- 0:03Speaker 1: Woo.
- 0:03Speaker 2: It is raining cats and dogs out here. Hold on
- 0:06Speaker 2: one second, let me put my rain jacket down. Ah
- 0:09Speaker 2: all right, Welcome everyone to a brand new episode of
- 0:12Speaker 2: Beyond the Blood Podcast. I am your host, Chris Higgins.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I somebody going to go buy the on the internet
- 0:18Speaker 2: as Bearded film Guy. This is a very, very very
- 0:22Speaker 2: special episode for us. Not only is this the first
- 0:26Speaker 2: episode of After Hours, which is our new series where
- 0:29Speaker 2: we sit down and kind of discuss some physical media stuff.
- 0:32Speaker 2: We discussed movies that we watched in the previous month
- 0:35Speaker 2: on physical media, mostly genre films, but it'll be a
- 0:38Speaker 2: little bit of a variety. But also we've added a
- 0:42Speaker 2: new host, and if you were a fan of the show,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you've seen him before. My buddy Steve from After Hours
- 0:49Speaker 2: Video is now officially a host on Beyond the Blood
- 0:52Speaker 2: Podcast and this is the first episode of him full
- 0:56Speaker 2: time on the show. He was incredible before he came
- 0:59Speaker 2: on My buddy Valentine episode. We loved every second of it.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We were seeking out a third person to join the
- 1:06Speaker 2: ranks and we couldn't think of a better person. So
- 1:10Speaker 2: moving forward, you're gonna hear him. But this is the
- 1:12Speaker 2: honorary kickoff episode for him on the show. But on
- 1:18Speaker 2: this show, each of us are gonna be talking about
- 1:20Speaker 2: three physical media releases that we watched in the previous month.
- 1:24Speaker 2: This is the March episode, so we're very excited to
- 1:27Speaker 2: dive into it. Kind of bring a little bit more
- 1:30Speaker 2: of a relaxed kind of hangout show. It's a little
- 1:32Speaker 2: bit shorter than our traditional episodes. But listen, it's raining
- 1:37Speaker 2: bad out here. That thunder isn't letting up. I need
- 1:40Speaker 2: you to get some snacks. I need you to get
- 1:42Speaker 2: a couple of drinks, hunkered down. Enjoy this episode and
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'll see you guys on the next one. Welcome to
- 1:49Speaker 2: Beyond the Blood after Hours, Steve, Welcome to your first
- 2:01Speaker 2: episode officially on the show. I hope it feels good, man.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I hope you feel at home and welcome.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Thanks. Man. I'm super stoked to be here and be
- 2:11Speaker 1: a part of this and I'm excited to talk all
- 2:14Speaker 1: things movies and physical media with you guys.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah. We I remember hitting up Chuck about the idea
- 2:21Speaker 2: of bringing you on, and I was like, I can't
- 2:25Speaker 2: think of a better way to kind of like bring
- 2:31Speaker 2: the show forward, like to another level. And after the
- 2:36Speaker 2: my blode Valentine episode. I was like, damn. I was like,
- 2:39Speaker 2: I think Steve would be really good on here full time.
- 2:42Speaker 2: And it was actually the same with Brian from Last
- 2:44Speaker 2: Movie Standing. And then I was like, as much as
- 2:47Speaker 2: I love Brian, I was like, if I have Brian
- 2:48Speaker 2: on every single episode, I was like, every episode's gonna
- 2:50Speaker 2: be five and a half hours a long. So yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 2: that was fun. But no, seriously, man, I appreciate you
- 2:58Speaker 2: being a part of this. Thanks for saying yes. I
- 3:01Speaker 2: was a little scared because you have a lot going
- 3:03Speaker 2: on as far as like growing your Instagram page and
- 3:06Speaker 2: your YouTube channel and all that stuff. So I was
- 3:08Speaker 2: hoping I wasn't interfering with any of that by asking
- 3:13Speaker 2: you to get involved in something else full time.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You know, no, not at all. I know when you
- 3:19Speaker 1: initially had reached out to me about it, I was
- 3:21Speaker 1: like super excited to, you know, be a part of this.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And I remember seeing these slate of movies that you
- 3:26Speaker 1: guys were discussing in the near future after that my
- 3:28Speaker 1: Bloody Valentine episode, and I'm not gonna lie, I was like,
- 3:32Speaker 1: low key kind of like jealous because I wanted to
- 3:35Speaker 1: chime in on each one of those movies you guys
- 3:37Speaker 1: were talking about. So pretty excited to be able to
- 3:40Speaker 1: be a part of that going forward with you guys.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Hell yeah, dude, we're stoked. Chuck. How are you, man?
- 3:45Speaker 2: How's things treating you lately?
- 3:48Speaker 1: Good?
- 3:48Speaker 3: I've been pretty good recently. I have no complaints. But yes, Steve,
- 3:53Speaker 3: welcome to the show. It's awesome to have you on here.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Man. Thank you.
- 3:56Speaker 3: It was a no brainer when Chris asked me if
- 3:59Speaker 3: it was all right for you to join the show.
- 4:00Speaker 3: It's just like, yep, immediately, yes, it didn't even hesitating.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Well, I appreciate it, guys.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And do you want to tell everybody about your City
- 4:09Speaker 2: of Living Dead experience recently?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yes, I watched I was doing a rewatch the City
- 4:16Speaker 3: that the Living Dead last night and fell asleep like
- 4:18Speaker 3: maybe thirty minutes in.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I can only imagine the dreams and or nightmares that
- 4:25Speaker 1: you had as a result of that. Dude.
- 4:28Speaker 3: My dreams are wild in general, Like, even if I'm
- 4:30Speaker 3: not watching a horror movie before I go to sleep,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I have some weird dreams. I feel you will say
- 4:37Speaker 3: last last night was weird.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I feel like though we're part of that generation of
- 4:42Speaker 2: the fall asleep with the DVD menu on, or like
- 4:45Speaker 2: fall asleep with the TV channel on that turned into
- 4:49Speaker 2: Girls Going Wild at two am. So I feel like
- 4:51Speaker 2: we're built a little differently to what we can.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Falling asleep with the like you know, watching Cartoon Network
- 4:56Speaker 3: and next you know, it's like two o'clock in the morning.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It's like Girls Gone Mild Themes song I'm playing, and
- 5:00Speaker 3: you're like, what the hell.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Dude, Like I think I think.
- 5:04Speaker 2: The worst was like falling asleep with DVDs and then
- 5:07Speaker 2: just having to.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Hear the forty five seconds and then your view was yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 3: and then you're just too tired and lazy to get
- 5:13Speaker 3: up and turn it off. You're just like whatever, Well that's.
- 5:17Speaker 2: When you lose the remote every single time.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, right, Oh my god, dude.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Well, welcome back to be on the Blood Blood. As
- 5:31Speaker 2: we explained the intro, this is a cool one. This
- 5:34Speaker 2: this little segment we're doing, it's called after Hours, and
- 5:36Speaker 2: this is just us hanging out. We're planning on doing
- 5:39Speaker 2: this every month, and what we're basically going to be
- 5:43Speaker 2: doing is just talking about three titles each that we've
- 5:46Speaker 2: picked up in the previous month. So we're talking about
- 5:49Speaker 2: we picked up I'm sorry that we watched in the
- 5:51Speaker 2: previous month on physical media. So, as I explained in
- 5:54Speaker 2: the intro, we are giant physical media fans. This is
- 5:59Speaker 2: what we do, this is what we support this. This
- 6:02Speaker 2: podcast was born out of audio commentaries that are ninety
- 6:07Speaker 2: nine percent on physical media. So every month we're buying,
- 6:12Speaker 2: we're watching this endless cycle. We were actually just talking
- 6:15Speaker 2: about how much money we spent on physical media before
- 6:17Speaker 2: we went live. But you know, I wanted to do
- 6:21Speaker 2: something where at least once a month we could hang
- 6:24Speaker 2: out without having to discuss a podcast and have this
- 6:27Speaker 2: extremely structured show. That way, people who you know are
- 6:32Speaker 2: listening to the show and don't follow us on Instagram
- 6:35Speaker 2: or don't know whis personally can kind of get an
- 6:37Speaker 2: idea of who we are and why we support this
- 6:39Speaker 2: so much, and still get to talk about movies and
- 6:42Speaker 2: bullshit and hang out do exactly what we're doing now.
- 6:45Speaker 2: So I thought this would be you know, a fun,
- 6:48Speaker 2: a fun, little extra every month. I mean, what do
- 6:51Speaker 2: you guys think?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Like that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It gives us. I like that, it gives us a
- 6:56Speaker 1: chance to talk about like more of the physical media
- 6:59Speaker 1: side of things are just home video in general, you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: obviously the discussion is always the most important part of it.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But being able to, you know, talk about like some
- 7:09Speaker 1: of the more recent releases or maybe titles we've been
- 7:12Speaker 1: wanting to pick up for some time. I think that
- 7:14Speaker 1: that's like another fun side of it.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's also like a good way to talk
- 7:19Speaker 3: about movies that we may not get around to cover
- 7:22Speaker 3: in a full episode as well.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we watched so much. Like I was
- 7:28Speaker 2: just looking at my letterbox today and I watched, let's
- 7:32Speaker 2: see this year, I've logged one hundred and thirteen titles.
- 7:39Speaker 1: For this year.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Oh man, I told you I'm going to hit three
- 7:43Speaker 1: sixty five by the end of the year.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Well, I think we're ninety five days in the new year,
- 7:49Speaker 2: so it's something like that. It's like ninety It was
- 7:52Speaker 2: like ninety six or nine. I remember. I remember thinking
- 7:54Speaker 2: today that I had more movie watches than we had
- 7:57Speaker 2: days in the year so far. But I will say
- 8:01Speaker 2: I do stay up pretty late usually watching a movie.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Also on my days off, I typically can fit in
- 8:10Speaker 2: like three or four because I'll put stuff on, like
- 8:14Speaker 2: and it's not new. Everything I log is not new.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It could be something I've seen a million times, so
- 8:19Speaker 2: that probably contributes, you know, like watching a couple's retreat
- 8:23Speaker 2: for the tenth time in a year or something like
- 8:26Speaker 2: those background watches that you just put on. Yeah, so
- 8:30Speaker 2: we watch a lot like today alone, I watched Primal
- 8:33Speaker 2: Rage from the movie It's great, and then I watched
- 8:37Speaker 2: Doctor Strange in a Multiverse of Madness.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So that's quite the double feature, you know.
- 8:44Speaker 2: All right, So everything in my collection, I use clz
- 8:48Speaker 2: to log the collection, right, and everything I put into collection,
- 8:52Speaker 2: I add is not seen. And then when I don't
- 8:56Speaker 2: have anything in particular that I want to watch, I
- 8:58Speaker 2: come into the movie room and I do this sh
- 9:00Speaker 2: shake thing, so it'll just pick a random title and
- 9:04Speaker 2: then I'll watch usually whatever that is.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Oh man, that's fun.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So that was that was literally today. I woke up,
- 9:11Speaker 2: I like, you know, was ready for the day. I
- 9:13Speaker 2: was like, yeah, let me chill out watching my Primal
- 9:14Speaker 2: Rage came up. I'm like cool, and then it was
- 9:16Speaker 2: Doctor Doctor Strange and Multiverse Madness and I had never
- 9:20Speaker 2: seen it. I owned it, yeah, but I had never
- 9:23Speaker 2: seen it. So I was like, oh fuck. I was like,
- 9:24Speaker 2: let me watch that. And uh had a pretty good
- 9:26Speaker 2: time with it.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Little Sam Rai reaction.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, dude, he is his style was
- 9:34Speaker 2: on full display. I just wish we could see the
- 9:39Speaker 2: non Kevin Figee cut because you can be unhinged. Yeah, yeah,
- 9:45Speaker 2: like we need to we need to pull Zack Snyder
- 9:47Speaker 2: Justice League on that thing. But yeah, yeah, yeah, the
- 9:53Speaker 2: three hour cut of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, but yeah, I have my I three
- 10:00Speaker 2: picked out one of you guys. How about how about Steve?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Since you this is your first full hosting appearance, do
- 10:09Speaker 2: you want to talk about your first title.
- 10:11Speaker 1: That you have? Yeah? So the first movie I wanted
- 10:16Speaker 1: to discuss was Cruising William Freakin's Cruising with al Pacino.
- 10:22Speaker 1: This was such an awesome watch, especially with it being
- 10:29Speaker 1: in four K, and the last time I watched it,
- 10:31Speaker 1: it was it did not look this this nice, but
- 10:35Speaker 1: it gave me a whole new appreciation for just how
- 10:39Speaker 1: well done this film was. Have you guys, either of
- 10:42Speaker 1: you guys watched it or I have not?
- 10:48Speaker 2: I so, for full transparency, we actually recorded one of
- 10:53Speaker 2: these episodes a couple a couple of nights ago, and
- 10:56Speaker 2: it was way too long, so we slimmed it down
- 10:59Speaker 2: and I was watching a documentary that brought up Cruising,
- 11:05Speaker 2: and it showed a lot and talked a lot about
- 11:07Speaker 2: the movie, so I only know it from that perspective.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I've never seen it in full.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Well, it's I think, as far as William Freakin's movies,
- 11:17Speaker 1: Go to Live and Die in la is probably my
- 11:21Speaker 1: favorite film that he directed, but I would put Cruising
- 11:24Speaker 1: as a close second. I know that a lot of
- 11:28Speaker 1: his praise comes from like The French Connection or The Exorcist,
- 11:32Speaker 1: and don't get me wrong, I love those movies, but
- 11:35Speaker 1: there's just something about like the fringe, giallo slasher element
- 11:40Speaker 1: to Cruising that I really gravitate towards. I have to say,
- 11:45Speaker 1: for the subject matter for this movie, it's pretty heavy,
- 11:49Speaker 1: especially at the during the time that this was filmed
- 11:53Speaker 1: and released. But yeah, I mean it's I know, it
- 11:57Speaker 1: was like super controversial when it was being filmed and
- 12:00Speaker 1: there was a lot of pushback on the movie. So
- 12:04Speaker 1: but Aero Video did a phenomenal job with the transfer,
- 12:08Speaker 1: and it's just I'm super stoked to have that in
- 12:11Speaker 1: my collection now.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah that you know, For as much as I love Shallow's,
- 12:16Speaker 2: I also love the shallow adjacent kind of categories, which
- 12:21Speaker 2: there was a lot of, especially in American cinema at
- 12:25Speaker 2: that time, because Jallo, I don't think had fully come
- 12:28Speaker 2: to the US yet, so a lot of a lot
- 12:31Speaker 2: of directors were bringing some of that influence, especially I
- 12:34Speaker 2: think Freedkiem of Cruising Brian de Palma is probably the most,
- 12:38Speaker 2: you know, the biggest example that you could point out
- 12:40Speaker 2: at that time, and Cruising I never really knew and
- 12:46Speaker 2: I really still don't know how to categorize it in
- 12:49Speaker 2: a genre, and I don't think everything needs to be categorized,
- 12:52Speaker 2: but I definitely think of it as in the same
- 12:56Speaker 2: aspect of kind of like Maniac that ced underbelly, like
- 13:03Speaker 2: fifty second Street underside of New York that nobody ever
- 13:06Speaker 2: saw or people forget kind of existed.
- 13:08Speaker 1: It's really gritty, like it's just a very grimy field
- 13:12Speaker 1: to New York City that you don't see in more
- 13:15Speaker 1: recent movies. But yeah, I agree, it's it's very much
- 13:19Speaker 1: in the vein of Maniac or the New York Ripper
- 13:23Speaker 1: with that aesthetic.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I once saw somebody it might have been Letterbox, it
- 13:29Speaker 2: might have been some other platform, but somebody once explained
- 13:32Speaker 2: Maniac as you constantly feel like there's a syringe like
- 13:38Speaker 2: like it feels like any moment a stter ridge could
- 13:40Speaker 2: pierce your skin. And I was like, I was like,
- 13:43Speaker 2: that sounds a little crazy. Then I remember rewatching Maniac
- 13:45Speaker 2: and I was like, yeah, this feels pretty authentic. Yeah, like,
- 13:48Speaker 2: you know, it just feels like that.
- 13:50Speaker 1: It's an interesting way to describe it. But I don't
- 13:52Speaker 1: think it's too far off though.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I think it was one of those, you know, the
- 13:55Speaker 2: letterbox that try to get the most liked review com
- 14:00Speaker 2: It was like one of those reaches kind of like
- 14:02Speaker 2: the Twitter retweet or the X retweet, like you know,
- 14:08Speaker 2: quotes that people put up where they try to make
- 14:11Speaker 2: it as like all, look how unique this is, and
- 14:13Speaker 2: people react to it, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 14:17Speaker 2: but I have that action. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have
- 14:20Speaker 2: that release. I'm very excited to check it out. I
- 14:22Speaker 2: do appreciate the leather style slip cover of the box,
- 14:26Speaker 2: the slip box to the box.
- 14:28Speaker 1: They Aero's been knocking it out with that. And I
- 14:32Speaker 1: know we were talking about Deep Blue Sea not that
- 14:36Speaker 1: long ago, but that's another one where they're very very
- 14:39Speaker 1: unique looking on the shelf and I got to appreciate,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you know, whoever's in charge of making those choices.
- 14:46Speaker 2: It's two opposite sides of the coin there, Like Cruising
- 14:48Speaker 2: is so minimal, I think it's perfect, and then Deep
- 14:51Speaker 2: Blue cy is like outrageous. All this color the art
- 14:54Speaker 2: is crazy too, totally different, and both of them are great.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I love both.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I will tell you you that. For Deep Blue c
- 15:02Speaker 1: when I come down and I look at like my shelves,
- 15:05Speaker 1: that instantly is like one of the first titles that
- 15:07Speaker 1: I notice. Easy.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I can see it right behind you right now. Actually
- 15:14Speaker 2: another one that stands out too, just looking at your shelf.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I know people can't see. But is the blue arrow
- 15:19Speaker 2: shallow Essentials? That one pokes out real heavy.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a unique color scheme.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but great, great choice, man, I need to
- 15:30Speaker 2: get on that. I think it's on my list to
- 15:35Speaker 2: watch to talk about next month, Like I think it's
- 15:37Speaker 2: on I think I'm gonna watch it this month finally,
- 15:40Speaker 2: But Chuck, what do you got for us? Man? What's
- 15:41Speaker 2: your what's your first pick?
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 15:43Speaker 3: So for the first movie I'm going to talk about,
- 15:45Speaker 3: we're gonna be talking about nineteen eighty six.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Is Trick or Treat?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Oh dude, Rocket that was released by Red Shot, Red Shirt,
- 15:54Speaker 3: Oh my God, red Shirt home video and syneps. Nice
- 15:57Speaker 3: little four K got some no really good art on
- 16:02Speaker 3: the front.
- 16:04Speaker 2: But yeah, would think of the movie itself.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I had a blast with it.
- 16:08Speaker 3: This was my first time watching it and it was
- 16:11Speaker 3: just no fun, fun ride from start to end, especially
- 16:16Speaker 3: being a fan of heavy metal music.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that movie rules really hard. Man. We on the
- 16:25Speaker 2: first time we recorded, I talked about how much I
- 16:28Speaker 2: really appreciated that that four K transfer. I think that
- 16:31Speaker 2: transfer is definitively I no longer think one of the
- 16:36Speaker 2: best I've ever seen, especially for an eighties movie, And
- 16:40Speaker 2: I think Steve would pretty would back me pretty good
- 16:43Speaker 2: on that.
- 16:44Speaker 1: That was It's up there as far as like, especially
- 16:48Speaker 1: for one of the releases last year, because I felt
- 16:51Speaker 1: like we had been waiting so long for this to
- 16:53Speaker 1: get released and I wasn't quite sure if it would
- 16:57Speaker 1: meet my expectations, especially for like how long we were
- 17:00Speaker 1: waiting on it. But man, that that transfer was out
- 17:04Speaker 1: of this world. Yeah, we definitely put it up there
- 17:06Speaker 1: for sure.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Chuck, what did you think of of Ozzy
- 17:13Speaker 2: Osbourne and Gene Simmons in that one?
- 17:16Speaker 3: Surprisingly we talked about this before I was very surprised
- 17:20Speaker 3: with Gene Simmons's opped in in that movie. I did
- 17:24Speaker 3: not expect him to be as good as he was. Yeah,
- 17:28Speaker 3: And just seeing Ozzie play like you know this, you
- 17:32Speaker 3: know church goer that was talking down on metal was
- 17:34Speaker 3: a pretty fun sight to see, especially everything that was
- 17:38Speaker 3: going on with the whole Satanic panic thing back in
- 17:40Speaker 3: the eighties.
- 17:42Speaker 2: See Ozzy is super cool, but that feels like a
- 17:45Speaker 2: special guest appearance, Like yeah, it feels like Gene Simmons
- 17:49Speaker 2: just fits right in.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Like yeah.
- 17:52Speaker 2: My wife was like questioning whether or not she was like,
- 17:54Speaker 2: oh my god, that's Gen Simmons. I'm like, yeah, he's good.
- 17:56Speaker 2: He's he's actually really good.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Yeah, because I saw that he was in the film,
- 18:01Speaker 3: and when the disc jockey first popped up, I was like,
- 18:04Speaker 3: he kind of looks like Gene Simmons, but the way
- 18:05Speaker 3: he's acting, I don't think that's him. And then a
- 18:08Speaker 3: couple of seconds later I was like, Nope, it's Gene Simmons.
- 18:10Speaker 3: He's doing pretty damn good.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Shocked to say the least.
- 18:16Speaker 2: There there's a lot about that movie that I like,
- 18:18Speaker 2: and surprisingly that movies really team it was. It was
- 18:22Speaker 2: much more team than I was expecting. It kind of
- 18:24Speaker 2: felt like, I don't know, you know, at that time,
- 18:28Speaker 2: the ratings things were all off, but it like it
- 18:30Speaker 2: could almost passes like a PG movie, Like it was
- 18:35Speaker 2: very much more team than I was expecting. My favorite
- 18:39Speaker 2: scene was the scene in the car mm hm, and
- 18:42Speaker 2: not because of the nudity, just because.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Of how cool okay I was about I was about
- 18:47Speaker 1: to ask.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I mean, no, no, no, I don't think. I don't
- 18:52Speaker 2: think it's that, man. I think it's the I think
- 18:54Speaker 2: it's the way it's shot. It's the you know, the
- 18:58Speaker 2: crazy and crazy demon, the really gross effect when she
- 19:02Speaker 2: pulls the headphone off or when he pulls the headphones
- 19:04Speaker 2: off of her, and the year kind of comes with it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was really gnarly. Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was cool though. And I mean, of all
- 19:13Speaker 2: the movies that came out during like the rock and
- 19:16Speaker 2: roll Satanic Panic Era, I do think that's probably my favorite.
- 19:23Speaker 2: And I think it's the best representation. Like I think
- 19:26Speaker 2: if anybody was like, hey, what was going on at
- 19:29Speaker 2: this time? I don't understand it, I'd be like, oh,
- 19:31Speaker 2: watch this movie.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Can we appreciate though? That as Red Shirt Pictures first release,
- 19:39Speaker 1: I like it's a grand slam just across the board,
- 19:42Speaker 1: the presentation, the transfer. I mean, the last time that
- 19:46Speaker 1: I saw that movie was on VHS, so to see
- 19:49Speaker 1: it in such a prestige format was like a night
- 19:52Speaker 1: and day difference.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and that release a great booklet with three incredible
- 19:59Speaker 2: like two great right ups, and then right up from
- 20:01Speaker 2: the owner of Red Shirt himself, Mike great right up
- 20:05Speaker 2: about kind of his history with the movie and the
- 20:07Speaker 2: journey to making it a reality. Fantastic making of documentary.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And I'd be remissed to mention that they just announced
- 20:17Speaker 2: prom Night, the prom Night sequels, and they announced nine
- 20:23Speaker 2: seven six, Evil Too and Fright Night and Fright Night Too. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 2: you're right. I knew there was one more I was missing.
- 20:30Speaker 2: So if if it's half the quality that we got
- 20:35Speaker 2: with this, they're gonna be blowing it out of the
- 20:37Speaker 2: park with those. And I'm sure that these are more
- 20:39Speaker 2: team ups with with Synapps.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I just know that any of those movies are in
- 20:44Speaker 1: good hands. And I believe another one that they have
- 20:47Speaker 1: in the work. Yeah, I believe another one that they
- 20:49Speaker 1: have in the works is Hunter's Blood. So like any
- 20:52Speaker 1: of those, like, I'm super stoked about that.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I'm very excited man, and I'm happy for
- 21:00Speaker 2: Mike over at Red Shirt and proud to have, you know,
- 21:04Speaker 2: gotten one of the limited editions from him. You know,
- 21:08Speaker 2: now for people listening, the limited editions are sold out,
- 21:11Speaker 2: but the standard edition is out and it has a
- 21:13Speaker 2: beautiful slipcover. I think the slipcover on those are great,
- 21:17Speaker 2: so good, A good watch, a great, great soundtrack in
- 21:22Speaker 2: that movie as well. Oh yeah, absolutely so I'm gonna
- 21:26Speaker 2: kick off talking about a little movie from nineteen eighty
- 21:30Speaker 2: five called House. You guys know about this one.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I just recently watched that, so it's good timing.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Yeah, this was a Steve Minor movie. This was a
- 21:41Speaker 2: story by Fred Decker. As we know, this is kind
- 21:47Speaker 2: of the perfect I kind of consider it a perfect
- 21:50Speaker 2: horror comedy in a way. What's so fascinating to me
- 21:54Speaker 2: is that you have Steve Minor, who directed Friday thirteen,
- 21:57Speaker 2: two and three. Sean Cunningham produced his House, So Sean
- 22:01Speaker 2: Cunningham is the reason this movie even happened. And then
- 22:04Speaker 2: you have Harry Manfordini doing the music. So the score
- 22:06Speaker 2: to this is very Friday the thirteenth, But how much
- 22:12Speaker 2: fun this movie is From beginning to end. It's got
- 22:16Speaker 2: an incredible practical effects that aren't afraid to be silly.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It has some genuinely deep and dark topics it takes on,
- 22:27Speaker 2: especially conservating the Vietnam War, which is wild to me.
- 22:32Speaker 2: The whole sublot about Vietnam. I was, I remember the
- 22:35Speaker 2: first time being amazed even brought that up.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Well, because I feel like you have to strike such
- 22:39Speaker 1: a balance, especially with dealing with something that's, like, you know,
- 22:43Speaker 1: it's pretty heavy subject matter. So yeah, I feel like
- 22:46Speaker 1: if you hadn't of given it the proper care, it
- 22:49Speaker 1: could have really thrown off the movie. Yeah, that movie
- 22:53Speaker 1: is so rich in atmosphere, like it's crazy.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it is in everything from there's a great making
- 23:00Speaker 2: of documentary on the error release that I have for
- 23:02Speaker 2: this movie that that delved into a lot that I
- 23:06Speaker 2: was kind of wondering about. One being the incredible production
- 23:10Speaker 2: design of the house. So clearly there was an external
- 23:13Speaker 2: a real house, but then the inside the house was
- 23:15Speaker 2: built on a set and it feels so cohesive. From
- 23:19Speaker 2: what you see, it's like an older Victorian, larger house,
- 23:24Speaker 2: but the inside looks incredible. The monsters look great. There's
- 23:29Speaker 2: a variety of like these big headed, clearly like rubber
- 23:32Speaker 2: suit monsters at show up and then to kind of
- 23:38Speaker 2: end it with the big bad being Big Ben, a
- 23:40Speaker 2: six foot six tall, corroded pow as of living in
- 23:46Speaker 2: another world as a villain is awesome and I always
- 23:51Speaker 2: just have a ton of fun with this movie. George
- 23:54Speaker 2: Went as Harold the Neighbor is fantastic. He's great comedic relief.
- 24:00Speaker 2: And this movie never feels like it's trying to be funny.
- 24:05Speaker 2: It's it's not like adding in humor just to add
- 24:08Speaker 2: in humor. It just flows so well. I always have
- 24:13Speaker 2: such a great time with it.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Can you say the same thing about the sequels?
- 24:20Speaker 2: I can't I do it, man, dude. I got like
- 24:24Speaker 2: five minutes in the House too, and I was like,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I cannot do this, man, I'm done.
- 24:29Speaker 1: It's just I don't think it. Yeah, I don't think
- 24:33Speaker 1: it quite captured that same magic from the first one.
- 24:37Speaker 2: You I mean, I don't know how you can even
- 24:42Speaker 2: try to without having you know, Steve Minor obviously a
- 24:47Speaker 2: very well respected capable director, Sean Cunningham as a producer,
- 24:51Speaker 2: and I think Sean Cunningham might have produced House too.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I can't remember, uh perfectly offhand, but yeah, it just
- 24:57Speaker 2: doesn't feel the same. Man. It's almost like for how
- 25:00Speaker 2: To the magic's kind of gone. It just doesn't feel
- 25:03Speaker 2: And then there's three and four, which I've never even
- 25:04Speaker 2: attempted to see before.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So I think you're right about Sean Cunningham.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but at what point the term producer is either
- 25:20Speaker 2: like hands on impacting the end result of the film,
- 25:25Speaker 2: or it's like you signed your name under producer and
- 25:28Speaker 2: then you had nothing to do with it ever.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Again, Well, and they're saying the story is by Fred Decker,
- 25:33Speaker 1: So it just makes me wonder like how much involvement
- 25:37Speaker 1: they actually had in it, because I'll be honest, it
- 25:41Speaker 1: didn't really feel like the same tone, Like I felt
- 25:43Speaker 1: like it got really like leaned more on the comedy
- 25:47Speaker 1: side of things. I mean, it's it's fine for what
- 25:52Speaker 1: it is, but I feel like the first one's kind
- 25:55Speaker 1: of in its own tier. Yeah.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm waiting on this to get a four K.
- 26:01Speaker 2: I think this Blu ray looks great and it's available
- 26:03Speaker 2: in the US. Got the House two Stories, which is
- 26:07Speaker 2: a clever name collection, and then overseas there's like the
- 26:11Speaker 2: House Collection from Arrow, which is all four I do
- 26:14Speaker 2: think this movie would look great in four K. And
- 26:18Speaker 2: also like my copy of it bothers me because it's
- 26:21Speaker 2: an Arrow released with a blue case instead of beer. Yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 2: and these Blu Ray these Arrow cases are like, I
- 26:33Speaker 2: feel like they're thicker than regular Blu Ray cases, like
- 26:36Speaker 2: they're more squared off. So I haven't been able to
- 26:38Speaker 2: find a replacement for Did.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You get that as a standalone?
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yeah? I think I bought this on Amazon some years ago.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 2: So, but yeah, that's House from nineteen eighty five. Great
- 26:50Speaker 2: making up documentary. Good Blu Ray from Arrow, Steve, you
- 26:55Speaker 2: got something else for us?
- 26:57Speaker 1: So the next one I wanted to talk about was
- 27:00Speaker 1: Sweet Alice.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Nice.
- 27:02Speaker 1: So this film came out in nineteen seventy six. It's
- 27:06Speaker 1: considered I would say, more of like a slasher, but
- 27:11Speaker 1: I would I think revisiting it, you could also consider
- 27:16Speaker 1: it more of like an American Giallo. So I know
- 27:19Speaker 1: we were talking about Cruising earlier and it felt like
- 27:22Speaker 1: this would also be in the same conversation. But it was.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Not.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Only was the transfer incredible from Aero, the movie itself
- 27:33Speaker 1: has just had me on the edge of my seat
- 27:35Speaker 1: the entire time. It's really well done, lots of twists
- 27:39Speaker 1: and turns throughout the movie you think you know who
- 27:42Speaker 1: the killer is and has you second guessing the entire time,
- 27:46Speaker 1: all the way up until the very end of the film.
- 27:48Speaker 1: But that's another one. That and Cruising are two films
- 27:51Speaker 1: that recently Arrow has knocked out of the park, and
- 27:55Speaker 1: I can't recommend them enough anyone who maybe hasn't seen them.
- 28:01Speaker 2: You have the Arrow exclusive slip.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Cover, right, Yeah, so I had to. I had to
- 28:08Speaker 1: jump on that one just because I feel like that
- 28:10Speaker 1: that that cover art is so iconic. Yeah, with the
- 28:16Speaker 1: knife and the dow.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I like the yellow of the traditional
- 28:21Speaker 2: poster art that we've come to know, but that's so
- 28:25Speaker 2: much better, man. Yeah, there it is.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah again another Yallo adjacent.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a little bit of a theme going. Yeah,
- 28:36Speaker 1: oh yes, there is.
- 28:40Speaker 2: They if I remember correctly, the director and we brought
- 28:45Speaker 2: this up last time and I haven't looked at it anymore.
- 28:47Speaker 2: But I think he had some issues with what was
- 28:52Speaker 2: the original.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Title that movie, Community Union.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I think he had some issues with a religion he
- 28:59Speaker 2: was a part of something about how he got kicked
- 29:01Speaker 2: out or there was something having to do with some
- 29:05Speaker 2: religious differences. He had and that's what kind of inspired
- 29:10Speaker 2: that movie.
- 29:11Speaker 1: So it's interesting because just reading a little bit into it,
- 29:15Speaker 1: I guess they're I mean, and I can see it
- 29:17Speaker 1: after revisiting the movie. But there's a lot of Hitchcock
- 29:20Speaker 1: influence to it, and they drew influence from Don't Look Now,
- 29:25Speaker 1: which is another I would consider that like a Giallow
- 29:28Speaker 1: adjacent film, which I highly recommend if anyone out there
- 29:32Speaker 1: hasn't seen it. But yeah, just across the board, this
- 29:36Speaker 1: is just such a very, very interesting movie and like
- 29:42Speaker 1: I said, it keeps you on the edge of your
- 29:43Speaker 1: seat the entire time.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And features are really early Brooke Shields right correct.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Yep. They definitely lean pretty heavy into advertising her in
- 29:53Speaker 1: the movie, and she is not in it that much.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean unfortunately as as things went.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Back then, Yeah, exactly.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Speaking of Shallow Adjacent, I think, Chuck, you have a
- 30:09Speaker 2: you have a pick for us.
- 30:10Speaker 1: It's pretty the perfect segue. Yes.
- 30:14Speaker 3: So for my next movie we're gonna be talking about
- 30:17Speaker 3: is going to be the third and the final film
- 30:19Speaker 3: in Ti West ex trilogy, Maxine, Yeah, which, yeah, Jallow Adjacent.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Like you said, it was again another first time watching
- 30:32Speaker 3: all there all three films, I'm talking about were first
- 30:33Speaker 3: time watch this for me. I remember talking to you
- 30:36Speaker 3: Chris after watching these films, and yeah, I loved it.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I love Maxine. I know a lot like you said,
- 30:44Speaker 3: people didn't like the ending. They thought it wasn't like
- 30:47Speaker 3: a great ending for Maxine herself. They kind of wrote
- 30:51Speaker 3: this movie off in a way. But I loved it.
- 30:55Speaker 2: It's it's hard with trilogies, man, Like I don't don't think.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I don't really consider that trilogy like in the same
- 31:06Speaker 2: vein as I would consider like, I don't know, it's
- 31:11Speaker 2: like a traditional trilogy.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah, For some reason, my brain went the fifty shades
- 31:16Speaker 2: of gray. Oh boyfty shades free fifty shades. I don't
- 31:20Speaker 2: know why my brain went.
- 31:21Speaker 1: To that, which I have very different definitions of trilogies.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I think. I think with Tywey, I interpret what he
- 31:28Speaker 2: was going for as like, we can create this through line.
- 31:32Speaker 2: But it's a pretty good excuse to capture three totally
- 31:37Speaker 2: unique different eras of film obviously, like seventies Grindhouse with X, thirties,
- 31:44Speaker 2: forties fifties Technicolor with Pearl, and then seventies eighties Yellow
- 31:50Speaker 2: with Maxine. And I think Maxine like knocks it out
- 31:54Speaker 2: of the park. It doesn't. It doesn't feel movies today
- 31:59Speaker 2: feel like they're trying to look and feel like the
- 32:04Speaker 2: movies they're they're inspiring from. Maxine feels like it's from
- 32:09Speaker 2: that era. It doesn't feel like it's trying. It's just
- 32:11Speaker 2: so naturally that all the way through. I love it
- 32:16Speaker 2: so much.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and it was great and be A Got's performance
- 32:20Speaker 3: and it's just so good in all three films. She
- 32:23Speaker 3: does an amazing job.
- 32:26Speaker 1: I felt like there was a little bit of Brian
- 32:27Speaker 1: to Palma influence on it, not leaning too heavily on it,
- 32:32Speaker 1: but it felt like there was some scenes in there
- 32:35Speaker 1: that I felt like, you know, paid a nice homage
- 32:39Speaker 1: to some of his works.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Well, you can kind of look at it as like
- 32:44Speaker 2: I guess you can say, and spoiler alert, this movie's
- 32:48Speaker 2: been out for a year now, so fast forward a
- 32:51Speaker 2: couple of seconds if you don't want to hear it.
- 32:53Speaker 2: But the death scene in the video store, it's like,
- 32:57Speaker 2: you can say that was very Gentofolgie, or you could
- 33:01Speaker 2: say it was very dressed to kill yeah, Brian Obama,
- 33:04Speaker 2: you know, but Brian DePalma was was copying, not copying
- 33:08Speaker 2: but sending homage to Jello with that, So then now
- 33:12Speaker 2: we have an homage being homaged in Maxine, you know
- 33:17Speaker 2: what I mean. But there's so much about that movie.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I love one being like the title card on the
- 33:24Speaker 2: license plate, believe it or not, as much as I
- 33:31Speaker 2: love me a Goth, And I think her performance is good.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Maxine is my least favorite portrayal of that character of
- 33:40Speaker 2: the third Yeah, so in X, she's still like what's
- 33:48Speaker 2: the word I'm looking for, Like, she's confident when she's
- 33:52Speaker 2: on coke.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Yeah, confident, I feel like most people are.
- 33:59Speaker 2: But there's like a little bit of restraint to her character.
- 34:04Speaker 2: And then in Perl, obviously she's playing a different character,
- 34:07Speaker 2: but her performance is incredible in that Maxine, she's like
- 34:11Speaker 2: so confident, you know what I mean? She is, And
- 34:14Speaker 2: I get that she a lot has changed since the
- 34:17Speaker 2: events of X, but like when she walks out of
- 34:20Speaker 2: the out of the audition in the beginning and she's like,
- 34:23Speaker 2: I fucking nailed that, like like y'all better just go home.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I'm like, man, you are confident. But her performance is
- 34:32Speaker 2: great in doing that.
- 34:33Speaker 1: You know, where would you guys rank Maxine compared to
- 34:39Speaker 1: the rest of the trilogy.
- 34:42Speaker 3: For me personally, I would say number two, right behind X.
- 34:47Speaker 2: I would agree, Yeah, that's probably what I would I
- 34:51Speaker 2: think last time I might have said it was my favorite,
- 34:53Speaker 2: but in the times since I rewatched, I would probably
- 34:56Speaker 2: say X is still my favorite.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Respectively. For each one of the entries, I feel like
- 35:04Speaker 1: they're you can you can watch them either on their
- 35:06Speaker 1: own or if you watch them in order. But either way,
- 35:10Speaker 1: I mean, they all they all have their own identity.
- 35:13Speaker 1: That's why I like most about that trilogy. It's very unconventional,
- 35:16Speaker 1: and I think I I personally, I feel like I
- 35:19Speaker 1: lean a little bit more towards X because it kind
- 35:21Speaker 1: of captures it, like you were talking about Chris, like
- 35:24Speaker 1: grind House, Slash or aesthetic that to me is a
- 35:27Speaker 1: little bit more rewatchable in the same being as like
- 35:30Speaker 1: something like Texas Chainsaw or like Friday the Thirteenth. But
- 35:34Speaker 1: Maxine is you know, it's a pretty tall task to
- 35:38Speaker 1: to stick the landing, you know, to end a trilogy,
- 35:40Speaker 1: and I thought that film did a really nice job.
- 35:44Speaker 2: X also has a better set of like supporting characters
- 35:52Speaker 2: as well. You know, Maxine, outside of her her friend
- 35:57Speaker 2: that works at the video store, you barely get to
- 35:59Speaker 2: know like Halsey's character or the other character, you barely
- 36:03Speaker 2: get to know them. In X, you have like almost
- 36:05Speaker 2: like this ensemble with Kid Cutty, Britney Snow, Jenna Ortega.
- 36:10Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of side characters that you
- 36:12Speaker 2: get into, so I feel like there's a little bit
- 36:13Speaker 2: of a different investment with them kind of surrounding me
- 36:17Speaker 2: a goth and then of course Pearl and her husband
- 36:20Speaker 2: living in a house. Like there's a lot to kind
- 36:22Speaker 2: of get into with that movie and enjoy. And also
- 36:26Speaker 2: X is funny, Like it's a very funny movie to me,
- 36:30Speaker 2: Like it's just the humor is really good and it's
- 36:34Speaker 2: so ridiculous, you know what I mean.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Actually, it has easily one of my favorite soundtracks out
- 36:40Speaker 1: of all three of the movies, with Chelsea Wolf and
- 36:45Speaker 1: Tyler Bates on it. That's one that I come back
- 36:48Speaker 1: to every now and again to listen listen to.
- 36:51Speaker 2: On the side, there's a moment in X where my
- 36:56Speaker 2: wife pointed out to me when we saw this in theaters, which,
- 37:00Speaker 2: by the way, we saw this in theaters and not
- 37:02Speaker 2: even seeing like a trailer or anything, so we had
- 37:05Speaker 2: no idea what we were going in for But there's
- 37:07Speaker 2: a scene where Kid cut he opens the door and
- 37:11Speaker 2: he's literally dick swinging because they make comments the whole
- 37:14Speaker 2: time about how big he is, how big his packages,
- 37:18Speaker 2: and yeah, there's like a shot of him backlit, so
- 37:22Speaker 2: it's just a silhouette and Erica was.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Like, do you do you see that?
- 37:30Speaker 2: So I just had to add that for the humor
- 37:32Speaker 2: of art. I thought that was pretty funny, just saying so,
- 37:36Speaker 2: speaking of swinging, let's swing over and talk about my
- 37:40Speaker 2: second pick. Let's talk about that's about David Lynch's nineteen
- 37:49Speaker 2: eighty classic The Elephant Man. Sorry, I couldn't hold that
- 38:01Speaker 2: one together as much as much as I tried. Yes,
- 38:05Speaker 2: that was my second pick. Thank you, thank you, thank
- 38:09Speaker 2: you for my second pick. Yes, nineteen eighties The Elephant Man.
- 38:14Speaker 2: We watched this on the Criterion Blu ray release. This
- 38:20Speaker 2: was first of all, I just want to set the
- 38:22Speaker 2: vibe of why we picked to watch this. It was
- 38:26Speaker 2: like a seventy degree day here in Jersey, sunset had
- 38:30Speaker 2: just happened, it was raining, and I was just really
- 38:33Speaker 2: in the mood for something little like gothic, but I
- 38:39Speaker 2: didn't feel like going into the universal monsters and I
- 38:42Speaker 2: hadn't seen The Elephant Man in a long time, so
- 38:46Speaker 2: I had picked up the Criterion Blu ray And there's
- 38:49Speaker 2: a couple of things about this movie. I just want
- 38:52Speaker 2: to say, I think, beginning to end, this is a
- 38:53Speaker 2: perfect movie. There's nothing wrong with it. Five stars, bona
- 38:58Speaker 2: fide classic in my opinion. The look of this movie
- 39:06Speaker 2: shot in black and white, the look of this movie
- 39:08Speaker 2: is perfect. This is again it feels like it belongs
- 39:12Speaker 2: in the thirties. It just has this perfect black and
- 39:17Speaker 2: white toned to it. But also I found out from
- 39:22Speaker 2: reading the booklet Criteria included that the reason this movie
- 39:26Speaker 2: exists in the way that it does is because of
- 39:28Speaker 2: Melt Brooks. And this was the first movie under Brooks
- 39:30Speaker 2: Films where he pretty much like let David Lynch do
- 39:34Speaker 2: his thing. There wasn't a lot of interference, if any
- 39:37Speaker 2: at all. And this was his first major studio film
- 39:41Speaker 2: because he shot Eraserhead over four years, which I didn't
- 39:45Speaker 2: know either.
- 39:48Speaker 1: No, I didn't either, Yeah, over four.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Years he shot Eraserhead and obviously that was what it was.
- 39:54Speaker 2: So for imagine your studio debut being The Elephant Man.
- 40:01Speaker 2: That's crazy, crazy to have you guys seen this one.
- 40:08Speaker 3: I watched it a long time ago with my grandfather,
- 40:11Speaker 3: but I haven't watched it since something. I have to
- 40:14Speaker 3: revisit sometime soon.
- 40:17Speaker 1: It's been a minute since I've seen it, but I
- 40:19Speaker 1: know when we were talking before this episode, you brought
- 40:22Speaker 1: that movie up. I was like, man, it's been a
- 40:24Speaker 1: while since I've seen that. It's definitely one I need
- 40:26Speaker 1: to rewatch for sure.
- 40:28Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, it's incredible. Anthony Hopkins is fantastic. John Hurt
- 40:33Speaker 2: plays John Merrick, who is a titular elephant man. Incredible
- 40:38Speaker 2: performances in here. The ending is absolutely heartbreaking. Of course,
- 40:44Speaker 2: you have the iconic moment in the train station where
- 40:48Speaker 2: when he gets chased by a crowd and he yells,
- 40:51Speaker 2: I am a human being, I'm not a monster. Like
- 40:55Speaker 2: this movie beginning to end is a roller coaster ride
- 40:59Speaker 2: of you feeling good for people who don't know. This
- 41:03Speaker 2: is a story of John Merrick, who is a severely
- 41:07Speaker 2: disfigured man who was part of a like a circus,
- 41:11Speaker 2: a side show of like a freak show circus performance.
- 41:15Speaker 2: He sort of gets saved by Anthony Hopkins character, who
- 41:18Speaker 2: is a doctor Treeves. He sort of gets saved by
- 41:21Speaker 2: him and begins, he treats him like a human being,
- 41:24Speaker 2: and you find out that he's actually really intelligent in
- 41:27Speaker 2: his ability to speak and all this stuff, and he
- 41:29Speaker 2: kind of begins to build a life of his own.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And there's these ups and downs along the way, but
- 41:35Speaker 2: just an incredible performance, Incredible performances all around. This movie
- 41:39Speaker 2: is technically brilliant. David Lynch incredible direction, and at the
- 41:45Speaker 2: end of the day, it's very powerful. And I think
- 41:47Speaker 2: if anybody's looking to explore cinema and like, if you
- 41:53Speaker 2: want to approach things in that way, which is like
- 41:55Speaker 2: I'm going to learn about the history of film and
- 41:57Speaker 2: I really want to become like film scholar academic, I
- 42:00Speaker 2: think The Elephant Man is a must watch just because
- 42:04Speaker 2: of the brilliance of Lynch's approach. He never treats him
- 42:08Speaker 2: like a monster. He never wants does he treat this
- 42:13Speaker 2: character like a monster, and he is more human than
- 42:18Speaker 2: most of the other humans portrayed in a movie. From
- 42:20Speaker 2: beginning to end, you like this guy more than anybody else.
- 42:26Speaker 1: I feel like that film is like a standout in
- 42:29Speaker 1: Lynch's filmography, just because it's so like it's like a
- 42:34Speaker 1: gut punch of a movie. Yes, Whereas I feel like
- 42:38Speaker 1: his other films, while I appreciate them on so many levels,
- 42:43Speaker 1: they don't carry that same type of emotional weight. I mean,
- 42:46Speaker 1: maybe fire Walk with Me in a different way, But
- 42:49Speaker 1: The Elephant Man is definitely It's a it's pre in
- 42:53Speaker 1: depth character study.
- 42:55Speaker 2: It is, and I think you can see a lot
- 42:58Speaker 2: of the early influence of where he would go later
- 43:02Speaker 2: in his career. Like David Lynch with like Twin Peaks
- 43:06Speaker 2: and stuff, you still have like a little bit of
- 43:09Speaker 2: that wild imagery with some of the nightmares that we
- 43:11Speaker 2: see of his, especially the beginning of the movie and
- 43:13Speaker 2: the end of the movie, so you kind of see
- 43:15Speaker 2: a little bit of that. But I think this is
- 43:18Speaker 2: a really interesting kind of moment in his filmography that
- 43:24Speaker 2: I actually end up liking. Like I'm a Lynch fan,
- 43:28Speaker 2: but I feel like this is one now that he's passed,
- 43:33Speaker 2: that I will continue to come back to, you know
- 43:35Speaker 2: what I mean. So my second pick was The Elephant Man,
- 43:40Speaker 2: put out by Criterion, which does have a great booklet.
- 43:43Speaker 2: You will hear me always talk about how good booklets are.
- 43:46Speaker 2: A great write up. It is an excerpt, I think
- 43:48Speaker 2: from a book written about David cron or David Cronberg. Oh,
- 43:53Speaker 2: my god, David Lynch, my apologies. Speaking of apologies, I
- 43:58Speaker 2: think Steve you got you got one more to talk
- 44:00Speaker 2: about with us.
- 44:01Speaker 1: If anything, I'm unapologetic for my last choice, and that
- 44:06Speaker 1: is City of the Living Dead. I've been waiting this
- 44:09Speaker 1: entire episode to talk about this movie.
- 44:10Speaker 3: You know, by the way you got to put Chuck
- 44:13Speaker 3: to sleep, I was gonna say I didn't fall asleep
- 44:16Speaker 3: because I was bored. I'm just gonna put that out
- 44:18Speaker 3: there just in case anybody wants to get mad at me.
- 44:21Speaker 2: But you are apologetic about falling asleep thirty minutes in.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Well accept that apology.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Then go on, Steve, talk your heart out about this one.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Okay. So the release that I watched recently, it's uh
- 44:40Speaker 1: Cauldron was the one who released this. So this was
- 44:42Speaker 1: a long time coming but definitely worth the wait. So
- 44:47Speaker 1: for those of you guys that don't know, I'm a
- 44:49Speaker 1: big fan of Luccio Faulci and the Gates of Hell
- 44:52Speaker 1: trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy of all time. But
- 44:55Speaker 1: this film is just absolute nightmare fuel. If you guys
- 45:01Speaker 1: ever want to get me going about talking about film,
- 45:05Speaker 1: diving into Italian horror Giallo, any of that stuff. I
- 45:09Speaker 1: am big fan through and through, so it was fun
- 45:12Speaker 1: to revisit this. I haven't watched it since I initially
- 45:16Speaker 1: picked this up, but man, i'll tell you what, the
- 45:19Speaker 1: transfer looks incredible. The presentation of like the just like
- 45:23Speaker 1: the packaging as a whole cauldron, put a lot of
- 45:26Speaker 1: love into it, and I just have so much appreciation
- 45:29Speaker 1: for that, you know, especially because it's one of my
- 45:30Speaker 1: favorite movies.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Yeah, the movie's awesome. Man. I think in the Gates
- 45:37Speaker 2: of Hell trilogy, I think it has the most disturbing
- 45:44Speaker 2: sequence of any of them, which is the throwing up
- 45:46Speaker 2: of all of your insides in a car scene. Yeah,
- 45:50Speaker 2: that was gnarley, dude, It's so gross. And then like
- 45:54Speaker 2: it keeps cutting, it keeps cutting back and forth because
- 45:57Speaker 2: one thing I love about Luciofolgi is that he's never
- 46:00Speaker 2: afraid to show like the the like the dummy, Like
- 46:05Speaker 2: you can always tell it's a dummy during a practical
- 46:07Speaker 2: EF factor if it's not a dummy, And they cut
- 46:11Speaker 2: between this medium shot of her and you could just
- 46:14Speaker 2: tell that she's pushing things out of her mouth, and
- 46:17Speaker 2: then it cuts to these like close ups of a matted,
- 46:20Speaker 2: you know, mouth, and it's just like the works coming out,
- 46:23Speaker 2: and it keeps cutting between those and what is like
- 46:27Speaker 2: her liver she like cops up her whole entire liver
- 46:30Speaker 2: after puking up all of her intestines on all of
- 46:33Speaker 2: her other insides. It's it's such a great scene, man.
- 46:37Speaker 3: And then immediately crushes the back of her boyfriend's skull afterwards.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Yep, yep. Yeah, And you got so many scenes. What
- 46:44Speaker 2: is it? Is it? Uh? What's the scene with the
- 46:49Speaker 2: My god, It's been so long since I've watched any livingit.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Is it flies or is it locust? What is it
- 46:53Speaker 2: that comes into the house?
- 46:56Speaker 1: Oh, I I'm totally drawing a blank. I was about
- 46:59Speaker 1: to bring up the drills scene, which is another one.
- 47:02Speaker 1: It's just it's completely out of left field. And I
- 47:05Speaker 1: don't even know like how justified it was for why
- 47:08Speaker 1: it happened, but it definitely happened. And it lingers on
- 47:12Speaker 1: that shot for like the longest time. There's just so
- 47:16Speaker 1: many there's just so many moments in that movie that
- 47:20Speaker 1: just I remember the first time I watch it just
- 47:22Speaker 1: keeps you up at night, like it's just so creepy.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Yeah, especially that self inflating a blow up.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Duh, oh stop it. I'm trying to find the I'm
- 47:38Speaker 2: trying to find the the the bugs scene right now,
- 47:41Speaker 2: and I just can't remember what type of bugs it
- 47:45Speaker 2: is and I feel terrible not remembering that.
- 47:48Speaker 1: But well it it seemed like the perfect time to
- 47:51Speaker 1: revisit some of his movies, especially with Grindhouse getting well.
- 47:56Speaker 1: At the time of this recording, it's already been released,
- 47:59Speaker 1: but leading up to this, I was watching all his
- 48:02Speaker 1: other films before The Beyond came out, So that's another
- 48:05Speaker 1: personal favorite of mine.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that beautiful four K.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I can't wait to dive into it.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Dude. That Cauldron Film's release is so good. And for
- 48:14Speaker 2: those who don't know, Cauldron Films is Diabolic DVD, so
- 48:20Speaker 2: the owner of Diabolic Cauldron is his label, and City
- 48:24Speaker 2: Living Dead came out a couple of years ago. I
- 48:26Speaker 2: have the Gates of Hell version of it, which is
- 48:29Speaker 2: just like an alternate slip cover basically. But props to
- 48:33Speaker 2: them for really like leaning into the Italian horror sub genre,
- 48:39Speaker 2: especially in the TV works, because this past year they
- 48:41Speaker 2: put out the the House of Horrors box set, Houses
- 48:45Speaker 2: of Doom or House of Doom. I'm sorry. Yeah, the
- 48:48Speaker 2: House of Doom box set, which is incredible. You have
- 48:50Speaker 2: two films in there from Lucio Fulci and two from
- 48:54Speaker 2: I think Berto Lenzi. Right, incredible set. And then they
- 48:58Speaker 2: have I know a box set coming out just got
- 49:02Speaker 2: delayed but another couple of months Bear Yeah, and again
- 49:07Speaker 2: four movies that were made for TV.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I will go on record and say the Houses of
- 49:13Speaker 1: Doom box set was one of my favorite releases from
- 49:17Speaker 1: last year.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Damn, I'll take that.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Yeah, high praise.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Yeah, No, that's a it's a fantastic box set, man.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And then now they've released them all separately, so if
- 49:29Speaker 2: anybody's listening, all fill all four of those films are
- 49:33Speaker 2: available on Cauldron or on Diabolic DVD on its own,
- 49:37Speaker 2: all four of all four. There's only one that I'm
- 49:40Speaker 2: not a big fan of, and that's Lucy's Sweet House
- 49:44Speaker 2: of Horrors. I don't think that one is very good,
- 49:46Speaker 2: but uh, you know, uh, the House of Clocks is
- 49:51Speaker 2: my my favorite of the Yeah, I was very surprised
- 49:55Speaker 2: by that. I started this set with the House of
- 49:57Speaker 2: Clocks and I was like, oh, this is gonna be awesome,
- 49:59Speaker 2: and then Sweet House of Horrors and I was like.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Oh no, I would say varying degree of quality for
- 50:09Speaker 1: each movie, but I'm happy to have that in the collection.
- 50:12Speaker 1: And that's what makes me so excited because I saw
- 50:15Speaker 1: the level of care that went into like first and
- 50:18Speaker 1: foremost City of the Living Dead, then with that box
- 50:21Speaker 1: set for the Houses of Doom, and with the Limberto
- 50:24Speaker 1: Baba box set coming up, it's like, if you guys
- 50:28Speaker 1: need to take your time putting that together by all means,
- 50:31Speaker 1: because I would rather that be like a finished product
- 50:34Speaker 1: and actually reflect like what you guys want to put
- 50:37Speaker 1: out than something that's like undercooked and you know it
- 50:40Speaker 1: doesn't stick the landing.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Well, just so the listeners know. It wasn't delayed for
- 50:46Speaker 2: any other like any negative reasons. It was delayed because
- 50:49Speaker 2: they actually added Italian audio to all four and they're
- 50:55Speaker 2: doing a full color booklet now as well.
- 50:58Speaker 1: It's gonna be worth the way, yep, yep.
- 51:00Speaker 2: So it was pushed back a month. But it was
- 51:02Speaker 2: one of those ones where when I read why it
- 51:04Speaker 2: was delayed, I was like, Okay, I'm good, like I'm fine,
- 51:07Speaker 2: fine with that.
- 51:08Speaker 1: And the just on the side note, I know, was
- 51:12Speaker 1: it Arrow who released City of the Living Dead? And
- 51:14Speaker 1: House House by the Cemetery as well that they did
- 51:17Speaker 1: like a separate box set. Yep, yeah, those in their
- 51:22Speaker 1: own right, very nice releases. But I'm definitely happy with
- 51:27Speaker 1: the Cauldron release and Blue Underground for a House by
- 51:30Speaker 1: the Cemetery, Yeah yeah, Arrow did.
- 51:33Speaker 2: I believe they did City the Living Dead back when
- 51:35Speaker 2: they were doing like the Window Box the UK exclusives
- 51:39Speaker 2: way way back when, and then they just did the
- 51:42Speaker 2: limited edition set last year along with a House by
- 51:45Speaker 2: the Cemetery. I don't. I don't own I have a
- 51:47Speaker 2: House by the Cemetery in their four K limited edition set.
- 51:51Speaker 2: I don't have the City of Living Dead. I was
- 51:52Speaker 2: perfectly fine with my like Cauldron release. So speaking of
- 52:00Speaker 2: dead and dying though, Chuck, what's your third.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Oh my god, someone to do a wellness chalk or
- 52:09Speaker 1: wellness check on chalk.
- 52:10Speaker 2: No, no, no wellness check on all of us. It's ten
- 52:13Speaker 2: o'clock at night and we're we're fading.
- 52:17Speaker 3: I wanted to bring this full circle because the reason
- 52:21Speaker 3: I even picked up this film in the first place
- 52:23Speaker 3: was because we were initially going to do this as
- 52:25Speaker 3: a bonus episode with Steve after we did My Bloody
- 52:29Speaker 3: Valentine and that is Sergio Martinos or so.
- 52:34Speaker 2: See Dead and Dying makes sense in my you know.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Chuck, it's never too late to do that deep dive episode.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I'm still I'm still always available for that.
- 52:44Speaker 2: It will happen, just so the audience knows. But but
- 52:49Speaker 2: what did you think it's towards?
- 52:52Speaker 1: It was wild? Was it what you were expecting?
- 52:57Speaker 3: Not at all? Especially that opening. I wasn't expecting to
- 53:02Speaker 3: be greeted by, you know, just a casual threesome going
- 53:05Speaker 3: on and photos being taken in stuff you got a man.
- 53:08Speaker 2: It is beautifully shot though, Like that opening scene is
- 53:12Speaker 2: incredibly respectful, very well shot, Chuck. I imagine you were like,
- 53:20Speaker 2: what is the most mean spirited Jalla movie I could find?
- 53:23Speaker 2: And then you just went right for Torso.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Yeah, based off the recommendation from you guys, which unfortunately
- 53:32Speaker 3: this is a second copy that I have because I
- 53:34Speaker 3: didn't realize it was in one of the Gallo Essentials.
- 53:37Speaker 1: That I got.
- 53:38Speaker 3: But hey, but this four K transfer looks beautiful.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the four K makes up for it,
- 53:44Speaker 1: to be honest, Like, I don't I don't mind double
- 53:46Speaker 1: dipping just because I like that movie that much.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, there's some stuff about Torso that I really love.
- 53:54Speaker 2: One being there's like this weird fantastical element to it.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Every kill kind of feels like you're transferred into like
- 54:04Speaker 2: a little bit of a different world, Like especially in
- 54:06Speaker 2: the woods after the girl gets high yep, and you
- 54:10Speaker 2: kind of entered like it looks like the swamp from
- 54:14Speaker 2: from Never Ending Story. Yeah, Like all of a sudden,
- 54:17Speaker 2: you're like, what the hell am I watched? It's beautifully shot,
- 54:20Speaker 2: like beautifully shot. Second, everybody, every female that you see
- 54:28Speaker 2: in this movie is naked at one point or another,
- 54:31Speaker 2: which is insane, absolutely insane.
- 54:36Speaker 3: I want to be the milkman, Yes, Yeah, I'm gonna
- 54:43Speaker 3: deliver the milk and bread every morning for them.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Yeah. And Third, the final like twenty five minutes of
- 54:55Speaker 2: this movie turns into a really tense, almost like a
- 54:58Speaker 2: thriller that takes place exclusively in a house, And I
- 55:03Speaker 2: love it because the movie changes its pace so quickly
- 55:10Speaker 2: and it's so memorable. How So basically like at the
- 55:15Speaker 2: end of the movie, they get, uh, the killer gets
- 55:18Speaker 2: to the house where our main girl we've been following
- 55:20Speaker 2: and all her friends are living, and suddenly it turns
- 55:23Speaker 2: into like a survival movie. And I love it so much.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Is really layered.
- 55:32Speaker 3: It is definitely Yeah, yeah, talk about anxiety and doucing
- 55:36Speaker 3: at that point in the movie as well.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it is man and it's it's very like, I
- 55:44Speaker 2: don't know, I mean, I feel like trying to think
- 55:48Speaker 2: of what else I I feel like the only other
- 55:54Speaker 2: scene that I go back to and think about is
- 55:57Speaker 2: kind of like the scene in the apartment in Opera
- 56:03Speaker 2: m okay, where it's sort of like this tense you
- 56:07Speaker 2: don't know who's in the room, and the camera's swinging
- 56:09Speaker 2: around and moving a whole lot, And that's kind of
- 56:12Speaker 2: what's happening in Torso when she wakes up and slowly
- 56:14Speaker 2: we're revealing kind of what's happened while she was out,
- 56:19Speaker 2: and it just turns into and she's in. She's hurt.
- 56:22Speaker 2: She has a broken foot or something.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Yeah, she strained her ankle or something like that.
- 56:28Speaker 2: Yeah, she has some injuries. So now we're following the
- 56:30Speaker 2: main character who's trying to survive, who's injured. All her
- 56:34Speaker 2: friends are dead, and then there's like this brief thing
- 56:36Speaker 2: where the killer almost like skins one of them, or
- 56:39Speaker 2: like it's gonna cut off all the limbs, and it
- 56:41Speaker 2: gets really really wild in the third act, and it's
- 56:45Speaker 2: it's a lot of fun. I have a whole lot
- 56:47Speaker 2: of fun with.
- 56:47Speaker 1: It, oh yeah, and I've probably much enjoyed it. I
- 56:52Speaker 1: feel like that's like one of the early examples of
- 56:56Speaker 1: kind of bridging the gap between Giallo and like a
- 56:59Speaker 1: early slash. Sure, yeah, you know, just there's like elements
- 57:04Speaker 1: of both throughout the movie. But it's just like such
- 57:07Speaker 1: a well made movie. And Sergio Martino, like his track
- 57:11Speaker 1: record even lean up to that movie is just like
- 57:13Speaker 1: it's crazy. Yeah, it's got so many hits.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, Well, speaking of hits, and let's talk about
- 57:21Speaker 2: him one more time for my third pick, because my
- 57:25Speaker 2: third I'm going with Lucio Fulci and The Psychic, which
- 57:30Speaker 2: so good. Oh dude. I watched this on the Seven
- 57:34Speaker 2: Films four K that they put out a couple of
- 57:37Speaker 2: years ago. Of this, it was interesting because I had
- 57:42Speaker 2: seen The Psychic before, obviously, never this good. Like I
- 57:45Speaker 2: do feel like this is one of those examples of
- 57:48Speaker 2: a four K transfer elevating the movie to another level
- 57:51Speaker 2: and me learning like finding that appreciation for it because
- 57:54Speaker 2: of this transfer. And what's really cool is that this
- 57:57Speaker 2: comes at an interesting time for Folgi because ful Chinese
- 58:01Speaker 2: filmography is huge, Like he did sex, comedies, comedies, all
- 58:07Speaker 2: kinds of stuff leading up to most of his post
- 58:11Speaker 2: zombie career, where he did a lot more horror. But
- 58:16Speaker 2: Psychic comes after a lizard in a woman's skin and
- 58:20Speaker 2: don't torture a duckling. So the Psychic, I mean, And
- 58:24Speaker 2: before this he did White Fang, Challenged a White Fang,
- 58:27Speaker 2: he did Dracula into Provinces, He did all these weird
- 58:30Speaker 2: little movies, and then The Psychic comes out in nineteen
- 58:32Speaker 2: seventy seven, and to me, I don't I can't immediately
- 58:40Speaker 2: think of Fulgi movies that are as unique as The Psychic,
- 58:46Speaker 2: because this is a movie that's incredibly tamed and restrained.
- 58:54Speaker 2: You're not getting over the top vicious violence like you
- 58:58Speaker 2: are in pretty much everything from nineteen seventy nine on
- 59:03Speaker 2: from him. This is much more of a sort of
- 59:07Speaker 2: a mystery movie, more kind of how it would play
- 59:11Speaker 2: it so to kind of explain to plot to people,
- 59:15Speaker 2: It's about a woman who gets visions, and she sees
- 59:19Speaker 2: the visions, these visions and like these flashes, and they
- 59:22Speaker 2: begin to start kind of start coming to life, and
- 59:24Speaker 2: we find out that they're actually premonitions and we're trying
- 59:27Speaker 2: we have kind of like some suspects of who committed
- 59:30Speaker 2: this crime. When this body is found and she gets
- 59:33Speaker 2: interwoven into all that and she teams up with her
- 59:39Speaker 2: psychiatrist to kind of start investigating and all this stuff.
- 59:44Speaker 2: And there is no violence in this movie except the
- 59:47Speaker 2: very beginning, a brief glimpse of it, and then a
- 59:53Speaker 2: tiny bit towards the end. That's it for Lucio Fulci movie.
- 59:57Speaker 2: That's that's all of it.
- 59:58Speaker 1: It's pretty subdued here to like I know, we were
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: talking about the Games of Hell trilogy or Zombie or
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: New York Ripper. It's it's very tame and it's more
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: of like I felt like watching the movie, it feels
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: like you're piecing together like puzzle pieces to try and
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: figure out like what exactly is going on throughout the movie,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: and it's like, I think it's it's more I would
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: argue it's like almost like more cohesive narratively compared to
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: like some of his other films where it just feels like,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you know, like we're just being gory for the sake
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: of being gory, yeah, or just you know, there's kind
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: of like dream esque sequences that are going on and
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: some of its more horror films. But man, it's like
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: it's so good.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's actually like very involving. Like I had
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: a ton of fun trying to kind of piece this
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: together in my head, because as the visions begin to
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: come to life and we start putting that together, we're
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: just as lost and as confused as our character is.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: And it does a really good job at flipping everything
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: you think, everything that you suspect on its head. And
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: at the end of the movie, I was genuinely shocked
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: by where we went the direction because there's some things
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: that are brought up. One of the things they see
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: in Division is that the killer has a limp, and
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: they introduce some red herrings that have limps, and then
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: when we see the killer who it is at the
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: end and the reason they have a limp, it just
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: like completely took me. I was like, WHOA, I would
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: be a terrible detective because I never would have figured
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: this out at all. It's so smart, you know what
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I mean? It's so smart and Fulci's direction is incredibly
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: confident all of the characters. There's even like a little
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: bit of humor in it with the I forget his name,
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: the guy that helps, like the partner to the main
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: detective who's just kind of like walking around neandering the
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: whole movie. He's like, I don't know what he's doing,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: but he's just kind of next to a detective the
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: whole entire time and never helps at all. He's like
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: at one point he like bumps into a doorway when
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: he's leaving, and like, I don't know, it's just like
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: and sometimes when the character comes around, you get a
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: little bit of that like kookie music. But it's fun,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: you know. And I genuinely like at the end of it,
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: I was like, I'm gonna keep coming back to this
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: movie over and over again.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: What did you think of the transfer? I mean, did
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: you feel like that elevated it? Because I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I felt like Severn did a phenomenal job with now
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: it just like the presentation. I mean, the box says
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: a whole very very nice yet but I don't know,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I thought I was really impressed with with how it
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: turned out.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: No, it looks beautiful, man, Like I said, I think
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: that genuinely this transfer helped me. This watch helped me
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: really kind of figure out where it fits for me
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: in the whole Folchy puzzle. And it really helped me
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: because last time I saw it, I think I saw
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: it on like it might have been like a two
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: b rip.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: It looked I've seen it on there and it's it's
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: something to behold.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, it's it's bad. It's not awful, so.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: To and God bless to be like like two be
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: is the gift that keeps on giving. But you gotta
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: be careful. There's sometimes those transfers are are a little rough,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: but beggars can't be choosers, right.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, that's right. And the four K looks incredible.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: There's a scene in a art it's like a not
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: a museum, it's like an art house that's mostly in
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: the dark, and it looks fantastic. I do want to
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: say for those who get the limited edition, there's a
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: booklet in here that is a massive write up from
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Stephen Thrower, who is an author and he wrote a
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: fantastic book about kind of the history of exploitation in
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: America called Nightmare USA. He also wrote Beyond Terror the
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Films of Lucio Folchies, So he's a bit of a
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: fulgy expert, which is crazy to me because I don't.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I feel like my my fulcy knowledge is like one
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: percent of everything he's ever done.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: So that's why I strive to become a Luccio faulty expert.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: That's it, bro, That's all I know is fully goals. Yeah,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: I don't know anything else.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: All I know is full You're well known the way Steve,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: one movie at a time.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I'll be near to these labels to start
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: pumping out you know, his his old comedy stuff and
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: you'll be you'll be good man.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: There's so many films. Obviously, his more notable stuff has
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: gotten a four K transfer, but I would love to
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: see some of his like lesser known stuff get some
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: love and and I feel like the Houses of doom
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Box that was like, it's a cool way to be
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: able to highlight some of these lesser known films he's directed.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: So Murder Rock's coming up. I'm hopeful that that will
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: be another one that more people appreciate it.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Murder Rock. And then also like Cauldron put out Contraband,
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: which is one of his action movies. They did that
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: which Contraband is really good. That was put out like
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Cauldron Films around the same time that they did City
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Living Dead. So you know, there's a lot of fun
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: stuff out there. And I think what's really hard about
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Italian filmmakers is that a lot of them shot under
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: various names, and like, sometimes sometimes I'll watch a movie,
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: especially when you get into guys like Joe Tomatto who
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: shot dude, He's like, those.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Are like, those are deep cut Italian horror directors. It's
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: not that's not like surface level. Hey, I'm just I'm
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: just getting into it, yeah.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Joe Tomato or like just like I love Jess Franco.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Just Franco is technically a Spanish filmmaker, but it kind
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: of falls under both. But like, they shot under so
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: many different names depending on what they were working on.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: There's times where I'm like watching a movie and I'll
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: finish up a movie and then I'll do a little
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: bit of research. I'm like, oh, that was Joe Dematto
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: or that oh that was Jess Franco, you know, because
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: they for whatever reason.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: And it's crazy though, because I'm sure, like as you've seen,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: there's a lot of crossover with the actors and actresses
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: that did either Giallo movies or Italian horror and I'm like, oh,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: I recognize you know so and so from you know this,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: this Italian horror flick. It's it's crazy like that community
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: of actors and actresses seems like it's very like it's
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: a it's a small group.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely, Yeah. So those are all of
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: our picks. So we talked about nine movies for our
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: first episode of After Hours. I thought this was a
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: ton of fun. Man, I'm looking forward to keep doing these.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Can I just say it's hard to narrow it down
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: to three? Yeah?
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Man, it's it's hard.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: You guys have everybody how we initially were going for
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: a ten pis each.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Five bought in, five watched.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: I'm actually looking at the previous recording and it was
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: two hours twenty five minutes long.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so you.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Can see how that went.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Did you guys have a favorite out of the films
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: you watched?
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: I actually think I think I did the Psychic last
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: because that was what I walked out of the month
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: most happy to ever rediscovered, you know. Okay, so for
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: me that's probably what I'm with.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and for my pick, so it was definitely Torso
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: I love that. Maybe I'm gonna be rewatching it again
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: very soon.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Hell yeah, what about you, Steve. I would have to
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: go with Cruising, just because I've seen obviously, I've seen
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: City of the Living Dead elsewe Alice was awesome, but
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: I felt like Cruising. I just I don't know why.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I was like super invested in watching it this time around,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: because I felt like the last time I watched it,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: this was like such an elevated way to view it.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: And I started reading a little bit more into it afterwards,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: and I'm like, it's kind of crazy al Pacino. He's
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: coming off of Godfather at that point. I mean, this
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: film could have gone kind of like just because of
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the subject matter, could have gone so wrong, and really
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: I feel like potentially could have put his career in
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: jeopardy as well as like William Freekin. I mean, he's
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: tackling such a like a heavy subject matter. And again,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: I know that there was a lot of pushback with it,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: but it's just crazy to see, like, I don't know it,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: it's crazy to just see that this movie came to fruition.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know that that movie was under a
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: lot of scrutiny, yes, and watching it watching it now,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: I can imagine is a totally different experience considering the
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: world that we live in now and how much more
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: accepting it is. And at the time, like I said,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: I haven't seen the movie in full, but at the time,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: you know, the gay community was not happy about it,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: like they were not trying to be outed like that.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: No, and considering the subject matter that, like you have
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: a killer that's targeting, you know, those in that community,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: and you know al Pacino is like going under cover
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: within that community, and he starts at a certain point
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: starts questioning things just within his own life, which is
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: kind of crazy. It's like, you know, it's quite the
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: role to take on, especially like if anyone's going to
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: take it on al Pacino, I feel because of that caliber.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: But overall, man, like I said, Aro has been doing
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: a phenomenal job with these transfers, So keep them coming.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yeah, So looking forward at the show we
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: have in a couple of weeks here, we're going to
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: be recording our episode for pet Cemetery too from Mary Lambert,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: which I'm so excited for. I was just telling Chuck,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: I think I just had like my second, my second,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: my third watch to prepare for this love that movie.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: If you're listening to this and you want to keep up.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Pet Cemetery two was put out by Screen Factory on
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: Blu Ray. Looks great, it's a cheap pickup. Make sure
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: you also stay tuned because we're actually gonna be giving
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: away a copy. You'll find out soon in that episode
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: how to get that. But coming up with that, we're
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: gonna have the average reviews on as a guest, which
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: I'm very very excited for. And then we're actually heading
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: into June. So pet Cemetery two is the May episode
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: June with our season finale, which is crazy to think
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: already to a point, we're ending season one and we're
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: gonna have my buddy Mark on Tales from the Shelf
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: he's known for, and we're gonna be covering the burning,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: which in my opinion is the quintessential campground slasher.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I would agree, Yeah, yeah, So.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: We're gonna be breaking that down. And then we kind
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: of have some ideas that we're still working out for summer.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: I know we had talked about on Instagram Arts Christmas.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: In July, I'm sort of thinking of maybe kind of
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: rearranging how we do that, because alone, I think we
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: can talk about Terrifier two for about four hours.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that'll be like a two episode.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so we might be doing some dividing. But
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: in July we'll definitely be coming back, obviously to do
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: an after hours episode, but to be kind of doing
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: our wrap up episode for season one, kind of looking
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: back at the season and what we've done and all
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: the changes. I mean, this is a show that every
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: episode has, in my opinion, gotten better and better. Like
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: we're we're slowly finding that groove and we're trying to
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: improve over and over and over again. And that's you know,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: what the goal is here. The goal is not to
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: come off the bat perfect, but to gain momentum and
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: gain traction. Especially with learning how to do this. This
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: is a whole new thing, I think for all of us.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: So absolutely learning, Yeah, learning how to podcast is tough.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: But I'm super proud of the few times that I
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: do check our statistics. I'm very proud of them. I'm
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: always shocked when more than one person listens, let alone
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: twenty or thirty or forty. You know, that's pretty mind
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: blowing to me. So but that's, you know, thanks everybody listening.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Thanks to you guys. You know, it's incredible. I really
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: don't know how to, like how to talk about this
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: without kind of getting speechless because it's crazy to me. So,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: but yeah, that's coming up, Steve. Where can people find
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: you on social media?
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: You guys can find me. My handle for basically everything
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: is after Hours video. I'm on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, you name.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: It, and Shock what about you?
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Man?
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, So for me, I mainly just use Instagram and
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: you can follow me on there at Chuck Underscore Savage,
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: where I occasionally post Paul's Yeah, people need.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: To go follow you and then demand more content there
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: already is. There's been demand. Man. You just need to
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: you just need to get get get posted. Man, I
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: think I've sent you. I think I've sent you a couple.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: I've sent a couple, a couple of followers.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: You have more than a couple.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: Uh And then of course you can you guys can
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: find me on Instagram under Bearded film Guy. Also on YouTube.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: I haven't posted in like six months on there.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: But Chris, we're waiting for the second coming.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Being being edited. Man, it's pretty cool. I'm pretty I'm
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: pretty proud that is coming back. But I just don't
