- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Everything's been planned.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: You know your material and then just a few minutes in, something happens.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: The room might go quiet or one person won't stop talking or perhaps you spill
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: a glass of water over your notes and
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: the whole thing starts heading somewhere you didn't expect.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: If you work with groups,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: you'll likely know this feeling or perhaps the fear of it possibly happening to you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And you'll know that a lot of what helps in these moments just doesn't make it into
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: the training manuals.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But you'll probably also know the other moments when the room comes alive,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: a quiet person finally speaks up,
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: or a group gets somewhere it couldn't have got on its own.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And those don't happen by accident either.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Working with groups is a craft.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: There's the planning and the material, but there's also the part that happens live.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Reading the room, adapting on the spot, knowing when to push forwards and when to hold back.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I'm Tom Cleary and this is Eight Arms.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Practical, focused episodes on the craft of working with groups.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: It's for anybody who runs sessions with other people,
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: trainers,
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: coaches,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: team leaders,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: people running workshops or meetings,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: whether you've been doing it for years or you've ended up doing it
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: without really planning to.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Why Eight Arms?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Because working with groups can feel like you need eight of them sometimes.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Holding the content,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: reading the room,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: keeping an eye on the time, noticing that quiet person in the corner.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And the octopus imagery is because octopuses are curious,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: adaptable problem solvers, which feels like a pretty good role model for what we do.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Each episode will take one skill,
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: challenge or idea, and gives you something you can use next time you're in the room.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Some episodes are super short.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Short enough for your cup of coffee,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: or on the walk to your next session,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: or when opening your laptop to start the online one.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Others go a little bit deeper into things like the psychology of what's happening in the room.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: But each one comes back to something you can use next time you're with a group.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: If you'd like to listen to longer conversations about the human stories and
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: the people behind group work,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: you can find these too on my other podcast, The Human Side of Facilitation.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Follow Eight Arms on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And if there's something you'd love an episode on, get in touch.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I would really like to hear from you.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: See you in the first episode.
