaker 4: reasons to have these security systems other than just keeping
- 11:32Speaker 4: bad guys out. I mean, it's a it's a safety issue.
- 11:35Speaker 4: You want to check on your things at home while
- 11:36Speaker 4: you're not there, not necessarily what you're looking for something bad,
- 11:39Speaker 4: but just you want to you just want to check,
- 11:41Speaker 4: you know, check on your on your dog in the yard,
- 11:43Speaker 4: or whatever the case may be.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Yep, we have package delivery now notifications for some of
- 11:48Speaker 7: our doorbell cameras. A lot of husbands like to see that.
- 11:51Speaker 7: See when all these packages are coming in together, their
- 11:53Speaker 7: wife a hard time or something so different.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Things like that.
- 11:56Speaker 7: You can see if somebody would have come up to
- 11:58Speaker 7: your porch and taken the package off, you know, things
- 12:00Speaker 7: like that, and so a lot of people wait to
- 12:02Speaker 7: get a security system until something has happened. But what
- 12:05Speaker 7: we try to tell people now is, you know, it
- 12:07Speaker 7: does help your insurance, it does give you a discount
- 12:10Speaker 7: on those kinds of things. There's a lot of pluses
- 12:12Speaker 7: to it, and you just have the peace of mind
- 12:14Speaker 7: of never having to worry about something going wrong and
- 12:16Speaker 7: you know, not being secured.
- 12:18Speaker 4: What's the best way to contact you if people want
- 12:20Speaker 4: a consultation or they just want to discuss this further,
- 12:23Speaker 4: what's the best thing to do.
- 12:24Speaker 7: So you can reach out to us at a protective
- 12:26Speaker 7: info at protected by jute dot com or visit our
- 12:30Speaker 7: website at protected by jute dot com.
- 12:31Speaker 4: All right, Josh's always a pleasure to have you on
- 12:34Speaker 4: the show. You know, when you make comments like husbands
- 12:36Speaker 4: like to keep an eye on their wives and what
- 12:37Speaker 4: they're ordering, you know somebody's going to say, well, husbands
- 12:39Speaker 4: order things too, So yeah, just so you know, I'm
- 12:42Speaker 4: trying to help you man, I'm trying to cover that
- 12:43Speaker 4: up for you, Josh. Being from Jute, it's protected by

- 17:10Speaker 4: How are you. I'm doing fine. Thank you for being here.
- 17:12Speaker 4: You sound awful energetic this morning.
- 17:15Speaker 12: Hey, we are ready for the twenty five twenty six
- 17:19Speaker 12: school year, and I'm here with my colleague Jennifer Lily.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Doesn't it Hi, Jennifer, good morning. I don't know whether
- 17:24Speaker 4: she can hear me, and I'll be good morning, Jennifer,
- 17:26Speaker 4: good morning, all right. Thank you both for being here today.
- 17:30Speaker 4: What to do and what's kind of taken from the
- 17:32Speaker 4: broad sands, and we'll kind of whittle down a little bit.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Jennifer and Johnny talk about what is needed for parents
- 17:41Speaker 4: if they want to get their kids signed up.
- 17:43Speaker 12: Okay, we are going live with our online application on
- 17:48Speaker 12: February third, twenty twenty five. They'll need to go onto
- 17:54Speaker 12: our online application site, which is at k c F
- 18:01Speaker 12: dot pre school steps dot org and on that page
- 18:10Speaker 12: when you pull that up, there will be an application
- 18:13Speaker 12: for the twenty five twenty six school year. Now, we
- 18:17Speaker 12: encourage parents to complete that application and the information for
- 18:21Speaker 12: the documents needed will be there as well. Also, we
- 18:27Speaker 12: caution parents not to do the twenty four to twenty
- 18:30Speaker 12: five application, which is the current year, as it is
- 18:35Speaker 12: still up on the p steps website. So we don't
- 18:38Speaker 12: want people to do that and then not get enrolled
- 18:42Speaker 12: because we don't have their application.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Yeah, so make sure that you definitely choose the right year,
- 18:48Speaker 4: and we'll give out that website several more times because
- 18:50Speaker 4: it's kind of difficult but to remember, but we'll give
- 18:53Speaker 4: it out several several more times during the interviews. Now,
- 18:55Speaker 4: I understand that you're setting up what's being called I
- 18:58Speaker 4: think collaboration sites talk about that a little bit.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Our collaborative fits are actually and we have pre pocasforms
- 19:07Speaker 3: in daycare or church faith, faith and fight such as.
- 19:11Speaker 13: You know that for students who.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Need child care that most of those offer before or
- 19:18Speaker 3: after care and and we have those throughout the county.
- 19:23Speaker 12: And those are really important, especially for families. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 12: now we have a lot of working families, so our
- 19:31Speaker 12: collaborative sites do offer that after care piece. And then
- 19:36Speaker 12: you know preschools Monday through Thursday and most of them
- 19:40Speaker 12: offer that Friday care as well. So the collaborative sites,
- 19:44Speaker 12: I would encourage families to really think about their needs
- 19:49Speaker 12: and if they need after care, you know, to apply
- 19:52Speaker 12: to one of our collaborative sites across Knaw County as
- 19:56Speaker 12: they will offer that service and you know, keeps students
- 20:00Speaker 12: in the same building through preschool which is free, and
- 20:05Speaker 12: then the aftercare portion there would be a charge that
- 20:08Speaker 12: would be worked out with the collaborative site.

- 20:33Speaker 4: boxes that they've got, I was reading about that earlier
- 20:36Speaker 4: this morning. All right, So guess one of the most
- 20:37Speaker 4: frequently asked questions that you get from parents, grandparents, guardians, whatever,
- 20:42Speaker 4: what to give us some of the FAQs as they.
- 20:45Speaker 12: Say, okay, probably one of the most important aspects or questions.
- 20:51Speaker 12: Students must be four years old by June thirtieth of
- 20:56Speaker 12: twenty twenty five. That is a law enacted by our
- 21:02Speaker 12: state legislature in approximately twenty eighteen. So if your child
- 21:08Speaker 12: turns four on June, I'm sorry, on July first, they
- 21:13Speaker 12: do not qualify for preschool in West Virginia and unless
- 21:18Speaker 12: there is a developmental delay or so forth, so that
- 21:23Speaker 12: date is very important. We get a lot of phone
- 21:26Speaker 12: calls from parents, you know who are grandparents whose children
- 21:30Speaker 12: do turn four in July, And unfortunately, because the legislature
- 21:35Speaker 12: changed that law, we have to abide by that so
- 21:39Speaker 12: four years old by June thirtieth of twenty twenty five.
- 21:44Speaker 12: The other questions we get, Yes, our program is free
- 21:47Speaker 12: throughout the day for the time frame that students are
- 21:51Speaker 12: in kennaw Any school's preschool as well as the collaboratives
- 21:55Speaker 12: and those basically run between seven fifteen and two fifteen
- 22:00Speaker 12: somewhere in that ballpark for each of our settings. Also, lunch,
- 22:06Speaker 12: a breakfast, lunch, and a snack are provided daily and
- 22:09Speaker 12: that of course is free of charge. There are occasions
- 22:13Speaker 12: when we offer free bussing. That is a question that
- 22:16Speaker 12: many parents and grandparents do have because they need that
- 22:20Speaker 12: bus to provide the transportation to get their children to school.
- 22:25Speaker 12: One of the other big questions we do not have
- 22:28Speaker 12: attendance areas in pre school, meaning if you work downtown
- 22:34Speaker 12: Charleston and you live in Clindon, and it may be
- 22:37Speaker 12: more beneficial to find a location in downtown Charleston for
- 22:40Speaker 12: preschool than having to fight to get back to Clindon
- 22:45Speaker 12: and by two fifteen or so forth. So we do
- 22:47Speaker 12: offer that need that parents can choose the best location
- 22:53Speaker 12: that suits them and for their child.
- 22:56Speaker 4: That's interesting and that's and Johnny, I appreciate you pointing
- 22:58Speaker 4: that out because sometimes that can be an issue in
- 23:01Speaker 4: other schools with the residency requirements. So what you're saying is, again,
- 23:04Speaker 4: if I have a child or grandchild and I and
- 23:08Speaker 4: the example that you use, I live in Clinton and
- 23:11Speaker 4: but my office, my wife's office, whatever, is in downtown Charleston,
- 23:14Speaker 4: then they can just go to that. Well, they don't
- 23:16Speaker 4: necessarily have to have to fend for themselves by going
- 23:18Speaker 4: to the one in clin whatever.
- 23:20Speaker 12: And again that would be beneficial for those families to
- 23:24Speaker 12: apply for preschool in the collaborative site, and that way
- 23:29Speaker 12: they don't have to worry about, you know, the after
- 23:32Speaker 12: care piece that their child will remain at our collaborative
- 23:36Speaker 12: site from eight o'clock in the morning until you know,
- 23:39Speaker 12: five point thirty in the evening when the parents are
- 23:41Speaker 12: off work to pick them up, and there's you know,
- 23:44Speaker 12: the child isn't being transported from school a to a
- 23:48Speaker 12: collaborative site. They're already there and safe and sound, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 12: for after school.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Completely understand what kind of numbers guys are we looking
- 23:57Speaker 4: at in Kanon County. How many kids are involved in
- 23:59Speaker 4: these programs?
- 24:00Speaker 12: Oh gosh, we currently are right under fourteen hundred and
- 24:06Speaker 12: that's a pretty tremendous number. We uh, and hence is
- 24:10Speaker 12: one of the reasons why we we don't have room
- 24:13Speaker 12: for those kids that missed the cutoff date. Unfortunately, we
- 24:17Speaker 12: you know, we are providing services for those kids that
- 24:20Speaker 12: make the cutoff date of the June thirtieth of the
- 24:23Speaker 12: school year. And you know, each year it does fluctuate
- 24:29Speaker 12: a little bit. We look at different population trends in
- 24:33Speaker 12: the areas around Kannak County and as we know, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 12: their populations change, people move and so forth, So you know,
- 24:42Speaker 12: we take all of that into consideration, but we really
- 24:45Speaker 12: are staying right around the thirteen eighty three to fourteen
- 24:48Speaker 12: hundred mark, and fourteen oh two was our pre COVID numbers,
- 24:52Speaker 12: so we are we're right there.
- 24:55Speaker 4: And the reason I wanted to bring that up is
- 24:56Speaker 4: because you know, you we hear a lot about public
- 24:58Speaker 4: schools around a Ma America that some of the numbers
- 25:01Speaker 4: are declining, parents are choosing other options. But it sounds
- 25:04Speaker 4: like that your numbers have remained guys pretty steady.
- 25:07Speaker 13: Yes, I mean, we.
- 25:11Speaker 12: We've stayed really steadfast with our numbers. As in pre
- 25:16Speaker 12: school we were not seeing the trends at other grade
- 25:20Speaker 12: levels and or counties and so forth are seeing with
- 25:23Speaker 12: pre school and we're very fortunate for that.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Give us that website again for more information because it
- 25:30Speaker 4: can be kind of difficult there. You can probably google
- 25:32Speaker 4: it as well, but just give me your just to
- 25:35Speaker 4: give it. Give us that website again, guys.
- 25:37Speaker 3: It's kses dot pre school steps dot org.
- 25:44Speaker 4: All right, and the deadline to get the kids registered again.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Is well, it opened up on February. In this point,
- 25:53Speaker 3: we don't actually have a deadline, but the sooner you
- 25:56Speaker 3: do the application, the better the chance of getting to
- 25:59Speaker 3: your first pre school.
- 26:00Speaker 4: That would have been a better way for me to
- 26:02Speaker 4: phrase it. I'm to apologize. It opens up again here
- 26:04Speaker 4: real soon. Hey, guys, I appreciate you being here. Best luck.
- 26:08Speaker 4: You're doing great work out there. We'll talk against us
- 26:09Speaker 4: and anything else. Give us a yell.
- 26:11Speaker 12: Okay, okay, mister Allen, have a great day as well.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Johnny Ferira and Jennifer Lily again from Canawah County Schools.
- 26:17Speaker 4: I find that interesting that and maybe maybe parents aren't.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I don't say they're not quite as concerned. That's not
- 26:23Speaker 4: the way to put it, but they don't seem to
- 26:25Speaker 4: have the issues with numbers going down with the little kids,
- 26:28Speaker 4: with the pre k kids is what they do with

- 27:43Speaker 4: Matter of fact, I've had texts to the show about it.
- 27:45Speaker 4: I know just yesterday I did about jcpenny closing at
- 27:48Speaker 4: the Charlestontown Center. The official statement was released yesterday from
- 27:52Speaker 4: the corporate office that yes, jcpenny at the Town Center
- 27:56Speaker 4: will be closing. The store has been one of the
- 27:58Speaker 4: anchor stores, been there since the mall open back in
- 28:00Speaker 4: nineteen eighty three, the last of the anchor stores, so
- 28:04Speaker 4: to speak, and it is closing. And I knew because
- 28:07Speaker 4: of all the online chatter I had about it, that
- 28:09Speaker 4: there would be a lot of people weighing. And I've
- 28:11Speaker 4: already got a couple of texts this morning so we'll
- 28:13Speaker 4: read those, go to break, talk to Ashley from the
- 28:16Speaker 4: Chamber of Commerce of Putnam County, and then come back

- 28:28Speaker 4: Is that what hull and whole group stands for? Editors

- 33:19Speaker 4: Let's bring in Ashley offer Glance for the Putnam County
- 33:22Speaker 4: Chamber of Commerce. Good morning, How are you?
- 33:25Speaker 13: Good morning, Dave? How are you.
- 33:26Speaker 4: I'm doing fine, suffering from a cold, but other than that,
- 33:28Speaker 4: I'm okay. But that will not keep me away from
- 33:32Speaker 4: a valley park on Friday night, just so you know,
- 33:34Speaker 4: I'll be there for the Chamber of Commerce dinner.
- 33:36Speaker 13: Oh yes, it's a party to not be mess You
- 33:40Speaker 13: just put me in the corner by myself.
- 33:41Speaker 4: How's that?
- 33:42Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I don't have to quarantine you.
- 33:44Speaker 4: But well, you know, there's worse things that happened before
- 33:48Speaker 4: I talk about the Chamber dinner Friday, and I want
- 33:50Speaker 4: to talk about some other big stuff happenings at Putnham County.
- 33:52Speaker 4: There's always something going on in my native land. Talk
- 33:55Speaker 4: about it.
- 33:56Speaker 13: Yeah, So here in kunt Of County, obviously, there's always
- 33:59Speaker 13: something going on, and you know, whether it's new businesses
- 34:01Speaker 13: popping up. Obviously, we've had some recent attention for housing
- 34:06Speaker 13: projects that are going on. Our development authority did a
- 34:09Speaker 13: wonderful job with that, and so you know, we're we're
- 34:12Speaker 13: just really fortunate to not only have the growth here
- 34:17Speaker 13: in Punning County that we do, but to have the
- 34:19Speaker 13: community that we do.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Talk about the development in Puttnham County and the bodies
- 34:25Speaker 4: that are coming in because there is a major home
- 34:29Speaker 4: complex going up not even half a mile from my house.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Matter of fact, it slipped out on my back deck
- 34:33Speaker 4: last night and I could you know which winter time
- 34:35Speaker 4: the trees are dead. I could actually see it. I
- 34:37Speaker 4: know there's been a major one going up, a couple
- 34:39Speaker 4: of major ones in Windfield, the Fraser's Bottom area, there
- 34:43Speaker 4: are a lot, there's a lot of construction, and we
- 34:45Speaker 4: need more. We talk about this in the past. We
- 34:47Speaker 4: definitely need more in Puttnam County and the surrounded areas. But
- 34:50Speaker 4: there's a whole lot of people that are on the
- 34:51Speaker 4: move to Putnham County right now.
- 34:54Speaker 13: Yeah, absolutely there is. And you know, we we obviously
- 34:58Speaker 13: have a housing shortage here Putnam County. And you know,
- 35:01Speaker 13: one of the reasons that people are really interested in
- 35:03Speaker 13: want to move here comes from our school system and
- 35:07Speaker 13: so they do a phenomenal job, and people really love
- 35:12Speaker 13: to bring their kids here when they're moving here to
- 35:15Speaker 13: choose because of that, and so I want to make
- 35:17Speaker 13: sure that we give that credit to them, because that
- 35:19Speaker 13: is a lot of the reasons that people live here.
- 35:21Speaker 13: But we are experiencing some growth in the housing market, obviously,
- 35:25Speaker 13: and a lot of that has to do with we've
- 35:26Speaker 13: we've always had a deficit, but some recent business growth
- 35:32Speaker 13: in the area has what led that. And then obviously
- 35:36Speaker 13: we participated in the housing study with advantage value that
- 35:38Speaker 13: showed what the actual deficit was. And so once you
- 35:41Speaker 13: can actually quantify that and show that that's what that's
- 35:44Speaker 13: what really spikes the interest of developers wanting to come
- 35:47Speaker 13: into the area.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Give me a ballpark figure on the number of new
- 35:51Speaker 4: businesses that open up in Putnam County, number of ribbon
- 35:54Speaker 4: cuttings you had in twenty twenty four, Just a ballpark figure.
- 35:57Speaker 13: Yeah, No, I can, absolutely.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Of course you can. Of course you can.
- 36:01Speaker 13: So we actually we welcomed forty five new businesses to
- 36:06Speaker 13: the Chamber of Commerce. Now that wasn't all new businesses.
- 36:09Speaker 13: A lot of them were, but that was new businesses
- 36:12Speaker 13: that wanted to be a part of our organization. But
- 36:14Speaker 13: we but as far as new businesses coming to the area,
- 36:17Speaker 13: we celebrated twenty five ribbon cuttings last year.
- 36:20Speaker 4: That's awesome. Again, we're talking to Ashley offered Glance, executive
- 36:23Speaker 4: director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Sor Ry,
- 36:25Speaker 4: let's talk about the dinner. This is coming Friday night
- 36:28Speaker 4: at the Valley Park Conference Center. It is the premier
- 36:31Speaker 4: event in Putnam County every year, and people not only
- 36:34Speaker 4: for Putnam County, but I see a lot of folks
- 36:35Speaker 4: from Kanawak County and Cable and from all over the
- 36:38Speaker 4: state that attend the big doings there at Valley Park.
- 36:42Speaker 13: Yeah, we are really excited. This is our largest events
- 36:45Speaker 13: of the year and what it is, it's just an
- 36:48Speaker 13: opportunity for us to be able to celebrate the successes
- 36:50Speaker 13: that we've had here as a community and as a
- 36:52Speaker 13: county and as a Chamber of Commerce. Our Chamber of
- 36:55Speaker 13: Commerce is thirty nine years old and so we've been
- 36:58Speaker 13: hosting this dinner for the entirety of the life of
- 37:02Speaker 13: the Chamber. And we're really fortunate because our members really
- 37:05Speaker 13: rallied behind us to support this event. We have thirty
- 37:07Speaker 13: seven sponsors this week for the dinner, and all of
- 37:11Speaker 13: them will be bringing their employees, their family, their friends,
- 37:15Speaker 13: and we'll be able to celebrate some really great things
- 37:20Speaker 13: that have been going on here at Putnam County. Like
- 37:22Speaker 13: I said, you know, our chair for twenty twenty four
- 37:26Speaker 13: was Megan Hannah and she'll be presenting on what some
- 37:29Speaker 13: of these successes were of the year. And then our
- 37:32Speaker 13: incoming chair, Chris Wallace, he will be our Board of
- 37:36Speaker 13: directors will be sharing you know, what we plan to
- 37:38Speaker 13: do this year, and then in addition to that, we
- 37:41Speaker 13: like to acknowledge our board members. And then we give
- 37:44Speaker 13: away two awards, our Mayle Lester Community Service Award and
- 37:47Speaker 13: our Young Leader Award. Our Mayle Lester Community Service Award
- 37:51Speaker 13: is in recognition of our founder, the late Mail Lester,
- 37:56Speaker 13: and so it's an opportunity for us to showcase one
- 37:58Speaker 13: of our really great community members, you know, somebody that
- 38:04Speaker 13: has dedicated their life to the betterment of Putnam County.
- 38:07Speaker 13: And so we're excited to be able to give that
- 38:08Speaker 13: out this Friday.
- 38:10Speaker 4: All right, dark, how are we looking on tickets for
- 38:12Speaker 4: Friday Night?
- 38:13Speaker 13: Yeah, so they're still If you want to grab some
- 38:16Speaker 13: sponsorships are obviously done because I've got to get things
- 38:19Speaker 13: to the printer. But if you want to grab some
- 38:21Speaker 13: individual tickets, we still have some available. You're not going
- 38:24Speaker 13: to want to miss it. We've got One of the
- 38:25Speaker 13: really fun things that we do with our dinner is
- 38:28Speaker 13: we bring in some really great entertainment. And I have
- 38:31Speaker 13: to say that the entertainment that we are bringing in
- 38:33Speaker 13: this year is a type of entertainment that I have
- 38:36Speaker 13: been trying to get for a couple of years, so
- 38:38Speaker 13: I'm really excited about that. The theme this year is
- 38:42Speaker 13: setting the bar higher than ever before, and so that's
- 38:47Speaker 13: our vision going into twenty twenty five, and this event
- 38:51Speaker 13: is to kick off to that.
- 38:52Speaker 4: All right, people want to get their tickets over the
- 38:55Speaker 4: next I would suggest you get them today or tomorrow.
- 38:58Speaker 13: What's the best way to do Yeah, the online registration
- 39:03Speaker 13: is open until five o'clock today, so you can go
- 39:05Speaker 13: on the Putnam Chamber Putnam Chamber dot org head over
- 39:09Speaker 13: to the events tab and then the dinner will be
- 39:11Speaker 13: the first thing that pops up there. So you can
- 39:12Speaker 13: get those online until five o'clock today. So I'd love
- 39:16Speaker 13: it if you want to do that that you do
- 39:18Speaker 13: that be four or five. But if you're like, oh no,
- 39:20Speaker 13: it's five oh one, what do I do? Just give
- 39:22Speaker 13: me a call, all right?
- 39:23Speaker 4: And what's your phone number there at the.
- 39:24Speaker 13: Chamber at three oh four seven sixty.
- 39:28Speaker 12: Five one zero.
- 39:29Speaker 4: All right, Ashley, always a pleasure to talk to you.
- 39:31Speaker 4: You do great work. We'll talk again soon. I'll see
- 39:33Speaker 4: you Friday night. Thanks a lot, see it. Then Ashley
- 39:36Speaker 4: offered Glance, executive director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.
- 39:39Speaker 4: I guess you know when I first moved to the area.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I moved to Putnam County in twenty twenty four, and
- 39:45Speaker 4: at the time, Valley Park wasn't built, and they were
- 39:47Speaker 4: actually having to have their chamber dinner at the Marriott
- 39:50Speaker 4: in Charleston. And I remember talking to Ashley then saying,
- 39:52Speaker 4: why do you have your chamber dinner if you're a
- 39:55Speaker 4: Putnam County organization, why do you have your chamber dinner
- 39:58Speaker 4: at the Marriott? And she said, because we don't have
- 40:01Speaker 4: a place of Putnham County big enough to hold it.
- 40:03Speaker 4: And I thought, well, that's a little hyperbole. Then I
- 40:05Speaker 4: went to my first dinner and I realized she's right.
- 40:08Speaker 4: They didn't have a big enough place to hold it.
- 40:10Speaker 4: But they do now the beautiful Valley Park Conference Center.
- 40:12Speaker 4: And we're talking a lot of people that come to
- 40:15Speaker 4: the chamber dinner. And she said, go to the Putnam
- 40:17Speaker 4: County Chamber of Commerce website or give them a call
- 40:20Speaker 4: if you want to get tickets. Because the cut off,
- 40:22Speaker 4: I mean, oh there, they're going to turn you away.
- 40:24Speaker 4: They'll find it. Maybe you can send in the sick
- 40:26Speaker 4: corner with me. They can put you over in the
- 40:27Speaker 4: quarantine area, but you need to get your tickets by
- 40:30Speaker 4: five o'clock or so today thirteen minutes away from ten

- 41:03Speaker 4: them to explain what is going on at the mall.
- 41:06Speaker 4: You know an interesting thing about that is that's the
- 41:09Speaker 4: lead story on wv metronews dot com this morning is
- 41:12Speaker 4: about jcpenny closing at the Town Center. And I was
- 41:14Speaker 4: reading the story and the quotes that are contained in
- 41:19Speaker 4: there from the whole group or from an interview that
- 41:22Speaker 4: I did with mister Hull, the leader of the or
- 41:26Speaker 4: the head of the company back in twenty twenty one.
- 41:30Speaker 4: And so my point in saying that is to say
- 41:32Speaker 4: that they've been very tight lipped about anything to my knowledge,
- 41:36Speaker 4: and I could be wrong. One of my friends in
- 41:38Speaker 4: TV or a newspaper can tell me different. I don't
- 41:40Speaker 4: know what they've said anything at all that's been put
- 41:43Speaker 4: out there about what they plan to do. So that's
- 41:45Speaker 4: how far we had to go back to get a
- 41:47Speaker 4: quote from the whole group. It had to be from
- 41:49Speaker 4: an interview that I did with the chairman or the
- 41:51Speaker 4: president or whatever his title was, back in twenty twenty one.
- 41:55Speaker 4: That's how far it's it's been going back to the
- 41:59Speaker 4: Posina federal grant. TEX says the WICK program is reportedly

- 45:40Speaker 4: I mentioned this morning wv metro news dot com The
- 45:42Speaker 4: Town Center losing its final anchor, jcpenny announcing yesterday they
- 45:46Speaker 4: will close their location on May twenty fifth. Now it's
- 45:49Speaker 4: been there since the mall opened in nineteen eighty three.
- 45:52Speaker 4: The statement from the company is contained in the story.
- 45:55Speaker 4: When I say from the company, I don't mean the
- 45:57Speaker 4: whole group. I mean from jcpenny. It's contained in the story.
- 46:01Speaker 4: Morgan Pemberton actually spent some time yesterday talking to shoppers
- 46:06Speaker 4: about it. Lots of quotes contained in the story. May've
- 46:08Speaker 4: heard the story on the air as well. Now, as
- 46:11Speaker 4: I mentioned, you were called the whole Group bought the
- 46:13Speaker 4: Town Center back in twenty twenty one, and to be honest,
- 46:16Speaker 4: they haven't done a heck of a lot with it since,
- 46:19Speaker 4: except for shuttering stores. Sears and Macy's gone Tidewater closed
- 46:25Speaker 4: last year. You know the story. But I'm going to
- 46:28Speaker 4: say this. What gets me is people using this as
- 46:33Speaker 4: an opportunity to somehow blame the Good One administration for this. Now,
- 46:41Speaker 4: if you do the research, you'll find a couple of things.
- 46:45Speaker 4: Number One, this isn't the only store that the corporate
- 46:48Speaker 4: office of JC Pennies closing. They're closing around one hundred
- 46:50Speaker 4: and twenty stores as we speak. Pennies was taken over
- 46:55Speaker 4: by a private equity company. So let's please don't act
- 46:59Speaker 4: like this is all on the city of Charleston, because
- 47:03Speaker 4: it's not. Malls themselves have suffered. We all know that,
- 47:09Speaker 4: partially for a number of reasons. You know, people like
- 47:12Speaker 4: to order things online. You know, look at the Amazons
- 47:15Speaker 4: of the world. But I will say other malls are
- 47:18Speaker 4: doing quite well, the Huntington Mall, for example. But I
- 47:23Speaker 4: don't know that it's necessarily fair to compare the other
- 47:25Speaker 4: than mall and the title. I don't know that the
- 47:28Speaker 4: Huntington Mall and the Town Center have a lot in common.
- 47:32Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of difference. And as my
- 47:35Speaker 4: good buddy, Tony the Wise Sage Tony the Taylor pointed out,
- 47:41Speaker 4: the Huntington Mall has a lot of other things around
- 47:46Speaker 4: it within a let's say, three to five mile radius.
- 47:49Speaker 4: It also has plenty of free parking and easy access
- 47:53Speaker 4: off the interstate, and real or perceived the safety issue
- 48:00Speaker 4: around the Town Center seems to always be discussed. So again,
- 48:08Speaker 4: let me reiterate. I am not someone who has always
- 48:11Speaker 4: agreed with the administration of Amir Amy Goodwin on everything.
- 48:16Speaker 4: But I'm not so sure how you can blame the city,
- 48:21Speaker 4: any city government for the failures of a private of
- 48:26Speaker 4: a private business. That's just my two cents worth, all right,
- 48:34Speaker 4: let me knock out some text here. Texas Day people
- 48:38Speaker 4: need to call their representatives and demand they speak up
- 48:41Speaker 4: about Trump withholding grants that benefit our state. Enough is enough,
- 48:45Speaker 4: says a Texter. Texas update on the whole group. They'll
- 48:51Speaker 4: be bringing a monorail to the Charleston Town Center. This
- 48:54Speaker 4: is huge. The monorail put Rockaway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook
- 48:58Speaker 4: on the map. Tex says Dave. Don't say the whole
- 49:02Speaker 4: group hasn't done anything to the town center. Have you
- 49:04Speaker 4: seen how much drywall they put up there? Has to
- 49:07Speaker 4: be close to againness record, we got jokes, tj our
- 49:11Speaker 4: listeners got jokes this morning.
- 49:13Speaker 8: I should turn your microphone on. I guess you know.
- 49:15Speaker 8: Humor is a wonderful thing. It is and it allows
- 49:17Speaker 8: you to make great points. I would agree with you.
- 49:20Speaker 8: I got the tail end of the conversation. There's no
- 49:22Speaker 8: way you blame this on Amy. I mean this is
- 49:24Speaker 8: market paced and there's a lot of variables. Anyone who
- 49:27Speaker 8: wants to blame what's happened to the town center on
- 49:30Speaker 8: Amy Goodwin just nah, that's not gonna work out. And look,
- 49:33Speaker 8: I don't agree with her on everything, but that on
- 49:36Speaker 8: this one.
- 49:36Speaker 12: No.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Well, and I think that it's a lot of people
- 49:39Speaker 4: that just want to do a lot of finger pointing
- 49:40Speaker 4: without having any real answers. That's what I have seen
- 49:43Speaker 4: in this So look, I hate to see JC Pitt
- 49:45Speaker 4: and and and please miss and to quote my good friend,
- 49:49Speaker 4: pastor Pastor Collins, miss me with this stuff about we
- 49:53Speaker 4: have nowhere to shop in Charleston. Are you freaking kidding me? Yeah?
- 49:56Speaker 4: I mean have you been Have you looked around? There's
- 50:01Speaker 4: a lot of places in this state TJ that would
- 50:03Speaker 4: kill to have what we have in the Kanaal Valley
- 50:06Speaker 4: to shop in. There's no place to shop. My favorite
- 50:09Speaker 4: text with somebody said, there's nowhere to eat in Charleston.
- 50:12Speaker 4: It's a restaurant week as we speak, plenty restaurants. People
- 50:16Speaker 4: need to I think sometimes people need to look at
- 50:20Speaker 4: the local businesses more than what they do the chains
- 50:23Speaker 4: that don't give a damn for the most part about
- 50:26Speaker 4: about us. But it's just me being crotchety old man.
- 50:29Speaker 8: Pennies is gone. That's going to sting for a lot
- 50:31Speaker 8: of people in different ways. But here's the good news.
- 50:34Speaker 8: They don't have an anchor over there. Now it's time
- 50:37Speaker 8: to talk about seriously moving on with them all. And
- 50:39Speaker 8: maybe this, the fact they have no anchor whatsoever, facilitates
- 50:42Speaker 8: that conversation. I mean, I know we have the sports complex,
- 50:44Speaker 8: but what are you going to do with the rest
- 50:46Speaker 8: of it? And that's the good news, all right.

- 51:31Speaker 8: Internet service providers say they're not able to efficiently and
- 51:34Speaker 8: timely connect their new fiber to those polls. They have

- 51:42Speaker 8: the folks in the camp that, hey, we just need
- 51:44Speaker 8: to figure this thing out because federal dollars are on
- 51:46Speaker 8: the line and we could lose these federal broadband dollars
